tqdm in Jupyter Notebook prints new progress bars repeatedly

This is an alternative answer for the case where tqdm_notebook doesn't work for you.

Given the following example:

The output would look something like this (progress would show up red):

The problem is that the output to stdout and stderr are processed asynchronously and separately in terms of new lines.

If say Jupyter receives on stderr the first line and then the "processed" output on stdout. Then once it receives an output on stderr to update the progress, it wouldn't go back and update the first line as it would only update the last line. Instead it will have to write a new line.

Workaround 1, writing to stdout

One workaround would be to output both to stdout instead:

Here we can see that Jupyter doesn't seem to clear until the end of the line. We could add another workaround for that by adding spaces. Such as:

Workaround 2, set description instead

It might in general be more straight forward not to have two outputs but update the description instead, e.g.:

Conclusion

You can mostly get it to work fine with plain tqdm. But if tqdm_notebook works for you, just use that (but then you'd probably not read that far).

char *arr; above statement implies that arr is a character pointer and it can point to either one character or strings of character

& char arr[]; above statement implies that arr is strings of character and can store as many characters as possible or even one but will always count on '\0' character hence making it a string ( e.g. char arr[]= "a" is similar to char arr[]={'a','\0'} )

But when used as parameters in called function, the string passed is stored character by character in formal arguments making no difference.

There are three ways to fetch multiple rows returned by PDO statement.

The simplest one is just to iterate over PDOStatement itself:

Creating table variable in SQL server 2008 R2

@tableName Table variables are alive for duration of the script running only i.e. they are only session level objects.

To test this, open two query editor windows under sql server management studio, and create table variables with same name but different structures. You will get an idea. The @tableName object is thus temporary and used for our internal processing of data, and it doesn't contribute to the actual database structure.

There is another type of table object which can be created for temporary use. They are #tableName objects declared like similar create statement for physical tables:

Create table #test (Id int, Name varchar(50))

This table object is created and stored in temp database. Unlike the first one, this object is more useful, can store large data and takes part in transactions etc. These tables are alive till the connection is open. You have to drop the created object by following script before re-creating it.

Create the perfect JPA entity

I'll try to answer several key points: this is from long Hibernate/ persistence experience including several major applications.

Entity Class: implement Serializable?

Keys needs to implement Serializable. Stuff that's going to go in the HttpSession, or be sent over the wire by RPC/Java EE, needs to implement Serializable. Other stuff: not so much. Spend your time on what's important.

Constructors: create a constructor with all required fields of the entity?

Constructor(s) for application logic, should have only a few critical "foreign key" or "type/kind" fields which will always be known when creating the entity. The rest should be set by calling the setter methods -- that's what they're for.

Avoid putting too many fields into constructors. Constructors should be convenient, and give basic sanity to the object. Name, Type and/or Parents are all typically useful.

OTOH if application rules (today) require a Customer to have an Address, leave that to a setter. That is an example of a "weak rule". Maybe next week, you want to create a Customer object before going to the Enter Details screen? Don't trip yourself up, leave possibility for unknown, incomplete or "partially entered" data.

Constructors: also, package private default constructor?

Yes, but use 'protected' rather than package private. Subclassing stuff is a real pain when the necessary internals are not visible.

Fields/Properties

Use 'property' field access for Hibernate, and from outside the instance. Within the instance, use the fields directly. Reason: allows standard reflection, the simplest & most basic method for Hibernate, to work.

As for fields 'immutable' to the application -- Hibernate still needs to be able to load these. You could try making these methods 'private', and/or put an annotation on them, to prevent application code making unwanted access.

Note: when writing an equals() function, use getters for values on the 'other' instance! Otherwise, you'll hit uninitialized/ empty fields on proxy instances.

Protected is better for (Hibernate) performance?

Unlikely.

Equals/HashCode?

This is relevant to working with entities, before they've been saved -- which is a thorny issue. Hashing/comparing on immutable values? In most business applications, there aren't any.

A customer can change address, change the name of their business, etc etc -- not common, but it happens. Corrections also need to be possible to make, when the data was not entered correctly.

The few things that are normally kept immutable, are Parenting and perhaps Type/Kind -- normally the user recreates the record, rather than changing these. But these do not uniquely identify the entity!

So, long and short, the claimed "immutable" data isn't really. Primary Key/ ID fields are generated for the precise purpose, of providing such guaranteed stability & immutability.

You need to plan & consider your need for comparison & hashing & request-processing work phases when A) working with "changed/ bound data" from the UI if you compare/hash on "infrequently changed fields", or B) working with "unsaved data", if you compare/hash on ID.

Equals/HashCode -- if a unique Business Key is not available, use a non-transient UUID which is created when the entity is initialized

Yes, this is a good strategy when required. Be aware that UUIDs are not free, performance-wise though -- and clustering complicates things.

Equals/HashCode -- never refer to related entities

"If related entity (like a parent entity) needs to be part of the Business Key then add a non insertable, non updatable field to store the parent id (with the same name as the ManytoOne JoinColumn) and use this id in the equality check"

Sounds like good advice.

How to get length of a string using strlen function

Function strlen shows the number of character before \0 and using it for std::string may report wrong length.

strlen(str.c_str()); // It may return wrong length.

In C++, a string can contain \0 within the characters but C-style-zero-terminated strings can not but at the end. If the std::string has a \0 before the last character then strlen reports a length less than the actual length.

Try to use .length() or .size(), I prefer second one since another standard containers have it.

PHP/MySQL Insert null values

This is one example where using prepared statements really saves you some trouble.

In MySQL, in order to insert a null value, you must specify it at INSERT time or leave the field out which requires additional branching:

However, if you want to insert a value in that field, you must now branch your code to add the single quotes:

INSERT INTO table2 (f1, f2)
  VALUES ('String Value', 'String Value');

Prepared statements automatically do that for you. They know the difference between string(0) "" and null and write your query appropriately:

$stmt = $mysqli->prepare("INSERT INTO table2 (f1, f2) VALUES (?, ?)");

$field2 = null;

$stmt->execute();

It escapes your fields for you, makes sure that you don't forget to bind a parameter. There is no reason to stay with the mysql extension. Use mysqli and it's prepared statements instead. You'll save yourself a world of pain.

Default nginx client_max_body_size

You have to increase client_max_body_size in nginx.conf file. This is the basic step. But if your backend laravel then you have to do some changes in the php.ini file as well. It depends on your backend. Below I mentioned file location and condition name.

Depending on your Color Model, there are different methods to create a darker (shaded) or lighter (tinted) color:

  • RGB:

    • To shade:

    where (aR,aG,aB) = black = (0,0,0) for shading, and (aR,aG,aB) = white = (255,255,255) for tinting

  • HSV or HSB:

    • To shade: lower the Value / Brightness or increase the Saturation
    • To tint: lower the Saturation or increase the Value / Brightness
  • HSL:
    • To shade: lower the Lightness
    • To tint: increase the Lightness

There exists formulas to convert from one color model to another. As per your initial question, if you are in RGB and want to use the HSV model to shade for example, you can just convert to HSV, do the shading and convert back to RGB. Formula to convert are not trivial but can be found on the internet. Depending on your language, it might also be available as a core function :

Comparing the models

  • RGB has the advantage of being really simple to implement, but:
    • you can only shade or tint your color relatively
    • you have no idea if your color is already tinted or shaded
  • HSV or HSB is kind of complex because you need to play with two parameters to get what you want (Saturation & Value / Brightness)
  • HSL is the best from my point of view:
    • supported by CSS3 (for webapp)
    • simple and accurate:
      • 50% means an unaltered Hue
      • >50% means the Hue is lighter (tint)
      • <50% means the Hue is darker (shade)
    • given a color you can determine if it is already tinted or shaded
    • you can tint or shade a color relatively or absolutely (by just replacing the Lightness part)

This is a never ending story that reflect the limits (an myth) of "interoperability and portability over all".

What the program should return to indicate "success" should be defined by who is receiving the value (the Operating system, or the process that invoked the program) not by a language specification.

But programmers likes to write code in "portable way" and hence they invent their own model for the concept of "operating system" defining symbolic values to return.

Now, in a many-to-many scenario (where many languages serve to write programs to many system) the correspondence between the language convention for "success" and the operating system one (that no one can grant to be always the same) should be handled by the specific implementation of a library for a specific target platform.

But - unfortunatly - these concept where not that clear at the time the C language was deployed (mainly to write the UNIX kernel), and Gigagrams of books where written by saying "return 0 means success", since that was true on the OS at that time having a C compiler.

From then on, no clear standardization was ever made on how such a correspondence should be handled. C and C++ has their own definition of "return values" but no-one grant a proper OS translation (or better: no compiler documentation say anything about it). 0 means success if true for UNIX - LINUX and -for independent reasons- for Windows as well, and this cover 90% of the existing "consumer computers", that - in the most of the cases - disregard the return value (so we can discuss for decades, bu no-one will ever notice!)

Inside this scenario, before taking a decision, ask these questions: - Am I interested to communicate something to my caller about my existing? (If I just always return 0 ... there is no clue behind the all thing) - Is my caller having conventions about this communication ? (Note that a single value is not a convention: that doesn't allow any information representation)

If both of this answer are no, probably the good solution is don't write the main return statement at all. (And let the compiler to decide, in respect to the target is working to).

If no convention are in place 0=success meet the most of the situations (and using symbols may be problematic, if they introduce a convention).

If conventions are in place, ensure to use symbolic constants that are coherent with them (and ensure convention coherence, not value coherence, between platforms).

throwing exceptions out of a destructor

I currently follow the policy (that so many are saying) that classes shouldn't actively throw exceptions from their destructors but should instead provide a public "close" method to perform the operation that could fail...

...but I do believe destructors for container-type classes, like a vector, should not mask exceptions thrown from classes they contain. In this case, I actually use a "free/close" method that calls itself recursively. Yes, I said recursively. There's a method to this madness. Exception propagation relies on there being a stack: If a single exception occurs, then both the remaining destructors will still run and the pending exception will propagate once the routine returns, which is great. If multiple exceptions occur, then (depending on the compiler) either that first exception will propagate or the program will terminate, which is okay. If so many exceptions occur that the recursion overflows the stack then something is seriously wrong, and someone's going to find out about it, which is also okay. Personally, I err on the side of errors blowing up rather than being hidden, secret, and insidious.

The point is that the container remains neutral, and it's up to the contained classes to decide whether they behave or misbehave with regard to throwing exceptions from their destructors.

As you're asking for the simplest library, I feel obliged to add an approach quite different to that in Guillaume's top-voted answer. (Of the other answers, sjbotha's JDOM mention is closest to what I suggest).

I've come to think that for XML handling in Java, using the standard JDK tools is certainly not the simplest way, and that only in some circumstances (such as not being able to use 3rd party libraries, for some reason) it is the best way.

Instead, consider using a good XML library, such as XOM. Here's how to read an XML file into a nu.xom.Document object:

So, this was just a little bit simpler, as reading the file into org.w3c.dom.Document wasn't very complicated either, in the "pure JDK" approach. As examples, consider this vs. this, or this vs. this, or this post containing both XOM and W3C DOM examples.

In any case, when choosing one way or the other, it's good to be aware of both sides of the story.

As long as pip lives within the scripts folder you can run

If you don't feel like dropping and recreating the whole shebang just to reload your data, you could use MyModel.destroy_all (or delete_all) in the seed.db file to clean out a table before your MyModel.create!(...) statements load the data. Then, you can redo the db:seed operation over and over. (Obviously, this only affects the tables you've loaded data into, not the rest of them.)

Case insensitive string compare in LINQ-to-SQL

Remember that there is a difference between whether the query works and whether it works efficiently! A LINQ statement gets converted to T-SQL when the target of the statement is SQL Server, so you need to think about the T-SQL that would be produced.

Using String.Equals will most likely (I am guessing) bring back all of the rows from SQL Server and then do the comparison in .NET, because it is a .NET expression that cannot be translated into T-SQL.

In other words using an expression will increase your data access and remove your ability to make use of indexes. It will work on small tables and you won't notice the difference. On a large table it could perform very badly.

That's one of the problems that exists with LINQ; people no longer think about how the statements they write will be fulfilled.

In this case there isn't a way to do what you want without using an expression - not even in T-SQL. Therefore you may not be able to do this more efficiently. Even the T-SQL answer given above (using variables with collation) will most likely result in indexes being ignored, but if it is a big table then it is worth running the statement and looking at the execution plan to see if an index was used.

This is an informational message only. What the message is telling you is that the chromedriver executable will only accept connections from the local machine.

Most driver implementations (the Chrome driver and the IE driver for sure) create a HTTP server. The language bindings (Java, Python, Ruby, .NET, etc.) all use a JSON-over-HTTP protocol to communicate with the driver and automate the browser. Since the HTTP server is simply listening on an open port for HTTP requests generated by the language bindings, connections to the HTTP server started by the language bindings are only allowed to come from other processes on the same host. Note carefully that this limitation does not apply to connections the browser can make to outside websites; rather it simply prevents incoming connections from other websites.

Edit Crystal report file without Crystal Report software

My dad moved his office after 30 year and they need to update the address in the header of their Crystal Reports 7 (1997!) based billing system.

After buying old copies of Access 97 and Visual Studio 2003 Pro, I found out that both programs were too new - they could open the RPT files, but they saved them with an updated version that would not open in the billing system.

I ended up being able to make the changes using this life-saver program...

On the bottom right, select the "Call graph" tab. This shows an interactive call graph that correlates to performance metrics in other windows as you click the functions.

To export the graph, right click it and select "Export Graph". The exported PNG looks like this:

From that we can see that:

  • the root node is _start, which is the actual ELF entry point, and contains glibc initialization boilerplate
  • f0, f1 and f2 are called as expected from one another
  • pointed is also shown, even though we called it with a function pointer. It might not have been called if we had passed a command line argument.
  • not_called is not shown because it didn't get called in the run, because we didn't pass an extra command line argument.

The cool thing about valgrind is that it does not require any special compilation options.

Therefore, you could use it even if you don't have the source code, only the executable.

valgrind manages to do that by running your code through a lightweight "virtual machine". This also makes execution extremely slow compared to native execution.

As can be seen on the graph, timing information about each function call is also obtained, and this can be used to profile the program, which is likely the original use case of this setup, not just to see call graphs: How can I profile C++ code running on Linux?

How do you run a Python script as a service in Windows?

The simplest way is to use the: NSSM - the Non-Sucking Service Manager. Just download and unzip to a location of your choosing. It's a self-contained utility, around 300KB (much less than installing the entire pywin32 suite just for this purpose) and no "installation" is needed. The zip contains a 64-bit and a 32-bit version of the utility. Either should work well on current systems (you can use the 32-bit version to manage services on 64-bit systems).

GUI approach

1 - install the python program as a service. Open a Win prompt as admin

Call method in directive controller from other controller

This is an interesting question, and I started thinking about how I would implement something like this.

I came up with this (fiddle);

Basically, instead of trying to call a directive from a controller, I created a module to house all the popdown logic:

Practical uses for AtomicInteger

I used AtomicInteger to solve the Dining Philosopher's problem.

In my solution, AtomicInteger instances were used to represent the forks, there are two needed per philosopher. Each Philosopher is identified as an integer, 1 through 5. When a fork is used by a philosopher, the AtomicInteger holds the value of the philosopher, 1 through 5, otherwise the fork is not being used so the value of the AtomicInteger is -1.

The AtomicInteger then allows to check if a fork is free, value==-1, and set it to the owner of the fork if free, in one atomic operation. See code below.

Because the compareAndSet method does not block, it should increase throughput, more work done. As you may know, the Dining Philosophers problem is used when controlled accessed to resources is needed, i.e. forks, are needed, like a process needs resources to continue doing work.

VS2010 command prompt gives error: Cannot determine the location of the VS Common Tools folder

I was getting the same error when trying to run a publish process through powershell on my build machine.

My build machine only has the Windows SDK installed and not Visual Studio and as such it appears that I'm missing some common files and registry values that are normally present when Visual Studio is installed. After looking into vsvars32.bat a bit more carefully I noticed that it was where the "Cannot determine the location of the VS Common Tools folder" error was being reported located under the GetVSCommonToolsDir label. It appears that in this batch file that since the VS7 sub-key doesn't exist on my machine it blanks out the %VS100COMNTOOLS% environment variable and reports back the specified error.

In my case it appears that this error is happening for me because I don't have Visual Studio or some other necessary components installed on my build machine and thus the registry key doesn't exist. Perhaps your error is due to something similar such as 32-bit vs 64-bit registry or 32-bit vs 64-bit VS command prompt? Testing the line of code that is failing from the batch directly in the command prompt should give you a clue about why the registry or file path isn't being resolved properly.

Android - Handle "Enter" in an EditText

I know this is a year old, but I just discovered this works perfectly for an EditText.

How to enable mbstring from php.ini?

All XAMPP packages come with Multibyte String (php_mbstring.dll) extension installed.

If you have accidentally removed DLL file from php/ext folder, just add it back (get the copy from XAMPP zip archive - its downloadable).

If you have deleted the accompanying INI configuration line from php.ini file, add it back as well:

extension=php_mbstring.dll

Also, ensure to restart your webserver (Apache) using XAMPP control panel.

You could just return an Object as all types are descended from Object.

You can use split() to get string array from comma separated string. If you iterate and perform mathematical operation on element of string array then that element will be treated as number by run-time cast but still you have string array. To convert comma separated string int array see the edit.

I think the easiest way to think about this variable like input parameter in lambda expression in C#. I.e. $_ is similar to x in x => Console.WriteLine(x) anonymous function in C#. Consider following examples:

Why can't I duplicate a slice with `copy()`?

The copy() runs for the least length of dst and src, so you must initialize the dst to the desired length.

The above claim that "If you are planning to draw a lot of pixel, it's a lot more efficient to use the image data of the canvas to do pixel drawing" seems to be quite wrong - at least with Chrome 31.0.1650.57 m or depending on your definition of "lot of pixel". I would have preferred to comment directly to the respective post - but unfortunately I don't have enough stackoverflow points yet:

Interestingly it turns out the silly ctx.fillRect() implementation in my example is actually at least twice as fast as the ImageData based double buffering approach.

At least for my scenario it seems that the built-in ctx.getImageData/ctx.putImageData is in fact unbelievably SLOW. (It would be interesting to know the percentage of pixels that need to be touched before an ImageData based approach might take the lead..)

Conclusion: If you need to optimize performance you have to profile YOUR code and act on YOUR findings..

How to format a java.sql Timestamp for displaying?

For this particular question, the standard suggestion of java.text.SimpleDateFormat works, but has the unfortunate side effect that SimpleDateFormat is not thread-safe and can be the source of particularly nasty problems since it'll corrupt your output in multi-threaded scenarios, and you won't get any exceptions!

I would strongly recommend looking at Joda for anything like this. Why ? It's a much richer and more intuitive time/date library for Java than the current library (and the basis of the up-and-coming new standard Java date/time library, so you'll be learning a soon-to-be-standard API).

Can you use if/else conditions in CSS?

If you're open to using jquery, you can set conditional statements using javascript within the html:

To keep it basic, I used a loop and something like this to get you started (my index are datetimes):

Note, this may be less efficient for SUPER large data or very small increments as your slicing may become more strenuous (works for me well enough for hundreds of thousands of rows of data and several columns though for hourly windows across a few weeks)

   os.makedirs(mypath)

makedirs creates multiple levels of directories, if needed.

to make room for the label.

Since i gave the answer, matplotlib has added the tight_layout() function. So i suggest to use it:

plt.tight_layout()

should make room for the xlabel.

The form post values are stored under the name of the form in the request. For example, if you've overridden the getName() method of ContactType() to return "contact", you would do this:

$postData = $request->request->get('contact');
$name_value = $postData['name'];

If you're still having trouble, try doing a var_dump() on $request->request->all() to see all the post values.

Neevek's solution works better than Joel's on devices running 3.2 and above. There is a bug in Android that will cause java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: pointerIndex out of range if a gesture detector is used inside a scollview. To duplicate the issue, implement a custom scollview as Joel suggested and put a view pager inside. If you drag (don't lift you figure) to one direction (left/right) and then to the opposite, you will see the crash. Also in Joel's solution, if you drag the view pager by moving your finger diagonally, once your finger leave the view pager's content view area, the pager will spring back to its previous position. All these issues are more to do with Android's internal design or lack of it than Joel's implementation, which itself is a piece of smart and concise code.
