Should methods in a Java interface be declared with or without a public access modifier?

The reason for methods in interfaces being by default public and abstract seems quite logical and obvious to me.

A method in an interface it is by default abstract to force the implementing class to provide an implementation and is public by default so the implementing class has access to do so.

Adding those modifiers in your code is redundant and useless and can only lead to the conclusion that you lack knowledge and/or understanding of Java fundamentals.

Can we instantiate an abstract class?

No, we can't create the object of abstract class, but create the reference variable of the abstract class. The reference variable is used to refer to the objects of derived classes (Sub classes of Abstract class)

Here is the example that illustrates this concept

abstract class Figure {

    double dim1;

    double dim2;

    Figure(double a, double b) {

        dim1 = a;

        dim2 = b;

    }

    // area is now an abstract method

    abstract double area();

    }

    class Rectangle extends Figure {
        Rectangle(double a, double b) {
        super(a, b);
    }
    // override area for rectangle
    double area() {
        System.out.println("Inside Area for Rectangle.");
        return dim1 * dim2;
    }
}

class Triangle extends Figure {
    Triangle(double a, double b) {
        super(a, b);
    }
    // override area for right triangle
    double area() {
        System.out.println("Inside Area for Triangle.");
        return dim1 * dim2 / 2;
    }
}

class AbstractAreas {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
        // Figure f = new Figure(10, 10); // illegal now
        Rectangle r = new Rectangle(9, 5);
        Triangle t = new Triangle(10, 8);
        Figure figref; // this is OK, no object is created
        figref = r;
        System.out.println("Area is " + figref.area());
        figref = t;
        System.out.println("Area is " + figref.area());
    }
}

Here we see that we cannot create the object of type Figure but we can create a reference variable of type Figure. Here we created a reference variable of type Figure and Figure Class reference variable is used to refer to the objects of Class Rectangle and Triangle.

Unit Testing: DateTime.Now

We were using a static SystemTime object, but ran into problems running parallel unit tests. I attempted to use Henk van Boeijen's solution but had problems across spawned asynchronous threads, ended up using using AsyncLocal in a manner similar to this below:

public static class Clock
{
    private static Func<DateTime> _utcNow = () => DateTime.UtcNow;

    static AsyncLocal<Func<DateTime>> _override = new AsyncLocal<Func<DateTime>>();

    public static DateTime UtcNow => (_override.Value ?? _utcNow)();

    public static void Set(Func<DateTime> func)
    {
        _override.Value = func;
    }

    public static void Reset()
    {
        _override.Value = null;
    }
}

Difference between Activity and FragmentActivity

FragmentActivity is part of the support library, while Activity is the framework's default class. They are functionally equivalent.

You should always use FragmentActivity and android.support.v4.app.Fragment instead of the platform default Activity and android.app.Fragment classes. Using the platform defaults mean that you are relying on whatever implementation of fragments is used in the device you are running on. These are often multiple years old, and contain bugs that have since been fixed in the support library.

Python set to list

Your code does work (tested with cpython 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 3.1 and 3.2):

>>> a = set(["Blah", "Hello"])
>>> a = list(a) # You probably wrote a = list(a()) here or list = set() above
>>> a
['Blah', 'Hello']

Check that you didn't overwrite list by accident:

>>> assert list == __builtins__.list

Structuring online documentation for a REST API

That's a very complex question for a simple answer.

You may want to take a look at existing API frameworks, like Swagger Specification (OpenAPI), and services like apiary.io and apiblueprint.org.

Also, here's an example of the same REST API described, organized and even styled in three different ways. It may be a good start for you to learn from existing common ways.

At the very top level I think quality REST API docs require at least the following:

  • a list of all your API endpoints (base/relative URLs)
  • corresponding HTTP GET/POST/... method type for each endpoint
  • request/response MIME-type (how to encode params and parse replies)
  • a sample request/response, including HTTP headers
  • type and format specified for all params, including those in the URL, body and headers
  • a brief text description and important notes
  • a short code snippet showing the use of the endpoint in popular web programming languages

Also there are a lot of JSON/XML-based doc frameworks which can parse your API definition or schema and generate a convenient set of docs for you. But the choice for a doc generation system depends on your project, language, development environment and many other things.

warning about too many open figures

The following snippet solved the issue for me:

class FigureWrapper(object):
    '''Frees underlying figure when it goes out of scope.
    '''

    def __init__(self, figure):
        self._figure = figure

    def __del__(self):
        plt.close(self._figure)
        print("Figure removed")

# .....
    f, ax = plt.subplots(1, figsize=(20, 20))
    _wrapped_figure = FigureWrapper(f)

    ax.plot(...
    plt.savefig(...
# .....

When _wrapped_figure goes out of scope the runtime calls our __del__() method with plt.close() inside. It happens even if exception fires after _wrapped_figure constructor.

How can I get the Windows last reboot reason

Take a look at the Event Log API. Case a) (bluescreen, user cut the power cord or system hang) causes a note ('system did not shutdown correctly' or something like that) to be left in the 'System' event log the next time the system is rebooted properly. You should be able to access it programmatically using the above API (honestly, I've never used it but it should work).

LEFT OUTER JOIN in LINQ

This is the general form (as already provided in other answers)

var c =
    from a in alpha
    join b in beta on b.field1 equals a.field1 into b_temp
    from b_value in b_temp.DefaultIfEmpty()
    select new { Alpha = a, Beta = b_value };

However here's an explanation that I hope will clarify what this actually means!

join b in beta on b.field1 equals a.field1 into b_temp

essentially creates a separate result set b_temp that effectively includes null 'rows' for entries on the right hand side (entries in 'b').

Then the next line:

from b_value in b_temp.DefaultIfEmpty()

..iterates over that result set, setting the default null value for the 'row' on the right hand side, and setting the result of the right hand side row join to the value of 'b_value' (i.e. the value that's on the right hand side,if there's a matching record, or 'null' if there isn't).

Now, if the right hand side is the result of a separate LINQ query, it will consist of anonymous types, which can only either be 'something' or 'null'. If it's an enumerable however (e.g. a List - where MyObjectB is a class with 2 fields), then it's possible to be specific about what default 'null' values are used for its properties:

var c =
    from a in alpha
    join b in beta on b.field1 equals a.field1 into b_temp
    from b_value in b_temp.DefaultIfEmpty( new MyObjectB { Field1 = String.Empty, Field2 = (DateTime?) null })
    select new { Alpha = a, Beta_field1 = b_value.Field1, Beta_field2 = b_value.Field2 };

This ensures that 'b' itself isn't null (but its properties can be null, using the default null values that you've specified), and this allows you to check properties of b_value without getting a null reference exception for b_value. Note that for a nullable DateTime, a type of (DateTime?) i.e. 'nullable DateTime' must be specified as the 'Type' of the null in the specification for the 'DefaultIfEmpty' (this will also apply to types that are not 'natively' nullable e.g double, float).

You can perform multiple left outer joins by simply chaining the above syntax.

Replace duplicate spaces with a single space in T-SQL

This would work:

declare @test varchar(100)
set @test = 'this   is  a    test'

while charindex('  ',@test  ) > 0
begin
   set @test = replace(@test, '  ', ' ')
end

select @test

INNER JOIN vs LEFT JOIN performance in SQL Server

A LEFT JOIN is absolutely not faster than an INNER JOIN. In fact, it's slower; by definition, an outer join (LEFT JOIN or RIGHT JOIN) has to do all the work of an INNER JOIN plus the extra work of null-extending the results. It would also be expected to return more rows, further increasing the total execution time simply due to the larger size of the result set.

(And even if a LEFT JOIN were faster in specific situations due to some difficult-to-imagine confluence of factors, it is not functionally equivalent to an INNER JOIN, so you cannot simply go replacing all instances of one with the other!)

Most likely your performance problems lie elsewhere, such as not having a candidate key or foreign key indexed properly. 9 tables is quite a lot to be joining so the slowdown could literally be almost anywhere. If you post your schema, we might be able to provide more details.

Edit:

Reflecting further on this, I could think of one circumstance under which a LEFT JOIN might be faster than an INNER JOIN, and that is when:

  • Some of the tables are very small (say, under 10 rows);
  • The tables do not have sufficient indexes to cover the query.

Consider this example:

CREATE TABLE #Test1
(
    ID int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
    Name varchar(50) NOT NULL
)
INSERT #Test1 (ID, Name) VALUES (1, 'One')
INSERT #Test1 (ID, Name) VALUES (2, 'Two')
INSERT #Test1 (ID, Name) VALUES (3, 'Three')
INSERT #Test1 (ID, Name) VALUES (4, 'Four')
INSERT #Test1 (ID, Name) VALUES (5, 'Five')

CREATE TABLE #Test2
(
    ID int NOT NULL PRIMARY KEY,
    Name varchar(50) NOT NULL
)
INSERT #Test2 (ID, Name) VALUES (1, 'One')
INSERT #Test2 (ID, Name) VALUES (2, 'Two')
INSERT #Test2 (ID, Name) VALUES (3, 'Three')
INSERT #Test2 (ID, Name) VALUES (4, 'Four')
INSERT #Test2 (ID, Name) VALUES (5, 'Five')

SELECT *
FROM #Test1 t1
INNER JOIN #Test2 t2
ON t2.Name = t1.Name

SELECT *
FROM #Test1 t1
LEFT JOIN #Test2 t2
ON t2.Name = t1.Name

DROP TABLE #Test1
DROP TABLE #Test2

If you run this and view the execution plan, you'll see that the INNER JOIN query does indeed cost more than the LEFT JOIN, because it satisfies the two criteria above. It's because SQL Server wants to do a hash match for the INNER JOIN, but does nested loops for the LEFT JOIN; the former is normally much faster, but since the number of rows is so tiny and there's no index to use, the hashing operation turns out to be the most expensive part of the query.

You can see the same effect by writing a program in your favourite programming language to perform a large number of lookups on a list with 5 elements, vs. a hash table with 5 elements. Because of the size, the hash table version is actually slower. But increase it to 50 elements, or 5000 elements, and the list version slows to a crawl, because it's O(N) vs. O(1) for the hashtable.

But change this query to be on the ID column instead of Name and you'll see a very different story. In that case, it does nested loops for both queries, but the INNER JOIN version is able to replace one of the clustered index scans with a seek - meaning that this will literally be an order of magnitude faster with a large number of rows.

So the conclusion is more or less what I mentioned several paragraphs above; this is almost certainly an indexing or index coverage problem, possibly combined with one or more very small tables. Those are the only circumstances under which SQL Server might sometimes choose a worse execution plan for an INNER JOIN than a LEFT JOIN.

How to enumerate an object's properties in Python?

I think it's worth showing the difference between the various options mentioned - often a picture is worth a thousand words.

To summarize:

  • vars() and __dict__ only return instance-local properties;
  • dir() returns everything, but only as a list of string member names; dynamic properties are not called;
  • inspect.getmembers() returns everything, as a list of tuples (name, value); it actually runs dynamic properties, and accepts an optional predicate argument that can filter out members by value.

So my common-sense approach is typically to use dir() on the command line, and getmembers() in programs, unless specific performance considerations apply.

Note that, to keep things cleaner, I did not include __slots__ - if present, it was explicitly put there to be queried, and should be used directly. I also did not cover metaclasses, which can get a bit hairy (most people will never use them anyway).

Algorithm for solving Sudoku

Using google ortools - the following will either generate a dummy sudoku array or will solve a candidate. The code is probably more verbose than required, any feedback is appreciated.

The idea is to solve a constraint-programming problem that involves

  1. List of 81 variables with integer bounds between 1 and 9.
  2. All different constraint for row vector
  3. All different constraint for column vector
  4. All different constraint for the sub-matrices

In addition, when trying to solve existing sudoku, we add additional constraints on variables that already have assigned value.

from ortools.constraint_solver import pywrapcp
import numpy as np

def sudoku_solver(candidate = None):
    solver = pywrapcp.Solver("Sudoku")

    variables = [solver.IntVar(1,9,f"x{i}") for i in range(81)]
    if len(candidate)>0:
        candidate = np.int64(candidate)
        for i in range(81):
            val = candidate[i]
            if val !=0:
                solver.Add(variables[i] == int(val))

    def set_constraints():
        for i in range(9):
            # All columns should be different
            q=[variables[j] for j in list(range(i,81,9))]
            solver.Add(solver.AllDifferent(q))

            #All rows should be different
            q2=[variables[j] for j in list(range(i*9,(i+1)*9))]
            solver.Add(solver.AllDifferent(q2))

            #All values in the sub-matrix should be different
            a = list(range(81))
            sub_blocks = a[3*i:3*(i+9):9] + a[3*i+1:3*(i+9)+1:9] + a[3*i+2:3*(i+9)+2:9]
            q3 = [variables[j] for j in sub_blocks]
            solver.Add(solver.AllDifferent(q3))

    set_constraints()
    db = solver.Phase(variables, solver.CHOOSE_FIRST_UNBOUND, solver.ASSIGN_MIN_VALUE)
    solver.NewSearch(db)

    results_store =[]
    num_solutions =0
    total_solutions = 5
    while solver.NextSolution() and num_solutions<total_solutions:
        results = [j.Value() for j in variables]
        results_store.append(results)
        num_solutions +=1

    return results_store

Solve the following sudoku

candidate = np.array([0, 2, 0, 4, 5, 6, 0, 8, 0, 0, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0, 0, 3, 7, 0, 9, 0,

javascript date + 7 days

Two problems here:

  1. seven_date is a number, not a date. 29 + 7 = 36
  2. getMonth returns a zero based index of the month. So adding one just gets you the current month number.

How do I bind onchange event of a TextBox using JQuery?

You must change the event name from "change" to "onchange":

$(document).ready(function(){
        $("input#tags").bind("onchange", autoFill);
          });

or use the shortcut binder method change:

$(document).ready(function(){
        $("input#tags").change(autoFill);
          });

Note that the onchange event usually fires when the user leave the input, so for auto-complete you better use the keydown event.

How to make gradient background in android

Visual examples help with this kind of question.

Boilerplate

In order to create a gradient, you create an xml file in res/drawable. I am calling mine my_gradient_drawable.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <gradient
        android:type="linear"
        android:angle="0"
        android:startColor="#f6ee19"
        android:endColor="#115ede" />
</shape>

You set it to the background of some view. For example:

<View
    android:layout_width="200dp"
    android:layout_height="100dp"
    android:background="@drawable/my_gradient_drawable"/>

type="linear"

Set the angle for a linear type. It must be a multiple of 45 degrees.

<gradient
    android:type="linear"
    android:angle="0"
    android:startColor="#f6ee19"
    android:endColor="#115ede" />

enter image description here

type="radial"

Set the gradientRadius for a radial type. Using %p means it is a percentage of the smallest dimension of the parent.

<gradient
    android:type="radial"
    android:gradientRadius="10%p"
    android:startColor="#f6ee19"
    android:endColor="#115ede" />

enter image description here

type="sweep"

I don't know why anyone would use a sweep, but I am including it for completeness. I couldn't figure out how to change the angle, so I am only including one image.

<gradient
    android:type="sweep"
    android:startColor="#f6ee19"
    android:endColor="#115ede" />

enter image description here

center

You can also change the center of the sweep or radial types. The values are fractions of the width and height. You can also use %p notation.

android:centerX="0.2"
android:centerY="0.7"

"Could not get any response" response when using postman with subdomain

We got this confusing error when a user accidentally copy/pasted a leading space character in an environment variable used to build the URL:

Example:

The request's URL was set to: http://{URL}/blah

The {URL} environment variable had a value of " hostname" (**notice the leading space character**)

This caused Postman to try to access http:// hostname/blah which gave this error message.

How do you plot bar charts in gnuplot?

You can directly use the style histograms provide by gnuplot. This is an example if you have two file in output:

set style data histograms
 set style fill solid
 set boxwidth 0.5
 plot "file1.dat" using 5 title "Total1" lt rgb "#406090",\
      "file2.dat" using 5 title "Total2" lt rgb "#40FF00"

syntax error: unexpected token <

Removing this line from my code solved my problem.

header("Content-Type: application/json; charset=UTF-8");

Add all files to a commit except a single file?

Now git supports exclude certain paths and files by pathspec magic :(exclude) and its short form :!. So you can easily achieve it as the following command.

git add --all -- :!main/dontcheckmein.txt
git add -- . :!main/dontcheckmein.txt

Actually you can specify more:

git add --all -- :!path/to/file1 :!path/to/file2 :!path/to/folder1/*
git add -- . :!path/to/file1 :!path/to/file2 :!path/to/folder1/*

For Mac and Linux, surround each file/folder path with quotes

git add --all -- ':!path/to/file1' ':!path/to/file2' ':!path/to/folder1/*'

Relation between CommonJS, AMD and RequireJS?

RequireJS implements the AMD API (source).

CommonJS is a way of defining modules with the help of an exports object, that defines the module contents. Simply put, a CommonJS implementation might work like this:

// someModule.js
exports.doSomething = function() { return "foo"; };

//otherModule.js
var someModule = require('someModule'); // in the vein of node
exports.doSomethingElse = function() { return someModule.doSomething() + "bar"; };

Basically, CommonJS specifies that you need to have a require() function to fetch dependencies, an exports variable to export module contents and a module identifier (which describes the location of the module in question in relation to this module) that is used to require the dependencies (source). CommonJS has various implementations, including Node.js, which you mentioned.

CommonJS was not particularly designed with browsers in mind, so it doesn't fit in the browser environment very well (I really have no source for this--it just says so everywhere, including the RequireJS site.) Apparently, this has something to do with asynchronous loading, etc.

On the other hand, RequireJS implements AMD, which is designed to suit the browser environment (source). Apparently, AMD started as a spinoff of the CommonJS Transport format and evolved into its own module definition API. Hence the similarities between the two. The new feature in AMD is the define() function that allows the module to declare its dependencies before being loaded. For example, the definition could be:

define('module/id/string', ['module', 'dependency', 'array'],
function(module, factory function) {
  return ModuleContents;
});

So, CommonJS and AMD are JavaScript module definition APIs that have different implementations, but both come from the same origins.

  • AMD is more suited for the browser, because it supports asynchronous loading of module dependencies.
  • RequireJS is an implementation of AMD, while at the same time trying to keep the spirit of CommonJS (mainly in the module identifiers).

To confuse you even more, RequireJS, while being an AMD implementation, offers a CommonJS wrapper so CommonJS modules can almost directly be imported for use with RequireJS.

define(function(require, exports, module) {
  var someModule = require('someModule'); // in the vein of node
  exports.doSomethingElse = function() { return someModule.doSomething() + "bar"; };
});

I hope this helps to clarify things!

When to use setAttribute vs .attribute= in JavaScript?

None of the previous answers are complete and most contain misinformation.

There are three ways of accessing the attributes of a DOM Element in JavaScript. All three work reliably in modern browsers as long as you understand how to utilize them.

1. element.attributes

Elements have a property attributes that returns a live NamedNodeMap of Attr objects. The indexes of this collection may be different among browsers. So, the order is not guaranteed. NamedNodeMap has methods for adding and removing attributes (getNamedItem and setNamedItem, respectively).

Notice that though XML is explicitly case sensitive, the DOM spec calls for string names to be normalized, so names passed to getNamedItem are effectively case insensitive.

Example Usage:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var div = document.getElementsByTagName('div')[0];_x000D_
_x000D_
//you can look up specific attributes_x000D_
var classAttr = div.attributes.getNamedItem('CLASS');_x000D_
document.write('attributes.getNamedItem() Name: ' + classAttr.name + ' Value: ' + classAttr.value + '<br>');_x000D_
_x000D_
//you can enumerate all defined attributes_x000D_
for(var i = 0; i < div.attributes.length; i++) {_x000D_
  var attr = div.attributes[i];_x000D_
  document.write('attributes[] Name: ' + attr.name + ' Value: ' + attr.value + '<br>');_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
//create custom attribute_x000D_
var customAttr = document.createAttribute('customTest');_x000D_
customAttr.value = '567';_x000D_
div.attributes.setNamedItem(customAttr);_x000D_
_x000D_
//retreive custom attribute_x000D_
customAttr = div.attributes.getNamedItem('customTest');_x000D_
document.write('attributes.getNamedItem() Name: ' + customAttr.name + ' Value: ' + customAttr.value + '<br>');
_x000D_
<div class="class1" id="main" data-test="stuff" nonStandard="1234"></div>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

2. element.getAttribute & element.setAttribute

These methods exist directly on the Element without needing to access attributes and its methods but perform the same functions.

Again, notice that string name are case insensitive.

Example Usage:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var div = document.getElementsByTagName('div')[0];_x000D_
_x000D_
//get specific attributes_x000D_
document.write('Name: class Value: ' + div.getAttribute('class') + '<br>');_x000D_
document.write('Name: ID Value: ' + div.getAttribute('ID') + '<br>');_x000D_
document.write('Name: DATA-TEST Value: ' + div.getAttribute('DATA-TEST') + '<br>');_x000D_
document.write('Name: nonStandard Value: ' + div.getAttribute('nonStandard') + '<br>');_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_
//create custom attribute_x000D_
div.setAttribute('customTest', '567');_x000D_
_x000D_
//retreive custom attribute_x000D_
document.write('Name: customTest Value: ' + div.getAttribute('customTest') + '<br>');
_x000D_
<div class="class1" id="main" data-test="stuff" nonStandard="1234"></div>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

3. Properties on the DOM object, such as element.id

Many attributes can be accessed using convenient properties on the DOM object. Which attributes exist depends on the DOM node's type, not which attributes are defined in the HTML. The properties are defined somewhere in the prototype chain of DOM object in question. The specific properties defined will depend on the type of Element you are accessing. For example, className and id are defined on Element and exist on all DOM nodes that are elements (ie. not text or comment nodes). But value is more narrow. It's defined on HTMLInputElement and may not exist on other elements.

Notice that JavaScript properties are case sensitive. Although most properties will use lowercase, some are camelCase. So always check the spec to be sure.

This "chart" captures a portion of the prototype chain for these DOM objects. It's not even close to complete, but it captures the overall structure.

                      ____________Node___________
                      |               |         |
                   Element           Text   Comment
                   |     |
           HTMLElement   SVGElement
           |         |
HTMLInputElement   HTMLSpanElement

Example Usage:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var div = document.getElementsByTagName('div')[0];_x000D_
_x000D_
//get specific attributes_x000D_
document.write('Name: class Value: ' + div.className + '<br>');_x000D_
document.write('Name: id Value: ' + div.id + '<br>');_x000D_
document.write('Name: ID Value: ' + div.ID + '<br>'); //undefined_x000D_
document.write('Name: data-test Value: ' + div.dataset.test + '<br>'); //.dataset is a special case_x000D_
document.write('Name: nonStandard Value: ' + div.nonStandard + '<br>'); //undefined
_x000D_
<div class="class1" id="main" data-test="stuff" nonStandard="1234"></div>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Caveat: This is an explanation of how the HTML spec defines and modern browsers handle attributes. I did not attempt to deal with limitations of ancient, broken browsers. If you need to support old browsers, in addition to this information, you will need to know what is broken in the those browsers.

Import multiple csv files into pandas and concatenate into one DataFrame

Almost all of the answers here are either unnecessarily complex (glob pattern matching) or rely on additional 3rd party libraries. You can do this in 2 lines using everything Pandas and python (all versions) already have built in.

For a few files - 1 liner:

df = pd.concat(map(pd.read_csv, ['data/d1.csv', 'data/d2.csv','data/d3.csv']))

For many files:

from os import listdir

filepaths = [f for f in listdir("./data") if f.endswith('.csv')]
df = pd.concat(map(pd.read_csv, filepaths))

This pandas line which sets the df utilizes 3 things:

  1. Python's map (function, iterable) sends to the function (the pd.read_csv()) the iterable (our list) which is every csv element in filepaths).
  2. Panda's read_csv() function reads in each CSV file as normal.
  3. Panda's concat() brings all these under one df variable.

Changing the "tick frequency" on x or y axis in matplotlib?

Another approach is to set the axis locator:

import matplotlib.ticker as plticker

loc = plticker.MultipleLocator(base=1.0) # this locator puts ticks at regular intervals
ax.xaxis.set_major_locator(loc)

There are several different types of locator depending upon your needs.

Here is a full example:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.ticker as plticker

x = [0,5,9,10,15]
y = [0,1,2,3,4]
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.plot(x,y)
loc = plticker.MultipleLocator(base=1.0) # this locator puts ticks at regular intervals
ax.xaxis.set_major_locator(loc)
plt.show()

                addMessage("enterValidEmail", "email.AddressInvalidLocalPart");
            }
        }

        return result;
    }

    private void addMessage(String detail, String summary) {
        String detailMsg = bundle.getString(detail);
        String summaryMsg = bundle.getString(summary);
        messages.add(new FacesMessage(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_ERROR, summaryMsg, detailMsg));
    }

        //domain = (domainOption == null) ? true : domainOption.booleanValue();
    }
}

With a hostname validator as follows:

@FacesValidator("hostNameValidator")
public class HostnameValidator implements Validator {

    private Locale locale;
    private ResourceBundle bundle;
    private List<FacesMessage> messages;
    private boolean checkTld = true;

    private String tld;

Use mysql_fetch_array() with foreach() instead of while()

You could just do it like this

$query_select = "SELECT * FROM shouts ORDER BY id DESC LIMIT 8;";

$result_select = mysql_query($query_select) or die(mysql_error());

 foreach($result_select as $row){
    $ename = stripslashes($row['name']);
    $eemail = stripcslashes($row['email']);
    $epost = stripslashes($row['post']);
    $eid = $row['id'];

    $grav_url = "http://www.gravatar.com/avatar.php?gravatar_id=".md5(strtolower($eemail))."&size=70";

    echo ('<img src = "' . $grav_url . '" alt="Gravatar">'.'<br/>');

    echo $eid . '<br/>';

    echo $ename . '<br/>';

    echo $eemail . '<br/>';

    echo $epost . '<br/><br/><br/><br/>';
 }

What does "hashable" mean in Python?

In Python, any immutable object (such as an integer, boolean, string, tuple) is hashable, meaning its value does not change during its lifetime. This allows Python to create a unique hash value to identify it, which can be used by dictionaries to track unique keys and sets to track unique values.

This is why Python requires us to use immutable datatypes for the keys in a dictionary.

Creating instance list of different objects

You could create a list of Object like List<Object> list = new ArrayList<Object>(). As all classes implementation extends implicit or explicit from java.lang.Object class, this list can hold any object, including instances of Employee, Integer, String etc.

When you retrieve an element from this list, you will be retrieving an Object and no longer an Employee, meaning you need to perform a explicit cast in this case as follows:

List<Object> list = new ArrayList<Object>();
list.add("String");
list.add(Integer.valueOf(1));
list.add(new Employee());

Object retrievedObject = list.get(2);
Employee employee = (Employee)list.get(2); // explicit cast

REST API - why use PUT DELETE POST GET?

Good Semantics is important in programming.

Utilizing more methods besides GET/POST will be helpful because it will increase the readability of your code and make it easier to maintain.

Why?

Because you know GET will retrieve data from your api. You know POST will add new data to your system. You know PUT will make updates. DELETE will delete rows etc, etc,

I normally structure my RESTFUL Web Services so that I have a function callback named the same thing as the method.

I use PHP, so I use function_exists (I think its called). If the function doesn't exist, I throw a 405 (METHOD NOT ALLOWED).

How to stop an animation (cancel() does not work)

On Android 4.4.4, it seems the only way I could stop an alpha fading animation on a View was calling View.animate().cancel() (i.e., calling .cancel() on the View's ViewPropertyAnimator).

Here's the code I'm using for compatibility before and after ICS:

public void stopAnimation(View v) {
    v.clearAnimation();
    if (canCancelAnimation()) {
        v.animate().cancel();
    }
}

... with the method:

/**
 * Returns true if the API level supports canceling existing animations via the
 * ViewPropertyAnimator, and false if it does not
 * @return true if the API level supports canceling existing animations via the
 * ViewPropertyAnimator, and false if it does not
 */
public static boolean canCancelAnimation() {
    return Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.ICE_CREAM_SANDWICH;
}

Here's the animation that I'm stopping:

v.setAlpha(0f);
v.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
// Animate the content view to 100% opacity, and clear any animation listener set on the view.
v.animate()
    .alpha(1f)
    .setDuration(animationDuration)
    .setListener(null);

What should main() return in C and C++?

What to return depends on what you want to do with the executable. For example if you are using your program with a command line shell, then you need to return 0 for a success and a non zero for failure. Then you would be able to use the program in shells with conditional processing depending on the outcome of your code. Also you can assign any nonzero value as per your interpretation, for example for critical errors different program exit points could terminate a program with different exit values , and which is available to the calling shell which can decide what to do by inspecting the value returned. If the code is not intended for use with shells and the returned value does not bother anybody then it might be omitted. I personally use the signature int main (void) { .. return 0; .. }

How to get the latest file in a folder?

A much faster method on windows (0.05s), call a bat script that does this:

get_latest.bat

@echo off
for /f %%i in ('dir \\directory\in\question /b/a-d/od/t:c') do set LAST=%%i
%LAST%

where \\directory\in\question is the directory you want to investigate.

get_latest.py

from subprocess import Popen, PIPE
p = Popen("get_latest.bat", shell=True, stdout=PIPE,)
stdout, stderr = p.communicate()
print(stdout, stderr)

if it finds a file stdout is the path and stderr is None.

Use stdout.decode("utf-8").rstrip() to get the usable string representation of the file name.

Hiding a button in Javascript

visibility=hidden

is very useful, but it will still take up space on the page. You can also use

display=none

because that will not only hide the object, but make it so that it doesn't take up space until it is displayed. (Also keep in mind that display's opposite is "block," not "visible")

require(vendor/autoload.php): failed to open stream

What you're missing is running composer install, which will import your packages and create the vendor folder, along with the autoload script.

Make sure your relative path is correct. For example the example scripts in PHPMailer are in examples/, below the project root, so the correct relative path to load the composer autoloader from there would be ../vendor/autoload.php.

The autoload.php you found in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\vendor\autoload.php is probably a global composer installation – where you'll usually put things like phpcs, phpunit, phpmd etc.

composer update is not the same thing, and probably not what you want to use. If your code is tested with your current package versions then running update may cause breakages which may require further work and testing, so don't run update unless you have a specific reason to and understand exactly what it means. To clarify further – you should probably only ever run composer update locally, never on your server as it is reasonably likely to break apps in production.

I often see complaints that people can't use composer because they can't run it on their server (e.g. because it's shared and they have no shell access). In that case, you can still use composer: run it locally (an environment that has no such restrictions), and upload the local vendor folder it generates along with all your other PHP scripts.

Running composer update also performs a composer install, and if you do not currently have a vendor folder (normal if you have a fresh checkout of a project), then it will create one, and also overwrite any composer.lock file you already have, updating package versions tagged in it, and this is what is potentially dangerous.

Similarly, if you do not currently have a composer.lock file (e.g. if it was not committed to the project), then composer install also effectively performs a composer update. It's thus vital to understand the difference between the two as they are definitely not interchangeable.

It is also possible to update a single package by naming it, for example:

composer update ramsey/uuid

This will re-resolve the version specified in your composer.json and install it in your vendor folder, and update your composer.lock file to match. This is far less likely to cause problems than a general composer update if you just need a specific update to one package.

It is normal for libraries to not include a composer.lock file of their own; it's up to apps to fix versions, not the libraries they use. As a result, library developers are expected to maintain compatibility with a wider range of host environments than app developers need to. For example, a library might be compatible with Laravel 5, 6, 7, and 8, but an app using it might require Laravel 8 for other reasons.

Composer 2.0 (out soon) should remove any remaining inconsistencies between install and update results.

Where to put the gradle.properties file

Actually there are 3 places where gradle.properties can be placed:

  1. Under gradle user home directory defined by the GRADLE_USER_HOME environment variable, which if not set defaults to USER_HOME/.gradle
  2. The sub-project directory (myProject2 in your case)
  3. The root project directory (under myProject)

Gradle looks for gradle.properties in all these places while giving precedence to properties definition based on the order above. So for example, for a property defined in gradle user home directory (#1) and the sub-project (#2) its value will be taken from gradle user home directory (#1).

You can find more details about it in gradle documentation here.

Removing array item by value

It can be accomplished with a simple one-liner.

Having this array:

$arr = array('nice_item', 'remove_me', 'another_liked_item', 'remove_me_also');

You can do:

$arr = array_diff($arr, array('remove_me', 'remove_me_also'));

And the value of $arr will be:

array('nice_item', 'another_liked_item')

Rename file with Git

Do a git status to find out if your file is actually in your index or the commit.

It is easy as a beginner to misunderstand the index/staging area.

I view it as a 'progress pinboard'. I therefore have to add the file to the pinboard before I can commit it (i.e. a copy of the complete pinboard), I have to update the pinboard when required, and I also have to deliberately remove files from it when I've finished with them - simply creating, editing or deleting a file doesn't affect the pinboard. It's like 'storyboarding'.

Edit: As others noted, You should do the edits locally and then push the updated repo, rather than attempt to edit directly on github.

Strip first and last character from C string

To "remove" the 1st character point to the second character:

char mystr[] = "Nmy stringP";
char *p = mystr;
p++; /* 'N' is not in `p` */

To remove the last character replace it with a '\0'.

p[strlen(p)-1] = 0; /* 'P' is not in `p` (and it isn't in `mystr` either) */

Jquery Smooth Scroll To DIV - Using ID value from Link

Here is my solution:

<!-- jquery smooth scroll to id's -->
<script>
$(function() {
  $('a[href*=\\#]:not([href=\\#])').click(function() {
    if (location.pathname.replace(/^\//,'') == this.pathname.replace(/^\//,'') && location.hostname == this.hostname) {
      var target = $(this.hash);
      target = target.length ? target : $('[name=' + this.hash.slice(1) +']');
      if (target.length) {
        $('html,body').animate({
          scrollTop: target.offset().top
        }, 500);
        return false;
      }
    }
  });
});
</script>

With just this snippet you can use an unlimited number of hash-links and corresponding ids without having to execute a new script for each.

I already explained how it works in another thread here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/28631803/4566435 (or here's a direct link to my blog post)

For clarifications, let me know. Hope it helps!

How to configure log4j.properties for SpringJUnit4ClassRunner?

Check if a class is derived from a generic class

Added to @jaredpar's answer, here's what I use to check for interfaces:

public static bool IsImplementerOfRawGeneric(this Type type, Type toCheck)
{
    if (toCheck.GetTypeInfo().IsClass)
    {
        return false;
    }

    return type.GetInterfaces().Any(interfaceType =>
    {
        var current = interfaceType.GetTypeInfo().IsGenericType ?
                    interfaceType.GetGenericTypeDefinition() : interfaceType;
        return current == toCheck;
    });
}

public static bool IsSubTypeOfRawGeneric(this Type type, Type toCheck)
{
    return type.IsInterface ?
          IsImplementerOfRawGeneric(type, toCheck)
        : IsSubclassOfRawGeneric(type, toCheck);
}

Ex:

Console.WriteLine(typeof(IList<>).IsSubTypeOfRawGeneric(typeof(IList<int>))); // true

How do I set an ASP.NET Label text from code behind on page load?

I know this was posted a long while ago, and it has been marked answered, but to me, the selected answer was not answering the question I thought the user was posing. It seemed to me he was looking for the approach one can take in ASP .Net that corresponds to his inline data binding previously performed in php.

Here was his php:

<p>Here is the username: <?php echo GetUserName(); ?></p>

Here is what one would do in ASP .Net:

<p>Here is the username: <%= GetUserName() %></p>

Bash: Strip trailing linebreak from output

One way:

wc -l < log.txt | xargs echo -n

Is there a way to cast float as a decimal without rounding and preserving its precision?

Have you tried:

SELECT Cast( 2.555 as decimal(53,8))

This would return 2.55500000. Is that what you want?

UPDATE:

Apparently you can also use SQL_VARIANT_PROPERTY to find the precision and scale of a value. Example:

SELECT SQL_VARIANT_PROPERTY(Cast( 2.555 as decimal(8,7)),'Precision'),
SQL_VARIANT_PROPERTY(Cast( 2.555 as decimal(8,7)),'Scale')

returns 8|7

You may be able to use this in your conversion process...

How do I escape spaces in path for scp copy in Linux?

works

scp localhost:"f/a\ b\ c" .

scp localhost:'f/a\ b\ c' .

does not work

scp localhost:'f/a b c' .

The reason is that the string is interpreted by the shell before the path is passed to the scp command. So when it gets to the remote the remote is looking for a string with unescaped quotes and it fails

To see this in action, start a shell with the -vx options ie bash -vx and it will display the interpolated version of the command as it runs it.

How to check if android checkbox is checked within its onClick method (declared in XML)?

@BindView(R.id.checkbox_id) // if you are using Butterknife
CheckBox yourCheckBox;

@Override
protected void onCreate(@Nullable Bundle savedInstanceState) {
    super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
    setContentView(R.layout.your_activity);
    yourCheckBox = (CheckBox)findViewById(R.id.checkbox_id);// If your are not using Butterknife (the traditional way)

    yourCheckBox.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
        @Override
        public void onClick(View v) {
            yourObject.setYourProperty(yourCheckBox.isChecked()); //yourCheckBox.isChecked() is the method to know if the checkBox is checked
            Log.d(TAG, "onClick: yourCheckBox = " + yourObject.getYourProperty() );
        }
    });
}

Obviously you have to make your XML with the id of your checkbox :

<CheckBox
    android:id="@+id/checkbox_id"
    android:layout_width="wrap_content"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="Your label"
    />

So, the method to know if the check box is checked is : (CheckBox) yourCheckBox.isChecked() it returns true if the check box is checked.

How do I stop a program when an exception is raised in Python?

You can stop catching the exception, or - if you need to catch it (to do some custom handling), you can re-raise:

try:
  doSomeEvilThing()
except Exception, e:
  handleException(e)
  raise

Note that typing raise without passing an exception object causes the original traceback to be preserved. Typically it is much better than raise e.

Of course - you can also explicitly call

import sys
sys.exit(exitCodeYouFindAppropriate)

This causes SystemExit exception to be raised, and (unless you catch it somewhere) terminates your application with specified exit code.

Handling a timeout error in python sockets

When you do from socket import * python is loading a socket module to the current namespace. Thus you can use module's members as if they are defined within your current python module.

When you do import socket, a module is loaded in a separate namespace. When you are accessing its members, you should prefix them with a module name. For example, if you want to refer to a socket class, you will need to write client_socket = socket.socket(socket.AF_INET,socket.SOCK_DGRAM).

As for the problem with timeout - all you need to do is to change except socket.Timeouterror: to except timeout:, since timeout class is defined inside socket module and you have imported all its members to your namespace.

How do I generate a SALT in Java for Salted-Hash?

Inspired from this post and that post, I use this code to generate and verify hashed salted passwords. It only uses JDK provided classes, no external dependency.

The process is:

  • you create a salt with getNextSalt
  • you ask the user his password and use the hash method to generate a salted and hashed password. The method returns a byte[] which you can save as is in a database with the salt
  • to authenticate a user, you ask his password, retrieve the salt and hashed password from the database and use the isExpectedPassword method to check that the details match

Learning to write a compiler

As an starting point, it will be good to create a recursive descent parser (RDP) (let's say you want to create your own flavour of BASIC and build a BASIC interpreter) to understand how to write a compiler. I found the best information in Herbert Schild's C Power Users, chapter 7. This chapter refers to another book of H. Schildt "C The complete Reference" where he explains how to create a calculator (a simple expression parser). I found both books on eBay very cheap. You can check the code for the book if you go to www.osborne.com or check in www.HerbSchildt.com I found the same code but for C# in his latest book

What's the difference between "app.render" and "res.render" in express.js?

use app.render in scenarios where you need to render a view but not send it to a client via http. html emails springs to mind.

ORDER BY items must appear in the select list if SELECT DISTINCT is specified

Distinct and Group By generally do the same kind of thing, for different purposes... They both create a 'working" table in memory based on the columns being Grouped on, (or selected in the Select Distinct clause) - and then populate that working table as the query reads data, adding a new "row" only when the values indicate the need to do so...

The only difference is that in the Group By there are additional "columns" in the working table for any calculated aggregate fields, like Sum(), Count(), Avg(), etc. that need to updated for each original row read. Distinct doesn't have to do this... In the special case where you Group By only to get distinct values, (And there are no aggregate columns in output), then it is probably exactly the same query plan.... It would be interesting to review the query execution plan for the two options and see what it did...

Certainly Distinct is the way to go for readability if that is what you are doing (When your purpose is to eliminate duplicate rows, and you are not calculating any aggregate columns)

Are complex expressions possible in ng-hide / ng-show?

This will work if you do not have too many expressions.

Example: ng-show="form.type === 'Limited Company' || form.type === 'Limited Partnership'"

For any more expressions than this use a controller.

how to make a whole row in a table clickable as a link?

Here is a way by putting a transparent A element over the table rows. Advantages are:

  • is a real link element: on hover changes pointer, shows target link in status bar, can be keyboard navigated, can be opened in new tab or window, the URL can be copied, etc
  • the table looks the same as without the link added
  • no changes in table code itself

Disadvantages:

  • size of the A element must be set in a script, both on creation and after any changes to the size of the row it covers (otherwise it could be done with no JavaScript at all, which is still possible if the table size is also set in HTML or CSS)

The table stays as is:

<table id="tab1">
<tbody>
        <tr>
            <td>Blah Blah</td>
            <td>1234567</td>
            <td>£158,000</td>
        </tr>
</tbody>
</table>

Add the links (for each row) via jQuery JavaScript by inserting an A element into each first column and setting the needed properties:

// v1, fixed for IE and Chrome
// v0, worked on Firefox only
// width needed for adjusting the width of the A element
var mywidth=$('#tab1').width();

$('#tab1 tbody>tr>td:nth-child(1)').each(function(index){
    $(this).css('position',  'relative');// debug: .css('background-color', '#f11');
    // insert the <A> element
    var myA=$('<A>');
    $(this).append(myA);
    var myheight=$(this).height();

    myA.css({//"border":'1px solid #2dd', border for debug only
            'display': 'block',
            'left': '0',
            'top': '0',
            'position':  'absolute'
        })
        .attr('href','the link here')
        .width(mywidth)
        .height(myheight)
        ;
    });

The width and height setting can be tricky, if many paddings and margins are used, but in general a few pixels off should not even matter.

Live demo here: http://jsfiddle.net/qo0dx0oo/ (works in Firefox, but not IE or Chrome, there the link is positioned wrong)

Fixed for Chrome and IE (still works in FF too): http://jsfiddle.net/qo0dx0oo/2/

Check if string is in a pandas dataframe

a['Names'].str.contains('Mel') will return an indicator vector of boolean values of size len(BabyDataSet)

Therefore, you can use

mel_count=a['Names'].str.contains('Mel').sum()
if mel_count>0:
    print ("There are {m} Mels".format(m=mel_count))

Or any(), if you don't care how many records match your query

if a['Names'].str.contains('Mel').any():
    print ("Mel is there")

This issue can also raise when you change your system password but not the same updated on your .npmrc file that exist on path C:\Users\user_name, so update your password there too.

please check on it and run npm install first and then npm start.

What's the best way to do a backwards loop in C/C#/C++?

Looks good to me. If the indexer was unsigned (uint etc), you might have to take that into account. Call me lazy, but in that (unsigned) case, I might just use a counter-variable:

uint pos = arr.Length;
for(uint i = 0; i < arr.Length ; i++)
{
    arr[--pos] = 42;
}

(actually, even here you'd need to be careful of cases like arr.Length = uint.MaxValue... maybe a != somewhere... of course, that is a very unlikely case!)

window.onbeforeunload and window.onunload is not working in Firefox, Safari, Opera?

The onunload event is not called in all browsers. Worse, you cannot check the return value of onbeforeunload event. That prevents us from actually preforming a logout function.

However, you can hack around this.

Call logout first thing in the onbeforeunload event. then prompt the user. If the user cancels their logout, automatically login them back in, by using the onfocus event. Kinda backwards, but I think it should work.

'use strict';

var reconnect = false;

window.onfocus = function () {
  if (reconnect) {
    reconnect = false;
    alert("Perform an auto-login here!");
  }
};

window.onbeforeunload = function () {
  //logout();
  var msg = "Are you sure you want to leave?";
  reconnect = true;
  return msg;
};

'Static readonly' vs. 'const'

Constants are like the name implies, fields which don't change and are usually defined statically at compile time in the code.

Read-only variables are fields that can change under specific conditions.

They can be either initialized when you first declare them like a constant, but usually they are initialized during object construction inside the constructor.

They cannot be changed after the initialization takes place, in the conditions mentioned above.

Static read-only sounds like a poor choice to me since, if it's static and it never changes, so just use it public const. If it can change then it's not a constant and then, depending on your needs, you can either use read-only or just a regular variable.

Also, another important distinction is that a constant belongs to the class, while the read-only variable belongs to the instance!

Apache Tomcat Not Showing in Eclipse Server Runtime Environments

In my case I needed to install "JST Server Adapters". I am running Eclipse 3.6 Helios RCP Edition.

Here are the steps I followed:

  1. Help -> Install New Software
  2. Choose "Helios - http://download.eclipse.org/releases/helios" site or kepler - http://download.ecliplse.org/releases/kepler
  3. Expand "Web, XML, and Java EE Development"
  4. Check JST Server Adapters (version 3.2.2)

After that I could define new Server Runtime Environments.

EDIT: With Eclipse 3.7 Indigo Classic, Eclipse Kepler and Luna, the steps are the same (with appropriate update site) but you need both JST Server Adapters and JST Server Adapters Extentions to get the Server Runtime Environment options.

Use of REPLACE in SQL Query for newline/ carriage return characters

There are probably embedded tabs (CHAR(9)) etc. as well. You can find out what other characters you need to replace (we have no idea what your goal is) with something like this:

DECLARE @var NVARCHAR(255), @i INT;

SET @i = 1;

SELECT @var = AccountType FROM dbo.Account
  WHERE AccountNumber = 200
  AND AccountType LIKE '%Daily%';

CREATE TABLE #x(i INT PRIMARY KEY, c NCHAR(1), a NCHAR(1));

WHILE @i <= LEN(@var)
BEGIN
  INSERT #x
    SELECT SUBSTRING(@var, @i, 1), ASCII(SUBSTRING(@var, @i, 1));

  SET @i = @i + 1;
END

SELECT i,c,a FROM #x ORDER BY i;

You might also consider doing better cleansing of this data before it gets into your database. Cleaning it every time you need to search or display is not the best approach.

JavaScript for...in vs for

Douglas Crockford recommends in JavaScript: The Good Parts (page 24) to avoid using the for in statement.

If you use for in to loop over property names in an object, the results are not ordered. Worse: You might get unexpected results; it includes members inherited from the prototype chain and the name of methods.

Everything but the properties can be filtered out with .hasOwnProperty. This code sample does what you probably wanted originally:

for (var name in obj) {
    if (Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty.call(obj, name)) {
        // DO STUFF
    }
}

How to use moment.js library in angular 2 typescript app?

The following worked for me.

First, install the type definitions for moment.

typings install moment --save

(Note: NOT --ambient)

Then, to work around the lack of a proper export:

import * as moment from 'moment';

How to do a HTTP HEAD request from the windows command line?

If you cannot install aditional applications, then you can telnet (you will need to install this feature for your windows 7 by following this) the remote server:

TELNET server_name 80

followed by:

HEAD /virtual/directory/file.ext

or

GET /virtual/directory/file.ext

depending on if you want just the header (HEAD) or the full contents (GET)

displayname attribute vs display attribute

DisplayName sets the DisplayName in the model metadata. For example:

[DisplayName("foo")]
public string MyProperty { get; set; }

and if you use in your view the following:

@Html.LabelFor(x => x.MyProperty)

it would generate:

<label for="MyProperty">foo</label>

Display does the same, but also allows you to set other metadata properties such as Name, Description, ...

Brad Wilson has a nice blog post covering those attributes.

How do I install a plugin for vim?

Update (as 2019):

cd ~/.vim
git clone git://github.com/tpope/vim-haml.git pack/bundle/start/haml

Explanation (from :h pack ad :h packages):

  1. All the directories found are added to runtimepath. They must be in ~/.vim/pack/whatever/start [you can only change whatever].
  2. the plugins found in the plugins dir in runtimepath are sourced.

So this load the plugin on start (hence the name start).

You can also get optional plugin (loaded with :packadd) if you put them in ~/.vim/pack/bundle/opt

how to loop through each row of dataFrame in pyspark

To "loop" and take advantage of Spark's parallel computation framework, you could define a custom function and use map.

def customFunction(row):

   return (row.name, row.age, row.city)

sample2 = sample.rdd.map(customFunction)

or

sample2 = sample.rdd.map(lambda x: (x.name, x.age, x.city))

The custom function would then be applied to every row of the dataframe. Note that sample2 will be a RDD, not a dataframe.

Map may be needed if you are going to perform more complex computations. If you just need to add a simple derived column, you can use the withColumn, with returns a dataframe.

sample3 = sample.withColumn('age2', sample.age + 2)

How to wait in a batch script?

You'd better ping 127.0.0.1. Windows ping pauses for one second between pings so you if you want to sleep for 10 seconds, use

ping -n 11 127.0.0.1 > nul

This way you don't need to worry about unexpected early returns (say, there's no default route and the 123.45.67.89 is instantly known to be unreachable.)

C++ inheritance - inaccessible base?

You have to do this:

class Bar : public Foo
{
    // ...
}

The default inheritance type of a class in C++ is private, so any public and protected members from the base class are limited to private. struct inheritance on the other hand is public by default.

Check element CSS display with JavaScript

If the style was declared inline or with JavaScript, you can just get at the style object:

return element.style.display === 'block';

Otherwise, you'll have to get the computed style, and there are browser inconsistencies. IE uses a simple currentStyle object, but everyone else uses a method:

return element.currentStyle ? element.currentStyle.display :
                              getComputedStyle(element, null).display;

The null was required in Firefox version 3 and below.

plotting different colors in matplotlib

@tcaswell already answered, but I was in the middle of typing my answer up, so I'll go ahead and post it...

There are a number of different ways you could do this. To begin with, matplotlib will automatically cycle through colors. By default, it cycles through blue, green, red, cyan, magenta, yellow, black:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.linspace(0, 1, 10)
for i in range(1, 6):
    plt.plot(x, i * x + i, label='$y = {i}x + {i}$'.format(i=i))
plt.legend(loc='best')
plt.show()

enter image description here

If you want to control which colors matplotlib cycles through, use ax.set_color_cycle:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.linspace(0, 1, 10)
fig, ax = plt.subplots()
ax.set_color_cycle(['red', 'black', 'yellow'])
for i in range(1, 6):
    plt.plot(x, i * x + i, label='$y = {i}x + {i}$'.format(i=i))
plt.legend(loc='best')
plt.show()

enter image description here

If you'd like to explicitly specify the colors that will be used, just pass it to the color kwarg (html colors names are accepted, as are rgb tuples and hex strings):

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.linspace(0, 1, 10)
for i, color in enumerate(['red', 'black', 'blue', 'brown', 'green'], start=1):
    plt.plot(x, i * x + i, color=color, label='$y = {i}x + {i}$'.format(i=i))
plt.legend(loc='best')
plt.show()

enter image description here

Finally, if you'd like to automatically select a specified number of colors from an existing colormap:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.linspace(0, 1, 10)
number = 5
cmap = plt.get_cmap('gnuplot')
colors = [cmap(i) for i in np.linspace(0, 1, number)]

for i, color in enumerate(colors, start=1):
    plt.plot(x, i * x + i, color=color, label='$y = {i}x + {i}$'.format(i=i))
plt.legend(loc='best')
plt.show()

How to create query parameters in Javascript?

Zabba has provided in a comment on the currently accepted answer a suggestion that to me is the best solution: use jQuery.param().

If I use jQuery.param() on the data in the original question, then the code is simply:

const params = jQuery.param({
    var1: 'value',
    var2: 'value'
});

The variable params will be

"var1=value&var2=value"

For more complicated examples, inputs and outputs, see the jQuery.param() documentation.

Where does flask look for image files?

It took me a while to figure this out too. url_for in Flask looks for endpoints that you specified in the routes.py script.

So if you have a decorator in your routes.py file like @blah.route('/folder.subfolder') then Flask will recognize the command {{ url_for('folder.subfolder') , filename = "some_image.jpg" }} . The 'folder.subfolder' argument sends it to a Flask endpoint it recognizes.

However let us say that you stored your image file, some_image.jpg, in your subfolder, BUT did not specify this subfolder as a route endpoint in your flask routes.py, your route decorator looks like @blah.routes('/folder'). You then have to ask for your image file this way: {{ url_for('folder'), filename = 'subfolder/some_image.jpg' }}

I.E. you tell Flask to go to the endpoint it knows, "folder", then direct it from there by putting the subdirectory path in the filename argument.

How do I concatenate strings?

I think that concat method and + should be mentioned here as well:

assert_eq!(
  ("My".to_owned() + " " + "string"),
  ["My", " ", "string"].concat()
);

and there is also concat! macro but only for literals:

let s = concat!("test", 10, 'b', true);
assert_eq!(s, "test10btrue");

How to make a rest post call from ReactJS code?

Straight from the React docs:

fetch('https://mywebsite.com/endpoint/', {
  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
    'Accept': 'application/json',
    'Content-Type': 'application/json',
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({
    firstParam: 'yourValue',
    secondParam: 'yourOtherValue',
  })
})

(This is posting JSON, but you could also do, for example, multipart-form.)

How to generate different random numbers in a loop in C++?

Every iteration you are resetting the sequence of pseudorandom numbers because you are calling srand with the same seed (since the call to time is so frequent). Either use a different seed, or call srand once before you enter the loop.

Why is enum class preferred over plain enum?

It's worth noting, on top of these other answers, that C++20 solves one of the problems that enum class has: verbosity. Imagining a hypothetical enum class, Color.

void foo(Color c)
  switch (c) {
    case Color::Red: ...;
    case Color::Green: ...;
    case Color::Blue: ...;
    // etc
  }
}

This is verbose compared to the plain enum variation, where the names are in the global scope and therefore don't need to be prefixed with Color::.

However, in C++20 we can use using enum to introduce all of the names in an enum to the current scope, solving the problem.

void foo(Color c)
  using enum Color;
  switch (c) {
    case Red: ...;
    case Green: ...;
    case Blue: ...;
    // etc
  }
}

So now, there is no reason not to use enum class.

How to "perfectly" override a dict?

How can I make as "perfect" a subclass of dict as possible?

The end goal is to have a simple dict in which the keys are lowercase.

  • If I override __getitem__/__setitem__, then get/set don't work. How do I make them work? Surely I don't need to implement them individually?

  • Am I preventing pickling from working, and do I need to implement __setstate__ etc?

  • Do I need repr, update and __init__?

  • Should I just use mutablemapping (it seems one shouldn't use UserDict or DictMixin)? If so, how? The docs aren't exactly enlightening.

The accepted answer would be my first approach, but since it has some issues, and since no one has addressed the alternative, actually subclassing a dict, I'm going to do that here.

What's wrong with the accepted answer?

This seems like a rather simple request to me:

How can I make as "perfect" a subclass of dict as possible? The end goal is to have a simple dict in which the keys are lowercase.

The accepted answer doesn't actually subclass dict, and a test for this fails:

>>> isinstance(MyTransformedDict([('Test', 'test')]), dict)
False

Ideally, any type-checking code would be testing for the interface we expect, or an abstract base class, but if our data objects are being passed into functions that are testing for dict - and we can't "fix" those functions, this code will fail.

Other quibbles one might make:

  • The accepted answer is also missing the classmethod: fromkeys.
  • The accepted answer also has a redundant __dict__ - therefore taking up more space in memory:

    >>> s.foo = 'bar'
    >>> s.__dict__
    {'foo': 'bar', 'store': {'test': 'test'}}

Actually subclassing dict

We can reuse the dict methods through inheritance. All we need to do is create an interface layer that ensures keys are passed into the dict in lowercase form if they are strings.

If I override __getitem__/__setitem__, then get/set don't work. How do I make them work? Surely I don't need to implement them individually?

Well, implementing them each individually is the downside to this approach and the upside to using MutableMapping (see the accepted answer), but it's really not that much more work.

First, let's factor out the difference between Python 2 and 3, create a singleton (_RaiseKeyError) to make sure we know if we actually get an argument to dict.pop, and create a function to ensure our string keys are lowercase:

from itertools import chain
try:              # Python 2
    str_base = basestring
    items = 'iteritems'
except NameError: # Python 3
    str_base = str, bytes, bytearray
    items = 'items'

_RaiseKeyError = object() # singleton for no-default behavior

def ensure_lower(maybe_str):
    """dict keys can be any hashable object - only call lower if str"""
    return maybe_str.lower() if isinstance(maybe_str, str_base) else maybe_str

Now we implement - I'm using super with the full arguments so that this code works for Python 2 and 3:

class LowerDict(dict): # dicts take a mapping or iterable as their optional first argument
    __slots__ = () # no __dict__ - that would be redundant
    @staticmethod # because this doesn't make sense as a global function.
    def _process_args(mapping=(), **kwargs):
        if hasattr(mapping, items):
            mapping = getattr(mapping, items)()

We use an almost boiler-plate approach for any method or special method that references a key, but otherwise, by inheritance, we get methods: len, clear, items, keys, popitem, and values for free. While this required some careful thought to get right, it is trivial to see that this works.

(Note that haskey was deprecated in Python 2, removed in Python 3.)

Here's some usage:

>>> ld = LowerDict(dict(foo='bar'))
>>> ld['FOO']
'bar'
>>> ld['foo']
'bar'
>>> ld.pop('FoO')
'bar'
>>> ld.setdefault('Foo')
>>> ld
{'foo': None}
>>> ld.get('Bar')
>>> ld.setdefault('Bar')
>>> ld
{'bar': None, 'foo': None}
>>> ld.popitem()
('bar', None)

Am I preventing pickling from working, and do I need to implement __setstate__ etc?

pickling

And the dict subclass pickles just fine:

>>> import pickle
>>> pickle.dumps(ld)
b'\x80\x03c__main__\nLowerDict\nq\x00)\x81q\x01X\x03\x00\x00\x00fooq\x02Ns.'
>>> pickle.loads(pickle.dumps(ld))
{'foo': None}
>>> type(pickle.loads(pickle.dumps(ld)))
<class '__main__.LowerDict'>

__repr__

Do I need repr, update and __init__?

We defined update and __init__, but you have a beautiful __repr__ by default:

>>> ld # without __repr__ defined for the class, we get this
{'foo': None}

However, it's good to write a __repr__ to improve the debugability of your code. The ideal test is eval(repr(obj)) == obj. If it's easy to do for your code, I strongly recommend it:

>>> ld = LowerDict({})
>>> eval(repr(ld)) == ld
True
>>> ld = LowerDict(dict(a=1, b=2, c=3))
>>> eval(repr(ld)) == ld
True

You see, it's exactly what we need to recreate an equivalent object - this is something that might show up in our logs or in backtraces:

>>> ld
LowerDict({'a': 1, 'c': 3, 'b': 2})

Conclusion

Should I just use mutablemapping (it seems one shouldn't use UserDict or DictMixin)? If so, how? The docs aren't exactly enlightening.

Yeah, these are a few more lines of code, but they're intended to be comprehensive. My first inclination would be to use the accepted answer, and if there were issues with it, I'd then look at my answer - as it's a little more complicated, and there's no ABC to help me get my interface right.

Premature optimization is going for greater complexity in search of performance. MutableMapping is simpler - so it gets an immediate edge, all else being equal. Nevertheless, to lay out all the differences, let's compare and contrast.

I should add that there was a push to put a similar dictionary into the collections module, but it was rejected. You should probably just do this instead:

my_dict[transform(key)]

It should be far more easily debugable.

Compare and contrast

There are 6 interface functions implemented with the MutableMapping (which is missing fromkeys) and 11 with the dict subclass. I don't need to implement __iter__ or __len__, but instead I have to implement get, setdefault, pop, update, copy, __contains__, and fromkeys - but these are fairly trivial, since I can use inheritance for most of those implementations.

The MutableMapping implements some things in Python that dict implements in C - so I would expect a dict subclass to be more performant in some cases.

We get a free __eq__ in both approaches - both of which assume equality only if another dict is all lowercase - but again, I think the dict subclass will compare more quickly.

Summary:

  • subclassing MutableMapping is simpler with fewer opportunities for bugs, but slower, takes more memory (see redundant dict), and fails isinstance(x, dict)
  • subclassing dict is faster, uses less memory, and passes isinstance(x, dict), but it has greater complexity to implement.

Which is more perfect? That depends on your definition of perfect.

How to Validate on Max File Size in Laravel?

According to the documentation:

The value is in kilobytes. I.e. max:10240 = max 10 MB.

Package opencv was not found in the pkg-config search path

I got the same error when trying to compile a Go package on Debian 9.8:

# pkg-config --cflags  -- libssl libcrypto
Package libssl was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libssl.pc'

The thing is that pkg-config searches for package meta-information in .pc files. Such files come from the dev package. So, even though I had libssl installed, I still got the error. It was resolved by running:

sudo apt-get install libssl-dev

Django REST Framework: adding additional field to ModelSerializer

class Demo(models.Model):
    ...
    @property
    def property_name(self):
        ...

If you want to use the same property name:

class DemoSerializer(serializers.ModelSerializer):
    property_name = serializers.ReadOnlyField()
    class Meta:
        model = Product
        fields = '__all__' # or you can choose your own fields

If you want to use different property name, just change this:

new_property_name = serializers.ReadOnlyField(source='property_name')

How to pass a querystring or route parameter to AWS Lambda from Amazon API Gateway

The Lambda function expects JSON input, therefore parsing the query string is needed. The solution is to change the query string to JSON using the Mapping Template.
I used it for C# .NET Core, so the expected input should be a JSON with "queryStringParameters" parameter.
Follow these 4 steps below to achieve that:

  1. Open the mapping template of your API Gateway resource and add new application/json content-tyap:

API Gateway mapping template

  1. Copy the template below, which parses the query string into JSON, and paste it into the mapping template:

    {
    "queryStringParameters": {#foreach($key in $input.params().querystring.keySet())#if($foreach.index > 0),#end"$key":"$input.params().querystring.get($key)"#end}
    }

  2. In the API Gateway, call your Lambda function and add the following query string (for the example): param1=111&param2=222&param3=333

  3. The mapping template should create the JSON output below, which is the input for your Lambda function.

    {
    "queryStringParameters": {"param3":"333","param1":"111","param2":"222"}
    }

  4. You're done. From this point, your Lambda function's logic can use the query string parameters.
    Good luck!

Change variable name in for loop using R

Another option is using eval and parse, as in

d = 5
for (i in 1:10){
     eval(parse(text = paste('a', 1:10, ' = d + rnorm(3)', sep='')[i]))
}

How to do an update + join in PostgreSQL?

Here we go:

update vehicles_vehicle v
set price=s.price_per_vehicle
from shipments_shipment s
where v.shipment_id=s.id;

Simple as I could make it. Thanks guys!

Can also do this:

-- Doesn't work apparently
update vehicles_vehicle
set price=s.price_per_vehicle
from vehicles_vehicle v
join shipments_shipment s on v.shipment_id=s.id;

But then you've got the vehicle table in there twice, and you're only allowed to alias it once, and you can't use the alias in the "set" portion.

Import CSV file into SQL Server

You first need to create a table in your database in which you will be importing the CSV file. After the table is created, follow the steps below.

• Log into your database using SQL Server Management Studio

• Right click on your database and select Tasks -> Import Data...

• Click the Next > button

• For the Data Source, select Flat File Source. Then use the Browse button to select the CSV file. Spend some time configuring how you want the data to be imported before clicking on the Next > button.

• For the Destination, select the correct database provider (e.g. for SQL Server 2012, you can use SQL Server Native Client 11.0). Enter the Server name. Check the Use SQL Server Authentication radio button. Enter the User name, Password, and Database before clicking on the Next > button.

• On the Select Source Tables and Views window, you can Edit Mappings before clicking on the Next > button.

• Check the Run immediately check box and click on the Next > button.

• Click on the Finish button to run the package.

The above was found on this website (I have used it and tested):

How to run bootRun with spring profile via gradle task

Environment variables can be used to set spring properties as described in the documentation. So, to set the active profiles (spring.profiles.active) you can use the following code on Unix systems:

SPRING_PROFILES_ACTIVE=test gradle clean bootRun

And on Windows you can use:

SET SPRING_PROFILES_ACTIVE=test
gradle clean bootRun

Understanding the main method of python

The Python approach to "main" is almost unique to the language(*).

The semantics are a bit subtle. The __name__ identifier is bound to the name of any module as it's being imported. However, when a file is being executed then __name__ is set to "__main__" (the literal string: __main__).

This is almost always used to separate the portion of code which should be executed from the portions of code which define functionality. So Python code often contains a line like:

#!/usr/bin/env python
from __future__ import print_function
import this, that, other, stuff
class SomeObject(object):
    pass

def some_function(*args,**kwargs):
    pass

if __name__ == '__main__':
    print("This only executes when %s is executed rather than imported" % __file__)

Using this convention one can have a file define classes and functions for use in other programs, and also include code to evaluate only when the file is called as a standalone script.

It's important to understand that all of the code above the if __name__ line is being executed, evaluated, in both cases. It's evaluated by the interpreter when the file is imported or when it's executed. If you put a print statement before the if __name__ line then it will print output every time any other code attempts to import that as a module. (Of course, this would be anti-social. Don't do that).

I, personally, like these semantics. It encourages programmers to separate functionality (definitions) from function (execution) and encourages re-use.

Ideally almost every Python module can do something useful if called from the command line. In many cases this is used for managing unit tests. If a particular file defines functionality which is only useful in the context of other components of a system then one can still use __name__ == "__main__" to isolate a block of code which calls a suite of unit tests that apply to this module.

(If you're not going to have any such functionality nor unit tests than it's best to ensure that the file mode is NOT executable).

Summary: if __name__ == '__main__': has two primary use cases:

  • Allow a module to provide functionality for import into other code while also providing useful semantics as a standalone script (a command line wrapper around the functionality)
  • Allow a module to define a suite of unit tests which are stored with (in the same file as) the code to be tested and which can be executed independently of the rest of the codebase.

It's fairly common to def main(*args) and have if __name__ == '__main__': simply call main(*sys.argv[1:]) if you want to define main in a manner that's similar to some other programming languages. If your .py file is primarily intended to be used as a module in other code then you might def test_module() and calling test_module() in your if __name__ == '__main__:' suite.

  • (Ruby also implements a similar feature if __file__ == $0).

Using .otf fonts on web browsers

You can implement your OTF font using @font-face like:

@font-face {
    font-family: GraublauWeb;
    src: url("path/GraublauWeb.otf") format("opentype");
}

@font-face {
    font-family: GraublauWeb;
    font-weight: bold;
    src: url("path/GraublauWebBold.otf") format("opentype");
}

// Edit: OTF now works in most browsers, see comments

However if you want to support a wide variety of browsers i would recommend you to switch to WOFF and TTF font types. WOFF type is implemented by every major desktop browser, while the TTF type is a fallback for older Safari, Android and iOS browsers. If your font is a free font, you could convert your font using for example a transfonter.

@font-face {
    font-family: GraublauWeb;
    src: url("path/GraublauWebBold.woff") format("woff"), url("path/GraublauWebBold.ttf")  format("truetype");
}

If you want to support nearly every browser that is still out there (not necessary anymore IMHO), you should add some more font-types like:

@font-face {
    font-family: GraublauWeb;
    src: url("webfont.eot"); /* IE9 Compat Modes */
    src: url("webfont.eot?#iefix") format("embedded-opentype"), /* IE6-IE8 */
         url("webfont.woff") format("woff"), /* Modern Browsers */
         url("webfont.ttf")  format("truetype"), /* Safari, Android, iOS */
         url("webfont.svg#svgFontName") format("svg"); /* Legacy iOS */
}

You can read more about why all these types are implemented and their hacks here. To get a detailed view of which file-types are supported by which browsers, see:

Is there any kind of hash code function in JavaScript?

The JavaScript specification defines indexed property access as performing a toString conversion on the index name. For example,

myObject[myProperty] = ...;

is the same as

myObject[myProperty.toString()] = ...;

This is necessary as in JavaScript

myObject["someProperty"]

is the same as

myObject.someProperty

And yes, it makes me sad as well :-(

Difference between "on-heap" and "off-heap"

Not 100%; however, it sounds like the heap is an object or set of allocated space (on RAM) that is built into the functionality of the code either Java itself or more likely functionality from ehcache itself, and the off-heap Ram is there own system as well; however, it sounds like this is one magnitude slower as it is not as organized, meaning it may not use a heap (meaning one long set of space of ram), and instead uses different address spaces likely making it slightly less efficient.

Then of course the next tier lower is hard-drive space itself.

I don't use ehcache, so you may not want to trust me, but that what is what I gathered from their documentation.

Vue.js getting an element within a component

SQL Server SELECT into existing table

If the destination table does exist but you don't want to specify column names:

DECLARE @COLUMN_LIST NVARCHAR(MAX);
DECLARE @SQL_INSERT NVARCHAR(MAX);

SET @COLUMN_LIST = (SELECT DISTINCT
    SUBSTRING(
        (
            SELECT ', table1.' + SYSCOL1.name  AS [text()]
            FROM sys.columns SYSCOL1
            WHERE SYSCOL1.object_id = SYSCOL2.object_id and SYSCOL1.is_identity <> 1
            ORDER BY SYSCOL1.object_id
            FOR XML PATH ('')
        ), 2, 1000)
FROM
    sys.columns SYSCOL2
WHERE
    SYSCOL2.object_id = object_id('dbo.TableOne') )

SET @SQL_INSERT =  'INSERT INTO dbo.TableTwo SELECT ' + @COLUMN_LIST + ' FROM dbo.TableOne table1 WHERE col3 LIKE ' + @search_key
EXEC sp_executesql @SQL_INSERT

Callback after all asynchronous forEach callbacks are completed

If you encounter asynchronous functions, and you want to make sure that before executing the code it finishes its task, we can always use the callback capability.

For example:

var ctr = 0;
posts.forEach(function(element, index, array){
    asynchronous(function(data){
         ctr++;
         if (ctr === array.length) {
             functionAfterForEach();
         }
    })
});

Note: functionAfterForEach is the function to be executed after foreach tasks are finished. asynchronous is the asynchronous function executed inside foreach.

How to change the default collation of a table?

It sets the default collation for the table; if you create a new column, that should be collated with latin_general_ci -- I think. Try specifying the collation for the individual column and see if that works. MySQL has some really bizarre behavior in regards to the way it handles this.

Counting the number of option tags in a select tag in jQuery

Ok, i had a few problems because i was inside a

$('.my-dropdown').live('click', function(){
});

I had multiples inside my page that's why i used a class.

My drop down was filled automatically by a ajax request when i clicked it, so i only had the element $(this)

so...

I had to do:

$('.my-dropdown').live('click', function(){
  total_tems = $(this).find('option').length;
});

How to replace list item in best way

Why not use the extension methods?

Consider the following code:

        var intArray = new int[] { 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4 };
        // Replaces the first occurance and returns the index
        var index = intArray.Replace(1, 0);
        // {0, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4}; index=1

        var stringList = new List<string> { "a", "a", "c", "d"};
        stringList.ReplaceAll("a", "b");
        // {"b", "b", "c", "d"};

        var intEnum = intArray.Select(x => x);
        intEnum = intEnum.Replace(0, 1);
        // {0, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4} => {1, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4}
  • No code duplication
  • There is no need to type long linq expressions
  • There is no need for additional usings

The source code:

                throw new ArgumentNullException(nameof(source));

            var index = source.IndexOf(oldValue);
            if (index != -1)
                source[index] = newValue;
            return index;

            if (source == null)
                throw new ArgumentNullException(nameof(source));

            return source.Select(x => EqualityComparer<T>.Default.Equals(x, oldValue) ? newValue : x);
        }
    }
}

The first two methods have been added to change the objects of reference types in place. Of course, you can use just the third method for all types.

P.S. Thanks to mike's observation, I've added the ReplaceAll method.

How do you modify a CSS style in the code behind file for divs in ASP.NET?

It's an HtmlGenericControl so not sure what the recommended way to do this is, so you could also do:

testSpace.Attributes.Add("style", "text-align: center;");

or

testSpace.Attributes.Add("class", "centerIt");

or

testSpace.Attributes["style"] = "text-align: center;";

or

testSpace.Attributes["class"] = "centerIt";

How do I implement charts in Bootstrap?

Definitely late to the party; anyway, for those interested, picking up on Lan's mention of HTML5 canvas, you can use gRaphaël Charting which has a MIT License (instead of HighCharts dual license). It's not Bootstrap-specific either, so it's more of a general suggestion.

I have to admit that HighCharts demos seem very pretty, and I have to warn that gRaphaël is quite hard to understand before becoming proficient with it. Anyway you can easily add nice features to your gRaphaël charts (say, tooltips or zooming effects), so it may be worth the effort.

What's the difference between Apache's Mesos and Google's Kubernetes

Kubernetes and Mesos are a match made in heaven. Kubernetes enables the Pod (group of co-located containers) abstraction, along with Pod labels for service discovery, load-balancing, and replication control. Mesos provides the fine-grained resource allocations for pods across nodes in a cluster, and can make Kubernetes play nicely with other frameworks running on the same cluster resources.

svn cleanup: sqlite: database disk image is malformed

Throughout my researches, I've found 2 viable solutions.

  1. If you're using any type of connections, ssh, samba, mounting, disconnect/unmount and reconnect/remount. Try again, this often resolved the problem for me. After that you can do svn cleanup or just keep on working normally (depending on when the problem appeared). Rebooting my computer also fixed the problem once... yes it's dumb I know!

  2. Some times all there is to do is to rm -rf your files (or if you're not familiar with the term, just delete your svn folder), and recheckout your svn repository once again. Please note that this does not always solve the problem and you might also have changes you don't want to lose. Which is why I use it as the second option.

Hope this helps you guys!

How do I flush the cin buffer?

Possibly:

std::cin.ignore(INT_MAX);

This would read in and ignore everything until EOF. (you can also supply a second argument which is the character to read until (ex: '\n' to ignore a single line).

Also: You probably want to do a: std::cin.clear(); before this too to reset the stream state.

Using an Alias in a WHERE clause

Just as an alternative approach to you can do:

WITH inner_table AS
(SELECT A.identifier
    , A.name
    , TO_NUMBER(DECODE( A.month_no
      , 1, 200803
      , 2, 200804
      , 3, 200805
      , 4, 200806
      , 5, 200807
      , 6, 200808
      , 7, 200809
      , 8, 200810
      , 9, 200811
      , 10, 200812
      , 11, 200701
      , 12, 200702
      , NULL)) as MONTH_NO
    , TO_NUMBER(TO_CHAR(B.last_update_date, 'YYYYMM')) as UPD_DATE
  FROM table_a A
    , table_b B
  WHERE A.identifier = B.identifier)

    SELECT * FROM inner_table
    WHERE MONTH_NO > UPD_DATE

Also you can create a permanent view for your queue and select from view.

CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW_1 AS (SELECT ...);
SELECT * FROM VIEW_1;

With Twitter Bootstrap, how can I customize the h1 text color of one page and leave the other pages to be default?

You can add your own id or class to the body tag of your index page to target all elements on that page with a custom style like so:

<body id="index">
   <h1>...</h1>
</body>

Then you can target the elements you wish to modify with your class or id like so:

#index h1 {
   color:red;
}

How do I concatenate text in a query in sql server?

You might want to consider NULL values as well. In your example, if the column notes has a null value, then the resulting value will be NULL. If you want the null values to behave as empty strings (so that the answer comes out 'SomeText'), then use the IsNull function:

Select IsNull(Cast(notes as nvarchar(4000)),'') + 'SomeText' From NotesTable a

Change image source in code behind - Wpf

The pack syntax you are using here is for an image that is contained as a Resource within your application, not for a loose file in the file system.

You simply want to pass the actual path to the UriSource:

How to upgrade safely php version in wamp server

WAMP server generally provide addond for different php/mysql versions. However you mentioned you have downloaded latest wamp server. As of now, latest Wamp server v2.5 provide PHP version 5.5.12

So you need to upgrade it manually as follow:

  1. Download binaries on php.net
  2. Extract all files in a new folder : C:/wamp/bin/php/php5.5.27/
  3. Copy the wampserver.conf from another php folder (like php/php5.5.12/) to the new folder
  4. Rename php.ini-development file to phpForApache.ini
  5. Done ! Restart WampServer (>Right Mouseclick on trayicon >Exit)

Although not asked, I'd recommend to vagrant/puppet or docker for local development. Check puphpet.com for details. It has slight learning curve but it will give you much better control of different versions of every tool.

How do you run a .bat file from PHP?

When you use the exec() function, it is as though you have a cmd terminal open and are typing commands straight to it.

Use single quotes like this $str = exec('start /B Path\to\batch.bat');
The /B means the bat will be executed in the background so the rest of the php will continue after running that line, as opposed to $str = exec('start /B /C command', $result); where command is executed and then result is stored for later use.

PS: It works for both Windows and Linux.
More details are here http://www.php.net/manual/en/function.exec.php :)

How do I pipe a subprocess call to a text file?

You could also just call the script from the terminal, outputting everything to a file, if that helps. This way:

$ /path/to/the/script.py > output.txt

This will overwrite the file. You can use >> to append to it.

If you want errors to be logged in the file as well, use &>> or &>.

How to get an absolute file path in Python

This always gets the right filename of the current script, even when it is called from within another script. It is especially useful when using subprocess.

import sys,os

filename = sys.argv[0]

from there, you can get the script's full path with:

>>> os.path.abspath(filename)
'/foo/bar/script.py'

It also makes easier to navigate folders by just appending /.. as many times as you want to go 'up' in the directories' hierarchy.

To get the cwd:

>>> os.path.abspath(filename+"/..")
'/foo/bar'

For the parent path:

>>> os.path.abspath(filename+"/../..")
'/foo'

By combining "/.." with other filenames, you can access any file in the system.

How do I use the ternary operator ( ? : ) in PHP as a shorthand for "if / else"?

You can do this even shorter by replacing echo with <?= code ?>

<?=(empty($storeData['street2'])) ? 'Yes <br />' : 'No <br />'?>

This is useful especially when you want to determine, inside a navbar, whether the menu option should be displayed as already visited (clicked) or not:

<li<?=($basename=='index.php' ? ' class="active"' : '')?>><a href="index.php">Home</a></li>

Java 8 Stream and operation on arrays

Be careful if you have to deal with large numbers.

How to handle checkboxes in ASP.NET MVC forms?

I know that this question was written when MVC3 wasn't out, but for anyone who comes to this question and are using MVC3, you may want the "correct" way to do this.

While I think that doing the whole

Contains("true");

thing is great and clean, and works on all MVC versions, the problem is that it doesn't take culture into account (as if it really matters in the case of a bool).

The "correct" way to figure out the value of a bool, at least in MVC3, is to use the ValueProvider.

var value = (bool)ValueProvider.GetValue("key").ConvertTo(typeof(bool));

I do this in one of my client's sites when I edit permissions:

var allPermissionsBase = Request.Params.AllKeys.Where(x => x.Contains("permission_")).ToList();
var allPermissions = new List<KeyValuePair<int, bool>>();

foreach (var key in allPermissionsBase)
{
     // Try to parse the key as int
     int keyAsInt;
     int.TryParse(key.Replace("permission_", ""), out keyAsInt);

     // Try to get the value as bool
     var value = (bool)ValueProvider.GetValue(key).ConvertTo(typeof(bool));
}

Now, the beauty of this is you can use this with just about any simple type, and it will even be correct based on the Culture (think money, decimals, etc).

The ValueProvider is what is used when you form your Actions like this:

public ActionResult UpdatePermissions(bool permission_1, bool permission_2)

but when you are trying to dynamically build these lists and check the values, you will never know the Id at compile time, so you have to process them on the fly.

How to close a GUI when I push a JButton?

By using System.exit(0); you would close the entire process. Is that what you wanted or did you intend to close only the GUI window and allow the process to continue running?

The quickest, easiest and most robust way to simply close a JFrame or JPanel with the click of a JButton is to add an actionListener to the JButton which will execute the line of code below when the JButton is clicked:

this.dispose();

If you are using the NetBeans GUI designer, the easiest way to add this actionListener is to enter the GUI editor window and double click the JButton component. Doing this will automatically create an actionListener and actionEvent, which can be modified manually by you.

Git Bash is extremely slow on Windows 7 x64

My Windows home directory is on the network, and I suspected that Git Bash commands were looking there first. Sure enough, when I looked at $PATH, it listed /h/bin first, where /h is a share on a Windows file server, even though /h/bin doesn't exist.
I edited /etc/profile and commented out the export command that puts it first in $PATH:

#export PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"

This made my commands run much faster, probably because Git Bash is no longer looking across the network for the executables. My /etc/profile was c:\Program Files (x86)\Git\etc\profile.

Selecting a Record With MAX Value

What do you mean costs too much? Too much what?

SELECT MAX(Balance) AS MaxBalance, CustomerID FROM CUSTOMERS GROUP BY CustomerID

If your table is properly indexed (Balance) and there has got to be an index on the PK than I am not sure what you mean about costs too much or seems unreliable? There is nothing unreliable about an aggregate that you are using and telling it to do. In this case, MAX() does exactly what you tell it to do - there's nothing magical about it.

Take a look at MAX() and if you want to filter it use the HAVING clause.

Blocks and yields in Ruby

I found this article to be very useful. In particular, the following example:

#!/usr/bin/ruby

def test
  yield 5
  puts "You are in the method test"
  yield 100
end

test {|i| puts "You are in the block #{i}"}

test do |i|
    puts "You are in the block #{i}"
end

which should give the following output:

You are in the block 5
You are in the method test
You are in the block 100
You are in the block 5
You are in the method test
You are in the block 100

So essentially each time a call is made to yield ruby will run the code in the do block or inside {}. If a parameter is provided to yield then this will be provided as a parameter to the do block.

For me, this was the first time that I understood really what the do blocks were doing. It is basically a way for the function to give access to internal data structures, be that for iteration or for configuration of the function.

So when in rails you write the following:

respond_to do |format|
  format.html { render template: "my/view", layout: 'my_layout' }
end

This will run the respond_to function which yields the do block with the (internal) format parameter. You then call the .html function on this internal variable which in turn yields the code block to run the render command. Note that .html will only yield if it is the file format requested. (technicality: these functions actually use block.call not yield as you can see from the source but the functionality is essentially the same, see this question for a discussion.) This provides a way for the function to perform some initialisation then take input from the calling code and then carry on processing if required.

Or put another way, it's similar to a function taking an anonymous function as an argument and then calling it in javascript.

Understanding timedelta

why do I have to pass seconds = uptime to timedelta

Because timedelta objects can be passed seconds, milliseconds, days, etc... so you need to specify what are you passing in (this is why you use the explicit key). Typecasting to int is superfluous as they could also accept floats.

and why does the string casting works so nicely that I get HH:MM:SS ?

It's not the typecasting that formats, is the internal __str__ method of the object. In fact you will achieve the same result if you write:

print datetime.timedelta(seconds=int(uptime))

Get Line Number of certain phrase in file Python

lookup = 'the dog barked'

    for num, line in enumerate(myFile, 1):
        if lookup in line:
            print 'found at line:', num

Adding items to an object through the .push() method

This is really easy: Example

//my object
var sendData = {field1:value1, field2:value2};

//add element
sendData['field3'] = value3;

"if not exist" command in batch file

if not exist "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom\" (
    mkdir "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" 2>nul
    if not errorlevel 1 (
        xcopy "%OSGEO4W_ROOT%\qgisconfig" "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" /s /v /e
    )
)

You have it almost done. The logic is correct, just some little changes.

This code checks for the existence of the folder (see the ending backslash, just to differentiate a folder from a file with the same name).

If it does not exist then it is created and creation status is checked. If a file with the same name exists or you have no rights to create the folder, it will fail.

If everyting is ok, files are copied.

All paths are quoted to avoid problems with spaces.

It can be simplified (just less code, it does not mean it is better). Another option is to always try to create the folder. If there are no errors, then copy the files

mkdir "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" 2>nul
if not errorlevel 1 (
    xcopy "%OSGEO4W_ROOT%\qgisconfig" "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" /s /v /e
)

In both code samples, files are not copied if the folder is not being created during the script execution.

EDITED - As dbenham comments, the same code can be written as a single line

md "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" 2>nul && xcopy "%OSGEO4W_ROOT%\qgisconfig" "%USERPROFILE%\.qgis-custom" /s /v /e

The code after the && will only be executed if the previous command does not set errorlevel. If mkdir fails, xcopy is not executed.

C++ "Access violation reading location" Error

You haven't posted the findvertex method, but Access Reading Violation with an offset like 0x00000048 means that the Vertex* f; in your getCost function is receiving null, and when trying to access the member adj in the null Vertex pointer (that is, in f), it is offsetting to adj (in this case, 72 bytes ( 0x48 bytes in decimal )), it's reading near the 0 or null memory address.

Doing a read like this violates Operating-System protected memory, and more importantly means whatever you're pointing at isn't a valid pointer. Make sure findvertex isn't returning null, or do a comparisong for null on f before using it to keep yourself sane (or use an assert):

assert( f != null ); // A good sanity check

EDIT:

If you have a map for doing something like a find, you can just use the map's find method to make sure the vertex exists:

Vertex* Graph::findvertex(string s)
{
    vmap::iterator itr = map1.find( s );
    if ( itr == map1.end() )
    {
        return NULL;
    }
    return itr->second;
}

Just make sure you're still careful to handle the error case where it does return NULL. Otherwise, you'll keep getting this access violation.

How to use target in location.href

Why not have a hidden anchor tag on the page with the target set as you need, then simulate clicking it when you need the pop out?

How can I simulate a click to an anchor tag?

This would work in the cases where the window.open did not work

No resource found that matches the given name '@style/Theme.AppCompat.Light'

If you are looking for the solution in Android Studio :

  1. Right click on your app
  2. Open Module Settings
  3. Select Dependencies tab
  4. Click on green + symbol which is on the right side
  5. Select Library Dependency
  6. Choose appcompat-v7 from list

How to create a fixed-size array of objects

One thing you could do would be to create a dictionary. Might be a little sloppy considering your looking for 64 elements but it gets the job done. Im not sure if its the "preferred way" to do it but it worked for me using an array of structs.

var tasks = [0:[forTasks](),1:[forTasks](),2:[forTasks](),3:[forTasks](),4:[forTasks](),5:[forTasks](),6:[forTasks]()]

Read .doc file with python

I agree with Shivam's answer except for textract doesn't exist for windows. And, for some reason antiword also fails to read the '.doc' files and gives an error:

'filename.doc' is not a word document. # This happens when the file wasn't generated via MS Office. Eg: Web-pages may be stored in .doc format offline.

So, I've got the following workaround to extract the text:

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup as bs
soup = bs(open(filename).read())
[s.extract() for s in soup(['style', 'script'])]
tmpText = soup.get_text()
text = "".join("".join(tmpText.split('\t')).split('\n')).encode('utf-8').strip()
print text

This script will work with most kinds of files. Have fun!
