Programs & Examples On #Unhandled

UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning: This error originated either by throwing inside of an async function without a catch block

I resolve the problem. It's very simple . if do you checking care the problem may be because the auxiliar variable has whitespace. Why ? I don't know but yus must use the trim() method and will resolve the problem

React-Redux: Actions must be plain objects. Use custom middleware for async actions

The error is simply asking you to insert a Middleware in between which would help to handle async operations.

You could do that by :

npm i redux-thunk

        Inside index.js

import thunk from "redux-thunk"

...createStore(rootReducers, applyMiddleware(thunk));

Now, async operations will work inside your functions.

Angular 2 ngfor first, last, index loop

Check out this plunkr.

When you're binding to variables, you need to use the brackets. Also, you use the hashtag when you want to get references to elements in your html, not for declaring variables inside of templates like that.

<md-button-toggle *ngFor="let indicador of indicadores; let first = first;" [value]="indicador.id" [checked]="first">
...

Edit: Thanks to Christopher Moore: Angular exposes the following local variables:

  • index
  • first
  • last
  • even
  • odd

Error: the entity type requires a primary key

I found a bit different cause of the error. It seems like SQLite wants to use correct primary key class property name. So...

Wrong PK name

public class Client
{
  public int SomeFieldName { get; set; } // It is the ID
  ...
}

Correct PK name

public class Client
{
  public int Id { get; set; } // It is the ID
  ...
}

public class Client
{
  public int ClientId { get; set; } // It is the ID
  ...
}

It still posible to use wrong PK name but we have to use [Key] attribute like

public class Client
{
   [Key]
   public int SomeFieldName { get; set; } // It is the ID
   ...
}

Angular 1.6.0: "Possibly unhandled rejection" error

Please check the answer here:

Possibly unhandled rejection in Angular 1.6

This has been fixed with 316f60f and the fix is included in the v1.6.1 release.

What is an unhandled promise rejection?

Try not closing the connection before you send data to your database. Remove client.close(); from your code and it'll work fine.

Getting a UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning when testing using mocha/chai

For those who are looking for the error/warning UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning outside of a testing environment, It could be probably because nobody in the code is taking care of the eventual error in a promise:

For instance, this code will show the warning reported in this question:

new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
  return reject('Error reason!');
});

(node:XXXX) UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning: Unhandled promise rejection (rejection id: 1): Error: Error reason!

and adding the .catch() or handling the error should solve the warning/error

new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
  return reject('Error reason!');
}).catch(() => { /* do whatever you want here */ });

Or using the second parameter in the then function

new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
  return reject('Error reason!');
}).then(null, () => { /* do whatever you want here */ });

TypeScript-'s Angular Framework Error - "There is no directive with exportAs set to ngForm"

How to import component into another root component in Angular 2

You should declare it with declarations array(meta property) of @NgModule as shown below (RC5 and later),

import {CoursesComponent} from './courses.component';

@NgModule({
  imports:      [ BrowserModule],
  declarations: [ AppComponent,CoursesComponent],  //<----here
  providers:    [],
  bootstrap:    [ AppComponent ]
})

The pipe ' ' could not be found angular2 custom pipe

For Ionic you can face multiple issues as @Karl mentioned. The solution which works flawlessly for ionic lazy loaded pages is:

  1. Create pipes directory with following files: pipes.ts and pipes.module.ts

// pipes.ts content (it can have multiple pipes inside, just remember to

use @Pipe function before each class)
import { PipeTransform, Pipe } from "@angular/core";
@Pipe({ name: "toArray" })
export class toArrayPipe implements PipeTransform {
  transform(value, args: string[]): any {
    if (!value) return value;
    let keys = [];
    for (let key in value) {
      keys.push({ key: key, value: value[key] });
    }
    return keys;
  }
}

// pipes.module.ts content

import { NgModule } from "@angular/core";
import { IonicModule } from "ionic-angular";
import { toArrayPipe } from "./pipes";

@NgModule({
  declarations: [toArrayPipe],
  imports: [IonicModule],
  exports: [toArrayPipe]
})
export class PipesModule {}
  1. Include PipesModule into app.module and @NgModule imports section

    import { PipesModule } from "../pipes/pipes.module"; @NgModule({ imports: [ PipesModule ] });

  2. Include PipesModule in each of your .module.ts where you want to use custom pipes. Don't forget to add it into imports section. // Example. file: pages/my-custom-page/my-custom-page.module.ts

    import { PipesModule } from "../../pipes/pipes.module"; @NgModule({ imports: [ PipesModule ] })

  3. Thats it. Now you can use your custom pipe in your template. Ex.

<div *ngFor="let prop of myObject | toArray">{{ prop.key }}</div>

Angular2 RC5: Can't bind to 'Property X' since it isn't a known property of 'Child Component'

If you use the Angular CLI to create your components, let's say CarComponent, it attaches app to the selector name (i.e app-car) and this throws the above error when you reference the component in the parent view. Therefore you either have to change the selector name in the parent view to let's say <app-car></app-car> or change the selector in the CarComponent to selector: 'car'

Can't bind to 'ngModel' since it isn't a known property of 'input'

This is for the folks who use plain JavaScript instead of Type Script. In addition to referencing the forms script file on top of the page like below:

<script src="node_modules/@angular/forms/bundles/forms.umd.js"></script>

You should also tell the the module loader to load the ng.forms.FormsModule. After making the changes my imports property of NgModule method looked like below:

imports: [ng.platformBrowser.BrowserModule, ng.forms.FormsModule],

Cancel a vanilla ECMAScript 6 Promise chain

const makeCancelable = promise => {
    let rejectFn;

    const wrappedPromise = new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
        rejectFn = reject;

        Promise.resolve(promise)

    };

    return wrappedPromise;
};

Usage:

const cancelablePromise = makeCancelable(myPromise);

How do I debug "Error: spawn ENOENT" on node.js?

Before anyone spends to much time debugging this problem, most of the time it can be resolved by deleting node_modules and reinstalling the packages.

To Install:

If a lockfile exists you might use

yarn install --frozen-lockfile

or

npm ci

respectivly. if not then

yarn install

or

npm i

KERNELBASE.dll Exception 0xe0434352 offset 0x000000000000a49d

0xe0434352 is the SEH code for a CLR exception. If you don't understand what that means, stop and read A Crash Course on the Depths of Win32™ Structured Exception Handling. So your process is not handling a CLR exception. Don't shoot the messenger, KERNELBASE.DLL is just the unfortunate victim. The perpetrator is MyApp.exe.

There should be a minidump of the crash in DrWatson folders with a full stack, it will contain everything you need to root cause the issue.

I suggest you wire up, in your myapp.exe code, AppDomain.UnhandledException and Application.ThreadException, as appropriate.

Node.js – events js 72 throw er unhandled 'error' event

I always do the following whenever I get such error:

// remove node_modules/
rm -rf node_modules/

npm start //or, yarn start

It works fine after re-installing node_modules. But I don't know if it's good practice.

How to resolve this System.IO.FileNotFoundException

I came across a similar situation after publishing a ClickOnce application, and one of my colleagues on a different domain reported that it fails to launch.

To find out what was going on, I added a try catch statement inside the MainWindow method as @BradleyDotNET mentioned in one comment on the original post, and then published again.

public MainWindow()
{
    try
    {
        InitializeComponent();
    }
    catch (Exception exc)
    {
        MessageBox.Show(exc.ToString());
    }
}

Then my colleague reported to me the exception detail, and it was a missing reference of a third party framework dll file.

Added the reference and problem solved.

Could not load file or assembly 'Newtonsoft.Json' or one of its dependencies. Manifest definition does not match the assembly reference

In my case, at the message of error was "version 6.0.0", but this version is not available to install, so i installed the "6.0.1 version" at my project and solved my problem.

System.Windows.Markup.XamlParseException' occurred in PresentationFramework.dll?

In my case this error appeared when I asigned to both dynamic created controls (combobox), same created control from other class.

//dynamic created controls
ComboBox combobox1 = ManagerControls.myCombobox1;
...some events

ComboBox combobox2 = ManagerControl.myComboBox2;
...some events

.

//method in constructor
public static void InitializeDynamicControls()
{
     ComboBox cb = new ComboBox();
     cb.Background = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.Blue);
     ...
     cb.Width = 100;
     cb.Text = "Select window";

     ManagerControls.myCombobox1 = cb;
     ManagerControls.myComboBox2 = cb; // <-- error here
}

Solution: create another ComboBox cb2 and assign it to ManagerControls.myComboBox2.

Setting the HttpWebRequest.KeepAlive to false didn't work for me.

Since I was accessing a HTTPS page I had to set the Service Point Security Protocol to Tls12.

ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol = SecurityProtocolType.Tls12;

Notice that there are other SecurityProtocolTypes: SecurityProtocolType.Ssl3, SecurityProtocolType.Tls, SecurityProtocolType.Tls11

So if the Tls12 doesn't work for you, try the three remaining options.

Also notice that you can set multiple protocols. This is preferable on most cases.

ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol = SecurityProtocolType.Tls12 | SecurityProtocolType.Tls11 | SecurityProtocolType.Tls;

Edit: Since this is a choice of security standards it's obviously best to go with the latest (TLS 1.2 as of writing this), and not just doing what works. In fact, SSL3 has been officially prohibited from use since 2015 and TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 will likely be prohibited soon as well. source: @aske-b

The network path was not found

There may be some reasons like:

  1. Wrong SQL connection string.
  2. SQL Server in services is not running.
  3. Distributed Transaction Coordinator service is not running.

First try to connect from SQL Server Management Studio to your Remote database. If it connects it means problem is at the code side or at Visual Studio side if you are using the one.

Check the connectionstring, if the problem persists, check these two services:

  1. Distributed Transaction Coordinator service
  2. SQL Server services.

Go in services.msc and search and start these two services.

The above answer works for the Exception: [Win32Exception (0x80004005): The network path was not found]

How to add plus one (+1) to a SQL Server column in a SQL Query

You need both a value and a field to assign it to. The value is TableField + 1, so the assignment is:

SET TableField = TableField + 1

Exit single-user mode

Use this Script

exec sp_who

Find the dbname and spid column

now execute

kill spid
go

SET MULTI_USER;

I just restarted Visual Studio and did IISRESET which solved the problem.

I got this issue resolved by removing non-desirable characters from the password for the connection. For example, I had these characters: <##% and it caused the problem (most probably hash tag was the root cause of the problem).

Catching exceptions from Guzzle

To catch Guzzle errors you can do something like this:

try {
    $response = $client->get('/not_found.xml')->send();
} catch (Guzzle\Http\Exception\BadResponseException $e) {
    echo 'Uh oh! ' . $e->getMessage();
}

... but, to be able to "log" or "resend" your request try something like this:

// Add custom error handling to any request created by this client
$client->getEventDispatcher()->addListener(
    'request.error',
    function(Event $event) {

        //write log here ...

        if ($event['response']->getStatusCode() == 401) {

            // create new token and resend your request...
            $newRequest = $event['request']->clone();
            $newRequest->setHeader('X-Auth-Header', MyApplication::getNewAuthToken());
            $newResponse = $newRequest->send();

            // Set the response object of the request without firing more events
            $event['response'] = $newResponse;

            // You can also change the response and fire the normal chain of
            // events by calling $event['request']->setResponse($newResponse);

            // Stop other events from firing when you override 401 responses
            $event->stopPropagation();
        }

});

... or if you want to "stop event propagation" you can overridde event listener (with a higher priority than -255) and simply stop event propagation.

$client->getEventDispatcher()->addListener('request.error', function(Event $event) {
if ($event['response']->getStatusCode() != 200) {
        // Stop other events from firing when you get stytus-code != 200
        $event->stopPropagation();
    }
});

thats a good idea to prevent guzzle errors like:

request.CRITICAL: Uncaught PHP Exception Guzzle\Http\Exception\ClientErrorResponseException: "Client error response

in your application.

How do I debug error ECONNRESET in Node.js?

Another possible case (but rare) could be if you have server to server communications and have set server.maxConnections to a very low value.

In node's core lib net.js it will call clientHandle.close() which will also cause error ECONNRESET:

if (self.maxConnections && self._connections >= self.maxConnections) {

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server

Sql Server fire this error when your application don't have enough rights to access the database. there are several reason about this error . To fix this error you should follow the following instruction.

  1. Try to connect sql server from your server using management studio . if you use windows authentication to connect sql server then set your application pool identity to server administrator .

  2. if you use sql server authentication then check you connection string in web.config of your web application and set user id and password of sql server which allows you to log in .

  3. if your database in other server(access remote database) then first of enable remote access of sql server form sql server property from sql server management studio and enable TCP/IP form sql server configuration manager .

  4. after doing all these stuff and you still can't access the database then check firewall of server form where you are trying to access the database and add one rule in firewall to enable port of sql server(by default sql server use 1433 , to check port of sql server you need to check sql server configuration manager network protocol TCP/IP port).

  5. if your sql server is running on named instance then you need to write port number with sql serer name for example 117.312.21.21/nameofsqlserver,1433.

  6. If you are using cloud hosting like amazon aws or microsoft azure then server or instance will running behind cloud firewall so you need to enable 1433 port in cloud firewall if you have default instance or specific port for sql server for named instance.

  7. If you are using amazon RDS or SQL azure then you need to enable port from security group of that instance.

  8. If you are accessing sql server through sql server authentication mode them make sure you enabled "SQL Server and Windows Authentication Mode" sql server instance property. enter image description here

    1. Restart your sql server instance after making any changes in property as some changes will require restart.

if you further face any difficulty then you need to provide more information about your web site and sql server .

Node.js - How to send data from html to express

Using http.createServer is very low-level and really not useful for creating web applications as-is.

A good framework to use on top of it is Express, and I would seriously suggest using it. You can install it using npm install express.

When you have, you can create a basic application to handle your form:

var express = require('express');
var bodyParser = require('body-parser');
var app     = express();

//Note that in version 4 of express, express.bodyParser() was
//deprecated in favor of a separate 'body-parser' module.
app.use(bodyParser.urlencoded({ extended: true }));

//app.use(express.bodyParser());

app.post('/myaction', function(req, res) {
  res.send('You sent the name "' + req.body.name + '".');
});

app.listen(8080, function() {
  console.log('Server running at http://127.0.0.1:8080/');
});

You can make your form point to it using:

<form action="http://127.0.0.1:8080/myaction" method="post">

The reason you can't run Node on port 80 is because there's already a process running on that port (which is serving your index.html). You could use Express to also serve static content, like index.html, using the express.static middleware.

How to use the CancellationToken property?

You can use ThrowIfCancellationRequested without handling the exception!

The use of ThrowIfCancellationRequested is meant to be used from within a Task (not a Thread). When used within a Task, you do not have to handle the exception yourself (and get the Unhandled Exception error). It will result in leaving the Task, and the Task.IsCancelled property will be True. No exception handling needed.

In your specific case, change the Thread to a Task.

Task t = null;
try
{
    t = Task.Run(() => Work(cancelSource.Token), cancelSource.Token);
}

if (t.IsCancelled)
{
    Console.WriteLine("Canceled!");
}

How do I fix a compilation error for unhandled exception on call to Thread.sleep()?

Thread.sleep can throw an InterruptedException which is a checked exception. All checked exceptions must either be caught and handled or else you must declare that your method can throw it. You need to do this whether or not the exception actually will be thrown. Not declaring a checked exception that your method can throw is a compile error.

You either need to catch it:

try {

} catch (InterruptedException e) {
    e.printStackTrace();
    // handle the exception...
    // For example consider calling Thread.currentThread().interrupt(); here.
}

Or declare that your method can throw an InterruptedException:

Could not load file or assembly ... An attempt was made to load a program with an incorrect format (System.BadImageFormatException)

First of all I got this in VS2017 with an old project I needed to make a tiny change to and upraded all the projects to framework 4.7.

Several others have mentioned selecting Any CPU can fix this issue.

There's a couple places you need to do it, and it might not just be as simple as selecting from the dropdown. This fixed it for me:

1) You need to do it both here:

2) And also in Configuration Manager (right click on solution)

But what if it isn't there???

Then click New and choose these settings: (thanks @RckLN)

How to fix "'System.AggregateException' occurred in mscorlib.dll"

You could handle the exception directly so it would not crash your program (catching the AggregateException). You could also look at the Inner Exception, this will give you a more detailed explanation of what went wrong:

try {
    // your code
} catch (AggregateException e) {

}

Could not load file or assembly or one of its dependencies. Access is denied. The issue is random, but after it happens once, it continues

Had the same issue, fixed with setting the parameter "Enable 32-bit applications" to "true" (in advanced settings of iis application pool).

Could not load file or assembly 'System.Web.WebPages.Razor, Version=2.0.0.0

Short:
In you have this problem with a pure Web API project (and thus don't need razor), try to add it anyway, rebuild, then remove it.

Long story:
I had this problem with a brand-new pure Web API project, except that the stacktrace pointed "System.Web.Mvc" as Calling assembly (see Darin's answer). No reference to MVC, Razor or anything like that in my project though...
I decided to add the MVC packages (AspNet.Mvc, AspNet.WebPages and AspNet.Razor) to check if there was any subsequent problem.
The WebApi app then launched perfectly fine. Then I removed the exact same packages and everything was still OK.

Hope it helps someone.

System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'X' or one of its dependencies when deploying the application

I resolved this problem by renaming the DLL. The DLL had been manually renamed when it was uploaded to its shared location (a version number was appended to the file name). Removing the version number from the downloaded file resolved the issue.

0xC0000005: Access violation reading location 0x00000000

The problem here, as explained in other comments, is that the pointer is being dereference without being properly initialized. Operating systems like Linux keep the lowest addresses (eg first 32MB: 0x00_0000 -0x200_0000) out of the virtual address space of a process. This is done because dereferencing zeroed non-initialized pointers is a common mistake, like in this case. So when this type of mistake happens, instead of actually reading a random variable that happens to be at address 0x0 (but not the memory address the pointer would be intended for if initialized properly), the pointer would be reading from a memory address outside of the process's virtual address space. This causes a page fault, which results in a segmentation fault, and a signal is sent to the process to kill it. That's why you are getting the access violation error.

Access to the path 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\myapp\App_Data' is denied

If you're getting this error, you're probably trying to write to wwwroot. By default this is not allowed, for good reason.

Instead, consider storing your files somewhere besides wwwroot. If you just need to serve the files, store them in a folder outside of inetpub and use a virtual directory to make them visible to IIS.

Original answer:

For those running IIS on Windows Server:

By default, the IIS user does not have write permissions for the wwwroot folder. This can be solved by granting full permissions to the IIS_IUSRS user for wwwroot.

  1. Open File Explorer and go to C:/inetpub/
  2. Right click on wwwroot and click on "Properties"
  3. Go to the Security tab and click "Edit..." to edit permissions
  4. Find and select the IIS user. In my case, it was called IIS_IUSRS ([server name]\IIS_IUSRS).
  5. Select the "Allow" checkbox for all permissions.

C# windows application Event: CLR20r3 on application start

I encountered the same problem when I built an application on a Windows 7 box that had previously been maintained on an XP machine.

The program ran fine when built for Debug, but failed with this error when built for Release. I found the answer on the project's Properties page. Go to the "Build" tab and try changing the Platform Target from "Any CPU" to "x86".

Troubleshooting BadImageFormatException

It can typically occur when you changed the target framework of .csproj and reverted it back to what you started with.

Make sure 1 if supportedRuntime version="a different runtime from cs project target" under startup tag in app.config.

Make sure 2 That also means checking other autogenerated or other files in may be properties folder to see if there is no more runtime mismatch between these files and one that is defined in .csproj file.

These might just save you lot of time before you start trying different things with project properties to overcome the error.

How to resolve Error : Showing a modal dialog box or form when the application is not running in UserInteractive mode is not a valid operation

For Vb.Net Framework 4.0, U can use:

Alert("your message here", Boolean)

The Boolean here can be True or False. True If you want to close the window right after, False If you want to keep the window open.

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. The statement has been terminated

Looks like you have a query that is taking longer than it should. From your stack trace and your code you should be able to determine exactly what query that is.

This type of timeout can have three causes;

  1. There's a deadlock somewhere
  2. The database's statistics and/or query plan cache are incorrect
  3. The query is too complex and needs to be tuned

A deadlock can be difficult to fix, but it's easy to determine whether that is the case. Connect to your database with Sql Server Management Studio. In the left pane right-click on the server node and select Activity Monitor. Take a look at the running processes. Normally most will be idle or running. When the problem occurs you can identify any blocked process by the process state. If you right-click on the process and select details it'll show you the last query executed by the process.

The second issue will cause the database to use a sub-optimal query plan. It can be resolved by clearing the statistics:

exec sp_updatestats

If that doesn't work you could also try

dbcc freeproccache

You should not do this when your server is under heavy load because it will temporarily incur a big performace hit as all stored procs and queries are recompiled when first executed. However, since you state the issue occurs sometimes, and the stack trace indicates your application is starting up, I think you're running a query that is only run on occasionally. You may be better off by forcing SQL Server not to reuse a previous query plan. See this answer for details on how to do that.

I've already touched on the third issue, but you can easily determine whether the query needs tuning by executing the query manually, for example using Sql Server Management Studio. If the query takes too long to complete, even after resetting the statistics you'll probably need to tune it. For help with that, you should post the exact query in a new question.

Could not load file or assembly '' or one of its dependencies

  1. Check if you are referencing an assembly which in turn referencing an old version of unity. For example let's say you have an assembly called ServiceLocator.dll which needs an old version of Unity assembly, now when you reference the ServiceLocator you should provide it with the old version of Unity, and that makes the problem.

  2. May be the output folder where all projects build their assemblies, has an old version of unity.

You can use FusLogVw to find out who is loading the old assemblies, just define a path for the log, and run your solution, then check (in FusLogvw) the first line where the Unity assembly is loaded, double click it and see the calling assembly, and here you go.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I know this was posted about a year ago, but this is for users for future reference.

I came across similar issue. In my case (i will try to be brief, please do let me know if you would like more detail), i was trying to check if a string was empty or not (string is the subject of an email). It always returned the same error message no matter what i did. I knew i was doing it right but it still kept throwing the same error message. Then it dawned in me that, i was checking if the subject (string) of an email (instance/object), what if the email(instance) was already a null at the first place. How could i check for a subject of an email, if the email is already a null..i checked if the the email was empty, it worked fine.

while checking for the subject(string) i used IsNullorWhiteSpace(), IsNullOrEmpty() methods.

if (email == null)
{
     break;
}
else
{
     // your code here
}

In my case it was a spelling mistake in the database name in connection string.

asp.net: Invalid postback or callback argument

I had this same problem with a datalist I"m dynamically binding, adding EnableViewState="false" quieted the error message. I figure if I'm binding programmatically, then the control is being populated on each post back, the view state doesn't have to be maintained if it may or may not change on each call back, that's why I'm dynamically binding it, lol.

how to solve Error cannot add duplicate collection entry of type add with unique key attribute 'value' in iis 7

Just keep the following in mind.

In IIS if you have a folder for example called Pages with multiple websites in it. Website will inherit settings from the web.config file from the parent directory. So even if the folder page (in this example Pages) isn't a website but contains a web.config file, all websites listed inside of it will inherit the setting.

How to solve error message: "Failed to map the path '/'."

I Think this is because of IIS is unable to find the root folder. i.e wwwroot. Restarting the IIS wont be helpful in some scenarios. if the root path has changed, you should bring it back to %SystemDrive%\inetpub\wwwroot

by right clicking sites node in IIS and changing physical path to the above one.

and make sure that your application pool is asp.net v4.0 and running in integrated mode

Node.js Best Practice Exception Handling

You can catch uncaught exceptions, but it's of limited use. See http://debuggable.com/posts/node-js-dealing-with-uncaught-exceptions:4c933d54-1428-443c-928d-4e1ecbdd56cb

monit, forever or upstart can be used to restart node process when it crashes. A graceful shutdown is best you can hope for (e.g. save all in-memory data in uncaught exception handler).

Unable to find the requested .Net Framework Data Provider. It may not be installed. - when following mvc3 asp.net tutorial

In my case, the issue was caused by a connection problem to the SQL database. I just disconnected and then reconnected the SQL datasource from the design view. I am back up and running. Hope this works for everyone.

Where is the Global.asax.cs file?

That's because you created a Web Site instead of a Web Application. The cs/vb files can only be seen in a Web Application, but in a website you can't have a separate cs/vb file.

Edit: In the website you can add a cs file behavior like..

<%@ Application CodeFile="Global.asax.cs" Inherits="ApplicationName.MyApplication" Language="C#" %>

~/Global.asax.cs:

namespace ApplicationName
{
    public partial class MyApplication : System.Web.HttpApplication
    {
        protected void Application_Start()
        {
        }
    }
}

Validation failed for one or more entities while saving changes to SQL Server Database using Entity Framework

This might be due to the maximum number of characters allowed for a specific column, like in sql one field might have following Data Type nvarchar(5) but the number of characters entered from the user is more than the specified, hence the error arises.

WCF Service Client: The content type text/html; charset=utf-8 of the response message does not match the content type of the binding

My solution was rather simple: backup everything from the application, uninstall it, delete everything from the remaining folders (but not the folders so I won't have to grant the same permissions again) then copy back the files from the backup.

Why should I use var instead of a type?

As the others have said, there is no difference in the compiled code (IL) when you use either of the following:

var x1 = new object();
object x2 = new object;

I suppose Resharper warns you because it is [in my opinion] easier to read the first example than the second. Besides, what's the need to repeat the name of the type twice?

Consider the following and you'll get what I mean:

KeyValuePair<string, KeyValuePair<string, int>> y1 = new KeyValuePair<string, KeyValuePair<string, int>>("key", new KeyValuePair<string, int>("subkey", 5));

It's way easier to read this instead:

var y2 = new KeyValuePair<string, KeyValuePair<string, int>>("key", new KeyValuePair<string, int>("subkey", 5));

How to iterate over a string in C?

.NET Global exception handler in console application

No, that's the correct way to do it. This worked exactly as it should, something you can work from perhaps:

using System;

class Program {
    static void Main(string[] args) {
        System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.UnhandledException += UnhandledExceptionTrapper;
        throw new Exception("Kaboom");
    }

    static void UnhandledExceptionTrapper(object sender, UnhandledExceptionEventArgs e) {
        Console.WriteLine(e.ExceptionObject.ToString());
        Console.WriteLine("Press Enter to continue");
        Console.ReadLine();
        Environment.Exit(1);
    }
}

Do keep in mind that you cannot catch type and file load exceptions generated by the jitter this way. They happen before your Main() method starts running. Catching those requires delaying the jitter, move the risky code into another method and apply the [MethodImpl(MethodImplOptions.NoInlining)] attribute to it.

HRESULT: 0x80040154 (REGDB_E_CLASSNOTREG))

This could also be an issue of building the code using a 64 bit configuration. You can try to select x86 as the build platform which can solve this issue. To do this right-click the solution and select Configuration Manager From there you can change the Platform of the project using the 32-bit .dll to x86

Why do I get the "Unhandled exception type IOException"?

Java has a feature called "checked exceptions". That means that there are certain kinds of exceptions, namely those that subclass Exception but not RuntimeException, such that if a method may throw them, it must list them in its throws declaration, say: void readData() throws IOException. IOException is one of those.

Thus, when you are calling a method that lists IOException in its throws declaration, you must either list it in your own throws declaration or catch it.

The rationale for the presence of checked exceptions is that for some kinds of exceptions, you must not ignore the fact that they may happen, because their happening is quite a regular situation, not a program error. So, the compiler helps you not to forget about the possibility of such an exception being raised and requires you to handle it in some way.

However, not all checked exception classes in Java standard library fit under this rationale, but that's a totally different topic.

Cannot use a leading ../ to exit above the top directory

It means that one of the paths has a ".." at the beginning of it that would result in exiting the web site's root folder hierarchy. You need to google "asp.net relative paths" or something like that to help you with your problem.

BTW, a hint to where the problem is is included in the exception page that you saw. It will actually tell you what file it found the problem in.

To head off future occurences of this exception, do a search in the entire solution for this string: "../". If you find any of those in files in the root path of your web site, address them.

Why did a network-related or instance-specific error occur while establishing a connection to SQL Server?

check forthe followings :

Make sure your database engine is configured to accept remote connections

• Start > All Programs > SQL Server 2005 > Configuration Tools > SQL Server Surface Area Configuration • Click on Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections • Select the instance that is having a problem > Database Engine > Remote Connections • Enable local and remote connections • Restart instance

  1. Check the SQL Server service account

• If you are not using a domain account as a service account (for example if you are using NETWORK SERVICE), you may want to switch this first before proceeding

  1. If you are using a named SQL Server instance, make sure you are using that instance name in your connection strings in your ASweb P.NET application

• Usually the format needed to specify the database server is machinename\instancename • Check your connection string as well

How should you diagnose the error SEHException - External component has thrown an exception

I had a similar problem with an SEHException that was thrown when my program first used a native dll wrapper. Turned out that the native DLL for that wrapper was missing. The exception was in no way helpful in solving this. What did help in the end was running procmon in the background and checking if there were any errors when loading all the necessary DLLs.

Globally catch exceptions in a WPF application?

Example code using NLog that will catch exceptions thrown from all threads in the AppDomain, from the UI dispatcher thread and from the async functions:

App.xaml.cs :

public partial class App : Application
{
    private static Logger _logger = LogManager.GetCurrentClassLogger();

    protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e)
    {
        base.OnStartup(e);

"The Controls collection cannot be modified because the control contains code blocks"

In my case I got this error because I was wrongly setting InnerText to a div with html inside it.

                  width: 18px;" />

How to get ELMAH to work with ASP.NET MVC [HandleError] attribute?

I'm new in ASP.NET MVC. I faced the same problem, the following is my workable in my Erorr.vbhtml (it work if you only need to log the error using Elmah log)

@ModelType System.Web.Mvc.HandleErrorInfo

        Dim item As HandleErrorInfo = CType(Model, HandleErrorInfo)
        //To log error with Elmah
        Elmah.ErrorLog.GetDefault(HttpContext.Current).Log(New Elmah.Error(Model.Exception, HttpContext.Current))
    End Code

<h2>

Why XML-Serializable class need a parameterless constructor

During an object's de-serialization, the class responsible for de-serializing an object creates an instance of the serialized class and then proceeds to populate the serialized fields and properties only after acquiring an instance to populate.

You can make your constructor private or internal if you want, just so long as it's parameterless.

How do you check for permissions to write to a directory or file?

UPDATE:

Modified the code based on this answer to get rid of obsolete methods.

You can use the Security namespace to check this:

public void ExportToFile(string filename)
{
    var permissionSet = new PermissionSet(PermissionState.None);
    var writePermission = new FileIOPermission(FileIOPermissionAccess.Write, filename);
    permissionSet.AddPermission(writePermission);

    if (permissionSet.IsSubsetOf(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.PermissionSet))
    {
        using (FileStream fstream = new FileStream(filename, FileMode.Create))
        using (TextWriter writer = new StreamWriter(fstream))
        {
            // try catch block for write permissions
            writer.WriteLine("sometext");

        }
    }
    else
    {
        //perform some recovery action here
    }

}

As far as getting those permission, you are going to have to ask the user to do that for you somehow. If you could programatically do this, then we would all be in trouble ;)

How can the error 'Client found response content type of 'text/html'.. be interpreted

The problem I had was related to SOAP version. The asmx service was configured to accept both versions, 1.1 and 1.2, so, I think that when you are consuming the service, the client or the server doesn't know what version resolve.

To fix that, is necessary add:

using (wsWebService yourService = new wsWebService())
{
    yourService.Url = "https://myUrlService.com/wsWebService.asmx?op=someOption";
    yourService.UseDefaultCredentials = true; // this line depends on your authentication type
    yourService.SoapVersion = SoapProtocolVersion.Soap11; // asign the version of SOAP
    var result = yourService.SomeMethod("Parameter");
}

Where wsWebService is the name of the class generated as a reference.

How can I run another application within a panel of my C# program?

  • Adding some solution in Answer..**

This code has helped me to dock some executable in windows form. like NotePad, Excel, word, Acrobat reader n many more...

But it wont work for some applications. As sometimes when you start process of some application.... wait for idle time... and the try to get its mainWindowHandle.... till the time the main window handle becomes null.....

so I have done one trick to solve this

If you get main window handle as null... then search all the runnning processes on sytem and find you process ... then get the main hadle of the process and the set panel as its parent.

        ProcessStartInfo info = new ProcessStartInfo();

How to compile C program on command line using MinGW?

Where is your gcc?

Sometimes adding a WCF Service Reference generates an empty reference.cs

In my case I had a solution with VB Web Forms project that referenced a C# UserControl. Both the VB project and the CS project had a Service Reference to the same service. The reference appeared under Service References in the VB project and under the Connected Services grouping in the CS (framework) project.

In order to update the service reference (ie, get the Reference.vb file to not be empty) in the VB web forms project, I needed to REMOVE THE CS PROJECT, then update the VB Service Reference, then add the CS project back into the solution.

Laravel 5 - redirect to HTTPS

This is for Larave 5.2.x and greater. If you want to have an option to serve some content over HTTPS and others over HTTP here is a solution that worked for me. You may wonder, why would someone want to serve only some content over HTTPS? Why not serve everything over HTTPS?

Although, it's totally fine to serve the whole site over HTTPS, severing everything over HTTPS has an additional overhead on your server. Remember encryption doesn't come cheap. The slight overhead also has an impact on your app response time. You could argue that commodity hardware is cheap and the impact is negligible but I digress :) I don't like the idea of serving marketing content big pages with images etc over https. So here it goes. It's similar to what others have suggest above using middleware but it's a full solution that allows you to toggle back and forth between HTTP/HTTPS.

First create a middleware.

php artisan make:middleware ForceSSL

This is what your middleware should look like.

<?php

namespace App\Http\Middleware;

use Closure;

class ForceSSL
{

    public function handle($request, Closure $next)
    {

        if (!$request->secure()) {
            return redirect()->secure($request->getRequestUri());
        }

        return $next($request);
    }
}

Note that I'm not filtering based on environment because I have HTTPS setup for both local dev and production so there is not need to.

Add the following to your routeMiddleware \App\Http\Kernel.php so that you can pick and choose which route group should force SSL.

    protected $routeMiddleware = [
    'auth' => \App\Http\Middleware\Authenticate::class,
    'auth.basic' => \Illuminate\Auth\Middleware\AuthenticateWithBasicAuth::class,
    'can' => \Illuminate\Foundation\Http\Middleware\Authorize::class,
    'guest' => \App\Http\Middleware\RedirectIfAuthenticated::class,
    'throttle' => \Illuminate\Routing\Middleware\ThrottleRequests::class,
    'forceSSL' => \App\Http\Middleware\ForceSSL::class,
];

Next, I'd like to secure two basic groups login/signup etc and everything else behind Auth middleware.

Route::group(array('middleware' => 'forceSSL'), function() {
/*user auth*/
Route::get('login', 'AuthController@showLogin');
Route::post('login', 'AuthController@doLogin');

// Password reset routes...
Route::get('password/reset/{token}', 'Auth\PasswordController@getReset');
Route::post('password/reset', 'Auth\PasswordController@postReset');

//other routes like signup etc

});

Route::group(['middleware' => ['auth','forceSSL']], function()
 {
Route::get('dashboard', function(){
    return view('app.dashboard');
});
Route::get('logout', 'AuthController@doLogout');

//other routes for your application
});

Confirm that your middlewares are applied to your routes properly from console.

php artisan route:list

Now you have secured all the forms or sensitive areas of your application, the key now is to use your view template to define your secure and public (non https) links.

Based on the example above you would render your secure links as follows -

<a href="{{secure_url('/login')}}">Login</a>
<a href="{{secure_url('/signup')}}">SignUp</a>

Non secure links can be rendered as

<a href="{{url('/aboutus',[],false)}}">About US</a></li>
<a href="{{url('/promotion',[],false)}}">Get the deal now!</a></li>

What this does is renders a fully qualified URL such as https://yourhost/login and http://yourhost/aboutus

If you were not render fully qualified URL with http and use a relative link url('/aboutus') then https would persists after a user visits a secure site.

Hope this helps!

In java how to get substring from a string till a character c?

or you may try something like

"abc.def.ghi".substring(0,"abc.def.ghi".indexOf(c)-1);

ValueError: all the input arrays must have same number of dimensions

The reason why you get your error is because a "1 by n" matrix is different from an array of length n.

I recommend using hstack() and vstack() instead. Like this:

import numpy as np
a = np.arange(32).reshape(4,8) # 4 rows 8 columns matrix.
b = a[:,-1:]                    # last column of that matrix.

result = np.hstack((a,b)) # stack them horizontally like this:
#array([[ 0,  1,  2,  3,  4,  5,  6,  7,  7],
#       [ 8,  9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 15],
#       [16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 23],
#       [24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 31]])

Notice the repeated "7, 15, 23, 31" column. Also, notice that I used a[:,-1:] instead of a[:,-1]. My version generates a column:

array([[7],
       [15],
       [23],
       [31]])

Instead of a row array([7,15,23,31])

Edit: append() is much slower. Read this answer.

How to include multiple js files using jQuery $.getScript() method

Great answer, adeneo.

It took me a little while to figure out how to make your answer more generic (so that I could load an array of code-defined scripts). Callback gets called when all scripts have loaded and executed. Here is my solution:

    function loadMultipleScripts(scripts, callback){
        var array = [];

        scripts.forEach(function(script){
            array.push($.getScript( script ))
        });

        array.push($.Deferred(function( deferred ){
                    $( deferred.resolve );
                }));

        $.when.apply($, array).done(function(){
                if (callback){
                    callback();
                }
            });
    }

How to validate an e-mail address in swift?

@JeffersonBe's answer is close, but returns true if the string is "something containing [email protected] a valid email" which is not what we want. The following is an extension on String that works well (and allows testing for valid phoneNumber and other data detectors to boot.

/// Helper for various data detector matches.
/// Returns `true` iff the `String` matches the data detector type for the complete string.
func matchesDataDetector(type: NSTextCheckingResult.CheckingType, scheme: String? = nil) -> Bool {
    let dataDetector = try? NSDataDetector(types: type.rawValue)
    guard let firstMatch = dataDetector?.firstMatch(in: self, options: NSRegularExpression.MatchingOptions.reportCompletion, range: NSRange(location: 0, length: length)) else {
        return false
    }
    return firstMatch.range.location != NSNotFound
        // make sure the entire string is an email, not just contains an email
        && firstMatch.range.location == 0
        && firstMatch.range.length == length
        // make sure the link type matches if link scheme
        && (type != .link || scheme == nil || firstMatch.url?.scheme == scheme)
}
/// `true` iff the `String` is an email address in the proper form.
var isEmail: Bool {
    return matchesDataDetector(type: .link, scheme: "mailto")
}
/// `true` iff the `String` is a phone number in the proper form.
var isPhoneNumber: Bool {
    return matchesDataDetector(type: .phoneNumber)
}
/// number of characters in the `String` (required for above).
var length: Int {
    return self.characters.count
}

Making an API call in Python with an API that requires a bearer token

If you are using requests module, an alternative option is to write an auth class, as discussed in "New Forms of Authentication":

import requests

class BearerAuth(requests.auth.AuthBase):
    def __init__(self, token):
        self.token = token
    def __call__(self, r):
        r.headers["authorization"] = "Bearer " + self.token
        return r

and then can you send requests like this

response = requests.get('https://www.example.com/', auth=BearerAuth('3pVzwec1Gs1m'))

which allows you to use the same auth argument just like basic auth, and may help you in certain situations.

LDAP root query syntax to search more than one specific OU

After speaking with an LDAP expert, it's not possible this way. One query can't search more than one DC or OU.

Your options are:

  1. Run more then 1 query and parse the result.
  2. Use a filter to find the desired users/objects based off a different attribute like an AD group or by name.

Convert a JSON string to object in Java ME?

The simplest option is Jackson:

MyObject ob = new ObjectMapper().readValue(jsonString, MyObject.class);

There are other similarly simple to use libraries (Gson was already mentioned); but some choices are more laborious, like original org.json library, which requires you to create intermediate "JSONObject" even if you have no need for those.

Open files always in a new tab

For anyone who don't want to disabled Preview Mode.

As I read whole of comments and I found what I preferred that is the shortcut key to pin the opened file from Quick Open/Ctrl+P or that's mean to keep the opened file to the editor, and yes also don't need to switch your hand to the mouse to double-click on files list.

Thanks to @jontem and @MattLBeck.

Call save command with Ctrl+S (?+s on Mac) is the easiest way to reach what I preferred.

And if you found out you do this to keep opened file to editor quite frequently, yes I preferred you should setting the option "workbench.editor.enablePreview": false or "workbench.editor.enablePreviewFromQuickOpen": false as others mentioned before.

Batch files - number of command line arguments

The last answer was two years ago now, but I needed a version for more than nine command line arguments. May be another one also does...

@echo off
setlocal

set argc_=1
set arg0_=%0
set argv_=

:_LOOP
set arg_=%1
if defined arg_ (
  set arg%argc_%_=%1
  set argv_=%argv_% %1
  set /a argc_+=1
  shift
  goto _LOOP
)
::dont count arg0
set /a argc_-=1
echo %argc_% arg(s)

for /L %%i in (0,1,%argc_%) do (
  call :_SHOW_ARG arg%%i_ %%arg%%i_%%
)

echo converted to local args
call :_LIST_ARGS %argv_%
exit /b

:_LIST_ARGS
setlocal
set argc_=0
echo arg0=%0

:_LOOP_LIST_ARGS
set arg_=%1
if not defined arg_ exit /b
set /a argc_+=1
call :_SHOW_ARG arg%argc_% %1
shift
goto _LOOP_LIST_ARGS

:_SHOW_ARG
echo %1=%2
exit /b

The solution is the first 19 lines and converts all arguments to variables in a c-like style. All other stuff just probes the result and shows conversion to local args. You can reference arguments by index in any function.

Connect to external server by using phpMyAdmin

You can use the phpmyadmin setup page (./phpmyadmin/setup) to generate a new config file (config.inc.php) for you. This file is found at the root of the phpMyAdmin directory.

Just create the config folder as prompted in setup page, add your servers, then click the 'Save' button. This will create a new config file in the config folder you just created.

You now have only to move the config.inc.php file to the main phpMyAdmin folder, or just copy the lines concerning the servers if you got some old configuration done already you'd like to keep.

Don't forget to delete the config folder afterwards.

Setting a max character length in CSS

Modern CSS Grid Answer

View the fully working code on CodePen. Given the following HTML:

<div class="container">
    <p>Several paragraphs of text...</p>
</div>

You can use CSS Grid to create three columns and tell the container to take a maximum width of 70 characters for the middle column which contains our paragraph.

.container
{
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr, 70ch 1fr;
}

p {
  grid-column: 2 / 3;
}

This is what it looks like (Checkout CodePen for a fully working example):

enter image description here

Here is another example where you can use minmax to set a range of values. On small screens the width will be set to 50 characters wide and on large screens it will be 70 characters wide.

.container
{
  display: grid;
  grid-template-columns: 1fr minmax(50ch, 70ch) 1fr;
}

p {
  grid-column: 2 / 3;
}

JQuery or JavaScript: How determine if shift key being pressed while clicking anchor tag hyperlink?

I had a similar problem, trying to capture a 'shift+click' but since I was using a third party control with a callback rather than the standard click handler, I didn't have access to the event object and its associated e.shiftKey.

I ended up handling the mouse down event to record the shift-ness and then using it later in my callback.

    var shiftHeld = false;
    $('#control').on('mousedown', function (e) { shiftHeld = e.shiftKey });

Posted just in case someone else ends up here searching for a solution to this problem.

AngularJS : When to use service instead of factory

Services

Syntax: module.service( 'serviceName', function ); Result: When declaring serviceName as an injectable argument you will be provided the actual function reference passed to module.service.

Usage: Could be useful for sharing utility functions that are useful to invoke by simply appending () to the injected function reference. Could also be run with injectedArg.call( this ) or similar.

Factories

Syntax: module.factory( 'factoryName', function );

Result: When declaring factoryName as an injectable argument you will be provided the value that is returned by invoking the function reference passed to module.factory.

Usage: Could be useful for returning a 'class' function that can then be new'ed to create instances.

Providers

Syntax: module.provider( 'providerName', function );

Result: When declaring providerName as an injectable argument you will be provided the value that is returned by invoking the $get method of the function reference passed to module.provider.

Usage: Could be useful for returning a 'class' function that can then be new'ed to create instances but that requires some sort of configuration before being injected. Perhaps useful for classes that are reusable across projects? Still kind of hazy on this one.

How to Uninstall RVM?

It’s easy; just do the following:

rvm implode

or

rm -rf ~/.rvm

And don’t forget to remove the script calls in the following files:

  • ~/.bashrc
  • ~/.bash_profile
  • ~/.profile

And maybe others depending on whatever shell you’re using.

How to fix warning from date() in PHP"

You could also use this:

ini_alter('date.timezone','Asia/Calcutta');

You should call this before calling any date function. It accepts the key as the first parameter to alter PHP settings during runtime and the second parameter is the value.

I had done these things before I figured out this:

  1. Changed the PHP.timezone to "Asia/Calcutta" - but did not work
  2. Changed the lat and long parameters in the ini - did not work
  3. Used date_default_timezone_set("Asia/Calcutta"); - did not work
  4. Used ini_alter() - IT WORKED
  5. Commented date_default_timezone_set("Asia/Calcutta"); - IT WORKED
  6. Reverted the changes made to the PHP.ini - IT WORKED

For me the init_alter() method got it all working.

How to list files in a directory in a C program?

One tiny addition to JB Jansen's answer - in the main readdir() loop I'd add this:

  if (dir->d_type == DT_REG)
  {
     printf("%s\n", dir->d_name);
  }

Just checking if it's really file, not (sym)link, directory, or whatever.

How to easily resize/optimize an image size with iOS?

The easiest and most straightforward way to resize your images would be this

float maxRatio = 320.0/480.0;

if(imgRatio!=maxRatio){

How to sort a List of objects by their date (java collections, List<Object>)

Do not access or modify the collection in the Comparator. The comparator should be used only to determine which object is comes before another. The two objects that are to be compared are supplied as arguments.

Date itself is comparable, so, using generics:

class MovieComparator implements Comparator<Movie> {
    public int compare(Movie m1, Movie m2) {
       //possibly check for nulls to avoid NullPointerException
       return m1.getDate().compareTo(m2.getDate());
    }
}

And do not instantiate the comparator on each sort. Use:

private static final MovieComparator comparator = new MovieComparator();

String.strip() in Python

If you can comment out code and your program still works, then yes, that code was optional.

.strip() with no arguments (or None as the first argument) removes all whitespace at the start and end, including spaces, tabs, newlines and carriage returns. Leaving it in doesn't do any harm, and allows your program to deal with unexpected extra whitespace inserted into the file.

For example, by using .strip(), the following two lines in a file would lead to the same end result:

 foo\tbar \n
foo\tbar\n

I'd say leave it in.

Spring Boot - Handle to Hibernate SessionFactory

The simplest and least verbose way to autowire your Hibernate SessionFactory is:

This is the solution for Spring Boot 1.x with Hibernate 4:

application.properties:

spring.jpa.properties.hibernate.current_session_context_class=
org.springframework.orm.hibernate4.SpringSessionContext

Configuration class:

@Bean
public HibernateJpaSessionFactoryBean sessionFactory() {
    return new HibernateJpaSessionFactoryBean();
}

Then you can autowire the SessionFactory in your services as usual:

@Autowired
private SessionFactory sessionFactory;

As of Spring Boot 1.5 with Hibernate 5, this is now the preferred way:

application.properties:

spring.jpa.properties.hibernate.current_session_context_class=

How to select the row with the maximum value in each group

Since {dplyr} v1.0.0 (May 2020) there is the new slice_* syntax which supersedes top_n().

See also https://dplyr.tidyverse.org/reference/slice.html.

library(tidyverse)

ID    <- c(1,1,1,2,2,2,2,3,3)
Value <- c(2,3,5,2,5,8,17,3,5)
Event <- c(1,1,2,1,2,1,2,2,2)

group <- data.frame(Subject=ID, pt=Value, Event=Event)

group %>%
  group_by(Subject) %>%
  slice_max(pt)
#> # A tibble: 3 x 3
#> # Groups:   Subject [3]
#>   Subject    pt Event
#>     <dbl> <dbl> <dbl>

Does Java have something like C#'s ref and out keywords?

Direct answer: No

But you can simulate reference with wrappers.

And do the following:

void changeString( _<String> str ) {
    str.s("def");
}

void testRef() {
     _<String> abc = new _<String>("abc");
     changeString( abc );
     out.println( abc ); // prints def
}

Out

void setString( _<String> ref ) {
    str.s( "def" );
}
void testOut(){
    _<String> abc = _<String>();
    setString( abc );
    out.println(abc); // prints def
}

And basically any other type such as:

_<Integer> one = new <Integer>(1);
addOneTo( one );

out.println( one ); // May print 2

How to margin the body of the page (html)?

I'm not sure where you read this, but this is the accepted way of setting CSS styles inline is:

<body style="margin-top: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px;">

And with a stylesheet:

body
{
  margin-top: 0px;
  margin-left: 0px;
  margin-right: 0px;
}

How to implement an STL-style iterator and avoid common pitfalls?

What is the "realm" in basic authentication

A realm can be seen as an area (not a particular page, it could be a group of pages) for which the credentials are used; this is also the string that will be shown when the browser pops up the login window, e.g.

Please enter your username and password for <realm name>:

When the realm changes, the browser may show another popup window if it doesn't have credentials for that particular realm.

How to directly execute SQL query in C#?

To execute your command directly from within C#, you would use the SqlCommand class.

Quick sample code using paramaterized SQL (to avoid injection attacks) might look like this:

string queryString = "SELECT tPatCulIntPatIDPk, tPatSFirstname, tPatSName, tPatDBirthday  FROM  [dbo].[TPatientRaw] WHERE tPatSName = @tPatSName";
string connectionString = "Server=.\PDATA_SQLEXPRESS;Database=;User Id=sa;Password=2BeChanged!;";

using (SqlConnection connection = new SqlConnection(connectionString))
{
    SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(queryString, connection);
    command.Parameters.AddWithValue("@tPatSName", "Your-Parm-Value");
    connection.Open();
    SqlDataReader reader = command.ExecuteReader();
    try
    {
        while (reader.Read())
        {
            Console.WriteLine(String.Format("{0}, {1}",
            reader["tPatCulIntPatIDPk"], reader["tPatSFirstname"]));// etc
        }
    }
    finally
    {
        // Always call Close when done reading.
        reader.Close();
    }
}

Create Generic method constraining T to an Enum

It should also be considered that since the release of C# 7.3 using Enum constraints is supported out-of-the-box without having to do additional checking and stuff.

So going forward and given you've changed the language version of your project to C# 7.3 the following code is going to work perfectly fine:

    private static T GetEnumFromString<T>(string value, T defaultValue) where T : Enum
    {
        // Your code goes here...
    }

In case you're don't know how to change the language version to C# 7.3 see the following screenshot: enter image description here

EDIT 1 - Required Visual Studio Version and considering ReSharper

For Visual Studio to recognize the new syntax you need at least version 15.7. You can find that also mentioned in Microsoft's release notes, see Visual Studio 2017 15.7 Release Notes. Thanks @MohamedElshawaf for pointing out this valid question.

Pls also note that in my case ReSharper 2018.1 as of writing this EDIT does not yet support C# 7.3. Having ReSharper activated it highlights the Enum constraint as an error telling me Cannot use 'System.Array', 'System.Delegate', 'System.Enum', 'System.ValueType', 'object' as type parameter constraint. ReSharper suggests as a quick fix to Remove 'Enum' constraint of type paramter T of method

However, if you turn off ReSharper temporarily under Tools -> Options -> ReSharper Ultimate -> General you'll see that the syntax is perfectly fine given that you use VS 15.7 or higher and C# 7.3 or higher.

How to call a shell script from python code?

Subprocess module is a good module to launch subprocesses. You can use it to call shell commands as this:

subprocess.call(["ls","-l"]);
#basic syntax
#subprocess.call(args, *)

You can see its documentation here.

If you have your script written in some .sh file or a long string, then you can use os.system module. It is fairly simple and easy to call:

import os
os.system("your command here")
# or
os.system('sh file.sh')

This command will run the script once, to completion, and block until it exits.

How to store(bitmap image) and retrieve image from sqlite database in android?

If you are working with Android's MediaStore database, here is how to store an image and then display it after it is saved.

on button click write this

 Intent in = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_PICK,
                    android.provider.MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI);
            in.putExtra("crop", "true");
            in.putExtra("outputX", 100);
            in.putExtra("outputY", 100);
            in.putExtra("scale", true);
            in.putExtra("return-data", true);

            startActivityForResult(in, 1);

then do this in your activity

@Override
    protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
        // TODO Auto-generated method stub
        super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);

        if (requestCode == 1 && resultCode == RESULT_OK && data != null) {

            Bitmap bmp = (Bitmap) data.getExtras().get("data");

            img.setImageBitmap(bmp);
            btnadd.requestFocus();

            ByteArrayOutputStream baos = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
            bmp.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 100, baos);
            byte[] b = baos.toByteArray();

I think I have found out a solution, that looks quite bulletproof while working on most platforms. Here is the idea:

  1. Create a JVM-wide mutex that you acquire before spawning new process/killing a process
  2. Use platform-dependent code to acquire list of child processes + pids of your JVM process
  3. Spawn new process
  4. Acquire new list of child processes + pids and compare with the previous list. The one that is new is your guy.

Since you check only for child processes, you cannot be wronged by some other process in the same machine. JVM-wide mutex than allows you to be sure, that the new process is the correct one.

Reading child process list is simpler than getting PID from process objects, because it does not require WIN API calls on windows, and, more importantly, it has been done already in several libs.

Below is an implementation of the above idea using JavaSysMon library. It

class UDKSpawner {

    private int uccPid;
    private Logger uccLog;

    /**
     * Mutex that forces only one child process to be spawned at a time.
     *
     */
    private static final Object spawnProcessMutex = new Object();

    /**
     * Spawns a new UDK process and sets {@link #uccPid} to it's PID. To work correctly,
     * the code relies on the fact that no other method in this JVM runs UDK processes and
     * that no method kills a process unless it acquires lock on spawnProcessMutex.
     * @param procBuilder
     * @return
     */
    private Process spawnUDK(ProcessBuilder procBuilder) throws IOException {
        synchronized (spawnProcessMutex){
            JavaSysMon monitor = new JavaSysMon();
            DirectUDKChildProcessVisitor beforeVisitor = new DirectUDKChildProcessVisitor();
            monitor.visitProcessTree(monitor.currentPid(), beforeVisitor);
            Set<Integer> alreadySpawnedProcesses = beforeVisitor.getUdkPids();

            Process proc = procBuilder.start();

            DirectUDKChildProcessVisitor afterVisitor = new DirectUDKChildProcessVisitor();
            monitor.visitProcessTree(monitor.currentPid(), afterVisitor);
            Set<Integer> newProcesses = afterVisitor.getUdkPids();

            newProcesses.removeAll(alreadySpawnedProcesses);

            if(newProcesses.isEmpty()){
                uccLog.severe("There is no new UKD PID.");
            }
            else if(newProcesses.size() > 1){
                uccLog.severe("Multiple new candidate UDK PIDs");
            } else {
                uccPid = newProcesses.iterator().next();
            }
            return proc;
        }
    }

    private void killUDKByPID(){
        if(uccPid < 0){
            uccLog.severe("Cannot kill UCC by PID. PID not set.");
            return;
        }
        synchronized(spawnProcessMutex){
            JavaSysMon monitor = new JavaSysMon();
            monitor.killProcessTree(uccPid, false);
        }
    }

    private static class DirectUDKChildProcessVisitor implements ProcessVisitor {

How open PowerShell as administrator from the run window

Yes, it is possible to run PowerShell through the run window. However, it would be burdensome and you will need to enter in the password for computer. This is similar to how you will need to set up when you run cmd:

runas /user:(ComputerName)\(local admin) powershell.exe

So a basic example would be:

runas /user:MyLaptop\[email protected]  powershell.exe

You can find more information on this subject in Runas.

However, you could also do one more thing :

  • 1: `Windows+R`
  • 2: type: `powershell`
  • 3: type: `Start-Process powershell -verb runAs`

then your system will execute the elevated powershell.

How to browse for a file in java swing library?

I ended up using this quick piece of code that did exactly what I needed:

final JFileChooser fc = new JFileChooser();
fc.showOpenDialog(this);

try {
    // Open an input stream
    Scanner reader = new Scanner(fc.getSelectedFile());
}

How do I check if an object has a key in JavaScript?

You should use hasOwnProperty. For example:

myObj.hasOwnProperty('myKey');

Note: If you are using ESLint, the above may give you an error for violating the no-prototype-builtins rule, in that case the workaround is as below:

Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty.call(myObj, 'myKey');

MySQL Data Source not appearing in Visual Studio

Tried everything but on Visual Studio 2015 Community edition I got it working when I installed MySQL for Visual Studio 1.2.4+ from http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/windows/visualstudio/ At time of writing I could download 1.2.6 which worked for me.

Remove the legend on a matplotlib figure

If you want to plot a Pandas dataframe and want to remove the legend, add legend=None as parameter to the plot command.

import pandas as pd
import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

df2 = pd.DataFrame(np.random.randn(10, 5))
df2.plot(legend=None)
plt.show()

How to fix libeay32.dll was not found error

I've encountered this kind of problem before. I was using the Windows x64 operating system, so I was getting an error in openssl. Later I realized that the path to the OpenSSL installation file was "C: \ OpenSSL win32". Finally, I deleted the OpenSSL program and installed it to "C: \ Program Files (x86)" and used it smoothly.

'numpy.ndarray' object is not callable error

The error TypeError: 'numpy.ndarray' object is not callable means that you tried to call a numpy array as a function. We can reproduce the error like so in the repl:

In [16]: import numpy as np

In [17]: np.array([1,2,3])()
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TypeError Traceback (most recent call last)
/home/user/<ipython-input-17-1abf8f3c8162> in <module>()
----> 1 np.array([1,2,3])()

TypeError: 'numpy.ndarray' object is not callable

If we are to assume that the error is indeed coming from the snippet of code that you posted (something that you should check,) then you must have reassigned either pd.rolling_mean or pd.rolling_std to a numpy array earlier in your code.

What I mean is something like this:

In [1]: import numpy as np

In [2]: import pandas as pd

In [3]: pd.rolling_mean(np.array([1,2,3]), 20, min_periods=5) # Works
Out[3]: array([ nan,  nan,  nan])

In [4]: pd.rolling_mean = np.array([1,2,3])

In [5]: pd.rolling_mean(np.array([1,2,3]), 20, min_periods=5) # Doesn't work anymore...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
TypeError Traceback (most recent call last)
/home/user/<ipython-input-5-f528129299b9> in <module>()
----> 1 pd.rolling_mean(np.array([1,2,3]), 20, min_periods=5) # Doesn't work anymore...

TypeError: 'numpy.ndarray' object is not callable

So, basically you need to search the rest of your codebase for pd.rolling_mean = ... and/or pd.rolling_std = ... to see where you may have overwritten them.

Also, if you'd like, you can put in reload(pd) just before your snippet, which should make it run by restoring the value of pd to what you originally imported it as, but I still highly recommend that you try to find where you may have reassigned the given functions.

Alternative to mysql_real_escape_string without connecting to DB

Well, according to the mysql_real_escape_string function reference page: "mysql_real_escape_string() calls MySQL's library function mysql_real_escape_string, which escapes the following characters: \x00, \n, \r, \, ', " and \x1a."

With that in mind, then the function given in the second link you posted should do exactly what you need:

function mres($value)
{
    $search = array("\\",  "\x00", "\n",  "\r",  "'",  '"', "\x1a");
    $replace = array("\\\\","\\0","\\n", "\\r", "\'", '\"', "\\Z");

    return str_replace($search, $replace, $value);
}

Remove "Using default security password" on Spring Boot

In a Spring Boot 2 application you can either exclude the service configuration from autoconfiguration:

spring.autoconfigure.exclude=org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.security.servlet.UserDetailsServiceAutoConfiguration

or if you just want to hide the message in the logs you can simply change the log level:

logging.level.org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.security=WARN

How to append new data onto a new line

I presume that all you are wanting is simple string concatenation:

def storescores():

   hs = open("hst.txt","a")
   hs.write(name + " ")
   hs.close()

Alternatively, change the " " to "\n" for a newline.

ValidateAntiForgeryToken purpose, explanation and example

MVC's anti-forgery support writes a unique value to an HTTP-only cookie and then the same value is written to the form. When the page is submitted, an error is raised if the cookie value doesn't match the form value.

It's important to note that the feature prevents cross site request forgeries. That is, a form from another site that posts to your site in an attempt to submit hidden content using an authenticated user's credentials. The attack involves tricking the logged in user into submitting a form, or by simply programmatically triggering a form when the page loads.

The feature doesn't prevent any other type of data forgery or tampering based attacks.

To use it, decorate the action method or controller with the ValidateAntiForgeryToken attribute and place a call to @Html.AntiForgeryToken() in the forms posting to the method.

Browse for a directory in C#

Note: there is no guarantee this code will work in future versions of the .Net framework. Using private .Net framework internals as done here through reflection is probably not good overall. Use the interop solution mentioned at the bottom, as the Windows API is less likely to change.

If you are looking for a Folder picker that looks more like the Windows 7 dialog, with the ability to copy and paste from a textbox at the bottom and the navigation pane on the left with favorites and common locations, then you can get access to that in a very lightweight way.

The FolderBrowserDialog UI is very minimal:

enter image description here

But you can have this instead:

enter image description here

Here's a class that opens a Vista-style folder picker using the .Net private IFileDialog interface, without directly using interop in the code (.Net takes care of that for you). It falls back to the pre-Vista dialog if not in a high enough Windows version. Should work in Windows 7, 8, 9, 10 and higher (theoretically).

I developed this as a cleaned up version of .NET Win 7-style folder select dialog by Bill Seddon of lyquidity.com (I have no affiliation). I wrote my own because his solution requires an additional Reflection class that isn't needed for this focused purpose, uses exception-based flow control, doesn't cache the results of its reflection calls. Note that the nested static VistaDialog class is so that its static reflection variables don't try to get populated if the Show method is never called.

It is used like so in a Windows Form:

var dialog = new FolderSelectDialog {
    InitialDirectory = musicFolderTextBox.Text,
    Title = "Select a folder to import music from"
};
if (dialog.Show(Handle)) {
    musicFolderTextBox.Text = dialog.FileName;
}

You can of course play around with its options and what properties it exposes. For example, it allows multiselect in the Vista-style dialog.

Also, please note that Simon Mourier gave an answer that shows how to do the exact same job using interop against the Windows API directly, though his version would have to be supplemented to use the older style dialog if in an older version of Windows. Unfortunately, I hadn't found his post yet when I worked up my solution. Name your poison!

Append a dictionary to a dictionary

There is the .update() method :)

update([other]) Update the dictionary with the key/value pairs from other, overwriting existing keys. Return None.

update() accepts either another dictionary object or an iterable of key/value pairs (as tuples or other iterables of length two). If keyword arguments are specified, the dictionary is then updated with those key/value pairs: d.update(red=1, blue=2).

Changed in version 2.4: Allowed the argument to be an iterable of key/value pairs and allowed keyword arguments.

What is the difference between SAX and DOM?

Well, you are close.

In SAX, events are triggered when the XML is being parsed. When the parser is parsing the XML, and encounters a tag starting (e.g. <something>), then it triggers the tagStarted event (actual name of event might differ). Similarly when the end of the tag is met while parsing (</something>), it triggers tagEnded. Using a SAX parser implies you need to handle these events and make sense of the data returned with each event.

In DOM, there are no events triggered while parsing. The entire XML is parsed and a DOM tree (of the nodes in the XML) is generated and returned. Once parsed, the user can navigate the tree to access the various data previously embedded in the various nodes in the XML.

In general, DOM is easier to use but has an overhead of parsing the entire XML before you can start using it.

How do I add a new column to a Spark DataFrame (using PySpark)?

To add new column with some custom value or dynamic value calculation which will be populated based on the existing columns.

e.g.

|ColumnA | ColumnB |
|--------|---------|
| 10     | 15      |
| 10     | 20      |
| 10     | 30      |

and new ColumnC as ColumnA+ColumnB

|ColumnA | ColumnB | ColumnC|
|--------|---------|--------|
| 10     | 15      | 25     |
| 10     | 20      | 30     |
| 10     | 30      | 40     |

using

#to add new column
def customColumnVal(row):
rd=row.asDict()
rd["ColumnC"]=row["ColumnA"] + row["ColumnB"]

new_row=Row(**rd)
return new_row
----------------------------
#convert DF to RDD
df_rdd= input_dataframe.rdd

#apply new fucntion to rdd
output_dataframe=df_rdd.map(customColumnVal).toDF()

input_dataframe is the dataframe which will get modified and customColumnVal function is having code to add new column.

How to schedule a task to run when shutting down windows

On Windows 10 Pro, the batch file can be registered; the workaround of registering cmd.exe and specifying the bat file as a param isn't needed. I just did this, registering both a shutdown script and a startup (boot) script, and it worked.

How do I draw a grid onto a plot in Python?

You want to use pyplot.grid:

x = numpy.arange(0, 1, 0.05)
y = numpy.power(x, 2)

fig = plt.figure()
ax = fig.gca()
ax.set_xticks(numpy.arange(0, 1, 0.1))
ax.set_yticks(numpy.arange(0, 1., 0.1))
plt.scatter(x, y)
plt.grid()
plt.show()

ax.xaxis.grid and ax.yaxis.grid can control grid lines properties.

How to find substring inside a string (or how to grep a variable)?

This works in Bash without forking external commands:

function has_substring() {
   [[ "$1" != "${2/$1/}" ]]
}

Example usage:

name="hello/world"
if has_substring "$name" "/"
then
   echo "Indeed, $name contains a slash!"
fi

Getting values from JSON using Python

Using Python to extract a value from the provided Json

Working sample:-

import json
import sys

//load the data into an element
data={"test1" : "1", "test2" : "2", "test3" : "3"}

//dumps the json object into an element
json_str = json.dumps(data)

//load the json to a string
resp = json.loads(json_str)

//print the resp
print (resp)

//extract an element in the response
print (resp['test1'])

What is the difference between C++ and Visual C++?

Key differences:

C++ is a general-purpose programming language, but is developed from the originally C programming language. It was developed by Bjarne Stroustrup at Bell Labs starting in 1979. C++ was originally named C with Classes. It was renamed C++ in 1983.

Visual C++, on the other hand, is not a programming language at all. It is in fact a development environment. It is an “integrated development environment (IDE) product from Microsoft for the C, C++, and C++/CLI programming languages.” Microsoft Visual C++, also known as MSVC or VC++, is sold as part of the Microsoft Visual Studio app.

Uncaught ReferenceError: angular is not defined - AngularJS not working

As you know angular.module( declared under angular.js file.So before accessing angular.module, you must have make it available by using <script src="lib/angular/angular.js"></script>(In your case) after then you can call angular.module. It will work.

like

<html lang="en">
<head>
  <meta charset="utf-8">
  <title>My AngularJS App</title>
  <link rel="stylesheet" href="css/app.css"/>
<!-- In production use:
  <script src="//ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/angularjs/1.0.7/angular.min.js"></script>
  -->
  <script src="lib/angular/angular.js"></script>
  <script src="lib/angular/angular-route.js"></script>
  <script src="js/app.js"></script>
  <script src="js/services.js"></script>
  <script src="js/controllers.js"></script>
  <script src="js/filters.js"></script>
  <script src="js/directives.js"></script>

    <script>
        var app = angular.module('myApp',[]);

        app.directive('myDirective',function(){

            return function(scope, element,attrs) {
                element.bind('click',function() {alert('click')});
            };

        });
    </script>
</head>
<body ng-app="myApp">
    <div >
        <button my-directive>Click Me!</button>
    </div>
    <h1>{{2+3}}</h1>

</body>
</html>

Getting the button into the top right corner inside the div box

#button {
    line-height: 12px;
    width: 18px;
    font-size: 8pt;
    font-family: tahoma;

Effect of using sys.path.insert(0, path) and sys.path(append) when loading modules

Because python checks in the directories in sequential order starting at the first directory in sys.path list, till it find the .py file it was looking for.

Ideally, the current directory or the directory of the script is the first always the first element in the list, unless you modify it, like you did. From documentation -

As initialized upon program startup, the first item of this list, path[0], is the directory containing the script that was used to invoke the Python interpreter. If the script directory is not available (e.g. if the interpreter is invoked interactively or if the script is read from standard input), path[0] is the empty string, which directs Python to search modules in the current directory first. Notice that the script directory is inserted before the entries inserted as a result of PYTHONPATH.

So, most probably, you had a .py file with the same name as the module you were trying to import from, in the current directory (where the script was being run from).

Also, a thing to note about ImportErrors , lets say the import error says - ImportError: No module named main - it doesn't mean the main.py is overwritten, no if that was overwritten we would not be having issues trying to read it. Its some module above this that got overwritten with a .py or some other file.

Example -

My directory structure looks like -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py

Now From testmain.py , I call from shared import phtest , it works fine.

Now lets say I introduce a shared.py in test directory` , example -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py
  - shared.py

Now when I try to do from shared import phtest from testmain.py , I will get the error -

ImportError: cannot import name 'phtest'

As you can see above, the file that is causing the issue is shared.py , not phtest.py .

Applying CSS styles to all elements inside a DIV

Write all class/id CSS as below. #applyCSS ID will be parent of all CSS code.

For example you add class .ui-bar-a in CSS for applying to your div:

#applyCSS .ui-bar-a  { font-size:11px; } /* This will be your CSS part */

Below is your HTML part:

<div id="applyCSS">
   <div class="ui-bar-a">testing</div>
</div>

pip broke. how to fix DistributionNotFound error?

I find this problem in my MacBook, the reason is because as @Stephan said, I use easy_install to install pip, and the mixture of both py package manage tools led to the pkg_resources.DistributionNotFound problem. The resolve is:

easy_install --upgrade pip

Remember: just use one of the above tools to manage your Py packages.

Reload content in modal (twitter bootstrap)

step 1 : Create a wrapper for the modal called clone-modal-wrapper.

step 2 : Create a blank div called modal-wrapper.

Step 3 : Copy the modal element from clone-modal-wrapper to modal-wrapper.

step 4 : Toggle the modal of modal-wrapper.

<a data-toggle="modal" class='my-modal'>Open modal</a>

<div class="clone-modal-wrapper">
   <div class='my-modal' class="modal fade">
      <div class="modal-dialog">
         <div class="modal-content">
            <div class="modal-header">
               <a class="close" data-dismiss="modal">×</a>
               <h3>Header</h3>
            </div>
            <div class="modal-body"></div>
            <div class="modal-footer">
               <input type="submit" class="btn btn-success" value="Save"/>
            </div>
         </div>
      </div>
   </div>
</div>

<div class="modal-wrapper"></div>

$("a[data-target=#myModal]").click(function (e) {
    e.preventDefault();
    $(".modal-wrapper").html($(".clone-modal-wrapper").html());
    $('.modal-wrapper').find('.my-modal').modal('toggle');
});

How do I return multiple values from a function?

Generally, the "specialized structure" actually IS a sensible current state of an object, with its own methods.

class Some3SpaceThing(object):
  def __init__(self,x):
    self.g(x)
  def g(self,x):
    self.y0 = x + 1
    self.y1 = x * 3
    self.y2 = y0 ** y3

r = Some3SpaceThing( x )
r.y0
r.y1
r.y2

I like to find names for anonymous structures where possible. Meaningful names make things more clear.

HttpServletRequest - how to obtain the referring URL?

It's available in the HTTP referer header. You can get it in a servlet as follows:

String referrer = request.getHeader("referer"); // Yes, with the legendary misspelling.

You, however, need to realize that this is a client-controlled value and can thus be spoofed to something entirely different or even removed. Thus, whatever value it returns, you should not use it for any critical business processes in the backend, but only for presentation control (e.g. hiding/showing/changing certain pure layout parts) and/or statistics.

For the interested, background about the misspelling can be found in Wikipedia.

Update only specific fields in a models.Model

Usually, the correct way of updating certain fields in one or more model instances is to use the update() method on the respective queryset. Then you do something like this:

affected_surveys = Survey.objects.filter(
    # restrict your queryset by whatever fits you
    # ...
    ).update(active=True)

This way, you don't need to call save() on your model anymore because it gets saved automatically. Also, the update() method returns the number of survey instances that were affected by your update.

How to catch SQLServer timeout exceptions

here: http://www.tech-archive.net/Archive/DotNet/microsoft.public.dotnet.framework.adonet/2006-10/msg00064.html

You can read also that Thomas Weingartner wrote:

Timeout: SqlException.Number == -2 (This is an ADO.NET error code)
General Network Error: SqlException.Number == 11
Deadlock: SqlException.Number == 1205 (This is an SQL Server error code)

...

We handle the "General Network Error" as a timeout exception too. It only occurs under rare circumstances e.g. when your update/insert/delete query will raise a long running trigger.

How to determine equality for two JavaScript objects?

Sure, while we're at it I'll throw in my own reinvention of the wheel (I'm proud of the number of spokes and materials used):

var equals = function ( objectA, objectB ) {
    var result = false,
        keysA,

    }

    // Check what kind of variables they are to see what sort of comparison we should make.

    // If they are both functions, let us do a string comparison.
    else if ( typeof objectA === "function" ) {

    }

    else {

    }

    // Return a default if nothing has already been returned.
    return result;
};

It returns false as quickly as possible, but of course for a large object where the difference is deeply nested it could be less effective. In my own scenario, good handling of nested arrays is important.

Hope it helps someone needing this kind of 'wheel'.

Why does overflow:hidden not work in a <td>?

That's just the way TD's are. I believe It may be because the TD element's 'display' property is inherently set to 'table-cell' rather than 'block'.

In your case, the alternative may be to wrap the contents of the TD in a DIV and apply width and overflow to the DIV.

<td style="border: solid green 1px; width:200px;">
    <div style="width:200px; overflow:hidden;">
        This_is_a_terrible_example_of_thinking_outside_the_box.
    </div>
</td>

There may be some padding or cellpadding issues to deal with, and you're better off removing the inline styles and using external css instead, but this should be a start.

Calculating the difference between two Java date instances

There are many ways you can find the difference between dates & times. One of the simplest ways that I know of would be:

      Calendar calendar1 = Calendar.getInstance();
      Calendar calendar2 = Calendar.getInstance();
      calendar1.set(2012, 04, 02);
      calendar2.set(2012, 04, 04);
      long milsecs1= calendar1.getTimeInMillis();
      long milsecs2 = calendar2.getTimeInMillis();
      long diff = milsecs2 - milsecs1;
      long dsecs = diff / 1000;
      long dminutes = diff / (60 * 1000);
      long dhours = diff / (60 * 60 * 1000);
      long ddays = diff / (24 * 60 * 60 * 1000);

      System.out.println("Your Day Difference="+ddays);

The print statement is just an example - you can format it, the way you like.

}

cvc-elt.1: Cannot find the declaration of element 'MyElement'

I got this same error working in Eclipse with Maven with the additional information

schema_reference.4: Failed to read schema document 'https://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd', because 1) could not find the document; 2) the document could not be read; 3) the root element of the document is not <xsd:schema>.

This was after copying in a new controller and it's interface from a Thymeleaf example. Honestly, no matter how careful I am I still am at a loss to understand how one is expected to figure this out. On a (lucky) guess I right clicked the project, clicked Maven and Update Project which cleared up the issue.

How to detect a docker daemon port

By default, the docker daemon will use the unix socket unix:///var/run/docker.sock (you can check this is the case for you by doing a sudo netstat -tunlp and note that there is no docker daemon process listening on any ports). It's recommended to keep this setting for security reasons but it sounds like Riak requires the daemon to be running on a TCP socket.

To start the docker daemon with a TCP socket that anybody can connect to, use the -H option:

sudo docker -H 0.0.0.0:2375 -d &

Warning: This means machines that can talk to the daemon through that TCP socket can get root access to your host machine.

Postgres manually alter sequence

Use select setval('payments_id_seq', 21, true);

setval contains 3 parameters:

  • 1st parameter is sequence_name
  • 2nd parameter is Next nextval
  • 3rd parameter is optional.

The use of true or false in 3rd parameter of setval is as follows:

SELECT setval('payments_id_seq', 21);           // Next nextval will return 22
SELECT setval('payments_id_seq', 21, true); // Same as above
SELECT setval('payments_id_seq', 21, false); // Next nextval will return 21

The better way to avoid hard-coding of sequence name, next sequence value and to handle empty column table correctly, you can use the below way:

SELECT setval(pg_get_serial_sequence('table_name', 'id'), coalesce(max(id), 0)+1 , false) FROM table_name;

where table_name is the name of the table, id is the primary key of the table

Google API for location, based on user IP address

Here's a script that will use the Google API to acquire the users postal code and populate an input field.

function postalCodeLookup(input) {
    var head= document.getElementsByTagName('head')[0],
        script= document.createElement('script');
    script.src= '//maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?sensor=false';
    head.appendChild(script);
    script.onload = function() {
        if (navigator.geolocation) {
            var a = input,
                fallback = setTimeout(function () {
                    fail('10 seconds expired');
                }, 10000);

            navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(function (pos) {
                clearTimeout(fallback);
                var point = new google.maps.LatLng(pos.coords.latitude, pos.coords.longitude);
                new google.maps.Geocoder().geocode({'latLng': point}, function (res, status) {
                    if (status == google.maps.GeocoderStatus.OK && typeof res[0] !== 'undefined') {
                        var zip = res[0].formatted_address.match(/,\s\w{2}\s(\d{5})/);
                        if (zip) {
                            a.value = zip[1];
                        } else fail('Unable to look-up postal code');
                    } else {
                        fail('Unable to look-up geolocation');
                    }
                });
            }, function (err) {
                fail(err.message);
            });
        } else {
            alert('Unable to find your location.');
        }
        function fail(err) {
            console.log('err', err);
            a.value('Try Again.');
        }
    };
}

You can adjust accordingly to acquire different information. For more info, check out the Google Maps API documentation.

if statements matching multiple values

Using Extension Methods:

public static class ObjectExtension
{
    public static bool In(this object obj, params object[] objects)
    {
        if (objects == null || obj == null)
            return false;
        object found = objects.FirstOrDefault(o => o.GetType().Equals(obj.GetType()) && o.Equals(obj));
        return (found != null);
    }
}

Now you can do this:

string role= "Admin";
if (role.In("Admin", "Director"))
{
    ...
}

Convert Python program to C/C++ code?

Yes. Look at Cython. It does just that: Converts Python to C for speedups.

multiple prints on the same line in Python

Here a 2.7-compatible version derived from the 3.0 version by @Vadim-Zin4uk:

Python 2

import time

for i in range(101):                        # for 0 to 100
    s = str(i) + '%'                        # string for output
    print '{0}\r'.format(s), # just print and flush

    time.sleep(0.2)

For that matter, the 3.0 solution provided looks a little bloated. For example, the backspace method doesn't make use of the integer argument and could probably be done away with altogether.

Python 3

import time

for i in range(101):                        # for 0 to 100
    s = str(i) + '%'                        # string for output
    print('{0}\r'.format(s), end='')        # just print and flush

    time.sleep(0.2)                         # sleep for 200ms

Both have been tested and work.

Amazon S3 - HTTPS/SSL - Is it possible?

This is a response I got from their Premium Services

Hello,

This is actually a issue with the way SSL validates names containing a period, '.', > character. We've documented this behavior here:

http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/BucketRestrictions.html

The only straight-forward fix for this is to use a bucket name that does not contain that character. You might instead use a bucket named 'furniture-retailcatalog-us'. This would allow you use HTTPS with

https://furniture-retailcatalog-us.s3.amazonaws.com/

You could, of course, put a CNAME DNS record to make that more friendly. For example,

images-furniture.retailcatalog.us IN CNAME furniture-retailcatalog-us.s3.amazonaws.com.

Hope that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.

Amazon Web Services

Unfortunately your "friendly" CNAME will cause host name mismatch when validating the certificate, therefore you cannot really use it for a secure connection. A big missing feature of S3 is accepting custom certificates for your domains.

UPDATE 10/2/2012

From @mpoisot:

The link Amazon provided no longer says anything about https. I poked around in the S3 docs and finally found a small note about it on the Virtual Hosting page: http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/VirtualHosting.html

UPDATE 6/17/2013

From @Joseph Lust:

Just got it! Check it out and sign up for an invite: http://aws.amazon.com/cloudfront/custom-ssl-domains

Remove all occurrences of char from string

here is a lambda function which removes all characters passed as string

BiFunction<String,String,String> deleteChars = (fromString, chars) -> {
  StringBuilder buf = new StringBuilder( fromString );
  IntStream.range( 0, buf.length() ).forEach( i -> {
    while( i < buf.length() && chars.indexOf( buf.charAt( i ) ) >= 0 )
      buf.deleteCharAt( i );
  } );
  return( buf.toString() );
};

String str = "TextX XYto modifyZ";
deleteChars.apply( str, "XYZ" ); // –> "Text to modify"

This solution takes into acount that the resulting String – in difference to replace() – never becomes larger than the starting String when removing characters. So it avoids the repeated allocating and copying while appending character-wise to the StringBuilder as replace() does.
Not to mention the pointless generation of Pattern and Matcher instances in replace() that are never needed for removal.
In difference to replace() this solution can delete several characters in one swoop.

how to change default python version?

This is probably desirable for backwards compatibility.

Python3 breaks backwards compatibility, and programs invoking 'python' probably expect python2. You probably have many programs and scripts which you are not even aware of which expect python=python2, and changing this would break those programs and scripts.

The answer you are probably looking for is You should not change this.

You could, however, make a custom alias in your shell. The way you do so depends on the shell, but perhaps you could do alias py=python3

If you are confused about how to start the latest version of python, it is at least the case on Linux that python3 leaves your python2 installation intact (due to the above compatibility reasons); thus you can start python3 with the python3 command.

Difference between Python's Generators and Iterators

Everybody has a really nice and verbose answer with examples and I really appreciate it. I just wanted to give a short few lines answer for people who are still not quite clear conceptually:

If you create your own iterator, it is a little bit involved - you have to create a class and at least implement the iter and the next methods. But what if you don't want to go through this hassle and want to quickly create an iterator. Fortunately, Python provides a short-cut way to defining an iterator. All you need to do is define a function with at least 1 call to yield and now when you call that function it will return "something" which will act like an iterator (you can call next method and use it in a for loop). This something has a name in Python called Generator

Hope that clarifies a bit.

asynchronous vs non-blocking

Synchronous is defined as happening at the same time.

Asynchronous is defined as not happening at the same time.

This is what causes the first confusion. Synchronous is actually what is known as parallel. While asynchronous is sequential, do this, then do that.

Now the whole problem is about modeling an asynchronous behaviour, because you've got some operation that needs the response of another before it can begin. Thus it's a coordination problem, how will you know that you can now start that operation?

The simplest solution is known as blocking.

Blocking is when you simply choose to wait for the other thing to be done and return you a response before moving on to the operation that needed it.

So if you need to put butter on toast, and thus you first need to toast the bred. The way you'd coordinate them is that you'd first toast the bred, then stare endlessly at the toaster until it pops the toast, and then you'd proceed to put butter on them.

It's the simplest solution, and works very well. There's no real reason not to use it, unless you happen to also have other things you need to be doing which don't require coordination with the operations. For example, doing some dishes. Why wait idle staring at the toaster constantly for the toast to pop, when you know it'll take a bit of time, and you could wash a whole dish while it finishes?

That's where two other solutions known respectively as non-blocking and asynchronous come into play.

Non-blocking is when you choose to do other unrelated things while you wait for the operation to be done. Checking back on the availability of the response as you see fit.

So instead of looking at the toaster for it to pop. You go and wash a whole dish. And then you peek at the toaster to see if the toasts have popped. If they havn't, you go wash another dish, checking back at the toaster between each dish. When you see the toasts have popped, you stop washing the dishes, and instead you take the toast and move on to putting butter on them.

Having to constantly check on the toasts can be annoying though, imagine the toaster is in another room. In between dishes you waste your time going to that other room to check on the toast.

Here comes asynchronous.

Asynchronous is when you choose to do other unrelated things while you wait for the operation to be done. Instead of checking on it though, you delegate the work of checking to something else, could be the operation itself or a watcher, and you have that thing notify and possibly interupt you when the response is availaible so you can proceed to the other operation that needed it.

Its a weird terminology. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense, since all these solutions are ways to create asynchronous coordination of dependent tasks. That's why I prefer to call it evented.

So for this one, you decide to upgrade your toaster so it beeps when the toasts are done. You happen to be constantly listening, even while you are doing dishes. On hearing the beep, you queue up in your memory that as soon as you are done washing your current dish, you'll stop and go put the butter on the toast. Or you could choose to interupt the washing of the current dish, and deal with the toast right away.

If you have trouble hearing the beep, you can have your partner watch the toaster for you, and come tell you when the toast is ready. Your partner can itself choose any of the above three strategies to coordinate its task of watching the toaster and telling you when they are ready.

On a final note, it's good to understand that while non-blocking and async (or what I prefer to call evented) do allow you to do other things while you wait, you don't have too. You can choose to constantly loop on checking the status of a non-blocking call, doing nothing else. That's often worse than blocking though (like looking at the toaster, then away, then back at it until its done), so a lot of non-blocking APIs allow you to transition into a blocking mode from it. For evented, you can just wait idle until you are notified. The downside in that case is that adding the notification was complex and potentially costly to begin with. You had to buy a new toaster with beep functionality, or convince your partner to watch it for you.

And one more thing, you need to realize the trade offs all three provide. One is not obviously better than the others. Think of my example. If your toaster is so fast, you won't have time to wash a dish, not even begin washing it, that's how fast your toaster is. Getting started on something else in that case is just a waste of time and effort. Blocking will do. Similarly, if washing a dish will take 10 times longer then the toasting. You have to ask yourself what's more important to get done? The toast might get cold and hard by that time, not worth it, blocking will also do. Or you should pick faster things to do while you wait. There's more obviously, but my answer is already pretty long, my point is you need to think about all that, and the complexities of implementing each to decide if its worth it, and if it'll actually improve your throughput or performance.

Edit:

Even though this is already long, I also want it to be complete, so I'll add two more points.

  1. There also commonly exists a fourth model known as multiplexed. This is when while you wait for one task, you start another, and while you wait for both, you start one more, and so on, until you've got many tasks all started and then, you wait idle, but on all of them. So as soon as any is done, you can proceed with handling its response, and then go back to waiting for the others. It's known as multiplexed, because while you wait, you need to check each task one after the other to see if they are done, ad vitam, until one is. It's a bit of an extension on top of normal non-blocking.

In our example it would be like starting the toaster, then the dishwasher, then the microwave, etc. And then waiting on any of them. Where you'd check the toaster to see if it's done, if not, you'd check the dishwasher, if not, the microwave, and around again.

  1. Even though I believe it to be a big mistake, synchronous is often used to mean one thing at a time. And asynchronous many things at a time. Thus you'll see synchronous blocking and non-blocking used to refer to blocking and non-blocking. And asynchronous blocking and non-blocking used to refer to multiplexed and evented.

I don't really understand how we got there. But when it comes to IO and Computation, synchronous and asynchronous often refer to what is better known as non-overlapped and overlapped. That is, asynchronous means that IO and Computation are overlapped, aka, happening concurrently. While synchronous means they are not, thus happening sequentially. For synchronous non-blocking, that would mean you don't start other IO or Computation, you just busy wait and simulate a blocking call. I wish people stopped misusing syncronous and asynchronous like that. So I'm not encouraging it.

Splitting a continuous variable into equal sized groups

try this:

split(das, cut(das$anim, 3))

if you want to split based on the value of wt, then

library(Hmisc) # cut2
split(das, cut2(das$wt, g=3))

anyway, you can do that by combining cut, cut2 and split.

UPDATED

if you want a group index as an additional column, then

das$group <- cut(das$anim, 3)

if the column should be index like 1, 2, ..., then

das$group <- as.numeric(cut(das$anim, 3))

UPDATED AGAIN

try this:

> das$wt2 <- as.numeric(cut2(das$wt, g=3))
> das

Add CSS box shadow around the whole DIV

Use this below code

 border:2px soild #eee;

 margin: 15px 15px;
 -webkit-box-shadow: 2px 3px 8px #eee;
-moz-box-shadow: 2px 3px 8px #eee;
box-shadow: 2px 3px 8px #eee;

Explanation:-

box-shadow requires you to set the horizontal & vertical offsets, you can then optionally set the blur and colour, you can also choose to have the shadow inset instead of the default outset. Colour can be defined as hex or rgba.

box-shadow : inset/outset h-offset v-offset blur spread color;

Explanation of the values...

inset/outset -- whether the shadow is inside or outside the box. If not specified it will default to outset.

h-offset -- the horizontal offset of the shadow (required value)

v-offset -- the vertical offset of the shadow (required value)

blur -- as it says, the blur of the shadow

spread -- moves the shadow away from the box equally on all sides. A positive value causes the shadow to expand, negative causes it to contract. Though this value isn't often used, it is useful with multiple shadows.

color -- as it says, the color of the shadow

Usage

box-shadow:2px 3px 8px #eee; a gray shadow with a horizontal outset of 2px, vertical of 3px and a blur of 8px

AngularJS performs an OPTIONS HTTP request for a cross-origin resource

If you are using a nodeJS server, you can use this library, it worked fine for me https://github.com/expressjs/cors

var express = require('express')

app.use(cors());

and after you can do an npm update.

If you don't like typing it at the cmd line every time then you could create an alias to do it for you.

How to give spacing between buttons using bootstrap

Adding margins to a button makes it wider so that les buttons fit in the grid system. If only a visual effect is important, then give the button a white border with [style="margin:0px; border:solid white;"] This leaves the button width unaffected.

How do I get the title of the current active window using c#?

See example on how you can do this with full source code here:

How do I use the nohup command without getting nohup.out?

sudo bash -c "nohup /opt/viptel/viptel_bin/log.sh $* &> /dev/null"  &

Redirecting the output of sudo causes sudo to reask for the password, thus an awkward mechanism is needed to do this variant.

Java: Check the date format of current string is according to required format or not

What are .a and .so files?

.a are static libraries. If you use code stored inside them, it's taken from them and embedded into your own binary. In Visual Studio, these would be .lib files.

.so are dynamic libraries. If you use code stored inside them, it's not taken and embedded into your own binary. Instead it's just referenced, so the binary will depend on them and the code from the so file is added/loaded at runtime. In Visual Studio/Windows these would be .dll files (with small .lib files containing linking information).

How do you declare an object array in Java?

Like this

Vehicle[] car = new Vehicle[10];

Failed Apache2 start, no error log

in the apache virtualhost you have to define the path to the error log file. when apache2 start for the first time it will create it automatically.

for example ErrorLog "/var/www/www.localhost.com/log-apache2/error.log" in the apache virtualhost..

How do I extract data from a DataTable?

You can set the datatable as a datasource to many elements.

For eg

gridView

repeater

datalist

etc etc

If you need to extract data from each row then you can use

table.rows[rowindex][columnindex]

or

if you know the column name

table.rows[rowindex][columnname]

If you need to iterate the table then you can either use a for loop or a foreach loop like

for ( int i = 0; i < table.rows.length; i ++ )
{
    string name = table.rows[i]["columnname"].ToString();
}

foreach ( DataRow dr in table.Rows )
{
    string name = dr["columnname"].ToString();
}

Concept of void pointer in C programming

This won't work, yet void * can help a lot in defining generic pointer to functions and passing it as an argument to another function (similar to callback in Java) or define it a structure similar to oop.

The type initializer for 'MyClass' threw an exception

One other thing to check when these initialize errors are thrown would be to check if the target .NET version is installed on the server. You can right click the project and see what .NET version the application is targeting.

Security of REST authentication schemes

If you require the hash of the body as one of the parameters in the URL and that URL is signed via a private key, then a man-in-the-middle attack would only be able to replace the body with content that would generate the same hash. Easy to do with MD5 hash values now at least and when SHA-1 is broken, well, you get the picture.

To secure the body from tampering, you would need to require a signature of the body, which a man-in-the-middle attack would be less likely to be able to break since they wouldn't know the private key that generates the signature.

What does 'foo' really mean?

In my opinion every programmer has his or her own "words" that is used every time you need an arbitrary word when programming. For some people it's the first words from a childs song, for other it's names and for other its something completely different. Now for the programmer community there are these "words" as well, and these words are 'foo' and 'bar'. The use of this is that if you have to communicate publicly about programming you don't have to say that you would use arbitratry words, you would simply write 'foo' or 'bar' and every programmer knows that this is just arbitrary words.

android - save image into gallery

I come here with the same doubt but for Xamarin for Android, I have used the Sigrist answer to do this method after save my file:

private void UpdateGallery()
{
    Intent mediaScanIntent = new Intent(Intent.ActionMediaScannerScanFile);
    Java.IO.File file = new Java.IO.File(_path);
    Android.Net.Uri contentUri = Android.Net.Uri.FromFile(file);
    mediaScanIntent.SetData(contentUri);
    Application.Context.SendBroadcast(mediaScanIntent);
}

and it solved my problem, Thx Sigrist. I put it here becouse i did not found an answare about this for Xamarin and i hope it can help other people.

Get day of week in SQL Server 2005/2008

If you don't want to depend on @@DATEFIRST or use DATEPART(weekday, DateColumn), just calculate the day of the week yourself.

For Monday based weeks (Europe) simplest is:

SELECT DATEDIFF(day, '17530101', DateColumn) % 7 + 1 AS MondayBasedDay

For Sunday based weeks (America) use:

SELECT DATEDIFF(day, '17530107', DateColumn) % 7 + 1 AS SundayBasedDay

This return the weekday number (1 to 7) ever since January 1st respectively 7th, 1753.

Initializing a two dimensional std::vector

I think the easiest way to make it done is :

std::vector<std::vector<int>>v(10,std::vector<int>(11,100));

10 is the size of the outer or global vector, which is the main one, and 11 is the size of inner vector of type int, and initial values are initialized to 100! That's my first help on stack, i think it helps someone.

How much should a function trust another function

That's where constructors come into play. If you have a default constructor (eg. with no parameters) that always creates a new Map, then you're sure that every instance of this class will always have an already instantiated Map.

java: How can I do dynamic casting of a variable from one type to another?

Yes it is possible using Reflection

Object something = "something";
String theType = "java.lang.String";
Class<?> theClass = Class.forName(theType);
Object obj = theClass.cast(something);

but that doesn't make much sense since the resulting object must be saved in a variable of Object type. If you need the variable be of a given class, you can just cast to that class.

If you want to obtain a given class, Number for example:

Object something = new Integer(123);
String theType = "java.lang.Number";
Class<? extends Number> theClass = Class.forName(theType).asSubclass(Number.class);
Number obj = theClass.cast(something);

but there is still no point doing it so, you could just cast to Number.

Casting of an object does NOT change anything; it is just the way the compiler treats it.
The only reason to do something like that is to check if the object is an instance of the given class or of any subclass of it, but that would be better done using instanceof or Class.isInstance().

Update

according your last update the real problem is that you have an Integer in your HashMap that should be assigned to a Double. What you can do in this case, is check the type of the field and use the xxxValue() methods of Number

...
Field f =  this.getClass().getField(entry.getKey());
Object value = entry.getValue();
if (Integer.class.isAssignableFrom(f.getType())) {
    value = Integer.valueOf(((Number) entry.getValue()).intValue());
} else if (Double.class.isAssignableFrom(f.getType())) {
    value = Double.valueOf(((Number) entry.getValue()).doubleValue());
} // other cases as needed (Long, Float, ...)
f.set(this, value);
...

(not sure if I like the idea of having the wrong type in the Map)

How to change Status Bar text color in iOS

This is documented in the iOS 7 UI Transition Guide, which you need an Apple developer ID to access directly. The relevant excerpt:

Because the status bar is transparent, the view behind it shows through. [...] Use a UIStatusBarStyle constant to specify whether the statusbar content should be dark or light:

UIStatusBarStyleDefault displays dark content. [...]

UIStatusBarStyleLightContent displays light content. Use when dark content is behind the status bar.

Also possibly of interest:

In iOS 7, you can control the style of the status bar from an individual vew controller and change it while the app runs. To opt in to this behavior, add the UIViewControllerBasedStatusBarAppearance key to an app's Info.plist file and give it the value YES.

I'd definitely recommend having a look through the document, which, again, you can access with your Apple developer ID.

Get Country of IP Address with PHP

There are various web APIs that will do this for you. Here's an example using my service, http://ipinfo.io:

$ip = $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'];
$details = json_decode(file_get_contents("http://ipinfo.io/{$ip}"));
echo $details->country; // -> "US"

Web APIs are a nice quick and easy solution, but if you need to do a lot of lookups then having an IP -> country database on your own machine is a better solution. MaxMind offer a free database that you can use with various PHP libraries, including GeoIP.

How should I load files into my Java application?

What are you loading the files for - configuration or data (like an input file) or as a resource?

  • If as a resource, follow the suggestion and example given by Will and Justin
  • If configuration, then you can use a ResourceBundle or Spring (if your configuration is more complex).
  • If you need to read a file in order to process the data inside, this code snippet may help BufferedReader file = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(filename)) and then read each line of the file using file.readLine(); Don't forget to close the file.

Insert data into table with result from another select query

If table_2 is empty, then try the following insert statement:

insert into table_2 (itemid,location1)
select itemid,quantity from table_1 where locationid=1

update table_2 set location1=
(select quantity from table_1 where locationid=1 and table_1.itemid = table_2.itemid)

mysql server port number

If you specify 'localhost' the client libs default to using the filesystem system socket on a Unix system - trying the mysql_default_socket value from php.ini (if set) then the my.cnf value.

If you want to use a network port (which is a wee bit slower) then try specifying 127.0.0.1 or a physical interface asociated with the machine.

Convert an image to grayscale

To summarize a few items here: There are some pixel-by-pixel options that, while being simple just aren't fast.

@Luis' comment linking to: (archived) https://web.archive.org/web/20110827032809/http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/csharp-tutorial-convert-a-color-image-to-grayscale is superb.

He runs through three different options and includes timings for each.

REST API using POST instead of GET

It is nice that REST brings meaning to HTTP verbs (as they defined) but I prefer to agree with Scott Peal.

Here is also item from WIKI's extended explanation on POST request:

There are times when HTTP GET is less suitable even for data retrieval. An example of this is when a great deal of data would need to be specified in the URL. Browsers and web servers can have limits on the length of the URL that they will handle without truncation or error. Percent-encoding of reserved characters in URLs and query strings can significantly increase their length, and while Apache HTTP Server can handle up to 4,000 characters in a URL,[5] Microsoft Internet Explorer is limited to 2,048 characters in any URL.[6] Equally, HTTP GET should not be used where sensitive information, such as user names and passwords, have to be submitted along with other data for the request to complete. Even if HTTPS is used, preventing the data from being intercepted in transit, the browser history and the web server's logs will likely contain the full URL in plaintext, which may be exposed if either system is hacked. In these cases, HTTP POST should be used.[7]

I could only suggest to REST team to consider more secure use of HTTP protocol to avoid making consumers struggle with non-secure "good practice".

How to sync with a remote Git repository?

You have to add the original repo as an upstream.

Javascript Regular Expression Remove Spaces

This works just as well: http://jsfiddle.net/maniator/ge59E/3/

var reg = new RegExp(" ","g"); //<< just look for a space.

instanceof Vs getClass( )

Do you want to match a class exactly, e.g. only matching FileInputStream instead of any subclass of FileInputStream? If so, use getClass() and ==. I would typically do this in an equals, so that an instance of X isn't deemed equal to an instance of a subclass of X - otherwise you can get into tricky symmetry problems. On the other hand, that's more usually useful for comparing that two objects are of the same class than of one specific class.

Otherwise, use instanceof. Note that with getClass() you will need to ensure you have a non-null reference to start with, or you'll get a NullPointerException, whereas instanceof will just return false if the first operand is null.

Personally I'd say instanceof is more idiomatic - but using either of them extensively is a design smell in most cases.

How might I find the largest number contained in a JavaScript array?

Use:

var arr = [1, 2, 3, 4];

var largest = arr.reduce(function(x,y) {
    return (x > y) ? x : y;
});

console.log(largest);

How do I pass parameters into a PHP script through a webpage?

Presumably you're passing the arguments in on the command line as follows:

php /path/to/wwwpublic/path/to/script.php arg1 arg2

... and then accessing them in the script thusly:

<?php
// $argv[0] is '/path/to/wwwpublic/path/to/script.php'
$argument1 = $argv[1];
$argument2 = $argv[2];
?>

What you need to be doing when passing arguments through HTTP (accessing the script over the web) is using the query string and access them through the $_GET superglobal:

Go to http://yourdomain.com/path/to/script.php?argument1=arg1&argument2=arg2

... and access:

<?php
$argument1 = $_GET['argument1'];
$argument2 = $_GET['argument2'];
?>

If you want the script to run regardless of where you call it from (command line or from the browser) you'll want something like the following:

EDIT: as pointed out by Cthulhu in the comments, the most direct way to test which environment you're executing in is to use the PHP_SAPI constant. I've updated the code accordingly:

<?php
if (PHP_SAPI === 'cli') {
    $argument1 = $argv[1];
    $argument2 = $argv[2];
}
else {
    $argument1 = $_GET['argument1'];
    $argument2 = $_GET['argument2'];
}
?>

how to access master page control from content page

You cannot use var in a field, only on local variables.

But even this won't work:

Site master = Master as Site;

Because you cannot use this in a field and Master as Site is the same as this.Master as Site. So just initialize the field from Page_Init when the page is fully initialized and you can use this:

Site master = null;

protected void Page_Init(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    master = this.Master as Site;
}

No.. It is not proper way. Refer the steps,

For Classpath reference: Right click on project in Eclipse -> Buildpath -> Configure Build path -> Java Build Path (left Pane) -> Libraries(Tab) -> Add External Jars -> Select your jar and select OK.

For Deployment Assembly: Right click on WAR in eclipse-> Buildpath -> Configure Build path -> Deployment Assembly (left Pane) -> Add -> External file system -> Add -> Select your jar -> Add -> Finish.

This is the proper way! Don't forget to remove environment variable. It is not required now.

Try this. Surely it will work. Try to use Maven, it will simplify you task.

Filename too long in Git for Windows

In Windows, you can follow these steps which worked for me.

  1. Open your cmd or git bash as an administrator
  1. Give the following command either from cmd or git bash which you ran above as an administrator
git config --system core.longpaths true
  1. This will allow accessing long paths globally

  2. And now you can clone the repository with no issues with long paths

Ran through the same problem, and this is the solution I found: Create a new folder (for instance, tmp) under /home $ cd /home make postgres the owner of that folder $ chown -R postgres:postgres tmp copy in tmp the files you want to write into the database, and make sure they also are owned by postgres. That's it. You should be in business after that.

How to make Java Set?

Like this:

import java.util.*;
Set<Integer> a = new HashSet<Integer>();
a.add( 1);
a.add( 2);
a.add( 3);

Or adding from an Array/ or multiple literals; wrap to a list, first.

Integer[] array = new Integer[]{ 1, 4, 5};
Set<Integer> b = new HashSet<Integer>();
b.addAll( Arrays.asList( b));         // from an array variable
b.addAll( Arrays.asList( 8, 9, 10));  // from literals

To get the intersection:

// copies all from A; then removes those not in B.
Set<Integer> r = new HashSet( a);
r.retainAll( b);
// and print;   r.toString() implied.
System.out.println("A intersect B="+r);

Hope this answer helps. Vote for it!

update listview dynamically with adapter

I created a method just for that. I use it any time I need to manually update a ListView. Hopefully this gives you an idea of how to implement your own

public static void UpdateListView(List<SomeObject> SomeObjects, ListView ListVw)
{
    if(ListVw != null)
    {
        final YourAdapter adapter = (YourAdapter) ListVw.getAdapter();

        //You'll have to create this method in your adapter class. It's a simple setter.
        adapter.SetList(SomeObjects);

        adapter.notifyDataSetChanged();
    }
}

I'm using an adapter that inherites from BaseAdapter. Should work for any other type of adapter.

Store a closure as a variable in Swift

For me following was working:

var completionHandler:((Float)->Void)!

How to get a div to resize its height to fit container?

Unfortunately, there is no fool-proof way of achieving this. A block will only expand to the height of its container if it is not floated. Floated blocks are considered outside of the document flow.

One way to do the following without using JavaScript is via a technique called Faux-Columns.

It basically involves applying a background-image to the parent elements of the floated elements which makes you believe that the two elements are the same height.

Is it possible to set async:false to $.getJSON call

In my case, Jay D is right. I have to add this before the call.

$.ajaxSetup({
    async: false
});

In my previous code, I have this:

var jsonData= (function() {
    var result;
    $.ajax({
        type:'GET',
        url:'data.txt',
        dataType:'json',
        async:false,
        success:function(data){
            result = data;
        }
    });
    return result;
})();
alert(JSON.stringify(jsonData));

It works find. Then I change to

var jsonData= (function() {
    var result;
    $.getJSON('data.txt', {}, function(data){
      result = data;
    });
    return result;
})();
alert(JSON.stringify(jsonData));

The alert is undefined.

If I add those three lines, the alert shows the data again.

$.ajaxSetup({
    async: false
});
var jsonData= (function() {
    var result;
    $.getJSON('data.txt', {}, function(data){
      result = data;
    });
    return result;
})();
alert(JSON.stringify(jsonData));

How to enter command with password for git pull?

Doesn't answer the question directly, but I found this question when searching for a way to, basically, not re-enter the password every single time I pull on a remote server.

Well, git allows you to cache your credentials for a finite amount of time. It's customizable in git config and this page explains it very well:

https://help.github.com/articles/caching-your-github-password-in-git/#platform-linux

In a terminal, run:

$ git config --global credential.helper cache
# Set git to use the credential memory cache

To customize the cache timeout, you can do:

$ git config --global credential.helper 'cache --timeout=3600'
# Set the cache to timeout after 1 hour (setting is in seconds)

Your credentials will then be stored in-memory for the requested amount of time.

Check if all values in list are greater than a certain number

 a = [[a, 2], [b, 3], [c, 4], [d, 5], [a, 1], [b, 6], [e, 7], [h, 8]]

I need this from above one

 a = [[a, 3], [b, 9], [c, 4], [d, 5], [e, 7], [h, 8]]
a.append([0, 0])
for i in range(len(a)):
     for j in range(i + 1, len(a) - 1):
            if a[i][0] == a[j][0]:
                    a[i][1] += a[j][1]
                    del a[j]
a.pop()

Android Fragment handle back button press

if you overide the onKey method for the fragment view you're gonna need :

    view.setFocusableInTouchMode(true);
    view.requestFocus();
    view.setOnKeyListener(new View.OnKeyListener() {
            @Override
            public boolean onKey(View v, int keyCode, KeyEvent event) {
                Log.i(tag, "keyCode: " + keyCode);
                if( keyCode == KeyEvent.KEYCODE_BACK && event.getAction() == KeyEvent.ACTION_UP) {
                    Log.i(tag, "onKey Back listener is working!!!");
                    getFragmentManager().popBackStack(null, FragmentManager.POP_BACK_STACK_INCLUSIVE);
                    return true;
                }
                return false;
            }
        });

How to tell if browser/tab is active

Using jQuery:

    window.isActive = true;
    $(window).focus(function() { this.isActive = true; });
    $(window).blur(function() { this.isActive = false; });
    showIsActive();

How to list records with date from the last 10 days?

I would check datatypes.

current_date has "date" datatype, 10 is a number, and Table.date - you need to look at your table.

Set content of HTML <span> with Javascript

To do it without using a JavaScript library such as jQuery, you'd do it like this:

var span = document.getElementById("myspan"),
    text = document.createTextNode(''+intValue);
span.innerHTML = ''; // clear existing
span.appendChild(text);

If you do want to use jQuery, it's just this:

$("#myspan").text(''+intValue);

wait() or sleep() function in jquery?

That'd be .delay().

http://api.jquery.com/delay/

If you are doing AJAX stuff tho, you really shouldn't just auto write "done" you should really wait for a response and see if it's actually done.
