UIViewController viewDidLoad vs. viewWillAppear: What is the proper division of labor?

It's important to note that using viewDidLoad for positioning is a bit risky and should be avoided since the bounds are not set. this may cause unexpected results (I had a variety of issues...)

This post describes quite well the different methods and what happens in each of them.

currently for one-time init and positioning I'm thinking of using viewDidAppear with a flag, if anyone has any other recommendation please let me know.

Can we update primary key values of a table?

It is commonly agreed that primary keys should be immutable (or as stable as possible since immutability can not be enforced in the DB). While there is nothing that will prevent you from updating a primary key (except integrity constraint), it may not be a good idea:

From a performance point of view:

  • You will need to update all foreign keys that reference the updated key. A single update can lead to the update of potentially lots of tables/rows.
  • If the foreign keys are unindexed (!!) you will have to maintain a lock on the children table to ensure integrity. Oracle will only hold the lock for a short time but still, this is scary.
  • If your foreign keys are indexed (as they should be), the update will lead to the update of the index (delete+insert in the index structure), this is generally more expensive than the actual update of the base table.
  • In ORGANIZATION INDEX tables (in other RDBMS, see clustered primary key), the rows are physically sorted by the primary key. A logical update will result in a physical delete+insert (more expensive)

Other considerations:

  • If this key is referenced in any external system (application cache, another DB, export...), the reference will be broken upon update.
  • additionaly, some RDBMS don't support CASCADE UPDATE, in particular Oracle.

In conclusion, during design, it is generally safer to use a surrogate key in lieu of a natural primary key that is supposed not to change -- but may eventually need to be updated because of changed requirements or even data entry error.

If you absolutely have to update a primary key with children table, see this post by Tom Kyte for a solution.

What is the difference between .py and .pyc files?

.pyc contain the compiled bytecode of Python source files. The Python interpreter loads .pyc files before .py files, so if they're present, it can save some time by not having to re-compile the Python source code. You can get rid of them if you want, but they don't cause problems, they're not big, and they may save some time when running programs.

How can I change the color of AlertDialog title and the color of the line under it

By following the Dialog source code, I found that Title is generated in Class MidWindow by inflating the dialog_title_holo.xml layout. so the Id of mTitleView is title and the Id of divider is titleDivider.

we can access to Id of title simply by android.R.id.title.

and access to Id of titleDivider by Resources.getSystem().getIdentifier("titleDivider","id", "android");

The final code that i used to change the Direction of title and changing color is:

TextView mTitle = (TextView)findViewById(android.R.id.title);
mTitle.setGravity(Gravity.RIGHT|Gravity.CENTER_VERTICAL);
int x = Resources.getSystem().getIdentifier("titleDivider","id", "android");
View titleDivider = findViewById(x);
titleDivider.setBackgroundColor(getContext().getResources().getColor(R.color.some_color));

When should I use Async Controllers in ASP.NET MVC?

You may find my MSDN article on the subject helpful; I took a lot of space in that article describing when you should use async on ASP.NET, not just how to use async on ASP.NET.

I have some concerns using async actions in ASP.NET MVC. When it improves performance of my apps, and when - not.

First, understand that async/await is all about freeing up threads. On GUI applications, it's mainly about freeing up the GUI thread so the user experience is better. On server applications (including ASP.NET MVC), it's mainly about freeing up the request thread so the server can scale.

In particular, it won't:

  • Make your individual requests complete faster. In fact, they will complete (just a teensy bit) slower.
  • Return to the caller/browser when you hit an await. await only "yields" to the ASP.NET thread pool, not to the browser.

First question is - is it good to use async action everywhere in ASP.NET MVC?

I'd say it's good to use it everywhere you're doing I/O. It may not necessarily be beneficial, though (see below).

However, it's bad to use it for CPU-bound methods. Sometimes devs think they can get the benefits of async by just calling Task.Run in their controllers, and this is a horrible idea. Because that code ends up freeing up the request thread by taking up another thread, so there's no benefit at all (and in fact, they're taking the penalty of extra thread switches)!

Shall I use async/await keywords when I want to query database (via EF/NHibernate/other ORM)?

You could use whatever awaitable methods you have available. Right now most of the major players support async, but there are a few that don't. If your ORM doesn't support async, then don't try to wrap it in Task.Run or anything like that (see above).

Note that I said "you could use". If you're talking about ASP.NET MVC with a single database backend, then you're (almost certainly) not going to get any scalability benefit from async. This is because IIS can handle far more concurrent requests than a single instance of SQL server (or other classic RDBMS). However, if your backend is more modern - a SQL server cluster, Azure SQL, NoSQL, etc - and your backend can scale, and your scalability bottleneck is IIS, then you can get a scalability benefit from async.

Third question - How many times I can use await keywords to query database asynchronously in ONE single action method?

As many as you like. However, note that many ORMs have a one-operation-per-connection rule. In particular, EF only allows a single operation per DbContext; this is true whether the operation is synchronous or asynchronous.

Also, keep in mind the scalability of your backend again. If you're hitting a single instance of SQL Server, and your IIS is already capable of keeping SQLServer at full capacity, then doubling or tripling the pressure on SQLServer is not going to help you at all.

Cut Java String at a number of character

Use substring

String strOut = "abcdefghijklmnopqrtuvwxyz"
String result = strOut.substring(0, 8) + "...";// count start in 0 and 8 is excluded
System.out.pritnln(result);

Note: substring(int first, int second) takes two parameters. The first is inclusive and the second is exclusive.

MySQL - sum column value(s) based on row from the same table

I think you're making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be.

    SUM(IF(PaymentMethod = 'Cash', Amount, 0)) AS 'Cash',
    -- snip
    SUM(Amount) AS Total

differences in application/json and application/x-www-form-urlencoded

webRequest.ContentType = "application/x-www-form-urlencoded";

  1. Where does application/x-www-form-urlencoded's name come from?

    If you send HTTP GET request, you can use query parameters as follows:

    http://example.com/path/to/page?name=ferret&color=purple

    The content of the fields is encoded as a query string. The application/x-www-form- urlencoded's name come from the previous url query parameter but the query parameters is in where the body of request instead of url.

    The whole form data is sent as a long query string.The query string contains name- value pairs separated by & character

    e.g. field1=value1&field2=value2

  2. It can be simple request called simple - don't trigger a preflight check

    Simple request must have some properties. You can look here for more info. One of them is that there are only three values allowed for Content-Type header for simple requests

    • application/x-www-form-urlencoded
    • multipart/form-data
    • text/plain

3.For mostly flat param trees, application/x-www-form-urlencoded is tried and tested.

request.ContentType = "application/json; charset=utf-8";

  1. The data will be json format.

axios and superagent, two of the more popular npm HTTP libraries, work with JSON bodies by default.

{
  "id": 1,
  "name": "Foo",
  "price": 123,
  "tags": [
    "Bar",
    "Eek"
  ],
  "stock": {
    "warehouse": 300,
    "retail": 20
  }
}
  1. "application/json" Content-Type is one of the Preflighted requests.

Now, if the request isn't simple request, the browser automatically sends a HTTP request before the original one by OPTIONS method to check whether it is safe to send the original request. If itis ok, Then send actual request. You can look here for more info.

  1. application/json is beginner-friendly. URL encoded arrays can be a nightmare!

How can I generate a random number in a certain range?

To extend what Rahul Gupta said:

You can use Java function int random = Random.nextInt(n).
This returns a random int in the range [0, n-1].

I.e., to get the range [20, 80] use:

final int random = new Random().nextInt(61) + 20; // [0, 60] + 20 => [20, 80]

To generalize more:

final int min = 20;
final int max = 80;
final int random = new Random().nextInt((max - min) + 1) + min;

How can I delete using INNER JOIN with SQL Server?

Another way is using CTE:

;WITH cte
     AS (SELECT *
         FROM   workrecord2 w
         WHERE  EXISTS (SELECT 1
                        FROM   employee e
                        WHERE  employeerun = employeeno
                               AND company = '1'
                               AND date = '2013-05-06'))
DELETE FROM cte

Note: We cannot use JOIN inside CTE when you want to delete.

How to group by month from Date field using sql

Try this:

`React/RCTBridgeModule.h` file not found

What you can do to get it right is:

1) npm uninstall reat-native-fs to uninstall library

2)npm unlink react-native-fs to unlink the library

Now the library is successfully removed and now install the lib again in your project and this time link everything manually. Sometime automatic linking causes this error.

Interface naming in Java

Is this a broader naming convention in any real sense? I'm more on the C++ side, and not really up on Java and descendants. How many language communities use the I convention?

If you have a language-independent shop standard naming convention here, use it. If not, go with the language naming convention.

os.walk without digging into directories below

There is a catch when using listdir. The os.path.isdir(identifier) must be an absolute path. To pick subdirectories you do:

for dirname in os.listdir(rootdir):
  if os.path.isdir(os.path.join(rootdir, dirname)):
     print("I got a subdirectory: %s" % dirname)

The alternative is to change to the directory to do the testing without the os.path.join().

Where could I buy a valid SSL certificate?

Let's Encrypt is a free, automated, and open certificate authority made by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG). It is sponsored by well-known organisations such as Mozilla, Cisco or Google Chrome. All modern browsers are compatible and trust Let's Encrypt.

All certificates are free (even wildcard certificates)! For security reasons, the certificates expire pretty fast (after 90 days). For this reason, it is recommended to install an ACME client, which will handle automatic certificate renewal.

There are many clients you can use to install a Let's Encrypt certificate:

Let’s Encrypt uses the ACME protocol to verify that you control a given domain name and to issue you a certificate. To get a Let’s Encrypt certificate, you’ll need to choose a piece of ACME client software to use. - https://letsencrypt.org/docs/client-options/

What is the best way to remove accents (normalize) in a Python unicode string?

Unidecode is the correct answer for this. It transliterates any unicode string into the closest possible representation in ascii text.

Example:

accented_string = u'Málaga'
# accented_string is of type 'unicode'
import unidecode
unaccented_string = unidecode.unidecode(accented_string)
# unaccented_string contains 'Malaga'and is of type 'str'

How to get complete current url for Cakephp

You can do either

From a view file:

<?php echo $this->request->here() ?>">

Which will give you the absolute url from the hostname i.e. /controller/action/params

Or

<?php echo Router::url(null, true) ?>

which should give you the full url with the hostname.

Delete terminal history in Linux

If you use bash, then the terminal history is saved in a file called .bash_history. Delete it, and history will be gone.

However, for MySQL the better approach is not to enter the password in the command line. If you just specify the -p option, without a value, then you will be prompted for the password and it won't be logged.

Another option, if you don't want to enter your password every time, is to store it in a my.cnf file. Create a file named ~/.my.cnf with something like:

[client]
user = <username>
password = <password>

Make sure to change the file permissions so that only you can read the file.

Of course, this way your password is still saved in a plaintext file in your home directory, just like it was previously saved in .bash_history.

Creating a custom JButton in Java

Yes, this is possible. One of the main pros for using Swing is the ease with which the abstract controls can be created and manipulates.

Here is a quick and dirty way to extend the existing JButton class to draw a circle to the right of the text.

package test;

import java.awt.Color;
import java.awt.Container;
import java.awt.Dimension;
import java.awt.FlowLayout;
import java.awt.Graphics;

import javax.swing.JButton;
import javax.swing.JFrame;

public class MyButton extends JButton {

    private static final long serialVersionUID = 1L;

    private Color circleColor = Color.BLACK;

    public MyButton(String label) {
        super(label);
    }

    @Override
    protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
        super.paintComponent(g);

        Dimension originalSize = super.getPreferredSize();
        int gap = (int) (originalSize.height * 0.2);
        int x = originalSize.width + gap;
        int y = gap;
        int diameter = originalSize.height - (gap * 2);

        g.setColor(circleColor);
        g.fillOval(x, y, diameter, diameter);
    }

    @Override
    public Dimension getPreferredSize() {
        Dimension size = super.getPreferredSize();
        size.width += size.height;
        return size;
    }

    /*Test the button*/
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        MyButton button = new MyButton("Hello, World!");

        JFrame frame = new JFrame();
        frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
        frame.setSize(400, 400);

        Container contentPane = frame.getContentPane();
        contentPane.setLayout(new FlowLayout());
        contentPane.add(button);

        frame.setVisible(true);
    }

}

Note that by overriding paintComponent that the contents of the button can be changed, but that the border is painted by the paintBorder method. The getPreferredSize method also needs to be managed in order to dynamically support changes to the content. Care needs to be taken when measuring font metrics and image dimensions.

For creating a control that you can rely on, the above code is not the correct approach. Dimensions and colours are dynamic in Swing and are dependent on the look and feel being used. Even the default Metal look has changed across JRE versions. It would be better to implement AbstractButton and conform to the guidelines set out by the Swing API. A good starting point is to look at the javax.swing.LookAndFeel and javax.swing.UIManager classes.

Design DFA accepting binary strings divisible by a number 'n'

I know I am quite late, but I just wanted to add a few things to the already correct answer provided by @Grijesh. I'd like to just point out that the answer provided by @Grijesh does not produce the minimal DFA. While the answer surely is the right way to get a DFA, if you need the minimal DFA you will have to look into your divisor.

Like for example in binary numbers, if the divisor is a power of 2 (i.e. 2^n) then the minimum number of states required will be n+1. How would you design such an automaton? Just see the properties of binary numbers. For a number, say 8 (which is 2^3), all its multiples will have the last 3 bits as 0. For example, 40 in binary is 101000. Therefore for a language to accept any number divisible by 8 we just need an automaton which sees if the last 3 bits are 0, which we can do in just 4 states instead of 8 states. That's half the complexity of the machine.

In fact, this can be extended to any base. For a ternary base number system, if for example we need to design an automaton for divisibility with 9, we just need to see if the last 2 numbers of the input are 0. Which can again be done in just 3 states.

Although if the divisor isn't so special, then we need to go through with @Grijesh's answer only. Like for example, in a binary system if we take the divisors of 3 or 7 or maybe 21, we will need to have that many number of states only. So for any odd number n in a binary system, we need n states to define the language which accepts all multiples of n. On the other hand, if the number is even but not a power of 2 (only in case of binary numbers) then we need to divide the number by 2 till we get an odd number and then we can find the minimum number of states by adding the odd number produced and the number of times we divided by 2.

For example, if we need to find the minimum number of states of a DFA which accepts all binary numbers divisible by 20, we do :

20/2 = 10
10/2 = 5

Hence our answer is 5 + 1 + 1 = 7. (The 1 + 1 because we divided the number 20 twice).

Named tuple and default values for optional keyword arguments

I find this version easier to read:

from collections import namedtuple

def my_tuple(**kwargs):
    defaults = {
        'a': 2.0,
        'b': True,
        'c': "hello",
    }
    default_tuple = namedtuple('MY_TUPLE', ' '.join(defaults.keys()))(*defaults.values())
    return default_tuple._replace(**kwargs)

This is not as efficient as it requires creation of the object twice but you could change that by defining the default duple inside the module and just having the function do the replace line.

How do AX, AH, AL map onto EAX?

No, that's not quite right.

EAX is the full 32-bit value
AX is the lower 16-bits
AL is the lower 8 bits
AH is the bits 8 through 15 (zero-based)

So AX is composed of AH:AL halves, and is itself the low half of EAX. (The upper half of EAX isn't directly accessible as a 16-bit register; you can shift or rotate EAX if you want to get at it.)

For completeness, in addition to the above, which was based on a 32-bit CPU, 64-bit Intel/AMD CPUs have

RAX, which hold a 64-bit value, and where EAX is mapped to the lower 32 bits.

All of this also applies to EBX/RBX, ECX/RCX, and EDX/RDX. The other registers like EDI/RDI have a DI low 16-bit partial register, but no high-8 part, and the low-8 DIL is only accessible in 64-bit mode: Assembly registers in 64-bit architecture

Writing AL, AH, or AX merges into the full AX/EAX/RAX, leaving other bytes unmodified for historical reasons. (In 32 or 64-bit code, prefer a movzx eax, byte [mem] or movzx eax, word [mem] load if you don't specifically want this merging: Why doesn't GCC use partial registers?)

Writing EAX zero-extends into RAX. (Why do x86-64 instructions on 32-bit registers zero the upper part of the full 64-bit register?)

In Javascript, how to conditionally add a member to an object?

If you wish to do this server side (without jquery), you can use lodash 4.3.0:

a = _.pickBy({ b: (someCondition? 5 : undefined) }, _.negate(_.isUndefined));

And this works using lodash 3.10.1

a = _.pick({ b: (someCondition? 5 : undefined) }, _.negate(_.isUndefined));

sendmail: how to configure sendmail on ubuntu?

When you typed in sudo sendmailconfig, you should have been prompted to configure sendmail.

For reference, the files that are updated during configuration are located at the following (in case you want to update them manually):

/etc/mail/sendmail.conf
/etc/cron.d/sendmail
/etc/mail/sendmail.mc

You can test sendmail to see if it is properly configured and setup by typing the following into the command line:

$ echo "My test email being sent from sendmail" | /usr/sbin/sendmail [email protected]

The following will allow you to add smtp relay to sendmail:

#Change to your mail config directory:
cd /etc/mail

#Make a auth subdirectory
mkdir auth
chmod 700 auth

#Create a file with your auth information to the smtp server
cd auth
touch client-info

#In the file, put the following, matching up to your smtp server:
AuthInfo:your.isp.net "U:root" "I:user" "P:password"

#Generate the Authentication database, make both files readable only by root
makemap hash client-info < client-info
chmod 600 client-info
cd ..

Add the following lines to sendmail.mc, but before the MAILERDEFINITIONS. Make sure you update your smtp server.

define(`SMART_HOST',`your.isp.net')dnl
define(`confAUTH_MECHANISMS', `EXTERNAL GSSAPI DIGEST-MD5 CRAM-MD5 LOGIN PLAIN')dnl
FEATURE(`authinfo',`hash -o /etc/mail/auth/client-info.db')dnl

Is the size of C "int" 2 bytes or 4 bytes?

There's no specific answer. It depends on the platform. It is implementation-defined. It can be 2, 4 or something else.

The idea behind int was that it was supposed to match the natural "word" size on the given platform: 16 bit on 16-bit platforms, 32 bit on 32-bit platforms, 64 bit on 64-bit platforms, you get the idea. However, for backward compatibility purposes some compilers prefer to stick to 32-bit int even on 64-bit platforms.

The time of 2-byte int is long gone though (16-bit platforms?) unless you are using some embedded platform with 16-bit word size. Your textbooks are probably very old.

Bold & Non-Bold Text In A Single UILabel?

To make text bold as well as underline in a UILabel. Just add the following lines in your code.

NSRange range1 = [lblTermsAndCondition.text rangeOfString:NSLocalizedString(@"bold_terms", @"")];
NSRange range2 = [lblTermsAndCondition.text rangeOfString:NSLocalizedString(@"bold_policy", @"")];
NSMutableAttributedString *attributedText = [[NSMutableAttributedString alloc] initWithString:lblTermsAndCondition.text];
[attributedText setAttributes:@{NSFontAttributeName:[UIFont fontWithName:fontBold size:12.0]}
                        range:range1];
[attributedText setAttributes:@{NSFontAttributeName:[UIFont fontWithName:fontBold size:12.0]}
                        range:range2];

[attributedText addAttribute:(NSString*)kCTUnderlineStyleAttributeName
                  value:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kCTUnderlineStyleSingle]
                  range:range1];

[attributedText addAttribute:(NSString*)kCTUnderlineStyleAttributeName
                       value:[NSNumber numberWithInt:kCTUnderlineStyleSingle]
                       range:range2];

lblTermsAndCondition.attributedText = attributedText;

How to convert an OrderedDict into a regular dict in python3

If somehow you want a simple, yet different solution, you can use the {**dict} syntax:

from collections import OrderedDict

ordered = OrderedDict([('method', 'constant'), ('data', '1.225')])
regular = {**ordered}

Get current NSDate in timestamp format

Here's what I use:

NSString * timestamp = [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%f",[[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970] * 1000];

(times 1000 for milliseconds, otherwise, take that out)

If You're using it all the time, it might be nice to declare a macro

#define TimeStamp [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%f",[[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970] * 1000]

Then Call it like this:

NSString * timestamp = TimeStamp;

Or as a method:

- (NSString *) timeStamp {
    return [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%f",[[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970] * 1000];
}

As TimeInterval

- (NSTimeInterval) timeStamp {
    return [[NSDate date] timeIntervalSince1970] * 1000;
}

NOTE:

The 1000 is to convert the timestamp to milliseconds. You can remove this if you prefer your timeInterval in seconds.

Swift

If you'd like a global variable in Swift, you could use this:

var Timestamp: String {
    return "\(NSDate().timeIntervalSince1970 * 1000)"
}

Then, you can call it

println("Timestamp: \(Timestamp)")

Again, the *1000 is for miliseconds, if you'd prefer, you can remove that. If you want to keep it as an NSTimeInterval

var Timestamp: NSTimeInterval {
    return NSDate().timeIntervalSince1970 * 1000
}

Declare these outside of the context of any class and they'll be accessible anywhere.

Enable ASP.NET ASMX web service for HTTP POST / GET requests

Actually, I found a somewhat quirky way to do this. Add the protocol to your web.config, but inside a location element. Specify the webservice location as the path attribute, like so:

<location path="YourWebservice.asmx">
  <system.web>
    <webServices>
      <protocols>
        <add name="HttpGet"/>
        <add name="HttpPost"/>
      </protocols>
    </webServices>
  </system.web>
</location>

How do I verify that an Android apk is signed with a release certificate?

Use console command:

apksigner verify --print-certs application-development-release.apk

You could find apksigner in ../sdk/build-tools/24.0.3/apksigner.bat. Only for build tools v. 24.0.3 and higher.

How to check SQL Server version

TL;DR

SQLCMD -S (LOCAL) -E -V 16 -Q "IF(ISNULL(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductMajorVersion') AS INT),0)<11) RAISERROR('You need SQL 2012 or later!',16,1)"
IF ERRORLEVEL 1 GOTO :ExitFail

This uses SQLCMD (comes with SQL Server) to connect to the local server instance using Windows auth, throw an error if a version check fails and return the @@ERROR as the command line ERRORLEVEL if >= 16 (and the second line goes to the :ExitFail label if the aforementioned ERRORLEVEL is >= 1).

Watchas, Gotchas & More Info

For SQL 2000+ you can use the SERVERPROPERTY to determine a lot of this info.

While SQL 2008+ supports the ProductMajorVersion & ProductMinorVersion properties, ProductVersion has been around since 2000 (remembering that if a property is not supported the function returns NULL).

If you are interested in earlier versions you can use the PARSENAME function to split the ProductVersion (remembering the "parts" are numbered right to left i.e. PARSENAME('a.b.c', 1) returns c).

Also remember that PARSENAME('a.b.c', 4) returns NULL, because SQL 2005 and earlier only used 3 parts in the version number!

So for SQL 2008+ you can simply use:

SELECT
    SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS ProductVersion,
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductMajorVersion')  AS INT) AS ProductMajorVersion,
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY ('ProductMinorVersion') AS INT) AS ProductMinorVersion;

For SQL 2000-2005 you can use:

SELECT
    SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS ProductVersion,
    CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 3 ELSE 4 END) AS INT) AS ProductVersion_Major,
    CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 2 ELSE 3 END) AS INT) AS ProductVersion_Minor,
    CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 1 ELSE 2 END) AS INT) AS ProductVersion_Revision,
    CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 0 ELSE 1 END) AS INT) AS ProductVersion_Build;

(the PARSENAME(...,0) is a hack to improve readability)

So a check for a SQL 2000+ version would be:

IF (CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 3 ELSE 4 END) AS INT) < 10) -- SQL2008
OR (
    (CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 3 ELSE 4 END) AS INT) = 10) -- SQL2008
AND (CAST(PARSENAME(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME), CASE WHEN SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') IS NULL THEN 2 ELSE 1 END) AS INT) < 5) -- R2 (this may need to be 50)
   )
    RAISERROR('You need SQL 2008R2 or later!', 16, 1);

This is a lot simpler if you're only only interested in SQL 2008+ because SERVERPROPERTY('ProductMajorVersion') returns NULL for earlier versions, so you can use:

IF (ISNULL(CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductMajorVersion') AS INT), 0) < 11) -- SQL2012
    RAISERROR('You need SQL 2012 or later!', 16, 1);

And you can use the ProductLevel and Edition (or EngineEdition) properties to determine RTM / SPn / CTPn and Dev / Std / Ent / etc respectively.

SELECT
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductVersion') AS SYSNAME) AS ProductVersion,
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('ProductLevel') AS SYSNAME)   AS ProductLevel,
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('Edition') AS SYSNAME)        AS Edition,
    CAST(SERVERPROPERTY('EngineEdition') AS INT)      AS EngineEdition;

FYI the major SQL version numbers are:

  • 8 = SQL 2000
  • 9 = SQL 2005
  • 10 = SQL 2008 (and 10.5 = SQL 2008R2)
  • 11 = SQL 2012
  • 12 = SQL 2014
  • 13 = SQL 2016
  • 14 = SQL 2017

And this all works for SQL Azure too!

EDITED: You may also want to check your DB compatibility level since it could be set to a lower compatibility.

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM sys.databases WHERE database_id=DB_ID() AND [compatibility_level] < 110)
    RAISERROR('Database compatibility level must be SQL2008R2 or later (110)!', 16, 1)

How do I add a reference to the MySQL connector for .NET?

"Add a reference to MySql.Data.dll" means you need to add a library reference to the downloaded connector. The IDE will link the database connection library with your application when it compiles.

Step-by-Step Example

I downloaded the binary (no installer) zip package from the MySQL web site, extracted onto the desktop, and did the following:

  1. Create a new project in Visual Studio
  2. In the Solution Explorer, under the project name, locate References and right-click on it. Select "Add Reference".
  3. In the "Add Reference" dialog, switch to the "Browse" tab and browse to the folder containing the downloaded connector. Navigate to the "bin" folder, and select the "MySql.Data.dll" file. Click OK.
  4. At the top of your code, add using MySql.Data.MySqlClient;. If you've added the reference correctly, IntelliSense should offer to complete this for you.

[] and {} vs list() and dict(), which is better?

In my opinion [] and {} are the most pythonic and readable ways to create empty lists/dicts.

Be wary of set()'s though, for example:

this_set = {5}
some_other_set = {}

Can be confusing. The first creates a set with one element, the second creates an empty dict and not a set.

Add primary key to existing table

Necromancing.
Just in case anybody has as good a schema to work with as me...
Here is how to do it correctly:

In this example, the table name is dbo.T_SYS_Language_Forms, and the column name is LANG_UID

-- First, chech if the table exists...
IF 0 < (
    SELECT COUNT(*) FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES
    WHERE TABLE_TYPE = 'BASE TABLE'
    AND TABLE_SCHEMA = 'dbo'
    AND TABLE_NAME = 'T_SYS_Language_Forms'
)
BEGIN
    -- Check for NULL values in the primary-key column
    IF 0 = (SELECT COUNT(*) FROM T_SYS_Language_Forms WHERE LANG_UID IS NULL)
    BEGIN
        ALTER TABLE T_SYS_Language_Forms ALTER COLUMN LANG_UID uniqueidentifier NOT NULL

        -- No, don't drop, FK references might already exist...
        -- Drop PK if exists (it is very possible it does not have the name you think it has...)
        -- ALTER TABLE T_SYS_Language_Forms DROP CONSTRAINT pk_constraint_name
        --DECLARE @pkDropCommand nvarchar(1000)
        --SET @pkDropCommand = N'ALTER TABLE T_SYS_Language_Forms DROP CONSTRAINT ' + QUOTENAME((SELECT CONSTRAINT_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS
        --WHERE CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'PRIMARY KEY'
        --AND TABLE_SCHEMA = 'dbo'
        --AND TABLE_NAME = 'T_SYS_Language_Forms'
        ----AND CONSTRAINT_NAME = 'PK_T_SYS_Language_Forms'
        --))
        ---- PRINT @pkDropCommand
        --EXECUTE(@pkDropCommand)
        -- Instead do
        -- EXEC sp_rename 'dbo.T_SYS_Language_Forms.PK_T_SYS_Language_Forms1234565', 'PK_T_SYS_Language_Forms';

        -- Check if they keys are unique (it is very possible they might not be)
        IF 1 >= (SELECT TOP 1 COUNT(*) AS cnt FROM T_SYS_Language_Forms GROUP BY LANG_UID ORDER BY cnt DESC)
        BEGIN

            -- If no Primary key for this table
            IF 0 =
            (
                SELECT COUNT(*) FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLE_CONSTRAINTS
                WHERE CONSTRAINT_TYPE = 'PRIMARY KEY'
                AND TABLE_SCHEMA = 'dbo'
                AND TABLE_NAME = 'T_SYS_Language_Forms'
                -- AND CONSTRAINT_NAME = 'PK_T_SYS_Language_Forms'
            )
                ALTER TABLE T_SYS_Language_Forms ADD CONSTRAINT PK_T_SYS_Language_Forms PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED (LANG_UID ASC)
            ;

        END -- End uniqueness check
        ELSE
            PRINT 'FSCK, this column has duplicate keys, and can thus not be changed to primary key...'

afxwin.h file is missing in VC++ Express Edition

Including the header afxwin.h signalizes use of MFC. The following instructions (based on those on CodeProject.com) could help to get MFC code compiling:

  1. Download and install the Windows Driver Kit.

  2. Select menu Tools > Options… > Projects and Solutions > VC++ Directories.

  3. In the drop-down menu Show directories for select Include files.

  4. Add the following paths (replace $(WDK_directory) with the directory where you installed Windows Driver Kit in the first step):

    $(WDK_directory)\inc\mfc42
    $(WDK_directory)\inc\atl30

  5. In the drop-down menu Show directories for select Library files and add (replace $(WDK_directory) like before):

    $(WDK_directory)\lib\mfc\i386
    $(WDK_directory)\lib\atl\i386

  6. In the $(WDK_directory)\inc\mfc42\afxwin.inl file, edit the following lines (starting from 1033):

    _AFXWIN_INLINE CMenu::operator==(const CMenu& menu) const
        { return ((HMENU) menu) == m_hMenu; }
    _AFXWIN_INLINE CMenu::operator!=(const CMenu& menu) const
        { return ((HMENU) menu) != m_hMenu; }

    to

    _AFXWIN_INLINE BOOL CMenu::operator==(const CMenu& menu) const
        { return ((HMENU) menu) == m_hMenu; }
    _AFXWIN_INLINE BOOL CMenu::operator!=(const CMenu& menu) const
        { return ((HMENU) menu) != m_hMenu; }

    In other words, add BOOL after _AFXWIN_INLINE.

How to clone an InputStream?

UPD. Check the comment before. It isn't exactly what was asked.

If you are using apache.commons you may copy streams using IOUtils .

You can use following code:

InputStream = IOUtils.toBufferedInputStream(toCopy);

Here is the full example suitable for your situation:

public void cloneStream() throws IOException{
    InputStream toCopy=IOUtils.toInputStream("aaa");
    InputStream dest= null;
    dest=IOUtils.toBufferedInputStream(toCopy);
    toCopy.close();
    String result = new String(IOUtils.toByteArray(dest));
    System.out.println(result);
}

This code requires some dependencies:

MAVEN

<dependency>
    <groupId>commons-io</groupId>
    <artifactId>commons-io</artifactId>
    <version>2.4</version>
</dependency>

GRADLE

'commons-io:commons-io:2.4'

Here is the DOC reference for this method:

Fetches entire contents of an InputStream and represent same data as result InputStream. This method is useful where,

Source InputStream is slow. It has network resources associated, so we cannot keep it open for long time. It has network timeout associated.

You can find more about IOUtils here: http://commons.apache.org/proper/commons-io/javadocs/api-2.4/org/apache/commons/io/IOUtils.html#toBufferedInputStream(java.io.InputStream)

Radio/checkbox alignment in HTML/CSS

There are several ways to implement it:

  1. For ASP.NET Standard CheckBox:

    .tdInputCheckBox
    {
    position:relative;
    top:-2px;
    }
    <table>
            <tr>
                <td class="tdInputCheckBox">
                    <asp:CheckBox ID="chkMale" runat="server" Text="Male" />
                    <asp:CheckBox ID="chkFemale" runat="server" Text="Female" />
                </td>
            </tr>
    </table>

  2. For DevExpress CheckBox:

    <dx:ASPxCheckBox ID="chkAccept" runat="server" Text="Yes" Layout="Flow"/>
    <dx:ASPxCheckBox ID="chkAccept" runat="server" Text="No" Layout="Flow"/>

  3. For RadioButtonList:

    <asp:RadioButtonList ID="rdoAccept" runat="server" RepeatDirection="Horizontal">
       <asp:ListItem>Yes</asp:ListItem>
       <asp:ListItem>No</asp:ListItem>
    </asp:RadioButtonList>

  4. For Required Field Validators:

    <asp:TextBox ID="txtEmailId" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
    <asp:RequiredFieldValidator ID="reqEmailId" runat="server" ErrorMessage="Email id is required." Display="Dynamic" ControlToValidate="txtEmailId"></asp:RequiredFieldValidator>
    <asp:RegularExpressionValidator ID="regexEmailId" runat="server" ErrorMessage="Invalid Email Id." ControlToValidate="txtEmailId" Text="*"></asp:RegularExpressionValidator>`

Finding diff between current and last version

I use Bitbucket with the Eclipse IDE with the Eclipse EGit plugin installed.

I compare a file from any version of its history (like SVN).

Menu Project Explorer → File → right click → TeamShow in history.

This will bring the history of all changes on that file. Now Ctrl click and select any two versions→ "Compare with each other".

How to store date/time and timestamps in UTC time zone with JPA and Hibernate

You would think this common problem would be taken care of by Hibernate. But its not! There are a few "hacks" to get it right.

The one I use is to store the Date as a Long in the database. So I am always working with milliseconds after 1/1/70. I then have getters and setters on my Class that return/accept only Dates. So the API remains the same. The down side is that I have longs in the database. SO with SQL I can pretty much only do <,>,= comparisons -- not fancy date operators.

Another approach is to user a custom mapping type as described here: http://www.hibernate.org/100.html

I think the correct way to deal with this is to use a Calendar instead of a Date though. With the Calendar you can set the TimeZone before persisting.

NOTE: Silly stackoverflow won't let me comment, so here is a response to david a.

If you create this object in Chicago:

new Date(0);

Hibernate persists it as "12/31/1969 18:00:00". Dates should be devoid of timezone, so I'm not sure why the adjustment would be made.

Combining two sorted lists in Python

is there a smarter way to do this in Python

This hasn't been mentioned, so I'll go ahead - there is a merge stdlib function in the heapq module of python 2.6+. If all you're looking to do is getting things done, this might be a better idea. Of course, if you want to implement your own, the merge of merge-sort is the way to go.

>>> list1 = [1, 5, 8, 10, 50]
>>> list2 = [3, 4, 29, 41, 45, 49]
>>> from heapq import merge
>>> list(merge(list1, list2))
[1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 29, 41, 45, 49, 50]

Here's the documentation.

Django optional url parameters

Thought I'd add a bit to the answer.

If you have multiple URL definitions then you'll have to name each of them separately. So you lose the flexibility when calling reverse since one reverse will expect a parameter while the other won't.

Another way to use regex to accommodate the optional parameter:

r'^project_config/(?P<product>\w+)/((?P<project_id>\w+)/)?$'

No tests found for given includes Error, when running Parameterized Unit test in Android Studio

For me, the cause of the error message

was having inadvertently added a .java test file under my src/test/kotlin test directory. Upon moving the file to the correct directory, src/test/java, the test executed as expected again.

Create two blank lines in Markdown

If you are using a library like markdown-it or PythonMarkdown this can also be solved by replacing two line breaks (in Regex /\n\n$/gm) with a line break and an invisible character (\n ) before rendering. Note that the character after \n is an Alt+0160 or an invisible character.

For example, using markdown-it (although it work for any other lib too) with the input:

1

2

3

4

5

Rendered with md.render(string.data.replace(/\n\n$/gm, "\n ")) you will get:

Java heap terminology: young, old and permanent generations?

Memory in SunHotSpot JVM is organized into three generations: young generation, old generation and permanent generation.

  • Young Generation : the newly created objects are allocated to the young gen.
  • Old Generation : If the new object requests for a larger heap space, it gets allocated directly into the old gen. Also objects which have survived a few GC cycles gets promoted to the old gen i.e long lived objects house in old gen.
  • Permanent Generation : The permanent generation holds objects that the JVM finds convenient to have the garbage collector manage, such as objects describing classes and methods, as well as the classes and methods themselves.

FYI: The permanent gen is not considered a part of the Java heap.

How does the three generations interact/relate to each other? Objects(except the large ones) are first allocated to the young generation. If an object remain alive after x no. of garbage collection cycles it gets promoted to the old/tenured gen. Hence we can say that the young gen contains the short lived objects while the old gen contains the objects having a long life. The permanent gen does not interact with the other two generations.

Codeigniter: does $this->db->last_query(); execute a query?

For me save_queries option was turned off so,

$this->db->save_queries = TRUE; //Turn ON save_queries for temporary use.
$str = $this->db->last_query();
echo $str;

How to avoid reverse engineering of an APK file?

Basically it's not possible. It will never be possible. However, there is hope. You can use an obfuscator to make it so some common attacks are a lot harder to carry out including things like:

  1. Renaming methods/classes (so in the decompiler you get types like a.a)
  2. Obfuscating control flow (so in the decompiler the code is very hard to read)
  3. Encrypting strings and possibly resources

I'm sure there are others, but that's the main ones. I work for a company called PreEmptive Solutions on a .NET obfuscator. They also have a Java obfuscator that works for Android as well one called DashO.

Obfuscation always comes with a price, though. Notably, performance is usually worse, and it requires some extra time around releases usually. However, if your intellectual property is extremely important to you, then it's usually worth it.

Otherwise, your only choice is to make it so that your Android application just passes through to a server that hosts all of the real logic of your application. This has its own share of problems, because it means users must be connected to the Internet to use your app.

Also, it's not just Android that has this problem. It's a problem on every app store. It's just a matter of how difficult it is to get to the package file (for example, I don't believe it's very easy on iPhones, but it's still possible).

How do I show a console output/window in a forms application?

Building on Chaz's answer, in .NET 5 there is a breaking change, so two modifications are required in the project file, i.e. changing OutputType and adding DisableWinExeOutputInference. Example:

<PropertyGroup>
    <OutputType>Exe</OutputType>
    <TargetFramework>net5.0-windows10.0.17763.0</TargetFramework>
    <UseWindowsForms>true</UseWindowsForms>
    <DisableWinExeOutputInference>true</DisableWinExeOutputInference>
    <Platforms>AnyCPU;x64;x86</Platforms>
</PropertyGroup>

SQL Server, How to set auto increment after creating a table without data loss?

Changing the IDENTITY property is really a metadata only change. But to update the metadata directly requires starting the instance in single user mode and messing around with some columns in sys.syscolpars and is undocumented/unsupported and not something I would recommend or will give any additional details about.

For people coming across this answer on SQL Server 2012+ by far the easiest way of achieving this result of an auto incrementing column would be to create a SEQUENCE object and set the next value for seq as the column default.

Alternatively, or for previous versions (from 2005 onwards), the workaround posted on this connect item shows a completely supported way of doing this without any need for size of data operations using ALTER TABLE...SWITCH. Also blogged about on MSDN here. Though the code to achieve this is not very simple and there are restrictions - such as the table being changed can't be the target of a foreign key constraint.

Example code.

Set up test table with no identity column.

CREATE TABLE dbo.tblFoo
(
bar INT PRIMARY KEY,
filler CHAR(8000),
filler2 CHAR(49)
)

INSERT INTO dbo.tblFoo (bar)
SELECT TOP (10000) ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY (SELECT 0))
FROM master..spt_values v1, master..spt_values v2

Alter it to have an identity column (more or less instant).

BEGIN TRY;
    BEGIN TRANSACTION;

    /*Using DBCC CHECKIDENT('dbo.tblFoo') is slow so use dynamic SQL to
      set the correct seed in the table definition instead*/
    DECLARE @TableScript nvarchar(max)
    SELECT @TableScript =
    '
    CREATE TABLE dbo.Destination(
        bar INT IDENTITY(' +
                     CAST(ISNULL(MAX(bar),0)+1 AS VARCHAR) + ',1)  PRIMARY KEY,
        filler CHAR(8000),
        filler2 CHAR(49)
        )

        ALTER TABLE dbo.tblFoo SWITCH TO dbo.Destination;
    '
    FROM dbo.tblFoo
    WITH (TABLOCKX,HOLDLOCK)

    EXEC(@TableScript)

    DROP TABLE dbo.tblFoo;

    EXECUTE sp_rename N'dbo.Destination', N'tblFoo', 'OBJECT';

    COMMIT TRANSACTION;
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
    IF XACT_STATE() <> 0 ROLLBACK TRANSACTION;
    PRINT ERROR_MESSAGE();
END CATCH;

Test the result.

INSERT INTO dbo.tblFoo (filler,filler2)
OUTPUT inserted.*
VALUES ('foo','bar')

Gives

bar         filler    filler2
----------- --------- ---------
10001       foo       bar

Clean up

DROP TABLE dbo.tblFoo

Resolve Javascript Promise outside function scope

Thanks to everyone who posted in this thread. I created a module that includes the Defer() object described earlier as well as a few other objects built upon it. They all leverage Promises and the neat Promise call-back syntax to implement communication/event handling within a program.

  • Defer: Promise that can be resolved failed remotely (outside of its body)
  • Delay: Promise that is resolved automatically after a given time
  • TimeOut: Promise that fails automatically after a given time.
  • Cycle: Re-triggerable promise to manage events with the Promise syntax
  • Queue: Execution queue based on Promise chaining.

Converting std::__cxx11::string to std::string

Answers here mostly focus on short way to fix it, but if that does not help, I'll give some steps to check, that helped me (Linux only):

  • If the linker errors happen when linking other libraries, build those libs with debug symbols ("-g" GCC flag)
  • List the symbols in the library and grep the symbols that linker complains about (enter the commands in command line):

    nm lib_your_problem_library.a | grep functionNameLinkerComplainsAbout

  • If you got the method signature, proceed to the next step, if you got no symbols instead, mostlikely you stripped off all the symbols from the library and that is why linker can't find them when linking the library. Rebuild the library without stripping ALL the symbols, you can strip debug (strip -S option) symbols if you need.

  • Use a c++ demangler to understand the method signature, for example, this one

  • Compare the method signature in the library that you just got with the one you are using in code (check header file as well), if they are different, use the proper header or the proper library or whatever other way you now know to fix it

grep a file, but show several surrounding lines?

$ grep thestring thefile -5

-5 gets you 5 lines above and below the match 'thestring' is equivalent to -C 5 or -A 5 -B 5.

What is a predicate in c#?

The following code can help you to understand some real world use of predicates (Combined with named iterators).

namespace Predicate
{
    class Person
    {
        public int Age { get; set; }
    }
    class Program
    {
        static void Main(string[] args)
        {
            foreach (Person person in OlderThan(18))
            {
                Console.WriteLine(person.Age);
            }
        }

        static IEnumerable<Person> OlderThan(int age)
        {
            Predicate<Person> isOld = x => x.Age > age;
            Person[] persons = { new Person { Age = 10 }, new Person { Age = 20 }, new Person { Age = 19 } };

            foreach (Person person in persons)
                if (isOld(person)) yield return person;
        }
    }
}

Failed to allocate memory: 8

Have a look at the official issue 33930. There is pointed out, that it may have to do with the start up of OpenGL during the start of the emulator. Others wrote it only crashes when they use WXGA800-skin and suggest to manually set the resolution to 800x1280.

Further there are ZIP-files provided to manually downgrade your android SDK to version 19 and plattform-tools to version 11. This may help as well to temporally fix the issue.

How we can bold only the name in table td tag not the value

I might be misunderstanding your question, so apologies if I am.

If you're looking for the words "Quid", "Application Number", etc. to be bold, just wrap them in <strong> tags:

How to resolve "The requested URL was rejected. Please consult with your administrator." error?

Your http is being blocked by a firewall from F5 Networks called Application Security Manager (ASM). It produces messages like:

Please consult with your administrator.
Your support ID is: xxxxxxxxxxxx

So your application is passing some data that for some reason ASM detects as a threat. Give the support id to you network engineer to learn the specific reason.

MySQL TEXT vs BLOB vs CLOB

It's worth to mention that CLOB / BLOB data types and their sizes are supported by MySQL 5.0+, so you can choose the proper data type for your need.

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/storage-requirements.html

Data Type Date Type Storage Required
(CLOB)      (BLOB)

TINYTEXT    TINYBLOB    L + 1 bytes, where L < 2**8  (255)
TEXT        BLOB        L + 2 bytes, where L < 2**16 (64 K)
MEDIUMTEXT  MEDIUMBLOB  L + 3 bytes, where L < 2**24 (16 MB)
LONGTEXT    LONGBLOB    L + 4 bytes, where L < 2**32 (4 GB)

where L stands for the byte length of a string

How to install a Notepad++ plugin offline?

If the plugin you want to install is not listed in the Plugins Admin, you may still install it manually. The plugin (in the DLL form) should be placed in the plugins subfolder of the Notepad++ Install Folder, under the subfolder with the same name of plugin binary name without file extension.

For example, if the plugin you want to install named myAwesomePlugin.dll, you should install it with the following path:

%PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\Notepad++\plugins\myAwesomePlugin\myAwesomePlugin.dll

or

%PROGRAMFILES%\Notepad++\plugins\myAwesomePlugin\myAwesomePlugin.dll

Once you installed the plugin, you can use (and you may configure) it via the menu “Plugins”.

Restart the Notepad++ after putting the plugin

Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler for Python 3.4

Visual Studio Community 2015 suffices to build extensions for Python 3.5. It's free but a 6 GB download (overkill). On my computer it installed vcvarsall at C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 14.0\VC\vcvarsall.bat

For Python 3.4 you'd need Visual Studio 2010. I don't think there's any free edition. See https://matthew-brett.github.io/pydagogue/python_msvc.html

What is @RenderSection in asp.net MVC

If

(1) you have a _Layout.cshtml view like this

<html>
    <body>
        @RenderBody()

    </body>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="~/lib/layout.js"></script>
    @RenderSection("scripts", required: false)
</html>

(2) you have Contacts.cshtml

@section Scripts{
    <script type="text/javascript" src="~/lib/contacts.js"></script>

}
<div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-6 col-md-offset-3">
        <h2>    Contacts</h2>
    </div>
</div>

(3) you have About.cshtml

<div class="row">
    <div class="col-md-6 col-md-offset-3">
        <h2>    Contacts</h2>
    </div>
</div>

On you layout page, if required is set to false "@RenderSection("scripts", required: false)", When page renders and user is on about page, the contacts.js doesn't render.

    <html>
        <body><div>About<div>
        </body>
        <script type="text/javascript" src="~/lib/layout.js"></script>
    </html>

if required is set to true "@RenderSection("scripts", required: true)", When page renders and user is on ABOUT page, the contacts.js STILL gets rendered.

<html>
    <body><div>About<div>
    </body>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="~/lib/layout.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="~/lib/contacts.js"></script>
</html>

IN SHORT, when set to true, whether you need it or not on other pages, it will get rendered anyhow. If set to false, it will render only when the child page is rendered.

Javascript loading CSV file into an array

The original code works fine for reading and separating the csv file data but you need to change the data type from csv to text.

Is it possible to capture a Ctrl+C signal and run a cleanup function, in a "defer" fashion?

To add slightly to the other answers, if you actually want to catch SIGTERM (the default signal sent by the kill command), you can use syscall.SIGTERM in place of os.Interrupt. Beware that the syscall interface is system-specific and might not work everywhere (e.g. on windows). But it works nicely to catch both:

c := make(chan os.Signal, 2)
signal.Notify(c, os.Interrupt, syscall.SIGTERM)
....

Docker error cannot delete docker container, conflict: unable to remove repository reference

Noticed this is a 2-years old question, but still want to share my workaround for this particular question:

Firstly, run docker container ls -a to list all the containers you have and pinpoint the want you want to delete.

Secondly, delete the one with command docker container rm <CONTAINER ID> (If the container is currently running, you should stop it first, run docker container stop <CONTAINER ID> to gracefully stop the specified container, if it does not stop it for whatever the reason is, alternatively you can run docker container kill <CONTAINER ID> to force shutdown of the specified container).

Thirdly, remove the container by running docker container rm <CONTAINER ID>.

Lastly you can run docker image ls -a to view all the images and delete the one you want to by running docker image rm <hash>.

How to compare dates in c#

If you have date in DateTime variable then its a DateTime object and doesn't contain any format. Formatted date are expressed as string when you call DateTime.ToString method and provide format in it.

Lets say you have two DateTime variable, you can use the compare method for comparision,

DateTime date1 = new DateTime(2009, 8, 1, 0, 0, 0);
DateTime date2 = new DateTime(2009, 8, 2, 0, 0, 0);
int result = DateTime.Compare(date1, date2);
string relationship;

if (result < 0)
   relationship = "is earlier than";
else if (result == 0)
   relationship = "is the same time as";
else
   relationship = "is later than";

What are major differences between C# and Java?

Comparing Java 7 and C# 3

(Some features of Java 7 aren't mentioned here, but the using statement advantage of all versions of C# over Java 1-6 has been removed.)

Not all of your summary is correct:

  • In Java methods are virtual by default but you can make them final. (In C# they're sealed by default, but you can make them virtual.)
  • There are plenty of IDEs for Java, both free (e.g. Eclipse, Netbeans) and commercial (e.g. IntelliJ IDEA)

Beyond that (and what's in your summary already):

  • Generics are completely different between the two; Java generics are just a compile-time "trick" (but a useful one at that). In C# and .NET generics are maintained at execution time too, and work for value types as well as reference types, keeping the appropriate efficiency (e.g. a List<byte> as a byte[] backing it, rather than an array of boxed bytes.)
  • C# doesn't have checked exceptions
  • Java doesn't allow the creation of user-defined value types
  • Java doesn't have operator and conversion overloading
  • Java doesn't have iterator blocks for simple implemetation of iterators
  • Java doesn't have anything like LINQ
  • Partly due to not having delegates, Java doesn't have anything quite like anonymous methods and lambda expressions. Anonymous inner classes usually fill these roles, but clunkily.
  • Java doesn't have expression trees
  • C# doesn't have anonymous inner classes
  • C# doesn't have Java's inner classes at all, in fact - all nested classes in C# are like Java's static nested classes
  • Java doesn't have static classes (which don't have any instance constructors, and can't be used for variables, parameters etc)
  • Java doesn't have any equivalent to the C# 3.0 anonymous types
  • Java doesn't have implicitly typed local variables
  • Java doesn't have extension methods
  • Java doesn't have object and collection initializer expressions
  • The access modifiers are somewhat different - in Java there's (currently) no direct equivalent of an assembly, so no idea of "internal" visibility; in C# there's no equivalent to the "default" visibility in Java which takes account of namespace (and inheritance)
  • The order of initialization in Java and C# is subtly different (C# executes variable initializers before the chained call to the base type's constructor)
  • Java doesn't have properties as part of the language; they're a convention of get/set/is methods
  • Java doesn't have the equivalent of "unsafe" code
  • Interop is easier in C# (and .NET in general) than Java's JNI
  • Java and C# have somewhat different ideas of enums. Java's are much more object-oriented.
  • Java has no preprocessor directives (#define, #if etc in C#).
  • Java has no equivalent of C#'s ref and out for passing parameters by reference
  • Java has no equivalent of partial types
  • C# interfaces cannot declare fields
  • Java has no unsigned integer types
  • Java has no language support for a decimal type. (java.math.BigDecimal provides something like System.Decimal - with differences - but there's no language support)
  • Java has no equivalent of nullable value types
  • Boxing in Java uses predefined (but "normal") reference types with particular operations on them. Boxing in C# and .NET is a more transparent affair, with a reference type being created for boxing by the CLR for any value type.

This is not exhaustive, but it covers everything I can think of off-hand.

How to cast Object to boolean?

If the object is actually a Boolean instance, then just cast it:

boolean di = (Boolean) someObject;

The explicit cast will do the conversion to Boolean, and then there's the auto-unboxing to the primitive value. Or you can do that explicitly:

boolean di = ((Boolean) someObject).booleanValue();

If someObject doesn't refer to a Boolean value though, what do you want the code to do?

Fastest way to serialize and deserialize .NET objects

The binary serializer included with .net should be faster that the XmlSerializer. Or another serializer for protobuf, json, ...

But for some of them you need to add Attributes, or some other way to add metadata. For example ProtoBuf uses numeric property IDs internally, and the mapping needs to be somehow conserved by a different mechanism. Versioning isn't trivial with any serializer.

How do I implement interfaces in python?

interface supports Python 2.7 and Python 3.4+.

To install interface you have to

pip install python-interface

Example Code:

from interface import implements, Interface

class MyInterface(Interface):

    def method1(self, x):
        pass

    def method2(self, x, y):
        pass

class MyClass(implements(MyInterface)):

    def method1(self, x):
        return x * 2

    def method2(self, x, y):
        return x + y

AWS EFS vs EBS vs S3 (differences & when to use?)

AWS EFS, EBS and S3. From Functional Standpoint, here is the difference

EFS:

  1. Network filesystem :can be shared across several Servers; even between regions. The same is not available for EBS case. This can be used esp for storing the ETL programs without the risk of security

  2. Highly available, scalable service.

  3. Running any application that has a high workload, requires scalable storage, and must produce output quickly.

  4. It can provide higher throughput. It match sudden file system growth, even for workloads up to 500,000 IOPS or 10 GB per second.

  5. Lift-and-shift application support: EFS is elastic, available, and scalable, and enables you to move enterprise applications easily and quickly without needing to re-architect them.

  6. Analytics for big data: It has the ability to run big data applications, which demand significant node throughput, low-latency file access, and read-after-write operations.

EBS:

  1. for NoSQL databases, EBS offers NoSQL databases the low-latency performance and dependability they need for peak performance.

S3:

Robust performance, scalability, and availability: Amazon S3 scales storage resources free from resource procurement cycles or investments upfront.

2)Data lake and big data analytics: Create a data lake to hold raw data in its native format, then using machine learning tools, analytics to draw insights.

  1. Backup and restoration: Secure, robust backup and restoration solutions
  2. Data archiving
  3. S3 is an object store good at storing vast numbers of backups or user files. Unlike EBS or EFS, S3 is not limited to EC2. Files stored within an S3 bucket can be accessed programmatically or directly from services such as AWS CloudFront. Many websites use it to hold their content and media files, which may be served efficiently via AWS CloudFront.

What is the Swift equivalent of isEqualToString in Objective-C?

For the UITextField text comparison I am using below code and working fine for me, let me know if you find any error.

if(txtUsername.text.isEmpty || txtPassword.text.isEmpty)

Set background color of WPF Textbox in C# code

I take it you are creating the TextBox in XAML?

In that case, you need to give the text box a name. Then in the code-behind you can then set the Background property using a variety of brushes. The simplest of which is the SolidColorBrush:

myTextBox.Background = new SolidColorBrush(Colors.White);

How can I convert the "arguments" object to an array in JavaScript?

Here is benchmark of several methods converting arguments into array.

As for me, the best solution for small amount of arguments is:

function sortArgs (){
  var q = [];
  for (var k = 0, l = arguments.length; k < l; k++){
    q[k] = arguments[k];
  }
  return q.sort();
}

For other cases:

function sortArgs (){ return Array.apply(null, arguments).sort(); }

Clear contents of cells in VBA using column reference

For anyone like me who came across this and needs a solution that doesn't clear headers, here is the one liner that works for me:

How to change DataTable columns order

Try to use the DataColumn.SetOrdinal method. For example:

dataTable.Columns["Qty"].SetOrdinal(0);
dataTable.Columns["Unit"].SetOrdinal(1);

UPDATE: This answer received much more attention than I expected. To avoid confusion and make it easier to use I decided to create an extension method for column ordering in DataTable:

Extension method:

public static class DataTableExtensions
{
    public static void SetColumnsOrder(this DataTable table, params String[] columnNames)
    {
        int columnIndex = 0;
        foreach(var columnName in columnNames)
        {
            table.Columns[columnName].SetOrdinal(columnIndex);
            columnIndex++;
        }
    }
}

Usage:

table.SetColumnsOrder("Qty", "Unit", "Id");

or

table.SetColumnsOrder(new string[]{"Qty", "Unit", "Id"});

How to get ID of the last updated row in MySQL?

I had to CAST the id (dunno why)... or I cannot get the @uids content (it was a blob) Btw many thanks for Pomyk answer!

C# Public Enums in Classes

Currently, your enum is nested inside of your Card class. All you have to do is move the definition of the enum out of the class:

// A better name which follows conventions instead of card_suits is
public enum CardSuit
{
    Clubs,
    Hearts,
    Spades,
    Diamonds
}

public class Card
{
}

To Specify:

The name change from card_suits to CardSuit was suggested because Microsoft guidelines suggest Pascal Case for Enumerations and the singular form is more descriptive in this case (as a plural would suggest that you're storing multiple enumeration values by ORing them together).

gcc: undefined reference to

However, avpicture_get_size is defined.

No, as the header (<libavcodec/avcodec.h>) just declares it.

The definition is in the library itself.

So you might like to add the linker option to link libavcodec when invoking gcc:

-lavcodec

Please also note that libraries need to be specified on the command line after the files needing them:

gcc -I$HOME/ffmpeg/include program.c -lavcodec

Not like this:

gcc -lavcodec -I$HOME/ffmpeg/include program.c

Referring to Wyzard's comment, the complete command might look like this:

gcc -I$HOME/ffmpeg/include program.c -L$HOME/ffmpeg/lib -lavcodec

For libraries not stored in the linkers standard location the option -L specifies an additional search path to lookup libraries specified using the -l option, that is libavcodec.x.y.z in this case.

For a detailed reference on GCC's linker option, please read here.

Python vs Cpython

implementation means what language was used to implement Python and not how python Code would be implemented. The advantage of using CPython is the availability of C Run-time as well as easy integration with C/C++.

So CPython was originally implemented using C. There were other forks to the original implementation which enabled Python to lever-edge Java (JYthon) or .NET Runtime (IronPython).

Based on which Implementation you use, library availability might vary, for example Ctypes is not available in Jython, so any library which uses ctypes would not work in Jython. Similarly, if you want to use a Java Class, you cannot directly do so from CPython. You either need a glue (JEPP) or need to use Jython (The Java Implementation of Python)

Find unused npm packages in package.json

If you're using a Unix like OS (Linux, OSX, etc) then you can use a combination of find and egrep to search for require statements containing your package name:

find . -path ./node_modules -prune -o -name "*.js" -exec egrep -ni 'name-of-package' {} \;

If you search for the entire require('name-of-package') statement, remember to use the correct type of quotation marks:

find . -path ./node_modules -prune -o -name "*.js" -exec egrep -ni 'require("name-of-package")' {} \;

or

find . -path ./node_modules -prune -o -name "*.js" -exec egrep -ni "require('name-of-package')" {} \;

The downside is that it's not fully automatic, i.e. it doesn't extract package names from package.json and check them. You need to do this for each package yourself. Since package.json is just JSON this could be remedied by writing a small script that uses child_process.exec to run this command for each dependency. And make it a module. And add it to the NPM repo...

What's the difference between using CGFloat and float?

CGFloat is a regular float on 32-bit systems and a double on 64-bit systems

typedef float CGFloat;// 32-bit
typedef double CGFloat;// 64-bit

So you won't get any performance penalty.

Creating a mock HttpServletRequest out of a url string?

for those looking for a way to mock POST HttpServletRequest with Json payload, the below is in Kotlin, but the key take away here is the DelegatingServetInputStream when you want to mock the request.getInputStream from the HttpServletRequest

@Mock

@Mock
private lateinit var response: HttpServletResponse

@Mock
private lateinit var chain: FilterChain

@InjectMocks
private lateinit var filter: ValidationFilter

@Test
fun `continue filter chain with valid json payload`() {
    val payload = """{
      "firstName":"aB",
      "middleName":"asdadsa",
      "lastName":"asdsada",
      "dob":null,
      "gender":"male"
    }""".trimMargin()

    whenever(request.requestURL).
        thenReturn(StringBuffer("/profile/personal-details"))
    whenever(request.method).
        thenReturn("PUT")
    whenever(request.inputStream).
        thenReturn(DelegatingServletInputStream(ByteArrayInputStream(payload.toByteArray())))

    filter.doFilter(request, response, chain)

    verify(chain).doFilter(request, response)
}

What determines the monitor my app runs on?

It's not exactly the answer to this question but I dealt with this problem with the Shift + Win + [left,right] arrow keys shortcut. You can move the currently active window to another monitor with it.

Export result set on Dbeaver to CSV

You don't need to use the clipboard, you can export directly the whole resultset (not just what you see) to a file :

  1. Execute your query
  2. Right click any anywhere in the results
  3. click "Export resultset..." to open the export wizard
  4. Choose the format you want (CSV according to your question)
  5. Review the settings in the next panes when clicking "Next".
  6. Set the folder where the file will be created, and "Finish"

The export runs in the background, a popup will appear when it's done.

In newer versions of DBeaver you can just :

  1. right click the SQL of the query you want to export
  2. Execute > Export from query
  3. Choose the format you want (CSV according to your question)
  4. Review the settings in the next panes when clicking "Next".
  5. Set the folder where the file will be created, and "Finish"

The export runs in the background, a popup will appear when it's done.

Compared to the previous way of doing exports, this saves you step 1 (executing the query) which can be handy with time/resource intensive queries.

Change the URL in the browser without loading the new page using JavaScript

A more simple answer i present,

window.history.pushState(null, null, "/abc")

this will add /abc after the domain name in the browser URL. Just copy this code and paste it in the browser console and see the URL changing to "https://stackoverflow.com/abc"

How to change angular port from 4200 to any other

The location for port settings has changed a couple of times.

If using Angular CLI 1

Change angular-cli.json

{
  "defaults": {
    "serve": {
      "host": "0.0.0.0",
      "port": 5000
    }
  }
}

If using the latest Angular CLI

Change angular.json

"projects": {
    "project-name": {
        ...
        "architect": {
            "serve": {
                "options": {
                  "host": "0.0.0.0",
                  "port": 5000
                }
            }
        }
        ...
    }
}

Without changing any file

Run the command

ng serve --host 0.0.0.0 --port 5000

Evenly space multiple views within a container view

Another approach might be to have the top and bottom labels have constraints relative to the view top and bottom, respectively, and have the middle view have top and bottom constraints relative to the first and third view, respectively.

Note that you have more control over constraints than it might seem by dragging views close to one another until guiding dashed lines appear - these indicate constraints between the two objects that will be formed instead of between the object and the superview.

In this case you would then want to alter the constraints to be "Greater than or equal to" the desired value, instead of "equal to" to allow them to resize. Not sure if this will do exactly what you want.

What version of javac built my jar?

Since I needed to analyze fat jars I was interested in the version of each individual class in a jar file. Therefore I took Joe Liversedge approach https://stackoverflow.com/a/27877215/1497139 and combined it with David J. Liszewski' https://stackoverflow.com/a/3313839/1497139 class number version table to create a bash script jarv to show the versions of all class files in a jar file.

What is the difference between ndarray and array in numpy?

numpy.ndarray() is a class, while numpy.array() is a method / function to create ndarray.

In numpy docs if you want to create an array from ndarray class you can do it with 2 ways as quoted:

1- using array(), zeros() or empty() methods: Arrays should be constructed using array, zeros or empty (refer to the See Also section below). The parameters given here refer to a low-level method (ndarray(…)) for instantiating an array.

2- from ndarray class directly: There are two modes of creating an array using __new__: If buffer is None, then only shape, dtype, and order are used. If buffer is an object exposing the buffer interface, then all keywords are interpreted.

The example below gives a random array because we didn't assign buffer value:

np.ndarray(shape=(2,2), dtype=float, order='F', buffer=None)

array([[ -1.13698227e+002,   4.25087011e-303],
       [  2.88528414e-306,   3.27025015e-309]])         #random

another example is to assign array object to the buffer example:

>>> np.ndarray((2,), buffer=np.array([1,2,3]),
...            offset=np.int_().itemsize,
...            dtype=int) # offset = 1*itemsize, i.e. skip first element
array([2, 3])

from above example we notice that we can't assign a list to "buffer" and we had to use numpy.array() to return ndarray object for the buffer

Conclusion: use numpy.array() if you want to make a numpy.ndarray() object"

Send POST data on redirect with JavaScript/jQuery?

This is quite handy to use:

var myRedirect = function(redirectUrl, arg, value) {
  var form = $('<form action="' + redirectUrl + '" method="post">' +
  '<input type="hidden" name="'+ arg +'" value="' + value + '"></input>' + '</form>');
  $('body').append(form);
  $(form).submit();
};

then use it like:

myRedirect("/yourRedirectingUrl", "arg", "argValue");

Fixing broken UTF-8 encoding

This script had a nice approach. Converting it to the language of your choice should not be too difficult:

http://plasmasturm.org/log/416/

#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
use warnings;

use Encode qw( decode FB_QUIET );

binmode STDIN, ':bytes';
binmode STDOUT, ':encoding(UTF-8)';

my $out;

while ( <> ) {
  $out = '';
  while ( length ) {
    # consume input string up to the first UTF-8 decode error
    $out .= decode( "utf-8", $_, FB_QUIET );
    # consume one character; all octets are valid Latin-1
    $out .= decode( "iso-8859-1", substr( $_, 0, 1 ), FB_QUIET ) if length;
  }
  print $out;
}

What does if [ $? -eq 0 ] mean for shell scripts?

It's checking the return value ($?) of grep. In this case it's comparing it to 0 (success).

Usually when you see something like this (checking the return value of grep) it's checking to see whether the particular string was detected. Although the redirect to /dev/null isn't necessary, the same thing can be accomplished using -q.

Difference between Activity and FragmentActivity

A FragmentActivity is a subclass of Activity that was built for the Android Support Package.

The FragmentActivity class adds a couple new methods to ensure compatibility with older versions of Android, but other than that, there really isn't much of a difference between the two. Just make sure you change all calls to getLoaderManager() and getFragmentManager() to getSupportLoaderManager() and getSupportFragmentManager() respectively.

How do I remove a library from the arduino environment?

In Elegoo Super Starter Kit, Part 2, Lesson 2.12, IR Receiver Module, I hit the problem that the lesson's IRremote library has a hard conflict with the built-in Arduino RobotIRremote library. I am using the Win10 IDE App, and it was non-trivial to "move the RobotIRremote" folder like the pre-Win10 instructions said. The built-in Libraries are saved at a path like: C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\ArduinoLLC.ArduinoIDE_1.8.42.0_x86__mdqgnx93n4wtt\libraries You won't be able to see WindowsApps unless you show hidden files, and you can't do anything in that folder structure until you are the owner. Carefully follow these directions to make that happen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PmrOzBDZTzw
After hours of frustration, the process above finally resulted in success for me. Elegoo gets an F+ for modern instructions on this lesson.

How to apply !important using .css()?

An alternative way to append style in head:

$('head').append('<style> #elm{width:150px !important} </style>');

This appends style after all your CSS files so it will have higher priority than other CSS files and will be applied.

Resync git repo with new .gitignore file

The solution mentioned in ".gitignore file not ignoring" is a bit extreme, but should work:

# rm all files
git rm -r --cached .
# add all files as per new .gitignore
git add .
# now, commit for new .gitignore to apply
git commit -m ".gitignore is now working"

(make sure to commit first your changes you want to keep, to avoid any incident as jball037 comments below.
The --cached option will keep your files untouched on your disk though.)

You also have other more fine-grained solution in the blog post "Making Git ignore already-tracked files":

git rm --cached `git ls-files -i --exclude-standard`

Bassim suggests in his edit:

Files with space in their paths

In case you get an error message like fatal: path spec '...' did not match any files, there might be files with spaces in their path.

You can remove all other files with option --ignore-unmatch:

git rm --cached --ignore-unmatch `git ls-files -i --exclude-standard`

but unmatched files will remain in your repository and will have to be removed explicitly by enclosing their path with double quotes:

git rm --cached "<path.to.remaining.file>"

How can I create a progress bar in Excel VBA?

You can add a Form and name it as Form1, add a Frame to it as Frame1 as well as Label1 too. Set Frame1 width to 200, Back Color to Blue. Place the code in the module and check if it helps.

    Sub Main()
    Dim i As Integer
    Dim response
    Form1.Show vbModeless
    Form1.Frame1.Width = 0
    For i = 10 To 10000
        With Form1
            .Label1.Caption = Round(i / 100, 0) & "%"
            .Frame1.Width = Round(i / 100, 0) * 2
             DoEvents
        End With
    Next i

    Application.Wait Now + 0.0000075

    Unload Form1

    response = MsgBox("100% Done", vbOKOnly)

    End Sub

If you want to display on the Status Bar then you can use other way that's simpler:

   Sub Main()
   Dim i As Integer
   Dim response
   For i = 10 To 10000
        Application.StatusBar = Round(i / 100, 0) & "%"
   Next i

   Application.Wait Now + 0.0000075

   response = MsgBox("100% Done", vbOKOnly)

   End Sub

How does functools partial do what it does?

Partials can be used to make new derived functions that have some input parameters pre-assigned

To see some real world usage of partials, refer to this really good blog post:
http://chriskiehl.com/article/Cleaner-coding-through-partially-applied-functions/

A simple but neat beginner's example from the blog, covers how one might use partial on re.search to make code more readable. re.search method's signature is:

search(pattern, string, flags=0)

By applying partial we can create multiple versions of the regular expression search to suit our requirements, so for example:

is_spaced_apart = partial(re.search, '[a-zA-Z]\s\=')
is_grouped_together = partial(re.search, '[a-zA-Z]\=')

Now is_spaced_apart and is_grouped_together are two new functions derived from re.search that have the pattern argument applied(since pattern is the first argument in the re.search method's signature).

The signature of these two new functions(callable) is:

is_spaced_apart(string, flags=0)     # pattern '[a-zA-Z]\s\=' applied
is_grouped_together(string, flags=0) # pattern '[a-zA-Z]\=' applied

This is how you could then use these partial functions on some text:

for text in lines:
    if is_grouped_together(text):
        some_action(text)
    elif is_spaced_apart(text):
        some_other_action(text)
    else:
        some_default_action()

You can refer the link above to get a more in depth understanding of the subject, as it covers this specific example and much more..

oracle sql: update if exists else insert

The way I always do it (assuming the data is never to be deleted, only inserted) is to

  • Firstly do an insert, if this fails with a unique constraint violation then you know the row is there,
  • Then do an update

Unfortunately many frameworks such as Hibernate treat all database errors (e.g. unique constraint violation) as unrecoverable conditions, so it isn't always easy. (In Hibernate the solution is to open a new session/transaction just to execute this one insert command.)

You can't just do a select count(*) .. where .. as even if that returns zero, and therefore you choose to do an insert, between the time you do the select and the insert someone else might have inserted the row and therefore your insert will fail.

Downgrade typescript to 2.0.0 both globally and locally helped me to resolve it.

Globally:

npm uninstall typescript -g
npm cache clean
npm install [email protected] -g

Locally: GO into the project folder you created by ng new

npm uninstall typescript

I also changed the version of typescript within package.json from ^2.0.0 to 2.0.0, but it didn't work until I downgrade the local typescript installation.

Examples of good gotos in C or C++

I don't use goto's myself, however I did work with a person once that would use them in specific cases. If I remember correctly, his rationale was around performance issues - he also had specific rules for how. Always in the same function, and the label was always BELOW the goto statement.

Using Colormaps to set color of line in matplotlib

U may do as I have written from my deleted account (ban for new posts :( there was). Its rather simple and nice looking.

Im using 3-rd one of these 3 ones usually, also I wasny checking 1 and 2 version.

from matplotlib.pyplot import cm
import numpy as np

#variable n should be number of curves to plot (I skipped this earlier thinking that it is obvious when looking at picture - sorry my bad mistake xD): n=len(array_of_curves_to_plot)
#version 1:

color=cm.rainbow(np.linspace(0,1,n))
for i,c in zip(range(n),color):
   ax1.plot(x, y,c=c)

#or version 2: - faster and better:

color=iter(cm.rainbow(np.linspace(0,1,n)))
c=next(color)
plt.plot(x,y,c=c)

#or version 3:

color=iter(cm.rainbow(np.linspace(0,1,n)))
for i in range(n):
   c=next(color)
   ax1.plot(x, y,c=c)

example of 3:

Ship RAO of Roll vs Ikeda damping in function of Roll amplitude A44

Get Excel sheet name and use as variable in macro

in a Visual Basic Macro you would use

pName = ActiveWorkbook.Path ' the path of the currently active file
wbName = ActiveWorkbook.Name ' the file name of the currently active file
shtName = ActiveSheet.Name ' the name of the currently selected worksheet

The first sheet in a workbook can be referenced by

ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1)

so after deleting the [Report] tab you would use

ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("Report").Delete
shtName = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1).Name

to "work on that sheet later on" you can create a range object like

Dim MySheet as Range
MySheet = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(shtName).[A1]

and continue working on MySheet(rowNum, colNum) etc. ...

shortcut creation of a range object without defining shtName:

Dim MySheet as Range
MySheet = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1).[A1]

What is getattr() exactly and how do I use it?

setattr()

We use setattr to add an attribute to our class instance. We pass the class instance, the attribute name, and the value.

getattr()

With getattr we retrive these values

For example

Employee = type("Employee", (object,), dict())

employee = Employee()

# Set salary to 1000
setattr(employee,"salary", 1000 )

# Get the Salary
value = getattr(employee, "salary")

print(value)

Git diff between current branch and master but not including unmerged master commits

As also noted by John Szakmeister and VasiliNovikov, the shortest command to get the full diff from master's perspective on your branch is:

git diff master...

This uses your local copy of master.

To compare a specific file use:

git diff master... filepath

Output example:

Example usage

Catch paste input

There is one caveat here. In Firefox, if you reset the input text on every keyup, if the text is longer than the viewable area allowed by the input width, then resetting the value on every keyup breaks the browser functionality that auto scrolls the text to the caret position at the end of the text. Instead the text scrolls back to the beginning leaving the caret out of view.

function scroll(elementToBeScrolled)
{
     //this will reset the scroll to the bottom of the viewable area.
     elementToBeScrolled.topscroll = elementToBeScrolled.scrollheight;
}

I am using Mac OS X 10.9.5. This is how I manage multiple JDK/JRE on my machine when I need one version to run application A and use another version for application B.

I created the following script after getting some help online.

#!bin/sh
function setjdk() {
  if [ $# -ne 0 ]; then
   removeFromPath '/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/'
   if [ -n "${JAVA_HOME+x}" ]; then
    removeFromPath $JAVA_HOME
   fi
   export JAVA_HOME=/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/$1/Contents/Home
   export PATH=$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH
  fi
 }
 function removeFromPath() {
  export PATH=$(echo $PATH | sed -E -e "s;:$1;;" -e "s;$1:?;;")
 }
#setjdk jdk1.8.0_60.jdk
setjdk jdk1.7.0_15.jdk

I put the above script in .profile file. Just open terminal, type vi .profile, append the script with the above snippet and save it. Once your out type source .profile, this will run your profile script without you having to restart the terminal. Now type java -version it should show 1.7 as your current version. If you intend to change it to 1.8 then comment the line setjdk jdk1.7.0_15.jdk and uncomment the line setjdk jdk1.8.0_60.jdk. Save the script and run it again with source command. I use this mechanism to manage multiple versions of JDK/JRE when I have to compile 2 different Maven projects which need different java versions.

how to release localhost from Error: listen EADDRINUSE

On Linux (Ubuntu derivatives at least)

killall node

is easier than this form.

ps | grep <something>
kill <somepid>

Neither will work if you have a orphaned child holding the port. Instead, do this:

netstat -punta | grep <port>

If the port is being held you'll see something like this:

tcp           0      0.0.0.0:<port>          0.0.0.*       LISTEN     <pid>/<parent>

Now kill by pid:

kill -9 <pid>

dispatch_after - GCD in Swift?

In Swift 4

Use this snippet:

    let delayInSec = 1.0
    DispatchQueue.main.asyncAfter(deadline: .now() + delayInSec) {
       // code here
       print("It works")
    }

Starting the week on Monday with isoWeekday()

Call startOf before isoWeekday.

var begin = moment(date).startOf('week').isoWeekday(1);

Working demo

What does the "+" (plus sign) CSS selector mean?

The + sign means select an "adjacent sibling"

For example, this style will apply from the second <p>:

_x000D_
_x000D_
p + p {
   font-weight: bold;
}
_x000D_
<div>
   <p>Paragraph 1</p>
   <p>Paragraph 2</p>
</div>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Example

See this JSFiddle and you will understand it: http://jsfiddle.net/7c05m7tv/ (Another JSFiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/7c05m7tv/70/)

Browser Support

Adjacent sibling selectors are supported in all modern browsers.

Forgetting to set up relationships between the tables. I remember having to clean this up when I first started working at my current employer.

Can I call methods in constructor in Java?

You can: this is what constructors are for. Also you make it clear that the object is never constructed in an unknown state (without configuration loaded).

You shouldn't: calling instance method in constructor is dangerous because the object is not yet fully initialized (this applies mainly to methods than can be overridden). Also complex processing in constructor is known to have a negative impact on testability.

How to use target in location.href

If you go with the solution by @qiao, perhaps you would want to remove the appended child since the tab remains open and subsequent clicks would add more elements to the DOM.

// Code by @qiao
var a = document.createElement('a')
a.href = 'http://www.google.com'
a.target = '_blank'
document.body.appendChild(a)
a.click()
// Added code
document.body.removeChild(a)

using stored procedure in entity framework

You can call a stored procedure using SqlQuery (See here)

// Prepare the query
var query = context.Functions.SqlQuery(
    "EXEC [dbo].[GetFunctionByID] @p1",
    new SqlParameter("p1", 200));

// add NoTracking() if required

// Fetch the results

Android turn On/Off WiFi HotSpot programmatically

For Android 8.0, there is a new API to handle Hotspots. As far as I know, the old way using reflection doesn't work anymore. Please refer to:

Android Developers https://developer.android.com/reference/android/net/wifi/WifiManager.html#startLocalOnlyHotspot(android.net.wifi.WifiManager.LocalOnlyHotspotCallback,%20android.os.Handler)

void startLocalOnlyHotspot (WifiManager.LocalOnlyHotspotCallback callback,
                Handler handler)

Request a local only hotspot that an application can use to communicate between co-located devices connected to the created WiFi hotspot. The network created by this method will not have Internet access.

Stack Overflow
How to turn on/off wifi hotspot programmatically in Android 8.0 (Oreo)

onStarted(WifiManager.LocalOnlyHotspotReservation reservation) method will be called if hotspot is turned on.. Using WifiManager.LocalOnlyHotspotReservation reference you call close() method to turn off hotspot.

COUNT DISTINCT with CONDITIONS

Try the following statement:

select  distinct A.[Tag],
     count(A.[Tag]) as TAG_COUNT,
     (SELECT count(*) FROM [TagTbl] AS B WHERE A.[Tag]=B.[Tag] AND B.[ID]>0)
     from [TagTbl] AS A GROUP BY A.[Tag]

The first field will be the tag the second will be the whole count the third will be the positive ones count.

How do you count the elements of an array in java

  1. Your code won't compile, it should be int [] theArray = new int[20];;
  2. You can get the array length as theArray.length;
  3. For primitive types, the array will be initialized with the default values (0 for int).
  4. You can make it Integer [] theArray = new Integer[20]; and then count initialized members as this code does:

    public int count(Object [] array) {
        int c = 0;
        for(Object el: array) { if(el != null) c++; }
            return c;
    }

Please note that this answer isn't about why you may need this and what is the best way to do what you want.

How do I remove the blue styling of telephone numbers on iPhone/iOS?

<meta name="format-detection" content="telephone=no">. This metatag works in the default Safari browser on iOS devices and will only work for telephone numbers that are not wrapped in a telephone link so

1-800-123-4567
<a href="tel:18001234567">1-800-123-4567</a>

the first line will not be formatted as a link if you specify the metatag but the second line will because it's wrapped in a telephone anchor.

You can forego the metatag all-together and use a mixin such as

a[href^=tel]{
    color:inherit;
    text-decoration:inherit;
    font-size:inherit;
    font-style:inherit;
    font-weight:inherit;
}

to maintain intended styling of your telephone numbers, but you must make sure you wrap them in a telephone anchor.

If you want to be extra cautious and protect against the event of a telephone number which is not properly formatted with a wrapping anchor tag you can drill through the DOM and adjust with this script. Adjust the replacement pattern as desired.

$('body').html($('body').html().replace(/^\D?(\d{3})\D?\D?(\d{3})\D?(\d{4})/g, '<a href="tel:+1$1$2$3">($1) $2-$3</a>'));

or even better without jQuery

document.body.innerHTML = document.body.innerHTML.replace(/^\D?(\d{3})\D?\D?(\d{3})\D?(\d{4})/g,'<a href="tel:+1$1$2$3">($1) $2-$3</a>');

How can I make an EXE file from a Python program?

Also known as Frozen Binaries but not the same as as the output of a true compiler- they run byte code through a virtual machine (PVM). Run the same as a compiled program just larger because the program is being compiled along with the PVM. Py2exe can freeze standalone programs that use the tkinter, PMW, wxPython, and PyGTK GUI libraties; programs that use the pygame game programming toolkit; win32com client programs; and more. The Stackless Python system is a standard CPython implementation variant that does not save state on the C language call stack. This makes Python more easy to port to small stack architectures, provides efficient multiprocessing options, and fosters novel programming structures such as coroutines. Other systems of study that are working on future development: Pyrex is working on the Cython system, the Parrot project, the PyPy is working on replacing the PVM altogether, and of course the founder of Python is working with Google to get Python to run 5 times faster than C with the Unladen Swallow project. In short, py2exe is the easiest and Cython is more efficient for now until these projects improve the Python Virtual Machine (PVM) for standalone files.

How to set specific Java version to Maven

To avoid any impact to your project and to your Environment Variables, you can configure the Maven Compiler Plugin just to the project's POM, specifying the Source and Target java version

  <plugins>
    <plugin>
        <artifactId>maven-compiler-plugin</artifactId>
        <version>3.5.1</version>
        <configuration>
            <source>1.7</source>
            <target>1.7</target>
        </configuration>
    </plugin>
    ...
  </plugins>

How do you print in a Go test using the "testing" package?

The *_test.go file is a Go source like the others, you can initialize a new logger every time if you need to dump complex data structure, here an example:

// initZapLog is delegated to initialize a new 'log manager'
func initZapLog() *zap.Logger {
    config := zap.NewDevelopmentConfig()
    config.EncoderConfig.EncodeLevel = zapcore.CapitalColorLevelEncoder
    config.EncoderConfig.TimeKey = "timestamp"
    config.EncoderConfig.EncodeTime = zapcore.ISO8601TimeEncoder
    logger, _ := config.Build()
    return logger
}

Then, every time, in every test:

func TestCreateDB(t *testing.T) {
    loggerMgr := initZapLog()
    // Make logger avaible everywhere
    zap.ReplaceGlobals(loggerMgr)
    defer loggerMgr.Sync() // flushes buffer, if any
    logger := loggerMgr.Sugar()
    logger.Debug("START")
    conf := initConf()
    /* Your test here
    if false {
        t.Fail()
    }*/
}

Node - was compiled against a different Node.js version using NODE_MODULE_VERSION 51

I had a similar problem with robotjs. There were some deprecated code that required node v11, but I had already compiled electron code on v12. So I got basically the same error. Nothing here worked as I was basically trying to rebuild electron and my other dependencies into node v11 from v12.

Here is what I did (part of this is based on chitzui's answer, credit where credit is due):

  • Back up package.json
  • completely delete the node_modules folder
  • completely delete package_lock.json
  • delete package.json (will reinit later)
  • Close any open editors and other cmd windows that are in the project's directory.
  • run npm init to reinit package, then missing data with old backed up package.json
  • run npm i
  • fixed :)

Hope this helps.

How to change the default collation of a table?

It sets the default collation for the table; if you create a new column, that should be collated with latin_general_ci -- I think. Try specifying the collation for the individual column and see if that works. MySQL has some really bizarre behavior in regards to the way it handles this.

Abstract variables in Java?

Why do you want all subclasses to define the variable? If every subclass is supposed to have it, just define it in the superclass. BTW, given that it's good OOP practice not to expose fields anyway, your question makes even less sense.

What is an abstract class in PHP?

An abstract class is a class that is only partially implemented by the programmer. It may contain one or more abstract methods. An abstract method is simply a function definition that serves to tell the programmer that the method must be implemented in a child class.

There is good explanation of that here.

Inserting into Oracle and retrieving the generated sequence ID

Doing it as a stored procedure does have lot of advantages. You can get the sequence that is inserted into the table using syntax insert into table_name values returning.

Like:

declare
some_seq_val  number;
lv_seq        number;
begin
some_seq_val := your_seq.nextval;
insert into your_tab (col1, col2, col3)
values (some_seq_val, val2, val3) returning some_seq_val into lv_seq;

dbms_output.put_line('The inserted sequence is: '||to_char(lv_seq));
end;
/

Or just return some_seq_val. In case you are not making use of SEQUENCE, and arriving the sequence on some calculation, you can make use of returning into effectively.

Is it possible to send a variable number of arguments to a JavaScript function?

The splat and spread operators are part of ES6, the planned next version of Javascript. So far only Firefox supports them. This code works in FF16+:

var arr = ['quick', 'brown', 'lazy'];

var sprintf = function(str, ...args)
{
    for (arg of args) {
        str = str.replace(/%s/, arg);
    }
    return str;
}

sprintf.apply(null, ['The %s %s fox jumps over the %s dog.', ...arr]);
sprintf('The %s %s fox jumps over the %s dog.', 'slow', 'red', 'sleeping');

Note the awkard syntax for spread. The usual syntax of sprintf('The %s %s fox jumps over the %s dog.', ...arr); is not yet supported. You can find an ES6 compatibility table here.

Note also the use of for...of, another ES6 addition. Using for...in for arrays is a bad idea.

Javascript: formatting a rounded number to N decimals

I think below function can help

function roundOff(value,round) {
   return (parseInt(value * (10 ** (round + 1))) - parseInt(value * (10 ** round)) * 10) > 4 ? (((parseFloat(parseInt((value + parseFloat(1 / (10 ** round))) * (10 ** round))))) / (10 ** round)) : (parseFloat(parseInt(value * (10 ** round))) / ( 10 ** round));
}

usage : roundOff(600.23458,2); will return 600.23

Input and output numpy arrays to h5py

h5py provides a model of datasets and groups. The former is basically arrays and the latter you can think of as directories. Each is named. You should look at the documentation for the API and examples:

http://docs.h5py.org/en/latest/quick.html

A simple example where you are creating all of the data upfront and just want to save it to an hdf5 file would look something like:

In [1]: import numpy as np
In [2]: import h5py
In [3]: a = np.random.random(size=(100,20))
In [4]: h5f = h5py.File('data.h5', 'w')
In [5]: h5f.create_dataset('dataset_1', data=a)
Out[5]: <HDF5 dataset "dataset_1": shape (100, 20), type "<f8">

In [6]: h5f.close()

You can then load that data back in using: '

In [10]: h5f = h5py.File('data.h5','r')
In [11]: b = h5f['dataset_1'][:]
In [12]: h5f.close()

In [13]: np.allclose(a,b)
Out[13]: True

Definitely check out the docs:

http://docs.h5py.org

Writing to hdf5 file depends either on h5py or pytables (each has a different python API that sits on top of the hdf5 file specification). You should also take a look at other simple binary formats provided by numpy natively such as np.save, np.savez etc:

http://docs.scipy.org/doc/numpy/reference/routines.io.html

SQL JOIN - WHERE clause vs. ON clause

  • Does not matter for inner joins

  • Matters for outer joins

    a. WHERE clause: After joining. Records will be filtered after join has taken place.

    b. ON clause - Before joining. Records (from right table) will be filtered before joining. This may end up as null in the result (since OUTER join).

Example: Consider the below tables:

    1. documents:
     | id    | name        |
     --------|-------------|
     | 1     | Document1   |
     | 2     | Document2   |
     | 3     | Document3   |
     | 4     | Document4   |
     | 5     | Document5   |

    2. downloads:
     | id   | document_id   | username |
     |------|---------------|----------|
     | 1    | 1             | sandeep  |
     | 2    | 1             | simi     |
     | 3    | 2             | sandeep  |
     | 4    | 2             | reya     |
     | 5    | 3             | simi     |

a) Inside WHERE clause:

  SELECT documents.name, downloads.id
    FROM documents
    LEFT OUTER JOIN downloads
      ON documents.id = downloads.document_id
    WHERE username = 'sandeep'

 For above query the intermediate join table will look like this.

    | id(from documents) | name         | id (from downloads) | document_id | username |
    |--------------------|--------------|---------------------|-------------|----------|
    | 1                  | Document1    | 1                   | 1           | sandeep  |
    | 1                  | Document1    | 2                   | 1           | simi     |
    | 2                  | Document2    | 3                   | 2           | sandeep  |
    | 2                  | Document2    | 4                   | 2           | reya     |
    | 3                  | Document3    | 5                   | 3           | simi     |
    | 4                  | Document4    | NULL                | NULL        | NULL     |
    | 5                  | Document5    | NULL                | NULL        | NULL     |

  After applying the `WHERE` clause and selecting the listed attributes, the result will be:

   | name         | id |
   |--------------|----|
   | Document1    | 1  |
   | Document2    | 3  |

b) Inside JOIN clause

  SELECT documents.name, downloads.id
  FROM documents
    LEFT OUTER JOIN downloads
      ON documents.id = downloads.document_id
        AND username = 'sandeep'

For above query the intermediate join table will look like this.

    | id(from documents) | name         | id (from downloads) | document_id | username |
    |--------------------|--------------|---------------------|-------------|----------|
    | 1                  | Document1    | 1                   | 1           | sandeep  |
    | 2                  | Document2    | 3                   | 2           | sandeep  |
    | 3                  | Document3    | NULL                | NULL        | NULL     |
    | 4                  | Document4    | NULL                | NULL        | NULL     |
    | 5                  | Document5    | NULL                | NULL        | NULL     |

Notice how the rows in `documents` that did not match both the conditions are populated with `NULL` values.

After Selecting the listed attributes, the result will be:

   | name       | id   |
   |------------|------|
   |  Document1 | 1    |
   |  Document2 | 3    |
   |  Document3 | NULL |
   |  Document4 | NULL |
   |  Document5 | NULL |

How can I get a specific field of a csv file?

There is an interesting point you need to catch about csv.reader() object. The csv.reader object is not list type, and not subscriptable.

This works:

for r in csv.reader(file_obj): # file not closed
    print r

This does not:

r = csv.reader(file_obj)
print r[0]

So, you first have to convert to list type in order to make the above code work.

r = list( csv.reader(file_obj) )
print r[0]

Remove all special characters, punctuation and spaces from string

Differently than everyone else did using regex, I would try to exclude every character that is not what I want, instead of enumerating explicitly what I don't want.

For example, if I want only characters from 'a to z' (upper and lower case) and numbers, I would exclude everything else:

import re
s = re.sub(r"[^a-zA-Z0-9]","",s)

This means "substitute every character that is not a number, or a character in the range 'a to z' or 'A to Z' with an empty string".

In fact, if you insert the special character ^ at the first place of your regex, you will get the negation.

Extra tip: if you also need to lowercase the result, you can make the regex even faster and easier, as long as you won't find any uppercase now.

import re
s = re.sub(r"[^a-z0-9]","",s.lower())
