Programs & Examples On #Pow

pow is a function that exists in various programming languages that usually takes two numbers as input and returns the first number to the power of the second number. DO NOT USE THIS TAG for questions relating to the Rack server, use [rack-pow] instead.

How to get the Power of some Integer in Swift language?

Array(repeating: a, count: b).reduce(1, *)

Does Java have an exponential operator?

The easiest way is to use Math library.

Use Math.pow(a, b) and the result will be a^b

If you want to do it yourself, you have to use for-loop

// Works only for b >= 1
public static double myPow(double a, int b){
    double res =1;
    for (int i = 0; i < b; i++) {
        res *= a;
    }
    return res;
}

Using:

double base = 2;
int exp = 3;
double whatIWantToKnow = myPow(2, 3);

jQuery or Javascript - how to disable window scroll without overflow:hidden;

You can use jquery-disablescroll to solve the problem:

  • Disable scrolling: $window.disablescroll();
  • Enable scrolling again: $window.disablescroll("undo");

Supports handleWheel, handleScrollbar, handleKeys and scrollEventKeys.

Properly Handling Errors in VBA (Excel)

Two main purposes for error handling:

  1. Trap errors you can predict but can't control the user from doing (e.g. saving a file to a thumb drive when the thumb drives has been removed)
  2. For unexpected errors, present user with a form that informs them what the problem is. That way, they can relay that message to you and you might be able to give them a work-around while you work on a fix.

So, how would you do this?

First of all, create an error form to display when an unexpected error occurs.

It could look something like this (FYI: Mine is called frmErrors): Company Error Form

Notice the following labels:

  • lblHeadline
  • lblSource
  • lblProblem
  • lblResponse

Also, the standard command buttons:

  • Ignore
  • Retry
  • Cancel

There's nothing spectacular in the code for this form:

Option Explicit

Private Sub cmdCancel_Click()
  Me.Tag = CMD_CANCEL
  Me.Hide
End Sub

Private Sub cmdIgnore_Click()
  Me.Tag = CMD_IGNORE
  Me.Hide
End Sub

Private Sub cmdRetry_Click()
  Me.Tag = CMD_RETRY
  Me.Hide
End Sub

Private Sub UserForm_Initialize()
  Me.lblErrorTitle.Caption = "Custom Error Title Caption String"
End Sub

Private Sub UserForm_QueryClose(Cancel As Integer, CloseMode As Integer)
  'Prevent user from closing with the Close box in the title bar.
    If CloseMode <> 1 Then
      cmdCancel_Click
    End If
End Sub

Basically, you want to know which button the user pressed when the form closes.

Next, create an Error Handler Module that will be used throughout your VBA app:

'****************************************************************

  EmptyErrStruc_S utEStruc          ' Release memory

End Function

You may have errors that will be custom only to your application. This would typically be a short list of errors specifically only to your application. If you don't already have a constants module, create one that will contain an ENUM of your custom errors. (NOTE: Office '97 does NOT support ENUMS.). The ENUM should look something like this:

Public Enum CustomErrorName
  MaskedFilterNotSupported
  InvalidMonthNumber
End Enum

Create a module that will throw your custom errors.

'********************************************************************************************************************************
'    MODULE: CustomErrorList
'
' PURPOSE: For trapping custom errors applicable to this application
'
'INSTRUCTIONS: To use this module to create your own custom error:
' 1. Add the Name of the Error to the CustomErrorName Enum
' 2. Add a Case Statement to the raiseCustomError Sub
' 3. Call the raiseCustomError Sub in the routine you may see the custom error
' 4. Make sure the routine you call the raiseCustomError has error handling in it
'
'
'     Date:    Name:           Description:
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
'03/26/2010    Ray       Initial Creation
'********************************************************************************************************************************
Option Explicit
Const MICROSOFT_OFFSET = 512 'Microsoft reserves error values between vbObjectError and vbObjectError + 512
'************************************************************************************************
'  FUNCTION:  raiseCustomError
'
' PURPOSE: Raises a custom error based on the information passed
'
'PARAMETERS: customError - An integer of type CustomErrorName Enum that defines the custom error
' errorSource - The place the error came from
'
' Returns: The ASCII vaule that should be used for the Keypress
'
'     Date:    Name:           Description:
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
'03/26/2010    Ray       Initial Creation
'************************************************************************************************
Public Sub raiseCustomError(customError As Integer, Optional errorSource As String = "")
  Dim errorLong As Long
  Dim errorDescription As String

  errorLong = vbObjectError + MICROSOFT_OFFSET + customError

  Select Case customError

    Case CustomErrorName.MaskedFilterNotSupported
      errorDescription = "The mask filter passed is not supported"

    Case CustomErrorName.InvalidMonthNumber
      errorDescription = "Invalid Month Number Passed"

    Case Else
      errorDescription = "The custom error raised is unknown."

  End Select

  Err.Raise errorLong, errorSource, errorDescription

End Sub

You are now well equipped to trap errors in your program. You sub (or function), should look something like this:

Public Sub MySub(monthNumber as Integer)
  On Error GoTo eh

  Dim sheetWorkSheet As Worksheet

  'Run Some code here

  '************************************************
  '* OPTIONAL BLOCK 1: Look for a specific error
  '************************************************
  'Temporarily Turn off Error Handling so that you can check for specific error
  On Error Resume Next
  'Do some code where you might expect an error. Example below:
  Const ERR_SHEET_NOT_FOUND = 9 'This error number is actually subscript out of range, but for this example means the worksheet was not found

  Set sheetWorkSheet = Sheets("January")

  'Now see if the expected error exists

  If Err.Number = ERR_SHEET_NOT_FOUND Then
    MsgBox "Hey! The January worksheet is missing. You need to recreate it."
    Exit Sub
  ElseIf Err.Number <> 0 Then
    'Uh oh...there was an error we did not expect so just run basic error handling
    GoTo eh
  End If

  'Finished with predictable errors, turn basic error handling back on:
  On Error GoTo eh

  '**********************************************************************************
  '* End of OPTIONAL BLOCK 1
  '**********************************************************************************

  '**********************************************************************************
  '* OPTIONAL BLOCK 2: Raise (a.k.a. "Throw") a Custom Error if applicable
  '**********************************************************************************
  If not (monthNumber >=1 and monthnumber <=12) then
    raiseCustomError CustomErrorName.InvalidMonthNumber, "My Sub"
  end if
  '**********************************************************************************
  '* End of OPTIONAL BLOCK 2
  '**********************************************************************************

  'Rest of code in your sub

  goto sub_exit

eh:
  gEStruc.iErrNum = Err.Number
  gEStruc.sErrorDescription = Err.Description
  gEStruc.sErrorSource = Err.Source
  m_rc = iErrorHandler_F(gEStruc)

  If m_rc = CMD_RETRY Then
    Resume
  End If

sub_exit:
  'Any final processing you want to do.
  'Be careful with what you put here because if it errors out, the error rolls up. This can be difficult to debug; especially if calling routine has no error handling.

  Exit Sub 'I was told a long time ago (10+ years) that exit sub was better than end sub...I can't tell you why, so you may not want to put in this line of code. It's habit I can't break :P
End Sub

A copy/paste of the code above may not work right out of the gate, but should definitely give you the gist.

svn cleanup: sqlite: database disk image is malformed

Integrity check

sqlite3 .svn/wc.db "pragma integrity_check"

Clean up

sqlite3 .svn/wc.db "reindex nodes"
sqlite3 .svn/wc.db "reindex pristine"

Alternatively

You may be able to dump the contents of the database that can be read to a backup file, then slurp it back into an new database file:

sqlite3 .svn/wc.db

sqlite> .mode insert
sqlite> .output dump_all.sql
sqlite> .dump
sqlite> .exit

mv .svn/wc.db .svn/wc-corrupt.db
sqlite3 .svn/wc.db

sqlite> .read dump_all.sql
sqlite> .exit

PHP Pass by reference in foreach

I had to spend a few hours to figure out why a[3] is changing on each iteration. This is the explanation at which I arrived.

There are two types of variables in PHP: normal variables and reference variables. If we assign a reference of a variable to another variable, the variable becomes a reference variable.

for example in

$a = array('zero', 'one', 'two', 'three');

if we do

$v = &$a[0]

the 0th element ($a[0]) becomes a reference variable. $v points towards that variable; therefore, if we make any change to $v, it will be reflected in $a[0] and vice versa.

now if we do

$v = &$a[1]

$a[1] will become a reference variable and $a[0] will become a normal variable (Since no one else is pointing to $a[0] it is converted to a normal variable. PHP is smart enough to make it a normal variable when no one else is pointing towards it)

This is what happens in the first loop

foreach ($a as &$v) {

}

After the last iteration $a[3] is a reference variable.

Since $v is pointing to $a[3] any change to $v results in a change to $a[3]

in the second loop,

foreach ($a as $v) {
  echo $v.'-'.$a[3].PHP_EOL;
}

in each iteration as $v changes, $a[3] changes. (because $v still points to $a[3]). This is the reason why $a[3] changes on each iteration.

In the iteration before the last iteration, $v is assigned the value 'two'. Since $v points to $a[3], $a[3] now gets the value 'two'. Keep this in mind.

In the last iteration, $v (which points to $a[3]) now has the value of 'two', because $a[3] was set to two in the previous iteration. two is printed. This explains why 'two' is repeated when $v is printed in the last iteration.

How to grep for contents after pattern?

You can use grep, as the other answers state. But you don't need grep, awk, sed, perl, cut, or any external tool. You can do it with pure bash.

Try this (semicolons are there to allow you to put it all on one line):

$ while read line;
  do
    if [[ "${line%%:\ *}" == "potato" ]];
    then
      echo ${line##*:\ };
    fi;
  done< file.txt

## tells bash to delete the longest match of ": " in $line from the front.

$ while read line; do echo ${line##*:\ }; done< file.txt
1234
5678
5432
4567
5432
56789

or if you wanted the key rather than the value, %% tells bash to delete the longest match of ": " in $line from the end.

$ while read line; do echo ${line%%:\ *}; done< file.txt
potato
apple
potato
grape
banana
sushi

The substring to split on is ":\ " because the space character must be escaped with the backslash.

How to copy files from 'assets' folder to sdcard?

Here is a cleaned up version for current Android devices, functional method design so that you can copy it to an AssetsHelper class e.g ;)

PHP simple foreach loop with HTML

This will work although when embedding PHP in HTML it is better practice to use the following form:

<table>
    <?php foreach($array as $key=>$value): ?>
    <tr>
        <td><?= $key; ?></td>
    </tr>
    <?php endforeach; ?>
</table>

You can find the doc for the alternative syntax on PHP.net

  1. Hide editor pane
  2. Print Preview (I used firefox, others also fine)
  3. Change its page setup and print to pdf

How to split a string into an array in Bash?

This is similar to the approach by Jmoney38, but using sed:

string="1,2,3,4"
array=(`echo $string | sed 's/,/\n/g'`)
echo ${array[0]}

Prints 1

Are there any worse sorting algorithms than Bogosort (a.k.a Monkey Sort)?

You should do some research into the exciting field of Pessimal Algorithms and Simplexity Analysis. These authors work on the problem of developing a sort with a pessimal best-case (your bogosort's best case is Omega(n), while slowsort (see paper) has a non-polynomial best-case time complexity).

Determine installed PowerShell version

I have made a small batch script that can determine PowerShell version:

@echo off
for /f "tokens=2 delims=:" %%a in ('powershell -Command Get-Host ^| findstr /c:Version') do (echo %%a)

This simply extracts the version of PowerShell using Get-Host and searches the string Version

When the line with the version is found, it uses the for command to extract the version. In this case we are saying that the delimiter is a colon and search next the first colon, resulting in my case 5.1.18362.752.

How to convert OutputStream to InputStream?

Though you cannot convert an OutputStream to an InputStream, java provides a way using PipedOutputStream and PipedInputStream that you can have data written to a PipedOutputStream to become available through an associated PipedInputStream.
Sometime back I faced a similar situation when dealing with third party libraries that required an InputStream instance to be passed to them instead of an OutputStream instance.
The way I fixed this issue is to use the PipedInputStream and PipedOutputStream.
By the way they are tricky to use and you must use multithreading to achieve what you want. I recently published an implementation on github which you can use.
Here is the link . You can go through the wiki to understand how to use it.

How to detect input type=file "change" for the same file?

You can trick it. Remove the file element and add it in the same place on change event. It will erase the file path making it changeable every time.

Example on jsFiddle.

Or you can simply use .prop("value", ""), see this example on jsFiddle.

GitHub README.md center image

I've been looking at the markdown syntax used in github [...], I can't figure out how to center an image

TL;DR

No you can't by only relying on Markdown syntax. Markdown doesn't care with positioning.

Note: Some markdown processors support inclusion of HTML (as rightfully pointed out by @waldyr.ar), and in the GitHub case you may fallback to something like <div style="text-align:center"><img src="..." /></div>. Beware that there's no guarantee the image will be centered if your repository is forked in a different hosting environment (Codeplex, BitBucket, ...) or if the document isn't read through a browser (Sublime Text Markdown preview, MarkdownPad, VisualStudio Web Essentials Markdown preview, ...).

Note 2: Keep in mind that even within the GitHub website, the way markdown is rendered is not uniform. The wiki, for instance, won't allow such css positional trickery.

Unabridged version

The Markdown syntax doesn't provide one with the ability to control the position of an image.

In fact, it would be borderline against the Markdown philosophy to allow such formatting, as stated in the "Philosophy" section

"A Markdown-formatted document should be publishable as-is, as plain text, without looking like it’s been marked up with tags or formatting instructions. "

Markdown files are rendered by github.com website through the use of the Ruby Redcarpet library.

Redcarpet exposes some extensions (such as strikethrough, for instance) which are not part of standard Markdown syntax and provide additional "features". However, no supported extension allow you to center an image.

Concatenating date with a string in Excel

This will return Age as of 06-Aug-2013

python re.split() to split by spaces, commas, and periods, but not in cases like 1,000 or 1.50

So you want to split on spaces, and on commas and periods that aren't surrounded by numbers. This should work:

Reverting to a specific commit based on commit id with Git?

Do you want to roll back your repo to that state, or you just want your local repo to look like that?

If you reset --hard, it will make your local code and local history be just like it was at that commit. But if you wanted to push this to someone else who has the new history, it would fail:

git reset --hard c14809fa

And if you reset --soft, it will move your HEAD to where they were , but leave your local files etc. the same:

git reset --soft c14809fa

So what exactly do you want to do with this reset?

Edit -

You can add "tags" to your repo.. and then go back to a tag. But a tag is really just a shortcut to the sha1.

You can tag this as TAG1.. then a git reset --soft c14809fa, git reset --soft TAG1, or git reset --soft c14809fafb08b9e96ff2879999ba8c807d10fb07 would all do the same thing.

Sort dataGridView columns in C# ? (Windows Form)

There's a method on the DataGridView called "Sort":

this.dataGridView1.Sort(this.dataGridView1.Columns["Name"], ListSortDirection.Ascending);

This will programmatically sort your datagridview.

Very simple log4j2 XML configuration file using Console and File appender

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Configuration status="INFO">
    <Appenders>
        <Console name="Console" target="SYSTEM_OUT">
            <PatternLayout pattern="%d{HH:mm:ss.SSS} [%t] %-5level %logger{36} - %msg%n" />
        </Console>
        <File name="MyFile" fileName="all.log" immediateFlush="false" append="false">
            <PatternLayout pattern="%d{yyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.SSS} [%t] %-5level %logger{36} - %msg%n"/>
        </File>
    </Appenders>
    <Loggers>
        <Root level="debug">
            <AppenderRef ref="Console" />
            <AppenderRef ref="MyFile"/>
        </Root>
    </Loggers>
</Configuration>

Notes:

  • Put the following content in your configuration file.
  • Name the configuration file log4j2.xml
  • Put the log4j2.xml in a folder which is in the class-path (i.e. your source folder "src")
  • Use Logger logger = LogManager.getLogger(); to initialize your logger

Using filter_var() will fail for urls with non-ascii chars, e.g. (http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guimarães). The following function encode all non-ascii chars (e.g. http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guimar%C3%A3es) before calling filter_var().

Hope this helps someone.

<?php

function validate_url($url) {
    $path = parse_url($url, PHP_URL_PATH);
    $encoded_path = array_map('urlencode', explode('/', $path));
    $url = str_replace($path, implode('/', $encoded_path), $url);

    return filter_var($url, FILTER_VALIDATE_URL) ? true : false;
}

// example
if(!validate_url("http://somedomain.com/some/path/file1.jpg")) {
    echo "NOT A URL";
}
else {
    echo "IS A URL";
}

HTML5 form required attribute. Set custom validation message?

By setting and unsetting the setCustomValidity in the right time, the validation message will work flawlessly.

<input name="Username" required
oninvalid="this.setCustomValidity('Username cannot be empty.')"
onchange="this.setCustomValidity('')" type="text" />

I used onchange instead of oninput which is more general and occurs when the value is changed in any condition even through JavaScript.

jQuery function to get all unique elements from an array?

You can use array.filter to return the first item of each distinct value-

_x000D_
_x000D_
var a = [ 1, 5, 1, 6, 4, 5, 2, 5, 4, 3, 1, 2, 6, 6, 3, 3, 2, 4 ];_x000D_
_x000D_
var unique = a.filter(function(itm, i, a) {_x000D_
    return i == a.indexOf(itm);_x000D_
});_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(unique);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

If supporting IE8 and below is primary, don't use the unsupported filter method.

Otherwise,

if (!Array.prototype.filter) {
    Array.prototype.filter = function(fun, scope) {
        var T = this, A = [], i = 0, itm, L = T.length;
        if (typeof fun == 'function') {
            while(i < L) {
                if (i in T) {
                    itm = T[i];
                    if (fun.call(scope, itm, i, T)) A[A.length] = itm;
                }
                ++i;
            }
        }
        return A;
    }
}

Format Float to n decimal places

You can use Decimal format if you want to format number into a string, for example:

String a = "123455";
System.out.println(new
DecimalFormat(".0").format(Float.valueOf(a)));

The output of this code will be:

123455.0

You can add more zeros to the decimal format, depends on the output that you want.

android listview item height

The trick for me was not setting the height -- but instead setting the minHeight. This must be applied to the root view of whatever layout your custom adapter is using to render each row.

How to decrypt Hash Password in Laravel

Short answer is that you don't 'decrypt' the password (because it's not encrypted - it's hashed).

The long answer is that you shouldn't send the user their password by email, or any other way. If the user has forgotten their password, you should send them a password reset email, and allow them to change their password on your website.

Laravel has most of this functionality built in (see the Laravel documentation - I'm not going to replicate it all here. Also available for versions 4.2 and 5.0 of Laravel).

For further reading, check out this 'blogoverflow' post: Why passwords should be hashed.

Finding an element in an array in Java

There is a contains method for lists, so you should be able to do:

Arrays.asList(yourArray).contains(yourObject);

Warning: this might not do what you (or I) expect, see Tom's comment below.

What is difference between monolithic and micro kernel?

Monolithic kernel

All the parts of a kernel like the Scheduler, File System, Memory Management, Networking Stacks, Device Drivers, etc., are maintained in one unit within the kernel in Monolithic Kernel

Advantages

•Faster processing

Disadvantages

•Crash Insecure •Porting Inflexibility •Kernel Size explosion

Examples •MS-DOS, Unix, Linux

Micro kernel

Only the very important parts like IPC(Inter process Communication), basic scheduler, basic memory handling, basic I/O primitives etc., are put into the kernel. Communication happen via message passing. Others are maintained as server processes in User Space

Advantages

•Crash Resistant, Portable, Smaller Size

Disadvantages

•Slower Processing due to additional Message Passing

Examples •Windows NT

You're close, you just need to delete the file before trying to over-write it.

Kubernetes Pod fails with CrashLoopBackOff

I ran into the same error.

NAME         READY   STATUS             RESTARTS   AGE
pod/webapp   0/1     CrashLoopBackOff   5          47h

My problem was that I was trying to run two different pods with the same metadata name.

kind: Pod metadata: name: webapp labels: ...

To find all the names of your pods run: kubectl get pods

NAME         READY   STATUS    RESTARTS   AGE
webapp       1/1     Running   15         47h

then I changed the conflicting pod name and everything worked just fine.

NAME                 READY   STATUS    RESTARTS   AGE
webapp               1/1     Running   17         2d
webapp-release-0-5   1/1     Running   0          13m

Can you do a partial checkout with Subversion?

Not in any especially useful way, no. You can check out subtrees (as in Bobby Jack's suggestion), but then you lose the ability to update/commit them atomically; to do that, they need to be placed under their common parent, and as soon as you check out the common parent, you'll download everything under that parent. Non-recursive isn't a good option, because you want updates and commits to be recursive.

Is it possible to make an HTML anchor tag not clickable/linkable using CSS?

It can be done in css and it is very simple. change the "a" to a "p". Your "page link" does not lead to somewhere anyway if you want to make it unclickable.

When you tell your css to do a hover action on this specific "p" tell it this:

(for this example I have given the "p" the "example" ID)

#example
{
  cursor:default;
}

Now your cursor will stay the same as it does all over the page.

Storing Images in PostgreSQL

In the database, there are two options:

  • bytea. Stores the data in a column, exported as part of a backup. Uses standard database functions to save and retrieve. Recommended for your needs.
  • blobs. Stores the data externally, not normally exported as part of a backup. Requires special database functions to save and retrieve.

I've used bytea columns with great success in the past storing 10+gb of images with thousands of rows. PG's TOAST functionality pretty much negates any advantage that blobs have. You'll need to include metadata columns in either case for filename, content-type, dimensions, etc.

How to import multiple csv files in a single load?

Ex1:

ORA-30926: unable to get a stable set of rows in the source tables

Had the error today on a 12c and none of the existing answers fit (no duplicates, no non-deterministic expressions in the WHERE clause). My case was related to that other possible cause of the error, according to Oracle's message text (emphasis below):

ORA-30926: unable to get a stable set of rows in the source tables
Cause: A stable set of rows could not be got because of large dml activity or a non-deterministic where clause.

The merge was part of a larger batch, and was executed on a live database with many concurrent users. There was no need to change the statement. I just committed the transaction before the merge, then ran the merge separately, and committed again. So the solution was found in the suggested action of the message:

Action: Remove any non-deterministic where clauses and reissue the dml.

How to reload a page using JavaScript

Assign output of os.system to a variable and prevent it from being displayed on the screen

From "Equivalent of Bash Backticks in Python", which I asked a long time ago, what you may want to use is popen:

os.popen('cat /etc/services').read()

From the docs for Python 3.6,

This is implemented using subprocess.Popen; see that class’s documentation for more powerful ways to manage and communicate with subprocesses.

Here's the corresponding code for subprocess:

libpthread.so.0: error adding symbols: DSO missing from command line

If you are using CMake, there are some ways that you could solve it:

Solution 1: The most elegant one

add_executable(...)
target_include_directories(...)
target_link_libraries(target_name pthread)

Solution 2: using CMake find_package

find_package(Threads REQUIRED) # this will generate the flag for CMAKE_THREAD_LIBS_INIT

add_executable(...)
target_include_directories(...)
target_link_libraries(target_name ${CMAKE_THREAD_LIBS_INIT})

Solution 3: Change CMake flags

# e.g. with C++ 17, change to other version if you need
set(CMAKE_CXX_STANDARD 17)
set(CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS "${CMAKE_CXX_FLAGS} -std=c++17 -pthread")

JPA CriteriaBuilder - How to use "IN" comparison operator

If I understand well, you want to Join ScheduleRequest with User and apply the in clause to the userName property of the entity User.

I'd need to work a bit on this schema. But you can try with this trick, that is much more readable than the code you posted, and avoids the Join part (because it handles the Join logic outside the Criteria Query).

List<String> myList = new ArrayList<String> ();
for (User u : usersList) {
    myList.add(u.getUsername());
}
Expression<String> exp = scheduleRequest.get("createdBy");
Predicate predicate = exp.in(myList);
criteria.where(predicate);

In order to write more type-safe code you could also use Metamodel by replacing this line:

Expression<String> exp = scheduleRequest.get("createdBy");

with this:

Expression<String> exp = scheduleRequest.get(ScheduleRequest_.createdBy);

If it works, then you may try to add the Join logic into the Criteria Query. But right now I can't test it, so I prefer to see if somebody else wants to try.

Not a perfect answer though may be code snippets might help.

ListBox with ItemTemplate (and ScrollBar!)

ListBox will try to expand in height that is available.. When you set the Height property of ListBox you get a scrollviewer that actually works...

If you wish your ListBox to accodate the height available, you might want to try to regulate the Height from your parent controls.. In a Grid for example, setting the Height to Auto in your RowDefinition might do the trick...

Default session timeout for Apache Tomcat applications

Open $CATALINA_BASE/conf/web.xml and find this

<!-- ==================== Default Session Configuration ================= -->
<!-- You can set the default session timeout (in minutes) for all newly -->
<!-- created sessions by modifying the value below. -->

<session-config>
  <session-timeout>30</session-timeout>
</session-config>

all webapps implicitly inherit from this default web descriptor. You can override session-config as well as other settings defined there in your web.xml.

This is actually from my Tomcat 7 (Windows) but I think 5.5 conf is not very different

Why do I need to explicitly push a new branch?

You don't, see below

I find this 'feature' rather annoying since I'm not trying to launch rockets to the moon, just push my damn branch. You probably do too or else you wouldn't be here!

Here is the fix: if you want it to implicitly push for the current branch regardless of if that branch exists on origin just issue this command once and you will never have to again anywhere:

git config --global push.default current

So if you make branches like this:

git checkout -b my-new-branch

and then make some commits and then do a

git push -u

to get them out to origin (being on that branch) and it will create said branch for you if it doesn't exist.

Note the -u bit makes sure they are linked if you were to pull later on from said branch. If you have no plans to pull the branch later (or are okay with another one liner if you do) -u is not necessary.

R solve:system is exactly singular

I guess your code uses somewhere in the second case a singular matrix (i.e. not invertible), and the solve function needs to invert it. This has nothing to do with the size but with the fact that some of your vectors are (probably) colinear.

Set height of chart in Chart.js

Seems like var ctx = $('#myChart'); is returning a list of elements. You would need to reference the first by using ctx[0]. Also height is a property, not a function.

I did it this way in my code:

var ctx = document.getElementById("myChart");
ctx.height = 500;

how to send multiple data with $.ajax() jquery

You can create an object of key/value pairs and jQuery will do the rest for you:

$.ajax({
    ...
    data : { foo : 'bar', bar : 'foo' },
    ...
});

This way the data will be properly encoded automatically. If you do want to concoct you own string then make sure to use encodeURIComponent(): https://developer.mozilla.org/en/JavaScript/Reference/Global_Objects/encodeURIComponent

Your current code is not working because the string is not concocted properly:

'id='+ id  & 'name='+ name

should be:

'id='+ encodeURIComponent(id) + '&name='+ encodeURIComponent(name)

Python 3 print without parenthesis

Although you need a pair of parentheses to print in Python 3, you no longer need a space after print, because it's a function. So that's only a single extra character.

If you still find typing a single pair of parentheses to be "unnecessarily time-consuming," you can do p = print and save a few characters that way. Because you can bind new references to functions but not to keywords, you can only do this print shortcut in Python 3.

Python 2:

>>> p = print
  File "<stdin>", line 1
    p = print
            ^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax

Python 3:

>>> p = print
>>> p('hello')
hello

It'll make your code less readable, but you'll save those few characters every time you print something.

What difference between the DATE, TIME, DATETIME, and TIMESTAMP Types

Saty described the differences between them. For your practice, you can use datetime in order to keep the output of NOW().

For example:

CREATE TABLE Orders
(
  OrderId int NOT NULL,
  ProductName varchar(50) NOT NULL,
  OrderDate datetime NOT NULL DEFAULT NOW(),
  PRIMARY KEY (OrderId)
)

Use the XmlInclude or SoapInclude attribute to specify types that are not known statically

I agree with bizl

[XmlInclude(typeof(ParentOfTheItem))]
[Serializable]
public abstract class WarningsType{ }

also if you need to apply this included class to an object item you can do like that

[System.Xml.Serialization.XmlElementAttribute("Warnings", typeof(WarningsType))]
public object[] Items
{
    get
    {
        return this.itemsField;
    }
    set

How to register multiple servlets in web.xml in one Spring application

As explained in this thread on the cxf-user mailing list, rather than having the CXFServlet load its own spring context from user-webservice-servlet.xml, you can just load the whole lot into the root context. Rename your existing user-webservice-servlet.xml to some other name (e.g. user-webservice-beans.xml) then change your contextConfigLocation parameter to something like:

<servlet>
  <servlet-name>myservlet</servlet-name>
  <servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class>
  <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup>
</servlet>

<servlet-mapping>
  <servlet-name>myservlet</servlet-name>
  <url-pattern>*.htm</url-pattern>
</servlet-mapping>

<context-param>
  <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name>
  <param-value>
    /WEB-INF/applicationContext.xml
    /WEB-INF/user-webservice-beans.xml
  </param-value>
</context-param>

<servlet>
  <servlet-name>user-webservice</servlet-name>
  <servlet-class>org.apache.cxf.transport.servlet.CXFServlet</servlet-class>
  <load-on-startup>2</load-on-startup>

Display UIViewController as Popup in iPhone

You can use EzPopup (https://github.com/huynguyencong/EzPopup), it is a Swift pod and very easy to use:

// init YourViewController
let contentVC = ...

// Init popup view controller with content is your content view controller
let popupVC = PopupViewController(contentController: contentVC, popupWidth: 100, popupHeight: 200)

// show it by call present(_ , animated:) method from a current UIViewController
present(popupVC, animated: true)

How to add a new row to datagridview programmatically

If you are binding a List

List<Student> student = new List<Student>();

dataGridView1.DataSource = student.ToList();
student .Add(new Student());

//Reset the Datasource
dataGridView1.DataSource = null;
dataGridView1.DataSource = student;

If you are binding DataTable

DataTable table = new DataTable();

 DataRow newRow = table.NewRow();

// Add the row to the rows collection.
table.Rows.Add(newRow);

nginx- duplicate default server error

You likely have other files (such as the default configuration) located in /etc/nginx/sites-enabled that needs to be removed.

This issue is caused by a repeat of the default_server parameter supplied to one or more listen directives in your files. You'll likely find this conflicting directive reads something similar to:

listen 80 default_server;

As the nginx core module documentation for listen states:

The default_server parameter, if present, will cause the server to become the default server for the specified address:port pair. If none of the directives have the default_server parameter then the first server with the address:port pair will be the default server for this pair.

This means that there must be another file or server block defined in your configuration with default_server set for port 80. nginx is encountering that first before your mysite.com file so try removing or adjusting that other configuration.

If you are struggling to find where these directives and parameters are set, try a search like so:

grep -R default_server /etc/nginx

LINQ select one field from list of DTO objects to array

In the case you're interested in extremely minor, almost immeasurable performance increases, add a constructor to your Line class, giving you such:

public class Line
{
    public Line(string sku, int qty)
    {
        this.Sku = sku;
        this.Qty = qty;
    }

    public string Sku { get; set; }
    public int Qty    { get; set; }
}

Then create a specialized collection class based on List<Line> with one new method, Add:

public class LineList : List<Line>
{
    public void Add(string sku, int qty)
    {
        this.Add(new Line(sku, qty));
    }
}

Then the code which populates your list gets a bit less verbose by using a collection initializer:

LineList myLines = new LineList
{
    { "ABCD1", 1 },
    { "ABCD2", 1 },
    { "ABCD3", 1 }
};

And, of course, as the other answers state, it's trivial to extract the SKUs into a string array with LINQ:

string[] mySKUsArray = myLines.Select(myLine => myLine.Sku).ToArray();

Github permission denied: ssh add agent has no identities

This worked for me:

Then, type this: ssh-add ~/.ssh/id_rsa

Does this app use the Advertising Identifier (IDFA)? - AdMob 6.8.0

If you are lazy to check on each third party SDK if they use or not the IDFA you can use this command:
fgrep -R advertisingIdentifier . (don't forget the dot at the end of the command)

Go to your project/workspace folder and run the command to find which files are using the advertising identifier.

Then you just have to look in the guidelines of those SDKs to see what you need to do about the IDFA.

SQL Server error on update command - "A severe error occurred on the current command"

One other possible solution we just found after having this issue across multiple databases/tables on the same server.

Is the max connections open to the sql server. We had an app that wasn't closing it's SQL connection and was leaving them open so we were running around 28K-31K connections (SQL Sever has a max out at 32K ish), and we noticed that once we killed a few thousand sleeping connections it took care of the error listed on this question.

The fix was to update the apps to make sure they closed their connections instead of leaving them open.

How to switch from the default ConstraintLayout to RelativeLayout in Android Studio

The easiest method is to go to your .xml file in text mode, and replace the top line:

<android.support.constraint.ConstraintLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"

And then proceed to replace it with:

<android.widget.RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"

If you then go back into design mode, you can see that you now have a relative layout. This also automatically changes the end tag, so no issues there.

How do I download a file with Angular2 or greater

How about this?

          a.href = URL.createObjectURL(res.blob());
          a.download = fileName;
          // start download
          a.click();
        })

I could do with it.

CSS selector last row from main table

Your tables should have as immediate children just tbody and thead elements, with the rows within*. So, amend the HTML to be:

<table border="1" width="100%" id="test">
  <tbody>
    <tr>
     <td>
      <table border="1" width="100%">
        <tbody>
          <tr>
            <td>table 2</td>
          </tr>
        </tbody>
      </table>
     </td>
    </tr>
    <tr><td>table 1</td></tr>
    <tr><td>table 1</td></tr>
    <tr><td>table 1</td></tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

Then amend your selector slightly to this:

#test > tbody > tr:last-child { background:#ff0000; }

See it in action here. That makes use of the child selector, which:

...separates two selectors and matches only those elements matched by the second selector that are direct children of elements matched by the first.

So, you are targeting only direct children of tbody elements that are themselves direct children of your #test table.

Alternative solution

The above is the neatest solution, as you don't need to over-ride any styles. The alternative would be to stick with your current set-up, and over-ride the background style for the inner table, like this:

#test tr:last-child { background:#ff0000; }
#test table tr:last-child { background:transparent; }

* It's not mandatory but most (all?) browsers will add these in, so it's best to make it explicit. As @BoltClock states in the comments:

...it's now set in stone in HTML5, so for a browser to be compliant it basically must behave this way.

CSS Background image not loading

If you place image and css folder inside a parent directory suppose assets then the following code works perfectly. Either double quote or without a double quote both work fine.

_x000D_
_x000D_
body{_x000D_
   background: url("../image/bg.jpg");_x000D_
}
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

In other cases like if you call a class and try to put a background image in a particular location then you must mention height and width as well.

Android activity life cycle - what are all these methods for?

  • Created
  • Started
  • Resumed
  • Paused
  • Stopped
  • Destroyed

Activity lifecycle has seven methods

  • onCreate()
  • onStart()
  • onResume()
  • onPause()
  • onStop()
  • onRestart()
  • onDestroy()

activity life cycle

Situations

  • When open the app

    onCreate() --> onStart() -->  onResume()

  • When back button pressed and exit the app

    onPaused() -- > onStop() --> onDestory()

  • When home button pressed

    onPaused() --> onStop()

  • When phone screen off

    onPaused() --> onStop()

How to replace multiple white spaces with one white space

A regular expressoin would be the easiest way. If you write the regex the correct way, you wont need multiple calls.

Change it to this:

string s = System.Text.RegularExpressions.Regex.Replace(s, @"\s{2,}", " ");

How to use onResume()?

The best way to understand would be to have all the LifeCycle methods overridden in your activity and placing a breakpoint(if checking in emulator) or a Log in each one of them. You'll get to know which one gets called when.

Just as an spoiler, onCreate() gets called first, then if you paused the activity by either going to home screen or by launching another activity, onPause() gets called. If the OS destroys the activity in the meantime, onDestroy() gets called. If you resume the app and the app already got destroyed, onCreate() will get called, or else onResume() will get called.

Edit: I forgot about onStop(), it gets called before onDestroy().

Do the exercise I mentioned and you'll be having a better understanding.

Is it possible to install another version of Python to Virtualenv?

Pre-requisites:

  1. sudo easy_install virtualenv
  2. sudo pip install virtualenvwrapper

Installing virtualenv with Python2.6:

  1. You could manually download, build and install another version of Python to /usr/local or another location.

  2. If it's another location other than /usr/local, add it to your PATH.

  3. Reload your shell to pick up the updated PATH.

  4. From this point on, you should be able to call the following 2 python binaries from your shell python2.5 and python2.6

  5. Create a new instance of virtualenv with python2.6:

    mkvirtualenv --python=python2.6 yournewenv

Memcache Vs. Memcached

They are not identical. Memcache is older but it has some limitations. I was using just fine in my application until I realized you can't store literal FALSE in cache. Value FALSE returned from the cache is the same as FALSE returned when a value is not found in the cache. There is no way to check which is which. Memcached has additional method (among others) Memcached::getResultCode that will tell you whether key was found.

Because of this limitation I switched to storing empty arrays instead of FALSE in cache. I am still using Memcache, but I just wanted to put this info out there for people who are deciding.

How to convert an image to base64 encoding?

Very simple and to be commonly used:

function getDataURI($imagePath) {
    $finfo = new finfo(FILEINFO_MIME_TYPE);
    $type = $finfo->file($imagePath);
    return 'data:'.$type.';base64,'.base64_encode(file_get_contents($imagePath));
}

//Use the above function like below:
echo '<img src="'.getDataURI('./images/my-file.svg').'" alt="">';
echo '<img src="'.getDataURI('./images/my-file.png').'" alt="">';

Note: The Mime-Type of the file will be added automatically (taking help from this PHP documentation).

Check if a process is running or not on Windows with Python

You can not rely on lock files in Linux or Windows. I would just bite the bullet and iterate through all the running programs. I really do not believe it will be as "expensive" as you think. psutil is an excellent cross-platform python module cable of enumerating all the running programs on a system.

import psutil
"someProgram" in (p.name() for p in psutil.process_iter())

PHP - count specific array values

If you want to count ALL the same occurences inside the array, here's a function to count them all, and return the results as a multi-dimensional array:

function countSame($array) {

$count = count($array);
$storeArray = array();
while ($count > 0) {
$count--;

if ($array[$count]) {
$a = $array[$count];
$counts = array_count_values($array);
$counts = $counts[$a];
$tempArray = array($a, $counts);
array_push($storeArray, $tempArray);

$keys = array_keys($array, $a);
foreach ($keys as $k) {
unset($array[$k]);
} //end of foreach ($keys as $k)
} //end of if ($array[$count])

} //end of while ($count > 0)

return $storeArray;

} //end of function countSame($array)

Calling a phone number in swift

If your phone number contains spaces, remove them first! Then you can use the accepted answer's solution.

    } else {
        UIApplication.shared.openURL(url)
    }
}

How to stop java process gracefully?

Shutdown hooks execute in all cases where the VM is not forcibly killed. So, if you were to issue a "standard" kill (SIGTERM from a kill command) then they will execute. Similarly, they will execute after calling System.exit(int).

However a hard kill (kill -9 or kill -SIGKILL) then they won't execute. Similarly (and obviously) they won't execute if you pull the power from the computer, drop it into a vat of boiling lava, or beat the CPU into pieces with a sledgehammer. You probably already knew that, though.

Finalizers really should run as well, but it's best not to rely on that for shutdown cleanup, but rather rely on your shutdown hooks to stop things cleanly. And, as always, be careful with deadlocks (I've seen far too many shutdown hooks hang the entire process)!

How to check if number is divisible by a certain number?

        Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
        int x;
        x = input.nextInt();
         if (x % 2==0){
             System.out.println("The integer number you entered is divisible by 2");
         }
         else{
             System.out.println("The integer number you entered is not divisible by 2");
             if(x % 5==0){
                 System.out.println("The integer number you entered is divisible by 5");
             }
             else{

             }

dplyr mutate with conditional values

With dplyr 0.7.2, you can use the very useful case_when function :

x=read.table(
 text="V1 V2 V3 V4
 1  1  2  3  5
 2  2  4  4  1
 3  1  4  1  1
 4  4  5  1  3
 5  5  5  5  4")
x$V5 = case_when(x$V1==1 & x$V2!=4 ~ 1,
                 x$V2==4 & x$V3!=1 ~ 2,
                 TRUE ~ 0)

Expressed with dplyr::mutate, it gives:

x = x %>% mutate(
     V5 = case_when(
         V1==1 & V2!=4 ~ 1,
         V2==4 & V3!=1 ~ 2,
         TRUE ~ 0
     )
)

Please note that NA are not treated specially, as it can be misleading. The function will return NA only when no condition is matched. If you put a line with TRUE ~ ..., like I did in my example, the return value will then never be NA.

Therefore, you have to expressively tell case_when to put NA where it belongs by adding a statement like is.na(x$V1) | is.na(x$V3) ~ NA_integer_. Hint: the dplyr::coalesce() function can be really useful here sometimes!

Moreover, please note that NA alone will usually not work, you have to put special NA values : NA_integer_, NA_character_ or NA_real_.

Is it possible to have SSL certificate for IP address, not domain name?

According to this answer, it is possible, but rarely used.

As for how to get it: I would tend to simply try and order one with the provider of your choice, and enter the IP address instead of a domain during the ordering process.

However, running a site on an IP address to avoid the DNS lookup sounds awfully like unnecessary micro-optimization to me. You will save a few milliseconds at best, and that is per visit, as DNS results are cached on multiple levels.

I don't think your idea makes sense from an optimization viewpoint.

React - Display loading screen while DOM is rendering?

I'm using react-progress-2 npm package, which is zero-dependency and works great in ReactJS.

https://github.com/milworm/react-progress-2

Installation:

npm install react-progress-2

Include react-progress-2/main.css to your project.

import "node_modules/react-progress-2/main.css";

Include react-progress-2 and put it somewhere in the top-component, for example:

import React from "react";
import Progress from "react-progress-2";

var Layout = React.createClass({
render: function() {
    return (
        <div className="layout">
            <Progress.Component/>
                {/* other components go here*/}
            </div>
        );
    }
});

Now, whenever you need to show an indicator, just call Progress.show(), for example:

loadFeed: function() {
    Progress.show();
    // do your ajax thing.
},

onLoadFeedCallback: function() {
    Progress.hide();
    // render feed.
}

Please note, that show and hide calls are stacked, so after n-consecutive show calls, you need to do n hide calls to hide an indicator or you can use Progress.hideAll().

Deleting specific rows from DataTable

If you delete an item from a collection, that collection has been changed and you can't continue to enumerate through it.

Instead, use a For loop, such as:

for(int i = dtPerson.Rows.Count-1; i >= 0; i--)
{
    DataRow dr = dtPerson.Rows[i];
    if (dr["name"] == "Joe")
        dr.Delete();
}
dtPerson.AcceptChanges();

Note that you are iterating in reverse to avoid skipping a row after deleting the current index.

Display Last Saved Date on worksheet

May be this time stamp fit you better Code

Function LastInputTimeStamp() As Date
  LastInputTimeStamp = Now()
End Function

and each time you input data in defined cell (in my example below it is cell C36) you'll get a new constant time stamp. As an example in Excel file may use this

=IF(C36>0,LastInputTimeStamp(),"")

MySQL: Delete all rows older than 10 minutes

If time_created is a unix timestamp (int), you should be able to use something like this:

DELETE FROM locks WHERE time_created < (UNIX_TIMESTAMP() - 600);

(600 seconds = 10 minutes - obviously)

Otherwise (if time_created is mysql timestamp), you could try this:

DELETE FROM locks WHERE time_created < (NOW() - INTERVAL 10 MINUTE)

restrict edittext to single line

Also it's important to pay attention if the property android:inputType is textMultiLine. If so, the properties android:singleLine, android:imeOptions, android:ellipsize and android maxLines will be ignored and your EditText will accepted MultiLines anyway.

Semaphore vs. Monitors - what's the difference?

When a semaphore is used to guard a critical region, there is no direct relationship between the semaphore and the data being protected. This is part of the reason why semaphores may be dispersed around the code, and why it is easy to forget to call wait or notify, in which case the result will be, respectively, to violate mutual exclusion or to lock the resource permanently.

In contrast, niehter of these bad things can happen with a monitor. A monitor is tired directly to the data (it encapsulates the data) and, because the monitor operations are atomic actions, it is impossible to write code that can access the data without calling the entry protocol. The exit protocol is called automatically when the monitor operation is completed.

A monitor has a built-in mechanism for condition synchronisation in the form of condition variable before proceeding. If the condition is not satisfied, the process has to wait until it is notified of a change in the condition. When a process is waiting for condition synchronisation, the monitor implementation takes care of the mutual exclusion issue, and allows another process to gain access to the monitor.

Change image size via parent div

Actually using 100% will not make the image bigger if the image is smaller than the div size you specified. You need to set one of the dimensions, height or width in order to have all images fill the space. In my experience it's better to have the height set so each row is the same size, then all items wrap to next line properly. This will produce an output similar to fotolia.com (stock image website)

with css:

parent {
   width: 42px; /* I took the width from your post and placed it in css */
   height: 42px;
}

/* This will style any <img> element in .parent div */
.parent img {
   height: 42px;
}

without:

<div style="height:42px;width:42px">
    <img style="height:42px" src="http://someimage.jpg">
</div>

How to get Spinner value?

If you already know the item is a String, I prefer:

String itemText = (String) mySpinner.getSelectedItem();

Calling toString() on an Object that you know is a String seems like a more roundabout path than just casting the Object to String.

php codeigniter count rows

If you really want to count all rows. You can use this in model function:

$this->db->select('count(*)');
$query = $this->db->get('home');
$cnt = $query->row_array();
return $cnt['count(*)'];

It returns single value, that is row count

Upload Progress Bar in PHP

You would need to use Javascript to create a progress bar. A simple Google search led me to this article: WebAppers Simple Javascript Progress Bar with CSS.

Dojo File Upload Progress Bar Widget is another option using the Dojo Javascript framework.

EDIT: Assuming your uploading a large number of images (such as a photo album), and POSTing them to your PHP script, you could use javascript to read the results back from the post and update the progress bar based on the number of images uploaded / total number of images. This has the side effect of only updating after each post has completed. Check out here for some info on how to post with JS.

What's the Kotlin equivalent of Java's String[]?

To create an empty Array of Strings in Kotlin you should use one of the following six approaches:

First approach:

val empty = arrayOf<String>()

Second approach:

val empty = arrayOf("","","")

Third approach:

val empty = Array<String?>(3) { null }

Fourth approach:

val empty = arrayOfNulls<String>(3)

Fifth approach:

val empty = Array<String>(3) { "it = $it" }

Sixth approach:

val empty = Array<String>(0, { _ -> "" })

Python speed testing - Time Difference - milliseconds

Here is a custom function that mimic's Matlab's/Octave's tic toc functions.

Example of use:

time_var = time_me(); # get a variable with the current timestamp

... run operation ...

time_me(time_var); # print the time difference (e.g. '5 seconds 821.12314 ms')

Function :

def time_me(*arg):
    if len(arg) != 0:

C# - Create SQL Server table programmatically

If you don't like remembering SQL syntax, using Mig# you can simply:

var schema = new DbSchema(ConnectionString, DbPlatform.SqlServer2014);
schema.Alter(db => db.CreateTable("Customer")
     .WithPrimaryKeyColumn("Id", DbType.Int32).AsIdentity()
     .WithNotNullableColumn("First_Name", DbType.String).OfSize(50)
     .WithNotNullableColumn("Last_Name", DbType.String).OfSize(50)
     ...);

If you are not sure if it already exists, call DropIfExists before:

db.Tables["Customers"].DropIfExists();

Below command is working for me. Which is working with variables

What is the "realm" in basic authentication

From RFC 1945 (HTTP/1.0) and RFC 2617 (HTTP Authentication referenced by HTTP/1.1)

The realm attribute (case-insensitive) is required for all authentication schemes which issue a challenge. The realm value (case-sensitive), in combination with the canonical root URL of the server being accessed, defines the protection space. These realms allow the protected resources on a server to be partitioned into a set of protection spaces, each with its own authentication scheme and/or authorization database. The realm value is a string, generally assigned by the origin server, which may have additional semantics specific to the authentication scheme.

In short, pages in the same realm should share credentials. If your credentials work for a page with the realm "My Realm", it should be assumed that the same username and password combination should work for another page with the same realm.

Using awk to print all columns from the nth to the last

This awk function returns substring of $0 that includes fields from begin to end:

function fields(begin, end,    b, e, p, i) {
    b = 0; e = 0; p = 0;
    for (i = 1; i <= NF; ++i) {
        if (begin == i) { b = p; }
        p += length($i);
        e = p;
        if (end == i) { break; }
        p += length(FS);
    }
    return substr($0, b + 1, e - b);
}

To get everything starting from field 3:

tail = fields(3);

To get section of $0 that covers fields 3 to 5:

middle = fields(3, 5);

b, e, p, i nonsense in function parameter list is just an awk way of declaring local variables.

Difference between jQuery parent(), parents() and closest() functions

There is difference between both $(this).closest('div') and $(this).parents('div').eq(0)

Basically closest start matching element from the current element whereas parents start matching elements from parent (one level above the current element)

See http://jsfiddle.net/imrankabir/c1jhocre/1/

Is there a way to avoid null check before the for-each loop iteration starts?

How much shorter do you want it to be? It is only an extra 2 lines AND it is clear and concise logic.

I think the more important thing you need to decide is if null is a valid value or not. If they are not valid, you should write you code to prevent it from happening. Then you would not need this kind of check. If you go get an exception while doing a foreach loop, that is a sign that there is a bug somewhere else in your code.

You can't go through the details of the method by using the step over. If you want to skip the current line, you can use step over, then you only need to press the F6 for only once to move to the next line. And if you think there's someting wrong within the method, use F5 to examine the details.

How do I pass variables and data from PHP to JavaScript?

I have come out with an easy method to assign JavaScript variables using PHP.

It uses HTML5 data attributes to store PHP variables and then it's assigned to JavaScript on page load.

A complete tutorial can be found here.

Example:

<?php
    $variable_1 = "QNimate";
    $variable_2 = "QScutter";
?>
    <span id="storage" data-variable-one="<?php echo $variable_1; ?>" data-variable-two="<?php echo $variable_2; ?>"></span>
<?php

Here is the JavaScript code

var variable_1 = undefined;
var variable_2 = undefined;

window.onload = function(){
    variable_1 = document.getElementById("storage").getAttribute("data-variable-one");
    variable_2 = document.getElementById("storage").getAttribute("data-variable-two");
}

Handling very large numbers in Python

python supports arbitrarily large integers naturally:

example:

>>> 10**1000

You could even get, for example of a huge integer value, fib(4000000).

But still it does not (for now) supports an arbitrarily large float !!

If you need one big, large, float then check up on the decimal Module. There are examples of use on these foruns: OverflowError: (34, 'Result too large')

Another reference: http://docs.python.org/2/library/decimal.html

You can even using the gmpy module if you need a speed-up (which is likely to be of your interest): Handling big numbers in code

What does $@ mean in a shell script?

From the manual:

@

Expands to the positional parameters, starting from one. When the expansion occurs within double quotes, each parameter expands to a separate word. That is, "$@" is equivalent to "$1" "$2" .... If the double-quoted expansion occurs within a word, the expansion of the first parameter is joined with the beginning part of the original word, and the expansion of the last parameter is joined with the last part of the original word. When there are no positional parameters, "$@" and $@ expand to nothing (i.e., they are removed).

Checking if an Android application is running in the background

Since Android API 16 there is a simple way to check if app is in foreground. It may not be foolproof, but no methods on Android are foolproof. This method is good enough to use when your service receives update from server and has to decide whether to show notification, or not (because if UI is foreground, user will notice the update without notification).

ActivityManager.getMyMemoryState(myProcess);

npm install from Git in a specific version

If you're doing this with more than one module and want to have more control over versions, you should look into having your own private npm registry.

This way you can npm publish your modules to your private npm registry and use package.json entries the same way you would for public modules.

Writing html form data to a txt file without the use of a webserver

I know this is old, but it's the first example of saving form data to a txt file I found in a quick search. So I've made a couple edits to the above code that makes it work more smoothly. It's now easier to add more fields, including the radio button as @user6573234 requested.

What does the construct x = x || y mean?

Double pipe stands for logical "OR". This is not really the case when the "parameter not set", since strictly in the javascript if you have code like this:

function foo(par) {
}

Then calls

foo()
foo("")
foo(null)
foo(undefined)
foo(0)

are not equivalent.

Double pipe (||) will cast the first argument to boolean and if resulting boolean is true - do the assignment otherwise it will assign the right part.

This matters if you check for unset parameter.

Let's say, we have a function setSalary that has one optional parameter. If user does not supply the parameter then the default value of 10 should be used.

if you do the check like this:

function setSalary(dollars) {
    salary = dollars || 10
}

This will give unexpected result on call like

setSalary(0)

It will still set the 10 following the flow described above.

'and' (boolean) vs '&' (bitwise) - Why difference in behavior with lists vs numpy arrays?

Operations with a Python list operate on the list. list1 and list2 will check if list1 is empty, and return list1 if it is, and list2 if it isn't. list1 + list2 will append list2 to list1, so you get a new list with len(list1) + len(list2) elements.

Operators that only make sense when applied element-wise, such as &, raise a TypeError, as element-wise operations aren't supported without looping through the elements.

Numpy arrays support element-wise operations. array1 & array2 will calculate the bitwise or for each corresponding element in array1 and array2. array1 + array2 will calculate the sum for each corresponding element in array1 and array2.

This does not work for and and or.

array1 and array2 is essentially a short-hand for the following code:

if bool(array1):
    return array2
else:
    return array1

For this you need a good definition of bool(array1). For global operations like used on Python lists, the definition is that bool(list) == True if list is not empty, and False if it is empty. For numpy's element-wise operations, there is some disambiguity whether to check if any element evaluates to True, or all elements evaluate to True. Because both are arguably correct, numpy doesn't guess and raises a ValueError when bool() is (indirectly) called on an array.

java.sql.SQLException Parameter index out of range (1 > number of parameters, which is 0)

This is an issue with the jdbc Driver version. I had this issue when I was using mysql-connector-java-commercial-5.0.3-bin.jar but when I changed to a later driver version mysql-connector-java-5.1.22.jar, the issue was fixed.

What does -> mean in Python function definitions?

In the following code:

def f(x) -> int:
    return int(x)

the -> int just tells that f() returns an integer (but it doesn't force the function to return an integer). It is called a return annotation, and can be accessed as f.__annotations__['return'].

Python also supports parameter annotations:

def f(x: float) -> int:
    return int(x)

: float tells people who read the program (and some third-party libraries/programs, e. g. pylint) that x should be a float. It is accessed as f.__annotations__['x'], and doesn't have any meaning by itself. See the documentation for more information:

https://docs.python.org/3/reference/compound_stmts.html#function-definitions https://www.python.org/dev/peps/pep-3107/

PreparedStatement with list of parameters in a IN clause

You need jdbc4 then you can use setArray!

In my case it didn't worked, as the UUID Datatype in postgres seems to still have its weak spots, but for the usual types it works.

Of course replace $VALUETYPE and myValuesAsArray with the correct values.

Remark following Marks comment:

Your database and the driver needs to support this! I tried Postgres 9.4 but I think this has been introduced earlier. You need a jdbc 4 driver, otherwise setArray won't be available. I used the postgresql 9.4-1201-jdbc41 driver that ships with spring boot

Storing Form Data as a Session Variable

Yes this is possible. kizzie is correct with the session_start(); having to go first.

another observation I made is that you need to filter your form data using:

var input = document.querySelector('form[name=myForm] #username');

input.onkeyup = function() {

DEFINITIVELY, a long answer and alot of scrolling. Also I struggled hard to pass the output of the queries to a text file. Here is how to do that without using the annoying into outfile thing-

tee E:/sqllogfile.txt;

And when you are done, stop the logging-

tee off;

Hope it adds more clarity.

One feature of the DataSet is that if you can call multiple select statements in your stored procedures, the DataSet will have one DataTable for each.

Include of non-modular header inside framework module

In case if you are developing your own framework:

WHY is this happening?

If any of the public header files you have mentioned in your module.modulemap have import statements that are not mentioned in modulemap, this will give you the error. Since it tries to import some header that is not declared as modular (in module.modulemap), it breaks the modularity of the framework.

HOW can I fix it?

Just include the header that gave the error to your module.modulemap and build again!

WHY NOT just set allow non-modular to YES?

Because it's not really a solution here, with that you tell your project "this framework was supposed to be modular but it's not. Use it somehow, I don't care." This doesn't fix your library's modularity problem.

How to print to stderr in Python?

I am working in python 3.4.3. I am cutting out a little typing that shows how I got here:

[18:19 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$ python3
>>> import sys
>>> print("testing", file=sys.stderr)
testing
>>>
[18:19 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$

Did it work? Try redirecting stderr to a file and see what happens:

[18:22 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$ python3 2> /tmp/test.txt
>>> import sys
>>> print("testing", file=sys.stderr)
>>> [18:22 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$
[18:22 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$ cat /tmp/test.txt
Python 3.4.3 (default, May  5 2015, 17:58:45)
[GCC 4.9.2] on cygwin
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
testing

[18:22 jsilverman@JSILVERMAN-LT7 pexpect]$

Well, aside from the fact that the little introduction that python gives you has been slurped into stderr (where else would it go?), it works.

Convert DataFrame column type from string to datetime, dd/mm/yyyy format

If you have a mixture of formats in your date, don't forget to set infer_datetime_format=True to make life easier.

df['date'] = pd.to_datetime(df['date'], infer_datetime_format=True)

Source: pd.to_datetime

or if you want a customized approach:

def autoconvert_datetime(value):
    formats = ['%m/%d/%Y', '%m-%d-%y']  # formats to try
    result_format = '%d-%m-%Y'  # output format
    for dt_format in formats:
        try:
            dt_obj = datetime.strptime(value, dt_format)
            return dt_obj.strftime(result_format)
        except Exception as e: # throws exception when format doesn't match
            pass
    return value # let it be if it doesn't match

df['date'] = df['date'].apply(autoconvert_datetime)

Return list from async/await method

you can use the following

private async Task<List<string>> GetItems()

    });
}

T-SQL split string

The often used approach with XML elements breaks in case of forbidden characters. This is an approach to use this method with any kind of character, even with the semicolon as delimiter.

The trick is, first to use SELECT SomeString AS [*] FOR XML PATH('') to get all forbidden characters properly escaped. That's the reason, why I replace the delimiter to a magic value to avoid troubles with ; as delimiter.

DECLARE @Dummy TABLE (ID INT, SomeTextToSplit NVARCHAR(MAX))
INSERT INTO @Dummy VALUES
 (1,N'A&B;C;D;E, F')
,(2,N'"C" & ''D'';<C>;D;E, F');

DECLARE @Delimiter NVARCHAR(10)=';'; --special effort needed (due to entities coding with "&code;")!

WITH Casted AS
(
    SELECT *
          ,CAST(N'<x>' + REPLACE((SELECT REPLACE(SomeTextToSplit,@Delimiter,N'§§Split$me$here§§') AS [*] FOR XML PATH('')),N'§§Split$me$here§§',N'</x><x>') + N'</x>' AS XML) AS SplitMe
    FROM @Dummy
)
SELECT Casted.ID
      ,x.value(N'.',N'nvarchar(max)') AS Part
FROM Casted
CROSS APPLY SplitMe.nodes(N'/x') AS A(x)

The result

ID  Part
1   A&B
1   C
1   D
1   E, F
2   "C" & 'D'
2   <C>
2   D
2   E, F

Using a PagedList with a ViewModel ASP.Net MVC

I figured out how to do this. I was building an application very similar to the example/tutorial you discussed in your original question.

Here's a snippet of the code that worked for me:

        int pageSize = 4;
        int pageNumber = (page ?? 1);
        //Used the following two formulas so that it doesn't round down on the returned integer
        decimal totalPages = ((decimal)(viewModel.Teachers.Count() /(decimal) pageSize));
        ViewBag.TotalPages = Math.Ceiling(totalPages);
        //These next two functions could maybe be reduced to one function....would require some testing and building
        viewModel.Teachers = viewModel.Teachers.ToPagedList(pageNumber, pageSize);
        ViewBag.OnePageofTeachers = viewModel.Teachers;
        ViewBag.PageNumber = pageNumber;

        return View(viewModel);

I added

using.PagedList;

to my controller as the tutorial states.

Now in my view my using statements etc at the top, NOTE i didnt change my using model statement.

@model CSHM.ViewModels.TeacherIndexData
@using PagedList;
@using PagedList.Mvc;
<link href="~/Content/PagedList.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" />

and then at the bottom to build my paged list I used the following and it seems to work. I haven't yet built in the functionality for current sort, showing related data, filters, etc but i dont think it will be that difficult.

Page @ViewBag.PageNumber of @ViewBag.TotalPages

@Html.PagedListPager((IPagedList)ViewBag.OnePageofTeachers, page => Url.Action("Index", new { page }))

Hope that works for you. Let me know if it works!!

Opening a SQL Server .bak file (Not restoring!)

From SQL Server 2008 SSMS (SQL Server Management Studio), simply:

  1. Connect to your database instance (for example, "localhost\sqlexpress")
  2. Either:

    • a) Select the database you want to restore to; or, alternatively
    • b) Just create a new, empty database to restore to.
  3. Right-click, Tasks, Restore, Database

  4. Device, [...], Add, Browse to your .bak file
  5. Select the backup.
    Choose "overwrite=Y" under options.
    Restore the database
  6. It should say "100% complete", and your database should be on-line.

PS: Again, I emphasize: you can easily do this on a "scratch database" - you do not need to overwrite your current database. But you do need to RESTORE.

PPS: You can also accomplish the same thing with T-SQL commands, if you wished to script it.

How to view the current heap size that an application is using?

You can do it by MXBeans

public class Check {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        MemoryMXBean memBean = ManagementFactory.getMemoryMXBean() ;
        MemoryUsage heapMemoryUsage = memBean.getHeapMemoryUsage();

        System.out.println(heapMemoryUsage.getMax()); // max memory allowed for jvm -Xmx flag (-1 if isn't specified)
        System.out.println(heapMemoryUsage.getCommitted()); // given memory to JVM by OS ( may fail to reach getMax, if there isn't more memory)
        System.out.println(heapMemoryUsage.getUsed()); // used now by your heap
        System.out.println(heapMemoryUsage.getInit()); // -Xms flag

        // |------------------ max ------------------------| allowed to be occupied by you from OS (less than xmX due to empty survival space)
        // |------------------ committed -------|          | now taken from OS
        // |------------------ used --|                    | used by your heap

    }
}

But remember it is equivalent to Runtime.getRuntime() (took depicted schema from here)

memoryMxBean.getHeapMemoryUsage().getUsed()      <=> runtime.totalMemory() - runtime.freeMemory()
memoryMxBean.getHeapMemoryUsage().getCommitted() <=> runtime.totalMemory()
memoryMxBean.getHeapMemoryUsage().getMax()       <=> runtime.maxMemory()

from javaDoc

init - represents the initial amount of memory (in bytes) that the Java virtual machine requests from the operating system for memory management during startup. The Java virtual machine may request additional memory from the operating system and may also release memory to the system over time. The value of init may be undefined.

used - represents the amount of memory currently used (in bytes).

committed - represents the amount of memory (in bytes) that is guaranteed to be available for use by the Java virtual machine. The amount of committed memory may change over time (increase or decrease). The Java virtual machine may release memory to the system and committed could be less than init. committed will always be greater than or equal to used.

max - represents the maximum amount of memory (in bytes) that can be used for memory management. Its value may be undefined. The maximum amount of memory may change over time if defined. The amount of used and committed memory will always be less than or equal to max if max is defined. A memory allocation may fail if it attempts to increase the used memory such that used > committed even if used <= max would still be true (for example, when the system is low on virtual memory).

    +----------------------------------------------+
    +////////////////           |                  +
    +////////////////           |                  +
    +----------------------------------------------+

    |--------|
       init
    |---------------|
           used
    |---------------------------|
              committed
    |----------------------------------------------|
                        max

As additional note, maxMemory is less than -Xmx because there is necessity at least in one empty survival space, which can't be used for heap allocation.

also it is worth to to take a look at here and especially here

API Gateway CORS: no 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header

For Googlers:

Here is why:

  • Simple request, or, GET/POST with no cookies do not trigger preflight
  • When you configure CORS for a path, API Gateway will only create an OPTIONS method for that path, then send Allow-Origin headers using mock responses when user calls OPTIONS, but GET / POST will not get Allow-Origin automatically
  • If you try to send simple requests with CORS mode on, you will get an error because that response has no Allow-Origin header
  • You may adhere to best practice, simple requests are not meant to send response to user, send authentication/cookie along with your requests to make it "not simple" and preflight will trigger
  • Still, you will have to send CORS headers by yourself for the request following OPTIONS

To sum it up:

  • Only harmless OPTIONS will be generated by API Gateway automatically
  • OPTIONS are only used by browser as a precautious measure to check possibility of CORS on a path
  • Whether CORS is accepted depend on the actual method e.g. GET / POST
  • You have to manually send appropriate headers in your response

Keep CMD open after BAT file executes

Depending on how you are running the command, you can put /k after cmd to keep the window open.

cmd /k my_script.bat

Simply adding cmd /k to the end of your batch file will work too. Credit to Luigi D'Amico who posted about this in the comments below.

How to make layout with rounded corners..?

With the Material Components Library you can use the MaterialShapeDrawable to draw custom shapes.

Just put the LinearLayout in your xml layout:

<LinearLayout
    android:id="@+id/linear_rounded"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    ..>

    <!-- content ..... -->

</LinearLayout>

Then in your code you can apply a ShapeAppearanceModel. Something like:

float radius = getResources().getDimension(R.dimen.default_corner_radius);

LinearLayout linearLayout= findViewById(R.id.linear_rounded);
ShapeAppearanceModel shapeAppearanceModel = new ShapeAppearanceModel()
    .toBuilder()
    .setAllCorners(CornerFamily.ROUNDED,radius)
    .build();

MaterialShapeDrawable shapeDrawable = new MaterialShapeDrawable(shapeAppearanceModel);
//Fill the LinearLayout with your color
shapeDrawable.setFillColor(ContextCompat.getColorStateList(this,R.color.secondaryLightColor));

ViewCompat.setBackground(linearLayout,shapeDrawable);

enter image description here

Note:: it requires the version 1.1.0 of the material components library.

Software Design vs. Software Architecture

  1. Architecture means the conceptual structure and logical organization of a computer or computer-based system.

    Design means a plan or drawing produced to show the look and function or workings of a system or an object before it is made.

  2. If you are “architecting” a component, you are defining how it behaves in the larger system.

    If you are “designing” the same component, you are defining how it behaves internally.

All architecture is design but NOT all design is architecture.

What part is the Design, the How is the concrete implementation and the intersection of What and How is Architecture.

Image for differentiating Architecture and Design:

Design vs Architecture

There are also design decisions, that are not architecturally significant, i.e. does not belongs to the architecture branch of design. For example, some component’s internal design decisions, like- choice of algorithm, selection of data structure etc.

Any design decision, which isn’t visible outside of its component boundary is a component’s internal design and is non-architectural. These are the design decisions a system architect would leave on module designer’s discretion or the implementation team as long as their design don’t break the architectural constraints imposed by the system level architecture.

Float to String format specifier

Firstly, as Etienne says, float in C# is Single. It is just the C# keyword for that data type.

So you can definitely do this:

float f = 13.5f;
string s = f.ToString("R");

Secondly, you have referred a couple of times to the number's "format"; numbers don't have formats, they only have values. Strings have formats. Which makes me wonder: what is this thing you have that has a format but is not a string? The closest thing I can think of would be decimal, which does maintain its own precision; however, calling simply decimal.ToString should have the effect you want in that case.

How about including some example code so we can see exactly what you're doing, and why it isn't achieving what you want?

How to include view/partial specific styling in AngularJS

If you only need your CSS to be applied to one specific view, I'm using this handy snippet inside my controller:

$("body").addClass("mystate");

$scope.$on("$destroy", function() {
  $("body").removeClass("mystate");
});

This will add a class to my body tag when the state loads, and remove it when the state is destroyed (i.e. someone changes pages). This solves my related problem of only needing CSS to be applied to one state in my application.

downloading all the files in a directory with cURL

OK, considering that you are using Windows, the most simple way to do that is to use the standard ftp tool bundled with it. I base the following solution on Windows XP, hoping it'll work as well (or with minor modifications) on other versions.

First of all, you need to create a batch (script) file for the ftp program, containing instructions for it. Name it as you want, and put into it:

curl -u login:pass ftp.myftpsite.com/iiumlabs* -O

open ftp.myftpsite.com
login
pass
mget *
quit

The first line opens a connection to the ftp server at ftp.myftpsite.com. The two following lines specify the login, and the password which ftp will ask for (replace login and pass with just the login and password, without any keywords). Then, you use mget * to get all files. Instead of the *, you can use any wildcard. Finally, you use quit to close the ftp program without interactive prompt.

If you needed to enter some directory first, add a cd command before mget. It should be pretty straightforward.

Finally, write that file and run ftp like this:

ftp -i -s:yourscript

where -i disables interactivity (asking before downloading files), and -s specifies path to the script you created.

Sadly, file transfer over SSH is not natively supported in Windows. But for that case, you'd probably want to use PuTTy tools anyway. The one of particular interest for this case would be pscp which is practically the PuTTy counter-part of the openssh scp command.

The syntax is similar to copy command, and it supports wildcards:

pscp -batch [email protected]:iiumlabs* .

If you authenticate using a key file, you should pass it using -i path-to-key-file. If you use password, -pw pass. It can also reuse sessions saved using PuTTy, using the load -load your-session-name argument.

The packages need to be in a specific format for pip to understand, which is

feedparser==5.1.3
wsgiref==0.1.2
django==1.4.2
...

That is the "requirements format".

Here, django==1.4.2 implies install django version 1.4.2 (even though the latest is 1.6.x). If you do not specify ==1.4.2, the latest version available would be installed.

You can read more in "Virtualenv and pip Basics", and the official "Requirements File Format" documentation.

How to bind RadioButtons to an enum?

I would use the RadioButtons in a ListBox, and then bind to the SelectedValue.

This is an older thread about this topic, but the base idea should be the same: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/wpf/thread/323d067a-efef-4c9f-8d99-fecf45522395/

How does the vim "write with sudo" trick work?

:w - Write a file.

!sudo - Call shell sudo command.

tee - The output of write (vim :w) command redirected using tee. The % is nothing but current file name i.e. /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki.conf. In other words tee command is run as root and it takes standard input and write it to a file represented by %. However, this will prompt to reload file again (hit L to load changes in vim itself):

How to sum a variable by group

You can also use the by() function:

x2 <- by(x$Frequency, x$Category, sum)
do.call(rbind,as.list(x2))

Those other packages (plyr, reshape) have the benefit of returning a data.frame, but it's worth being familiar with by() since it's a base function.

AcquireConnection method call to the connection manager <Excel Connection Manager> failed with error code 0xC0202009

In my case the problem was the 32/64 bit driver which I solved by configuring the properties of the sql server job:

C# Select elements in list as List of string

List<string> empnames = (from e in emplist select e.Enaame).ToList();

Or

string[] empnames = (from e in emplist select e.Enaame).ToArray();

Etc...

how do I get a new line, after using float:left?

You need to "clear" the float after every 6 images. So with your current code, change the styles for containerdivNewLine to:

.containerdivNewLine { clear: both; float: left; display: block; position: relative; }

Counting Chars in EditText Changed Listener

This is a slightly more general answer with more explanation for future viewers.

Add a text changed listener

If you want to find the text length or do something else after the text has been changed, you can add a text changed listener to your edit text.

EditText editText = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.testEditText);
editText.addTextChangedListener(new TextWatcher() {

    @Override
    public void beforeTextChanged(CharSequence charSequence, int start, int count, int after) {

    }

    @Override
    public void onTextChanged(CharSequence charSequence, int start, int before, int count)  {

    }

    @Override
    public void afterTextChanged(Editable editable) {

    }
});

The listener needs a TextWatcher, which requires three methods to be overridden: beforeTextChanged, onTextChanged, and afterTextChanged.

Counting the characters

You can get the character count in onTextChanged or beforeTextChanged with

charSequence.length()

or in afterTextChanged with

editable.length()

Meaning of the methods

The parameters are a little confusing so here is a little extra explanation.

beforeTextChanged

beforeTextChanged(CharSequence charSequence, int start, int count, int after)

  • charSequence: This is the text content before the pending change is made. You should not try to change it.
  • start: This is the index of where the new text will be inserted. If a range is selected, then it is the beginning index of the range.
  • count: This is the length of selected text that is going to be replaced. If nothing is selected then count will be 0.
  • after: this is the length of the text to be inserted.

onTextChanged

onTextChanged(CharSequence charSequence, int start, int before, int count)

  • charSequence: This is the text content after the change was made. You should not try to modify this value here. Modify the editable in afterTextChanged if you need to.
  • start: This is the index of the start of where the new text was inserted.
  • before: This is the old value. It is the length of previously selected text that was replaced. This is the same value as count in beforeTextChanged.
  • count: This is the length of text that was inserted. This is the same value as after in beforeTextChanged.

afterTextChanged

afterTextChanged(Editable editable)

Like onTextChanged, this is called after the change has already been made. However, now the text may be modified.

  • editable: This is the editable text of the EditText. If you change it, though, you have to be careful not to get into an infinite loop. See the documentation for more details.

How to update multiple columns in single update statement in DB2

This is an "old school solution", when MERGE command does not work (I think before version 10).

UPDATE TARGET_TABLE T
SET (T.VAL1, T.VAL2 ) =
(SELECT S.VAL1, S.VAL2
 FROM SOURCE_TABLE S
 WHERE T.KEY1 = S.KEY1 AND T.KEY2 = S.KEY2)
WHERE EXISTS
(SELECT 1
 FROM SOURCE_TABLE S
 WHERE T.KEY1 = S.KEY1 AND T.KEY2 = S.KEY2
   AND (T.VAL1 <> S.VAL1 OR T.VAL2 <> S.VAL2));

No shadow by default on Toolbar?

If you are seting the ToolBar as ActionBar then just call:

getSupportActionBar().setElevation(YOUR_ELEVATION);

Note: This must be called after setSupportActionBar(toolbar);
