Using PHP variables inside HTML tags?

There's a shorthand-type way to do this that I have been using recently. This might need to be configured, but it should work in most mainline PHP installations. If you're storing the link in a PHP variable, you can do it in the following manner based off the OP:

<html>
  <body>
    <?php
      $link = "http://www.google.com";
    ?>
    <a href="<?= $link ?>">Click here to go to Google.</a>
  </body>
</html>

This will evaluate the variable as a string, in essence shorthand for echo $link;

How do I use this JavaScript variable in HTML?

<head>
    <title>Test</title>
</head>

<body>
    <h1>Hi there<span id="username"></span>!</h1>
    <script>
       let userName = prompt("What is your name?");
       document.getElementById('username').innerHTML = userName;
    </script>
</body>

Convert an image to grayscale

To summarize a few items here: There are some pixel-by-pixel options that, while being simple just aren't fast.

@Luis' comment linking to: (archived) https://web.archive.org/web/20110827032809/http://www.switchonthecode.com/tutorials/csharp-tutorial-convert-a-color-image-to-grayscale is superb.

He runs through three different options and includes timings for each.

Pushing an existing Git repository to SVN

Using git rebase directly will lose the first commit. Git treats it different and can't rebase it.

There is a procedure that will preserve full history: http://kerneltrap.org/mailarchive/git/2008/10/26/3815034

I will transcribe the solution here, but credits are for Björn.

Initialize git-svn:

git svn init -s --prefix=svn/ https://svn/svn/SANDBOX/warren/test2

The --prefix gives you remote tracking branches like "svn/trunk" which is nice because you don't get ambiguous names if you call your local branch just "trunk" then. And -s is a shortcut for the standard trunk/tags/branches layout.

Fetch the initial stuff from SVN:

git svn fetch

Now look up the hash of your root commit (should show a single commit):

git rev-list --parents master | grep '^.\{40\}$'

Then get the hash of the empty trunk commit:

git rev-parse svn/trunk

Create the graft:

git replace --graft <root-commit-hash> <svn-trunk-commit-hash>

Now, "gitk" should show svn/trunk as the first commit on which your master branch is based.

Make the graft permanent:

git filter-branch -- ^svn/trunk --all

Drop the graft:

git replace -d <root-commit-hash>

gitk should still show svn/trunk in the ancestry of master.

Linearize your history on top of trunk:

git svn rebase

And now "git svn dcommit -n" should tell you that it is going to commit to trunk.

git svn dcommit

How to query MongoDB with "like"?

If you have a string variable, you must convert it to a regex, so MongoDb will use a like statement on it.

const name = req.query.title; //John
db.users.find({ "name": new Regex(name) });

Is the same result as:

db.users.find({"name": /John/})

How to identify a strong vs weak relationship on ERD?

We draw a solid line if and only if we have an ID-dependent relationship; otherwise it would be a dashed line.

Consider a weak but not ID-dependent relationship; We draw a dashed line because it is a weak relationship.

TypeError: '<=' not supported between instances of 'str' and 'int'

input() by default takes the input in form of strings.

if (0<= vote <=24):

vote takes a string input (suppose 4,5,etc) and becomes uncomparable.

The correct way is: vote = int(input("Enter your message")will convert the input to integer (4 to 4 or 5 to 5 depending on the input)

What is code coverage and how do YOU measure it?

For Perl there's the excellent Devel::Cover module which I regularly use on my modules.

If the build and installation is managed by Module::Build you can simply run ./Build testcover to get a nice HTML site that tells you the coverage per sub, line and condition, with nice colors making it easy to see which code path has not been covered.

IE8 support for CSS Media Query

IE didn't add media query support until IE9. So with IE8 you're out of luck.

Use getElementById on HTMLElement instead of HTMLDocument

Thanks to dee for the answer above with the Scrape() subroutine. The code worked perfectly as written, and I was able to then convert the code to work with the specific website I am trying to scrape.

I do not have enough reputation to upvote or to comment, but I do actually have some minor improvements to add to dee's answer:

  1. You will need to add the VBA Reference via "Tools\References" to "Microsoft HTML Object Library in order for the code to compile.

  2. I commented out the Browser.Visible line and added the comment as follows

    'if you need to debug the browser page, uncomment this line:
    'Browser.Visible = True

  3. And I added a line to close the browser before Set Browser = Nothing:

    Browser.Quit

Thanks again dee!

ETA: this works on machines with IE9, but not machines with IE8. Anyone have a fix?

Found the fix myself, so came back here to post it. The ClassName function is available in IE9. For this to work in IE8, you use querySelectorAll, with a dot preceding the class name of the object you are looking for:

'Set repList = doc.getElementsByClassName("reportList") 'only works in IE9, not in IE8
Set repList = doc.querySelectorAll(".reportList") 'this works in IE8+

Also, it would be best to have $('body').show(); as the last line in your last and main .js file.

for each loop in Objective-C for accessing NSMutable dictionary

Fast enumeration was added in 10.5 and in the iPhone OS, and it's significantly faster, not just syntactic sugar. If you have to target the older runtime (i.e. 10.4 and backwards), you'll have to use the old method of enumerating:

NSDictionary *myDict = ... some keys and values ...
NSEnumerator *keyEnum = [myDict keyEnumerator];
id key;

while ((key = [keyEnum nextObject]))
{
    id value = [myDict objectForKey:key];
    ... do work with "value" ...
}

You don't release the enumerator object, and you can't reset it. If you want to start over, you have to ask for a new enumerator object from the dictionary.

What is the difference between Cloud, Grid and Cluster?

There's some pretty good answers here but I want to elaborate on all topics:

Cloud: shailesh's answer is awesome, nothing to add there! Basically, An application that's served seamlessly over the network can be considered a Cloud application. Cloud isn't a new invention and it's very similar to Grid computing, but it's more of a buzzword with the spike of recent popularity.

Grid: Grid is defined as a large collection as machines connected by a private network and offers a set of services to users, it acts as a sort of supercomputer by sharing processing power across the machines. Source: Tenenbaum, Andrew.

Cluster: A cluster is different from those two. Clusters are two or more computers who share a network connection that acts as a heart-beat. Clusters are configurable in Active-Active or Active-Passive ways. Active-Active being that each computer runs it's own set of services (Say, one runs a SQL instance, the other runs a web server) and they share some resources such as storage. If one of the computers in a cluster goes down the service fails over to the other node and almost seamlessly starts running there. Active-Passive is similar, but only one machine runs these services and only takes over once there's a failure.

setTimeout / clearTimeout problems

That's because timer is a local variable to your function.

Try creating it outside of the function.

C# Passing Function as Argument

There are a couple generic types in .Net (v2 and later) that make passing functions around as delegates very easy.

For functions with return types, there is Func<> and for functions without return types there is Action<>.

Both Func and Action can be declared to take from 0 to 4 parameters. For example, Func < double, int > takes one double as a parameter and returns an int. Action < double, double, double > takes three doubles as parameters and returns nothing (void).

So you can declare your Diff function to take a Func:

public double Diff(double x, Func<double, double> f) {
    double h = 0.0000001;

    return (f(x + h) - f(x)) / h;
}

And then you call it as so, simply giving it the name of the function that fits the signature of your Func or Action:

double result = Diff(myValue, Function);

You can even write the function in-line with lambda syntax:

double result = Diff(myValue, d => Math.Sqrt(d * 3.14));

Regular expression for 10 digit number without any special characters

Use this regular expression to match ten digits only:

@"^\d{10}$"

To find a sequence of ten consecutive digits anywhere in a string, use:

@"\d{10}"

Note that this will also find the first 10 digits of an 11 digit number. To search anywhere in the string for exactly 10 consecutive digits and not more you can use negative lookarounds:

@"(?<!\d)\d{10}(?!\d)"

Get a substring of a char*

Assuming you know the position and the length of the substring:

char *buff = "this is a test string";
printf("%.*s", 4, buff + 10);

You could achieve the same thing by copying the substring to another memory destination, but it's not reasonable since you already have it in memory.

This is a good example of avoiding unnecessary copying by using pointers.

Float a div above page content

You want to use absolute positioning.

An absolute position element is positioned relative to the first parent element that has a position other than static. If no such element is found, the containing block is html

For instance :

.yourDiv{
  position:absolute;
  top: 123px;
}

To get it to work, the parent needs to be relative (position:relative)

In your case this should do the trick:

.suggestionsBox{position:absolute; top:40px;}
#specific_locations_add{position:relative;}

How to git reset --hard a subdirectory?

For the case of simply discarding changes, the git checkout -- path/ or git checkout HEAD -- path/ commands suggested by other answers work great. However, when you wish to reset a directory to a revision other than HEAD, that solution has a significant problem: it doesn't remove files which were deleted in the target revision.

So instead, I have begun using the following command:

git diff --cached commit -- subdir | git apply -R --index

This works by finding the diff between the target commit and the index, then applying that diff in reverse to the working directory and index. Basically, this means that it makes the contents of the index match the contents of the revision you specified. The fact that git diff takes a path argument allows you to limit this effect to a specific file or directory.

Since this command fairly long and I plan on using it frequently, I have set up an alias for it which I named reset-checkout:

git config --global alias.reset-checkout '!f() { git diff --cached "$@" | git apply -R --index; }; f'

You can use it like this:

git reset-checkout 451a9a4 -- path/to/directory

Or just:

git reset-checkout 451a9a4

How do I monitor all incoming http requests?

You might consider running Fiddler as a reverse proxy, you should be able to get clients to connect to Fiddler's address and then forward the requests from Fiddler to your application.

This will require either a bit of port manipulation or client config, depending on what's easier based on your requirements.

Details of how to do it are here: http://www.fiddler2.com/Fiddler/Help/ReverseProxy.asp

Convert LocalDate to LocalDateTime or java.sql.Timestamp

Since Joda is getting faded, someone might want to convert LocaltDate to LocalDateTime in Java 8. In Java 8 LocalDateTime it will give a way to create a LocalDateTime instance using a LocalDate and LocalTime. Check here.

public static LocalDateTime of(LocalDate date, LocalTime time)

Sample would be,

    // just to create a sample LocalDate
    DateTimeFormatter dtf = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("yyyyMMdd");
    LocalDate ld = LocalDate.parse("20180306", dtf);

    // convert ld into a LocalDateTime
    // We need to specify the LocalTime component here as well, it can be any accepted value
    LocalDateTime ldt = LocalDateTime.of(ld, LocalTime.of(0,0)); // 2018-03-06T00:00

Just for reference, For getting the epoch seconds below can be used,

    ZoneId zoneId = ZoneId.systemDefault();
    long epoch = ldt.atZone(zoneId).toEpochSecond();

    // If you only care about UTC
    long epochUTC = ldt.toEpochSecond(ZoneOffset.UTC);

How to add multiple values to a dictionary key in python?

Make the value a list, e.g.

a["abc"] = [1, 2, "bob"]

UPDATE:

There are a couple of ways to add values to key, and to create a list if one isn't already there. I'll show one such method in little steps.

key = "somekey"
a.setdefault(key, [])
a[key].append(1)

Results:

>>> a
{'somekey': [1]}

Next, try:

key = "somekey"
a.setdefault(key, [])
a[key].append(2)

Results:

>>> a
{'somekey': [1, 2]}

The magic of setdefault is that it initializes the value for that key if that key is not defined, otherwise it does nothing. Now, noting that setdefault returns the key you can combine these into a single line:

a.setdefault("somekey",[]).append("bob")

Results:

>>> a
{'somekey': [1, 2, 'bob']}

You should look at the dict methods, in particular the get() method, and do some experiments to get comfortable with this.

Submit two forms with one button

if you want to submit two forms with one button you need to do this:

1- use setTimeout()

2- allow show pop up

<script>
function myFunction() {
setTimeout(function(){ document.getElementById("form1").submit();}, 3000);
setTimeout(function(){ document.getElementById("form2").submit();}, 6000);
}
</script>
<form  target="_blank" id="form1">
<input type="text">
<input type="submit">
</form>
<form target="_blank" id="form2">
<input type="text">
<input type="submit">
</form>

javascript doesn't submit two forms at the same time. we submit two forms with one button not at the same time but after secounds.

edit: when we use this code, browser doesn't allow pop up.
if you use this code for your software like me just set browser for show pop up but if you use it in designing site, browser is a barrier and code doesn't run.

How can I convert a string to boolean in JavaScript?

The `toBoolean' function returns false for null, undefined, '', 'false'. It returns true for any other string:

  if (bool === 'false') bool = false
  return !!bool
}

toBoolean('false') // returns false

I had the same problem with something like

@foreach (var item in Model)
{
    @Html.DisplayFor(m => !item.IsIdle, "BoolIcon")
}

I solved this just by doing

@foreach (var item in Model)
{
    var active = !item.IsIdle;
    @Html.DisplayFor(m => active , "BoolIcon")
}

When you know the trick, it's simple.

The difference is that, in the first case, I passed a method as a parameter whereas in the second case, it's an expression.

How do you run your own code alongside Tkinter's event loop?

The solution posted by Bjorn results in a "RuntimeError: Calling Tcl from different appartment" message on my computer (RedHat Enterprise 5, python 2.6.1). Bjorn might not have gotten this message, since, according to one place I checked, mishandling threading with Tkinter is unpredictable and platform-dependent.

The problem seems to be that app.start() counts as a reference to Tk, since app contains Tk elements. I fixed this by replacing app.start() with a self.start() inside __init__. I also made it so that all Tk references are either inside the function that calls mainloop() or are inside functions that are called by the function that calls mainloop() (this is apparently critical to avoid the "different apartment" error).

Finally, I added a protocol handler with a callback, since without this the program exits with an error when the Tk window is closed by the user.

The revised code is as follows:

# Run tkinter code in another thread

import tkinter as tk
import threading

class App(threading.Thread):

    def __init__(self):
        threading.Thread.__init__(self)
        self.start()

    def callback(self):
        self.root.quit()

    def run(self):
        self.root = tk.Tk()
        self.root.protocol("WM_DELETE_WINDOW", self.callback)

        label = tk.Label(self.root, text="Hello World")
        label.pack()

        self.root.mainloop()

app = App()
print('Now we can continue running code while mainloop runs!')

for i in range(100000):

If you change the ManagementObjectSearcher to the following:

ManagementObjectSearcher searcher =
       new ManagementObjectSearcher("root\\CIMV2",
       @"SELECT * FROM Win32_PnPEntity where DeviceID Like ""USB%""");

So the "GetUSBDevices() looks like this"

static List<USBDeviceInfo> GetUSBDevices()
{
  List<USBDeviceInfo> devices = new List<USBDeviceInfo>();

  ManagementObjectCollection collection;
  using (var searcher = new ManagementObjectSearcher(@"SELECT * FROM Win32_PnPEntity where DeviceID Like ""USB%"""))
    collection = searcher.Get();

  foreach (var device in collection)
  {
    devices.Add(new USBDeviceInfo(
    (string)device.GetPropertyValue("DeviceID"),
    (string)device.GetPropertyValue("PNPDeviceID"),
    (string)device.GetPropertyValue("Description")
    ));
  }

  collection.Dispose();
  return devices;
}

}

Your results will be limited to USB devices (as opposed to all types on your system)

How to efficiently remove duplicates from an array without using Set

What if you create two boolean arrays: 1 for negative values and 1 for positive values and init it all on false.

Then you cycle thorugh the input array and lookup in the arrays if you've encoutered the value already. If not, you add it to the output array and mark it as already used.

Null pointer Exception on .setOnClickListener

Submit is null because it is not part of activity_main.xml

When you call findViewById inside an Activity, it is going to look for a View inside your Activity's layout.

try this instead :

Submit = (Button)loginDialog.findViewById(R.id.Submit);

Another thing : you use

android:layout_below="@+id/LoginTitle"

but what you want is probably

android:layout_below="@id/LoginTitle"

See this question about the difference between @id and @+id.

Is it possible to wait until all javascript files are loaded before executing javascript code?

You can use .getScript() and run your code after it loads:

 $.getScript("my_lovely_script.js", function(){

    alert("Script loaded and executed.");
    // here you can use anything you defined in the loaded script

 });

You can see a better explanation here: How do I include a JavaScript file in another JavaScript file?

How to get values of selected items in CheckBoxList with foreach in ASP.NET C#?

Following suit from the suggestions here, I added an extension method to return a list of the selected items using LINQ for any type that Inherits from System.Web.UI.WebControls.ListControl.

Every ListControl object has an Items property of type ListItemCollection. ListItemCollection exposes a collection of ListItems, each of which have a Selected property.

C Sharp:

public static IEnumerable<ListItem> GetSelectedItems(this ListControl checkBoxList)
{
    return from ListItem li in checkBoxList.Items where li.Selected select li;
}

Visual Basic:

<Extension()> _
Public Function GetSelectedItems(ByVal checkBoxList As ListControl) As IEnumerable(Of ListItem)
    Return From li As ListItem In checkBoxList.Items Where li.Selected
End Function

Then, just use like this in either language:

myCheckBoxList.GetSelectedItems()

How can I jump to class/method definition in Atom text editor?

For Typescript users, the "atom-typescript" package adds a typescript aware symbols view, you can trigger it with Cmd+R, and it works great to jump to methods-

https://atom.io/packages/atom-typescript#alternative-to-symbols-view

Using {% url ??? %} in django templates

Instead of importing the logout_view function, you should provide a string in your urls.py file:

So not (r'^login/', login_view),

but (r'^login/', 'login.views.login_view'),

That is the standard way of doing things. Then you can access the URL in your templates using:

{% url login.views.login_view %}

Byte[] to InputStream or OutputStream

we can convert byte[] array into input stream by using ByteArrayInputStream

String str = "Welcome to awesome Java World";
    byte[] content = str.getBytes();
    int size = content.length;
    InputStream is = null;
    byte[] b = new byte[size];
    is = new ByteArrayInputStream(content);

For full example please check here http://www.onlinecodegeek.com/2015/09/how-to-convert-byte-into-inputstream.html

Find the number of columns in a table

List comprehension with if statement

You got the order wrong. The if should be after the for (unless it is in an if-else ternary operator)

[y for y in a if y not in b]

This would work however:

[y if y not in b else other_value for y in a]

Get WooCommerce product categories from WordPress

            foreach($sub_cats as $sub_category) {
                echo  $sub_category->name ;
            }
        }
    }
}
?>

This will list all the top level categories and subcategories under them hierarchically. do not use the inner query if you just want to display the top level categories. Style it as you like.

Amazon S3 - HTTPS/SSL - Is it possible?

As previously stated, it's not directly possible, but you can set up Apache or nginx + SSL on a EC2 instance, CNAME your desired domain to that, and reverse-proxy to the (non-custom domain) S3 URLs.

Go back button in a page

You can either use:

<button onclick="window.history.back()">Back</button>

or..

<button onclick="window.history.go(-1)">Back</button>

The difference, of course, is back() only goes back 1 page but go() goes back/forward the number of pages you pass as a parameter, relative to your current page.

How do I resolve a TesseractNotFoundError?

I face this same issue. I just use this command that will help me.

sudo apt install tesseract-ocr

Note that this will only work on Ubuntu.
sudo is a Unix exclusive command (Linux, Mac, Rasbian, etc.) while apt is Ubuntu specific.

How do I download a file using VBA (without Internet Explorer)

A modified version of above solution to make it more dynamic.

Nodejs send file in response

You need use Stream to send file (archive) in a response, what is more you have to use appropriate Content-type in your response header.

There is an example function that do it:

const fs = require('fs');

// Where fileName is name of the file and response is Node.js Reponse.
responseFile = (fileName, response) => {
  const filePath = "/path/to/archive.rar" // or any file format

  // Check if file specified by the filePath exists
  fs.exists(filePath, function(exists){
      if (exists) {
        // Content-type is very interesting part that guarantee that
        // Web browser will handle response in an appropriate manner.
        response.writeHead(200, {
          "Content-Type": "application/octet-stream",
          "Content-Disposition": "attachment; filename=" + fileName
        });
        fs.createReadStream(filePath).pipe(response);
      } else {
        response.writeHead(400, {"Content-Type": "text/plain"});
        response.end("ERROR File does not exist");
      }
    });
  }
}

The purpose of the Content-Type field is to describe the data contained in the body fully enough that the receiving user agent can pick an appropriate agent or mechanism to present the data to the user, or otherwise deal with the data in an appropriate manner.

"application/octet-stream" is defined as "arbitrary binary data" in RFC 2046, purpose of this content-type is to be saved to disk - it is what you really need.

"filename=[name of file]" specifies name of file which will be downloaded.

remove / reset inherited css from an element

You could try overwriting the CSS and use auto

I don't think this will work with color specifically, but I ran into an issue where i had a parent property such as

.parent {
   left: 0px;
}

and then I was able to just define my child with something like

.child {
   left: auto;
}

and it effectively "reset" the property.

Load HTML page dynamically into div with jQuery

You can use jQuery's getJSON() or Load(); with the latter, you can reference an existing html file. For more details, see http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/661782/Three-Ways-to-Dynamically-Load-HTML-Content-into-a

Static nested class in Java, why?

There are non-obvious memory retention issues to take into account here. Since a non-static inner class maintains an implicit reference to it's 'outer' class, if an instance of the inner class is strongly referenced, then the outer instance is strongly referenced too. This can lead to some head-scratching when the outer class is not garbage collected, even though it appears that nothing references it.

How do I delete a local repository in git?

That's right, if you're on a mac(unix) you won't see .git in finder(the file browser). You can follow the directions above to delete and there are git commands that allow you to delete files as well(they are sometimes difficult to work with and learn, for example: on making a 'git rm -r ' command you might be prompted with a .git/ not found. Here is the git command specs:

usage: git rm [options] [--] ...

-n, --dry-run         dry run
-q, --quiet do not list removed files
--cached only remove from the index
-f, --force override the up-to-date check
-r                    allow recursive removal
--ignore-unmatch exit with a zero status even if nothing matched

When I had to do this, deleting the objects and refs didn't matter. After I deleted the other files in the .git, I initialized a git repo with 'git init' and it created an empty repo.

Invalid shorthand property initializer

In options object you have used "=" sign to assign value to port but we have to use ":" to assign values to properties in object when using object literal to create an object i.e."{}" ,these curly brackets. Even when you use function expression or create an object inside object you have to use ":" sign. for e.g.:

    var rishabh = {
        class:"final year",
        roll:123,
        percent: function(marks1, marks2, marks3){
                      total = marks1 + marks2 + marks3;
                      this.percentage = total/3 }
                    };

john.percent(85,89,95);
console.log(rishabh.percentage);

here we have to use commas "," after each property. but you can use another style to create and initialize an object.

var john = new Object():
john.father = "raja"; //1st way to assign using dot operator
john["mother"] = "rani";// 2nd way to assign using brackets and key must be string

What is the difference between JDK and JRE?

The answer above (by Pablo) is very right. This is just additional information.

The JRE is, as the name implies, an environment. It's basically a bunch of directories with Java-related files, to wit:

  • bin/ contains Java's executable programs. The most important is java (and for Windows, javaw as well), which launches the JVM. There are some other utilities here as well, such as keytool and policytool.
  • conf/ holds user-editable configuration files for Java experts to play with.
  • lib/ has a large number of supporting files: some .jars, configuration files, property files, fonts, translations, certs, etc. – all the "trimmings" of Java. The most important is modules, a file that contains the .class files of the Java standard library.
  • At a certain level, the Java standard library needs to call into native code. For this purpose, the JRE contains some .dll (Windows) or .dylib (macOS) or .so (Linux) files under bin/ or lib/ with supporting, system-specific native binary code.

The JDK is also a set of directories. It is a superset of the JRE, with some additions:

  • bin/ has been enlarged with development tools. The most important of them is javac; others include jar, javadoc and jshell.
  • jmods/, which holds JMOD files for the standard library, has been added. These files allow the standard library to be used with jlink.

How to get std::vector pointer to the raw data?

How do I add a simple onClick event handler to a canvas element?

You can also put DOM elements, like div on top of the canvas that would represent your canvas elements and be positioned the same way.

Now you can attach event listeners to these divs and run the necessary actions.

How can I convert a Word document to PDF?

It's already 2019, I can't believe still no easiest and conveniencest way to convert the most popular Micro$oft Word document to Adobe PDF format in Java world.

I almost tried every method the above answers mentioned, and I found the best and the only way can satisfy my requirement is by using OpenOffice or LibreOffice. Actually I am not exactly know the difference between them, seems both of them provide soffice command line.

My requirement is:

  1. It must run on Linux, more specifically CentOS, not on Windows, thus we cannot install Microsoft Office on it;
  2. It must support Chinese character, so ISO-8859-1 character encoding is not a choice, it must support Unicode.

First thing came in mind is doc-to-pdf-converter, but it lacks of maintenance, last update happened 4 years ago, I will not use a nobody-maintain-solution. Xdocreport seems a promising choice, but it can only convert docx, but not doc binary file which is mandatory for me. Using Java to call OpenOffice API seems good, but too complicated for such a simple requirement.

Finally I found the best solution: use OpenOffice command line to finish the job:

Runtime.getRuntime().exec("soffice --convert-to pdf -outdir . /path/some.doc");

I always believe the shortest code is the best code (of course it should be understandable), that's it.

Django MEDIA_URL and MEDIA_ROOT

Following the steps mentioned above for =>3.0 for Debug mode

urlpatterns = [
...
]
+ static(settings.MEDIA_URL, document_root=settings.MEDIA_ROOT)

And also the part that caught me out, the above static URL only worked in my main project urls.py file. I was first attempting to add to my app, and wondering why I couldn't see the images.

Lastly make sure you set the following:

MEDIA_ROOT = os.path.join(BASE_DIR, 'media')
MEDIA_URL = '/media/'

How to use sed to replace only the first occurrence in a file?

i would do this with an awk script:

BEGIN {i=0}
(i==0) && /#include/ {print "#include \"newfile.h\""; i=1}
{print $0}
END {}

then run it with awk:

awk -f awkscript headerfile.h > headerfilenew.h

might be sloppy, I'm new to this.

How to use AND in IF Statement

If you are simply looking for the occurrence of "Miami" or "Florida" inside a string (since you put * at both ends), it's probably better to use the InStr function instead of Like. Not only are the results more predictable, but I believe you'll get better performance.

Also, VBA is not short-circuited so when you use the AND keyword, it will test both sides of the AND, regardless if the first test failed or not. In VBA, it is more optimal to use 2 if-statements in these cases, that way you aren't checking for "Florida" if you don't find "Miami".

The other advice I have is that a for-each loop is faster than a for-loop. Using .offset, you can achieve the same thing, but with better effeciency. Of course there are even better ways (like variant arrays), but those will add a layer of complexity not needed in this example.

Here is some sample code:

Sub test()

Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Dim lastRow As Long
Dim cell As Range
lastRow = Range("A" & Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row

For Each cell In Range("A1:A" & lastRow)
    If InStr(1, cell.Value, "Miami") <> 0 Then
        If InStr(1, cell.Offset(, 3).Value, "Florida") <> 0 Then
            cell.Offset(, 2).Value = "BA"
        End If
    End If
Next

Application.ScreenUpdating = True
End Sub

I hope you find some of this helpful, and keep at it with VBA! ^^

How to group subarrays by a column value?

How to sort List of objects by some property

In java8+ this can be written in single line as follows:

collectionObjec.sort(comparator_lamda) or comparator.comparing(CollectionType::getterOfProperty)

code:

ListOfActiveAlarmObj.sort((a,b->a.getTimeStarted().compareTo(b.getTimeStarted())))

or

ListOfActiveAlarmObj.sort(Comparator.comparing(ActiveAlarm::getTimeStarted))

HTML - Display image after selecting filename

This can be done using HTML5, but will only work in browsers that support it. Here's an example.

Bear in mind you'll need an alternative method for browsers that don't support this. I've had a lot of success with this plugin, which takes a lot of the work out of your hands.

How to increase MaximumErrorCount in SQL Server 2008 Jobs or Packages?

It is important to highlight that the Property (MaximumErrorCount) that needs to be changed must be set as more than 0 (which is the default) in the Package level and not in the specific control that is showing the error (I tried this and it does not work!)

Be sure that in the Properties Window, the Pull down menu is set to "Package", then look for the property MaximumErrorCount to change it.

How to calculate an angle from three points?

my angle demo program

Recently, I too have the same problem... In Delphi It's very similar to Objective-C.

procedure TForm1.FormPaint(Sender: TObject);
var ARect: TRect;
    AWidth, AHeight: Integer;
    ABasePoint: TPoint;
    AAngle: Extended;
begin
  FCenter := Point(Width div 2, Height div 2);
  AWidth := Width div 4;
  AHeight := Height div 4;
  ABasePoint := Point(FCenter.X+AWidth, FCenter.Y);
  ARect := Rect(Point(FCenter.X - AWidth, FCenter.Y - AHeight),
    Point(FCenter.X + AWidth, FCenter.Y + AHeight));
  AAngle := ArcTan2(ClickPoint.Y-Center.Y, ClickPoint.X-Center.X) * 180 / pi;
  AngleLabel.Caption := Format('Angle is %5.2f', [AAngle]);
  Canvas.Ellipse(ARect);
  Canvas.MoveTo(FCenter.X, FCenter.Y);
  Canvas.LineTo(FClickPoint.X, FClickPoint.Y);
  Canvas.MoveTo(FCenter.X, FCenter.Y);
  Canvas.LineTo(ABasePoint.X, ABasePoint.Y);
end;

Create ArrayList from array

(old thread, but just 2 cents as none mention Guava or other libs and some other details)

If You Can, Use Guava

It's worth pointing out the Guava way, which greatly simplifies these shenanigans:

Usage

For an Immutable List

Use the ImmutableList class and its of() and copyOf() factory methods (elements can't be null):

List<String> il = ImmutableList.of("string", "elements");  // from varargs
List<String> il = ImmutableList.copyOf(aStringArray);      // from array

For A Mutable List

Use the Lists class and its newArrayList() factory methods:

List<String> l1 = Lists.newArrayList(anotherListOrCollection);    // from collection
List<String> l2 = Lists.newArrayList(aStringArray);               // from array
List<String> l3 = Lists.newArrayList("or", "string", "elements"); // from varargs

Please also note the similar methods for other data structures in other classes, for instance in Sets.

Why Guava?

The main attraction could be to reduce the clutter due to generics for type-safety, as the use of the Guava factory methods allow the types to be inferred most of the time. However, this argument holds less water since Java 7 arrived with the new diamond operator.

But it's not the only reason (and Java 7 isn't everywhere yet): the shorthand syntax is also very handy, and the methods initializers, as seen above, allow to write more expressive code. You do in one Guava call what takes 2 with the current Java Collections.

If You Can't...

For an Immutable List

Use the JDK's Arrays class and its asList() factory method, wrapped with a Collections.unmodifiableList():

List<String> l1 = Collections.unmodifiableList(Arrays.asList(anArrayOfElements));
List<String> l2 = Collections.unmodifiableList(Arrays.asList("element1", "element2"));

Note that the returned type for asList() is a List using a concrete ArrayList implementation, but it is NOT java.util.ArrayList. It's an inner type, which emulates an ArrayList but actually directly references the passed array and makes it "write through" (modifications are reflected in the array).

It forbids modifications through some of the List API's methods by way of simply extending an AbstractList (so, adding or removing elements is unsupported), however it allows calls to set() to override elements. Thus this list isn't truly immutable and a call to asList() should be wrapped with Collections.unmodifiableList().

See the next step if you need a mutable list.

For a Mutable List

Same as above, but wrapped with an actual java.util.ArrayList:

List<String> l1  = new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList(array));    // Java 1.5 to 1.6
List<String> l1b = new ArrayList<>(Arrays.asList(array));          // Java 1.7+
List<String> l2  = new ArrayList<String>(Arrays.asList("a", "b")); // Java 1.5 to 1.6
List<String> l2b = new ArrayList<>(Arrays.asList("a", "b"));       // Java 1.7+

For Educational Purposes: The Good ol' Manual Way

// for Java 1.5+
static <T> List<T> arrayToList(final T[] array) {
  final List<T> l = new ArrayList<T>(array.length);

  for (final T s : array) {
    l.add(s);
  }
  return (l);
}

// for Java < 1.5 (no generics, no compile-time type-safety, boo!)
static List arrayToList(final Object[] array) {
  final List l = new ArrayList(array.length);

  for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++) {
    l.add(array[i]);
  }
  return (l);
}

Getting the error "Java.lang.IllegalStateException Activity has been destroyed" when using tabs with ViewPager

I'm having exactly the same problem. The only workaround I've found, is to replace the fragments by a new instance, each time the tabs are changed.

ft.replace(R.id.fragment_container, Fragment.instantiate(PlayerMainActivity.this, fragment.getClass().getName()));

Not a real solution, but i haven't found a way to reuse the previous fragment instance...

    chargify.apiKey = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Chargify.apiKey"];
    chargify.Password = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Chargify.apiPassword"];
    chargify.URL = ConfigurationManager.AppSettings["Chargify.url"];

    // Without this an error will be thrown.
    chargify.ProtocolType = SecurityProtocolType.Tls12;

    return chargify;
}

What is the purpose of the vshost.exe file?

The vshost.exe file is the executable run by Visual Studio (Visual Studio host executable). This is the executable that links to Visual Studio and improves debugging.

When you're distributing your application to others, you do not use the vshost.exe or .pdb (debug database) files.

Redefining the Index in a Pandas DataFrame object

Why don't you simply use set_index method?

In : col = ['a','b','c']

In : data = DataFrame([[1,2,3],[10,11,12],[20,21,22]],columns=col)

In : data
Out:
    a   b   c
0   1   2   3
1  10  11  12
2  20  21  22

In : data2 = data.set_index('a')

In : data2
Out:
     b   c
a
1    2   3
10  11  12
20  21  22

Why calling react setState method doesn't mutate the state immediately?

From React's documentation:

setState() does not immediately mutate this.state but creates a pending state transition. Accessing this.state after calling this method can potentially return the existing value. There is no guarantee of synchronous operation of calls to setState and calls may be batched for performance gains.

If you want a function to be executed after the state change occurs, pass it in as a callback.

this.setState({value: event.target.value}, function () {
    console.log(this.state.value);
});

Send POST data using XMLHttpRequest

There's some duplicates that touch on this, and nobody really expounds on it. I'll borrow the accepted answer example to illustrate

http.open('POST', url, true);
http.send('lorem=ipsum&name=binny');

I oversimplified this (I use http.onload(function() {}) instead of that answer's older methodology) for the sake of illustration. If you use this as-is, you'll find your server is probably interpreting the POST body as a string and not actual key=value parameters (i.e. PHP won't show any $_POST variables). You must pass the form header in to get that, and do that before http.send()

http.setRequestHeader('Content-type', 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded');

If you're using JSON and not URL-encoded data, pass application/json instead

What is stability in sorting algorithms and why is it important?

A sorting algorithm is said to be stable if two objects with equal keys appear in the same order in sorted output as they appear in the input array to be sorted. Some sorting algorithms are stable by nature like Insertion sort, Merge Sort, Bubble Sort, etc. And some sorting algorithms are not, like Heap Sort, Quick Sort, etc.

Background: a "stable" sorting algorithm keeps the items with the same sorting key in order. Suppose we have a list of 5-letter words:

peach
straw
apple
spork

If we sort the list by just the first letter of each word then a stable-sort would produce:

apple
peach
straw
spork

In an unstable sort algorithm, straw or spork may be interchanged, but in a stable one, they stay in the same relative positions (that is, since straw appears before spork in the input, it also appears before spork in the output).

We could sort the list of words using this algorithm: stable sorting by column 5, then 4, then 3, then 2, then 1. In the end, it will be correctly sorted. Convince yourself of that. (by the way, that algorithm is called radix sort)

Now to answer your question, suppose we have a list of first and last names. We are asked to sort "by last name, then by first". We could first sort (stable or unstable) by the first name, then stable sort by the last name. After these sorts, the list is primarily sorted by the last name. However, where last names are the same, the first names are sorted.

You can't stack unstable sorts in the same fashion.

how to open .mat file without using MATLAB?

A .mat-file is a compressed binary file. It is not possible to open it with a text editor (except you have a special plugin as Dennis Jaheruddin says). Otherwise you will have to convert it into a text file (csv for example) with a script. This could be done by python for example: Read .mat files in Python.

Set initial focus in an Android application

Use the code below,

TableRow _tableRow =(TableRow)findViewById(R.id.tableRowMainBody);
tableRow.requestFocus();

that should work.

Why does LayoutInflater ignore the layout_width and layout_height layout parameters I've specified?

I've investigated this issue, referring to the LayoutInflater docs and setting up a small sample demonstration project. The following tutorials shows how to dynamically populate a layout using LayoutInflater.

Before we get started see what LayoutInflater.inflate() parameters look like:

  • resource: ID for an XML layout resource to load (e.g., R.layout.main_page)
  • root: Optional view to be the parent of the generated hierarchy (if attachToRoot is true), or else simply an object that provides a set of LayoutParams values for root of the returned hierarchy (if attachToRoot is false.)
  • attachToRoot: Whether the inflated hierarchy should be attached to the root parameter? If false, root is only used to create the correct subclass of LayoutParams for the root view in the XML.

  • Returns: The root View of the inflated hierarchy. If root was supplied and attachToRoot is true, this is root; otherwise it is the root of the inflated XML file.

Now for the sample layout and code.

Main layout (main.xml):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:id="@+id/container"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent">
</LinearLayout>

Added into this container is a separate TextView, visible as small red square if layout parameters are successfully applied from XML (red.xml):

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:layout_width="25dp"
    android:layout_height="25dp"
    android:background="#ff0000"
    android:text="red" />

Now LayoutInflater is used with several variations of call parameters

public class InflaterTest extends Activity {

    private View view;

    @Override
    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
      super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

      setContentView(R.layout.main);
      ViewGroup parent = (ViewGroup) findViewById(R.id.container);

      // result: layout_height=wrap_content layout_width=match_parent
      view = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.red, null);
      parent.addView(view);

      // result: layout_height=100 layout_width=100
      view = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.red, null);
      parent.addView(view, 100, 100);

      // result: layout_height=25dp layout_width=25dp
      // view=textView due to attachRoot=false
      view = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.red, parent, false);
      parent.addView(view);

      // result: layout_height=25dp layout_width=25dp
      // parent.addView not necessary as this is already done by attachRoot=true
      // view=root due to parent supplied as hierarchy root and attachRoot=true
      view = LayoutInflater.from(this).inflate(R.layout.red, parent, true);
    }
}

The actual results of the parameter variations are documented in the code.

SYNOPSIS: Calling LayoutInflater without specifying root leads to inflate call ignoring the layout parameters from the XML. Calling inflate with root not equal null and attachRoot=true does load the layout parameters, but returns the root object again, which prevents further layout changes to the loaded object (unless you can find it using findViewById()). The calling convention you most likely would like to use is therefore this one:

loadedView = LayoutInflater.from(context)
                .inflate(R.layout.layout_to_load, parent, false);

To help with layout issues, the Layout Inspector is highly recommended.

Change the column label? e.g.: change column "A" to column "Name"

I would like to present another answer to this as the currently accepted answer doesn't work for me (I use LibreOffice). This solution should work in Excel, LibreOffice and OpenOffice:

First, insert a new row at the beginning of the sheet. Within that row, define the names you need: new row

Then, in the menu bar, go to View -> Freeze Cells -> Freeze First Row. It'll look like this now: new top row

Now whenever you scroll down in the document, the first row will be "pinned" to the top: new behaviour

Python - Convert a bytes array into JSON format

To convert this bytesarray directly to json, you could first convert the bytesarray to a string with decode(), utf-8 is standard. Change the quotation markers.. The last step is to remove the " from the dumped string, to change the json object from string to list.

dumps(s.decode()).replace("'", '"')[1:-1]

Case insensitive std::string.find()

Since you're doing substring searches (std::string) and not element (character) searches, there's unfortunately no existing solution I'm aware of that's immediately accessible in the standard library to do this.

Nevertheless, it's easy enough to do: simply convert both strings to upper case (or both to lower case - I chose upper in this example).

std::string upper_string(const std::string& str)
{
    string upper;
    transform(str.begin(), str.end(), std::back_inserter(upper), toupper);
    return upper;
}

std::string::size_type find_str_ci(const std::string& str, const std::string& substr)
{
    return upper(str).find(upper(substr) );
}

This is not a fast solution (bordering into pessimization territory) but it's the only one I know of off-hand. It's also not that hard to implement your own case-insensitive substring finder if you are worried about efficiency.

Additionally, I need to support std::wstring/wchar_t. Any ideas?

tolower/toupper in locale will work on wide-strings as well, so the solution above should be just as applicable (simple change std::string to std::wstring).

[Edit] An alternative, as pointed out, is to adapt your own case-insensitive string type from basic_string by specifying your own character traits. This works if you can accept all string searches, comparisons, etc. to be case-insensitive for a given string type.

Which comes first in a 2D array, rows or columns?

In java the rows are done first, because a 2 dimension array is considered two separate arrays. Starts with the first row 1 dimension array.

how to change attribute "hidden" in jquery

A. Wolff was leading you in the right direction. There are several attributes where you should not be setting a string value. You must toggle it with a boolean true or false.

.attr("hidden", false) will remove the attribute the same as using .removeAttr("hidden").

.attr("hidden", "false") is incorrect and the tag remains hidden.

You should not be setting hidden, checked, selected, or several others to any string value to toggle it.

How to install SQL Server 2005 Express in Windows 8

I had a different experience loading SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows 8. I was using the installer that already had SP4 applied so maybe that explains the difference. The first error I received was when Setup tried to start the SQL VSS Writer. I just told it to Ignore and it continued. I then ran into the same error Sohail had where the SQL Server service failed to start. There was no point in following the rest of Sohail's method since I already was using a SP4 version of SQLServr.exe and SQLOS.dll. Instead, I just canceled the install rebooted the machine and ran the install again. Everything ran fine the second time around.

The place I found Sohail's technique invaluable was when I needed to install SQL Server 2005 Standard on Windows Server 2012. We have a few new servers we're looking to roll out with Windows 2012 but we didn't feel the need to upgrade SQL Server since the 2005 version has all the functionality we need and the cost to license SQL 2012 on these boxes would have been a 5-figure sum.

I wound up tweaking Sohail's technique a bit by adding steps to revert the SQLServr.exe and SQLOS.dll files so that I could then apply SP4 fully. Below are all the steps I took starting from a scratch install of Windows Server 2012 Standard. I hope this helps anyone else looking to get a fully updated install of SQL Server 2005 x64 on this OS.

  1. Use Server Manger Add roles and features wizard to satisfy all of SQL's prerequisites:
    • Select the Web Server (IIS) Role
    • Add the following additional Web Server Role Services (note that some of these will automatically pull in others, just accept and move on):
      • HTTP Redirection
      • Windows Authentication
      • ASP.NET 3.5 (note that you'll need to tell the wizard to look in the \Sources\SxS folder of the Windows 2012 installation media for this to install properly; just click the link to "Specify an alternate source path" before clicking Install)
      • IIS 6 Metabase Compatibility
      • IIS 6 WMI Compatibility
  2. Start SQL Server 2005 Install, ignoring any compatibility warnings
    • If SQL Server service fails to start during setup, leave dialog up and do the following:
      • Backup SQLServr.exe and SQLOS.dll from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn
      • Replace those two files from a working copy of SQL Server 2005 that already has had SP4 applied
      • Return to setup, hit Retry and setup will now run to completion.
      • Stop SQL Service and restore orignal versions of SQLServr.exe and SQLOS.dll (or else SP4 doesn't think it is needed in the next step)
  3. Install SQL Server 2005 SP4
  4. Install SQL Server 2005 SP4 Cumulative Hotfix 5069 (Windows Update wasn't offering this for some reason so I had to download and install manually)
  5. If you want the latest documentation, install the latest version of SQL Server 2005 Books Online.

How to indent a few lines in Markdown markup?

This is an old thread, but I would have thought markdown's blockquotes ('> ') would be best for this:

How do I solve the "server DNS address could not be found" error on Windows 10?

Steps to manually configure DNS:

  1. You can access Network and Sharing center by right clicking on the Network icon on the taskbar.

  2. Now choose adapter settings from the side menu.

  3. This will give you a list of the available network adapters in the system . From them right click on the adapter you are using to connect to the internet now and choose properties option.

  4. In the networking tab choose ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)’.

  5. Now you can see the properties dialogue box showing the properties of IPV4. Here you need to change some properties.

    Select ‘use the following DNS address’ option. Now fill the following fields as given here.

    Preferred DNS server: 208.67.222.222

    Alternate DNS server : 208.67.220.220

    This is an available Open DNS address. You may also use google DNS server addresses.

    After filling these fields. Check the ‘validate settings upon exit’ option. Now click OK.

You have to add this DNS server address in the router configuration also (by referring the router manual for more information).

Refer : for above method & alternative

If none of this works, then open command prompt(Run as Administrator) and run these:

ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
NETSH winsock reset catalog
NETSH int ipv4 reset reset.log
NETSH int ipv6 reset reset.log
Exit

Hopefully that fixes it, if its still not fixed there is a chance that its a NIC related issue(driver update or h/w).

Also FYI, this has a thread on Microsoft community : Windows 10 - DNS Issue

Add new column in Pandas DataFrame Python

You just do an opposite comparison. if Col2 <= 1. This will return a boolean Series with False values for those greater than 1 and True values for the other. If you convert it to an int64 dtype, True becomes 1 and False become 0,

df['Col3'] = (df['Col2'] <= 1).astype(int)

If you want a more general solution, where you can assign any number to Col3 depending on the value of Col2 you should do something like:

df['Col3'] = df['Col2'].map(lambda x: 42 if x > 1 else 55)

Or:

df['Col3'] = 0
condition = df['Col2'] > 1
df.loc[condition, 'Col3'] = 42
df.loc[~condition, 'Col3'] = 55

JavaScript: Collision detection

bcm's answer, which has 0 votes at this time, is actually a great, under-appreciated answer. It uses good old Pythagoras to detect when objects are closer than their combined bounding circles. Simple collision detection often uses rectangular collision detection, which is fine if your sprites tend to be, well, rectangular. If they are circular (or otherwise less than rectangular), such as a ball, an asteroid, or any other shape where the extreme corners are usually transparent, you may find this efficient routine to be the most accurate.

But for clarity, here is a more fully realized version of the code:

function doCollide(x1, y1, w1, x2, y2, w2) {
    var xd = x1 - x2;
    var yd = y1 - y2;
    var wt = w2 + w1;
    return (xd * xd + yd * yd <= wt * wt);
}

Where the parameters to pass in are the x,y and width values of two different sprite objects.

How do you use subprocess.check_output() in Python?

Since Python 3.5, subprocess.run() is recommended over subprocess.check_output():

>>> subprocess.run(['cat','/tmp/text.txt'], stdout=subprocess.PIPE).stdout
b'First line\nSecond line\n'

Since Python 3.7, instead of the above, you can use capture_output=true parameter to capture stdout and stderr:

>>> subprocess.run(['cat','/tmp/text.txt'], capture_output=True).stdout
b'First line\nSecond line\n'

Also, you may want to use universal_newlines=True or its equivalent since Python 3.7 text=True to work with text instead of binary:

>>> stdout = subprocess.run(['cat', '/tmp/text.txt'], capture_output=True, text=True).stdout
>>> print(stdout)
First line
Second line

See subprocess.run() documentation for more information.

Invalid character in identifier

A little bit late but I got the same error and I realized that it was because I copied some code from a PDF. Check the difference between these two: - - The first one is from hitting the minus sign on keyboard and the second is from a latex generated PDF.

What is the difference between a string and a byte string?

The only thing that a computer can store is bytes.

To store anything in a computer, you must first encode it, i.e. convert it to bytes. For example:

  • If you want to store music, you must first encode it using MP3, WAV, etc.
  • If you want to store a picture, you must first encode it using PNG, JPEG, etc.
  • If you want to store text, you must first encode it using ASCII, UTF-8, etc.

MP3, WAV, PNG, JPEG, ASCII and UTF-8 are examples of encodings. An encoding is a format to represent audio, images, text, etc in bytes.

In Python, a byte string is just that: a sequence of bytes. It isn't human-readable. Under the hood, everything must be converted to a byte string before it can be stored in a computer.

On the other hand, a character string, often just called a "string", is a sequence of characters. It is human-readable. A character string can't be directly stored in a computer, it has to be encoded first (converted into a byte string). There are multiple encodings through which a character string can be converted into a byte string, such as ASCII and UTF-8.

'I am a string'.encode('ASCII')

The above Python code will encode the string 'I am a string' using the encoding ASCII. The result of the above code will be a byte string. If you print it, Python will represent it as b'I am a string'. Remember, however, that byte strings aren't human-readable, it's just that Python decodes them from ASCII when you print them. In Python, a byte string is represented by a b, followed by the byte string's ASCII representation.

A byte string can be decoded back into a character string, if you know the encoding that was used to encode it.

b'I am a string'.decode('ASCII')

The above code will return the original string 'I am a string'.

Encoding and decoding are inverse operations. Everything must be encoded before it can be written to disk, and it must be decoded before it can be read by a human.

PHP reindex array?

This might not be the simplest answer as compared to using array_values().

Try this

$array = array( 0 => 'string1', 2 => 'string2', 4 => 'string3', 5 => 'string4');
$arrays =$array;
print_r($array);
$array=array();
$i=0;
    foreach($arrays as $k => $item)
    {
    $array[$i]=$item;
        unset($arrays[$k]);
        $i++;

    }

print_r($array);

Change line width of lines in matplotlib pyplot legend

@ImportanceOfBeingErnest 's answer is good if you only want to change the linewidth inside the legend box. But I think it is a bit more complex since you have to copy the handles before changing legend linewidth. Besides, it can not change the legend label fontsize. The following two methods can not only change the linewidth but also the legend label text font size in a more concise way.

Method 1

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

# make some data
x = np.linspace(0, 2*np.pi)

y1 = np.sin(x)
y2 = np.cos(x)

# plot sin(x) and cos(x)
fig = plt.figure()
ax  = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.plot(x, y1, c='b', label='y1')
ax.plot(x, y2, c='r', label='y2')

leg = plt.legend()
# get the individual lines inside legend and set line width
for line in leg.get_lines():
    line.set_linewidth(4)
# get label texts inside legend and set font size
for text in leg.get_texts():
    text.set_fontsize('x-large')

plt.savefig('leg_example')
plt.show()

Method 2

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

# make some data
x = np.linspace(0, 2*np.pi)

y1 = np.sin(x)
y2 = np.cos(x)

# plot sin(x) and cos(x)
fig = plt.figure()
ax  = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.plot(x, y1, c='b', label='y1')
ax.plot(x, y2, c='r', label='y2')

leg = plt.legend()
# get the lines and texts inside legend box
leg_lines = leg.get_lines()
leg_texts = leg.get_texts()
# bulk-set the properties of all lines and texts
plt.setp(leg_lines, linewidth=4)
plt.setp(leg_texts, fontsize='x-large')
plt.savefig('leg_example')
plt.show()

The above two methods produce the same output image:

Speed up rsync with Simultaneous/Concurrent File Transfers?

The shortest version I found is to use the --cat option of parallel like below. This version avoids using xargs, only relying on features of parallel:

cat files.txt | \
  parallel -n 500 --lb --pipe --cat rsync --files-from={} user@remote:/dir /dir -avPi

#### Arg explainer
# -n 500           :: split input into chunks of 500 entries
#
# --cat :: create a tmp file referenced by {} containing the 500
# entry content for each process
#
# user@remote:/dir :: the root relative to which entries in files.txt are considered
#
# /dir :: local root relative to which files are copied

Sample content from files.txt:

/dir/file-1
/dir/subdir/file-2
....

Note that this doesn't use -j 50 for job count, that didn't work on my end here. Instead I've used -n 500 for record count per job, calculated as a reasonable number given the total number of records.

Is there any way to show a countdown on the lockscreen of iphone?

There is no way to display interactive elements on the lockscreen or wallpaper with a non jailbroken iPhone.

I would recommend Countdown Widget it's free an you can display countdowns in the notification center which you can also access from your lockscreen.

How to check the function's return value if true or false

Wrong syntax. You can't compare a Boolean to a string like "false" or "true". In your case, just test it's inverse:

if(!ValidateForm()) { ...

You could test against the constant false, but it's rather ugly and generally frowned upon:

if(ValidateForm() == false) { ...

text-align:center won't work with form <label> tag (?)

label is an inline element so its width is equal to the width of the text it contains. The browser is actually displaying the label with text-align:center but since the label is only as wide as the text you don't notice.

The best thing to do is to apply a specific width to the label that is greater than the width of the content - this will give you the results you want.

How to prevent "The play() request was interrupted by a call to pause()" error?

Depending on how complex you want your solution, this may be useful:

var currentPromise=false; //Keeps track of active Promise

function playAudio(n){
    if(!currentPromise){    //normal behavior
        n.pause();
        n.currentTime = 0;
        currentPromise = n.play();    //Calls play. Will store a Promise object in newer versions of chrome;
                                      //stores undefined in other browsers
        if(currentPromise){    //Promise exists
            currentPromise.then(function(){ //handle Promise completion
                promiseComplete(n);
            });
        }
    }else{ //Wait for promise to complete
        //Store additional information to be called
        currentPromise.calledAgain = true;
    }
}

function promiseComplete(n){
    var callAgain = currentPromise.calledAgain;    //get stored information
    currentPromise = false; //reset currentPromise variable
    if(callAgain){
        playAudio(n);
    }
}

This is a bit overkill, but helps when handling a Promise in unique scenarios.

How do I tell Maven to use the latest version of a dependency?

Unlike others I think there are many reasons why you might always want the latest version. Particularly if you are doing continuous deployment (we sometimes have like 5 releases in a day) and don't want to do a multi-module project.

What I do is make Hudson/Jenkins do the following for every build:

mvn clean versions:use-latest-versions scm:checkin deploy -Dmessage="update versions" -DperformRelease=true

That is I use the versions plugin and scm plugin to update the dependencies and then check it in to source control. Yes I let my CI do SCM checkins (which you have to do anyway for the maven release plugin).

You'll want to setup the versions plugin to only update what you want:

<plugin>
    <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
    <artifactId>versions-maven-plugin</artifactId>
    <version>1.2</version>
    <configuration>
        <includesList>com.snaphop</includesList>
        <generateBackupPoms>false</generateBackupPoms>
        <allowSnapshots>true</allowSnapshots>
    </configuration>
</plugin>

I use the release plugin to do the release which takes care of -SNAPSHOT and validates that there is a release version of -SNAPSHOT (which is important).

If you do what I do you will get the latest version for all snapshot builds and the latest release version for release builds. Your builds will also be reproducible.

Update

I noticed some comments asking some specifics of this workflow. I will say we don't use this method anymore and the big reason why is the maven versions plugin is buggy and in general is inherently flawed.

It is flawed because to run the versions plugin to adjust versions all the existing versions need to exist for the pom to run correctly. That is the versions plugin cannot update to the latest version of anything if it can't find the version referenced in the pom. This is actually rather annoying as we often cleanup old versions for disk space reasons.

Really you need a separate tool from maven to adjust the versions (so you don't depend on the pom file to run correctly). I have written such a tool in the the lowly language that is Bash. The script will update the versions like the version plugin and check the pom back into source control. It also runs like 100x faster than the mvn versions plugin. Unfortunately it isn't written in a manner for public usage but if people are interested I could make it so and put it in a gist or github.

Going back to workflow as some comments asked about that this is what we do:

  1. We have 20 or so projects in their own repositories with their own jenkins jobs
  2. When we release the maven release plugin is used. The workflow of that is covered in the plugin's documentation. The maven release plugin sort of sucks (and I'm being kind) but it does work. One day we plan on replacing this method with something more optimal.
  3. When one of the projects gets released jenkins then runs a special job we will call the update all versions job (how jenkins knows its a release is a complicated manner in part because the maven jenkins release plugin is pretty crappy as well).
  4. The update all versions job knows about all the 20 projects. It is actually an aggregator pom to be specific with all the projects in the modules section in dependency order. Jenkins runs our magic groovy/bash foo that will pull all the projects update the versions to the latest and then checkin the poms (again done in dependency order based on the modules section).
  5. For each project if the pom has changed (because of a version change in some dependency) it is checked in and then we immediately ping jenkins to run the corresponding job for that project (this is to preserve build dependency order otherwise you are at the mercy of the SCM Poll scheduler).

At this point I'm of the opinion it is a good thing to have the release and auto version a separate tool from your general build anyway.

Now you might think maven sort of sucks because of the problems listed above but this actually would be fairly difficult with a build tool that does not have a declarative easy to parse extendable syntax (aka XML).

In fact we add custom XML attributes through namespaces to help hint bash/groovy scripts (e.g. don't update this version).

How can I change Mac OS's default Java VM returned from /usr/libexec/java_home

I had a similar situation, and the following process worked for me:

  1. In the terminal, type

    vi ~/.profile

  2. Then add this line in the file, and save

    export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk<version>.jdk/Contents/Home

    where version is the one on your computer, such as 1.7.0_25

  3. Exit the editor, then type the following command make it become effective

    source ~/.profile

Then type java -version to check the result

    java -version

What is .profile? From:http://computers.tutsplus.com/tutorials/speed-up-your-terminal-workflow-with-command-aliases-and-profile--mac-30515

.profile file is a hidden file. It is an optional file which tells the system which commands to run when the user whose profile file it is logs in. For example, if my username is bruno and there is a .profile file in /Users/bruno/, all of its contents will be executed during the log-in procedure.

What is a semaphore?

This is an old question but one of the most interesting uses of semaphore is a read/write lock and it has not been explicitly mentioned.

The r/w locks works in simple fashion: consume one permit for a reader and all permits for writers. Indeed, a trivial implementation of a r/w lock but requires metadata modification on read (actually twice) that can become a bottle neck, still significantly better than a mutex or lock.

Another downside is that writers can be started rather easily as well unless the semaphore is a fair one or the writes acquire permits in multiple requests, in such case they need an explicit mutex between themselves.

Toggle Class in React

You have to use the component's State to update component parameters such as Class Name if you want React to render your DOM correctly and efficiently.

UPDATE: I updated the example to toggle the Sidemenu on a button click. This is not necessary, but you can see how it would work. You might need to use "this.state" vs. "this.props" as I have shown. I'm used to working with Redux components.

constructor(props){
    super(props);
}

getInitialState(){
  return {"showHideSidenav":"hidden"};
}

render() {
    return (
        <div className="header">
            <i className="border hide-on-small-and-down"></i>
            <div className="container">
                <a ref="btn" onClick={this.toggleSidenav.bind(this)} href="#" className="btn-menu show-on-small"><i></i></a>
                <Menu className="menu hide-on-small-and-down"/>
                <Sidenav className={this.props.showHideSidenav}/>
            </div>
        </div>
    )
}

toggleSidenav() {
    var css = (this.props.showHideSidenav === "hidden") ? "show" : "hidden";
    this.setState({"showHideSidenav":css});
}

Now, when you toggle the state, the component will update and change the class name of the sidenav component. You can use CSS to show/hide the sidenav using the class names.

.hidden {
   display:none;
}
.show{
   display:block;
}

How to filter array in subdocument with MongoDB

Using aggregate is the right approach, but you need to $unwind the list array before applying the $match so that you can filter individual elements and then use $group to put it back together:

db.test.aggregate([
    { $match: {_id: ObjectId("512e28984815cbfcb21646a7")}},
    { $unwind: '$list'},
    { $match: {'list.a': {$gt: 3}}},
    { $group: {_id: '$_id', list: {$push: '$list.a'}}}
])

outputs:

{
  "result": [
    {
      "_id": ObjectId("512e28984815cbfcb21646a7"),
      "list": [
        4,
        5
      ]
    }
  ],
  "ok": 1
}

MongoDB 3.2 Update

Starting with the 3.2 release, you can use the new $filter aggregation operator to do this more efficiently by only including the list elements you want during a $project:

db.test.aggregate([
    { $match: {_id: ObjectId("512e28984815cbfcb21646a7")}},
    { $project: {
        list: {$filter: {
            input: '$list',
            as: 'item',
            cond: {$gt: ['$$item.a', 3]}
        }}
    }}
])

How can I view a git log of just one user's commits?

Although, there are many useful answers. Whereas, just to add another way to it. You can also use

git shortlog --author="<author name>" --format="%h %s"

It will show the output in the grouped manner:

<Author Name> (5):
  4da3975f dependencies upgraded
  49172445 runtime dependencies resolved
  bff3e127 user-service, kratos, and guava dependencies upgraded
  414b6f1e dropwizard :- service, rmq and db-sharding depedencies upgraded
  a96af8d3 older dependecies removed

Here, total of 5 commits are done by <Author Name> under the current branch. Whereas, you can also use --all to enforce the search everywhere (all the branches) in the git repository.

One catch: git internally tries to match an input <author name> with the name and email of the author in the git database. It is case-sensitive.

random.seed(): What does it do?

Here is my understanding. Every time we set a seed value, a "label" or " reference" is generated. The next random.function call is attached to this "label", so next time you call the same seed value and random.function, it will give you the same result.

   console.log(str.length);
   console.log($.trim(str).length);

Proper way to initialize C++ structs

That seems to me the easiest way. Structure members can be initialized using curly braces ‘{}’. For example, following is a valid initialization.

struct Point
{
   int x, y;
};

int main()
{
   // A valid initialization. member x gets value 0 and y
   // gets value 1. The order of declaration is followed.
   struct Point p1 = {0, 1};
}

There is good information about structs in c++ - https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/structures-in-cpp/

How to filter files when using scp to copy dir recursively?

Since you can scp you should be ok to ssh,
either script the following or login and execute...

# After reaching the server of interest
cd /usr/some/unknown/number/of/sub/folders
tar cfj pack.tar.bz2 $(find . -type f -name *.class)

return back (logout) to local server and scp,

# from the local machine
cd /usr/project/backup/some/unknown/number/of/sub/folders
scp you@server:/usr/some/unknown/number/of/sub/folders/pack.tar.bz2 .
tar xfj pack.tar.bz2

If you find the $(find ...) is too long for your tar change to,

find . -type f -name *.class | xargs tar cfj pack.tar.bz2

Finally, since you are keeping it in /usr/project/backup/,
why bother extraction? Just keep the tar.bz2, with maybe a date+time stamp.

Illegal pattern character 'T' when parsing a date string to java.util.Date

There are two answers above up-to-now and they are both long (and tl;dr too short IMHO), so I write summary from my experience starting to use new java.time library (applicable as noted in other answers to Java version 8+). ISO 8601 sets standard way to write dates: YYYY-MM-DD so the format of date-time is only as below (could be 0, 3, 6 or 9 digits for milliseconds) and no formatting string necessary:

import java.time.Instant;
public static void main(String[] args) {
    String date="2010-10-02T12:23:23Z";
    try {
        Instant myDate = Instant.parse(date);
    } catch (ParseException e) {

I did not need it, but as getting year is in code from the question, then:
it is trickier, cannot be done from Instant directly, can be done via Calendar in way of questions Get integer value of the current year in Java and Converting java.time to Calendar but IMHO as format is fixed substring is more simple to use:

myDate.toString().substring(0,4);

if you have _tmain function in your projects you need to include <tchar.h>.

Angular IE Caching issue for $http

also you can try in your servce to set headers like for example:

...
import { Injectable } from "@angular/core";
import { HttpClient, HttpHeaders, HttpParams } from "@angular/common/http";
...
 @Injectable()
export class MyService {

    private headers: HttpHeaders;

    constructor(private http: HttpClient..)
    {

        this.headers = new HttpHeaders()
                    .append("Content-Type", "application/json")
                    .append("Accept", "application/json")
                    .append("LanguageCulture", this.headersLanguage)
                    .append("Cache-Control", "no-cache")
                    .append("Pragma", "no-cache")
    }
}

How can I introduce multiple conditions in LIKE operator?

Even u can try this

Or call onClick method manually.

Create a file from a ByteArrayOutputStream

You can do it with using a FileOutputStream and the writeTo method.

ByteArrayOutputStream byteArrayOutputStream = getByteStreamMethod();
try(OutputStream outputStream = new FileOutputStream("thefilename")) {
    byteArrayOutputStream.writeTo(outputStream);
}

Convenient way to parse incoming multipart/form-data parameters in a Servlet

Not always there's a servlet before of an upload (I could use a filter for example). Or could be that the same controller ( again a filter or also a servelt ) can serve many actions, so I think that rely on that servlet configuration to use the getPart method (only for Servlet API >= 3.0), I don't know, I don't like.

In general, I prefer independent solutions, able to live alone, and in this case http://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-fileupload/ is one of that.

List<FileItem> multiparts = new ServletFileUpload(new DiskFileItemFactory()).parseRequest(request);
    for (FileItem item : multiparts) {
        if (!item.isFormField()) {
            //your operations on file
        } else {
            String name = item.getFieldName();
            String value = item.getString();
            //you operations on paramters
        }
}

How do I call REST API from an android app?

  1. If you want to integrate Retrofit (all steps defined here):

Goto my blog : retrofit with kotlin

  1. Please use android-async-http library.

the link below explains everything step by step.

http://loopj.com/android-async-http/

Here are sample apps:

  1. http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/software-engineer/calling-restful-services-from-your-android-app/

  2. http://blog.strikeiron.com/bid/73189/Integrate-a-REST-API-into-Android-Application-in-less-than-15-minutes

Create a class :

public class HttpUtils {
  private static final String BASE_URL = "http://api.twitter.com/1/";

  private static AsyncHttpClient client = new AsyncHttpClient();

  public static void get(String url, RequestParams params, AsyncHttpResponseHandler responseHandler) {
      client.get(getAbsoluteUrl(url), params, responseHandler);
  }

  public static void post(String url, RequestParams params, AsyncHttpResponseHandler responseHandler) {
      client.post(getAbsoluteUrl(url), params, responseHandler);
  }

  public static void getByUrl(String url, RequestParams params, AsyncHttpResponseHandler responseHandler) {
      client.get(url, params, responseHandler);
  }

  public static void postByUrl(String url, RequestParams params, AsyncHttpResponseHandler responseHandler) {
      client.post(url, params, responseHandler);
  }

  private static String getAbsoluteUrl(String relativeUrl) {
      return BASE_URL + relativeUrl;
  }
}

Call Method :

    RequestParams rp = new RequestParams();
    rp.add("username", "aaa"); rp.add("password", "aaa@123");

    HttpUtils.post(AppConstant.URL_FEED, rp, new JsonHttpResponseHandler() {
        @Override
        public void onSuccess(int statusCode, Header[] headers, JSONObject response) {
            // If the response is JSONObject instead of expected JSONArray
            Log.d("asd", "---------------- this is response : " + response);
            try {
                JSONObject serverResp = new JSONObject(response.toString());
            } catch (JSONException e) {
                // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                e.printStackTrace();
            }
        }

        @Override
        public void onSuccess(int statusCode, Header[] headers, JSONArray timeline) {
            // Pull out the first event on the public timeline

        }
    });

Please grant internet permission in your manifest file.

 <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET" />

you can add compile 'com.loopj.android:android-async-http:1.4.9' for Header[] and compile 'org.json:json:20160212' for JSONObject in build.gradle file if required.

How exactly does the python any() function work?

It's because the iterable is

(x > 0 for x in list)

Note that x > 0 returns either True or False and thus you have an iterable of booleans.

fatal error LNK1104: cannot open file 'libboost_system-vc110-mt-gd-1_51.lib'

This is the simplest way for an amateur like me who is studying C++ on their own:

First Unzip the boost library to any directory of your choice. I recommend c:\directory.

  1. Open your visual C++.
  2. Create a new project.
  3. Right click on the project.
  4. Click on property.
  5. Click on C/C++.
  6. Click on general.
  7. Select additional include library.
  8. Include the library destination. e.g. c:\boost_1_57_0.
  9. Click on pre-compiler header.
  10. Click on create/use pre-compiled header.
  11. Select not using pre-compiled header.

Then go over to the link library were you experienced your problems.

  1. Go to were the extracted file was c:\boost_1_57_0.
  2. Click on booststrap.bat (don't bother to type on the command window just wait and don't close the window that is the place I had my problem that took me two weeks to solve. After a while the booststrap will run and produce the same file, but now with two different names: b2, and bjam.
  3. Click on b2 and wait it to run.
  4. Click on bjam and wait it to run. Then a folder will be produce called stage.
  5. Right click on the project.
  6. Click on property.
  7. Click on linker.
  8. Click on general.
  9. Click on include additional library directory.
  10. Select the part of the library e.g. c:\boost_1_57_0\stage\lib.

And you are good to go!

List of tables, db schema, dump etc using the Python sqlite3 API

Here's a short and simple python program to print out the table names and the column names for those tables (python 2. python 3 follows).

import sqlite3

db_filename = 'database.sqlite'
newline_indent = '\n   '

db=sqlite3.connect(db_filename)
db.text_factory = str
cur = db.cursor()

result = cur.execute("SELECT name FROM sqlite_master WHERE type='table';").fetchall()
table_names = sorted(zip(*result)[0])
print "\ntables are:"+newline_indent+newline_indent.join(table_names)

for table_name in table_names:
    result = cur.execute("PRAGMA table_info('%s')" % table_name).fetchall()
    column_names = zip(*result)[1]
    print ("\ncolumn names for %s:" % table_name)+newline_indent+(newline_indent.join(column_names))

db.close()
print "\nexiting."

(EDIT: I have been getting periodic vote-ups on this, so here is the python3 version for people who are finding this answer)

import sqlite3

db_filename = 'database.sqlite'
newline_indent = '\n   '

db=sqlite3.connect(db_filename)
db.text_factory = str
cur = db.cursor()

result = cur.execute("SELECT name FROM sqlite_master WHERE type='table';").fetchall()
table_names = sorted(list(zip(*result))[0])
print ("\ntables are:"+newline_indent+newline_indent.join(table_names))

for table_name in table_names:
    result = cur.execute("PRAGMA table_info('%s')" % table_name).fetchall()
    column_names = list(zip(*result))[1]
    print (("\ncolumn names for %s:" % table_name)
           +newline_indent
           +(newline_indent.join(column_names)))

db.close()
print ("\nexiting.")

How to replace all special character into a string using C#

Assume you want to replace symbols which are not digits or letters (and _ character as @Guffa correctly pointed):

string input = "Hello@Hello&Hello(Hello)";
string result = Regex.Replace(input, @"[^\w\d]", ",");
// Hello,Hello,Hello,Hello,

You can add another symbols which should not be replaced. E.g. if you want white space symbols to stay, then just add \s to pattern: \[^\w\d\s]

How do I position a div at the bottom center of the screen

If you aren't comfortable with using negative margins, check this out.

div {
  position: fixed;
  left: 50%;
  bottom: 20px;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
  margin: 0 auto;
}
<div>
  Your Text
</div>

Especially useful when you don't know the width of the div.

align="center" has no effect.

Since you have position:absolute, I would recommend positioning it 50% from the left and then subtracting half of its width from its left margin.

#manipulate {
    position:absolute;
    width:300px;
    height:300px;
    background:#063;
    bottom:0px;
    right:25%;
    left:50%;
    margin-left:-150px;
}

How to convert jsonString to JSONObject in Java

Using org.json

If you have a String containing JSON format text, then you can get JSON Object by following steps:

String jsonString = "{\"phonetype\":\"N95\",\"cat\":\"WP\"}";
JSONObject jsonObj = null;
    try {
        jsonObj = new JSONObject(jsonString);
    } catch (JSONException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }

Now to access the phonetype

Sysout.out.println(jsonObject.getString("phonetype"));

How do I check if a variable is of a certain type (compare two types) in C?

C does not support this form of type introspection. What you are asking is not possible in C (at least without compiler-specific extensions; it would be possible in C++, however).

In general, with C you're expected to know the types of your variable. Since every function has concrete types for its parameters (except for varargs, I suppose), you don't need to check in the function body. The only remaining case I can see is in a macro body, and, well, C macros aren't really all that powerful.

Further, note that C does not retain any type information into runtime. This means that, even if, hypothetically, there was a type comparison extension, it would only work properly when the types are known at compile time (ie, it wouldn't work to test whether two void * point to the same type of data).

As for typeof: First, typeof is a GCC extension. It is not a standard part of C. It's typically used to write macros that only evaluate their arguments once, eg (from the GCC manual):

 #define max(a,b) \
   ({ typeof (a) _a = (a); \
      typeof (b) _b = (b); \
     _a > _b ? _a : _b; })

The typeof keyword lets the macro define a local temporary to save the values of its arguments, allowing them to be evaluated only once.

In short, C does not support overloading; you'll just have to make a func_a(struct a *) and func_b(struct b *), and call the correct one. Alternately, you could make your own introspection system:

struct my_header {
  int type;
};

#define TYPE_A 0
#define TYPE_B 1

struct a {
  struct my_header header;
  /* ... */
};

struct b {
  struct my_header header;
  /* ... */
};

void func_a(struct a *p);
void func_b(struct b *p);

void func_switch(struct my_header *head);
#define func(p) func_switch( &(p)->header )

void func_switch(struct my_header *head) {
  switch (head->type) {
    case TYPE_A: func_a((struct a *)head); break;
    case TYPE_B: func_b((struct b *)head); break;
    default: assert( ("UNREACHABLE", 0) );
  }
}

You must, of course, remember to initialize the header properly when creating these objects.

Docker: Multiple Dockerfiles in project

Use docker-compose and multiple Dockerfile in separate directories

Don't rename your Dockerfile to Dockerfile.db or Dockerfile.web, it may not be supported by your IDE and you will lose syntax highlighting.

As Kingsley Uchnor said, you can have multiple Dockerfile, one per directory, which represent something you want to build.

I like to have a docker folder which holds each applications and their configuration. Here's an example project folder hierarchy for a web application that has a database.

docker-compose.yml
docker
+-- web
¦   +-- Dockerfile
+-- db
    +-- Dockerfile

docker-compose.yml example:

version: '3'
services:
  web:
    # will build ./docker/web/Dockerfile
    build: ./docker/web
    ports:
     - "5000:5000"
    volumes:
     - .:/code
  db:
    # will build ./docker/db/Dockerfile
    build: ./docker/db
    ports:
      - "3306:3306"
  redis:
    # will use docker hub's redis prebuilt image from here:
    # https://hub.docker.com/_/redis/
    image: "redis:alpine"

docker-compose command line usage example:

# The following command will create and start all containers in the background
# using docker-compose.yml from current directory
docker-compose up -d

# get help
docker-compose --help

In case you need files from previous folders when building your Dockerfile

You can still use the above solution and place your Dockerfile in a directory such as docker/web/Dockerfile, all you need is to set the build context in your docker-compose.yml like this:

version: '3'
services:
  web:
    build:
      context: .
      dockerfile: ./docker/web/Dockerfile
    ports:
     - "5000:5000"
    volumes:
     - .:/code

This way, you'll be able to have things like this:

config-on-root.ini
docker-compose.yml
docker
+-- web
    +-- Dockerfile
    +-- some-other-config.ini

and a ./docker/web/Dockerfile like this:

FROM alpine:latest

COPY config-on-root.ini /
COPY docker/web/some-other-config.ini /

Here are some quick commands from tldr docker-compose. Make sure you refer to official documentation for more details.

How to get 30 days prior to current date?

This is an ES6 version

let date = new Date()
let newDate = new Date(date.setDate(date.getDate()-30))
console.log(newDate.getMonth()+1 + '/' + newDate.getDate() + '/' + newDate.getFullYear() )

How can I use async/await at the top level?

The actual solution to this problem is to approach it differently.

Probably your goal is some sort of initialization which typically happens at the top level of an application.

The solution is to ensure that there is only ever one single JavaScript statement at the top level of your application. If you have only one statement at the top of your application, then you are free to use async/await at every other point everwhere (subject of course to normal syntax rules)

Put another way, wrap your entire top level in a function so that it is no longer the top level and that solves the question of how to run async/await at the top level of an application - you don't.

This is what the top level of your application should look like:

import {application} from './server'

application();

C++ initial value of reference to non-const must be an lvalue

When you call test with &nKByte, the address-of operator creates a temporary value, and you can't normally have references to temporary values because they are, well, temporary.

Either do not use a reference for the argument, or better yet don't use a pointer.

Can I fade in a background image (CSS: background-image) with jQuery?

You can fade your background-image in various ways since Firefox 4 ...

Your CSS:

.box {
    background: #CCCCCC;
    -webkit-transition: background 0.5s linear;
    -moz-transition: background 0.5s linear;
    -o-transition: background 0.5s linear;
    transition: background 0.5s linear;
    }
.box:hover {
    background: url(path/to/file.png) no-repeat #CCCCCC;
    }

Your XHTML:

<div class="box">
    Some Text …
</div>

And thats it.

Stuck at ".android/repositories.cfg could not be loaded."

This happened on Windows 10 as well. I resolved it by creating an empty repositories.cfg file.

grep for multiple strings in file on different lines (ie. whole file, not line based search)?

If you only need two search terms, arguably the most readable approach is to run each search and intersect the results:

 comm -12 <(grep -rl word1 . | sort) <(grep -rl word2 . | sort)

Unable to set data attribute using jQuery Data() API

As mentioned, the .data() method won't actually set the value of the data- attribute, nor will it read updated values if the data- attribute changes.

My solution was to extend jQuery with a .realData() method that actually corresponds to the current value of the attribute:

// Alternative to .data() that updates data- attributes, and reads their current value.
(function($){
  $.fn.realData = function(name,value) {
      if (value === undefined) {
        return $(this).attr('data-'+name);
      } else {
        $(this).attr('data-'+name,value);
      }
  };
})(jQuery);

NOTE: Sure you could just use .attr(), but from my experience, most developers (aka me) make the mistake of viewing .attr() and .data() as interchangeable, and often substitute one for the other without thinking. It might work most of the time, but it's a great way to introduce bugs, especially when dealing with any sort of dynamic data binding. So by using .realData(), I can be more explicit about the intended behavior.

In Python, what does dict.pop(a,b) mean?

The pop method of dicts (like self.data, i.e. {'a':'aaa','b':'bbb','c':'ccc'}, here) takes two arguments -- see the docs

The second argument, default, is what pop returns if the first argument, key, is absent. (If you call pop with just one argument, key, it raises an exception if that key's absent).

In your example, print b.pop('a',{'b':'bbb'}), this is irrelevant because 'a' is a key in b.data. But if you repeat that line...:

b=a()
print b.pop('a',{'b':'bbb'})
print b.pop('a',{'b':'bbb'})
print b.data

you'll see it makes a difference: the first pop removes the 'a' key, so in the second pop the default argument is actually returned (since 'a' is now absent from b.data).

Two column div layout with fluid left and fixed right column

CSS:

#sidebar {float: right; width: 200px; background: #eee;}
#content {overflow: hidden; background: #dad;}

HTML:

<div id="sidebar">I'm 200px wide</div>
<div id="content"> I take up the remaining space <br> and I don't wrap under the right column</div>

The above should work, you can put that code in wrapper if you want the give it width and center it too, overflow:hidden on the column without a width is the key to getting it to contain, vertically, as in not wrap around the side columns (can be left or right)

IE6 might need zoom:1 set on the #content div too if you need it's support

How to develop Android app completely using python?

There are two primary contenders for python apps on Android

Chaquopy

https://chaquo.com/chaquopy/

This integrates with the Android build system, it provides a Python API for all android features. To quote the site "The complete Android API and user interface toolkit are directly at your disposal."

Beeware (Toga widget toolkit)

https://pybee.org/

This provides a multi target transpiler, supports many targets such as Android and iOS. It uses a generic widget toolkit (toga) that maps to the host interface calls.

Which One?

Both are active projects and their github accounts shows a fair amount of recent activity.

Beeware Toga like all widget libraries is good for getting the basics out to multiple platforms. If you have basic designs, and a desire to expand to other platforms this should work out well for you.

On the other hand, Chaquopy is a much more precise in its mapping of the python API to Android. It also allows you to mix in Java, useful if you want to use existing code from other resources. If you have strict design targets, and predominantly want to target Android this is a much better resource.

Checking Value of Radio Button Group via JavaScript?

In pure Javascript:

var genders = document.getElementsByName("gender");
var selectedGender;

for(var i = 0; i < genders.length; i++) {
   if(genders[i].checked)
       selectedGender = genders[i].value;
 }

update

In pure Javascript without loop, using newer (and potentially not-yet-supported) RadioNodeList :

var form_elements = document.getElementById('my_form').elements;
var selectedGender = form_elements['gender'].value;

The only catch is that RadioNodeList is only returned by the HTMLFormElement.elements or HTMLFieldSetElement.elements property, so you have to have some identifier for the form or fieldset that the radio inputs are wrapped in to grab it first.

Get unicode value of a character

First, I get the high side of the char. After, get the low side. Convert all of things in HexString and put the prefix.

int hs = (int) c  >> 8;
int ls = hs & 0x000F;

String highSide = Integer.toHexString(hs);
String lowSide = Integer.toHexString(ls);
lowSide = Integer.toHexString(hs & 0x00F0);
String hexa = Integer.toHexString( (int) c );

System.out.println(c+" = "+"\\u"+highSide+lowSide+hexa);

make image( not background img) in div repeat?

It would probably be easier to just fake it by using a div. Just make sure you set the height if its empty so that it can actually appear. Say for instance you want it to be 50px tall set the div height to 50px.

<div id="rightflower">
<div id="divImg"></div>
</div>

And in your style sheet just add the background and its properties, height and width, and what ever positioning you had in mind.

php get values from json encode

json_decode() will return an object or array if second value it's true:

$json = '{"countryId":"84","productId":"1","status":"0","opId":"134"}';
$json = json_decode($json, true);
echo $json['countryId'];
echo $json['productId'];
echo $json['status'];
echo $json['opId'];

What does the "yield" keyword do?

yield yields something. It's like somebody asks you to make 5 cupcakes. If you are done with at least one cupcake, you can give it to them to eat while you make other cakes.

In [4]: def make_cake(numbers):
   ...:     for i in range(numbers):
   ...:         yield 'Cake {}'.format(i)
   ...:

In [5]: factory = make_cake(5)

Here factory is called a generator, which makes you cakes. If you call make_function, you get a generator instead of running that function. It is because when yield keyword is present in a function, it becomes a generator.

In [7]: next(factory)
Out[7]: 'Cake 0'

In [8]: next(factory)
Out[8]: 'Cake 1'

In [9]: next(factory)
Out[9]: 'Cake 2'

In [10]: next(factory)
Out[10]: 'Cake 3'

In [11]: next(factory)
Out[11]: 'Cake 4'

They consumed all the cakes, but they ask for one again.

In [12]: next(factory)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
StopIteration Traceback (most recent call last)
<ipython-input-12-0f5c45da9774> in <module>
----> 1 next(factory)

StopIteration:

and they are being told to stop asking more. So once you consumed a generator you are done with it. You need to call make_cake again if you want more cakes. It is like placing another order for cupcakes.

In [13]: factory = make_cake(3)

In [14]: for cake in factory:
    ...:     print(cake)
    ...:
Cake 0
Cake 1
Cake 2

You can also use for loop with a generator like the one above.

One more example: Lets say you want a random password whenever you ask for it.

In [22]: import random

In [23]: import string

In [24]: def random_password_generator():
    ...:     while True:
    ...:         yield ''.join([random.choice(string.ascii_letters) for _ in range(8)])
    ...:

In [25]: rpg = random_password_generator()

In [26]: for i in range(3):
    ...:     print(next(rpg))
    ...:
FXpUBhhH
DdUDHoHn
dvtebEqG

In [27]: next(rpg)
Out[27]: 'mJbYRMNo'

Here rpg is a generator, which can generate an infinite number of random passwords. So we can also say that generators are useful when we don't know the length of the sequence, unlike list which has a finite number of elements.
