Easy way to dismiss keyboard?

To dismiss a keyboard after the keyboard has popped up, there are 2 cases,

  1. when the UITextField is inside a UIScrollView

  2. when the UITextField is outside a UIScrollView

2.when the UITextField is outside a UIScrollView override the method in your UIViewController subclass

you must also add delegate for all UITextView

- (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event {
    [self.view endEditing:YES];
}
  1. In a scroll view, Tapping outside will not fire any event, so in that case use a Tap Gesture Recognizer, Drag and drop a UITapGesture for the scroll view and create an IBAction for it.

to create a IBAction, press ctrl+ click the UITapGesture and drag it to the .h file of viewcontroller.

Here I have named tappedEvent as my action name

- (IBAction)tappedEvent:(id)sender {
      [self.view endEditing:YES];  }

C#: Limit the length of a string?

You could extend the "string" class to let you return a limited string.

using System;

namespace ConsoleApplication1
{
   class Program
   {
      static void Main(string[] args)
      {
         // since specified strings are treated on the fly as string objects...
         string limit5 = "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.".LimitLength(5);
         string limit10 = "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.".LimitLength(10);
         // this line should return us the entire contents of the test string
         string limit100 = "The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.".LimitLength(100);

         Console.WriteLine("limit5   - {0}", limit5);
         Console.WriteLine("limit10  - {0}", limit10);
         Console.WriteLine("limit100 - {0}", limit100);

         Console.ReadLine();
      }
   }

   public static class StringExtensions
   {
      /// <summary>
      /// Method that limits the length of text to a defined length.
      /// </summary>
      /// <param name="source">The source text.</param>
      /// <param name="maxLength">The maximum limit of the string to return.</param>
      public static string LimitLength(this string source, int maxLength)
      {
         if (source.Length <= maxLength)
         {
            return source;
         }

         return source.Substring(0, maxLength);
      }
   }
}

Result:

limit5 - The q
limit10 - The quick
limit100 - The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog.

How to use a Bootstrap 3 glyphicon in an html select

I don't think the standard HTML select will display HTML content. I'd suggest checking out Bootstrap select: http://silviomoreto.github.io/bootstrap-select/

It has several options for displaying icons or other HTML markup in the select.

<select id="mySelect" data-show-icon="true">

  <option data-subtext="<i class='glyphicon glyphicon-eye-open'></i>"></option>
  <option data-subtext="<i class='glyphicon glyphicon-heart-empty'></i>"></option>
  <option data-subtext="<i class='glyphicon glyphicon-leaf'></i>"></option>
  <option data-subtext="<i class='glyphicon glyphicon-music'></i>"></option>
  <option data-subtext="<i class='glyphicon glyphicon-send'></i>"></option>

Jackson: how to prevent field serialization

Jackson has a class named SimpleBeanPropertyFilter that helps to filter fields during serialization and deserialization; not globally. I think that's what you wanted.

@JsonFilter("custom_serializer")
class User {
    private String password;

    //setter, getter..
}

Then in your code:

String[] fieldsToSkip = new String[] { "password" };

ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();

final SimpleFilterProvider filter = new SimpleFilterProvider();
filter.addFilter("custom_serializer",
            SimpleBeanPropertyFilter.serializeAllExcept(fieldsToSkip));

mapper.setFilters(filter);

String jsonStr = mapper.writeValueAsString(currentUser);

This will prevent password field to get serialized. Also you will be able to deserialize password fields as it is. Just make sure no filters are applied on the ObjectMapper object.

ObjectMapper mapper = new ObjectMapper();
User user = mapper.readValue(yourJsonStr, User.class); // user object does have non-null password field

Inline CSS styles in React: how to implement a:hover?

I think onMouseEnter and onMouseLeave are the ways to go, but I don't see the need for an additional wrapper component. Here is how I implemented it:

var Link = React.createClass({
  getInitialState: function(){
    return {hover: false}
  },
  toggleHover: function(){
    this.setState({hover: !this.state.hover})
  },
  render: function() {
    var linkStyle;
    if (this.state.hover) {
      linkStyle = {backgroundColor: 'red'}
    } else {
      linkStyle = {backgroundColor: 'blue'}
    }
    return(
      <div>
        <a style={linkStyle} onMouseEnter={this.toggleHover} onMouseLeave={this.toggleHover}>Link</a>
      </div>
    )
}

You can then use the state of hover (true/false) to change the style of the link.

How to get evaluated attributes inside a custom directive

Notice: I do update this answer as I find better solutions. I also keep the old answers for future reference as long as they remain related. Latest and best answer comes first.

Better answer:

Directives in angularjs are very powerful, but it takes time to comprehend which processes lie behind them.

While creating directives, angularjs allows you to create an isolated scope with some bindings to the parent scope. These bindings are specified by the attribute you attach the element in DOM and how you define scope property in the directive definition object.

There are 3 types of binding options which you can define in scope and you write those as prefixes related attribute.

angular.module("myApp", []).directive("myDirective", function () {
    return {
        restrict: "A",
        scope: {
            text: "@myText",
            twoWayBind: "=myTwoWayBind",
            oneWayBind: "&myOneWayBind"
        }
    };
}).controller("myController", function ($scope) {
    $scope.foo = {name: "Umur"};
    $scope.bar = "qwe";
});

HTML

<div ng-controller="myController">
    <div my-directive my-text="hello {{ bar }}" my-two-way-bind="foo" my-one-way-bind="bar">
    </div>
</div>

In that case, in the scope of directive (whether it's in linking function or controller), we can access these properties like this:

/* Directive scope */

in: $scope.text
out: "hello qwe"
// this would automatically update the changes of value in digest
// this is always string as dom attributes values are always strings

in: $scope.twoWayBind
out: {name:"Umur"}
// this would automatically update the changes of value in digest
// changes in this will be reflected in parent scope

// in directive's scope
in: $scope.twoWayBind.name = "John"

//in parent scope
in: $scope.foo.name
out: "John"

in: $scope.oneWayBind() // notice the function call, this binding is read only
out: "qwe"
// any changes here will not reflect in parent, as this only a getter .

"Still OK" Answer:

Since this answer got accepted, but has some issues, I'm going to update it to a better one. Apparently, $parse is a service which does not lie in properties of the current scope, which means it only takes angular expressions and cannot reach scope. {{,}} expressions are compiled while angularjs initiating which means when we try to access them in our directives postlink method, they are already compiled. ({{1+1}} is 2 in directive already).

This is how you would want to use:

var myApp = angular.module('myApp',[]);

myApp.directive('myDirective', function ($parse) {
    return function (scope, element, attr) {
        element.val("value=" + $parse(attr.myDirective)(scope));
    };
});

function MyCtrl($scope) {
    $scope.aaa = 3432;
}?

.

<div ng-controller="MyCtrl">
    <input my-directive="123">
    <input my-directive="1+1">
    <input my-directive="'1+1'">
    <input my-directive="aaa">
</div>????????

One thing you should notice here is that, if you want set the value string, you should wrap it in quotes. (See 3rd input)

Here is the fiddle to play with: http://jsfiddle.net/neuTA/6/

Old Answer:

I'm not removing this for folks who can be misled like me, note that using $eval is perfectly fine the correct way to do it, but $parse has a different behavior, you probably won't need this to use in most of the cases.

The way to do it is, once again, using scope.$eval. Not only it compiles the angular expression, it has also access to the current scope's properties.

var myApp = angular.module('myApp',[]);

myApp.directive('myDirective', function () {
    return function (scope, element, attr) {
        element.val("value = "+ scope.$eval(attr.value));
    }
});

function MyCtrl($scope) {

}?

What you are missing was $eval.

http://docs.angularjs.org/api/ng.$rootScope.Scope#$eval

Executes the expression on the current scope returning the result. Any exceptions in the expression are propagated (uncaught). This is useful when evaluating angular expressions.

Git clone without .git directory

Alternatively, if you have Node.js installed, you can use the following command:

npx degit GIT_REPO

npx comes with Node, and it allows you to run binary node-based packages without installing them first (alternatively, you can first install degit globally using npm i -g degit).

Degit is a tool created by Rich Harris, the creator of Svelte and Rollup, which he uses to quickly create a new project by cloning a repository without keeping the git folder. But it can also be used to clone any repo once...

How to change the default encoding to UTF-8 for Apache?

See AddDefaultCharset Directive, AddCharset Directive, and this article.

AddDefaultCharset utf-8

But I have to use Chinese characters now and then. Previously, I translated Chinese characters to Unicode code and include it in the document using the &# hack. But it is only useful for page having a few characters.

There is a better way to do that: encode the charset information in the filename, and apache will output the proper encoding header based on that. This is possible thanks to the AddCharset lines in the conf file, such as the line below:

conf/httpd.conf:

AddCharset UTF-8 .utf8

So if you have a file whose names ends in .html.utf8, apache will serve the page as if it is encoded in UTF-8 and will dump the proper character-encoding directive in the header accordingly.

Exclude Blank and NA in R

A good idea is to set all of the "" (blank cells) to NA before any further analysis.

If you are reading your input from a file, it is a good choice to cast all "" to NAs:

foo <- read.table(file="Your_file.txt", na.strings=c("", "NA"), sep="\t") # if your file is tab delimited

If you have already your table loaded, you can act as follows:

foo[foo==""] <- NA

Then to keep only rows with no NA you may just use na.omit():

foo <- na.omit(foo)

Or to keep columns with no NA:

foo <- foo[, colSums(is.na(foo)) == 0]

How to remove specific value from array using jQuery

You can use underscore.js. It really makes things simple.

It reduces the code that you write.

How to plot a function curve in R

I did some searching on the web, and this are some ways that I found:

The easiest way is using curve without predefined function

curve(x^2, from=1, to=50, , xlab="x", ylab="y")

enter image description here

You can also use curve when you have a predfined function

eq = function(x){x*x}
curve(eq, from=1, to=50, xlab="x", ylab="y")

enter image description here

If you want to use ggplot,

library("ggplot2")
eq = function(x){x*x}
ggplot(data.frame(x=c(1, 50)), aes(x=x)) +
  stat_function(fun=eq)

How to use MySQL dump from a remote machine

Have you got access to SSH?

You can use this command in shell to backup an entire database:

mysqldump -u [username] -p[password] [databasename] > [filename.sql]

This is actually one command followed by the > operator, which says, "take the output of the previous command and store it in this file."

Note: The lack of a space between -p and the mysql password is not a typo. However, if you leave the -p flag present, but the actual password blank then you will be prompted for your password. Sometimes this is recommended to keep passwords out of your bash history.

Android Camera : data intent returns null

When we capture the image from Camera in Android then Uri or data.getdata() becomes null. We have two solutions to resolve this issue.

  1. Retrieve the Uri path from the Bitmap Image
  2. Retrieve the Uri path from cursor.

This is how to retrieve the Uri from the Bitmap Image. First capture image through Intent that will be the same for both methods:

// Capture Image
captureImg.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
    @Override
    public void onClick(View view) {
        Intent intent = new Intent(MediaStore.ACTION_IMAGE_CAPTURE);
        if (intent.resolveActivity(getPackageManager()) != null) {
            startActivityForResult(intent, reqcode);
        }
    }
});

Now implement OnActivityResult, which will be the same for both methods:

@Override
protected void onActivityResult(int requestCode, int resultCode, Intent data) {
    super.onActivityResult(requestCode, resultCode, data);

    if(requestCode==reqcode && resultCode==RESULT_OK)
    {
        Bitmap photo = (Bitmap) data.getExtras().get("data");
        ImageView.setImageBitmap(photo);

        // CALL THIS METHOD TO GET THE URI FROM THE BITMAP
        Uri tempUri = getImageUri(getApplicationContext(), photo);

        // Show Uri path based on Image
        Toast.makeText(LiveImage.this,"Here "+ tempUri, Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

        // Show Uri path based on Cursor Content Resolver
        Toast.makeText(this, "Real path for URI : "+getRealPathFromURI(tempUri), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
    }
    else
    {
        Toast.makeText(this, "Failed To Capture Image", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
    }
}

Now create all above methods to create the Uri from Image and Cursor methods:

Uri path from Bitmap Image:

private Uri getImageUri(Context applicationContext, Bitmap photo) {
    ByteArrayOutputStream bytes = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
    photo.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.JPEG, 100, bytes);
    String path = MediaStore.Images.Media.insertImage(LiveImage.this.getContentResolver(), photo, "Title", null);
    return Uri.parse(path);
}

Uri from Real path of saved image:

public String getRealPathFromURI(Uri uri) {
    Cursor cursor = getContentResolver().query(uri, null, null, null, null);
    cursor.moveToFirst();
    int idx = cursor.getColumnIndex(MediaStore.Images.ImageColumns.DATA);
    return cursor.getString(idx);
}

How do I run Python script using arguments in windows command line

To execute your program from the command line, you have to call the python interpreter, like this :

C:\Python27>python hello.py 1 1

If you code resides in another directory, you will have to set the python binary path in your PATH environment variable, to be able to run it, too. You can find detailed instructions here.

What exactly does stringstream do?

Sometimes it is very convenient to use stringstream to convert between strings and other numerical types. The usage of stringstream is similar to the usage of iostream, so it is not a burden to learn.

Stringstreams can be used to both read strings and write data into strings. It mainly functions with a string buffer, but without a real I/O channel.

The basic member functions of stringstream class are

  • str(), which returns the contents of its buffer in string type.

  • str(string), which set the contents of the buffer to the string argument.

Here is an example of how to use string streams.

ostringstream os;
os << "dec: " << 15 << " hex: " << std::hex << 15 << endl;
cout << os.str() << endl;

The result is dec: 15 hex: f.

istringstream is of more or less the same usage.

To summarize, stringstream is a convenient way to manipulate strings like an independent I/O device.

FYI, the inheritance relationships between the classes are:

Entity framework self referencing loop detected

Well the correct answer for the default Json formater based on Json.net is to set ReferenceLoopHandling to Ignore.

Just add this to the Application_Start in Global.asax:

HttpConfiguration config = GlobalConfiguration.Configuration;

config.Formatters.JsonFormatter
            .SerializerSettings
            .ReferenceLoopHandling = Newtonsoft.Json.ReferenceLoopHandling.Ignore;

This is the correct way. It will ignore the reference pointing back to the object.

Other responses focused in changing the list being returned by excluding data or by making a facade object and sometimes that is not an option.

Using the JsonIgnore attribute to restrict the references can be time consuming and if you want to serialize the tree starting from another point that will be a problem.

RegEx to make sure that the string contains at least one lower case char, upper case char, digit and symbol

Bart Kiers, your regex has a couple issues. The best way to do that is this:

(.*[A-Z].*)       // For upper cases
(.*\d.*)          // For digits

What is an efficient way to implement a singleton pattern in Java?

Have a look at this post.

Examples of GoF Design Patterns in Java's core libraries

From the best answer's "Singleton" section,

Singleton (recognizeable by creational methods returning the same instance (usually of itself) everytime)

  • java.lang.Runtime#getRuntime()
  • java.awt.Desktop#getDesktop()
  • java.lang.System#getSecurityManager()

You can also learn the example of Singleton from Java native classes themselves.

The type java.util.Map$Entry cannot be resolved. It is indirectly referenced from required .class files

I've seen occasional problems with Eclipse forgetting that built-in classes (including Object and String) exist. The way I've resolved them is to:

  • On the Project menu, turn off "Build Automatically"
  • Quit and restart Eclipse
  • On the Project menu, choose "Clean…" and clean all projects
  • Turn "Build Automatically" back on and let it rebuild everything.

This seems to make Eclipse forget whatever incorrect cached information it had about the available classes.

How to get the last N rows of a pandas DataFrame?

This is because of using integer indices (ix selects those by label over -3 rather than position, and this is by design: see integer indexing in pandas "gotchas"*).

*In newer versions of pandas prefer loc or iloc to remove the ambiguity of ix as position or label:

Function to get yesterday's date in Javascript in format DD/MM/YYYY

The problem here seems to be that you're reassigning $today by assigning a string to it:

$today = $dd+'/'+$mm+'/'+$yyyy;

Strings don't have getDate.

Also, $today.getDate()-1 just gives you the day of the month minus one; it doesn't give you the full date of 'yesterday'. Try this:

$today = new Date();
$yesterday = new Date($today);
$yesterday.setDate($today.getDate() - 1); //setDate also supports negative values, which cause the month to rollover.

Then just apply the formatting code you wrote:

var $dd = $yesterday.getDate();
var $mm = $yesterday.getMonth()+1; //January is 0!

var $yyyy = $yesterday.getFullYear();
if($dd<10){$dd='0'+$dd} if($mm<10){$mm='0'+$mm} $yesterday = $dd+'/'+$mm+'/'+$yyyy;

Because of the last statement, $yesterday is now a String (not a Date) containing the formatted date.

How to properly import a selfsigned certificate into Java keystore that is available to all Java applications by default?

If you are using a certificate signed by a Certificate Authority that is not included in the Java cacerts file by default, you need to complete the following configuration for HTTPS connections. To import certificates into cacerts:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the cacerts file, which is located in the jre\lib\security subfolder where AX Core Client is installed. The default location is C:\Program Files\ACL Software\AX Core Client\jre\lib\security
  2. Create a backup copy of the file before making any changes.
  3. Depending on the certificates you receive from the Certificate Authority you are using, you may need to import an intermediate certificate and/or root certificate into the cacerts file. Use the following syntax to import certificates: keytool -import -alias -keystore -trustcacerts -file
  4. If you are importing both certificates the alias specified for each certificate should be unique.
  5. Type the password for the keystore at the “Password” prompt and press Enter. The default Java password for the cacerts file is “changeit”. Type ‘y’ at the “Trust this certificate?” prompt and press Enter.

How do I make a file:// hyperlink that works in both IE and Firefox?

In case someone else finds this topic while using localhost in the file URIs - Internet Explorer acts completely different if the host name is localhost or 127.0.0.1 - if you use the actual hostname, it works fine (from trusted sites/intranet zone).

Another big difference between IE and FF - IE is fine with uris like file://server/share/file.txt but FF requires additional slashes file:////server/share/file.txt.

Running Git through Cygwin from Windows

Isn't this as simple as adding your git install to your Windows path?

E.g. Win+R rundll32.exe sysdm.cpl,EditEnvironmentVariables Edit...PATH appending your Mysysgit install path e.g. ;C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin. Re-run Cygwin and voila. As Cygwin automatically loads in the Windows environment, so too will your native install of Git.

Retrieve list of tasks in a queue in Celery

If you control the code of the tasks then you can work around the problem by letting a task trigger a trivial retry the first time it executes, then checking inspect().reserved(). The retry registers the task with the result backend, and celery can see that. The task must accept self or context as first parameter so we can access the retry count.

@task(bind=True)
def mytask(self):
    if self.request.retries == 0:
        raise self.retry(exc=MyTrivialError(), countdown=1)
    ...

This solution is broker agnostic, ie. you don't have to worry about whether you are using RabbitMQ or Redis to store the tasks.

EDIT: after testing I've found this to be only a partial solution. The size of reserved is limited to the prefetch setting for the worker.

Python 3 turn range to a list

In fact, this is a retro-gradation of Python3 as compared to Python2. Certainly, Python2 which uses range() and xrange() is more convenient than Python3 which uses list(range()) and range() respectively. The reason is because the original designer of Python3 is not very experienced, they only considered the use of the range function by many beginners to iterate over a large number of elements where it is both memory and CPU inefficient; but they neglected the use of the range function to produce a number list. Now, it is too late for them to change back already.

If I was to be the designer of Python3, I will:

  1. use irange to return a sequence iterator
  2. use lrange to return a sequence list
  3. use range to return either a sequence iterator (if the number of elements is large, e.g., range(9999999) or a sequence list (if the number of elements is small, e.g., range(10))

That should be optimal.

Using Python, how can I access a shared folder on windows network?

How did you try it? Maybe you are working with \ and omit proper escaping.

Instead of

open('\\HOST\share\path\to\file')

use either Johnsyweb's solution with the /s, or try one of

open(r'\\HOST\share\path\to\file')

or

open('\\\\HOST\\share\\path\\to\\file')

.

Eclipse will not start and I haven't changed anything

Read my answer if recently you have been using a VPN connection.

Today I had the same exact issue and learned how to fix it without removing any plugins. So I thought maybe I would share my own experience.

My issue definitely had something to do with Spring Framework

I was using a VPN connection over my internet connection. Once I disconnected my VPN, everything instantly turned right.

How to redirect Valgrind's output to a file?

By default, Valgrind writes its output to stderr. So you need to do something like:

valgrind a.out > log.txt 2>&1

Alternatively, you can tell Valgrind to write somewhere else; see http://valgrind.org/docs/manual/manual-core.html#manual-core.comment (but I've never tried this).

Android Spinner: Get the selected item change event

By default, you will get the first item of the spinner array through

value = spinner.getSelectedItem().toString();

whenever you selected the value in the spinner this will give you the selected value

if you want the position of the selected item then do it like that

pos = spinner.getSelectedItemPosition();

the above two answers are for without applying listener

How to write a multiline command?

CORS - How do 'preflight' an httprequest?

Although this thread dates back to 2014, the issue can still be current to many of us. Here is how I dealt with it in a jQuery 1.12 /PHP 5.6 context:

  • jQuery sent its XHR request using only limited headers; only 'Origin' was sent.
  • No preflight request was needed.
  • The server only had to detect such a request, and add the "Access-Control-Allow-Origin: " . $_SERVER['HTTP_ORIGIN'] header, after detecting that this was a cross-origin XHR.

PHP Code sample:

if (!empty($_SERVER['HTTP_ORIGIN'])) {
    // Uh oh, this XHR comes from outer space...
    // Use this opportunity to filter out referers that shouldn't be allowed to see this request
    if (!preg_match('@\.partner\.domain\.net$@'))
        die("End of the road if you're not my business partner.");

    // otherwise oblige
    header("Access-Control-Allow-Origin: " . $_SERVER['HTTP_ORIGIN']);
}
else {
    // local request, no need to send a specific header for CORS
}

In particular, don't add an exit; as no preflight is needed.

How to clear variables in ipython?

Adding the following lines to a new script will clear all variables each time you rerun the script:

from IPython import get_ipython
get_ipython().magic('reset -sf')

To make life easy, you can add them to your default template.

In Spyder: Tools>Preferences>Editor>Edit template

HTTP Error 403.14 - Forbidden The Web server is configured to not list the contents

IUSR permissions use on a folder if not under inetpub/wwwroot will be solution for some.

Is it possible to move/rename files in Git and maintain their history?

While the core of Git, the Git plumbing doesn't keep track of renames, the history you display with the Git log "porcelain" can detect them if you like.

For a given git log use the -M option:

git log -p -M

With a current version of Git.

This works for other commands like git diff as well.

There are options to make the comparisons more or less rigorous. If you rename a file without making significant changes to the file at the same time it makes it easier for Git log and friends to detect the rename. For this reason some people rename files in one commit and change them in another.

There's a cost in CPU use whenever you ask Git to find where files have been renamed, so whether you use it or not, and when, is up to you.

If you would like to always have your history reported with rename detection in a particular repository you can use:

git config diff.renames 1

Files moving from one directory to another is detected. Here's an example:

commit c3ee8dfb01e357eba1ab18003be1490a46325992
Author: John S. Gruber <[email protected]>
Date:   Wed Feb 22 22:20:19 2017 -0500

    test rename again

diff --git a/yyy/power.py b/zzz/power.py
similarity index 100%
rename from yyy/power.py
rename to zzz/power.py

commit ae181377154eca800832087500c258a20c95d1c3
Author: John S. Gruber <[email protected]>
Date:   Wed Feb 22 22:19:17 2017 -0500

    rename test

diff --git a/power.py b/yyy/power.py
similarity index 100%
rename from power.py
rename to yyy/power.py

Please note that this works whenever you are using diff, not just with git log. For example:

$ git diff HEAD c3ee8df
diff --git a/power.py b/zzz/power.py
similarity index 100%
rename from power.py
rename to zzz/power.py

As a trial I made a small change in one file in a feature branch and committed it and then in the master branch I renamed the file, committed, and then made a small change in another part of the file and committed that. When I went to feature branch and merged from master the merge renamed the file and merged the changes. Here's the output from the merge:

 $ git merge -v master
 Auto-merging single
 Merge made by the 'recursive' strategy.
  one => single | 4 ++++
  1 file changed, 4 insertions(+)
  rename one => single (67%)

The result was a working directory with the file renamed and both text changes made. So it's possible for Git to do the right thing despite the fact that it doesn't explicitly track renames.

This is an late answer to an old question so the other answers may have been correct for the Git version at the time.

How does the ARM architecture differ from x86?

The ARM architecture was originally designed for Acorn personal computers (See Acorn Archimedes, circa 1987, and RiscPC), which were just as much keyboard-based personal computers as were x86 based IBM PC models. Only later ARM implementations were primarily targeted at the mobile and embedded market segment.

Originally, simple RISC CPUs of roughly equivalent performance could be designed by much smaller engineering teams (see Berkeley RISC) than those working on the x86 development at Intel.

But, nowadays, the fastest ARM chips have very complex multi-issue out-of-order instruction dispatch units designed by large engineering teams, and x86 cores may have something like a RISC core fed by an instruction translation unit.

So, any current differences between the two architectures are more related to the specific market needs of the product niches that the development teams are targeting. (Random opinion: ARM probably makes more in license fees from embedded applications that tend to be far more power and cost constrained. And Intel needs to maintain a performance edge in PCs and servers for their profit margins. Thus you see differing implementation optimizations.)

How to prevent buttons from submitting forms

The function removeItem actually contains an error, which makes the form button do it's default behaviour (submitting the form). The javascript error console will usually give a pointer in this case.

Check out the function removeItem in the javascript part:

The line:

rows[rows.length-1].html('');

doesn't work. Try this instead:

rows.eq(rows.length-1).html('');

Decreasing height of bootstrap 3.0 navbar

Working solution:

Bootstrap 3.0 by default has a 15px padding on top and bottom, so we just need to override it!

For example:

.navbar-nav > li > a {padding-top:10px !important; padding-bottom:10px !important;}
.navbar {min-height:40px !important}

how to toggle (hide/show) a table onClick of <a> tag in java script

You are always passing in true to the toggleMethod, so it will always "show" the table. I would create a global variable that you can flip inside the toggle method instead.

Alternatively you can check the visibility state of the table instead of an explicit variable

This code is probably not 100% right though. need to be adjusted

OOP vs Functional Programming vs Procedural

I think the available libraries, tools, examples, and communities completely trumps the paradigm these days. For example, ML (or whatever) might be the ultimate all-purpose programming language but if you can't get any good libraries for what you are doing you're screwed.

For example, if you're making a video game, there are more good code examples and SDKs in C++, so you're probably better off with that. For a small web application, there are some great Python, PHP, and Ruby frameworks that'll get you off and running very quickly. Java is a great choice for larger projects because of the compile-time checking and enterprise libraries and platforms.

It used to be the case that the standard libraries for different languages were pretty small and easily replicated - C, C++, Assembler, ML, LISP, etc.. came with the basics, but tended to chicken out when it came to standardizing on things like network communications, encryption, graphics, data file formats (including XML), even basic data structures like balanced trees and hashtables were left out!

Modern languages like Python, PHP, Ruby, and Java now come with a far more decent standard library and have many good third party libraries you can easily use, thanks in great part to their adoption of namespaces to keep libraries from colliding with one another, and garbage collection to standardize the memory management schemes of the libraries.

How to list active connections on PostgreSQL?

Oh, I just found that command on PostgreSQL forum:

SELECT * FROM pg_stat_activity;

Pure JavaScript: a function like jQuery's isNumeric()

isFinite(String(n)) returns true for n=0 or '0', '1.1' or 1.1,

but false for '1 dog' or '1,2,3,4', +- Infinity and any NaN values.

.NET Format a string with fixed spaces

Here's a VB.NET version I created, inspired by Joel Coehoorn's answer, Oliver's edit, and shaunmartin's comment:

    <Extension()>
Public Function PadCenter(ByVal [string] As String, ByVal width As Integer, ByVal c As Char) As String

    If [string] Is Nothing Then [string] = String.Empty
    If (width <= [string].Length) Then Return [string]

    Dim padding = width - [string].Length
    Return [string].PadLeft([string].Length + (padding \ 2), c).PadRight(width, c)

End Function

<Extension()>
Public Function PadCenter(ByVal [string] As String, ByVal width As Integer) As String

    If [string] Is Nothing Then [string] = String.Empty
    If (width <= [string].Length) Then Return [string]

    Dim padding = width - [string].Length
    Return [string].PadLeft([string].Length + (padding \ 2)).PadRight(width)

End Function

This is set up as a string extension, inside a Public Module (the way you do Extensions in VB.NET, a bit different than C#). My slight change is that it treats a null string as an empty string, and it pads an empty string with the width value (meets my particular needs). Hopefully this will convert easily to C# for anyone who needs it. If there's a better way to reference the answers, edits, and comments I mentioned above, which inspired my post, please let me know and I'll do it - I'm relatively new to posting, and I couldn't figure out to leave a comment (might not have enough rep yet).

What is a superfast way to read large files line-by-line in VBA?

I just wanted to share some of my results...

I have text files, which apparently came from a Linux system, so I only have a vbLF/Chr(10) at the end of each line and not vbCR/Chr(13).

Note 1:

  • This meant that the Line Input method would read in the entire file, instead of just one line at a time.

From my research testing small (152KB) & large (2778LB) files, both on and off the network I found the following:

Open FileName For Input: Line Input was the slowest (See Note 1 above)

Open FileName For Binary Access Read: Input was the fastest for reading the whole file

FSO.OpenTextFile: ReadLine was fast, but a bit slower then Binary Input

Note 2:

  • If I just needed to check the file header (first 1-2 lines) to check if I had the proper file/format, then FSO.OpenTextFile was the fastest, followed very closely by Binary Input.

  • The drawback with the Binary Input is that you have to know how many characters you want to read.

  • On normal files, Line Input would also be a good option as well, but I couldn't test due to Note 1.

Note 3:

  • Obviously, the files on the network showed the largest difference in read speed. They also showed the greatest benefit from reading the file a second time (although there are certainly memory buffers that come into play here).

denied: requested access to the resource is denied : docker

This answer is as much for my future self as for anyone else. I have encountered this exact problem when I am logged in correctly, but I am attempting to push to a private repo when my number of private repos is greater than or equal to the limit allowed by my plan.

I'm not exactly sure how I was able to create too many private repos, but if my plan includes 5 private repos, and somehow I have 6, then this is the error that I will receive:

Add Legend to Seaborn point plot

Old question, but there's an easier way.

sns.pointplot(x=x_col,y=y_col,data=df_1,color='blue')
sns.pointplot(x=x_col,y=y_col,data=df_2,color='green')
sns.pointplot(x=x_col,y=y_col,data=df_3,color='red')
plt.legend(labels=['legendEntry1', 'legendEntry2', 'legendEntry3'])

This lets you add the plots sequentially, and not have to worry about any of the matplotlib crap besides defining the legend items.

C# elegant way to check if a property's property is null

Assuming you have empty values of types one approach would be this:

I'm a big fan of C# but a very nice thing in new Java (1.7?) is the .? operator:

 var x = objectA.?PropertyOfB.?PropertyOfC.?PropertyOfString;

How to get root access on Android emulator?

If you have a virtual device with root access, this should do the job:

Ranges of floating point datatype in C?

A 32 bit floating point number has 23 + 1 bits of mantissa and an 8 bit exponent (-126 to 127 is used though) so the largest number you can represent is:

(2 ^ 23 + 2 ^ 23 + .... 1) * (2 ^ (127 - 23)) =

            System.out.println("Error!");
        }

    System.out.printf("%d/%d = %d", n1, n2, nQuotient);

Read the description of why this problem was caused in the link below. Look for the answer I posted for the detail in this thread. Java Homework user input issue

Ok, I will briefly describe it. When you read input using nextInt(), you just read the number part but the ENDLINE character was still on the stream. That was the main cause. Now look at the code above, all I did is read the whole line and parse it , it still throws the exception and work the way you were expecting it to work. Rest of your code works fine.

Convert List<String> to List<Integer> directly

If you're allowed to use lambdas from Java 8, you can use the following code sample.

final String text = "1:2:3:4:5";
final List<Integer> list = Arrays.asList(text.split(":")).stream()
  .map(s -> Integer.parseInt(s))
  .collect(Collectors.toList());
System.out.println(list);

No use of external libraries. Plain old new Java!

How to get index in Handlebars each helper?

Arrays:

{{#each array}}
    {{@index}}: {{this}}
{{/each}}

If you have arrays of objects... you can iterate through the children:

{{#each array}}
    //each this = { key: value, key: value, ...}
    {{#each this}}
        //each key=@key and value=this of child object
        {{@key}}: {{this}}
        //Or get index number of parent array looping
        {{@../index}}
    {{/each}}
{{/each}}

Objects:

{{#each object}}
    {{@key}}: {{this}}
{{/each}}

If you have nested objects you can access the key of parent object with {{@../key}}

When do I need a fb:app_id or fb:admins?

I think the documentation is reasonably helpful!

If you read it again, it says that adding open graph elements on your website will make your website act as a facebook page and you'll get the ability to publish updates to them etc.

So I think it's up to you - you can either just have a page with no OG elements, which is less work but also less 'rewarding' for you.

If you do use og, then set type to: blog

Finally: fb:admins or fb:app_id - A comma-separated list of either the Facebook IDs of page administrators or a Facebook Platform application ID. At a minimum, include only your own Facebook ID.

So just put your own fbid in there. As a tip, you can easily get this by looking at the url of your profile photo on facebook.

How store a range from excel into a Range variable?

When you use a Range object, you cannot simply use the following syntax:

Dim myRange as Range
myRange = Range("A1")

You must use the set keyword to assign Range objects:

Function getData(currentWorksheet As Worksheet, dataStartRow As Integer, dataEndRow As Integer, DataStartCol As Integer, dataEndCol As Integer)

    Dim dataTable As Range
    Set dataTable = currentWorksheet.Range(currentWorksheet.Cells(dataStartRow, DataStartCol), currentWorksheet.Cells(dataEndRow, dataEndCol))

    Set getData = dataTable

End Function

Sub main()
    Dim test As Range

    Set test = getData(ActiveSheet, 1, 3, 2, 5)
    test.select

End Sub

Note that every time a range is declared I use the Set keyword.

You can also allow your getData function to return a Range object instead of a Variant although this is unrelated to the problem you are having.

How do I pass an object to HttpClient.PostAsync and serialize as a JSON body?

A simple solution is to use Microsoft ASP.NET Web API 2.2 Client from NuGet.

Then you can simply do this and it'll serialize the object to JSON and set the Content-Type header to application/json; charset=utf-8:

var data = new
{
    name = "Foo",
    category = "article"
};

var client = new HttpClient();
client.BaseAddress = new Uri(baseUri);
client.DefaultRequestHeaders.Add("token", token);
var response = await client.PostAsJsonAsync("", data);

How can I access and process nested objects, arrays or JSON?

The Underscore js Way

Which is a JavaScript library that provides a whole mess of useful functional programming helpers without extending any built-in objects.

Solution:

var data = {
  code: 42,
  items: [{
    id: 1,
    name: 'foo'
  }, {
    id: 2,
    name: 'bar'
  }]
};

var item = _.findWhere(data.items, {
  id: 2
});
if (!_.isUndefined(item)) {
  console.log('NAME =>', item.name);
}

//using find -

var item = _.find(data.items, function(item) {
  return item.id === 2;
});

if (!_.isUndefined(item)) {
  console.log('NAME =>', item.name);
}

Differences between utf8 and latin1

UTF-8 is prepared for world domination, Latin1 isn't.

If you're trying to store non-Latin characters like Chinese, Japanese, Hebrew, Russian, etc using Latin1 encoding, then they will end up as mojibake. You may find the introductory text of this article useful (and even more if you know a bit Java).

Note that full 4-byte UTF-8 support was only introduced in MySQL 5.5. Before that version, it only goes up to 3 bytes per character, not 4 bytes per character. So, it supported only the BMP plane and not e.g. the Emoji plane. If you want full 4-byte UTF-8 support, upgrade MySQL to at least 5.5 or go for another RDBMS like PostgreSQL. In MySQL 5.5+ it's called utf8mb4.

SSL InsecurePlatform error when using Requests package

This answer is unrelated, but if you wanted to get rid of warning and get following warning from requests:

InsecurePlatformWarning /usr/local/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/requests/packages/urllib3/util/ssl_.py:79: InsecurePlatformWarning: A true SSLContext object is not available. This prevents urllib3 from configuring SSL appropriately and may cause certain SSL connections to fail. For more information, see https://urllib3.readthedocs.org/en/latest/security.html#insecureplatformwarning.

You can disable it by adding the following line to your python code:

requests.packages.urllib3.disable_warnings()

get string value from HashMap depending on key name

This is another example of how to use keySet(), get(), values() and entrySet() functions to obtain Keys and Values in a Map:

        Map<Integer, String> testKeyset = new HashMap<Integer, String>();

        testKeyset.put(1, "first");
        testKeyset.put(2, "second");
        testKeyset.put(3, "third");
        testKeyset.put(4, "fourth");

        // Print a single value relevant to a specified Key. (uses keySet())
        for(int mapKey: testKeyset.keySet())
            System.out.println(testKeyset.get(mapKey));

        // Print all values regardless of the key.
        for(String mapVal: testKeyset.values())
            System.out.println(mapVal.trim());

        // Displays the Map in Key-Value pairs (e.g: [1=first, 2=second, 3=third, 4=fourth])
        System.out.println(testKeyset.entrySet());

Return None if Dictionary key is not available

You should use the get() method from the dict class

d = {}
r = d.get('missing_key', None)

This will result in r == None. If the key isn't found in the dictionary, the get function returns the second argument.

How to ignore conflicts in rpm installs

The --force option will reinstall already installed packages or overwrite already installed files from other packages. You don't want this normally.

If you tell rpm to install all RPMs from some directory, then it does exactly this. rpm will not ignore RPMs listed for installation. You must manually remove the unneeded RPMs from the list (or directory). It will always overwrite the files with the "latest RPM installed" whichever order you do it in.

You can remove the old RPM and rpm will resolve the dependency with the newer version of the installed RPM. But this will only work, if none of the to be installed RPMs depends exactly on the old version.

If you really need different versions of the same RPM, then the RPM must be relocatable. You can then tell rpm to install the specific RPM to a different directory. If the files are not conflicting, then you can just install different versions with rpm -i (zypper in can not install different versions of the same RPM). I am packaging for example ruby gems as relocatable RPMs at work. So I can have different versions of the same gem installed.

I don't know on which files your RPMs are conflicting, but if all of them are "just" man pages, then you probably can simply overwrite the new ones with the old ones with rpm -i --replacefiles. The only problem with this would be, that it could confuse somebody who is reading the old man page and thinks it is for the actual version. Another problem would be the rpm --verify command. It will complain for the new package if the old one has overwritten some files.

Is this possibly a duplicate of https://serverfault.com/questions/522525/rpm-ignore-conflicts?

const char* concatenation

One more example:

// calculate the required buffer size (also accounting for the null terminator):
int bufferSize = strlen(one) + strlen(two) + 1;

// allocate enough memory for the concatenated string:
char* concatString = new char[ bufferSize ];

// copy strings one and two over to the new buffer:
strcpy( concatString, one );
strcat( concatString, two );

...

// delete buffer:
delete[] concatString;

But unless you specifically don't want or can't use the C++ standard library, using std::string is probably safer.

How can I detect window size with jQuery?

//get dimensions
var height = $(window).height();
var width = $(window).width();

//refresh on resize
$(window).resize(function() {
  location.reload(true)
});

not sure if you wanted to tinker with the dimensions of elements or actually refresh the page. so here a bunch of different things pick what you want. you can even put the height and width in the resize event if you really wanted.

Importing Excel files into R, xlsx or xls

As stated by many here, I am writing the same thing but with an additional point!

At first we need to make sure that our R Studio has these two packages installed:

  1. "readxl"
  2. "XLConnect"

In order to load a package in R you can use the below function:

install.packages("readxl/XLConnect")
library(XLConnect)
search()

search will display the list of current packages being available in your R Studio.

Now another catch, even though you might have these two packages but still you may encounter problem while reading "xlsx" file and the error could be like "error: more columns than column name"

To solve this issue you can simply resave your excel sheet "xlsx" in to

"CSV (Comma delimited)"

and your life will be super easy....

Have fun!!

How to find the nearest parent of a Git branch?

What is JavaScript's highest integer value that a number can go to without losing precision?

Firefox 3 doesn't seem to have a problem with huge numbers.

1e+200 * 1e+100 will calculate fine to 1e+300.

Safari seem to have no problem with it as well. (For the record, this is on a Mac if anyone else decides to test this.)

Unless I lost my brain at this time of day, this is way bigger than a 64-bit integer.

Specifying and saving a figure with exact size in pixels

This solution works for matplotlib versions 3.0.1, 3.0.3 and 3.2.1.

def save_inp_as_output(_img, c_name, dpi=100):
    h, w, _ = _img.shape
    fig, axes = plt.subplots(figsize=(h/dpi, w/dpi))
    fig.subplots_adjust(top=1.0, bottom=0, right=1.0, left=0, hspace=0, wspace=0)
    axes.imshow(_img)
    axes.axis('off')
    plt.savefig(c_name, dpi=dpi, format='jpeg')

Because the subplots_adjust setting makes the axis fill the figure, you don't want to specify a bbox_inches='tight', as it actually creates whitespace padding in this case. This solution works when you have more than 1 subplot also.

Insert and set value with max()+1 problems

SELECT MAX(col) +1 is not safe -- it does not ensure that you aren't inserting more than one customer with the same customer_id value, regardless if selecting from the same table or any others. The proper way to ensure a unique integer value is assigned on insertion into your table in MySQL is to use AUTO_INCREMENT. The ANSI standard is to use sequences, but MySQL doesn't support them. An AUTO_INCREMENT column can only be defined in the CREATE TABLE statement:

CREATE TABLE `customers` (
  `customer_id` int(11) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  `firstname` varchar(45) DEFAULT NULL,
  `surname` varchar(45) DEFAULT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (`customer_id`)
)

That said, this worked fine for me on 5.1.49:

CREATE TABLE `customers` (
  `customer_id` int(11) NOT NULL DEFAULT '0',
  `firstname` varchar(45) DEFAULT NULL,
  `surname` varchar(45) DEFAULT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (`customer_id`)
) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=latin1$$

INSERT INTO customers VALUES (1, 'a', 'b');

INSERT INTO customers
SELECT MAX(customer_id) + 1, 'jim', 'sock'
  FROM CUSTOMERS;

Check if item is in an array / list

Use a lambda function.

Let's say you have an array:

nums = [0,1,5]

Check whether 5 is in nums in Python 3.X:

(len(list(filter (lambda x : x == 5, nums))) > 0)

Check whether 5 is in nums in Python 2.7:

(len(filter (lambda x : x == 5, nums)) > 0)

This solution is more robust. You can now check whether any number satisfying a certain condition is in your array nums.

For example, check whether any number that is greater than or equal to 5 exists in nums:

(len(filter (lambda x : x >= 5, nums)) > 0)

link_to method and click event in Rails

another solution is catching onClick event and for aggregate data to js function you can

.hmtl.erb

<%= link_to "Action", 'javascript:;', class: 'my-class', data: { 'array' => %w(foo bar) } %>

.js

// handle my-class click
$('a.my-class').on('click', function () {
  var link = $(this);
  var array = link.data('array');
});

Which selector do I need to select an option by its text?

This works for me:

var result = $('#SubjectID option')
            .filter(function ()
             { return $(this).html() == "English"; }).val();

The result variable will return the index of the matched text value. Now I will just set it using it's index:

$('#SubjectID').val(result);

How to use patterns in a case statement?

I don't think you can use braces.

According to the Bash manual about case in Conditional Constructs.

Each pattern undergoes tilde expansion, parameter expansion, command substitution, and arithmetic expansion.

Nothing about Brace Expansion unfortunately.

So you'd have to do something like this:

case $1 in
    req*)
        ...
        ;;
    met*|meet*)
        ...
        ;;
    *)
        # You should have a default one too.

Calendar Recurring/Repeating Events - Best Storage Method

Why not use a mechanism similar to Apache cron jobs? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cron

For calendar\scheduling I'd use slightly different values for "bits" to accommodate standard calendar reoccurence events - instead of [day of week (0 - 7), month (1 - 12), day of month (1 - 31), hour (0 - 23), min (0 - 59)]

-- I'd use something like [Year (repeat every N years), month (1 - 12), day of month (1 - 31), week of month (1-5), day of week (0 - 7)]

Hope this helps.

How to pass data using NotificationCenter in swift 3.0 and NSNotificationCenter in swift 2.0?

Swift 2.0

Pass info using userInfo which is a optional Dictionary of type [NSObject : AnyObject]?

  let imageDataDict:[String: UIImage] = ["image": image]

  // Post a notification
  NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter().postNotificationName(notificationName, object: nil, userInfo: imageDataDict)

 // Register to receive notification in your class
 NSNotificationCenter.defaultCenter().addObserver(self, selector: #selector(self.showSpinningWheel(_:)), name: notificationName, object: nil)

 // handle notification
 func showSpinningWheel(notification: NSNotification) {

  if let image = notification.userInfo?["image"] as? UIImage {
  // do something with your image
  }
 }

Swift 3.0 version and above

The userInfo now takes [AnyHashable:Any]? as an argument, which we provide as a dictionary literal in Swift

  let imageDataDict:[String: UIImage] = ["image": image]

  // post a notification
  NotificationCenter.default.post(name: NSNotification.Name(rawValue: "notificationName"), object: nil, userInfo: imageDataDict)
  // `default` is now a property, not a method call

 // Register to receive notification in your class
 NotificationCenter.default.addObserver(self, selector: #selector(self.showSpinningWheel(_:)), name: NSNotification.Name(rawValue: "notificationName"), object: nil)

 // handle notification
 // For swift 4.0 and above put @objc attribute in front of function Definition
 func showSpinningWheel(_ notification: NSNotification) {

  if let image = notification.userInfo?["image"] as? UIImage {
  // do something with your image
  }
 }

NOTE: Notification “names” are no longer strings, but are of type Notification.Name, hence why we are using NSNotification.Name(rawValue:"notificationName") and we can extend Notification.Name with our own custom notifications.

extension Notification.Name {
static let myNotification = Notification.Name("myNotification")
}

// and post notification like this
NotificationCenter.default.post(name: .myNotification, object: nil)

What is the purpose of shuffling and sorting phase in the reducer in Map Reduce Programming?

This is a good reading. Hope it helps. In terms of sorting you are concerning, I think it is for the merge operation in last step of Map. When map operation is done, and need to write the result to local disk, a multi-merge will be operated on the splits generated from buffer. And for a merge operation, sorting each partition in advanced is helpful.

How to declare a static const char* in your header file?

You need to define static variables in a translation unit, unless they are of integral types.

In your header:

private:
    static const char *SOMETHING;
    static const int MyInt = 8; // would be ok

In the .cpp file:

const char *YourClass::SOMETHING = "something";

C++ standard, 9.4.2/4:

If a static data member is of const integral or const enumeration type, its declaration in the class definition can specify a constant-initializer which shall be an integral constant expression. In that case, the member can appear in integral constant expressions within its scope. The member shall still be defined in a namespace scope if it is used in the program and the namespace scope definition shall not contain an initializer.

Django: How can I call a view function from template?

One option is, you can wrap the submit button with a form

Something like this:

<form action="{% url path.to.request_page %}" method="POST">
    <input id="submit" type="button" value="Click" />
</form>

(remove the onclick and method)

If you want to load a specific part of the page, without page reload - you can do

<input id="submit" type="button" value="Click" data_url/>

and on a submit listener

$(function(){
     $('form').on('submit', function(e){
         e.preventDefault();
         $.ajax({
             url: $(this).attr('action'),
             method: $(this).attr('method'),
             success: function(data){ $('#target').html(data) }
         });
     });
});

Maximum number of records in a MySQL database table

I suggest, never delete data. Don't say if the tables is longer than 1000 truncate the end of the table. There needs to be real business logic in your plan like how long has this user been inactive. For example, if it is longer than 1 year then put them in a different table. You would have this happen weekly or monthly in a maintenance script in the middle of a slow time.

When you run into to many rows in your table then you should start sharding the tables or partitioning and put old data in old tables by year such as users_2011_jan, users_2011_feb or use numbers for the month. Then change your programming to work with this model. Maybe make a new table with less information to summarize the data in less columns and then only refer to the bigger partitioned tables when you need more information such as when the user is viewing their profile. All of this should be considered very carefully so in the future it isn't too expensive to re-factor. You could also put only the users which comes to your site all the time in one table and the users that never come in an archived set of tables.

How do I get the IP address into a batch-file variable?

For my system, I had numerous IPv4 Addresses, only one of which was correct. A simple way to sort out and check it is as follows:

for /f "tokens=1,2* delims=:" %%A in ('ipconfig ^| find "IPv4 Address"') do (
    set "tempip=%%~B"
    set "tempip=!tempip: =!"
    ping !tempip! -n 1 -w 50
    if !errorlevel!==0 (
        set localip=!tempip!
        goto foundlocal
    )
)

Issue with adding common code as git submodule: "already exists in the index"

if there exists a folder named x under git control, you want add a same name submodule , you should delete folder x and commit it first.

Updated by @ujjwal-singh:

Committing is not needed, staging suffices.. git add / git rm -r

javascript find and remove object in array based on key value

You can simplify this, and there's really no need for using jquery here.

var id = 88;

for(var i = 0; i < data.length; i++) {
    if(data[i].id == id) {
        data.splice(i, 1);
        break;
    }
}

Just iterate through the list, find the matching id, splice, and then break to exit your loop

TypeError: $(...).on is not a function

This problem is solved, in my case, by encapsulating my jQuery in:

(function($) {
//my jquery
})(jQuery);

Array or List in Java. Which is faster?

Array is faster - all memory is pre-allocated in advance.

Effect of using sys.path.insert(0, path) and sys.path(append) when loading modules

Because python checks in the directories in sequential order starting at the first directory in sys.path list, till it find the .py file it was looking for.

Ideally, the current directory or the directory of the script is the first always the first element in the list, unless you modify it, like you did. From documentation -

As initialized upon program startup, the first item of this list, path[0], is the directory containing the script that was used to invoke the Python interpreter. If the script directory is not available (e.g. if the interpreter is invoked interactively or if the script is read from standard input), path[0] is the empty string, which directs Python to search modules in the current directory first. Notice that the script directory is inserted before the entries inserted as a result of PYTHONPATH.

So, most probably, you had a .py file with the same name as the module you were trying to import from, in the current directory (where the script was being run from).

Also, a thing to note about ImportErrors , lets say the import error says - ImportError: No module named main - it doesn't mean the main.py is overwritten, no if that was overwritten we would not be having issues trying to read it. Its some module above this that got overwritten with a .py or some other file.

Example -

My directory structure looks like -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py

Now From testmain.py , I call from shared import phtest , it works fine.

Now lets say I introduce a shared.py in test directory` , example -

 - test
    - shared
         - __init__.py
         - phtest.py
  - testmain.py
  - shared.py

Now when I try to do from shared import phtest from testmain.py , I will get the error -

ImportError: cannot import name 'phtest'

As you can see above, the file that is causing the issue is shared.py , not phtest.py .

Meaning of "487 Request Terminated"

The 487 Response indicates that the previous request was terminated by user/application action. The most common occurrence is when the CANCEL happens as explained above. But it is also not limited to CANCEL. There are other cases where such responses can be relevant. So it depends on where you are seeing this behavior and whether its a user or application action that caused it.

15.1.2 UAS Behavior==> BYE Handling in RFC 3261

The UAS MUST still respond to any pending requests received for that dialog. It is RECOMMENDED that a 487 (Request Terminated) response be generated to those pending requests.

What Vim command(s) can be used to quote/unquote words?

VIM for vscode does it awsomely. It's based one vim-surround if you don't use vscode.

Some examples:

"test" with cursor inside quotes type cs"' to end up with 'test'

"test" with cursor inside quotes type ds" to end up with test

"test" with cursor inside quotes type cs"t and enter 123> to end up with <123>test

test with cursor on word test type ysaw) to end up with (test)

How can moment.js be imported with typescript?

Update

Apparently, moment now provides its own type definitions (according to sivabudh at least from 2.14.1 upwards), thus you do not need typings or @types at all.

import * as moment from 'moment' should load the type definitions provided with the npm package.

That said however, as said in moment/pull/3319#issuecomment-263752265 the moment team seems to have some issues in maintaining those definitions (they are still searching someone who maintains them).

You need to install moment typings without the --ambient flag.

Then include it using import * as moment from 'moment'

React Router v4 - How to get current route?

In react router 4 the current route is in - this.props.location.pathname. Just get this.props and verify. If you still do not see location.pathname then you should use the decorator withRouter.

This might look something like this:

import {withRouter} from 'react-router-dom';

const SomeComponent = withRouter(props => <MyComponent {...props}/>);

class MyComponent extends React.Component {
  SomeMethod () {
    const {pathname} = this.props.location;

Use function powerset() from package more_itertools.

Yields all possible subsets of the iterable

>>> list(powerset([1, 2, 3]))
[(), (1,), (2,), (3,), (1, 2), (1, 3), (2, 3), (1, 2, 3)]

If you want sets, use:

list(map(set, powerset(iterable)))

How to automatically allow blocked content in IE?

You have two options:

    <!-- saved from url=(0014)about:internet -->

  2. Disable this feature. To do so go to Internet Options->Advanced->Security->Allow Active Content... Then close IE. When you restart IE, it will not give you this error.

How to escape a JSON string to have it in a URL?

I'll offer an oddball alternative. Sometimes it's easier to use different encoding, especially if you're dealing with a variety of systems that don't all handle the details of URL encoding the same way. This isn't the most mainstream approach but can come in handy in certain situations.

Rather than URL-encoding the data, you can base64-encode it. The benefit of this is the encoded data is very generic, consisting only of alpha characters and sometimes trailing ='s. Example:

JSON array-of-strings:

["option", "Fred's dog", "Bill & Trudy", "param=3"]

That data, URL-encoded as the data param:

"data=%5B%27option%27%2C+%22Fred%27s+dog%22%2C+%27Bill+%26+Trudy%27%2C+%27param%3D3%27%5D"

Same, base64-encoded:

"data=WyJvcHRpb24iLCAiRnJlZCdzIGRvZyIsICJCaWxsICYgVHJ1ZHkiLCAicGFyYW09MyJd"

The base64 approach can be a bit shorter, but more importantly it's simpler. I often have problems moving URL-encoded data between cURL, web browsers and other clients, usually due to quotes, embedded % signs and so on. Base64 is very neutral because it doesn't use special characters.

How to sort by Date with DataTables jquery plugin?

Just in case someone is having trouble where they have blank spaces either in the date values or in cells, you will have to handle those bits. Sometimes an empty space is not handled by trim function coming from html it's like "$nbsp;". If you don't handle these, your sorting will not work properly and will break where ever there is a blank space.

I got this bit of code from jquery extensions here too and changed it a little bit to suit my requirement. You should do the same:) cheers!

function trim(str) {
    str = str.replace(/^\s+/, '');
    for (var i = str.length - 1; i >= 0; i--) {

            str = str.substring(0, i + 1);

Using :before CSS pseudo element to add image to modal

http://caniuse.com/#search=::after

::after and ::before with content are better to use as they're supported in every major browser other than Internet Explorer at least 5 versions back. Internet Explorer has complete support in version 9+ and partial support in version 8.

Is this what you're looking for?

.Modal::after{
  content:url('blackCarrot.png'); /* with class ModalCarrot ??*/
  position:relative; /*or absolute*/
  z-index:100000; /*a number that's more than the modal box*/
  left:-50px;
  top:10px;
}

.ModalCarrot{
   position:absolute;
   left:50%;
   margin-left:-8px;
   top:-16px;
}

If not, can you explain a little better?

or you could use jQuery, like Joshua said:

$(".Modal").before("<img src='blackCarrot.png' class='ModalCarrot' />");

Array of PHP Objects

Yes, its possible to have array of objects in PHP.

class MyObject {
  private $property;

  public function  __construct($property) {
    $this->Property = $property;
  }
}
$ListOfObjects[] = new myObject(1);
$ListOfObjects[] = new myObject(2);
$ListOfObjects[] = new myObject(3);
$ListOfObjects[] = new myObject(4);

print "<pre>";
print_r($ListOfObjects);
print "</pre>";

Warning :-Presenting view controllers on detached view controllers is discouraged

Wait for viewDidAppear():

This error can also arise if you are trying to present view controller before view actually did appear, for example presenting view in viewWillAppear() or earlier. Try to present another view after viewDidAppear() or inside of it.

Programmatically switching between tabs within Swift

The viewController has to be a child of UITabBarControllerDelegate. So you just need to add the following code on SWIFT 3

self.tabBarController?.selectedIndex = 1

Count Rows in Doctrine QueryBuilder

Since Doctrine 2.6 it is possible to use count() method directly from EntityRepository. For details see the link.

What are best practices for multi-language database design?

What we do, is to create two tables for each multilingual object.

E.g. the first table contains only language-neutral data (primary key, etc.) and the second table contains one record per language, containing the localized data plus the ISO code of the language.

In some cases we add a DefaultLanguage field, so that we can fall-back to that language if no localized data is available for a specified language.

Example:

Table "Product":
----------------
ID                 : int
<any other language-neutral fields>

Table "ProductTranslations"
---------------------------
ID : int (foreign key referencing the Product)
Language           : varchar  (e.g. "en-US", "de-CH")
IsDefault          : bit
ProductDescription : nvarchar
<any other localized data>

With this approach, you can handle as many languages as needed (without having to add additional fields for each new language).

Update (2014-12-14): please have a look at this answer, for some additional information about the implementation used to load multilingual data into an application.

How Does Modulus Divison Work

Most explanations miss one important step, let's fill the gap using another example.

Given the following:

Dividend: 16
Divisor: 6

The modulus function looks like this:

16 % 6 = 4

Let's determine why this is.

First, perform integer division, which is similar to normal division, except any fractional number (a.k.a. remainder) is discarded:

16 / 6 = 2

Then, multiply the result of the above division (2) with our divisor (6):

2 * 6 = 12

Finally, subtract the result of the above multiplication (12) from our dividend (16):

16 - 12 = 4

The result of this subtraction, 4, the remainder, is the same result of our modulus above!

Uncaught TypeError: (intermediate value)(...) is not a function

To make semicolon rules simple

Every line that begins with a (, [, `, or any operator (/, +, - are the only valid ones), must begin with a semicolon.

func()
;[0].concat(myarr).forEach(func)
;(myarr).forEach(func)
;`hello`.forEach(func)
;/hello/.exec(str)
;+0
;-0

This prevents a

func()[0].concat(myarr).forEach(func)(myarr).forEach(func)`hello`.forEach(func)/hello/.forEach(func)+0-0

monstrocity.

Additional Note

To mention what will happen: brackets will index, parentheses will be treated as function parameters. The backtick would transform into a tagged template, and regex or explicitly signed integers will turn into operators. Of course, you can just add a semicolon to the end of every line. It's good to keep mind though when you're quickly prototyping and are dropping your semicolons.

Also, adding semicolons to the end of every line won't help you with the following, so keep in mind statements like

return // Will automatically insert semicolon, and return undefined.
    (1+2);
i // Adds a semicolon
   ++ // But, if you really intended i++ here, your codebase needs help.

The above case will happen to return/continue/break/++/--. Any linter will catch this with dead-code or ++/-- syntax error (++/-- will never realistically happen).

Finally, if you want file concatenation to work, make sure each file ends with a semicolon. If you're using a bundler program (recommended), it should do this automatically.

How to create an empty R vector to add new items

I've also seen

x <- {}

Now you can concatenate or bind a vector of any dimension to x

rbind(x, 1:10)
cbind(x, 1:10)
c(x, 10)

Changing date format in R

pandas dataframe convert column type to string or categorical

You need astype:

df['zipcode'] = df.zipcode.astype(str)
#df.zipcode = df.zipcode.astype(str)

For converting to categorical:

df['zipcode'] = df.zipcode.astype('category')
#df.zipcode = df.zipcode.astype('category')

Another solution is Categorical:

df['zipcode'] = pd.Categorical(df.zipcode)

Sample with data:

import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame({'zipcode': {17384: 98125, 2680: 98107, 722: 98005, 18754: 98109, 14554: 98155}, 'bathrooms': {17384: 1.5, 2680: 0.75, 722: 3.25, 18754: 1.0, 14554: 2.5}, 'sqft_lot': {17384: 1650, 2680: 3700, 722: 51836, 18754: 2640, 14554: 9603}, 'bedrooms': {17384: 2, 2680: 2, 722: 4, 18754: 2, 14554: 4}, 'sqft_living': {17384: 1430, 2680: 1440, 722: 4670, 18754: 1130, 14554: 3180}, 'floors': {17384: 3.0, 2680: 1.0, 722: 2.0, 18754: 1.0, 14554: 2.0}})

jQuery selector for id starts with specific text

Use jquery starts with attribute selector

$('[id^=editDialog]')

Alternative solution - 1 (highly recommended)

A cleaner solution is to add a common class to each of the divs & use

$('.commonClass').

But you can use the first one if html markup is not in your hands & cannot change it for some reason.

Alternative solution - 2 (not recommended if n is a large number) (as per @Mihai Stancu's suggestion)

$('#editDialog-0, #editDialog-1, #editDialog-2,...,#editDialog-n')

Note: If there are 2 or 3 selectors and if the list doesn't change, this is probably a viable solution but it is not extensible because we have to update the selectors when there is a new ID in town.

How to get the absolute path to the public_html folder?

This is super old, but I came across it and this worked for me.

<?php
//Get absolute path
$path = getcwd();
//strip the path at your root dir name and everything that follows it
$path = substr($path, 0, strpos($path, "root"));
echo "This Is Your Absolute Path: ";
echo $path; //This will output /home/public_html/
?>

How to get the absolute coordinates of a view

Following Romain Guy's comment, here's how I fixed it. Hopefully it'll help anyone else who also had this problem.

I was indeed trying to get the positions of the views before they had been laid out on the screen but it wasn't at all obvious that was happening. Those lines had been placed after the initilisation code ran, so I assumed everything was ready. However, this code was still in onCreate(); by experimenting with Thread.sleep() I discovered that the layout is not actually finalised until after onCreate() all the way to onResume() had finished executing. So indeed, the code was trying to run before the layout had finished being positioned on the screen. By adding the code to an OnClickListener (or some other Listener) the correct values were obtained because it could only be fired after the layout had finished.

How to set tint for an image view programmatically in android?

Better simplified extension function thanks to ADev

jQuery, get ID of each element in a class using .each?

Try this, replacing .myClassName with the actual name of the class (but keep the period at the beginning).

$('.myClassName').each(function() {
    alert( this.id );
});

So if the class is "test", you'd do $('.test').each(func....

This is the specific form of .each() that iterates over a jQuery object.

The form you were using iterates over any type of collection. So you were essentially iterating over an array of characters t,e,s,t.

Using that form of $.each(), you would need to do it like this:

$.each($('.myClassName'), function() {
    alert( this.id );
});

...which will have the same result as the example above.

AND/OR in Python?

Try this solution:

for m in ["a", "á", "à", "ã", "â"]:
    try:
        somelist.remove(m)
    except:
        pass

Just for your information. and and or operators are also using to return values. It is useful when you need to assign value to variable but you have some pre-requirements

operator or returns first not null value

#init values
a,b,c,d = (1,2,3,None)

print(d or a or b or c)
#output value of a - 1

print(b or a or c or d)
#output value of b - 2

Operator and returns last value in the sequence if any of the members don't have None value or if they have at least one None value we get None

print(a and d and b and c)
#output: None

print(a or b or c)
#output value of c - 3

Error 5 : Access Denied when starting windows service

One of the causes for this error is insufficient permissions (Authenticated Users) in your local folder. To give permission for 'Authenticated Users' Open the security tab in properties of your folder, Edit and Add 'Authenticated Users' group and Apply changes.

Once this was done I was able to run services even through network service account (before this I was only able to run with Local system account).

How can I extract audio from video with ffmpeg?

If the audio wrapped into the avi is not mp3-format to start with, you may need to specify -acodec mp3 as an additional parameter. Or whatever your mp3 codec is (on Linux systems its probably -acodec libmp3lame). You may also get the same effect, platform-agnostic, by instead specifying -f mp3 to "force" the format to mp3, although not all versions of ffmpeg still support that switch. Your Mileage May Vary.

How do I loop through items in a list box and then remove those item?

Here my solution without going backward and without a temporary list

{
  string s = listBox1.Items[0] as string;
  // do something with s
  listBox1.Items.RemoveAt(0);
}

Is there a better jQuery solution to this.form.submit();?

In JQuery you can call

$("form:first").trigger("submit")

Don't know if that is much better. I think form.submit(); is pretty universal.

Send array with Ajax to PHP script

dataString suggests the data is formatted in a string (and maybe delimted by a character).

$data = explode(",", $_POST['data']);
foreach($data as $d){

if dataString is not a string but infact an array (what your question indicates) use JSON.

Importing text file into excel sheet

I think my answer to my own question here is the simplest solution to what you are trying to do:

  1. Select the cell where the first line of text from the file should be.

  2. Use the Data/Get External Data/From File dialog to select the text file to import.

  3. Format the imported text as required.

  4. In the Import Data dialog that opens, click on Properties...

  5. Uncheck the Prompt for file name on refresh box.

  6. Whenever the external file changes, click the Data/Get External Data/Refresh All button.

Note: in your case, you should probably want to skip step #5.

How to make the script wait/sleep in a simple way in unity

You were correct to use WaitForSeconds. But I suspect that you tried using it without coroutines. That's how it should work:

}

private IEnumerator SomeCoroutine()

POST request send json data java HttpUrlConnection

I had a similar issue, I was getting 400, Bad Request only with the PUT, where as POST request was perfectly fine.

Below code worked fine for POST but was giving BAD Request for PUT:

os.writeBytes(json);

After making below changes worked fine for both POST and PUT

conn.setRequestProperty("Content-Type", "application/json; charset=UTF-8");
os.write(json.getBytes("UTF-8"));

What is the difference between window, screen, and document in Javascript?

The window is the first thing that gets loaded into the browser. This window object has the majority of the properties like length, innerWidth, innerHeight, name, if it has been closed, its parents, and more.

The document object is your html, aspx, php, or other document that will be loaded into the browser. The document actually gets loaded inside the window object and has properties available to it like title, URL, cookie, etc. What does this really mean? That means if you want to access a property for the window it is window.property, if it is document it is window.document.property which is also available in short as document.property.

How do I convert an enum to a list in C#?

If you want Enum int as key and name as value, good if you storing the number to database and it is from Enum!

        Key: 2; Value: DateTime
        Key: 3; Value: Numeric
     */
}

public class EnumValueDto
{
    public int Key { get; set; }

    public string Value { get; set; }

    public static ICollection<EnumValueDto> ConvertEnumToList<T>() where T : struct, IConvertible
    {
        if (!typeof(T).IsEnum)
        {
            throw new Exception("Type given T must be an Enum");
        }

        var result = Enum.GetValues(typeof(T))
                         .Cast<T>()
                         .Select(x =>  new EnumValueDto { Key = Convert.ToInt32(x),

                         .ToList()
                         .AsReadOnly();

Program to find prime numbers

There are some very optimal ways to implement the algorithm. But if you don't know much about maths and you simply follow the definition of prime as the requirement: a number that is only divisible by 1 and by itself (and nothing else), here's a simple to understand code for positive numbers.

public bool IsPrime(int candidateNumber)
{
    int fromNumber = 2;
    int toNumber = candidateNumber - 1;

    while(fromNumber <= toNumber)
    {
        bool isDivisible = candidateNumber % fromNumber == 0;
        if (isDivisible)
        {
            return false;
        }

        fromNumber++;
    }
    return true;
}

Since every number is divisible by 1 and by itself, we start checking from 2 onwards until the number immediately before itself. That's the basic reasoning.

Execution order of events when pressing PrimeFaces p:commandButton

I just love getting information like BalusC gives here - and he is kind enough to help SO many people with such GOOD information that I regard his words as gospel, but I was not able to use that order of events to solve this same kind of timing issue in my project. Since BalusC put a great general reference here that I even bookmarked, I thought I would donate my solution for some advanced timing issues in the same place since it does solve the original poster's timing issues as well. </p:commandButton>

The dialog is at the top of the XHTML outside this form and it has a form of its own embedded in the dialog along with a datatable which holds additional commands for streaming the media that all needed to be primed and ready to go when the dialog is presented. You can use this same technique to do things like download customized documents that need to be prepared before they are streamed to the user's computer via fileDownload buttons in the dialog box as well.

As I said, this is a more complicated example, but it hits all the high points of your problem and mine. When the command button is clicked, the result is to first insure the backing bean is updated with the results of the pickList, then tell the backing bean to prepare streams for the user based on their selections in the pick list, then update the controls in the dynamic dialog with an update, then show the dialog box ready for the user to start streaming their content.

The trick to it was to use BalusC's order of events for the main commandButton and then to add the <p:ajax process="formPickList" /> bit to ensure it was executed first - because nothing happens correctly unless the pickList updated the backing bean first (something that was not happening for me before I added it). So, yea, that commandButton rocks because you can affect previous, pending and current components as well as the backing beans - but the timing to interrelate all of them is not easy to get a handle on sometimes.

Happy coding!

Force browser to download image files on click

convert:not authorized `aaaa` @ error/constitute.c/ReadImage/453

After a recent update on my Ubuntu 16.04 system I have also started getting this error when trying to run convert on .ps files to convert them into pdfs.

This fix worked for me:

In a terminal run:

sudo gedit /etc/ImageMagick-6/policy.xml

This should open the policy.xml file in the gedit text editor. If it doesn't, your image magick might be installed in a different place. Then change

rights="none"

to

rights="read | write"

for PDF, EPS and PS lines near the bottom of the file. Save and exit, and image magick should then work again.

Two div blocks on same line

What I would first is make the following CSS code:

#bloc1 {
   float: left
}

This will make #bloc2 be inline with #bloc1.

To make it central, I would add #bloc1 and #bloc2 in a separate div. For example:

<style type="text/css">
    #wrapper { margin: 0 auto; }
</style>
<div id="wrapper">
    <div id="bloc1"> ... </div>
    <div id="bloc2"> ... </div>
</div>

Where do I get servlet-api.jar from?

Make sure that you're using the same Servlet API specification that your Web container supports. Refer to this chart if you're using Tomcat: http://tomcat.apache.org/whichversion.html

The Web container that you use will definitely have the API jars you require.

Tomcat 6 for example has it in apache-tomcat-6.0.26/lib/servlet-api.jar

Does a `+` in a URL scheme/host/path represent a space?

}
function fixEscape(str)
{
    return escape(str).replace( "+", "%2B" );
}
</script>

Can we overload the main method in Java?

Yes, you can overload main method in Java. But the program doesn't execute the overloaded main method when you run your program, you have to call the overloaded main method from the actual main method.

that means main method acts as an entry point for the java interpreter to start the execute of the application. where as a loaded main need to be called from main.

Add to integers in a list

Yes, it is possible since lists are mutable.

Look at the built-in enumerate() function to get an idea how to iterate over the list and find each entry's index (which you can then use to assign to the specific list item).

Twitter Bootstrap vs jQuery UI?

I have on several projects.

The biggest difference in my opinion

  • jQuery UI is fallback safe, it works correctly and looks good in old browsers, where Bootstrap is based on CSS3 which basically means GREAT in new browsers, not so great in old

  • Update frequency: Bootstrap is getting some great big updates with awesome new features, but sadly they might break previous code, so you can't just install bootstrap and update when there is a new major release, it basically requires a lot of new coding

  • jQuery UI is based on good html structure with transformations from JavaScript, while Bootstrap is based on visually and customizable inline structure. (calling a widget in JQUERY UI, defining it in Bootstrap)

So what to choose?

That always depends on the type of project you are working on. Is cool and fast looking widgets better, or are your users often using old browsers?

I always end up using both, so I can use the best of both worlds.

Here are the links to both frameworks, if you decide to use them.

  2. Bootstrap

How to use NSJSONSerialization

@rckoenes already showed you how to correctly get your data from the JSON string.

To the question you asked: EXC_BAD_ACCESS almost always comes when you try to access an object after it has been [auto-]released. This is not specific to JSON [de-]serialization but, rather, just has to do with you getting an object and then accessing it after it's been released. The fact that it came via JSON doesn't matter.

There are many-many pages describing how to debug this -- you want to Google (or SO) obj-c zombie objects and, in particular, NSZombieEnabled, which will prove invaluable to you in helping determine the source of your zombie objects. ("Zombie" is what it's called when you release an object but keep a pointer to it and try to reference it later.)

Why is my JavaScript function sometimes "not defined"?

It shouldn't be possible for this to happen if you're just including the scripts on the page.

The "copyArray" function should always be available when the JavaScript code starts executing no matter if it is declared before or after it -- unless you're loading the JavaScript files in dynamically with a dependency library. There are all sorts of problems with timing if that's the case.

How do I set up cron to run a file just once at a specific time?

at is the correct way.

If you don't have the at command in the machine and you also don't have install privilegies on it, you can put something like this on cron (maybe with the crontab command):

* * * 5 * /path/to/comand_to_execute; /usr/bin/crontab -l | /usr/bin/grep -iv command_to_execute | /usr/bin/crontab -

it will execute your command one time and remove it from cron after that.

Install dependencies globally and locally using package.json

This is a bit old but I ran into the requirement so here is the solution I came up with.

The Problem:

Our development team maintains many .NET web application products we are migrating to AngularJS/Bootstrap. VS2010 does not lend itself easily to custom build processes and my developers are routinely working on multiple releases of our products. Our VCS is Subversion (I know, I know. I'm trying to move to Git but my pesky marketing staff is so demanding) and a single VS solution will include several separate projects. I needed my staff to have a common method for initializing their development environment without having to install the same Node packages (gulp, bower, etc.) several times on the same machine.

TL;DR:

  1. Need "npm install" to install the global Node/Bower development environment as well as all locally required packages for a .NET product.

  2. Global packages should be installed only if not already installed.

  3. Local links to global packages must be created automatically.

The Solution:

We already have a common development framework shared by all developers and all products so I created a NodeJS script to install the global packages when needed and create the local links. The script resides in "....\SharedFiles" relative to the product base folder:

/*******************************************************************************
* $Id: npm-setup.js 12785 2016-01-29 16:34:49Z sthames $
* ==============================================================================
* Parameters: 'links' - Create links in local environment, optional.
*
* <p>NodeJS script to install common development environment packages in global
* environment. <c>packages</c> object contains list of packages to install.</p>
*
* <p>Including 'links' creates links in local environment to global packages.</p>
*
* <p><b>npm ls -g --json</b> command is run to provide the current list of
* global packages for comparison to required packages. Packages are installed
* only if not installed. If the package is installed but is not the required
* package version, the existing package is removed and the required package is
* installed.</p>.
*
* <p>When provided as a "preinstall" script in a "package.json" file, the "npm
* install" command calls this to verify global dependencies are installed.</p>

Now if I want to update a global tool for our developers, I update the "packages" object and check in the new script. My developers check it out and either run it with "node npm-setup.js" or by "npm install" from any of the products under development to update the global environment. The whole thing takes 5 minutes.

In addition, to configure the environment for the a new developer, they must first only install NodeJS and GIT for Windows, reboot their computer, check out the "Shared Files" folder and any products under development, and start working.

The "package.json" for the .NET product calls this script prior to install:

{
"name"                    : "Books",
"description" : "Node (npm) configuration for Books Database Web Application Tools",
"version"                 : "2.1.1",
"private"                 : true,
"scripts":
  {
  "preinstall"            : "node ../../SharedFiles/npm-setup.js links",
  "postinstall"           : "bower install"
  },
"dependencies": {}
}

Notes

  • Note the script reference requires forward slashes even in a Windows environment.

  • "npm ls" will give "npm ERR! extraneous:" messages for all packages locally linked because they are not listed in the "package.json" "dependencies".

Edit 1/29/16

The updated npm-setup.js script above has been modified as follows:

  • Package "version" in var packages is now the "package" value passed to npm install on the command line. This was changed to allow for installing packages from somewhere other than the registered repository.

  • If the package is already installed but is not the one requested, the existing package is removed and the correct one installed.

  • For reasons unknown, npm will periodically throw an EBUSY error (-4082) when performing an install or link. This error is trapped and the command re-executed. The error rarely happens a second time and seems to always clear up.

PHP session lost after redirect

Today I had this problem in a project and I had to change this parameter to false (or remove the lines, by default is disabled):

ini_set( 'session.cookie_secure', 1 );

This happened because the actual project works over http and not https only. Found more info in the docs http://php.net/manual/en/session.security.ini.php

How do you reverse a string in place in JavaScript?

I know that this is an old question that has been well answered, but for my own amusement I wrote the following reverse function and thought I would share it in case it was useful for anyone else. It handles both surrogate pairs and combining marks:

function StringReverse (str)
{
  var charArray = [];
  for (var i = 0; i < str.length; i++)
    {
      if (i+1 < str.length)
        {
          var value = str.charCodeAt(i);
          var nextValue = str.charCodeAt(i+1);
          if (   (   value >= 0xD800 && value <= 0xDBFF
                  && (nextValue & 0xFC00) == 0xDC00) // Surrogate pair)
              || (nextValue >= 0x0300 && nextValue <= 0x036F)) // Combining marks
            {
              charArray.unshift(str.substring(i, i+2));
              i++; // Skip the other half
              continue;
            }
        }

      // Otherwise we just have a rogue surrogate marker or a plain old character.
      charArray.unshift(str[i]);
    }

  return charArray.join('');
}

All props to Mathias, Punycode, and various other references for schooling me on the complexities of character encoding in JavaScript.

Copying sets Java

Starting from Java 10:

Set<E> oldSet = Set.of();
Set<E> newSet = Set.copyOf(oldSet);

Set.copyOf() returns an unmodifiable Set containing the elements of the given Collection.

The given Collection must not be null, and it must not contain any null elements.

How to Pass Parameters to Activator.CreateInstance<T>()

There is another way to pass arguments to CreateInstance through named parameters.

Based on that, you can pass a array towards CreateInstance. This will allow you to have 0 or multiple arguments.

public T CreateInstance<T>(params object[] paramArray)
{
  return (T)Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(T), args:paramArray);
}

How to refer to relative paths of resources when working with a code repository

Try to use a filename relative to the current files path. Example for './my_file':

fn = os.path.join(os.path.dirname(__file__), 'my_file')

In Python 3.4+ you can also use pathlib:

fn = pathlib.Path(__file__).parent / 'my_file'
