showDialog deprecated. What's the alternative?

From http://developer.android.com/reference/android/app/Activity.html

public final void showDialog (int id) Added in API level 1

This method was deprecated in API level 13. Use the new DialogFragment class with FragmentManager instead; this is also available on older platforms through the Android compatibility package.

Simple version of showDialog(int, Bundle) that does not take any arguments. Simply calls showDialog(int, Bundle) with null arguments.

Why

  • A fragment that displays a dialog window, floating on top of its activity's window. This fragment contains a Dialog object, which it displays as appropriate based on the fragment's state. Control of the dialog (deciding when to show, hide, dismiss it) should be done through the API here, not with direct calls on the dialog.

How to add Active Directory user group as login in SQL Server

Here is my observation. I created a login (readonly) for a group windows(AD) user account but, its acting defiantly in different SQL servers. In the SQl servers that users can not see the databases I added view definition checked and also gave database execute permeation to the master database for avoiding error 229. I do not have this issue if I create a login for a user.

Connecting to remote MySQL server using PHP

  • firewall of the server must be set-up to enable incomming connections on port 3306
  • you must have a user in MySQL who is allowed to connect from % (any host) (see manual for details)

The current problem is the first one, but right after you resolve it you will likely get the second one.

Convert an integer to an array of digits

The <= in the for statement should be a <.

BTW, it is possible to do this much more efficiently without using strings, but instead using /10 and %10 of integers.

Integer.valueOf() vs. Integer.parseInt()

The difference between these two methods is:

  • parseXxx() returns the primitive type
  • valueOf() returns a wrapper object reference of the type.

Explaining Apache ZooKeeper

I understand the ZooKeeper in general but had problems with the terms "quorum" and "split brain" so maybe I can share my findings with you (I consider myself also a layman).

Let's say we have a ZooKeeper cluster of 5 servers. One of the servers will become the leader and the others will become followers.

  • These 5 servers form a quorum. Quorum simply means "these servers can vote upon who should be the leader".

  • So the voting is based on majority. Majority simply means "more than half" so more than half of the number of servers must agree for a specific server to become the leader.

  • So there is this bad thing that may happen called "split brain". A split brain is simply this, as far as I understand: The cluster of 5 servers splits into two parts, or let's call it "server teams", with maybe one part of 2 and the other of 3 servers. This is really a bad situation as if both "server teams" must execute a specific order how would you decide wich team should be preferred? They might have received different information from the clients. So it is really important to know what "server team" is still relevant and which one can/should be ignored.

  • Majority is also the reason you should use an odd number of servers. If you have 4 servers and a split brain where 2 servers seperate then both "server teams" could say "hey, we want to decide who is the leader!" but how should you decide which 2 servers you should choose? With 5 servers it's simple: The server team with 3 servers has the majority and is allowed to select the new leader.

  • Even if you just have 3 servers and one of them fails the other 2 still form the majority and can agree that one of them will become the new leader.

I realize once you think about it some time and understand the terms it's not so complicated anymore. I hope this also helps anyone in understanding these terms.

React Error: Target Container is not a DOM Element

Also you can do something like that:

document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(event) {
  React.renderComponent(
    CardBox({url: "/cards/?format=json", pollInterval: 2000}),
    document.getElementById("content")
  );
})

The DOMContentLoaded event fires when the initial HTML document has been completely loaded and parsed, without waiting for stylesheets, images, and subframes to finish loading.

Change input text border color without changing its height

Try this

<input type="text"/>

It will display same in all cross browser like mozilla , chrome and internet explorer.

<style>
    input{
       border:2px solid #FF0000;
    }
</style>

Dont add style inline because its not good practise, use class to add style for your input box.

CALL command vs. START with /WAIT option

For exe files, I suppose the differences are nearly unimportant.
But to start an exe you don't even need CALL.

When starting another batch it's a big difference,
as CALL will start it in the same window and the called batch has access to the same variable context.
So it can also change variables which affects the caller.

START will create a new cmd.exe for the called batch and without /b it will open a new window.
As it's a new context, variables can't be shared.

Differences

Using start /wait <prog>
- Changes of environment variables are lost when the <prog> ends
- The caller waits until the <prog> is finished

Using call <prog>
- For exe it can be ommited, because it's equal to just starting <prog>
- For an exe-prog the caller batch waits or starts the exe asynchronous, but the behaviour depends on the exe itself.
- For batch files, the caller batch continues, when the called <batch-file> finishes, WITHOUT call the control will not return to the caller batch

Addendum:

Using CALL can change the parameters (for batch and exe files), but only when they contain carets or percent signs.

call myProg param1 param^^2 "param^3" %%path%%

Will be expanded to (from within an batch file)

myProg param1 param2 param^^3 <content of path>

How to access full source of old commit in BitBucket?

For the record, you can also toy around URLs this way :

When browsing the latest source, you have something like : https://bitbucket.org/my/repo/src/latestcommithash/my.file?at=master

Simply change the commit hash and remove the GET parameter : https://bitbucket.org/my/repo/src/wantedcommithash/my.file

How to adjust the size of y axis labels only in R?

ucfagls is right, providing you use the plot() command. If not, please give us more detail.

In any case, you can control every axis seperately by using the axis() command and the xaxt/yaxt options in plot(). Using the data of ucfagls, this becomes :

plot(Y ~ X, data=foo,yaxt="n")
axis(2,cex.axis=2)

the option yaxt="n" is necessary to avoid that the plot command plots the y-axis without changing. For the x-axis, this works exactly the same :

plot(Y ~ X, data=foo,xaxt="n")
axis(1,cex.axis=2)

See also the help files ?par and ?axis

Edit : as it is for a barplot, look at the options cex.axis and cex.names :

tN <- table(sample(letters[1:5],100,replace=T,p=c(0.2,0.1,0.3,0.2,0.2)))

op <- par(mfrow=c(1,2))
barplot(tN, col=rainbow(5),cex.axis=0.5) # for the Y-axis
barplot(tN, col=rainbow(5),cex.names=0.5) # for the X-axis

what does mysql_real_escape_string() really do?

Best explained here.

http://www.w3schools.com/php/func_mysql_real_escape_string.asp

http://www.tizag.com/mysqlTutorial/mysql-php-sql-injection.php

It generally it helps to avoid SQL injection, for example consider the following code:

<?php
// Query database to check if there are any matching users
$query = "SELECT * FROM users WHERE user='{$_POST['username']}' AND password='{$_POST['password']}'";
mysql_query($query);

// We didn't check $_POST['password'], it could be anything the user wanted! For example:
$_POST['username'] = 'aidan';
$_POST['password'] = "' OR ''='";

// This means the query sent to MySQL would be:
echo $query;
?>

and a hacker can send a query like:

SELECT * FROM users WHERE user='aidan' AND password='' OR ''=''

This would allow anyone to log in without a valid password.

How can you have SharePoint Link Lists default to opening in a new window?

The same instance for SP2010; the Links List webpart will not automatically open in a new window, rather user must manually rt click Link object and select Open in New Window.

The add/ insert Link option withkin SP2010 will allow a user to manually configure the link to open in a new window.

Maybe SP2012 release will adrress this...

How to remove backslash on json_encode() function?

echo json_encode('Hello World\n');
// results in "Hello World\\\n"

From what I've found online, this is a bug introduced in JDK 1.7.0_45. It appears to also be present in JDK 1.7.0_60. A bug report on Oracle's website states that, while there was a fix, it was removed before the JDK was released. I do not know why the fix was removed, but it confirms what we've already suspected -- the JDK is still broken.

The bug report claims that the error is benign and should not cause any run-time problems, though one of the comments disagrees with that. In my own experience, I have been able to work without any problems using JDK 1.7.0_60 despite seeing the message.

If this issue is causing serious problems, here are a few things I would suggest:

  • Revert back to JDK 1.7.0_25 until a fix is added to the JDK.

  • Keep an eye on the bug report so that you are aware of any work being done on this issue. Maybe even add your own comment so Oracle is aware of the severity of the issue.

  • Try the JDK early releases as they come out. One of them might fix your problem.

Instructions for installing the JDK on Mac OS X are available at JDK 7 Installation for Mac OS X. It also contains instructions for removing the JDK.

Saving and loading objects and using pickle

The following works for me:

class Fruits: pass

banana = Fruits()

banana.color = 'yellow'
banana.value = 30

import pickle

filehandler = open("Fruits.obj","wb")
pickle.dump(banana,filehandler)
filehandler.close()

file = open("Fruits.obj",'rb')
object_file = pickle.load(file)
file.close()

print(object_file.color, object_file.value, sep=', ')
# yellow, 30

Disable scrolling when touch moving certain element

Note: As pointed out in the comments by @nevf, this solution may no longer work (at least in Chrome) due to performance changes. The recommendation is to use touch-action which is also suggested by @JohnWeisz's answer.

Similar to the answer given by @Llepwryd, I used a combination of ontouchstart and ontouchmove to prevent scrolling when it is on a certain element.

Taken as-is from a project of mine:

window.blockMenuHeaderScroll = false;
$(window).on('touchstart', function(e)
{
    if ($(e.target).closest('#mobileMenuHeader').length == 1)
    {
        blockMenuHeaderScroll = true;
    }
});
$(window).on('touchend', function()
{
    blockMenuHeaderScroll = false;
});
$(window).on('touchmove', function(e)
{
    if (blockMenuHeaderScroll)
    {
        e.preventDefault();
    }
});

Essentially, what I am doing is listening on the touch start to see whether it begins on an element that is a child of another using jQuery .closest and allowing that to turn on/off the touch movement doing scrolling. The e.target refers to the element that the touch start begins with.

You want to prevent the default on the touch move event however you also need to clear your flag for this at the end of the touch event otherwise no touch scroll events will work.

This can be accomplished without jQuery however for my usage, I already had jQuery and didn't need to code something up to find whether the element has a particular parent.

How to unstash only certain files?

For Windows users: curly braces have special meaning in PowerShell. You can either surround with single quotes or escape with backtick. For example:

git checkout 'stash@{0}' YourFile

Without it, you may receive an error:

How to give a Linux user sudo access?

This answer will do what you need, although usually you don't add specific usernames to sudoers. Instead, you have a group of sudoers and just add your user to that group when needed. This way you don't need to use visudo more than once when giving sudo permission to users.

If you're on Ubuntu, the group is most probably already set up and called admin:

$ sudo cat /etc/sudoers
#
# This file MUST be edited with the 'visudo' command as root.
#

...

# Members of the admin group may gain root privileges
%admin ALL=(ALL) ALL

# Allow members of group sudo to execute any command
%sudo   ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL

# See sudoers(5) for more information on "#include" directives:

#includedir /etc/sudoers.d

On other distributions, like Arch and some others, it's usually called wheel and you may need to set it up: Arch Wiki

To give users in the wheel group full root privileges when they precede a command with "sudo", uncomment the following line: %wheel ALL=(ALL) ALL

Also note that on most systems visudo will read the EDITOR environment variable or default to using vi. So you can try to do EDITOR=vim visudo to use vim as the editor.

To add a user to the group you should run (as root):

# usermod -a -G groupname username

where groupname is your group (say, admin or wheel) and username is the username (say, john).

How to create a HTML Cancel button that redirects to a URL

cancel is not a valid value for a type attribute, so the button is probably defaulting to submit and continuing to submit the form. You probably mean type="button".

(The javascript: should be removed though, while it doesn't do any harm, it is an entirely useless label)

You don't have any button-like functionality though, so would be better off with:

<a href="http://stackoverflow.com"> Cancel </a>

… possibly with some CSS to make it look like a button.

How can I calculate the difference between two ArrayLists?

I have used Guava Sets.difference.

The parameters are sets and not general collections, but a handy way to create sets from any collection (with unique items) is Guava ImmutableSet.copyOf(Iterable).

(I first posted this on a related/dupe question, but I'm copying it here too since I feel it is a good option that is so far missing.)

Auto-increment on partial primary key with Entity Framework Core

First of all you should not merge the Fluent Api with the data annotation so I would suggest you to use one of the below:

make sure you have correclty set the keys

modelBuilder.Entity<Foo>()
            .HasKey(p => new { p.Name, p.Id });
modelBuilder.Entity<Foo>().Property(p => p.Id).HasDatabaseGeneratedOption(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Identity);

OR you can achieve it using data annotation as well

public class Foo
{
    [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Identity)]
    [Key, Column(Order = 0)]
    public int Id { get; set; }

    [Key, Column(Order = 1)]
    public string Name{ get; set; }
}

Find all elements with a certain attribute value in jquery

You can use partial value of an attribute to detect a DOM element using (^) sign. For example you have divs like this:

<div id="abc_1"></div>
<div id="abc_2"></div>
<div id="xyz_3"></div>
<div id="xyz_4"></div>...

You can use the code:

var abc = $('div[id^=abc]')

This will return a DOM array of divs which have id starting with abc:

<div id="abc_1"></div>
<div id="abc_2"></div>

Here is the demo: http://jsfiddle.net/mCuWS/

Working with SQL views in Entity Framework Core

The EF Core doesn't create DBset for the SQL views automatically in the context calss, we can add them manually as below.

public partial class LocalDBContext : DbContext
{

    public LocalDBContext(DbContextOptions<LocalDBContext> options) : base(options)
    {

    }

    public virtual DbSet<YourView> YourView { get; set; }

    protected override void OnModelCreating(ModelBuilder modelBuilder)
    {
        modelBuilder.Entity<YourView>(entity => {
            entity.HasKey(e => e.ID);
            entity.ToTable("YourView");
            entity.Property(e => e.Name).HasMaxLength(50);
        });
    }

}

The sample view is defined as below with few properties

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;

namespace Project.Entities
{
    public partial class YourView
    {
        public string Name { get; set; }
        public int ID { get; set; }
    }
}

After adding a class for the view and DB set in the context class, you are good to use the view object through your context object in the controller.

How to convert a Java String to an ASCII byte array?

I found the solution. Actually Base64 class is not available in Android. Link is given below for more information.

byte[] byteArray;
     byteArray= json.getBytes(StandardCharsets.US_ASCII);
    String encoded=Base64.encodeBytes(byteArray);
    userLogin(encoded);

How to convert int to date in SQL Server 2008

Reading through this helps solve a similar problem. The data is in decimal datatype - [DOB] [decimal](8, 0) NOT NULL - eg - 19700109. I want to get at the month. The solution is to combine SUBSTRING with CONVERT to VARCHAR.

    SELECT [NUM]
       ,SUBSTRING(CONVERT(VARCHAR, DOB),5,2) AS mob
    FROM [Dbname].[dbo].[Tablename]

SQLAlchemy create_all() does not create tables

If someone is having issues with creating tables by using files dedicated to each model, be aware of running the "create_all" function from a file different from the one where that function is declared. So, if the filesystem is like this:

Root
--app.py <-- file from which app will be run
--models
----user.py <-- file with "User" model
----order.py <-- file with "Order" model
----database.py <-- file with database and "create_all" function declaration

Be careful about calling the "create_all" function from app.py.

This concept is explained better by the answer to this thread posted by @SuperShoot

Benefits of using the conditional ?: (ternary) operator

There is some performance benefit of using the the ? operator in eg. MS Visual C++, but this is a really a compiler specific thing. The compiler can actually optimize out the conditional branch in some cases.

Downloading MySQL dump from command line

In latest versions of mysql, at least in mine, you cannot put your pass in the command directly.

You have to run:

mysqldump -u [uname] -p db_name > db_backup.sql

and then it will ask for the password.

WCF service startup error "This collection already contains an address with scheme http"

Error retrieving parent for item: No resource found that matches the given name '@android:style/TextAppearance.Holo.Widget.ActionBar.Title'

This is an old post, but if anyone comes up with this problem, i post what solved my problem:

I was trying to add the Action Bar Sherlock to my proyect when i get the error:

Error retrieving parent for item: No resource found that matches the given name 'android:Widget.Holo.ActionBar'.

I turns out that the action bar sherlock proyect and my proyect had differents minSdkVersion and targetSdkVersion. Changing that parameters to match in both proyect solved my problem.

<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="7" android:targetSdkVersion="17"/>

Common HTTPclient and proxy

Although this question is very old, but I see still there are no exact answer. I will try to answer the question here.

I believe the question in short here is how to set the proxy settings for the Apache commons HttpClient (org.apache.commons.httpclient.HttpClient).

Code snippet below should work :

HttpClient client = new HttpClient();
HostConfiguration hostConfiguration = client.getHostConfiguration();
hostConfiguration.setProxy("localhost", 8080);
client.setHostConfiguration(hostConfiguration);

How does HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name know which usernames exist?

The HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name returns null

This depends on whether the authentication mode is set to Forms or Windows in your web.config file.

For example, if I write the authentication like this:

<authentication mode="Forms"/>

Then because the authentication mode="Forms", I will get null for the username. But if I change the authentication mode to Windows like this:

<authentication mode="Windows"/>

I can run the application again and check for the username, and I will get the username successfully.

For more information, see System.Web.HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name Vs System.Environment.UserName in ASP.NET.

Should I use `import os.path` or `import os`?

Common sense works here: os is a module, and os.path is a module, too. So just import the module you want to use:

  • If you want to use functionalities in the os module, then import os.

  • If you want to use functionalities in the os.path module, then import os.path.

  • If you want to use functionalities in both modules, then import both modules:

    import os
    import os.path

What is a .pid file and what does it contain?

Pidfile contains pid of a process. It is a convention allowing long running processes to be more self-aware. Server process can inspect it to stop itself, or have heuristic that its other instance is already running. Pidfiles can also be used to conventiently kill risk manually, e.g. pkill -F <some.pid>

int array to string

The most efficient way is not to convert each int into a string, but rather create one string out of an array of chars. Then the garbage collector only has one new temp object to worry about.

int[] arr = {0,1,2,3,0,1};
string result = new string(Array.ConvertAll<int,char>(arr, x => Convert.ToChar(x + '0')));

How do I tell Matplotlib to create a second (new) plot, then later plot on the old one?

If you find yourself doing things like this regularly it may be worth investigating the object-oriented interface to matplotlib. In your case:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import numpy as np

x = np.arange(5)
y = np.exp(x)
fig1, ax1 = plt.subplots()
ax1.plot(x, y)
ax1.set_title("Axis 1 title")
ax1.set_xlabel("X-label for axis 1")

z = np.sin(x)
fig2, (ax2, ax3) = plt.subplots(nrows=2, ncols=1) # two axes on figure
ax2.plot(x, z)
ax3.plot(x, -z)

w = np.cos(x)
ax1.plot(x, w) # can continue plotting on the first axis

It is a little more verbose but it's much clearer and easier to keep track of, especially with several figures each with multiple subplots.

Javascript How to define multiple variables on a single line?

Using Javascript's es6 or node, you can do the following:

var [a,b,c,d] = [0,1,2,3]

And if you want to easily print multiple variables in a single line, just do this:

console.log(a, b, c, d)

0 1 2 3

This is similar to @alex gray 's answer here, but this example is in Javascript instead of CoffeeScript.

Note that this uses Javascript's array destructuring assignment

HTML button to NOT submit form

For accessibility reason, I could not pull it off with multiple type=submit buttons. The only way to work natively with a form with multiple buttons but ONLY one can submit the form when hitting the Enter key is to ensure that only one of them is of type=submit while others are in other type such as type=button. By this way, you can benefit from the better user experience in dealing with a form on a browser in terms of keyboard support.

Spark SQL: apply aggregate functions to a list of columns

Another example of the same concept - but say - you have 2 different columns - and you want to apply different agg functions to each of them i.e

f.groupBy("col1").agg(sum("col2").alias("col2"), avg("col3").alias("col3"), ...)

Here is the way to achieve it - though I do not yet know how to add the alias in this case

See the example below - Using Maps

val Claim1 = StructType(Seq(StructField("pid", StringType, true),StructField("diag1", StringType, true),StructField("diag2", StringType, true), StructField("allowed", IntegerType, true), StructField("allowed1", IntegerType, true)))
val claimsData1 = Seq(("PID1", "diag1", "diag2", 100, 200), ("PID1", "diag2", "diag3", 300, 600), ("PID1", "diag1", "diag5", 340, 680), ("PID2", "diag3", "diag4", 245, 490), ("PID2", "diag2", "diag1", 124, 248))

val claimRDD1 = sc.parallelize(claimsData1)
val claimRDDRow1 = claimRDD1.map(p => Row(p._1, p._2, p._3, p._4, p._5))
val claimRDD2DF1 = sqlContext.createDataFrame(claimRDDRow1, Claim1)

val l = List("allowed", "allowed1")
val exprs = l.map((_ -> "sum")).toMap
claimRDD2DF1.groupBy("pid").agg(exprs) show false
val exprs = Map("allowed" -> "sum", "allowed1" -> "avg")

claimRDD2DF1.groupBy("pid").agg(exprs) show false

Insert data through ajax into mysql database

The ajax is going to be a javascript snippet that passes information to a small php file that does what you want. So in your page, instead of all that php, you want a little javascript, preferable jquery:

function fun()
{
    $.get('\addEmail.php', {email : $(this).val()}, function(data) {
        //here you would write the "you ve been successfully subscribed" div
    });
}

also you input would have to be:

<input type="button" value="subscribe" class="submit" onclick="fun();" />

last the file addEmail.php should look something like:

mysql_connect("localhost","root","");
mysql_select_db("eciticket_db");

error_reporting(E_ALL && ~E_NOTICE);

$email=mysql_real_escape_string($_GET['email']);
$sql="INSERT INTO newsletter_email(email) VALUES ('$email')";
$result=mysql_query($sql);
if($result){
echo "You have been successfully subscribed.";
}
 if(!$sql)
die(mysql_error());

mysql_close();

Also sergey is right, you should use mysqli. That's not everything, but enough to get you started.

Conditional Replace Pandas

I would use lambda function on a Series of a DataFrame like this:

f = lambda x: 0 if x>100 else 1
df['my_column'] = df['my_column'].map(f)

I do not assert that this is an efficient way, but it works fine.

How to develop Desktop Apps using HTML/CSS/JavaScript?

You may start with Titanium for desktop dev. Also you may have a look at Chromium Embedded Framework. It's basically a web browser control based on chromium.

It's written in C++ so you can do all the low level OS stuff you want(Growl, tray icons, local file access, com ports, etc) in your container app, and then all the application logic and gui in html/javascript. It allows you to intercept any http request to either serve local resources or perform some custom action. For example, a request to http://localapp.com/SetTrayIconState?state=active could be intercepted by the container and then call the C++ function to update the tray icon.

It also allows you to create functions that can be called directly from JavaScript.

It's very difficult to debug JavaScript directly in CEF. There's no support for anything like Firebug.

You may also try AppJS.com (Helps to build Desktop Applications. for Linux, Windows and Mac using HTML, CSS and JavaScript)

Also, as pointed out by @Clint, the team at brackets.io (Adobe) created an awesome shell using Chromium Embedded Framework that makes it much easier to get started. It is called the brackets shell: github.com/adobe/brackets-shell Find out more about it here: clintberry.com/2013/html5-desktop-apps-with-brackets-shell

How to count the number of observations in R like Stata command count

The with function will let you use shorthand column references and sum will count TRUE results from the expression(s).

sum(with(aaa, sex==1 & group1==2))
## [1] 3

sum(with(aaa, sex==1 & group2=="A"))
## [1] 2

As @mnel pointed out, you can also do:

nrow(aaa[aaa$sex==1 & aaa$group1==2,])
## [1] 3

nrow(aaa[aaa$sex==1 & aaa$group2=="A",])
## [1] 2

The benefit of that is that you can do:

nrow(aaa)
## [1] 6

And, the behaviour matches Stata's count almost exactly (syntax notwithstanding).

How can I use async/await at the top level?

You can now use top level await in Node v13.3.0

const { data } = await axios.get("https://api.namefake.com/");
console.log(data);

run it with --harmony-top-level-await flag

node --harmony-top-level-await index.js

Unpacking a list / tuple of pairs into two lists / tuples

>>> source_list = ('1','a'),('2','b'),('3','c'),('4','d')
>>> list1, list2 = zip(*source_list)
>>> list1
('1', '2', '3', '4')
>>> list2
('a', 'b', 'c', 'd')

Edit: Note that zip(*iterable) is its own inverse:

>>> list(source_list) == zip(*zip(*source_list))
True

When unpacking into two lists, this becomes:

>>> list1, list2 = zip(*source_list)
>>> list(source_list) == zip(list1, list2)
True

Is there any way to call a function periodically in JavaScript?

Please note that setInterval() is often not the best solution for periodic execution - It really depends on what javascript you're actually calling periodically.

eg. If you use setInterval() with a period of 1000ms and in the periodic function you make an ajax call that occasionally takes 2 seconds to return you will be making another ajax call before the first response gets back. This is usually undesirable.

Many libraries have periodic methods that protect against the pitfalls of using setInterval naively such as the Prototype example given by Nelson.

To achieve more robust periodic execution with a function that has a jQuery ajax call in it, consider something like this:

function myPeriodicMethod() {
  $.ajax({
    url: ...,
    success: function(data) {
      ...
    },
    complete: function() {
      // schedule the next request *only* when the current one is complete:
      setTimeout(myPeriodicMethod, 1000);
    }
  });
}

// schedule the first invocation:
setTimeout(myPeriodicMethod, 1000);

Another approach is to use setTimeout but track elapsed time in a variable and then set the timeout delay on each invocation dynamically to execute a function as close to the desired interval as possible but never faster than you can get responses back.

Understanding generators in Python

It helps to make a clear distinction between the function foo, and the generator foo(n):

def foo(n):
    yield n
    yield n+1

foo is a function. foo(6) is a generator object.

The typical way to use a generator object is in a loop:

for n in foo(6):
    print(n)

The loop prints

# 6
# 7

Think of a generator as a resumable function.

yield behaves like return in the sense that values that are yielded get "returned" by the generator. Unlike return, however, the next time the generator gets asked for a value, the generator's function, foo, resumes where it left off -- after the last yield statement -- and continues to run until it hits another yield statement.

Behind the scenes, when you call bar=foo(6) the generator object bar is defined for you to have a next attribute.

You can call it yourself to retrieve values yielded from foo:

next(bar)    # Works in Python 2.6 or Python 3.x
bar.next() # Works in Python 2.5+, but is deprecated. Use next() if possible.

When foo ends (and there are no more yielded values), calling next(bar) throws a StopInteration error.

RESTful Authentication via Spring

Regarding tokens carrying information, JSON Web Tokens (http://jwt.io) is a brilliant technology. The main concept is to embed information elements (claims) into the token, and then signing the whole token so that the validating end can verify that the claims are indeed trustworthy.

I use this Java implementation: https://bitbucket.org/b_c/jose4j/wiki/Home

There is also a Spring module (spring-security-jwt), but I haven't looked into what it supports.

Naming conventions for Java methods that return boolean

I want to post this link as it may help further for peeps checking this answer and looking for more java style convention

Java Programming Style Guidelines

Item "2.13 is prefix should be used for boolean variables and methods." is specifically relevant and suggests the is prefix.

The style guide goes on to suggest:

There are a few alternatives to the is prefix that fits better in some situations. These are has, can and should prefixes:

boolean hasLicense();
boolean canEvaluate();
boolean shouldAbort = false;

If you follow the Guidelines I believe the appropriate method would be named:

shouldCreateFreshSnapshot()

}

usage

config('yourconfig.company');

How to get array keys in Javascript?

You need to call the hasOwnProperty function to check whether the property is actually defined on the object itself (as opposed to its prototype), like this:

for (var key in widthRange) {
    if (key === 'length' || !widthRange.hasOwnProperty(key)) continue;
    var value = widthRange[key];
}

Note that you need a separate check for length.
However, you shouldn't be using an array here at all; you should use a regular object. All Javascript objects function as associative arrays.

For example:

var widthRange = { };  //Or new Object()
widthRange[46] = { sel:46, min:0,  max:52 };
widthRange[66] = { sel:66, min:52, max:70 };
widthRange[90] = { sel:90, min:70, max:94 };

Force git stash to overwrite added files

Use git checkout instead of git stash apply:

$ git checkout stash -- .
$ git commit

This will restore all the files in the current directory to their stashed version.

If there are changes to other files in the working directory that should be kept, here is a less heavy-handed alternative:

$ git merge --squash --strategy-option=theirs stash

If there are changes in the index, or the merge will touch files with local changes, git will refuse to merge. Individual files can be checked out from the stash using

$ git checkout stash -- <paths...>

or interactively with

$ git checkout -p stash

How to remove responsive features in Twitter Bootstrap 3?

This is explained in the official Bootstrap 3 release docs:

Steps to disable responsive views

To disable responsive features, follow these steps. See it in action in the modified template below.

  1. Remove (or just don't add) the viewport <meta> mentioned in the CSS docs
  2. Remove the max-width on the .container for all grid tiers with max-width: none !important; and set a regular width like width: 970px;. Be sure that this comes after the default Bootstrap CSS. You can optionally avoid the !important with media queries or some selector-fu.
  3. If using navbars, undo all the navbar collapsing and expanding behavior (this is too much to show here, so peep the example).
  4. For grid layouts, make use of .col-xs-* classes in addition to or in place of the medium/large ones. Don't worry, the extra-small device grid scales up to all resolutions, so you're set there.

You'll still need Respond.js for IE8 (since our media queries are still there and need to be picked up). This just disables the "mobile site" of Bootstrap.

Determine if Python is running inside virtualenv

The most reliable way to check for this is to check whether sys.prefix == sys.base_prefix. If they are equal, you are not in a virtual environment; if they are unequal, you are. Inside a virtual environment, sys.prefix points to the virtual environment, and sys.base_prefix is the prefix of the system Python the virtualenv was created from.

The above always works for Python 3 stdlib venv and for recent virtualenv (since version 20). Older versions of virtualenv used sys.real_prefix instead of sys.base_prefix (and sys.real_prefix did not exist outside a virtual environment), and in Python 3.3 and earlier sys.base_prefix did not ever exist. So a fully robust check that handles all of these cases could look like this:

import sys

def get_base_prefix_compat():
    """Get base/real prefix, or sys.prefix if there is none."""
    return getattr(sys, "base_prefix", None) or getattr(sys, "real_prefix", None) or sys.prefix

def in_virtualenv():
    return get_base_prefix_compat() != sys.prefix

If you only care about supported Python versions and latest virtualenv, you can replace get_base_prefix_compat() with simply sys.base_prefix.

Using the VIRTUAL_ENV environment variable is not reliable. It is set by the virtualenv activate shell script, but a virtualenv can be used without activation by directly running an executable from the virtualenv's bin/ (or Scripts) directory, in which case $VIRTUAL_ENV will not be set. Or a non-virtualenv Python binary can be executed directly while a virtualenv is activated in the shell, in which case $VIRTUAL_ENV may be set in a Python process that is not actually running in that virtualenv.

How to delete an element from a Slice in Golang

    fmt.Println(x)
    x = append(x[:2], x[4:]...)//deletes 6 and 7
    fmt.Println(x)

How do you Make A Repeat-Until Loop in C++?

Repeat is supposed to be a simple loop n times loop... a conditionless version of a loop.

#define repeat(n) for (int i = 0; i < n; i++)

repeat(10) {
    //do stuff
}

you can also also add an extra barce to isolate the i variable even more

#define repeat(n) { for (int i = 0; i < n; i++)
#define endrepeat }

repeat(10) {
    //do stuff
} endrepeat;

[edit] Someone posted a concern about passing a something other than a value, such as an expression. just change to loop to run backwards, causing the expression to be evaluated only once

#define repeat(n) { for (int i = (n); i > 0; --i)

Check whether a value exists in JSON object

You could improve on the answer from Ponmudi VN:

  • Shorter Code
  • Look for a key and a value

See this fiddle: https://jsfiddle.net/solarbaypilot/sn3wtea2/

    });
}

document.getElementById('dog').innerHTML = _isContains(JSONObject, "name", "dog");
document.getElementById('puppy').innerHTML = _isContains(JSONObject, "name", "puppy");

What's the difference between a Future and a Promise?

According to this discussion, Promise has finally been called CompletableFuture for inclusion in Java 8, and its javadoc explains:

A Future that may be explicitly completed (setting its value and status), and may be used as a CompletionStage, supporting dependent functions and actions that trigger upon its completion.

An example is also given on the list:

f.then((s -> aStringFunction(s)).thenAsync(s -> ...);

Note that the final API is slightly different but allows similar asynchronous execution:

CompletableFuture<String> f = ...;
f.thenApply(this::modifyString).thenAccept(System.out::println);

Default value in an asp.net mvc view model

What will you have? You'll probably end up with a default search and a search that you load from somewhere. Default search requires a default constructor, so make one like Dismissile has already suggested.

If you load the search criteria from elsewhere, then you should probably have some mapping logic.

UNIX nonblocking I/O: O_NONBLOCK vs. FIONBIO

Prior to standardization there was ioctl(...FIONBIO...) and fcntl(...O_NDELAY...), but these behaved inconsistently between systems, and even within the same system. For example, it was common for FIONBIO to work on sockets and O_NDELAY to work on ttys, with a lot of inconsistency for things like pipes, fifos, and devices. And if you didn't know what kind of file descriptor you had, you'd have to set both to be sure. But in addition, a non-blocking read with no data available was also indicated inconsistently; depending on the OS and the type of file descriptor the read may return 0, or -1 with errno EAGAIN, or -1 with errno EWOULDBLOCK. Even today, setting FIONBIO or O_NDELAY on Solaris causes a read with no data to return 0 on a tty or pipe, or -1 with errno EAGAIN on a socket. However 0 is ambiguous since it is also returned for EOF.

POSIX addressed this with the introduction of O_NONBLOCK, which has standardized behavior across different systems and file descriptor types. Because existing systems usually want to avoid any changes to behavior which might break backward compatibility, POSIX defined a new flag rather than mandating specific behavior for one of the others. Some systems like Linux treat all 3 the same, and also define EAGAIN and EWOULDBLOCK to the same value, but systems wishing to maintain some other legacy behavior for backward compatibility can do so when the older mechanisms are used.

New programs should use fcntl(...O_NONBLOCK...), as standardized by POSIX.

How to implement WiX installer upgrade?

In the newest versions (from the 3.5.1315.0 beta), you can use the MajorUpgrade element instead of using your own.

For example, we use this code to do automatic upgrades. It prevents downgrades, giving a localised error message, and also prevents upgrading an already existing identical version (i.e. only lower versions are upgraded):

<MajorUpgrade
    AllowDowngrades="no" DowngradeErrorMessage="!(loc.NewerVersionInstalled)"
    AllowSameVersionUpgrades="no"
    />

Change GitHub Account username

Yes, this is an old question. But it's misleading, as this was the first result in my search, and both the answers aren't correct anymore.

You can change your Github account name at any time.

To do this, click your profile picture > Settings > Account Settings > Change Username.

Links to your repositories will redirect to the new URLs, but they should be updated on other sites because someone who chooses your abandoned username can override the links. Links to your profile page will be 404'd.

For more information, see the official help page.

And furthermore, if you want to change your username to something else, but that specific username is being taken up by someone else who has been completely inactive for the entire time their account has existed, you can report their account for name squatting.

What's the best way to generate a UML diagram from Python source code?

It is worth mentioning Gaphor. A Python modelling/UML tool.

A button to start php script, how?

I know this question is 5 years old, but for anybody wondering how to do this without re-rendering the main page. This solution uses the dart editor/scripting language.

You could have an <object> tag that contains a data attribute. Make the <object> 1px by 1px and then use something like dart to dynamically change the <object>'s data attribute which re-renders the data in the 1px by 1px object.

HTML Script:

<object id="external_source" type="text/html" data="" width="1px" height="1px">
</object>

<button id="button1" type="button">Start Script</button>

<script async type="application/dart" src="dartScript.dart"></script>
<script async src="packages/browser/dart.js"></script>

someScript.php:

<?php
echo 'hello world';
?>

dartScript.dart:

import 'dart:html';

InputElement button1;
ObjectElement externalSource;

void main() {
    button1 = querySelector('#button1')
        ..onClick.listen(runExternalSource);

    externalSource = querySelector('#external_source');
}

void runExternalSource(Event e) {
    externalSource.setAttribute('data', 'someScript.php');
}

So long as you aren't posting any information and you are just looking to run a script, this should work just fine.

Just build the dart script using "pub Build(generate JS)" and then upload the package onto your server.

fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository

I faced the same problem when I renamed my repository on GitHub. I tried to push at which point I got the error

fatal: 'origin' does not appear to be a git repository
fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly

I had to change the URL using

git remote set-url origin ssh://[email protected]/username/newRepoName.git

After this all commands started working fine. You can check the change by using

git remote -v

In my case after successfull change it showed correct renamed repo in URL

[aniket@alok Android]$ git remote -v
origin  ssh://[email protected]/aniket91/TicTacToe.git (fetch)
origin  ssh://[email protected]/aniket91/TicTacToe.git (push)

TypeError: cannot perform reduce with flexible type

When your are trying to apply prod on string type of value like:

['-214' '-153' '-58' ..., '36' '191' '-37']

you will get the error.

Solution: Append only integer value like [1,2,3], and you will get your expected output.

If the value is in string format before appending then, in the array you can convert the type into int type and store it in a list.

When to use React "componentDidUpdate" method?

I have used componentDidUpdate() in highchart.

Here is a simple example of this component.

import React, { PropTypes, Component } from 'react';
window.Highcharts = require('highcharts');

export default class Chartline extends React.Component {
  constructor(props) {
    super(props);
    this.state = {
      chart: ''
    };
  }

  public componentDidUpdate() {
    // console.log(this.props.candidate, 'this.props.candidate')
    if (this.props.category) {
      const category = this.props.category ? this.props.category : {};
      console.log('category', category);
      window.Highcharts.chart('jobcontainer_' + category._id, {
        title: {
          text: ''
        },
        plotOptions: {
          series: {
            cursor: 'pointer'
          }
        },
        chart: {
          defaultSeriesType: 'spline'
        },
        xAxis: {
          // categories: candidate.dateArr,

Using Get-childitem to get a list of files modified in the last 3 days

Very similar to previous responses, but the is from the current directory, looks at any file and only for ones that are 4 days old. This is what I needed for my research and the above answers were all very helpful. Thanks.

Get-ChildItem -Path . -Recurse| ? {$_.LastWriteTime -gt (Get-Date).AddDays(-4)}

Command Prompt Error 'C:\Program' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file

I encountered a similar problem using windows command line for R script, Rscript.exe, which is very sensitive to spaces in the path. The solution was to create a virtual path to the binary folder using the windows subst command.

The following fails: "C:\Program Files\R\R-3.4.0\bin\Rscript.exe"

Doing following succeeds:

subst Z: "C:\Program Files\R\R-3.4.0"
Z:\bin\Rscript.exe

The reason the above-proposed solutions didn't work, evidently, has to do with the Rscript.exe executable's own internal path resolution from its working directory (which has a space in it) rather the windows command line being confused with the space. So using ~ or " to resolve the issue at the command line is moot. The executable must be called within a path lacking spaces.

Is it fine to have foreign key as primary key?

I would not do that. I would keep the profileID as primary key of the table Profile

A foreign key is just a referential constraint between two tables

One could argue that a primary key is necessary as the target of any foreign keys which refer to it from other tables. A foreign key is a set of one or more columns in any table (not necessarily a candidate key, let alone the primary key, of that table) which may hold the value(s) found in the primary key column(s) of some other table. So we must have a primary key to match the foreign key. Or must we? The only purpose of the primary key in the primary key/foreign key pair is to provide an unambiguous join - to maintain referential integrity with respect to the "foreign" table which holds the referenced primary key. This insures that the value to which the foreign key refers will always be valid (or null, if allowed).

What is @ModelAttribute in Spring MVC?

So I will try to explain it in simpler way. Let's have:

public class Person {
    private String name;

    public String getName() {
        return name;
    }

    public void setName(final String name) {
        this.name = name;
    }
}

As described in the Spring MVC documentation - the @ModelAttribute annotation can be used on methods or on method arguments. And of course we can have both use at the same time in one controller.

1.Method annotation

@ModelAttribute(“cities”)
 public List<String> checkOptions(){
 return new Arrays.asList(new[]{“Sofia”,”Pleven","Ruse”});//and so on
}

Purpose of such method is to add attribute in the model. So in our case cities key will have the list new Arras.asList(new[]{“Sofia”,”Pleven","Ruse”}) as value in the Model (you can think of Model as map(key:value)). @ModelAttribute methods in a controller are invoked before @RequestMapping methods, within the same controller.

Here we want to add to the Model common information which will be used in the form to display to the user. For example it can be used to fill a HTML select:

enter image description here

2.Method argument

public String findPerson(@ModelAttriute(value="person") Person person) {
    //..Some logic with person
    return "person.jsp";
}

An @ModelAttribute on a method argument indicates the argument should be retrieved from the model. So in this case we expect that we have in the Model person object as key and we want to get its value and put it to the method argument Person person. If such does not exists or (sometimes you misspell the (value="persson")) then Spring will not find it in the Model and will create empty Person object using its defaults. Then will take the request parameters and try to data bind them in the Person object using their names.

name="Dmitrij"&countries=Lesoto&sponsor.organization="SilkRoad"&authorizedFunds=&authorizedHours=&

So we have name and it will be bind to Person.name using setName(String name). So in

//..Some logic with person

we have access to this filled name with value "Dimitrij".

Of course Spring can bind more complex objects like Lists, Maps, List of Sets of Maps and so on but behind the scene it makes the data binding magic.

  1. We can have at the same time model annotated method and request method handler with @ModelAttribute in the arguments. Then we have to union the rules.

  2. Of course we have tons of different situations - @ModelAttribute methods can also be defined in an @ControllerAdvice and so on...

Custom pagination view in Laravel 5

A quick JS fix for Bootstrap 4 pagination in Laravel 5+

Simply place the below script within your page:

    <script>
            $('.pagination li').addClass('page-item');
            $('.pagination li a').addClass('page-link');
            $('.pagination span').addClass('page-link');

    </script>

Advantages: saves server CPU, needs no adjustments in your app.

Using JavaScript to display a Blob

In your example, you should createElement('img').

In your link, base64blob != Base64.encode(blob).

This works, as long as your data is valid http://jsfiddle.net/SXFwP/ (I didn't have any BMP images so I had to use PNG).

MySQL - SELECT WHERE field IN (subquery) - Extremely slow why?

I have reformatted your slow sql query with www.prettysql.net

SELECT *
FROM some_table
WHERE
 relevant_field in
 (
  SELECT relevant_field
  FROM some_table
  GROUP BY relevant_field
  HAVING COUNT ( * ) > 1
 );

When using a table in both the query and the subquery, you should always alias both, like this:

SELECT *
FROM some_table as t1
WHERE
 t1.relevant_field in
 (
  SELECT t2.relevant_field
  FROM some_table as t2
  GROUP BY t2.relevant_field
  HAVING COUNT ( t2.relevant_field ) > 1
 );

Does that help?

How to destroy Fragment?

If you are in the fragment itself, you need to call this. Your fragment needs to be the fragment that is being called. Enter code:

getFragmentManager().beginTransaction().remove(yourFragment).commitAllowingStateLoss();

or if you are using supportLib, then you need to call:

getSupportFragmentManager().beginTransaction().remove(yourFragment).commitAllowingStateLoss();

Spring MVC @PathVariable with dot (.) is getting truncated

Spring considers that anything behind the last dot is a file extension such as .jsonor .xml and trucate it to retrieve your parameter.

So if you have /somepath/{variable} :

  • /somepath/param, /somepath/param.json, /somepath/param.xml or /somepath/param.anything will result in a param with value param
  • /somepath/param.value.json, /somepath/param.value.xml or /somepath/param.value.anything will result in a param with value param.value

if you change your mapping to /somepath/{variable:.+} as suggested, any dot, including the last one will be consider as part of your parameter :

  • /somepath/param will result in a param with value param
  • /somepath/param.json will result in a param with value param.json
  • /somepath/param.xml will result in a param with value param.xml
  • /somepath/param.anything will result in a param with value param.anything
  • /somepath/param.value.json will result in a param with value param.value.json
  • ...

If you don't care of extension recognition, you can disable it by overriding mvc:annotation-driven automagic :

<bean id="handlerMapping"
      class="org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.method.annotation.RequestMappingHandlerMapping">
    <property name="contentNegotiationManager" ref="contentNegotiationManager"/>
    <property name="useSuffixPatternMatch" value="false"/>
</bean>

So, again, if you have /somepath/{variable} :

  • /somepath/param, /somepath/param.json, /somepath/param.xml or /somepath/param.anything will result in a param with value param
  • /somepath/param.value.json, /somepath/param.value.xml or /somepath/param.value.anything will result in a param with value param.value

note : the difference from the default config is visible only if you have a mapping like somepath/something.{variable}. see Resthub project issue

if you want to keep extension management, since Spring 3.2 you can also set the useRegisteredSuffixPatternMatch property of RequestMappingHandlerMapping bean in order to keep suffixPattern recognition activated but limited to registered extension.

Here you define only json and xml extensions :

<bean id="handlerMapping"
      class="org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.method.annotation.RequestMappingHandlerMapping">
    <property name="contentNegotiationManager" ref="contentNegotiationManager"/>
    <property name="useRegisteredSuffixPatternMatch" value="true"/>
</bean>

<bean id="contentNegotiationManager" class="org.springframework.web.accept.ContentNegotiationManagerFactoryBean">
    <property name="favorPathExtension" value="false"/>
    <property name="favorParameter" value="true"/>
    <property name="mediaTypes">
        <value>
            json=application/json
            xml=application/xml
        </value>
    </property>
</bean>

Note that mvc:annotation-driven accepts now a contentNegotiation option to provide a custom bean but the property of RequestMappingHandlerMapping has to be changed to true (default false) (cf. https://jira.springsource.org/browse/SPR-7632).

For that reason, you still have to override the all mvc:annotation-driven configuration. I opened a ticket to Spring to ask for a custom RequestMappingHandlerMapping : https://jira.springsource.org/browse/SPR-11253. Please vote if you are intereted in.

While overriding, be carreful to consider also custom Execution management overriding. Otherwise, all your custom Exception mappings will fail. You will have to reuse messageCoverters with a list bean :

<bean id="validator" class="org.springframework.validation.beanvalidation.LocalValidatorFactoryBean" />
<bean id="conversionService" class="org.springframework.format.support.FormattingConversionServiceFactoryBean" />

<util:list id="messageConverters">
    <bean class="your.custom.message.converter.IfAny"></bean>

    <bean class="org.springframework.http.converter.StringHttpMessageConverter"></bean>

    <bean class="org.springframework.http.converter.xml.Jaxb2RootElementHttpMessageConverter"></bean>
    <bean class="org.springframework.http.converter.json.MappingJacksonHttpMessageConverter"></bean>
</util:list>

<bean name="exceptionHandlerExceptionResolver"
      class="org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.method.annotation.ExceptionHandlerExceptionResolver">
    <property name="order" value="0"/>
    <property name="messageConverters" ref="messageConverters"/>
</bean>

      class="org.springframework.web.servlet.mvc.method.annotation.RequestMappingHandlerAdapter">

        </bean>
    </property>

I implemented, in the open source project Resthub that I am part of, a set of tests on these subjects : see https://github.com/resthub/resthub-spring-stack/pull/219/files & https://github.com/resthub/resthub-spring-stack/issues/217

c++ array assignment of multiple values

You have to replace the values one by one such as in a for-loop or copying another array over another such as using memcpy(..) or std::copy

e.g.

for (int i = 0; i < arrayLength; i++) {
    array[i] = newValue[i];
}

Take care to ensure proper bounds-checking and any other checking that needs to occur to prevent an out of bounds problem.

How to return XML in ASP.NET?

Ideally you would use an ashx to send XML although I do allow code in an ASPX to intercept normal execution.

Response.Clear()

I don't use this if you not sure you've dumped anything in the response already the go find it and get rid of it.

Response.ContentType = "text/xml"

Definitely, a common client will not accept the content as XML without this content type present.

 Response.Charset = "UTF-8";

Let the response class handle building the content type header properly. Use UTF-8 unless you have a really, really good reason not to.

Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.NoCache);
Response.Cache.SetAllowResponseInBrowserHistory(true);

If you don't send cache headers some browsers (namely IE) will cache the response, subsequent requests will not necessarily come to the server. You also need to AllowResponseInBrowser if you want this to work over HTTPS (due to yet another bug in IE).

To send content of an XmlDocument simply use:

dom.Save(Response.OutputStream);

dom.Save(Response.Output);

Just be sure the encodings match, (another good reason to use UTF-8).

The XmlDocument object will automatically adjust its embedded encoding="..." encoding to that of the Response (e.g. UTF-8)

Response.End()

If you really have to in an ASPX but its a bit drastic, in an ASHX don't do it.

How do I control how Emacs makes backup files?

The accepted answer is good, but it can be greatly improved by additionally backing up on every save and backing up versioned files.

First, basic settings as described in the accepted answer:

(setq version-control t ;; Use version numbers for backups.
      kept-new-versions 10 ;; Number of newest versions to keep.
      kept-old-versions 0 ;; Number of oldest versions to keep.
      delete-old-versions t ;; Don't ask to delete excess backup versions.
      backup-by-copying t)  ;; Copy all files, don't rename them.

Next, also backup versioned files, which Emacs does not do by default (you don't commit on every save, right?):

(setq vc-make-backup-files t)

Finally, make a backup on each save, not just the first. We make two kinds of backups:

  1. per-session backups: once on the first save of the buffer in each Emacs session. These simulate Emac's default backup behavior.

  2. per-save backups: once on every save. Emacs does not do this by default, but it's very useful if you leave Emacs running for a long time.

The backups go in different places and Emacs creates the backup dirs automatically if they don't exist:

;; Default and per-save backups go here:
(setq backup-directory-alist '(("" . "~/.emacs.d/backup/per-save")))

(defun force-backup-of-buffer ()
  ;; Make a special "per session" backup at the first save of each
  ;; emacs session.
  (when (not buffer-backed-up)
    ;; Override the default parameters for per-session backups.
    (let ((backup-directory-alist '(("" . "~/.emacs.d/backup/per-session")))
          (kept-new-versions 3))
      (backup-buffer)))
  ;; Make a "per save" backup on each save. The first save results in
  ;; both a per-session and a per-save backup, to keep the numbering
  ;; of per-save backups consistent.
  (let ((buffer-backed-up nil))
    (backup-buffer)))

(add-hook 'before-save-hook  'force-backup-of-buffer)

I became very interested in this topic after I wrote $< instead of $@ in my Makefile, about three hours after my previous commit :P

The above is based on an Emacs Wiki page I heavily edited.

Converting an OpenCV Image to Black and White

Simply you can write the following code snippet to convert an OpenCV image into a grey scale image

import cv2
image = cv2.imread('image.jpg',0)
cv2.imshow('grey scale image',image)

Observe that the image.jpg and the code must be saved in same folder.

Note that:

  • ('image.jpg') gives a RGB image
  • ('image.jpg',0) gives Grey Scale Image.

Pull all images from a specified directory and then display them

In case anyone is looking for recursive.

<?php

function scanDirectoryImages($directory, array $exts = array('jpeg', 'jpg', 'gif', 'png'))
{
    if (substr($directory, -1) == '/') {

Resetting a form in Angular 2 after submit

I don't know if I'm on the right path, but I got it working on ng 2.4.8 with the following form/submit tags:

<form #heroForm="ngForm" (ngSubmit)="add(newHero); heroForm.reset()">
<!-- place your input stuff here -->
<button type="submit" class="btn btn-default" [disabled]="!heroForm.valid">Add hero</button>

Seems to do the trick and sets the form's fields to "pristine" again.

Oracle: SQL select date with timestamp

You can specify the whole day by doing a range, like so:

WHERE bk_date >= TO_DATE('2012-03-18', 'YYYY-MM-DD')
AND bk_date <  TO_DATE('2012-03-19', 'YYYY-MM-DD')

More simply you can use TRUNC:

WHERE TRUNC(bk_date) = TO_DATE('2012-03-18', 'YYYY-MM-DD')

TRUNC without parameter removes hours, minutes and seconds from a DATE.

What does double question mark (??) operator mean in PHP

$myVar = $someVar ?? 42;

Is equivalent to :

$myVar = isset($someVar) ? $someVar : 42;

For constants, the behaviour is the same when using a constant that already exists :

define("FOO", "bar");
define("BAR", null);

$MyVar = FOO ?? "42";
$MyVar2 = BAR ?? "42";

echo $MyVar . PHP_EOL;  // bar
echo $MyVar2 . PHP_EOL; // 42

However, for constants that don't exist, this is different :

$MyVar3 = IDONTEXIST ?? "42"; // Raises a warning
echo $MyVar3 . PHP_EOL;       // IDONTEXIST

Warning: Use of undefined constant IDONTEXIST - assumed 'IDONTEXIST' (this will throw an Error in a future version of PHP)

Php will convert the non-existing constant to a string.

You can use constant("ConstantName") that returns the value of the constant or null if the constant doesn't exist, but it will still raise a warning. You can prepended the function with the error control operator @ to ignore the warning message :

$myVar = @constant("IDONTEXIST") ?? "42"; // No warning displayed anymore
echo $myVar . PHP_EOL; // 42

git ignore exception

Just add ! before an exclusion rule.

According to the gitignore man page:

Patterns have the following format:

...

  • An optional prefix ! which negates the pattern; any matching file excluded by a previous pattern will become included again. If a negated pattern matches, this will override lower precedence patterns sources.

How do I import a CSV file in R?

You would use the read.csv function; for example:

dat = read.csv("spam.csv", header = TRUE)

You can also reference this tutorial for more details.

Note: make sure the .csv file to read is in your working directory (using getwd()) or specify the right path to file. If you want, you can set the current directory using setwd.

Python Socket Receive Large Amount of Data

        part = sock.recv(BUFF_SIZE)
        data += part
        if len(part) < BUFF_SIZE:
            # either 0 or end of data
            break
    return data

Html.RenderPartial() syntax with Razor

  • RenderPartial() is a void method that writes to the response stream. A void method, in C#, needs a ; and hence must be enclosed by { }.

  • Partial() is a method that returns an MvcHtmlString. In Razor, You can call a property or a method that returns such a string with just a @ prefix to distinguish it from plain HTML you have on the page.

How does Java resolve a relative path in new File()?

The working directory is a common concept across virtually all operating systems and program languages etc. It's the directory in which your program is running. This is usually (but not always, there are ways to change it) the directory the application is in.

Relative paths are ones that start without a drive specifier. So in linux they don't start with a /, in windows they don't start with a C:\, etc. These always start from your working directory.

Absolute paths are the ones that start with a drive (or machine for network paths) specifier. They always go from the start of that drive.

How to use a TRIM function in SQL Server

You are missing two closing parentheses...and I am not sure an ampersand works as a string concatenation operator. Try '+'

SELECT dbo.COL_V_Cost_GEMS_Detail.TNG_SYS_NR AS [EHP Code],
dbo.COL_TBL_VCOURSE.TNG_NA AS [Course Title],
LTRIM(RTRIM(FCT_TYP_CD)) + ') AND (' + LTRIM(RTRIM(DEP_TYP_ID)) + ')' AS [Course Owner]

Powershell script to see currently logged in users (domain and machine) + status (active, idle, away)

In search of this same solution, I found what I needed under a different question in stackoverflow: Powershell-log-off-remote-session. The below one line will return a list of logged on users.

query user /server:$SERVER

Add x and y labels to a pandas plot

The df.plot() function returns a matplotlib.axes.AxesSubplot object. You can set the labels on that object.

ax = df2.plot(lw=2, colormap='jet', marker='.', markersize=10, title='Video streaming dropout by category')
ax.set_xlabel("x label")
ax.set_ylabel("y label")

enter image description here

Or, more succinctly: ax.set(xlabel="x label", ylabel="y label").

Alternatively, the index x-axis label is automatically set to the Index name, if it has one. so df2.index.name = 'x label' would work too.

Sharing link on WhatsApp from mobile website (not application) for Android

I'm afraid that WhatsApp for Android does not currently support to be called from a web browser.

I had the same requirement for my current project, and since I couldn't find any proper information I ended up downloading the APK file.

In Android, if an application wants to be called from a web browser, it needs to define an Activity with the category android.intent.category.BROWSABLE.

You can find more information about this here: https://developers.google.com/chrome/mobile/docs/intents

If you take a look to the WhatsApp AndroidManifest.xml file, the only Activiy with category BROWSABLE is this one:

<activity android:name="com.whatsapp.Conversation"   android:configChanges="keyboard|keyboardHidden|orientation|screenLayout|uiMode|screenSize|smallestScreenSize" android:windowSoftInputMode="stateUnchanged">
        <intent-filter>
            <action android:name="android.intent.action.SENDTO" />
            <category android:name="android.intent.category.DEFAULT" />
            <category android:name="android.intent.category.BROWSABLE" />
            <data android:scheme="sms" />
            <data android:scheme="smsto" />
        </intent-filter>
    </activity>

I've been playing with it for a while, and I couldn't make it to work. The most I got was to open the WhatsApp application from Chrome, but I couldn't figure out a way to set the message content and recipient.

Since it is not documented by the WhatsApp team, I think this is still work in progress. It looks like in the future WhatsApp will handle SMS too.

The only way to get more information is by reaching the WhatsApp dev team, what I tried, but I'm still waiting for a response.

Regards!

In Java, can you modify a List while iterating through it?

There is nothing wrong with the idea of modifying an element inside a list while traversing it (don't modify the list itself, that's not recommended), but it can be better expressed like this:

for (int i = 0; i < letters.size(); i++) {
    letters.set(i, "D");
}

At the end the whole list will have the letter "D" as its content. It's not a good idea to use an enhanced for loop in this case, you're not using the iteration variable for anything, and besides you can't modify the list's contents using the iteration variable.

Notice that the above snippet is not modifying the list's structure - meaning: no elements are added or removed and the lists' size remains constant. Simply replacing one element by another doesn't count as a structural modification. Here's the link to the documentation quoted by @ZouZou in the comments, it states that:

A structural modification is any operation that adds or deletes one or more elements, or explicitly resizes the backing array; merely setting the value of an element is not a structural modification

How do you uninstall all dependencies listed in package.json (NPM)?

// forcibly remove and reinstall all package dependencies
ren package.json package.json-bak
echo {} > package.json
npm prune
del package.json
ren package.json-bak package.json
npm i

This essentially creates a fake, empty package.json, calls npm prune to remove everything in node_modules, restores the original package.json and re-installs everything.

Some of the other solutions might be more elegant, but I suspect this is faster and exhaustive. On other threads I've seen people suggest just deleting the node_modules directory, but at least for windows, this causes npm to choke afterward because the bin directory goes missing. Maybe on linux it gets restored properly, but not windows.

How to return temporary table from stored procedure

What version of SQL Server are you using? In SQL Server 2008 you can use Table Parameters and Table Types.

An alternative approach is to return a table variable from a user defined function but I am not a big fan of this method.

You can find an example here

Detect click outside React component

I found this from the article below:

render() { return ( { this.node = node; }} > Toggle Popover {this.state.popupVisible && ( I'm a popover! )} ); } }

Is it possible to have placeholders in strings.xml for runtime values?

A Direct Kotlin Solution to the problem:

strings.xml

<string name="customer_message">Hello, %1$s!\nYou have %2$d Products in your cart.</string>

val username = "Andrew"
val products = 1000
val text: String = String.format(

Ascending and Descending Number Order in java

Just sort the array in ascending order and print it backwards.

Arrays.sort(arr);
for(int i = arr.length-1; i >= 0 ; i--) {
    //print arr[i]
}

Using Thymeleaf when the value is null

Sure there is. You can for example use the conditional expressions. For example:

<span th:text="${someObject.someProperty != null} ? ${someObject.someProperty} : 'null value!'">someValue</span>

You can even omit the "else" expression:

<span th:text="${someObject.someProperty != null} ? ${someObject.someProperty}">someValue</span>

You can also take a look at the Elvis operator to display default values.

Python Selenium Chrome Webdriver

Here's a simpler solution: install python-chromedrive package, import it in your script, and it's done.

Step by step:
1. pip install chromedriver-binary
2. import the package

from selenium import webdriver
import chromedriver_binary # Adds chromedriver binary to path

driver = webdriver.Chrome()
driver.get("http://www.python.org")

Create excel ranges using column numbers in vba?

Below are two solutions to select the range A1.

Cells(1,1).Select '(row 1, column 1)
Range("A1").Select

Also check out this link;

We strongly recommend that you use Range instead of Cells to work with cells and groups of cells. It makes your sentences much clearer and you are not forced to remember that column AE is column 31.

The only time that you will use Cells is when you want to select all the cells of a worksheet. For example: Cells.Select To select all cells and then empty all cells of values or formulas you will use: Cells.ClearContents

--

"Cells" is particularly useful when setting ranges dynamically and looping through ranges by using counters. Defining ranges using letters as column numbers may be more transparent on the short run, but it will also make your application more rigid since they are "hard coded" representations - not dynamic.

import helper
helper.display()

The output,

I'm working sundar gsv

NOTE: No need to specify the .py extension.

How do I use Apache tomcat 7 built in Host Manager gui?

I'm not sure about Tomcat 7, but with Tomcat 6... once you start Tomcat: By going into the bin directory and starting startup.bat (win) or startup.sh (Unix/osx) it will spin up a local instance of the server running usually on port 8080 by default. Then by going to http://localhost:8080/ and seeing that it is running, there is a link to the manager. If that page is not there, you can try loading the manager by going directly to manager/html, and that will load the Host Manager gui.

http://localhost:8080/manager/html

Make sure Tomcat is running first and that 8080 is the right port. These are just the defaults that tomcat usually runs with.

To login you need to edit the conf/tomcat-users.xml, and create a Manager GUI role

<role rolename="manager-gui"/>

and add that to a user

<user username="admin" password="password" roles="manager-gui"/>

Then when you go to Manager GUI app at http://localhost:8080/manager/html it will prompt you for a username/password, which you added to that config file.

What is the most appropriate way to store user settings in Android application

I use the Android KeyStore to encrypt the password using RSA in ECB mode and then save it in the SharedPreferences.

When I want the password back I read the encrypted one from the SharedPreferences and decrypt it using the KeyStore.

With this method you generate a public/private Key-pair where the private one is safely stored and managed by Android.

Enums in Javascript with ES6

Is there a problem with this formulation?

I don't see any.

Is there a better way?

I'd collapse the two statements into one:

const Colors = Object.freeze({
    RED:   Symbol("red"),
    BLUE:  Symbol("blue"),
    GREEN: Symbol("green")
});

If you don't like the boilerplate, like the repeated Symbol calls, you can of course also write a helper function makeEnum that creates the same thing from a list of names.

Python: How to keep repeating a program until a specific input is obtained?

This is a small program that will keep asking an input until required input is given.

we should keep the required number as a string, otherwise it may not work. input is taken as string by default

required_number = '18'

while True:
    number = input("Enter the number\n")
    if number == required_number:
        print ("GOT IT")
        break
    else:
        print ("Wrong number try again")

or you can use eval(input()) method

required_number = 18

while True:
    number = eval(input("Enter the number\n"))
    if number == required_number:
        print ("GOT IT")
        break
    else:
        print ("Wrong number try again")

How to use PHP OPCache?

Installation

OpCache is compiled by default on PHP5.5+. However it is disabled by default. In order to start using OpCache in PHP5.5+ you will first have to enable it. To do this you would have to do the following.

Add the following line to your php.ini:

zend_extension=/full/path/to/opcache.so (nix)
zend_extension=C:\path\to\php_opcache.dll (win)

Note that when the path contains spaces you should wrap it in quotes:

zend_extension="C:\Program Files\PHP5.5\ext\php_opcache.dll"

Also note that you will have to use the zend_extension directive instead of the "normal" extension directive because it affects the actual Zend engine (i.e. the thing that runs PHP).

Usage

Currently there are four functions which you can use:

opcache_get_configuration():

Returns an array containing the currently used configuration OpCache uses. This includes all ini settings as well as version information and blacklisted files.

var_dump(opcache_get_configuration());

opcache_get_status():

This will return an array with information about the current status of the cache. This information will include things like: the state the cache is in (enabled, restarting, full etc), the memory usage, hits, misses and some more useful information. It will also contain the cached scripts.

var_dump(opcache_get_status());

opcache_reset():

Resets the entire cache. Meaning all possible cached scripts will be parsed again on the next visit.

opcache_reset();

opcache_invalidate():

Invalidates a specific cached script. Meaning the script will be parsed again on the next visit.

opcache_invalidate('/path/to/script/to/invalidate.php', true);

Maintenance and reports

There are some GUI's created to help maintain OpCache and generate useful reports. These tools leverage the above functions.

Format Instant to String

The Instant class doesn't contain Zone information, it only stores timestamp in milliseconds from UNIX epoch, i.e. 1 Jan 1070 from UTC. So, formatter can't print a date because date always printed for concrete time zone. You should set time zone to formatter and all will be fine, like this :

Instant instant = Instant.ofEpochMilli(92554380000L);
DateTimeFormatter formatter = DateTimeFormatter.ofLocalizedDateTime(FormatStyle.SHORT).withLocale(Locale.UK).withZone(ZoneOffset.UTC);
assert formatter.format(instant).equals("07/12/72 05:33");
assert instant.toString().equals("1972-12-07T05:33:00Z");

If this looks too idiomatic, you can also test len(myDictionary) for zero, or set(myDictionary.keys()) for an empty set, or simply test for equality with {}.

The isEmpty function is not only unnecessary but also your implementation has multiple issues that I can spot prima-facie.

  1. The return False statement is indented one level too deep. It should be outside the for loop and at the same level as the for statement. As a result, your code will process only one, arbitrarily selected key, if a key exists. If a key does not exist, the function will return None, which will be cast to boolean False. Ouch! All the empty dictionaries will be classified as false-nagatives.
  2. If the dictionary is not empty, then the code will process only one key and return its value cast to boolean. You cannot even assume that the same key is evaluated each time you call it. So there will be false positives.
  3. Let us say you correct the indentation of the return False statement and bring it outside the for loop. Then what you get is the boolean OR of all the keys, or False if the dictionary empty. Still you will have false positives and false negatives. Do the correction and test against the following dictionary for an evidence.

myDictionary={0:'zero', '':'Empty string', None:'None value', False:'Boolean False value', ():'Empty tuple'}

PANIC: Cannot find AVD system path. Please define ANDROID_SDK_ROOT (in windows 10)

I had the same problem when I was trying to move the android studio to another Drive as it was taking a lot of space in my C(Windows drive) Drive, Here's what fixed my problem:-

  1. Copy the C:\Users\ #YourUserName\ .android folder to another drive,
  2. Go to start environment variable make a new variable named ANDROID_SDK_HOME and add the path of the new location like mine is F:\Android AVD( don't add .android to it )
  3. Then add ANDROID_SDK_HOME to the existing Path variable.
  4. Open android studio, go to configure --> AVD manager and you'll see that you've successfully moved to a new location.

What are the differences in die() and exit() in PHP?

There's no difference - they are the same.

PHP Manual for exit:

Note: This language construct is equivalent to die().

adding a datatable in a dataset

you have to set the tableName you want to your dtimage that is for instance

dtImage.TableName="mydtimage";

if(!ds.Tables.Contains(dtImage.TableName))
        ds.Tables.Add(dtImage);

it will be reflected in dataset because dataset is a container of your datatable dtimage and you have a reference on your dtimage

Python, creating objects

Create a class and give it an __init__ method:

class Student:
    def __init__(self, name, age, major):
        self.name = name
        self.age = age
        self.major = major

    def is_old(self):
        return self.age > 100

Now, you can initialize an instance of the Student class:

>>> s = Student('John', 88, None)
>>> s.name
    'John'
>>> s.age
    88

Although I'm not sure why you need a make_student student function if it does the same thing as Student.__init__.

Is there any way to install Composer globally on Windows?

Go to php.exe located folder.

C:\wamp\bin\php\php5.5.12\

open cmd there, and execute below command.

php -r "readfile('https://getcomposer.org/installer');" | php

composer.phar will be downloaded in same folder.

Create folder named composer in C:// drive (or anywhere you wish, for upcoming steps, remember the path).

move composer.phar file to C://composer folder.

Create composer.bat file in same folder with contents below

@ECHO OFF
php "%~dp0composer.phar" %*

create file named composer without any extensions.

running command type NUL > composer in CMD will help to get it done quickly,

Open that file and place below contents inside it.

#!/bin/sh
dir=$(d=$(dirname "$0"); cd "$d" && pwd)
# see if we are running in cygwin by checking for cygpath program
if command -v 'cygpath' >/dev/null 2>&1; then
    # cygwin paths start with /cygdrive/ which will break windows PHP,
    # so we need to translate the dir path to windows format. However
    # we could be using cygwin PHP which does not require this, so we
    # test if the path to PHP starts with /cygdrive/ rather than /usr/bin.
    if [[ $(which php) == /cygdrive/* ]]; then
        dir=$(cygpath -m $dir);
    fi
fi
dir=$(echo $dir | sed 's/ /\ /g')
php "${dir}/composer.phar" $*

Save.

Now set path, So we can access composer from cmd.

  • Show Desktop.

  • Right Click My Computer shortcut in the desktop.

  • Click Properties.

  • You should see a section of control Panel - Control Panel\System and Security\System.

  • Click Advanced System Settings on the Left menu.

  • Click Environment Variables towards the bottom of the window.

  • Select PATH in the user variables list.

  • Append your PHP Path (C:\composer) to your PATH variable, separated from the already existing string by a semi colon.

  • Click OK

Restart your machine.

Or, restart explorer only using below command in CMD.

taskkill /f /IM explorer.exe
start explorer.exe
exit

Cannot Resolve Collation Conflict

The thing about collations is that although the database has its own collation, every table, and every column can have its own collation. If not specified it takes the default of its parent object, but can be different.

When you change collation of the database, it will be the new default for all new tables and columns, but it doesn't change the collation of existing objects inside the database. You have to go and change manually the collation of every table and column.

Luckily there are scripts available on the internet that can do the job. I am not going to recommend any as I haven't tried them but here are few links:

http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/302405/The-Easy-way-of-changing-Collation-of-all-Database

Update Collation of all fields in database on the fly

http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic820675-146-1.aspx

If you need to have different collation on two objects or can't change collations - you can still JOIN between them using COLLATE command, and choosing the collation you want for join.

SELECT * FROM A JOIN B ON A.Text = B.Text COLLATE Latin1_General_CI_AS

or using default database collation:

SELECT * FROM A JOIN B ON A.Text = B.Text COLLATE DATABASE_DEFAULT

right align an image using CSS HTML

My workaround for this issue was to set display: inline to the image element. With this, your image and text will be aligned to the right if you set text-align: right from a parent container.

python NameError: global name '__file__' is not defined

change your codes as follows! it works for me. `

os.path.dirname(os.path.abspath("__file__"))

IntelliJ does not show 'Class' when we right click and select 'New'

Another possible solution is that the project name is not acceptable. For example, creating a project with spaces in the name does not block the project creation but the proper sources are not marked and when those are marked manually, I still was unable to create classes. Recreating the project with hyphens (-) instead of spaces corrected the problem for me.

Dynamically allocating an array of objects

The constructor of your A object allocates another object dynamically and stores a pointer to that dynamically allocated object in a raw pointer.

For that scenario, you must define your own copy constructor , assignment operator and destructor. The compiler generated ones will not work correctly. (This is a corollary to the "Law of the Big Three": A class with any of destructor, assignment operator, copy constructor generally needs all 3).

You have defined your own destructor (and you mentioned creating a copy constructor), but you need to define both of the other 2 of the big three.

An alternative is to store the pointer to your dynamically allocated int[] in some other object that will take care of these things for you. Something like a vector<int> (as you mentioned) or a boost::shared_array<>.

To boil this down - to take advantage of RAII to the full extent, you should avoid dealing with raw pointers to the extent possible.

And since you asked for other style critiques, a minor one is that when you are deleting raw pointers you do not need to check for 0 before calling delete - delete handles that case by doing nothing so you don't have to clutter you code with the checks.

Check if file is already open

Hi I really hope this helps.

I tried all the options before and none really work on Windows. The only think that helped me accomplish this was trying to move the file. Event to the same place under an ATOMIC_MOVE. If the file is being written by another program or Java thread, this definitely will produce an Exception.

 try{

      Files.move(Paths.get(currentFile.getPath()),
               Paths.get(currentFile.getPath()), StandardCopyOption.ATOMIC_MOVE);

      // DO YOUR STUFF HERE SINCE IT IS NOT BEING WRITTEN BY ANOTHER PROGRAM

 } catch (Exception e){

      // DO NOT WRITE THEN SINCE THE FILE IS BEING WRITTEN BY ANOTHER PROGRAM

 }

How do I empty an array in JavaScript?

Use a modified version of Jan's initial suggestion:

var originalLength = A.length;
for (var i = originalLength; i > 0; i--) {
     A.pop();
}

Terser:

for (let i = A.length; i > 0;A.pop(),i--) {}

Or here's another take:

while(!A[Symbol.iterator]().next().done)A.shift()

Python str vs unicode types

When you define a as unicode, the chars a and á are equal. Otherwise á counts as two chars. Try len(a) and len(au). In addition to that, you may need to have the encoding when you work with other environments. For example if you use md5, you get different values for a and ua

How to get a variable value if variable name is stored as string?

In bash 4.3, the '-v' test for set variables was introduced. At the same time, 'nameref' declaration was added. These two features together with the indirection operator (!) enable a simplified version of the previous example:

get_value()
{
  declare -n var_name=$1
  if [[ -v var_name ]]
  then
    echo "${var_name}"
  else
    echo "variable with name <${!var_name}> is not set"
  fi
}

test=123
get_value test
123

test="\$(echo \"something nasty\")"
get_value test
$(echo "something nasty")

unset test
get_value test
variable with name <test> is not set

As this approach eliminates the need for 'eval', it is safer. This code checked under bash 5.0.3(1).

Use dynamic (variable) string as regex pattern in JavaScript

If you are trying to use a variable value in the expression, you must use the RegExp "constructor".

var regex="(?!(?:[^<]+>|[^>]+<\/a>))\b(" + value + ")\b";
new RegExp(regex, "is")

Logging best practices

I'm not qualified to comment on logging for .Net, since my bread and butter is Java, but we've had a migration in our logging over the last 8 years you may find a useful analogy to your question.

We started with a Singleton logger that was used by every thread within the JVM, and set the logging level for the entire process. This resulted in huge logs if we had to debug even a very specific part of the system, so lesson number one is to segment your logging.

Our current incarnation of the logger allows multiple instances with one defined as the default. We can instantiate any number of child loggers that have different logging levels, but the most useful facet of this architecture is the ability to create loggers for individual packages and classes by simply changing the logging properties. Lesson number two is to create a flexible system that allows overriding its behavior without changing code.

We are using the Apache commons-logging library wrapped around Log4J.

Hope this helps!

* Edit *

After reading Jeffrey Hantin's post below, I realized that I should have noted what our internal logging wrapper has actually become. It's now essentially a factory and is strictly used to get a working logger using the correct properties file (which for legacy reasons hasn't been moved to the default position). Since you can specify the logging configuration file on command line now, I suspect it will become even leaner and if you're starting a new application, I'd definitely agree with his statement that you shouldn't even bother wrapping the logger.

echo "<br>".$date;

How to detect scroll position of page using jQuery

You can extract the scroll position using jQuery's .scrollTop() method

$(window).scroll(function (event) {

Unity 2d jumping script

The answer above is now obsolete with Unity 5 or newer. Use this instead!

GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>().AddForce(new Vector2(0,10), ForceMode2D.Impulse);

I also want to add that this leaves the jump height super private and only editable in the script, so this is what I did...

    public float playerSpeed; //allows us to be able to change speed in Unity
public Vector2 jumpHeight;

// Use this for initialization
void Start () {

}
// Update is called once per frame
void Update ()
{
    transform.Translate(playerSpeed * Time.deltaTime, 0f, 0f);  //makes player run

    if (Input.GetMouseButtonDown(0) || Input.GetKeyDown(KeyCode.Space))  //makes player jump
    {
        GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>().AddForce(jumpHeight, ForceMode2D.Impulse);

This makes it to where you can edit the jump height in Unity itself without having to go back to the script.

Side note - I wanted to comment on the answer above, but I can't because I'm new here. :)

Kotlin unresolved reference in IntelliJ

Your Intellij IDEA plugin and the Kotlin runtime/compiler that you use in the project need to match. For example if IDE plugin is Beta 1, but your Gradle/Maven project using M12, you'll have issues exactly as you described. So check that everything lines up.

If you still have issues, with some older plugins you need to clear the caches in Intellij IDEA (file menu, Clear Caches and Restart, select option to restart).

use a javascript array to fill up a drop down select box

Use a for loop to iterate through your array. For each string, create a new option element, assign the string as its innerHTML and value, and then append it to the select element.

var cuisines = ["Chinese","Indian"];
var sel = document.getElementById('CuisineList');
for(var i = 0; i < cuisines.length; i++) {
    var opt = document.createElement('option');
    opt.innerHTML = cuisines[i];
    opt.value = cuisines[i];
    sel.appendChild(opt);
}

UPDATE: Using createDocumentFragment and forEach

If you have a very large list of elements that you want to append to a document, it can be non-performant to append each new element individually. The DocumentFragment acts as a light weight document object that can be used to collect elements. Once all your elements are ready, you can execute a single appendChild operation so that the DOM only updates once, instead of n times.

var cuisines = ["Chinese","Indian"];

var sel = document.getElementById('CuisineList');
var fragment = document.createDocumentFragment();

cuisines.forEach(function(cuisine, index) {
    var opt = document.createElement('option');
    opt.innerHTML = cuisine;
    opt.value = cuisine;
    fragment.appendChild(opt);
});

sel.appendChild(fragment);

jQuery: Load Modal Dialog Contents via Ajax

var dialogName = '#dialog_XYZ';
$.ajax({
        url: "/ajax_pages/my_page.ext",
        data: {....},
        success: function(data) {
          $(dialogName ).remove();

          $('BODY').append(data);

          $(dialogName )
            .dialog(options.dialogOptions);
        }
});

The Ajax-Request load the Dialog, add them to the Body of the current page and open the Dialog.

If you only whant to load the content you can do:

var dialogName = '#dialog_XYZ';
$.ajax({
            url: "/ajax_pages/my_page.ext",
            data: {....},
            success: function(data) {
              $(dialogName).append(data);

              $(dialogName )
                .dialog(options.dialogOptions);
            }
});
