MEX-files (MEX stands for Matlab EXecutable) are dynamically linked subroutines produced from C, C++ or Fortran source code that, when compiled, can be run from within MATLAB® in the same way as MATLAB functions or built-in functions.

Could not install packages due to an EnvironmentError: [WinError 5] Access is denied:

I needed to install from a requirements file and was getting this error, but did not want to use the --user option because I didn't want to install it the location described by @not2qubit. So I ran CMD as administrator and then enabled sharing of the following directory (right click > properties > Sharing > Share...):

C:\Users\<my user name>\AppData\Local\Temp

After doing this, I was able to install from my requirements file into the application directory (where I wanted it) instead of the crazy ..\AppData dir without the error.

How to handle "Uncaught (in promise) DOMException: play() failed because the user didn't interact with the document first." on Desktop with Chrome 66?

You should have added muted attribute inside your videoElement for your code work as expected. Look bellow ..

<video id="IPcamerastream" muted="muted" autoplay src="videoplayback%20(1).mp4" width="960" height="540"></video>

Don' t forget to add a valid video link as source

How to print a Groovy variable in Jenkins?

You shouldn't use ${varName} when you're outside of strings, you should just use varName. Inside strings you use it like this; echo "this is a string ${someVariable}";. Infact you can place an general java expression inside of ${...}; echo "this is a string ${func(arg1, arg2)}.

Hibernate Error executing DDL via JDBC Statement

I have got this error when trying to create JPA entity with the name "User" (in Postgres) that is reserved. So the way it is resolved is to change the table name by @Table annotation:

@Entity
@Table(name="users")
public class User {..}

Or change the table name manually.

Java 8 optional: ifPresent return object orElseThrow exception

Two options here:

Replace ifPresent with map and use Function instead of Consumer

private String getStringIfObjectIsPresent(Optional<Object> object) {
    return object
            .map(obj -> {
                String result = "result";
                //some logic with result and return it
                return result;
            })
            .orElseThrow(MyCustomException::new);
}

Use isPresent:

private String getStringIfObjectIsPresent(Optional<Object> object) {
    if (object.isPresent()) {
        String result = "result";
        //some logic with result and return it
        return result;
    } else {
        throw new MyCustomException();
    }
}

How to handle Uncaught (in promise) DOMException: The play() request was interrupted by a call to pause()

I don't know if this is still actual for you, but I still leave my comment so maybe it will help somebody else. I had same issue, and the solution proposed by @dighan on bountysource.com/issues/ solved it for me.

So here is the code that solved my problem:

var media = document.getElementById("YourVideo");
const playPromise = media.play();
if (playPromise !== null){
    playPromise.catch(() => { media.play(); })
}

It still throws an error into console, but at least the video is playing :)

java.io.FileNotFoundException: /storage/emulated/0/New file.txt: open failed: EACCES (Permission denied)

For SDK 29 :

String str1 = "";
folder1 = new File(String.valueOf(Environment.getExternalStoragePublicDirectory(Environment.DIRECTORY_MOVIES)));
if (folder1.exists()) {str1 = folder1.toString() + File.separator;}

public static void createTextFile(String sBody, String FileName, String Where) {
    try {
        File gpxfile = new File(Where, FileName);
        FileWriter writer = new FileWriter(gpxfile);
        writer.append(sBody);
        writer.flush();
        writer.close();
    } catch (IOException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }
}

Then you can save your file like this :

createTextFile("This is Content","file.txt",str1);

org.gradle.api.tasks.TaskExecutionException: Execution failed for task ':app:transformClassesWithDexForDebug'

For me the only thing that works is to add to repositories

maven {
        url "https://maven.google.com"
    }

It should look like this:

allprojects {
    repositories {
        jcenter()
        maven {
            url "https://maven.google.com"
        }
    }

Error:Execution failed for task ':app:transformClassesWithDexForDebug' in android studio

A temporary solution is to place the code below in the module build.gradle :

android {
    aaptOptions.cruncherEnabled = false
    aaptOptions.useNewCruncher = false
}

And Sync the Project.

The number of method references in a .dex file cannot exceed 64k API 17

In android/app/build.gradle

android {

compileSdkVersion 23

 buildToolsVersion '23.0.0'

    defaultConfig {
        applicationId "com.dkm.example"
        minSdkVersion 15
        targetSdkVersion 23
        versionCode 1
        versionName "1.0"
        multiDexEnabled true
    }

Put this inside your defaultConfig:

multiDexEnabled true

it works for me

Android- Error:Execution failed for task ':app:transformClassesWithDexForRelease'

Just Change the google play services in gradle (module app) from 9.x.x to the lower version 8.4.0 is work for me

android : Error converting byte to dex

If you have multiple projects, make sure you are not adding a dependency multiple times, I needed to exclude the other project's dependency like this:

compile(project(':OtherProject-SDK')) {
    compile.exclude module: 'play-services-gcm'
    compile.exclude module: 'play-services-location'
    compile.exclude module: 'support-v4'
    compile.exclude module: 'okhttp'
}

Error:Execution failed for task ':app:transformClassesWithDexForDebug'

The solution that worked for me personally was:

in the build.gradle

defaultConfig {
        multiDexEnabled true
    }

 dexOptions {
        javaMaxHeapSize "4g"
    }

Error:Execution failed for task ':app:transformClassesWithJarMergingForDebug'

All the above not working for me.. Because I am using Facebook Ad dependency..

Incase If anybody using this dependency compile 'com.facebook.android:audience-network-sdk:4.16.0'

Try this code instead of above

compile ('com.facebook.android:audience-network-sdk:4.16.0'){
exclude group: 'com.google.android.gms'
}

com.android.build.transform.api.TransformException

I had same problem when i rolled back to old version via git, and that version had previous .jar library of one 3rd party api, and for some reason turned out that both jar of the same sdk, just different versions were in /libs folder.

How to enable TLS 1.2 support in an Android application (running on Android 4.1 JB)

As the OP said, TLS v1.1 and v1.2 protocols are supported in API level 16+, but are not enabled by default, we just need to enable it.

Example here uses HttpsUrlConnection, not HttpUrlConnection. Follow https://blog.dev-area.net/2015/08/13/android-4-1-enable-tls-1-1-and-tls-1-2/, we can create a factory

class MyFactory extends SSLSocketFactory {

    private javax.net.ssl.SSLSocketFactory internalSSLSocketFactory;

    public MyFactory() throws KeyManagementException, NoSuchAlgorithmException {
        SSLContext context = SSLContext.getInstance("TLS");
        context.init(null, null, null);
        internalSSLSocketFactory = context.getSocketFactory();
    }

    @Override
    public String[] getDefaultCipherSuites() {
        return internalSSLSocketFactory.getDefaultCipherSuites();
    }

    @Override
    public String[] getSupportedCipherSuites() {
        return internalSSLSocketFactory.getSupportedCipherSuites();
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket() throws IOException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket());
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket(Socket s, String host, int port, boolean autoClose) throws IOException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket(s, host, port, autoClose));
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket(String host, int port) throws IOException, UnknownHostException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket(host, port));
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket(String host, int port, InetAddress localHost, int localPort) throws IOException, UnknownHostException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket(host, port, localHost, localPort));
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket(InetAddress host, int port) throws IOException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket(host, port));
    }

    @Override
    public Socket createSocket(InetAddress address, int port, InetAddress localAddress, int localPort) throws IOException {
        return enableTLSOnSocket(internalSSLSocketFactory.createSocket(address, port, localAddress, localPort));
    }

    private Socket enableTLSOnSocket(Socket socket) {
        if(socket != null && (socket instanceof SSLSocket)) {
            ((SSLSocket)socket).setEnabledProtocols(new String[] {"TLSv1.1", "TLSv1.2"});
        }
        return socket;
    }
}

No matter which Networking library you use, make sure ((SSLSocket)socket).setEnabledProtocols(new String[] {"TLSv1.1", "TLSv1.2"}); gets called so the Socket has enabled TLS protocols.

Now, you can use that in HttpsUrlConnection

class MyHttpRequestTask extends AsyncTask<String,Integer,String> {

    @Override
    protected String doInBackground(String... params) {
        String my_url = params[0];
        try {
            URL url = new URL(my_url);
            HttpsURLConnection httpURLConnection = (HttpsURLConnection) url.openConnection();
            httpURLConnection.setSSLSocketFactory(new MyFactory());
            // setting the Request Method Type
            httpURLConnection.setRequestMethod("GET");
            // adding the headers for request
            httpURLConnection.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "application/json");

            String result = readStream(httpURLConnection.getInputStream());
            Log.e("My Networking", "We have data" + result.toString());

        }catch (Exception e){
            e.printStackTrace();
            Log.e("My Networking", "Oh no, error occurred " + e.toString());
        }

        return null;
    }

    private static String readStream(InputStream is) throws IOException {
        final BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(is, Charset.forName("US-ASCII")));
        StringBuilder total = new StringBuilder();
        String line;
        while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
            total.append(line);
        }
        if (reader != null) {
            reader.close();
        }
        return total.toString();
    }
}

For example

new MyHttpRequestTask().execute(myUrl);

Also, remember to bump minSdkVersion in build.gradle to 16

minSdkVersion 16

Getting "java.nio.file.AccessDeniedException" when trying to write to a folder

Getting java.nio.file.AccessDeniedException when trying to write to a folder

Unobviously, Comodo antivirus has an "Auto-Containment" setting that can cause this exact error as well. (e.g. the user can write to a location, but the java.exe and javaw.exe processes cannot).

In this edge-case scenario, adding an exception for the process and/or folder should help.

Temporarily disabling the antivirus feature will help understand if Comodo AV is the culprit.

I post this not because I use or prefer Comodo, but because it's a tremendously unobvious symptom to an otherwise functioning Java application and can cost many hours of troubleshooting file permissions that are sane and correct, but being blocked by a 3rd-party application.

How to resolve Value cannot be null. Parameter name: source in linq?

When you call a Linq statement like this:

// x = new List<string>();
var count = x.Count(s => s.StartsWith("x"));

You are actually using an extension method in the System.Linq namespace, so what the compiler translates this into is:

var count = Enumerable.Count(x, s => s.StartsWith("x"));

So the error you are getting above is because the first parameter, source (which would be x in the sample above) is null.

TypeError: 'list' object cannot be interpreted as an integer

range takes in an integer. you want for each element in the list.

Could not commit JPA transaction: Transaction marked as rollbackOnly

For those who can't (or don't want to) setup a debugger to track down the original exception which was causing the rollback-flag to get set, you can just add a bunch of debug statements throughout your code to find the lines of code which trigger the rollback-only flag:

logger.debug("Is rollbackOnly: " + TransactionAspectSupport.currentTransactionStatus().isRollbackOnly());

Adding this throughout the code allowed me to narrow down the root cause, by numbering the debug statements and looking to see where the above method goes from returning "false" to "true".

Saving binary data as file using JavaScript from a browser

To do this task download.js library can be used. Here is an example from library docs:

Export HTML page to PDF on user click using JavaScript

This is because you define your "doc" variable outside of your click event. The first time you click the button the doc variable contains a new jsPDF object. But when you click for a second time, this variable can't be used in the same way anymore. As it is already defined and used the previous time.

change it to:

$(function () {

    var specialElementHandlers = {
        '#editor': function (element,renderer) {
            return true;
        }
    };
 $('#cmd').click(function () {
        var doc = new jsPDF();
        doc.fromHTML(
            $('#target').html(), 15, 15,
            { 'width': 170, 'elementHandlers': specialElementHandlers },
            function(){ doc.save('sample-file.pdf'); }
        );

    });
});

and it will work.

Performing SQL queries on an Excel Table within a Workbook with VBA Macro

One thing you may be able to do is get the address of the dynamic named range, and use that as the input in your SQL string. Something like:

Sheets("shtName").range("namedRangeName").Address

Which will spit out an address string, something like $A$1:$A$8

Edit:

As I said in my comment below, you can dynamically get the full address (including sheet name) and either use it directly or parse the sheet name for later use:

ActiveWorkbook.Names.Item("namedRangeName").RefersToLocal

Which results in a string like =Sheet1!$C$1:$C$4. So for your code example above, your SQL statement could be

strRangeAddress = Mid(ActiveWorkbook.Names.Item("namedRangeName").RefersToLocal,2)

strSQL = "SELECT * FROM [strRangeAddress]"

Transaction marked as rollback only: How do I find the cause

Found a good explanation with solutions: https://vcfvct.wordpress.com/2016/12/15/spring-nested-transactional-rollback-only/

1) remove the @Transacional from the nested method if it does not really require transaction control. So even it has exception, it just bubbles up and does not affect transactional stuff.

OR:

2) if nested method does need transaction control, make it as REQUIRE_NEW for the propagation policy that way even if throws exception and marked as rollback only, the caller will not be affected.

The above example changes the password from password to changeit. This command will succeed if the private key password was password.

How to use sys.exit() in Python

Using 2.7:

from functools import partial
from random import randint

for roll in iter(partial(randint, 1, 8), 1):
    print 'you rolled: {}'.format(roll)
print 'oops you rolled a 1!'

you rolled: 7
you rolled: 7
you rolled: 8
you rolled: 6
you rolled: 8
you rolled: 5
oops you rolled a 1!

Then change the "oops" print to a raise SystemExit

The specified type member 'Date' is not supported in LINQ to Entities. Only initializers, entity members, and entity navigation properties

Another solution could be:

   .Where(x => x.DateTimeStart.Date == currentDate.Date).AsQueryable();

Python if-else short-hand

The most readable way is

x = 10 if a > b else 11

but you can use and and or, too:

x = a > b and 10 or 11

The "Zen of Python" says that "readability counts", though, so go for the first way.

Also, the and-or trick will fail if you put a variable instead of 10 and it evaluates to False.

However, if more than the assignment depends on this condition, it will be more readable to write it as you have:

if A[i] > B[j]:
  x = A[i]
  i += 1
else:
  x = A[j]
  j += 1

unless you put i and j in a container. But if you show us why you need it, it may well turn out that you don't.

In Symfony 4.2+ you have to use the package:

composer require symfony/proxy-manager-bridge

The parameter for the JSON.parse may be returning nothing (i.e. the value given for the JSON.parse is undefined)!

It happened to me while I was parsing the Compiled solidity code from an xyz.sol file.

import web3 from './web3';
import xyz from './build/xyz.json';

const i = new web3.eth.Contract(
  JSON.parse(xyz.interface),
  '0x99Fd6eFd4257645a34093E657f69150FEFf7CdF5'

export default i;

which was misspelled as

JSON.parse(xyz.intereface)

which was returning nothing!

The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

You may get your answer here: Get-WmiObject : The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)

UPDATE

It might be due to various issues.I cant say which one is there in your case. It may be because:

  • DCOM is not enabled in host pc or target pc or on both
  • your firewall or even your antivirus is preventing the access
  • any WMI related service is disabled

Some WMI related services are:

  • Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
  • Remote Access Connection Manager
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator
  • Remote Registry

For DCOM settings refer to registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\OLE, value EnableDCOM. The value should be set to 'Y'.

is there any PHP function for open page in new tab

You can use both PHP and javascript. Perform your php codes in the backend and redirect to a php page. On the php page you redirected to add the code below:

<?php if(condition_to_check_for){ ?>

    <script type="text/javascript">
       window.open('url_goes_here', '_blank');
    </script>

<?  } ?>

Compiler error: "class, interface, or enum expected"

Look at your function s definition. If you forget using "()" after function declaration somewhere, you ll get plenty of errors with the same format:

 ... ??: class, interface, or enum expected ...

And also you have forgot closing bracket after your class or function definition ends. But note that these missing bracket, is not the only reason for this type of error.

Exception from HRESULT: 0x800A03EC Error

This is a common but poorly documented Excel COM Error. I've seen it documented as "NAME_NOT_FOUND", meaning that Excel's COM layer is disabled, and can't find the COM property or method name.

I get this error consistently when running the COM code while Excel is 'busy', for example if you set a timer that will start the code, and the code starts running while the user is editing a cell or pressing down their mouse button, then you'll always get this error. This error only happens when the code runs on the main Excel thread, but seems to be the equivalent of error VBA_E_IGNORE = 0x800AC472, which you get when calling the Excel COM object model from another thread, while Excel is 'busy'.

The only workaround seems to be to retry (with some small delay) the COM call until it succeeds - when Excel is no longer 'busy'.

Hibernate error: ids for this class must be manually assigned before calling save():

Your @Entity class has a String type for its @Id field, so it can't generate ids for you.

If you change it to an auto increment in the DB and a Long in java, and add the @GeneratedValue annotation:

@Id
@Column(name="U_id")
@GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.IDENTITY)
private Long U_id;

it will handle incrementing id generation for you.

How do I convert a org.w3c.dom.Document object to a String?

If you are ok to do transformation, you may try this.

DocumentBuilderFactory domFact = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder = domFact.newDocumentBuilder();
Document doc = builder.parse(st);
DOMSource domSource = new DOMSource(doc);
StringWriter writer = new StringWriter();
StreamResult result = new StreamResult(writer);
TransformerFactory tf = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer transformer = tf.newTransformer();
transformer.transform(domSource, result);
System.out.println("XML IN String format is: \n" + writer.toString());

Java: using switch statement with enum under subclass

Change it to this:

switch (enumExample) {
    case VALUE_A: {
        //..
        break;
    }
}

The clue is in the error. You don't need to qualify case labels with the enum type, just its value.

Java NoSuchAlgorithmException - SunJSSE, sun.security.ssl.SSLContextImpl$DefaultSSLContext

I've had a similar issue with this error. In my case, I was entering the incorrect password for the Keystore.

I changed the password for the Keystore to match what I was entering (I didn't want to change the password I was entering), but it still gave the same error.

keytool -storepasswd -keystore keystore.jks

Problem was that I also needed to change the Key's password within the Keystore.

When I initially created the Keystore, the Key was created with the same password as the Keystore (I accepted this default option). So I had to also change the Key's password as follows:

keytool -keypasswd -alias my.alias -keystore keystore.jks

How to capture a JFrame's close button click event?

Try this:

Unexpected end of file error

I also got this error, but for a .h file. The fix was to go into the file Properties (via Solution Explorer's file popup menu) and set the file type correctly. It was set to C/C++ Compiler instead of the correct C/C++ header.

Row was updated or deleted by another transaction (or unsaved-value mapping was incorrect)

I had the same problem in my grails project. The Bug was, that i overwrite the getter method of a collection field. This returned always a new version of the collection in other thread.

class Entity {
    List collection

    List getCollection() {
        return collection.unique()
    }
}

The solution was to rename the getter method:

class Entity {
    List collection

    List getUniqueCollection() {
        return collection.unique()
    }
}

SSL handshake alert: unrecognized_name error since upgrade to Java 1.7.0

We also ran into this error on a new Apache server build.

The fix in our case was to define a ServerAlias in the httpd.conf that corresponded to the host name that Java was trying to connect to. Our ServerName was set to the internal host name. Our SSL cert was using the external host name, but that was not sufficient to avoid the warning.

To help debug, you can use this ssl command:

openssl s_client -servername <hostname> -connect <hostname>:443 -state

If there is a problem with that hostname, then it will print this message near the top of the output:

SSL3 alert read: warning:unrecognized name

I should also note that we did not get that error when using that command to connect to the internal host name, even though it did not match the SSL cert.

Java POI : How to read Excel cell value and not the formula computing it?

Previously posted solutions did not work for me. cell.getRawValue() returned the same formula as stated in the cell. The following function worked for me:

public void readFormula() throws IOException {
    FileInputStream fis = new FileInputStream("Path of your file");
    Workbook wb = new XSSFWorkbook(fis);
    Sheet sheet = wb.getSheetAt(0);
    FormulaEvaluator evaluator = wb.getCreationHelper().createFormulaEvaluator();

    CellReference cellReference = new CellReference("C2"); // pass the cell which contains the formula
    Row row = sheet.getRow(cellReference.getRow());
    Cell cell = row.getCell(cellReference.getCol());

    CellValue cellValue = evaluator.evaluate(cell);

    switch (cellValue.getCellType()) {
        case Cell.CELL_TYPE_BOOLEAN:
            System.out.println(cellValue.getBooleanValue());
            break;

How to repair COMException error 80040154?

WORKAROUND:

The possible workaround is modify your project's platform from 'Any CPU' to 'X86' (in Project's Properties, Build/Platform's Target)

ROOTCAUSE

The VSS Interop is a managed assembly using 32-bit Framework and the dll contains a 32-bit COM object. If you run this COM dll in 64 bit environment, you will get the error message.

Java and SSL - java.security.NoSuchAlgorithmException

Try javax.net.ssl.keyStorePassword instead of javax.net.ssl.keyPassword: the latter isn't mentioned in the JSSE ref guide.

The algorithms you mention should be there by default using the default security providers. NoSuchAlgorithmExceptions are often cause by other underlying exceptions (file not found, wrong password, wrong keystore type, ...). It's useful to look at the full stack trace.

You could also use -Djavax.net.debug=ssl, or at least -Djavax.net.debug=ssl,keymanager, to get more debugging information, if the information in the stack trace isn't sufficient.

InvalidKeyException : Illegal Key Size - Java code throwing exception for encryption class - how to fix?

So the problem must be with your JCE Unlimited Strength installation.

Be sure you overwrite the local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar in both your JDK's jdk1.6.0_25\jre\lib\security\ and in your JRE's lib\security\ folder.

In my case I would place the new .jars in:

C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_25\jre\lib\security

and

C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\lib\security

If you are running Java 8 and you encounter this issue. Below steps should help!

Go to your JRE installation (e.g - jre1.8.0_181\lib\security\policy\unlimited) copy local_policy.jar and replace it with 'local_policy.jar' in your JDK installation directory (e.g - jdk1.8.0_141\jre\lib\security).

Hexadecimal to Integer in Java

SHA-1 produces a 160-bit message (20 bytes), too large to be stored in an int or long value. As Ralph suggests, you could use BigInteger.

To get a (less-secure) int hash, you could return the hash code of the returned byte array.

Alternatively, if you don't really need SHA at all, you could just use the UUID's String hash code.

This could be due to the service endpoint binding not using the HTTP protocol

Solution with DataContract, Flags for Enums looks a bit ugly. In my case problem been solved by adding something like "NotSet = 0" into enum:

public enum Fruits
{
  UNKNOWN = 0,
  APPLE = 1,
  BALL = 2,
  ORANGE = 3
}

Accessing elements of Python dictionary by index

As a bonus, I'd like to offer kind of a different solution to your issue. You seem to be dealing with nested dictionaries, which is usually tedious, especially when you have to check for existence of an inner key.

There are some interesting libraries regarding this on pypi, here is a quick search for you.

In your specific case, dict_digger seems suited.

>>> import dict_digger
>>> d = {
  'Apple': {'American':'16', 'Mexican':10, 'Chinese':5},
  'Grapes':{'Arabian':'25','Indian':'20'}
}

>>> print(dict_digger.dig(d, 'Apple','American'))
16
>>> print(dict_digger.dig(d, 'Grapes','American'))
None

How to select an option from drop down using Selenium WebDriver C#?

Adding a point to this- I came across a problem that OpenQA.Selenium.Support.UI namespace was not available after installing Selenium.NET binding into the C# project. Later found out that we can easily install latest version of Selenium WebDriver Support Classes by running the command:

Install-Package Selenium.Support

in NuGet Package Manager Console, or install Selenium.Support from NuGet Manager.

WCF Service Client: The content type text/html; charset=utf-8 of the response message does not match the content type of the binding

An HTML response from the web server normally indicates that an error page has been served instead of the response from the WCF service. My first suggestion would be to check that the user you're running the WCF client under has access to the resource.

what does this mean ? image/png;base64?

They serve the actual image inside CSS so there will be less HTTP requests per page.

Java String to SHA1

This is a simple solution that can be used when converting a string to a hex format:

private static String encryptPassword(String password) throws NoSuchAlgorithmException, UnsupportedEncodingException {

    MessageDigest crypt = MessageDigest.getInstance("SHA-1");
    crypt.reset();
    crypt.update(password.getBytes("UTF-8"));

    return new BigInteger(1, crypt.digest()).toString(16);
}

Reading Datetime value From Excel sheet

You need to convert the date format from OLE Automation to the .net format by using DateTime.FromOADate.

double d = double.Parse(b);
DateTime conv = DateTime.FromOADate(d);

System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800A03EC)

Try this as it worked for me...

  1. Go to "Start" -> "Run" and enter "dcomcnfg"
  2. This will bring up the component services window, expand out "Console Root" -> "Computers" -> "DCOM Config"
  3. Find "Microsoft Excel Application" in the list of components.
  4. Right click on the entry and select "Properties"
  5. Go to the "Identity" tab on the properties dialog.
  6. Select "The interactive user."

How to print full stack trace in exception?

Recommend to use LINQPad related nuget package, then you can use exceptionInstance.Dump().

enter image description here

For .NET core:

  • Install LINQPad.Runtime

For .NET framework 4 etc.

  • Install LINQPad

Sample code:

using System;
using LINQPad;

namespace csharp_Dump_test
{
    public class Program
    {
        public static void Main()
        {
            try
            {
                dosome();
            }
            catch (Exception ex)
            {
                ex.Dump();
            }
        }

        private static void dosome()
        {
            throw new Exception("Unable.");
        }
    }
}

Running result: enter image description here

org.hibernate.StaleStateException: Batch update returned unexpected row count from update [0]; actual row count: 0; expected: 1

what i have experienced is that this exception raise when updating object have an id which not exist in table. if you read exception message it says "Batch update returned unexpected row count from update [0]; actual row count: 0; expected: 1" which means it was unable to found record with your given id.

To avoid this i always read record with same id if i found record back then i call update otherwise throw "exception record not found".

Send email using java

The short answer - No.

The long answer - no, since the code relies on the presence of a SMTP server running on the local machine, and listening on port 25. The SMTP server (technically the MTA or Mail Transfer Agent) is responsible for communicating with the Mail User Agent (MUA, which in this case is the Java process) to receive outgoing emails.

Now, MTAs are typically responsible for receiving mails from users for a particular domain. So, for the domain gmail.com, it would be the Google mail servers that are responsible for authenticating mail user agents and hence transferring of mails to inboxes on the GMail servers. I'm not sure if GMail trusts open mail relay servers, but it is certainly not an easy task to perform authentication on behalf on Google, and then relay mail to the GMail servers.

If you read the JavaMail FAQ on using JavaMail to accessing GMail, you'll notice that the hostname and the port happen to be pointing to the GMail servers, and certainly not to localhost. If you intend to use your local machine, you'll need to perform either relaying or forwarding.

You'll probably need to understand the SMTP protocol in depth if you intend to get anywhere when it comes to SMTP. You can start with the Wikipedia article on SMTP, but any further progress will actually necessitate programming against a SMTP server.

Radio Buttons "Checked" Attribute Not Working

I could repro this by setting the name of input tag the same for two groups of input like below:

<body>
  <div>
      <div>
        <h3>Header1</h3>
      </div>
      <div>
          <input type="radio" name="gender" id="male_1" value="male"> Male<br>
          <input type="radio" name="gender" id="female_1" value="female" checked="checked"> Female<br>
          <input type="submit" value="Submit">
      </div>
  </div>

  <div>
      <div>
        <h3>Header2</h3>
      </div>
      <div>
          <input type="radio" name="gender" id="male_2" value="male"> Male<br>
          <input type="radio" name="gender" id="female_2" value="female" checked="checked"> Female<br>
          <input type="submit" value="Submit">
      </div>
  </div>
</body>

(To see this running, click here)

The following two solutions both fix the problem:

  1. Use different names for the inputs in the second group
  2. Use form tag instead of div tag for one of the groups (can't really figure out the real reason why this would solve the problem. Would love to hear some opinions on this!)

org.hibernate.exception.ConstraintViolationException: Could not execute JDBC batch update

Your Event.hbm.xml says:

<set name="attendees" cascade="all">
    <key column="attendeeId" />
    <one-to-many class="Attendee" />
</set>

In plain english, this means that the column Attendee.attendeeId is the foreign key for the association attendees and points to the primary key of Event.

When you add those Attendees to the event, hibernate updates the foreign key to express the changed association. Since that same column is also the primary key of Attendee, this violates the primary key constraint.

Since an Attendee's identity and event participation are independent, you should use separate columns for the primary and foreign key.

Edit: The selects might be because you don't appear to have a version property configured, making it impossible for hibernate to know whether the attendees already exists in the database (they might have been loaded in a previous session), so hibernate emits selects to check. As for the update statements, it was probably easier to implement that way. If you want to get rid of these separate updates, I recommend mapping the association from both ends, and declare the Event-end as inverse.

JavaScript - Getting HTML form values

If you want to retrieve the form values (such as those that would be sent using an HTTP POST) you can use:

JavaScript

const formData = new FormData(document.querySelector('form'))
for (var pair of formData.entries()) {
  // console.log(pair[0] + ': ' + pair[1]);
}

form-serialize (https://code.google.com/archive/p/form-serialize/)

serialize(document.forms[0]);

jQuery

$("form").serializeArray()

Difference between volatile and synchronized in Java

synchronized is method level/block level access restriction modifier. It will make sure that one thread owns the lock for critical section. Only the thread,which own a lock can enter synchronized block. If other threads are trying to access this critical section, they have to wait till current owner releases the lock.

volatile is variable access modifier which forces all threads to get latest value of the variable from main memory. No locking is required to access volatile variables. All threads can access volatile variable value at same time.

A good example to use volatile variable : Date variable.

Assume that you have made Date variable volatile. All the threads, which access this variable always get latest data from main memory so that all threads show real (actual) Date value. You don't need different threads showing different time for same variable. All threads should show right Date value.

enter image description here

Have a look at this article for better understanding of volatile concept.

Lawrence Dol cleary explained your read-write-update query.

Regarding your other queries

When is it more suitable to declare variables volatile than access them through synchronized?

You have to use volatile if you think all threads should get actual value of the variable in real time like the example I have explained for Date variable.

Is it a good idea to use volatile for variables that depend on input?

Answer will be same as in first query.

Refer to this article for better understanding.

Python base64 data decode

Well, I assume you are not on Interactive Mode and you used this code to decode your string:

base64.b64decode(your_string)

Well first of all you need to assign the finished product to a variable to be able to be printed out:

code_string = base64.b64decode(your_string)

Then like any beginner programmer would know, you would print the results out: Python 2.7x:

print code_string

Python 3.x:

print(code_string)

After the successful decoding, you will get a string about the size of the not yet decoded string. I hope this helps you!

How to handle AccessViolationException

In .NET 4.0, the runtime handles certain exceptions raised as Windows Structured Error Handling (SEH) errors as indicators of Corrupted State. These Corrupted State Exceptions (CSE) are not allowed to be caught by your standard managed code. I won't get into the why's or how's here. Read this article about CSE's in the .NET 4.0 Framework:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd419661.aspx#id0070035

But there is hope. There are a few ways to get around this:

  1. Recompile as a .NET 3.5 assembly and run it in .NET 4.0.

  2. Add a line to your application's config file under the configuration/runtime element: <legacyCorruptedStateExceptionsPolicy enabled="true|false"/>

  3. Decorate the methods you want to catch these exceptions in with the HandleProcessCorruptedStateExceptions attribute. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/dd419661.aspx#id0070035 for details.

EDIT

Previously, I referenced a forum post for additional details. But since Microsoft Connect has been retired, here are the additional details in case you're interested:

From Gaurav Khanna, a developer from the Microsoft CLR Team

This behaviour is by design due to a feature of CLR 4.0 called Corrupted State Exceptions. Simply put, managed code shouldnt make an attempt to catch exceptions that indicate corrupted process state and AV is one of them.

He then goes on to reference the documentation on the HandleProcessCorruptedStateExceptionsAttribute and the above article. Suffice to say, it's definitely worth a read if you're considering catching these types of exceptions.

"Content is not allowed in prolog" when parsing perfectly valid XML on GAE

I zipped the xml in a Mac OS and sent it to a Windows machine, the default compression changes these files so the encoding sent this message.

HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

Just looking at the message it sounds like one or more of the components that you reference, or one or more of their dependencies is not registered properly.

If you know which component it is you can use regsvr32.exe to register it, just open a command prompt, go to the directory where the component is and type regsvr32 filename.dll (assuming it's a dll), if it works, try to run the code again otherwise come back here with the error.

If you don't know which component it is, try re-installing/repairing the GIS software (I assume you've installed some GIS software that includes the component you're trying to use).

Hibernate - Batch update returned unexpected row count from update: 0 actual row count: 0 expected: 1

I also came across the same challenge. In my case I was updating an object which was not even existing, using hibernateTemplate.

Actually in my application I was getting a DB object to update. And while updating its values, I also updated its ID by mistake, and went ahead to update it and came across the said error.

I am using hibernateTemplate for CRUD operations.

The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'. Parameter name: via

To re-cap the question in the OP:

I am connecting [to a WCF service] using WCFStorm which is able to retrieve all the meta data properly, but when I call the actual method I get:

The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'. Parameter name: via

The WCFStorm tutorials addresses this issue in Working with IIS and SSL.

Their solution worked for me:

  1. To fix the error, generate a client config that matches the wcf service configuration. The easiest way to do this is with Visual Studio.

    • Open Visual Studio and add a service reference to the service. VS will generate an app.config file that matches the service

    • Edit the app.config file so that it can be read by WCFStorm. Please see Loading Client App.config files. Ensure that the endpoint/@name and endpoint/@contract attributes match the values in wcfstorm.

  2. Load the modified app.config to WCFStorm [using the Client Config toobar button].

  3. Invoke the method. This time the method invocation will no longer fail

Item (1) last bullet in effect means to remove the namespace prefix that VS prepends to the endpoint contract attribute, by default "ServiceReference1"

<endpoint ... contract="ServiceReference1.ListsService" ... />

so in the app.config that you load into WCFStorm you want for ListsService:

<endpoint ... contract="ListsService" ... />

How to Cast Objects in PHP

You do not need casting. Everything is dynamic.

I have a class Discount.
I have several classes that extends this class:
ProductDiscount
StoreDiscount
ShippingDiscount
...

Somewhere in the code I have:

$pd = new ProductDiscount();
$pd->setDiscount(5, ProductDiscount::PRODUCT_DISCOUNT_PERCENT);
$pd->setProductId(1);

$this->discounts[] = $pd;

.....

$sd = new StoreDiscount();
$sd->setDiscount(5, StoreDiscount::STORE_DISCOUNT_PERCENT);
$sd->setStoreId(1);

$this->discounts[] = $sd;

And somewhere I have:

foreach ($this->discounts as $discount){

    if ($discount->getDiscountType()==Discount::DISCOUNT_TYPE_PRODUCT){

        $productDiscount = $discount; // you do not need casting.
        $amount = $productDiscount->getDiscountAmount($this->getItemTotalPrice());
        ...
    }

}// foreach

Where getDiscountAmount is ProductDiscount specific function, and getDiscountType is Discount specific function.

Using HTTPS with REST in Java

When you say "is there an easier way to... trust this cert", that's exactly what you're doing by adding the cert to your Java trust store. And this is very, very easy to do, and there's nothing you need to do within your client app to get that trust store recognized or utilized.

On your client machine, find where your cacerts file is (that's your default Java trust store, and is, by default, located at <java-home>/lib/security/certs/cacerts.

Then, type the following:

keytool -import -alias <Name for the cert> -file <the .cer file> -keystore <path to cacerts>

That will import the cert into your trust store, and after this, your client app will be able to connect to your Grizzly HTTPS server without issue.

If you don't want to import the cert into your default trust store -- i.e., you just want it to be available to this one client app, but not to anything else you run on your JVM on that machine -- then you can create a new trust store just for your app. Instead of passing keytool the path to the existing, default cacerts file, pass keytool the path to your new trust store file:

keytool -import -alias <Name for the cert> -file <the .cer file> -keystore <path to new trust store>

You'll be asked to set and verify a new password for the trust store file. Then, when you start your client app, start it with the following parameters:

java -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStore=<path to new trust store> -Djavax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword=<trust store password>

Easy cheesy, really.

Generating a drop down list of timezones with PHP

Using listAbbreviations() makes no sense as for every area it returns all the different offsets that were historically used there, not just current ones. The right base source of the list is definitely listIdentifiers().

I would generate the list just once and save it to avoid generating it for every request. I could refresh it once a month.

Also, I could put all the timezones info into a separate js-script and generate the select list itself on the client side. The js-script could be cached as well, timezones don't change often.

Also, using javascript on the client side, you can know the current local time, and hence you can find the zones that have the same time now (minutes may differ, so comparison should be approximate), and display them on the top of the list, so the user does not have to scroll through all the 400 items. You can also display adjacent zones (+/-1 hour) following.

Error 0x80005000 and DirectoryServices

I had this error as well and for me it was an OU with a forward slash in the name: "File/Folder Access Groups".

This forum thread pointed me in the right direction. In the end, calling .Replace("/","\\/") on each path value before use solved the problem for me.

java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: javax/mail/Authenticator, whats wrong?

When I had this problem, I had included the mail-api.jar in my maven pom file. That's the API specification only. The fix is to replace this:

<!-- DO NOT USE - it's just the API, not an implementation -->
<groupId>javax.mail</groupId>
<artifactId>javax.mail-api</artifactId>

with the reference implementation of that api:

<groupId>com.sun.mail</groupId>
<artifactId>javax.mail</artifactId>

I know it has sun in the package name, but that's the latest version. I learned this from https://stackoverflow.com/a/28935760/1128668

Try/catch does not seem to have an effect

Edit: As stated in the comments, the following solution applies to PowerShell V1 only.

See this blog post on "Technical Adventures of Adam Weigert" for details on how to implement this.

Example usage (copy/paste from Adam Weigert's blog):

Try {
    echo " ::Do some work..."
    echo " ::Try divide by zero: $(0/0)"
} -Catch {
    echo " ::Cannot handle the error (will rethrow): $_"
    #throw $_
} -Finally {
    echo " ::Cleanup resources..."
}

Otherwise you'll have to use exception trapping.

Excel "External table is not in the expected format."

Just add my case. My xls file was created by a data export function from a website, the file extention is xls, it can be normally opened by MS Excel 2003. But both Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 and Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 got an "External table is not in the expected format" exception.

Finally, the problem is, just as the exception said, "it's not in the expected format". Though it's extention name is xls, but when I open it with a text editor, it is actually a well-formed html file, all data are in a <table>, each <tr> is a row and each <td> is a cell. Then I think I can parse it in a html way.

How to fix "could not find a base address that matches schema http"... in WCF

If it is hosted in IIS, there is no need to specify a base address, it will be the address of the virtual directory.

Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created

Reference the handle of the associated control in its creator, like so:

Note: Be wary of this solution.If a control has a handle it is much slower to do things like set the size and location of it. This makes InitializeComponent much slower. A better solution is to not background anything before the control has a handle.

Large WCF web service request failing with (400) HTTP Bad Request

Try setting maxReceivedMessageSize on the server too, e.g. to 4MB:

    <binding name="MyService.MyServiceBinding"
           maxReceivedMessageSize="4194304">

The main reason the default (65535 I believe) is so low is to reduce the risk of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. You need to set it bigger than the maximum request size on the server, and the maximum response size on the client. If you're in an Intranet environment, the risk of DoS attacks is probably low, so it's probably safe to use a value much higher than you expect to need.

By the way a couple of tips for troubleshooting problems connecting to WCF services:

  • Enable tracing on the server as described in this MSDN article.

  • Use an HTTP debugging tool such as Fiddler on the client to inspect the HTTP traffic.

LaTeX source code listing like in professional books

And please, whatever you do, configure the listings package to use fixed-width font (as in your example; you'll find the option in the documentation). Default setting uses proportional font typeset on a grid, which is, IMHO, incredibly ugly and unreadable, as can be seen from the other answers with pictures. I am personally very irritated when I must read some code typeset in a proportional font.

Try setting fixed-width font with this:

\lstset{basicstyle=\ttfamily}

https with WCF error: "Could not find base address that matches scheme https"

It turned out that my problem was that I was using a load balancer to handle the SSL, which then sent it over http to the actual server, which then complained.

Description of a fix is here: http://blog.hackedbrain.com/2006/09/26/how-to-ssl-passthrough-with-wcf-or-transportwithmessagecredential-over-plain-http/

Edit: I fixed my problem, which was slightly different, after talking to microsoft support.

My silverlight app had its endpoint address in code going over https to the load balancer. The load balancer then changed the endpoint address to http and to point to the actual server that it was going to. So on each server's web config I added a listenUri for the endpoint that was http instead of https

<endpoint address="" listenUri="http://[LOAD_BALANCER_ADDRESS]" ... />

How do I use 3DES encryption/decryption in Java?

Here is a solution using the javax.crypto library and the apache commons codec library for encoding and decoding in Base64:

import java.security.spec.KeySpec;
import javax.crypto.Cipher;
import javax.crypto.SecretKey;
import javax.crypto.SecretKeyFactory;
import javax.crypto.spec.DESedeKeySpec;
import org.apache.commons.codec.binary.Base64;

public class TrippleDes {

    private static final String UNICODE_FORMAT = "UTF8";
    public static final String DESEDE_ENCRYPTION_SCHEME = "DESede";
    private KeySpec ks;
    private SecretKeyFactory skf;
    private Cipher cipher;
    byte[] arrayBytes;
    private String myEncryptionKey;
    private String myEncryptionScheme;
    SecretKey key;

    public TrippleDes() throws Exception {
        myEncryptionKey = "ThisIsSpartaThisIsSparta";
        myEncryptionScheme = DESEDE_ENCRYPTION_SCHEME;
        arrayBytes = myEncryptionKey.getBytes(UNICODE_FORMAT);
        ks = new DESedeKeySpec(arrayBytes);
        skf = SecretKeyFactory.getInstance(myEncryptionScheme);
        cipher = Cipher.getInstance(myEncryptionScheme);
        key = skf.generateSecret(ks);
    }

        String encryptedString = null;
        try {
            cipher.init(Cipher.ENCRYPT_MODE, key);
            byte[] plainText = unencryptedString.getBytes(UNICODE_FORMAT);
            byte[] encryptedText = cipher.doFinal(plainText);
            encryptedString = new String(Base64.encodeBase64(encryptedText));
        } catch (Exception e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }

        String encrypted=td.encrypt(target);
        String decrypted=td.decrypt(encrypted);

        System.out.println("Encrypted String:" + encrypted);
        System.out.println("Decrypted String:" + decrypted);

    }

}

Running the above program results with the following output:

String To Encrypt: imparator
Encrypted String:FdBNaYWfjpWN9eYghMpbRA==
Decrypted String:imparator

How do I enable MSDTC on SQL Server?

I've found that the best way to debug is to use the microsoft tool called DTCPing

  1. Copy the file to both the server (DB) and the client (Application server/client pc)
    • Start it at the server and the client
    • At the server: fill in the client netbios computer name and try to setup a DTC connection
    • Restart both applications.
    • At the client: fill in the server netbios computer name and try to setup a DTC connection

I've had my fare deal of problems in our old company network, and I've got a few tips:

  • if you get the error message "Gethostbyname failed" it means the computer can not find the other computer by its netbios name. The server could for instance resolve and ping the client, but that works on a DNS level. Not on a netbios lookup level. Using WINS servers or changing the LMHOST (dirty) will solve this problem.
  • if you get an error "Acces Denied", the security settings don't match. You should compare the security tab for the msdtc and get the server and client to match. One other thing to look at is the RestrictRemoteClients value. Depending on your OS version and more importantly the Service Pack, this value can be different.
  • Other connection problems:
    • The firewall between the server and the client must allow communication over port 135. And more importantly the connection can be initiated from both sites (I had a lot of problems with the firewall people in my company because they assumed only the server would open an connection on to that port)
    • The protocol returns a random port to connect to for the real transaction communication. Firewall people don't like that, they like to restrict the ports to a certain range. You can restrict the RPC dynamic port generation to a certain range using the keys as described in How to configure RPC dynamic port allocation to work with firewalls.

In my experience, if the DTCPing is able to setup a DTC connection initiated from the client and initiated from the server, your transactions are not the problem any more.

Setting default permissions for newly created files and sub-directories under a directory in Linux?

To get the right ownership, you can set the group setuid bit on the directory with

chmod g+rwxs dirname

This will ensure that files created in the directory are owned by the group. You should then make sure everyone runs with umask 002 or 007 or something of that nature---this is why Debian and many other linux systems are configured with per-user groups by default.

I don't know of a way to force the permissions you want if the user's umask is too strong.

Check service dependencies if they are disabled.

Set those dependencies to Automatic, Start them and it should work.

Remove Item from ArrayList

You can remove elements from ArrayList using ListIterator,

ListIterator listIterator = List_Of_Array.listIterator();

 /* Use void remove() method of ListIterator to remove an element from List.
     It removes the last element returned by next or previous methods.
 */
listIterator.next();

//remove element returned by last next method
listIterator.remove();//remove element at 1st position
listIterator.next();
listIterator.next();
listIterator.remove();//remove element at 3rd position
listIterator.next();
listIterator.next();
listIterator.remove();//remove element at 5th position

Java Singleton and Synchronization

Yes, you need to make getInstance() synchronized. If it's not there might arise a situation where multiple instances of the class can be made.

Consider the case where you have two threads that call getInstance() at the same time. Now imagine T1 executes just past the instance == null check, and then T2 runs. At this point in time the instance is not created or set, so T2 will pass the check and create the instance. Now imagine that execution switches back to T1. Now the singleton is created, but T1 has already done the check! It will proceed to make the object again! Making getInstance() synchronized prevents this problem.

There a few ways to make singletons thread-safe, but making getInstance() synchronized is probably the simplest.

Make any file as executable

Let's say you have an executable file called migrate_linux_amd64 and you want to run this file as a command like "migrate"

  1. First test the executable file from the file location:
[oracle@localhost]$ ./migrate.linux-amd64
Usage: migrate OPTIONS COMMAND [arg...]
       migrate [ -version | -help ]

Options:
  -source Location of the migrations (driver://url)
  -path            Shorthand for -source=file://path
  -database Run migrations against this database (driver://url)
  -prefetch N Number of migrations to load in advance before executing (default 10)
  -lock-timeout N Allow N seconds to acquire database lock (default 15)
  -verbose         Print verbose logging
  -version         Print version
  -help            Print usage

Commands:
  goto V Migrate to version V
  up [N] Apply all or N up migrations
  down [N] Apply all or N down migrations
  drop         Drop everyting inside database
  force V Set version V but don't run migration (ignores dirty state)
  version      Print current migration version
  1. Make sure you have execute privileges on the file
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 oracle oinstall 7473971 May 18 2017 migrate.linux-amd64
    if not, run chmod +x migrate.linux-amd64

  2. Then copy your file to /usr/local/bin. This directory is owned by root, use sudo or switch to root and perform the following operation

sudo cp migrate.linux-amd64 /usr/local/bin
sudo chown oracle:oracle /user/local/bin/migrate.linux.amd64
  1. Then create a symbolic link like below
sudo ln /usr/local/bin/migrate.linux.amd64 /usr/local/bin/migrate
sudo chown oracle:oracle /usr/local/bin/migrate
  1. Finally add /usr/local/bin to your path or user profile
export PATH = $PATH:/usr/local/bin
  1. Then run the command as "migrate"
[oracle@localhost]$ migrate
Usage: migrate OPTIONS COMMAND [arg...]
       migrate [ -version | -help ]

Options:
  -source Location of the migrations (driver://url)
  -path            Shorthand for -source=file://path
  -database Run migrations against this database (driver://url)
  -prefetch N Number of migrations to load in advance before executing (default 10)
  -lock-timeout N Allow N seconds to acquire database lock (default 15)
  -verbose         Print verbose logging
  -version         Print version
  -help            Print usage

Commands:
  goto V Migrate to version V
  up [N] Apply all or N up migrations
  down [N] Apply all or N down migrations
  drop         Drop everyting inside database
  force V Set version V but don't run migration (ignores dirty state)
  version      Print current migration version

pull/push from multiple remote locations

You'll need a script to loop through them. Git doesn't a provide a "push all." You could theoretically do a push in multiple threads, but a native method is not available.

Fetch is even more complicated, and I'd recommend doing that linearly.

I think your best answer is to have once machine that everybody does a push / pull to, if that's at all possible.

Add Header and Footer for PDF using iTextsharp

For iTextSharp 4.1.6, the last version of iTextSharp that was licensed as LGPL, the solution provided by Alvaro Patiño is both simple and effective.

Because documentation is somewhat scarse I'd like to extend his answer with this code snippet that can be used to change the appearance of the header and footer. By default they have a rather large font-size and a thick border, which many people will want to change.

// Parameters passed on to the function that creates the PDF
String headerText = "Your header text";
String footerText = "Page";

// Define a font and font-size in points (plus f for float) and pick a color
// This one is for both header and footer but you can also create seperate ones
Font fontHeaderFooter = FontFactory.GetFont("arial", 8f);
fontHeaderFooter.Color = Color.GRAY;

In Angular, how do you determine the active route?

start with importing RouterLinkActive in your .ts

import { RouterLinkActive } from '@angular/router';

Now use RouterLinkActive in your HTML

<span class="" routerLink ="/some_path" routerLinkActive="class_Name">Value</span></a>

provide some css to class "class_Name" , as when this link will be active/clicked you will find this class on span while inspection.

Android: making a fullscreen application

If you Checkout the current Android Studio. You could create a New Activity with the Full-screen template. If you Create such an Activity. You could look into the basic code that Android Studio uses to switch between full-screen and normal mode.

Gallery Showing the Full-Screen Activity

This is the code I found in there. With some minor tweaks I'm sure you'll get what you need.

public class FullscreenActivity extends AppCompatActivity {
    private static final boolean AUTO_HIDE = true;
    private static final int AUTO_HIDE_DELAY_MILLIS = 3000;
    private static final int UI_ANIMATION_DELAY = 300;
    private final Handler mHideHandler = new Handler();
    private View mContentView;
    private final Runnable mHidePart2Runnable = new Runnable() {
        @SuppressLint("InlinedApi")
        @Override
        public void run() {
            // Delayed removal of status and navigation bar

            // Note that some of these constants are new as of API 16 (Jelly Bean)
            // and API 19 (KitKat). It is safe to use them, as they are inlined
            // at compile-time and do nothing on earlier devices.
            mContentView.setSystemUiVisibility(View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LOW_PROFILE
                    | View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_FULLSCREEN

        }
    };

        mVisible = true;
        mControlsView = findViewById(R.id.fullscreen_content_controls);
        mContentView = findViewById(R.id.fullscreen_content);

        // created, to briefly hint to the user that UI controls
        // are available.
        delayedHide(100);
    }
    private void toggle() {
        if (mVisible) {
            hide();
        } else {
            show();
        }
    }
    private void hide() {
        // Hide UI first
        ActionBar actionBar = getSupportActionBar();
        if (actionBar != null) {
            actionBar.hide();
        }
        mControlsView.setVisibility(View.GONE);
        mVisible = false;

        // Schedule a runnable to remove the status and navigation bar after a delay
        mHideHandler.removeCallbacks(mShowPart2Runnable);
        mHideHandler.postDelayed(mHidePart2Runnable, UI_ANIMATION_DELAY);
    }
    @SuppressLint("InlinedApi")
    private void show() {
        // Show the system bar
        mContentView.setSystemUiVisibility(View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LAYOUT_FULLSCREEN
                | View.SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LAYOUT_HIDE_NAVIGATION);
        mVisible = true;

        // Schedule a runnable to display UI elements after a delay
        mHideHandler.removeCallbacks(mHidePart2Runnable);
        mHideHandler.postDelayed(mShowPart2Runnable, UI_ANIMATION_DELAY);
    }
    private void delayedHide(int delayMillis) {
        mHideHandler.removeCallbacks(mHideRunnable);
        mHideHandler.postDelayed(mHideRunnable, delayMillis);
    }
}

Now I went further to checkout how this could be done in a more simple fashion. Making changes to the AppTheme style in your styles.xml file would be most helpful. This changes all your activities to a Full Screen view.

<item name="windowActionBar">false</item>
<item name="windowNoTitle">true</item>
<item name="android:windowFullscreen">true</item>

If you want only some activities to look Full Screen, you could create a new AppTheme that extends your current app theme and include the above code in that new style that you created. This way, you just have to set style=yournewapptheme in the manifest of whichever activity you want to go Full Screen

SQL Server - Return value after INSERT

Entity Framework performs something similar to gbn's answer:

DECLARE @generated_keys table([Id] uniqueidentifier)

INSERT INTO Customers(FirstName)
OUTPUT inserted.CustomerID INTO @generated_keys
VALUES('bob');

SELECT t.[CustomerID]
FROM @generated_keys AS g
   JOIN dbo.Customers AS t
   ON g.Id = t.CustomerID
WHERE @@ROWCOUNT > 0

The output results are stored in a temporary table variable, and then selected back to the client. Have to be aware of the gotcha:

inserts can generate more than one row, so the variable can hold more than one row, so you can be returned more than one ID

I have no idea why EF would inner join the ephemeral table back to the real table (under what circumstances would the two not match).

But that's what EF does.

SQL Server 2008 or newer only. If it's 2005 then you're out of luck.

basic authorization command for curl

How do I set up the basic authorization?

All you need to do is use -u, --user USER[:PASSWORD]. Behind the scenes curl builds the Authorization header with base64 encoded credentials for you.

Example:

curl -u username:password -i -H 'Accept:application/json' http://example.com

Domain Account keeping locking out with correct password every few minutes

Try this solution from http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itprosecurity/thread/e1ef04fa-6aea-47fe-9392-45929239bd68

Microsoft Support found the problem for us. Our domain accounts were locking when a Windows 7 computer was started. The Windows 7 computer had a hidden old password from that domain account. There are passwords that can be stored in the SYSTEM context that can't be seen in the normal Credential Manager view.

Download PsExec.exe from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx and copy it to C:\Windows\System32.

From a command prompt run: psexec -i -s -d cmd.exe

From the new DOS window run: rundll32 keymgr.dll,KRShowKeyMgr

Remove any items that appear in the list of Stored User Names and Passwords. Restart the computer.

Add vertical scroll bar to panel

AutoScroll is really the solution! You just have to set AutoScrollMargin to 0, 1000 or something like this, then use it to scroll down and add buttons and items there!

How to sort an STL vector?

std::sort(object.begin(), object.end(), pred());

where, pred() is a function object defining the order on objects of myclass. Alternatively, you can define myclass::operator<.

For example, you can pass a lambda:

std::sort(object.begin(), object.end(),
          [] (myclass const& a, myclass const& b) { return a.v < b.v; });

Or if you're stuck with C++03, the function object approach (v is the member on which you want to sort):

struct pred {
    bool operator()(myclass const & a, myclass const & b) const {
        return a.v < b.v;
    }
};

CURL ERROR: Recv failure: Connection reset by peer - PHP Curl

Introduction

The remote server has sent you a RST packet, which indicates an immediate dropping of the connection, rather than the usual handshake.

Possible Causes

A. TCP/IP

It might be TCP/IP issue you need to resolve with your host or upgrade your OS most times connection is close before remote server before it finished downloading the content resulting to Connection reset by peer.....

B. Kannel Bug

Note that there are some issues with TCP window scaling on some Linux kernels after v2.6.17. See the following bug reports for more information:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/59331

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.20/+bug/89160

C. PHP & CURL Bug

You are using PHP/5.3.3 which has some serious bugs too ... i would advice you work with a more recent version of PHP and CURL

D. Maximum Transmission Unit

One common cause of this error is that the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) size of packets travelling over your network connection have been changed from the default of 1500 bytes. If you have configured VPN this most likely must changed during configuration

D. Firewall : iptables

If you don't know your way around this guys they would cause some serious issues .. try and access the server you are connecting to check the following

  • You have access to port 80 on that server

Example

 -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 80 -j ACCEPT`
  • The Following is at the last line not before any other ACCEPT

Example

  -A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -j REJECT --reject-with icmp-host-prohibited
  • Check for ALL DROP , REJECT and make sure they are not blocking your connection

  • Temporary allow all connection as see if it foes through

Experiment

Try a different server or remote server ( So many fee cloud hosting online) and test the same script .. if it works then i guesses are as good as true ... You need to update your system

How to apply a CSS filter to a background image

The following is a simple solution for modern browsers in pure CSS with a 'before' pseudo element, like the solution from Matthew Wilcoxson.

To avoid the need of accessing the pseudo element for changing the image and other attributes in JavaScript, simply use inherit as the value and access them via the parent element (here body).

body::before {
    content: ""; /* Important */
    z-index: -1; /* Important */
    position: inherit;
    left: inherit;
    top: inherit;
    width: inherit;
    height: inherit;
    background-image: inherit;
    background-size: cover;
    filter: blur(8px);
}

body {
  background-image: url("xyz.jpg");
  background-size: 0 0;  /* Image should not be drawn here */
  width: 100%;
  height: 100%;
  position: fixed; /* Or absolute for scrollable backgrounds */
}

Using Docker-Compose, how to execute multiple commands

There are many great answers in this thread already, however, I found that a combination of a few of them seemed to work best, especially for Debian based users.

How can I go back/route-back on vue-router?

You can use Programmatic Navigation.In order to go back, you use this:

router.go(n)

Where n can be positive or negative (to go back). This is the same as history.back().So you can have your element like this:

<a @click="$router.go(-1)">back</a>

NullPointerException in Java with no StackTrace

Here is an explanation : Hotspot caused exceptions to lose their stack traces in production – and the fix

I've tested it on Mac OS X

  • java version "1.6.0_26"
  • Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_26-b03-383-11A511)
  • Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.1-b02-383, mixed mode)

    Object string = "abcd";
    int i = 0;
    while (i < 12289) {
        i++;
        try {
            Integer a = (Integer) string;
        } catch (Exception e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    }

For this specific fragment of code, 12288 iterations (+frequency?) seems to be the limit where JVM has decided to use preallocated exception...

Add text to textarea - Jquery

That should work. Better if you pass a function to val:

$('#replyBox').val(function(i, text) {
    return text + quote;
});

This way you avoid searching the element and calling val twice.

How to use multiprocessing queue in Python?

My main problem is that I really don't know how to implement multiprocessing.queue correctly, you cannot really instantiate the object for each process since they will be separate queues, how do you make sure that all processes relate to a shared queue (or in this case, queues)

This is a simple example of a reader and writer sharing a single queue... The writer sends a bunch of integers to the reader; when the writer runs out of numbers, it sends 'DONE', which lets the reader know to break out of the read loop.

from multiprocessing import Process, Queue
import time
import sys

def reader_proc(queue):
    ## Read from the queue; this will be spawned as a separate Process
    while True:
        msg = queue.get() # Read from the queue and do nothing
        if (msg == 'DONE'):
            break

def writer(count, queue):
    ## Write to the queue
    for ii in range(0, count):
        queue.put(ii) # Write 'count' numbers into the queue
    queue.put('DONE')

if __name__=='__main__':
    pqueue = Queue() # writer() writes to pqueue from _this_ process
    for count in [10**4, 10**5, 10**6]:
        ### reader_proc() reads from pqueue as a separate process
        reader_p = Process(target=reader_proc, args=((pqueue),))
        reader_p.daemon = True
        reader_p.start()        # Launch reader_proc() as a separate python process

        _start = time.time()
        writer(count, pqueue) # Send a lot of stuff to reader()
        reader_p.join() # Wait for the reader to finish
        print("Sending {0} numbers to Queue() took {1} seconds".format(count,
            (time.time() - _start)))

How to request Google to re-crawl my website?

There are two options. The first (and better) one is using the Fetch as Google option in Webmaster Tools that Mike Flynn commented about. Here are detailed instructions:

  1. Go to: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and log in
  2. If you haven't already, add and verify the site with the "Add a Site" button
  3. Click on the site name for the one you want to manage
  4. Click Crawl -> Fetch as Google
  5. Optional: if you want to do a specific page only, type in the URL
  6. Click Fetch
  7. Click Submit to Index
  8. Select either "URL" or "URL and its direct links"
  9. Click OK and you're done.

With the option above, as long as every page can be reached from some link on the initial page or a page that it links to, Google should recrawl the whole thing. If you want to explicitly tell it a list of pages to crawl on the domain, you can follow the directions to submit a sitemap.

Your second (and generally slower) option is, as seanbreeden pointed out, submitting here: http://www.google.com/addurl/

Update 2019:

  1. Login to - Google Search Console
  2. Add a site and verify it with the available methods.
  3. After verification from the console, click on URL Inspection.
  4. In the Search bar on top, enter your website URL or custom URLs for inspection and enter.
  5. After Inspection, it'll show an option to Request Indexing
  6. Click on it and GoogleBot will add your website in a Queue for crawling.

Change status bar color with AppCompat ActionBarActivity

I don't think the status bar color has been implemented in AppCompat yet. These are the attributes which are available:

    <!-- ============= -->
    <!-- Color palette -->
    <!-- ============= -->

    <!-- The primary branding color for the app. By default, this is the color applied to the
         action bar background. -->
    <attr name="colorPrimary" format="color" />

    <!-- Dark variant of the primary branding color. By default, this is the color applied to
         the status bar (via statusBarColor) and navigation bar (via navigationBarColor). -->
    <attr name="colorPrimaryDark" format="color" />

    <!-- Bright complement to the primary branding color. By default, this is the color applied
         to framework controls (via colorControlActivated). -->
    <attr name="colorAccent" format="color" />

    <!-- The color applied to framework controls in their normal state. -->
    <attr name="colorControlNormal" format="color" />

    <!-- The color applied to framework controls in their activated (ex. checked) state. -->
    <attr name="colorControlActivated" format="color" />

    <!-- The color applied to framework control highlights (ex. ripples, list selectors). -->
    <attr name="colorControlHighlight" format="color" />

    <!-- The color applied to framework buttons in their normal state. -->
    <attr name="colorButtonNormal" format="color" />

    <!-- The color applied to framework switch thumbs in their normal state. -->
    <attr name="colorSwitchThumbNormal" format="color" />

positional argument follows keyword argument

The grammar of the language specifies that positional arguments appear before keyword or starred arguments in calls:

argument_list        ::=  positional_arguments ["," starred_and_keywords]
                            ["," keywords_arguments]
                          | starred_and_keywords ["," keywords_arguments]
                          | keywords_arguments

Specifically, a keyword argument looks like this: tag='insider trading!' while a positional argument looks like this: ..., exchange, .... The problem lies in that you appear to have copy/pasted the parameter list, and left some of the default values in place, which makes them look like keyword arguments rather than positional ones. This is fine, except that you then go back to using positional arguments, which is a syntax error.

Also, when an argument has a default value, such as price=None, that means you don't have to provide it. If you don't provide it, it will use the default value instead.

To resolve this error, convert your later positional arguments into keyword arguments, or, if they have default values and you don't need to use them, simply don't specify them at all:

order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol,
    transaction_type, quantity)

# Fully positional:
order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol, transaction_type, quantity, price, product, order_type, validity, disclosed_quantity, trigger_price, squareoff_value, stoploss_value, trailing_stoploss, variety, tag)

# Some positional, some keyword (all keywords at end):

order_id = kite.order_place(self, exchange, tradingsymbol,
    transaction_type, quantity, tag='insider trading!')

javascript node.js next()

It's basically like a callback that express.js use after a certain part of the code is executed and done, you can use it to make sure that part of code is done and what you wanna do next thing, but always be mindful you only can do one res.send in your each REST block...

So you can do something like this as a simple next() example:

app.get("/", (req, res, next) => {
  console.log("req:", req, "res:", res);
  res.send(["data": "whatever"]);
  next();
},(req, res) =>
  console.log("it's all done!");
);

It's also very useful when you'd like to have a middleware in your app...

To load the middleware function, call app.use(), specifying the middleware function. For example, the following code loads the myLogger middleware function before the route to the root path (/).

var express = require('express');
var app = express();

var myLogger = function (req, res, next) {
  console.log('LOGGED');
  next();
}

app.use(myLogger);

app.get('/', function (req, res) {
  res.send('Hello World!');
})

app.listen(3000);

Limit the output of the TOP command to a specific process name

I prefer the following so I can still use top interactively without having to look up the pids each time I run it:

top -p `pgrep process-name | tr "\\n" "," | sed 's/,$//'`

Of course if the processes change you'll have to re-run the command.

  • pgrep process-name returns a list of process ids which are separated by newlines
  • tr "\\n" "," translates these newlines into commas, because top wants a comma-separated list of process ids
  • sed is a stream editor, and sed 's/,$//' is used here to remove the trailing comma

View RDD contents in Python Spark?

Try this:

data = f.flatMap(lambda x: x.split(' '))
map = data.map(lambda x: (x, 1))
mapreduce = map.reduceByKey(lambda x,y: x+y)
result = mapreduce.collect()

Please note that when you run collect(), the RDD - which is a distributed data set is aggregated at the driver node and is essentially converted to a list. So obviously, it won't be a good idea to collect() a 2T data set. If all you need is a couple of samples from your RDD, use take(10).

Listing files in a directory matching a pattern in Java

Since Java 8 you can use lambdas and achieve shorter code:

File dir = new File(xmlFilesDirectory);
File[] files = dir.listFiles((d, name) -> name.endsWith(".xml"));

SQL-Server: Is there a SQL script that I can use to determine the progress of a SQL Server backup or restore process?

Here's a simple script that generally does the trick for me:

  FROM sys.dm_exec_requests
  WHERE command IN ('RESTORE DATABASE','BACKUP DATABASE')

JavaScript - XMLHttpRequest, Access-Control-Allow-Origin errors

I think you've missed the point of access control.

A quick recap on why CORS exists: Since JS code from a website can execute XHR, that site could potentially send requests to other sites, masquerading as you and exploiting the trust those sites have in you(e.g. if you have logged in, a malicious site could attempt to extract information or execute actions you never wanted) - this is called a CSRF attack. To prevent that, web browsers have very stringent limitations on what XHR you can send - you are generally limited to just your domain, and so on.

Now, sometimes it's useful for a site to allow other sites to contact it - sites that provide APIs or services, like the one you're trying to access, would be prime candidates. CORS was developed to allow site A(e.g. paste.ee) to say "I trust site B, so you can send XHR from it to me". This is specified by site A sending "Access-Control-Allow-Origin" headers in its responses.

In your specific case, it seems that paste.ee doesn't bother to use CORS. Your best bet is to contact the site owner and find out why, if you want to use paste.ee with a browser script. Alternatively, you could try using an extension(those should have higher XHR privileges).

How to correctly implement custom iterators and const_iterators?

  • Choose type of iterator which fits your container: input, output, forward etc.
  • Use base iterator classes from standard library. For example, std::iterator with random_access_iterator_tag.These base classes define all type definitions required by STL and do other work.
  • To avoid code duplication iterator class should be a template class and be parametrized by "value type", "pointer type", "reference type" or all of them (depends on implementation). For example:

    // iterator class is parametrized by pointer type
    template <typename PointerType> class MyIterator {
        // iterator class definition goes here
    };

    typedef MyIterator<int*> iterator_type;
    typedef MyIterator<const int*> const_iterator_type;

    Notice iterator_type and const_iterator_type type definitions: they are types for your non-const and const iterators.

EDIT: std::iterator is deprecated since C++17. See a relating discussion here.

Run java jar file on a server as background process

You can try this:

#!/bin/sh
nohup java -jar /web/server.jar &

The & symbol, switches the program to run in the background.

The nohup utility makes the command passed as an argument run in the background even after you log out.

Adding a leading zero to some values in column in MySQL

Possibly:

select lpad(column, 8, 0) from table;

Edited in response to question from mylesg, in comments below:

ok, seems to make the change on the query- but how do I make it stick (change it) permanently in the table? I tried an UPDATE instead of SELECT

I'm assuming that you used a query similar to:

UPDATE table SET columnName=lpad(nums,8,0);

If that was successful, but the table's values are still without leading-zeroes, then I'd suggest you probably set the column as a numeric type? If that's the case then you'd need to alter the table so that the column is of a text/varchar() type in order to preserve the leading zeroes:

First:

ALTER TABLE `table` CHANGE `numberColumn` `numberColumn` CHAR(8);

Second, run the update:

UPDATE table SET `numberColumn`=LPAD(`numberColum`, 8, '0');

This should, then, preserve the leading-zeroes; the down-side is that the column is no longer strictly of a numeric type; so you may have to enforce more strict validation (depending on your use-case) to ensure that non-numerals aren't entered into that column.

What is the difference between "expose" and "publish" in Docker?

Most people use docker compose with networks. The documentation states:

The Docker network feature supports creating networks without the need to expose ports within the network, for detailed information see the overview of this feature).

Which means that if you use networks for communication between containers you don't need to worry about exposing ports.

Make a table fill the entire window

Try using

<html style="height: 100%;">
    <body style="height: 100%;">
        <table style="height: 100%;">
        ...

in order to force all parents of the table element to expand over the available vertical space (which will eliminate the need to use absolute positioning).

Works in Firefox 28, IE 11 and Chromium 34 (and hence probably Google Chrome as well)

How do I get first element rather than using [0] in jQuery?

With the assumption that there's only one element:

 $("#grid_GridHeader")[0]
 $("#grid_GridHeader").get(0)
 $("#grid_GridHeader").get()

...are all equivalent, returning the single underlying element.

From the jQuery source code, you can see that get(0), under the covers, essentially does the same thing as the [0] approach:

 // Return just the object
 ( num < 0 ? this.slice(num)[ 0 ] : this[ num ] );

SELECT from nothing?

It's not consistent across vendors - Oracle, MySQL, and DB2 support dual:

SELECT 'Hello world'
  FROM DUAL

...while SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and SQLite don't require the FROM DUAL:

SELECT 'Hello world'

MySQL does support both ways.

Django: multiple models in one template using forms

According to Django documentation, inline formsets are for this purpose: "Inline formsets is a small abstraction layer on top of model formsets. These simplify the case of working with related objects via a foreign key".

See https://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/topics/forms/modelforms/#inline-formsets

User Control - Custom Properties

It is very simple, just add a property:

public string Value {
  get { return textBox1.Text; }
  set { textBox1.Text = value; }
}

Using the Text property is a bit trickier, the UserControl class intentionally hides it. You'll need to override the attributes to put it back in working order:

[Browsable(true), EditorBrowsable(EditorBrowsableState.Always), Bindable(true)]
[DesignerSerializationVisibility(DesignerSerializationVisibility.Visible)]
public override string Text {
  get { return textBox1.Text; }
  set { textBox1.Text = value; }
}

Activate a virtualenv with a Python script

It turns out that, yes, the problem is not simple, but the solution is.

First I had to create a shell script to wrap the "source" command. That said I used the "." instead, because I've read that it's better to use it than source for Bash scripts.

#!/bin/bash
. /path/to/env/bin/activate

Then from my Python script I can simply do this:

import os
os.system('/bin/bash --rcfile /path/to/myscript.sh')

The whole trick lies within the --rcfile argument.

When the Python interpreter exits it leaves the current shell in the activated environment.

Win!

echo key and value of an array without and with loop

Without a loop, just for the kicks of it...

You can either convert the array to a non-associative one, by doing:

$page = array_values($page);

And then acessing each element by it's zero-based index:

echo $page[0]; // 'index.html'
echo $page[1]; // 'services.html'

Or you can use a slightly more complicated version:

$value = array_slice($page, 0, 1);

echo key($value); // Home
echo current($value); // index.html

$value = array_slice($page, 1, 1);

echo key($value); // Service
echo current($value); // services.html

How to convert a full date to a short date in javascript?

I wanted the date to be shown in the type='time' field.

The normal conversion skips the zeros and the form field does not show the value and puts forth an error in the console saying the format needs to be yyyy-mm-dd.

Hence I added a small statement (check)?(true):(false) as follows:

makeShortDate=(date)=>{
yy=date.getFullYear()
mm=date.getMonth()
dd=date.getDate()
shortDate=`${yy}-${(mm<10)?0:''}${mm+1}-${(dd<10)?0:''}${dd}`;
return shortDate;

Are multiple `.gitignore`s frowned on?

I can think of at least two situations where you would want to have multiple .gitignore files in different (sub)directories.

  • Different directories have different types of file to ignore. For example the .gitignore in the top directory of your project ignores generated programs, while Documentation/.gitignore ignores generated documentation.

  • Ignore given files only in given (sub)directory (you can use /sub/foo in .gitignore, though).

Please remember that patterns in .gitignore file apply recursively to the (sub)directory the file is in and all its subdirectories, unless pattern contains '/' (so e.g. pattern name applies to any file named name in given directory and all its subdirectories, while /name applies to file with this name only in given directory).

ASP.NET MVC Ajax Error handling

Equivalent of LIMIT for DB2

Theres these available options:-

DB2 has several strategies to cope with this problem.
You can use the "scrollable cursor" in feature.
In this case you can open a cursor and, instead of re-issuing a query you can FETCH forward and backward.
This works great if your application can hold state since it doesn't require DB2 to rerun the query every time.
You can use the ROW_NUMBER() OLAP function to number rows and then return the subset you want.
This is ANSI SQL
You can use the ROWNUM pseudo columns which does the same as ROW_NUMBER() but is suitable if you have Oracle skills.
You can use LIMIT and OFFSET if you are more leaning to a mySQL or PostgreSQL dialect.

How to install .MSI using PowerShell

You can use:

msiexec /i "c:\package.msi"

You can also add some more optional parameters. There are common msi parameters and parameters which are specific for your installer. For common parameters just call msiexec

Difference between add(), replace(), and addToBackStack()

One more important difference between add and replace is this:

replace removes the existing fragment and adds a new fragment. This means when you press back button the fragment that got replaced will be created with its onCreateView being invoked. Whereas add retains the existing fragments and adds a new fragment that means existing fragment will be active and they wont be in 'paused' state hence when a back button is pressed onCreateView is not called for the existing fragment(the fragment which was there before new fragment was added).

In terms of fragment's life cycle events onPause, onResume, onCreateView and other life cycle events will be invoked in case of replace but they wont be invoked in case of add.

Edit: One should be careful if she is using some kind of event bus library like Greenrobot's Eventbus and reusing the same fragment to stack the fragment on top of other via add. In this scenario, even though you follow the best practice and register the event bus in onResume and unregister in onPause, event bus would still be active in each instance of the added fragment as add fragment wont call either of these fragment life cycle methods. As a result event bus listener in each active instance of the fragment would process the same event which may not be what you want.

How to define custom configuration variables in rails

I created a simple plugin for YAML settings: Yettings

It works in a similar fashion to the code in khelll's answer, but you only need to add this YAML configuration file:

app/config/yetting.yml

The plugin dynamically creates a class that allows you to access the YML settings as class methods in your app like so:

Yetting.your_setting

Also, if you want to use multiple settings files with unique names, you can place them in a subdirectory inside app/config like this:

app/config/yettings/first.yml
app/config/yettings/second.yml

Then you can access the values like this:

FirstYetting.your_setting
SecondYetting.your_setting

It also provides you with default settings that can be overridden per environment. You can also use erb inside the yml file.

Get the position of a div/span tag

You can call the method getBoundingClientRect() on a reference to the element. Then you can examine the top, left, right and/or bottom properties...

var offsets = document.getElementById('11a').getBoundingClientRect();
var top = offsets.top;
var left = offsets.left;

If using jQuery, you can use the more succinct code...

var offsets = $('#11a').offset();
var top = offsets.top;
var left = offsets.left;

Image Processing: Algorithm Improvement for 'Coca-Cola Can' Recognition

Fun problem: when I glanced at your bottle image I thought it was a can too. But, as a human, what I did to tell the difference is that I then noticed it was also a bottle...

So, to tell cans and bottles apart, how about simply scanning for bottles first? If you find one, mask out the label before looking for cans.

Not too hard to implement if you're already doing cans. The real downside is it doubles your processing time. (But thinking ahead to real-world applications, you're going to end up wanting to do bottles anyway ;-)

Ajax - 500 Internal Server Error

Had the very same problem, then I remembered that for security reasons ASP doesn't expose the entire error or stack trace when accessing your site/service remotely, same as not being able to test a .asmx web service remotely, so I remoted into the sever and monitored my dev tools, and only then did I get the notorious message "Could not load file or assembly 'Newtonsoft.Json, Version=3.5.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=30ad4fe6b2a6aeed' or one of its dep...".

So log on the server and debug from there.

How to break out of the IF statement

just want to add another variant to update this wonderful "how to" list. Though, It may be really useful in more complicated cases:

try {
    if (something)
    {
        //some code
        if (something2)
        {
            throw new Exception("Weird-01.");
            // now You will go to the catch statement
        }
        if (something3)
        {
            throw new Exception("Weird-02.");
            // now You will go to the catch statement
        }
        //some code
        return;
    }
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
    Console.WriteLine(ex); // you will get your Weird-01 or Weird-02 here
}
// The code i want to go if the second or third if is true

PHP Include for HTML?

Here is the step by step process to include php code in html file ( Tested )

If PHP is working there is only one step left to use PHP scripts in files with *.html or *.htm extensions as well. The magic word is ".htaccess". Please see the Wikipedia definition of .htaccess to learn more about it. According to Wikipedia it is "a directory-level configuration file that allows for decentralized management of web server configuration."

You can probably use such a .htaccess configuration file for your purpose. In our case you want the webserver to parse HTML files like PHP files.

First, create a blank text file and name it ".htaccess". You might ask yourself why the file name starts with a dot. On Unix-like systems this means it is a dot-file is a hidden file. (Note: If your operating system does not allow file names starting with a dot just name the file "xyz.htaccess" temporarily. As soon as you have uploaded it to your webserver in a later step you can rename the file online to ".htaccess") Next, open the file with a simple text editor like the "Editor" in MS Windows. Paste the following line into the file: AddType application/x-httpd-php .html .htm If this does not work, please remove the line above from your file and paste this alternative line into it, for PHP5: AddType application/x-httpd-php5 .html .htm Now upload the .htaccess file to the root directory of your webserver. Make sure that the name of the file is ".htaccess". Your webserver should now parse *.htm and *.html files like PHP files.

You can try if it works by creating a HTML-File like the following. Name it "php-in-html-test.htm", paste the following code into it and upload it to the root directory of your webserver:

    <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN">
     <HTML>
 <HEAD>
 <TITLE>Use PHP in HTML files</TITLE>
 </HEAD>

   <BODY>
    <h1>
    <?php echo "It works!"; ?>
    </h1>
  </BODY>
 </HTML>

Try to open the file in your browser by typing in: http://www.your-domain.com/php-in-html-test.htm (once again, please replace your-domain.com by your own domain...) If your browser shows the phrase "It works!" everything works fine and you can use PHP in .*html and *.htm files from now on. However, if not, please try to use the alternative line in the .htaccess file as we showed above. If is still does not work please contact your hosting provider.

npm install from Git in a specific version

I needed to run two versions of tfjs-core and found that both needed to be built after being installed.

package.json:

"dependencies": {
  "tfjs-core-0.14.3": "git://github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-core#bb0a830b3bda1461327f083ceb3f889117209db2",
  "tfjs-core-1.1.0": "git://github.com/tensorflow/tfjs-core#220660ed8b9a252f9d0847a4f4e3c76ba5188669"
}

Then:

cd node_modules/tfjs-core-0.14.3 && yarn install && yarn build-npm && cd ../../
cd node_modules/tfjs-core-1.1.0  && yarn install && yarn build-npm && cd ../../

And finally, to use the libraries:

import * as tf0143 from '../node_modules/tfjs-core-0.14.3/dist/tf-core.min.js';
import * as tf110 from '../node_modules/tfjs-core-1.1.0/dist/tf-core.min.js';

This worked great but is most certainly #hoodrat

Where to find extensions installed folder for Google Chrome on Mac?

The default locations of Chrome's profile directory are defined at http://www.chromium.org/user-experience/user-data-directory. For Chrome on Mac, it's

~/Library/Application\ Support/Google/Chrome/Default

The actual location can be different, by setting the --user-data-dir=path/to/directory flag.
If only one user is registered in Chrome, look in the Default/Extensions subdirectory. Otherwise, look in the <profile user name>/Extensions directory.

If that didn't help, you can always do a custom search.

  1. Go to chrome://extensions/, and find out the ID of an extension (32 lowercase letters) (if not done already, activate "Developer mode" first).

  2. Open the terminal, cd to the directory which is most likely a parent of your Chrome profile (if unsure, try ~ then /).

  3. Run find . -type d -iname "<EXTENSION ID HERE>", for example:

    find . -type d -iname jifpbeccnghkjeaalbbjmodiffmgedin

    Result:

    ./Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Extensions/jifpbeccnghkjeaalbbjmodiffmgedin

How to load json into my angular.js ng-model?

Here's a simple example of how to load JSON data into an Angular model.

I have a JSON 'GET' web service which returns a list of Customer details, from an online copy of Microsoft's Northwind SQL Server database.

http://www.iNorthwind.com/Service1.svc/getAllCustomers

It returns some JSON data which looks like this:

{
    "GetAllCustomersResult" :
        [
            {
              "CompanyName": "Alfreds Futterkiste",
              "CustomerID": "ALFKI"
            },
            {
              "CompanyName": "Ana Trujillo Emparedados y helados",
              "CustomerID": "ANATR"
            },
            {
              "CompanyName": "Antonio Moreno Taquería",
              "CustomerID": "ANTON"
            }
        ]
    }

..and I want to populate a drop down list with this data, to look like this...

Angular screenshot

I want the text of each item to come from the "CompanyName" field, and the ID to come from the "CustomerID" fields.

How would I do it ?

My Angular controller would look like this:

function MikesAngularController($scope, $http) {

    $scope.listOfCustomers = null;

    $http.get('http://www.iNorthwind.com/Service1.svc/getAllCustomers')
         .success(function (data) {
             $scope.listOfCustomers = data.GetAllCustomersResult;
         })
         .error(function (data, status, headers, config) {
             // Do some error handling here
         });
}

... which fills a "listOfCustomers" variable with this set of JSON data.

Then, in my HTML page, I'd use this:

<div ng-controller='MikesAngularController'>
    <span>Please select a customer:</span>
    <select ng-model="selectedCustomer" ng-options="customer.CustomerID as customer.CompanyName for customer in listOfCustomers" style="width:350px;"></select>
</div>

And that's it. We can now see a list of our JSON data on a web page, ready to be used.

The key to this is in the "ng-options" tag:

customer.CustomerID as customer.CompanyName for customer in listOfCustomers

It's a strange syntax to get your head around !

When the user selects an item in this list, the "$scope.selectedCustomer" variable will be set to the ID (the CustomerID field) of that Customer record.

Visual studio - getting error "Metadata file 'XYZ' could not be found" after edit continue

I had this problem for days! I tried all the stuff above, but the problem kept coming back. When this message is shown it can have the meaning of "one or more projects in your solution did not compile cleanly" thus the metadata for the file was never written. But in my case, I didn't see any of the other compiler errors!!! I kept working at trying to compile each solution manually, and only after getting VS2012 to actually reveal some compiler errors I hadn't seen previously, this problem vanished.

I fooled around with build orders, no build orders, referencing debug dlls (which were manually compiled)... NOTHING seemed to work, until I found these errors which did not show up when compiling the entire solution!!!!

Sometimes, it seems, when compiling, that the compiler will exit on some errors... I've seen this in the past where after fixing issues, subsequent compiles show NEW errors. I don't know why it happens and it's somewhat rare for me to have these issues. However, when you do have them like this, it's a real pain in trying to find out what's going on. Good Luck!

Split array into chunks

Hi try this -

 function split(arr, howMany) {
        var newArr = []; start = 0; end = howMany;
        for(var i=1; i<= Math.ceil(arr.length / howMany); i++) {
            newArr.push(arr.slice(start, end));
            start = start + howMany;
            end = end + howMany
        }
        console.log(newArr)
    }
    split([1,2,3,4,55,6,7,8,8,9],3)

Encoding as Base64 in Java

Google Guava is another choice to encode and decode Base64 data:

POM configuration:

<dependency>
   <artifactId>guava</artifactId>
   <groupId>com.google.guava</groupId>
   <type>jar</type>
   <version>14.0.1</version>
</dependency>

Sample code:

String inputContent = "Hello Vi?t Nam";
String base64String = BaseEncoding.base64().encode(inputContent.getBytes("UTF-8"));

// Decode
System.out.println("Base64:" + base64String); // SGVsbG8gVmnhu4d0IE5hbQ==
byte[] contentInBytes = BaseEncoding.base64().decode(base64String);
System.out.println("Source content: " + new String(contentInBytes, "UTF-8")); // Hello Vi?t Nam

ActionBarCompat: java.lang.IllegalStateException: You need to use a Theme.AppCompat

Just do it Build -> Clean Project. I think this will solve your problem.

What is the difference between single-quoted and double-quoted strings in PHP?

PHP strings can be specified not just in two ways, but in four ways.

  1. Single quoted strings will display things almost completely "as is." Variables and most escape sequences will not be interpreted. The exception is that to display a literal single quote, you can escape it with a back slash \', and to display a back slash, you can escape it with another backslash \\ (So yes, even single quoted strings are parsed).
  2. Double quote strings will display a host of escaped characters (including some regexes), and variables in the strings will be evaluated. An important point here is that you can use curly braces to isolate the name of the variable you want evaluated. For example let's say you have the variable $type and you want to echo "The $types are". That will look for the variable $types. To get around this use echo "The {$type}s are" You can put the left brace before or after the dollar sign. Take a look at string parsing to see how to use array variables and such.
  3. Heredoc string syntax works like double quoted strings. It starts with <<<. After this operator, an identifier is provided, then a newline. The string itself follows, and then the same identifier again to close the quotation. You don't need to escape quotes in this syntax.
  4. Nowdoc (since PHP 5.3.0) string syntax works essentially like single quoted strings. The difference is that not even single quotes or backslashes have to be escaped. A nowdoc is identified with the same <<< sequence used for heredocs, but the identifier which follows is enclosed in single quotes, e.g. <<<'EOT'. No parsing is done in nowdoc.

Notes: Single quotes inside of single quotes and double quotes inside of double quotes must be escaped:

$string = 'He said "What\'s up?"';
$string = "He said \"What's up?\"";

Speed:
I would not put too much weight on single quotes being faster than double quotes. They probably are faster in certain situations. Here's an article explaining one manner in which single and double quotes are essentially equally fast since PHP 4.3 (Useless Optimizations toward the bottom, section C). Also, this benchmarks page has a single vs double quote comparison. Most of the comparisons are the same. There is one comparison where double quotes are slower than single quotes.

How to import XML file into MySQL database table using XML_LOAD(); function

Since ID is auto increment, you can also specify ID=NULL as,

LOAD XML LOCAL INFILE '/pathtofile/file.xml' INTO TABLE my_tablename SET ID=NULL;

Send PHP variable to javascript function

Your JavaScript would have to be defined within a PHP-parsed file.

For example, in index.php you could place

<?php
$time = time();
?>
<script>
    document.write(<?php echo $time; ?>);
</script>

Link to Flask static files with url_for

You have by default the static endpoint for static files. Also Flask application has the following arguments:

static_url_path: can be used to specify a different path for the static files on the web. Defaults to the name of the static_folder folder.

static_folder: the folder with static files that should be served at static_url_path. Defaults to the 'static' folder in the root path of the application.

It means that the filename argument will take a relative path to your file in static_folder and convert it to a relative path combined with static_url_default:

url_for('static', filename='path/to/file')

will convert the file path from static_folder/path/to/file to the url path static_url_default/path/to/file.

So if you want to get files from the static/bootstrap folder you use this code:

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="{{ url_for('static', filename='bootstrap/bootstrap.min.css') }}">

Which will be converted to (using default settings):

<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="static/bootstrap/bootstrap.min.css">

Also look at url_for documentation.

Difference between $.ajax() and $.get() and $.load()

Everyone has it right. Functions .load, .get, and .post, are different ways of using the function .ajax.

Personally, I find the .ajax raw function very confusing, and prefer to use load, get, or post as I need it.

POST has the following structure:

$.post(target, post_data, function(response) { });

GET has the following:

$.get(target, post_data, function(response) { });

LOAD has the following:

$(*selector*).load(target, post_data, function(response) { });

As you can see, there are little differences between them, because its the situation that determines which one to use. Need to send the info to a file internally? Use .post (this would be most of the cases). Need to send the info in such a way that you could provide a link to the specific moment? Use .get. Both of them allow a callback where you can handle the response of the files.

An important note is that .load acts in two different manners. If you only provide the url of the target document, it will act as a get (and I say act because I tested checking for $_POST in the called PHP while using default .load behaviour and it detects $_POST, not $_GET; maybe it would be more precise to say it acts as .post without any arguments); however, as http://api.jquery.com/load/ says, once you provide an array of arguments to the function, it will POST the information to the file. Whatever the case is, .load function will directly insert the information into a DOM element, which in MANY cases is very legible, and very direct; but still provides a callback if you want to do something more with the response. Additionally, .load allows you to extract a certain block of code from a file, giving you the possibility to save a catalog, for example, in a html file, and retrieve pieces of it (items) directly into DOM elements.

Get Specific Columns Using “With()” Function in Laravel Eloquent

Try with conditions.

$id = 1;
Post::with(array('user'=>function($query) use ($id){
    $query->where('id','=',$id);
    $query->select('id','username');
}))->get();

Adding a slide effect to bootstrap dropdown

On click it can be done using below code

$('.dropdown-toggle').click(function() {
  $(this).next('.dropdown-menu').slideToggle(500);
});

If Radio Button is selected, perform validation on Checkboxes

You need to use == or === for comparison. = assigns a new value.

Besides that, using == is pointless when dealing with booleans only. Just use if(foo) instead of if(foo == true).

Move branch pointer to different commit without checkout

git branch -f <branch-name> [<new-tip-commit>]

If new-tip-commit is omitted it defaults to the current commit.

Type or namespace name does not exist

In my case there was no change in projects, it just stopped to compile and with "type or namespace name XXX does not exist" and in the complaining class itself intellisense for that XXX namespace/class works fine. The problem was in references indeed!

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Solution has ProjectA, ProjectB. ProjectA references to third party log4net and it is marked Copy local: true. ProjectB references ProjectA and does not have reference to log4net. Solution compiles fine.

  2. Change in ProjectA: reference property for log4net to Copy local: false.

  3. Clean bin and obj folders.
  4. When you compile, ProjectA compiles but ProjectB complains about not finding ProjectA namespace.

This is because ProjectB bin folder is missing third party library (log4net in my case)!

In this case solution would be -

  1. make sure that third party libraries references are set to Copy local: true or
  2. add path to such libraries in project properties under reference path.

Angular 2 Dropdown Options Default Value

just set the value of the model to the default you want like this:

selectedWorkout = 'back'

I created a fork of @Douglas' plnkr here to demonstrate the various ways to get the desired behavior in angular2.

How to get the unique ID of an object which overrides hashCode()?

System.identityHashCode(yourObject) will give the 'original' hash code of yourObject as an integer. Uniqueness isn't necessarily guaranteed. The Sun JVM implementation will give you a value which is related to the original memory address for this object, but that's an implementation detail and you shouldn't rely on it.

EDIT: Answer modified following Tom's comment below re. memory addresses and moving objects.

Is there an equivalent for var_dump (PHP) in Javascript?

You want to see the entire object (all nested levels of objects and variables inside it) in JSON form. JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation, and printing out a JSON string of your object is a good equivalent of var_dump (to get a string representation of a JavaScript object). Fortunately, JSON is very easy to use in code, and the JSON data format is also pretty human-readable.

Example:

var objectInStringFormat = JSON.stringify(someObject);
alert(objectInStringFormat);

How to use the 'main' parameter in package.json?

To answer your first question, the way you load a module is depending on the module entry point and the main parameter of the package.json.

Let's say you have the following file structure:

my-npm-module
|-- lib
|   |-- module.js
|-- package.json

Without main parameter in the package.json, you have to load the module by giving the module entry point: require('my-npm-module/lib/module.js').

If you set the package.json main parameter as follows "main": "lib/module.js", you will be able to load the module this way: require('my-npm-module').

How to change mysql to mysqli?

2020+ Answer

I've created a tool called Rector, that handles instant upgrades. There is also mysql ? mysqli set.

It handles:

  • function renaming

  • constant renaming

  • switched arguments

  • non-1:1 function calls changes, e.g.

      $data = mysql_db_name($result, $row);

    ?

      mysqli_data_seek($result, $row);
      $fetch = mysql_fetch_row($result);
      $data = $fetch[0];

How to use Rector?

1. Install it via Composer

composer require rector/rector --dev

// or in case of composer conflicts
composer require rector/rector-prefixed --dev

2. Create rector.php in project root directory with the Mysql to Mysqli set

<?php

use Rector\Core\Configuration\Option;
use Rector\Set\ValueObject\SetList;
use Symfony\Component\DependencyInjection\Loader\Configurator\ContainerConfigurator;

return static function (ContainerConfigurator $containerConfigurator): void {

    $parameters->set(Option::SETS, [
        SetList::MYSQL_TO_MYSQLI,
    ]);
};

3. Let Rector run on e.g. /src directory to only show the diffs

vendor/bin/rector process src --dry-run

4. Let Rector change the code

vendor/bin/rector process src

I've already run it on 2 big PHP projects and it works perfectly.

What is %timeit in python?

I would just like to add another useful advantage of using %timeit to answer by mu ? that:

  • You can also make use of current console variables without passing the whole code snippet as in case of timeit.timeit to built the variable that is built in an another enviroment that timeit works.

PS: I know this should be a comment to answer above but I currently don't have enough reputation for that, hope what I write will be helpful to someone and help me earn enough reputation to comment next time.

Drawing Circle with OpenGL

There is another way to draw a circle - draw it in fragment shader. Create a quad:

float right = 0.5;
float bottom = -0.5;
float left = -0.5;
float top = 0.5;
float quad[20] = {
    //x, y, z, lx, ly
    right, bottom, 0, 1.0, -1.0,
    right, top, 0, 1.0, 1.0,
    left, top, 0, -1.0, 1.0,
    left, bottom, 0, -1.0, -1.0,
};

Bind VBO:

unsigned int glBuffer;
glGenBuffers(1, &glBuffer);
glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, glBuffer);
glBufferData(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, sizeof(float)*20, quad, GL_STATIC_DRAW);

and draw:

#define BUFFER_OFFSET(i) ((char *)NULL + (i))
glEnableVertexAttribArray(ATTRIB_VERTEX);
glEnableVertexAttribArray(ATTRIB_VALUE);
glVertexAttribPointer(ATTRIB_VERTEX , 3, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 20, 0);
glVertexAttribPointer(ATTRIB_VALUE , 2, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 20, BUFFER_OFFSET(12));
glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLE_FAN, 0, 4);

Vertex shader

attribute vec2 value;
uniform mat4 viewMatrix;
uniform mat4 projectionMatrix;
varying vec2 val;
void main() {
    val = value;
    gl_Position = projectionMatrix*viewMatrix*vertex;
}

Fragment shader

varying vec2 val;
void main() {
    float R = 1.0;
    float R2 = 0.5;
    float dist = sqrt(dot(val,val));
    if (dist >= R || dist <= R2) {
        discard;
    }
    float sm = smoothstep(R,R-0.01,dist);
    float sm2 = smoothstep(R2,R2+0.01,dist);
    float alpha = sm*sm2;
    gl_FragColor = vec4(0.0, 0.0, 1.0, alpha);
}

Don't forget to enable alpha blending:

glEnable(GL_BLEND);
glBlendFunc(GL_SRC_ALPHA,GL_ONE_MINUS_SRC_ALPHA);

Remove "Using default security password" on Spring Boot

When spring boot is used we should exclude the SecurityAutoConfiguration.class both in application class and where exactly you are configuring the security like below.

Then only we can avoid the default security password.

import org.springframework.boot.SpringApplication;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.SpringBootApplication;
import org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.security.SecurityAutoConfiguration;
import org.springframework.data.jpa.repository.config.EnableJpaRepositories;
import org.springframework.security.oauth2.config.annotation.web.configuration.EnableResourceServer;

@SpringBootApplication(exclude = {SecurityAutoConfiguration.class })
@EnableJpaRepositories
@EnableResourceServer
public class Application {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        SpringApplication.run(Application.class, args);
    }
}

import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.builders.HttpSecurity;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.EnableWebSecurity;
import org.springframework.security.config.annotation.web.configuration.WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter;

    @Configuration
    @EnableWebSecurity
    @EnableAutoConfiguration(exclude = {
            org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.security.SecurityAutoConfiguration.class
        })
    public class SecurityConfiguration extends WebSecurityConfigurerAdapter {

        @Override

Using LIKE in an Oracle IN clause

I prefer this

WHERE CASE WHEN my_col LIKE '%val1%' THEN 1
           WHEN my_col LIKE '%val2%' THEN 1
           WHEN my_col LIKE '%val3%' THEN 1
           ELSE 0
           END = 1

I'm not saying it's optimal but it works and it's easily understood. Most of my queries are adhoc used once so performance is generally not an issue for me.

What is the copy-and-swap idiom?

This answer is more like an addition and a slight modification to the answers above.

In some versions of Visual Studio (and possibly other compilers) there is a bug that is really annoying and doesn't make sense. So if you declare/define your swap function like this:

friend void swap(A& first, A& second) {

    std::swap(first.size, second.size);
    std::swap(first.arr, second.arr);

}

... the compiler will yell at you when you call the swap function:

enter image description here

This has something to do with a friend function being called and this object being passed as a parameter.

A way around this is to not use friend keyword and redefine the swap function:

void swap(A& other) {

    std::swap(size, other.size);
    std::swap(arr, other.arr);

}

This time, you can just call swap and pass in other, thus making the compiler happy:

enter image description here

After all, you don't need to use a friend function to swap 2 objects. It makes just as much sense to make swap a member function that has one other object as a parameter.

You already have access to this object, so passing it in as a parameter is technically redundant.

Assignment makes pointer from integer without cast

You are returning char, and not char*, which is the pointer to the first character of an array.

If you want to return a new character array instead of doing in-place modification, you can ask for an already allocated pointer (char*) as parameter or an uninitialized pointer. In this last case you must allocate the proper number of characters for new string and remember that in C parameters as passed by value ALWAYS, so you must use char** as parameter in the case of array allocated internally by function. Of course, the caller must free that pointer later.

Switch: Multiple values in one case?

What about this?

switch (true)
{
    case (age >= 1 && age <= 8):
        MessageBox.Show("You are only " + age + " years old\n You must be kidding right.\nPlease fill in your *real* age.");
    break;
    case (age >= 9 && age <= 15):
        MessageBox.Show("You are only " + age + " years old\n That's too young!");
    break;
    case (age >= 16 && age <= 100):
        MessageBox.Show("You are " + age + " years old\n Perfect.");
    break;
    default:
        MessageBox.Show("You an old person.");
    break;
}

Controlling fps with requestAnimationFrame?

I suggest wrapping your call to requestAnimationFrame in a setTimeout:

const fps = 25;
function animate() {
  // perform some animation task here

  setTimeout(() => {
    requestAnimationFrame(animate);
  }, 1000 / fps);
}
animate();

You need to call requestAnimationFrame from within setTimeout, rather than the other way around, because requestAnimationFrame schedules your function to run right before the next repaint, and if you delay your update further using setTimeout you will have missed that time window. However, doing the reverse is sound, since you’re simply waiting a period of time before making the request.

How to get current working directory in Java?

If you want to get your current working directory then use the following line

System.out.println(new File("").getAbsolutePath());

HTTP POST Returns Error: 417 "Expectation Failed."

If you are using "HttpClient", and you don't want to use global configuration to affect all you program you can use:

 HttpClientHandler httpClientHandler = new HttpClientHandler();
 httpClient.DefaultRequestHeaders.ExpectContinue = false;

I you are using "WebClient" I think you can try to remove this header by calling:

 var client = new WebClient();
 client.Headers.Remove(HttpRequestHeader.Expect);

What’s the difference between "Array()" and "[]" while declaring a JavaScript array?

There is an important difference that no answer has mentioned yet.

From this:

new Array(2).length           // 2
new Array(2)[0] === undefined // true
new Array(2)[1] === undefined // true

You might think the new Array(2) is equivalent to [undefined, undefined], but it's NOT!

Let's try with map():

[undefined, undefined].map(e => 1)  // [1, 1]
new Array(2).map(e => 1)            // "(2) [undefined × 2]" in Chrome

See? The semantics are totally different! So why is that?

According to ES6 Spec 22.1.1.2, the job of Array(len) is just creating a new array whose property length is set to the argument len and that's it, meaning there isn't any real element inside this newly created array.

Function map(), according to spec 22.1.3.15 would firstly check HasProperty then call the callback, but it turns out that:

new Array(2).hasOwnProperty(0) // false
[undefined, undefined].hasOwnProperty(0) // true

And that's why you can not expect any iterating functions working as usual on arrays created from new Array(len).

BTW, Safari and Firefox have a much better "printing" to this situation:

// Safari
new Array(2)             // [](2)
new Array(2).map(e => 1) // [](2)
[undefined, undefined] // [undefined, undefined] (2)

// Firefox
new Array(2)             // Array [ <2 empty slots> ]
new Array(2).map(e => 1) // Array [ <2 empty slots> ]
[undefined, undefined] // Array [ undefined, undefined ]

I have already submitted an issue to Chromium and ask them to fix this confusing printing: https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=732021

UPDATE: It's already fixed. Chrome now printed as:

new Array(2)             // (2) [empty × 2]

Angular.js programmatically setting a form field to dirty

If you have access to the NgModelController (you can only get access to it from a directive) then you can call

ngModel.$setViewValue("your new view value");
// or to keep the view value the same and just change it to dirty
ngModel.$setViewValue(ngModel.$viewValue);

System.MissingMethodException: Method not found?

Have you tried turning if off and on again? Jokes aside, restarting my computer was what actually did the trick for me and isn't mentioned in any of the other answers.

Check mySQL version on Mac 10.8.5

Every time you used the mysql console, the version is shown.

 mysql -u user

Successful console login shows the following which includes the mysql server version.

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 1432
Server version: 5.5.9-log Source distribution

Type 'help;' or '\h' for help. Type '\c' to clear the current input statement.

mysql>

You can also check the mysql server version directly by executing the following command:

mysql --version

You may also check the version information from the mysql console itself using the version variables:

mysql> SHOW VARIABLES LIKE "%version%";

Output will be something like this:

+-------------------------+---------------------+
| Variable_name           | Value               |
+-------------------------+---------------------+
| innodb_version          | 1.1.5               |
| protocol_version        | 10                  |
| slave_type_conversions  |                     |

You may also use this:

mysql> select @@version;

The STATUS command display version information as well.

mysql> STATUS

You can also check the version by executing this command:

mysql -v

It's worth mentioning that if you have encountered something like this:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

you can fix it by:

sudo ln -s /Applications/MAMP/tmp/mysql/mysql.sock /tmp/mysql.sock

Twitter Bootstrap Use collapse.js on table cells [Almost Done]

Expanding on Tony's answer, and also answering Dhaval Ptl's question, to get the true accordion effect and only allow one row to be expanded at a time, an event handler for show.bs.collapse can be added like so:

$('.collapse').on('show.bs.collapse', function () {
    $('.collapse.in').collapse('hide');
});

I modified his example to do this here: http://jsfiddle.net/QLfMU/116/

How can I rollback a git repository to a specific commit?

To undo the most recent commit I do this:

First:

git log

get the very latest SHA id to undo.

git revert SHA

That will create a new commit that does the exact opposite of your commit. Then you can push this new commit to bring your app to the state it was before, and your git history will show these changes accordingly.

This is good for an immediate redo of something you just committed, which I find is more often the case for me.

As Mike metioned, you can also do this:

git revert HEAD

Javascript Get Element by Id and set the value

I think the problem is the way you call your javascript function. Your code is like so:

<input type="button" onclick="javascript: myFunc(myID)" value="button"/>

myID should be wrapped in quotes.

How to make a HTTP PUT request?

My Final Approach:

    public void PutObject(string postUrl, object payload)
        {
            var request = (HttpWebRequest)WebRequest.Create(postUrl);
            request.Method = "PUT";
            request.ContentType = "application/xml";
            if (payload !=null)
            {
                request.ContentLength = Size(payload);
                Stream dataStream = request.GetRequestStream();
                Serialize(dataStream,payload);
                dataStream.Close();
            }

            HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse();
            string returnString = response.StatusCode.ToString();
        }

public void Serialize(Stream output, object input)
            {
                var ser = new DataContractSerializer(input.GetType());
                ser.WriteObject(output, input);
            }

Elegant ways to support equivalence ("equality") in Python classes

From this answer: https://stackoverflow.com/a/30676267/541136 I have demonstrated that, while it's correct to define __ne__ in terms __eq__ - instead of

def __ne__(self, other):
    return not self.__eq__(other)

you should use:

def __ne__(self, other):
    return not self == other

How can I convert string date to NSDate?

Since Swift 3, many of the NS prefixes have been dropped.

let dateFormatter = DateFormatter()
dateFormatter.dateFormat = "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ss.SSSZ"
/* date format string rules
 * http://userguide.icu-project.org/formatparse/datetime
 */

let date = dateFormatter.date(from: dateString)

BootStrap : Uncaught TypeError: $(...).datetimepicker is not a function

You are using datetimepicker when it should be datepicker. As per the docs. Try this and it should work.

<script type="text/javascript">
  $(function () {
    $('#datetimepicker9').datepicker({
      viewMode: 'years'
    });
  });
 </script>

iOS: Modal ViewController with transparent background

The Login screen is a modal, meaning that it sits on top of the previous screen. So far we have Blurred Background, but it’s not blurring anything; it’s just a grey background.

We need to set our Modal properly.

image link target

  • First, we need to change the View Controller’s View background to Clear color. It simply means that it should be transparent. By default, that View is white.

  • Second, we need to select the Segue that leads to the Login screen, and in the Attribute Inspector, set the Presentation to Over Current Context. This option is only available with Auto Layout and Size Classes enabled.

MySQL Error 1215: Cannot add foreign key constraint

I experienced this error for a completely different reason. I used MySQL Workbench 6.3 for creating my Data Model (awesome tool). I noticed that when the column order defined in the Foreign Key constraint definition does not fit the table column sequence this error is also generated.

It took me about 4 hours of trying everything else but checking that.

Now all is working well and I can get back to coding. :-)

Is it possible to append to innerHTML without destroying descendants' event listeners?

Yes it is possible if you bind events using tag attribute onclick="sayHi()" directly in template similar like your <body onload="start()"> - this approach similar to frameworks angular/vue/react/etc. You can also use <template> to operate on 'dynamic' html like here. It is not strict unobtrusive js however it is acceptable for small projects

_x000D_
_x000D_
function start() {_x000D_
  mydiv.innerHTML += "bar";_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_

  alert("hi");_x000D_
}

<body onload="start()">_x000D_
  <div id="mydiv" style="border: solid red 2px">_x000D_

  </div>_x000D_

val() vs. text() for textarea

.val() always works with textarea elements.

.text() works sometimes and fails other times! It's not reliable (tested in Chrome 33)

What's best is that .val() works seamlessly with other form elements too (like input) whereas .text() fails.

Trim spaces from start and end of string

As @ChaosPandion mentioned, the String.prototype.trim method has been introduced into the ECMAScript 5th Edition Specification, some implementations already include this method, so the best way is to detect the native implementation and declare it only if it's not available:

if (typeof String.prototype.trim != 'function') { // detect native implementation
  String.prototype.trim = function () {
    return this.replace(/^\s+/, '').replace(/\s+$/, '');
  };
}

Then you can simply:

title = title.trim();

What is the precise meaning of "ours" and "theirs" in git?

Just to clarify -- as noted above when rebasing the sense is reversed, so if you see

<<<<<<< HEAD
        foo = 12;
=======
        foo = 22;
>>>>>>> [your commit message]

Resolve using 'mine' -> foo = 12

Resolve using 'theirs' -> foo = 22

CSS3 transition on click using pure CSS

Select top 10 records for each category

If we use SQL Server >= 2005, then we can solve the task with one select only:

declare @t table (
    Id      int ,
    Section int,
    Moment  date
);

insert into @t values
(   1   ,   1   , '2014-01-01'),
(   2   ,   1   , '2014-01-02'),
(   3   ,   1   , '2014-01-03'),
(   4   ,   1   , '2014-01-04'),
(   5   ,   1   , '2014-01-05'),

(   6   ,   2   , '2014-02-06'),
(   7   ,   2   , '2014-02-07'),
(   8   ,   2   , '2014-02-08'),

ASP.NET MVC Yes/No Radio Buttons with Strongly Bound Model MVC

Adding label tags around the radio buttons using regular HTML will fix the 'labelfor' issue as well:

<label><%= Html.RadioButton("blah", !Model.blah) %> Yes</label>
<label><%= Html.RadioButton("blah", Model.blah) %> No</label>

Clicking on the text now selects the appropriate radio button.

How to return a value from try, catch, and finally?

Here is another example that return's a boolean value using try/catch.

private boolean doSomeThing(int index){
    try {
        if(index%2==0)
            return true;
    } catch (Exception e) {
        System.out.println(e.getMessage());
    }finally {
        System.out.println("Finally!!! ;) ");
    }
    return false;
}

Visual Studio Code compile on save

I can say with the latest version of TypeScript 1.8.X and 1.0 of Visual Studio code, the technique I showed is obsolete. Simply use a tsconfig.json at the root level of your project and all works automatically for syntax checking. Then use tsc -w on the command line for watching / recompiling automatically. It will read the same tsconfig.json file for options and config of ts compile.

// tsconfig.json

{
    "compilerOptions": {
        "module": "amd",
        "target": "ES5",
        "noImplicitAny": false,
        "removeComments": true,
        "preserveConstEnums": true,
        "inlineSourceMap": true
    },
    "exclude": [ "node_modules" ]
}

Enable ASP.NET ASMX web service for HTTP POST / GET requests

Actually, I found a somewhat quirky way to do this. Add the protocol to your web.config, but inside a location element. Specify the webservice location as the path attribute, like so:

<location path="YourWebservice.asmx">
  <system.web>
    <webServices>
      <protocols>
        <add name="HttpGet"/>
        <add name="HttpPost"/>
      </protocols>
    </webServices>
  </system.web>
</location>

Why is @font-face throwing a 404 error on woff files?

How do I make a JSON object with multiple arrays?

Enclosed in {} represents an object; enclosed in [] represents an array, there can be multiple objects in the array
example object :

{
    "brand": "bwm",
    "price": 30000
}

{
    "brand": "benz",
    "price": 50000
}

example array:

[
    {
        "brand": "bwm",
        "price": 30000
    },
    {
        "brand": "benz",
        "price": 50000
    }
]

In order to use JSON more beautifully, you can go here JSON Viewer do format

Take multiple lists into dataframe

Adding to Aditya Guru's answer here. There is no need of using map. You can do it simply by:

pd.DataFrame(list(zip(lst1, lst2, lst3)))

This will set the column's names as 0,1,2. To set your own column names, you can pass the keyword argument columns to the method above.

pd.DataFrame(list(zip(lst1, lst2, lst3)),
              columns=['lst1_title','lst2_title', 'lst3_title'])

Easiest way to rotate by 90 degrees an image using OpenCV?

Update for transposition:

You should use cvTranspose() or cv::transpose() because (as you rightly pointed out) it's more efficient. Again, I recommend upgrading to OpenCV2.0 since most of the cvXXX functions just convert IplImage* structures to Mat objects (no deep copies). If you stored the image in a Mat object, Mat.t() would return the transpose.

Any rotation:

You should use cvWarpAffine by defining the rotation matrix in the general framework of the transformation matrix. I would highly recommend upgrading to OpenCV2.0 which has several features as well as a Mat class which encapsulates matrices and images. With 2.0 you can use warpAffine to the above.

What are the options for storing hierarchical data in a relational database?

This is a very partial answer to your question, but I hope still useful.

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 implements two features that are extremely useful for managing hierarchical data:

  • the HierarchyId data type.
  • common table expressions, using the with keyword.

Have a look at "Model Your Data Hierarchies With SQL Server 2008" by Kent Tegels on MSDN for starts. See also my own question: Recursive same-table query in SQL Server 2008

push multiple elements to array

Pushing multiple objects at once often depends on how are you declaring your array.

This is how I did

//declaration
productList= [] as  any;

now push records

this.productList.push(obj.lenght, obj2.lenght, items);

How to re import an updated package while in Python Interpreter?

All the answers above about reload() or imp.reload() are deprecated.

reload() is no longer a builtin function in python 3 and imp.reload() is marked deprecated (see help(imp)).

It's better to use importlib.reload() instead.

How to add class active on specific li on user click with jQuery

You specified both jQuery and Javascript in the tags so here's both approaches.

jQuery

var selector = '.nav li';

$(selector).on('click', function(){
    $(selector).removeClass('active');
    $(this).addClass('active');
});

Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/bvf9u/

Pure Javascript:

var selector, elems, makeActive;

selector = '.nav li';

elems = document.querySelectorAll(selector);

makeActive = function () {
    for (var i = 0; i < elems.length; i++)
        elems[i].classList.remove('active');

    this.classList.add('active');
};

for (var i = 0; i < elems.length; i++)
    elems[i].addEventListener('mousedown', makeActive);

Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/rn3nc/1

jQuery with event delegation:

Please note that in approach 1, the handler is directly bound to that element. If you're expecting the DOM to update and new lis to be injected, it's better to use event delegation and delegate to the next element that will remain static, in this case the .nav:

$('.nav').on('click', 'li', function(){
    $('.nav li').removeClass('active');
    $(this).addClass('active');
});

Fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/bvf9u/1/

The subtle difference is that the handler is bound to the .nav now, so when you click the li the event bubbles up the DOM to the .nav which invokes the handler if the element clicked matches your selector argument. This means new elements won't need a new handler bound to them, because it's already bound to an ancestor.

It's really quite interesting. Read more about it here: http://api.jquery.com/on/

HTTP Headers for File Downloads

You can try this force-download script. Even if you don't use it, it'll probably point you in the right direction:

<?php

$filename = $_GET['file'];

if(ini_get('zlib.output_compression'))
  ini_set('zlib.output_compression', 'Off');

// addition by Jorg Weske

How to store NULL values in datetime fields in MySQL?

I just discovered that MySQL will take null provided the default for the field is null and I write specific if statements and leave off the quotes. This works for update as well.

if(empty($odate) AND empty($ddate))
{
  $query2="UPDATE items SET odate=null, ddate=null, istatus='$istatus' WHERE id='$id' ";
};

Declaring variables in Excel Cells

I also just found out how to do this with the Excel Name Manager (Formulas > Defined Names Section > Name Manager).

You can define a variable that doesn't have to "live" within a cell and then you can use it in formulas.

How to format x-axis time scale values in Chart.js v2

You could format the dates before you add them to your array. That is how I did. I used AngularJS

//convert the date to a standard format

var dt = new Date(date);

//take only the date and month and push them to your label array

$rootScope.charts.mainChart.labels.push(dt.getDate() + "-" + (dt.getMonth() + 1));

Use this array in your chart presentation

INSERT SELECT statement in Oracle 11G

There is an another option to insert data into table ..

insert into tablename values(&column_name1,&column_name2,&column_name3);

it will open another window for inserting the data value..

Save array in mysql database

The way things like that are done is with serializing the array, which means "making a string out of it". To better understand this, have a look on this:

$array = array("my", "litte", "array", 2);

$serialized_array = serialize($array);
$unserialized_array = unserialize($serialized_array);

var_dump($serialized_array); // gives back a string, perfectly for db saving!
var_dump($unserialized_array); // gives back the array again

jQuery get input value after keypress

Just use a timeout to make your call; the timeout will be called when the event stack is finished (i.e. after the default event is called)

$("body").on('keydown', 'input[type=tel]', function (e) {
    setTimeout(() => {
        formatPhone(e)
    }, 0)
});

What is the best way to exit a function (which has no return value) in python before the function ends (e.g. a check fails)?

You could simply use

return

which does exactly the same as

return None

Your function will also return None if execution reaches the end of the function body without hitting a return statement. Returning nothing is the same as returning None in Python.

How to create a temporary directory and get the path / file name in Python

To expand on another answer, here is a fairly complete example which can cleanup the tmpdir even on exceptions:

import contextlib
import os
import shutil
import tempfile

@contextlib.contextmanager
def cd(newdir, cleanup=lambda: True):
    prevdir = os.getcwd()
    os.chdir(os.path.expanduser(newdir))
    try:
        yield
    finally:
        os.chdir(prevdir)
        cleanup()

@contextlib.contextmanager
def tempdir():
    dirpath = tempfile.mkdtemp()
    def cleanup():
        shutil.rmtree(dirpath)
    with cd(dirpath, cleanup):
        yield dirpath

def main():
    with tempdir() as dirpath:
        pass # do something here

Connection refused on docker container

You need to publish the exposed ports by using the following options:

-P (upper case) or --publish-all that will tell Docker to use random ports from your host and map them to the exposed container's ports.

-p (lower case) or --publish=[] that will tell Docker to use ports you manually set and map them to the exposed container's ports.

The second option is preferred because you already know which ports are mapped. If you use the first option then you will need to call docker inspect demo and check which random ports are being used from your host at the Ports section.

Just run the following command:

docker run -it -p 8080:8080 demo

After that your url will work.

Is it possible to force Excel recognize UTF-8 CSV files automatically?

This is an old question but I've just encountered had a similar problem and the solution may help others:

Had the same issue where writing out CSV text data to a file, then opening the resulting .csv in Excel shifts all the text into a single column. After having a read of the above answers I tried the following, which seems to sort the problem out.

Apply an encoding of UTF-8 when you create your StreamWriter. That's it.

Example:

using (StreamWriter output = new StreamWriter(outputFileName, false, Encoding.UTF8, 2 << 22)) {
   /* ... do stuff .... */
   output.Close();
}

Styling the arrow on bootstrap tooltips

For styling each directional arrows(left, right,top and bottom), we have to select each arrow using CSS attribute selector and then style them individually.

Trick: Top arrow must have border color only on top side and transparent on other 3 sides. Other directional arrows also need to be styled this way.

click here for Working Jsfiddle Link

Here is the simple CSS,

.tooltip-inner { background-color:#8447cf;}

[data-placement="top"] + .tooltip > .tooltip-arrow { border-top-color: #8447cf;}

[data-placement="right"] + .tooltip > .tooltip-arrow { border-right-color: #8447cf;}

[data-placement="bottom"] + .tooltip > .tooltip-arrow {border-bottom-color: #8447cf;}

[data-placement="left"] + .tooltip > .tooltip-arrow {border-left-color: #8447cf; }

Python one-line "for" expression

The keyword you're looking for is list comprehensions:

>>> x = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
>>> y = [2*a for a in x if a % 2 == 1]
>>> print(y)
[2, 6, 10]

Deny access to one specific folder in .htaccess

Creating index.php, index.html, index.htm is not secure. Becuse, anyone can get access on your files within specified directory by guessing files name. E.g.: http://yoursite.com/includes/file.dat So, recommended method is creating a .htaccess file to deny all visitors ;). Have fun !!

Finding the mode of a list

If you want a clear approach, useful for classroom and only using lists and dictionaries by comprehension, you can do:

def mode(my_list):
    # Form a new list with the unique elements
    unique_list = sorted(list(set(my_list)))
    # Create a comprehensive dictionary with the uniques and their count
    appearance = {a:my_list.count(a) for a in unique_list}
    # Calculate max number of appearances
    max_app = max(appearance.values())
    # Return the elements of the dictionary that appear that # of times
    return {k: v for k, v in appearance.items() if v == max_app}

What's the difference between a null pointer and a void pointer?

They are two different concepts: "void pointer" is a type (void *). "null pointer" is a pointer that has a value of zero (NULL). Example:

void *pointer = NULL;

That's a NULL void pointer.

enum to string in modern C++11 / C++14 / C++17 and future C++20

EDIT: check below for a newer version

As mentioned above, N4113 is the final solution to this matter, but we'll have to wait more than a year to see it coming out.

Meanwhile, if you want such feature, you'll need to resort to "simple" templates and some preprocessor magic.

Enumerator

template<typename T>
class Enum final
{
    const char* m_name;
    const T m_value;
    static T m_counter;

public:
    Enum(const char* str, T init = m_counter) : m_name(str), m_value(init) {m_counter = (init + 1);}

    const T value() const {return m_value;}
    const char* name() const {return m_name;}
};

template<typename T>
T Enum<T>::m_counter = 0;

#define ENUM_TYPE(x)      using Enum = Enum<x>;
#define ENUM_DECL(x,...)  x(#x,##__VA_ARGS__)
#define ENUM(...)         const Enum ENUM_DECL(__VA_ARGS__);

Usage

#include <iostream>

//the initialization order should be correct in all scenarios
namespace Level
{
    ENUM_TYPE(std::uint8)
    ENUM(OFF)
    ENUM(SEVERE)
    ENUM(WARNING)
    ENUM(INFO, 10)
    ENUM(DEBUG)
    ENUM(ALL)
}

namespace Example
{
    ENUM_TYPE(long)
    ENUM(A)
    ENUM(B)
    ENUM(C, 20)
    ENUM(D)
    ENUM(E)
    ENUM(F)
}

int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
    Level::Enum lvl = Level::WARNING;
    Example::Enum ex = Example::C;
    std::cout << lvl.value() << std::endl; //2
    std::cout << ex.value() << std::endl; //20
}

Simple explaination

Enum<T>::m_counter is set to 0 inside each namespace declaration.
(Could someone point me out where ^^this behaviour^^ is mentioned on the standard?)
The preprocessor magic automates the declaration of enumerators.

Disadvantages

  • It's not a true enum type, therefore not promotable to int
  • Cannot be used in switch cases

Alternative solution

This one sacrifices line numbering (not really) but can be used on switch cases.

#define ENUM_TYPE(x) using type = Enum<x>
#define ENUM(x)      constexpr type x{__LINE__,#x}

template<typename T>
struct Enum final
{
    const T value;
    const char* name;

    constexpr operator const T() const noexcept {return value;}
    constexpr const char* operator&() const noexcept {return name;}
};

Errata

#line 0 conflicts with -pedantic on GCC and clang.

Workaround

Either start at #line 1 and subtract 1 from __LINE__.
Or, don't use -pedantic.
And while we're at it, avoid VC++ at all costs, it has always been a joke of a compiler.

Usage

#include <iostream>

namespace Level
{
    ENUM_TYPE(short);
    #line 0
    ENUM(OFF);
    ENUM(SEVERE);
    ENUM(WARNING);
    #line 10
    ENUM(INFO);
    ENUM(DEBUG);
    ENUM(ALL);
    #line <next line number> //restore the line numbering
};

int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
    std::cout << Level::OFF << std::endl;   // 0
    std::cout << &Level::OFF << std::endl;  // OFF

    std::cout << Level::INFO << std::endl;  // 10
    std::cout << &Level::INFO << std::endl; // INFO

    switch(/* any integer or integer-convertible type */)
    {
    case Level::OFF:
        //...
        break;

    case Level::SEVERE:
        //...
        break;

    //...
    }

    return 0;
}

How to set border's thickness in percentages?

Box Sizing
set the box sizing to border box box-sizing: border-box; and set the width to 100% and a fixed width for the border then add a min-width so for a small screen the border won't overtake the whole screen

C++ printing spaces or tabs given a user input integer

Just use std::string:

std::cout << std::string( n, ' ' );

In many cases, however, depending on what comes next, is may be simpler to just add n to the parameter to an std::setw.

Location of ini/config files in linux/unix?

You should adhere your application to the XDG Base Directory Specification. Most answers here are either obsolete or wrong.

Your application should store and load data and configuration files to/from the directories pointed by the following environment variables:

  • $XDG_DATA_HOME (default: "$HOME/.local/share"): user-specific data files.
  • $XDG_CONFIG_HOME (default: "$HOME/.config"): user-specific configuration files.
  • $XDG_DATA_DIRS (default: "/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/"): precedence-ordered set of system data directories.
  • $XDG_CONFIG_DIRS (default: "/etc/xdg"): precedence-ordered set of system configuration directories.
  • $XDG_CACHE_HOME (default: "$HOME/.cache"): user-specific non-essential data files.

You should first determine if the file in question is:

  1. A configuration file ($XDG_CONFIG_HOME:$XDG_CONFIG_DIRS);
  2. A data file ($XDG_DATA_HOME:$XDG_DATA_DIRS); or
  3. A non-essential (cache) file ($XDG_CACHE_HOME).

It is recommended that your application put its files in a subdirectory of the above directories. Usually, something like $XDG_DATA_DIRS/<application>/filename or $XDG_DATA_DIRS/<vendor>/<application>/filename.

When loading, you first try to load the file from the user-specific directories ($XDG_*_HOME) and, if failed, from system directories ($XDG_*_DIRS). When saving, save to user-specific directories only (since the user probably won't have write access to system directories).

For other, more user-oriented directories, refer to the XDG User Directories Specification. It defines directories for the Desktop, downloads, documents, videos, etc.

WPF: simple TextBox data binding

Name2 is a field. WPF binds only to properties. Change it to:

public string Name2 { get; set; }

Be warned that with this minimal implementation, your TextBox won't respond to programmatic changes to Name2. So for your timer update scenario, you'll need to implement INotifyPropertyChanged:

partial class Window1 : Window, INotifyPropertyChanged
{
  public event PropertyChangedEventHandler PropertyChanged;

  protected void OnPropertyChanged(string propertyName)
  {
        PropertyChanged?.Invoke(this, new PropertyChangedEventArgs(propertyName));
  }

  private string _name2;

  public string Name2
  {
    get { return _name2; }
    set
    {
      if (value != _name2)
      {
         _name2 = value;
         OnPropertyChanged("Name2");
      }
    }
  }
}

You should consider moving this to a separate data object rather than on your Window class.
