pydoc is fantastic for generating documentation, but the documentation has to be written in the first place. You must have docstrings in your source code as was mentioned by RocketDonkey in the comments:

The first docstring provides instructions for creating the documentation with pydoc. There are examples of different types of docstrings so you can see how they look when generated with pydoc.

Update: Since Python 3.5 you can use type hints which is a compact, machine-readable syntax:

The main advantage of this syntax is that it is defined by the language and that it's unambiguous, so tools like PyCharm can easily take advantage from it.

Error is straight forward and its because of wrong placeholders you have used in function call. Inside init you are not passing any parameters to your function. It should be this way

Single quote issue

I used a json string with single quotes :

But json.loads accepts only double quotes for json properties :

Final comma issue

json.loads doesn't accept a final comma:

Solution: ast to solve single quote and final comma issues

You can use ast (part of standard library for both Python 2 and 3) for this processing. Here is an example :

Using ast will prevent you from single quote and final comma issues by interpet the JSON like Python dictionnary (so you must follow the Python dictionnary syntax). It's a pretty good and safely alternative of eval() function for literal structures.

Python documentation warned us of using large/complex string :

I initially followed Shahs answer (thank you!) by re configuring the OPTIONSVerbHandler in IIS, but my settings were restored when I redeployed my application.

I ended up removing the OPTIONSVerbHandler in my Web.config instead.

Please find in the below code what I developed to support internationalization. It formats the given numeric value to language specific format. It's not pretty and it is certainly not fast but it gets the job done!

First, is 40 collisions for 130 words hashed to 0..99 bad? You can't expect perfect hashing if you are not taking steps specifically for it to happen. An ordinary hash function won't have fewer collisions than a random generator most of the time.

A hash function with a good reputation is MurmurHash3.

Finally, regarding the size of the hash table, it really depends what kind of hash table you have in mind, especially, whether buckets are extensible or one-slot. If buckets are extensible, again there is a choice: you choose the average bucket length for the memory/speed constraints that you have.

Python strings are immutable so what you are trying to do in C will be simply impossible in python. You will have to create a new string.

The <h:commandLink> renders a HTML <a> element with an onclick script which submits a (hidden) POST form and can invoke a managed bean action method. It's also required to be placed inside a <h:form>.

You can't have local functions in C++. However, C++11 has lambdas. Lambdas are basically variables that work like functions.

A lambda has the type std::function (actually that's not quite true, but in most cases you can suppose it is). To use this type, you need to #include <functional>. std::function is a template, taking as template argument the return type and the argument types, with the syntax std::function<ReturnType(ArgumentTypes)>. For example, std::function<int(std::string, float)> is a lambda returning an int and taking two arguments, one std::string and one float. The most common one is std::function<void()>, which returns nothing and takes no arguments.

Once a lambda is declared, it is called just like a normal function, using the syntax lambda(arguments).

To define a lambda, use the syntax [captures](arguments){code} (there are other ways of doing it, but I won't mention them here). arguments is what arguments the lambda takes, and code is the code that should be run when the lambda is called. Usually you put [=] or [&] as captures. [=] means that you capture all variables in the scope in which the value is defined by value, which means that they will keep the value that they had when the lambda was declared. [&] means that you capture all variables in the scope by reference, which means that they will always have their current value, but if they are erased from memory the program will crash. Here are some examples:

You can also capture only specific variables, for example [&foo] will capture foo by reference and will capture no other variables. You can also capture no variables at all by using []. If you try to use a variable in a lambda that you didn't capture, it won't compile. Here is an example:

You don't need to convert it. List<T> implements the IEnumerable<T> interface so it is already an enumerable.

This means that it is perfectly fine to have the following:

I had the same error. What worked for me is when you go for the SMSS GUI option, look at General, Files in Options settings. After I did that (replace DB, set location) all went well.

I guess the thread that needs to be killed is either in any kind of waiting mode, or doing some heavy job. I would suggest using a "naive" way.

I was experiencing this same symptom - 404 on woff files in Chrome - and was running an application on a Windows Server with IIS 6.

If you are in the same situation you can fix it by doing the following:

Solution 1

"Simply add the following MIME type declarations via IIS Manager (HTTP Headers tab of website properties): .woff application/x-woff"

Update: according to MIME Types for woff fonts and Grsmto the actual MIME type is application/x-font-woff (for Chrome at least). x-woff will fix Chrome 404s, x-font-woff will fix Chrome warnings.

As of 2017: Woff fonts have now been standardised as part of the RFC8081 specification to the mime type font/woff and font/woff2.

This error can be due to many many things.

The key here seems the hint about error reading. I see you are working on a flash drive or something similar? Try to run the install on a local folder owned by your current user.

You could also try with sudo, that might solve a permission problem if that's the case.

Another reason why it cannot read could be because it has not downloaded correctly, or saved correctly. A little problem in your network could have caused that, and the cache clean would remove the files and force a refetch but that does not solve your problem. That means it would be more on the save part, maybe it didn't save because of permissions, maybe it didn't not save correctly because it was lacking disk space...

The main problem with your example code is that the $result variable you use to store the output of curl_exec() does not contain the body of the HTTP response - it contains the value true. If you try to print_r() that, it will just say "1".

The curl_exec() reference explains:

Return Values

Returns TRUE on success or FALSE on failure. However, if the CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER option is set, it will return the result on success, FALSE on failure.

So if you want to get the HTTP response body in your $result variable, you must first run

On a general note - the curl library for PHP is useful and has a lot of features to handle the minutia of HTTP protocol (and others), but if all you want is to GET some resource or even POST to some URL, and read the response - then file_get_contents() is all you'll ever need: it is much simpler to use and have much less surprising behavior to worry about.

Essentially, a List<> in .NET is a wrapper over an array. A LinkedList<> is a linked list. So the question comes down to, what is the difference between an array and a linked list, and when should an array be used instead of a linked list. Probably the two most important factors in your decision of which to use would come down to:

• Linked lists have much better insertion/removal performance, so long as the insertions/removals are not on the last element in the collection. This is because an array must shift all remaining elements that come after the insertion/removal point. If the insertion/removal is at the tail end of the list however, this shift is not needed (although the array may need to be resized, if its capacity is exceeded).
• Arrays have much better accessing capabilities. Arrays can be indexed into directly (in constant time). Linked lists must be traversed (linear time).

I will answer your question using a math analogy:

In this instance, the number 0 will represent no value. If you pick a random number, say 15, how many times can 0 be subtracted from 15? Infinite times because 0 has no value, thus you are taking nothing out of 15. Do you have difficulty accepting that 15 - 0 = 15 instead of ERROR? So if we switch this analogy back to Java coding, the String "" represents no value. Pick a random string, say "hello world", how many times can "" be subtracted from "hello world"?

Here is a quick idea about how broadcast and emit work.

HOWEVER

When you have all these nested child nodes trying to communicate like this, you will quickly see many $on's, $broadcast's, and $emit's.

Here is what I like to do.

In the uppermost PARENT NODE ( 3 in this case... ), which may be your parent controller...

So, in file three.js

Now in any of the child nodes you only need to $emit the message or catch it using $on.

Just to add to CKoenig's response. His answer will work as long as the class you're dealing with is a reference type (like a class). If the custom object were a struct, this is a value type, and the results of .FirstOrDefault will give you a local copy of that, which will mean it won't persist back to the collection, as this example shows:

This error really just has to do with the file Path,thats all you have to check,for me my parent folder was "Layouts" but my actual file was layout.html,my path had layouts on both,once i corrected that error was gone.

If you are doing light validation, it is best to do it on the client. It will save the network traffic which will help your server perform better. If if it complicated validation that involves pulling data from a database or something, like passwords, then it best to do it on the server where the data can be securely checked.

A generic way to get a parent of a control that I have used is:

There is a small difference between both.

Second declaration assignates the reference associated to the constant SOMEto the variable str

First declaration creates a new String having for value the value of the constant SOME and assignates its reference to the variable str.

In the first case, a second String has been created having the same value that SOME which implies more inititialization time. As a consequence, you should avoid it. Furthermore, at compile time, all constants SOMEare transformed into the same instance, which uses far less memory.

As a consequence, always prefer second syntax.

The innerHtml is a property of HTML-Elements, which allows you to set it’s html-content programatically. There is also a innerText property which defines the content as plain text.

The [attributeName]="value" box bracket , surrounding the attribute defines an Angular input-binding. That means, that the value of the property (in your case innerHtml) is bound to the given expression, when the expression-result changes, the property value changes too.

So basically [innerHtml] allows you to bind and dynamically change the html-conent of the given HTML-Element.

It's not good to change the scope of your application dependencies. Putting the dependency as compile, will provide the dependency also in your artifact that will be installed somewere. The best think to do is configure the RUN configuration of your sping boot application by specifying as stated in documentation :

"Include dependencies with 'Provided' scope" "Enable this option to add dependencies with the Provided scope to the runtime classpath."

Use git stash

It pushes changes to a stack. When you want to pull them back use

You can even pull individual items out. To completely blow away the stash:

parseInt("123qwe")

returns 123

Number("123qwe")

returns NaN

In other words parseInt() parses up to the first non-digit and returns whatever it had parsed. Number() wants to convert the entire string into a number, which can also be a float BTW.

EDIT #1: Lucero commented about the radix that can be used along with parseInt(). As far as that is concerned, please see THE DOCTOR's answer below (I'm not going to copy that here, the doc shall have a fair share of the fame...).

EDIT #2: Regarding use cases: That's somewhat written between the lines already. Use Number() in cases where you indirectly want to check if the given string completely represents a numeric value, float or integer. parseInt()/parseFloat() aren't that strict as they just parse along and stop when the numeric value stops (radix!), which makes it useful when you need a numeric value at the front "in case there is one" (note that parseInt("hui") also returns NaN). And the biggest difference is the use of radix that Number() doesn't know of and parseInt() may indirectly guess from the given string (that can cause weird results sometimes).

Be aware that it only updates the first company it found with company id 1. For multiple

Having a hidden input field leads to problems with datepicker dialog positioning (dialog is horizontally centered). You could alter the dialog's margin, but there's a better way.

Just create an input field and "hide" it by setting it's opacity to 0 and making it 1px wide. Also position it near (or under) the button, or where ever you want the datepicker to appear.

Then attach the datepicker to the "hidden" input field and show it when user presses the button.

Dmitriy is right that you'll want the Sieve of Atkin to generate the prime list but I don't believe that takes care of the whole issue. Now that you have a list of primes you'll need to see how many of those primes act as a divisor (and how often).

Here's some python for the algo Look here and search for "Subject: math - need divisors algorithm". Just count the number of items in the list instead of returning them however.

Here's a Dr. Math that explains what exactly it is you need to do mathematically.

Essentially it boils down to if your number n is:
n = a^x * b^y * c^z
(where a, b, and c are n's prime divisors and x, y, and z are the number of times that divisor is repeated) then the total count for all of the divisors is:
(x + 1) * (y + 1) * (z + 1).

Edit: BTW, to find a,b,c,etc you'll want to do what amounts to a greedy algo if I'm understanding this correctly. Start with your largest prime divisor and multiply it by itself until a further multiplication would exceed the number n. Then move to the next lowest factor and times the previous prime ^ number of times it was multiplied by the current prime and keep multiplying by the prime until the next will exceed n... etc. Keep track of the number of times you multiply the divisors together and apply those numbers into the formula above.

Not 100% sure about my algo description but if that isn't it it's something similar .

If you give the sequence and any element length is 1 and required two then we will get this kind of error. See the above code. First time I gave the sequence with tuple and it's length 1, then we got the error and dictionary is not updated. second time I gave inside tuple with with two elements, dictionary got updated.

Here is an example for a new validation method that will validate almost any date format, including:

• dd mm yy or dd mm yyyy
• dd-mm-yy or dd-mm-yyyy

Then, when you pass the value to the php you can convert it with strtotime

I had the same error. The solution for me was change the ANDROID_HOME path. First I took a look into tools->android->sdk manager from Android Studio. In that window, we can see the path where Android Studio looks for the SDK: image

Then I opened a Windows CMD shell, executed:

echo %ANDROID_HOME%

but the path was different to the one in ANDROID STUDIO CONFIGURATION of the first step.

The solution was to change in user environment, the ANDROID_HOME, to the one of the first step: image

I finally closed the cmd shell, and opened another cmd shell to execute:

the path was updated, and I could run my emulator perfectly.

Two things: Change the variables x, y, z as int and call the method as Math.max(Math.max(x,y),z) as it accepts two parameters only.

In my particular case my target is interfaces/AngelInterface.php. I made changes to the file, committed them, updated the build computer ran the phpdoc compiler and found my changes were a waste of time. svn log interfaces/AngelInterface.php shows my change as r22060 and the previous commit on that file was r22059. So I can svn update -r 22059 interfaces/AngelInterface.php and I end up with code as it was in -r22059 again. Then :-

mv interfaces/AngelInterface.php interfaces/AngelInterface.php~
svn update interfaces/AngelInterface.php
mv interfaces/AngelInterface.php~ interfaces/AngelInterface.php

Removing .git hidden folder worked for me.

Use PHP's $_POST or $_GET superglobals to retrieve the value of the input tag via the name of the HTML tag.

For Example, change the method in your form and then echo out the value by the name of the input:

I don't think that can be done RELIABLY with built in methods on the native Date object. The toLocaleString method gets close, but if I am remembering correctly, it won't work correctly in IE < 10. If you are able to use a library for this task, MomentJS is a really amazing library; and it makes working with dates and times easy. Otherwise, I think you will have to write a basic function to give you the format that you are after.

It is not a good practice but even though you wish to use it you can use the singleton pattern as its good. I have used the singleton patterns in most of my project its good.

The characters '<', and '>', are to indicate a place-holder, you should remove them to read:

This is just a suggestion of mine and probably one of many solutions, but it works: Simply set an ID for the programatically created layout, and add it to the root layout that you defined in .xml, and then use the set ID to add the Fragment.

It could look like this:

Please also be aware, that I used a fixed height and width of 200dp, so that one Fragment does not use the full screen as it would with "match_parent".

On one project where we had 4 environments (development, test, staging and production) we developed a system where the application selected the appropriate configuration based on the machine name it was deployed to.

This worked for us because:

• administrators could deploy applications without involving developers (a requirement) and without having to fiddle with config files (which they hated);
• machine names adhered to a convention. We matched names using a regular expression and deployed to multiple machines in an environment; and
• we used integrated security for connection strings. This means we could keep account names in our config files at design time without revealing any passwords.

It worked well for us in this instance, but probably wouldn't work everywhere.

You should really check the log. It seems that quite a few components can cause the Windows SDK installer to fail to install with this useless error message. For instance it could be the Visual C++ Redistributable Package as mentioned there.

Let's say you have a typical variadic function you've written. Because at least one argument is required before the variadic one ..., you have to always write an extra argument in usage.

Or do you?

If you wrap your variadic function in a macro, you need no preceding arg. Consider this example:

This is obviously far more convenient, since you needn't specify the initial argument every time.

TL;DR

Error #1064 means that MySQL can't understand your command. To fix it:

• Read the error message. It tells you exactly where in your command MySQL got confused.

• Examine your command. If you use a programming language to create your command, use echo, console.log(), or its equivalent to show the entire command so you can see it.

• Check the manual. By comparing against what MySQL expected at that point, the problem is often obvious.

• Check for reserved words. If the error occurred on an object identifier, check that it isn't a reserved word (and, if it is, ensure that it's properly quoted).

1. Aaaagh!! What does #1064 mean?

   Error messages may look like gobbledygook, but they're (often) incredibly informative and provide sufficient detail to pinpoint what went wrong. By understanding exactly what MySQL is telling you, you can arm yourself to fix any problem of this sort in the future.

   As in many programs, MySQL errors are coded according to the type of problem that occurred. Error #1064 is a syntax error.

   • What is this "syntax" of which you speak? Is it witchcraft?

     Whilst "syntax" is a word that many programmers only encounter in the context of computers, it is in fact borrowed from wider linguistics. It refers to sentence structure: i.e. the rules of grammar; or, in other words, the rules that define what constitutes a valid sentence within the language.

     For example, the following English sentence contains a syntax error (because the indefinite article "a" must always precede a noun):

     This sentence contains syntax error a.

   • What does that have to do with MySQL?

     Whenever one issues a command to a computer, one of the very first things that it must do is "parse" that command in order to make sense of it. A "syntax error" means that the parser is unable to understand what is being asked because it does not constitute a valid command within the language: in other words, the command violates the grammar of the programming language.

     It's important to note that the computer must understand the command before it can do anything with it. Because there is a syntax error, MySQL has no idea what one is after and therefore gives up before it even looks at the database and therefore the schema or table contents are not relevant.

2. How do I fix it?

   Obviously, one needs to determine how it is that the command violates MySQL's grammar. This may sound pretty impenetrable, but MySQL is trying really hard to help us here. All we need to do is…

   • Read the message!

     MySQL not only tells us exactly where the parser encountered the syntax error, but also makes a suggestion for fixing it. For example, consider the following SQL command:

     UPDATE my_table WHERE id=101 SET name='foo'
     

     That command yields the following error message:

     ERROR 1064 (42000): You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near 'WHERE id=101 SET name='foo'' at line 1

     MySQL is telling us that everything seemed fine up to the word WHERE, but then a problem was encountered. In other words, it wasn't expecting to encounter WHERE at that point.

     Messages that say ...near '' at line... simply mean that the end of command was encountered unexpectedly: that is, something else should appear before the command ends.

   • Examine the actual text of your command!

     Programmers often create SQL commands using a programming language. For example a php program might have a (wrong) line like this:

     $result = $mysqli->query("UPDATE " . $tablename ."SET name='foo' WHERE id=101");
     

     If you write this this in two lines

     $query = "UPDATE " . $tablename ."SET name='foo' WHERE id=101"
     $result = $mysqli->query($query);
     

     then you can add echo $query; or var_dump($query) to see that the query actually says

     UPDATE userSET name='foo' WHERE id=101
     

     Often you'll see your error immediately and be able to fix it.

   • Obey orders!

     MySQL is also recommending that we "check the manual that corresponds to our MySQL version for the right syntax to use". Let's do that.

     I'm using MySQL v5.6, so I'll turn to that version's manual entry for an UPDATE command. The very first thing on the page is the command's grammar (this is true for every command):

     UPDATE [LOW_PRIORITY] [IGNORE] table_reference
         SET col_name1={expr1|DEFAULT} [, col_name2={expr2|DEFAULT}] ...
         [WHERE where_condition]
         [ORDER BY ...]
         [LIMIT row_count]
     

     The manual explains how to interpret this syntax under Typographical and Syntax Conventions, but for our purposes it's enough to recognise that: clauses contained within square brackets [ and ] are optional; vertical bars | indicate alternatives; and ellipses ... denote either an omission for brevity, or that the preceding clause may be repeated.

     We already know that the parser believed everything in our command was okay prior to the WHERE keyword, or in other words up to and including the table reference. Looking at the grammar, we see that table_reference must be followed by the SET keyword: whereas in our command it was actually followed by the WHERE keyword. This explains why the parser reports that a problem was encountered at that point.

   A note of reservation

   Of course, this was a simple example. However, by following the two steps outlined above (i.e. observing exactly where in the command the parser found the grammar to be violated and comparing against the manual's description of what was expected at that point), virtually every syntax error can be readily identified.

   I say "virtually all", because there's a small class of problems that aren't quite so easy to spot—and that is where the parser believes that the language element encountered means one thing whereas you intend it to mean another. Take the following example:

   UPDATE my_table SET where='foo'
   

   Again, the parser does not expect to encounter WHERE at this point and so will raise a similar syntax error—but you hadn't intended for that where to be an SQL keyword: you had intended for it to identify a column for updating! However, as documented under Schema Object Names:

   If an identifier contains special characters or is a reserved word, you must quote it whenever you refer to it. (Exception: A reserved word that follows a period in a qualified name must be an identifier, so it need not be quoted.) Reserved words are listed at Section 9.3, “Keywords and Reserved Words”.

   [ deletia ]

   The identifier quote character is the backtick (“`”):

   mysql> SELECT * FROM `select` WHERE `select`.id > 100;

   If the ANSI_QUOTES SQL mode is enabled, it is also permissible to quote identifiers within double quotation marks:

You should use promises for async operations where you don't know when it will be completed. A promise "represents an operation that hasn't completed yet, but is expected in the future." (https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/Promise)

An example implementation would be like:

Well, let's suppose the call to getData() took 10 seconds to complete. If the function didn't return anything in that time, it would effectively become normal synchronous code and would hang the browser until it completed.

With the promise returning instantly though, the browser is free to continue on with other code in the meantime. Once the promise resolves/fails, the then() call is triggered. So it makes much more sense this way, even if it might make the flow of your code a bit more complex (complexity is a common problem of async/parallel programming in general after all!)

you can't access your drawables via a path, so if you want a human readable interface with your drawables that you can build programatically.

In my case, I needed to add the JMETER_HOME environment variable to be available via my Ant build scripts across all projects on my Jenkins server (Linux), in a way that would not interfere with my local build environment (Windows and Mac) in the build.xml script. Setting the environment variable via Manage Jenkins - Configure System - Global properties was the easiest and least intrusive way to accomplish this. No plug-ins are necessary.

The environment variable is then available in Ant via:

It's significantly easier to grant management permissions to a service using one of these tools:

• Group Policy
• Security Template
• subinacl.exe command-line tool.

curl sends POST requests with the default content type of application/x-www-form-urlencoded. If you want to send a JSON request, you will have to specify the correct content type header:

But that will only work if the server accepts json input. The .json at the end of the url may only indicate that the output is json, it doesn't necessarily mean that it also will handle json input. The API documentation should give you a hint on whether it does or not.

The reason you get a 401 and not some other error is probably because the server can't extract the auth_token from your request.

There is another way of doing "random" ordered numbers with LFSR, take a look at:

But these are not TRUE random numbers because the random generation is deterministic.

Here is a simple "CSS only" trick I created and am using to dynamically add a red asterisk on the labels of required form elements without losing browsers' default form validation.

Important: You must preserve the order of elements that is the input element first and label element second. CSS is gonna handle it and transform it in the traditional way, that is the label first and input second.

A very important distinction, which is easy to miss, is the default bheavior of these two functions, when it comes to exceptions.

I'll use this example to simulate a coroutine that will raise exceptions, sometimes -

asyncio.wait() won't re-raise exceptions from the child tasks until you await them individually. (The stacktrace in the logs are just messages, they cannot be caught!)

In DOS you couldn't use environment variables on the command line, only in batch files, where they used the % sign as a delimiter. If you wanted a literal % sign in a batch file, e.g. in an echo statement, you needed to double it.

This carried over to Windows NT which allowed environment variables on the command line, however for backwards compatibility you still need to double your % signs in a .cmd file.

Check out the JavaScript onbeforeunload event. It's non-standard JavaScript introduced by Microsoft, however it works in most browsers and their onbeforeunload documentation has more information and examples.

.btn:hover input:disabled would select any disabled input elements contained in an element with a class btn which is currently hovered by the user.

I would prefer :disabled over [disabled], see this question for a discussion: Should I use CSS :disabled pseudo-class or [disabled] attribute selector or is it a matter of opinion?

By the way, Laravel (PHP) generates the HTML - not the browser.

Here are examples of the BOM usage that actually cause real problems and yet many people don't know about it.

BOM breaks scripts

Shell scripts, Perl scripts, Python scripts, Ruby scripts, Node.js scripts or any other executable that needs to be run by an interpreter - all start with a shebang line which looks like one of those:

It tells the system which interpreter needs to be run when invoking such a script. If the script is encoded in UTF-8, one may be tempted to include a BOM at the beginning. But actually the "#!" characters are not just characters. They are in fact a magic number that happens to be composed out of two ASCII characters. If you put something (like a BOM) before those characters, then the file will look like it had a different magic number and that can lead to problems.

The shebang characters are represented by the same two bytes in extended ASCII encodings, including UTF-8, which is commonly used for scripts and other text files on current Unix-like systems. However, UTF-8 files may begin with the optional byte order mark (BOM); if the "exec" function specifically detects the bytes 0x23 and 0x21, then the presence of the BOM (0xEF 0xBB 0xBF) before the shebang will prevent the script interpreter from being executed. Some authorities recommend against using the byte order mark in POSIX (Unix-like) scripts,[14] for this reason and for wider interoperability and philosophical concerns. Additionally, a byte order mark is not necessary in UTF-8, as that encoding does not have endianness issues; it serves only to identify the encoding as UTF-8. [emphasis added]

BOM is illegal in JSON

See RFC 7159, Section 8.1:

Implementations MUST NOT add a byte order mark to the beginning of a JSON text.

BOM is redundant in JSON

Not only it is illegal in JSON, it is also not needed to determine the character encoding because there are more reliable ways to unambiguously determine both the character encoding and endianness used in any JSON stream (see this answer for details).

BOM breaks JSON parsers

Not only it is illegal in JSON and not needed, it actually breaks all software that determine the encoding using the method presented in RFC 4627:

Determining the encoding and endianness of JSON, examining the first four bytes for the NUL byte:

Now, if the file starts with BOM it will look like this:

Note that:

1. UTF-32BE doesn't start with three NULs, so it won't be recognized
2. UTF-32LE the first byte is not followed by three NULs, so it won't be recognized
3. UTF-16BE has only one NUL in the first four bytes, so it won't be recognized
4. UTF-16LE has only one NUL in the first four bytes, so it won't be recognized

Depending on the implementation, all of those may be interpreted incorrectly as UTF-8 and then misinterpreted or rejected as invalid UTF-8, or not recognized at all.

Additionally, if the implementation tests for valid JSON as I recommend, it will reject even the input that is indeed encoded as UTF-8, because it doesn't start with an ASCII character < 128 as it should according to the RFC.

Other data formats

BOM in JSON is not needed, is illegal and breaks software that works correctly according to the RFC. It should be a nobrainer to just not use it then and yet, there are always people who insist on breaking JSON by using BOMs, comments, different quoting rules or different data types. Of course anyone is free to use things like BOMs or anything else if you need it - just don't call it JSON then.

For other data formats than JSON, take a look at how it really looks like. If the only encodings are UTF-* and the first character must be an ASCII character lower than 128 then you already have all the information needed to determine both the encoding and the endianness of your data. Adding BOMs even as an optional feature would only make it more complicated and error prone.

Other uses of BOM

As for the uses outside of JSON or scripts, I think there are already very good answers here. I wanted to add more detailed info specifically about scripting and serialization, because it is an example of BOM characters causing real problems.

Building on some of the answers here and elsewhere, I've written this simple function which displays a progress bar and elapsed/estimated remaining time. Should work on most unix-based machines.

You don't need a FK, you can join arbitrary columns.

But having a foreign key ensures that the join will actually succeed in finding something.

Foreign key give you certain guarantees that would be extremely difficult and error prone to implement otherwise.

For example, if you don't have a foreign key, you might insert a detail record in the system and just after you checked that the matching master record is present somebody else deletes it. So in order to prevent this you need to lock the master table, when ever you modify the detail table (and vice versa). If you don't need/want that guarantee, screw the FKs.

Depending on your RDBMS a foreign key also might improve performance of select (but also degrades performance of updates, inserts and deletes)

You can try it by adding

My company has a C library our customers use. We use CxxTest (a C++ unit test library) to test the code. CppUnit will also work. If you're stuck in C, I'd recommend RCUNIT (but CUnit is good too).
