How do I use boolean variables in Perl?

The most complete, concise definition of false I've come across is:

Anything that stringifies to the empty string or the string 0 is false. Everything else is true.

Therefore, the following values are false:

  • The empty string
  • Numerical value zero
  • An undefined value
  • An object with an overloaded boolean operator that evaluates one of the above.
  • A magical variable that evaluates to one of the above on fetch.

Keep in mind that an empty list literal evaluates to an undefined value in scalar context, so it evaluates to something false.

A note on "true zeroes"

While numbers that stringify to 0 are false, strings that numify to zero aren't necessarily. The only false strings are 0 and the empty string. Any other string, even if it numifies to zero, is true.

The following are strings that are true as a boolean and zero as a number:

  • Without a warning:
    • "0.0"
    • "0E0"
    • "00"
    • "+0"
    • "-0"
    • " 0"
    • "0\n"
    • ".0"
    • "0."
    • "0 but true"
    • "\t00"
    • "\n0e1"
    • "+0.e-9"
  • With a warning:
    • Any string for which Scalar::Util::looks_like_number returns false. (e.g. "abc")

How do I break out of a loop in Perl?

Oh, I found it. You use last instead of break

for my $entry (@array){
    if ($string eq "text"){
         last;
    }
}

How do I find ' % ' with the LIKE operator in SQL Server?

Try this:

declare @var char(3)
set @var='[%]'
select Address from Accomodation where Address like '%'+@var+'%'

You must use [] cancels the effect of wildcard, so you read % as a normal character, idem about character _

Windows 8.1 gets Error 720 on connect VPN

I had the same problem. Most posted solutions would not work. I ran sfc /scannow and it reported that some errors could not be fixed. To address that problem I ran the command

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Ironically, I later found the WAN errors had gone away, the 720 VPN error went away and my VPN worked.

Hard to believe that the WAN errors were corrected by this rather esoteric command, but it's worth a try.

JSON Invalid UTF-8 middle byte

I got this after saving the JSON file using Notepad2, so I had to open it with Notepad++ and then say "Convert to UTF-8". Then it worked.

Get all dates between two dates in SQL Server

This is the method that I would use.

DECLARE
    @DateFrom DATETIME = GETDATE(),
    @DateTo DATETIME = DATEADD(HOUR, -1, GETDATE() + 2); -- Add 2 days and minus one hour

-- Dates spaced a day apart

WITH MyDates (MyDate)
AS (
    SELECT @DateFrom
    UNION ALL
    SELECT DATEADD(DAY, 1, MyDate)
    FROM MyDates
    WHERE MyDate < @DateTo
   )

SELECT
    MyDates.MyDate
    , CONVERT(DATE, MyDates.MyDate) AS [MyDate in DATE format]
FROM
    MyDates;

Here is a similar example, but this time the dates are spaced one hour apart to further aid understanding of how the query works:

-- Alternative example with dates spaced an hour apart

WITH MyDates (MyDate)
AS (SELECT @DateFrom
    UNION ALL
    SELECT DATEADD(HOUR, 1, MyDate)
    FROM MyDates
    WHERE MyDate < @DateTo
   )

SELECT
    MyDates.MyDate
FROM
    MyDates;

As you can see, the query is fast, accurate and versatile.

Unable to run 'adb root' on a rooted Android phone

I finally found out how to do this! Basically you need to run adb shell first and then while you're in the shell run su, which will switch the shell to run as root!

$: adb shell
$: su

The one problem I still have is that sqlite3 is not installed so the command is not recognized.

Lazy Method for Reading Big File in Python?

If your computer, OS and python are 64-bit, then you can use the mmap module to map the contents of the file into memory and access it with indices and slices. Here an example from the documentation:

import mmap
with open("hello.txt", "r+") as f:
    # memory-map the file, size 0 means whole file
    map = mmap.mmap(f.fileno(), 0)
    # read content via standard file methods
    print map.readline() # prints "Hello Python!"
    # read content via slice notation
    print map[:5]  # prints "Hello"
    # update content using slice notation;
    # note that new content must have same size
    map[6:] = " world!\n"
    # ... and read again using standard file methods
    map.seek(0)
    print map.readline() # prints "Hello world!"
    # close the map
    map.close()

If either your computer, OS or python are 32-bit, then mmap-ing large files can reserve large parts of your address space and starve your program of memory.

Vendor code 17002 to connect to SQLDeveloper

I encountered same problem with ORACLE 11G express on Windows. After a long time waiting I got the same error message.

My solution is to make sure the hostname in tnsnames.ora (usually it's not "localhost") and the default hostname in sql developer(usually it's "localhost") same. You can either do this by changing it in the tnsnames.ora, or filling up the same in the sql developer.

Oh, of course you need to reboot all the oracle services (just to be safe).

Hope it helps.

I came across the similar problem again on another machine, but this time above solution doesn't work. After some trying, I found restarting all the oracle related services can fix the problem. Originally when the installation is done, connection can be made. Somehow after several reboot of computer, there is problem. I change all the oracle services with start time as auto. And once I could not connect, I restart them all over again (the core service should be restarted at last order), and works fine.

Some article says it might be due to the MTS problem. Microsoft's problem. Maybe!

Editor does not contain a main type in Eclipse

I installed Eclipse and created a Java project. Created new Java file outside the 'src' directory and tried to run that. I got the same error "Editor does not contain a main type". I just moved the java file into the 'src' folder and could simply run the program. I couldn't understand what other answers were asking to try. It was so simple.

Android appcompat v7:23

First you need to download the latest support repository (17 by the time I write this) from internal SDK manager of Android Studio or from the stand alone SDK manager. Then you can add compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:23.0.0' or any other support library you want to your build.gradle file. (Don't forget the last .0)

Passing Arrays to Function in C++

The simple answer is that arrays are ALWAYS passed by reference and the int arg[] simply lets the compiler know to expect an array

How to create a inset box-shadow only on one side?

The trick is a second .box-inner inside, which is larger in width than the original .box, and the box-shadow is applied to that.

Then, added more padding to the .text to make up for the added width.

This is how the logic looks:

box logic

And here's how it's done in CSS:

Use max width for .inner-box to not cause .box to get wider, and overflow to make sure the remaining is clipped:

.box {
    max-width: 100% !important;
    overflow: hidden;
}

110% is wider than the parent which is 100% in a child's context (should be the same when the parent .box has a fixed width, for example). Negative margins make up for the width and cause the element to be centered (instead of only the right part hiding):

.box-inner {
    width: 110%;
    margin-left:-5%;
    margin-right: -5%;
    -webkit-box-shadow: inset 0px 5px 10px 1px #000000;
    box-shadow: inset 0px 5px 10px 1px #000000;
}

And add some padding on the X axis to make up for the wider .inner-box:

.text {
    padding: 20px 40px;
}

Here's a working Fiddle.

If you inspect the Fiddle, you'll see:

.box .box-inner .text

Reading entire html file to String?

You should use a StringBuilder:

StringBuilder contentBuilder = new StringBuilder();
try {
    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("mypage.html"));
    String str;
    while ((str = in.readLine()) != null) {
        contentBuilder.append(str);
    }
    in.close();
} catch (IOException e) {
}
String content = contentBuilder.toString();

Create a git patch from the uncommitted changes in the current working directory

If you haven't yet commited the changes, then:

git diff > mypatch.patch

But sometimes it happens that part of the stuff you're doing are new files that are untracked and won't be in your git diff output. So, one way to do a patch is to stage everything for a new commit (git add each file, or just git add .) but don't do the commit, and then:

git diff --cached > mypatch.patch

Add the 'binary' option if you want to add binary files to the patch (e.g. mp3 files):

git diff --cached --binary > mypatch.patch

You can later apply the patch:

git apply mypatch.patch

JavaFX FXML controller - constructor vs initialize method

In Addition to the above answers, there probably should be noted that there is a legacy way to implement the initialization. There is an interface called Initializable from the fxml library.

import javafx.fxml.Initializable;

class MyController implements Initializable {
    @FXML private TableView<MyModel> tableView;

    @Override
    public void initialize(URL location, ResourceBundle resources) {
        tableView.getItems().addAll(getDataFromSource());
    }
}

Parameters:

location - The location used to resolve relative paths for the root object, or null if the location is not known.
resources - The resources used to localize the root object, or null if the root object was not localized.

And the note of the docs why the simple way of using @FXML public void initialize() works:

NOTE This interface has been superseded by automatic injection of location and resources properties into the controller. FXMLLoader will now automatically call any suitably annotated no-arg initialize() method defined by the controller. It is recommended that the injection approach be used whenever possible.

Display exact matches only with grep

Recently I came across an issue in grep. I was trying to match the pattern x.y.z and grep returned x.y-z.Using some regular expression we may can overcome this, but with grep whole word matching did not help. Since the script I was writing is a generic one, I cannot restrict search for a specific way as in like x.y.z or x.y-z ..

Quick way I figured is to run a grep and then a condition check var="x.y.z" var1=grep -o x.y.z file.txt if [ $var1 == $var ] echo "Pattern match exact" else echo "Pattern does not match exact" fi

Postgres integer arrays as parameters?

I realize this is an old question, but it took me several hours to find a good solution and thought I'd pass on what I learned here and save someone else the trouble. Try, for example,

SELECT * FROM some_table WHERE id_column = ANY(@id_list)

where @id_list is bound to an int[] parameter by way of

command.Parameters.Add("@id_list", NpgsqlDbType.Array | NpgsqlDbType.Integer).Value = my_id_list;

where command is a NpgsqlCommand (using C# and Npgsql in Visual Studio).

Last element in .each() set

A shorter answer from here, adapted to this question:

var arr = $('.requiredText');
arr.each(function(index, item) {
   var is_last_item = (index == (arr.length - 1));
});

Just for completeness.

\n or \n in php echo not print

$unit1 = "paragrahp1";
$unit2 = "paragrahp2";
echo '<p>'.$unit1.'</p>';
echo '<p>'.$unit2.'</p>';

Use Tag <p> always when starting with a new line so you don't need to use /n type syntax.

How do I install ASP.NET MVC 5 in Visual Studio 2012?

Here are the steps to use ASP.NET MVC 5 in Visual Studio 2012:

  • Start your ASP.NET MVC 4 project.
  • Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi -pre
  • Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc -Pre
  • Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.SignalR -Pre

These two will update:

  • Microsoft.AspNet.Mvc 5.0.0-rc1
  • Microsoft.AspNet.Razor
  • Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi 5.0.0-rc1
  • Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Client 5.0.0-rc1
  • Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Core 5.0.0-rc1
  • Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.WebHost 5.0.0-rc1
  • Microsoft.AspNet.WebPages 3.0.0-rc1
  • and some other goodies

If these upgrades did not update your web.config, then check out this useful page: upgrading from MVC4 to MVC5.

How to check if array is not empty?

There's no mention of numpy in the question. If by array you mean list, then if you treat a list as a boolean it will yield True if it has items and False if it's empty.

l = []

if l:
    print "list has items"

if not l:
    print "list is empty"

How to allow remote access to my WAMP server for Mobile(Android)

I assume you are using windows. Open the command prompt and type ipconfig and find out your local address (on your pc) it should look something like 192.168.1.13 or 192.168.0.5 where the end digit is the one that changes. It should be next to IPv4 Address.

If your WAMP does not use virtual hosts the next step is to enter that IP address on your phones browser ie http://192.168.1.13 If you have a virtual host then you will need root to edit the hosts file.

If you want to test the responsiveness / mobile design of your website you can change your user agent in chrome or other browsers to mimic a mobile.

See http://googlesystem.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/changing-user-agent-new-google-chrome.html.

Edit: Chrome dev tools now has a mobile debug tool where you can change the size of the viewport, spoof user agents, connections (4G, 3G etc).

If you get forbidden access then see this question WAMP error: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /phpmyadmin/ on this server. Basically, change the occurrances of deny,allow to allow,deny in the httpd.conf file. You can access this by the WAMP menu.

To eliminate possible causes of the issue for now set your config file to

<Directory />
    Options FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride All
    Order allow,deny
    Allow from all
    <RequireAll>
        Require all granted
    </RequireAll>
</Directory>

As thatis working for my windows PC, if you have the directory config block as well change that also to allow all.

Config file that fixed the problem:

https://gist.github.com/samvaughton/6790739

Problem was that the /www apache directory config block still had deny set as default and only allowed from localhost.

Relative frequencies / proportions with dplyr

I wrote a small function for this repeating task:

count_pct <- function(df) {
  return(
    df %>%
      tally %>%
      mutate(n_pct = 100*n/sum(n))
  )
}

I can then use it like:

mtcars %>%
  group_by(cyl) %>%
  count_pct

It returns:

# A tibble: 3 x 3
    cyl     n n_pct
  <dbl> <int> <dbl>
1     4    11  34.4
2     6     7  21.9
3     8    14  43.8

Check existence of directory and create if doesn't exist

As of April 16, 2015, with the release of R 3.2.0 there's a new function called dir.exists(). To use this function and create the directory if it doesn't exist, you can use:

ifelse(!dir.exists(file.path(mainDir, subDir)), dir.create(file.path(mainDir, subDir)), FALSE)

This will return FALSE if the directory already exists or is uncreatable, and TRUE if it didn't exist but was succesfully created.

Note that to simply check if the directory exists you can use

dir.exists(file.path(mainDir, subDir))

Python unexpected EOF while parsing

While @simon's answer is most helpful in Python 2, raw_input is not present in Python 3. I'd suggest doing the following to make sure your code works equally well in Python 2 and Python 3:

First, pip install future:

$ pip install future

Second: import input from future.builtins

# my_file.py
from future.builtins import input
str_value = input('Type something in: ')

And for the specific example listed above:

# example.py
from future.builtins import input
my_date = input("Example: March 21 | What is the date? ")

No operator matches the given name and argument type(s). You might need to add explicit type casts. -- Netbeans, Postgresql 8.4 and Glassfish

This the main error:

ERROR: operator does not exist: integer = character varying

You code is trying to match an integer and a string, that's not going to work. Fix your code, get the query that is involved to see if you fixed it. See also the PostgreSQL log files.

A workaround (NOT A SOLUTION!) is to do some casting. Check this article.

CSS background image alt attribute

Background images sure can present data! In fact, this is often recommended where presenting visual icons is more compact and user-friendly than an equivalent list of text blurbs. Any use of image sprites can benefit from this approach.

It is quite common for hotel listings icons to display amenities. Imagine a page which listed 50 hotel and each hotel had 10 amenities. A CSS Sprite would be perfect for this sort of thing -- better user experience because it's faster. But how do you implement ALT tags for these images? Example site.

The answer is that they don't use alt text at all, but instead use the title attribute on the containing div.

HTML

<div class="hotwire-fitness" title="Fitness Centre"></div>

CSS

.hotwire-fitness {
    float: left;
    margin-right: 5px;
    background: url(/prostyle/images/new_amenities.png) -71px 0;
    width: 21px;
    height: 21px;
}

According to the W3C (see links above), the title attribute serves much of the same purpose as the alt attribute

Title

Values of the title attribute may be rendered by user agents in a variety of ways. For instance, visual browsers frequently display the title as a "tool tip" (a short message that appears when the pointing device pauses over an object). Audio user agents may speak the title information in a similar context. For example, setting the attribute on a link allows user agents (visual and non-visual) to tell users about the nature of the linked resource:

alt

The alt attribute is defined in a set of tags (namely, img, area and optionally for input and applet) to allow you to provide a text equivalent for the object.

A text equivalent brings the following benefits to your website and its visitors in the following common situations:

  • nowadays, Web browsers are available in a very wide variety of platforms with very different capacities; some cannot display images at all or only a restricted set of type of images; some can be configured to not load images. If your code has the alt attribute set in its images, most of these browsers will display the description you gave instead of the images
  • some of your visitors cannot see images, be they blind, color-blind, low-sighted; the alt attribute is of great help for those people that can rely on it to have a good idea of what's on your page
  • search engine bots belong to the two above categories: if you want your website to be indexed as well as it deserves, use the alt attribute to make sure that they won't miss important sections of your pages.

PHP $_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'] vs. $_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'], am I understanding the man pages correctly?

First I want to thank you for all the good answers and explanations. This is the method I created based upon all your answer to get the base url. I only use it in very rare situations. So there is NOT a big focus on security issues, like XSS attacks. Maybe someone needs it.

// Get base url
function getBaseUrl($array=false) {
    $protocol = "";
    $host = "";
    $port = "";
    $dir = "";

    // Get protocol
    if(array_key_exists("HTTPS", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["HTTPS"] != "") {
        if($_SERVER["HTTPS"] == "on") { $protocol = "https"; }
        else { $protocol = "http"; }
    } elseif(array_key_exists("REQUEST_SCHEME", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["REQUEST_SCHEME"] != "") { $protocol = $_SERVER["REQUEST_SCHEME"]; }

    // Get host
    if(array_key_exists("HTTP_X_FORWARDED_HOST", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_HOST"] != "") { $host = trim(end(explode(',', $_SERVER["HTTP_X_FORWARDED_HOST"]))); }
    elseif(array_key_exists("SERVER_NAME", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["SERVER_NAME"] != "") { $host = $_SERVER["SERVER_NAME"]; }
    elseif(array_key_exists("HTTP_HOST", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"] != "") { $host = $_SERVER["HTTP_HOST"]; }
    elseif(array_key_exists("SERVER_ADDR", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["SERVER_ADDR"] != "") { $host = $_SERVER["SERVER_ADDR"]; }
    //elseif(array_key_exists("SSL_TLS_SNI", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["SSL_TLS_SNI"] != "") { $host = $_SERVER["SSL_TLS_SNI"]; }

    // Get port
    if(array_key_exists("SERVER_PORT", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["SERVER_PORT"] != "") { $port = $_SERVER["SERVER_PORT"]; }
    elseif(stripos($host, ":") !== false) { $port = substr($host, (stripos($host, ":")+1)); }
    // Remove port from host
    $host = preg_replace("/:\d+$/", "", $host);

    // Get dir
    if(array_key_exists("SCRIPT_NAME", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["SCRIPT_NAME"] != "") { $dir = $_SERVER["SCRIPT_NAME"]; }
    elseif(array_key_exists("PHP_SELF", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["PHP_SELF"] != "") { $dir = $_SERVER["PHP_SELF"]; }
    elseif(array_key_exists("REQUEST_URI", $_SERVER) && $_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"] != "") { $dir = $_SERVER["REQUEST_URI"]; }
    // Shorten to main dir
    if(stripos($dir, "/") !== false) { $dir = substr($dir, 0, (strripos($dir, "/")+1)); }

    // Create return value
    if(!$array) {
        if($port == "80" || $port == "443" || $port == "") { $port = ""; }
        else { $port = ":".$port; }
        return htmlspecialchars($protocol."://".$host.$port.$dir, ENT_QUOTES);
    } else { return ["protocol" => $protocol, "host" => $host, "port" => $port, "dir" => $dir]; }
}

Gradle, Android and the ANDROID_HOME SDK location

This worked for me (Ubuntu):

Add ANDROID_HOME=/path/to/android-sdk to /etc/environment.

Reboot.

brew install mysql on macOS

The "Base-Path" for Mysql is stored in /etc/my.cnf which is not updated when you do brew upgrade. Just open it and change the basedir value

For example, change this:

[mysqld]
basedir=/Users/3st/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/5.6.13

to point to the new version:

[mysqld]
basedir=/Users/3st/homebrew/Cellar/mysql/5.6.19

Restart mysql with:

mysql.server start

How to reload / refresh model data from the server programmatically?

You're half way there on your own. To implement a refresh, you'd just wrap what you already have in a function on the scope:

function PersonListCtrl($scope, $http) {
  $scope.loadData = function () {
     $http.get('/persons').success(function(data) {
       $scope.persons = data;
     });
  };

  //initial load
  $scope.loadData();
}

then in your markup

<div ng-controller="PersonListCtrl">
    <ul>
        <li ng-repeat="person in persons">
            Name: {{person.name}}, Age {{person.age}}
        </li>
    </ul>
   <button ng-click="loadData()">Refresh</button>
</div>

As far as "accessing your model", all you'd need to do is access that $scope.persons array in your controller:

for example (just puedo code) in your controller:

$scope.addPerson = function() {
     $scope.persons.push({ name: 'Test Monkey' });
};

Then you could use that in your view or whatever you'd want to do.

Shorten string without cutting words in JavaScript

Everyone seems to forget that indexOf takes two arguments- the string to match, and the character index to start looking from. You can break the string at the first space after 10 characters.

function cutString(s, n){
    var cut= s.indexOf(' ', n);
    if(cut== -1) return s;
    return s.substring(0, cut)
}
var s= "this is a long string i cant display";
cutString(s, 10)

/*  returned value: (String)
this is a long

How can a query multiply 2 cell for each row MySQL?

I'm assuming this should work. This will actually put it in the column in your database

If you want to retrieve the 2 values from the database and put your multiplication in the third column of the result only, then

SELECT yt.Pieces, yt.Price, (yt.Pieces * yt.Price) as 'Total' FROM yourTable yt

How do I perform query filtering in django templates

This can be solved with an assignment tag:

from django import template

register = template.Library()

@register.assignment_tag
def query(qs, **kwargs):
    """ template tag which allows queryset filtering. Usage:
          {% query books author=author as mybooks %}
          {% for book in mybooks %}
            ...
          {% endfor %}
    """
    return qs.filter(**kwargs)

How to join (merge) data frames (inner, outer, left, right)

By using the merge function and its optional parameters:

Inner join: merge(df1, df2) will work for these examples because R automatically joins the frames by common variable names, but you would most likely want to specify merge(df1, df2, by = "CustomerId") to make sure that you were matching on only the fields you desired. You can also use the by.x and by.y parameters if the matching variables have different names in the different data frames.

Outer join: merge(x = df1, y = df2, by = "CustomerId", all = TRUE)

Left outer: merge(x = df1, y = df2, by = "CustomerId", all.x = TRUE)

Right outer: merge(x = df1, y = df2, by = "CustomerId", all.y = TRUE)

Cross join: merge(x = df1, y = df2, by = NULL)

Just as with the inner join, you would probably want to explicitly pass "CustomerId" to R as the matching variable. I think it's almost always best to explicitly state the identifiers on which you want to merge; it's safer if the input data.frames change unexpectedly and easier to read later on.

You can merge on multiple columns by giving by a vector, e.g., by = c("CustomerId", "OrderId").

If the column names to merge on are not the same, you can specify, e.g., by.x = "CustomerId_in_df1", by.y = "CustomerId_in_df2" where CustomerId_in_df1 is the name of the column in the first data frame and CustomerId_in_df2 is the name of the column in the second data frame. (These can also be vectors if you need to merge on multiple columns.)

Get raw POST body in Python Flask regardless of Content-Type header

Use request.get_data() to get the raw data, regardless of content type. The data is cached and you can subsequently access request.data, request.json, request.form at will.

If you access request.data first, it will call get_data with an argument to parse form data first. If the request has a form content type (multipart/form-data, application/x-www-form-urlencoded, or application/x-url-encoded) then the raw data will be consumed. request.data and request.json will appear empty in this case.

ExecutorService, how to wait for all tasks to finish

I also have the situation that I have a set of documents to be crawled. I start with an initial "seed" document which should be processed, that document contains links to other documents which should also be processed, and so on.

In my main program, I just want to write something like the following, where Crawler controls a bunch of threads.

Crawler c = new Crawler();
c.schedule(seedDocument);
c.waitUntilCompletion()

The same situation would happen if I wanted to navigate a tree; i would pop in the root node, the processor for each node would add children to the queue as necessary, and a bunch of threads would process all the nodes in the tree, until there were no more.

I couldn't find anything in the JVM which I thought was a bit surprising. So I wrote a class ThreadPool which one can either use directly or subclass to add methods suitable for the domain, e.g. schedule(Document). Hope it helps!

How to upload files to server using Putty (ssh)

You need an scp client. Putty is not one. You can use WinSCP or PSCP. Both are free software.

Active Menu Highlight CSS

First, give all your links a unique id and make a css class called active:

<ul>
    <li><a id="link1" href="#/...">link 1</a></li>
    <li><a id="link2" href="#/...">link 2</a></li>
</ul>

CSS:

.active {
    font-weight: bold;
}

Jquery version:

function setActiveLink(setActive){
    if ($("a").hasClass('active'))
        $("a").removeClass('active');
    if (setActive)
        $("#"+setActive).addClass('active');
}

$(function() {
    $("a").click(function() {
        setActiveLink(this.id);
    });
});

Vanilla javascript version:

In order to prevent selecting too many links with document.querySelectorAll, give the parent element an id called menuLinks. Add an onClick handler on the links.

<ul id="menuLinks">
    <li><a id="link1" href="#/..." onClick="setActiveLink(this.id);">link 1</a></li>
    <li><a id="link2" href="#/..." onClick="setActiveLink(this.id);">link 2</a></li>
</ul>

Code:

function setActiveLink(setActive){
    var links = document.querySelectorAll("#menuLinks a");
    Array.prototype.map.call(links, function(e) {
        e.className = "";
        if (e.id == setActive)
            e.className = "active";
    })
}

C# - Fill a combo box with a DataTable

You need to set the binding context of the ToolStripComboBox.ComboBox.

Here is a slightly modified version of the code that I have just recreated using Visual Studio. The menu item combo box is called toolStripComboBox1 in my case. Note the last line of code to set the binding context.

I noticed that if the combo is in the visible are of the toolstrip, the binding works without this but not when it is in a drop-down. Do you get the same problem?

If you can't get this working, drop me a line via my contact page and I will send you the project. You won't be able to load it using SharpDevelop but will with C# Express.

var languages = new string[2];
languages[0] = "English";
languages[1] = "German";

DataSet myDataSet = new DataSet();

// --- Preparation
DataTable lTable = new DataTable("Lang");
DataColumn lName = new DataColumn("Language", typeof(string));
lTable.Columns.Add(lName);

for (int i = 0; i < languages.Length; i++)
{
    DataRow lLang = lTable.NewRow();
    lLang["Language"] = languages[i];
    lTable.Rows.Add(lLang);
}
myDataSet.Tables.Add(lTable);

toolStripComboBox1.ComboBox.DataSource = myDataSet.Tables["Lang"].DefaultView;
toolStripComboBox1.ComboBox.DisplayMember = "Language";

toolStripComboBox1.ComboBox.BindingContext = this.BindingContext;

What are the most common font-sizes for H1-H6 tags

Headings are normally bold-faced; that has been turned off for this demonstration of size correspondence. MSIE and Opera interpret these sizes the same, but note that Gecko browsers and Chrome interpret Heading 6 as 11 pixels instead of 10 pixels/font size 1, and Heading 3 as 19 pixels instead of 18 pixels/font size 4 (though it's difficult to tell the difference even in a direct comparison and impossible in use). It seems Gecko also limits text to no smaller than 10 pixels.

Angles between two n-dimensional vectors in Python

Using numpy and taking care of BandGap's rounding errors:

from numpy.linalg import norm
from numpy import dot
import math

def angle_between(a,b):
  arccosInput = dot(a,b)/norm(a)/norm(b)
  arccosInput = 1.0 if arccosInput > 1.0 else arccosInput
  arccosInput = -1.0 if arccosInput < -1.0 else arccosInput
  return math.acos(arccosInput)

Note, this function will throw an exception if one of the vectors has zero magnitude (divide by 0).

Linux Shell Script For Each File in a Directory Grab the filename and execute a program

for i in *.xls ; do
  [[ -f "$i" ]] || continue
  xls2csv "$i" "${i%.xls}.csv"
done

The first line in the do checks if the "matching" file really exists, because in case nothing matches in your for, the do will be executed with "*.xls" as $i. This could be horrible for your xls2csv.

Loaded nib but the 'view' outlet was not set

I'd like to second Stephen J. Some times X Code does just get confused. I just had an experience where I had played around with the UI a lot, and had added and deleted outlets quite a few times. The outlets just would not wire-up any more. I never did figure out a specific reason (I had tried all the solutions above), and I just had to delete the NIB and recreate it from scratch, and in fact had to use a different name for the NIB before it would work. (XCode 4.6.1) Wasted a couple of hours on that.

Writing to a file in a for loop

It's preferable to use context managers to close the files automatically

with open("new.txt", "r"), open('xyz.txt', 'w') as textfile, myfile:
    for line in textfile:
        var1, var2 = line.split(",");
        myfile.writelines(var1)

Using BeautifulSoup to extract text without tags

Just loop through all the <strong> tags and use next_sibling to get what you want. Like this:

for strong_tag in soup.find_all('strong'):
    print(strong_tag.text, strong_tag.next_sibling)

Demo:

from bs4 import BeautifulSoup

html = '''
<p>
  <strong class="offender">YOB:</strong> 1987<br />
  <strong class="offender">RACE:</strong> WHITE<br />
  <strong class="offender">GENDER:</strong> FEMALE<br />
  <strong class="offender">HEIGHT:</strong> 5'05''<br />
  <strong class="offender">WEIGHT:</strong> 118<br />
  <strong class="offender">EYE COLOR:</strong> GREEN<br />
  <strong class="offender">HAIR COLOR:</strong> BROWN<br />
</p>
'''

soup = BeautifulSoup(html)

for strong_tag in soup.find_all('strong'):
    print(strong_tag.text, strong_tag.next_sibling)

This gives you:

YOB:  1987
RACE:  WHITE
GENDER:  FEMALE
HEIGHT:  5'05''
WEIGHT:  118
EYE COLOR:  GREEN
HAIR COLOR:  BROWN

Linux bash: Multiple variable assignment

First thing that comes into my mind:

read -r a b c <<<$(echo 1 2 3) ; echo "$a|$b|$c"

output is, unsurprisingly

1|2|3

Flask Download a File

I was also developing a similar application. I was also getting not found error even though the file was there. This solve my problem. I mention my download folder in 'static_folder':

app = Flask(__name__,static_folder='pdf')

My code for the download is as follows:

@app.route('/pdf/<path:filename>', methods=['GET', 'POST'])
def download(filename):
    return send_from_directory(directory='pdf', filename=filename)

This is how I am calling my file from html.

<a class="label label-primary" href=/pdf/{{  post.hashVal }}.pdf target="_blank"  style="margin-right: 5px;">Download pdf </a>
<a class="label label-primary" href=/pdf/{{  post.hashVal }}.png target="_blank"  style="margin-right: 5px;">Download png </a>

C#: How do you edit items and subitems in a listview?

Sorry, don't have enough rep, or would have commented on CraigTP's answer.

I found the solution from the 1st link - C# Editable ListView, quite easy to use. The general idea is to:

  • identify the SubItem that was selected and overlay a TextBox with the SubItem's text over the SubItem
  • give this TextBox focus
  • change SubItem's text to that of TextBox's when TextBox loses focus

What a workaround for a seemingly simple operation :-|

How to annotate MYSQL autoincrement field with JPA annotations

To use a MySQL AUTO_INCREMENT column, you are supposed to use an IDENTITY strategy:

@Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.IDENTITY)
private Long id;

Which is what you'd get when using AUTO with MySQL:

@Id @GeneratedValue(strategy=GenerationType.AUTO)
private Long id;

Which is actually equivalent to

@Id @GeneratedValue
private Long id;

In other words, your mapping should work. But Hibernate should omit the id column in the SQL insert statement, and it is not. There must be a kind of mismatch somewhere.

Did you specify a MySQL dialect in your Hibernate configuration (probably MySQL5InnoDBDialect or MySQL5Dialect depending on the engine you're using)?

Also, who created the table? Can you show the corresponding DDL?

Follow-up: I can't reproduce your problem. Using the code of your entity and your DDL, Hibernate generates the following (expected) SQL with MySQL:

insert
into
    Operator
    (active, password, username)
values
    (?, ?, ?)

Note that the id column is absent from the above statement, as expected.

To sum up, your code, the table definition and the dialect are correct and coherent, it should work. If it doesn't for you, maybe something is out of sync (do a clean build, double check the build directory, etc) or something else is just wrong (check the logs for anything suspicious).

Regarding the dialect, the only difference between MySQL5Dialect or MySQL5InnoDBDialect is that the later adds ENGINE=InnoDB to the table objects when generating the DDL. Using one or the other doesn't change the generated SQL.

What Does This Mean in PHP -> or =>

The double arrow operator, =>, is used as an access mechanism for arrays. This means that what is on the left side of it will have a corresponding value of what is on the right side of it in array context. This can be used to set values of any acceptable type into a corresponding index of an array. The index can be associative (string based) or numeric.

$myArray = array(
    0 => 'Big',
    1 => 'Small',
    2 => 'Up',
    3 => 'Down'
);

The object operator, ->, is used in object scope to access methods and properties of an object. It’s meaning is to say that what is on the right of the operator is a member of the object instantiated into the variable on the left side of the operator. Instantiated is the key term here.

// Create a new instance of MyObject into $obj
$obj = new MyObject();
// Set a property in the $obj object called thisProperty
$obj->thisProperty = 'Fred';
// Call a method of the $obj object named getProperty
$obj->getProperty();

Can ordered list produce result that looks like 1.1, 1.2, 1.3 (instead of just 1, 2, 3, ...) with css?

None of solutions on this page works correctly and universally for all levels and long (wrapped) paragraphs. It’s really tricky to achieve a consistent indentation due to variable size of marker (1., 1.2, 1.10, 1.10.5, …); it can’t be just “faked,” not even with a precomputed margin/padding for each possible indentation level.

I finally figured out a solution that actually works and doesn’t need any JavaScript.

It’s tested on Firefox 32, Chromium 37, IE 9 and Android Browser. Doesn't work on IE 7 and previous.

CSS:

ol {

  counter-reset: item;
  margin: 0;
  padding: 0;
}

ol > li {
  display: table;
  counter-increment: item;
  margin-bottom: 0.6em;
}

ol > li:before {
  content: counters(item, ".") ". ";
  display: table-cell;
  padding-right: 0.6em;
}

li ol > li {
  margin: 0;
}

li ol > li:before {
  content: counters(item, ".") " ";

Persistent invalid graphics state error when using ggplot2

I ran into this same error and solved it by running:

dev.off()

and then running the plot again. I think the graphics device was messed up earlier somehow by exporting some graphics and it didn't get reset. This worked for me and it's simpler than reinstalling ggplot2.

JavaScript calculate the day of the year (1 - 366)

This is a simple way to find the current day in the year, and it should account for leap years without a problem:

Javascript:

Math.round((new Date().setHours(23) - new Date(new Date().getYear()+1900, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0))/1000/60/60/24);

Javascript in Google Apps Script:

Math.round((new Date().setHours(23) - new Date(new Date().getYear(), 0, 1, 0, 0, 0))/1000/60/60/24);

The primary action of this code is to find the number of milliseconds that have elapsed in the current year and then convert this number into days. The number of milliseconds that have elapsed in the current year can be found by subtracting the number of milliseconds of the first second of the first day of the current year, which is obtained with new Date(new Date().getYear()+1900, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0) (Javascript) or new Date(new Date().getYear(), 0, 1, 0, 0, 0) (Google Apps Script), from the milliseconds of the 23rd hour of the current day, which was found with new Date().setHours(23). The purpose of setting the current date to the 23rd hour is to ensure that the day of year is rounded correctly by Math.round().

Once you have the number of milliseconds of the current year, then you can convert this time into days by dividing by 1000 to convert milliseconds to seconds, then dividing by 60 to convert seconds to minutes, then dividing by 60 to convert minutes to hours, and finally dividing by 24 to convert hours to days.

Note: This post was edited to account for differences between JavaScript and JavaScript implemented in Google Apps Script. Also, more context was added for the answer.

Change User Agent in UIWebView

It should work with an NSMutableURLRequest as Kuso has written.

NSMutableURLRequest *urlRequest = [[NSMutableURLRequest alloc] initWithURL: [NSURL URLWithString: @"http://www.google.com/"]];
[urlRequest setValue: @"iPhone" forHTTPHeaderField: @"User-Agent"]; // Or any other User-Agent value.

You'll have to use NSURLConnection to get the responseData. Set the responseData to your UIWebView and the webView should render:

[webView loadData:(NSData *)data MIMEType:(NSString *)MIMEType textEncodingName:(NSString *)encodingName baseURL:(NSURL *)baseURL];

What is the difference between Builder Design pattern and Factory Design pattern?

A factory is simply a wrapper function around a constructor (possibly one in a different class). The key difference is that a factory method pattern requires the entire object to be built in a single method call, with all the parameters passed in on a single line. The final object will be returned.

A builder pattern, on the other hand, is in essence a wrapper object around all the possible parameters you might want to pass into a constructor invocation. This allows you to use setter methods to slowly build up your parameter list. One additional method on a builder class is a build() method, which simply passes the builder object into the desired constructor, and returns the result.

In static languages like Java, this becomes more important when you have more than a handful of (potentially optional) parameters, as it avoids the requirement to have telescopic constructors for all the possible combinations of parameters. Also a builder allows you to use setter methods to define read-only or private fields that cannot be directly modified after the constructor has been called.

Basic Factory Example

// Factory
static class FruitFactory {
    static Fruit create(name, color, firmness) {
        // Additional logic
        return new Fruit(name, color, firmness);
    }
}

// Usage
Fruit fruit = FruitFactory.create("apple", "red", "crunchy");

Basic Builder Example

// Builder
class FruitBuilder {
    String name, color, firmness;
    FruitBuilder setName(name)         { this.name     = name;     return this; }
    FruitBuilder setColor(color)       { this.color    = color;    return this; }
    FruitBuilder setFirmness(firmness) { this.firmness = firmness; return this; }
    Fruit build() {
        return new Fruit(this); // Pass in the builder
    }
}

// Usage
Fruit fruit = new FruitBuilder()
        .setName("apple")
        .setColor("red")
        .setFirmness("crunchy")
        .build();

What's the difference between IFrame and Frame?

The only reasons I can think of are actually in the wiki article you referenced to mention a couple...

"The "Verified by Visa" system has drawn some criticism, since it is hard for users to differentiate between the legitimate Verified by Visa pop-up window or inline frame, and a fraudulent phishing site."

"as of 2008, most web browsers do not provide a simple way to check the security certificate for the contents of an iframe"

If you read the Criticism section in the article it details all the potential security flaws.

Otherwise the only difference is the fact that an IFrame is an inline frame and a Frame is part of a Frameset. Which means more layout problems than anything else!

formGroup expects a FormGroup instance

I was using reactive forms and ran into similar problems. What helped me was to make sure that I set up a corresponding FormGroup in the class. Something like this:

myFormGroup: FormGroup = this.builder.group({
    dob: ['', Validators.required]
});

How to prevent a dialog from closing when a button is clicked

Use a custom layout for your DialogFragment and add a LinearLayout under your content which can be styled as borderless to match Google Material Design. Then find the newly created buttons and override their OnClickListener.

Example:

public class AddTopicFragment extends DialogFragment {

    @Override
    public Dialog onCreateDialog(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        final AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(getActivity());
        // Get the layout inflater
        LayoutInflater inflater = getActivity().getLayoutInflater();
        final View dialogView = inflater.inflate(R.layout.dialog_add_topic, null);

        Button saveTopicDialogButton = (Button) dialogView.findViewById(R.id.saveTopicDialogButton);
        Button cancelSaveTopicDialogButton = (Button) dialogView.findViewById(R.id.cancelSaveTopicDialogButton);

        final AppCompatEditText addTopicNameET = (AppCompatEditText) dialogView.findViewById(R.id.addTopicNameET);
        final AppCompatEditText addTopicCreatedByET = (AppCompatEditText) dialogView.findViewById(R.id.addTopicCreatedByET);

        saveTopicDialogButton.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
            @Override
            public void onClick(View v) {
                // validate inputs
                if(addTopicNameET.getText().toString().trim().isEmpty()){
                    addTopicNameET.setError("Topic name can't be empty");
                    addTopicNameET.requestFocus();
                }else if(addTopicCreatedByET.getText().toString().trim().isEmpty()){
                    addTopicCreatedByET.setError("Topic created by can't be empty");
                    addTopicCreatedByET.requestFocus();
                }else {
                    // save topic to database
                    Topic topic = new Topic();
                    topic.name = addTopicNameET.getText().toString().trim();
                    topic.createdBy = addTopicCreatedByET.getText().toString().trim();
                    topic.createdDate = new Date().getTime();
                    topic.save();

                }

Angular - Can't make ng-repeat orderBy work

in Eike Thies's response above, if we use underscore.js, filter could be simplified to :

var app = angular.module('myApp', []).filter('object2Array', function() {
  return function(input) {
    return _.toArray(input);
  }
});

extracting days from a numpy.timedelta64 value

You can convert it to a timedelta with a day precision. To extract the integer value of days you divide it with a timedelta of one day.

>>> x = np.timedelta64(2069211000000000, 'ns')
>>> days = x.astype('timedelta64[D]')
>>> days / np.timedelta64(1, 'D')
23

Or, as @PhillipCloud suggested, just days.astype(int) since the timedelta is just a 64bit integer that is interpreted in various ways depending on the second parameter you passed in ('D', 'ns', ...).

You can find more about it here.

CSS background image to fit width, height should auto-scale in proportion

I had the same issue, unable to resize the image when adjusting browser dimensions.

Bad Code:

html {
  background-color: white;
  background-image: url("example.png");
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  background-attachment: scroll;
  background-position: 0% 0%;
}

Good Code:

html {
  background-color: white;
  background-image: url("example.png");
  background-repeat: no-repeat;
  background-attachment: scroll;
  background-position: 0% 0%;
  background-size: contain;
}

The key here is the addition of this element -> background-size: contain;

Download file and automatically save it to folder

Well, your solution almost works. There are a few things to take into account to keep it simple:

  • Cancel the default navigation only for specific URLs you know a download will occur, or the user won't be able to navigate anywhere. This means you musn't change your website download URLs.

  • DownloadFileAsync doesn't know the name reported by the server in the Content-Disposition header so you have to specify one, or compute one from the original URL if that's possible. You cannot just specify the folder and expect the file name to be retrieved automatically.

  • You have to handle download server errors from the DownloadCompleted callback because the web browser control won't do it for you anymore.

Sample piece of code, that will download into the directory specified in textBox1, but with a random file name, and without any additional error handling:

private void webBrowser1_Navigating(object sender, WebBrowserNavigatingEventArgs e) {
    /* change this to match your URL. For example, if the URL always is something like "getfile.php?file=xxx", try e.Url.ToString().Contains("getfile.php?") */
    if (e.Url.ToString().EndsWith(".zip")) {
        e.Cancel = true;
        string filePath = Path.Combine(textBox1.Text, Path.GetRandomFileName());
        var client = new WebClient();
        client.DownloadFileCompleted += client_DownloadFileCompleted;
        client.DownloadFileAsync(e.Url, filePath);
    }
}

private void client_DownloadFileCompleted(object sender, AsyncCompletedEventArgs e) {
    MessageBox.Show("File downloaded");
}

This solution should work but can be broken very easily. Try to consider some web service listing the available files for download and make a custom UI for it. It'll be simpler and you will control the whole process.

Converting .NET DateTime to JSON

If you pass a DateTime from a .Net code to a javascript code, C#:

DateTime net_datetime = DateTime.Now;

javascript treats it as a string, like "/Date(1245398693390)/":

You can convert it as fllowing:

// convert the string to date correctly
var d = eval(net_datetime.slice(1, -1))

or:

// convert the string to date correctly
var d = eval("/Date(1245398693390)/".slice(1, -1))

Java: convert List<String> to a String

With java 1.8 stream can be used ,

import java.util.Arrays;
import java.util.List;
import java.util.stream.Collectors;
List<String> list = Arrays.asList("Bill","Bob","Steve").
String str = list.stream().collect(Collectors.joining(" and "));

Simulate user input in bash script

Here is a snippet I wrote; to ask for users' password and set it in /etc/passwd. You can manipulate it a little probably to get what you need:

echo -n " Please enter the password for the given user: "
read userPass
useradd $userAcct && echo -e "$userPass\n$userPass\n" | passwd $userAcct > /dev/null 2>&1 && echo " User account has been created." || echo " ERR -- User account creation failed!"

How to check if pytorch is using the GPU?

After you start running the training loop, if you want to manually watch it from the terminal whether your program is utilizing the GPU resources and to what extent, then you can simply use watch as in:

$ watch -n 2 nvidia-smi

This will continuously update the usage stats for every 2 seconds until you press ctrl+c

If you need more control on more GPU stats you might need, you can use more sophisticated version of nvidia-smi with --query-gpu=.... Below is a simple illustration of this:

$ watch -n 3 nvidia-smi --query-gpu=index,gpu_name,memory.total,memory.used,memory.free,temperature.gpu,pstate,utilization.gpu,utilization.memory --format=csv

which would output the stats something like:

enter image description here

Note: There should not be any space between the comma separated query names in --query-gpu=.... Else those values will be ignored and no stats are returned.

Also, you can check whether your installation of PyTorch detects your CUDA installation correctly by doing:

In [13]: import  torch

In [14]: torch.cuda.is_available()
Out[14]: True

True status means that PyTorch is configured correctly and is using the GPU although you have to move/place the tensors with necessary statements in your code.

If you want to do this inside Python code, then look into this module:

https://github.com/jonsafari/nvidia-ml-py or in pypi here: https://pypi.python.org/pypi/nvidia-ml-py/

ReactJS Two components communicating

This is the way I handled this.
Let's say you have a <select> for Month and a <select> for Day. The number of days depends on the selected month.

Both lists are owned by a third object, the left panel. Both <select> are also children of the leftPanel <div>
It's a game with the callbacks and the handlers in the LeftPanel component.

To test it, just copy the code into two separated files and run the index.html. Then select a month and see how the number of days changes.

    /** @jsx React.DOM */

    var monthsLength = [0,31, 28, 31, 30, 31, 30, 31, 31, 30, 31, 30, 31];

How to read response headers in angularjs?

The response headers in case of cors remain hidden. You need to add in response headers to direct the Angular to expose headers to javascript.

// From server response headers :
header("Access-Control-Allow-Methods: GET, POST, OPTIONS");
header("Access-Control-Allow-Headers: Origin, X-Requested-With,
Content-Type, Accept, Authorization, X-Custom-header");
header("Access-Control-Expose-Headers: X-Custom-header");
header("X-Custom-header: $some data");

var data = res.headers.get('X-Custom-header');

Background service with location listener in android

Very easy no need create class extends LocationListener 1- Variable

private LocationManager mLocationManager;
private LocationListener mLocationListener;
private static double currentLat =0;
private static double currentLon =0;

2- onStartService()

@Override public void onStartService() {
    addListenerLocation();
}

3- Method addListenerLocation()

 private void addListenerLocation() {
    mLocationManager = (LocationManager)
            getSystemService(Context.LOCATION_SERVICE);
    mLocationListener = new LocationListener() {
        @Override

            currentLat = location.getLatitude();
            currentLon = location.getLongitude();

            Toast.makeText(getBaseContext(),currentLat+"-"+currentLon, Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();

        }

        @Override
        public void onStatusChanged(String provider, int status, Bundle extras) {

            if(lastKnownLocation!=null){
                currentLat = lastKnownLocation.getLatitude();
                currentLon = lastKnownLocation.getLongitude();
            }

        }
    };
    mLocationManager.requestLocationUpdates(
            LocationManager.GPS_PROVIDER, 500, 10, mLocationListener);
}

4- onDestroy()

@Override
public void onDestroy() {
    super.onDestroy();
    mLocationManager.removeUpdates(mLocationListener);

Android: making a fullscreen application

just do this in your manifest file in your activity tag

android:theme="@style/Theme.AppCompat.Light.NoActionBar"

How to join components of a path when you are constructing a URL in Python

To improve slightly over Alex Martelli's response, the following will not only cleanup extra slashes but also preserve trailing (ending) slashes, which can sometimes be useful :

>>> items = ["http://www.website.com", "/api", "v2/"]
>>> url = "/".join([(u.strip("/") if index + 1 < len(items) else u.lstrip("/")) for index, u in enumerate(items)])
>>> print(url)
http://www.website.com/api/v2/

It's not as easy to read though, and won't cleanup multiple extra trailing slashes.

I want my android application to be only run in portrait mode?

In the manifest, set this for all your activities:

<activity android:name=".YourActivity"
    android:configChanges="orientation"
    android:screenOrientation="portrait"/>

Let me explain:

  • With android:configChanges="orientation" you tell Android that you will be responsible of the changes of orientation.
  • android:screenOrientation="portrait" you set the default orientation mode.

Backbone.js fetch with parameters

You can also set processData to true:

collection.fetch({
    data: { page: 1 },
    processData: true
});

Jquery will auto process data object into param string,

but in Backbone.sync function, Backbone turn the processData off because Backbone will use other method to process data in POST,UPDATE...

in Backbone source:

if (params.type !== 'GET' && !Backbone.emulateJSON) {
    params.processData = false;
}

Manage toolbar's navigation and back button from fragment in android

Probably the cleanest solution:

abstract class NavigationChildFragment : Fragment() {

    abstract fun onCreateChildView(inflater: LayoutInflater,
                                   container: ViewGroup?,
                                   savedInstanceState: Bundle?): View?

    override fun onCreateView(inflater: LayoutInflater,
                              container: ViewGroup?,
                              savedInstanceState: Bundle?): View? {
        val activity = activity as? MainActivity
        activity?.supportActionBar?.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(true)
        setHasOptionsMenu(true)
        return onCreateChildView(inflater, container, savedInstanceState)
    }

    override fun onDestroyView() {
        val activity = activity as? MainActivity
        activity?.supportActionBar?.setDisplayHomeAsUpEnabled(false)
        setHasOptionsMenu(false)
        super.onDestroyView()
    }

    override fun onOptionsItemSelected(item: MenuItem): Boolean {
        val activity = activity as? MainActivity
        return when (item.itemId) {
            android.R.id.home -> {
                activity?.onBackPressed()
                true
            }
            else              -> super.onOptionsItemSelected(item)
        }
    }
}

Just use this class as parent for all Fragments that should support navigation.

How to locate and insert a value in a text box (input) using Python Selenium?

Assuming your page is available under "http://example.com"

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.common.keys import Keys

driver = webdriver.Firefox()
driver.get("http://example.com")

Select element by id:

inputElement = driver.find_element_by_id("a1")
inputElement.send_keys('1')

Now you can simulate hitting ENTER:

inputElement.send_keys(Keys.ENTER)

or if it is a form you can submit:

inputElement.submit()

What static analysis tools are available for C#?

Have you seen CAT.NET?

From the blurb -

CAT.NET is a binary code analysis tool that helps identify common variants of certain prevailing vulnerabilities that can give rise to common attack vectors such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS), SQL Injection and XPath Injection.

I used an early beta and it did seem to turn up a few things worth looking at.

if (boolean == false) vs. if (!boolean)

Note: With ConcurrentMap you can use the more efficient

values.putIfAbsent(NoteColumns.CREATED_DATE, now);

I prefer the less verbose solution and avoid methods like IsTrue or IsFalse or their like.

Debugging JavaScript in IE7

How to plot a 2D FFT in Matlab?

Assuming that I is your input image and F is its Fourier Transform (i.e. F = fft2(I))

You can use this code:

F = fftshift(F); % Center FFT

F = abs(F); % Get the magnitude
F = log(F+1); % Use log, for perceptual scaling, and +1 since log(0) is undefined
F = mat2gray(F); % Use mat2gray to scale the image between 0 and 1

imshow(F,[]); % Display the result

Show which git tag you are on?

git describe is a porcelain command, which you should avoid:

http://git-blame.blogspot.com/2013/06/checking-current-branch-programatically.html

Instead, I used:

git name-rev --tags --name-only $(git rev-parse HEAD)

String or binary data would be truncated. The statement has been terminated

The maximal length of the target column is shorter than the value you try to insert.

Rightclick the table in SQL manager and go to 'Design' to visualize your table structure and column definitions.

Edit:

Try to set a length on your nvarchar inserts thats the same or shorter than whats defined in your table.

Convert nested Python dict to object?

If your dict is coming from json.loads(), you can turn it into an object instead (rather than a dict) in one line:

import json
from collections import namedtuple

json.loads(data, object_hook=lambda d: namedtuple('X', d.keys())(*d.values()))

What is copy-on-write?

I was going to write up my own explanation but this Wikipedia article pretty much sums it up.

Here is the basic concept:

Copy-on-write (sometimes referred to as "COW") is an optimization strategy used in computer programming. The fundamental idea is that if multiple callers ask for resources which are initially indistinguishable, you can give them pointers to the same resource. This function can be maintained until a caller tries to modify its "copy" of the resource, at which point a true private copy is created to prevent the changes becoming visible to everyone else. All of this happens transparently to the callers. The primary advantage is that if a caller never makes any modifications, no private copy need ever be created.

Also here is an application of a common use of COW:

The COW concept is also used in maintenance of instant snapshot on database servers like Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Instant snapshots preserve a static view of a database by storing a pre-modification copy of data when underlaying data are updated. Instant snapshots are used for testing uses or moment-dependent reports and should not be used to replace backups.

Normalize columns of pandas data frame

Pandas does column wise normalization by default. Try the code below.

X= pd.read_csv('.\\data.csv')
X = (X-X.min())/(X.max()-X.min())

The output values will be in range of 0 and 1.

Is std::vector copying the objects with a push_back?

std::vector always makes a copy of whatever is being stored in the vector.

If you are keeping a vector of pointers, then it will make a copy of the pointer, but not the instance being to which the pointer is pointing. If you are dealing with large objects, you can (and probably should) always use a vector of pointers. Often, using a vector of smart pointers of an appropriate type is good for safety purposes, since handling object lifetime and memory management can be tricky otherwise.

What is causing ImportError: No module named pkg_resources after upgrade of Python on os X?

I encountered with the same problem when i am working on autobahn related project.

1) So I download the setuptools.-0.9.8.tar.gz form https://pypi.python.org/packages/source/s/setuptools/ and extract it.

2 )Then i get the pkg_resources module and copy it to the folder where it needed. **in my case that folder was C:\Python27\Lib\site-packages\autobahn

Find index of last occurrence of a substring in a string

The more_itertools library offers tools for finding indices of all characters or all substrings.

Given

import more_itertools as mit

s = "hello"
pred = lambda x: x == "l"

Code

Characters

Now there is the rlocate tool available:

next(mit.rlocate(s, pred))
# 3

A complementary tool is locate:

list(mit.locate(s, pred))[-1]
# 3

mit.last(mit.locate(s, pred))
# 3

Substrings

There is also a window_size parameter available for locating the leading item of several items:

s = "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"
substring = "chuck"
pred = lambda *args: args == tuple(substring)

next(mit.rlocate(s, pred=pred, window_size=len(substring)))
# 59

What's the pythonic way to use getters and setters?

This is an old question but the topic is very important and always current. In case anyone wants to go beyond simple getters/setters i have wrote an article about superpowered properties in python with support for slots, observability and reduced boilerplate code.

from objects import properties, self_properties

class Car:
    with properties(locals(), 'meta') as meta:

        @meta.prop(read_only=True)
        def brand(self) -> str:
            """Brand"""

        @meta.prop(read_only=True)
        def max_speed(self) -> float:
            """Maximum car speed"""

        @meta.prop(listener='_on_acceleration')
        def speed(self) -> float:
            """Speed of the car"""
            return 0  # Default stopped

        @meta.prop(listener='_on_off_listener')
        def on(self) -> bool:
            """Engine state"""
            return False

    def __init__(self, brand: str, max_speed: float = 200):
        self_properties(self, locals())

    def _on_off_listener(self, prop, old, on):
        if on:
            print(f"{self.brand} Turned on, Runnnnnn")
        else:
            self._speed = 0
            print(f"{self.brand} Turned off.")

    def _on_acceleration(self, prop, old, speed):
        if self.on:
            if speed > self.max_speed:
                print(f"{self.brand} {speed}km/h Bang! Engine exploded!")
                self.on = False
            else:
                print(f"{self.brand} New speed: {speed}km/h")
        else:
            print(f"{self.brand} Car is off, no speed change")

This class can be used like this:

mycar = Car('Ford')

# Car is turned off
for speed in range(0, 300, 50):
    mycar.speed = speed

# Car is turned on
mycar.on = True
for speed in range(0, 350, 50):
    mycar.speed = speed

This code will produce the following output:

Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Car is off, no speed change
Ford Turned on, Runnnnnn
Ford New speed: 0km/h
Ford New speed: 50km/h
Ford New speed: 100km/h
Ford New speed: 150km/h
Ford New speed: 200km/h
Ford 250km/h Bang! Engine exploded!
Ford Turned off.
Ford Car is off, no speed change

Redirecting to another page in ASP.NET MVC using JavaScript/jQuery

// in the HTML code I used some razor
@Html.Hidden("RedirectTo", Url.Action("Action", "Controller"));

Using multiple parameters in URL in express

app.get('/fruit/:fruitName/:fruitColor', function(req, res) {
    var data = {
        "fruit": {
            "apple": req.params.fruitName,
            "color": req.params.fruitColor

});

If that doesn't work, try using console.log(req.params) to see what it is giving you.

How do I shut down a python simpleHTTPserver?

Hitting ctrl + c once(wait for traceback), then hitting ctrl+c again did the trick for me :)

Sending message through WhatsApp

This works to me:

PackageManager pm = context.getPackageManager();
try {
    pm.getPackageInfo("com.whatsapp", PackageManager.GET_ACTIVITIES);
    Intent intent = new Intent();
            intent.setComponent(new ComponentName(packageName,
                    ri.activityInfo.name));
            intent.setType("text/plain");
            intent.putExtra(Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, element);

} catch (NameNotFoundException e) {

Iterate through <select> options

This worked for me

$(function() {

    });
});

Where does VBA Debug.Print log to?

Debug.Print outputs to the "Immediate" window.

Debug.Print outputs to the Immediate window

Also, you can simply type ? and then a statement directly into the immediate window (and then press Enter) and have the output appear right below, like this:

simply type ? and then a statement directly into the immediate window

This can be very handy to quickly output the property of an object...

? myWidget.name

...to set the property of an object...

myWidget.name = "thingy"

...or to even execute a function or line of code, while in debugging mode:

Sheet1.MyFunction()

    background: none;
  }

and look at the effect on the 2nd picture.

Error: allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level

I was having the same issue when I would publish the site, if I build the site I get no issues but while publishing I would get this awful error:

"It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level. This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS"

I tried everything that has been stated here in this post to no resort, what worked for me was to just create a new publish profile with exactly the same as the one I've been using and that works well, don't get the error with the new profile but do with the old. Not sure what the difference is but at least I can publish my MVC project.

Hope this helps somebody!

How can I open a popup window with a fixed size using the HREF tag?

Plain HTML does not support this. You'll need to use some JavaScript code.

Also, note that large parts of the world are using a popup blocker nowadays. You may want to reconsider your design!

Java using scanner enter key pressed

This works using java.util.Scanner and will take multiple "enter" keystrokes:

    Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
    String readString = scanner.nextLine();
    while(readString!=null) {
        System.out.println(readString);

        if (readString.isEmpty()) {
            System.out.println("Read Enter Key.");
        }

        if (scanner.hasNextLine()) {
            readString = scanner.nextLine();
        } else {
            readString = null;
        }
    }

To break it down:

Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);
String readString = scanner.nextLine();

These lines initialize a new Scanner that is reading from the standard input stream (the keyboard) and reads a single line from it.

    while(readString!=null) {
        System.out.println(readString);

While the scanner is still returning non-null data, print each line to the screen.

        if (readString.isEmpty()) {
            System.out.println("Read Enter Key.");
        }

If the "enter" (or return, or whatever) key is supplied by the input, the nextLine() method will return an empty string; by checking to see if the string is empty, we can determine whether that key was pressed. Here the text Read Enter Key is printed, but you could perform whatever action you want here.

        if (scanner.hasNextLine()) {
            readString = scanner.nextLine();
        } else {
            readString = null;
        }

Finally, after printing the content and/or doing something when the "enter" key is pressed, we check to see if the scanner has another line; for the standard input stream, this method will "block" until either the stream is closed, the execution of the program ends, or further input is supplied.

Is it a good practice to place C++ definitions in header files?

Often I'll put trivial member functions into the header file, to allow them to be inlined. But to put the entire body of code there, just to be consistent with templates? That's plain nuts.

Remember: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Looping over a list in Python

Here is the solution I was looking for. If you would like to create List2 that contains the difference of the number elements in List1.

list1 = [12, 15, 22, 54, 21, 68, 9, 73, 81, 34, 45]
list2 = []
for i in range(1, len(list1)):
  change = list1[i] - list1[i-1]
  list2.append(change)

Note that while len(list1) is 11 (elements), len(list2) will only be 10 elements because we are starting our for loop from element with index 1 in list1 not from element with index 0 in list1

Button button = findViewById(R.id.button) always resolves to null in Android Studio

R.id.button is not part of R.layout.activity_main. How should the activity find it in the content view?

The layout that contains the button is displayed by the Fragment, so you have to get the Button there, in the Fragment.

Homebrew refusing to link OpenSSL

The solution above from edwardthesecond worked for me too on Sierra

 brew install openssl
 cd /usr/local/include
 ln -s ../opt/openssl/include/openssl
 ./configure && make

Other steps I did before were:

  • installing openssl via brew

    brew install openssl

  • adding openssl to the path as suggested by homebrew

    brew info openssl
    echo 'export PATH="/usr/local/opt/openssl/bin:$PATH"' >> ~/.bash_profile

Convert a PHP script into a stand-alone windows executable

I had problems with most of the tools in other answers as they are all very outdated.

If you need a solution that will "just work", pack a bare-bones version of php with your project in a WinRar SFX archive, set it to extract everything to a temporary directory and execute php your_script.php.

To run a basic script, the only files required are php.exe and php5.dll (or php5ts.dll depending on version).

To add extensions, pack them along with a php.ini file:

[PHP]
extension_dir = "."
extension=php_curl.dll
extension=php_xxxx.dll
...

MySQL convert date string to Unix timestamp

You will certainly have to use both STR_TO_DATE to convert your date to a MySQL standard date format, and UNIX_TIMESTAMP to get the timestamp from it.

Given the format of your date, something like

UNIX_TIMESTAMP(STR_TO_DATE(Sales.SalesDate, '%M %e %Y %h:%i%p'))

Will gives you a valid timestamp. Look the STR_TO_DATE documentation to have more information on the format string.

How do you install and run Mocha, the Node.js testing module? Getting "mocha: command not found" after install

While installing the node modules for mocha I had tried the below commands

  • npm install
  • npm install mocha
  • npm install --save-dev mocha
  • npm install mocha -g # to install it globally also

and on running or executing the mocha test I was trying

  • mocha test
  • npm run test
  • mocha test test\index.test.js
  • npm test

but I was getting the below error as:

'Mocha' is not recognized as internal or external command

So , after trying everything it came out to be just set the path to environment variables under the System Variables as:

C:\Program Files\nodejs\

and it worked :)

Running multiple commands with xargs

My current BKM for this is

It is unfortunate that this uses perl, which is less likely to be installed than bash; but it handles more input that the accepted answer. (I welcome a ubiquitous version that does not rely on perl.)

@KeithThompson's suggestion of

 ... | xargs -I % sh -c 'command1; command2; ...'

is great - unless you have the shell comment character # in your input, in which case part of the first command and all of the second command will be truncated.

Hashes # can be quite common, if the input is derived from a filesystem listing, such as ls or find, and your editor creates temporary files with # in their name.

Example of the problem:

$ bash 1366 $>  /bin/ls | cat

Get a pixel from HTML Canvas?

Yes sure, provided you have its context. (See how to get canvas context here.)

var imgData = context.getImageData(0,0,canvas.width,canvas.height);
// { data: [r,g,b,a,r,g,b,a,r,g,..], ... }

function getPixel(imgData, index) {
  var i = index*4, d = imgData.data;
  return [d[i],d[i+1],d[i+2],d[i+3]] // Returns array [R,G,B,A]
}

// AND/OR

function getPixelXY(imgData, x, y) {
  return getPixel(imgData, y*imgData.width+x);
}

PS: If you plan to mutate the data and draw them back on the canvas, you can use subarray

var
  idt = imgData, // See previous code snippet
  a = getPixel(idt, 188411), // Array(4) [0, 251, 0, 255]
  b = idt.data.subarray(188411*4, 188411*4 + 4) // Uint8ClampedArray(4) [0, 251, 0, 255]

a[0] = 255 // Does nothing
getPixel(idt, 188411), // Array(4) [0, 251, 0, 255]

b[0] = 255 // Mutates the original imgData.data
getPixel(idt, 188411), // Array(4) [255, 251, 0, 255]

// Or use it in the function
function getPixel(imgData, index) {
  var i = index*4, d = imgData.data;
  return imgData.data.subarray(index, index+4) // Returns subarray [R,G,B,A]
}

You can experiment with this on http://qry.me/xyscope/, the code for this is in the source, just copy/paste it in the console.

Hidden TextArea

An <input type=hidden> element is not a hidden input box. It is simply a form field that has a value set via markup or via scripting, not via user input. You can use it for multi-line data too, e.g.

<input type=hidden name=stuff value=
"Hello
world, how
are you?">

If the value contains the Ascii quotation mark ("), then, as for any HTML attribute, you need to use Ascii apostrophes (') as attribute value delimites or escape the quote as &quot;, e.g.

<input type=hidden name=stuff value="A &quot;funny&quot; example">

Loading and parsing a JSON file with multiple JSON objects

You have a JSON Lines format text file. You need to parse your file line by line:

import json

data = []
with open('file') as f:
    for line in f:
        data.append(json.loads(line))

Each line contains valid JSON, but as a whole, it is not a valid JSON value as there is no top-level list or object definition.

Note that because the file contains JSON per line, you are saved the headaches of trying to parse it all in one go or to figure out a streaming JSON parser. You can now opt to process each line separately before moving on to the next, saving memory in the process. You probably don't want to append each result to one list and then process everything if your file is really big.

If you have a file containing individual JSON objects with delimiters in-between, use How do I use the 'json' module to read in one JSON object at a time? to parse out individual objects using a buffered method.

UnicodeEncodeError: 'ascii' codec can't encode character u'\xe9' in position 7: ordinal not in range(128)

You need to encode Unicode explicitly before writing to a file, otherwise Python does it for you with the default ASCII codec.

Pick an encoding and stick with it:

f.write(printinfo.encode('utf8') + '\n')

or use io.open() to create a file object that'll encode for you as you write to the file:

import io

f = io.open(filename, 'w', encoding='utf8')

Android Support Design TabLayout: Gravity Center and Mode Scrollable

As I didn't find why does this behaviour happen I have used the following code:

float myTabLayoutSize = 360;
if (DeviceInfo.getWidthDP(this) >= myTabLayoutSize ){
    tabLayout.setTabMode(TabLayout.MODE_FIXED);
} else {
    tabLayout.setTabMode(TabLayout.MODE_SCROLLABLE);
}

Basically, I have to calculate manually the width of my tabLayout and then I set the Tab Mode depending on if the tabLayout fits in the device or not.

The reason why I get the size of the layout manually is because not all the tabs have the same width in Scrollable mode, and this could provoke that some names use 2 lines as it happened to me in the example.

Laravel-5 how to populate select box from database with id value and name value

Many has been said already but keep in mind that there are a times where u don't want to output all the records from the database into your select input field ..... Key example I have been working on this school management site where I have to output all the noticeboard categories in a select statement. From my controller this is the code I wrote

Noticeboard:: groupBy()->pluck('category')->get();

This way u get distinct record as they have been grouped so no repetition of records

Regular expression containing one word or another

You just missed an extra pair of brackets for the "OR" symbol. The following should do the trick:

Without those you were either matching a number followed by seconds OR just the word minutes

What is the difference between an interface and abstract class?

The topic of abstract classes vs interfaces is mostly about semantics.

Abstract classes act in different programming languages often as a superset of interfaces, except one thing and that is, that you can implement multiple interfaces, but inherit only one class.

An interface defines what something must be able to do; like a contract, but does not provide an implementation of it.

An abstract class defines what something is and it commonly hosts shared code between the subclasses.

For example a Formatter should be able to format() something. The common semantics to describe something like that would be to create an interface IFormatter with a declaration of format() that acts like a contract. But IFormatter does not describe what something is, but just what it should be able to to. The common semantics to describe what something actually is, is to create a class. In this case we create an abstract class... So we create an abstract class Formatter which implements the interface. That is a very descriptive code, because we now know we have a Formatter and we now know what every Formatter must be able to do.

Also one very important topic is documentation (at least for some people...). In your documentation you probably want to explain within your subclasses what a Formatter actually is. It is very convenient to have an abstract class Formatter to which documentation you can link to within your subclasses. That is very convenient and generic. On the other hand if you do not have an abstract class Formatter and only an interface IFormatter you would have to explain in each of your subclasses what a Formatter actucally is, because an interface is a contract and you would not describe what a Formatter actually is within the documentation of an interface — at least it would be not something common to do and you would break the semantics that most developers consider to be correct.

Note: It is a very common pattern to make an abstract class implement an interface.

C# how to convert File.ReadLines into string array?

File.ReadLines() returns an object of type System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<String>
File.ReadAllLines() returns an array of strings.

If you want to use an array of strings you need to call the correct function.

You could use Jim solution, just use ReadAllLines() or you could change your return type.

This would also work:

System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable<String> lines = File.ReadLines("c:\\file.txt");

You can use any generic collection which implements IEnumerable. IList for an example.

Map enum in JPA with fixed values?

I would do the folowing:

Declare separetly the enum, in it´s own file:

public enum RightEnum {
      READ(100), WRITE(200), EDITOR (300);

      private int value;

      private RightEnum (int value) { this.value = value; }

      @Override
      public static Etapa valueOf(Integer value){
           for( RightEnum r : RightEnum .values() ){
              if ( r.getValue().equals(value))
                 return r;
           }
           return null;//or throw exception
     }

      public int getValue() { return value; }

}

Declare a new JPA entity named Right

@Entity
public class Right{
    @Id
    private Integer id;
    //FIElDS

    // constructor
    public Right(RightEnum rightEnum){
          this.id = rightEnum.getValue();
    }

    public Right getInstance(RightEnum rightEnum){
          return new Right(rightEnum);
    }

}

You will also need a converter for receiving this values (JPA 2.1 only and there´s a problem I´ll not discuss here with these enum´s to be directly persisted using the converter, so it will be a one way road only)

import mypackage.RightEnum;
import javax.persistence.AttributeConverter;
import javax.persistence.Converter;

/**
 *
 *
 */
@Converter(autoApply = true)
public class RightEnumConverter implements AttributeConverter<RightEnum, Integer>{

    @Override //this method shoudn´t be used, but I implemented anyway, just in case
    public Integer convertToDatabaseColumn(RightEnum attribute) {
        return attribute.getValue();
    }

    @Override
    public RightEnum convertToEntityAttribute(Integer dbData) {
        return RightEnum.valueOf(dbData);
    }

}

The Authority entity:

@Entity
@Table(name = "AUTHORITY_")
public class Authority implements Serializable {

  @Id
  @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO)
  @Column(name = "AUTHORITY_ID")
  private Long id;

  // the **Entity** to map :
  private Right right;

  // the **Enum** to map (not to be persisted or updated) :
  @Column(name="COLUMN1", insertable = false, updatable = false)
  @Convert(converter = RightEnumConverter.class)
  private RightEnum rightEnum;

}

By doing this way, you can´t set directly to the enum field. However, you can set the Right field in Authority using

autorithy.setRight( Right.getInstance( RightEnum.READ ) );//for example

And if you need to compare, you can use:

authority.getRight().equals( RightEnum.READ ); //for example

Which is pretty cool, I think. It´s not totally correct, since the converter it´s not intended to be use with enum´s. Actually, the documentation says to never use it for this purpose, you should use the @Enumerated annotation instead. The problem is that there are only two enum types: ORDINAL or STRING, but the ORDINAL is tricky and not safe.

However, if it doesn´t satisfy you, you can do something a little more hacky and simpler (or not).

Let´s see.

The RightEnum:

public enum RightEnum {
      READ(100), WRITE(200), EDITOR (300);

      private int value;

      private RightEnum (int value) {
            try {
                  this.value= value;
                  final Field field = this.getClass().getSuperclass().getDeclaredField("ordinal");
                  field.setAccessible(true);
                  field.set(this, value);
             } catch (Exception e) {//or use more multicatch if you use JDK 1.7+
                  throw new RuntimeException(e);
            }
      }

      @Override
      public static Etapa valueOf(Integer value){
           for( RightEnum r : RightEnum .values() ){
              if ( r.getValue().equals(value))
                 return r;
           }
           return null;//or throw exception
     }

      public int getValue() { return value; }

}

and the Authority entity

@Entity
@Table(name = "AUTHORITY_")
public class Authority implements Serializable {

  @Id
  @GeneratedValue(strategy = GenerationType.AUTO)
  @Column(name = "AUTHORITY_ID")
  private Long id;

  // the **Enum** to map (to be persisted or updated) :
  @Column(name="COLUMN1")
  @Enumerated(EnumType.ORDINAL)
  private RightEnum rightEnum;

}

In this second idea, its not a perfect situation since we hack the ordinal attribute, but it´s a much smaller coding.

I think that the JPA specification should include the EnumType.ID where the enum value field should be annotated with some kind of @EnumId annotation.

PHP to search within txt file and echo the whole line

Using file() and strpos():

<?php
// What to look for
$search = 'foo';
// Read from file
$lines = file('file.txt');
foreach($lines as $line)
{
  // Check if the line contains the string we're looking for, and print if it does
  if(strpos($line, $search) !== false)
    echo $line;
}

When tested on this file:

foozah
barzah
abczah

It outputs:

foozah

Update:
To show text if the text is not found, use something like this:

<?php
$search = 'foo';
$lines = file('file.txt');
// Store true when the text is found
$found = false;
foreach($lines as $line)
{
  if(strpos($line, $search) !== false)
  {
    $found = true;
    echo $line;
  }
}
// If the text was not found, show a message
if(!$found)
{
  echo 'No match found';
}

Here I'm using the $found variable to find out if a match was found.

How do I set the size of an HTML text box?

How can I edit javascript in my browser like I can use Firebug to edit CSS/HTML?

I would still recommend Firebug. Not only it can debug JS within your JSP files, it can enhance debugging experience with addons like JS Deminifier (if your production JS is minified), FireQuery, FireRainbow and more.

There is also Firebug lite which is nothing but a bookmarklet. It lets you do limited things but still is useful.

Chrome as a developer console built-in that would let you modify javascript.

Using these tools, you should be able to inject your own JS too.

What processes are using which ports on unix?

netstat -ln | awk '/^(tcp|udp)/ { split($4, a, /:/); print $1, a[2]}' | sort -u

gives you the active tcp/udp ports. Then you can use the ports with fuser -n tcp or fuser -n udp, as root, and supposing that fuser is GNU fuser or has similar options.

Make a VStack fill the width of the screen in SwiftUI

An alternative stacking arrangement which works and is perhaps a bit more intuitive is the following:

struct ContentView: View {
    var body: some View {
        HStack() {
            VStack(alignment: .leading) {
                Text("Hello World")
                    .font(.title)
                Text("Another")
                    .font(.body)
                Spacer()
            }
            Spacer()
        }.background(Color.red)
    }
}

The content can also easily be re-positioned by removing the Spacer()'s if necessary.

How to reload/refresh jQuery dataTable?

Very Simple answer

$("#table_name").DataTable().ajax.reload(null, false);

Update one MySQL table with values from another

UPDATE tobeupdated
INNER JOIN original ON (tobeupdated.value = original.value)
SET tobeupdated.id = original.id

That should do it, and really its doing exactly what yours is. However, I prefer 'JOIN' syntax for joins rather than multiple 'WHERE' conditions, I think its easier to read

As for running slow, how large are the tables? You should have indexes on tobeupdated.value and original.value

EDIT: we can also simplify the query

UPDATE tobeupdated
INNER JOIN original USING (value)
SET tobeupdated.id = original.id

USING is shorthand when both tables of a join have an identical named key such as id. ie an equi-join - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Join_(SQL)#Equi-join

Getting results between two dates in PostgreSQL

 SELECT *
   FROM mytable
  WHERE (start_date, end_date) OVERLAPS ('2012-01-01'::DATE, '2012-04-12'::DATE);

Datetime functions is the relevant section in the docs.

Is there any JSON Web Token (JWT) example in C#?

I've never used it but there is a JWT implementation on NuGet.

Package: https://nuget.org/packages/JWT

Source: https://github.com/johnsheehan/jwt

.NET 4.0 compatible: https://www.nuget.org/packages/jose-jwt/

You can also go here: https://jwt.io/ and click "libraries".

How to change the background colour's opacity in CSS

Use RGB values combined with opacity to get the transparency that you wish.

For instance,

<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 0.2;">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 0.4;">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 0.6;">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 0.8;">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 1;">&nbsp;</div>

Similarly, with actual values without opacity, will give the below.

<div style=" background: rgb(243, 191, 189) ; ">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(246, 143, 142) ; ">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(249, 95 , 94)  ; ">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(252, 47, 47)   ; ">&nbsp;</div>
<div style=" background: rgb(255, 0, 0)     ; ">&nbsp;</div>

You can have a look at this WORKING EXAMPLE.

Now, if we specifically target your issue, here is the WORKING DEMO SPECIFIC TO YOUR ISSUE.

The HTML

<div class="social">
    <img src="http://www.google.co.in/images/srpr/logo4w.png" border="0" />
</div>

The CSS:

social img{
    opacity:0.5;
}
.social img:hover {
    opacity:1;
    background-color:black;
    cursor:pointer;
    background: rgb(255, 0, 0) ; opacity: 0.5;
}

Hope this helps Now.

SQL Server 2008 - IF NOT EXISTS INSERT ELSE UPDATE

As others have suggested that you should look into MERGE statement but nobody provided a solution using it I'm adding my own answer with this particular TSQL construct. I bet you'll like it.

Important note

Your code has a typo in your if statement in not exists(select...) part. Inner select statement has only one where condition while UserName condition is excluded from the not exists due to invalid brace completion. In any case you cave too many closing braces.

I assume this based on the fact that you're using two where conditions in update statement later on in your code.

Let's continue to my answer...

SQL Server 2008+ support MERGE statement

MERGE statement is a beautiful TSQL gem very well suited for "insert or update" situations. In your case it would look similar to the following code. Take into consideration that I'm declaring variables what are likely stored procedure parameters (I suspect).

declare @clockDate date = '08/10/2012';
declare @userName = 'test';

merge Clock as target
using (select @clockDate, @userName) as source (ClockDate, UserName)
on (target.ClockDate = source.ClockDate and target.UserName = source.UserName)
when matched then
    update
    set BreakOut = getdate()
when not matched then
    insert (ClockDate, UserName, BreakOut)
    values (getdate(), source.UserName, getdate());

How do I reload a page without a POSTDATA warning in Javascript?

Where does MySQL store database files on Windows and what are the names of the files?

C:\Program Files\MySQL\MySQL Workbench 6.3 CE\sys

paste URLin to window file, and get Tables, Procedures, Functions from this directory

jQuery - Getting form values for ajax POST

var data={
 userName: $('#userName').val(),
 email: $('#email').val(),
 //add other properties similarly
}

and

$.ajax({
        type: "POST",
        url: "http://rt.ja.com/includes/register.php?submit=1",
        data: data

        success: function(html)
        {
            //alert(html);
            $('#userError').html(html);
            $("#userError").html(userChar);
            $("#userError").html(userTaken);
        }
    });

You dont have to bother about anything else. jquery will handle the serialization etc. also you can append the submit query string parameter submit=1 into the data json object.
