How do I write outputs to the Log in Android?

Please see the logs as this way,

Log.e("ApiUrl = ", "MyApiUrl") (error)
Log.w("ApiUrl = ", "MyApiUrl") (warning)
Log.i("ApiUrl = ", "MyApiUrl") (information)
Log.d("ApiUrl = ", "MyApiUrl") (debug)
Log.v("ApiUrl = ", "MyApiUrl") (verbose)

How can I test if a letter in a string is uppercase or lowercase using JavaScript?

function solution(s) {
var c = s[0];

    return 'upper';
} else if (c == c.toLowerCase() && !(c >= '0' && c <= '9') &&(c >='a' && c <= 'z')){
    return 'lower';
} else if (c >= '0' && c <= '9'){
   return 'digit'
} else {
  return 'other'
}

How to decompile a whole Jar file?

2009: JavaDecompiler can do a good job with a jar: since 0.2.5, All files, in JAR files, are displayed.

http://java.decompiler.free.fr/sites/default/screenshots/screenshot1.png

See also the question "How do I “decompile” Java class files?".

The JD-Eclipse doesn't seem to have changed since late 2009 though (see Changes).
So its integration with latest Eclipse (3.8, 4.2+) might be problematic.

JD-Core is actively maintained.

Both are the result of the fantastic work of (SO user) Emmanuel Dupuy.

2018: A more modern option, mentioned in the comments by David Kennedy Araujo:

JetBrains/intellij-community/plugins/java-decompiler/engine

Fernflower is the first actually working analytical decompiler for Java and probably for a high-level programming language in general.

java -jar fernflower.jar [-<option>=<value>]* [<source>]+ <destination>

java -jar fernflower.jar -hes=0 -hdc=0 c:\Temp\binary\ -e=c:\Java\rt.jar c:\Temp\source\

C - split string into an array of strings

Since you've already looked into strtok just continue down the same path and split your string using space (' ') as a delimiter, then use something as realloc to increase the size of the array containing the elements to be passed to execvp.

See the below example, but keep in mind that strtok will modify the string passed to it. If you don't want this to happen you are required to make a copy of the original string, using strcpy or similar function.

char    str[]= "ls -l";
char ** res  = NULL;
char *  p    = strtok (str, " ");
int n_spaces = 0, i;

/* split string and append tokens to 'res' */

while (p) {
  res = realloc (res, sizeof (char*) * ++n_spaces);

  if (res == NULL)
    exit (-1); /* memory allocation failed */

  res[n_spaces-1] = p;

  p = strtok (NULL, " ");
}

/* realloc one extra element for the last NULL */

res = realloc (res, sizeof (char*) * (n_spaces+1));
res[n_spaces] = 0;

/* print the result */

for (i = 0; i < (n_spaces+1); ++i)
  printf ("res[%d] = %s\n", i, res[i]);

/* free the memory allocated */

free (res);

res[0] = ls
res[1] = -l
res[2] = (null)

Calculating a 2D Vector's Cross Product

A useful 2D vector operation is a cross product that returns a scalar. I use it to see if two successive edges in a polygon bend left or right.

From the Chipmunk2D source:

/// 2D vector cross product analog.
/// The cross product of 2D vectors results in a 3D vector with only a z component.
/// This function returns the magnitude of the z value.
static inline cpFloat cpvcross(const cpVect v1, const cpVect v2)
{
        return v1.x*v2.y - v1.y*v2.x;
}

__init__ and arguments in Python

In python you must always pass in at least one argument to class methods, the argument is self and it is not meaningless its a reference to the instance itself

What does the "On Error Resume Next" statement do?

It's worth noting that even when On Error Resume Next is in effect, the Err object is still populated when an error occurs, so you can still do C-style error handling.

Python Pandas Replacing Header with Top Row

Here's a simple trick that defines column indices "in place". Because set_index sets row indices in place, we can do the same thing for columns by transposing the data frame, setting the index, and transposing it back:

df = df.T.set_index(0).T

Note you may have to change the 0 in set_index(0) if your rows have a different index already.

Change color of Button when Mouse is over

Try this- In this example Original color is green and mouseover color will be DarkGoldenrod

<Button Content="Button" HorizontalAlignment="Left" VerticalAlignment="Bottom" Width="50" Height="50" HorizontalContentAlignment="Left" BorderBrush="{x:Null}" Foreground="{x:Null}" Margin="50,0,0,0">
    <Button.Style>
        <Style TargetType="{x:Type Button}">
            <Setter Property="Background" Value="Green"/>
            <Setter Property="Template">
                <Setter.Value>
                    <ControlTemplate TargetType="{x:Type Button}">
                        <Border Background="{TemplateBinding Background}">
                            <ContentPresenter HorizontalAlignment="Center" VerticalAlignment="Center"/>
                        </Border>
                    </ControlTemplate>
                </Setter.Value>
            </Setter>
            <Style.Triggers>
                <Trigger Property="IsMouseOver" Value="True">
                    <Setter Property="Background" Value="DarkGoldenrod"/>
                </Trigger>
            </Style.Triggers>

    </Button.Style>
</Button>

Jquery sortable 'change' event element position

$( "#sortable" ).sortable({
    change: function(event, ui) {
        var pos = ui.helper.index() < ui.placeholder.index()
            ? { start: ui.helper.index(), end: ui.placeholder.index() }
            : { start: ui.placeholder.index(), end: ui.helper.index() }

        $(this)
            .children().removeClass( 'highlight' )
            .not( ui.helper ).slice( pos.start, pos.end ).addClass( 'highlight' );
    },
    stop: function(event, ui) {
        $(this).children().removeClass( 'highlight' );
    }
});

FIDDLE

An example of how it could be done inside change event without storing arbitrary data into element storage. Since the element where drag starts is ui.helper, and the element of current position is ui.placeholder, we can take the elements between those two indexes and highlight them. Also, we can use this inside handler since it refers to the element that the widget is attached. The example works with dragging in both directions.

Is there any way to do HTTP PUT in python

Using urllib3

To do that, you will need to manually encode query parameters in the URL.

>>> import urllib3
>>> http = urllib3.PoolManager()
>>> from urllib.parse import urlencode
>>> encoded_args = urlencode({"name":"Zion","salary":"1123","age":"23"})
>>> url = 'http://dummy.restapiexample.com/api/v1/update/15410' + encoded_args
>>> r = http.request('PUT', url)
>>> import json
>>> json.loads(r.data.decode('utf-8'))
{'status': 'success', 'data': [], 'message': 'Successfully! Record has been updated.'}

Using requests

>>> import requests
>>> r = requests.put('https://httpbin.org/put', data = {'key':'value'})
>>> r.status_code
200

Extract parameter value from url using regular expressions

I know the question is Old and already answered but this can also be a solution

DEMO

How to remove decimal values from a value of type 'double' in Java

This should do the trick.

System.out.println(percentageValue.split("\.")[0]);

Create two threads, one display odd & other even numbers

 public class ThreadClass {
   volatile int i = 1;
    volatile boolean state=true;

    synchronized public void printOddNumbers(){

                   try {
                       while (!state) {

                           wait();
                       }

                   } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                       e.printStackTrace();
                   }
                System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()+" "+i);
                      state = false;
                      i++;
                      notifyAll();

    }

  synchronized  public void printEvenNumbers(){

      try {
          while (state) {

              wait();
          }

      } catch (InterruptedException e) {
          e.printStackTrace();
      }
      System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()+" "+i);
      state = true;
      i++;
      notifyAll();

    }
}

Then call the above class like this

   // I am ttying to print 10 values.
  ThreadClass threadClass=new ThreadClass();

        Thread t1=new Thread(){
            int k=0;
            @Override
            public void run() {
                while (k<5) {
                    threadClass.printOddNumbers();
                    k++;
                }
            }
        };
        t1.setName("Thread1");
        Thread t2=new Thread(){
            int j=0;
            @Override
            public void run() {
                while (j<5) {
                    threadClass.printEvenNumbers();
                    j++;
                }
            }
        };
        t2.setName("Thread2");

        t1.start();

        t2.start();
  1. Here I am trying to printing the 1 to 10 numbers.
  2. One thread trying to print the even numbers and another Thread Odd numbers.
  3. my logic is print the even number after odd number. For this even numbers thread should wait until notify from the odd numbers method.
  4. Each thread calls particular method 5 times because I am trying to print 10 values only.

out put:

System.out: Thread1 1
System.out: Thread2 2
System.out: Thread1 3
System.out: Thread2 4
System.out: Thread1 5
System.out: Thread2 6
System.out: Thread1 7
System.out: Thread2 8
System.out: Thread1 9
System.out: Thread2 10

CSS: Change image src on img:hover

There is another simple way using HTML and CSS only!

Just wrap your <img> tag with div like so:

<div class="image-wrapper">
    <img src="http://dummyimage.com/100x100/000/fff">
</div>

Then, in your CSS file hide the img and set the background image for the wrapping div element:

.image-wrapper:hover {
    background-image: url(http://dummyimage.com/100x100/eb00eb/fff);
    background-size: contain;
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

.image-wrapper:hover img {
    display: none;
}

Et voilà!

Html.EditorFor Set Default Value

Shouldn't the @Html.EditorFor() make use of the Attributes you put in your model?

[DefaultValue(false)]
public bool TestAccount { get; set; }

Can I set an opacity only to the background image of a div?

So here is an other way:

background-image: linear-gradient(rgba(255,255,255,0.5), rgba(255,255,255,0.5)), url("your_image.png");

jQuery - Redirect with post data

Construct and fill out a hidden method=POST action="http://example.com/vote" form and submit it, rather than using window.location at all.

or

$('#inset_form').html(

    <input type="text" name="name" value="' + value + '" /></form>');
document.forms['form'].submit();

What's the difference between process.cwd() vs __dirname?

process.cwd() returns the current working directory,

i.e. the directory from which you invoked the node command.

__dirname returns the directory name of the directory containing the JavaScript source code file

how can I set visible back to true in jquery

I would be careful with setting the display of the element to block. Different elements have the standard display as different things. For example setting display to block for a table row in firefox causes the width of the cells to be incorrect.

Is the name of the element actually test1. I know that .NET can add extra things onto the start or end. The best way to find out if your selector is working properly is by doing this.

alert($('#text1').length);

You might just need to remove the visibility attribute

$('#text1').removeAttr('visibility');

Using XAMPP, how do I swap out PHP 5.3 for PHP 5.2?

I couldn't get this working. Started with PHP 5.3, then tried to switch to PHP 5.28 from xampp-win32-1.7.0.zip. Couldn't get it to work. Then, I got smart and figured out i was working with XAMPP and you can install it wherever you want, so I did a fresh install from scratch with xampp-win32-1.7.0.zip. The whole point of working with XAMPP is so you don't have to fuss with the sysadmin stuff. Using it in that context got me up and running in no time.

IF EXISTS before INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE for optimization

IF EXISTS....UPDATE

Don't do it. It forces two scans/seeks instead of one.

If update doesn't find a match on the WHERE clause, the cost of the update statement is just a seek/scan.

If it does find a match, and if you preface it w/ IF EXISTS, it has to find the same match twice. And in a concurrent environment, what was true for the EXISTS may not be true any longer for the UPDATE.

This is precisely why UPDATE/DELETE/INSERT statements allow a WHERE clause. Use it!

Opposite of append in jquery

What you also should consider, is keeping a reference to the created element, then you can easily remove it specificly:

   var newUL = $('<ul><li>test</li></ul>');
   $(this).append(newUL);

   // Later ...

   newUL.remove();

init-param and context-param

<init-param> and <context-param> are static parameters which are stored in web.xml file. If you have any data which doesn't change frequently you can store it in one of them.

If you want to store particular data which is confined to a particular servlet scope, then you can use <init-param> .Anything you declare inside <init-param> is only accessible only for that particular servlet.The init-param is declared inside the <servlet> tag.

<servlet>
     <display-name>HelloWorldServlet</display-name>
     <servlet-name>HelloWorldServlet</servlet-name>
     <init-param>
         <param-name>Greetings</param-name>
         <param-value>Hello</param-value>
     </init-param>
</servlet>

and you can access those parameters in the servlet as follows:

out.println(getInitParameter("Greetings"));

If you want to store data which is common for whole application and if it doesn't change frequently you can use <context-param> instead of servletContext.setAttribute() method of the application context. For more information regarding usage of <context-param> VS ServletContext.setAttribute() have a look at this question. context-param are declared under the tag web-app. You can declare and access the <context-param> as follows

<web-app>
    <context-param>
        <param-name>Country</param-name>
        <param-value>India</param-value>
    </context-param>
    <context-param>
        <param-name>Age</param-name>
        <param-value>24</param-value>
    </context-param>
</web-app>

Usage in the application either in a JSP or Servlet

getServletContext().getInitParameter("Country");
getServletContext().getInitParameter("Age");

What is the difference between Integer and int in Java?

int is a primitive type that represent an integer. whereas Integer is an Object that wraps int. The Integer object gives you more functionality, such as converting to hex, string, etc.

You can also use OOP concepts with Integer. For example, you can use Integer for generics (i.e. Collection<Integer>).

Formatting a number with exactly two decimals in JavaScript

Using this response by reference: https://stackoverflow.com/a/21029698/454827

I build a function to get dynamic numbers of decimals:

function toDec(num, dec)
{
        if(typeof dec=='undefined' || dec<0)
                dec = 2;

        var tmp = dec + 1;
        for(var i=1; i<=tmp; i++)
                num = num * 10;

        num = num / 10;
        num = Math.round(num);
        for(var i=1; i<=dec; i++)
                num = num / 10;

        num = num.toFixed(dec);

        return num;
}

How can I remove a button or make it invisible in Android?

This view is visible.

button.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);

button.setVisibility(View.GONE);

But if you just want to make it invisible:

button.setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE);

How can I reverse a NSArray in Objective-C?

NSMutableArray *objMyObject = [NSMutableArray arrayWithArray:[self reverseArray:objArrayToBeReversed]];

How to input a string from user into environment variable from batch file

You can use set with the /p argument:

SET /P variable=[promptString]

The /P switch allows you to set the value of a variable to a line of input entered by the user. Displays the specified promptString before reading the line of input. The promptString can be empty.

So, simply use something like

set /p Input=Enter some text:

Later you can use that variable as argument to a command:

myCommand %Input%

Be careful though, that if your input might contain spaces it's probably a good idea to quote it:

myCommand "%Input%"

Can an Android Toast be longer than Toast.LENGTH_LONG?

You may want to try:

for (int i=0; i < 2; i++)
{
      Toast.makeText(this, "blah", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();
}

to double the time. If you specify 3 instead the 2 it will triple the time..etc.

Reading file from Workspace in Jenkins with Groovy script

If you are trying to read a file from the workspace during a pipeline build step, there's a method for that:

readFile('name-of-file.groovy')

For reference, see https://jenkins.io/doc/pipeline/steps/workflow-basic-steps/#readfile-read-file-from-workspace.

How to convert a string to number in TypeScript?

As shown by other answers here, there are multiple ways to do the conversion:

Number('123');
+'123';
parseInt('123');
parseFloat('123.45')

I'd like to mention one more thing on parseInt though.

When using parseInt, it makes sense to always pass the radix parameter. For decimal conversion, that is 10. This is the default value for the parameter, which is why it can be omitted. For binary, it's a 2 and 16 for hexadecimal. Actually, any radix between and including 2 and 36 works.

parseInt('123')         // 123 (don't do this)
parseInt('123', 10)     // 123 (much better)

parseInt('1101', 2)     // 13
parseInt('0xfae3', 16)  // 64227

In some JS implementations, parseInt parses leading zeros as octal:

Although discouraged by ECMAScript 3 and forbidden by ECMAScript 5, many implementations interpret a numeric string beginning with a leading 0 as octal. The following may have an octal result, or it may have a decimal result. Always specify a radix to avoid this unreliable behavior.

MDN

The fact that code gets clearer is a nice side effect of specifying the radix parameter.

Since parseFloat only parses numeric expressions in radix 10, there's no need for a radix parameter here.

With CSS, how do I make an image span the full width of the page as a background image?

If you're hoping to use background-image: url(...);, I don't think you can. However, if you want to play with layering, you can do something like this:

<img class="bg" src="..." />

And then some CSS:

.bg
{
  width: 100%;
  z-index: 0;
}

You can now layer content above the stretched image by playing with z-indexes and such. One quick note, the image can't be contained in any other elements for the width: 100%; to apply to the whole page.

Here's a quick demo if you can't rely on background-size: http://jsfiddle.net/bB3Uc/

   '07/01/2007'
)
WHERE col4 = 1001;

Error in MySQL when setting default value for DATE or DATETIME

I got into a situation where the data was mixed between NULL and 0000-00-00 for a date field. But I did not know how to update the '0000-00-00' to NULL, because

 update my_table set my_date_field=NULL where my_date_field='0000-00-00'

is not allowed any more. My workaround was quite simple:

update my_table set my_date_field=NULL where my_date_field<'1000-01-01'

because all the incorrect my_date_field values (whether correct dates or not) were from before this date.

How to add a custom Ribbon tab using VBA?

The answers on here are specific to using the custom UI Editor. I spent some time creating the interface without that wonderful program, so I am documenting the solution here to help anyone else decide if they need that custom UI editor or not.

I came across the following microsoft help webpage - https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff861787.aspx. This shows how to set up the interface manually, but I had some trouble when pointing to my custom add-in code.

To get the buttons to work with your custom macros, setup the macro in your .xlam subs to be called as described in this SO answer - Calling an excel macro from the ribbon. Basically, you'll need to add that "control As IRibbonControl" paramter to any module pointed from your ribbon xml. Also, your ribbon xml should have the onAction="myaddin!mymodule.mysub" syntax to properly call any modules loaded by the add in.

Using those instructions I was able to create an excel add in (.xlam file) that has a custom tab loaded when my VBA gets loaded into Excel along with the add in. The buttons execute code from the add in and the custom tab uninstalls when I remove the add in.

What's the fastest way to do a bulk insert into Postgres?

It mostly depends on the (other) activity in the database. Operations like this effectively freeze the entire database for other sessions. Another consideration is the datamodel and the presence of constraints,triggers, etc.

My first approach is always: create a (temp) table with a structure similar to the target table (create table tmp AS select * from target where 1=0), and start by reading the file into the temp table. Then I check what can be checked: duplicates, keys that already exist in the target, etc.

Then I just do a "do insert into target select * from tmp" or similar.

If this fails, or takes too long, I abort it and consider other methods (temporarily dropping indexes/constraints, etc)

Typescript Type 'string' is not assignable to type

Typescript 3.4 introduces the new 'const' assertion

You can now prevent literal types (eg. 'orange' or 'red') being 'widened' to type string with a so-called const assertion.

You will be able to do:

let fruit = 'orange' as const; // or...
let fruit = <const> 'orange';

And then it won't turn itself into a string anymore - which is the root of the problem in the question.

Set an empty DateTime variable

You can set a DateTime variable to be '1/1/0001 00:00:00' but the variable itself cannot be null. To get this MinTime use:

It's not 100% compatible, but it works for the most common wget usage (IMO)

Arduino IDE can't find ESP8266WiFi.h file

For those who are having trouble with fatal error: ESP8266WiFi.h: No such file or directory, you can install the package manually.

  1. Download the Arduino ESP8266 core from here https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino
  2. Go into library from the downloaded core and grab ESP8266WiFi.
  3. Drag that into your local Arduino/library folder. This can be found by going into preferences and looking at your Sketchbook location

You may still need to have the http://arduino.esp8266.com/stable/package_esp8266com_index.json package installed beforehand, however.

Edit: That wasn't the full issue, you need to make sure you have the correct ESP8266 Board selected before compiling.

Hope this helps others.

What is the difference between vmalloc and kmalloc?

One of other differences is kmalloc will return logical address (else you specify GPF_HIGHMEM). Logical addresses are placed in "low memory" (in the first gigabyte of physical memory) and are mapped directly to physical addresses (use __pa macro to convert it). This property implies kmalloced memory is continuous memory.

In other hand, Vmalloc is able to return virtual addresses from "high memory". These addresses cannot be converted in physical addresses in a direct fashion (you have to use virt_to_page function).

Purpose of installing Twitter Bootstrap through npm?

  1. The point of using CDN is that it is faster, first of all, because it is a distributed network, but secondly, because the static files are being cached by the browsers and chances are high that, for example, the CDN's jquery library that your site uses had already been downloaded by the user's browser, and therefore the file had been cached, and therefore no unnecessary download is taking place. That being said, it is still a good idea to provide a fallback.

    Now, the point of bootstrap's npm package

    is that it provides bootstrap's javascript file as a module. As has been mentioned above, this makes it possible to require it using browserify, which is the most likely use case and, as I understand it, the main reason for bootstrap being published on npm.

  2. How to use it

    Imagine the following project structure:

    project
    |-- node_modules
    |-- public
    |   |-- css
    |   |-- img
    |   |-- js
    |   |-- index.html
    |-- package.json

In your index.html you can reference both css and js files like this:

<link rel="stylesheet" href="../node_modules/bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css">
<script src="../node_modules/bootstrap/dist/js/bootstrap.min.js"></script>

Which is the simplest way, and correct for the .css files. But it is much better to include the bootstrap.js file like this somewhere in your public/js/*.js files:

var bootstrap = require('bootstrap');

And you include this code only in those javascript files where you actually need bootstrap.js. Browserify takes care of including this file for you.

Now, the drawback is that you now have your front-end files as node_modules dependencies, and the node_modules folder is usually not checked in with git. I think this is the most controversial part, with many opinions and solutions.

UPDATE March 2017

Almost two years have passed since I wrote this answer and an update is in place.

Now the generally accepted way is to use a bundler like webpack (or another bundler of choice) to bundle all your assets in a build step.

Firstly, it allows you to use commonjs syntax just like browserify, so to include bootstrap js code in your project you do the same:

const bootstrap = require('bootstrap');

As for the css files, webpack has so called "loaders". They allow you write this in your js code:

require('bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.css');

and the css files will be "magically" included in your build. They will be dynamically added as <style /> tags when your app runs, but you can configure webpack to export them as a separate css file. You can read more about that in webpack's documentation.

In conclusion.

  1. You should "bundle" your app code with a bundler
  2. You shouldn't commit neither node_modules nor the dynamically built files to git. You can add a build script to npm which should be used to deploy files on server. Anyway, this can be done in different ways depending on your preferred build process.

Can't draw Histogram, 'x' must be numeric

Note that you could as well plot directly from ce (after the comma removing) using the column name :

hist(ce$Weight)

(As opposed to using hist(ce[1]), which would lead to the same "must be numeric" error.)

This also works for a database query result.

grabbing first row in a mysql query only

To return only one row use LIMIT 1:

SELECT *
FROM tbl_foo
WHERE name = 'sarmen'
LIMIT 1

It doesn't make sense to say 'first row' or 'last row' unless you have an ORDER BY clause. Assuming you add an ORDER BY clause then you can use LIMIT in the following ways:

  • To get the first row use LIMIT 1.
  • To get the 2nd row you can use limit with an offset: LIMIT 1, 1.
  • To get the last row invert the order (change ASC to DESC or vice versa) then use LIMIT 1.

R color scatter plot points based on values

Also it'd work to just specify ifelse() twice:

plot(pos,cn, col= ifelse(cn >= 3, "red", ifelse(cn <= 1,"blue", "black")), ylim = c(0, 10))

How to highlight a selected row in ngRepeat?

You probably want to have LI rather than the UL have the background-color:

.selected li {
  background-color: red;
}

Then you want to have a dynamic class for the UL:

<ul ng-repeat="vote in votes" ng-click="setSelected()" class="{{selected}}">

Now you need to update the $scope.selected when clicking the row:

$scope.setSelected = function() {
   console.log("show", arguments, this);
   this.selected = 'selected';
}

and then un-select the previously highlighted row:

$scope.setSelected = function() {
   // console.log("show", arguments, this);
   if ($scope.lastSelected) {
     $scope.lastSelected.selected = '';
   }
   this.selected = 'selected';
   $scope.lastSelected = this;
}

Visual Studio Code Automatic Imports

If anyone has run into this issue recently, I found I had to add a setting to use my workspace's version of typescript for the auto-imports to work. To do this, add this line to your workspace settings:

{
  "typescript.tsdk": "./node_modules/typescript/lib"
}

Then, with a typescript file open in vscode, click the typescript version number in the lower right-hand corner. When the options at the top appear, choose "use workspace version", then reload vscode.

Now auto-imports should work.

Unit test naming best practices

I like to follow the "Should" naming standard for tests while naming the test fixture after the unit under test (i.e. the class).

To illustrate (using C# and NUnit):

[TestFixture]
public class BankAccountTests
{
  [Test]
  public void Should_Increase_Balance_When_Deposit_Is_Made()
  {
     var bankAccount = new BankAccount();
     bankAccount.Deposit(100);
     Assert.That(bankAccount.Balance, Is.EqualTo(100));
  }
}

Why "Should"?

I find that it forces the test writers to name the test with a sentence along the lines of "Should [be in some state] [after/before/when] [action takes place]"

Yes, writing "Should" everywhere does get a bit repetitive, but as I said it forces writers to think in the correct way (so can be good for novices). Plus it generally results in a readable English test name.

Update:

I've noticed that Jimmy Bogard is also a fan of 'should' and even has a unit test library called Should.

Update (4 years later...)

For those interested, my approach to naming tests has evolved over the years. One of the issues with the Should pattern I describe above as its not easy to know at a glance which method is under test. For OOP I think it makes more sense to start the test name with the method under test. For a well designed class this should result in readable test method names. I now use a format similar to <method>_Should<expected>_When<condition>. Obviously depending on the context you may want to substitute the Should/When verbs for something more appropriate. Example: Deposit_ShouldIncreaseBalance_WhenGivenPositiveValue()

  ...
  <use xlink:href="#inner-border-rect" x="?" y="?" width="?" height="?">
</svg>

Note: Make sure to replace the ? in use with real values.

Background: The reason why this works is because symbol establishes a new viewport by replacing symbol with svg and creating an element in the shadow DOM. This svg of the shadow DOM is then linked into your current SVG element. Note that svgs can be nested and every svg creates a new viewport, which clips everything that overlaps, including the overlapping border. For a much more detailed overview of whats going on read this fantastic article by Sara Soueidan.

XPath test if node value is number

Test the value against NaN:

<xsl:if test="string(number(myNode)) != 'NaN'">

This is a shorter version (thanks @Alejandro):

<xsl:if test="number(myNode) = myNode">

Resync git repo with new .gitignore file

I know this is an old question, but gracchus's solution doesn't work if file names contain spaces. VonC's solution to file names with spaces is to not remove them utilizing --ignore-unmatch, then remove them manually, but this will not work well if there are a lot.

Here is a solution that utilizes bash arrays to capture all files.

# Build bash array of the file names
while read -r file; do
    rmlist+=( "$file" )
done < <(git ls-files -i --exclude-standard)

git rm –-cached "${rmlist[@]}"

git commit -m 'ignore update'

Jackson and generic type reference

This is a well-known problem with Java type erasure: T is just a type variable, and you must indicate actual class, usually as Class argument. Without such information, best that can be done is to use bounds; and plain T is roughly same as 'T extends Object'. And Jackson will then bind JSON Objects as Maps.

In this case, tester method needs to have access to Class, and you can construct

JavaType type = mapper.getTypeFactory().
  constructCollectionType(List.class, Foo.class)

and then

List<Foo> list = mapper.readValue(new File("input.json"), type);

How can I sanitize user input with PHP?

One trick that can help in the specific circumstance where you have a page like /mypage?id=53 and you use the id in a WHERE clause is to ensure that id definitely is an integer, like so:

if (isset($_GET['id'])) {
  $id = $_GET['id'];
  settype($id, 'integer');
  $result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM mytable WHERE id = '$id'");
  # now use the result
}

But of course that only cuts out one specific attack, so read all the other answers. (And yes I know that the code above isn't great, but it shows the specific defence.)

How do you configure HttpOnly cookies in tomcat / java webapps?

In Tomcat6, You can conditionally enable from your HTTP Listener Class:

public void contextInitialized(ServletContextEvent event) {
   if (Boolean.getBoolean("HTTP_ONLY_SESSION")) HttpOnlyConfig.enable(event);
}

Using this class

import java.lang.reflect.Field;
import javax.servlet.ServletContext;
import javax.servlet.ServletContextEvent;
import org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext;
public class HttpOnlyConfig
{
    public static void enable(ServletContextEvent event)
    {
        ServletContext servletContext = event.getServletContext();
        Field f;
        try
        { // WARNING TOMCAT6 SPECIFIC!!
            f = servletContext.getClass().getDeclaredField("context");
            f.setAccessible(true);
            org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext ac = (org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationContext) f.get(servletContext);
            f = ac.getClass().getDeclaredField("context");
            f.setAccessible(true);
            org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContext sc = (StandardContext) f.get(ac);
            sc.setUseHttpOnly(true);
        }
        catch (Exception e)
        {
            System.err.print("HttpOnlyConfig cant enable");
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    }

Fastest JavaScript summation

For your specific case, just use the reduce method of Arrays:

var sumArray = function() {
    // Use one adding function rather than create a new one each
    // time sumArray is called
    function add(a, b) {
        return a + b;
    }

    return function(arr) {
        return arr.reduce(add);
    };
}();

alert( sumArray([2, 3, 4]) );

How to view an HTML file in the browser with Visual Studio Code

If you would like to have live reload you can use gulp-webserver, which will watch for your file changes and reload page, this way you don't have to press F5 every time on your page:

Here is how to do it:

  • Open command prompt (cmd) and type

    npm install --save-dev gulp-webserver

  • Enter Ctrl+Shift+P in VS Code and type Configure Task Runner. Select it and press enter. It will open tasks.json file for you. Remove everything from it end enter just following code

tasks.json

{
    "version": "0.1.0",
    "command": "gulp",
    "isShellCommand": true,
    "args": [
        "--no-color"
    ],
    "tasks": [
        {
            "taskName": "webserver",
            "isBuildCommand": true,
            "showOutput": "always"
        }
    ]
}
  • In the root directory of your project add gulpfile.js and enter following code:

gulpfile.js

var gulp = require('gulp'),
    webserver = require('gulp-webserver');

gulp.task('webserver', function () {
    gulp.src('app')
        .pipe(webserver({
            livereload: true,
            open: true
        }));
});
  • Now in VS Code enter Ctrl+Shift+P and type "Run Task" when you enter it you will see your task "webserver" selected and press enter.

Your webserver now will open your page in your default browser. Now any changes that you will do to your HTML or CSS pages will be automatically reloaded.

Here is an information on how to configure 'gulp-webserver' for instance port, and what page to load, ...

You can also run your task just by entering Ctrl+P and type task webserver

What is the best java image processing library/approach?

I know this question is quite old, but as new software comes out it does help to get some new links to projects that might be interesting for folks.

imgscalr is pure-Java image resizing (and simple ops like padding, cropping, rotating, brighten/dimming, etc.) library that is painfully simple to use - a single class consists of a set of simple graphics operations all defined as static methods that you pass an image and get back a result.

The most basic example of using the library would look like this:

BufferedImage thumbnail = Scalr.resize(image, 150);

And a more typical usage to generate image thumbnails using a few quality tweaks and the like might look like this:

import static org.imgscalr.Scalr.*;

public static BufferedImage createThumbnail(BufferedImage img) {
    // Create quickly, then smooth and brighten it.
    img = resize(img, Method.SPEED, 125, OP_ANTIALIAS, OP_BRIGHTER);

    // Let's add a little border before we return result.
    return pad(img, 4);
}

All image-processing operations use the raw Java2D pipeline (which is hardware accelerated on major platforms) and won't introduce the pain of calling out via JNI like library contention in your code.

imgscalr has also been deployed in large-scale productions in quite a few places - the inclusion of the AsyncScalr class makes it a perfect drop-in for any server-side image processing.

There are numerous tweaks to image-quality you can use to trade off between speed and quality with the highest ULTRA_QUALITY mode providing a scaled result that looks better than GIMP's Lancoz3 implementation.

Launch Pycharm from command line (terminal)

You're right that the JetBrains help page isn't very clear. On OS X, you'll want to use the launcher at:

/Applications/PyCharm.app/Contents/MacOS/pycharm

Or, for community edition:

/Applications/PyCharm\ CE.app/Contents/MacOS/pycharm

Unfortunately, adding a symlink to this binary wouldn't work for me (the launcher would crash). Setting an alias worked, though. Add this in your .bash_profile (or whatever shell you use):

alias pycharm="/Applications/PyCharm CE.app/Contents/MacOS/pycharm"

Then, you can run commands with simply pycharm.

With this you can do things like open a project:

pycharm ~/repos/my-project

Or open a specific line of a file in a project:

pycharm ~/repos/my-project --line 42 ~/repos/my-project/script.py

Or view the diff of two files (they don't need to be part of a project):

pycharm ~/some_file.txt ~/Downloads/some_other_file.txt

Note that I needed to pass absolute paths to those files or PyCharm couldn't find them..

Python style - line continuation with strings?

Another possibility is to use the textwrap module. This also avoids the problem of "string just sitting in the middle of nowhere" as mentioned in the question.

import textwrap
mystr = """\
        Why, hello there
        wonderful stackoverfow people"""
print (textwrap.fill(textwrap.dedent(mystr)))

add class with JavaScript

Simply add a class name to the beginning of the funciton and the 2nd and 3rd arguments are optional and the magic is done for you!

function getElementsByClass(searchClass, node, tag) {

  var classElements = new Array();

  if (node == null)

    node = document;

  if (tag == null)

    tag = '*';

  var els = node.getElementsByTagName(tag);

  var elsLen = els.length;

  var pattern = new RegExp('(^|\\\\s)' + searchClass + '(\\\\s|$)');

  for (i = 0, j = 0; i < elsLen; i++) {

    if (pattern.test(els[i].className)) {

      classElements[j] = els[i];

      j++;

    }

  }

  return classElements;

}

Long vs Integer, long vs int, what to use and when?

a) object Class "Long" versus primitive type "long". (At least in Java)

b) There are different (even unclear) memory-sizes of the primitive types:

Java - all clear: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/nutsandbolts/datatypes.html

  • int .. .. .. 16b ... wtf?!?!
  • long .. .. 32b

how I can show the sum of in a datagridview column?

Use LINQ if you can.

  label1.Text =  dataGridView1.Rows.Cast<DataGridViewRow>()
                                   .AsEnumerable()
                                   .Sum(x => int.Parse(x.Cells[1].Value.ToString()))
                                   .ToString();

Adding and removing style attribute from div with jquery

The easy way to handle this (and best HTML solution to boot) is to set up classes that have the styles you want to use. Then it's a simple matter of using addClass() and removeClass(), or even toggleClass().

$('#voltaic_holder').addClass('shiny').removeClass('dull');

or even

$('#voltaic_holder').toggleClass('shiny dull');

Google Maps API - how to get latitude and longitude from Autocomplete without showing the map?

You can use the code below.

<script src="http://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?libraries=places" type="text/javascript"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">
    function initialize() {
        var input = document.getElementById('searchTextField');
        var autocomplete = new google.maps.places.Autocomplete(input);
        google.maps.event.addListener(autocomplete, 'place_changed', function () {
            var place = autocomplete.getPlace();
            document.getElementById('city2').value = place.name;
            document.getElementById('cityLat').value = place.geometry.location.lat();
            document.getElementById('cityLng').value = place.geometry.location.lng();
            //alert("This function is working!");
            //alert(place.name);
           // alert(place.address_components[0].long_name);

        });
    }
    google.maps.event.addDomListener(window, 'load', initialize);
</script>

and this part is inside your form:

<input id="searchTextField" type="text" size="50" placeholder="Enter a location" autocomplete="on" runat="server" />
<input type="hidden" id="city2" name="city2" />
<input type="hidden" id="cityLat" name="cityLat" />
<input type="hidden" id="cityLng" name="cityLng" />

I hope it helps.

Troubleshooting BadImageFormatException

I am surprised that no-one else has mentioned this so I am sharing in case none of the above help (my case).

What was happening was that an VBCSCompiler.exe instance was somehow stuck and was in fact not releasing the file handles to allow new instances to correctly write the new files and was causing the issue. This became apparent when I tried to delete the "bin" folder and it was complaining that another process was using files in there.

Closed VS, opened task manager, looked and terminated all VBCSCompiler instances and deleted the "bin" folder to get back to where I was.

What does from __future__ import absolute_import actually do?

The difference between absolute and relative imports come into play only when you import a module from a package and that module imports an other submodule from that package. See the difference:

$ mkdir pkg
$ touch pkg/__init__.py
$ touch pkg/string.py
$ echo 'import string;print(string.ascii_uppercase)' > pkg/main1.py
$ python2
Python 2.7.9 (default, Dec 13 2014, 18:02:08) [GCC] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import pkg.main1
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "pkg/main1.py", line 1, in <module>
    import string;print(string.ascii_uppercase)
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'ascii_uppercase'
>>>
$ echo 'from __future__ import absolute_import;import string;print(string.ascii_uppercase)' > pkg/main2.py
$ python2
Python 2.7.9 (default, Dec 13 2014, 18:02:08) [GCC] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import pkg.main2
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
>>>

In particular:

$ python2 pkg/main2.py
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "pkg/main2.py", line 1, in <module>
    from __future__ import absolute_import;import string;print(string.ascii_uppercase)
AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute 'ascii_uppercase'
$ python2
Python 2.7.9 (default, Dec 13 2014, 18:02:08) [GCC] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import pkg.main2
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ
>>>
$ python2 -m pkg.main2
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ

Note that python2 pkg/main2.py has a different behaviour then launching python2 and then importing pkg.main2 (which is equivalent to using the -m switch).

If you ever want to run a submodule of a package always use the -m switch which prevents the interpreter for chaining the sys.path list and correctly handles the semantics of the submodule.

Also, I much prefer using explicit relative imports for package submodules since they provide more semantics and better error messages in case of failure.

Is it possible to return empty in react render function?

Some answers are slightly incorrect and point to the wrong part of the docs:

If you want a component to render nothing, just return null, as per doc:

In rare cases you might want a component to hide itself even though it was rendered by another component. To do this return null instead of its render output.

If you try to return undefined for example, you'll get the following error:

Nothing was returned from render. This usually means a return statement is missing. Or, to render nothing, return null.

As pointed out by other answers, null, true, false and undefined are valid children which is useful for conditional rendering inside your jsx, but it you want your component to hide / render nothing, just return null.

How do I get HTTP Request body content in Laravel?

How to permanently remove few commits from remote branch

Sometimes the easiest way to fix this issue is to make a new branch from the place where you know the code is good. Then you can leave the errant branch history alone in case you need to cherry-pick other commits from it later. This also ensures you did not lose any commit history.

From your local errant branch:

git log

copy the commit hash that you wanted the branch to be at and exit the git log

git checkout theHashYouJustCopied
git checkout -b your_new_awesome_branch

Now you have a new branch just the way you want it.

If you also needed to keep a specific commit from the errant branch that is not on your new branch, you can just cherry-pick that specific commit you need:

git checkout the_errant_branch
git log

Copy the commit hash of the one commit you need to pull into the good branch and exit the git log.

git checkout your_new_awesome_branch
git cherry-pick theHashYouJustCopied

Pat yourself on the back.

How can I avoid Java code in JSP files, using JSP 2?

Use JSTL tag libraries in JSP. That will work perfectly.

In most of cases it is data log problem. Follow the steps.

i) Go to data folder of mysql. For xampp go to C:\xampp\mysql\data.

ii) Look for log file name like ib_logfile0 and ib_logfile1.

iii) Create backup and delete those files.

iv) Restart apache and mysql.

Setting PayPal return URL and making it auto return?

I think that the idea of setting the Auto Return values as described above by Kevin is a bit strange!

Say, for example, that you have a number of websites that use the same PayPal account to handle your payments, or say that you have a number of sections in one website that perform different purchasing tasks, and require different return-addresses when the payment is completed. If I put a button on my page as described above in the 'Sample form using PHP for direct payments' section, you can see that there is a line there:

input type="hidden" name="return" value="https://www.yoursite.com/checkout_complete.php"

where you set the individual return value. Why does it have to be set generally, in the profile section as well?!?!

Also, because you can only set one value in the Profile Section, it means (AFAIK) that you cannot use the Auto Return on a site with multiple actions.

Comments please??

Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel, despite setting ServerCertificateValidationCallback

You are doing it right with ServerCertificateValidationCallback. This is not the problem you are facing. The problem you are facing is most likely the version of SSL/TLS protocol.

For example, if your server offers only SSLv3 and TLSv10 and your client needs TLSv12 then you will receive this error message. What you need to do is to make sure that both client and server have a common protocol version supported.

When I need a client that is able to connect to as many servers as possible (rather than to be as secure as possible) I use this (together with setting the validation callback):

  ServicePointManager.SecurityProtocol = SecurityProtocolType.Ssl3 | SecurityProtocolType.Tls | SecurityProtocolType.Tls11 | SecurityProtocolType.Tls12;

React / JSX Dynamic Component Name

For a wrapper component, a simple solution would be to just use React.createElement directly (using ES6).

import RaisedButton from 'mui/RaisedButton'
import FlatButton from 'mui/FlatButton'
import IconButton from 'mui/IconButton'

class Button extends React.Component {
  render() {
    const { type, ...props } = this.props

    let button = null
    switch (type) {
      case 'flat': button = FlatButton
      break
      case 'icon': button = IconButton
      break
      default: button = RaisedButton
      break
    }

    return (
      React.createElement(button, { ...props, disableTouchRipple: true, disableFocusRipple: true })
    )
  }
}

What are the differences between LDAP and Active Directory?

LDAP is a standard, AD is Microsoft's (proprietary) implementation (and more). Wikipedia has a good article that delves into the specifics. I found this document with a very detailed evaluation of AD from an LDAP perspective.

PHP decoding and encoding json with unicode characters

$json = array('tag' => 'Odómetro'); // Original array
$json = json_encode($json); // {"Tag":"Od\u00f3metro"}
$json = json_decode($json); // Od\u00f3metro becomes  Odómetro
echo $json->{'tag'}; // Odómetro
echo utf8_decode($json->{'tag'}); // Odómetro

You were close, just use utf8_decode.

How do I force my .NET application to run as administrator?

I implemented some code to do it manually:

using System.Security.Principal;
public bool IsUserAdministrator()

        WindowsIdentity user = WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent();
        WindowsPrincipal principal = new WindowsPrincipal(user);
        isAdmin = principal.IsInRole(WindowsBuiltInRole.Administrator);
    }
    catch (UnauthorizedAccessException ex)
    {
        isAdmin = false;
    }
    catch (Exception ex)
    {
        isAdmin = false;

Is there a way to get rid of accents and convert a whole string to regular letters?

@David Conrad solution is the fastest I tried using the Normalizer, but it does have a bug. It basically strips characters which are not accents, for example Chinese characters and other letters like æ, are all stripped. The characters that we want to strip are non spacing marks, characters which don't take up extra width in the final string. These zero width characters basically end up combined in some other character. If you can see them isolated as a character, for example like this `, my guess is that it's combined with the space character.

public static String flattenToAscii(String string) {
    char[] out = new char[string.length()];
    String norm = Normalizer.normalize(string, Normalizer.Form.NFD);

    int j = 0;
    for (int i = 0, n = norm.length(); i < n; ++i) {
        char c = norm.charAt(i);
        int type = Character.getType(c);

        //Log.d(TAG,""+c);
        //by Ricardo, modified the character check for accents, ref: http://stackoverflow.com/a/5697575/689223
        if (type != Character.NON_SPACING_MARK){
            out[j] = c;
            j++;
        }
    }
    //Log.d(TAG,"normalized string:"+norm+"/"+new String(out));
    return new String(out);
}

Why do 64-bit DLLs go to System32 and 32-bit DLLs to SysWoW64 on 64-bit Windows?

I believe the intent was to rename System32, but so many applications hard-coded for that path, that it wasn't feasible to remove it.

SysWoW64 wasn't intended for the dlls of 64-bit systems, it's actually something like "Windows on Windows64", meaning the bits you need to run 32bit apps on a 64bit windows.

This article explains a bit:

"Windows x64 has a directory System32 that contains 64-bit DLLs (sic!). Thus native processes with a bitness of 64 find “their” DLLs where they expect them: in the System32 folder. A second directory, SysWOW64, contains the 32-bit DLLs. The file system redirector does the magic of hiding the real System32 directory for 32-bit processes and showing SysWOW64 under the name of System32."

Edit: If you're talking about an installer, you really should not hard-code the path to the system folder. Instead, let Windows take care of it for you based on whether or not your installer is running on the emulation layer.

UIView touch event in controller

Updating @Crashalot's answer for Swift 3.x:

override func touchesBegan(_ touches: Set<UITouch>, with event: UIEvent?) {
    if let touch = touches.first {
        let currentPoint = touch.location(in: self)
        // do something with your currentPoint
    }
}

override func touchesMoved(_ touches: Set<UITouch>, with event: UIEvent?) {
    if let touch = touches.first {
        let currentPoint = touch.location(in: self)
        // do something with your currentPoint
    }
}

override func touchesEnded(_ touches: Set<UITouch>, with event: UIEvent?) {
    if let touch = touches.first {
        let currentPoint = touch.location(in: self)
        // do something with your currentPoint

Convert string to date in bash

date only work with GNU date (usually comes with Linux)

for OS X, two choices:

  1. change command (verified)

    #!/bin/sh
    #DATE=20090801204150
    #date -jf "%Y%m%d%H%M%S" $DATE "+date \"%A,%_d %B %Y %H:%M:%S\""
    date "Saturday, 1 August 2009 20:41:50"

MySQL default datetime through phpmyadmin

You're getting that error because the default value current_time is not valid for the type DATETIME. That's what it says, and that's whats going on.

The only field you can use current_time on is a timestamp.

Given a starting and ending indices, how can I copy part of a string in C?

Have you checked strncpy?

char * strncpy ( char * destination, const char * source, size_t num );

You must realize that begin and end actually defines a num of bytes to be copied from one place to another.

No output to console from a WPF application?

Old post, but I ran into this so if you're trying to output something to Output in a WPF project in Visual Studio, the contemporary method is:

Include this:

using System.Diagnostics;

And then:

Debug.WriteLine("something");

Get user's current location

You may want to take a look at GeoIP Country Whois Locator found at PHPClasses.

PDO's query vs execute

Gilean's answer is great, but I just wanted to add that sometimes there are rare exceptions to best practices, and you might want to test your environment both ways to see what will work best.

In one case, I found that query worked faster for my purposes because I was bulk transferring trusted data from an Ubuntu Linux box running PHP7 with the poorly supported Microsoft ODBC driver for MS SQL Server.

I arrived at this question because I had a long running script for an ETL that I was trying to squeeze for speed. It seemed intuitive to me that query could be faster than prepare & execute because it was calling only one function instead of two. The parameter binding operation provides excellent protection, but it might be expensive and possibly avoided if unnecessary.

Given a couple rare conditions:

  1. If you can't reuse a prepared statement because it's not supported by the Microsoft ODBC driver.

  2. If you're not worried about sanitizing input and simple escaping is acceptable. This may be the case because binding certain datatypes isn't supported by the Microsoft ODBC driver.

  3. PDO::lastInsertId is not supported by the Microsoft ODBC driver.

Here's a method I used to test my environment, and hopefully you can replicate it or something better in yours:

To start, I've created a basic table in Microsoft SQL Server

CREATE TABLE performancetest (
    sid INT IDENTITY PRIMARY KEY,
    id INT,
    val VARCHAR(100)
);

And now a basic timed test for performance metrics.

$logs = [];

$test = function (String $type, Int $count = 3000) use ($pdo, &$logs) {
    $start = microtime(true);
    $i = 0;
    while ($i < $count) {
        $sql = "INSERT INTO performancetest (id, val) OUTPUT INSERTED.sid VALUES ($i,'value $i')";
        if ($type === 'query') {
            $smt = $pdo->query($sql);
        } else {
            $smt = $pdo->prepare($sql);
            $smt ->execute();
        }
        $sid = $smt->fetch(PDO::FETCH_ASSOC)['sid'];
        $i++;
    }
    $total = (microtime(true) - $start);
    $logs[$type] []= $total;
    echo "$total $type\n";
};

$trials = 15;
$i = 0;
while ($i < $trials) {
    if (random_int(0,1) === 0) {
        $test('query');
    } else {
        $test('prepare');
    }
    $i++;
}

foreach ($logs as $type => $log) {
    $total = 0;
    foreach ($log as $record) {
        $total += $record;
    }
    $count = count($log);
    echo "($count) $type Average: ".$total/$count.PHP_EOL;
}

I've played with multiple different trial and counts in my specific environment, and consistently get between 20-30% faster results with query than prepare/execute

5.8128969669342 prepare
5.8688418865204 prepare
4.2948560714722 query
4.9533629417419 query
5.9051351547241 prepare
4.332102060318 query
5.9672858715057 prepare
5.0667371749878 query
3.8260300159454 query
4.0791549682617 query
4.3775160312653 query
3.6910600662231 query
5.2708210945129 prepare
6.2671611309052 prepare
7.3791449069977 prepare
(7) prepare Average: 6.0673267160143
(8) query Average: 4.3276024162769

I'm curious to see how this test compares in other environments, like MySQL.

Why isn't textarea an input[type="textarea"]?

A textarea can contain multiple lines of text, so one wouldn't be able to pre-populate it using a value attribute.

Similarly, the select element needs to be its own element to accommodate option sub-elements.

Debugging Stored Procedure in SQL Server 2008

Yes you can (provided you have at least the professional version of visual studio), although it requires a little setting up once you've done this it's not much different from debugging code. MSDN has a basic walkthrough.

How can I check if given int exists in array?

You do need to loop through it. C++ does not implement any simpler way to do this when you are dealing with primitive type arrays.

How to declare a structure in a header that is to be used by multiple files in c?

a.h:

#ifndef A_H
#define A_H

struct a {
    int i;
    struct b {
        int j;
    }
};

#endif

there you go, now you just need to include a.h to the files where you want to use this structure.

Format cell color based on value in another sheet and cell

I'm using Excel 2003 -

The problem with using conditional formatting here is that you can't reference another worksheet or workbook in your conditions. What you can to do is set some column on sheet 1 equal to the appropriate column on sheet 2 (in your example =Sheet2!B6). I used Column F in my example below. Then you can use conditional formatting. Select the cell at Sheet 1, row , column 1 and then go to the conditional formatting menu. Choose "Formula Is" from the drop down and set the condition to "=$F$6=4". Click on the format button and then choose the Patterns tab. Choose the color you want and you're done.

You can use the format painter tool to apply conditional formatting to other cells, but be aware that by default Excel uses absolute references in the conditions. If you want them to be relative you'll need to remove the dollar signs from the condition.

You can have up to 3 conditions applied to a cell (use the add >> button at the bottom of the Conditional formatting dialog) so if the last row is fixed (for example, you know that it will always be row 10) you can use it as a condition to set the background color to none. Assuming that the last value you care about is in row 10 then (still assuming that you've set column F on sheet1 to the corresponding cells on sheet 2) then set the 1st condition to Formula Is =$F$10="" and the pattern to None. Make it the first condition and it will override any following conflicting statements.

How to call Android contacts list?

hi i have a code to save the contact in your database by shared preference here is my code

        String ph = sharedPref.getString ("phone","");
        LargeText.setText(name + " " + ph);

"Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created" negative effects

Reference - Turning off this option can help you avoid re-creating a table, it can also lead to changes being lost. For example, suppose that you enable the Change Tracking feature in SQL Server 2008 to track changes to the table. When you perform an operation that causes the table to be re-created, you receive the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. However, if you turn off this option, the existing change tracking information is deleted when the table is re-created. Therefore,Microsoft recommend that you do not work around this problem by turning off the option.

Custom circle button

here is how you can perform simply, make a drawable resource file in drawable.xml. Say round_button.xml and then paste the following code.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<layer-list xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">

    <item>
       <shape
           android:shape="oval">

           <solid
               android:color="@color/button_start_gradient_color"/>
       </shape>
    </item>
    <item
        android:drawable="@drawable/microphone"/>
</layer-list>

Note:- use your own color and drawable resource as i have used @drawable/microphone

Inserting data into a temporary table

All the above mentioned answers will almost fullfill the purpose. However, You need to drop the temp table after all the operation on it. You can follow-

INSERT INTO #TempTable (ID, Date, Name)
SELECT id, date, name
FROM physical_table;

IF OBJECT_ID('tempdb.dbo.#TempTable') IS NOT NULL
    DROP TABLE #TempTable;

Pivoting rows into columns dynamically in Oracle

First of all, dynamically pivot using pivot xml again needs to be parsed. We have another way of doing this by storing the column names in a variable and passing them in the dynamic sql as below.

Consider we have a table like below.

enter image description here

If we need to show the values in the column YR as column names and the values in those columns from QTY, then we can use the below code.

declare
  sqlqry clob;
  cols clob;
begin
  select listagg('''' || YR || ''' as "' || YR || '"', ',') within group (order by YR)
  into   cols
  from   (select distinct YR from EMPLOYEE);

  sqlqry :=
  '
  select * from
  (
      select *
      from EMPLOYEE
  )
  pivot
  (
    MIN(QTY) for YR in (' || cols  || ')
  )';

  execute immediate sqlqry;
end;

Simple bubble sort c#

This one works for me

public static int[] SortArray(int[] array)
{
    int length = array.Length;

    int temp = array[0];

    for (int i = 0; i < length; i++)
    {
        for (int j = i+1; j < length; j++)
        {
            if (array[i] > array[j])
            {
                temp = array[i];

                array[i] = array[j];

                array[j] = temp;
            }
        }
    }

    return array;
}

sscanf in Python

You can parse with module re using named groups. It won't parse the substrings to their actual datatypes (e.g. int) but it's very convenient when parsing strings.

Given this sample line from /proc/net/tcp:

line="   0: 00000000:0203 00000000:0000 0A 00000000:00000000 00:00000000 00000000     0        0 335 1 c1674320 300 0 0 0"

An example mimicking your sscanf example with the variable could be:

import re
hex_digit_pattern = r"[\dA-Fa-f]"
pat = r"\d+: " + \
      r"(?P<local_addr>HEX+):(?P<local_port>HEX+) " + \
      r"(?P<rem_addr>HEX+):(?P<rem_port>HEX+) " + \
      r"HEX+ HEX+:HEX+ HEX+:HEX+ HEX+ +\d+ +\d+ " + \
      r"(?P<inode>\d+)"
pat = pat.replace("HEX", hex_digit_pattern)

values = re.search(pat, line).groupdict()

import pprint; pprint values
# prints:
# {'inode': '335',
#  'local_addr': '00000000',
#  'local_port': '0203',
#  'rem_addr': '00000000',
#  'rem_port': '0000'}

Delete all rows in a table based on another table

While the OP doesn't want to use an 'in' statement, in reply to Ankur Gupta, this was the easiest way I found to delete the records in one table which didn't exist in another table, in a one to many relationship:

DELETE
FROM Table1 as t1
WHERE ID_Number NOT IN
(SELECT ID_Number FROM Table2 as t2)

Worked like a charm in Access 2016, for me.

How to extract a floating number from a string

If your float is always expressed in decimal notation something like

>>> import re
>>> re.findall("\d+\.\d+", "Current Level: 13.4 db.")
['13.4']

may suffice.

A more robust version would be:

>>> re.findall(r"[-+]?\d*\.\d+|\d+", "Current Level: -13.2 db or 14.2 or 3")
['-13.2', '14.2', '3']

If you want to validate user input, you could alternatively also check for a float by stepping to it directly:

user_input = "Current Level: 1e100 db"
for token in user_input.split():
    try:
        # if this succeeds, you have your (first) float
        print float(token), "is a float"
    except ValueError:
        print token, "is something else"

# => Would print ...
#
# Current is something else
# Level: is something else
# 1e+100 is a float
# db is something else

Why are interface variables static and final by default?

Since interface doesn't have a direct object, the only way to access them is by using a class/interface and hence that is why if interface variable exists, it should be static otherwise it wont be accessible at all to outside world. Now since it is static, it can hold only one value and any classes that implements it can change it and hence it will be all mess.

Hence if at all there is an interface variable, it will be implicitly static, final and obviously public!!!

How to break long string to multiple lines

I know that this is super-duper old, but on the off chance that someone comes looking for this, as of Visual Basic 14, Vb supports interpolation. Sooooo cool!

Example:

SQLQueryString = $"
   Insert into Employee values(
       {txtEmployeeNo},
       {txtContractsStartDate},
       {txtSeatNo},
       {txtFloor},
       {txtLeaves}
)"

It works. Documentation Here

Edit: After writing this, I realized that the OP was talking about VBA. This will not work in VBA!!! However, I will leave this up here, because as someone new to VB, I stumbled upon this question looking for a solution to just this problem in VB.net. If this helps someone else, great.

How to terminate script execution when debugging in Google Chrome?

Good question here. I think you cannot terminate the script execution. Although I have never looked for it, I have been using the chrome debugger for quite a long time at work. I usually set breakpoints in my javascript code and then I debug the portion of code I'm interested in. When I finish debugging that code, I usually just run the rest of the program or refresh the browser.

If you want to prevent the rest of the script from being executed (e.g. due to AJAX calls that are going to be made) the only thing you can do is to remove that code in the console on-the-fly, thus preventing those calls from being executed, then you could execute the remaining code without problems.

I hope this helps!

P.S: I tried to find out an option for terminating the execution in some tutorials / guides like the following ones, but couldn't find it. As I said before, probably there is no such option.

Html table with button on each row

Put a single listener on the table. When it gets a click from an input with a button that has a name of "edit" and value "edit", change its value to "modify". Get rid of the input's id (they aren't used for anything here), or make them all unique.

<script type="text/javascript">

function handleClick(evt) {
  var node = evt.target || evt.srcElement;
  if (node.name == 'edit') {
    node.value = "Modify";
  }
}

</script>

<table id="table1" border="1" onclick="handleClick(event);">

How to input automatically when running a shell over SSH?

For simple input, like two prompts and two corresponding fixed responses, you could also use a "here document", the syntax of which looks like this:

test.sh <<!
y
pasword
!

The << prefixes a pattern, in this case '!'. Everything up to a line beginning with that pattern is interpreted as standard input. This approach is similar to the suggestion to pipe a multi-line echo into ssh, except that it saves the fork/exec of the echo command and I find it a bit more readable. The other advantage is that it uses built-in shell functionality so it doesn't depend on expect.

MDN has the following to say about string.concat():

It is strongly recommended to use the string concatenation operators (+, +=) instead of this method for perfomance reasons

Get OS-level system information

I think the best method out there is to implement the SIGAR API by Hyperic. It works for most of the major operating systems ( darn near anything modern ) and is very easy to work with. The developer(s) are very responsive on their forum and mailing lists. I also like that it is GPL2 Apache licensed. They provide a ton of examples in Java too!

How to check if an environment variable exists and get its value?

There is no difference between environment variables and variables in a script. Environment variables are just defined earlier, outside the script, before the script is called. From the script's point of view, a variable is a variable.

You can check if a variable is defined:

if [ -z "$a" ]
then
    echo "not defined"
else
    echo "defined"
fi

and then set a default value for undefined variables or do something else.

The -z checks for a zero-length (i.e. empty) string. See man bash and look for the CONDITIONAL EXPRESSIONS section.

You can also use set -u at the beginning of your script to make it fail once it encounters an undefined variable, if you want to avoid having an undefined variable breaking things in creative ways.

Change border-bottom color using jquery?

to modify more css property values, you may use css object. such as:

hilight_css = {"border-bottom-color":"red",
               "background-color":"#000"};
$(".msg").css(hilight_css);

but if the modification code is bloated. you should consider the approach March suggested. do it this way:

first, in your css file:

.hilight { border-bottom-color:red; background-color:#000; }
.msg { /* something to make it notifiable */ }

second, in your js code:

$(".msg").addClass("hilight");
// to bring message block to normal
$(".hilight").removeClass("hilight");

if ie 6 is not an issue, you can chain these classes to have more specific selectors.

How can I check if a program exists from a Bash script?

Assuming you are already following safe shell practices:

set -eu -o pipefail
shopt -s failglob

./dummy --version 2>&1 >/dev/null

This assumes the command can be invoked in such a way that it does (almost) nothing, like reporting its version or showing help.

If the dummy command is not found, Bash exits with the following error...

./my-script: line 8: dummy: command not found

This is more useful and less verbose than the other command -v (and similar) answers because the error message is auto generated and also contains a relevant line number.

Python matplotlib multiple bars

I did this solution: if you want plot more than one plot in one figure, make sure before plotting next plots you have set right matplotlib.pyplot.hold(True) to able adding another plots.

Concerning the datetime values on the X axis, a solution using the alignment of bars works for me. When you create another bar plot with matplotlib.pyplot.bar(), just use align='edge|center' and set width='+|-distance'.

When you set all bars (plots) right, you will see the bars fine.

Get week number (in the year) from a date PHP

<?php
$ddate = "2012-10-18";
$duedt = explode("-",$ddate);
$date = mktime(0, 0, 0, $duedt[1], $duedt[2],$duedt[0]);
$week = (int)date('W', $date);
echo "Weeknummer: ".$week;
?>

You had the params to mktime wrong - needs to be Month/Day/Year, not Day/Month/Year

How to filter object array based on attributes?

I prefer the Underscore framework. It suggests many useful operations with objects. Your task:

var newArray = homes.filter(
    price <= 1000 &
    sqft >= 500 &
    num_of_beds >=2 &
    num_of_baths >= 2.5);

can be overwriten like:

var newArray = _.filter (homes, function(home) {
    return home.price<=1000 && sqft>=500 && num_of_beds>=2 && num_of_baths>=2.5;
});

Hope it will be useful for you!

client denied by server configuration

I have servers with proper lists of hosts and IPs. None of that allow all stuff. My fix was to put the hostname of my new workstation into the list. So the advise is:

Make sure the computer you're using is ACTUALLY on the list of allowed IPs. Look at IPs from logmessages, resolve names, check ifconfig / ipconfig etc.

*Google sent me due to the error-message.

How to add a line to a multiline TextBox?

The "Lines" property of a TextBox is an array of strings. By definition, you cannot add elements to an existing string[], like you can to a List<string>. There is simply no method available for the purpose. You must instead create a new string[] based on the current Lines reference, and assign it to Lines.

Using a little Linq (.NET 3.5 or later):

textBox1.Lines = textBox.Lines.Concat(new[]{"Some Text"}).ToArray();

This code is fine for adding one new line at a time based on user interaction, but for initializing a textbox with a few dozen new lines, it will perform very poorly. If you're setting the initial value of a TextBox, I would either set the Text property directly using a StringBuilder (as other answers have mentioned), or if you're set on manipulating the Lines property, use a List to compile the collection of values and then convert it to an array to assign to Lines:

var myLines = new List<string>();

myLines.Add("brown");
myLines.Add("brwn");
myLines.Add("brn");
myLines.Add("brow");
myLines.Add("br");
myLines.Add("brw");
...

textBox1.Lines = myLines.ToArray();

Even then, because the Lines array is a calculated property, this involves a lot of unnecessary conversion behind the scenes.

How to format DateTime to 24 hours time?

Use upper-case HH for 24h format:

String s = curr.ToString("HH:mm");

See DateTime.ToString Method.

iOS: Compare two dates

NSDate actually represents a time interval in seconds since a reference date (1st Jan 2000 UTC I think). Internally, a double precision floating point number is used so two arbitrary dates are highly unlikely to compare equal even if they are on the same day. If you want to see if a particular date falls on a particular day, you probably need to use NSDateComponents. e.g.

NSDateComponents* dateComponents = [[NSDateComponents alloc] init];
[dateComponents setYear: 2011];
[dateComponents setMonth: 5];
[dateComponents setDay: 24];
/*
 * Construct two dates that bracket the day you are checking.
 * Use the user's current calendar. I think this takes care of things like daylight saving time.
 */
NSCalendar* calendar = [NSCalendar currentCalendar];
NSDate* startOfDate = [calendar dateFromComponents: dateComponents];
NSDateComponents* oneDay = [[NSDateComponents alloc] init];
[oneDay setDay: 1];
NSDate* endOfDate = [calendar dateByAddingComponents: oneDay toDate: startOfDate options: 0];
/*
 * Compare the date with the start of the day and the end of the day.
 */
NSComparisonResult startCompare = [startOfDate compare: myDate];
NSComparisonResult endCompare = [endOfDate compare: myDate];

if (startCompare != NSOrderedDescending && endCompare == NSOrderedDescending)
{
    // we are on the right date
}

How do I initialize a byte array in Java?

Using a function converting an hexa string to byte[], you could do

byte[] CDRIVES = hexStringToByteArray("e04fd020ea3a6910a2d808002b30309d");

I'd suggest you use the function defined by Dave L in Convert a string representation of a hex dump to a byte array using Java?

I insert it here for maximum readability :

public static byte[] hexStringToByteArray(String s) {
    int len = s.length();
    byte[] data = new byte[len / 2];
    for (int i = 0; i < len; i += 2) {
        data[i / 2] = (byte) ((Character.digit(s.charAt(i), 16) << 4)
                             + Character.digit(s.charAt(i+1), 16));
    }
    return data;
}

If you let CDRIVES static and final, the performance drop is irrelevant.

Best way to test if a row exists in a MySQL table

At times it is quite handy to get the auto increment primary key (id) of the row if it exists and 0 if it doesn't.

Here's how this can be done in a single query:

SELECT IFNULL(`id`, COUNT(*)) FROM WHERE ...

What is unexpected T_VARIABLE in PHP?

There might be a semicolon or bracket missing a line before your pasted line.

It seems fine to me; every string is allowed as an array index.

Secondary axis with twinx(): how to add to legend?

I found an following official matplotlib example that uses host_subplot to display multiple y-axes and all the different labels in one legend. No workaround necessary. Best solution I found so far. http://matplotlib.org/examples/axes_grid/demo_parasite_axes2.html

from mpl_toolkits.axes_grid1 import host_subplot
import mpl_toolkits.axisartist as AA
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

host = host_subplot(111, axes_class=AA.Axes)
plt.subplots_adjust(right=0.75)

par1 = host.twinx()
par2 = host.twinx()

offset = 60
new_fixed_axis = par2.get_grid_helper().new_fixed_axis
par2.axis["right"] = new_fixed_axis(loc="right",
                                    axes=par2,
                                    offset=(offset, 0))

par2.axis["right"].toggle(all=True)

host.set_xlim(0, 2)
host.set_ylim(0, 2)

host.set_xlabel("Distance")
host.set_ylabel("Density")
par1.set_ylabel("Temperature")
par2.set_ylabel("Velocity")

p1, = host.plot([0, 1, 2], [0, 1, 2], label="Density")
p2, = par1.plot([0, 1, 2], [0, 3, 2], label="Temperature")
p3, = par2.plot([0, 1, 2], [50, 30, 15], label="Velocity")

par1.set_ylim(0, 4)
par2.set_ylim(1, 65)

host.legend()

plt.draw()
plt.show()

Why not use Double or Float to represent currency?

This is not a matter of accuracy, nor is it a matter of precision. It is a matter of meeting the expectations of humans who use base 10 for calculations instead of base 2. For example, using doubles for financial calculations does not produce answers that are "wrong" in a mathematical sense, but it can produce answers that are not what is expected in a financial sense.

Even if you round off your results at the last minute before output, you can still occasionally get a result using doubles that does not match expectations.

Using a calculator, or calculating results by hand, 1.40 * 165 = 231 exactly. However, internally using doubles, on my compiler / operating system environment, it is stored as a binary number close to 230.99999... so if you truncate the number, you get 230 instead of 231. You may reason that rounding instead of truncating would have given the desired result of 231. That is true, but rounding always involves truncation. Whatever rounding technique you use, there are still boundary conditions like this one that will round down when you expect it to round up. They are rare enough that they often will not be found through casual testing or observation. You may have to write some code to search for examples that illustrate outcomes that do not behave as expected.

Assume you want to round something to the nearest penny. So you take your final result, multiply by 100, add 0.5, truncate, then divide the result by 100 to get back to pennies. If the internal number you stored was 3.46499999.... instead of 3.465, you are going to get 3.46 instead 3.47 when you round the number to the nearest penny. But your base 10 calculations may have indicated that the answer should be 3.465 exactly, which clearly should round up to 3.47, not down to 3.46. These kinds of things happen occasionally in real life when you use doubles for financial calculations. It is rare, so it often goes unnoticed as an issue, but it happens.

If you use base 10 for your internal calculations instead of doubles, the answers are always exactly what is expected by humans, assuming no other bugs in your code.

How can I get the current date and time in the terminal and set a custom command in the terminal for it?

You can use date to get time and date of a day:

[pengyu@GLaDOS ~]$date
Tue Aug 27 15:01:27 CST 2013

Also hwclock would do:

[pengyu@GLaDOS ~]$hwclock
Tue 27 Aug 2013 03:01:29 PM CST  -0.516080 seconds

For customized output, you can either redirect the output of date to something like awk, or write your own program to do that.

Remember to put your own executable scripts/binary into your PATH (e.g. /usr/bin) to make it invokable anywhere.

Convert bytes to int?

Lists of bytes are subscriptable (at least in Python 3.6). This way you can retrieve the decimal value of each byte individually.

>>> intlist = [64, 4, 26, 163, 255]
>>> bytelist = bytes(intlist)       # b'@x04\x1a\xa3\xff'

>>> for b in bytelist:
...    print(b)                     # 64  4  26  163  255

>>> [b for b in bytelist]           # [64, 4, 26, 163, 255]

>>> bytelist[2]                     # 26
