'Missing recommended icon file - The bundle does not contain an app icon for iPhone / iPod Touch of exactly '120x120' pixels, in .png format'

For generating icons for your Xcode projects, I'd suggest you consider using SquareIcon. I believe that it makes creating app icon sets for Apple platforms very easy. Just to let you know, this is my own app.

You can drop in a generic image file of your icon (like a PNG or JPG) and generate a .appiconset file which you can put in your Xcode project's asset catalog. This removes the requirement of manually resizing a bunch of images.

Print JSON parsed object?

Use string formats;

console.log("%s %O", "My Object", obj);

Chrome has Format Specifiers with the following;

  • %s Formats the value as a string.
  • %d or %i Formats the value as an integer.
  • %f Formats the value as a floating point value.
  • %o Formats the value as an expandable DOM element (as in the Elements panel).
  • %O Formats the value as an expandable JavaScript object.
  • %c Formats the output string according to CSS styles you provide.

Firefox also has String Substitions which have similar options.

  • %o Outputs a hyperlink to a JavaScript object. Clicking the link opens an inspector.
  • %d or %i Outputs an integer. Formatting is not yet supported.
  • %s Outputs a string.
  • %f Outputs a floating-point value. Formatting is not yet supported.

Safari has printf style formatters

  • %d or %i Integer
  • %[0.N]f Floating-point value with N digits of precision
  • %o Object
  • %s String

How do I set a JLabel's background color?

You must set the setOpaque(true) to true other wise the background will not be painted to the form. I think from reading that if it is not set to true that it will paint some or not any of its pixels to the form. The background is transparent by default which seems odd to me at least but in the way of programming you have to set it to true as shown below.

      JLabel lb = new JLabel("Test");
      lb.setBackground(Color.red);
      lb.setOpaque(true); <--This line of code must be set to true or otherwise the

From the JavaDocs

setOpaque

public void setOpaque(boolean isOpaque)
  If true the component paints every pixel within its bounds. Otherwise,
  the component may not paint some or all of its pixels, allowing the underlying
  pixels to show through.
  The default value of this property is false for JComponent. However,
  the default value for this property on most standard JComponent subclasses
   (such as JButton and JTree) is look-and-feel dependent.

Parameters:
isOpaque - true if this component should be opaque

isOpaque()

How to replace values at specific indexes of a python list?

The biggest problem with your code is that it's unreadable. Python code rule number one, if it's not readable, no one's gonna look at it for long enough to get any useful information out of it. Always use descriptive variable names. Almost didn't catch the bug in your code, let's see it again with good names, slow-motion replay style:

to_modify = [5,4,3,2,1,0]
indexes = [0,1,3,5]
replacements = [0,0,0,0]

for index in indexes:
    to_modify[indexes[index]] = replacements[index]
    # to_modify[indexes[index]]
    # indexes[index]
    # Yo dawg, I heard you liked indexes, so I put an index inside your indexes
    # so you can go out of bounds while you go out of bounds.

As is obvious when you use descriptive variable names, you're indexing the list of indexes with values from itself, which doesn't make sense in this case.

Also when iterating through 2 lists in parallel I like to use the zip function (or izip if you're worried about memory consumption, but I'm not one of those iteration purists). So try this instead.

for (index, replacement) in zip(indexes, replacements):
    to_modify[index] = replacement

If your problem is only working with lists of numbers then I'd say that @steabert has the answer you were looking for with that numpy stuff. However you can't use sequences or other variable-sized data types as elements of numpy arrays, so if your variable to_modify has anything like that in it, you're probably best off doing it with a for loop.

What's better at freeing memory with PHP: unset() or $var = null

I still doubt about this, but I've tried it at my script and I'm using xdebug to know how it will affect my app memory usage. The script is set on my function like this :

function gen_table_data($serv, $coorp, $type, $showSql = FALSE, $table = 'ireg_idnts') {
    $sql = "SELECT COUNT(`operator`) `operator` FROM $table WHERE $serv = '$coorp'";
    if($showSql === FALSE) {
        $sql = mysql_query($sql) or die(mysql_error());
        $data = mysql_fetch_array($sql);
        return $data[0];
    } else echo $sql;
}

And I add unset just before the return code and it give me : 160200 then I try to change it with $sql = NULL and it give me : 160224 :)

But there is something unique on this comparative when I am not using unset() or NULL, xdebug give me 160144 as memory usage

So, I think giving line to use unset() or NULL will add process to your application and it will be better to stay origin with your code and decrease the variable that you are using as effective as you can .

Correct me if I'm wrong, thanks

How to calculate the CPU usage of a process by PID in Linux from C?

You need to parse out the data from /proc/<PID>/stat. These are the first few fields (from Documentation/filesystems/proc.txt in your kernel source):

Table 1-3: Contents of the stat files (as of 2.6.22-rc3)
..............................................................................
 Field          Content
  pid           process id
  tcomm         filename of the executable
  state state (R is running, S is sleeping, D is sleeping in an
                uninterruptible wait, Z is zombie, T is traced or stopped)
  ppid process id of the parent process
  pgrp          pgrp of the process
  sid           session id
  tty_nr        tty the process uses
  tty_pgrp      pgrp of the tty
  flags         task flags
  min_flt       number of minor faults
  cmin_flt number of minor faults with child's
  maj_flt       number of major faults
  cmaj_flt number of major faults with child's
  utime         user mode jiffies
  stime         kernel mode jiffies
  cutime user mode jiffies with child's
  cstime kernel mode jiffies with child's

You're probably after utime and/or stime. You'll also need to read the cpu line from /proc/stat, which looks like:

cpu  192369 7119 480152 122044337 14142 9937 26747 0 0

This tells you the cumulative CPU time that's been used in various categories, in units of jiffies. You need to take the sum of the values on this line to get a time_total measure.

Read both utime and stime for the process you're interested in, and read time_total from /proc/stat. Then sleep for a second or so, and read them all again. You can now calculate the CPU usage of the process over the sampling time, with:

user_util = 100 * (utime_after - utime_before) / (time_total_after - time_total_before);
sys_util = 100 * (stime_after - stime_before) / (time_total_after - time_total_before);

Make sense?

Java: Converting String to and from ByteBuffer and associated problems

Answer by Adamski is a good one and describes the steps in an encoding operation when using the general encode method (that takes a byte buffer as one of the inputs)

However, the method in question (in this discussion) is a variant of encode - encode(CharBuffer in). This is a convenience method that implements the entire encoding operation. (Please see java docs reference in P.S.)

As per the docs, This method should therefore not be invoked if an encoding operation is already in progress (which is what is happening in ZenBlender's code -- using static encoder/decoder in a multi threaded environment).

Personally, I like to use convenience methods (over the more general encode/decode methods) as they take away the burden by performing all the steps under the covers.

ZenBlender and Adamski have already suggested multiple ways options to safely do this in their comments. Listing them all here:

  • Create a new encoder/decoder object when needed for each operation (not efficient as it could lead to a large number of objects). OR,
  • Use a ThreadLocal to avoid creating new encoder/decoder for each operation. OR,
  • Synchronize the entire encoding/decoding operation (this might not be preferred unless sacrificing some concurrency is ok for your program)

P.S.

java docs references:

  1. Encode (convenience) method: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/nio/charset/CharsetEncoder.html#encode%28java.nio.CharBuffer%29
  2. General encode method: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/nio/charset/CharsetEncoder.html#encode%28java.nio.CharBuffer,%20java.nio.ByteBuffer,%20boolean%29

How to change the font size on a matplotlib plot

Update: See the bottom of the answer for a slightly better way of doing it.
Update #2: I've figured out changing legend title fonts too.
Update #3: There is a bug in Matplotlib 2.0.0 that's causing tick labels for logarithmic axes to revert to the default font. Should be fixed in 2.0.1 but I've included the workaround in the 2nd part of the answer.

This answer is for anyone trying to change all the fonts, including for the legend, and for anyone trying to use different fonts and sizes for each thing. It does not use rc (which doesn't seem to work for me). It is rather cumbersome but I could not get to grips with any other method personally. It basically combines ryggyr's answer here with other answers on SO.

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.font_manager as font_manager

# Set the font dictionaries (for plot title and axis titles)
title_font = {'fontname':'Arial', 'size':'16', 'color':'black', 'weight':'normal',
              'verticalalignment':'bottom'} # Bottom vertical alignment for more space
axis_font = {'fontname':'Arial', 'size':'14'}

# Set the font properties (for use in legend)
font_path = 'C:\Windows\Fonts\Arial.ttf'
font_prop = font_manager.FontProperties(fname=font_path, size=14)

ax = plt.subplot() # Defines ax variable by creating an empty plot

# Set the tick labels font
for label in (ax.get_xticklabels() + ax.get_yticklabels()):
    label.set_fontname('Arial')
    label.set_fontsize(13)

x = np.linspace(0, 10)
y = x + np.random.normal(x) # Just simulates some data

plt.plot(x, y, 'b+', label='Data points')
plt.xlabel("x axis", **axis_font)
plt.ylabel("y axis", **axis_font)
plt.title("Misc graph", **title_font)
plt.legend(loc='lower right', prop=font_prop, numpoints=1)
plt.text(0, 0, "Misc text", **title_font)
plt.show()

The benefit of this method is that, by having several font dictionaries, you can choose different fonts/sizes/weights/colours for the various titles, choose the font for the tick labels, and choose the font for the legend, all independently.

UPDATE:

I have worked out a slightly different, less cluttered approach that does away with font dictionaries, and allows any font on your system, even .otf fonts. To have separate fonts for each thing, just write more font_path and font_prop like variables.

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.font_manager as font_manager
import matplotlib.ticker
# Workaround for Matplotlib 2.0.0 log axes bug https://github.com/matplotlib/matplotlib/issues/8017 :
matplotlib.ticker._mathdefault = lambda x: '\\mathdefault{%s}'%x

# Set the font properties (can use more variables for more fonts)
font_path = 'C:\Windows\Fonts\AGaramondPro-Regular.otf'
font_prop = font_manager.FontProperties(fname=font_path, size=14)

ax = plt.subplot() # Defines ax variable by creating an empty plot

# Define the data to be plotted
x = np.linspace(0, 10)
y = x + np.random.normal(x)
plt.plot(x, y, 'b+', label='Data points')

for label in (ax.get_xticklabels() + ax.get_yticklabels()):
    label.set_fontproperties(font_prop)
    label.set_fontsize(13) # Size here overrides font_prop

plt.title("Exponentially decaying oscillations", fontproperties=font_prop,
          size=16, verticalalignment='bottom') # Size here overrides font_prop
plt.xlabel("Time", fontproperties=font_prop)
plt.ylabel("Amplitude", fontproperties=font_prop)
plt.text(0, 0, "Misc text", fontproperties=font_prop)

lgd = plt.legend(loc='lower right', prop=font_prop) # NB different 'prop' argument for legend
lgd.set_title("Legend", prop=font_prop)

plt.show()

How to solve the “failed to lazily initialize a collection of role” Hibernate exception

The reason is that when you use lazy load, the session is closed.

There are two solutions.

  1. Don't use lazy load.

    Set lazy=false in XML or Set @OneToMany(fetch = FetchType.EAGER) In annotation.

  2. Use lazy load.

    Set lazy=true in XML or Set @OneToMany(fetch = FetchType.LAZY) In annotation.

What is the Git equivalent for revision number?

The git describe command creates a slightly more human readable name that refers to a specific commit. For example, from the documentation:

With something like git.git current tree, I get:

[torvalds@g5 git]$ git describe parent
v1.0.4-14-g2414721

i.e. the current head of my "parent" branch is based on v1.0.4, but since it has a few commits on top of that, describe has added the number of additional commits ("14") and an abbreviated object name for the commit itself ("2414721") at the end.

As long as you use sensibly named tags to tag particular releases, this can be considered to be roughly equivalent to a SVN "revision number".

How to check null objects in jQuery

if ( $('#whatever')[0] ) {...}

The jQuery object which is returned by all native jQuery methods is NOT an array, it is an object with many properties; one of them being a "length" property. You can also check for size() or get(0) or get() - 'get(0)' works the same as accessing the first element, i.e. $(elem)[0]

Access multiple viewchildren using @viewchild

Use the @ViewChildren decorator combined with QueryList. Both of these are from "@angular/core"

@ViewChildren(CustomComponent) customComponentChildren: QueryList<CustomComponent>;

Doing something with each child looks like: this.customComponentChildren.forEach((child) => { child.stuff = 'y' })

There is further documentation to be had at angular.io, specifically: https://angular.io/docs/ts/latest/cookbook/component-communication.html#!#sts=Parent%20calls%20a%20ViewChild

Is it possible to write to the console in colour in .NET?

class Program
{
    static void Main()
    {
        Console.BackgroundColor = ConsoleColor.Blue;
        Console.ForegroundColor = ConsoleColor.White;
        Console.WriteLine("White on blue.");
        Console.WriteLine("Another line.");
        Console.ResetColor();
    }
}

React Native add bold or italics to single words in <Text> field

You can also put a Text tag inside of another Text tag. The second text tag will inherit the styling of the first, but you maintain the ability to style it independently from its parent.

<Text style={styles.bold}>Level:
    <Text style={styles.normal}>Easy</Text>
</Text>

//in your stylesheet...

  bold: {
    fontSize: 25,
    fontWeight: "bold",
    color: "blue",
  },
  normal: {
  // will inherit size and color attributes
    fontWeight: "normal",
  }

how to know status of currently running jobs

I found a better answer by Kenneth Fisher. The following query returns only currently running jobs:

SELECT
    ja.job_id,
    j.name AS job_name,
    ja.start_execution_date,
    ISNULL(last_executed_step_id,0)+1 AS current_executed_step_id,
    Js.step_name
FROM msdb.dbo.sysjobactivity ja
LEFT JOIN msdb.dbo.sysjobhistory jh ON ja.job_history_id = jh.instance_id
JOIN msdb.dbo.sysjobs j ON ja.job_id = j.job_id
JOIN msdb.dbo.sysjobsteps js
    ON ja.job_id = js.job_id
    AND ISNULL(ja.last_executed_step_id,0)+1 = js.step_id
WHERE
  ja.session_id = (
    SELECT TOP 1 session_id FROM msdb.dbo.syssessions ORDER BY agent_start_date DESC
  )
AND start_execution_date is not null
AND stop_execution_date is null;

You can get more information about a job by adding more columns from msdb.dbo.sysjobactivity table in select clause.

How do I show running processes in Oracle DB?

After looking at sp_who, Oracle does not have that ability per se. Oracle has at least 8 processes running which run the db. Like RMON etc.

You can ask the DB which queries are running as that just a table query. Look at the V$ tables.

Quick Example:

SELECT sid,
       opname,
       sofar,
       totalwork,
       units,
       elapsed_seconds,
       time_remaining
FROM v$session_longops
WHERE sofar != totalwork;

Telling gcc directly to link a library statically

It is possible of course, use -l: instead of -l. For example -l:libXYZ.a to link with libXYZ.a. Notice the lib written out, as opposed to -lXYZ which would auto expand to libXYZ.

Effects of the extern keyword on C functions

The extern keyword takes on different forms depending on the environment. If a declaration is available, the extern keyword takes the linkage as that specified earlier in the translation unit. In the absence of any such declaration, extern specifies external linkage.

static int g();
extern int g(); /* g has internal linkage */

extern int j(); /* j has tentative external linkage */

extern int h();
static int h(); /* error */

Here are the relevant paragraphs from the C99 draft (n1256):

6.2.2 Linkages of identifiers

[...]

4 For an identifier declared with the storage-class specifier extern in a scope in which a prior declaration of that identifier is visible,23) if the prior declaration specifies internal or external linkage, the linkage of the identifier at the later declaration is the same as the linkage specified at the prior declaration. If no prior declaration is visible, or if the prior declaration specifies no linkage, then the identifier has external linkage.

5 If the declaration of an identifier for a function has no storage-class specifier, its linkage is determined exactly as if it were declared with the storage-class specifier extern. If the declaration of an identifier for an object has file scope and no storage-class specifier, its linkage is external.

Parsing JSON object in PHP using json_decode

If you use the following instead:

$json = file_get_contents($url);
$data = json_decode($json, TRUE);

The TRUE returns an array instead of an object.

How to handle checkboxes in ASP.NET MVC forms?

I know that this question was written when MVC3 wasn't out, but for anyone who comes to this question and are using MVC3, you may want the "correct" way to do this.

While I think that doing the whole

Contains("true");

thing is great and clean, and works on all MVC versions, the problem is that it doesn't take culture into account (as if it really matters in the case of a bool).

The "correct" way to figure out the value of a bool, at least in MVC3, is to use the ValueProvider.

var value = (bool)ValueProvider.GetValue("key").ConvertTo(typeof(bool));

I do this in one of my client's sites when I edit permissions:

var allPermissionsBase = Request.Params.AllKeys.Where(x => x.Contains("permission_")).ToList();
var allPermissions = new List<KeyValuePair<int, bool>>();

foreach (var key in allPermissionsBase)
{
     // Try to parse the key as int
     int keyAsInt;
     int.TryParse(key.Replace("permission_", ""), out keyAsInt);

     // Try to get the value as bool
     var value = (bool)ValueProvider.GetValue(key).ConvertTo(typeof(bool));
}

Now, the beauty of this is you can use this with just about any simple type, and it will even be correct based on the Culture (think money, decimals, etc).

The ValueProvider is what is used when you form your Actions like this:

public ActionResult UpdatePermissions(bool permission_1, bool permission_2)

but when you are trying to dynamically build these lists and check the values, you will never know the Id at compile time, so you have to process them on the fly.

Do you get charged for a 'stopped' instance on EC2?

This may have changed since the question was asked, but there is a difference between stopping an instance and terminating an instance.

If your instance is EBS-based, it can be stopped. It will remain in your account, but you will not be charged for it (you will continue to be charged for EBS storage associated with the instance and unused Elastic IP addresses). You can re-start the instance at any time.

If the instance is terminated, it will be deleted from your account. You’ll be charged for any remaining EBS volumes, but by default the associated EBS volume will be deleted. This can be configured when you create the instance using the command-line EC2 API Tools.

jQuery Change event on an <input> element - any way to retain previous value?

A better approach is to store the old value using .data. This spares the creation of a global var which you should stay away from and keeps the information encapsulated within the element. A real world example as to why Global Vars are bad is documented here

e.g

<script>
    //look no global needed:)

    $(document).ready(function(){
        // Get the initial value
       var $el = $('#myInputElement');
       $el.data('oldVal',  $el.val() );

       $el.change(function(){
            //store new value
            var $this = $(this);
            var newValue = $this.data('newVal', $this.val());
       })
       .focus(function(){
            // Get the value when input gains focus
            var oldValue = $(this).data('oldVal');
       });
    });
</script>
<input id="myInputElement" type="text">

Update just one gem with bundler

I've used bundle update --source myself for a long time but there are scenarios where it doesn't work. Luckily, there's a gem called bundler-patch which has the goal of fixing this shortcoming.

I also wrote a short blog post about how to use bundler-patch and why bundle update --source doesn't work consistently. Also, be sure to check out a post by chrismo that explains in great detail what the --source option does.

Switch focus between editor and integrated terminal in Visual Studio Code

I configured mine as following since I found ctrl+` is a bit hard to press.

{
  "key": "ctrl+k",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusActiveEditorGroup",
  "when": "terminalFocus"
},
{
  "key": "ctrl+j",
  "command": "workbench.action.terminal.focus",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
}

I also configured the following to move between editor group.

{
  "key": "ctrl+h",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusPreviousGroup",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
},
{
  "key": "ctrl+l",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusNextGroup",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
}

By the way, I configured Caps Lock to ctrl on Mac from the System Preferences => keyboard =>Modifier Keys.

How to convert number to words in java

I've developed a Java component to convert given number into words. All you've to do is - just copy the whole class from Java program to convert numbers to words and paste it in your project.

Just invoke it like below

Words w = Words.getInstance(1234567);
System.out.println(w.getNumberInWords());

My program supports up to 10 million. If you want, you can still extend this. Just below the example output

2345223 = Twenty Three Lakh Fourty Five Thousand Two Hundred Twenty Three
9999999 = Ninety Nine Lakh Ninety Nine Thousand Nine Hundred Ninety Nine
199 = One Hundred Ninety Nine
10 = Ten

Detecting a long press with Android

The idea is creating a Runnable for execute long click in a future, but this execution can be canceled because of a click, or move.

You also need to know, when long click was consumed, and when it is canceled because finger moved too much. We use initialTouchX & initialTouchY for checking if the user exit a square area of 10 pixels, 5 each side.

Here is my complete code for delegating Click & LongClick from Cell in ListView to Activity with OnTouchListener:

    ClickDelegate delegate;
    boolean goneFlag = false;
    float initialTouchX;
    float initialTouchY;
    final Handler handler = new Handler();
    Runnable mLongPressed = new Runnable() {
        public void run() {
            Log.i("TOUCH_EVENT", "Long press!");
            if (delegate != null) {
                goneFlag = delegate.onItemLongClick(index);
            } else {
                goneFlag = true;
            }
        }
    };

    @OnTouch({R.id.layout})
    public boolean onTouch (View view, MotionEvent motionEvent) {
        switch (motionEvent.getAction()) {
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN:
                handler.postDelayed(mLongPressed, ViewConfiguration.getLongPressTimeout());
                initialTouchX = motionEvent.getRawX();
                initialTouchY = motionEvent.getRawY();
                return true;
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_MOVE:
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_CANCEL:
                if (Math.abs(motionEvent.getRawX() - initialTouchX) > 5 || Math.abs(motionEvent.getRawY() - initialTouchY) > 5) {
                    handler.removeCallbacks(mLongPressed);
                    return true;
                }
                return false;
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP:
                handler.removeCallbacks(mLongPressed);
                if (goneFlag || Math.abs(motionEvent.getRawX() - initialTouchX) > 5 || Math.abs(motionEvent.getRawY() - initialTouchY) > 5) {
                    goneFlag = false;
                    return true;
                }
                break;
        }
        Log.i("TOUCH_EVENT", "Short press!");
        if (delegate != null) {
            if (delegate.onItemClick(index)) {
                return false;
            }
        }
        return false;
    }

ClickDelegateis an interface for sending click events to the handler class like an Activity

    public interface ClickDelegate {
        boolean onItemClick(int position);
        boolean onItemLongClick(int position);
    }

And all what you need is to implement it in your Activity or parent Viewif you need to delegate the behavior:

public class MyActivity extends Activity implements ClickDelegate {

    //code...
    //in some place of you code like onCreate,
    //you need to set the delegate like this:
    SomeArrayAdapter.delegate = this;
    //or:
    SomeViewHolder.delegate = this;
    //or:
    SomeCustomView.delegate = this;

    @Override
    public boolean onItemClick(int position) {
        Object obj = list.get(position);
        if (obj) {
            return true; //if you handle click
        } else {
            return false; //if not, it could be another event
        }
    }

    @Override
    public boolean onItemLongClick(int position) {
        Object obj = list.get(position);
        if (obj) {
            return true; //if you handle long click
        } else {
            return false; //if not, it's a click
        }
    }
}

Example of Mockito's argumentCaptor

I agree with what @fge said, more over. Lets look at example. Consider you have a method:

class A {
    public void foo(OtherClass other) {
        SomeData data = new SomeData("Some inner data");
        other.doSomething(data);
    }
}

Now if you want to check the inner data you can use the captor:

// Create a mock of the OtherClass
OtherClass other = mock(OtherClass.class);

// Run the foo method with the mock
new A().foo(other);

// Capture the argument of the doSomething function
ArgumentCaptor<SomeData> captor = ArgumentCaptor.forClass(SomeData.class);
verify(other, times(1)).doSomething(captor.capture());

// Assert the argument
SomeData actual = captor.getValue();
assertEquals("Some inner data", actual.innerData);

How do I use Safe Area Layout programmatically?

SafeAreaLayoutGuide is UIView property,

The top of the safeAreaLayoutGuide indicates the unobscured top edge of the view (e.g, not behind the status bar or navigation bar, if present). Similarly for the other edges.

Use safeAreaLayoutGuide for avoid our objects clipping/overlapping from rounded corners, navigation bars, tab bars, toolbars, and other ancestor views.

We can create safeAreaLayoutGuide object & set object constraints respectively.

Constraints for Portrait + Landscape is -

Portrait image

Landscape image

        self.edgesForExtendedLayout = []//Optional our as per your view ladder

        let newView = UIView()
        newView.backgroundColor = .red
        self.view.addSubview(newView)
        newView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
        if #available(iOS 11.0, *) {
            let guide = self.view.safeAreaLayoutGuide

Count textarea characters

For those wanting a simple solution without jQuery, here's a way.

textarea and message container to put in your form:

<textarea onKeyUp="count_it()" id="text" name="text"></textarea>
Length <span id="counter"></span>

JavaScript:

<script>
function count_it() {
    document.getElementById('counter').innerHTML = document.getElementById('text').value.length;
}
count_it();
</script>

The script counts the characters initially and then for every keystroke and puts the number in the counter span.

what is the use of fflush(stdin) in c programming

It's an unportable way to remove all data from the input buffer till the next newline. I've seen it used in cases like that:

char c;
char s[32];
puts("Type a char");
c=getchar();
fflush(stdin);
puts("Type a string");
fgets(s,32,stdin);

Without the fflush(), if you type a character, say "a", and the hit enter, the input buffer contains "a\n", the getchar() peeks the "a", but the "\n" remains in the buffer, so the next fgets() will find it and return an empty string without even waiting for user input.

However, note that this use of fflush() is unportable. I've tested right now on a Linux machine, and it does not work, for example.

How to create javascript delay function

You do not need to use an anonymous function with setTimeout. You can do something like this:

setTimeout(doSomething, 3000);

function doSomething() {
   //do whatever you want here
}

jQuery Multiple ID selectors

it should. Typically that's how you do multiple selectors. Otherwise it may not like you trying to assign the return values of three uploads to the same var.

I would suggest using .each or maybe push the returns to an array rather than assigning them to that value.

Table with table-layout: fixed; and how to make one column wider

The important thing of table-layout: fixed is that the column widths are determined by the first row of the table.

So

if your table structure is as follow (standard table structure)

<table>
  <thead>
      <tr>
          <th> First column </th>
          <th> Second column </th>
          <th> Third column </th>
      </tr>
  </thead>

   <tbody>
      <tr>
          <td> First column </td>
          <td> Second column </td>
          <td> Third column </td>
      </tr>
  </tbody>

if you would like to give a width to second column then

<style>
    table{
        table-layout:fixed;
        width: 100%;
    }

    table tr th:nth-child(2){
       width: 60%;
     }

</style>

Please look that we style the th not the td.

How do I get the current location of an iframe?

HTA works like a normal windows application.
You write HTML code, and save it as an .hta file.

However, there are, at least, one drawback: The browser can't open an .hta file; it's handled as a normal .exe program. So, if you place a link to an .hta onto your web page, it will open a download dialog, asking of you want to open or save the HTA file. If its not a problem for you, you can click "Open" and it will open a new window (that have no toolbars, so no Back button, neither address bar, neither menubar).

I needed to do something very similar to what you want, but instead of iframes, I used a real frameset.
The main page need to be a .hta file; the other should be a normal .htm page (or .php or whatever).

Here's an example of a HTA page with 2 frames, where the top one have a button and a text field, that contains the second frame URL; the button updates the field:

frameset.hta

<html>
    <head>
        <title>HTA Example</title>
        <HTA:APPLICATION id="frames" border="thin" caption="yes" icon="http://www.google.com/favicon.ico" showintaskbar="yes" singleinstance="no" sysmenu="yes" navigable="yes" contextmenu="no" innerborder="no" scroll="auto" scrollflat="yes" selection="yes" windowstate="normal"></HTA:APPLICATION>
    </head>
    <frameset rows="60px, *">
        <frame src="topo.htm" name="topo" id="topo" application="yes" />
        <frame src="http://www.google.com" name="conteudo" id="conteudo" application="yes" />
    </frameset>
</html>
  • There's an HTA:APPLICATION tag that sets some properties to the file; it's good to have, but it isn't a must.
  • You NEED to place an application="yes" at the frames' tags. It says they belongs to the program too and should have access to all data (if you don't, the frames will still show the error you had before).

topo.htm

<html>
    <head>
        <title>Topo</title>
        <script type="text/javascript">
            function copia_url() {
                campo.value = parent.conteudo.location;
            }
        </script>
    </head>
    <body style="background: lightBlue;" onload="copia_url()">
        <input type="button" value="Copiar URL" onclick="copia_url()" />
        <input type="text" size="120" id="campo" />
    </body>
</html>
  • You should notice that I didn't used any getElement function to fetch the field; on HTA file, all elements that have an ID becomes instantly an object

I hope this help you, and others that get to this question. It solved my problem, that looks like to be the same as you have.

mysqld: Can't change dir to data. Server doesn't start

If you installed MySQL Server using the Windows installer and as a Window's service, then you can start MySQL Server using PowerShell and experience the convenience of not leaving the command line.

Open PowerShell and run the following command:

Get-Service *sql*

A list of MySQL services will be retrieved and displayed. Choose the one that you want and run the following command while replacing service-name with the actual service name:

Start-Service -Name service-name

Done. You can check that the service is running by running the command Get-Service *sql* again and checking the status of the service.

What is the difference between field, variable, attribute, and property in Java POJOs?

Yes, there is.

Variable can be local, field, or constant (although this is technically wrong). It's vague like attribute. Also, you should know that some people like to call final non-static (local or instance) variables

"Values". This probably comes from emerging JVM FP languages like Scala.

Field is generally a private variable on an instance class. It does not mean there is a getter and a setter.

Attribute is a vague term. It can easily be confused with XML or Java Naming API. Try to avoid using that term.

Property is the getter and setter combination.

Some examples below

public class Variables {

    //Constant
    public final static String MY_VARIABLE = "that was a lot for a constant";

    //Value
    final String dontChangeMeBro = "my god that is still long for a val";

    //Field
    protected String flipMe = "wee!!!";

    //Property
    private String ifYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa;

    //Still the property
    public String getIfYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa() {
        return ifYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa;
    }

    //And now the setter
    public void setIfYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa(String ifYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa) {
        this.ifYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa = ifYouThoughtTheConstantWasVerboseHaHa;
    }

}

There are many more combinations, but my fingers are getting tired :)

Executing multi-line statements in the one-line command-line?

This variant is most portable for putting multi-line scripts on command-line on Windows and *nix, py2/3, without pipes:

python -c "exec(\"import sys \nfor r in range(10): print('rob') \")"

(None of the other examples seen here so far did so)

Neat on Windows is:

python -c exec"""import sys \nfor r in range(10): print 'rob' """
python -c exec("""import sys \nfor r in range(10): print('rob') """)

Neat on bash/*nix is:

python -c $'import sys \nfor r in range(10): print("rob")'

This function turns any multiline-script into a portable command-one-liner:

def py2cmdline(script):
    exs = 'exec(%r)' % re.sub('\r\n|\r', '\n', script.rstrip())
    print('python -c "%s"' % exs.replace('"', r'\"'))

Usage:

>>> py2cmdline(getcliptext())
python -c "exec('print \'AA\tA\'\ntry:\n for i in 1, 2, 3:\n  print i / 0\nexcept:\n print \"\"\"longer\nmessage\"\"\"')"

Input was:

print 'AA   A'
try:
 for i in 1, 2, 3:
  print i / 0
except:
 print """longer
message"""

BOOLEAN or TINYINT confusion

Just a note for php developers (I lack the necessary stackoverflow points to post this as a comment) ... the automagic (and silent) conversion to TINYINT means that php retrieves a value from a "BOOLEAN" column as a "0" or "1", not the expected (by me) true/false.

A developer who is looking at the SQL used to create a table and sees something like: "some_boolean BOOLEAN NOT NULL DEFAULT FALSE," might reasonably expect to see true/false results when a row containing that column is retrieved. Instead (at least in my version of PHP), the result will be "0" or "1" (yes, a string "0" or string "1", not an int 0/1, thank you php).

It's a nit, but enough to cause unit tests to fail.

Unloading classes in java?

You can unload a ClassLoader but you cannot unload specific classes. More specifically you cannot unload classes created in a ClassLoader that's not under your control.

If possible, I suggest using your own ClassLoader so you can unload.

There is now (AutoMapper 2.0) an IgnoreMap attribute, which I'm going to use rather than the fluent syntax which is a bit heavy IMHO.

SQL Server 2000: How to exit a stored procedure?

i figured out why RETURN is not unconditionally returning from the stored procedure. The error i'm seeing is while the stored procedure is being compiled - not when it's being executed.

Consider an imaginary stored procedure:

CREATE PROCEDURE dbo.foo AS

INSERT INTO ExistingTable
EXECUTE LinkedServer.Database.dbo.SomeProcedure

Even though this stord proedure contains an error (maybe it's because the objects have a differnet number of columns, maybe there is a timestamp column in the table, maybe the stored procedure doesn't exist), you can still save it. You can save it because you're referencing a linked server.

But when you actually execute the stored procedure, SQL Server then compiles it, and generates a query plan.

My error is not happening on line 114, it is on line 114. SQL Server cannot compile the stored procedure, that's why it's failing.

And that's why RETURN does not return, because it hasn't even started yet.

import module from string variable

importlib.import_module is what you are looking for. It returns the imported module. (Only available for Python >= 2.7 or 3.x):

import importlib

mymodule = importlib.import_module('matplotlib.text')

You can thereafter access anything in the module as mymodule.myclass, etc.

Pass a reference to DOM object with ng-click

The angular way is shown in the angular docs :)

https://docs.angularjs.org/api/ng/directive/ngReadonly

Here is the example they use:

<body>
    Check me to make text readonly: <input type="checkbox" ng-model="checked"><br/>
    <input type="text" ng-readonly="checked" value="I'm Angular"/>
</body>

Basically the angular way is to create a model object that will hold whether or not the input should be readonly and then set that model object accordingly. The beauty of angular is that most of the time you don't need to do any dom manipulation. You just have angular render the view they way your model is set (let angular do the dom manipulation for you and keep your code clean).

So basically in your case you would want to do something like below or check out this working example.

<button ng-click="isInput1ReadOnly = !isInput1ReadOnly">Click Me</button>
<input type="text" ng-readonly="isInput1ReadOnly" value="Angular Rules!"/>

How to modify existing, unpushed commit messages?

If the commit you want to fix isn’t the most recent one:

  1. git rebase --interactive $parent_of_flawed_commit

    If you want to fix several flawed commits, pass the parent of the oldest one of them.

  2. An editor will come up, with a list of all commits since the one you gave.

    1. Change pick to reword (or on old versions of Git, to edit) in front of any commits you want to fix.
    2. Once you save, Git will replay the listed commits.

  3. For each commit you want to reword, Git will drop you back into your editor. For each commit you want to edit, Git drops you into the shell. If you’re in the shell:

    1. Change the commit in any way you like.
    2. git commit --amend
    3. git rebase --continue

Most of this sequence will be explained to you by the output of the various commands as you go. It’s very easy; you don’t need to memorise it – just remember that git rebase --interactive lets you correct commits no matter how long ago they were.

Note that you will not want to change commits that you have already pushed. Or maybe you do, but in that case you will have to take great care to communicate with everyone who may have pulled your commits and done work on top of them. How do I recover/resynchronise after someone pushes a rebase or a reset to a published branch?

Should I return EXIT_SUCCESS or 0 from main()?

Some compilers might create issues with this - on a Mac C++ compiler, EXIT_SUCCESS worked fine for me but on a Linux C++ complier I had to add cstdlib for it to know what EXIT_SUCCESS is. Other than that, they are one and the same.

How to set a default value with Html.TextBoxFor?

Using @Value is a hack, because it outputs two attributes, e.g.:

<input type="..." Value="foo" value=""/>

You should do this instead:

@Html.TextBox(Html.NameFor(p => p.FirstName).ToString(), "foo")

Getting value of select (dropdown) before change

Best solution:

$('select').on('selectric-before-change', function (event, element, selectric) {
    var current = element.state.currValue; // index of current value before select a new one
    var selected = element.state.selectedIdx; // index of value that will be selected

    // choose what you need
    console.log(element.items[current].value);
    console.log(element.items[current].text);
    console.log(element.items[current].slug);
});

After installing the ECONNREFUSED error did not appear again.

Hope that helps.

iOS application: how to clear notifications?

If you're coming here wondering the opposite (as I was), this post may be for you.

I couldn't figure out why my notifications were clearing when I cleared the badge...I manually increment the badge and then want to clear it when the user enters the app. That's no reason to clear out the notification center, though; they may still want to see or act on those notifications.

Negative 1 does the trick, luckily:

[UIApplication sharedApplication].applicationIconBadgeNumber = -1;

How do I remove blank pages coming between two chapters in Appendix?

One thing I discovered is that using the \include command will often insert and extra blank page. Riffing on the previous trick with the \let command, I inserted \let\include\input near the beginning of the document, and that got rid of most of the excessive blank pages.

$(document).ready not Working

I had a similar problem, but I got it solved this way:

// wait until DOM is loaded
$(document).ready(function(){

    console.log("DOM is ready");

    // wait until window is loaded (images, links etc...)
    window.onload = function() {

        console.log("window is loaded");
        var your_html_element = document.getElementById("your_html_element_ID"),

    };
});

How can I run a PHP script inside a HTML file?

I'm not sure if this is what you wanted, but this is a very hackish way to include php. What you do is you put the php you want to run in another file, and then you include that file in an image. For example:

RunFromHTML.php

<?php
  $file = fopen("file.txt", "w");
  //This will create a file called file.txt,
  //provided that it has write access to your filesystem
  fwrite($file, "Hello World!");
  //This will write "Hello World!" into file.txt
  fclose($file);
  //Always remember to close your files!
?>

RunPhp.html

<html>
  <!--head should be here, but isn't for demonstration's sake-->
  <body>
    <img style="display: none;" src="RunFromHTML.php">
    <!--This will run RunFromHTML.php-->
  </body>
</html>

Now, after visiting RunPhp.html, you should find a file called file.txt in the same directory that you created the above two files, and the file should contain "Hello World!" inside of it.

Custom CSS Scrollbar for Firefox

I thought I would share my findings in case someone is considering a JQuery plugin to do the job.

I gave JQuery Custom Scrollbar a go. It's pretty fancy and does some smooth scrolling (with scrolling inertia) and has loads of parameters you can tweak, but it ended up being a bit too CPU intensive for me (and it adds a fair amount to the DOM).

Now I'm giving Perfect Scrollbar a go. It's simple and lightweight (6KB) and it's doing a decent job so far. It's not CPU intensive at all (as far as I can tell) and adds very little to your DOM. It's only got a couple of parameters to tweak (wheelSpeed and wheelPropagation), but it's all I need and it handles updates to the scrolling content nicely (such as loading images).

P.S. I did have a quick look at JScrollPane, but @simone is right, it's a bit dated now and a PITA.

What does "./" (dot slash) refer to in terms of an HTML file path location?

You can use the following list as quick reference:

   /   = Root directory
   .   = This location
   ..  = Up a directory
   ./  = Current directory
   ../ = Parent of current directory
   ../../ = Two directories backwards

Useful article: https://css-tricks.com/quick-reminder-about-file-paths/

Slice indices must be integers or None or have __index__ method

Your debut and fin values are floating point values, not integers, because taille is a float.

Make those values integers instead:

item = plateau[int(debut):int(fin)]

Alternatively, make taille an integer:

taille = int(sqrt(len(plateau)))

Remove a modified file from pull request

You would want to amend the commit and then do a force push which will update the branch with the PR.

Here's how I recommend you do this:

  1. Close the PR so that whomever is reviewing it doesn't pull it in until you've made your changes.
  2. Do a Soft reset to the commit before your unwanted change (if this is the last commit you can use git reset --soft HEAD^ or if it's a different commit, you would want to replace 'HEAD^' with the commit id)
  3. Discard (or undo) any changes to the file that you didn't intend to update
  4. Make a new commit git commit -a -c ORIG_HEAD
  5. Force Push to your branch
  6. Re-Open Pull Request

The now that your branch has been updated, the Pull Request will include your changes.

Here's a link to Gits documentation where they have a pretty good example under Undo a commit and redo.

                    colNo2 = colNo2 + 1
                End If

        Next colNo1
        numrow = numrow + 1

Concatenate a NumPy array to another NumPy array

Actually one can always create an ordinary list of numpy arrays and convert it later.

In [1]: import numpy as np

In [2]: a = np.array([[1,2],[3,4]])

In [3]: b = np.array([[1,2],[3,4]])

In [4]: l = [a]

In [5]: l.append(b)

In [6]: l = np.array(l)

In [7]: l.shape
Out[7]: (2, 2, 2)

In [8]: l
Out[8]:
array([[[1, 2],
        [3, 4]],

       [[1, 2],
        [3, 4]]])

Using jQuery, Restricting File Size Before Uploading

I encountered the same issue. You have to use ActiveX or Flash (or Java). The good thing is that it doesn't have to be invasive. I have a simple ActiveX method that will return the size of the to-be-uploaded file.

If you go with Flash, you can even do some fancy js/css to cusomize the uploading experience--only using Flash (as a 1x1 "movie") to access it's file uploading features.

Can I run multiple programs in a Docker container?

I had similar requirement of running a LAMP stack, Mongo DB and my own services

Docker is OS based virtualisation, which is why it isolates its container around a running process, hence it requires least one process running in FOREGROUND.

So you provide your own startup script as the entry point, thus your startup script becomes an extended Docker image script, in which you can stack any number of the services as far as AT LEAST ONE FOREGROUND SERVICE IS STARTED, WHICH TOO TOWARDS THE END

So my Docker image file has two line below in the very end:

COPY myStartupScript.sh /usr/local/myscripts/myStartupScript.sh
CMD ["/bin/bash", "/usr/local/myscripts/myStartupScript.sh"]

In my script I run all MySQL, MongoDB, Tomcat etc. In the end I run my Apache as a foreground thread.

source /etc/apache2/envvars
/usr/sbin/apache2 -DFOREGROUND

This enables me to start all my services and keep the container alive with the last service started being in the foreground

Hope it helps

UPDATE: Since I last answered this question, new things have come up like Docker compose, which can help you run each service on its own container, yet bind all of them together as dependencies among those services, try knowing more about docker-compose and use it, it is more elegant way unless your need does not match with it.

Returning the product of a list

One option is to use numba and the @jit or @njit decorator. I also made one or two little tweaks to your code (at least in Python 3, "list" is a keyword that shouldn't be used for a variable name):

@njit
def njit_product(lst):
    p = lst[0]  # first element
    for i in lst[1:]: # loop over remaining elements
        p *= i
    return p

For timing purposes, you need to run once to compile the function first using numba. In general, the function will be compiled the first time it is called, and then called from memory after that (faster).

njit_product([1, 2])  # execute once to compile

Now when you execute your code, it will run with the compiled version of the function. I timed them using a Jupyter notebook and the %timeit magic function:

product(b)  # yours
# 32.7 µs ± 510 ns per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 10000 loops each)

njit_product(b)
# 92.9 µs ± 392 ns per loop (mean ± std. dev. of 7 runs, 10000 loops each)

Note that on my machine, running Python 3.5, the native Python for loop was actually the fastest. There may be a trick here when it comes to measuring numba-decorated performance with Jupyter notebooks and the %timeit magic function. I am not sure that the timings above are correct, so I recommend trying it out on your system and seeing if numba gives you a performance boost.

Best way to load module/class from lib folder in Rails 3?

As of Rails 2.3.9, there is a setting in config/application.rb in which you can specify directories that contain files you want autoloaded.

From application.rb:

# Custom directories with classes and modules you want to be autoloadable.
# config.autoload_paths += %W(#{config.root}/extras)

How do I do a HTTP GET in Java?

If you dont want to use external libraries, you can use URL and URLConnection classes from standard Java API.

An example looks like this:

String urlString = "http://wherever.com/someAction?param1=value1&param2=value2....";
URL url = new URL(urlString);
URLConnection conn = url.openConnection();
InputStream is = conn.getInputStream();
// Do what you want with that stream

Unable to open project... cannot be opened because the project file cannot be parsed

I faced the same problem recently when trying to merge my branch with a remote branch. However, none of the above solutions seemed appropriate to my problem.

There were no merge conflicts between the project.pbxproj file in my branch or the remote branch. However, my projectName.xcodeproj file would refuse to open for the same reason as shown in the asked question.

My solution was to look through the project.pbxproj using a text editor and find if there were any irregularities in the file syntax (for e.g. an extra curly bracket). I sped this process up by focusing on the lines which were inserted or deleted in old file as compared to the merged file. On closer examination, I found the cause of my problem was the repetition of the following line :

xxxxxxxxxxxxx /* [CP] Check Pods Manifest.lock */ = {

in my merged file. This led to an unclosed curly bracket and consequent invalid pbxproj syntax. Deleting the above line fixed my problem.

Plotting in a non-blocking way with Matplotlib

The Python package drawnow allows to update a plot in real time in a non blocking way.
It also works with a webcam and OpenCV for example to plot measures for each frame.

Close Bootstrap Modal

to close bootstrap modal you can pass 'hide' as option to modal method as follow

$('#modal').modal('hide');

Please take a look at working fiddle here

bootstrap also provide events that you can hook into modal functionality, like if you want to fire a event when the modal has finished being hidden from the user you can use hidden.bs.modal event you can read more about modal methods and events here in Documentation

If none of the above method work, give a id to your close button and trigger click on close button.

How do I specify row heights in CSS Grid layout?

One of the Related posts gave me the (simple) answer.

Apparently the auto value on the grid-template-rows property does exactly what I was looking for.

.grid {
    display:grid;
    grid-template-columns: 1fr 1.5fr 1fr;
    grid-template-rows: auto auto 1fr 1fr 1fr auto auto;
    grid-gap:10px;
    height: calc(100vh - 10px);
}

CodeIgniter query: How to move a column value to another column in the same row and save the current time in the original column?

Yes, this is possible and I would like to provide a slight alternative to Rajeev's answer that does not pass a php-generated datetime formatted string to the query.

The important distinction about how to declare the values to be SET in the UPDATE query is that they must not be quoted as literal strings.

To prevent CodeIgniter from doing this "favor" automatically, use the set() method with a third parameter of false.

$userId = 444;
$this->db->set('Last', 'Current', false);
$this->db->set('Current', 'NOW()', false);
$this->db->where('Id', $userId);
// return $this->db->get_compiled_update('Login'); // uncomment to see the rendered query
$this->db->update('Login');
return $this->db->affected_rows(); // this is expected to return the integer: 1

The generated query (depending on your database adapter) would be like this:

UPDATE `Login` SET Last = Current, Current = NOW() WHERE `Id` = 444

Demonstrated proof that the query works: https://www.db-fiddle.com/f/vcc6PfMcYhDD87wZE5gBtw/0

In this case, Last and Current ARE MySQL Keywords, but they are not Reserved Keywords, so they don't need to be backtick-wrapped.

If your precise query needs to have properly quoted identifiers (table/column names), then there is always protectIdentifiers().

AngularJS Error: $injector:unpr Unknown Provider

Be sure that you load controller outsideapp.config. The following code may cause this error:

app.config(["$stateProvider", "$urlRouterProvider", function ($stateProvider, $urlRouterProvider) {
       var AuthCtrl = require('components/auth/AuthCtrl'); //NOTICE HERE
       $stateProvider.state('login',{
            url: "/users/login",
            templateUrl: require("components/auth/login.tpl.html"),
            controller: AuthCtrl // ERROR
        })
}))

To fix this error, we must move AuthCtrl to outsideapp.config:

var AuthCtrl = require('components/auth/AuthCtrl'); //NOTICE HERE
app.config(["$stateProvider", "$urlRouterProvider", function ($stateProvider, $urlRouterProvider) {
       $stateProvider.state('login',{
            url: "/users/login",
            templateUrl: require("components/auth/login.tpl.html"),
            controller: AuthCtrl // WORK
        });
}))

How to Create a circular progressbar in Android which rotates on it?

@Pedram, your old solution works actually fine in lollipop too (and better than new one since it's usable everywhere, including in remote views) just change your circular_progress_bar.xml code to this:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<rotate xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:fromDegrees="270"
    android:toDegrees="270">

        <gradient
            android:angle="0"
            android:endColor="#007DD6"
            android:startColor="#007DD6"
            android:type="sweep"
            android:useLevel="false" />
    </shape>

Differences between INDEX, PRIMARY, UNIQUE, FULLTEXT in MySQL?

I feel like this has been well covered, maybe except for the following:

  • Simple KEY / INDEX (or otherwise called SECONDARY INDEX) do increase performance if selectivity is sufficient. On this matter, the usual recommendation is that if the amount of records in the result set on which an index is applied exceeds 20% of the total amount of records of the parent table, then the index will be ineffective. In practice each architecture will differ but, the idea is still correct.

  • Secondary Indexes (and that is very specific to mysql) should not be seen as completely separate and different objects from the primary key. In fact, both should be used jointly and, once this information known, provide an additional tool to the mysql DBA: in Mysql, indexes embed the primary key. It leads to significant performance improvements, specifically when cleverly building implicit covering indexes such as described there.

  • If you feel like your data should be UNIQUE, use a unique index. You may think it's optional (for instance, working it out at application level) and that a normal index will do, but it actually represents a guarantee for Mysql that each row is unique, which incidentally provides a performance benefit.

  • You can only use FULLTEXT (or otherwise called SEARCH INDEX) with Innodb (In MySQL 5.6.4 and up) and Myisam Engines

  • You can only use FULLTEXT on CHAR, VARCHAR and TEXT column types

  • FULLTEXT index involves a LOT more than just creating an index. There's a bunch of system tables created, a completely separate caching system and some specific rules and optimizations applied. See http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/fulltext-restrictions.html and http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/innodb-fulltext-index.html

JavaScript: how to change form action attribute value based on selection?

It's better to use

$('#search-form').setAttribute('action', '/controllerName/actionName');

rather than

$('#search-form').attr('action', '/controllerName/actionName');

So, based on trante's answer we have:

$('#search-form').submit(function() {
    var formAction = $("#selectsearch").val() == "people" ? "user" : "content";
    $("#search-form").setAttribute("action", "/search/" + formAction);
});

Using setAttribute can save you a lot of time potentially.

Is it possible to use the instanceof operator in a switch statement?

there is an even simpler way of emulating a switch structure that uses instanceof, you do this by creating a code block in your method and naming it with a label. Then you use if structures to emulate the case statements. If a case is true then you use the break LABEL_NAME to get out of your makeshift switch structure.

Move / Copy File Operations in Java

Try to use org.apache.commons.io.FileUtils (General file manipulation utilities). Facilities are provided in the following methods:

(1) FileUtils.moveDirectory(File srcDir, File destDir) => Moves a directory.

(2) FileUtils.moveDirectoryToDirectory(File src, File destDir, boolean createDestDir) => Moves a directory to another directory.

(3) FileUtils.moveFile(File srcFile, File destFile) => Moves a file.

(4) FileUtils.moveFileToDirectory(File srcFile, File destDir, boolean createDestDir) => Moves a file to a directory.

(5) FileUtils.moveToDirectory(File src, File destDir, boolean createDestDir) => Moves a file or directory to the destination directory.

It's simple, easy and fast.

Angular 2: import external js file into component

After wasting a lot of time in finding its solution, I've found one. For your convenience I've used the complete code that you can replace your whole file with.

This is a general answer. Let's say you want to import a file named testjs.js into your angular 2 component. Create testjs.js in your assets folder:

assets > testjs.js

function test(){
    alert('TestingFunction')
}

include testjs.js in your index.html

index.html

<!doctype html>
<html>
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>Project1</title>
  <base href="/">
  <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
  <link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="favicon.ico">

  <script src="./assets/testjs.js"></script>

</head>
<body>
  <app-root>Loading...</app-root>
</body>
</html>

In your app.component.ts or in any component.ts file where you want to call this js declare a variable and call the function like below:

app.component.ts

import { Component } from '@angular/core';

declare var test: any;

@Component({
  selector: 'app-root',
  templateUrl: './app.component.html',
  styleUrls: ['./app.component.css']
})

export class AppComponent {
  title = 'app works!';

  f(){
    new test();
  }
}

Finally in your app.component.html test the function

app.component.html

<h1>
  <button (click)='f()'>Test</button>
</h1>

java - path to trustStore - set property doesn't work?

Fastest way to check a string contain another substring in JavaScript?

You have three possibilites:

  1. Regular expression:

     (new RegExp('word')).test(str)
     // or
     /word/.test(str)

  2. indexOf:

     str.indexOf('word') !== -1

  3. includes:

     str.includes('word')

Regular expressions seem to be faster (at least in Chrome 10).

Performance test - short haystack
Performance test - long haystack

**Update 2011:**

It cannot be said with certainty which method is faster. The differences between the browsers is enormous. While in Chrome 10 indexOf seems to be faster, in Safari 5, indexOf is clearly slower than any other method.

You have to see and try for your self. It depends on your needs. For example a case-insensitive search is way faster with regular expressions.

Update 2018:

Just to save people from running the tests themselves, here are the current results for most common browsers, the percentages indicate performance increase over the next fastest result (which varies between browsers):

Chrome: indexOf (~98% faster) <-- wow
Firefox: cached RegExp (~18% faster)
IE11: cached RegExp(~10% faster)
Edge: indexOf (~18% faster)
Safari: cached RegExp(~0.4% faster)

Note that cached RegExp is: var r = new RegExp('simple'); var c = r.test(str); as opposed to: /simple/.test(str)

Use table row coloring for cells in Bootstrap

Bottom line is that you'll have to write a new css rule for that.

Depending on which bundle of Twitter Bootstrap you're using, you should have variables for the various colours.

Try something like:

.table tbody tr > td {
  &.success { background-color: $green; }
  &.info { background-color: $blue; }
  ...
}

Surely there's a way to use extend or the LESS equivalent to avoid repeating the same styling.

Print multiple arguments in Python

Just follow this

idiot_type = "the biggest idiot"
year = 22
print("I have been {} for {} years ".format(idiot_type, years))

OR

idiot_type = "the biggest idiot"
year = 22
print("I have been %s for %s years."% (idiot_type, year))

And forget all others, else the brain won't be able to map all the formats.

Round number to nearest integer

Your solution is calling round without specifying the second argument (number of decimal places)

>>> round(0.44)
0
>>> round(0.64)
1

which is a much better result than

>>> int(round(0.44, 2))
0
>>> int(round(0.64, 2))
0

From the Python documentation at https://docs.python.org/3/library/functions.html#round

round(number[, ndigits])

Return number rounded to ndigits precision after the decimal point. If ndigits is omitted or is None, it returns the nearest integer to its input.

Note

The behavior of round() for floats can be surprising: for example, round(2.675, 2) gives 2.67 instead of the expected 2.68. This is not a bug: it’s a result of the fact that most decimal fractions can’t be represented exactly as a float. See Floating Point Arithmetic: Issues and Limitations for more information.

How can you customize the numbers in an ordered list?

There is the Type attribute which allows you to change the numbering style, however, you cannot change the full stop after the number/letter.

Which will create a shortcut in the applications folder for you.

specifying goal in pom.xml

I've bumped into this question because I actually wanted to define a default goal in pom.xml. You can define a default goal under build:

<build>
    <defaultGoal>install</defaultGoal>
...
</build>

After that change, you can then simply run mvn which will do exactly the same as mvn install.

Note: I don't favor this as a default approach. My use case was to define a profile that downloaded a previous version of that project from Artifactory and wanted to tie that profile to a given phase. For convenience, I can run mvn -Pdownload-jar -Dversion=0.0.9 and don't need to specify a goal/phase there. I think it's reasonable to define a defaultGoal in a profile which has a very specific function for a particular phase.

How do I put an already-running process under nohup?

To send running process to nohup (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nohup)

nohup -p pid , it did not worked for me

Then I tried the following commands and it worked very fine

  1. Run some SOMECOMMAND, say /usr/bin/python /vol/scripts/python_scripts/retention_all_properties.py 1.

  2. Ctrl+Z to stop (pause) the program and get back to the shell.

  3. bg to run it in the background.

  4. disown -h so that the process isn't killed when the terminal closes.

  5. Type exit to get out of the shell because now you're good to go as the operation will run in the background in its own process, so it's not tied to a shell.

This process is the equivalent of running nohup SOMECOMMAND.

Encapsulation vs Abstraction?

Encapsulation - the process of hiding components of the class to prevent direct access from the outside. It is achieved by using "private" modifier to prevent direct access to some class members (data field or method) from other classes or objects meanwhile providing access to these private members by public members (Interface). That make the class members protected as human organs hidden/encapsulated under the skin or some shield.

Abstraction - A principle must be followed in writing OOP program that say "you must include in the class only components that are interesting in the task of the program". For example: the object student has a lot of characters as a human: name, age, weight, hair color, eye color, etc. But, when you create a class in OOP to work with students you should include only those characters that really matter for student database: name, age, specialty, level, marks ... etc. in C++ you can create abstract class by using the modifier "virtual" with any methods in the class and that will make it unusable in direct but you can derive other classes from it and create implementation for its members with adding required members based on the task.

Difference between a theta join, equijoin and natural join

A theta join allows for arbitrary comparison relationships (such as ≥).

An equijoin is a theta join using the equality operator.

A natural join is an equijoin on attributes that have the same name in each relationship.

Additionally, a natural join removes the duplicate columns involved in the equality comparison so only 1 of each compared column remains; in rough relational algebraic terms: ? = pR,S-as ? ?aR=aS

jQuery position DIV fixed at top on scroll

instead of doing it like that, why not just make the flyout position:fixed, top:0; left:0; once your window has scrolled pass a certain height:

jQuery

      if ($(this).scrollTop() > 135) {
          $('#task_flyout').addClass('fixed');

      }
  });

css

Example

Using a PagedList with a ViewModel ASP.Net MVC

The fact that you're using a view model has no bearing. The standard way of using PagedList is to store "one page of items" as a ViewBag variable. All you have to determine is what collection constitutes what you'll be paging over. You can't logically page multiple collections at the same time, so assuming you chose Instructors:

ViewBag.OnePageOfItems = myViewModelInstance.Instructors.ToPagedList(pageNumber, 10);

Then, the rest of the standard code works as it always has.

Efficient iteration with index in Scala

None of the above solutions address the generic intention of the original request. What if we don't know the id of the anchor? What if it doesn't have an id? What if it doesn't even have an href parameter (e.g. prev/next icon in a carousel)? What if we want to apply the action to multiple anchors with different models in an agnostic fashion? Here's an example that does something instead of a click, then later simulates the click (for any anchor or other tag):

var clicker = null;
$('a').click(function(e){
    clicker=$(this); // capture the clicked dom object
    /* ... do something ... */
    e.preventDefault(); // prevent original click action
});
clicker[0].click(); // this repeats the original click. [0] is necessary.

if variable contains

You might want indexOf

if (code.indexOf("ST1") >= 0) { ... }
else if (code.indexOf("ST2") >= 0) { ... }

It checks if contains is anywhere in the string variable code. This requires code to be a string. If you want this solution to be case-insensitive you have to change the case to all the same with either String.toLowerCase() or String.toUpperCase().

You could also work with a switch statement like

switch (true) {
    case (code.indexOf('ST1') >= 0):
        document.write('code contains "ST1"');
        break;
    case (code.indexOf('ST2') >= 0):
        document.write('code contains "ST2"');
        break;
    case (code.indexOf('ST3') >= 0):
        document.write('code contains "ST3"');
        break;
    }?

C# Timer or Thread.Sleep

I required a thread to fire once every minute (see question here) and I've now used a DispatchTimer based on the answers I received.

The answers provide some references which you might find useful.

Java, Shifting Elements in an Array

Logically it does not work and you should reverse your loop:

for (int i = position-1; i >= 0; i--) {
    array[i+1] = array[i];
}

Alternatively you can use

System.arraycopy(array, 0, array, 1, position);

How to convert UTF8 string to byte array?

As there is no pure byte type in JavaScript we can represent a byte array as an array of numbers, where each number represents a byte and thus will have an integer value between 0 and 255 inclusive.

Here is a simple function that does convert a JavaScript string into an Array of numbers that contain the UTF-8 encoding of the string:

function toUtf8(str) {
    var value = [];
    var destIndex = 0;
    for (var index = 0; index < str.length; index++) {
        var code = str.charCodeAt(index);
        if (code <= 0x7F) {
            value[destIndex++] = code;
        } else if (code <= 0x7FF) {
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 6 ) & 0x1F) | 0xC0;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 0 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
        } else if (code <= 0xFFFF) {
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 12) & 0x0F) | 0xE0;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 6 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 0 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
        } else if (code <= 0x1FFFFF) {
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 18) & 0x07) | 0xF0;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 12) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 6 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 0 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
        } else if (code <= 0x03FFFFFF) {
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 24) & 0x03) | 0xF0;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 18) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 12) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 6 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 0 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
        } else if (code <= 0x7FFFFFFF) {
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 30) & 0x01) | 0xFC;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 24) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 18) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 12) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 6 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
            value[destIndex++] = ((code >> 0 ) & 0x3F) | 0x80;
        } else {
            throw new Error("Unsupported Unicode character \""
                + str.charAt(index) + "\" with code " + code + " (binary: "
                + toBinary(code) + ") at index " + index
                + ". Cannot represent it as UTF-8 byte sequence.");
        }
    }
    return value;
}

function toBinary(byteValue) {
    if (byteValue < 0) {
        byteValue = byteValue & 0x00FF;
    }
    var str = byteValue.toString(2);
    var len = str.length;
    var prefix = "";
    for (var i = len; i < 8; i++) {
        prefix += "0";
    }
    return prefix + str;
}

How to extract extension from filename string in Javascript?

This is the solution if your file has more . (dots) in the name.

<script type="text/javascript">var x = "file1.asdf.txt";
var y = x.split(".");
alert(y[(y.length)-1]);</script>

Using ExcelDataReader to read Excel data starting from a particular cell

To be more clear, I will begin at the beginning.

I will rely on the sample code found in https://github.com/ExcelDataReader/ExcelDataReader, but with some modifications to avoid inconveniences.

The following code detects the file format, either xls or xlsx.

FileStream stream = File.Open(filePath, FileMode.Open, FileAccess.Read);
IExcelDataReader excelReader;

//1. Reading Excel file
if (Path.GetExtension(filePath).ToUpper() == ".XLS")
{
    //1.1 Reading from a binary Excel file ('97-2003 format; *.xls)
    excelReader = ExcelReaderFactory.CreateBinaryReader(stream);
}
else
{
    //1.2 Reading from a OpenXml Excel file (2007 format; *.xlsx)
    excelReader = ExcelReaderFactory.CreateOpenXmlReader(stream);
}

//2. DataSet - The result of each spreadsheet will be created in the result.Tables
DataSet result = excelReader.AsDataSet();

//3. DataSet - Create column names from first row
excelReader.IsFirstRowAsColumnNames = false;

Now we can access the file contents in a more convenient way. I use DataTable for this. The following is an example to access a specific cell, and print its value in the console:

DataTable dt = result.Tables[0];
Console.WriteLine(dt.Rows[rowPosition][columnPosition]);

If you do not want to do a DataTable, you can do the same as follows:

Console.WriteLine(result.Tables[0].Rows[rowPosition][columnPosition]);

It is important not try to read beyond the limits of the table, for this you can see the number of rows and columns as follows:

Console.WriteLine(result.Tables[0].Rows.Count);
Console.WriteLine(result.Tables[0].Columns.Count);

Finally, when you're done, you should close the reader and free resources:

//5. Free resources (IExcelDataReader is IDisposable)
excelReader.Close();

I hope you find it useful.

(I understand that the question is old, but I make this contribution to enhance the knowledge base, because there is little material about particular implementations of this library).

MSBuild doesn't copy references (DLL files) if using project dependencies in solution

I just deal with it like this. Go to the properties of your reference and do this:

Set "Copy local = false"
Save
Set "Copy local = true"
Save

and that's it.

Visual Studio 2010 doesn't initially put: <private>True</private> in the reference tag and setting "copy local" to false causes it to create the tag. Afterwards it will set it to true and false accordingly.

Add padding to HTML text input field

you can solve this, taking the input tag inside a div, then put the padding property on div tag. This work's for me...

Like this:

<div class="paded">
    <input type="text" />
</div>

and css:

.paded{
    padding-right: 20px;
}

Loading DLLs at runtime in C#

It's not so difficult.

You can inspect the available functions of the loaded object, and if you find the one you're looking for by name, then snoop its expected parms, if any. If it's the call you're trying to find, then call it using the MethodInfo object's Invoke method.

Another option is to simply build your external objects to an interface, and cast the loaded object to that interface. If successful, call the function natively.

This is pretty simple stuff.

How to extract or unpack an .ab file (Android Backup file)

I have had to unpack a .ab-file, too and found this post while looking for an answer. My suggested solution is Android Backup Extractor, a free Java tool for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

Make sure to take a look at the README, if you encounter a problem. You might have to download further files, if your .ab-file is password-protected.

Usage:
java -jar abe.jar [-debug] [-useenv=yourenv] unpack <backup.ab> <backup.tar> [password]

Example:

Let's say, you've got a file test.ab, which is not password-protected, you're using Windows and want the resulting .tar-Archive to be called test.tar. Then your command should be:

java.exe -jar abe.jar unpack test.ab test.tar ""

Is calling destructor manually always a sign of bad design?

Found another example where you would have to call destructor(s) manually. Suppose you have implemented a variant-like class that holds one of several types of data:

struct Variant {
    union {
        std::string str;
        int num;
        bool b;
    };
    enum Type { Str, Int, Bool } type;
};

If the Variant instance was holding a std::string, and now you're assigning a different type to the union, you must destruct the std::string first. The compiler will not do that automatically.

Regex to replace multiple spaces with a single space

More robust:

function trim(word)
{
    word = word.replace(/[^\x21-\x7E]+/g, ' '); // change non-printing chars to spaces
    return word.replace(/^\s+|\s+$/g, '');      // remove leading/trailing spaces
}

how to take user input in Array using java?

How to list all functions in a Python module?

For code that you do not wish to parse, I recommend the AST-based approach of @csl above.

For everything else, the inspect module is correct:

import inspect

import <module_to_inspect> as module

functions = inspect.getmembers(module, inspect.isfunction)

This gives a list of 2-tuples in the form [(<name:str>, <value:function>), ...].

The simple answer above is hinted at in various responses and comments, but not called out explicitly.

JList add/remove Item

The problem is

listModel.addElement(listaRosa.getSelectedValue());
listModel.removeElement(listaRosa.getSelectedValue());

you may be adding an element and immediatly removing it since both add and remove operations are on the same listModel.

Try

private void aggiungiTitolareButtonActionPerformed(java.awt.event.ActionEvent evt) {

    DefaultListModel lm2 = (DefaultListModel) listaTitolari.getModel();
    DefaultListModel lm1  = (DefaultListModel) listaRosa.getModel();
    if(lm2 == null)
    {
        lm2 = new DefaultListModel();
        listaTitolari.setModel(lm2);
    }
    lm2.addElement(listaTitolari.getSelectedValue());
    lm1.removeElement(listaTitolari.getSelectedValue());
}

Pass Array Parameter in SqlCommand

If you can use a tool like "dapper", this can be simply:

int[] ages = { 20, 21, 22 }; // could be any common list-like type
var rows = connection.Query<YourType>("SELECT * from TableA WHERE Age IN @ages",
          new { ages }).ToList();

Dapper will handle unwrapping this to individual parameters for you.

How to resolve Unable to load authentication plugin 'caching_sha2_password' issue

This could be your connectors for MySQL which need to be updated, as MySQL8 changed the encryption of passwords - so older connectors are encrypting them incorrectly.

The maven repo for the java connector can be found here.
If you use flyway plugin, you should also consider updating it, too!

Then you can simply update your maven pom with:

<dependency>
    <groupId>mysql</groupId>
    <artifactId>mysql-connector-java</artifactId>
    <version>8.0.17</version>
</dependency>

Or for others who use Gradle, you can update build.gradle with:

 buildscript {
    ext {
        ...
    }
    repositories {
        ...
        mavenCentral()
    }
    dependencies {
        classpath("org.springframework.boot:spring-boot-gradle-plugin:${springBootVersion}")
        classpath('mysql:mysql-connector-java:8.0.11')
    }
 }

All that you really need to do (build.gradle example)

Is it possible to use std::string in a constexpr?

No, and your compiler already gave you a comprehensive explanation.

But you could do this:

constexpr char constString[] = "constString";

At runtime, this can be used to construct a std::string when needed.

Batch File; List files in directory, only filenames?

You can also try this:

for %%a in (*) do echo %%a

Using a for loop, you can echo out all the file names of the current directory.

To print them directly from the console:

for %a in (*) do @echo %a

Use cases for the 'setdefault' dict method

One drawback of defaultdict over dict (dict.setdefault) is that a defaultdict object creates a new item EVERYTIME non existing key is given (eg with ==, print). Also the defaultdict class is generally way less common then the dict class, its more difficult to serialize it IME.

P.S. IMO functions|methods not meant to mutate an object, should not mutate an object.

Is there any simple way to convert .xls file to .csv file? (Excel)

I need to do the same thing. I ended up with something similar to Kman

       static void ExcelToCSVCoversion(string sourceFile, string targetFile)
    {
        Application rawData = new Application();

        try
        {
            Workbook workbook = rawData.Workbooks.Open(sourceFile);
            Worksheet ws = (Worksheet) workbook.Sheets[1];
            ws.SaveAs(targetFile, XlFileFormat.xlCSV);
            Marshal.ReleaseComObject(ws);
        }

        finally
        {
            rawData.DisplayAlerts = false;
            rawData.Quit();
            Marshal.ReleaseComObject(rawData);
        }

        Console.WriteLine();
        Console.WriteLine($"The excel file {sourceFile} has been converted into {targetFile} (CSV format).");
        Console.WriteLine();
    }

If there are multiple sheets this is lost in the conversion but you could loop over the number of sheets and save each one as csv.

What is the $? (dollar question mark) variable in shell scripting?

$? is used to find the return value of the last executed command. Try the following in the shell:

ls somefile
echo $?

If somefile exists (regardless whether it is a file or directory), you will get the return value thrown by the ls command, which should be 0 (default "success" return value). If it doesn't exist, you should get a number other then 0. The exact number depends on the program.

For many programs you can find the numbers and their meaning in the corresponding man page. These will usually be described as "exit status" and may have their own section.

Pushing an existing Git repository to SVN

In my case, I had to initiate a clean project from SVN

$ Project> git svn fetch

add all your project sources...

$ Project> git add .
$ Project> git commit -m "Importing project sources"
$ Project> git svn dcommit

Handling the window closing event with WPF / MVVM Light Toolkit

I would simply associate the handler in the View constructor:

MyWindow()
{
    // Set up ViewModel, assign to DataContext etc.
    Closing += viewModel.OnWindowClosing;
}

Then add the handler to the ViewModel:

using System.ComponentModel;

public void OnWindowClosing(object sender, CancelEventArgs e)
{
   // Handle closing logic, set e.Cancel as needed
}

In this case, you gain exactly nothing except complexity by using a more elaborate pattern with more indirection (5 extra lines of XAML plus Command pattern).

The "zero code-behind" mantra is not the goal in itself, the point is to decouple ViewModel from the View. Even when the event is bound in code-behind of the View, the ViewModel does not depend on the View and the closing logic can be unit-tested.

Hibernate error - QuerySyntaxException: users is not mapped [from users]

org.hibernate.hql.internal.ast.QuerySyntaxException: users is not mapped [from users]

This indicates that hibernate does not know the User entity as "users".

@javax.persistence.Entity
@javax.persistence.Table(name = "Users")
public class User {

The @Table annotation sets the table name to be "Users" but the entity name is still referred to in HQL as "User".

To change both, you should set the name of the entity:

// this sets the name of the table and the name of the entity
@javax.persistence.Entity(name = "Users")
public class User implements Serializable{

See my answer here for more info: Hibernate table not mapped error

Command output redirect to file and terminal

It is worth mentioning that 2>&1 means that standard error will be redirected too, together with standard output. So

someCommand | tee someFile

gives you just the standard output in the file, but not the standard error: standard error will appear in console only. To get standard error in the file too, you can use

someCommand 2>&1 | tee someFile

(source: In the shell, what is " 2>&1 "? ). Finally, both the above commands will truncate the file and start clear. If you use a sequence of commands, you may want to get output&error of all of them, one after another. In this case you can use -a flag to "tee" command:

someCommand 2>&1 | tee -a someFile

How to select clear table contents without destroying the table?

I use this code to remove my data but leave the formulas in the top row. It also removes all rows except for the top row and scrolls the page up to the top.

Sub CleanTheTable()

    ActiveSheet.ListObjects("TestTable").HeaderRowRange.Select
    'Remove the filters if one exists.

    Selection.AutoFilter
    End If
    'Clear all lines but the first one in the table leaving formulas for the next go round.
    With Worksheets("Data").ListObjects("TestTable")
    .Range.AutoFilter
    On Error Resume Next
    .DataBodyRange.Offset(1).Resize(.DataBodyRange.Rows.Count - 1, .DataBodyRange.Columns.Count).Rows.Delete
    .DataBodyRange.Rows(1).SpecialCells(xlCellTypeConstants).ClearContents
    ActiveWindow.SmallScroll Down:=-10000

    End With
Application.ScreenUpdating = True

check if a std::vector contains a certain object?

If searching for an element is important, I'd recommend std::set instead of std::vector. Using this:

std::find(vec.begin(), vec.end(), x) runs in O(n) time, but std::set has its own find() member (ie. myset.find(x)) which runs in O(log n) time - that's much more efficient with large numbers of elements

std::set also guarantees all the added elements are unique, which saves you from having to do anything like if not contained then push_back()....

How to select top n rows from a datatable/dataview in ASP.NET

If you want the number of rows to be flexible, you can add row_number in the SQL. For SQL server:

SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY myOrder) ROW_NUMBER, * FROM myTable

Then filter the datatable on row_number:

Dataview dv= new Dataview(dt, "ROW_NUMBER<=100", "", CurrentRows)

Replace the single quote (') character from a string

As for how to represent a single apostrophe as a string in Python, you can simply surround it with double quotes ("'") or you can escape it inside single quotes ('\'').

To remove apostrophes from a string, a simple approach is to just replace the apostrophe character with an empty string:

>>> "didn't".replace("'", "")
'didnt'

Defining custom attrs

The traditional approach is full of boilerplate code and clumsy resource handling. That's why I made the Spyglass framework. To demonstrate how it works, here's an example showing how to make a custom view that displays a String title.

Step 1: Create a custom view class.

public class CustomView extends FrameLayout {
    private TextView titleView;

    public CustomView(Context context) {
        super(context);
        init(null, 0, 0);
    }

    public CustomView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs) {
        super(context, attrs);
        init(attrs, 0, 0);
    }

    public CustomView(Context context, AttributeSet attrs, int defStyleAttr) {
        super(context, attrs, defStyleAttr);
        init(attrs, defStyleAttr, 0);
    }

    @RequiresApi(21)
    public CustomView(
            Context context,
            AttributeSet attrs,
            int defStyleAttr,
            int defStyleRes) {

        super(context, attrs, defStyleAttr, defStyleRes);
        init(attrs, defStyleAttr, defStyleRes);
    }

    public void setTitle(String title) {
        titleView.setText(title);
    }

    private void init(AttributeSet attrs, int defStyleAttr, int defStyleRes) {
        inflate(getContext(), R.layout.custom_view, this);

        titleView = findViewById(R.id.title_view);
    }
}

Step 2: Define a string attribute in the values/attrs.xml resource file:

<resources>
    <declare-styleable name="CustomView">
        <attr name="title" format="string"/>
    </declare-styleable>
</resources>

Step 3: Apply the @StringHandler annotation to the setTitle method to tell the Spyglass framework to route the attribute value to this method when the view is inflated.

@HandlesString(attributeId = R.styleable.CustomView_title)
public void setTitle(String title) {
    titleView.setText(title);
}

Now that your class has a Spyglass annotation, the Spyglass framework will detect it at compile-time and automatically generate the CustomView_SpyglassCompanion class.

Step 4: Use the generated class in the custom view's init method:

private void init(AttributeSet attrs, int defStyleAttr, int defStyleRes) {
    inflate(getContext(), R.layout.custom_view, this);

    titleView = findViewById(R.id.title_view);

    CustomView_SpyglassCompanion
            .builder()
            .withTarget(this)
            .withContext(getContext())
            .withAttributeSet(attrs)
            .withDefaultStyleAttribute(defStyleAttr)
            .withDefaultStyleResource(defStyleRes)
            .build()
            .callTargetMethodsNow();
}

That's it. Now when you instantiate the class from XML, the Spyglass companion interprets the attributes and makes the required method call. For example, if we inflate the following layout then setTitle will be called with "Hello, World!" as the argument.

<FrameLayout
    xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
    android:width="match_parent"
    android:height="match_parent">

The framework isn't limited to string resources has lots of different annotations for handling other resource types. It also has annotations for defining default values and for passing in placeholder values if your methods have multiple parameters.

Have a look at the Github repo for more information and examples.

Install-Module : The term 'Install-Module' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet

Another GUI based option to fix this error is to download the PackageManagement PowerShell Modules (msi installer) from Microsoft website and install the modules.

Once this is installed you will not get "'Install-Module' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet" error.

C++: constructor initializer for arrays

There is no way. You need a default constructor for array members and it will be called, afterwards, you can do any initialization you want in the constructor.

Javascript - removing undefined fields from an object

One could also use the JQuery filter for objects

var newobj = $(obj).filter(function(key) {
    return $(this)[key]!== undefined;
  })[0];

How to discard uncommitted changes in SourceTree?

On SourceTree for Mac, right click the files you want to discard (in the Files in the working tree list), and choose Reset.

On SourceTree for Windows, right click the files you want to discard (in the Working Copy Changes list), and choose Discard.

On git, you'd simply do:

git reset --hard to discard changes made to versioned files;

git clean -xdf to erase new (untracked) files, including ignored ones (the x option). d is to also remove untracked directories and f to force.

Swift Alamofire: How to get the HTTP response status code

Your error indicates that the operation is being cancelled for some reason. I'd need more details to understand why. But I think the bigger issue may be that since your endpoint https://host.com/a/path is bogus, there is no real server response to report, and hence you're seeing nil.

If you hit up a valid endpoint that serves up a proper response, you should see a non-nil value for res (using the techniques Sam mentions) in the form of a NSURLHTTPResponse object with properties like statusCode, etc.

Also, just to be clear, error is of type NSError. It tells you why the network request failed. The status code of the failure on the server side is actually a part of the response.

Hope that helps answer your main question.

Is an empty href valid?

Although this question is already answered (tl;dr: yes, an empty href value is valid), none of the existing answers references the relevant specifications.

An empty string can’t be a URI. However, the href attribute doesn’t only take URIs as value, but also URI references. An empty string may be a URI reference.

HTML 4.01

HTML 4.01 uses RFC 2396, where it says in section 4.2. Same-document References (bold emphasis mine):

A URI reference that does not contain a URI is a reference to the current document. In other words, an empty URI reference within a document is interpreted as a reference to the start of that document, and a reference containing only a fragment identifier is a reference to the identified fragment of that document.

RFC 2396 is obsoleted by RFC 3986 (which is currently IETF’s URI standard), which essentially says the same.

HTML5

HTML5 uses (valid URL potentially surrounded by spaces ? valid URL) W3C’s URL spec, which has been discontinued. WHATWG’s URL Standard should be used instead (see the last section).

HTML 5.1

HTML 5.1 uses (valid URL potentially surrounded by spaces ? valid URL) WHATWG’s URL Standard (see the next section).

WHATWG HTML

WHATWG’s HTML uses (valid URL potentially surrounded by spaces) the definition of valid URL string from WHATWG’s URL Standard, where it says that it can be a relative-URL-with-fragment string, which must at least be a relative-URL string, which can be a path-relative-scheme-less-URL string, which is a path-relative-URL string that doesn’t start with a scheme string followed by :, and its definition says (bold emphasis mine):

A path-relative-URL string must be zero or more URL-path-segment strings, separated from each other by U+002F (/), and not start with U+002F (/).

Make a simple fade in animation in Swift?

Swift only solution

Similar to Luca's anwer, I use a UIView extension. Compared to his solution I use DispatchQueue.main.async to make sure animations are done on the main thread, alpha parameter for fading to a specific value and optional duration parameters for cleaner code.

extension UIView {
  func fadeTo(_ alpha: CGFloat, duration: TimeInterval = 0.3) {
    DispatchQueue.main.async {
      UIView.animate(withDuration: duration) {
        self.alpha = alpha
      }
    }
  }

  func fadeIn(_ duration: TimeInterval = 0.3) {
    fadeTo(1.0, duration: duration)
  }

  func fadeOut(_ duration: TimeInterval = 0.3) {
    fadeTo(0.0, duration: duration)
  }
}

How to use it:

// fadeIn() - always animates to alpha = 1.0
yourView.fadeIn()     // uses default duration of 0.3
yourView.fadeIn(1.0) // uses custom duration (1.0 in this example)

// fadeOut() - always animates to alpha = 0.0
yourView.fadeOut()    // uses default duration of 0.3
yourView.fadeOut(1.0) // uses custom duration (1.0 in this example)

// fadeTo() - used if you want a custom alpha value
yourView.fadeTo(0.5)  // uses default duration of 0.3
yourView.fadeTo(0.5, duration: 1.0)
