Compiling an application for use in highly radioactive environments

This is an extremely broad subject. Basically, you can't really recover from memory corruption, but you can at least try to fail promptly. Here are a few techniques you could use:

  • checksum constant data. If you have any configuration data which stays constant for a long time (including hardware registers you have configured), compute its checksum on initialization and verify it periodically. When you see a mismatch, it's time to re-initialize or reset.

  • store variables with redundancy. If you have an important variable x, write its value in x1, x2 and x3 and read it as (x1 == x2) ? x2 : x3.

  • implement program flow monitoring. XOR a global flag with a unique value in important functions/branches called from the main loop. Running the program in a radiation-free environment with near-100% test coverage should give you the list of acceptable values of the flag at the end of the cycle. Reset if you see deviations.

  • monitor the stack pointer. In the beginning of the main loop, compare the stack pointer with its expected value. Reset on deviation.

How to catch all exceptions in c# using try and catch?

try
{

..
..
..

}

catch(Exception ex)
{

..
..
..

}

the Exception ex means all the exceptions.

Throwing exceptions from constructors

It is OK to throw from your constructor, but you should make sure that your object is constructed after main has started and before it finishes:

class A
{
public:
  A () {
    throw int ();
  }
};

A a; // Implementation defined behaviour if exception is thrown (15.3/13)

int main ()
{
  try
  {
    // Exception for 'a' not caught here.
  }
  catch (int)
  {
  }
}

How to convert a string to integer in C?

Robust C89 strtol-based solution

With:

  • no undefined behavior (as could be had with the atoi family)
  • a stricter definition of integer than strtol (e.g. no leading whitespace nor trailing trash chars)
  • classification of the error case (e.g. to give useful error messages to users)
  • a "testsuite"

How can I disable HREF if onclick is executed?

You can use the first un-edited solution, if you put return first in the onclick attribute:

<a href="https://example.com/no-js-login" onclick="return yes_js_login();">Log in</a>

yes_js_login = function() {
     // Your code here
     return false;
}

How do I replace multiple spaces with a single space in C#?

I like to use:

myString = Regex.Replace(myString, @"\s+", " ");

Since it will catch runs of any kind of whitespace (e.g. tabs, newlines, etc.) and replace them with a single space.

How do I mock a REST template exchange?

I implemented a small library that is quite useful. It provides a ClientHttpRequestFactory that can receive some context. By doing so, it allows to go through all client layers such as checking that query parameters are valued, headers set, and check that deserialization works well.

Store output of subprocess.Popen call in a string

I wrote a little function based on the other answers here:

def pexec(*args):
    return subprocess.Popen(args, stdout=subprocess.PIPE).communicate()[0].rstrip()

Usage:

changeset = pexec('hg','id','--id')
branch = pexec('hg','id','--branch')
revnum = pexec('hg','id','--num')
print('%s : %s (%s)' % (revnum, changeset, branch))

HTML table needs spacing between columns, not rows

If you can use inline styling, you can set the left and right padding on each td.. Or you use an extra td between columns and set a number of non-breaking spaces as @rene kindly suggested.

Finding diff between current and last version

If the top commit is pointed to by HEAD then you can do something like this:

commit1 -> HEAD
commit2 -> HEAD~1
commit3 -> HEAD~2

Diff between the first and second commit:

git diff HEAD~1 HEAD

Diff between first and third commit:

git diff HEAD~2 HEAD

Diff between second and third commit:

git diff HEAD~2 HEAD~1

And so on...

Center align a column in twitter bootstrap

The question is correctly answered here Center a column using Twitter Bootstrap 3

For odd rows: i.e., col-md-7 or col-large-9 use this

Add col-centered to the column you want centered.

<div class="col-lg-11 col-centered">

And add this to your stylesheet:

.col-centered{
float: none;
margin: 0 auto;
}

For even rows: i.e., col-md-6 or col-large-10 use this

Simply use bootstrap 3's offset col class. i.e.,

<div class="col-lg-10 col-lg-offset-1">

Cannot implicitly convert type from Task<>

Depending on what you're trying to do, you can either block with GetIdList().Result ( generally a bad idea, but it's hard to tell the context) or use a test framework that supports async test methods and have the test method do var results = await GetIdList();

How to convert a string with comma-delimited items to a list in Python?

To convert a string having the form a="[[1, 3], [2, -6]]" I wrote yet not optimized code:

matrixAr = []
mystring = "[[1, 3], [2, -4], [19, -15]]"
b=mystring.replace("[[","").replace("]]","") # to remove head [[ and tail ]]
for line in b.split('], ['):
    row =list(map(int,line.split(','))) #map = to convert the number from string (some has also space ) to integer
    matrixAr.append(row)
print matrixAr

Starting ssh-agent on Windows 10 fails: "unable to start ssh-agent service, error :1058"

I solved the problem by changing the StartupType of the ssh-agent to Manual via Set-Service ssh-agent -StartupType Manual.

Then I was able to start the service via Start-Service ssh-agent or just ssh-agent.exe.

check if file exists on remote host with ssh

ssh -q $HOST [[ -f $FILE_PATH ]] && echo "File exists"

The above will run the echo command on the machine you're running the ssh command from. To get the remote server to run the command:

ssh -q $HOST "[[ ! -f $FILE_PATH ]] && touch $FILE_PATH"

How do I convert ticks to minutes?

A single tick represents one hundred nanoseconds or one ten-millionth of a second. FROM MSDN.

So 28 000 000 000 * 1/10 000 000 = 2 800 sec. 2 800 sec /60 = 46.6666min

Or you can do it programmaticly with TimeSpan:

    static void Main()
    {
        TimeSpan ts = TimeSpan.FromTicks(28000000000);
        double minutesFromTs = ts.TotalMinutes;
        Console.WriteLine(minutesFromTs);
        Console.Read();
    }

Both give me 46 min and not 480 min...

How to resize an Image C#

This code is same as posted from one of above answers.. but will convert transparent pixel to white instead of black ... Thanks:)

How do I compare two Integers?

I would go with x.equals(y) because that's consistent way to check equality for all classes.

As far as performance goes, equals is actually more expensive because it ends up calling intValue().

EDIT: You should avoid autoboxing in most cases. It can get really confusing, especially the author doesn't know what he was doing. You can try this code and you will be surprised by the result;

Integer a = 128;
Integer b = 128;

System.out.println(a==b);

ERROR: permission denied for relation tablename on Postgres while trying a SELECT as a readonly user

TSQL DATETIME ISO 8601

You technically have two options when speaking of ISO dates.

In general, if you're filtering specifically on Date values alone OR looking to persist date in a neutral fashion. Microsoft recommends using the language neutral format of ymd or y-m-d. Which are both valid ISO formats.

Note that the form '2007-02-12' is considered language-neutral only for the data types DATE, DATETIME2, and DATETIMEOFFSET.

Because of this, your safest bet is to persist/filter based on the always netural ymd format.

The code:

select convert(char(10), getdate(), 126) -- ISO YYYY-MM-DD
select convert(char(8), getdate(), 112) -- ISO YYYYMMDD (safest)

Import file size limit in PHPMyAdmin

I found the problem and am post hete if anyone followed some blog post out there to create the sort of enviromment I have (win 7 host with ubuntu and zend server ce on virtual box).

The thing is that MySQL is running on Lighttpd, not under Apache. So I had to change the php.ini file under that webserver as well which is in the path:

/usr/local/zend/gui/lighttpd/etc/php-fcgi.ini

In the end, you were right about the files, of course, but I was wrong on what file I had to change :)

Ruby on Rails: Clear a cached page

If you're doing fragment caching, you can manually break the cache by updating your cache key, like so:

Version #1

<% cache ['cool_name_for_cache_key', 'v1'] do %>

Version #2

<% cache ['cool_name_for_cache_key', 'v2'] do %>

Or you can have the cache automatically reset based on the state of a non-static object, such as an ActiveRecord object, like so:

<% cache @user_object do %>

With this ^ method, any time the user object is updated, the cache will automatically be reset.

Xcode project not showing list of simulators

I had this happen to me after an update to a new Xcode. Running

xcode-select --install

fixed it for me.

Eloquent get only one column as an array

You can use the pluck method:

Word_relation::where('word_one', $word_id)->pluck('word_two')->toArray();

For more info on what methods are available for using with collection, you can you can check out the Laravel Documentation.

Fastest way to download a GitHub project

Another faster way of downloading a GitHub project would be to use the clone functionality with the --depth argument as:

git clone --depth=1 [email protected]:organization/your-repo.git

to perform a shallow clone.

Can I set state inside a useEffect hook

Effects are always executed after the render phase is completed even if you setState inside the one effect, another effect will read the updated state and take action on it only after the render phase.

Having said that its probably better to take both actions in the same effect unless there is a possibility that b can change due to reasons other than changing a in which case too you would want to execute the same logic

PHP foreach loop through multidimensional array

<?php
$first = reset($arr_nav); // Get the first element
$last  = end($arr_nav);   // Get the last element
// Ensure that we have a first element and that it's an array
if(is_array($first)) {
   $first['class'] = 'first';
}
// Ensure we have a last element and that it differs from the first
if(is_array($last) && $last !== $first) {
   $last['class'] = 'last';
}

Now you could just echo the class inside you html-generator. Would probably need some kind of check to ensure that the class is set, or provide a default empty class to the array.

Android Studio Emulator and "Process finished with exit code 0"

In AVD Manager,

Go to Edit Icon on AVD Manager for selected Device.

Click on show advanced settings and increase ram size from 1500 mb to 2 GB.

Then it works.

NOTE: Some virtual devices do not allow you to update RAM, but if so, try installing Nexus 4. because it does.

NOTE2: If still doesnt work, dont give up. just uninstall and reinstall the device with changing RAM again. in some cases this is how it works

NOTE3: If still doesnt work, this means your pc doesnt have enough ram space. so increase the ram to 3gb. it might work but it will suffer

NOTE4: If still doesnt work, try it with multicore 2 instead of 4.

NOTE5: Still doesnt work. Close the Android Studio and NEVER open it back :)

Monitoring the Full Disclosure mailinglist

Two generic ways to do the same thing... I'm not aware of any specific open solutions to do this, but it'd be rather trivial to do.

You could write a daily or weekly cron/jenkins job to scrape the previous time period's email from the archive looking for your keyworkds/combinations. Sending a batch digest with what it finds, if anything.

But personally, I'd Setup a specific email account to subscribe to the various security lists you're interested in. Add a simple automated script to parse the new emails for various keywords or combinations of keywords, when it finds a match forward that email on to you/your team. Just be sure to keep the keywords list updated with new products you're using.

You could even do this with a gmail account and custom rules, which is what I currently do, but I have setup an internal inbox in the past with a simple python script to forward emails that were of interest.

Overriding the java equals() method - not working?

Slightly off-topic to your question, but it's probably worth mentioning anyway:

Commons Lang has got some excellent methods you can use in overriding equals and hashcode. Check out EqualsBuilder.reflectionEquals(...) and HashCodeBuilder.reflectionHashCode(...). Saved me plenty of headache in the past - although of course if you just want to do "equals" on ID it may not fit your circumstances.

I also agree that you should use the @Override annotation whenever you're overriding equals (or any other method).

Eclipse IDE: How to zoom in on text?

Starting from tonight nightly build of 4.6/Neon, the Eclipse Platform includes a way to increase/decrease font size on text editors using Ctrl+ and Ctrl- (on Windows or Linux, Cmd= and Cmd- on Mac OS X) : https://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/news/4.6/M4/#text-zoom-commands . The implementation is shipped with any product using a recent build of the platform, and is more reliable that the one in the alternative plugins mentioned above. It will be more widely available within weeks, when the IDE packages for Neon M4 will be available, and it will be part of the public Neon release in June 2016.

Oracle SQL update based on subquery between two tables

As you've noticed, you have no selectivity to your update statement so it is updating your entire table. If you want to update specific rows (ie where the IDs match) you probably want to do a coordinated subquery.

However, since you are using Oracle, it might be easier to create a materialized view for your query table and let Oracle's transaction mechanism handle the details. MVs work exactly like a table for querying semantics, are quite easy to set up, and allow you to specify the refresh interval.

How to choose an AWS profile when using boto3 to connect to CloudFront

I think the docs aren't wonderful at exposing how to do this. It has been a supported feature for some time, however, and there are some details in this pull request.

So there are three different ways to do this:

Option A) Create a new session with the profile

    dev = boto3.session.Session(profile_name='dev')

Option B) Change the profile of the default session in code

    boto3.setup_default_session(profile_name='dev')

Option C) Change the profile of the default session with an environment variable

    $ AWS_PROFILE=dev ipython
    >>> import boto3
    >>> s3dev = boto3.resource('s3')

How to programmatically set style attribute in a view

For anyone looking for a Material answer see this SO post: Coloring Buttons in Android with Material Design and AppCompat

I used a combination of this answer to set the default text color of the button to white for my button: https://stackoverflow.com/a/32238489/3075340

Then this answer https://stackoverflow.com/a/34355919/3075340 to programmatically set the background color. The code for that is:

ViewCompat.setBackgroundTintList(your_colored_button,
 ContextCompat.getColorStateList(getContext(),R.color.your_custom_color));

your_colored_button can be just a regular Button or a AppCompat button if you wish - I tested the above code with both types of buttons and it works.

EDIT: I found that pre-lollipop devices do not work with the above code. See this post on how to add support for pre-lollipop devices: https://stackoverflow.com/a/30277424/3075340

Basically do this:

Button b = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button);
ColorStateList c = ContextCompat.getColorStateList(mContext, R.color.your_custom_color;
Drawable d = b.getBackground();
if (b instanceof AppCompatButton) {
    // appcompat button replaces tint of its drawable background
    ((AppCompatButton)b).setSupportBackgroundTintList(c);
} else if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.LOLLIPOP) {
    // Lollipop button replaces tint of its drawable background
    // however it is not equal to d.setTintList(c)
    b.setBackgroundTintList(c);
} else {
    // this should only happen if
    // * manually creating a Button instead of AppCompatButton
    // * LayoutInflater did not translate a Button to AppCompatButton
    d = DrawableCompat.wrap(d);
    DrawableCompat.setTintList(d, c);
    b.setBackgroundDrawable(d);
}

Change button text from Xcode?

If you've got a button that's hooked up to an action in your code, you can change the title without an instance variable.

For example, if the button is set to this action:

-(IBAction)startSomething:(id)sender;

You can simply do this in the method:

-(IBAction)startSomething:(id)sender {
    [sender setTitle:@"Hello" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
}

Or if you're wanting to toggle the name of the button, you can create a BOOL named "buttonToggled" (for example), and toggle the name this way:

-(IBAction)toggleButton:(id)sender {
    if (!buttonToggled) {
        [sender setTitle:@"Something" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
        buttonToggled = YES;
    }
    else {
        [sender setTitle:@"Different" forState:UIControlStateNormal];
        buttonToggled = NO;
    }
}

How remove border around image in css?

it's a good idea to use a reset CSS. add this at the top of your CSS file

Create a remote branch on GitHub

Before creating a new branch always the best practice is to have the latest of repo in your local machine. Follow these steps for error free branch creation.

 1. $ git branch (check which branches exist and which one is currently active (prefixed with *). This helps you avoid creating duplicate/confusing branch name)
 2. $ git branch <new_branch> (creates new branch)
 3. $ git checkout new_branch
 4. $ git add . (After making changes in the current branch)
 5. $ git commit -m "type commit msg here"
 6. $ git checkout master (switch to master branch so that merging with new_branch can be done)
 7. $ git merge new_branch (starts merging)
 8. $ git push origin master (push to the remote server)

I referred this blog and I found it to be a cleaner approach.

I get conflicting provisioning settings error when I try to archive to submit an iOS app

I had the same problem, I noticed that If you want to make a release of your iOs app and publish it on the App Store you don't need at all to put in the "Code Signing Identity" as release, just keep it as iOs developer.

Go to Your project -> Build Settings -> Code Signing Identity and put everything to iOs developer.

How to make phpstorm display line numbers by default?

Just now found where is it on Windows. Its View -> Active Editor -> Show Line Numbers (changes only for current document) and File -> Settings -> Editor -> Appearance -> Show Line Numbers (for all documents)

For Mac Version go to PhpStorm -> Preferences in menu. In the preference window go to IDE settings -> Editor -> Appearance -> Show Line Numbers (To change setting for all documents)

OR if you want to quickly set show line number PER CURRENT WINDOW even easier - right click on the long white column (where breakpoints are set) then select Show Line Numbers.

This is FAQ 7.10. Others have shown how to apply this to a single column in a data frame, or to multiple columns in a data frame. But this is really treating the symptom, not curing the cause.

A better approach is to use the colClasses argument to read.table and related functions to tell R that the column should be numeric so that it never creates a factor and creates numeric. This will put in NA for any values that do not convert to numeric.

Another better option is to figure out why R does not recognize the column as numeric (usually a non numeric character somewhere in that column) and fix the original data so that it is read in properly without needing to create NAs.

Best is a combination of the last 2, make sure the data is correct before reading it in and specify colClasses so R does not need to guess (this can speed up reading as well).

Run jar file with command line arguments

For the question

How can i run a jar file in command prompt but with arguments

.

To pass arguments to the jar file at the time of execution

java -jar myjar.jar arg1 arg2

In the main() method of "Main-Class" [mentioned in the manifest.mft file]of your JAR file. you can retrieve them like this:

String arg1 = args[0];
String arg2 = args[1];

Get index of array element faster than O(n)

Is there a good reason not to use a hash? Lookups are O(1) vs. O(n) for the array.

How do I get AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID for Amazon?

To find the AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY Its better to create new create "IAM" user Here is the steps https://docs.aws.amazon.com/IAM/latest/UserGuide/id_users_create.html 1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console and open the IAM console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/iam/.

  1. In the navigation pane, choose Users and then choose Add user.

Throw keyword in function's signature

Jalf already linked to it, but the GOTW puts it quite nicely why exception specifications are not as useful as one might hope:

int Gunc() throw(); // will throw nothing (?)
int Hunc() throw(A,B); // can only throw A or B (?)

Are the comments correct? Not quite. Gunc() may indeed throw something, and Hunc() may well throw something other than A or B! The compiler just guarantees to beat them senseless if they do… oh, and to beat your program senseless too, most of the time.

That's just what it comes down to, you probably just will end up with a call to terminate() and your program dying a quick but painful death.

The GOTWs conclusion is:

So here’s what seems to be the best advice we as a community have learned as of today:

  • Moral #1: Never write an exception specification.
  • Moral #2: Except possibly an empty one, but if I were you I’d avoid even that.

How to delete an SMS from the inbox in Android programmatically?

Using suggestions from others, I think I got it to work:

(using SDK v1 R2)

It's not perfect, since i need to delete the entire conversation, but for our purposes, it's a sufficient compromise as we will at least know all messages will be looked at and verified. Our flow will probably need to then listen for the message, capture for the message we want, do a query to get the thread_id of the recently inbounded message and do the delete() call.

In our Activity:

Uri uriSms = Uri.parse("content://sms/inbox");
Cursor c = getContentResolver().query(uriSms, null,null,null,null);
int id = c.getInt(0);
int thread_id = c.getInt(1); //get the thread_id
getContentResolver().delete(Uri.parse("content://sms/conversations/" + thread_id),null,null);

Note: I wasn't able to do a delete on content://sms/inbox/ or content://sms/all/

Looks like the thread takes precedence, which makes sense, but the error message only emboldened me to be angrier. When trying the delete on sms/inbox/ or sms/all/, you will probably get:

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Unknown URL
    at com.android.providers.telephony.SmsProvider.delete(SmsProvider.java:510)
    at android.content.ContentProvider$Transport.delete(ContentProvider.java:149)
    at android.content.ContentProviderNative.onTransact(ContentProviderNative.java:149)

For additional reference too, make sure to put this into your manifest for your intent receiver:

<receiver android:name=".intent.MySmsReceiver">
    <intent-filter>
        <action android:name="android.provider.Telephony.SMS_RECEIVED"></action>
    </intent-filter>
</receiver>

Note the receiver tag does not look like this:

<receiver android:name=".intent.MySmsReceiver"
    android:permission="android.permission.RECEIVE_SMS">

When I had those settings, android gave me some crazy permissions exceptions that didn't allow android.phone to hand off the received SMS to my intent. So, DO NOT put that RECEIVE_SMS permission attribute in your intent! Hopefully someone wiser than me can tell me why that was the case.

Split comma-separated values

.NET 2.0 does not use lambda expressions. You need to compile to .NET 3.0 to use them.

REST - HTTP Post Multipart with JSON

If I understand you correctly, you want to compose a multipart request manually from an HTTP/REST console. The multipart format is simple; a brief introduction can be found in the HTML 4.01 spec. You need to come up with a boundary, which is a string not found in the content, let’s say HereGoes. You set request header Content-Type: multipart/form-data; boundary=HereGoes. Then this should be a valid request body:

--HereGoes
Content-Disposition: form-data; name="myJsonString"
Content-Type: application/json

{"foo": "bar"}
--HereGoes
Content-Disposition: form-data; name="photo"
Content-Type: image/jpeg
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64

<...JPEG content in base64...>
--HereGoes--

Print commit message of a given commit in git

I started to use

git show-branch --no-name <hash>

It seems to be faster than

git show -s --format=%s <hash>

Both give the same result

I actually wrote a small tool to see the status of all my repos. You can find it on github.

Are list-comprehensions and functional functions faster than "for loops"?

I wrote a simple script that test the speed and this is what I found out. Actually for loop was fastest in my case. That really suprised me, check out bellow (was calculating sum of squares).

from functools import reduce
import datetime

def time_it(func, numbers, *args):
    start_t = datetime.datetime.now()
    for i in range(numbers):
        func(args[0])
    print (datetime.datetime.now()-start_t)

def square_sum1(numbers):
    return reduce(lambda sum, next: sum+next**2, numbers, 0)

def square_sum2(numbers):
    a = 0
    for i in numbers:
        i = i**2
        a += i
    return a

def square_sum3(numbers):
    sqrt = lambda x: x**2
    return sum(map(sqrt, numbers))

def square_sum4(numbers):
    return(sum([int(i)**2 for i in numbers]))

time_it(square_sum1, 100000, [1, 2, 5, 3, 1, 2, 5, 3])
time_it(square_sum2, 100000, [1, 2, 5, 3, 1, 2, 5, 3])

Convert bytes to int?

Lists of bytes are subscriptable (at least in Python 3.6). This way you can retrieve the decimal value of each byte individually.

>>> intlist = [64, 4, 26, 163, 255]
>>> bytelist = bytes(intlist)       # b'@x04\x1a\xa3\xff'

>>> for b in bytelist:
...    print(b)                     # 64  4  26  163  255

>>> [b for b in bytelist]           # [64, 4, 26, 163, 255]

>>> bytelist[2]                     # 26

Doctrine 2 ArrayCollection filter method

Doctrine now has Criteria which offers a single API for filtering collections with SQL and in PHP, depending on the context.

https://www.doctrine-project.org/projects/doctrine-orm/en/latest/reference/working-with-associations.html#filtering-collections

Update

This will achieve the result in the accepted answer, without getting everything from the database.

use Doctrine\Common\Collections\Criteria;

/**
 * @ORM\Entity
 */
class Member {
  // ...
  public function getCommentsFiltered($ids) {
    $criteria = Criteria::create()->where(Criteria::expr()->in("id", $ids));

    return $this->getComments()->matching($criteria);
  }

HTML meta tag for content language

You asked for differences, but you can’t quite compare those two.

Note that <meta http-equiv="content-language" content="es"> is obsolete and removed in HTML5. It was used to specify “a document-wide default language”, with its http-equiv attribute making it a pragma directive (which simulates an HTTP response header like Content-Language that hasn’t been sent from the server, since it cannot override a real one).

Regarding <meta name="language" content="Spanish">, you hardly find any reliable information. It’s non-standard and was probably invented as a SEO makeshift.

However, the HTML5 W3C Recommendation encourages authors to use the lang attribute on html root elements (attribute values must be valid BCP 47 language tags):

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="es-ES">
    <head>
        …

Anyway, if you want to specify the content language to instruct search engine robots, you should consider this quote from Google Search Console Help on multilingual sites:

Google uses only the visible content of your page to determine its language. We don’t use any code-level language information such as lang attributes.

Operation must use an updatable query. (Error 3073) Microsoft Access

I kept getting the same error, but all SQLs execute in Access very well.

and when I amended the permission of AccessFile.

the problem fixed!!

I give 'Network Service' account full control permission, this account if for IIS

PHP CURL Enable Linux

If anyone else stumbles onto this page from google like I did:

use putty (putty.exe) to sign into your server and install curl using this command :

    sudo apt-get install php5-curl

Make sure curl is enabled in the php.ini file. For me it's in /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini, if you can't find it, this line might be in /etc/php5/conf.d/curl.ini. Make sure the line :

    extension=curl.so

is not commented out then restart apache, so type this into putty:

    sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Info for install from https://askubuntu.com/questions/9293/how-do-i-install-curl-in-php5, to check if it works this stack overflow might help you: Detect if cURL works?

Getting parts of a URL (Regex)

You can get all the http/https, host, port, path as well as query by using Uri object in .NET. just the difficult task is to break the host into sub domain, domain name and TLD.

There is no standard to do so and can't be simply use string parsing or RegEx to produce the correct result. At first, I am using RegEx function but not all URL can be parse the subdomain correctly. The practice way is to use a list of TLDs. After a TLD for a URL is defined the left part is domain and the remaining is sub domain.

However the list need to maintain it since new TLDs is possible. The current moment I know is publicsuffix.org maintain the latest list and you can use domainname-parser tools from google code to parse the public suffix list and get the sub domain, domain and TLD easily by using DomainName object: domainName.SubDomain, domainName.Domain and domainName.TLD.

This answers also helpfull: Get the subdomain from a URL

How can you debug a CORS request with cURL?

Here's how you can debug CORS requests using curl.

Sending a regular CORS request using cUrl:

curl -H "Origin: http://example.com" --verbose \
  https://www.googleapis.com/discovery/v1/apis?fields=

The -H "Origin: http://example.com" flag is the third party domain making the request. Substitute in whatever your domain is.

The --verbose flag prints out the entire response so you can see the request and response headers.

The url I'm using above is a sample request to a Google API that supports CORS, but you can substitute in whatever url you are testing.

The response should include the Access-Control-Allow-Origin header.

Sending a preflight request using cUrl:

curl -H "Origin: http://example.com" \
  -H "Access-Control-Request-Method: POST" \
  -H "Access-Control-Request-Headers: X-Requested-With" \
  -X OPTIONS --verbose \
  https://www.googleapis.com/discovery/v1/apis?fields=

This looks similar to the regular CORS request with a few additions:

The -H flags send additional preflight request headers to the server

The -X OPTIONS flag indicates that this is an HTTP OPTIONS request.

If the preflight request is successful, the response should include the Access-Control-Allow-Origin, Access-Control-Allow-Methods, and Access-Control-Allow-Headers response headers. If the preflight request was not successful, these headers shouldn't appear, or the HTTP response won't be 200.

You can also specify additional headers, such as User-Agent, by using the -H flag.

time data does not match format

While the above answer is 100% helpful and correct, I'd like to add the following since only a combination of the above answer and reading through the pandas doc helped me:

2-digit / 4-digit year

It is noteworthy, that in order to parse through a 2-digit year, e.g. '90' rather than '1990', a %y is required instead of a %Y.

Infer the datetime automatically

If parsing with a pre-defined format still doesn't work for you, try using the flag infer_datetime_format=True, for example:

yields_df['Date'] = pd.to_datetime(yields_df['Date'], infer_datetime_format=True)

Be advised that this solution is slower than using a pre-defined format.

Delete a single record from Entity Framework?

It's not necessary to query the object first, you can attach it to the context by its id. Like this:

var employer = new Employ { Id = 1 };
ctx.Employ.Attach(employer);
ctx.Employ.Remove(employer);
ctx.SaveChanges();

Alternatively, you can set the attached entry's state to deleted :

var employer = new Employ { Id = 1 };
ctx.Entry(employer).State = EntityState.Deleted;
ctx.SaveChanges();

How to escape single quotes within single quoted strings

I don't see the entry on his blog (link pls?) but according to the gnu reference manual:

Enclosing characters in single quotes (‘'’) preserves the literal value of each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash.

so bash won't understand:

alias x='y \'z '

however, you can do this if you surround with double quotes:

alias x="echo \'y "
> x
> 'y

Understanding the map function

Python3 - map(func, iterable)

One thing that wasn't mentioned completely (although @BlooB kinda mentioned it) is that map returns a map object NOT a list. This is a big difference when it comes to time performance on initialization and iteration. Consider these two tests.

import time
def test1(iterable):
    a = time.clock()
    map(str, iterable)
    a = time.clock() - a

    b = time.clock()
    [ str(x) for x in iterable ]
    b = time.clock() - b

    print(a,b)

def test2(iterable):
    a = time.clock()
    [ x for x in map(str, iterable)]
    a = time.clock() - a

    b = time.clock()
    [ str(x) for x in iterable ]
    b = time.clock() - b

    print(a,b)

test1(range(2000000))  # Prints ~1.7e-5s   ~8s
test2(range(2000000))  # Prints ~9s        ~8s

As you can see initializing the map function takes almost no time at all. However iterating through the map object takes longer than simply iterating through the iterable. This means that the function passed to map() is not applied to each element until the element is reached in the iteration. If you want a list use list comprehension. If you plan to iterate through in a for loop and will break at some point, then use map.

Git workflow and rebase vs merge questions

From what I have observed, git merge tends to keep the branches separate even after merging, whereas rebase then merge combines it into one single branch. The latter comes out much cleaner, whereas in the former, it would be easier to find out which commits belong to which branch even after merging.

If you need to do this as part of a script then the best way is to use Java. Assuming the bin directory is in your path (in most cases), you can use the command line:

If Java is not on your path, reference it directly:

C:\Java\jdk1.6.0_03\bin>jar xf test.zip

What is a stored procedure?

Think of a situation like this,

  • You have a database with data.
  • There are a number of different applications needed to access that central database, and in the future some new applications too.
  • If you are going to insert the inline database queries to access the central database, inside each application's code individually, then probably you have to duplicate the same query again and again inside different applications' code.
  • In that kind of a situation, you can use stored procedures (SPs). With stored procedures, you are writing number of common queries (procedures) and store them with the central database.
  • Now the duplication of work will never happen as before and the data access and the maintenance will be done centrally.

NOTE:

  • In the above situation, you may wonder "Why cannot we introduce a central data access server to interact with all the applications? Yes. That will be a possible alternative. But,
  • The main advantage with SPs over that approach is, unlike your data-access-code with inline queries, SPs are pre-compiled statements, so they will execute faster. And communication costs (over networks) will be at a minimum.
  • Opposite to that, SPs will add some more load to the database server. If that would be a concern according to the situation, a centralized data access server with inline queries will be a better choice.

Get to UIViewController from UIView?

I think there is a case when the observed needs to inform the observer.

I see a similar problem where the UIView in a UIViewController is responding to a situation and it needs to first tell its parent view controller to hide the back button and then upon completion tell the parent view controller that it needs to pop itself off the stack.

I have been trying this with delegates with no success.

I don't understand why this should be a bad idea?

Convert array to JSON string in swift

Swift 5

Make sure your object confirm Codable.

Swift's default variable types like Int, String, Double and ..., all are Codable that means we can convert theme to Data and vice versa.

For example, let's convert array of Int to String Base64

let array = [1, 2, 3]
let data = try? JSONEncoder().encode(array)
nsManagedObject.array = data?.base64EncodedString()

Make sure your NSManaged variable type is String in core data schema editor and custom class if your using custom class for core data objects.

let's convert back base64 string to array:

var getArray: [Int] {
    guard let array = array else { return [] }
    guard let data = Data(base64Encoded: array) else { return [] }
    guard let val = try? JSONDecoder().decode([Int].self, from: data) else { return [] }
    return val
}

Do not convert your own object to Base64 and store as String in CoreData and vice versa because we have something that named Relation in CoreData (databases).

Failed to load resource: net::ERR_CONTENT_LENGTH_MISMATCH

In my case I was miscalculating the Content-Length that I advertised in the header. I was serving Range-Requests for files and I mistakenly published the filesize in Content-Length.

I fixed the problem by setting Content-Length to the actual range that I was sending back to the browser.

So in case I am answering to a normal request I set the Content-Length to the filesize. In case I am answering to a range-request I set the Content-Length to the actualy length of the requested range.

I had a similar use case where I wanted to test a Spring Boot configured repository in isolation (in my case without Spring Security autoconfiguration which was failing my test). @SpringApplicationConfiguration uses SpringApplicationContextLoader and that has a JavaDoc stating

Can be used to test non-web features (like a repository layer) or start an fully-configured embedded servlet container.

However, like yourself, I could not work out how you are meant to configure the test to only test the repository layer using the main configuration entry point i.e. using your approach of @SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = Application.class).

My solution was to create a completely new application context exclusive for testing. So in src/test/java I have two files in a sub-package called repo

  1. RepoIntegrationTest.java
  2. TestRepoConfig.java

where RepoIntegrationTest.java has

@RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)
@SpringApplicationConfiguration(classes = TestRepoConfig.class)
public class RepoIntegrationTest {

and TestRepoConfig.java has

@SpringBootApplication(exclude = SecurityAutoConfiguration.class)
public class TestRepoConfig {

It got me out of trouble but it would be really useful if anyone from the Spring Boot team could provide an alternative recommended solution

Finding Variable Type in JavaScript

To be a little more ECMAScript-5.1-precise than the other answers (some might say pedantic):

In JavaScript, variables (and properties) don't have types: values do. Further, there are only 6 types of values: Undefined, Null, Boolean, String, Number, and Object. (Technically, there are also 7 "specification types", but you can't store values of those types as properties of objects or values of variables--they are only used within the spec itself, to define how the language works. The values you can explicitly manipulate are of only the 6 types I listed.)

The spec uses the notation "Type(x)" when it wants to talk about "the type of x". This is only a notation used within the spec: it is not a feature of the language.

As other answers make clear, in practice you may well want to know more than the type of a value--particularly when the type is Object. Regardless, and for completeness, here is a simple JavaScript implementation of Type(x) as it is used in the spec:

function Type(x) {
    if (x === null) {
        return 'Null';
    }

    switch (typeof x) {
    case 'undefined': return 'Undefined';
    case 'boolean'  : return 'Boolean';
    case 'number'   : return 'Number';
    case 'string'   : return 'String';
    default         : return 'Object';
    }
}

Should each and every table have a primary key?

To make it future proof you really should. If you want to replicate it you'll need one. If you want to join it to another table your life (and that of the poor fools who have to maintain it next year) will be so much easier.

Restoring database from .mdf and .ldf files of SQL Server 2008

From a script (one that works):

CREATE DATABASE Northwind
ON ( FILENAME = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\Northwind.mdf' )
LOG ON ( FILENAME = 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA\Northwind_log.ldf')
GO

obviously update the path:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\DATA

To where your .mdf and .ldf reside.

What is the difference between HTTP status code 200 (cache) vs status code 304?

This threw me for a long time too. The first thing I'd verify is that you're not reloading the page by clicking the refresh button, that will always issue a conditional request for resources and will return 304s for many of the page elements. Instead go up to the url bar select the page and hit enter as if you had just typed in the same URL again, that will give you a better indicator of what's being cached properly. This article does a great job explaining the difference between conditional and unconditional requests and how the refresh button affects them: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/ieinternals/archive/2010/07/08/technical-information-about-conditional-http-requests-and-the-refresh-button.aspx

Is it possible to decrypt SHA1

Since SHA-1 maps several byte sequences to one, you can't "decrypt" a hash, but in theory you can find collisions: strings that have the same hash.

It seems that breaking a single hash would cost about 2.7 million dollars worth of computer time currently, so your efforts are probably better spent somewhere else.

Get Value of Row in Datatable c#

Dont use a foreach then. Use a 'for loop'. Your code is a bit messed up but you could do something like...

for (Int32 i = 0; i < dt_pattern.Rows.Count; i++)
{
    double yATmax = ToDouble(dt_pattern.Rows[i+1]["Ampl"].ToString()) + AT;
}

Note you would have to take into account during the last row there will be no 'i+1' so you will have to use an if statement to catch that.

JavaScript - XMLHttpRequest, Access-Control-Allow-Origin errors

I've gotten same problem. The servers logs showed:

DEBUG: <-- origin: null

I've investigated that and it occurred that this is not populated when I've been calling from file from local drive. When I've copied file to the server and used it from server - the request worked perfectly fine

Vertical align middle with Bootstrap responsive grid

.row {
    letter-spacing: -.31em;
    word-spacing: -.43em;
}
.col-md-4 {
    float: none;
    display: inline-block;
    vertical-align: middle;
}

Note: .col-md-4 could be any grid column, its just an example here.

In Bash, how can I check if a string begins with some value?

I prefer the other methods already posted, but some people like to use:

case "$HOST" in
    user1|node*)
            echo "yes";;
        *)
            echo "no";;
esac

Edit:

I've added your alternates to the case statement above

In your edited version you have too many brackets. It should look like this:

if [[ $HOST == user1 || $HOST == node* ]];

Can I style an image's ALT text with CSS?

You can use img[alt] {styles} to style only the alternative text.

Waiting for HOME ('android.process.acore') to be launched

I solved this issue by creating a new virtual device and launching it from the AVD manager. The device takes a few minutes to start, you just have to wait. Then you can run your application on the already started device.

Get the IP address of the machine

I like jjvainio's answer. As Zan Lnyx says, it uses the local routing table to find the IP address of the ethernet interface that would be used for a connection to a specific external host. By using a connected UDP socket, you can get the information without actually sending any packets. The approach requires that you choose a specific external host. Most of the time, any well-known public IP should do the trick. I like Google's public DNS server address 8.8.8.8 for this purpose, but there may be times you'd want to choose a different external host IP. Here is some code that illustrates the full approach.

void GetPrimaryIp(char* buffer, size_t buflen)
{
    assert(buflen >= 16);

    int sock = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_DGRAM, 0);
    assert(sock != -1);

    const char* kGoogleDnsIp = "8.8.8.8";
    uint16_t kDnsPort = 53;
    struct sockaddr_in serv;
    memset(&serv, 0, sizeof(serv));
    serv.sin_family = AF_INET;
    serv.sin_addr.s_addr = inet_addr(kGoogleDnsIp);
    serv.sin_port = htons(kDnsPort);

    int err = connect(sock, (const sockaddr*) &serv, sizeof(serv));
    assert(err != -1);

    sockaddr_in name;
    socklen_t namelen = sizeof(name);
    err = getsockname(sock, (sockaddr*) &name, &namelen);
    assert(err != -1);

    const char* p = inet_ntop(AF_INET, &name.sin_addr, buffer, buflen);
    assert(p);

    close(sock);
}

How to use log4net in Asp.net core 2.0

Following on Irfan's answer, I have the following XML configuration on OSX with .NET Core 2.1.300 which correctly logs and appends to a ./log folder and also to the console. Note the log4net.config must exist in the solution root (whereas in my case, my app root is a subfolder).

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
<log4net>
  <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender" >
      <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
      <conversionPattern value="%date %-5level %logger - %message%newline" />
      </layout>
  </appender>
  <appender name="RollingLogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender">
    <lockingModel type="log4net.Appender.FileAppender+MinimalLock"/>
    <file value="logs/" />
    <datePattern value="yyyy-MM-dd.'txt'"/>
    <staticLogFileName value="false"/>
    <appendToFile value="true"/>
    <rollingStyle value="Date"/>
    <maxSizeRollBackups value="100"/>
    <maximumFileSize value="15MB"/>
    <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout">
      <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %-5level App  %newline %message %newline %newline"/>
    </layout>
  </appender>
    <root>
      <level value="ALL"/>
      <appender-ref ref="RollingLogFileAppender"/>
      <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"/>
    </root>
</log4net>

Another note, the traditional way of setting the XML up within app.config did not work:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<configuration>
    <configSections>
    <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" />
  </configSections>
  <log4net> ...

For some reason, the log4net node was not found when accessing the XMLDocument via log4netConfig["log4net"].

Adjust list style image position?

Another option you can do, is the following:

li:before{
    content:'';
    padding: 0 0 0 25px;
    background:url(../includes/images/layouts/featured-list-arrow.png) no-repeat 0 3px;
}

Use (0 3px) to position the list image.

Works in IE8+, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera.

I use this option because you can swap out list-style easily and a good chance you may not even have to use an image at all. (fiddle below)

http://jsfiddle.net/flashminddesign/cYAzV/1/

UPDATE:

This will account for text / content going into the second line:

ul{
    list-style-type:none;
}

li{
    position:relative;
}

ul li:before{
    content:'>';
    padding:0 10px 0 0;
    position:absolute;
    top:0; left:-10px;
}

Add padding-left: to the li if you want more space between the bullet and content.

How to write to a CSV line by line?

To complement the previous answers, I whipped up a quick class to write to CSV files. It makes it easier to manage and close open files and achieve consistency and cleaner code if you have to deal with multiple files.

class CSVWriter():

    filename = None
    fp = None
    writer = None

    def __init__(self, filename):
        self.filename = filename
        self.fp = open(self.filename, 'w', encoding='utf8')
        self.writer = csv.writer(self.fp, delimiter=';', quotechar='"', quoting=csv.QUOTE_ALL, lineterminator='\n')

    def close(self):
        self.fp.close()

    def write(self, elems):
        self.writer.writerow(elems)

    def size(self):
        return os.path.getsize(self.filename)

    def fname(self):
        return self.filename

Example usage:

mycsv = CSVWriter('/tmp/test.csv')
mycsv.write((12,'green','apples'))
mycsv.write((7,'yellow','bananas'))
mycsv.close()
print("Written %d bytes to %s" % (mycsv.size(), mycsv.fname()))

Have fun

Why is the default value of the string type null instead of an empty string?

A String is an immutable object which means when given a value, the old value doesn't get wiped out of memory, but remains in the old location, and the new value is put in a new location. So if the default value of String a was String.Empty, it would waste the String.Empty block in memory when it was given its first value.

Although it seems minuscule, it could turn into a problem when initializing a large array of strings with default values of String.Empty. Of course, you could always use the mutable StringBuilder class if this was going to be a problem.

how to set ulimit / file descriptor on docker container the image tag is phusion/baseimage-docker

The latest docker supports setting ulimits through the command line and the API. For instance, docker run takes --ulimit <type>=<soft>:<hard> and there can be as many of these as you like. So, for your nofile, an example would be --ulimit nofile=262144:262144

How to clear/delete the contents of a Tkinter Text widget?

for me "1.0" didn't work, but '0' worked. This is Python 2.7.12, just FYI. Also depends on how you import the module. Here's how:

import Tkinter as tk
window = tk.Tk()
textBox = tk.Entry(window)
textBox.pack()

And the following code is called when you need to clear it. In my case there was a button Save that saves the data from the Entry text box and after the button is clicked, the text box is cleared

textBox.delete('0',tk.END)

How to debug Javascript with IE 8

I discovered today that we can now debug Javascript With the developer tool bar plugins integreted in IE 8.

  • Click ? Tools on the toolbar, to the right of the tabs.
  • Select Developer Tools. The Developer Tools dialogue should open.
  • Click the Script tab in the dialogue.
  • Click the Start Debugging button.

You can use watch, breakpoint, see the call stack etc, similarly to debuggers in professional browsers.

You can also use the statement debugger; in your JavaScript code the set a breakpoint.

Test credit card numbers for use with PayPal sandbox

A bit late in the game but just in case it helps anyone.

If you are testing using the Sandbox and on the payment page you want to test payments NOT using a PayPal account but using the "Pay with Debit or Credit Card option" (i.e. when a regular Joe/Jane, NOT PayPal users, want to buy your stuff) and want to save yourself some time: just go to a site like http://www.getcreditcardnumbers.com/ and get numbers from there. You can use any Expiry date (in the future) and any numeric CCV (123 works).

The "test credit card numbers" in the PayPal documentation are just another brick in their infuriating wall of convoluted stuff.

I got the url above from PayPal's tech support.

Tested using a simple Hosted button and IPN. Good luck.

jQuery has deprecated synchronous XMLHTTPRequest

This happened to me by having a link to external js outside the head just before the end of the body section. You know, one of these:

<script src="http://somesite.net/js/somefile.js">

It did not have anything to do with JQuery.

You would probably see the same doing something like this:

var script = $("<script></script>");
script.attr("src", basepath + "someotherfile.js");
$(document.body).append(script);

But I haven't tested that idea.

IntelliJ IDEA JDK configuration on Mac OS

Just tried this recently and when trying to select the JDK... /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/ appears as empty when opening&selecting through IntelliJ. Therefore i couldn't select the JDK...

I've found that to workaround this, when the finder windows open (pressing [+] JDK) just use the shortcut Shift + CMD + G to specify the path. (/System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/1.6.0.jdk in my case)

And voila, IntelliJ can find everything from that point on.

Which MySQL datatype to use for an IP address?

You have two possibilities (for an IPv4 address) :

  • a varchar(15), if your want to store the IP address as a string
    • 192.128.0.15 for instance
  • an integer (4 bytes), if you convert the IP address to an integer
    • 3229614095 for the IP I used before

The second solution will require less space in the database, and is probably a better choice, even if it implies a bit of manipulations when storing and retrieving the data (converting it from/to a string).

About those manipulations, see the ip2long() and long2ip() functions, on the PHP-side, or inet_aton() and inet_ntoa() on the MySQL-side.

ASP.NET jQuery Ajax Calling Code-Behind Method

This hasn't solved my problem too, so I changed the parameters slightly.
This code worked for me:

var dataValue = "{ name: 'person', isGoing: 'true', returnAddress: 'returnEmail' }";

$.ajax({
    type: "POST",
    url: "Default.aspx/OnSubmit",
    data: dataValue,
    contentType: 'application/json; charset=utf-8',
    dataType: 'json',
    error: function (XMLHttpRequest, textStatus, errorThrown) {
        alert("Request: " + XMLHttpRequest.toString() + "\n\nStatus: " + textStatus + "\n\nError: " + errorThrown);
    },

        alert("We returned: " + result.d);
    }
});

Android Material: Status bar color won't change

Status bar coloring is not supported in AppCompat v7:21.0.0.

From the Android developers blog post

On older platforms, AppCompat emulates the color theming where possible. At the moment this is limited to coloring the action bar and some widgets.

This means the AppCompat lib will only color status bars on Lollipop and above.

"inappropriate ioctl for device"

"inappropriate ioctl for device" is the error string for the ENOTTY error. It used to be triggerred primarily by attempts to configure terminal properties (e.g. echo mode) on a file descriptor that was no terminal (but, say, a regular file), hence ENOTTY. More generally, it is triggered when doing an ioctl on a device that does not support that ioctl, hence the error string.

To find out what ioctl is being made that fails, and on what file descriptor, run the script under strace/truss. You'll recognize ENOTTY, followed by the actual printing of the error message. Then find out what file number was used, and what open() call returned that file number.

How is the java memory pool divided?

The Heap is divided into young and old generations as follows :

Young Generation: It is a place where an object lived for a short period and it is divided into two spaces:

  • Eden Space: When object created using new keyword memory allocated on this space.
  • Survivor Space (S0 and S1): This is the pool which contains objects which have survived after minor java garbage collection from Eden space.

Old Generation: This pool basically contains tenured and virtual (reserved) space and will be holding those objects which survived after garbage collection from the Young Generation.

  • Tenured Space: This memory pool contains objects which survived after multiple garbage collection means an object which survived after garbage collection from Survivor space.

enter image description here

Explanation

Let's imagine our application has just started.

So at this point all three of these spaces are empty (Eden, S0, S1).

Whenever a new object is created it is placed in the Eden space.

When the Eden space gets full then the garbage collection process (minor GC) will take place on the Eden space and any surviving objects are moved into S0.

Our application then continues running add new objects are created in the Eden space the next time that the garbage collection process runs it looks at everything in the Eden space and in S0 and any objects that survive get moved into S1.

PS: Based on the configuration that how much time object should survive in Survivor space, the object may also move back and forth to S0 and S1 and then reaching the threshold objects will be moved to old generation heap space.

How to set the style -webkit-transform dynamically using JavaScript?

How to hide navigation bar permanently in android activity?

For people looking at a simpler solution, I think you can just have this one line of code in onStart()

What would be handy would be to apply the Camera position to a new plot. So I plot, then move the plot around with the mouse changing the distance. Then try to replicate the view including the distance on another plot. I find that axx.ax.get_axes() gets me an object with the old .azim and .elev.

IN PYTHON...

axx=ax1.get_axes()
azm=axx.azim
ele=axx.elev
dst=axx.dist       # ALWAYS GIVES 10
#dst=ax1.axes.dist # ALWAYS GIVES 10
#dst=ax1.dist      # ALWAYS GIVES 10

Later 3d graph...

ax2.view_init(elev=ele, azim=azm) #Works!
ax2.dist=dst # works but always 10 from axx

EDIT 1... OK, Camera position is the wrong way of thinking concerning the .dist value. It rides on top of everything as a kind of hackey scalar multiplier for the whole graph.

This works for the magnification/zoom of the view:

xlm=ax1.get_xlim3d() #These are two tupples
ylm=ax1.get_ylim3d() #we use them in the next
zlm=ax1.get_zlim3d() #graph to reproduce the magnification from mousing
axx=ax1.get_axes()
azm=axx.azim
ele=axx.elev

Later Graph...

ax2.view_init(elev=ele, azim=azm) #Reproduce view
ax2.set_xlim3d(xlm[0],xlm[1])     #Reproduce magnification
ax2.set_ylim3d(ylm[0],ylm[1])     #...
ax2.set_zlim3d(zlm[0],zlm[1])     #...

Why is AJAX returning HTTP status code 0?

In my troubleshooting, I found this AJAX xmlhttpRequest.status == 0 could mean the client call had NOT reached the server yet, but failed due to issue on the client side. If the response was from server, then the status must be either those 1xx/2xx/3xx/4xx/5xx HTTP Response code. Henceforth, the troubleshooting shall focus on the CLIENT issue, and could be internet network connection down or one of those described by @Langdon above.

Moving average or running mean

Python standard library solution

This generator-function takes an iterable and a window size N and yields the average over the current values inside the window. It uses a deque, which is a datastructure similar to a list, but optimized for fast modifications (pop, append) at both endpoints.

from collections import deque
from itertools import islice

def sliding_avg(iterable, N):
    it = iter(iterable)
    window = deque(islice(it, N))
    num_vals = len(window)

    if num_vals < N:
        msg = 'window size {} exceeds total number of values {}'
        raise ValueError(msg.format(N, num_vals))

    N = float(N) # force floating point division if using Python 2
    s = sum(window)

    while True:
        yield s/N
        try:
            nxt = next(it)
        except StopIteration:
            break
        s = s - window.popleft() + nxt
        window.append(nxt)

Here is the function in action:

>>> values = range(100)
>>> N = 5
>>> window_avg = sliding_avg(values, N)
>>>
>>> next(window_avg) # (0 + 1 + 2 + 3 + 4)/5
>>> 2.0
>>> next(window_avg) # (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5)/5
>>> 3.0
>>> next(window_avg) # (2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6)/5
>>> 4.0

What's the difference between "&nbsp;" and " "?

As already mentioned, you will not receive a line break where there is a "no-break space".

Also be wary, that elements containing only a " " may show up incorrectly, where &nbsp; will work. In i.e. 6 at least (as far as I remember, IE7 has the same issue), if you have an empty table element, it will not apply styling, for example borders, to the element, if there is no content, or only white space. So the following will not be rendered with borders:

<td></td>
<td> <td>

Whereas the borders will show up in this example:

<td>& nbsp;</td>

Hmm -had to put in a dummy space to get it to render correctly here

How can I select from list of values in SQL Server

If you need an array, separate the array columns with a comma:

SELECT * FROM (VALUES('WOMENS'),('MENS'),('CHILDRENS')) as X([Attribute])
,(VALUES(742),(318)) AS z([StoreID])

Should you use .htm or .html file extension? What is the difference, and which file is correct?

Here is some food for thought.

If you had been using all .htm files on your website and now, for example, you have changed the editor that you are using, and your new editor is outputting all your files with the .html extension. When you re-publish your site to the server, it would seem to me that you could really hurt your SEO position/ranking as many of the links out there in the web, including Google, that were looking for the .htm and not the new .html for that same page. This assumes that you are still using the same page names from your old editor which would make sense.

Anyway... My point is, be careful not to loose that link juice you have build up. So I guess in this example, there is a reason to stick with .htm... But other then that as mentioned by everyone else they seem to be the same.

Please correct if I'm wrong.

The reason I mention all this is because this is what I was in the process of doing when it occurred to me I may be damaging the site SEO with the new editor.

The original editor was MS Front Page, which always outputted .htm, dead now, and the new editor "90 Second Web Builder 9" which outputs all .html files... Luckily, they must have thought about this and they included a way to change the output extension back to .htm

Anyway, that's my 2 cents... hope it helps someone..

jQuery override default validation error message display (Css) Popup/Tooltip like

That answer really helped me, in my case i had to filter some elements out and have special aligment on their error div,

errorPlacement:function(error,element) {
    if (element.attr("id") == "special_element") {
        // special align
    } else { // default error scheme
        error.insertAfter(element);
    }
}

Use sudo with password as parameter

One option is to use the -A flag to sudo. This runs a program to ask for the password. Rather than ask, you could have a script that just spits out the password so the program can continue.

Pandas: create two new columns in a dataframe with values calculated from a pre-existing column

I'd just use zip:

In [1]: from pandas import *

In [2]: def calculate(x):
   ...:     return x*2, x*3
   ...:

In [3]: df = DataFrame({'a': [1,2,3], 'b': [2,3,4]})

In [4]: df
Out[4]:
   a  b
0  1  2
1  2  3
2  3  4

In [5]: df["A1"], df["A2"] = zip(*df["a"].map(calculate))

In [6]: df
Out[6]:
   a  b  A1  A2
0  1  2   2   3
1  2  3   4   6
2  3  4   6   9

Calling a Function defined inside another function in Javascript

You could make it into a module and expose your inner function by returning it in an Object.

function outer() {
    function inner() {
        console.log("hi");
    }
    return {
        inner: inner
    };
}
var foo = outer();
foo.inner();

HTML form action and onsubmit issues

You should stop the submit procedure by returning false on the onsubmit callback.

<script>
    function checkRegistration(){
        if(!form_valid){
            alert('Given data is not correct');
            return false;
        }
        return true;
    }
</script>

<form onsubmit="return checkRegistration()"...

Here you have a fully working example. The form will submit only when you write google into input, otherwise it will return an error:

<script>
    function checkRegistration(){
        var form_valid = (document.getElementById('some_input').value == 'google');
        if(!form_valid){
            alert('Given data is incorrect');
            return false;
        }
        return true;
    }
</script>

<form onsubmit="return checkRegistration()" method="get" action="http://google.com">
    Write google to go to google...<br/>
    <input type="text" id="some_input" value=""/>
    <input type="submit" value="google it"/>
</form>

How to test if a file is a directory in a batch script?

If your objective is to only process directories then this will be useful.

This is taken from the https://ss64.com/nt/for_d.html

Example... List every subfolder, below the folder C:\Work\ that has a name starting with "User":

CD \Work
FOR /D /r %%G in ("User*") DO Echo We found

FOR /D or FOR /D /R

@echo off
cd /d "C:\your directory here"
for /d /r %%A in ("*") do echo We found a folder: %%~nxA
pause

Remove /r to only go one folder deep. The /r switch is recursive and undocumented in the command below.

The for /d help taken from command for /?

FOR /D %variable IN (set) DO command [command-parameters]

If set contains wildcards, then specifies to match against directory names instead of file names.

The given key was not present in the dictionary. Which key?

This exception is thrown when you try to index to something that isn't there, for example:

Dictionary<String, String> test = new Dictionary<String,String>();
test.Add("Key1","Value1");
string error = test["Key2"];

Often times, something like an object will be the key, which undoubtedly makes it harder to get. However, you can always write the following (or even wrap it up in an extension method):

if (test.ContainsKey(myKey))
   return test[myKey];
else
   throw new Exception(String.Format("Key {0} was not found", myKey));

Or more efficient (thanks to @ScottChamberlain)

T retValue;
if (test.TryGetValue(myKey, out retValue))
    return retValue;
else
   throw new Exception(String.Format("Key {0} was not found", myKey));

Microsoft chose not to do this, probably because it would be useless when used on most objects. Its simple enough to do yourself, so just roll your own!

How to set specific window (frame) size in java swing?

Most layout managers work best with a component's preferredSize, and most GUI's are best off allowing the components they contain to set their own preferredSizes based on their content or properties. To use these layout managers to their best advantage, do call pack() on your top level containers such as your JFrames before making them visible as this will tell these managers to do their actions -- to layout their components.

Often when I've needed to play a more direct role in setting the size of one of my components, I'll override getPreferredSize and have it return a Dimension that is larger than the super.preferredSize (or if not then it returns the super's value).

For example, here's a small drag-a-rectangle app that I created for another question on this site:

import java.awt.*;
import java.awt.event.*;
import javax.swing.*;

public class MoveRect extends JPanel {
   private static final int RECT_W = 90;
   private static final int RECT_H = 70;
   private static final int PREF_W = 600;
   private static final int PREF_H = 300;
   private static final Color DRAW_RECT_COLOR = Color.black;
   private static final Color DRAG_RECT_COLOR = new Color(180, 200, 255);
   private Rectangle rect = new Rectangle(25, 25, RECT_W, RECT_H);
   private boolean dragging = false;
   private int deltaX = 0;
   private int deltaY = 0;

   public MoveRect() {
      MyMouseAdapter myMouseAdapter = new MyMouseAdapter();
      addMouseListener(myMouseAdapter);
      addMouseMotionListener(myMouseAdapter);
   }

   @Override
   protected void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
      super.paintComponent(g);
      if (rect != null) {
         Color c = dragging ? DRAG_RECT_COLOR : DRAW_RECT_COLOR;
         g.setColor(c);
         Graphics2D g2 = (Graphics2D) g;
         g2.draw(rect);
      }
   }

   @Override
   public Dimension getPreferredSize() {
      return new Dimension(PREF_W, PREF_H);
   }

   private class MyMouseAdapter extends MouseAdapter {

      @Override
      public void mousePressed(MouseEvent e) {
         Point mousePoint = e.getPoint();
         if (rect.contains(mousePoint)) {
            dragging = true;
            deltaX = rect.x - mousePoint.x;
            deltaY = rect.y - mousePoint.y;
         }
      }

      @Override
      public void mouseReleased(MouseEvent e) {
         dragging = false;
         repaint();
      }

      @Override
      public void mouseDragged(MouseEvent e) {
         Point p2 = e.getPoint();
         if (dragging) {
            int x = p2.x + deltaX;
            int y = p2.y + deltaY;
            rect = new Rectangle(x, y, RECT_W, RECT_H);
            MoveRect.this.repaint();
         }
      }
   }

   private static void createAndShowGui() {
      MoveRect mainPanel = new MoveRect();

      JFrame frame = new JFrame("MoveRect");
      frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
      frame.getContentPane().add(mainPanel);
      frame.pack();
      frame.setLocationByPlatform(true);
      frame.setVisible(true);
   }

   public static void main(String[] args) {
      SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
         public void run() {
            createAndShowGui();
         }
      });
   }
}

Note that my main class is a JPanel, and that I override JPanel's getPreferredSize:

public class MoveRect extends JPanel {
   //.... deleted constants

   private static final int PREF_W = 600;
   private static final int PREF_H = 300;

   //.... deleted fields and constants

   //... deleted methods and constructors

   @Override
   public Dimension getPreferredSize() {
      return new Dimension(PREF_W, PREF_H);
   }

Also note that when I display my GUI, I place it into a JFrame, call pack(); on the JFrame, set its position, and then call setVisible(true); on my JFrame:

   private static void createAndShowGui() {
      MoveRect mainPanel = new MoveRect();

      JFrame frame = new JFrame("MoveRect");
      frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
      frame.getContentPane().add(mainPanel);
      frame.pack();
      frame.setLocationByPlatform(true);
      frame.setVisible(true);
   }

   public static void main(String[] args) {
      SwingUtilities.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
         public void run() {
            createAndShowGui();
         }
      });
   }
}

Javascript: Setting location.href versus location

Even if both work, I would use the latter. location is an object, and assigning a string to an object doesn't bode well for readability or maintenance.

How to get Url Hash (#) from server side

We had a situation where we needed to persist the URL hash across ASP.Net post backs. As the browser does not send the hash to the server by default, the only way to do it is to use some Javascript:

  1. When the form submits, grab the hash (window.location.hash) and store it in a server-side hidden input field Put this in a DIV with an id of "urlhash" so we can find it easily later.

  2. On the server you can use this value if you need to do something with it. You can even change it if you need to.

  3. On page load on the client, check the value of this this hidden field. You will want to find it by the DIV it is contained in as the auto-generated ID won't be known. Yes, you could do some trickery here with .ClientID but we found it simpler to just use the wrapper DIV as it allows all this Javascript to live in an external file and be used in a generic fashion.

  4. If the hidden input field has a valid value, set that as the URL hash (window.location.hash again) and/or perform other actions.

We used jQuery to simplify the selecting of the field, etc ... all in all it ends up being a few jQuery calls, one to save the value, and another to restore it.

Before submit:

$("form").submit(function() {
  $("input", "#urlhash").val(window.location.hash);
});

On page load:

var hashVal = $("input", "#urlhash").val();
if (IsHashValid(hashVal)) {
  window.location.hash = hashVal;
}

IsHashValid() can check for "undefined" or other things you don't want to handle.

Also, make sure you use $(document).ready() appropriately, of course.

Removing elements from an array in C

There are really two separate issues. The first is keeping the elements of the array in proper order so that there are no "holes" after removing an element. The second is actually resizing the array itself.

Arrays in C are allocated as a fixed number of contiguous elements. There is no way to actually remove the memory used by an individual element in the array but the elements can be shifted to fill the hole made by removing an element. For example:

void remove_element(array_type *array, int index, int array_length)
{
   int i;
   for(i = index; i < array_length - 1; i++) array[i] = array[i + 1];
}

Statically allocated arrays can not be resized. Dynamically allocated arrays can be resized with realloc(). This will potentially move the entire array to another location in memory, so all pointers to the array or to its elements will have to be updated. For example:

remove_element(array, index, array_length); /* First shift the elements, then reallocate */
array_type *tmp = realloc(array, (array_length - 1) * sizeof(array_type) );
if (tmp == NULL && array_length > 1) {
   /* No memory available */
   exit(EXIT_FAILURE);
}
array_length = array_length - 1;
array = tmp;

realloc will return a NULL pointer if the requested size is 0, or if there is an error. Otherwise it returns a pointer to the reallocated array. The temporary pointer is used to detect errors when calling realloc because instead of exiting it is also possible to just leave the original array as it was. When realloc fails to reallocate an array it does not alter the original array.

Note that both of these operations will be fairly slow if the array is large or if a lot of elements are removed. There are other data structures like linked lists and hashes that can be used if efficient insertion and deletion is a priority.

How to fill OpenCV image with one solid color?

Here's how to do with cv2 in Python:

# Create a blank 300x300 black image
image = np.zeros((300, 300, 3), np.uint8)
# Fill image with red color(set each pixel to red)
image[:] = (0, 0, 255)

Here's more complete example how to create new blank image filled with a certain RGB color

import cv2
import numpy as np

def create_blank(width, height, rgb_color=(0, 0, 0)):
    """Create new image(numpy array) filled with certain color in RGB"""
    # Create black blank image
    image = np.zeros((height, width, 3), np.uint8)

    # Since OpenCV uses BGR, convert the color first
    color = tuple(reversed(rgb_color))
    # Fill image with color
    image[:] = color

    return image

# Create new blank 300x300 red image
width, height = 300, 300

red = (255, 0, 0)
image = create_blank(width, height, rgb_color=red)
cv2.imwrite('red.jpg', image)

If conditions in a Makefile, inside a target

You can simply use shell commands. If you want to suppress echoing the output, use the "@" sign. For example:

clean:
    @if [ "test" = "test" ]; then\
        echo "Hello world";\
    fi

Note that the closing ";" and "\" are necessary.

How do I set hostname in docker-compose?

The simplest way I have found is to just set the container name in the docker-compose.yml See container_name documentation. It is applicable to docker-compose v1+. It works for container to container, not from the host machine to container.

services:
  dns:
    image: phensley/docker-dns
    container_name: affy

Now you should be able to access affy from other containers using the container name. I had to do this for multiple redis servers in a development environment.

NOTE The solution works so long as you don't need to scale. Such as consistant individual developer environments.

Maintaining the final state at end of a CSS3 animation

If you are using more animation attributes the shorthand is:

animation: bubble 2s linear 0.5s 1 normal forwards;

This gives:

  • bubble animation name
  • 2s duration
  • linear timing-function
  • 0.5s delay
  • 1 iteration-count (can be 'infinite')
  • normal direction
  • forwards fill-mode (set 'backwards' if you want to have compatibility to use the end position as the final state[this is to support browsers that has animations turned off]{and to answer only the title, and not your specific case})

How to leave a message for a github.com user

This method was working as of December 2020

  1. Copy and paste the next line into your browser (feel free to bookmark it): https://api.github.com/users/xxxxxxx/events/public
  2. Find the GitHub username for which you want the email. Replace the xxxxxxx in the URL with the person's GitHub username. Hit Enter.
  3. Press Ctrl+F and search for “email”.

As suggested by qbolec, the above steps can be done by using this snippet:

How to escape special characters of a string with single backslashes

We could use built-in function repr() or string interpolation fr'{}' escape all backwardslashs \ in Python 3.7.*

repr('my_string') or fr'{my_string}'

Check the Link: https://docs.python.org/3/library/functions.html#repr

Django. Override save for model

Check the model's pk field. If it is None, then it is a new object.

class Model(model.Model):
    image=models.ImageField(upload_to='folder')
    thumb=models.ImageField(upload_to='folder')
    description=models.CharField()

    def save(self, *args, **kwargs):
        if 'form' in kwargs:
            form=kwargs['form']
        else:
            form=None

        if self.pk is None and form is not None and 'image' in form.changed_data:
            small=rescale_image(self.image,width=100,height=100)
            self.image_small=SimpleUploadedFile(name,small_pic)
        super(Model, self).save(*args, **kwargs)

Edit: I've added a check for 'image' in form.changed_data. This assumes that you're using the admin site to update your images. You'll also have to override the default save_model method as indicated below.

class ModelAdmin(admin.ModelAdmin):
    def save_model(self, request, obj, form, change):
        obj.save(form=form)

How do I read input character-by-character in Java?

You have several options if you use BufferedReader. This buffered reader is faster than Reader so you can wrap it.

BufferedReader reader = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(path));
reader.read(char[] buffer);

this reads line into char array. You have similar options. Look at documentation.

Looping through a hash, or using an array in PowerShell

Here is another quick way, just using the key as an index into the hash table to get the value:

$hash = @{
    'a' = 1;
    'b' = 2;
    'c' = 3
};

foreach($key in $hash.keys) {
    Write-Host ("Key = " + $key + " and Value = " + $hash[$key]);
}

Referencing value in a closed Excel workbook using INDIRECT?

OK,

Here's a dinosaur method for you on Office 2010.

Write the full address you want using concatenate (the "&" method of combining text).

Do this for all the addresses you need. It should look like:

="="&"'\FULL NETWORK ADDRESS including [Spreadsheet Name]"&W3&"'!$w4"

The W3 is a dynamic reference to what sheet I am using, the W4 is the cell I want to get from the sheet.

Once you have this, start up a macro recording session. Copy the cell and paste it into another. I pasted it into a merged cell and it gave me the classic "Same size" error. But one thing it did was paste the resulting text from my concatenate (including that extra "=").

Copy over however many you did this for. Then, go into each pasted cell, select he text and just hit enter. It updates it to an active direct reference.

Once you have finished, put the cursor somewhere nice and stop the macro. Assign it to a button and you are done.

It is a bit of a PITA to do this the first time, but once you have done it, you have just made the square peg fit that daamned round hole.

Detect encoding and make everything UTF-8

Detecting the encoding is hard.

mb_detect_encoding works by guessing, based on a number of candidates that you pass it. In some encodings, certain byte-sequences are invalid, an therefore it can distinguish between various candidates. Unfortunately, there are a lot of encodings, where the same bytes are valid (but different). In these cases, there is no way to determine the encoding; You can implement your own logic to make guesses in these cases. For example, data coming from a Japanese site might be more likely to have a Japanese encoding.

As long as you only deal with Western European languages, the three major encodings to consider are utf-8, iso-8859-1 and cp-1252. Since these are defaults for many platforms, they are also the most likely to be reported wrongly about. Eg. if people use different encodings, they are likely to be frank about it, since else their software would break very often. Therefore, a good strategy is to trust the provider, unless the encoding is reported as one of those three. You should still doublecheck that it is indeed valid, using mb_check_encoding (note that valid is not the same as being - the same input may be valid for many encodings). If it is one of those, you can then use mb_detect_encoding to distinguish between them. Luckily that is fairly deterministic; You just need to use the proper detect-sequence, which is UTF-8,ISO-8859-1,WINDOWS-1252.

Once you've detected the encoding you need to convert it to your internal representation (UTF-8 is the only sane choice). The function utf8_encode transforms ISO-8859-1 to UTF-8, so it can only used for that particular input type. For other encodings, use mb_convert_encoding.

How do I update a model value in JavaScript in a Razor view?

This should work

function updatePostID(val)
{
    document.getElementById('PostID').value = val;

    //and probably call document.forms[0].submit();
}

Then have a hidden field or other control for the PostID

@Html.Hidden("PostID", Model.addcomment.PostID)
//OR
@Html.HiddenFor(model => model.addcomment.PostID)

getting JRE system library unbound error in build path

Another option is:

  • Project > Properties > Java Build Path
  • Select Libraries tab
  • Select the troublesome JRE entry
  • Click Edit button
  • Choose an alternate JRE
  • Click Finish button

Pointing the project at your installed JRE might be a better choice than renaming your JRE to match the old project code.

Module 'tensorflow' has no attribute 'contrib'

tf.contrib has moved out of TF starting TF 2.0 alpha.
Take a look at these tf 2.0 release notes https://github.com/tensorflow/tensorflow/releases/tag/v2.0.0-alpha0
You can upgrade your TF 1.x code to TF 2.x using the tf_upgrade_v2 script https://www.tensorflow.org/alpha/guide/upgrade

SQL: capitalize first letter only

Are you asking for renaming column itself or capitalise the data inside column? If its data you've to change, then use this:

UPDATE [yourtable]
SET word=UPPER(LEFT(word,1))+LOWER(SUBSTRING(word,2,LEN(word)))

If you just wanted to change it only for displaying and do not need the actual data in table to change:

SELECT UPPER(LEFT(word,1))+LOWER(SUBSTRING(word,2,LEN(word))) FROM [yourtable]

Hope this helps.

EDIT: I realised about the '-' so here is my attempt to solve this problem in a function.

CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[CapitalizeFirstLetter]
(
--string need to format
@string VARCHAR(200)--increase the variable size depending on your needs.
)
RETURNS VARCHAR(200)
AS

BEGIN
--Declare Variables
DECLARE @Index INT,
@ResultString VARCHAR(200)--result string size should equal to the @string variable size
--Initialize the variables
SET @Index = 1
SET @ResultString = ''
--Run the Loop until END of the string

WHILE (@Index <LEN(@string)+1)
BEGIN
IF (@Index = 1)--first letter of the string
BEGIN
--make the first letter capital
SET @ResultString =
@ResultString + UPPER(SUBSTRING(@string, @Index, 1))
SET @Index = @Index+ 1--increase the index
END

-- IF the previous character is space or '-' or next character is '-'

ELSE IF ((SUBSTRING(@string, @Index-1, 1) =' 'or SUBSTRING(@string, @Index-1, 1) ='-' or SUBSTRING(@string, @Index+1, 1) ='-') and @Index+1 <> LEN(@string))
BEGIN
--make the letter capital
SET
@ResultString = @ResultString + UPPER(SUBSTRING(@string,@Index, 1))
SET
@Index = @Index +1--increase the index
END
ELSE-- all others
BEGIN
-- make the letter simple
SET
@ResultString = @ResultString + LOWER(SUBSTRING(@string,@Index, 1))
SET
@Index = @Index +1--incerase the index
END
END--END of the loop

IF (@@ERROR
<> 0)-- any error occur return the sEND string
BEGIN
SET
@ResultString = @string
END
-- IF no error found return the new string
RETURN @ResultString
END

So then the code would be:

UPDATE [yourtable]
SET word=dbo.CapitalizeFirstLetter([STRING TO GO HERE])

Find all CSV files in a directory using Python

While solution given by thclpr works it scans only immediate files in the directory and not files in the sub directories if any. Although this is not the requirement but just in case someone wishes to scan sub directories too below is the code that uses os.walk

import os
from glob import glob
PATH = "/home/someuser/projects/someproject"
EXT = "*.csv"
all_csv_files = [file
                 for path, subdir, files in os.walk(PATH)
                 for file in glob(os.path.join(path, EXT))]
print(all_csv_files)

Sending email through Gmail SMTP server with C#

You can also connect via port 465, but due to some limitations of the System.Net.Mail namespace you may have to alter your code. This is because the namespace does not offer the ability to make implicit SSL connections. This is discussed at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/webdav_101/archive/2008/06/02/system-net-mail-with-ssl-to-authenticate-against-port-465.aspx, and I have supplied an example of how to use the CDO (Collaborative Data Object) in another discussion (GMail SMTP via C# .Net errors on all ports).

c++ exception : throwing std::string

Simplest way to throw an Exception in C++:

#include <iostream>
using namespace std;
void purturb(){
    throw "Cannot purturb at this time.";
}
int main() {
    try{
        purturb();
    }
    catch(const char* msg){
        cout << "We caught a message: " << msg << endl;
    }
    cout << "done";
    return 0;
}

This prints:

We caught a message: Cannot purturb at this time.
done

If you catch the thrown exception, the exception is contained and the program will ontinue. If you do not catch the exception, then the program exists and prints:

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

How to store file name in database, with other info while uploading image to server using PHP?

Your part:

$result = mysql_connect("localhost", "******", "*****") or die ("Could not save image name

Error: " . mysql_error());

mysql_select_db("project") or die("Could not select database");
mysql_query("INSERT into dbProfiles (photo) VALUES('".$_FILES['filep']['name']."')");
if($result) { echo "Image name saved into database

";

Doesn't make much sense, your connection shouldn't be named $result but that is a naming issue not a coding one.

What is a coding issue is if($result), your saying if you can connect to the database regardless of the insert query failing or succeeding you will output "Image saved into database".

Try adding do

$realresult = mysql_query("INSERT into dbProfiles (photo) VALUES('".$_FILES['filep']['name']."')");

and change the if($result) to $realresult

I suspect your query is failing, perhaps you have additional columns or something?

Try copy/pasting your query, replacing the ".$_FILES['filep']['name']." with test and running it in your query browser and see if it goes in.

How do I configure the proxy settings so that Eclipse can download new plugins?

I installed HandyCache, in them install link on my general proxy.

In IE set proxy 127.0.0.1.

In Eclipse, Window > Preferences > General > Network Connections, set Active Provider = Native.

Redirect HTTP to HTTPS on default virtual host without ServerName

Both works fine. But according to the Apache docs you should avoid using mod_rewrite for simple redirections, and use Redirect instead. So according to them, you should preferably do:

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerName www.example.com
    Redirect / https://www.example.com/
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:443>
    ServerName www.example.com
    # ... SSL configuration goes here
</VirtualHost>

The first / after Redirect is the url, the second part is where it should be redirected.

You can also use it to redirect URLs to a subdomain: Redirect /one/ http://one.example.com/

PHP: if !empty & empty

Here's a compact way to do something different in all four cases:

if(empty($youtube)) {
    if(empty($link)) {
        # both empty
    } else {
        # only $youtube not empty
    }
} else {
    if(empty($link)) {
        # only $link empty
    } else {
        # both not empty
    }
}

If you want to use an expression instead, you can use ?: instead:

echo empty($youtube) ? ( empty($link) ? 'both empty' : 'only $youtube not empty' )
                     : ( empty($link) ? 'only $link empty' : 'both not empty' );

Why am I getting string does not name a type Error?

You can overcome this error in two simple ways

First way

using namespace std;
include <string>
// then you can use string class the normal way

Second way

// after including the class string in your cpp file as follows
include <string>
/*Now when you are using a string class you have to put **std::** before you write
string as follows*/
std::string name; // a string declaration

Difference between Width:100% and width:100vw?

You can solve this issue be adding max-width:

#element {
   width: 100vw;
   height: 100vw;
   max-width: 100%;
}

When you using CSS to make the wrapper full width using the code width: 100vw; then you will notice a horizontal scroll in the page, and that happened because the padding and margin of html and body tags added to the wrapper size, so the solution is to add max-width: 100%

jquery how to empty input field

Read/write files within a Linux kernel module

Since version 4.14 of Linux kernel, vfs_read and vfs_write functions are no longer exported for use in modules. Instead, functions exclusively for kernel's file access are provided:

# Read the file from the kernel space.
ssize_t kernel_read(struct file *file, void *buf, size_t count, loff_t *pos);

# Write the file from the kernel space.
ssize_t kernel_write(struct file *file, const void *buf, size_t count,
            loff_t *pos);

Also, filp_open no longer accepts user-space string, so it can be used for kernel access directly (without dance with set_fs).

Update your setuptools, too.

pip install setuptools --upgrade

If that fails too, you could try with additional --force flag.

How to display tables on mobile using Bootstrap?

You might also consider trying one of these approaches, since larger tables aren't exactly friendly on mobile even if it works:

I'm partial to 'No More Tables' but that obviously depends on your application.

Compiling and Running Java Code in Sublime Text 2

So this is what i added to the JavaC.sublime-build file

{
    "cmd": ["javac", "-Xlint", "$file"],
    "file_regex": "^(...*?):([0-9]*):?([0-9]*)",
    "selector": "source.java",

    "variants": [

        { "cmd": ["javac", "-Xlint", "$file"],
          "file_regex": "^(...*?):([0-9]*):?([0-9]*)",
          "selector": "source.java",
          "name": "Java Lintter"
        },

        { "cmd": ["java", "$file_base_name"],
          "name": "Run Java"
        }
    ]
}

What this does is that it creates variants to the regular build command (ctrl+b). With ctrl+b you will still be able to compile your code. If you do shift+ctrl+b the first variant will be executed, which in this case is javac with the -Xlint option. The second and final variant is the java command itself. you can place this as your first variant and shift+ctrl+b will actually execute the java code.

Also, notice that each variant as a "name". This basically allows this specific "build" option to show up in the shift+ctrl+p option. So using this configuration, you can simply do shift+ctrl+p and type "Run Java" and hit enter, and your code will execute.

Hope this helped.
