Rounded table corners CSS only

Add between <head> tags:

<style>
  td {background: #ffddaa; width: 20%;}
</style>

and in the body:

<div style="background: black; border-radius: 12px;">
  <table width="100%" style="cell-spacing: 1px;">
    <tr>
      <td style="border-top-left-radius: 10px;">
        Noordwest
      </td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>Noord</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td style="border-top-right-radius: 10px;">
        Noordoost
      </td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>West</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>Centrum</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>Oost</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td style="border-bottom-left-radius: 10px;">
        Zuidwest
      </td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td>Zuid</td>
      <td>&nbsp;</td>
      <td style="border-bottom-right-radius: 10px;">
        Zuidoost
      </td>
    </tr>
  </table>
</div>

The cell color, contents and formatting are of course for example;
it's about spacing color-filled cells within a div. Doing so, the black cell borders/table border are actually the div background color.
Note that you'll need to set the div-border-radius about 2 values greater than the separate cell corner border radii, to take a smooth rounded corner effect.

What is the best way to give a C# auto-property an initial value?

In Version of C# (6.0) & greater, you can do :

For Readonly properties

public int ReadOnlyProp => 2;

For both Writable & Readable properties

public string PropTest { get; set; } = "test";

In current Version of C# (7.0), you can do : (The snippet rather displays how you can use expression bodied get/set accessors to make is more compact when using with backing fields)

private string label = "Default Value";

// Expression-bodied get / set accessors.
public string Label
{
   get => label;
   set => this.label = value;
 }

How to deal with certificates using Selenium?

I ran into the same issue with Selenium and Behat. If you want to pass the parameters via behat.yml, here is what it needs to look like:

default:
    extensions:
        Behat\MinkExtension:
            base_url: https://my-app.com
            default_session: selenium2
            selenium2:
                browser: firefox
                capabilities:
                    extra_capabilities:
                        acceptInsecureCerts: true

no default constructor exists for class

A default constructor is a constructor that either has no parameters, or if it has parameters, all the parameters have default values.

How to detect if multiple keys are pressed at once using JavaScript?

document.onkeydown = keydown;

function keydown (evt) {

    if (!evt) evt = event;

    if (evt.ctrlKey && evt.altKey && evt.keyCode === 115) {

        alert("CTRL+ALT+F4");

how to assign a block of html code to a javascript variable

we can use backticks (``) without any error.. eg: <div>"test"<div>

we can store large template(HTML) inside the backticks which was introduced in ES6 javascript standard

No need to escape any special characters

if no backticks.. we need to escape characters by appending backslash() eg:" \"test\""

Using module 'subprocess' with timeout

This solution kills the process tree in case of shell=True, passes parameters to the process (or not), has a timeout and gets the stdout, stderr and process output of the call back (it uses psutil for the kill_proc_tree). This was based on several solutions posted in SO including jcollado's. Posting in response to comments by Anson and jradice in jcollado's answer. Tested in Windows Srvr 2012 and Ubuntu 14.04. Please note that for Ubuntu you need to change the parent.children(...) call to parent.get_children(...).

def kill_proc_tree(pid, including_parent=True):
  parent = psutil.Process(pid)
  children = parent.children(recursive=True)
  for child in children:
    child.kill()
  psutil.wait_procs(children, timeout=5)
  if including_parent:
    parent.kill()
    parent.wait(5)

def run_with_timeout(cmd, current_dir, cmd_parms, timeout):
  def target():
    process = subprocess.Popen(cmd, cwd=current_dir, shell=True, stdout=subprocess.PIPE, stdin=subprocess.PIPE, stderr=subprocess.PIPE)

    # wait for the process to terminate
    if (cmd_parms == ""):
      out, err = process.communicate()
    else:
      out, err = process.communicate(cmd_parms)
    errcode = process.returncode

  thread = Thread(target=target)
  thread.start()

  thread.join(timeout)
  if thread.is_alive():
    me = os.getpid()
    kill_proc_tree(me, including_parent=False)
    thread.join()

How do I return to an older version of our code in Subversion?

How to check if an integer is in a given range?

ValueRange range = java.time.temporal.ValueRange.of(minValue, maxValue);
range.isValidIntValue(x);

it returns true if minValue <= x <= MaxValue - i.e within the range

it returns false if x < minValue or x > maxValue - i.e outofrange

Use with if condition as shown below:

int value = 10;
if(ValueRange.of(0, 100).isValidIntValue(value)) {
    System.out.println("Value is with in the Range.");
} else {
    System.out.println("Value is out of the Range.");
}

below program checks, if any of the passed integer value in the hasTeen method is within the range of 13(inclusive) to 19(Inclusive)

import java.time.temporal.ValueRange;
public class TeenNumberChecker {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        System.out.println(hasTeen(9, 99, 19));
        System.out.println(hasTeen(23, 15, 42));
        System.out.println(hasTeen(22, 23, 34));

    }

    public static boolean hasTeen(int firstNumber, int secondNumber, int thirdNumber) {

        ValueRange range = ValueRange.of(13, 19);
        System.out.println("*********Int validation Start ***********");
        System.out.println(range.isIntValue());
        System.out.println(range.isValidIntValue(firstNumber));
        System.out.println(range.isValidIntValue(secondNumber));
        System.out.println(range.isValidIntValue(thirdNumber));
        System.out.println(range.isValidValue(thirdNumber));
        System.out.println("**********Int validation End**************");

        if (range.isValidIntValue(firstNumber) || range.isValidIntValue(secondNumber) || range.isValidIntValue(thirdNumber)) {
            return true;
        } else
            return false;
    }
}

Setting Remote Webdriver to run tests in a remote computer using Java

This is how I got rid of the error:

WebDriverException: Error forwarding the new session cannot find : {platform=WINDOWS, ensureCleanSession=true, browserName=internet explorer, version=11}

In your nodeconfig.json, the version must be a String, not an integer.

So instead of using "version": 11 use "version": "11" (note the double quotes).

Chrome's remote debugging (USB debugging) not working for Samsung Galaxy S3 running android 4.3

Quickly create a large file on a Linux system

This is the fastest I could do (which is not fast) with the following constraints:

  • The goal of the large file is to fill a disk, so can't be compressible.
  • Using ext3 filesystem. (fallocate not available)

This is the gist of it...

// include stdlib.h, stdio.h, and stdint.h
int32_t buf[256]; // Block size.
for (int i = 0; i < 256; ++i)
{
    buf[i] = rand(); // random to be non-compressible.
}
FILE* file = fopen("/file/on/your/system", "wb");
int blocksToWrite = 1024 * 1024; // 1 GB
for (int i = 0; i < blocksToWrite; ++i)
{
   fwrite(buf, sizeof(int32_t), 256, file);
}

In our case this is for an embedded linux system and this works well enough, but would prefer something faster.

FYI the command dd if=/dev/urandom of=outputfile bs=1024 count = XX was so slow as to be unusable.

How to get the browser language using JavaScript

The "JavaScript" way:

is what you will get with the first answer. tk does support min and max size

window.minsize(width = X, height = x)
window.maxsize(width = X, height = x)

i figured it out but just trying the first one. using python3 with tk.

What is a 'NoneType' object?

In Python, to represent the absence of a value, you can use the None value types.NoneType.None

Python, compute list difference

If the order does not matter, you can simply calculate the set difference:

>>> set([1,2,3,4]) - set([2,5])
set([1, 4, 3])
>>> set([2,5]) - set([1,2,3,4])
set([5])

submit the form using ajax

I would like to add a new pure javascript way to do this, which in my opinion is much cleaner, by using the fetch() API. This a modern way to implements network requests. In your case, since you already have a form element we can simply use it to build our request.

const formInputs = oForm.getElementsByTagName("input");
let formData = new FormData();
for (let input of formInputs) {
    formData.append(input.name, input.value);
}

fetch(oForm.action,
    {
        method: oForm.method,
        body: formData
    })
    .then(response => response.json())
    .then(data => console.log(data))
    .catch(error => console.log(error.message))
    .finally(() => console.log("Done"));

As you can see it is very clean and much less verbose to use than XMLHttpRequest.

Linq UNION query to select two elements

EDIT:

Ok I found why the int.ToString() in LINQtoEF fails, please read this post: Problem with converting int to string in Linq to entities

This works on my side :

        List<string> materialTypes = (from u in result.Users
                                      select u.LastName)
                       .Union(from u in result.Users
                               select SqlFunctions.StringConvert((double) u.UserId)).ToList();

On yours it should be like this:

    IList<String> materialTypes = ((from tom in context.MaterialTypes
                                       where tom.IsActive == true
                                       select tom.Name)
                                       .Union(from tom in context.MaterialTypes
                                       where tom.IsActive == true
                                       select SqlFunctions.StringConvert((double)tom.ID))).ToList();

Thanks, i've learnt something today :)

SQL-Server: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing

Its because the .mdf and .ldf Files from the original Db were locate at maybe c:\programFile\.... and this info is saved in the Backup!

If you create the same DB on a different SQL Server where the installation is on c:\program Files (x86)\ .... you can not restore as usually. You need to relocate the path for .mdf and .ldf Files.

Therefore:

  • Create a empty DB on the new Server

  • Right click on the empty Db > Tasks > Restore > Database > click Device select your .bak Files > Select Db to restore into

  • click on Files at left side > Select "Relocate all Files to Folder"
  • click Options on the left site > click on Overwrite

Done!
Hope it helps!

ImportError: No module named requests

The only thing that worked for me:

curl https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py -o get-pip.py
python get-pip.py
pip install requests

Open Form2 from Form1, close Form1 from Form2

if you just want to close form1 from form2 without closing form2 as well in the process, as the title suggests, then you could pass a reference to form 1 along to form 2 when you create it and use that to close form 1

for example you could add a

public class Form2 : Form
{
    Form2(Form1 parentForm):base()
    {
        this.parentForm = parentForm;
    }

    Form1 parentForm;
    .....
}

field and constructor to Form2

if you want to first close form2 and then form1 as the text of the question suggests, I'd go with Justins answer of returning an appropriate result to form1 on upon closing form2

Expected linebreaks to be 'LF' but found 'CRLF' linebreak-style

If you are using vscode and you are on Windows i would recommend you to click the option at the bottom-right of the window and set it to LF from CRLF. Because we should not turn off the configuration just for sake of removing errors on Windows

If you don't see LF / CLRF, then right click the status bar and select Editor End of Line.

Could not find server 'server name' in sys.servers. SQL Server 2014

At first check out that your linked server is in the list by this query

select name from sys.servers

If it not exists then try to add to the linked server

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = 'SERVER_NAME' --or may be server ip address

After that login to that linked server by

EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'SERVER_NAME'
                         ,'false'
                         ,NULL
                         ,'USER_NAME'
                         ,'PASSWORD'

Then you can do whatever you want ,treat it like your local server

exec [SERVER_NAME].[DATABASE_NAME].dbo.SP_NAME @sample_parameter

Finally you can drop that server from linked server list by

sp_dropserver 'SERVER_NAME', 'droplogins'

If it will help you then please upvote.

Java: Calling a super method which calls an overridden method

To summarize, this points to current object and the method invocation in java is polymorphic by nature. So, method selection for execution, totally depends upon object pointed by this. Therefore, invoking method method2() from parent class invokes method2() of child class, as the this points to object of child class. The definition of this doesn't changes, irrespective of whichever class it's used.

PS. unlike methods, member variables of class are not polymorphic.

How to vertically align an image inside a div

You can use this:

 .loaderimage {
    position: absolute;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    width: 60px;
    height: 60px;
    margin-top: -30px; /* 50% of the height */
    margin-left: -30px;
 }

How do I pass multiple parameter in URL?

This

url = new URL("http://10.0.2.2:8080/HelloServlet/PDRS?param1="+lat+"&param2="+lon);

must work. For whatever strange reason1, you need ? before the first parameter and & before the following ones.

Using a compound parameter like

url = new URL("http://10.0.2.2:8080/HelloServlet/PDRS?param1="+lat+"_"+lon);

would work, too, but is surely not nice. You can't use a space there as it's prohibited in an URL, but you could encode it as %20 or + (but this is even worse style).

1 Stating that ? separates the path and the parameters and that & separates parameters from each other does not explain anything about the reason. Some RFC says "use ? there and & there", but I can't see why they didn't choose the same character.

Add class to an element in Angular 4

you can try this without any java script you can do that just by using CSS

img:active,
img:focus,
img:hover{
border: 10px solid red !important
}

of if your case is to add any other css class by clicking you can use query selector like

<img id="image1" ng-click="changeClass(id)" >
<img id="image2" ng-click="changeClass(id)" >
<img id="image3" ng-click="changeClass(id)" >
<img id="image3" ng-click="changeClass(id)" >

in controller first search for any image with red border and remove it then by passing the image id add the border class to that image

$scope.changeClass = function(id){
angular.element(document.querySelector('.some-class').removeClass('.some-class');
angular.element(document.querySelector(id)).addClass('.some-class');
}

Convert java.util.Date to java.time.LocalDate

If you are using ThreeTen Backport including ThreeTenABP

    Date input = new Date(); // Imagine your Date here
    LocalDate date = DateTimeUtils.toInstant(input)
            .atZone(ZoneId.systemDefault())
            .toLocalDate();

If you are using the backport of JSR 310, either you haven’t got a Date.toInstant() method or it won’t give you the org.threeten.bp.Instant that you need for you further conversion. Instead you need to use the DateTimeUtils class that comes as part of the backport. The remainder of the conversion is the same, so so is the explanation.

Redirect from a view to another view

It's because your statement does not produce output.

Besides all the warnings of Darin and lazy (they are right); the question still offerst something to learn.

If you want to execute methods that don't directly produce output, you do:

@{ Response.Redirect("~/Account/LogIn?returnUrl=Products");}

This is also true for rendering partials like:

@{ Html.RenderPartial("_MyPartial"); }

Numpy Resize/Rescale Image

import cv2
import numpy as np

image_read = cv2.imread('filename.jpg',0)
original_image = np.asarray(image_read)
width , height = 452,452
resize_image = np.zeros(shape=(width,height))

for W in range(width):
    for H in range(height):
        new_width = int( W * original_image.shape[0] / width )
        new_height = int( H * original_image.shape[1] / height )
        resize_image[W][H] = original_image[new_width][new_height]

print("Resized image size : " , resize_image.shape)

cv2.imshow(resize_image)
cv2.waitKey(0)

What is the facade design pattern?

A facade exposes simplified functions that are mostly called and the implementation conceals the complexity that clients would otherwise have to deal with. In general the implementation uses multiple packages, classes and function there in. Well written facades make direct access of other classes rare. For example when I visit an ATM and withdraw some amount. The ATM hides whether it is going straight to the owned bank or is it going over a negotiated network for an external bank. The ATM acts like a facade consuming multiple devices and sub-systems that as a client I do not have to directly deal with.

Difference between Statement and PreparedStatement

Statement interface executes static SQL statements without parameters

PreparedStatement interface (extending Statement) executes a precompiled SQL statement with/without parameters

  1. Efficient for repeated executions

  2. It is precompiled so it's faster

C++ [Error] no matching function for call to

to add to John's answer:

what you want to pass to the shuffle function is a deck of cards from the class deckOfCards that you've declared in main; however, the deck of cards or vector<Card> deck that you've declared in your class is private, so not accessible from outside the class. this means you'd want a getter function, something like this:

class deckOfCards
{
    private:
        vector<Card> deck;

    public:
        deckOfCards();
        static int count;
        static int next;
        void shuffle(vector<Card>& deck);
        Card dealCard();
        bool moreCards();
        vector<Card>& getDeck() {   //GETTER
            return deck;
        }
};

this will in turn allow you to call your shuffle function from main like this:

deckOfCards cardDeck; // create DeckOfCards object
cardDeck.shuffle(cardDeck.getDeck()); // shuffle the cards in the deck

however, you have more problems, specifically when calling cout. first, you're calling the dealCard function wrongly; as dealCard is a memeber function of a class, you should be calling it like this cardDeck.dealCard(); instead of this dealCard(cardDeck);.

now, we come to your second problem - print to standard output. you're trying to print your deal card, which is an object of type Card by using the following instruction:

cout << cardDeck.dealCard();// deal the cards in the deck

yet, the cout doesn't know how to print it, as it's not a standard type. this means you should overload your << operator to print whatever you want it to print when calling with a Card type.

How to prevent Right Click option using jquery

What is the best way to get the count/length/size of an iterator?

for Java 8 you could use,

public static int getIteratorSize(Iterator iterator){
        AtomicInteger count = new AtomicInteger(0);
        iterator.forEachRemaining(element -> {
            count.incrementAndGet();
        });
        return count.get();
    }

'do...while' vs. 'while'

do while is if you want to run the code block at least once. while on the other hand won't always run depending on the criteria specified.

Python open() gives FileNotFoundError/IOError: Errno 2 No such file or directory

Most likely, the problem is that you're using a relative file path to open the file, but the current working directory isn't set to what you think it is.

It's a common misconception that relative paths are relative to the location of the python script, but this is untrue. Relative file paths are always relative to the current working directory, and the current working directory doesn't have to be the location of your python script.

You have three options:

  • Use an absolute path to open the file:

    file = open(r'C:\path\to\your\file.yaml')

  • Generate the path to the file relative to your python script:

    from pathlib import Path

    script_location = Path(__file__).absolute().parent
    file_location = script_location / 'file.yaml'
    file = file_location.open()

    (See also: How do I get the path and name of the file that is currently executing?)

  • Change the current working directory before opening the file:

    import os

    os.chdir(r'C:\path\to\your\file')
    file = open('file.yaml')

Other common mistakes that could cause a "file not found" error include:

  • Accidentally using escape sequences in a file path:

    path = 'C:\Users\newton\file.yaml'
    # Incorrect! The '\n' in 'Users\newton' is a line break character!

    To avoid making this mistake, remember to use raw string literals for file paths:

    path = r'C:\Users\newton\file.yaml'
    # Correct!

    (See also: Windows path in Python)

  • Forgetting that Windows doesn't display file extensions:

    Since Windows doesn't display known file extensions, sometimes when you think your file is named file.yaml, it's actually named file.yaml.yaml. Double-check your file's extension.

IF EXISTS before INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE for optimization

That is not useful for just one update/delete/insert.
Possibly adds performance if several operators after if condition.
In last case better write

update a set .. where ..
if @@rowcount > 0
begin
    ..
end

console.log(output);

Hidden Columns in jqGrid

You can use the following code to hide a table column..

JQuery("tableName").hideCol("colName");

And you can use the following code to show it again.

JQuery("tableName").showCol("colName");

For your question, you can call the hideCol() code on the document.ready(), and you can bind the showCol() code on the dialog's edit/click event.

How to Install pip for python 3.7 on Ubuntu 18?

I installed pip3 using

python3.7 -m pip install pip

But upon using pip3 to install other dependencies, it was using python3.6.
You can check the by typing pip3 --version

Hence, I used pip3 like this (stated in one of the above answers):

python3.7 -m pip install <module>

or use it like this:

python3.7 -m pip install -r requirements.txt

I made a bash alias for later use in ~/.bashrc file as alias pip3='python3.7 -m pip'. If you use alias, don't forget to source ~/.bashrc after making the changes and saving it.

jQuery onclick toggle class name

jQuery has a toggleClass function:

<button class="switch">Click me</button>

<div class="text-block collapsed pressed">some text</div>

<script>
    $('.switch').on('click', function(e) {
      $('.text-block').toggleClass("collapsed pressed"); //you can list several class names
      e.preventDefault();
    });
</script>

How to develop a soft keyboard for Android?

Some tips:

About your questions:

An inputMethod is basically an Android Service, so yes, you can do HTTP and all the stuff you can do in a Service.

You can open Activities and dialogs from the InputMethod. Once again, it's just a Service.

I've been developing an IME, so ask again if you run into an issue.

How do I find the index of a character in a string in Ruby?

index(substring [, offset]) ? fixnum or nil
index(regexp [, offset]) ? fixnum or nil

Returns the index of the first occurrence of the given substring or pattern (regexp) in str. Returns nil if not found. If the second parameter is present, it specifies the position in the string to begin the search.

"hello".index('e')             #=> 1
"hello".index('lo')            #=> 3
"hello".index('a')             #=> nil
"hello".index(?e)              #=> 1
"hello".index(/[aeiou]/, -3)   #=> 4

Prevent any form of page refresh using jQuery/Javascript

#1 can be implemented via window.onbeforeunload.

For example:

<script type="text/javascript">
    window.onbeforeunload = function() {
        return "Dude, are you sure you want to leave? Think of the kittens!";
    }
</script>

The user will be prompted with the message, and given an option to stay on the page or continue on their way. This is becoming more common. Stack Overflow does this if you try to navigate away from a page while you are typing a post. You can't completely stop the user from reloading, but you can make it sound real scary if they do.

#2 is more or less impossible. Even if you tracked sessions and user logins, you still wouldn't be able to guarantee that you were detecting a second tab correctly. For example, maybe I have one window open, then close it. Now I open a new window. You would likely detect that as a second tab, even though I already closed the first one. Now your user can't access the first window because they closed it, and they can't access the second window because you're denying them.

In fact, my bank's online system tries real hard to do #2, and the situation described above happens all the time. I usually have to wait until the server-side session expires before I can use the banking system again.

Why does the Google Play store say my Android app is incompatible with my own device?

I ran into this as well - I did all of my development on a Lenovo IdeaTab A2107A-F and could run development builds on it, and even release signed APKs (installed with adb install) with no issues. Once it was published in Alpha test mode and available on Google Play I received the "incompatible with your device" error message.

It turns out I had placed in my AndroidManifest.xml the following from a tutorial:

<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera" />
<uses-feature android:name="android.hardware.camera.autofocus" />
<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.CAMERA" />

Well, the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107A-F doesn't have an autofocusing camera on it (which I learned from http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Lenovo-IdeaTab-A2107_id7611, under Cons: lacks autofocus camera). Regardless of whether I was using that feature, Google Play said no. Once that was removed I rebuilt my APK, uploaded it to Google Play, and sure enough my IdeaTab was now in the compatible devices list.

So, double-check every <uses-feature> and if you've been doing some copy-paste from the web check again. Odds are you requested some feature you aren't even using.

How to keep the console window open in Visual C++?

For makefile projects, the accepted solution fails, due to a bug in Visual Studio (which is present at least up until version 2012 - I haven't yet tested 2013). This bug is detailed here.

In order to have the console pause after program termination on a makefile project, perform these steps (this may differ for versions other than 2010 - 2012):

1) Pass /SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE to the linker. - EDIT: see below.

2) Open your project file (.vcxproj) in a text editor.

3) Inside the root <project> tag, insert the following:

<ItemDefinitionGroup>
  <Link>
    <SubSystem>Console</SubSystem>
  </Link>
</ItemDefinitionGroup>

4) Reload the project in your solution.

5) Run the program without debugging (CTRL + F5).

EDIT:

As per my comment below, setting the linker option /SUBSYSTEM:CONSOLE is actually irrelevant for makefile projects (and not necessarily even possible, if you are using a compiler other than MSVC). All that matters is that the setting is added to the .vcxproj file, as per step 3 above.

How to perform an SQLite query within an Android application?

Try this, this works for my code name is a String:

cursor = rdb.query(true, TABLE_PROFILE, new String[] { ID,
    REMOTEID, FIRSTNAME, LASTNAME, EMAIL, GENDER, AGE, DOB,
    ROLEID, NATIONALID, URL, IMAGEURL },
    LASTNAME + " like ?", new String[]{ name+"%" }, null, null, null, null);

For-loop vs while loop in R

Because 1 is numeric, but not integer (i.e. it's a floating point number), and 1:6000 is numeric and integer.

> print(class(1))
[1] "numeric"
> print(class(1:60000))
[1] "integer"

60000 squared is 3.6 billion, which is NOT representable in signed 32-bit integer, hence you get an overflow error:

> as.integer(60000)*as.integer(60000)
[1] NA
Warning message:
In as.integer(60000) * as.integer(60000) : NAs produced by integer overflow

3.6 billion is easily representable in floating point, however:

> as.single(60000)*as.single(60000)
[1] 3.6e+09

To fix your for code, convert to a floating point representation:

function (N)
{
    for(i in as.single(1:N)) {
        y <- i*i
    }
}

How to prevent default event handling in an onclick method?

It would be too tedious to alter function usages in all html pages to return false.

So here is a tested solution that patches only the function itself:

function callmymethod(myVal) {
    // doing custom things with myVal

    // cancel default event action
    var event = window.event || callmymethod.caller.arguments[0];
    event.preventDefault ? event.preventDefault() : (event.returnValue = false);

    return false;
}

This correctly prevents IE6, IE11 and latest Chrome from visiting href="#" after onclick event handler completes.

When and why to 'return false' in JavaScript?

When you want to trigger javascript code from an anchor tag, the onclick handler should be used rather than the javascript: pseudo-protocol. The javascript code that runs within the onclick handler must return true or false (or an expression than evalues to true or false) back to the tag itself - if it returns true, then the HREF of the anchor will be followed like a normal link. If it returns false, then the HREF will be ignored. This is why "return false;" is often included at the end of the code within an onclick handler.

jQuery append and remove dynamic table row

In addition to the other answers, I'd like to improve the removal, to something more generic:

$(this).closest('tr').remove();

This would be much better than using $(this).parent().parent().remove();, because it doesn't depend on the depth of the element. So, the structure of the row becomes much more flexible.

Parse String date in (yyyy-MM-dd) format

You are creating a Date object, which is a representation of a certain point in the timeline. This means that it will have all the parts necessary to represent it correctly, including minutes and seconds and so on. Because you initialize it from a string containing only a part of the date, the missing data will be defaulted.

I assume you are then "printing" this Date object, but without actually specifying a format like you did when parsing it. Use the same SimpleDateFormat but call the reverse method, format(Date) as Holger suggested

Can't open and lock privilege tables: Table 'mysql.user' doesn't exist

mysqld --initialize to initialize the data directory then mysqld &

If you had already launched mysqld& without mysqld --initialize you might have to delete all files in your data directory

You can also modify /etc/my.cnf to add a custom path to your data directory like this :

[mysqld]
...
datadir=/path/to/directory

Out-File -append in Powershell does not produce a new line and breaks string into characters

Out-File defaults to unicode encoding which is why you are seeing the behavior you are. Use -Encoding Ascii to change this behavior. In your case

Out-File -Encoding Ascii -append textfile.txt.

Add-Content uses Ascii and also appends by default.

"This is a test" | Add-Content textfile.txt.

As for the lack of newline: You did not send a newline so it will not write one to file.

How to take input in an array + PYTHON?

You want this - enter N and then take N number of elements.I am considering your input case is just like this

5
2 3 6 6 5

have this in this way in python 3.x (for python 2.x use raw_input() instead if input())

Python 3

n = int(input())
arr = input() # takes the whole line of n numbers
l = list(map(int,arr.split(' '))) # split those numbers with space( becomes ['2','3','6','6','5']) and then map every element into int (becomes [2,3,6,6,5])

Python 2

n = int(raw_input())
arr = raw_input() # takes the whole line of n numbers
l = list(map(int,arr.split(' '))) # split those numbers with space( becomes ['2','3','6','6','5']) and then map every element into int (becomes [2,3,6,6,5])

100% width Twitter Bootstrap 3 template

In BOOTSTRAP 4 you can use

<div class="row m-0">

Multiple radio button groups in MVC 4 Razor

I fixed a similar issue building a RadioButtonFor with pairs of text/value from a SelectList. I used a ViewBag to send the SelectList to the View, but you can use data from model too. My web application is a Blog and I have to build a RadioButton with some types of articles when he is writing a new post.

The code below was simplyfied.

List<SelectListItem> items = new List<SelectListItem>();

Dictionary<string, string> dictionary = new Dictionary<string, string>();

dictionary.Add("Texto", "1");
dictionary.Add("Foto", "2");
dictionary.Add("Vídeo", "3");

foreach (KeyValuePair<string, string> pair in objBLL.GetTiposPost())
{
    items.Add(new SelectListItem() { Text = pair.Key, Value = pair.Value, Selected = false });
}

ViewBag.TiposPost = new SelectList(items, "Value", "Text");

In the View, I used a foreach to build a radiobutton.

<div class="form-group">
    <div class="col-sm-10">
        @foreach (var item in (SelectList)ViewBag.TiposPost)
        {
            @Html.RadioButtonFor(model => model.IDTipoPost, item.Value, false)
            <label class="control-label">@item.Text</label>
        }

    </div>
</div>

Notice that I used RadioButtonFor in order to catch the option value selected by user, in the Controler, after submit the form. I also had to put the item.Text outside the RadioButtonFor in order to show the text options.

Hope it's useful!

How to check if std::map contains a key without doing insert?

Use my_map.count( key ); it can only return 0 or 1, which is essentially the Boolean result you want.

Alternately my_map.find( key ) != my_map.end() works too.

How do I vertical center text next to an image in html/css?

This might get you started.

I always fall back on this solution. Not too hack-ish and gets the job done.

EDIT: I should point out that you might achieve the effect you want with the following code (forgive the inline styles; they should be in a separate sheet). It seems that the default alignment on an image (baseline) will cause the text to align to the baseline; setting that to middle gets things to render nicely, at least in FireFox 3.

jQuery - get all divs inside a div with class ".container"

To get all divs under 'container', use the following:

$(".container>div")  //or
$(".container").children("div");

You can stipulate a specific #id instead of div to get a particular one.

You say you want a div with an 'undefined' id. if I understand you right, the following would achieve this:

$(".container>div[id=]")

In practice, what are the main uses for the new "yield from" syntax in Python 3.3?

This code defines a function fixed_sum_digits returning a generator enumerating all six digits numbers such that the sum of digits is 20.

def iter_fun(sum, deepness, myString, Total):
    if deepness == 0:
        if sum == Total:
            yield myString
    else:
        for i in range(min(10, Total - sum + 1)):
            yield from iter_fun(sum + i,deepness - 1,myString + str(i),Total)

def fixed_sum_digits(digits, Tot):
    return iter_fun(0,digits,"",Tot)

Try to write it without yield from. If you find an effective way to do it let me know.

I think that for cases like this one: visiting trees, yield from makes the code simpler and cleaner.

WSDL vs REST Pros and Cons

To me we should be careful when we use the word web service. We should all the time specify if we are speaking of SOAP web service, REST web service or other kind of web services because we are speaking about different things here and people don't understand anymore if we named all of them web services.

Basically SOAP web services are very well established for years and they follow a strict specification that describe how to communicate with them based on the SOAP specification. Now REST web services are a bit newer and basically looks like simpler because they are not using any communication protocol. Basically what you send and receive when you use a REST web service is plain XML. People like it because they can parse the xml the way they want without having to deal with a more sophisticated communication protocol like SOAP.

To me REST services are almost like if you would create a servlet instead of a SOAP web service. The servlet get data in and return data out. The format of the data are xml based. We can also imagine to use something else than xml if we want. For instance tags could be used instead of xml and that would be not REST anymore but something else (Could be even lighter in term of weight because xml is not light by nature). Would we call that still a web service? Yes we could but that will not follow any current standard and this is the main issue here if we start to call everything web services but we can do it the way we want then we are loosing on the interoperability side of the things. That means that the format of the data that is exchanged with the web service is not standardized anymore. That requires then that server and client agree on the format of the data whereas with SOAP this is all predefined already and server and client can interoperate without to know each other because they follow the same standard.

What people don't like with SOAP is that they have hard time to understand it and they cannot generate the queries manually. Computers can do that very well however so this is where we need to be clear: are web services queries and response supposed to be used directly by the end users or do we agree that web services are underneath API called by computer systems based on some normalized standards?

How to change the default collation of a table?

MySQL has 4 levels of collation: server, database, table, column. If you change the collation of the server, database or table, you don't change the setting for each column, but you change the default collations.

E.g if you change the default collation of a database, each new table you create in that database will use that collation, and if you change the default collation of a table, each column you create in that table will get that collation.

How do I send email with JavaScript without opening the mail client?

Directly From Client

Send an email using only JavaScript

in short:
1. register for Mandrill to get an API key
2. load jQuery
3. use $.ajax to send an email

Like this -

function sendMail() {
    $.ajax({
      type: 'POST',
      url: 'https://mandrillapp.com/api/1.0/messages/send.json',
      data: {
        'key': 'YOUR API KEY HERE',
        'message': {
          'from_email': '[email protected]',
          'to': [
              {
                'email': '[email protected]',
                'name': 'RECIPIENT NAME (OPTIONAL)',
                'type': 'to'
              }
            ],
          'autotext': 'true',
          'subject': 'YOUR SUBJECT HERE!',
          'html': 'YOUR EMAIL CONTENT HERE! YOU CAN USE HTML!'
        }
      }
     }).done(function(response) {
       console.log(response); // if you're into that sorta thing
     });
}

https://medium.com/design-startups/b53319616782

Note: Keep in mind that your API key is visible to anyone, so any malicious user may use your key to send out emails that can eat up your quota.

Indirect via Your Server - secure

To overcome the above vulnerability, you can modify your own server to send the email after session based authentication.

node.js - https://www.npmjs.org/package/node-mandrill

var mandrill = require('node-mandrill')('<your API Key>');

function sendEmail ( _name, _email, _subject, _message) {
    mandrill('/messages/send', {
        message: {
            to: [{email: _email , name: _name}],
            from_email: '[email protected]',
            subject: _subject,
            text: _message
        }
    }, function(error, response){
        if (error) console.log( error );
        else console.log(response);
    });
}

// define your own email api which points to your server.

app.post( '/api/sendemail/', function(req, res){

    var _name = req.body.name;
    var _email = req.body.email;
    var _subject = req.body.subject;
    var _messsage = req.body.message;

    //implement your spam protection or checks.

    sendEmail ( _name, _email, _subject, _message );

Write Base64-encoded image to file

With Java 8's Base64 API

byte[] decodedImg = Base64.getDecoder()
                    .decode(encodedImg.getBytes(StandardCharsets.UTF_8));
Path destinationFile = Paths.get("/path/to/imageDir", "myImage.jpg");
Files.write(destinationFile, decodedImg);

If your encoded image starts with something like data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0..., you'll have to remove the part. See this answer for an easy way to do that.

How to pass boolean values to a PowerShell script from a command prompt

Try setting the type of your parameter to [bool]:

param
(
    [int]$Turn = 0
    [bool]$Unity = $false
)

switch ($Unity)
{
    $true { "That was true."; break }
    default { "Whatever it was, it wasn't true."; break }
}

This example defaults $Unity to $false if no input is provided.

Usage

.\RunScript.ps1 -Turn 1 -Unity $false

How does the keyword "use" work in PHP and can I import classes with it?

Namespace is use to define the path to a specific file containing a class e.g.

namespace album/className;

class className{
//enter class properties and methods here
}

You can then include this specific class into another php file by using the keyword "use" like this:

use album/className;

class album extends classname {
//enter class properties and methods
}

NOTE: Do not use the path to the file containing the class to be implements, extends of use to instantiate an object but only use the namespace.

How to use Git and Dropbox together?

I use Mercurial (or Git) + TrueCrypt + Dropbox for encrypted remote backups.

The coolest thing is that Dropbox does NOT sync the entire TrueCrypt container if you modify a small portion of your code. The sync time is roughly proportional to the amount of changes. Even though it's encrypted, the combination of TrueCrypt + Dropbox makes excellent usage of block cipher + block level sync.

Secondly, a monolithic encrypted container not just adds security, it also reduces chances of repository corruption .

Caution: However you have to be very careful about not having the container mounted while Dropbox is running. It can also be a pain to resolve conflicts if 2 different clients check-in different versions to the container. So, it's practical only for a single person using it for backups, not for a team.

Setup:

  • Create a Truecrypt container (multiple Gigabyte is fine)
  • Under Truecrypt preferences, uncheck preserve modification timestamp*.
  • Create a repo as mentioned above by Dan ( https://stackoverflow.com/a/1961515/781695 )

Usage:

  • Quit Dropbox
  • Mount the container, push your changes, unmount
  • Run dropbox

P.S. Unchecking the preserve modification timestamp tells dropbox that the file has been modified and it should be sync'd. Note that mounting the container modifies the timestamp even if you don't change any file in it. If you don't want that to happen, simply mount the volume as read-only

Tuples( or arrays ) as Dictionary keys in C#

If your consuming code can make do with an IDictionary<> interface, instead of Dictionary, my instinct would have been to use a SortedDictionary<> with a custom array comparer, ie:

class ArrayComparer<T> : IComparer<IList<T>>
    where T : IComparable<T>
{
    public int Compare(IList<T> x, IList<T> y)
    {
        int compare = 0;
        for (int n = 0; n < x.Count && n < y.Count; ++n)
        {
            compare = x[n].CompareTo(y[n]);
        }
        return compare;
    }
}

And create thus (using int[] just for concrete example's sake):

var dictionary = new SortedDictionary<int[], string>(new ArrayComparer<int>());

What is the best workaround for the WCF client `using` block issue?

Override the client's Dispose() without the need to generate a proxy class based on ClientBase, also without the need to manage channel creation and caching! (Note that WcfClient is not an ABSTRACT class and is based on ClientBase)

// No need for a generated proxy class
//using (WcfClient<IOrderService> orderService = new WcfClient<IOrderService>())
//{
//    results = orderService.GetProxy().PlaceOrder(input);
//}

public class WcfClient<TService> : ClientBase<TService>, IDisposable
    where TService : class
{
    public WcfClient()
    {
    }

    public WcfClient(string endpointConfigurationName) :
        base(endpointConfigurationName)
    {
    }

    public WcfClient(string endpointConfigurationName, string remoteAddress) :
        base(endpointConfigurationName, remoteAddress)
    {
    }

    public WcfClient(string endpointConfigurationName, System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress remoteAddress) :
        base(endpointConfigurationName, remoteAddress)
    {
    }

    public WcfClient(System.ServiceModel.Channels.Binding binding, System.ServiceModel.EndpointAddress remoteAddress) :
        base(binding, remoteAddress)
    {
    }

    protected virtual void OnDispose()
    {
        bool success = false;

        if ((base.Channel as IClientChannel) != null)
        {
            try
            {
                if ((base.Channel as IClientChannel).State != CommunicationState.Faulted)
                {
                    (base.Channel as IClientChannel).Close();
                    success = true;
                }
            }
            finally
            {
                if (!success)
                {
                    (base.Channel as IClientChannel).Abort();
                }
            }
        }
    }

    public TService GetProxy()
    {
        return this.Channel as TService;
    }

    public void Dispose()
    {
        OnDispose();

How do I programmatically get the GUID of an application in .NET 2.0

You should be able to read the GUID attribute of the assembly via reflection. This will get the GUID for the current assembly

Assembly asm = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly();
var attribs = (asm.GetCustomAttributes(typeof(GuidAttribute), true));
Console.WriteLine((attribs[0] as GuidAttribute).Value);

You can replace the GuidAttribute with other attributes as well, if you want to read things like AssemblyTitle, AssemblyVersion, etc.

You can also load another assembly (Assembly.LoadFrom and all) instead of getting the current assembly - if you need to read these attributes of external assemblies (for example, when loading a plugin).

PHP expects T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM?

For me this happened within a class function.

In PHP 5.3 and above $this::$defaults worked fine; when I swapped the code into a server that for whatever reason had a lower version number it threw this error.

The solution, in my case, was to use the keyword self instead of $this:

self::$defaults works just fine.

CSS Animation and Display None

How do I have a div not take up space until it is timed to come in (using CSS for the timing.)

Here is my solution to the same problem.

Moreover I have an onclick on the last frame loading another slideshow, and it must not be clickable until the last frame is visible.

Basically my solution is to keep the div 1 pixel high using a scale(0.001), zooming it when I need it. If you don't like the zoom effect you can restore the opacity to 1 after zooming the slide.

#Slide_TheEnd {

    -webkit-animation-delay: 240s;
    animation-delay: 240s;

    -moz-animation-timing-function: linear;
    -webkit-animation-timing-function: linear;
    animation-timing-function: linear;

    -moz-animation-duration: 20s;
    -webkit-animation-duration: 20s;
    animation-duration: 20s;

    -moz-animation-name: Slide_TheEnd;
    -webkit-animation-name: Slide_TheEnd;
    animation-name: Slide_TheEnd;

    -moz-animation-iteration-count: 1;
    -webkit-animation-iteration-count: 1;
    animation-iteration-count: 1;

    -moz-animation-direction: normal;
    -webkit-animation-direction: normal;
    animation-direction: normal;

    -moz-animation-fill-mode: forwards;
    -webkit-animation-fill-mode: forwards;
    animation-fill-mode: forwards;

    transform: scale(0.001);
    background: #cf0;
    text-align: center;
    font-size: 10vh;
    opacity: 0;
}

@-moz-keyframes Slide_TheEnd {
    0% { opacity: 0;  transform: scale(0.001); }
    10% { opacity: 1; transform: scale(1); }
    95% { opacity: 1; transform: scale(1); }
    100% { opacity: 0;  transform: scale(0.001); }
}

Other keyframes are removed for the sake of bytes. Please disregard the odd coding, it is made by a php script picking values from an array and str_replacing a template: I'm too lazy to retype everything for every proprietary prefix on a 100+ divs slideshow.

How to convert wstring into string?

I spent many sad days trying to come up with a way to do this for C++17, which deprecated code_cvt facets, and this is the best I was able to come up with by combining code from a few different sources:

setlocale( LC_ALL, "en_US.UTF-8" ); //Invoked in main()

std::string wideToMultiByte( std::wstring const & wideString )
{
     std::string ret;
     std::string buff( MB_CUR_MAX, '\0' );

     for ( wchar_t const & wc : wideString )
     {
         int mbCharLen = std::wctomb( &buff[ 0 ], wc );

         if ( mbCharLen < 1 ) { break; }

         for ( int i = 0; i < mbCharLen; ++i )
         {
             ret += buff[ i ];
         }
     }

     return ret;
 }

 std::wstring multiByteToWide( std::string const & multiByteString )
 {
     std::wstring ws( multiByteString.size(), L' ' );
     ws.resize(
         std::mbstowcs( &ws[ 0 ],
             multiByteString.c_str(),
             multiByteString.size() ) );

     return ws;
 }

I tested this code on Windows 10, and at least for my purposes, it seems to work fine. Please don't lynch me if this doesn't consider some crazy edge cases that you might need to handle, I'm sure someone with more experience can improve on this! :-)

Also, credit where it's due:

A . is a regex meta-character to match any character(except newline). To match a literal period, you need to escape it.

How to use regex in file find

Start with:

find . -name '*.log.*.zip' -a -mtime +1

You may not need a regex, try:

You will want the +1 in order to match 1, 2, 3 ...

Change the selected value of a drop-down list with jQuery

These solutions seem to assume that each item in your drop down lists has a val() value relating to their position in the drop down list.

Things are a little more complicated if this isn't the case.

To read the selected index of a drop down list, you would use this:

$("#dropDownList").prop("selectedIndex");

To set the selected index of a drop down list, you would use this:

$("#dropDownList").prop("selectedIndex", 1);

Note that the prop() feature requires JQuery v1.6 or later.

Let's see how you would use these two functions.

Supposing you had a drop down list of month names.

<select id="listOfMonths">
  <option id="JAN">January</option>
  <option id="FEB">February</option>
  <option id="MAR">March</option>
</select>

You could add a "Previous Month" and "Next Month" button, which looks at the currently selected drop down list item, and changes it to the previous/next month:

<button id="btnPrevMonth" title="Prev" onclick="btnPrevMonth_Click();return false;" />
<button id="btnNextMonth" title="Next" onclick="btnNextMonth_Click();return false;" />

And here's the JavaScript which these buttons would run:

function btnPrevMonth_Click() {
    var selectedIndex = $("#listOfMonths").prop("selectedIndex");
    if (selectedIndex > 0) {
        $("#listOfMonths").prop("selectedIndex", selectedIndex - 1);
    }
}
function btnNextMonth_Click() {
    // Note: the JQuery "prop" function requires JQuery v1.6 or later
    var selectedIndex = $("#listOfMonths").prop("selectedIndex");
    var itemsInDropDownList = $("#listOfMonths option").length;

    // If we're not already selecting the last item in the drop down list, then increment the SelectedIndex
    if (selectedIndex < (itemsInDropDownList - 1)) {
        $("#listOfMonths").prop("selectedIndex", selectedIndex + 1);
    }
}

My site is also useful for showing how to populate a drop down list with JSON data:

Fastest way to check a string is alphanumeric in Java

I've written the tests that compare using regular expressions (as per other answers) against not using regular expressions. Tests done on a quad core OSX10.8 machine running Java 1.6

Interestingly using regular expressions turns out to be about 5-10 times slower than manually iterating over a string. Furthermore the isAlphanumeric2() function is marginally faster than isAlphanumeric(). One supports the case where extended Unicode numbers are allowed, and the other is for when only standard ASCII numbers are allowed.

public class QuickTest extends TestCase {

    private final int reps = 1000000;

    public void testRegexp() {
        for(int i = 0; i < reps; i++)
            ("ab4r3rgf"+i).matches("[a-zA-Z0-9]");
    }

public void testIsAlphanumeric() {
    for(int i = 0; i < reps; i++)
        isAlphanumeric("ab4r3rgf"+i);
}

public void testIsAlphanumeric2() {
    for(int i = 0; i < reps; i++)
        isAlphanumeric2("ab4r3rgf"+i);
}

    public boolean isAlphanumeric(String str) {
        for (int i=0; i<str.length(); i++) {
            char c = str.charAt(i);
            if (!Character.isLetterOrDigit(c))
                return false;
        }

        return true;
    }

    public boolean isAlphanumeric2(String str) {
        for (int i=0; i<str.length(); i++) {
            char c = str.charAt(i);
            if (c < 0x30 || (c >= 0x3a && c <= 0x40) || (c > 0x5a && c <= 0x60) || c > 0x7a)
                return false;
        }
        return true;
    }

SSLHandshakeException: No subject alternative names present

Unlike some browsers, Java follows the HTTPS specification strictly when it comes to the server identity verification (RFC 2818, Section 3.1) and IP addresses.

When using a host name, it's possible to fall back to the Common Name in the Subject DN of the server certificate, instead of using the Subject Alternative Name.

When using an IP address, there must be a Subject Alternative Name entry (of type IP address, not DNS name) in the certificate.

You'll find more details about the specification and how to generate such a certificate in this answer.

What is a bus error?

A segfault is accessing memory that you're not allowed to access. It's read-only, you don't have permission, etc...

A bus error is trying to access memory that can't possibly be there. You've used an address that's meaningless to the system, or the wrong kind of address for that operation.

What's the best strategy for unit-testing database-driven applications?

I have been asking this question for a long time, but I think there is no silver bullet for that.

What I currently do is mocking the DAO objects and keeping a in memory representation of a good collection of objects that represent interesting cases of data that could live on the database.

The main problem I see with that approach is that you're covering only the code that interacts with your DAO layer, but never testing the DAO itself, and in my experience I see that a lot of errors happen on that layer as well. I also keep a few unit tests that run against the database (for the sake of using TDD or quick testing locally), but those tests are never run on my continuous integration server, since we don't keep a database for that purpose and I think tests that run on CI server should be self-contained.

Another approach I find very interesting, but not always worth since is a little time consuming, is to create the same schema you use for production on an embedded database that just runs within the unit testing.

Even though there's no question this approach improves your coverage, there are a few drawbacks, since you have to be as close as possible to ANSI SQL to make it work both with your current DBMS and the embedded replacement.

No matter what you think is more relevant for your code, there are a few projects out there that may make it easier, like DbUnit.

Making a flex item float right

You don't need floats. In fact, they're useless because floats are ignored in flexbox.

You also don't need CSS positioning.

There are several flex methods available. auto margins have been mentioned in another answer.

Here are two other options:

  • Use justify-content: space-between and the order property.
  • Use justify-content: space-between and reverse the order of the divs.

Connect to mysql on Amazon EC2 from a remote server

While creating the user like 'myuser'@'localhost', the user gets limited to be connected only from localhost. Create a user only for remote access and use your remote client IP address from where you will be connecting to the MySQL server. If you can bear the risk of allowing connections from all remote hosts (usually when using dynamic IP address), you can use 'myuser'@'%'. I did this, and also removed bind_address from /etc/mysql/mysql.cnf (Ubuntu) and now it connects flawlessly.

How do you send an HTTP Get Web Request in Python?

In Python, you can use urllib2 (http://docs.python.org/2/library/urllib2.html) to do all of that work for you.

Simply enough:

import urllib2
f =  urllib2.urlopen(url)
print f.read()

Will print the received HTTP response.

To pass GET/POST parameters the urllib.urlencode() function can be used. For more information, you can refer to the Official Urllib2 Tutorial

Inner join vs Where

It is true that, functionally, both queries should be processed the same way. However, experience has shown that if you are selecting from views that use the new join syntax, it is important to structure your queries using it as well. Oracle's optimizer can get confused if a view uses a "join" statement, but a query accessing the view uses the traditional method of joining in the "where" clause.

How to concatenate two IEnumerable<T> into a new IEnumerable<T>?

The Concat method will return an object which implements IEnumerable<T> by returning an object (call it Cat) whose enumerator will attempt to use the two passed-in enumerable items (call them A and B) in sequence. If the passed-in enumerables represent sequences which will not change during the lifetime of Cat, and which can be read from without side-effects, then Cat may be used directly. Otherwise, it may be a good idea to call ToList() on Cat and use the resulting List<T> (which will represent a snapshot of the contents of A and B).

Some enumerables take a snapshot when enumeration begins, and will return data from that snapshot if the collection is modified during enumeration. If B is such an enumerable, then any change to B which occurs before Cat has reached the end of A will show up in Cat's enumeration, but changes which occur after that will not. Such semantics may likely be confusing; taking a snapshot of Cat can avoid such issues.

What's "tools:context" in Android layout files?

That attribute is basically the persistence for the "Associated Activity" selection above the layout. At runtime, a layout is always associated with an activity. It can of course be associated with more than one, but at least one. In the tool, we need to know about this mapping (which at runtime happens in the other direction; an activity can call setContentView(layout) to display a layout) in order to drive certain features.

Right now, we're using it for one thing only: Picking the right theme to show for a layout (since the manifest file can register themes to use for an activity, and once we know the activity associated with the layout, we can pick the right theme to show for the layout). In the future, we'll use this to drive additional features - such as rendering the action bar (which is associated with the activity), a place to add onClick handlers, etc.

The reason this is a tools: namespace attribute is that this is only a designtime mapping for use by the tool. The layout itself can be used by multiple activities/fragments etc. We just want to give you a way to pick a designtime binding such that we can for example show the right theme; you can change it at any time, just like you can change our listview and fragment bindings, etc.

(Here's the full changeset which has more details on this)

And yeah, the link Nikolay listed above shows how the new configuration chooser looks and works

One more thing: The "tools" namespace is special. The android packaging tool knows to ignore it, so none of those attributes will be packaged into the APK. We're using it for extra metadata in the layout. It's also where for example the attributes to suppress lint warnings are stored -- as tools:ignore.

How do I center content in a div using CSS?

Update 2020:

There are several options available*:

*Disclaimer: This list may not be complete.

Using Flexbox
Nowadays, we can use flexbox. It is quite a handy alternative to the css-transform option. I would use this solution almost always. If it is just one element maybe not, but for example if I had to support an array of data e.g. rows and columns and I want them to be relatively centered in the very middle.

_x000D_

Using CSS 2D-Transform
This is still a good option, was also the accepted solution back in 2015. It is very slim and simple to apply and does not mess with the layouting of other elements.

_x000D_
_x000D_
.boxes {
  position: relative;
}

.box {
  position: relative;
  display: inline-block;
  float: left;
  width: 200px;
  height: 200px;
  font-weight: bold;
  color: #333;
  margin-right: 10px;
  margin-bottom: 10px;
  background-color: #eaeaea;
}

.h-center {
  text-align: center;
}

.v-center span {
  position: absolute;
  left: 0;
  right: 0;
  top: 50%;
  transform: translate(0, -50%);
}

Note: This does also work with :after and :before pseudo-elements.

Using Grid
This might just be an overkill, but it depends on your DOM. If you want to use grid anyway, then why not. It is very powerful alternative and you are really maximum flexible with the design.

Note: To align the items vertically we use flexbox in combination with grid. But we could also use display: grid on the items.

.grid {
  display: grid;
  width: 400px;
  grid-template-rows: 100px;

  grid-gap: 3px;
  align-items: center;
  justify-content: center;
  background-color: #eaeaea;
  border: 1px dotted #333;
}

.item {
  display: flex;
  justify-content: center;
  align-items: center;
  border: 1px dotted #333;
  box-sizing: border-box;
}

.item-large {
  height: 80px;
}

What causes javac to issue the "uses unchecked or unsafe operations" warning

I just want to add one example of the kind of unchecked warning I see quite often. If you use classes that implement an interface like Serializable, often you will call methods that return objects of the interface, and not the actual class. If the class being returned must be cast to a type based on generics, you can get this warning.

Here is a brief (and somewhat silly) example to demonstrate:

import java.io.Serializable;

public class SimpleGenericClass<T> implements Serializable {

    public Serializable getInstance() {
        return this;
    }

    // @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    public static void main() {

        SimpleGenericClass<String> original = new SimpleGenericClass<String>();

        //  java: unchecked cast
        //    required: SimpleGenericClass<java.lang.String>
        //    found:    java.io.Serializable
        SimpleGenericClass<String> returned =
                (SimpleGenericClass<String>) original.getInstance();
    }
}

getInstance() returns an object that implements Serializable. This must be cast to the actual type, but this is an unchecked cast.

Jquery check if element is visible in viewport

According to the documentation for that plugin, .visible() returns a boolean indicating if the element is visible. So you'd use it like this:

if ($('#element').visible(true)) {
    // The element is visible, do something
} else {
    // The element is NOT visible, do something else
}

Rename package in Android Studio

This I believe what you are looking for is Refactor > Move. You can also press F6.

You will get two popups. Make sure you select rename package on both. After that you will get a pop up to place the new package name.

Please note that if your package name is, for example, com.example.android.projectname then this will let you change com.example.android to something else.

One more thing, this will update the applicationId in your build.gradle as well. Just make sure that the checkboxes for "search in comments and strings" and "search for text occurrences" are both checked for it to work.

Installed SSL certificate in certificate store, but it's not in IIS certificate list

If you are using Godaddy certificate, then the issue is that the machine on which the certificate request is created and the machine on which is you are trying to complete the request are different. So do the following:

  1. Use the "generated-private-key.txt" file that was created the godaddy. Use this file to create .pfx certificate(with private key) you can use OpenSSL command:

    openssl pkcs12 -export -out {mydomain}.pfx -inkey generated-private-key.txt -in {your .crt file}

  2. The above command will generate certificate with private key {mydomain}.pfx.

  3. Import this certificate in IIS using "Import" option

Java generics - get class?

I'm able to get the Class of the generic type this way:

HTML form submit to PHP script

Here is what I find works

  1. Set a form name
  2. Use a default select option, for example...

    <option value="-1" selected>Please Select</option>

So that if the form is submitted, use of JavaScript to halt the submission process can be implemented and verified at the server too.

  1. Try to use HTML5 attributes now they are supported.

This input

<input type="submit">

should be

<input name="Submit" type="submit" value="Submit">

whenever I use a form that fails, it is a failure due to the difference in calling the button name submit and name as Submit.

You should also set your enctype attribute for your form as forms fail on my web host if it's not set.

Listen for key press in .NET console app

You can change your approach slightly - use Console.ReadKey() to stop your app, but do your work in a background thread:

static void Main(string[] args)
{
    var myWorker = new MyWorker();
    myWorker.DoStuff();
    Console.WriteLine("Press any key to stop...");
    Console.ReadKey();
}

In the myWorker.DoStuff() function you would then invoke another function on a background thread (using Action<>() or Func<>() is an easy way to do it), then immediately return.

How do I convert a numpy array to (and display) an image?

sql query with multiple where statements

You need to consider that GROUP BY happens after the WHERE clause conditions have been evaluated. And the WHERE clause always considers only one row, meaning that in your query, the meta_key conditions will always prevent any records from being selected, since one column cannot have multiple values for one row.

And what about the redundant meta_value checks? If a value is allowed to be both smaller and greater than a given value, then its actual value doesn't matter at all - the check can be omitted.

According to one of your comments you want to check for places less than a certain distance from a given location. To get correct distances, you'd actually have to use some kind of proper distance function (see e.g. this question for details). But this SQL should give you an idea how to start:

SELECT items.* FROM items i, meta_data m1, meta_data m2
    WHERE i.item_id = m1.item_id and i.item_id = m2.item_id
    AND m1.meta_key = 'lat' AND m1.meta_value >= 55 AND m1.meta_value <= 65
    AND m2.meta_key = 'lng' AND m2.meta_value >= 20 AND m2.meta_value <= 30

Remove all occurrences of char from string

You can use str = str.replace("X", ""); as mentioned before and you will be fine. For your information '' is not an empty (or a valid) character but '\0' is.

So you could use str = str.replace('X', '\0'); instead.

How do I iterate through table rows and cells in JavaScript?

Java inner class and static nested class

Inner class and nested static class in Java both are classes declared inside another class, known as top level class in Java. In Java terminology, If you declare a nested class static, it will called nested static class in Java while non static nested class are simply referred as Inner Class.

What is Inner Class in Java?

Any class which is not a top level or declared inside another class is known as nested class and out of those nested classes, class which are declared non static are known as Inner class in Java. there are three kinds of Inner class in Java:

1) Local inner class - is declared inside a code block or method.
2) Anonymous inner class - is a class which doesn't have name to reference and initialized at same place where it gets created.
3) Member inner class - is declared as non static member of outer class.

public class InnerClassTest {
    public static void main(String args[]) {
        //creating local inner class inside method i.e. main()
        class Local {
            public void name() {
                System.out.println("Example of Local class in Java");

            }
        }
        //creating instance of local inner class
        Local local = new Local();
        local.name(); //calling method from local inner class

        //Creating anonymous inner class in Java for implementing thread
        Thread anonymous = new Thread(){
            @Override
            public void run(){
                System.out.println("Anonymous class example in java");
            }
        };
        anonymous.start();

        //example of creating instance of inner class
        InnerClassTest test = new InnerClassTest();
        InnerClassTest.Inner inner = test.new Inner();
        inner.name(); //calling method of inner class
    }

     //Creating Inner class in Java
    private class Inner{
        public void name(){
            System.out.println("Inner class example in java");
        }
    }
}

What is nested static class in Java?

Nested static class is another class which is declared inside a class as member and made static. Nested static class is also declared as member of outer class and can be make private, public or protected like any other member. One of the main benefit of nested static class over inner class is that instance of nested static class is not attached to any enclosing instance of Outer class. You also don't need any instance of Outer class to create instance of nested static class in Java.

1) It can access static data members of outer class including private.
2) Static nested class cannot access non-static (instance) data member or method.

public class NestedStaticExample {
    public static void main(String args[]){
        StaticNested nested = new StaticNested();
        nested.name();
    }
    //static nested class in java
    private static class StaticNested{
        public void name(){
            System.out.println("static nested class example in java");
        }
    }
}

How to fix JSP compiler warning: one JAR was scanned for TLDs yet contained no TLDs?

The warning comes up because Tomcat scans all Jars for TLDs (Tagging Library Definitions).

Step1: To see which JARs are throwing up this warning, insert he following line to tomcat/conf/logging.properties

org.apache.jasper.servlet.TldScanner.level = FINE

Now you should be able to see warnings with a detail of which JARs are causing the intial warning

Step2 Since skipping unneeded JARs during scanning can improve startup time and JSP compilation time, we will skip un-needed JARS in the catalina.properties file. You have two options here -

  1. List all the JARs under the tomcat.util.scan.StandardJarScanFilter.jarsToSkip. But this can get cumbersome if you have a lot jars or if the jars keep changing.
  2. Alternatively, Insert tomcat.util.scan.StandardJarScanFilter.jarsToSkip=* to skip all the jars

You should now not see the above warnings and if you have a considerably large application, it should save you significant time in deploying an application.

Note: Tested in Tomcat8

Shortest distance between a point and a line segment

Here is one based on vector math; this solution will also work for higher dimensions and also report on the interection point (on the line segment).

def dist(x1,y1,x2,y2,px,py):
    a = np.array([[x1,y1]]).T
    b = np.array([[x2,y2]]).T
    x = np.array([[px,py]]).T
    tp = (np.dot(x.T, b) - np.dot(a.T, b)) / np.dot(b.T, b)
    tp = tp[0][0]
    tmp = x - (a + tp*b)
    d = np.sqrt(np.dot(tmp.T,tmp)[0][0])
    return d, a+tp*b

x1,y1=2.,2.
x2,y2=5.,5.
px,py=4.,1.

d, inters = dist(x1,y1, x2,y2, px,py)
print (d)
print (inters)

Result is

[[2.5]

Most efficient way to concatenate strings in JavaScript?

I have no comment on the concatenation itself, but I'd like to point out that @Jakub Hampl's suggestion:

For building strings in the DOM, in some cases it might be better to iteratively add to the DOM, rather then add a huge string at once.

is wrong, because it's based on a flawed test. That test never actually appends into the DOM.

This fixed test shows that creating the string all at once before rendering it is much, MUCH faster. It's not even a contest.

(Sorry this is a separate answer, but I don't have enough rep to comment on answers yet.)

Difference between "git add -A" and "git add ."

git add . equals git add -A . adds files to index only from current and children folders.

git add -A adds files to index from all folders in working tree.

How to change Screen buffer size in Windows Command Prompt from batch script

I was just searching for an answer to this exact question, come to find out the command itself adjusts the buffer!

mode con:cols=140 lines=70

The lines=70 part actually adjusts the Height in the 'Screen Buffer Size' setting, NOT the Height in the 'Window Size' setting.

Easily proven by running the command with a setting for 'lines=2500' (or whatever buffer you want) and then check the 'Properties' of the window, you'll see that indeed the buffer is now set to 2500.

My batch script ends up looking like this:

@echo off
cmd "mode con:cols=140 lines=2500"

How to create a stacked bar chart for my DataFrame using seaborn?

You could use pandas plot as @Bharath suggest:

import seaborn as sns
sns.set()
df.set_index('App').T.plot(kind='bar', stacked=True)

Output:

enter image description here

Updated:

from matplotlib.colors import ListedColormap df.set_index('App')\ .reindex_axis(df.set_index('App').sum().sort_values().index, axis=1)\ .T.plot(kind='bar', stacked=True, colormap=ListedColormap(sns.color_palette("GnBu", 10)), figsize=(12,6))

Updated Pandas 0.21.0+ reindex_axis is deprecated, use reindex

from matplotlib.colors import ListedColormap

df.set_index('App')\
  .reindex(df.set_index('App').sum().sort_values().index, axis=1)\
  .T.plot(kind='bar', stacked=True,

How do I check to see if a value is an integer in MySQL?

The best i could think of a variable is a int Is a combination with MySQL's functions CAST() and LENGTH().
This method will work on strings, integers, doubles/floats datatypes.

SELECT (LENGTH(CAST(<data> AS UNSIGNED))) = (LENGTH(<data>)) AS is_int

see demo http://sqlfiddle.com/#!9/ff40cd/44

it will fail if the column has a single character value. if column has a value 'A' then Cast('A' as UNSIGNED) will evaluate to 0 and LENGTH(0) will be 1. so LENGTH(Cast('A' as UNSIGNED))=LENGTH(0) will evaluate to 1=1 => 1

True Waqas Malik totally fogotten to test that case. the patch is.

SELECT <data>, (LENGTH(CAST(<data> AS UNSIGNED))) = CASE WHEN CAST(<data> AS UNSIGNED) = 0 THEN CAST(<data> AS UNSIGNED) ELSE (LENGTH(<data>)) END AS is_int;

What does it mean when the size of a VARCHAR2 in Oracle is declared as 1 byte?

it means ONLY one byte will be allocated per character - so if you're using multi-byte charsets, your 1 character won't fit

if you know you have to have at least room enough for 1 character, don't use the BYTE syntax unless you know exactly how much room you'll need to store that byte

when in doubt, use VARCHAR2(1 CHAR)

same thing answered here Difference between BYTE and CHAR in column datatypes

Also, in 12c the max for varchar2 is now 32k, not 4000. If you need more than that, use CLOB

in Oracle, don't use VARCHAR

 sudo apt-cache search php5-

Then fire the below command with the module name to be installed:

 sudo apt-get install name of the module

For reference, see How To Install Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP (LAMP) stack on Ubuntu.

Is there any "font smoothing" in Google Chrome?

Status of the issue, June 2014: Fixed with Chrome 37

Finally, the Chrome team will release a fix for this issue with Chrome 37 which will be released to public in July 2014. See example comparison of current stable Chrome 35 and latest Chrome 37 (early development preview) here:

enter image description here

Status of the issue, December 2013

1.) There is NO proper solution when loading fonts via @import, <link href= or Google's webfont.js. The problem is that Chrome simply requests .woff files from Google's API which render horribly. Surprisingly all other font file types render beautifully. However, there are some CSS tricks that will "smoothen" the rendered font a little bit, you'll find the workaround(s) deeper in this answer.

2.) There IS a real solution for this when self-hosting the fonts, first posted by Jaime Fernandez in another answer on this Stackoverflow page, which fixes this issue by loading web fonts in a special order. I would feel bad to simply copy his excellent answer, so please have a look there. There is also an (unproven) solution that recommends using only TTF/OTF fonts as they are now supported by nearly all browsers.

3.) The Google Chrome developer team works on that issue. As there have been several huge changes in the rendering engine there's obviously something in progress.

I've written a large blog post on that issue, feel free to have a look: How to fix the ugly font rendering in Google Chrome

Reproduceable examples

See how the example from the initial question look today, in Chrome 29:

POSITIVE EXAMPLE:

Left: Firefox 23, right: Chrome 29

POSITIVE EXAMPLE:

Top: Firefox 23, bottom: Chrome 29

NEGATIVE EXAMPLE: Chrome 30

NEGATIVE EXAMPLE: Chrome 29

Solution

Fixing the above screenshot with -webkit-text-stroke:

enter image description here

First row is default, second has:

-webkit-text-stroke: 0.3px;

Third row has:

-webkit-text-stroke: 0.6px;

So, the way to fix those fonts is simply giving them

-webkit-text-stroke: 0.Xpx;

or the RGBa syntax (by nezroy, found in the comments! Thanks!)

-webkit-text-stroke: 1px rgba(0,0,0,0.1)

There's also an outdated possibility: Give the text a simple (fake) shadow:

text-shadow: #fff 0px 1px 1px;

RGBa solution (found in Jasper Espejo's blog):

text-shadow: 0 0 1px rgba(51,51,51,0.2);

I made a blog post on this:

If you want to be updated on this issue, have a look on the according blog post: How to fix the ugly font rendering in Google Chrome. I'll post news if there're news on this.

My original answer:

This is a big bug in Google Chrome and the Google Chrome Team does know about this, see the official bug report here. Currently, in May 2013, even 11 months after the bug was reported, it's not solved. It's a strange thing that the only browser that messes up Google Webfonts is Google's own browser Chrome (!). But there's a simple workaround that will fix the problem, please see below for the solution.

STATEMENT FROM GOOGLE CHROME DEVELOPMENT TEAM, MAY 2013

Official statement in the bug report comments:

Our Windows font rendering is actively being worked on. ... We hope to have something within a milestone or two that developers can start playing with. How fast it goes to stable is, as always, all about how fast we can root out and burn down any regressions.

angularjs: allows only numbers to be typed into a text box

This solution will accept only numeric, '.' and '-'

Also this restricts the space entry on text box. I had used the directive to achieve the same.

Please have the solution on below working example.

http://jsfiddle.net/vfsHX/2697/

HTML:

<form ng-app="myapp" name="myform" novalidate>
<div ng-controller="Ctrl">
<input name="number" is-number ng-model="wks.number">
<span ng-show="!wks.validity">Value is invalid</span>
</div>

JS:

var $scope;
var app = angular.module('myapp', []);

app.controller('Ctrl', function($scope) {
    $scope.wks =  {number: 1, validity: true}
});

app.directive('isNumber', function () {
    return {
        require: 'ngModel',
        link: function (scope, element, attrs, ngModel) {
        element.bind("keydown keypress", function (event) {
          if(event.which === 32) {
            event.returnValue = false;
            return false;
          }
       });
            scope.$watch(attrs.ngModel, function(newValue,oldValue) {
                var arr = String(newValue).split("");
                if (arr.length === 0) return;
                if (arr.length === 1 && (arr[0] == '-' || arr[0] === '.' )) return;
                if (arr.length === 2 && newValue === '-.') return;
                if (isNaN(newValue)) {
                    //scope.wks.number = oldValue;
                    ngModel.$setViewValue(oldValue);
                                    ngModel.$render();
                }
            });

        }
    };
});

How to obtain image size using standard Python class (without using external library)?

Here's a way to get dimensions of a png file without needing a third-party module. From http://coreygoldberg.blogspot.com/2013/01/python-verify-png-file-and-get-image.html

import struct

def get_image_info(data):
    if is_png(data):
        w, h = struct.unpack('>LL', data[16:24])
        width = int(w)
        height = int(h)
    else:
        raise Exception('not a png image')
    return width, height

def is_png(data):
    return (data[:8] == '\211PNG\r\n\032\n'and (data[12:16] == 'IHDR'))

if __name__ == '__main__':
    with open('foo.png', 'rb') as f:
        data = f.read()

    print is_png(data)
    print get_image_info(data)

When you run this, it will return:

True
(x, y)

And another example that includes handling of JPEGs as well: http://markasread.net/post/17551554979/get-image-size-info-using-pure-python-code

How to split CSV files as per number of rows specified?

I have a one-liner answer (this example gives you 999 lines of data and one header row per file)

cat bigFile.csv | parallel --header : --pipe -N999 'cat >file_{#}.csv'

Best way to script remote SSH commands in Batch (Windows)

The -m switch of PuTTY takes a path to a script file as an argument, not a command.

Reference: https://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/htmldoc/Chapter3.html#using-cmdline-m

So you have to save your command (command_run) to a plain text file (e.g. c:\path\command.txt) and pass that to PuTTY:

putty.exe -ssh user@host -pw password -m c:\path\command.txt

Though note that you should use Plink (a command-line connection tool from PuTTY suite). It's a console application, so you can redirect its output to a file (what you cannot do with PuTTY).

A command-line syntax is identical, an output redirection added:

plink.exe -ssh user@host -pw password -m c:\path\command.txt > output.txt

See Using the command-line connection tool Plink.

And with Plink, you can actually provide the command directly on its command-line:

plink.exe -ssh user@host -pw password command > output.txt

Use grep --exclude/--include syntax to not grep through certain files

Use the shell globbing syntax:

grep pattern -r --include=\*.{cpp,h} rootdir

The syntax for --exclude is identical.

Note that the star is escaped with a backslash to prevent it from being expanded by the shell (quoting it, such as --include="*.{cpp,h}", would work just as well). Otherwise, if you had any files in the current working directory that matched the pattern, the command line would expand to something like grep pattern -r --include=foo.cpp --include=bar.h rootdir, which would only search files named foo.cpp and bar.h, which is quite likely not what you wanted.

PHP equivalent of .NET/Java's toString()

For primitives just use (string)$var or print this variable straight away. PHP is dynamically typed language and variable will be casted to string on the fly.

If you want to convert objects to strings you will need to define __toString() method that returns string. This method is forbidden to throw exceptions.

Generating Request/Response XML from a WSDL

Parasoft is a tool which can do this. I've done this very thing using this tool in my past work place. You can generate a request in Parasoft SOATest and get a response in Parasoft Virtualize. It does cost though. However Parasoft Virtualize now has a free community edition from which you can generate response messages from a WSDL. You can download from parasoft community edition

HTML 5 video or audio playlist

Try this solution, it takes an array of soundtracks and plays all of them, playlist-style, and even loops the playlist. The following uses a little Jquery to shorten getting the audio element. If you do not wish to use Jquery, replace the first line of the javascript with var audio = document.getElementById("audio"); and it will work the same.

Javascript:

var audio = $("#audio")[0];
var tracks = {
    list: ["track_01.mp3", "track_02.mp3", "track_03.mp3"], //Put any tracks you want in this array
    index: 0,
    next: function() {
        if (this.index == this.list.length - 1) this.index = 0;
        else {
            this.index += 1;
        }
    },
    play: function() {
        return this.list[this.index];
    }
}

audio.onended = function() {
    tracks.next();
    audio.src = tracks.play();
    audio.load();
    audio.play();
}

audio.src = tracks.play();

HTML:

<audio id="audio" controls>
    <source src="" />
</audio>

This will allow you to play as many songs as you want, in playlist style. Each song will start as soon as the previous one finishes. I do not believe this will work in Internet Explorer, but it's time to move on from that ancient thing anyways!

Just put any songs you want into the array tracks.list and it will play all of them one after the other. It also loops back to the first song once it's finished with the last one.

It's shorter than many of the answers, it accounts for as many tracks as you want, it's easily understandable, and it actually loads the audio before playing it (so it actually works), so I thought I would include it here. I could not find any sound files to use in a running snippet, but I tested it with 3 of my own soundtracks on Chrome and it works. The onended method, which detects the ended event, also works on all browsers except Internet Explorer according to caniuse.

NOTE: Just to be clear, this works with both audio and video.

How can I disable selected attribute from select2() dropdown Jquery?

To disable the complete select2 box, that is no deletion of already selected values and no new insertion, use:

$("id-select2").prop("disabled", true);

where id-select2 is the unique id of select2. you can also use any particular class if defined to address the dropdown.

How to fix Array indexOf() in JavaScript for Internet Explorer browsers

You should check if it's not defined using if (!Array.prototype.indexOf).

Also, your implementation of indexOf is not correct. You must use === instead of == in your if (this[i] == obj) statement, otherwise [4,"5"].indexOf(5) would be 1 according to your implementation, which is incorrect.

I recommend you use the implementation on MDC.

Named colors in matplotlib

To get a full list of colors to use in plots:

import matplotlib.colors as colors
colors_list = list(colors._colors_full_map.values())

So, you can use in that way quickly:

scatter(X,Y, color=colors_list[0])
scatter(X,Y, color=colors_list[1])
scatter(X,Y, color=colors_list[2])
...
scatter(X,Y, color=colors_list[-1])

        $geonames[$key]=$value[0];
      }
}

std::string to float or double

This answer is backing up litb in your comments. I have profound suspicions you are just not displaying the result properly.

I had the exact same thing happen to me once. I spent a whole day trying to figure out why I was getting a bad value into a 64-bit int, only to discover that printf was ignoring the second byte. You can't just pass a 64-bit value into printf like its an int.

Could not find any resources appropriate for the specified culture or the neutral culture

As far as this case is concerned check if the assembly containing resources has the default namespace set to the same text (Project->Properties->Default namespace; in VS) Check as well if the resx file has a property BuildAction set to "Embedded resource" Enjoy... ;)

Start new Activity and finish current one in Android?

You can use finish() method or you can use:

android:noHistory="true"

And then there is no need to call finish() anymore.

<activity android:name=".ClassName" android:noHistory="true" ... />

PHP save image file

Note: you should use the accepted answer if possible. It's better than mine.

It's quite easy with the GD library.

It's built in usually, you probably have it (use phpinfo() to check)

$image = imagecreatefromjpeg("http://images.websnapr.com/?size=size&key=Y64Q44QLt12u&url=http://google.com");

imagejpeg($image, "folder/file.jpg");

The above answer is better (faster) for most situations, but with GD you can also modify it in some form (cropping for example).

$image = imagecreatefromjpeg("http://images.websnapr.com/?size=size&key=Y64Q44QLt12u&url=http://google.com");
imagecopy($image, $image, 0, 140, 0, 0, imagesx($image), imagesy($image));
imagejpeg($image, "folder/file.jpg");

This only works if allow_url_fopen is true (it is by default)

What are these ^M's that keep showing up in my files in emacs?

^M at the end of line in Emacs is indicating a carriage return (\r) followed by a line feed (\n). You'll often see this if one person edits files on Windows (where end of line is the combination of carriage return and newline characters) and you edit in Unix or Linux (where end of line is only a newline character).

The combination of characters is usually not harmful. If you're using source control, you may be able to configure the text file checkin format so that lines are magically adjusted for you. Alternatively, you may be able to use checkin and checkout triggers that will automatically "fix" the files for you. Or, you might just use a tool like dos2unix to manually adjust things.

Java Refuses to Start - Could not reserve enough space for object heap

As suggested in other responses the problem is causes by exhaustion of virtual address space. A 32bit linux userspace program is usually limited to 3GB of AS; the remaining 1GB is used by the kernel (rationale: since the top 1GB is kernel fixed mapping it's not necessary to touch the page table when serving syscalls).

RHEL kernels, however, implement the so called 4GB/4GB split where the full 4GB AS is available to userspace processes at cost of a slight runtime overhead (the kernel lives in a separate 4GB virtual AS)

How do I get the current year using SQL on Oracle?

Dynamically Add Images React Webpack

So you have to add an import statement on your parent component:

class ParentClass extends Component {
  render() {
    const img = require('../images/img.png');
    return (
      <div>
        <ChildClass
          img={img}
        />
      </div>
    );
  }
}

and in the child class:

class ChildClass extends Component {
  render() {
    return (
      <div>
          <img
            src={this.props.img}
          />
      </div>
    );
  }
}

CSS position absolute full width problem

You could set both left and right property to 0. This will make the div stretch to the document width, but requires that no parent element is positioned (which is not the case, seeing as #header is position: relative;)

#site_nav_global_primary {
    position: absolute;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    right: 0;
}

Demo at: http://jsfiddle.net/xWnq2/, where I removed position:relative; from #header

Differences between Octave and MATLAB?

I just started using Octave. And I have seen people use Matlab. And one major difference as mentioned above is that Octave has a command line interface and Matlab has a GUI. According to me having a GUI is very good for debugging. In Ocatve you have to execute commands to see what is the length of a matrix is etc, but in Matlab it nicely shows everything using a good interface. But Octave is free and good for the basic tasks that I do. If you are sure that you are going to do just basic stuff or you are unsure what you need right now, then go for Octave. You can pay for the Matlab when you really feel the need.

How to stop C++ console application from exiting immediately?

You can even declare an integer at the beginning of your main() function (say int a;) and put std::cin >> a; just before the return value. So the program will keep running until you press a key and enter.

How to sort a collection by date in MongoDB?

Just a slight modification to @JohnnyHK answer

Java Generics With a Class & an Interface - Together

You can't do it with "anonymous" type parameters (ie, wildcards that use ?), but you can do it with "named" type parameters. Simply declare the type parameter at method or class level.

import java.util.List;
interface A{}
interface B{}
public class Test<E extends B & A, T extends List<E>> {
    T t;
}

How to make space between LinearLayout children?

An easy way to do it dynamically is to add padding to the children. You can just set it using .setPadding() on the object to be added. This example is adding an ImageView to a LinearLayout:

LinearLayout userFeedLinearLayout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.userFeedLinearLayout);
imageView.setImageBitmap(bitmap);
imageView.setPadding(0, 30, 0, 30);
userFeedLinearLayout.addView(imageView);

The following image shows two ImageViews that have been added with padding:

Convert CString to const char*

To convert a TCHAR CString to ASCII, use the CT2A macro - this will also allow you to convert the string to UTF8 (or any other Windows code page):

// Convert using the local code page
CString str(_T("Hello, world!"));
CT2A ascii(str);
TRACE(_T("ASCII: %S\n"), ascii.m_psz);

// Convert to UTF8
CString str(_T("Some Unicode goodness"));
CT2A ascii(str, CP_UTF8);
TRACE(_T("UTF8: %S\n"), ascii.m_psz);

// Convert to Thai code page
CString str(_T("Some Thai text"));
CT2A ascii(str, 874);
TRACE(_T("Thai: %S\n"), ascii.m_psz);

There is also a macro to convert from ASCII -> Unicode (CA2T) and you can use these in ATL/WTL apps as long as you have VS2003 or greater.

See the MSDN for more info.

Count number of times value appears in particular column in MySQL

Take a look at the Group by function.

What the group by function does is pretuty much grouping the similar value for a given field. You can then show the number of number of time that this value was groupped using the COUNT function.

MySQL Documentation

You can also use the group by function with a good number of other function define by MySQL (see the above link).
