Build the full path filename in Python

This works fine:

os.path.join(dir_name, base_filename + "." + filename_suffix)

Keep in mind that os.path.join() exists only because different operating systems use different path separator characters. It smooths over that difference so cross-platform code doesn't have to be cluttered with special cases for each OS. There is no need to do this for file name "extensions" (see footnote) because they are always connected to the rest of the name with a dot character, on every OS.

If using a function anyway makes you feel better (and you like needlessly complicating your code), you can do this:

os.path.join(dir_name, '.'.join((base_filename, filename_suffix)))

If you prefer to keep your code clean, simply include the dot in the suffix:

suffix = '.pdf'
os.path.join(dir_name, base_filename + suffix)

That approach also happens to be compatible with the suffix conventions in pathlib, which was introduced in python 3.4 after this question was asked. New code that doesn't require backward compatibility can do this:

suffix = '.pdf'
pathlib.PurePath(dir_name, base_filename + suffix)

You might prefer the shorter Path instead of PurePath if you're only handling paths for the local OS.

Warning: Do not use pathlib's with_suffix() for this purpose. That method will corrupt base_filename if it ever contains a dot.


Footnote: Outside of Micorsoft operating systems, there is no such thing as a file name "extension". Its presence on Windows comes from MS-DOS and FAT, which borrowed it from CP/M, which has been dead for decades. That dot-plus-three-letters that many of us are accustomed to seeing is just part of the file name on every other modern OS, where it has no built-in meaning.

Allow all remote connections, MySQL

Use the valgrind option --track-origins=yes to have it track the origin of uninitialized values. This will make it slower and take more memory, but can be very helpful if you need to track down the origin of an uninitialized value.

Update: Regarding the point at which the uninitialized value is reported, the valgrind manual states:

It is important to understand that your program can copy around junk (uninitialised) data as much as it likes. Memcheck observes this and keeps track of the data, but does not complain. A complaint is issued only when your program attempts to make use of uninitialised data in a way that might affect your program's externally-visible behaviour.

As for eager reporting of copies of uninitialised memory values, this has been suggested multiple times. list of tuples with 2 members can be converted to ordered dict directly, data structures are actually the same, so we can use dict method on the fly.

I had a similar issue when attempting to start a process without showing the console window. I tested with several different combinations of property values until I found one that exhibited the behavior I wanted.

What is the difference between Cloud, Grid and Cluster?

There's some pretty good answers here but I want to elaborate on all topics:

Cloud: shailesh's answer is awesome, nothing to add there! Basically, An application that's served seamlessly over the network can be considered a Cloud application. Cloud isn't a new invention and it's very similar to Grid computing, but it's more of a buzzword with the spike of recent popularity.

Grid: Grid is defined as a large collection as machines connected by a private network and offers a set of services to users, it acts as a sort of supercomputer by sharing processing power across the machines. Source: Tenenbaum, Andrew.

Cluster: A cluster is different from those two. Clusters are two or more computers who share a network connection that acts as a heart-beat. Clusters are configurable in Active-Active or Active-Passive ways. Active-Active being that each computer runs it's own set of services (Say, one runs a SQL instance, the other runs a web server) and they share some resources such as storage. If one of the computers in a cluster goes down the service fails over to the other node and almost seamlessly starts running there. Active-Passive is similar, but only one machine runs these services and only takes over once there's a failure.

How to resolve this System.IO.FileNotFoundException

I came across a similar situation after publishing a ClickOnce application, and one of my colleagues on a different domain reported that it fails to launch.

To find out what was going on, I added a try catch statement inside the MainWindow method as @BradleyDotNET mentioned in one comment on the original post, and then published again.

Function return value in PowerShell

This part of PowerShell is probably the most stupid aspect. Any extraneous output generated during a function will pollute the result. Sometimes there isn't any output, and then under some conditions there is some other unplanned output, in addition to your planned return value.

So, I remove the assignment from the original function call, so the output ends up on the screen, and then step through until something I didn't plan for pops out in the debugger window (using the PowerShell ISE).

Even things like reserving variables in outer scopes cause output, like [boolean]$isEnabled which will annoyingly spit a False out unless you make it [boolean]$isEnabled = $false.

Another good one is $someCollection.Add("thing") which spits out the new collection count.

When to use DataContract and DataMember attributes?

A data contract is a formal agreement between a service and a client that abstractly describes the data to be exchanged. That is, to communicate, the client and the service do not have to share the same types, only the same data contracts. A data contract precisely defines, for each parameter or return type, what data is serialized (turned into XML) to be exchanged.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) uses a serialization engine called the Data Contract Serializer by default to serialize and deserialize data (convert it to and from XML). All .NET Framework primitive types, such as integers and strings, as well as certain types treated as primitives, such as DateTime and XmlElement, can be serialized with no other preparation and are considered as having default data contracts. I got it too, for me the problem got resolved after deleting the m2 folder (C:\Users\username.m2) and updating the maven project.

strip() is a method for strings, you are calling it on a list, hence the error.

Additional debuging steps

  1. try to pull the docker image and tag manually on your computer
  2. Identify the node by doing a 'kubectl/oc get pods -o wide'
  3. ssh into the node (if you can) that can not pull the docker image
  4. check that the node can resolve the DNS of the docker registry by performing a ping.
  5. try to pull the docker image manually on the node
  6. If you are using a private registry, check that your secret exists and the secret is correct. Your secret should also be in the same namespace. Thanks swenzel
  7. Some registries have firewalls that limit ip address access. The firewall may block the pull

I had the same issue, and it appears Gidon's answer has one tiny flaw: it generates a relative URL, which cannot be sent by mail.

My solution looks like this:

The second line deletes the reference to that old branch.

Sun had a fairly large investment in OpenStep for a while. Before Sun entered the picture most things in the foundation, even though it wasn't known as the foundation back then, was prefixed NX, for NeXT, and sometime just before Sun entered the picture everything was renamed to NS. The S most likely did not stand for Sun then but after Sun stepped in the general consensus was that it stood for Sun to honor their involvement.

I'm going to take a guess. I think the column name that contains "Number" is something like " Number" or "Number ". If so, then my guess was correct. You should be able to fix it with this:

PHP PDO with foreach and fetch

This is because you are reading a cursor, not an array. This means that you are reading sequentially through the results and when you get to the end you would need to reset the cursor to the beginning of the results to read them again.

If you did want to read over the results multiple times, you could use fetchAll to read the results into a true array and then it would work as you are expecting.

Solution to "subquery returns more than 1 row" error

Adding my answer, because it elaborates the idea that you can SELECT multiple columns from the table from which you subquery.

Here I needed the the most recently cast cote and it's associated information.

I first tried simply to SELECT the max(votedate) along with vote, itemid, userid etc., but while the query would return the max votedate, it would also return the a random row for the other information. Hard to see among a bunch of 1s and 0s.

This worked well:

JavaBeans is a standard, and its basic syntax requirements have been clearly explained by the other answers.

However, IMO, it is more than a simple syntax standard. The real meaning or intended usage of JavaBeans is, together with various tool supports around the standard, to facilitate code reuse and component-based software engineering, i.e. enable developers to build applications by assembling existing components (classes) and without having to write any code (or only have to write a little glue code). Unfortunately this technology is way under-estimated and under-utilized by the industry, which can be told from the answers in this thread.

  1. it exports just the hardcoded sheet named "Sheet1";
  2. it always exports to the same temp file, overwriting it;
  3. it ignores the locale separation char.

To solve these problems, and meet all my requirements, I've adapted the code from here. I've cleaned it a little to make it more readable.

There are still some small thing with the code above that you should notice:

  1. .Close and DisplayAlerts=True should be in a finally clause, but I don't know how to do it in VBA
  2. It works just if the current filename has 4 letters, like .xlsm. Wouldn't work in .xls excel old files. For file extensions of 3 chars, you must change the - 5 to - 4 when setting MyFileName.
  3. As a collateral effect, your clipboard will be substituted with current sheet contents.

Edit: put Local:=True to save with my locale CSV delimiter.

Sort arrays of primitive types in descending order

There's been some confusion about Arrays.asList in the other answers. If you say

double[] arr = new double[]{6.0, 5.0, 11.0, 7.0};
List xs = Arrays.asList(arr);
System.out.println(xs.size());  // prints 1

then you'll have a List with 1 element. The resulting List has the double[] array as its own element. What you want is to have a List<Double> whose elements are the elements of the double[].

Unfortunately, no solution involving Comparators will work for a primitive array. Arrays.sort only accepts a Comparator when being passed an Object[]. And for the reasons describe above, Arrays.asList won't let you make a List out of the elements of your array.

So despite my earlier answer which the comments below reference, there's no better way than manually reversing the array after sorting. Any other approach (such as copying the elements into a Double[] and reverse-sorting and copying them back) would be more code and slower.

Cross Domain Form POSTing

Same origin policy has nothing to do with sending request to another url (different protocol or domain or port).

It is all about restricting access to (reading) response data from another url. So JavaScript code within a page can post to arbitrary domain or submit forms within that page to anywhere (unless the form is in an iframe with different url).

But what makes these POST requests inefficient is that these requests lack antiforgery tokens, so are ignored by the other url. Moreover, if the JavaScript tries to get that security tokens, by sending AJAX request to the victim url, it is prevented to access that data by Same Origin Policy.

Hide div by default and show it on click with bootstrap

I realize this question is a bit dated and since it shows up on Google search for similar issue I thought I will expand a little bit more on top of @CowWarrior's answer. I was looking for somewhat similar solution, and after scouring through countless SO question/answers and Bootstrap documentations the solution was pretty simple. Again, this would be using inbuilt Bootstrap collapse class to show/hide divs and Bootstrap's "Collapse Event".

What I realized is that it is easy to do it using a Bootstrap Accordion, but most of the time even though the functionality required is "somewhat" similar to an Accordion, it's different in a way that one would want to show hide <div> based on, lets say, menu buttons on a navbar. Below is a simple solution to this. The anchor tags (<a>) could be navbar items and based on a collapse event the corresponding div will replace the existing div. It looks slightly sloppy in CodeSnippet, but it is pretty close to achieving the functionality-

All that the JavaScript does is makes all the other <div> hide using

Python syntax for "if a or b or c but not all of them"

I'd go for:

conds = iter([a, b, c])
if any(conds) and not any(conds):
    # okay...

I think this should short-circuit fairly efficiently

Explanation

By making conds an iterator, the first use of any will short circuit and leave the iterator pointing to the next element if any item is true; otherwise, it will consume the entire list and be False. The next any takes the remaining items in the iterable, and makes sure than there aren't any other true values... If there are, the whole statement can't be true, thus there isn't one unique element (so short circuits again). The last any will either return False or will exhaust the iterable and be True.

note: the above checks if only a single condition is set


If you want to check if one or more items, but not every item is set, then you can use:

not all(conds) and any(conds)

SQL : BETWEEN vs <= and >=

I have a slight preference for BETWEEN because it makes it instantly clear to the reader that you are checking one field for a range. This is especially true if you have similar field names in your table.

If, say, our table has both a transactiondate and a transitiondate, if I read

transactiondate between ...

I know immediately that both ends of the test are against this one field.

If I read

transactiondate>='2009-04-17' and transactiondate<='2009-04-22'

I have to take an extra moment to make sure the two fields are the same.

Also, as a query gets edited over time, a sloppy programmer might separate the two fields. I've seen plenty of queries that say something like

where transactiondate>='2009-04-17'
  and salestype='A'
  and customernumber=customer.idnumber
  and transactiondate<='2009-04-22'

If they try this with a BETWEEN, of course, it will be a syntax error and promptly fixed.
