Programs & Examples On #Thread safety

A piece of code is thread-safe if it only manipulates data structures in a way that allows consistent execution of this code by multiple threads. A code may be thread safe, conditionally safe (mutual exclusion required) or unsafe (can only be safely used by one thread).

What is thread Safe in java?

As Seth stated thread safe means that a method or class instance can be used by multiple threads at the same time without any problems occuring.

Consider the following method:

private int myInt = 0;
public int AddOne()
{
    int tmp = myInt;
    tmp = tmp + 1;
    myInt = tmp;
    return tmp;
}

Now thread A and thread B both would like to execute AddOne(). but A starts first and reads the value of myInt (0) into tmp. Now for some reason the scheduler decides to halt thread A and defer execution to thread B. Thread B now also reads the value of myInt (still 0) into it's own variable tmp. Thread B finishes the entire method, so in the end myInt = 1. And 1 is returned. Now it's Thread A's turn again. Thread A continues. And adds 1 to tmp (tmp was 0 for thread A). And then saves this value in myInt. myInt is again 1.

So in this case the method AddOne() was called two times, but because the method was not implemented in a thread safe way the value of myInt is not 2, as expected, but 1 because the second thread read the variable myInt before the first thread finished updating it.

Creating thread safe methods is very hard in non trivial cases. And there are quite a few techniques. In Java you can mark a method as synchronized, this means that only one thread can execute that method at a given time. The other threads wait in line. This makes a method thread safe, but if there is a lot of work to be done in a method, then this wastes a lot of time. Another technique is to 'mark only a small part of a method as synchronized' by creating a lock or semaphore, and locking this small part (usually called the critical section). There are even some methods that are implemented as lockless thread safe, which means that they are built in such a way that multiple threads can race through them at the same time without ever causing problems, this can be the case when a method only executes one atomic call. Atomic calls are calls that can't be interrupted and can only be done by one thread at a time.

What Makes a Method Thread-safe? What are the rules?

If a method (instance or static) only references variables scoped within that method then it is thread safe because each thread has its own stack:

In this instance, multiple threads could call ThreadSafeMethod concurrently without issue.

public class Thing
{
    public int ThreadSafeMethod(string parameter1)
    {
        int number; // each thread will have its own variable for number.
        number = parameter1.Length;
        return number;
    }
}

This is also true if the method calls other class method which only reference locally scoped variables:

public class Thing
{
    public int ThreadSafeMethod(string parameter1)
    {
        int number;
        number = this.GetLength(parameter1);
        return number;
    }

    private int GetLength(string value)
    {
        int length = value.Length;
        return length;
    }
}

If a method accesses any (object state) properties or fields (instance or static) then you need to use locks to ensure that the values are not modified by a different thread.

public class Thing
{
    private string someValue; // all threads will read and write to this same field value

    public int NonThreadSafeMethod(string parameter1)
    {
        this.someValue = parameter1;

        int number;

        // Since access to someValue is not synchronised by the class, a separate thread
        // could have changed its value between this thread setting its value at the start
        // of the method and this line reading its value.
        number = this.someValue.Length;
        return number;
    }
}

You should be aware that any parameters passed in to the method which are not either a struct or immutable could be mutated by another thread outside the scope of the method.

To ensure proper concurrency you need to use locking.

for further information see lock statement C# reference and ReadWriterLockSlim.

lock is mostly useful for providing one at a time functionality,
ReadWriterLockSlim is useful if you need multiple readers and single writers.

Thread-safe List<T> property

You can also use the more primitive

Monitor.Enter(lock);
Monitor.Exit(lock);

which lock uses (see this post C# Locking an object that is reassigned in lock block).

If you are expecting exceptions in the code this is not safe but it allows you to do something like the following:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Threading;
using System.Linq;

public class Something
{
    private readonly object _lock;
    private readonly List<string> _contents;

    public Something()
    {
        _lock = new object();

        _contents = new List<string>();
    }

    public Modifier StartModifying()
    {
        return new Modifier(this);
    }

    public class Modifier : IDisposable
    {
        private readonly Something _thing;

        public Modifier(Something thing)
        {
            _thing = thing;

            Monitor.Enter(Lock);
        }

        public void OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations(string input)
        {
            DoSomethingWith(input);
        }

        private void DoSomethingWith(string input)
        {
            Contents.Add(input);
        }

        private List<string> Contents
        {
            get { return _thing._contents; }
        }

        private object Lock
        {
            get { return _thing._lock; }
        }

        public void Dispose()
        {
            Monitor.Exit(Lock);
        }
    }
}

public class Caller
{
    public void Use(Something thing)
    {
        using (var modifier = thing.StartModifying())
        {
            modifier.OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations("A");
            modifier.OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations("B");

            modifier.OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations("A");
            modifier.OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations("A");
            modifier.OneOfLotsOfDifferentOperations("A");
        }
    }
}

One of the nice things about this is you'll get the lock for the duration of the series of operations (rather than locking in each operation). Which means that the output should come out in the right chunks (my usage of this was getting some output onto screen from an external process)

I do really like the simplicity + transparency of the ThreadSafeList + that does the important bit in stopping crashes

Android - Best and safe way to stop thread

My requirement was slightly different than the question, still this is also a useful way of stopping the thread to be executing its tasks. All I wanted to do is to stop the thread on exiting the screen and resumes while returning to the screen.

As per the Android docs, this would be the proposed replacement for stop method which has been deprecated from API 15

Many uses of stop should be replaced by code that simply modifies some variable to indicate that the target thread should stop running. The target thread should check this variable regularly, and return from its run method in an orderly fashion if the variable indicates that it is to stop running.

My Thread class

   class ThreadClass implements Runnable {
            ...
                  @Override
                        public void run() {
                            while (count < name.length()) {

                                if (!exited) // checks boolean
                                  {
                                   // perform your task
                                                     }
            ...

OnStop and OnResume would look like this

  @Override
    protected void onStop() {
        super.onStop();
        exited = true;
    }

    @Override
    protected void onResume() {
        super.onResume();
        exited = false;
    }

How does lock work exactly?

No, they are not queued, they are sleeping

A lock statement of the form

lock (x) ...

where x is an expression of a reference-type, is precisely equivalent to

var temp = x;
System.Threading.Monitor.Enter(temp);
try { ... }
finally { System.Threading.Monitor.Exit(temp); }

You just need to know that they are waiting to each other, and only one thread will enter to lock block, the others will wait...

Monitor is written fully in .net so it is enough fast, also look at class Monitor with reflector for more details

How can I make a JUnit test wait?

You could also use the CountDownLatch object like explained here.

What is thread safe or non-thread safe in PHP?

Apache MPM prefork with modphp is used because it is easy to configure/install. Performance-wise it is fairly inefficient. My preferred way to do the stack, FastCGI/PHP-FPM. That way you can use the much faster MPM Worker. The whole PHP remains non-threaded, but Apache serves threaded (like it should).

So basically, from bottom to top

Linux

Apache + MPM Worker + ModFastCGI (NOT FCGI) |(or)| Cherokee |(or)| Nginx

PHP-FPM + APC

ModFCGI does not correctly support PHP-FPM, or any external FastCGI applications. It only supports non-process managed FastCGI scripts. PHP-FPM is the PHP FastCGI process manager.

Java synchronized method lock on object, or method?

This might not work as the boxing and autoboxing from Integer to int and viceversa is dependant on JVM and there is high possibility that two different numbers might get hashed to same address if they are between -128 and 127.

How to stop a thread created by implementing runnable interface?

The simplest way is to interrupt() it, which will cause Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted() to return true, and may also throw an InterruptedException under certain circumstances where the Thread is waiting, for example Thread.sleep(), otherThread.join(), object.wait() etc.

Inside the run() method you would need catch that exception and/or regularly check the Thread.currentThread().isInterrupted() value and do something (for example, break out).

Note: Although Thread.interrupted() seems the same as isInterrupted(), it has a nasty side effect: Calling interrupted() clears the interrupted flag, whereas calling isInterrupted() does not.

Other non-interrupting methods involve the use of "stop" (volatile) flags that the running Thread monitors.

Collection was modified; enumeration operation may not execute

Why this error?

In general .Net collections do not support being enumerated and modified at the same time. If you try to modify the collection list during enumeration, it raises an exception. So the issue behind this error is, we can not modify the list/dictionary while we are looping through the same.

One of the solutions

If we iterate a dictionary using a list of its keys, in parallel we can modify the dictionary object, as we are iterating through the key-collection and not the dictionary(and iterating its key collection).

Example

//get key collection from dictionary into a list to loop through
List<int> keys = new List<int>(Dictionary.Keys);

// iterating key collection using a simple for-each loop
foreach (int key in keys)
{
  // Now we can perform any modification with values of the dictionary.
  Dictionary[key] = Dictionary[key] - 1;
}

Here is a blog post about this solution.

And for a deep dive in StackOverflow: Why this error occurs?

Are these methods thread safe?

It follows the convention that static methods should be thread-safe, but actually in v2 that static api is a proxy to an instance method on a default instance: in the case protobuf-net, it internally minimises contention points, and synchronises the internal state when necessary. Basically the library goes out of its way to do things right so that you can have simple code.

Automating the InvokeRequired code pattern

I Kind of like to do it a bit different, i like to call "myself" if needed with an Action,

    private void AddRowToListView(ScannerRow row, bool suspend)
    {
        if (IsFormClosing)
            return;

        if (this.InvokeRequired)
        {
            var A = new Action(() => AddRowToListView(row, suspend));
            this.Invoke(A);
            return;
        }
         //as of here the Code is thread-safe

this is a handy pattern, the IsFormClosing is a field that i set to True when I am closing my form as there might be some background threads that are still running...

Is iterating ConcurrentHashMap values thread safe?

What does it mean?

That means that each iterator you obtain from a ConcurrentHashMap is designed to be used by a single thread and should not be passed around. This includes the syntactic sugar that the for-each loop provides.

What happens if I try to iterate the map with two threads at the same time?

It will work as expected if each of the threads uses it's own iterator.

What happens if I put or remove a value from the map while iterating it?

It is guaranteed that things will not break if you do this (that's part of what the "concurrent" in ConcurrentHashMap means). However, there is no guarantee that one thread will see the changes to the map that the other thread performs (without obtaining a new iterator from the map). The iterator is guaranteed to reflect the state of the map at the time of it's creation. Futher changes may be reflected in the iterator, but they do not have to be.

In conclusion, a statement like

for (Object o : someConcurrentHashMap.entrySet()) {
    // ...
}

will be fine (or at least safe) almost every time you see it.

Why is Java's SimpleDateFormat not thread-safe?

Here is the example which results in a strange error. Even Google gives no results:

public class ExampleClass {

private static final Pattern dateCreateP = Pattern.compile("???? ??????:\\s*(.+)");
private static final SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("HH:mm:ss dd.MM.yyyy");

public static void main(String[] args) {
    ExecutorService executor = Executors.newFixedThreadPool(100);
    while (true) {
        executor.submit(new Runnable() {
            @Override
            public void run() {
                workConcurrently();
            }
        });
    }
}

public static void workConcurrently() {
    Matcher matcher = dateCreateP.matcher("???? ??????: 19:30:55 03.05.2015");
    Timestamp startAdvDate = null;
    try {
        if (matcher.find()) {
            String dateCreate = matcher.group(1);
            startAdvDate = new Timestamp(sdf.parse(dateCreate).getTime());
        }
    } catch (Throwable th) {
        th.printStackTrace();
    }
    System.out.print("OK ");
}
}

And result :

apache server reached MaxClients setting, consider raising the MaxClients setting

Here's an approach that could resolve your problem, and if not would help with troubleshooting.

  1. Create a second Apache virtual server identical to the current one

  2. Send all "normal" user traffic to the original virtual server

  3. Send special or long-running traffic to the new virtual server

Special or long-running traffic could be report-generation, maintenance ops or anything else you don't expect to complete in <<1 second. This can happen serving APIs, not just web pages.

If your resource utilization is low but you still exceed MaxClients, the most likely answer is you have new connections arriving faster than they can be serviced. Putting any slow operations on a second virtual server will help prove if this is the case. Use the Apache access logs to quantify the effect.

Converting array to list in Java

If this helps: I've had the same problem and simply wrote a generic function that takes an array and returns an ArrayList of the same type with the same contents:

public static <T> ArrayList<T> ArrayToArrayList(T[] array) {
    ArrayList<T> list = new ArrayList<T>();
    for(T elmt : array) list.add(elmt);
    return list;
}

Convert java.util.Date to String

Here are examples of using new Java 8 Time API to format legacy java.util.Date:

    DateTimeFormatter formatter = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss:SSS Z")
        .withZone(ZoneOffset.UTC);
    String utcFormatted = formatter.format(date.toInstant());

    ZonedDateTime utcDatetime = date.toInstant().atZone(ZoneOffset.UTC);
    String utcFormatted2 = utcDatetime.format(DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss:SSS Z"));
    // gives the same as above

    ZonedDateTime localDatetime = date.toInstant().atZone(ZoneId.systemDefault());
    String localFormatted = localDatetime.format(DateTimeFormatter.ISO_ZONED_DATE_TIME);
    // 2011-12-03T10:15:30+01:00[Europe/Paris]

    String nowFormatted = LocalDateTime.now().toString(); // 2007-12-03T10:15:30.123

It is nice about DateTimeFormatter that it can be efficiently cached as it is thread-safe (unlike SimpleDateFormat).

Is it safe to use Project Lombok?

It sounds like you've already decided that Project Lombok gives you significant technical advantages for your proposed new project. (To be clear from the start, I have no particular views on Project Lombok, one way or the other.)

Before you use Project Lombok (or any other game-changing technology) in some project (open source or other wise), you need to make sure that the project stake holders agree to this. This includes the developers, and any important users (e.g. formal or informal sponsors).

You mention these potential issues:

Flamewars will erupt in the ##Java Freenode channel when I mention it,

Easy. Ignore / don't participate in the flamewars, or simply refrain from mentioning Lombok.

providing code snippets will confuse possible helpers,

If the project strategy is to use Lombok, then the possible helpers will need to get used to it.

people will complain about missing JavaDoc,

That is their problem. Nobody in their right mind tries to rigidly apply their organization's source code / documentation rules to third-party open source software. The project team should be free to set project source code / documentation standards that are appropriate to the technology being used.

(FOLLOWUP - The Lombok developers recognize that not generating javadoc comments for synthesized getter and setter methods is an issue. If this is a major problem for your project(s), then one alternative is to create and submit a Lombok patch to address this.)

and future commiters might just remove it all anyway.

That's not on! If the agreed project strategy is to use Lombok, then commiters who gratuitously de-Lombok the code should be chastised, and if necessary have their commit rights withdrawn.

Of course, this assumes that you've got buy-in from the stakeholders ... including the developers. And it assumes that you are prepared to argue your cause, and appropriately handle the inevitable dissenting voices.

The Multibyte extension can come in handy if you need control over the string charset.

$charset = 'UTF-8';
$length = 10;
$string = 'Hai to yoo! I like yoo soo!';
if(mb_strlen($string, $charset) > $length) {
  $string = mb_substr($string, 0, $length - 3, $charset) . '...';
}

Convert UTC to local time in Rails 3

Time#localtime will give you the time in the current time zone of the machine running the code:

> moment = Time.now.utc
  => 2011-03-14 15:15:58 UTC
> moment.localtime
  => 2011-03-14 08:15:58 -0700

Update: If you want to conver to specific time zones rather than your own timezone, you're on the right track. However, instead of worrying about EST vs EDT, just pass in the general Eastern Time zone -- it will know based on the day whether it is EDT or EST:

> Time.now.utc.in_time_zone("Eastern Time (US & Canada)")
  => Mon, 14 Mar 2011 11:21:05 EDT -04:00
> (Time.now.utc + 10.months).in_time_zone("Eastern Time (US & Canada)")
  => Sat, 14 Jan 2012 10:21:18 EST -05:00

PHP & MySQL: mysqli_num_rows() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given

The query either returned no rows or is erroneus, thus FALSE is returned. Change it to

if (!$dbc || mysqli_num_rows($dbc) == 0)

mysqli_num_rows:

Return Values

Returns TRUE on success or FALSE on failure. For SELECT, SHOW, DESCRIBE or EXPLAIN mysqli_query() will return a result object.

Does MS SQL Server's "between" include the range boundaries?

I've always used this:

WHERE myDate BETWEEN startDate AND (endDate+1)

CORS with POSTMAN

While all of the answers here are a really good explanation of what cors is but the direct answer to your question would be because of the following differences postman and browser.

Browser: Sends OPTIONS call to check the server type and getting the headers before sending any new request to the API endpoint. Where it checks for Access-Control-Allow-Origin. Taking this into account Access-Control-Allow-Origin header just specifies which all CROSS ORIGINS are allowed, although by default browser will only allow the same origin.

Postman: Sends direct GET, POST, PUT, DELETE etc. request without checking what type of server is and getting the header Access-Control-Allow-Origin by using OPTIONS call to the server.

boto3 client NoRegionError: You must specify a region error only sometimes

os.environ['AWS_DEFAULT_REGION'] = 'your_region_name'

In my case sensitivity mattered.

What is a "slug" in Django?

If I may provide some historical context :

The term "slug" has to do with casting metal—lead, in this case—out of which the press fonts were made. Every paper then had its fonts factory regularly re-melted and recast in fresh molds, since after many prints they became worn out. Apprentices like me started their career there, and went all the way to the top (not anymore).

Typographs had to compose the text of an article in a backward manner with lead characters stacked in a wise. So at printing time the letters would be straight on the paper. All typographs could read the newspaper mirrored as fast as the printed one. Therefore the slugs, (like snails) also the slow stories (the last to be fixed) were many on the bench waiting, solely identified by their fist letters, mostly the whole title generally more readable. Some "hot" news were waiting there on the bench, for possible last minute correction, (Evening paper) before last assembly and definitive printing.

Django emerged from the offices of the Lawrence journal in Kansas. Where probably some printing jargon still lingers. A-django-enthusiast-&-friendly-old-slug-boy-from-France.

calculating execution time in c++

I have used the technique said above, still I found that the time given in the Code:Blocks IDE was more or less similar to the result obtained-(may be it will differ by little micro seconds)..

is of a type that is invalid for use as a key column in an index

Noting klaisbyskov's comment about your key length needing to be gigabytes in size, and assuming that you do in fact need this, then I think your only options are:

  1. use a hash of the key value
    • Create a column on nchar(40) (for a sha1 hash, for example),
    • put a unique key on the hash column.
    • generate the hash when saving or updating the record
  2. triggers to query the table for an existing match on insert or update.

Hashing comes with the caveat that one day, you might get a collision.

Triggers will scan the entire table.

Over to you...

Can an XSLT insert the current date?

format-date(current-date(), '[M01]/[D01]/[Y0001]') = 09/19/2013

Write a file in external storage in Android

To write into external storage in Lollipop+ devices we need:

  1. Add the following permission into Manifest:

           <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE" />

  2. Request an approval from the user:

           public static final int REQUEST_WRITE_STORAGE = 112;

           private requestPermission(Activity context) {
               boolean hasPermission = (ContextCompat.checkSelfPermission(context, Manifest.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE) == PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED);
               if (!hasPermission) {
                  ActivityCompat.requestPermissions(context,
                     new String[]{Manifest.permission.WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE},
                   REQUEST_WRITE_STORAGE);
               } else {
                 // You are allowed to write external storage:
                 String path = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath() + "/new_folder";
                 File storageDir = new File(path);
                 if (!storageDir.exists() && !storageDir.mkdirs()) {
                   // This should never happen - log handled exception!
                 }
               }

  3. Handle the user response inside Activity:

    @Override
    public void onRequestPermissionsResult(int requestCode, String[] permissions, int[] grantResults) {
         super.onRequestPermissionsResult(requestCode, permissions, grantResults);

         switch (requestCode)
         {
          case Preferences.REQUEST_WRITE_STORAGE: {
             if (grantResults.length > 0 && grantResults[0] ==  PackageManager.PERMISSION_GRANTED) {
               Toast.makeText(this, "The app was allowed to write to your storage!", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
               // Reload the activity with permission granted or use the features what required the permission
             } else {
               Toast.makeText(this, "The app was not allowed to write to your storage. Hence, it cannot function properly. Please consider granting it this permission", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
            }
         }
     }

How to get the ASCII value of a character

Note that ord() doesn't give you the ASCII value per se; it gives you the numeric value of the character in whatever encoding it's in. Therefore the result of ord('ä') can be 228 if you're using Latin-1, or it can raise a TypeError if you're using UTF-8. It can even return the Unicode codepoint instead if you pass it a unicode:

>>> ord(u'?')
12354

Why an inline "background-image" style doesn't work in Chrome 10 and Internet Explorer 8?

Chrome 11 spits out the following in its debugger:

[Error] GET http://www.mypicx.com/images/logo.jpg undefined (undefined)

It looks like that hosting service is using some funky dynamic system that is preventing these browsers from fetching it correctly. (Instead it tries to fetch the default base image, which is problematically a jpeg.) Could you just upload another copy of the image elsewhere? I would expect it to be the easiest solution by a long mile.

Edit: See what happens in Chrome when you place the image using normal <img> tags ;)

How to edit a JavaScript alert box title?

Override the javascript window.alert() function.

window.alert = function(title, message){
    var myElementToShow = document.getElementById("someElementId");
    myElementToShow.innerHTML = title + "</br>" + message;
}

With this you can create your own alert() function. Create a new 'cool' looking dialog (from some div elements).

Tested working in chrome and webkit, not sure of others.

Return datetime object of previous month

You could do it in two lines like this:

now = datetime.now()
last_month = datetime(now.year, now.month - 1, now.day)

remember the imports

from datetime import datetime

  1. this is just simple here i'm appending html table into a div at the end
  2. we can achieve this or any thing with a simple concept of calling a JavaScript function when we want (here on drop.)
  3. In this example you can drag & drop any number of tables, new table will be added below the last table exists in the div other wise it will be the first table in the div.
  4. here we can add text between tables or we can say the section where we drop tables is editable we can type text between tables. enter image description here

Find value in an array

You can go for array methods.

To see all array methods use methods function with array. For Example,

a = ["name", "surname"]
a.methods

By the way you can use different method for checking value in array You can use a.include?("name").

How to add image in a TextView text?

I tried many different solutions and this for me was the best:

SpannableStringBuilder ssb = new SpannableStringBuilder(" Hello world!");
ssb.setSpan(new ImageSpan(context, R.drawable.image), 0, 1, Spannable.SPAN_INCLUSIVE_INCLUSIVE);
tv_text.setText(ssb, TextView.BufferType.SPANNABLE);

This code uses a minimum of memory.

Iterate through the fields of a struct in Go

After you've retrieved the reflect.Value of the field by using Field(i) you can get a interface value from it by calling Interface(). Said interface value then represents the value of the field.

There is no function to convert the value of the field to a concrete type as there are, as you may know, no generics in go. Thus, there is no function with the signature GetValue() T with T being the type of that field (which changes of course, depending on the field).

The closest you can achieve in go is GetValue() interface{} and this is exactly what reflect.Value.Interface() offers.

The following code illustrates how to get the values of each exported field in a struct using reflection (play):

import (
    "fmt"
    "reflect"
)

func main() {
    x := struct{Foo string; Bar int }{"foo", 2}

    v := reflect.ValueOf(x)

    values := make([]interface{}, v.NumField())

    for i := 0; i < v.NumField(); i++ {
        values[i] = v.Field(i).Interface()
    }

    fmt.Println(values)
}

How Long Does it Take to Learn Java for a Complete Newbie?

The main problem you're having is that you're learning programming for the first time with Java and I think Java isn't the best language to start.

I suppose that you're addressing a work project, Is this the case? That pressure might make things worse. Depending on how complex the project is you might success but learning Java in 10 weeks without background knowledge is another issue.

Joining pairs of elements of a list

Without building temporary lists:

>>> import itertools
>>> s = 'abcdefgh'
>>> si = iter(s)
>>> [''.join(each) for each in itertools.izip(si, si)]
['ab', 'cd', 'ef', 'gh']

or:

>>> import itertools
>>> s = 'abcdefgh'
>>> si = iter(s)
>>> map(''.join, itertools.izip(si, si))
['ab', 'cd', 'ef', 'gh']

How can I get dictionary key as variable directly in Python (not by searching from value)?

You could simply use * which unpacks the dictionary keys. Example:

d = {'x': 1, 'y': 2}
t = (*d,)
print(t) # ('x', 'y')

                                                                    '{', ''),
                                                                                                        '}', ''),

                                                                                    ':', ''),

How to initialize a nested struct?

Define your Proxy struct separately, outside of Configuration, like this:

type Proxy struct {
    Address string
    Port    string
}

type Configuration struct {
    Val string
    P   Proxy
}

c := &Configuration{
    Val: "test",
    P: Proxy{
        Address: "addr",
        Port:    "80",
    },
}

Average of multiple columns

This works in MariaDB:

SELECT Req_ID, (R1+R2+R3+R4+R5)/5 AS Average
FROM Request
GROUP BY Req_ID;

DateTime "null" value

If you are, sometimes, expecting null you could use something like this:

var orderResults = Repository.GetOrders(id, (DateTime?)model.DateFrom, (DateTime?)model.DateTo)

In your repository use null-able datetime.

public Orders[] GetOrders(string id, DateTime? dateFrom, DateTime? dateTo){...}

Guzzle 6: no more json() method for responses

Adding ->getContents() doesn't return jSON response, instead it returns as text.

You can simply use json_decode

How to send FormData objects with Ajax-requests in jQuery?

If you want to submit files using ajax use "jquery.form.js" This submits all form elements easily.

Samples http://jquery.malsup.com/form/#ajaxSubmit

rough view :

<form id='AddPhotoForm' method='post' action='../photo/admin_save_photo.php' enctype='multipart/form-data'>

<script type="text/javascript">
function showResponseAfterAddPhoto(responseText, statusText)
{
    information= responseText;
    callAjaxtolist();
    $("#AddPhotoForm").resetForm();
    $("#photo_msg").html('<div class="album_msg">Photo uploaded Successfully...</div>');
};

$(document).ready(function(){
    $('.add_new_photo_div').live('click',function(){
            var options = {success:showResponseAfterAddPhoto};
            $("#AddPhotoForm").ajaxSubmit(options);
        });
});
</script>

How to redirect to a different domain using NGINX?

If you would like to redirect requests for "domain1.com" to "domain2.com", you could create a server block that looks like this:

server {
    listen 80;
    server_name domain1.com;
    return 301 $scheme://domain2.com$request_uri;
}

Nginx upstream prematurely closed connection while reading response header from upstream, for large requests

I ran into this issue as well and found this post. Ultimately none of these answers solved my problem, instead I had to put in a rewrite rule to strip out the location /rt as the backend my developers made was not expecting any additional paths:

+-(william@wkstn18)--(Thu, 05 Nov 20)-+
+-(~)--(16:13)->wscat -c ws://WebsocketServerHostname/rt
error: Unexpected server response: 502

Testing with wscat repeatedly gave a 502 response. Nginx error logs provided the same upstream error as above, but notice the upstream string shows the GET Request is attempting to access localhost:12775/rt and not localhost:12775:

 2020/11/05 22:13:32 [error] 10175#10175: *7 upstream prematurely closed
 connection while reading response header from upstream, client: WANIP,
 server: WebsocketServerHostname, request: "GET /rt/socket.io/?transport=websocket
 HTTP/1.1", upstream: "http://127.0.0.1:12775/rt/socket.io/?transport=websocket",
 host: "WebsocketServerHostname"

Since the devs had not coded their websocket (listening on 12775) to expect /rt/socket.io but instead just /socket.io/ (NOTE: /socket.io/ appears to just be a way to specify websocket transport discussed here). Because of this, rather than ask them to rewrite their socket code I just put in a rewrite rule to translate WebsocketServerHostname/rt to WebsocketServerHostname:12775 as below:

upstream websocket-rt {
        ip_hash;

        server 127.0.0.1:12775;
}

server {
        listen 80;
        server_name     WebsocketServerHostname;

        location /rt {
                proxy_http_version 1.1;

                #rewrite /rt/ out of all requests and proxy_pass to 12775
                rewrite /rt/(.*) /$1  break;

                proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;
                proxy_set_header Host $host;

                proxy_pass http://websocket-rt;
                proxy_set_header Upgrade $http_upgrade;
                proxy_set_header Connection $connection_upgrade;
        }

}

Converting byte array to string in javascript

Too late to answer but if your input is in form of ASCII bytes, then you could try this solution:

function convertArrToString(rArr){
 //Step 1: Convert each element to character
 let tmpArr = new Array();
 rArr.forEach(function(element,index){
    tmpArr.push(String.fromCharCode(element));
});
//Step 2: Return the string by joining the elements
return(tmpArr.join(""));
}

function convertArrToHexNumber(rArr){
  return(parseInt(convertArrToString(rArr),16));
}

Rename a dictionary key

I am using @wim 's answer above, with dict.pop() when renaming keys, but I found a gotcha. Cycling through the dict to change the keys, without separating the list of old keys completely from the dict instance, resulted in cycling new, changed keys into the loop, and missing some existing keys.

To start with, I did it this way:

for current_key in my_dict:
    new_key = current_key.replace(':','_')
    fixed_metadata[new_key] = fixed_metadata.pop(current_key)

I found that cycling through the dict in this way, the dictionary kept finding keys even when it shouldn't, i.e., the new keys, the ones I had changed! I needed to separate the instances completely from each other to (a) avoid finding my own changed keys in the for loop, and (b) find some keys that were not being found within the loop for some reason.

I am doing this now:

current_keys = list(my_dict.keys())
for current_key in current_keys:
    and so on...

Converting the my_dict.keys() to a list was necessary to get free of the reference to the changing dict. Just using my_dict.keys() kept me tied to the original instance, with the strange side effects.

Evaluate a string with a switch in C++

You can't. Full stop.

switch is only for integral types, if you want to branch depending on a string you need to use if/else.

Click outside menu to close in jquery

The answer is right, but it will add a listener that will be triggered every time a click occurs on your page. To avoid that, you can add the listener for just one time :

$('a#menu-link').on('click', function(e) {
    e.preventDefault();
    e.stopPropagation();

    $('#menu').toggleClass('open');

    $(document).one('click', function closeMenu (e){
        if($('#menu').has(e.target).length === 0){
            $('#menu').removeClass('open');
        } else {
            $(document).one('click', closeMenu);
        }
    });
});

Edit: if you want to avoid the stopPropagation() on the initial button you can use this

var $menu = $('#menu');

$('a#menu-link').on('click', function(e) {
    e.preventDefault();

    if (!$menu.hasClass('active')) {
        $menu.addClass('active');

        $(document).one('click', function closeTooltip(e) {
            if ($menu.has(e.target).length === 0 && $('a#menu-link').has(e.target).length === 0) {
                $menu.removeClass('active');
            } else if ($menu.hasClass('active')) {
                $(document).one('click', closeTooltip);
            }
        });
    } else {
        $menu.removeClass('active');
    }
});

How to escape braces (curly brackets) in a format string in .NET

Almost there! The escape sequence for a brace is {{ or }} so for your example you would use:

string t = "1, 2, 3";
string v = String.Format(" foo {{{0}}}", t);

Custom style to jquery ui dialogs

See http://jsfiddle.net/qP8DY/24/

You can add a class (such as "success-dialog" in my example) to div#success, either directly in your HTML, or in your JavaScript by adding to the dialogClass option, as I've done.

$('#success').dialog({
    height: 50,
    width: 350,
    modal: true,
    resizable: true,
    dialogClass: 'no-close success-dialog'
});

Then just add the success-dialog class to your CSS rules as appropriate. To indicate an element with two (or more) classes applied to it, just write them all together, with no spaces in between. For example:

.ui-dialog.success-dialog {
    font-family: Verdana,Arial,sans-serif;
    font-size: .8em;
}

SoapFault exception: Could not connect to host

I finally found the reason,its becuse of the library can't find a CA bundle on your system. PHP >= v5.6 automatically sets verify_peer to true by default. However, not all systems have a known CA bundle on disk .

You can try one of these procedures:

1.If you have a CA file on your system, set openssl.cafile or curl.cainfo in your php.ini to the path of your CA file.

2.Manually specify your SSL CA file location

curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, true);
curl_setopt($cHandler, CURLOPT_CAINFO, $path-of-your-ca-file);

3.disabled verify_peer

curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_SSL_VERIFYPEER, false);

Call to undefined function mysql_connect

Since mysql_connect This extension was deprecated in PHP 5.5.0, and it was removed in PHP 7.0.0. Instead, the MySQLi or PDO_MySQL extension should be used. by default xampp does not load it automatically

in your php.ini file you should uncomment

;; extension=php_mysql.dll

to

extension=php_mysql.dll

Then restart your apache you should be fine

Running interactive commands in Paramiko

The full paramiko distribution ships with a lot of good demos.

In the demos subdirectory, demo.py and interactive.py have full interactive TTY examples which would probably be overkill for your situation.

In your example above ssh_stdin acts like a standard Python file object, so ssh_stdin.write should work so long as the channel is still open.

I've never needed to write to stdin, but the docs suggest that a channel is closed as soon as a command exits, so using the standard stdin.write method to send a password up probably won't work. There are lower level paramiko commands on the channel itself that give you more control - see how the SSHClient.exec_command method is implemented for all the gory details.

To check if string contains particular word

Solution-1: - If you want to search for a combination of characters or an independent word from a sentence.

String sentence = "In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful."
if (sentence.matches(".*Beneficent.*")) {return true;}
else{return false;}

Solution-2: - There is another possibility you want to search for an independent word from a sentence then Solution-1 will also return true if you searched a word exists in any other word. For example, If you will search cent from a sentence containing this word ** Beneficent** then Solution-1 will return true. For this remember to add space in your regular expression.

String sentence = "In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful."
if (sentence.matches(".* cent .*")) {return true;}
else{return false;}

Now in Solution-2 it wll return false because no independent cent word exist.

Additional: You can add or remove space on either side in 2nd solution according to your requirements.

Connect Android to WiFi Enterprise network EAP(PEAP)

Finally, I've defeated my CiSCO EAP-FAST corporate wifi network, and all our Android devices are now able to connect to it.

The walk-around I've performed in order to gain access to this kind of networks from an Android device are easiest than you can imagine.

There's a Wifi Config Editor in the Google Play Store you can use to "activate" the secondary CISCO Protocols when you are setting up a EAP wifi connection.

Its name is Wifi Config Advanced Editor.

  • First, you have to setup your wireless network manually as close as you can to your "official" corporate wifi parameters.

  • Save it.

  • Go to the WCE and edit the parameters of the network you have created in the previous step.

  • There are 3 or 4 series of settings you should activate in order to force the Android device to use them as a way to connect (the main site I think you want to visit is Enterprise Configuration, but don't forget to check all the parameters to change them if needed.
    As a suggestion, even if you have a WPA2 EAP-FAST Cipher, try LEAP in your setup. It worked for me as a charm.

  • When you finished to edit the config, go to the main Android wifi controller, and force to connect to this network.

  • Do not Edit the network again with the Android wifi interface.

I have tested it on Samsung Galaxy 1 and 2, Note mobile devices, and on a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet.

Using group by on multiple columns

Here I am going to explain not only the GROUP clause use, but also the Aggregate functions use.

The GROUP BY clause is used in conjunction with the aggregate functions to group the result-set by one or more columns. e.g.:

-- GROUP BY with one parameter:
SELECT column_name, AGGREGATE_FUNCTION(column_name)
FROM table_name
WHERE column_name operator value
GROUP BY column_name;

-- GROUP BY with two parameters:
SELECT
    column_name1,
    column_name2,
    AGGREGATE_FUNCTION(column_name3)
FROM
    table_name
GROUP BY
    column_name1,
    column_name2;

Remember this order:

  1. SELECT (is used to select data from a database)

  2. FROM (clause is used to list the tables)

  3. WHERE (clause is used to filter records)

  4. GROUP BY (clause can be used in a SELECT statement to collect data across multiple records and group the results by one or more columns)

  5. HAVING (clause is used in combination with the GROUP BY clause to restrict the groups of returned rows to only those whose the condition is TRUE)

  6. ORDER BY (keyword is used to sort the result-set)

You can use all of these if you are using aggregate functions, and this is the order that they must be set, otherwise you can get an error.

Aggregate Functions are:

MIN() returns the smallest value in a given column

MAX() returns the maximum value in a given column.

SUM() returns the sum of the numeric values in a given column

AVG() returns the average value of a given column

COUNT() returns the total number of values in a given column

COUNT(*) returns the number of rows in a table

SQL script examples about using aggregate functions:

Let's say we need to find the sale orders whose total sale is greater than $950. We combine the HAVING clause and the GROUP BY clause to accomplish this:

SELECT
    orderId, SUM(unitPrice * qty) Total
FROM
    OrderDetails
GROUP BY orderId
HAVING Total > 950;

Counting all orders and grouping them customerID and sorting the result ascendant. We combine the COUNT function and the GROUP BY, ORDER BY clauses and ASC:

SELECT
    customerId, COUNT(*)
FROM
    Orders
GROUP BY customerId
ORDER BY COUNT(*) ASC;

Retrieve the category that has an average Unit Price greater than $10, using AVG function combine with GROUP BY and HAVING clauses:

SELECT
    categoryName, AVG(unitPrice)
FROM
    Products p
INNER JOIN
    Categories c ON c.categoryId = p.categoryId
GROUP BY categoryName
HAVING AVG(unitPrice) > 10;

Getting the less expensive product by each category, using the MIN function in a subquery:

SELECT categoryId,
       productId,
       productName,
       unitPrice
FROM Products p1
WHERE unitPrice = (
                SELECT MIN(unitPrice)
                FROM Products p2
                WHERE p2.categoryId = p1.categoryId)

The following statement groups rows with the same values in both categoryId and productId columns:

SELECT
    categoryId, categoryName, productId, SUM(unitPrice)
FROM
    Products p
INNER JOIN
    Categories c ON c.categoryId = p.categoryId
GROUP BY categoryId, productId

TypeError: only length-1 arrays can be converted to Python scalars while plot showing

Take note of what is printed for x. You are trying to convert an array (basically just a list) into an int. length-1 would be an array of a single number, which I assume numpy just treats as a float. You could do this, but it's not a purely-numpy solution.

EDIT: I was involved in a post a couple of weeks back where numpy was slower an operation than I had expected and I realised I had fallen into a default mindset that numpy was always the way to go for speed. Since my answer was not as clean as ayhan's, I thought I'd use this space to show that this is another such instance to illustrate that vectorize is around 10% slower than building a list in Python. I don't know enough about numpy to explain why this is the case but perhaps someone else does?

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import datetime

time_start = datetime.datetime.now()

# My original answer
def f(x):
    rebuilt_to_plot = []
    for num in x:
        rebuilt_to_plot.append(np.int(num))
    return rebuilt_to_plot

for t in range(10000):
    x = np.arange(1, 15.1, 0.1)
    plt.plot(x, f(x))

time_end = datetime.datetime.now()

# Answer by ayhan
def f_1(x):
    return np.int(x)

for t in range(10000):
    f2 = np.vectorize(f_1)
    x = np.arange(1, 15.1, 0.1)
    plt.plot(x, f2(x))

time_end_2 = datetime.datetime.now()

print time_end - time_start
print time_end_2 - time_end

What's in an Eclipse .classpath/.project file?

Eclipse is a runtime environment for plugins. Virtually everything you see in Eclipse is the result of plugins installed on Eclipse, rather than Eclipse itself.

The .project file is maintained by the core Eclipse platform, and its goal is to describe the project from a generic, plugin-independent Eclipse view. What's the project's name? what other projects in the workspace does it refer to? What are the builders that are used in order to build the project? (remember, the concept of "build" doesn't pertain specifically to Java projects, but also to other types of projects)

The .classpath file is maintained by Eclipse's JDT feature (feature = set of plugins). JDT holds multiple such "meta" files in the project (see the .settings directory inside the project); the .classpath file is just one of them. Specifically, the .classpath file contains information that the JDT feature needs in order to properly compile the project: the project's source folders (that is, what to compile); the output folders (where to compile to); and classpath entries (such as other projects in the workspace, arbitrary JAR files on the file system, and so forth).

Blindly copying such files from one machine to another may be risky. For example, if arbitrary JAR files are placed on the classpath (that is, JAR files that are located outside the workspace and are referred-to by absolute path naming), the .classpath file is rendered non-portable and must be modified in order to be portable. There are certain best practices that can be followed to guarantee .classpath file portability.

Error using eclipse for Android - No resource found that matches the given name

I think the issue is that you have

android:prompt="@string/level_array"

and you don't have any string with the id, to refer to the array, you need to use @array

test this or put a screen of your log please

How to extract a substring using regex

as in javascript:

mydata.match(/'([^']+)'/)[1]

the actual regexp is: /'([^']+)'/

if you use the non greedy modifier (as per another post) it's like this:

mydata.match(/'(.*?)'/)[1]

it is cleaner.

best OCR (Optical character recognition) example in android

Like you I also faced many problems implementing OCR in Android, but after much Googling I found the solution, and it surely is the best example of OCR.

Let me explain using step-by-step guidance.

First, download the source code from https://github.com/rmtheis/tess-two.

Import all three projects. After importing you will get an error. To solve the error you have to create a res folder in the tess-two project

enter image description here

First, just create res folder in tess-two by tess-two->RightClick->new Folder->Name it "res"

After doing this in all three project the error should be gone.

Now download the source code from https://github.com/rmtheis/android-ocr, here you will get best example.

Now you just need to import it into your workspace, but first you have to download android-ndk from this site:

http://developer.android.com/tools/sdk/ndk/index.html i have windows 7 - 32 bit PC so I have download http://dl.google.com/android/ndk/android-ndk-r9-windows-x86.zip this file

Now extract it suppose I have extract it into E:\Software\android-ndk-r9 so I will set this path on Environment Variable

Right Click on MyComputer->Property->Advance-System-Settings->Advance->Environment Variable-> find PATH on second below Box and set like path like below picture

enter image description here

done it

Now open cmd and go to on D:\Android Workspace\tess-two like below

enter image description here

If you have successfully set up environment variable of NDK then just type ndk-build just like above picture than enter you will not get any kind of error and all file will be compiled successfully:

Now download other source code also from https://github.com/rmtheis/tess-two , and extract and import it and give it name OCRTest, like in my PC which is in D:\Android Workspace\OCRTest

enter image description here

Import test-two in this and run OCRTest and run it; you will get the best example of OCR.

How to convert a String into an ArrayList?

Option1:

List<String> list = Arrays.asList("hello");

Option2:

List<String> list = new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList("hello"));

In my opinion, Option1 is better because

  1. we can reduce the number of ArrayList objects being created from 2 to 1. asList method creates and returns an ArrayList Object.
  2. its performance is much better (but it returns a fixed-size list).

Please refer to the documentation here

ALTER TABLE ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS in SQLite

I come up with this query

SELECT CASE (SELECT count(*) FROM pragma_table_info(''product'') c WHERE c.name = ''purchaseCopy'') WHEN 0 THEN ALTER TABLE product ADD purchaseCopy BLOB END
  • Inner query will return 0 or 1 if column exists.
  • Based on the result, alter the column

What is causing the error `string.split is not a function`?

document.location isn't a string.

You're probably wanting to use document.location.href or document.location.pathname instead.

Bootstrap - How to add a logo to navbar class?

I would suggest you to use either an image or text. So, Remove the text and add it in your image(using Photoshop, maybe). Then, Use a width and height 100% for the image. it will do the trick. because the image can be resized based on the container. But, you have to manually resize the text. If you can provide the fiddle, I can help you achieve this.

Exclude Blank and NA in R

A good idea is to set all of the "" (blank cells) to NA before any further analysis.

If you are reading your input from a file, it is a good choice to cast all "" to NAs:

foo <- read.table(file="Your_file.txt", na.strings=c("", "NA"), sep="\t") # if your file is tab delimited

If you have already your table loaded, you can act as follows:

foo[foo==""] <- NA

Then to keep only rows with no NA you may just use na.omit():

foo <- na.omit(foo)

Or to keep columns with no NA:

foo <- foo[, colSums(is.na(foo)) == 0]

Jenkins, specifying JAVA_HOME

On CentOS 6.x and Redhat 6.x systems, the openjdk-devel package contains the jdk. It's sensible enough if you are familiar with the -devel pattern used in RedHat, but confusing if you're looking for a jdk package that conforms to java naming standards.

How to open a new form from another form

You need to control the opening of sub forms from a main form.

In my case I'm opening a Login window first before I launch my form1. I control everything from Program.cs. Set up a validation flag in Program.cs. Open Login window from Program.cs. Control then goes to login window. Then if the validation is good, set the validation flag to true from the login window. Now you can safely close the login window. Control returns to Program.cs. If the validation flag is true, open form1. If the validation flag is false, your application will close.

In Program.cs:

   static class Program
    {
        /// <summary>
        /// The main entry point for the application.
        /// </summary>
        ///

        //Validation flag
        public static bool ValidLogin = false;

        [STAThread]
        static void Main()
        {
            Application.EnableVisualStyles();
            Application.SetCompatibleTextRenderingDefault(false);

            Application.Run(new Login());

            if (ValidLogin)
            {
                Application.Run(new Form1());
            }
        }

    }

In Login.cs:

       private void btnOK_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            if (txtUsername.Text == "x" && txtPassword.Text == "x")
            {
                Program.ValidLogin = true;
                this.Close();
            }
            else
            {
                MessageBox.Show("Username or Password are incorrect.");
            }
        }

        private void btnExit_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            Application.Exit();
        }

Unit testing with Spring Security

I would take a look at Spring's abstract test classes and mock objects which are talked about here. They provide a powerful way of auto-wiring your Spring managed objects making unit and integration testing easier.

How Can I Set the Default Value of a Timestamp Column to the Current Timestamp with Laravel Migrations?

As additional possibility for future googlers

I find it more useful to have null in the updated_at column when the record is been created but has never been modified. It reduces the db size (ok, just a little) and its possible to see it at the first sight that the data has never been modified.

As of this I use:

$table->timestamp('created_at')->useCurrent();
$table->timestamp('updated_at')->default(DB::raw('NULL ON UPDATE CURRENT_TIMESTAMP'))->nullable();

(In Laravel 7 with mysql 8).

Where to find free public Web Services?

How do I serialize a C# anonymous type to a JSON string?

Please note this is from 2008. Today I would argue that the serializer should be built in and that you can probably use swagger + attributes to inform consumers about your endpoint and return data.

Iwould argue that you shouldn't be serializing an anonymous type. I know the temptation here; you want to quickly generate some throw-away types that are just going to be used in a loosely type environment aka Javascript in the browser. Still, I would create an actual type and decorate it as Serializable. Then you can strongly type your web methods. While this doesn't matter one iota for Javascript, it does add some self-documentation to the method. Any reasonably experienced programmer will be able to look at the function signature and say, "Oh, this is type Foo! I know how that should look in JSON."

Having said that, you might try JSON.Net to do the serialization. I have no idea if it will work

XAMPP, Apache - Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly

I followed @user2314737's advice (his answer is on page 1) and enabled "Show debug information" under "Config" that after a restart of xampp showed me that my install path had a space " " in it which wasn't allowed.

My path was D:\Program files (x86)\xampp\ so I reinstalled it to D:\xampp\ and then it worked.

Transpose a range in VBA

First copy the source range then paste-special on target range with Transpose:=True, short sample:

Option Explicit

Sub test()
  Dim sourceRange As Range
  Dim targetRange As Range

  Set sourceRange = ActiveSheet.Range(Cells(1, 1), Cells(5, 1))
  Set targetRange = ActiveSheet.Cells(6, 1)

  sourceRange.Copy
  targetRange.PasteSpecial Paste:=xlPasteValues, Operation:=xlNone, SkipBlanks:=False, Transpose:=True
End Sub

The Transpose function takes parameter of type Varaiant and returns Variant.

  Sub transposeTest()
    Dim transposedVariant As Variant
    Dim sourceRowRange As Range
    Dim sourceRowRangeVariant As Variant

    Set sourceRowRange = Range("A1:H1") ' one row, eight columns
    sourceRowRangeVariant = sourceRowRange.Value
    transposedVariant = Application.Transpose(sourceRowRangeVariant)

    Dim rangeFilledWithTransposedData As Range
    Set rangeFilledWithTransposedData = Range("I1:I8") ' eight rows, one column
    rangeFilledWithTransposedData.Value = transposedVariant
  End Sub

I will try to explaine the purpose of 'calling transpose twice'. If u have row data in Excel e.g. "a1:h1" then the Range("a1:h1").Value is a 2D Variant-Array with dimmensions 1 to 1, 1 to 8. When u call Transpose(Range("a1:h1").Value) then u get transposed 2D Variant Array with dimensions 1 to 8, 1 to 1. And if u call Transpose(Transpose(Range("a1:h1").Value)) u get 1D Variant Array with dimension 1 to 8.

First Transpose changes row to column and second transpose changes the column back to row but with just one dimension.

If the source range would have more rows (columns) e.g. "a1:h3" then Transpose function just changes the dimensions like this: 1 to 3, 1 to 8 Transposes to 1 to 8, 1 to 3 and vice versa.

Hope i did not confuse u, my english is bad, sorry :-).

How to change value of process.env.PORT in node.js?

EDIT: Per @sshow's comment, if you're trying to run your node app on port 80, the below is not the best way to do it. Here's a better answer: How do I run Node.js on port 80?

Original Answer:

If you want to do this to run on port 80 (or want to set the env variable more permanently),

  1. Open up your bash profile vim ~/.bash_profile
  2. Add the environment variable to the file export PORT=80
  3. Open up the sudoers config file sudo visudo
  4. Add the following line to the file exactly as so Defaults env_keep +="PORT"

Now when you run sudo node app.js it should work as desired.

Is there an equivalent to the SUBSTRING function in MS Access SQL?

I have worked alot with msaccess vba. I think you are looking for MID function

example

    dim myReturn as string
    myreturn = mid("bonjour tout le monde",9,4)

will give you back the value "tout"

What is the difference between a URI, a URL and a URN?

In summary: a URI identifies, a URL identifies and locates.

Consider a specific edition of Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, of which you have a digital copy on your home network.

You could identify the text as urn:isbn:0-486-27557-4.
That would be a URI, but more specifically a URN* because it names the text.

You could also identify the text as file://hostname/sharename/RomeoAndJuliet.pdf.
That would also be a URI, but more specifically a URL because it locates the text.

*Uniform Resource Name

(Note that my example is adapted from Wikipedia)

What can <f:metadata>, <f:viewParam> and <f:viewAction> be used for?

Send params from View to an other View, from Sender View to Receiver View use viewParam and includeViewParams=true

In Sender

  1. Declare params to be sent. We can send String, Object,…

Sender.xhtml

<f:metadata>
      <f:viewParam name="ID" value="#{senderMB._strID}" />
</f:metadata>
  1. We’re going send param ID, it will be included with “includeViewParams=true” in return String of click button event Click button fire senderMB.clickBtnDetail(dto) with dto from senderMB._arrData

Sender.xhtml

<p:dataTable rowIndexVar="index" id="dataTale"value="#{senderMB._arrData}" var="dto">
      <p:commandButton action="#{senderMB.clickBtnDetail(dto)}" value="??"
      ajax="false"/>
</p:dataTable>

In senderMB.clickBtnDetail(dto) we assign _strID with argument we got from button event (dto), here this is Sender_DTO and assign to senderMB._strID

Sender_MB.java
    public String clickBtnDetail(sender_DTO sender_dto) {
        this._strID = sender_dto.getStrID();
        return "Receiver?faces-redirect=true&includeViewParams=true";
    }

The link when clicked will become http://localhost:8080/my_project/view/Receiver.xhtml?*ID=12345*

In Recever

  1. Get viewParam Receiver.xhtml In Receiver we declare f:viewParam to get param from get request (receive), the name of param of receiver must be the same with sender (page)

Receiver.xhtml

<f:metadata><f:viewParam name="ID" value="#{receiver_MB._strID}"/></f:metadata>

It will get param ID from sender View and assign to receiver_MB._strID

  1. Use viewParam In Receiver, we want to use this param in sql query before the page render, so that we use preRenderView event. We are not going to use constructor because constructor will be invoked before viewParam is received So that we add

Receiver.xhtml

<f:event listener="#{receiver_MB.preRenderView}" type="preRenderView" />

into f:metadata tag

Receiver.xhtml

<f:metadata>
<f:viewParam name="ID" value="#{receiver_MB._strID}" />
<f:event listener="#{receiver_MB.preRenderView}"
            type="preRenderView" />
</f:metadata>

Now we want to use this param in our read database method, it is available to use

Receiver_MB.java
public void preRenderView(ComponentSystemEvent event) throws Exception {
        if (FacesContext.getCurrentInstance().isPostback()) {
            return;
        }
        readFromDatabase();
    }
private void readFromDatabase() {
//use _strID to read and set property
}

Can I change the color of Font Awesome's icon color?

You can specify the color in the style attribute:

<a href="/users/edit"><i class="icon-cog" style="color:black"></i> Edit profile</a>

Plotting images side by side using matplotlib

One thing that I found quite helpful to use to print all images :

_, axs = plt.subplots(n_row, n_col, figsize=(12, 12))
axs = axs.flatten()
for img, ax in zip(imgs, axs):
    ax.imshow(img)
plt.show()

How do I implement JQuery.noConflict() ?

If you look at the examples on the api page there is this: Example: Creates a different alias instead of jQuery to use in the rest of the script.

var j = jQuery.noConflict();
// Do something with jQuery
j("div p").hide();
// Do something with another library's $()
$("content").style.display = 'none';

Put the var j = jQuery.noConflict() after you bring in jquery and then bring in the conflicting scripts. You can then use the j in place of $ for all your jquery needs and use the $ for the other script.

C++: How to round a double to an int?

It is worth noting that what you're doing isn't rounding, it's casting. Casting using (int) x truncates the decimal value of x. As in your example, if x = 3.9995, the .9995 gets truncated and x = 3.

As proposed by many others, one solution is to add 0.5 to x, and then cast.

PG::ConnectionBad - could not connect to server: Connection refused

I had the same problem, this explanation solved it for me: http://blog.55minutes.com/2013/09/postgresql-93-brew-upgrade/

key step was looking at the tail of my /usr/local/var/postgres/server.log , that let me see what the real problem was, which was that i hadn't fully completed the process of upgrading PostgreSQL

How do I disable and re-enable a button in with javascript?

true and false are not meant to be strings in this context.

You want the literal true and false Boolean values.

startButton.disabled = true;

startButton.disabled = false;

The reason it sort of works (disables the element) is because a non empty string is truthy. So assigning 'false' to the disabled property has the same effect of setting it to true.

How to change the default message of the required field in the popover of form-control in bootstrap?

You can use setCustomValidity function when oninvalid event occurs.

Like below:-

<input class="form-control" type="email" required=""
    placeholder="username" oninvalid="this.setCustomValidity('Please Enter valid email')">
</input>

Update:-

To clear the message once you start entering use oninput="setCustomValidity('') attribute to clear the message.

<input class="form-control" type="email"  required="" placeholder="username"
 oninvalid="this.setCustomValidity('Please Enter valid email')"
 oninput="setCustomValidity('')"></input>

PHP class not found but it's included

Maybe it is how you use new User(). Set path something like

$user = new \resources\engine\ajax\User();

vertical-align image in div

you don't need define positioning when you need vertical align center for inline and block elements you can take mentioned below idea:-

inline-elements :- <img style="vertical-align:middle" ...>
                   <span style="display:inline-block; vertical-align:middle"> foo<br>bar </span>

block-elements :- <td style="vertical-align:middle"> ... </td>
                  <div style="display:table-cell; vertical-align:middle"> ... </div>

see the demo:- http://jsfiddle.net/Ewfkk/2/

What causes an HTTP 405 "invalid method (HTTP verb)" error when POSTing a form to PHP on IIS?

I managed to get FTP access to the customer's server and so was able to track down the problem.

After the form is POSTed, I authenticate the user and then redirect to the main part of the app.

Util::redirect('/apps/content');

The error was occurring not on the posting of the form, but on the redirect immediately following it. For some reason, IIS was continuing to presume the POST method for the redirect, and then objecting to the POST to /apps/content as it's a directory.

The error message never indicated that it was the following page that was generating the error - thanks Microsoft!

The solution was to add a trailing slash:

Util::redirect('/apps/content/');

IIS could then resolve the redirect to a default document as is no longer attempting to POST to a directory.

Sanitizing user input before adding it to the DOM in Javascript

You could use a simple regular expression to assert that the id only contains allowed characters, like so:

if(id.match(/^[0-9a-zA-Z]{1,16}$/)){
    //The id is fine
}
else{
    //The id is illegal
}

My example allows only alphanumerical characters, and strings of length 1 to 16, you should change it to match the type of ids that you use.

By the way, at line 6, the value property is missing a pair of quotes, an easy mistake to make when you quote on two levels.

I can't see your actual data flow, depending on context this check may not at all be needed, or it may not be enough. In order to make a proper security review we would need more information.

In general, about built in escape or sanitize functions, don't trust them blindly. You need to know exactly what they do, and you need to establish that that is actually what you need. If it is not what you need, the code your own, most of the time a simple whitelisting regex like the one I gave you works just fine.

count (non-blank) lines-of-code in bash

There's already a program for this on linux called 'wc'.

Just

wc -l *.c

and it gives you the total lines and the lines for each file.

Eclipse Problems View not showing Errors anymore

If you have reached here that means all the other solutions did not work for you. One reason could be your source folder is not a java project.

Solution would be to run below command on the source folder

mvn eclipse:eclipse

This worked for me.

If this also doesn't work then try removing .classpath and .project file and run the above command again

Accessing inventory host variable in Ansible playbook

I struggled with this, too. My specific setup is: Your host.ini (with the modern names):

[test3]
test3-1 ansible_host=abc.def.ghi.pqr ansible_port=1212
test3-2 ansible_host=abc.def.ghi.stu ansible_port=1212

plus a play fill_file.yml

---
- remote_user: ec2-user
  hosts: test3
  tasks:
   - name: fill file
     template:
       src: file.j2
       dest: filled_file.txt

plus a template file.j2 , like

{% for host in groups['test3'] %}
   {{ hostvars[host].ansible_host }}
{% endfor %}

This worked for me, the result is

abc.def.ghi.pqr
abc.def.ghi.stu

I have to admit it's ansible 2.7, not 2.1. The template is a variation of an example in https://docs.ansible.com/ansible/latest/user_guide/playbooks_variables.html.

The accepted answer didn't work in my setup. With a template

{{ hostvars['test3'].ansible_host }}

my play fails with "AnsibleUndefinedVariable: \"hostvars['test3']\" is undefined" .

Remark: I tried some variations, but failed, occasionally with "ansible.vars.hostvars.HostVars object has no element "; Some of this might be explained by what they say. in https://github.com/ansible/ansible/issues/13343#issuecomment-160992631

hostvars emulates a dictionary [...]. hostvars is also lazily loaded

Current user in Magento?

Found under "app/code/core/Mage/Page/Block/Html/Header.php":

public function getWelcome()
{
    if (empty($this->_data['welcome'])) {
        if (Mage::app()->isInstalled() && Mage::getSingleton('customer/session')->isLoggedIn()) {
            $this->_data['welcome'] = $this->__('Welcome, %s!', Mage::getSingleton('customer/session')->getCustomer()->getName());
        } else {
            $this->_data['welcome'] = Mage::getStoreConfig('design/header/welcome');
        }
    }

    return $this->_data['welcome'];
}

So it looks like Mage::getSingleton('customer/session')->getCustomer() will get your current logged in customer ;)

To get the currently logged in admin:

Mage::getSingleton('admin/session')->getUser();

Return positions of a regex match() in Javascript?

From developer.mozilla.org docs on the String .match() method:

The returned Array has an extra input property, which contains the original string that was parsed. In addition, it has an index property, which represents the zero-based index of the match in the string.

When dealing with a non-global regex (i.e., no g flag on your regex), the value returned by .match() has an index property...all you have to do is access it.

var index = str.match(/regex/).index;

Here is an example showing it working as well:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var str = 'my string here';_x000D_
_x000D_
var index = str.match(/here/).index;_x000D_
_x000D_
alert(index); // <- 10
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

I have successfully tested this all the way back to IE5.

POST Multipart Form Data using Retrofit 2.0 including image

There is a correct way of uploading a file with its name with Retrofit 2, without any hack:

Define API interface:

@Multipart
@POST("uploadAttachment")
Call<MyResponse> uploadAttachment(@Part MultipartBody.Part filePart);
                                   // You can add other parameters too

Upload file like this:

File file = // initialize file here

MultipartBody.Part filePart = MultipartBody.Part.createFormData("file", file.getName(), RequestBody.create(MediaType.parse("image/*"), file));

Call<MyResponse> call = api.uploadAttachment(filePart);

This demonstrates only file uploading, you can also add other parameters in the same method with @Part annotation.

How do I convert a numpy array to (and display) an image?

Shortest path is to use scipy, like this:

from scipy.misc import toimage
toimage(data).show()

This requires PIL or Pillow to be installed as well.

A similar approach also requiring PIL or Pillow but which may invoke a different viewer is:

from scipy.misc import imshow
imshow(data)

How to grant remote access permissions to mysql server for user?

You need to take some steps to make sure first mysql and then root user is accessible from outside:

  1. Disable skip-networking in my.cnf (i.e: /etc/mysql/my.cnf)

Python 3: ImportError "No Module named Setuptools"

For others with the same issue due to a different reason: This can also happen when there's a pyproject.toml in the same directory as the setup.py, even when setuptools is available.

Removing pyproject.toml fixed the issue for me.

How to properly create an SVN tag from trunk?

Use:

svn copy http://svn.example.com/project/trunk \
      http://svn.example.com/project/tags/1.0 -m "Release 1.0"

Shorthand:

cd /path/to/project
svn copy ^/trunk ^/tags/1.0 -m "Release 1.0"

Converting byte array to String (Java)

The previous answer from Andreas_D is good. I'm just going to add that wherever you are displaying the output there will be a font and a character encoding and it may not support some characters.

To work out whether it is Java or your display that is a problem, do this:

    for(int i=0;i<str.length();i++) {
        char ch = str.charAt(i);
        System.out.println(i+" : "+ch+" "+Integer.toHexString(ch)+((ch=='\ufffd') ? " Unknown character" : ""));
    }

Java will have mapped any characters it cannot understand to 0xfffd the official character for unknown characters. If you see a '?' in the output, but it is not mapped to 0xfffd, it is your display font or encoding that is the problem, not Java.

How do I tell if .NET 3.5 SP1 is installed?

Look at HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5\. One of these must be true:

  • The Version value in that key should be 3.5.30729.01
  • Or the SP value in the same key should be 1

In C# (taken from the first comment), you could do something along these lines:

const string name = @"SOFTWARE\Microsoft\NET Framework Setup\NDP\v3.5";
RegistryKey subKey = Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey(name);
var version = subKey.GetValue("Version").ToString();
var servicePack = subKey.GetValue("SP").ToString();

Correct way to load a Nib for a UIView subclass

Answering my own question about 2 or something years later here but...

It uses a protocol extension so you can do it without any extra code for all classes.

/*

Prerequisites
-------------
- In IB set the view's class to the type hook up any IBOutlets
- In IB ensure the file's owner is blank

*/

public protocol CreatedFromNib {
    static func createFromNib() -> Self?
    static func nibName() -> String?
}

extension UIView: CreatedFromNib { }

public extension CreatedFromNib where Self: UIView {

    public static func createFromNib() -> Self? {
        guard let nibName = nibName() else { return nil }
        guard let view = NSBundle.mainBundle().loadNibNamed(nibName, owner: nil, options: nil).last as? Self else { return nil }
        return view
    }

    public static func nibName() -> String? {
        guard let n = NSStringFromClass(Self.self).componentsSeparatedByString(".").last else { return nil }
        return n
    }
}

// Usage:
let myView = MyView().createFromNib()

"Failed to install the following Android SDK packages as some licences have not been accepted" error

Appears to be a bug at the momment: https://issuetracker.google.com/issues/123054726

Solution that worked for me:

Create a .travis.yml file in your project directory and copy these lines:

before_script:
- mkdir "$ANDROID_HOME/licenses" || true
- echo "24333f8a63b6825ea9c5514f83c2829b004d1fee" > "$ANDROID_HOME/licenses/android-sdk-license"

Align div with fixed position on the right side

Here's the real solution (with other cool CSS3 stuff):

#fixed-square {
position: fixed;
top: 0;
right: 0;
z-index: 9500;
cursor: pointer;
width: 24px;
padding: 18px 18px 14px;
opacity: 0.618;
-webkit-transform: rotate(-90deg);
-moz-transform: rotate(-90deg);
-ms-transform: rotate(-90deg);
transform: rotate(-90deg);
-webkit-transition: all 0.145s ease-out;
-moz-transition: all 0.145s ease-out;
-ms-transition: all 0.145s ease-out;
transition: all 0.145s ease-out;
}

Note the top:0 and right:0. That's what did it for me.

Calling another method java GUI

I'm not sure what you're trying to do, but here's something to consider: c(); won't do anything. c is an instance of the class checkbox and not a method to be called. So consider this:

public class FirstWindow extends JFrame {      public FirstWindow() {         checkbox c = new checkbox();         c.yourMethod(yourParameters); // call the method you made in checkbox     } }  public class checkbox extends JFrame {      public checkbox(yourParameters) {          // this is the constructor method used to initialize instance variables     }      public void yourMethod() // doesn't have to be void     {         // put your code here     } }

Binary Data Posting with curl

You don't need --header "Content-Length: $LENGTH".

curl --request POST --data-binary "@template_entry.xml" $URL

Note that GET request does not support content body widely.

Also remember that POST request have 2 different coding schema. This is first form:

  $ nc -l -p 6666 &
  $ curl  --request POST --data-binary "@README" http://localhost:6666

POST / HTTP/1.1
User-Agent: curl/7.21.0 (x86_64-pc-linux-gnu) libcurl/7.21.0 OpenSSL/0.9.8o zlib/1.2.3.4 libidn/1.15 libssh2/1.2.6
Host: localhost:6666
Accept: */*
Content-Length: 9309
Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded
Expect: 100-continue

.. -*- mode: rst; coding: cp1251; fill-column: 80 -*-
.. rst2html.py README README.html
.. contents::

You probably request this:

-F/--form name=content
           (HTTP) This lets curl emulate a filled-in form in
              which a user has pressed the submit button. This
              causes curl to POST data using the Content- Type
              multipart/form-data according to RFC2388. This
              enables uploading of binary files etc. To force the
              'content' part to be a file, prefix the file name
              with an @ sign. To just get the content part from a
              file, prefix the file name with the symbol <. The
              difference between @ and < is then that @ makes a
              file get attached in the post as a file upload,
              while the < makes a text field and just get the
              contents for that text field from a file.

Excel date to Unix timestamp

Windows and Mac Excel (2011):

Unix Timestamp = (Excel Timestamp - 25569) * 86400
Excel Timestamp =  (Unix Timestamp / 86400) + 25569

MAC OS X (2007):

Unix Timestamp = (Excel Timestamp - 24107) * 86400
Excel Timestamp =  (Unix Timestamp / 86400) + 24107

For Reference:

86400 = Seconds in a day
25569 = Days between 1970/01/01 and 1900/01/01 (min date in Windows Excel)
24107 = Days between 1970/01/01 and 1904/01/02 (min date in Mac Excel 2007)

How can I verify a Google authentication API access token?

you can verify a Google authentication access token by using this endpoint:

Multiple bluetooth connection

Have you looked into the BluetoothAdapter Android class? You set up one device as a server and the other as a client. It may be possible (although I haven't looked into it myself) to connect multiple clients to the server.

I have had success connecting a BlueTooth audio device to a phone while it also had this BluetoothAdapter connection to another phone, but I haven't tried with three phones. At least this tells me that the Bluetooth radio can tolerate multiple simultaneous connections :)

How to read text files with ANSI encoding and non-English letters?

You get the question-mark-diamond characters when your textfile uses high-ANSI encoding -- meaning it uses characters between 127 and 255. Those characters have the eighth (i.e. the most significant) bit set. When ASP.NET reads the textfile it assumes UTF-8 encoding, and that most significant bit has a special meaning.

You must force ASP.NET to interpret the textfile as high-ANSI encoding, by telling it the codepage is 1252:

String textFilePhysicalPath = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Server.MapPath("~/textfiles/MyInputFile.txt");
String contents = File.ReadAllText(textFilePhysicalPath, System.Text.Encoding.GetEncoding(1252));
lblContents.Text = contents.Replace("\n", "<br />");  // change linebreaks to HTML

Caused By: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/log4j/Logger

During runtime your application is unable to find the jar.

Taken from this answer by Jared:

It is important to keep two different exceptions straight in our head in this case:

  1. java.lang.ClassNotFoundException This an Exception, it indicates that the class was not found on the classpath. This indicates that we were trying to load the class definition, and the class did not exist on the classpath.

  2. java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError This is Error, it indicates that the JVM looked in its internal class definition data structure for the definition of a class and did not find it. This is different than saying that it could not be loaded from the classpath. Usually this indicates that we previously attempted to load a class from the classpath, but it failed for some reason - now we're trying again, but we're not even going to try to load it, because we failed loading it earlier. The earlier failure could be a ClassNotFoundException or an ExceptionInInitializerError (indicating a failure in the static initialization block) or any number of other problems. The point is, a NoClassDefFoundError is not necessarily a classpath problem.

Iterating over arrays in Python 3

While iterating over a list or array with this method:

ar = [10, 11, 12]
for i in ar:
    theSum = theSum + ar[i]

You are actually getting the values of list or array sequentially in i variable. If you print the variable i inside the for loop. You will get following output:

10
11
12

However, in your code you are confusing i variable with index value of array. Therefore, while doing ar[i] will mean ar[10] for the first iteration. Which is of course index out of range throwing IndexError

Edit You can read this for better understanding of different methods of iterating over array or list in Python

git recover deleted file where no commit was made after the delete

Does file_get_contents() have a timeout setting?

Yes! By passing a stream context in the third parameter:

Here with a timeout of 1s:

file_get_contents("https://abcedef.com", 0, stream_context_create(["http"=>["timeout"=>1]]));

Source in comment section of https://www.php.net/manual/en/function.file-get-contents.php

HTTP context options:

method
header
user_agent
content
request_fulluri
follow_location
max_redirects
protocol_version
timeout

Other contexts: https://www.php.net/manual/en/context.php

Quickest way to compare two generic lists for differences

try this way:

var difList = list1.Where(a => !list2.Any(a1 => a1.id == a.id))
            .Union(list2.Where(a => !list1.Any(a1 => a1.id == a.id)));

Use of 'const' for function parameters

I use const were I can. Const for parameters means that they should not change their value. This is especially valuable when passing by reference. const for function declares that the function should not change the classes members.

How to dismiss keyboard for UITextView with return key?

Just solved this problem a different way.

  • Create a button that will be placed in the background
  • From the Attribute Inspector, change the button type to custom, and the makes the button transparent.
  • Expand the button to cover the whole view, and make sure the button is behind all the other object. Easy way to do this is to drag the button to the top of list view in the View
  • Control drag the button to the viewController.h file and create an action (Sent Event: Touch Up Inside) like :

    (IBAction)ExitKeyboard:(id)sender;

  • In ViewController.m should look like :

    (IBAction)ExitKeyboard:(id)sender {
        [self.view endEditing:TRUE];
    }

  • Run app, and when you click away from the TextView, the keyboard disappears

JWT (Json Web Token) Audience "aud" versus Client_Id - What's the difference?

As it turns out, my suspicions were right. The audience aud claim in a JWT is meant to refer to the Resource Servers that should accept the token.

As this post simply puts it:

The audience of a token is the intended recipient of the token.

The audience value is a string -- typically, the base address of the resource being accessed, such as https://contoso.com.

The client_id in OAuth refers to the client application that will be requesting resources from the Resource Server.

The Client app (e.g. your iOS app) will request a JWT from your Authentication Server. In doing so, it passes it's client_id and client_secret along with any user credentials that may be required. The Authorization Server validates the client using the client_id and client_secret and returns a JWT.

The JWT will contain an aud claim that specifies which Resource Servers the JWT is valid for. If the aud contains www.myfunwebapp.com, but the client app tries to use the JWT on www.supersecretwebapp.com, then access will be denied because that Resource Server will see that the JWT was not meant for it.

  3. In Build Environment section check "Inject environment variables to the build process"
  4. In "Properties Content" specified: TZ=America/New_York

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space

  1. Upto my knowledge, Heap space is occupied by instance variables only. If this is correct, then why this error occurred after running fine for sometime as space for instance variables are alloted at the time of object creation.

That means you are creating more objects in your application over a period of time continuously. New objects will be stored in heap memory and that's the reason for growth in heap memory.

Heap not only contains instance variables. It will store all non-primitive data types ( Objects). These objects life time may be short (method block) or long (till the object is referenced in your application)

  1. Is there any way to increase the heap space?

Yes. Have a look at this oracle article for more details.

There are two parameters for setting the heap size:

-Xms:, which sets the initial and minimum heap size

-Xmx:, which sets the maximum heap size

  1. What changes should I made to my program so that It will grab less heap space?

It depends on your application.

  1. Set the maximum heap memory as per your application requirement

  2. Don't cause memory leaks in your application

  3. If you find memory leaks in your application, find the root cause with help of profiling tools like MAT, Visual VM , jconsole etc. Once you find the root cause, fix the leaks.

Important notes from oracle article

Cause: The detail message Java heap space indicates object could not be allocated in the Java heap. This error does not necessarily imply a memory leak.

Possible reasons:

  1. Improper configuration ( not allocating sufficiant memory)
  2. Application is unintentionally holding references to objects and this prevents the objects from being garbage collected
  3. Applications that make excessive use of finalizers. If a class has a finalize method, then objects of that type do not have their space reclaimed at garbage collection time. If the finalizer thread cannot keep up, with the finalization queue, then the Java heap could fill up and this type of OutOfMemoryError exception would be thrown.

On a different note, use better Garbage collection algorithms ( CMS or G1GC)

How to pass data from child component to its parent in ReactJS?

React.createClass method has been deprecated in the new version of React, you can do it very simply in the following way make one functional component and another class component to maintain state:

Can't pickle <type 'instancemethod'> when using multiprocessing Pool.map()

In this simple case, where someClass.f is not inheriting any data from the class and not attaching anything to the class, a possible solution would be to separate out f, so it can be pickled:

import multiprocessing

def f(x):
    return x*x

class someClass(object):
    def __init__(self):
        pass

    def go(self):
        pool = multiprocessing.Pool(processes=4)
        print pool.map(f, range(10))

Can I call curl_setopt with CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER multiple times to set multiple headers?

Following what curl does internally for the request (via the method outlined in this answer to "Php - Debugging Curl") answers the question: No, it is not possible to use the curl_setopt call with CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER. The second call will overwrite the headers of the first call.

Instead the function needs to be called once with all headers:

$headers = array(
    'Content-type: application/xml',
    'Authorization: gfhjui',
);
curl_setopt($curlHandle, CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER, $headers);

python: How do I know what type of exception occurred?

You usually should not catch all possible exceptions with try: ... except as this is overly broad. Just catch those that are expected to happen for whatever reason. If you really must, for example if you want to find out more about some problem while debugging, you should do

try:
    ...
except Exception as ex:
    print ex # do whatever you want for debugging.
    raise    # re-raise exception.

Render Partial View Using jQuery in ASP.NET MVC

Using standard Ajax call to achieve same result

                $('#divSearchResult').html(result);

vbscript output to console

This was found on Dragon-IT Scripts and Code Repository.

You can do this with the following and stay away from the cscript/wscript differences and allows you to get the same console output that a batch file would have. This can help if your calling VBS from a batch file and need to make it look seamless.

Convert Linq Query Result to Dictionary

Instantly detect client disconnection from server socket

I've found quite useful, another workaround for that!

If you use asynchronous methods for reading data from the network socket (I mean, use BeginReceive - EndReceive methods), whenever a connection is terminated; one of these situations appear: Either a message is sent with no data (you can see it with Socket.Available - even though BeginReceive is triggered, its value will be zero) or Socket.Connected value becomes false in this call (don't try to use EndReceive then).

I'm posting the function I used, I think you can see what I meant from it better:

private void OnRecieve(IAsyncResult parameter)
{
    Socket sock = (Socket)parameter.AsyncState;
    if(!sock.Connected || sock.Available == 0)
    {
        // Connection is terminated, either by force or willingly
        return;
    }

    sock.EndReceive(parameter);
    sock.BeginReceive(..., ... , ... , ..., new AsyncCallback(OnRecieve), sock);

    // To handle further commands sent by client.
    // "..." zones might change in your code.
}

What is "not assignable to parameter of type never" error in typescript?

I was able to get past this by using the Array keyword instead of empty brackets:

const enhancers: Array<any> = [];

Use:

if (typeof devToolsExtension === 'function') {
  enhancers.push(devToolsExtension())
}

'import' and 'export' may only appear at the top level

I got this error when I was missing a closing brace in a component method:

const Whoops = props => {
  const wonk = () => {props.wonk();      // <- note missing } brace!
  return (
    <View onPress={wonk} />
  )
}

Flattening a shallow list in Python

If you have to flat a more complicated list with not iterable elements or with depth more than 2 you can use following function:

def flat_list(list_to_flat):
    if not isinstance(list_to_flat, list):
        yield list_to_flat
    else:
        for item in list_to_flat:
            yield from flat_list(item)

It will return a generator object which you can convert to a list with list() function. Notice that yield from syntax is available starting from python3.3, but you can use explicit iteration instead.
Example:

>>> a = [1, [2, 3], [1, [2, 3, [1, [2, 3]]]]]
>>> print(list(flat_list(a)))
[1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 3]

How to check if two words are anagrams

Works perfectly! But not a good approach because it runs in O(n^2)

        return false;

   A = A.toLowerCase();
   B = B.toLowerCase();

       boolean found = false;
       for(int j = 0; j < B.length(); j++){
           if(A.charAt(i) == B.charAt(j)){
               found = true;
               break;
           }
       }
       if(!found){
           return false;
       }
   }

   for(int i = 0; i < B.length(); i++){
       boolean found = false;
       for(int j = 0; j < A.length(); j++){
           if(A.charAt(j) == B.charAt(i)){
               found = true;
               break;
           }
       }
       if(!found){
           return false;
       }
   }

   int sum1 = 0, sum2 = 0;
   for(int i = 0; i < A.length(); i++){
       sum1 += (int)A.charAt(i);
       sum2 += (int)B.charAt(i);
   }

   if(sum1 == sum2){
       return true;
   }
   return false;
}

Dynamic instantiation from string name of a class in dynamically imported module?

tl;dr

Import the root module with importlib.import_module and load the class by its name using getattr function:

# Standard import
import importlib
# Load "module.submodule.MyClass"
MyClass = getattr(importlib.import_module("module.submodule"), "MyClass")
# Instantiate the class (pass arguments to the constructor, if needed)
instance = MyClass()

explanations

You probably don't want to use __import__ to dynamically import a module by name, as it does not allow you to import submodules:

>>> mod = __import__("os.path")
>>> mod.join
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'join'

Here is what the python doc says about __import__:

Note: This is an advanced function that is not needed in everyday Python programming, unlike importlib.import_module().

Instead, use the standard importlib module to dynamically import a module by name. With getattr you can then instantiate a class by its name:

import importlib
my_module = importlib.import_module("module.submodule")
MyClass = getattr(my_module, "MyClass")
instance = MyClass()

You could also write:

import importlib
module_name, class_name = "module.submodule.MyClass".rsplit(".", 1)
MyClass = getattr(importlib.import_module(module_name), class_name)
instance = MyClass()

This code is valid in python = 2.7 (including python 3).

Node.js heap out of memory

Steps to fix this issue (In Windows) -

  1. Open command prompt and type %appdata% press enter
  2. Navigate to %appdata% > npm folder
  3. Open or Edit ng.cmd in your favorite editor
  4. Add --max_old_space_size=8192 to the IF and ELSE block

Your node.cmd file looks like this after the change:

@IF EXIST "%~dp0\node.exe" (
  "%~dp0\node.exe" "--max_old_space_size=8192" "%~dp0\node_modules\@angular\cli\bin\ng" %*
) ELSE (
  @SETLOCAL
  @SET PATHEXT=%PATHEXT:;.JS;=;%
  node "--max_old_space_size=8192" "%~dp0\node_modules\@angular\cli\bin\ng" %*
)

Convert an image to grayscale

None of the examples above create 8-bit (8bpp) bitmap images. Some software, such as image processing, only supports 8bpp. Unfortunately the MS .NET libraries do not have a solution. The PixelFormat.Format8bppIndexed format looks promising but after a lot of attempts I couldn't get it working.

To create a true 8-bit bitmap file you need to create the proper headers. Ultimately I found the Grayscale library solution for creating 8-bit bitmap (BMP) files. The code is very simple:

Image image = Image.FromFile("c:/path/to/image.jpg");
GrayBMP_File.CreateGrayBitmapFile(image, "c:/path/to/8bpp/image.bmp");

The code for this project is far from pretty but it works, with one little simple-to-fix problem. The author hard-coded the image resolution to 10x10. Image processing programs do not like this. The fix is open GrayBMP_File.cs (yeah, funky file naming, I know) and replace lines 50 and 51 with the code below. The example sets the resolution to 200x200 but you should change it to the proper number.

int resX = 200;
int resY = 200;
// horizontal resolution
Copy_to_Index(DIB_header, BitConverter.GetBytes(resX * 100), 24);
// vertical resolution
Copy_to_Index(DIB_header, BitConverter.GetBytes(resY * 100), 28);

Git command to show which specific files are ignored by .gitignore

Notes:

Also interesting (mentioned in qwertymk's answer), you can also use the git check-ignore -v command, at least on Unix (doesn't work in a CMD Windows session)

git check-ignore *
git check-ignore -v *

The second one displays the actual rule of the .gitignore which makes a file to be ignored in your git repo.
On Unix, using "What expands to all files in current directory recursively?" and a bash4+:

git check-ignore **/*

(or a find -exec command)

Note: https://stackoverflow.com/users/351947/Rafi B. suggests in the comments to avoid the (risky) globstar:

git check-ignore -v $(find . -type f -print)

Make sure to exclude the files from the .git/ subfolder though.

Original answer 42009)

git ls-files -i

should work, except its source code indicates:

if (show_ignored && !exc_given) {
                fprintf(stderr, "%s: --ignored needs some exclude pattern\n",
                        argv[0]);

exc_given ?

It turns out it need one more parameter after the -i to actually list anything:

Try:

git ls-files -i --exclude-from=[Path_To_Your_Global].gitignore

(but that would only list your cached (non-ignored) object, with a filter, so that is not quite what you want)

Example:

$ cat .git/ignore
# ignore objects and archives, anywhere in the tree.
*.[oa]
$ cat Documentation/.gitignore
# ignore generated html files,
*.html
# except foo.html which is maintained by hand
!foo.html
$ git ls-files --ignored \
    --exclude='Documentation/*.[0-9]' \
    --exclude-from=.git/ignore \
    --exclude-per-directory=.gitignore

Actually, in my 'gitignore' file (called 'exclude'), I find a command line that could help you:

F:\prog\git\test\.git\info>type exclude
# git ls-files --others --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude
# Lines that start with '#' are comments.
# For a project mostly in C, the following would be a good set of
# exclude patterns (uncomment them if you want to use them):
# *.[oa]
# *~

So....

git ls-files --ignored --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude
git ls-files -i --exclude-from=.git/info/exclude

git ls-files --others --ignored --exclude-standard
git ls-files -o -i --exclude-standard

should do the trick.

(Thanks to honzajde pointing out in the comments that git ls-files -o -i --exclude-from... does not include cached files: only git ls-files -i --exclude-from... (without -o) does.)

As mentioned in the ls-files man page, --others is the important part, in order to show you non-cached, non-committed, normally-ignored files.

--exclude_standard is not just a shortcut, but a way to include all standard "ignored patterns" settings.

exclude-standard
Add the standard git exclusions: .git/info/exclude, .gitignore in each directory, and the user's global exclusion file.

How to copy a file from remote server to local machine?

When you use scp you have to tell the host name and ip address from where you want to copy the file. For instance, if you are at the remote host and you want to transfer the file to your pc you may use something like this:

scp -P[portnumber] myfile_at_remote_host [user]@[your_ip_address]:/your/path/

Example:

scp -P22 table [email protected]:/home/me/Desktop/

On the other hand, if you are at your are actually on your machine you may use something like this:

scp -P[portnumber] [remote_login]@[remote's_ip_address]:/remote/path/myfile_at_remote_host /your/path/

Example:

scp -P22 [fake_user]@222.222.222.222:/remote/path/table /home/me/Desktop/

asp.net mvc3 return raw html to view

There's no much point in doing that, because View should be generating html, not the controller. But anyways, you could use Controller.Content method, which gives you ability to specify result html, also content-type and encoding

public ActionResult Index()
{
    return Content("<html></html>");
}

Or you could use the trick built in asp.net-mvc framework - make the action return string directly. It will deliver string contents into users's browser.

public string Index()
{
    return "<html></html>";
}

In fact, for any action result other than ActionResult, framework tries to serialize it into string and write to response.

How to set the min and max height or width of a Frame?

There is no single magic function to force a frame to a minimum or fixed size. However, you can certainly force the size of a frame by giving the frame a width and height. You then have to do potentially two more things: when you put this window in a container you need to make sure the geometry manager doesn't shrink or expand the window. Two, if the frame is a container for other widget, turn grid or pack propagation off so that the frame doesn't shrink or expand to fit its own contents.

Note, however, that this won't prevent you from resizing a window to be smaller than an internal frame. In that case the frame will just be clipped.

import Tkinter as tk

root = tk.Tk()
frame1 = tk.Frame(root, width=100, height=100, background="bisque")
frame2 = tk.Frame(root, width=50, height = 50, background="#b22222")

frame1.pack(fill=None, expand=False)
frame2.place(relx=.5, rely=.5, anchor="c")

root.mainloop()

Add to integers in a list

You can append to the end of a list:

foo = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
foo.append(4)
foo.append([8,7])
print(foo)            # [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, [8, 7]]

You can edit items in the list like this:

foo = [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
foo[3] = foo[3] + 4
print(foo)            # [1, 2, 3, 8, 5]

Insert integers into the middle of a list:

x = [2, 5, 10]
x.insert(2, 77)
print(x)              # [2, 5, 77, 10]

Excel Formula to SUMIF date falls in particular month

Try this instead:

  =SUM(IF(MONTH($A$2:$A$6)=1,$B$2:$B$6,0))

It's an array formula, so you will need to enter it with the Control-Shift-Enter key combination.

Here's how the formula works.

  1. MONTH($A$2:$A$6) creates an array of numeric values of the month for the dates in A2:A6, that is,
    {1, 1, 1, 2, 2}.
  2. Then the comparison {1, 1, 1, 2, 2}= 1 produces the array {TRUE, TRUE, TRUE, FALSE, FALSE}, which comprises the condition for the IF statement.
  3. The IF statement then returns an array of values, with {430, 96, 400.. for the values of the sum ranges where the month value equals 1 and ..0,0} where the month value does not equal 1.
  4. That array {430, 96, 400, 0, 0} is then summed to get the answer you are looking for.

This is essentially equivalent to what the SUMIF and SUMIFs functions do. However, neither of those functions support the kind of calculation you tried to include in the conditional.

It's also possible to drop the IF completely. Since TRUE and FALSE can also be treated as 1 and 0, this formula--=SUM((MONTH($A$2:$A$6)=1)*$B$2:$B$6)--also works.

Heads up: This does not work in Google Spreadsheets

Asynchronous method call in Python?

Is there any reason not to use threads? You can use the threading class. Instead of finished() function use the isAlive(). The result() function could join() the thread and retrieve the result. And, if you can, override the run() and __init__ functions to call the function specified in the constructor and save the value somewhere to the instance of the class.
