What's the difference between ISO 8601 and RFC 3339 Date Formats?

There are lots of differences between ISO 8601 and RFC 3339. Here is some examples to give you an idea:

2020-12-09T16:09:53+00:00 is a date time value that is compliant both both standards.

2020-12-09 16:09:53+00:00 uses a space to separate the date and time. This is allowed by RFC 3339 but not allowed by ISO 8601.

2020-12-09T16:09:53-00:00 has a negative sign in the time offset. This is allowed by RFC 3339 but not allowed by ISO 8601.

20201209T160953Z omits the hyphens. This is allowed by ISO 8601 but not allowed by RFC 3339.

ISO 8601 allows for things like ordinal dates such as 2020-344 which represents the 344th day of year 2020. RFC 3339 doesn't allow for that.

For your questions:

Is one just an extension?

No. As shown above each standard supports syntax variations not supported by the the other standard. So one syntax is not a superset or an extension of the other.

Should I use one over the other?

Of course this depends on your scenario. A safe general strategy is to generate date time strings that are valid by both standards.

Another good general strategy is to use an existing standard library for parsing/formatting date time strings and not write custom implementations unless you are addressing a genuinely custom scenario.

Do I really need to care that bad?

Well, that's up to you. Most regular developers who deal with date time strings should have a high level understanding but don't need to dive into the details.

size of uint8, uint16 and uint32?

It's quite unclear how you are computing the size ("the size in debug mode"?").

Use printf():

printf("the size of c is %u\n", (unsigned int) sizeof c);

Normally you'd print a size_t value (which is the type sizeof returns) with %zu, but if you're using a pre-C99 compiler like Visual Studio that won't work.

You need to find the typedef statements in your code that define the custom names like uint8 and so on; those are not standard so nobody here can know how they're defined in your code.

New C code should use <stdint.h> which gives you uint8_t and so on.

As you want to specifically search for a wildcard character you need to escape that

This is done by adding the ESCAPE clause to your LIKE expression. The character that is specified with the ESCAPE clause will "invalidate" the following wildcard character.

You can use any character you like (just not a wildcard character). Most people use a \ because that is what many programming languages also use

SQL join format - nested inner joins

Since you've already received help on the query, I'll take a poke at your syntax question:

The first query employs some lesser-known ANSI SQL syntax which allows you to nest joins between the join and on clauses. This allows you to scope/tier your joins and probably opens up a host of other evil, arcane things.

Now, while a nested join cannot refer any higher in the join hierarchy than its immediate parent, joins above it or outside of its branch can refer to it... which is precisely what this ugly little guy is doing:

This looks a little confusing because join #2 is joining t1 to t2 without specifically referencing t2... however, it references t2 indirectly via t3 -as t3 is joined to t2 in join #1. While that may work, you may find the following a bit more (visually) linear and appealing:

Personally, I've found that nesting in this fashion keeps my statements tidy by outlining each tier of the relationship hierarchy. As a side note, you don't need to specify inner. join is implicitly inner unless explicitly marked otherwise.

What's the fastest way to do a bulk insert into Postgres?

It mostly depends on the (other) activity in the database. Operations like this effectively freeze the entire database for other sessions. Another consideration is the datamodel and the presence of constraints,triggers, etc.

My first approach is always: create a (temp) table with a structure similar to the target table (create table tmp AS select * from target where 1=0), and start by reading the file into the temp table. Then I check what can be checked: duplicates, keys that already exist in the target, etc.

Then I just do a "do insert into target select * from tmp" or similar.

If this fails, or takes too long, I abort it and consider other methods (temporarily dropping indexes/constraints, etc)

What is the difference between UNION and UNION ALL?

You can avoid duplicates and still run much faster than UNION DISTINCT (which is actually same as UNION) by running query like this:

Notice the AND a!=X part. This is much faster then UNION.

Does it make sense to use Require.js with Angular.js?

As @ganaraj mentioned AngularJS has dependency injection at its core. When building toy seed applications with and without RequireJS, I personally found RequireJS was probably overkill for most use cases.

That doesn't mean RequireJS is not useful for it's script loading capabilities and keeping your codebase clean during development. Combining the r.js optimizer (https://github.com/jrburke/r.js) with almond (https://github.com/jrburke/almond) can create a very slim script loading story. However since its dependency management features are not as important with angular at the core of your application, you can also evaluate other client side (HeadJS, LABjs, ...) or even server side (MVC4 Bundler, ...) script loading solutions for your particular application.

The best way is to begin coding with them. Design patterns are a great concept that are hard to apply from just reading about them. Take some sample implementations that you find online and build up around them.

A great resource is the Data & Object Factory page. They go over the patterns, and give you both conceptual and real world examples. Their reference material is great, too.

Ok it looks like NPM is using your .gitignore as a base for the .npmignore file, and thus ignores /lib. If you add a blank .npmignore file into the root of your application, everything should work.

Center a 'div' in the middle of the screen, even when the page is scrolled up or down?

I just found a new trick to center a box in the middle of the screen even if you don't have fixed dimensions. Let's say you would like a box 60% width / 60% height. The way to make it centered is by creating 2 boxes: a "container" box that position left: 50% top :50%, and a "text" box inside with reverse position left: -50%; top :-50%;

It works and it's cross browser compatible.

The whole point of getting things out as IEnumerable is so you can lazily iterate over the contents. As such, there isn't really a concept of an index. What you are doing really doesn't make a lot of sense for an IEnumerable. If you need something that supports access by index, put it in an actual list or collection.

TABLOCK vs TABLOCKX

Quite an old article on mssqlcity attempts to explain the types of locks:

Shared locks are used for operations that do not change or update data, such as a SELECT statement.

Update locks are used when SQL Server intends to modify a page, and later promotes the update page lock to an exclusive page lock before actually making the changes.

Exclusive locks are used for the data modification operations, such as UPDATE, INSERT, or DELETE.

What it doesn't discuss are Intent (which basically is a modifier for these lock types). Intent (Shared/Exclusive) locks are locks held at a higher level than the real lock. So, for instance, if your transaction has an X lock on a row, it will also have an IX lock at the table level (which stops other transactions from attempting to obtain an incompatible lock at a higher level on the table (e.g. a schema modification lock) until your transaction completes or rolls back).


The concept of "sharing" a lock is quite straightforward - multiple transactions can have a Shared lock for the same resource, whereas only a single transaction may have an Exclusive lock, and an Exclusive lock precludes any transaction from obtaining or holding a Shared lock.

jQuery UI - Close Dialog When Clicked Outside

This doesn't use jQuery UI, but does use jQuery, and may be useful for those who aren't using jQuery UI for whatever reason. Do it like so:

When you install third-party extensions you need to make sure that all the compilation parameters match:

  • PHP version
  • Architecture (32/64 bits)
  • Compiler (VC9, VC10, VC11...)
  • Thread safety

Common glitches includes:

Text files are files containing sequences of lines of text. Depending on the environment where the application runs, some special character conversion may occur in input/output operations in text mode to adapt them to a system-specific text file format. Although on some environments no conversions occur and both text files and binary files are treated the same way, using the appropriate mode improves portability.

The conversion could be to normalize \r\n to \n (or vice-versa), or maybe ignoring characters beyond 0x7F (a-la 'text mode' in FTP). Personally I'd open everything in binary-mode and use a good text-encoding library for dealing with text.

As you can see that a assignment is simply replaced by a "mov" instruction in assembly, the assignment operator simply means moving data from one memory location to another memory location. The assignment will only do it for immediate members of a structures and will fail to copy when you have Complex datatypes in a structure. Here COMPLEX means that you cant have array of pointers ,pointing to lists.

An array of characters within a structure will itself not work on most compilers, this is because assignment will simply try to copy without even looking at the datatype to be of complex type.

PHP Fatal error: Call to undefined function mssql_connect()

I am using IIS and mysql (directly downloaded, without wamp or xampp) My php was installed in c:\php I was getting the error of "call to undefined function mysql_connect()" For me the change of extension_dir worked. This is what I did. In the php.ini, Originally, I had this line

; On windows: extension_dir = "ext"

I changed it to:

; On windows: extension_dir = "C:\php\ext"

And it worked. Of course, I did the other things also like uncommenting the dll extensions etc, as explained in others remarks.

Why is the minidlna database not being refreshed?

MiniDLNA uses inotify, which is a functionality within the Linux kernel, used to discover changes in specific files and directories on the file system. To get it to work, you need inotify support enabled in your kernel.

The notify_interval (notice the lack of a leading 'i'), as far as I can tell, is only used if you have inotify disabled. To use the notify_interval (ie. get the server to 'poll' the file system for changes instead of automatically being notified of them), you have to disable the inotify functionality.

This is how it looks in my /etc/minidlna.conf:

Make sure that inotify is enabled in your kernel.

I previously came up with a different workaround that doesn't use stored procedures, but instead uses a parameter table and some connection_id() magic.

create a table that contains a column called connection_id (make it a bigint). Place columns in that table for parameters for the view. Put a primary key on the connection_id. replace into the parameter table and use CONNECTION_ID() to populate the connection_id value. In the view use a cross join to the parameter table and put WHERE param_table.connection_id = CONNECTION_ID(). This will cross join with only one row from the parameter table which is what you want. You can then use the other columns in the where clause for example where orders.order_id = param_table.order_id.

A tool to use here is awk:

How does this work:

  1. We set the variable 'found' to zero, evaluating false

Visio Professional has a database reverse-engineering feature if yiu create a database diagram. It's not free but is fairly ubiquitous in most companies and should be fairly easy to get.

Linking dll in Visual Studio

I find it useful to understand the underlying tools. These are cl.exe (compiler) and link.exe (linker). You need to tell the compiler the signatures of the functions you want to call in the dynamic library (by including the library's header) and you need to tell the linker what the library is called and how to call it (by including the "implib" or import library).

This is roughly the same process gcc uses for linking to dynamic libraries on *nix, only the library object file differs.

Knowing the underlying tools means you can more quickly find the appropriate settings in the IDE and allows you to check that the commandlines generated are correct.

Say A.exe depends B.dll. You need to include B's header in A.cpp (#include "B.h") then compile and link with B.lib:

cl A.cpp /c /EHsc
link A.obj B.lib

The first line generates A.obj, the second generates A.exe. The /c flag tells cl not to link and /EHsc specifies what kind of C++ exception handling the binary should use (there's no default, so you have to specify something).

If you don't specify /c cl will call link for you. You can use the /link flag to specify additional arguments to link and do it all at once if you like:

cl A.cpp /EHsc /link B.lib

If B.lib is not on the INCLUDE path you can give a relative or absolute path to it or add its parent directory to your include path with the /I flag.

If you're calling from cygwin (as I do) replace the forward slashes with dashes.

If you write #pragma comment(lib, "B.lib") in A.cpp you're just telling the compiler to leave a comment in A.obj telling the linker to link to B.lib. It's equivalent to specifying B.lib on the link commandline.

Using attr() pointing to an external domain may trigger an error like this in Chrome: "Refused to display document because display forbidden by X-Frame-Options". The workaround to this can be to move the whole iframe HTML code into the script (eg. using .html() in jQuery).

Of course it's possible to create a foreign key relationship to a compound (more than one column) primary key. You didn't show us the statement you're using to try and create that relationship - it should be something like:

Best practices for styling HTML emails

I find that image mapping works pretty well. If you have any headers or footers that are images make sure that you apply a bgcolor="fill in the blank" because outlook in most cases wont load the image and you will be left with a transparent header. If you at least designate a color that works with the over all feel of the email it will be less of a shock for the user. Never try and use any styling sheets. Or CSS at all! Just avoid it.

Depending if you're copying content from a word or shared google Doc be sure to (command+F) Find all the (') and (") and replace them within your editing software (especially dreemweaver) because they will show up as code and it's just not good.

ALT is your best friend. use the ALT tag to add in text to all your images. Because odds are they are not going to load right. And that ALT text is what gets people to click the (see images) button. Also define your images Width, Height and make the boarder 0 so you dont get weird lines around your image.

Consider editing all images within Photoshop with a 15px boarder on each side (make background transparent and save as a PNG 24) of image. Sometimes the email clients do not read any padding styles that you apply to the images so it avoids any weird formatting!

Also i found the line under links particularly annoying so if you apply < style="text-decoration:none; color:#whatever color you want here!" > it will remove the line and give you the desired look.

There is alot that can really mess with the over all look and feel.

Change first commit of project with Git?

As mentioned by ecdpalma below, git 1.7.12+ (August 2012) has enhanced the option --root for git rebase:

"git rebase [-i] --root $tip" can now be used to rewrite all the history leading to "$tip" down to the root commit.

That new behavior was initially discussed here:

I personally think "git rebase -i --root" should be made to just work without requiring "--onto" and let you "edit" even the first one in the history.
It is understandable that nobody bothered, as people are a lot less often rewriting near the very beginning of the history than otherwise.

The patch followed.

As mentioned in the Git FAQ (and this SO question), the idea is:

  1. Create new temporary branch
  2. Rewind it to the commit you want to change using git reset --hard
  3. Change that commit (it would be top of current HEAD, and you can modify the content of any file)
  4. Rebase branch on top of changed commit, using:

    git rebase --onto <tmp branch> <commit after changed> <branch>`
    

The trick is to be sure the information you want to remove is not reintroduced by a later commit somewhere else in your file. If you suspect that, then you have to use filter-branch --tree-filter to make sure the content of that file does not contain in any commit the sensible information.

In both cases, you end up rewriting the SHA1 of every commit, so be careful if you have already published the branch you are modifying the contents of. You probably shouldn’t do it unless your project isn’t yet public and other people haven’t based work off the commits you’re about to rewrite.

Force an SVN checkout command to overwrite current files

I have tested it it and it works for at least swift 5.

The magic variables %n contains the arguments used to invoke the file: %0 is the path to the bat-file itself, %1 is the first argument after, %2 is the second and so on.

To do this, you need to follow the additional steps as shown below.

I had similar issues when trying to build amtk and utthpmock with jhbuild.

I needed to install the most recent version of autoconf-archive. Instructions are at https://github.com/autoconf-archive/autoconf-archive/blob/master/README-maint. I did an additional sudo make install at the end.

The last step was to update my ACLOCAL_PATH:

SSL "Peer Not Authenticated" error with HttpClient 4.1

If the server's certificate is self-signed, then this is working as designed and you will have to import the server's certificate into your keystore.

Assuming the server certificate is signed by a well-known CA, this is happening because the set of CA certificates available to a modern browser is much larger than the limited set that is shipped with the JDK/JRE.

The EasySSL solution given in one of the posts you mention just buries the error, and you won't know if the server has a valid certificate.

You must import the proper Root CA into your keystore to validate the certificate. There's a reason you can't get around this with the stock SSL code, and that's to prevent you from writing programs that behave as if they are secure but are not.

I have a cell which is linked to online stock database and updated frequently. I want to trigger a macro whenever the cell value is updated.

I believe this is similar to cell value change by a program or any external data update but above examples somehow do not work for me. I think the problem is because excel internal events are not triggered, but thats my guess.

UBound(columns)-LBound(columns)+1

UBound alone is not the best method for getting the length of every array as arrays in VBA can start at different indexes, e.g Dim arr(2 to 10)

UBound will return correct results only if the array is 1-based (starts indexing at 1 e.g. Dim arr(1 to 10). It will return wrong results in any other circumstance e.g. Dim arr(10)

Someone on another forum mentioned that you need to keep a mention of plain ol' localhost in the httpd-vhost.conf file, so here's what I ended up with in there:

Here's an utility function that I wrote to wrap the retry until success into a neater package. It uses the same basic structure, but prevents repetition. It could be modified to catch and rethrow the exception on the final try relatively easily.

Get timezone from users browser using moment(timezone).js

When using moment.js, use:

var tz = moment.tz.guess();

It will return an IANA time zone identifier, such as America/Los_Angeles for the US Pacific time zone.

It is documented here.

Internally, it first tries to get the time zone from the browser using the following call:

Intl.DateTimeFormat().resolvedOptions().timeZone

If you are targeting only modern browsers that support this function, and you don't need Moment-Timezone for anything else, then you can just call that directly.

If Moment-Timezone doesn't get a valid result from that function, or if that function doesn't exist, then it will "guess" the time zone by testing several different dates and times against the Date object to see how it behaves. The guess is usually a good enough approximation, but not guaranteed to exactly match the time zone setting of the computer.

Create table in SQLite only if it doesn't exist already

TO ADD: @Christopher's answer does not work on API 7/8 (as per @Jonny's correct comment) IF you are using colours, instead of drawables. (In my testing, using drawables as per Christopher works fine)

Here is the FIX for 2.3 and below when using colours:

As per @Charles Harley, there is a bug in 2.3 and below where filling the list item with a colour causes the colour to flow out over the whole list. His fix is to define a shape drawable containing the colour you want, and to use that instead of the colour.

I suggest looking at this link if you want to just use a colour as selector, and are targeting Android 2 (or at least allow for Android 2).

Sorting int array in descending order

Guava has a method Ints.asList() for creating a List<Integer> backed by an int[] array. You can use this with Collections.sort to apply the Comparator to the underlying array.

List<Integer> integersList = Ints.asList(arr);
Collections.sort(integersList, Collections.reverseOrder());

Note that the latter is a live list backed by the actual array, so it should be pretty efficient.

Error Handler - Exit Sub vs. End Sub

Typically if you have database connections or other objects declared that, whether used safely or created prior to your exception, will need to be cleaned up (disposed of), then returning your error handling code back to the ProcExit entry point will allow you to do your garbage collection in both cases.

If you drop out of your procedure by falling to Exit Sub, you may risk having a yucky build-up of instantiated objects that are just sitting around in your program's memory.

As suggested by Mark Ransom, I found the right encoding for that problem. The encoding was "ISO-8859-1", so replacing open("u.item", encoding="utf-8") with open('u.item', encoding = "ISO-8859-1") will solve the problem.

figured it out - however it was not very intuitive.

First some Pain Points

  1. When You try to change the font size directly using edit -> format -> font, nothing happens! - Not a good UX ... moreover why play dumb when you can tell user that they are using default or "System-owned" theme and they cannot change it? - Bad Design and more bad UX ... Why keep this option (Cmd t) alive, which by the way is most standard way to increase font size across most well behaved mac apps, if you do not want user to change the font this way?

  2. In Xcode preferences, when you try to change the font size by clicking on "fonts and colors", thats when XCode gives a pop-up saying what needs to be done. Also making a duplicate and then changing the fonts and colors is a lot of work rather than giving a button that says "Restore to Defaults" if Apple is so worried about the user messing up the default settings!

The solution is that - you need to duplicate the theme and then modify the copy you just made and apply that copy - phew!

If the to-be-updated component is not inside the same NamingContainer component (ui:repeat, h:form, h:dataTable, etc), then you need to specify the "absolute" client ID. Prefix with : (the default NamingContainer separator character) to start from root.

To be sure, check the client ID of the subTotal component in the generated HTML for the actual value. If it's inside for example a h:form as well, then it's prefixed with its client ID as well and you would need to fix it accordingly.

What do I do when my program crashes with exception 0xc0000005 at address 0?

Exception code 0xc0000005 is an Access Violation. An AV at fault offset 0x00000000 means that something in your service's code is accessing a nil pointer. You will just have to debug the service while it is running to find out what it is accessing. If you cannot run it inside a debugger, then at least install a third-party exception logger framework, such as EurekaLog or MadExcept, to find out what your service was doing at the time of the AV.

Should import statements always be at the top of a module?

There can be a performance gain by importing variables/local scoping inside of a function. This depends on the usage of the imported thing inside the function. If you are looping many times and accessing a module global object, importing it as local can help.

Python open() gives FileNotFoundError/IOError: Errno 2 No such file or directory

  • Make sure the file exists: use os.listdir() to see the list of files in the current working directory
  • Make sure you're in the directory you think you're in with os.getcwd() (if you launch your code from an IDE, you may well be in a different directory)
  • You can then either:
    • Call os.chdir(dir), dir being the folder where the file is located, then open the file with just its name like you were doing.
    • Specify an absolute path to the file in your open call.
  • Remember to use a raw string if your path uses backslashes, like so: dir = r'C:\Python32'
    • If you don't use raw-string, you have to escape every backslash: 'C:\\User\\Bob\\...'
    • Forward-slashes also work on Windows 'C:/Python32' and do not need to be escaped.

Let me clarify how Python finds files:

  • An absolute path is a path that starts with your computer's root directory, for example 'C:\Python\scripts..' if you're on Windows.
  • A relative path is a path that does not start with your computer's root directory, and is instead relative to something called the working directory. You can view Python's current working directory by calling os.getcwd().

If you try to do open('sortedLists.yaml'), Python will see that you are passing it a relative path, so it will search for the file inside the current working directory. Calling os.chdir will change the current working directory.

Example: Let's say file.txt is found in C:\Folder.

To open it, you can do:
