Programs & Examples On #Low level

In terms of a computer system, low-level refers to the components that appears lower in the stack of system layers.

Error LNK2019: Unresolved External Symbol in Visual Studio

When you have everything #included, an unresolved external symbol is often a missing * or & in the declaration or definition of a function.

Copy a file in a sane, safe and efficient way

Too many!

The "ANSI C" way buffer is redundant, since a FILE is already buffered. (The size of this internal buffer is what BUFSIZ actually defines.)

The "OWN-BUFFER-C++-WAY" will be slow as it goes through fstream, which does a lot of virtual dispatching, and again maintains internal buffers or each stream object. (The "COPY-ALGORITHM-C++-WAY" does not suffer this, as the streambuf_iterator class bypasses the stream layer.)

I prefer the "COPY-ALGORITHM-C++-WAY", but without constructing an fstream, just create bare std::filebuf instances when no actual formatting is needed.

For raw performance, you can't beat POSIX file descriptors. It's ugly but portable and fast on any platform.

The Linux way appears to be incredibly fast — perhaps the OS let the function return before I/O was finished? In any case, that's not portable enough for many applications.

EDIT: Ah, "native Linux" may be improving performance by interleaving reads and writes with asynchronous I/O. Letting commands pile up can help the disk driver decide when is best to seek. You might try Boost Asio or pthreads for comparison. As for "can't beat POSIX file descriptors"… well that's true if you're doing anything with the data, not just blindly copying.

Java GUI frameworks. What to choose? Swing, SWT, AWT, SwingX, JGoodies, JavaFX, Apache Pivot?

My personal opinion: Go for Swing together with the NetBeans platform.

If you need advanced components (more than NetBeans offers) you can easily integrate SwingX without problems (or JGoodies) as the NetBeans platform is completely based on Swing.

I would not start a large desktop application (or one that is going to be large) without a good platform that is build upon the underlying UI framework.

The other option is SWT together with the Eclipse RCP, but it's harder (though not impossible) to integrate "pure" Swing components into such an application.

The learning curve is a bit steep for the NetBeans platform (although I guess that's true for Eclipse as well) but there are some good books around which I would highly recommend.

C++11 introduced a standardized memory model. What does it mean? And how is it going to affect C++ programming?

This is now a multiple-year old question, but being very popular, it's worth mentioning a fantastic resource for learning about the C++11 memory model. I see no point in summing up his talk in order to make this yet another full answer, but given this is the guy who actually wrote the standard, I think it's well worth watching the talk.

Herb Sutter has a three hour long talk about the C++11 memory model titled "atomic<> Weapons", available on the Channel9 site - part 1 and part 2. The talk is pretty technical, and covers the following topics:

  1. Optimizations, Races, and the Memory Model
  2. Ordering – What: Acquire and Release
  3. Ordering – How: Mutexes, Atomics, and/or Fences
  4. Other Restrictions on Compilers and Hardware
  5. Code Gen & Performance: x86/x64, IA64, POWER, ARM
  6. Relaxed Atomics

The talk doesn't elaborate on the API, but rather on the reasoning, background, under the hood and behind the scenes (did you know relaxed semantics were added to the standard only because POWER and ARM do not support synchronized load efficiently?).

Using HTML5 file uploads with AJAX and jQuery

With jQuery (and without FormData API) you can use something like this:

function readFile(file){
   var loader = new FileReader();
   var def = $.Deferred(), promise = def.promise();

   //--- provide classic deferred interface
   loader.onload = function (e) { def.resolve(e.target.result); };
   loader.onprogress = loader.onloadstart = function (e) { def.notify(e); };
   loader.onerror = loader.onabort = function (e) { def.reject(e); };
   promise.abort = function () { return loader.abort.apply(loader, arguments); };

   loader.readAsBinaryString(file);

   return promise;
}

function upload(url, data){
    var def = $.Deferred(), promise = def.promise();
    var mul = buildMultipart(data);
    var req = $.ajax({
        url: url,
        data: mul.data,
        processData: false,
        type: "post",
        async: true,
        contentType: "multipart/form-data; boundary="+mul.bound,
        xhr: function() {
            var xhr = jQuery.ajaxSettings.xhr();
            if (xhr.upload) {

                xhr.upload.addEventListener('progress', function(event) {
                    var percent = 0;
                    var position = event.loaded || event.position; /*event.position is deprecated*/
                    var total = event.total;
                    if (event.lengthComputable) {
                        percent = Math.ceil(position / total * 100);
                        def.notify(percent);
                    }
                }, false);
            }
            return xhr;
        }
    });
    req.done(function(){ def.resolve.apply(def, arguments); })
       .fail(function(){ def.reject.apply(def, arguments); });

    promise.abort = function(){ return req.abort.apply(req, arguments); }

    return promise;
}

var buildMultipart = function(data){
    var key, crunks = [], bound = false;
    while (!bound) {
        bound = $.md5 ? $.md5(new Date().valueOf()) : (new Date().valueOf());
        for (key in data) if (~data[key].indexOf(bound)) { bound = false; continue; }
    }

    for (var key = 0, l = data.length; key < l; key++){
        if (typeof(data[key].value) !== "string") {
            crunks.push("--"+bound+"\r\n"+
                "Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\""+data[key].name+"\"; filename=\""+data[key].value[1]+"\"\r\n"+
                "Content-Type: application/octet-stream\r\n"+
                "Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary\r\n\r\n"+
                data[key].value[0]);
        }else{
            crunks.push("--"+bound+"\r\n"+
                "Content-Disposition: form-data; name=\""+data[key].name+"\"\r\n\r\n"+
                data[key].value);
        }
    }

    return {
        bound: bound,
        data: crunks.join("\r\n")+"\r\n--"+bound+"--"
    };
};

//----------
//---------- On submit form:
var form = $("form");
var $file = form.find("#file");
readFile($file[0].files[0]).done(function(fileData){
   var formData = form.find(":input:not('#file')").serializeArray();
   formData.file = [fileData, $file[0].files[0].name];
   upload(form.attr("action"), formData).done(function(){ alert("successfully uploaded!"); });
});

With FormData API you just have to add all fields of your form to FormData object and send it via $.ajax({ url: url, data: formData, processData: false, contentType: false, type:"POST"})

Struct memory layout in C

In C, the compiler is allowed to dictate some alignment for every primitive type. Typically the alignment is the size of the type. But it's entirely implementation-specific.

Padding bytes are introduced so every object is properly aligned. Reordering is not allowed.

Possibly every remotely modern compiler implements #pragma pack which allows control over padding and leaves it to the programmer to comply with the ABI. (It is strictly nonstandard, though.)

From C99 §6.7.2.1:

12 Each non-bit-field member of a structure or union object is aligned in an implementation- defined manner appropriate to its type.

13 Within a structure object, the non-bit-field members and the units in which bit-fields reside have addresses that increase in the order in which they are declared. A pointer to a structure object, suitably converted, points to its initial member (or if that member is a bit-field, then to the unit in which it resides), and vice versa. There may be unnamed padding within a structure object, but not at its beginning.

How to convert an object to a byte array in C#

I found another way to convert an object to a byte[], here is my solution:

IEnumerable en = (IEnumerable) myObject;
byte[] myBytes = en.OfType<byte>().ToArray();

WCF timeout exception detailed investigation

If you are using .Net client then you may not have set

//This says how many outgoing connection you can make to a single endpoint. Default Value is 2
System.Net.ServicePointManager.DefaultConnectionLimit = 200;

here is the original question and answer WCF Service Throttling

Update:

This config goes in .Net client application may be on start up or whenever but before starting your tests.

Moreover you can have it in app.config file as well like following

<system.net>
    <connectionManagement>
      <add maxconnection = "200" address ="*" />
    </connectionManagement>
  </system.net>

Git: How to reset a remote Git repository to remove all commits?

Were I you I would do something like this:

Before doing anything please keep a copy (better safe than sorry)

git checkout master
git checkout -b temp
git reset --hard <sha-1 of your first commit>
git add .
git commit -m 'Squash all commits in single one'
git push origin temp

After doing that you can delete other branches.

Result: You are going to have a branch with only 2 commits.

Use git log --oneline to see your commits in a minimalistic way and to find SHA-1 for commits!

What does "TypeError 'xxx' object is not callable" means?

The action occurs when you attempt to call an object which is not a function, as with (). For instance, this will produce the error:

>>> a = 5
>>> a()
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'int' object is not callable

Class instances can also be called if they define a method __call__

One common mistake that causes this error is trying to look up a list or dictionary element, but using parentheses instead of square brackets, i.e. (0) instead of [0]

Creating a List of Lists in C#

you should not use Nested List in List.

List<List<T>>

is not legal, even if T were a defined type.

How to use BOOLEAN type in SELECT statement

From documentation:

You cannot insert the values TRUE and FALSE into a database column. You cannot select or fetch column values into a BOOLEAN variable. Functions called from a SQL query cannot take any BOOLEAN parameters. Neither can built-in SQL functions such as TO_CHAR; to represent BOOLEAN values in output, you must use IF-THEN or CASE constructs to translate BOOLEANvalues into some other type, such as 0 or 1, 'Y' or 'N', 'true' or 'false', and so on.

You will need to make a wrapper function that takes an SQL datatype and use it instead.

How to sort an ArrayList in Java

Implement Comparable interface to Fruit.

public class Fruit implements Comparable<Fruit> {

It implements the method

@Override

Then do call sort method

Collections.sort(fruitList);

How can I get the concatenation of two lists in Python without modifying either one?

Just to let you know:

When you write list1 + list2, you are calling the __add__ method of list1, which returns a new list. in this way you can also deal with myobject + list1 by adding the __add__ method to your personal class.

How to get values from IGrouping

var groups = list.GroupBy(x => x.ID);

Can anybody suggest how to get the values (List) from an IGrouping<int, smth> in such a context?

"IGrouping<int, smth> group" is actually an IEnumerable with a key, so you either:

  • iterate on the group or
  • use group.ToList() to convert it to a List
foreach (IGrouping<int, smth> group in groups)
{
   var thisIsYourGroupKey = group.Key;
   List<smth> list = group.ToList();     // or use directly group.foreach
}

(Deep) copying an array using jQuery

I realize you're looking for a "deep" copy of an array, but if you just have a single level array you can use this:

Copying a native JS Array is easy. Use the Array.slice() method which creates a copy of part/all of the array.

var foo = ['a','b','c','d','e'];
var bar = foo.slice();

now foo and bar are 5 member arrays of 'a','b','c','d','e'

of course bar is a copy, not a reference... so if you did this next...

bar.push('f');
alert('foo:' + foo.join(', '));
alert('bar:' + bar.join(', '));

you would now get:

foo:a, b, c, d, e
bar:a, b, c, d, e, f

++i or i++ in for loops ??

++i is a pre-increment; i++ is post-increment.
The downside of post-increment is that it generates an extra value; it returns a copy of the old value while modifying i. Thus, you should avoid it when possible.

Can you recommend a free light-weight MySQL GUI for Linux?

I really like the MySQL collection of of GUI Tools. They aren't too large or resource hungry.

There are quite a few options here as well. Of the applications presented on that page, I like SQL Buddy - it does require a web server, however.

How can I copy a file on Unix using C?

Copying files byte-by-byte does work, but is slow and wasteful on modern UNIXes. Modern UNIXes have “copy-on-write” support built-in to the filesystem: a system call makes a new directory entry pointing at the existing bytes on disk, and no file content bytes on disk are touched until one of the copies is modified, at which point only the changed blocks are written to disk. This allows near-instant file copies that use no additional file blocks, regardless of file size. For example, here are some details about how this works in xfs.

On linux, use the FICLONE ioctl as coreutils cp now does by default.

 #ifdef FICLONE
   return ioctl (dest_fd, FICLONE, src_fd);
 #else
   errno = ENOTSUP;
   return -1;
 #endif

On macOS, use clonefile(2) for instant copies on APFS volumes. This is what Apple’s cp -c uses. The docs are not completely clear but it is likely that copyfile(3) with COPYFILE_CLONE also uses this. Leave a comment if you’d like me to test that.

In case these copy-on-write operations are not supported—whether the OS is too old, the underlying file system does not support it, or because you are copying files between different filesystems—you do need to fall back to trying sendfile, or as a last resort, copying byte-by-byte. But to save everyone a lot of time and disk space, please give FICLONE and clonefile(2) a try first.

Remove all special characters except space from a string using JavaScript

I tried Seagul's very creative solution, but found it treated numbers also as special characters, which did not suit my needs. So here is my (failsafe) tweak of Seagul's solution...

//return true if char is a number
function isNumber (text) {
  if(text) {
    var reg = new RegExp('[0-9]+$');
    return reg.test(text);
  }
  return false;
}

function removeSpecial (text) {
  if(text) {
    var lower = text.toLowerCase();
    var upper = text.toUpperCase();
    var result = "";
    for(var i=0; i<lower.length; ++i) {
      if(isNumber(text[i]) || (lower[i] != upper[i]) || (lower[i].trim() === '')) {
        result += text[i];
      }
    }
    return result;
  }
  return '';
}

How to query DATETIME field using only date in Microsoft SQL Server?

How does MySQL process ORDER BY and LIMIT in a query?

Just as @James says, it will order all records, then get the first 20 rows.

As it is so, you are guaranteed to get the 20 first published articles, the newer ones will not be shown.

In your situation, I recommend that you add desc to order by publish_date, if you want the newest articles, then the newest article will be first.

If you need to keep the result in ascending order, and still only want the 10 newest articles you can ask mysql to sort your result two times.

This query below will sort the result descending and limit the result to 10 (that is the query inside the parenthesis). It will still be sorted in descending order, and we are not satisfied with that, so we ask mysql to sort it one more time. Now we have the newest result on the last row.

select t.article
from
    (select article, publish_date
     from table1
     order by publish_date desc limit 10) t

order by t.publish_date asc;

If you need all columns, it is done this way:

select t.*
from
    (select *
     from table1
     order by publish_date desc limit 10) t

order by t.publish_date asc;

I use this technique when I manually write queries to examine the database for various things. I have not used it in a production environment, but now when I bench marked it, the extra sorting does not impact the performance.

checking if number entered is a digit in jquery

I would suggest using regexes:

var intRegex = /^\d+$/;
var floatRegex = /^((\d+(\.\d *)?)|((\d*\.)?\d+))$/;

var str = $('#myTextBox').val();
if(intRegex.test(str) || floatRegex.test(str)) {
   alert('I am a number');
   ...
}

Or with a single regex as per @Platinum Azure's suggestion:

var numberRegex = /^[+-]?\d+(\.\d+)?([eE][+-]?\d+)?$/;
var str = $('#myTextBox').val();
if(numberRegex.test(str)) {
   alert('I am a number');
   ...
}

C++ string to double conversion

Coversion from string to double can be achieved by using the 'strtod()' function from the library 'stdlib.h'

#include <iostream>
#include <stdlib.h>
int main ()
{
    std::string data="20.9";
    double value = strtod(data.c_str(), NULL);
    std::cout<<value<<'\n';
    return 0;
}

Eclipse - java.lang.ClassNotFoundException

There are many convoluted suggestions here.

I've encountered this problem multiple times with Maven projects after moving resources around by drag 'n' drop, or performing refactoring of class names.

If this occurs, simply copy (not move) the problem Test Case (.java) via terminal/file browser to another location, right-click -> Delete in Eclipse and choose to delete on disk when given the option, move/copy the copied file to the original file location, then select your project in Eclipse and press F5 to refresh resources.

This is quick and easy to do, and has fixed the problem permanently for me every time.

How to implement the Softmax function in Python

From mathematical point of view both sides are equal.

And you can easily prove this. Let's m=max(x). Now your function softmax returns a vector, whose i-th coordinate is equal to

enter image description here

notice that this works for any m, because for all (even complex) numbers e^m != 0

  • from computational complexity point of view they are also equivalent and both run in O(n) time, where n is the size of a vector.

  • from numerical stability point of view, the first solution is preferred, because e^x grows very fast and even for pretty small values of x it will overflow. Subtracting the maximum value allows to get rid of this overflow. To practically experience the stuff I was talking about try to feed x = np.array([1000, 5]) into both of your functions. One will return correct probability, the second will overflow with nan

  • your solution works only for vectors (Udacity quiz wants you to calculate it for matrices as well). In order to fix it you need to use sum(axis=0)

          wsPOR.Sheets("Sheet1").Rows.Count).End(xlUp).Row + 1

Similarly

wsPOR.Range("A2:G" & lastrow).Select

should be

wsPOR.Sheets("Sheet1").Range("A2:G" & lastrow).Select

what are the .map files used for in Bootstrap 3.x?

The bootstrap css can be generated by Less. The main purpose of map file is used to link the css source code to less source code in the chrome dev tool. As we used to do .If we inspect the element in the chrome dev tool. you can see the source code of css. But if include the map file in the page with bootstrap css file. you can see the less code which apply to the element style you want to inspect.

What's the difference between select_related and prefetch_related in Django ORM?

Both methods achieve the same purpose, to forego unnecessary db queries. But they use different approaches for efficiency.

The only reason to use either of these methods is when a single large query is preferable to many small queries. Django uses the large query to create models in memory preemptively rather than performing on demand queries against the database.

select_related performs a join with each lookup, but extends the select to include the columns of all joined tables. However this approach has a caveat.

Joins have the potential to multiply the number of rows in a query. When you perform a join over a foreign key or one-to-one field, the number of rows won't increase. However, many-to-many joins do not have this guarantee. So, Django restricts select_related to relations that won't unexpectedly result in a massive join.

The "join in python" for prefetch_related is a little more alarming then it should be. It creates a separate query for each table to be joined. It filters each of these table with a WHERE IN clause, like:

SELECT "credential"."id",
       "credential"."uuid",
       "credential"."identity_id"
FROM   "credential"
WHERE  "credential"."identity_id" IN
    (84706, 48746, 871441, 84713, 76492, 84621, 51472);

Rather than performing a single join with potentially too many rows, each table is split into a separate query.

Java: is there a map function?

Since Java 8, there are some standard options to do this in JDK:

Collection<E> in = ...
Object[] mapped = in.stream().map(e -> doMap(e)).toArray();
// or
List<E> mapped = in.stream().map(e -> doMap(e)).collect(Collectors.toList());

See java.util.Collection.stream() and java.util.stream.Collectors.toList().

Git merge is not possible because I have unmerged files

The error message:

merge: remote/master - not something we can merge

is saying that Git doesn't recognize remote/master. This is probably because you don't have a "remote" named "remote". You have a "remote" named "origin".

Think of "remotes" as an alias for the url to your Git server. master is your locally checked-out version of the branch. origin/master is the latest version of master from your Git server that you have fetched (downloaded). A fetch is always safe because it will only update the "origin/x" version of your branches.

So, to get your master branch back in sync, first download the latest content from the git server:

git fetch

Then, perform the merge:

git merge origin/master

...But, perhaps the better approach would be:

git pull origin master

The pull command will do the fetch and merge for you in one step.

The FastCGI process exited unexpectedly

As the answer of 'sepehr' this issues are because of VC++ Redistributable suitable version for PHP are not installed or need to be reinstalled again.

I faced it before so i'll explain my steps to fix it.

1- Each PHP version is built by a specific Visual C++ Redistributable version like (10, 11,12,14,..) what ever. ((How you know!! look.. ))

  • Check back enter link description here The PHP Site then at the left side of this page, look at "Which version do I choose?" then see what version of VC++ is fits your PHP version installed.

  • Now YOU HAVE TO Download both of VC++ 32 and 64. and if your PC has it already then Unistall them first. and then install what you downloaded recently bu (first 32 then 64).

- VC download links are exists on the mentioned PHP Site on the left side also.

I hope it helps you.

How to make modal dialog in WPF?

Window.Show will show the window, and continue execution -- it's a non-blocking call.

Window.ShowDialog will block the calling thread (kinda [1]), and show the dialog. It will also block interaction with the parent/owning window. When the dialog is dismissed (for whatever reason), ShowDialog will return to the caller, and will allow you to access DialogResult (if you want it).

[1] It will keep the dispatcher pumping by pushing a dispatcher frame onto the WPF dispatcher. This will cause the message pump to keep pumping.

How do I attach events to dynamic HTML elements with jQuery?

After jQuery 1.7 the preferred methods are .on() and .off()

Sean's answer shows an example.

Now Deprecated:

Use the jQuery functions .live() and .die(). Available in jQuery 1.3.x

From the docs:

To display each paragraph's text in an alert box whenever it is clicked:

$("p").live("click", function(){
  alert( $(this).text() );
});

Also, the livequery plugin does this and has support for more events.

MAX function in where clause mysql

We can't reference the result of an aggregate function (for example MAX() ) in a WHERE clause of the same SELECT.

The normative pattern for solving this type of problem is to use an inline view, something like this:

SELECT t.firstName
     , t.Lastname
     , t.id
  FROM mytable t
  JOIN ( SELECT MAX(mx.id) AS max_id
           FROM mytable mx
       ) m
    ON m.max_id = t.id

This is just one way to get the specified result. There are several other approaches to get the same result, and some of those can be much less efficient than others. Other answers demonstrate this approach:

 WHERE t.id = (SELECT MAX(id) FROM ... )

Sometimes, the simplest approach is to use an ORDER BY with a LIMIT. (Note that this syntax is specific to MySQL)

SELECT t.firstName
     , t.Lastname
     , t.id
  FROM mytable t
 ORDER BY t.id DESC
 LIMIT 1

Note that this will return only one row; so if there is more than one row with the same id value, then this won't return all of them. (The first query will return ALL the rows that have the same id value.)

This approach can be extended to get more than one row, you could get the five rows that have the highest id values by changing it to LIMIT 5.

Note that performance of this approach is particularly dependent on a suitable index being available (i.e. with id as the PRIMARY KEY or as the leading column in another index.) A suitable index will improve performance of queries using all of these approaches.

Redirecting to a page after submitting form in HTML

What you could do is, a validation of the values, for example:

if the value of the input of fullanme is greater than some value length and if the value of the input of address is greater than some value length then redirect to a new page, otherwise shows an error for the input.

Percentage width in a RelativeLayout

Update

As pointed by @EmJiHash PercentRelativeLayout and PercentFrameLayout is deprecated in API level 26.0.0

Consider Using ConstraintLayout

Google introduced new API called android.support.percent

1)PercentRelativeLayout

2)PercentFrameLayout

Add compile dependency like

compile 'com.android.support:percent:23.1.1'

You can specify dimension in percentage so get both benefit of RelativeLayout and percentage

 <android.support.percent.PercentRelativeLayout
         xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
         xmlns:app="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto"
         android:layout_width="match_parent"
         android:layout_height="match_parent"/>
     <TextView
         app:layout_widthPercent="40%"
         app:layout_heightPercent="40%"
         app:layout_marginTopPercent="15%"
         app:layout_marginLeftPercent="15%"/>
 </android.support.percent.PercentRelativeLayout/>

Converting HTML element to string in JavaScript / JQuery

Try a slight different approach:

//set string and append it as object
var myHtmlString = '<iframe id="myFrame" width="854" height="480" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/gYKqrjq5IjU?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>';
$('body').append(myHtmlString);

//as you noticed you can't just get it back
var myHtmlStringBack = $('#myFrame').html();
alert(myHtmlStringBack); // will be empty (a bug in jquery?) but...

//since an id was added to your iframe so you can retrieve its attributes back...
var width = $('#myFrame').attr('width');
var height = $('#myFrame').attr('height');
var src = $('#myFrame').attr('src');
var myReconstructedString = '<iframe id="myFrame" width="'+ width +'" height="'+ height +'" src="'+ src+'" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>';
alert(myReconstructedString);

How to get DATE from DATETIME Column in SQL?

Simply cast your timestamp AS DATE, like this:

SELECT CAST(tstamp AS DATE)

SQLFiddle Demo

In other words, your statement would look like this:

SELECT SUM(transaction_amount)
FROM mytable
WHERE Card_No='123'
  AND CAST(transaction_date AS DATE) = target_date

What is nice about CAST is that it works exactly the same on most SQL engines (SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL), and is much easier to remember how to use it. Methods using CONVERT() or TO_DATE() are specific to each SQL engine and make your code non-portable.

jQuery Scroll to Div

It is often required to move both body and html objects together.

$('html,body').animate({
   scrollTop: $("#divToBeScrolledTo").offset().top
});

ShiftyThomas is right:

$("#divToBeScrolledTo").offset().top + 10 // +10 (pixels) reduces the margin.

So to increase the margin use:

$("#divToBeScrolledTo").offset().top - 10 // -10 (pixels) would increase the margin between the top of your window and your element.

The Installer will make all the configuration changes needed for you.

How to change menu item text dynamically in Android

I would suggest keeping a reference within the activity to the Menu object you receive in onCreateOptionsMenu and then using that to retrieve the MenuItem that requires the change as and when you need it. For example, you could do something along the lines of the following:

public class YourActivity extends Activity {

  private Menu menu;
  private String inBedMenuTitle = "Set to 'In bed'";
  private String outOfBedMenuTitle = "Set to 'Out of bed'";
  private boolean inBed = false;

  @Override
  public boolean onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu) {
    super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu);

    // Create your menu...

    this.menu = menu;
    return true;
  }

  private void updateMenuTitles() {
    MenuItem bedMenuItem = menu.findItem(R.id.bedSwitch);
    if (inBed) {
      bedMenuItem.setTitle(outOfBedMenuTitle);
    } else {
      bedMenuItem.setTitle(inBedMenuTitle);
    }
  }

}

Alternatively, you can override onPrepareOptionsMenu to update the menu items each time the menu is displayed.

Convert a string to int using sql query

Also be aware that when converting from numeric string ie '56.72' to INT you may come up against a SQL error.

Conversion failed when converting the varchar value '56.72' to data type int.

To get around this just do two converts as follows:

STRING -> NUMERIC -> INT

or

SELECT CAST(CAST (MyVarcharCol AS NUMERIC(19,4)) AS INT)

When copying data from TableA to TableB, the conversion is implicit, so you dont need the second convert (if you are happy rounding down to nearest INT):

INSERT INTO TableB (MyIntCol)
SELECT CAST(MyVarcharCol AS NUMERIC(19,4)) as [MyIntCol]
FROM TableA

Usage of \b and \r in C

The characters will get send just like that to the underlying output device (in your case probably a terminal emulator).

It is up to the terminal's implementation then how those characters get actually displayed. For example, a bell (\a) could trigger a beep sound on some terminals, a flash of the screen on others, or it will be completely ignored. It all depends on how the terminal is configured.

What is the difference between Left, Right, Outer and Inner Joins?

At first you have to understand what does join do? We connect multiple table and get specific result from the joined tables. The simplest way to do this is cross join.

Lets say tableA has two column A and B. And tableB has three column C and D. If we apply cross join it will produce lot of meaningless row. Then we have to match using primary key to get actual data.

Left: it will return all records from left table and matched record from right table.

Right: it will return opposite to Left join. It will return all records from right table and matched records from left table.

Inner: This is like intersection. It will return only matched records from both table.

Outer: And this is like union. It will return all available record from both table.

Some times we don't need all of the data, and also we should need only common data or records. we can easily get it using these join methods. Remember left and right join also are outer join.

You can get all records just using cross join. But it could be expensive when it comes to millions of records. So make it simple by using left, right, inner or outer join.

Javascript geocoding from address to latitude and longitude numbers not working

Try using this instead:

var latitude = results[0].geometry.location.lat();
var longitude = results[0].geometry.location.lng();

It's bit hard to navigate Google's api but here is the relevant documentation.

One thing I had trouble finding was how to go in the other direction. From coordinates to an address. Here is the code I neded upp using. Please not that I also use jquery.

$.each(results[0].address_components, function(){
    $("#CreateDialog").find('input[name="'+ this.types+'"]').attr('value', this.long_name);
});

What I'm doing is to loop through all the returned address_components and test if their types match any input element names I have in a form. And if they do I set the value of the element to the address_components value.
If you're only interrested in the whole formated address then you can follow Google's example

How To Get Selected Value From UIPickerView

Join two data frames, select all columns from one and some columns from the other

Not sure if the most efficient way, but this worked for me:

from pyspark.sql.functions import col

df1.alias('a').join(df2.alias('b'),col('b.id') == col('a.id')).select([col('a.'+xx) for xx in a.columns] + [col('b.other1'),col('b.other2')])

The trick is in:

[col('a.'+xx) for xx in a.columns] : all columns in a

[col('b.other1'),col('b.other2')] : some columns of b

How to serialize a JObject without the formatting?

you can use JsonConvert.SerializeObject()

Convert a String to a byte array and then back to the original String

I would suggest using the members of string, but with an explicit encoding:

byte[] bytes = text.getBytes("UTF-8");
String text = new String(bytes, "UTF-8");

By using an explicit encoding (and one which supports all of Unicode) you avoid the problems of just calling text.getBytes() etc:

  • You're explicitly using a specific encoding, so you know which encoding to use later, rather than relying on the platform default.
  • You know it will support all of Unicode (as opposed to, say, ISO-Latin-1).

EDIT: Even though UTF-8 is the default encoding on Android, I'd definitely be explicit about this. For example, this question only says "in Java or Android" - so it's entirely possible that the code will end up being used on other platforms.

Basically given that the normal Java platform can have different default encodings, I think it's best to be absolutely explicit. I've seen way too many people using the default encoding and losing data to take that risk.

EDIT: In my haste I forgot to mention that you don't have to use the encoding's name - you can use a Charset instead. Using Guava I'd really use:

byte[] bytes = text.getBytes(Charsets.UTF_8);
String text = new String(bytes, Charsets.UTF_8);

Unable to Install Any Package in Visual Studio 2015

I had this problem with Visual Studio 2017: It turns out that there are two class library projects - one for .Net and the other for C#. I created the one for .Net and when I tried to install a specific package (Nunit in my case) I got the error message.

Recreating the project as C# class library fixed the problem

C++: Where to initialize variables in constructor

In short, always prefer initialization lists when possible. 2 reasons:

  • If you do not mention a variable in a class's initialization list, the constructor will default initialize it before entering the body of the constructor you've written. This means that option 2 will lead to each variable being written to twice, once for the default initialization and once for the assignment in the constructor body.

  • Also, as mentioned by mwigdahl and avada in other answers, const members and reference members can only be initialized in an initialization list.

Also note that variables are always initialized on the order they are declared in the class declaration, not in the order they are listed in an initialization list (with proper warnings enabled a compiler will warn you if a list is written out of order). Similarly, destructors will call member destructors in the opposite order, last to first in the class declaration, after the code in your class's destructor has executed.

if (ref.substr(0, 2) == "F0")
     ref = ref.substr(2);

How can I loop through a C++ map of maps?

Do something like this:

typedef std::map<std::string, std::string> InnerMap;
typedef std::map<std::string, InnerMap> OuterMap;

Outermap mm;

...//set the initial values

for (OuterMap::iterator i = mm.begin(); i != mm.end(); ++i) {
    InnerMap &im = i->second;
    for (InnerMap::iterator ii = im.begin(); ii != im.end(); ++ii) {
        std::cout << "map["
                  << i->first
                  << "]["
                  << ii->first
                  << "] ="
                  << ii->second
                  << '\n';
    }
}

Parse v. TryParse

TryParse and the Exception Tax

Parse throws an exception if the conversion from a string to the specified datatype fails, whereas TryParse explicitly avoids throwing an exception.

JAXB: how to marshall map into <key>value</key>

(Sorry, can't add comments)

In Blaise's answer above, if you change:

@XmlJavaTypeAdapter(MapAdapter.class)
public Map<String, String> getMapProperty() {
    return mapProperty;
}

to:

@XmlJavaTypeAdapter(MapAdapter.class)
@XmlPath(".") // <<-- add this
public Map<String, String> getMapProperty() {
    return mapProperty;
}

then this should get rid of the <mapProperty> tag, and so give you:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<root>
    <map>
        <key>value</key>
        <key2>value2</key2>
    </map>
</root>

ALTERNATIVELY:

You can also change it to:

@XmlJavaTypeAdapter(MapAdapter.class)
@XmlAnyElement // <<-- add this
public Map<String, String> getMapProperty() {
    return mapProperty;
}

and then you can get rid of AdaptedMap altogether, and just change MapAdapter to marshall to a Document object directly. I've only tested this with marshalling, so there may be unmarshalling issues.

I'll try and find the time to knock up a full example of this, and edit this post accordingly.

How to get the employees with their managers

Perhaps your subquery (SELECT ename FROM EMP WHERE empno = mgr) thinks, give me the employee records that are their own managers! (i.e., where the empno of a row is the same as the mgr of the same row.)

have you considered perhaps rewriting this to use an inner (self) join? (I'm asking, becuase i'm not even sure if the following will work or not.)

SELECT t1.ename, t1.empno, t2.ename as MANAGER, t1.mgr
from emp as t1
inner join emp t2 ON t1.mgr = t2.empno
order by t1.empno;

How to set width of a p:column in a p:dataTable in PrimeFaces 3.0?

I just did the following (in V 3.5) and it worked like a charm:

DLL and LIB files - what and why?

One important reason for creating a DLL/LIB rather than just compiling the code into an executable is reuse and relocation. The average Java or .NET application (for example) will most likely use several 3rd party (or framework) libraries. It is much easier and faster to just compile against a pre-built library, rather than having to compile all of the 3rd party code into your application. Compiling your code into libraries also encourages good design practices, e.g. designing your classes to be used in different types of applications.

Beginner question: returning a boolean value from a function in Python

Ignoring the refactoring issues, you need to understand functions and return values. You don't need a global at all. Ever. You can do this:

def rps():
    # Code to determine if player wins
    if player_wins:
        return True

    return False

Then, just assign a value to the variable outside this function like so:

player_wins = rps()

It will be assigned the return value (either True or False) of the function you just called.

After the comments, I decided to add that idiomatically, this would be better expressed thus:

 def rps():
     # Code to determine if player wins, assigning a boolean value (True or False)
     # to the variable player_wins.

     return player_wins

 pw = rps()

This assigns the boolean value of player_wins (inside the function) to the pw variable outside the function.

Is there a Python Library that contains a list of all the ascii characters?

Since ASCII printable characters are a pretty small list (bytes with values between 32 and 127), it's easy enough to generate when you need:

>>> for c in (chr(i) for i in range(32,127)):
...     print c
...

!

#
$
%
... # a few lines removed :)

What does the C++ standard state the size of int, long type to be?

There are four types of integers based on size:

  • short integer: 2 byte
  • long integer: 4 byte
  • long long integer: 8 byte
  • integer: depends upon the compiler (16 bit, 32 bit, or 64 bit)

How to tell when UITableView has completed ReloadData?

I use this trick, pretty sure I already posted it to a duplicate of this question:

-(void)tableViewDidLoadRows:(UITableView *)tableView{
    // do something after loading, e.g. select a cell.
}

- (NSInteger)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView numberOfRowsInSection:(NSInteger)section
{
    // trick to detect when table view has finished loading.
    [NSObject cancelPreviousPerformRequestsWithTarget:self selector:@selector(tableViewDidLoadRows:) object:tableView];
    [self performSelector:@selector(tableViewDidLoadRows:) withObject:tableView afterDelay:0];

    // specific to your controller
    return self.objects.count;
}

How to check a string for specific characters?

user Jochen Ritzel said this in a comment to an answer to this question from user dappawit. It should work:

('1' in var) and ('2' in var) and ('3' in var) ...

'1', '2', etc. should be replaced with the characters you are looking for.

See this page in the Python 2.7 documentation for some information on strings, including about using the in operator for substring tests.

Update: This does the same job as my above suggestion with less repetition:

# When looking for single characters, this checks for any of the characters...
# ...since strings are collections of characters
any(i in '<string>' for i in '123')
# any(i in 'a' for i in '123') -> False
# any(i in 'b3' for i in '123') -> True

# And when looking for subsrings
any(i in '<string>' for i in ('11','22','33'))
# any(i in 'hello' for i in ('18','36','613')) -> False
# any(i in '613 mitzvahs' for i in ('18','36','613')) ->True

Code coverage with Mocha

Now (2021) the preferred way to use istanbul is via its "state of the art command line interface" nyc.

Setup

First, install it in your project with

npm i nyc --save-dev

Then, if you have a npm based project, just change the test script inside the scripts object of your package.json file to execute code coverage of your mocha tests:

{
  "scripts": {
    "test": "nyc --reporter=text mocha"
  }
}

Run

Now run your tests

npm test

and you will see a table like this in your console, just after your tests output:

Istanbul Nyc Mocha code coverage

Customization

Html report

Just use

nyc --reporter=html

instead of text. Now it will produce a report inside ./coverage/index.html.

Report formats

Istanbul supports a wide range of report formats. Just look at its reports library to find the most useful for you. Just add a --reporter=REPORTER_NAME option for each format you want. For example, with

nyc --reporter=html --reporter=text

you will have both the console and the html report.

Don't run coverage with npm test

Just add another script in your package.json and leave the test script with only your test runner (e.g. mocha):

{
  "scripts": {
    "test": "mocha",
    "test-with-coverage": "nyc --reporter=text mocha"
  }
}

Now run this custom script

npm run test-with-coverage

to run tests with code coverage.

Force test failing if code coverage is low

Fail if the total code coverage is below 90%:

nyc --check-coverage --lines 90

Fail if the code coverage of at least one file is below 90%:

nyc --check-coverage --lines 90 --per-file

What does SQL clause "GROUP BY 1" mean?

SELECT account_id, open_emp_id
         ^^^^        ^^^^
          1           2

FROM account
GROUP BY 1;

In above query GROUP BY 1 refers to the first column in select statement which is account_id.

You also can specify in ORDER BY.

Note : The number in ORDER BY and GROUP BY always start with 1 not with 0.

Only variables should be passed by reference

Try this:

$parts = explode('.', $file_name);
$file_extension = end($parts);

The reason is that the argument for end is passed by reference, since end modifies the array by advancing its internal pointer to the final element. If you're not passing a variable in, there's nothing for a reference to point to.

See end in the PHP manual for more info.

How to check if a number is between two values?

It's an old question, however might be useful for someone like me.

lodash has _.inRange() function https://lodash.com/docs/4.17.4#inRange

// => true

Please note that this method utilizes the Lodash utility library, and requires access to an installed version of Lodash.

How to build an android library with Android Studio and gradle?

I just had a very similar issues with gradle builds / adding .jar library. I got it working by a combination of :

  1. Moving the libs folder up to the root of the project (same directory as 'src'), and adding the library to this folder in finder (using Mac OS X)
  2. In Android Studio, Right-clicking on the folder to add as library
  3. Editing the dependencies in the build.gradle file, adding compile fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: '*.jar')}

BUT more importantly and annoyingly, only hours after I get it working, Android Studio have just released 0.3.7, which claims to have solved a lot of gradle issues such as adding .jar libraries

Graph visualization library in JavaScript

I've just put together what you may be looking for: http://www.graphdracula.net

It's JavaScript with directed graph layouting, SVG and you can even drag the nodes around. Still needs some tweaking, but is totally usable. You create nodes and edges easily with JavaScript code like this:

var g = new Graph();
g.addEdge("strawberry", "cherry");
g.addEdge("cherry", "apple");
g.addEdge("id34", "cherry");

I used the previously mentioned Raphael JS library (the graffle example) plus some code for a force based graph layout algorithm I found on the net (everything open source, MIT license). If you have any remarks or need a certain feature, I may implement it, just ask!

You may want to have a look at other projects, too! Below are two meta-comparisons:

  • SocialCompare has an extensive list of libraries, and the "Node / edge graph" line will filter for graph visualization ones.

  • DataVisualization.ch has evaluated many libraries, including node/graph ones. Unfortunately there's no direct link so you'll have to filter for "graph":Selection DataVisualization.ch

Here's a list of similar projects (some have been already mentioned here):

Pure JavaScript Libraries

  • vis.js supports many types of network/edge graphs, plus timelines and 2D/3D charts. Auto-layout, auto-clustering, springy physics engine, mobile-friendly, keyboard navigation, hierarchical layout, animation etc. MIT licensed and developed by a Dutch firm specializing in research on self-organizing networks.

  • Cytoscape.js - interactive graph analysis and visualization with mobile support, following jQuery conventions. Funded via NIH grants and developed by by @maxkfranz (see his answer below) with help from several universities and other organizations.

  • The JavaScript InfoVis Toolkit - Jit, an interactive, multi-purpose graph drawing and layout framework. See for example the Hyperbolic Tree. Built by Twitter dataviz architect Nicolas Garcia Belmonte and bought by Sencha in 2010.

  • D3.js Powerful multi-purpose JS visualization library, the successor of Protovis. See the force-directed graph example, and other graph examples in the gallery.

  • Plotly's JS visualization library uses D3.js with JS, Python, R, and MATLAB bindings. See a nexworkx example in IPython here, human interaction example here, and JS Embed API.

  • sigma.js Lightweight but powerful library for drawing graphs

  • jsPlumb jQuery plug-in for creating interactive connected graphs

  • Springy - a force-directed graph layout algorithm

  • Processing.js Javascript port of the Processing library by John Resig

  • JS Graph It - drag'n'drop boxes connected by straight lines. Minimal auto-layout of the lines.

  • RaphaelJS's Graffle - interactive graph example of a generic multi-purpose vector drawing library. RaphaelJS can't layout nodes automatically; you'll need another library for that.

  • JointJS Core - David Durman's MPL-licensed open source diagramming library. It can be used to create either static diagrams or fully interactive diagramming tools and application builders. Works in browsers supporting SVG. Layout algorithms not-included in the core package

  • mxGraph Previously commercial HTML 5 diagramming library, now available under Apache v2.0. mxGraph is the base library used in draw.io.

Commercial libraries

Abandoned libraries

  • Cytoscape Web Embeddable JS Network viewer (no new features planned; succeeded by Cytoscape.js)

  • Canviz JS renderer for Graphviz graphs. Abandoned in Sep 2013.

  • arbor.js Sophisticated graphing with nice physics and eye-candy. Abandoned in May 2012. Several semi-maintained forks exist.

  • jssvggraph "The simplest possible force directed graph layout algorithm implemented as a Javascript library that uses SVG objects". Abandoned in 2012.

  • jsdot Client side graph drawing application. Abandoned in 2011.

  • Protovis Graphical Toolkit for Visualization (JavaScript). Replaced by d3.

  • Moo Wheel Interactive JS representation for connections and relations (2008)

  • JSViz 2007-era graph visualization script

  • dagre Graph layout for JavaScript

Non-Javascript Libraries

Karma: Running a single test file from command line

Even though --files is no longer supported, you can use an env variable to provide a list of files:

// karma.conf.js
function getSpecs(specList) {
  if (specList) {
    return specList.split(',')
  } else {
    return ['**/*_spec.js'] // whatever your default glob is
  }
}

module.exports = function(config) {
  config.set({
    //...
    files: ['app.js'].concat(getSpecs(process.env.KARMA_SPECS))
  });
});

Then in CLI:

$ env KARMA_SPECS="spec1.js,spec2.js" karma start karma.conf.js --single-run

Debug JavaScript in Eclipse

I don't believe Eclipse has a JavaScript debugger - those breakpoints are for Java code (I'm guessing you are editing a JSP file?)

Use Firebug to debug Javascript code, it's an excellent add-on that all web developers should have in their toolbox.

Working with SQL views in Entity Framework Core

The EF Core doesn't create DBset for the SQL views automatically in the context calss, we can add them manually as below.

public partial class LocalDBContext : DbContext
{

    public LocalDBContext(DbContextOptions<LocalDBContext> options) : base(options)
    {

    }

    public virtual DbSet<YourView> YourView { get; set; }

    protected override void OnModelCreating(ModelBuilder modelBuilder)
    {
        modelBuilder.Entity<YourView>(entity => {
            entity.HasKey(e => e.ID);
            entity.ToTable("YourView");
            entity.Property(e => e.Name).HasMaxLength(50);
        });
    }

}

The sample view is defined as below with few properties

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;

namespace Project.Entities
{
    public partial class YourView
    {
        public string Name { get; set; }
        public int ID { get; set; }
    }
}

After adding a class for the view and DB set in the context class, you are good to use the view object through your context object in the controller.

How the single threaded non blocking IO model works in Node.js

Node.js uses libuv behind the scenes. libuv has a thread pool (of size 4 by default). Therefore Node.js does use threads to achieve concurrency.

However, your code runs on a single thread (i.e., all of the callbacks of Node.js functions will be called on the same thread, the so called loop-thread or event-loop). When people say "Node.js runs on a single thread" they are really saying "the callbacks of Node.js run on a single thread".

Increase max execution time for php

Why are my PHP files showing as plain text?

You'll need to add this to your server configuration:

AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

That is assuming you have installed PHP properly, which may not be the case since it doesn't work where it normally would immediately after installing.

It is entirely possible that you'll also have to add the php .so/.dll file to your Apache configuration using a LoadModule directive (usually in httpd.conf).

How can you customize the numbers in an ordered list?

Quick and dirt alternative solution. You can use a tabulation character along with preformatted text. Here's a possibility:

<style type="text/css">
ol {
    list-style-position: inside;
}
li:first-letter {
    white-space: pre;
}
</style>

and your html:

<ol>
<li>    an item</li>
<li>    another item</li>
...
</ol>

Note that the space between the li tag and the beggining of the text is a tabulation character (what you get when you press the tab key inside notepad).

If you need to support older browsers, you can do this instead:

<style type="text/css">
ol {
    list-style-position: inside;
}
</style>

<ol>
    <li><pre>   </pre>an item</li>
    <li><pre>   </pre>another item</li>
    ...
</ol>

Remove certain characters from a string

You can use Replace function as;

--Results
'Your String with xyz here'

If you apply this to a table column where stringColumnName, cityName both are columns of YourTable

SELECT REPLACE(stringColumnName, cityName, '')

Or if you want to remove 'cityName' string from out put of a column then

SELECT REPLACE(stringColumnName, 'cityName', '')

How can I copy the output of a command directly into my clipboard?

Linux & Windows (WSL)

When using the Windows Subsystem for Linux (e.g. Ubuntu/Debian on WSL) the xclip solution won't work. Instead you need to use clip.exe and powershell.exe to copy into and paste from the Windows clipboard.

.bashrc

This solution works on "real" Linux-based systems (i.e. Ubuntu, Debian) as well as on WSL systems. Just put the following code into your .bashrc:

if grep -q -i microsoft /proc/version; then
    # on WSL
    alias copy="clip.exe"
    alias paste="powershell.exe Get-Clipboard"
else
    # on "normal" linux
    alias copy="xclip -sel clip"
    alias paste="xclip -sel clip -o"
fi

How it works

The file /proc/version contains information about the currently running OS. When the system is running in WSL mode, then this file additionally contains the string Microsoft which is checked by grep.

Usage

To copy:

cat file | copy

And to paste:

paste > new_file

How to check if a String is numeric in Java

This is generally done with a simple user-defined function (i.e. Roll-your-own "isNumeric" function).

Something like:

public static boolean isNumeric(String str) {
  try {
    Double.parseDouble(str);
    return true;
  } catch(NumberFormatException e){
    return false;
  }
}

However, if you're calling this function a lot, and you expect many of the checks to fail due to not being a number then performance of this mechanism will not be great, since you're relying upon exceptions being thrown for each failure, which is a fairly expensive operation.

An alternative approach may be to use a regular expression to check for validity of being a number:

public static boolean isNumeric(String str) {
  return str.matches("-?\\d+(\\.\\d+)?"); //match a number with optional '-' and decimal.
}

Be careful with the above RegEx mechanism, though, as it will fail if you're using non-Arabic digits (i.e. numerals other than 0 through to 9). This is because the "\d" part of the RegEx will only match [0-9] and effectively isn't internationally numerically aware. (Thanks to OregonGhost for pointing this out!)

Or even another alternative is to use Java's built-in java.text.NumberFormat object to see if, after parsing the string the parser position is at the end of the string. If it is, we can assume the entire string is numeric:

public static boolean isNumeric(String str) {
  NumberFormat formatter = NumberFormat.getInstance();
  ParsePosition pos = new ParsePosition(0);
  formatter.parse(str, pos);
  return str.length() == pos.getIndex();
}

Retrieve the position (X,Y) of an HTML element relative to the browser window

The correct approach is to use element.getBoundingClientRect():

var rect = element.getBoundingClientRect();
console.log(rect.top, rect.right, rect.bottom, rect.left);

Internet Explorer has supported this since as long as you are likely to care about and it was finally standardized in CSSOM Views. All other browsers adopted it a long time ago.

Some browsers also return height and width properties, though this is non-standard. If you're worried about older browser compatibility, check this answer's revisions for an optimised degrading implementation.

The values returned by element.getBoundingClientRect() are relative to the viewport. If you need it relative to another element, simply subtract one rectangle from the other:

var bodyRect = document.body.getBoundingClientRect(),
    elemRect = element.getBoundingClientRect(),
    offset   = elemRect.top - bodyRect.top;

alert('Element is ' + offset + ' vertical pixels from <body>');

What are some uses of template template parameters?

Here is a simple example taken from 'Modern C++ Design - Generic Programming and Design Patterns Applied' by Andrei Alexandrescu:

He uses a classes with template template parameters in order to implement the policy pattern:

// Library code
template <template <class> class CreationPolicy>
class WidgetManager : public CreationPolicy<Widget>
{
   ...
};

He explains: Typically, the host class already knows, or can easily deduce, the template argument of the policy class. In the example above, WidgetManager always manages objects of type Widget, so requiring the user to specify Widget again in the instantiation of CreationPolicy is redundant and potentially dangerous.In this case, library code can use template template parameters for specifying policies.

The effect is that the client code can use 'WidgetManager' in a more elegant way:

typedef WidgetManager<MyCreationPolicy> MyWidgetMgr;

Instead of the more cumbersome, and error prone way that a definition lacking template template arguments would have required:

typedef WidgetManager< MyCreationPolicy<Widget> > MyWidgetMgr;

Rotate and translate

There is no need for that, as you can use css 'writing-mode' with values 'vertical-lr' or 'vertical-rl' as desired.

How to search images from private 1.0 registry in docker?

As of v 0.7.0 of the private registry you can do:

$ curl -X GET http://localhost:5000/v1/search?q=postgresql

and you will get a json payload:

{"num_results": 1, "query": "postgresql", "results": [{"description": "", "name": "library/postgresql"}]}

to give more background here is how I started my registry:

docker run \
        -e SETTINGS_FLAVOR=local \
        -e STORAGE_PATH=/registry \
        -e SEARCH_BACKEND=sqlalchemy \
        -e LOGLEVEL=DEBUG \

Looking for a short & simple example of getters/setters in C#

Internally, getters and setters are just methods. When C# compiles, it generates methods for your getters and setters like this, for example:

public int get_MyProperty() { ... }
public void set_MyProperty(int value) { ... }

C# allows you to declare these methods using a short-hand syntax. The line below will be compiled into the methods above when you build your application.

public int MyProperty { get; set; }

or

private int myProperty;
public int MyProperty
{
    get { return myProperty; }
    set { myProperty = value; } // value is an implicit parameter containing the value being assigned to the property.
}

How to produce an csv output file from stored procedure in SQL Server

You can do this using OPENROWSET as suggested in this answer. Reposting Slogmeister Extrarodinare answer:

Use T-SQL

INSERT INTO OPENROWSET ('Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0','Text;Database=D:\;HDR=YES;FMT=Delimited','SELECT * FROM [FileName.csv]')
SELECT Field1, Field2, Field3 FROM DatabaseName

But, there are couple of caveats:

  1. You need to have the Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0 provider available. The Jet 4.0 provider will work, too, but it's ancient, so I used this one instead.

  2. The .CSV file will have to exist already. If you're using headers (HDR=YES), make sure the first line of the .CSV file is a delimited list of all the fields.

Tools to selectively Copy HTML+CSS+JS From A Specific Element of DOM

I gone through all the tools mentioned as answer here. But they give repeated, dirty HTML CSS with beautiful face you were staring up on. They don't give you JS.

What I do:

  1. First I filter ads which are not require on the page
  2. Then , save complete webpage along with linking resources.
  3. Remove unnecessary HTML, CSS and JS
  4. keep unlinking resources one-by-one carefully.

How to change my Git username in terminal?

usually the user name resides under git config

TempData keep() vs peek()

Keep() method marks the specified key in the dictionary for retention

You can use Keep() when prevent/hold the value depends on additional logic.

when you read TempData one’s and want to hold for another request then use keep method, so TempData can available for next request as above example.

How to use filter, map, and reduce in Python 3

The functionality of map and filter was intentionally changed to return iterators, and reduce was removed from being a built-in and placed in functools.reduce.

So, for filter and map, you can wrap them with list() to see the results like you did before.

>>> def f(x): return x % 2 != 0 and x % 3 != 0
...
>>> list(filter(f, range(2, 25)))
[5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23]
>>> def cube(x): return x*x*x
...
>>> list(map(cube, range(1, 11)))
[1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000]
>>> import functools
>>> def add(x,y): return x+y
...
>>> functools.reduce(add, range(1, 11))
55
>>>

The recommendation now is that you replace your usage of map and filter with generators expressions or list comprehensions. Example:

>>> def f(x): return x % 2 != 0 and x % 3 != 0
...
>>> [i for i in range(2, 25) if f(i)]
[5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23]
>>> def cube(x): return x*x*x
...
>>> [cube(i) for i in range(1, 11)]
[1, 8, 27, 64, 125, 216, 343, 512, 729, 1000]
>>>

They say that for loops are 99 percent of the time easier to read than reduce, but I'd just stick with functools.reduce.

Edit: The 99 percent figure is pulled directly from the What’s New In Python 3.0 page authored by Guido van Rossum.

How to find if element with specific id exists or not

getElementById

Return Value: An Element Object, representing an element with the specified ID. Returns null if no elements with the specified ID exists see: https://www.w3schools.com/jsref/met_document_getelementbyid.asp

Truthy vs Falsy

In JavaScript, a truthy value is a value that is considered true when evaluated in a Boolean context. All values are truthy unless they are defined as falsy (i.e., except for false, 0, "", null, undefined, and NaN). see: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Glossary/Truthy

When the dom element is not found in the document it will return null. null is a Falsy and can be used as boolean expression in the if statement.

var myElement = document.getElementById("myElement");
if(myElement){
  // Element exists
}

D3.js: How to get the computed width and height for an arbitrary element?

Once I faced with the issue when I did not know which the element currently stored in my variable (svg or html) but I needed to get it width and height. I created this function and want to share it:

function computeDimensions(selection) {
  var dimensions = null;
  var node = selection.node();

  if (node instanceof SVGGraphicsElement) { // check if node is svg element
    dimensions = node.getBBox();
  } else { // else is html element
    dimensions = node.getBoundingClientRect();
  }
  console.log(dimensions);
  return dimensions;
}

Little demo in the hidden snippet below. We handle click on the blue div and on the red svg circle with the same function.

  if (node instanceof SVGElement) {
    dimensions = node.getBBox();
  } else {
    dimensions = node.getBoundingClientRect();
  }
  console.clear();
  console.log(dimensions);
  return dimensions;
}

var circle = svg
    .append("circle")
    .attr("r", 20)
    .attr("cx", 30)
    .attr("cy", 30)
    .attr("fill", "red")
    .on("click", function() { computeDimensions(circle); });

var div = d3.selectAll("div").on("click", function() { computeDimensions(div) });

How to add text to JFrame?

Instead of wasting your time to design a JFrame just to display a error message, you can use an JOptionPane which is by default modal:

import javax.swing.JOptionPane;

public class Main {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Your message goes here!","Message", JOptionPane.ERROR_MESSAGE);
    }
}

P.S. Stop using Windowbuilder if you want to learn Swing.

How do you cache an image in Javascript

I have a similar answer for asynchronous preloading images via JS. Loading them dynamically is the same as loading them normally. they will cache.

as for caching, you can't control the browser but you can set it via server. if you need to load a really fresh resource on demand, you can use the cache buster technique to force load a fresh resource.

Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error

This error occurred to me when I was debugging the PHP header() function:

header('Location: /aaa/bbb/ccc'); // error

If I use a relative path it works:

header('Location: aaa/bbb/ccc'); // success, but not what I wanted

However when I use an absolute path like /aaa/bbb/ccc, it gives the exact error:

Request exceeded the limit of 10 internal redirects due to probable configuration error. Use 'LimitInternalRecursion' to increase the limit if necessary. Use 'LogLevel debug' to get a backtrace.

It appears the header function redirects internally without going HTTP at all which is weird. After some tests and trials, I found the solution of adding exit after header():

header('Location: /aaa/bbb/ccc');
exit;

And it works properly.

The $_GET variable is populated from the parameters set in the URL. From the URL http://example.com/test.php?foo=bar&baz=buzz you can get $_GET['foo'] and $_GET['baz']. So to set these variables, you only have to make a link to that URL.

Is it possible to use a div as content for Twitter's Popover

First of all, if you want to use HTML inside the content you need to set the HTML option to true:

$('.danger').popover({ html : true});

Then you have two options to set the content for a Popover

  • Use the data-content attribute. This is the default option.
  • Use a custom JS function which returns the HTML content.

Using data-content: You need to escape the HTML content, something like this:

<a class='danger' data-placement='above'
   data-content="&lt;div&gt;This is your div content&lt;/div&gt;"
   title="Title" href='#'>Click</a>

You can either escape the HTML manually or use a function. I don't know about PHP but in Rails we use *html_safe*.

Using a JS function: If you do this, you have several options. The easiest I think is to put your div content hidden wherever you want and then write a function to pass its content to popover. Something like this:

$(document).ready(function(){
  $('.danger').popover({
    html : true,
    content: function() {
      return $('#popover_content_wrapper').html();
    }
  });
});

And then your HTML looks like this:

<a class='danger' data-placement='above' title="Popover Title" href='#'>Click</a>
<div id="popover_content_wrapper" style="display: none">
  <div>This is your div content</div>
</div>

Hope it helps!

PS: I've had some troubles when using popover and not setting the title attribute... so, remember to always set the title.

Call a url from javascript

Yes, what you are asking for is called AJAX or XMLHttpRequest. You can either use a library like jQuery to simplify making the call (due to cross-browser compatibility issues), or write your own handler.

In jQuery:

$.GET('url.asp', {data: 'here'}, function(data){ /* what to do with the data returned */ })

In plain vanilla javaScript (from w3c):

var xmlhttp;
function loadXMLDoc(url)
{
    xmlhttp=null;
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
  {// code for all new browsers
      xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest();
  }
else if (window.ActiveXObject)
  {// code for IE5 and IE6
      xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP");
  }
if (xmlhttp!=null)
  {
      xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=state_Change;
      xmlhttp.open("GET",url,true);
      xmlhttp.send(null);
  }
else
  {
      alert("Your browser does not support XMLHTTP.");
  }
}

function state_Change()
{
    if (xmlhttp.readyState==4)
      {// 4 = "loaded"
          if (xmlhttp.status==200)
            {// 200 = OK
             //xmlhttp.data and shtuff
            // ...our code here...
        }
  else
        {
            alert("Problem retrieving data");
        }

Python: importing a sub-package or sub-module

You seem to be misunderstanding how import searches for modules. When you use an import statement it always searches the actual module path (and/or sys.modules); it doesn't make use of module objects in the local namespace that exist because of previous imports. When you do:

import package.subpackage.module
from package.subpackage import module
from module import attribute1

The second line looks for a package called package.subpackage and imports module from that package. This line has no effect on the third line. The third line just looks for a module called module and doesn't find one. It doesn't "re-use" the object called module that you got from the line above.

In other words from someModule import ... doesn't mean "from the module called someModule that I imported earlier..." it means "from the module named someModule that you find on sys.path...". There is no way to "incrementally" build up a module's path by importing the packages that lead to it. You always have to refer to the entire module name when importing.

It's not clear what you're trying to achieve. If you only want to import the particular object attribute1, just do from package.subpackage.module import attribute1 and be done with it. You need never worry about the long package.subpackage.module once you've imported the name you want from it.

If you do want to have access to the module to access other names later, then you can do from package.subpackage import module and, as you've seen you can then do module.attribute1 and so on as much as you like.

If you want both --- that is, if you want attribute1 directly accessible and you want module accessible, just do both of the above:

from package.subpackage import module
from package.subpackage.module import attribute1
attribute1 # works
module.someOtherAttribute # also works

If you don't like typing package.subpackage even twice, you can just manually create a local reference to attribute1:

from package.subpackage import module
attribute1 = module.attribute1
attribute1 # works
module.someOtherAttribute #also works

Transparent image - background color

If I understand you right, you can do this:

<img src="image.png" style="background-color:red;" />

In fact, you can even apply a whole background-image to the image, resulting in two "layers" without the need for multi-background support in the browser ;)

PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library

After Windows 10 XAMPP now I installed LAMPP (XAMPP) on Ubuntu. Windows XAMPP had a lot less to configure compare to MAC (iOS) but now with Linux Ubuntu I had a few more since there are more going in Linux (a good thing).

I confused and activated mysqli.dll (and mysql.dll: erase "#" in /etc/php/7.2/cli/php.ini

I started to get the PHP Warning: PHP Startup: Unable to load dynamic library message related to dll. I commented out mysql(and i).dll in the same file but the message didn't go away up until I commented out " " in /opt/lampp/etc/php.ini.

Looks like XAMPP reads php.ini file from /etc/php/7.2/cli and makes modification in php.ini of /opt/lampp/etc. (;extension=php_pdo_mysql.dll after ";" restarted Apache and no more any message.

Python multiprocessing PicklingError: Can't pickle <type 'function'>

As others have said multiprocessing can only transfer Python objects to worker processes which can be pickled. If you cannot reorganize your code as described by unutbu, you can use dills extended pickling/unpickling capabilities for transferring data (especially code data) as I show below.

This solution requires only the installation of dill and no other libraries as pathos:

import os
from multiprocessing import Pool

import dill

def run_dill_encoded(payload):
    fun, args = dill.loads(payload)
    return fun(*args)

def apply_async(pool, fun, args):
    payload = dill.dumps((fun, args))
    return pool.apply_async(run_dill_encoded, (payload,))

if __name__ == "__main__":

    pool = Pool(processes=5)

    # asyn execution of lambda
    jobs = []
    for i in range(10):
        job = apply_async(pool, lambda a, b: (a, b, a * b), (i, i + 1))
        jobs.append(job)

    for job in jobs:
        print job.get()
    print

    # async execution of static method

    class O(object):

        @staticmethod
        def calc():
            return os.getpid()

    jobs = []
    for i in range(10):
        job = apply_async(pool, O.calc, ())
        jobs.append(job)

    for job in jobs:
        print job.get()

What does a lazy val do?

Also lazy is useful without cyclic dependencies, as in the following code:

abstract class X {
  val x: String
  println ("x is "+x.length)
}

object Y extends X { val x = "Hello" }
Y

Accessing Y will now throw null pointer exception, because x is not yet initialized. The following, however, works fine:

abstract class X {
  val x: String
  println ("x is "+x.length)
}

object Y extends X { lazy val x = "Hello" }
Y

EDIT: the following will also work:

object Y extends { val x = "Hello" } with X

This is called an "early initializer". See this SO question for more details.

How to read a single char from the console in Java (as the user types it)?

I have written a Java class RawConsoleInput that uses JNA to call operating system functions of Windows and Unix/Linux.

  • On Windows it uses _kbhit() and _getwch() from msvcrt.dll.
  • On Unix it uses tcsetattr() to switch the console to non-canonical mode, System.in.available() to check whether data is available and System.in.read() to read bytes from the console. A CharsetDecoder is used to convert bytes to characters.

It supports non-blocking input and mixing raw mode and normal line mode input.

Facebook Open Graph Error - Inferred Property

Are those tags on 'http://www.mywebaddress.com'?

Bear in mind the linter will follow the og:url tag as this tag should point to the canonical URL of the piece of content - so if you have a page, e.g. 'http://mywebaddress.com/article1' with an og:url tag pointing to 'http://mywebaddress.com', Facebook will go there and read the tags there also.

Failing that, the most common reason i've seen for seemingly correct tags not being detected by the linter is user-agent detection returning different content to Facebook's crawler than the content you're seeing when you manually check

eval command in Bash and its typical uses

In the question:

who | grep $(tty | sed s:/dev/::)

outputs errors claiming that files a and tty do not exist. I understood this to mean that tty is not being interpreted before execution of grep, but instead that bash passed tty as a parameter to grep, which interpreted it as a file name.

There is also a situation of nested redirection, which should be handled by matched parentheses which should specify a child process, but bash is primitively a word separator, creating parameters to be sent to a program, therefore parentheses are not matched first, but interpreted as seen.

I got specific with grep, and specified the file as a parameter instead of using a pipe. I also simplified the base command, passing output from a command as a file, so that i/o piping would not be nested:

grep $(tty | sed s:/dev/::) <(who)

works well.

who | grep $(echo pts/3)

is not really desired, but eliminates the nested pipe and also works well.

In conclusion, bash does not seem to like nested pipping. It is important to understand that bash is not a new-wave program written in a recursive manner. Instead, bash is an old 1,2,3 program, which has been appended with features. For purposes of assuring backward compatibility, the initial manner of interpretation has never been modified. If bash was rewritten to first match parentheses, how many bugs would be introduced into how many bash programs? Many programmers love to be cryptic.

Paste multiple columns together

In my opinion the sprintf-function deserves a place among these answers as well. You can use sprintf as follows:

do.call(sprintf, c(d[cols], '%s-%s-%s'))

which gives:

 [1] "a-d-g" "b-e-h" "c-f-i"

And to create the required dataframe:

data.frame(a = d$a, x = do.call(sprintf, c(d[cols], '%s-%s-%s')))

giving:

  a     x
1 1 a-d-g
2 2 b-e-h
3 3 c-f-i

Although sprintf doesn't have a clear advantage over the do.call/paste combination of @BrianDiggs, it is especially usefull when you also want to pad certain parts of desired string or when you want to specify the number of digit. See ?sprintf for the several options.

Another variant would be to use pmap from :

pmap(d[2:4], paste, sep = '-')

Note: this pmap solution only works when the columns aren't factors.

A benchmark on a larger dataset:

# create a larger dataset
d2 <- d[sample(1:3,1e6,TRUE),]
# benchmark
library(microbenchmark)
microbenchmark(
  docp = do.call(paste, c(d2[cols], sep="-")),
  appl = apply( d2[, cols ] , 1 , paste , collapse = "-" ),
  tidr = tidyr::unite_(d2, "x", cols, sep="-")$x,
  docs = do.call(sprintf, c(d2[cols], '%s-%s-%s')),
  times=10)

results in:

Unit: milliseconds
 expr min lq mean median uq max neval cld
 docp  214.1786  226.2835  297.1487  241.6150  409.2495  493.5036    10 a
 appl 3832.3252 4048.9320 4131.6906 4072.4235 4255.1347 4486.9787    10   c
 tidr  206.9326  216.8619  275.4556  252.1381  318.4249  407.9816    10 a
 docs  413.9073  443.1550  490.6520  453.1635  530.1318  659.8400    10  b

Used data:

d <- data.frame(a = 1:3, b = c('a','b','c'), c = c('d','e','f'), d = c('g','h','i'))

Javascript date regex DD/MM/YYYY

You could take the regex that validates YYYY/MM/DD and flip it around to get what you need for DD/MM/YYYY:

/^(0?[1-9]|[12][0-9]|3[01])[\/\-](0?[1-9]|1[012])[\/\-]\d{4}$/

BTW - this regex validates for either DD/MM/YYYY or DD-MM-YYYY

P.S. This will allow dates such as 31/02/4899

PySpark 2.0 The size or shape of a DataFrame

Add this to the your code:

import pyspark
def spark_shape(self):
    return (self.count(), len(self.columns))
pyspark.sql.dataframe.DataFrame.shape = spark_shape

Then you can do

>>> df.shape()
(10000, 10)

But just remind you that .count() can be very slow for very large table that has not been persisted.

Binding to static property

These answers are all good if you want to follow good conventions but the OP wanted something simple, which is what I wanted too instead of dealing with GUI design patterns. If all you want to do is have a string in a basic GUI app you can update ad-hoc without anything fancy, you can just access it directly in your C# source.

Let's say you've got a really basic WPF app MainWindow XAML like this,

<Window x:Class="MyWPFApp.MainWindow"
            xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
            xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
            xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008"
            xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006"
            xmlns:local="clr-namespace:MyWPFApp"
            mc:Ignorable="d"
            Title="MainWindow"
            Height="200"
            Width="400"
            Background="White" >
    <Grid>
        <TextBlock x:Name="textBlock"
                       Text=".."
                       HorizontalAlignment="Center"
                       VerticalAlignment="Top"
                       FontWeight="Bold"
                       FontFamily="Helvetica"
                       FontSize="16"
                       Foreground="Blue" Margin="0,10,0,0"
             />
        <Button x:Name="Find_Kilroy"
                    Content="Poke Kilroy"
                    Click="Button_Click_Poke_Kilroy"
                    HorizontalAlignment="Center"
                    VerticalAlignment="Center"
                    FontFamily="Helvetica"
                    FontWeight="Bold"
                    FontSize="14"
                    Width="280"
            />
    </Grid>
</Window>

That will look something like this:

enter image description here

In your MainWindow XAML's source, you could have something like this where all we're doing in changing the value directly via textBlock.Text's get/set functionality:

using System.Windows;

namespace MyWPFApp
{
    public partial class MainWindow : Window
    {
        public MainWindow() { InitializeComponent(); }

        private void Button_Click_Poke_Kilroy(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e)
        {
            textBlock.Text = "              \\|||/\r\n" +
                             "              (o o) \r\n" +
                             "----ooO- (_) -Ooo----";
        }
    }
}

Then when you trigger that click event by clicking the button, voila! Kilroy appears :)

Select distinct values from a table field

In addition to the still very relevant answer of jujule, I find it quite important to also be aware of the implications of order_by() on distinct("field_name") queries. This is, however, a Postgres only feature!

If you are using Postgres and if you define a field name that the query should be distinct for, then order_by() needs to begin with the same field name (or field names) in the same sequence (there may be more fields afterward).

Note

When you specify field names, you must provide an order_by() in the QuerySet, and the fields in order_by() must start with the fields in distinct(), in the same order.

For example, SELECT DISTINCT ON (a) gives you the first row for each value in column a. If you don’t specify an order, you’ll get some arbitrary row.

If you want to e-g- extract a list of cities that you know shops in , the example of jujule would have to be adapted to this:

# returns an iterable Queryset of cities.
models.Shop.objects.order_by('city').values_list('city', flat=True).distinct('city')

Add CSS to <head> with JavaScript?

If you don't want to rely on a javascript library, you can use document.write() to spit out the required css, wrapped in style tags, straight into the document head:

<head>
  <script type="text/javascript">
    document.write("<style>body { background-color:#000 }</style>");
  </script>
  # other stuff..
</head>

This way you avoid firing an extra HTTP request.

There are other solutions that have been suggested / added / removed, but I don't see any point in overcomplicating something that already works fine cross-browser. Good luck!

MySQL trigger if condition exists

I think you mean to update it back to the OLD password, when the NEW one is not supplied.

DROP TRIGGER IF EXISTS upd_user;

DELIMITER $$

    CREATE TRIGGER upd_user BEFORE UPDATE ON `user`
    FOR EACH ROW BEGIN
      IF (NEW.password IS NULL OR NEW.password = '') THEN
            SET NEW.password = OLD.password;
      ELSE
            SET NEW.password = Password(NEW.Password);
      END IF;
    END$$

DELIMITER ;

However, this means a user can never blank out a password.

If the password field (already encrypted) is being sent back in the update to mySQL, then it will not be null or blank, and MySQL will attempt to redo the Password() function on it. To detect this, use this code instead

DELIMITER $$

    CREATE TRIGGER upd_user BEFORE UPDATE ON `user`
    FOR EACH ROW BEGIN
      IF (NEW.password IS NULL OR NEW.password = '' OR NEW.password = OLD.password) THEN
            SET NEW.password = OLD.password;
      ELSE
            SET NEW.password = Password(NEW.Password);
      END IF;
    END$$

DELIMITER ;

Definition of "downstream" and "upstream"

Upstream Called Harmful

There is, alas, another use of "upstream" that the other answers here are not getting at, namely to refer to the parent-child relationship of commits within a repo. Scott Chacon in the Pro Git book is particularly prone to this, and the results are unfortunate. Do not imitate this way of speaking.

For example, he says of a merge resulting a fast-forward that this happens because

the commit pointed to by the branch you merged in was directly upstream of the commit you’re on

He wants to say that commit B is the only child of the only child of ... of the only child of commit A, so to merge B into A it is sufficient to move the ref A to point to commit B. Why this direction should be called "upstream" rather than "downstream", or why the geometry of such a pure straight-line graph should be described "directly upstream", is completely unclear and probably arbitrary. (The man page for git-merge does a far better job of explaining this relationship when it says that "the current branch head is an ancestor of the named commit." That is the sort of thing Chacon should have said.)

Indeed, Chacon himself appears to use "downstream" later to mean exactly the same thing, when he speaks of rewriting all child commits of a deleted commit:

You must rewrite all the commits downstream from 6df76 to fully remove this file from your Git history

Basically he seems not to have any clear idea what he means by "upstream" and "downstream" when referring to the history of commits over time. This use is informal, then, and not to be encouraged, as it is just confusing.

It is perfectly clear that every commit (except one) has at least one parent, and that parents of parents are thus ancestors; and in the other direction, commits have children and descendants. That's accepted terminology, and describes the directionality of the graph unambiguously, so that's the way to talk when you want to describe how commits relate to one another within the graph geometry of a repo. Do not use "upstream" or "downstream" loosely in this situation.

[Additional note: I've been thinking about the relationship between the first Chacon sentence I cite above and the git-merge man page, and it occurs to me that the former may be based on a misunderstanding of the latter. The man page does go on to describe a situation where the use of "upstream" is legitimate: fast-forwarding often happens when "you are tracking an upstream repository, you have committed no local changes, and now you want to update to a newer upstream revision." So perhaps Chacon used "upstream" because he saw it here in the man page. But in the man page there is a remote repository; there is no remote repository in Chacon's cited example of fast-forwarding, just a couple of locally created branches.]

{
    if (!fechaHora.HasValue)
        return "";

    return retornar = String.Format("{0:HH:mm}", (DateTime)fechaHora);
}

Double check your manifest, your first activity should have tag

    <intent-filter>
        <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
    </intent-filter>

inside of activity tag.

If that doesn't work, look for target build, which located in the left of run button (green-colored play button), it should be targeting "app" folder, not a particular activity. if it doesn't targeting "app", just click it and choose "app" from drop down list.

Hope it helps!
