Why is "npm install" really slow?

I had similar problems. I was also confused by some solutions leaving me with different versions displaying for different users. If you have any problems at all, I would first check every account your using any implementation of node

Finally, this solution appears to solve this issue 100%, giving me the confidence that my versions were universal no matter what user privileges I wanted to use:

    sudo yum update

    sudo yum install build-essential checkinstall libssl-dev

    curl -o- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.35.1/install.sh | bash

    (sudo) nvm --version

    (sudo) nvm ls-remote

If you're still having a problem, next try looking inside your /usr/local/bin directory. If you find either a large binary document named node or a folder named npm, delete them.

    rm /usr/local/bin/node

    rm -r /usr/local/bin/npm

Personally, before I deleted those, two of my user accounts were using the latest version of node/npm installed correctly via nvm, while a third account of mine remained stubborn by still using a far older installation of both node and npm apparently located inside my /usr/local/bin/ directory. As soon as I deleted both of them with the two above commands, that problematic user account implicitly began running the correct installation, having all three accounts mutually the intended versions.

You can get this error if you have invalid 9-patch files. If there is anything apart from black and transparent in the border pixels you will get this error. The easiest way of fixing this is to open it up in Android Studio and modify the borders. Just adding and removing one pixel is enough.

It's worth noting that you won't see the bad pixels in AS, as the editor sets anything not black to transparent, but you will need to modify the file for it to save these changes.

ORA-00907: missing right parenthesis

I would recommend separating out all of the foreign-key constraints from your CREATE TABLE statements. Create all the tables first without FK constraints, and then create all the FK constraints once you have created the tables.

You can add an FK constraint to a table using SQL like the following:

ALTER TABLE orders ADD CONSTRAINT orders_FK
  FOREIGN KEY (m_p_unique_id) REFERENCES library (m_p_unique_id);

In particular, your formats and library tables both have foreign-key constraints on one another. The two CREATE TABLE statements to create these two tables can never run successfully, as each will only work when the other table has already been created.

Separating out the constraint creation allows you to create tables with FK constraints on one another. Also, if you have an error with a constraint, only that constraint fails to be created. At present, because you have errors in the constraints in your CREATE TABLE statements, then entire table creation fails and you get various knock-on errors because FK constraints may depend on these tables that failed to create.

Visual Studio 2013 License Product Key

I solved this, without having to completely reinstall Visual Studio 2013.

For those who may come across this in the future, the following steps worked for me:

  1. Run the ISO (or vs_professional.exe).
  2. If you get the error below, you need to update the Windows Registry to trick the installer into thinking you still have the base version. If you don't get this error, skip to step 3 "The product version that you are trying to set up is earlier than the version already installed on this computer."

    • Click the link for 'examine the log file' and look near the bottom of the log, for this line: Detected related bundle ... operation: Downgrade

    • open regedit.exe and do an Edit > Find... for that GUID. In my case it was {6dff50d0-3bc3-4a92-b724-bf6d6a99de4f}. This was found in:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall{6dff50d0-3bc3-4a92-b724-bf6d6a99de4f}

    • Edit the BundleVersion value and change it to a lower version. I changed mine from 12.0.21005.13 to 12.0.21000.13: BundleVersion for Visual Studio lower the version for BundleVersion

    • Exit the registry

  3. Run the ISO (or vs_professional.exe) again. If it has a repair button like the image below, you can skip to step 4.

    • Otherwise you have to let the installer fix the registry. I did this by "installing" at least one feature, even though I think I already had all features (they were not detected). This took about 20 minutes.
  4. Run the ISO (or vs_professional.exe) again. This time repair should be visible.

  5. Click Repair and let it update your installation and apply its embedded license key. This took about 20 minutes.


Now when you run Visual Studio 2013, it should indicate that a license key was applied, under Help > Register Product:

I convert here binary data to base64 (for bigger data conversion use this) - during downloading browser decode it automatically and save raw data in file. 2020.06.14 I upgrade Chrome to 83.0 and above SO snippet stop working (probably due to sandbox security restrictions) - but JSFiddle version works - here

Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL server error log for potential causes

This post is high up when you google that error message, which I got when installing security patch KB4505224 on SQL Server 2017 Express i.e. None of the above worked for me, but did consume several hours trying.

The solution for me, partly from here was:

  1. uninstall SQL Server
  2. in Regional Settings / Management / System Locale, "Beta: UTF-8 support" should be OFF
  3. re-install SQL Server
  4. Let Windows install the patch.

And all was well.

Export to CSV using jQuery and html

From what I understand, you have your data on a table and you want to create the CSV from that data. However, you have problem creating the CSV.

My thoughts would be to iterate and parse the contents of the table and generate a string from the parsed data. You can check How to convert JSON to CSV format and store in a variable for an example. You are using jQuery in your example so that would not count as an external plugin. Then, you just have to serve the resulting string using window.open and use application/octetstream as suggested.

Hunk #1 FAILED at 1. What's that mean?

It is an error generated by patch. If you would open the .patch file, you'd see that it's organized in a bunch of segments, so-called "hunks". Every hunk identifies corresponding pieces of code (by line numbers) in the old and new version, the differences between those pieces of code, and similarities between them (the "context").

A hunk might fail if the similarities of a hunk don't match what's in the original file. When you see this error, it is almost always because you're using a patch for the wrong version of the code you're patching. There are a few ways to work around this:

  • Get an updated version of libdvdnav that already includes the patch (best option).
  • Get a .patch file for the version of libdvdnav you're patching.
  • Patch manually. For every hunk in the patch, try to locate the corresponding file and lines in libdvdnav, and correct them according to the instructions in the patch.
  • Take the version of libdvdnav that's closer to whatever version the .patch file was intended for (probably a bad idea).

I understand what you're trying to do, because I answered your question yesterday about determining which div is visible. :)
The whichIsVisible() function returns an actual jQuery object, because I thought that would be more programmatically useful. If you want to use this function for debugging purposes, you can just do something like this:

That said, you really should be using a proper debugger rather than alert() if you're trying to debug a problem. If you're using Firefox, Firebug is excellent. If you're using IE8, Safari, or Chrome, they have built-in debuggers.

That is the release version of RHEL, or at least the release of RHEL from which the package supplying /etc/redhat-release was installed. A file like that is probably the closest you can come; you could also look at /etc/lsb-release.

It is theoretically possible to have packages installed from a mix of versions (e.g. upgrading part of the system to 5.5 while leaving other parts at 5.4), so if you depend on the versions of specific components you will need to check for those individually.

How to Load RSA Private Key From File

Two things. First, you must base64 decode the mykey.pem file yourself. Second, the openssl private key format is specified in PKCS#1 as the RSAPrivateKey ASN.1 structure. It is not compatible with java's PKCS8EncodedKeySpec, which is based on the SubjectPublicKeyInfo ASN.1 structure. If you are willing to use the bouncycastle library you can use a few classes in the bouncycastle provider and bouncycastle PKIX libraries to make quick work of this.

How to remove/delete a large file from commit history in Git repository?

It didn't work, because I like to rename and move things a lot. So some big file were in folders that have been renamed, and I think the gc couldn't delete the reference to those files because of reference in tree objects pointing to those file. My ultimate solution to really kill it was to:

My repo (the .git) changed from 32MB to 388KB, that even filter-branch couldn't clean.

VirtualBox and vmdk vmx files

VMDK/VMX are VMWare file formats but you can use it with VirtualBox:

  1. Create a new Virtual Machine and when asks for a hard disk choose "Use an existing hard disk"
  2. Click on the "button with folder and green arrow image on the combo box right" which opens Virtual Media Manager, it looks like this (you can open it directly pressing CTRL+D on main window or in File > Virtual Media Manager menu)...
  3. Then you can add the VMDK/VMX hard disk image and setup it for your virtual machine :)

If you just need a selector for Javascript purposes (like I did), you might just want to use a href attribute instead of a class or id:

Just do this:

Markdown will not ignore or remove the href attribute like it does with classes and ids.

Specify path to node_modules in package.json

I'm not sure if this is what you had in mind, but I ended up on this question because I was unable to install node_modules inside my project dir as it was mounted on a filesystem that did not support symlinks (a VM "shared" folder).

I found the following workaround:

  1. Copy the package.json file to a temp folder on a different filesystem
  2. Run npm install there
  3. Copy the resulting node_modules directory back into the project dir, using cp -r --dereference to expand symlinks into copies.

I hope this helps someone else who ends up on this question when looking for a way to move node_modules to a different filesystem.

There is another workaround, which I found on the github issue that @Charminbear linked to, but this doesn't work with grunt because it does not support NODE_PATH as per https://github.com/browserify/resolve/issues/136:

lets say you have /media/sf_shared and you can't install symlinks in there, which means you can't actually npm install from /media/sf_shared/myproject because some modules use symlinks.

  • $ mkdir /home/dan/myproject && cd /home/dan/myproject
  • $ ln -s /media/sf_shared/myproject/package.json (you can symlink in this direction, just can't create one inside of /media/sf_shared)
  • $ npm install
  • $ cd /media/sf_shared/myproject
  • $ NODE_PATH=/home/dan/myproject/node_modules node index.js

Why is my asynchronous function returning Promise { <pending> } instead of a value?

The promise will always log pending as long as its results are not resolved yet. You must call .then on the promise to capture the results regardless of the promise state (resolved or still pending):

Promises are forward direction only; You can only resolve them once. The resolved value of a Promise is passed to its .then or .catch methods.

Details

According to the Promises/A+ spec:

The promise resolution procedure is an abstract operation taking as input a promise and a value, which we denote as [[Resolve]](promise, x). If x is a thenable, it attempts to make promise adopt the state of x, under the assumption that x behaves at least somewhat like a promise. Otherwise, it fulfills promise with the value x.

This treatment of thenables allows promise implementations to interoperate, as long as they expose a Promises/A+-compliant then method. It also allows Promises/A+ implementations to “assimilate” nonconformant implementations with reasonable then methods.

This spec is a little hard to parse, so let's break it down. The rule is:

If the function in the .then handler returns a value, then the Promise resolves with that value. If the handler returns another Promise, then the original Promise resolves with the resolved value of the chained Promise. The next .then handler will always contain the resolved value of the chained promise returned in the preceding .then.

The way it actually works is described below in more detail:

1. The return of the .then function will be the resolved value of the promise.

I find larger images start to produce lag around 300% zoom even with all rendering hints set to optimize for speed over quality.

Java heap terminology: young, old and permanent generations?

Memory in SunHotSpot JVM is organized into three generations: young generation, old generation and permanent generation.

  • Young Generation : the newly created objects are allocated to the young gen.
  • Old Generation : If the new object requests for a larger heap space, it gets allocated directly into the old gen. Also objects which have survived a few GC cycles gets promoted to the old gen i.e long lived objects house in old gen.
  • Permanent Generation : The permanent generation holds objects that the JVM finds convenient to have the garbage collector manage, such as objects describing classes and methods, as well as the classes and methods themselves.

FYI: The permanent gen is not considered a part of the Java heap.

How does the three generations interact/relate to each other? Objects(except the large ones) are first allocated to the young generation. If an object remain alive after x no. of garbage collection cycles it gets promoted to the old/tenured gen. Hence we can say that the young gen contains the short lived objects while the old gen contains the objects having a long life. The permanent gen does not interact with the other two generations.

Could not load file or assembly 'EntityFramework' after downgrading EF 5.0.0.0 --> 4.3.1.0

After failed attempts to find references to EntityFramework in repositories.config and elsewhere, I stumbled upon a reference in Web.config as I was editing it to help with my diagnosis.

The bindingRedirect referenced 5.0.0.0 which was no longer installed and this appeared to be the source of the exception. Honestly, I did not add this reference to Web.config and, after trying to duplicate the error in a separate project, discovered that it is not added by the NuGet package installer so, I don't know why it was there but something added it.

Cannot import the keyfile 'blah.pfx' - error 'The keyfile may be password protected'

Unfortunately, no approached mentioned here worked for me. I have to register couple PFX in a docker container and I need to pass the password via command line.

So I re-developed the sn.exe -i <infile> <container> command in C# using the RSACryptoServiceProvider. The source and the app are on GitHub in the SnInstallPfx project.

The SnInstallPfx app accepts a PFX key and its password. It computes the key container name (VS_KEY_*) automatically (borrowed from MSBuild source code) and installs it to the strong name CSP.

Usage:

Is it safe to store a JWT in localStorage with ReactJS?

Localstorage is designed to be accessible by javascript, so it doesn't provide any XSS protection. As mentioned in other answers, there is a bunch of possible ways to do an XSS attack, from which localstorage is not protected by default.

However, cookies have security flags which protect from XSS and CSRF attacks. HttpOnly flag prevents client side javascript from accessing the cookie, Secure flag only allows the browser to transfer the cookie through ssl, and SameSite flag ensures that the cookie is sent only to the origin. Although I just checked and SameSite is currently supported only in Opera and Chrome, so to protect from CSRF it's better to use other strategies. For example, sending an encrypted token in another cookie with some public user data.

So cookies are a more secure choice for storing authentication data.

Android TabLayout Android Design

I had to collect information from various sources to put together a functioning TabLayout. The following is presented as a complete use case that can be modified as needed.

Make sure the module build.gradle file contains a dependency on com.android.support:design.

Predefined type 'System.ValueTuple´2´ is not defined or imported

I would not advise adding ValueTuple as a package reference to the .net Framework projects. As you know this assembly is available from 4.7 .NET Framework.

There can be certain situations when your project will try to include at all costs ValueTuple from .NET Framework folder instead of package folder and it can cause some assembly not found errors.

We had this problem today in company. We had solution with 2 projects (I oversimplify that) :

  • Lib
  • Web

Lib was including ValueTuple and Web was using Lib. It turned out that by some unknown reason Web when trying to resolve path to ValueTuple was having HintPath into .NET Framework directory and was taking incorrect version. Our application was crashing because of that. ValueTuple was not defined in .csproj of Web nor HintPath for that assembly. The problem was very weird. Normally it would copy the assembly from package folder. This time was not normal.

For me it is always risk to add System.* package references. They are often like time-bomb. They are fine at start and they can explode in your face in the worst moment. My rule of thumb: Do not use System.* Nuget package for .NET Framework if there is no real need for them.

We resolved our problem by adding manually ValueTuple into .csproj file inside Web project.

Difference between HashSet and HashMap?

It's really a shame that both their names start with Hash. That's the least important part of them. The important parts come after the Hash - the Set and Map, as others have pointed out. What they are, respectively, are a Set - an unordered collection - and a Map - a collection with keyed access. They happen to be implemented with hashes - that's where the names come from - but their essence is hidden behind that part of their names.

Don't be confused by their names; they are deeply different things.

Which is faster: Stack allocation or Heap allocation

Remark that the considerations are typically not about speed and performance when choosing stack versus heap allocation. The stack acts like a stack, which means it is well suited for pushing blocks and popping them again, last in, first out. Execution of procedures is also stack-like, last procedure entered is first to be exited. In most programming languages, all the variables needed in a procedure will only be visible during the procedure's execution, thus they are pushed upon entering a procedure and popped off the stack upon exit or return.

Now for an example where the stack cannot be used:

If you allocate some memory in procedure S and put it on the stack and then exit S, the allocated data will be popped off the stack. The content might still be there if the stack pointer is just moved up without clearing the data beneath it, but if you start allocating new data on the stack, the pointer x might actually point to that new data instead.

Computing cross-correlation function?

For 1D array, numpy.correlate is faster than scipy.signal.correlate, under different sizes, I see a consistent 5x peformance gain using numpy.correlate. When two arrays are of similar size (the bright line connecting the diagonal), the performance difference is even more outstanding (50x +).

Changing Background Image with CSS3 Animations

The linear timing function will animate the defined properties linearly. For the background-image it seems to have this fade/resize effect while changing the frames of you animation (not sure if it is standard behavior, I would go with @Chukie B's approach).

If you use the steps function, it will animate discretely. See the timing function documentation on MDN for more detail. For you case, do like this:

Using a separate thread to display a simple please wait message is overkill especially if you don't have much experience with threading.

A much simpler approach is to create a "Please wait" form and display it as a mode-less window just before the slow loading form. Once the main form has finished loading, hide the please wait form.

In this way you are using just the one main UI thread to firstly display the please wait form and then load your main form.

The only limitation to this approach is that your please wait form cannot be animated (such as a animated GIF) because the thread is busy loading your main form.

I had the same problem and it turned out that in addition to specifying the encoding in the Filter

PHP session handling errors

You can fix the issue with the following steps:

  1. Verify the folder exists with sudo cd /var/lib/php/session. If it does not exist then sudo mkdir /var/lib/php/session or double check the logs to make sure you have the correct path.
  2. Give the folder full read and write permissions with sudo chmod 666 /var/lib/php/session.

Rerun you script and it should be working fine, however, it's not recommended to leave the folder with full permissions. For security, files and folders should only have the minimum permissions required. The following steps will fix that:

  1. You should already be in the session folder so just run sudo ls -l to find out the owner of the session file.
  2. Set the correct owner of the session folder with sudo chown user /var/lib/php/session.
  3. Give just the owner full read and write permissions with sudo chmod 600 /var/lib/php/session.

I don't think Bass's answer is correct. Why touch the row margins? They have a negative margin to offset the column padding for the columns on the edge of the row. Messing with this will break any nested rows.

The answer is simple, just make the container padding equal to the gutter size:

If you want to update a single gem to a specific version:

  1. change the version of the gem in the Gemfile
  2. bundle update

Cannot GET / Nodejs Error

Have you checked your folder structure? It seems to me like Express can't find your root directory, which should be a a folder named "site" right under your default directory. Here is how it should look like, according to the tutorial:

site/
  css/
  img/
  js/
  index.html
package.json

For example on my machine, I started getting the same error as you when I renamed my "site" folder as something else. So I would suggest you check that you have the index.html page inside a "site" folder that sits on the same path as your server.js file.

How to check if an object is a certain type

Some more details in relation with the response from Cody Gray. As it took me some time to digest it I though it might be usefull to others.

First, some definitions:

  1. There are TypeNames, which are string representations of the type of an object, interface, etc. For example, Bar is a TypeName in Public Class Bar, or in Dim Foo as Bar. TypeNames could be seen as "labels" used in the code to tell the compiler which type definition to look for in a dictionary where all available types would be described.
  2. There are System.Type objects which contain a value. This value indicates a type; just like a String would take some text or an Int would take a number, except we are storing types instead of text or numbers. Type objects contain the type definitions, as well as its corresponding TypeName.

Second, the theory:

  1. Foo.GetType() returns a Type object which contains the type for the variable Foo. In other words, it tells you what Foo is an instance of.
  2. GetType(Bar) returns a Type object which contains the type for the TypeName Bar.
  3. In some instances, the type an object has been Cast to is different from the type an object was first instantiated from. In the following example, MyObj is an Integer cast into an Object:

    Dim MyVal As Integer = 42 Dim MyObj As Object = CType(MyVal, Object)

So, is MyObj of type Object or of type Integer? MyObj.GetType() will tell you it is an Integer.

  1. But here comes the Type Of Foo Is Bar feature, which allows you to ascertain a variable Foo is compatible with a TypeName Bar. Type Of MyObj Is Integer and Type Of MyObj Is Object will both return True. For most cases, TypeOf will indicate a variable is compatible with a TypeName if the variable is of that Type or a Type that derives from it. Uninstall all pip packages that you're having problems with. Manually remove all site-packages files. If you're using MacPorts, sudo port clean .

Then try reinstalling. Sometimes, there are files that should have been removed, but weren't if the installation was abruptly interrupted or something.

There could be an issue with conflicting versions of the package(s), as well as potentially issues with Pathing. Are you sure you've set the correct Path for your binaries? (/opt/local/bin, /anaconda2/bin, etc.)

Another issue could be some PYTHONPATH that's explicitly looking in the wrong place for the file.

The first is the most concise, I would go with that. The first two are the same, but the first is just that little bit shorter, so you'll save on bytes. The third is plain wrong, because that condition will always evaluate true because the object will never be null or falsy for that matter.

There is no point in checking UBound(a) in every cycle of the for if we know exactly when it changes.

I've changed it so that it checks does UBound(a) just before the for starts and then only every time the ReDim is called

On my computer the old method took 7.52 seconds for an imax of 10 millions.

The new method took 5.29 seconds for an imax of also 10 millions, which signifies a performance increase of over 20% (for 10 millions tries, obviously this percentage has a direct relationship to the number of tries)

Java: Convert String to TimeStamp

I should like to contribute the modern answer. When this question was asked in 2013, using the Timestamp class was right, for example for storing a date-time into your database. Today the class is long outdated. The modern Java date and time API came out with Java 8 in the spring of 2014, three and a half years ago. I recommend you use this instead.

Depending on your situation an exact requirements, there are two natural replacements for Timestamp:

  • Instant is a point on the time-line. For most purposes I would consider it safest to use this. An Instant is independent of time zone and will usually work well even in situations where your client device and your database server run different time zones.
  • LocalDateTime is a date and time of day without time zone, like 2011-10-02 18:48:05.123 (to quote the question).

A modern JDBC driver (JDBC 4.2 or higher) and other modern tools for database access will be happy to store either an Instant or a LocalDateTime into your database column of datatype timestamp. Both classes and the other date-time classes I am using in this answer belong to the modern API known as java.time or JSR-310.

It’s easiest to convert your string to LocalDateTime, so let’s take that first:

I have specified a conversion using the JVM’s default time zone because this is what the outdated class would have used. If you can, specify a time zone in the region/city format instead, for example:

While the answers above are valid, if you are iterating over a dict {key:value} it this is the approach I like to use:

Generate SQL Create Scripts for existing tables with Query

First of all I love the script written by devart and I wanted to use it, but I found some limitation, so I decided to improve it:

  • I fixed the bug that limits the script at 4000 chars (it's still possible that some crazy table still exceeds the limits)
  • I fixed the bug/limitation in case the table uses a nonclustered primary key
  • I replaced '[' with quotename
  • I added the name of the default constraints
  • I changed the logic to identify the source table
  • I added the possibility to drop and recreate the table and its FKs
  • I added the possibility to generate specific attributes
  • I added the support for table compression
  • I added the possibility the generate the scripts for any number of tables
  • I fixed the limitation of 4000 varchar() when printing the result
  • I replaced '' with N''
  • I added the option to generate messages during the execution, because my final script (with the insert into) can take so long that I want to know what it's doing
  • I added the generation of an "Insert into"

I didn't have time to test it properly and I tested it only on SQL Server 2012/4

The next version will change the generation of FKs because they need to be added at the end. Otherwise they may fail.

DateTime.ParseExact(input,"yyyyMMdd HH:mm",null);

assuming you meant to say that minutes followed the hours, not seconds - your example is a little confusing.

The ParseExact documentation details other overloads, in case you want to have the parse automatically convert to Universal Time or something like that.

As @Joel Coehoorn mentions, there's also the option of using TryParseExact, which will return a Boolean value indicating success or failure of the operation - I'm still on .Net 1.1, so I often forget this one.

This is what I did. Works well.

First add the OkHttp to the gradle build file of the app module:

if you want to use cached images only. Call the library like this. I've noticed that if we don't add the networkPolicy, images won't show up in an fully offline start even if they are cached. The code below solves the problem.

Using msbuild to execute a File System Publish Profile

Still had trouble after trying all of the answers above (I use Visual Studio 2013). Nothing was copied to the publish folder.

The catch was that if I run MSBuild with an individual project instead of a solution, I have to put an additional parameter that specifies Visual Studio version:

/p:VisualStudioVersion=12.0

12.0 is for VS2013, replace with the version you use. Once I added this parameter, it just worked.

The complete command line looks like this:

MSBuild C:\PathToMyProject\MyProject.csproj /p:DeployOnBuild=true /p:PublishProfile=MyPublishProfile /p:VisualStudioVersion=12.0

Because of changes to how tracking branches are created and pushed I no longer recommend renaming branches. This is what I recommend now:

Make a copy of the branch at its current state:

git branch crazyexperiment

(The git branch <name> command will leave you with your current branch still checked out.)

Reset your current branch to your desired commit with git reset:

git reset --hard c2e7af2b51

(Replace c2e7af2b51 with the commit that you want to go back to.)

When you decide that your crazy experiment branch doesn't contain anything useful, you can delete it with:

git branch -D crazyexperiment

It's always nice when you're starting out with history-modifying git commands (reset, rebase) to create backup branches before you run them. Eventually once you're comfortable you won't find it necessary. If you do modify your history in a way that you don't want and haven't created a backup branch, look into git reflog. Git keeps commits around for quite a while even if there are no branches or tags pointing to them.

A slightly less scary way to do this than the git reset --hard method is to create a new branch. Let's assume that you're on the master branch and the commit you want to go back to is c2e7af2b51.

Rename your current master branch:

git branch -m crazyexperiment

Check out your good commit:

git checkout c2e7af2b51

Make your new master branch here:

git checkout -b master

Now you still have your crazy experiment around if you want to look at it later, but your master branch is back at your last known good point, ready to be added to. If you really want to throw away your experiment, you can use:

git branch -D crazyexperiment

When to use malloc for char pointers

Use malloc() when you don't know the amount of memory needed during compile time. In case if you have read-only strings then you can use const char* str = "something"; . Note that the string is most probably be stored in a read-only memory location and you'll not be able to modify it. Quickest way to convert XML to JSON in Java

The only problem with JSON in Java is that if your XML has a single child, but is an array, it will convert it to an object instead of an array. This can cause problems if you dynamically always convert from XML to JSON, where if your example XML has only one element, you return an object, but if it has 2+, you return an array, which can cause parsing issues for people using the JSON.

Infoscoop's XML2JSON class has a way of tagging elements that are arrays before doing the conversion, so that arrays can be properly mapped, even if there is only one child in the XML.

Here is an example of using it (in a slightly different language, but you can also see how arrays is used from the nodelist2json() method of the XML2JSON link).

How to gracefully handle the SIGKILL signal in Java

I would expect that the JVM gracefully interrupts (thread.interrupt()) all the running threads created by the application, at least for signals SIGINT (kill -2) and SIGTERM (kill -15).

This way, the signal will be forwarded to them, allowing a gracefully thread cancellation and resource finalization in the standard ways.

But this is not the case (at least in my JVM implementation: Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.8.0_25-b17), Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 25.25-b02, mixed mode).

As other users commented, the usage of shutdown hooks seems mandatory.

So, how do I would handle it?

Well first, I do not care about it in all programs, only in those where I want to keep track of user cancellations and unexpected ends. For example, imagine that your java program is a process managed by other. You may want to differentiate whether it has been terminated gracefully (SIGTERM from the manager process) or a shutdown has occurred (in order to relaunch automatically the job on startup).

As a basis, I always make my long-running threads periodically aware of interrupted status and throw an InterruptedException if they interrupted. This enables execution finalization in way controlled by the developer (also producing the same outcome as standard blocking operations). Then, at the top level of the thread stack, InterruptedException is captured and appropriate clean-up performed. These threads are coded to known how to respond to an interruption request. High cohesion design.

So, in these cases, I add a shutdown hook, that does what I think the JVM should do by default: interrupt all the non-daemon threads created by my application that are still running:

Why can I not switch branches?

You end up with both modified in the output of git status if there were conflicts produced by a merge. git isn't letting you change branch until you've resolved these conflicts. If you edit that file, you should see some conflict markers in it - there's a guide to resolving those conflicts in the git manual. (Since kernel.org is currently down, you can find that guide here instead.)

Alternatively, if you think the merge was a mistake, you could undo it with: git reset --merge

The POST/GET with 204 seems fine in the first sight and will also work.

Documentation says, 2xx -- This class of status codes indicates the action requested by the client was received, understood, accepted, and processed successfully. whereas 4xx -- The 4xx class of status code is intended for situations in which the client seems to have erred.

Since, the request was successfully received, understood and processed on server. The result was that the resource was not found. So, in this case this was not an error on the client side or the client has not erred.

Hence this should be a series 2xx code and not 4xx. Sending 204 (No Content) in this case will be better than a 404 or 410 response.

Maven Error: Could not find or load main class

TLDR : check if packaging element inside the pom.xml file is set to jar.

Like this - <packaging>jar</packaging>. If it set to pom your target folder will not be created even after you Clean and Build your project and Maven executable won't be able to find .class files (because they don't exist), after which you get Error: Could not find or load main class your.package.name.MainClass

Here packaging element is set to pom. Hence the target directory is not created as we are not enabling maven to package our application as a jar file. Change it to jar then Clean and Build your project, you should see target directory created at root location. Now you should be able to run that java file with main method.

There is no default value to control deleting old log files created by DailyRollingFileAppender. But you can write your own custom Appender that deletes old log files in much the same way as setting maxBackupIndex does for RollingFileAppender.

Normally the createFromFormat() method will use the local time zone if one is not specified.

However, the technique described here is initialising the DateTime object using microtime() which returns the number of seconds elapsed since the Unix Epoch (01 Jan 1970 00:00:00 GMT).

This means that the DateTime object is implicitly initialised to UTC, which is fine for server internal tasks that just want to track elapsed time.

The setTimeZone() method can be used to accomplish this requirement.
