What is the preferred/idiomatic way to insert into a map?

In short, [] operator is more efficient for updating values because it involves calling default constructor of the value type and then assigning it a new value, while insert() is more efficient for adding values.

The quoted snippet from Effective STL: 50 Specific Ways to Improve Your Use of the Standard Template Library by Scott Meyers, Item 24 might help.

template<typename MapType, typename KeyArgType, typename ValueArgType>
typename MapType::iterator
insertKeyAndValue(MapType& m, const KeyArgType&k, const ValueArgType& v)
{
    typename MapType::iterator lb = m.lower_bound(k);

    if (lb != m.end() && !(m.key_comp()(k, lb->first))) {
        lb->second = v;
        return lb;
    } else {
        typedef typename MapType::value_type MVT;
        return m.insert(lb, MVT(k, v));
    }
}

You may decide to choose a generic-programming-free version of this, but the point is that I find this paradigm (differentiating 'add' and 'update') extremely useful.

Converting Columns into rows with their respective data in sql server

i solved the query this way

SELECT

CROSS APPLY (
      Values
         ('ID' , cast(ID as varchar)),
         ('[Name]' , Name)

  ) as CA (ID, Name)

output look like

  ID     Name
------ --------------------------------------------------
ID     1
[Name] Joy

Hide/Show Action Bar Option Menu Item for different fragments

Even though the question is old and answered. There is a simpler answer to that than the above mentioned. You don't need to use any other variables. You can create the buttons on action bar whatever the fragment you want, instead of doing the visibility stuff(show/hide).

Add the following in the fragment whatever u need the menu item.

public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu, MenuInflater inflater) {
    inflater.inflate(R.menu.menu, menu);
    super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu, inflater);
}

Sample menu.xml file:

<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" >
    <item
        android:id="@+id/action_addFlat"
        android:icon="@drawable/add"
        android:showAsAction="ifRoom|withText"
        android:title="@string/action_addFlat"/>
</menu>

Handling onclick events is as usual.

How to square or raise to a power (elementwise) a 2D numpy array?

The fastest way is to do a*a or a**2 or np.square(a) whereas np.power(a, 2) showed to be considerably slower.

np.power() allows you to use different exponents for each element if instead of 2 you pass another array of exponents. From the comments of @GarethRees I just learned that this function will give you different results than a**2 or a*a, which become important in cases where you have small tolerances.

I've timed some examples using NumPy 1.9.0 MKL 64 bit, and the results are shown below:

In [29]: a = np.random.random((1000, 1000))

In [30]: timeit a*a
100 loops, best of 3: 2.78 ms per loop

In [31]: timeit a**2
100 loops, best of 3: 2.77 ms per loop

In [32]: timeit np.power(a, 2)
10 loops, best of 3: 71.3 ms per loop

How to properly import a selfsigned certificate into Java keystore that is available to all Java applications by default?

On Windows the easiest way is to use the program portecle.

  1. Download and install portecle.
  2. First make 100% sure you know which JRE or JDK is being used to run your program. On a 64 bit Windows 7 there could be quite a few JREs. Process Explorer can help you with this or you can use: System.out.println(System.getProperty("java.home"));
  3. Copy the file JAVA_HOME\lib\security\cacerts to another folder.
  4. In Portecle click File > Open Keystore File
  5. Select the cacerts file
  6. Enter this password: changeit
  7. Click Tools > Import Trusted Certificate
  8. Browse for the file mycertificate.pem
  9. Click Import
  10. Click OK for the warning about the trust path.
  11. Click OK when it displays the details about the certificate.
  12. Click Yes to accept the certificate as trusted.
  13. When it asks for an alias click OK and click OK again when it says it has imported the certificate.
  14. Click save. Don’t forget this or the change is discarded.
  15. Copy the file cacerts back where you found it.

On Linux:

You can download the SSL certificate from a web server that is already using it like this:

$ echo -n | openssl s_client -connect www.example.com:443 | \
   sed -ne '/-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-/,/-END CERTIFICATE-/p' > /tmp/examplecert.crt

Optionally verify the certificate information:

$ openssl x509 -in /tmp/examplecert.crt -text

Import the certificate into the Java cacerts keystore:

$ keytool -import -trustcacerts -keystore /opt/java/jre/lib/security/cacerts \
   -storepass changeit -noprompt -alias mycert -file /tmp/examplecert.crt

Convert List<String> to List<Integer> directly

No, you will have to iterate over each element:

for(String number : numbers) {
   numberList.add(Integer.parseInt(number));
}

The reason this happens is that there is no straightforward way to convert a list of one type into any other type. Some conversions are not possible, or need to be done in a specific way. Essentially the conversion depends on the objects involved and the context of the conversion so there is no "one size fits all" solution. For example, what if you had a Car object and a Person object. You can't convert a List<Car> into a List<Person> directly since it doesn't really make sense.

What is the difference between & vs @ and = in angularJS

AngularJS – Isolated Scopes – @ vs = vs &

Short examples with explanation are available at below link :

http://www.codeforeach.com/angularjs/angularjs-isolated-scopes-vs-vs

@ – one way binding

In directive:

scope : { nameValue : "@name" }

In view:

<my-widget name="{{nameFromParentScope}}"></my-widget>

= – two way binding

In directive:

scope : { nameValue : "=name" },
link : function(scope) {
  scope.name = "Changing the value here will get reflected in parent scope value";
}

In view:

<my-widget name="{{nameFromParentScope}}"></my-widget>

& – Function call

In directive :

scope : { nameChange : "&" }
link : function(scope) {
  scope.nameChange({newName:"NameFromIsolaltedScope"});
}

In view:

<my-widget nameChange="onNameChange(newName)"></my-widget>

using batch echo with special characters

The answer from Joey was not working for me. After executing

  echo ^<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?^> > myfile.xml

I got this error bash: syntax error near unexpected token `>'

This solution worked for me:

 echo "<?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"utf-8\">" > myfile.txt

How to get a web page's source code from Java

Try the following code with an added request property:

import java.io.BufferedReader;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.io.InputStream;
import java.io.InputStreamReader;
import java.net.URL;
import java.net.URLConnection;

public class SocketConnection
{
    public static String getURLSource(String url) throws IOException
    {
        URL urlObject = new URL(url);
        URLConnection urlConnection = urlObject.openConnection();
        urlConnection.setRequestProperty("User-Agent", "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64) AppleWebKit/537.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/23.0.1271.95 Safari/537.11");

        return toString(urlConnection.getInputStream());
    }

    private static String toString(InputStream inputStream) throws IOException
    {
        try (BufferedReader bufferedReader = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(inputStream, "UTF-8")))
        {
            String inputLine;
            StringBuilder stringBuilder = new StringBuilder();
            while ((inputLine = bufferedReader.readLine()) != null)
            {
                stringBuilder.append(inputLine);
            }

            return stringBuilder.toString();
        }
    }
}

Add disabled attribute to input element using Javascript

$("input").attr("disabled", true); as of... I don't know any more.

It's December 2013 and I really have no idea what to tell you.

First it was always .attr(), then it was always .prop(), so I came back here updated the answer and made it more accurate.

Then a year later jQuery changed their minds again and I don't even want to keep track of this.

Long story short, as of right now, this is the best answer: "you can use both... but it depends."

You should read this answer instead: https://stackoverflow.com/a/5876747/257493

And their release notes for that change are included here:

Neither .attr() nor .prop() should be used for getting/setting value. Use the .val() method instead (although using .attr("value", "somevalue") will continue to work, as it did before 1.6).

Summary of Preferred Usage

The .prop() method should be used for boolean attributes/properties and for properties which do not exist in html (such as window.location). All other attributes (ones you can see in the html) can and should continue to be manipulated with the .attr() method.

Or in other words:

".prop = non-document stuff"

".attr" = document stuff

relative path in require_once doesn't work

Use

__DIR__

to get the current path of the script and this should fix your problem.

So:

require_once(__DIR__.'/../class/user.php');

This will prevent cases where you can run a PHP script from a different folder and therefore the relatives paths will not work.

Edit: slash problem fixed

What's the difference between @JoinColumn and mappedBy when using a JPA @OneToMany association

The annotation @JoinColumn indicates that this entity is the owner of the relationship (that is: the corresponding table has a column with a foreign key to the referenced table), whereas the attribute mappedBy indicates that the entity in this side is the inverse of the relationship, and the owner resides in the "other" entity. This also means that you can access the other table from the class which you've annotated with "mappedBy" (fully bidirectional relationship).

In particular, for the code in the question the correct annotations would look like this:

@Entity
public class Company {
    @OneToMany(mappedBy = "company",
               orphanRemoval = true,
               fetch = FetchType.LAZY,
               cascade = CascadeType.ALL)
    private List<Branch> branches;
}

@Entity
public class Branch {
    @ManyToOne(fetch = FetchType.LAZY)
    @JoinColumn(name = "companyId")
    private Company company;
}

How to use Comparator in Java to sort

For the sake of completeness, here's a simple one-liner compare method:

Collections.sort(people, new Comparator<Person>() {
    @Override
    public int compare(Person lhs, Person rhs) {
        return Integer.signum(lhs.getId() - rhs.getId());
    }
});

Removing duplicates from a String in Java

Another possible solution, in case a string is an ASCII string, is to maintain an array of 256 boolean elements to denote ASCII character appearance in a string. If a character appeared for the first time, we keep it and append to the result. Otherwise just skip it.

public String removeDuplicates(String input) {
    boolean[] chars = new boolean[256];
    StringBuilder resultStringBuilder = new StringBuilder();
    for (Character c : input.toCharArray()) {
        if (!chars[c]) {
            resultStringBuilder.append(c);
            chars[c] = true;
        }
    }
    return resultStringBuilder.toString();
}

This approach will also work with Unicode string. You just need to increase chars size.

How to extract multiple JSON objects from one file?

Update: I wrote a solution that doesn't require reading the entire file in one go. It's too big for a stackoverflow answer, but can be found here jsonstream.

You can use json.JSONDecoder.raw_decode to decode arbitarily big strings of "stacked" JSON (so long as they can fit in memory). raw_decode stops once it has a valid object and returns the last position where wasn't part of the parsed object. It's not documented, but you can pass this position back to raw_decode and it start parsing again from that position. Unfortunately, the Python json module doesn't accept strings that have prefixing whitespace. So we need to search to find the first none-whitespace part of your document.

from json import JSONDecoder, JSONDecodeError
import re

NOT_WHITESPACE = re.compile(r'[^\s]')

def decode_stacked(document, pos=0, decoder=JSONDecoder()):
    while True:
        match = NOT_WHITESPACE.search(document, pos)
        if not match:
            return
        pos = match.start()

        try:
            obj, pos = decoder.raw_decode(document, pos)
        except JSONDecodeError:
            # do something sensible if there's some error
            raise
        yield obj

s = """

{"a": 1}

   [
1
,
2
]

"""

for obj in decode_stacked(s):
    print(obj)

prints:

{'a': 1}
[1, 2]

Difference between id and name attributes in HTML

Generally, it is assumed that name is always superseded by id. This is true, to some extent, but not for form fields and frame names, practically speaking. For example, with form elements the name attribute is used to determine the name-value pairs to be sent to a server-side program and should not be eliminated. Browsers do not use id in that manner. To be on the safe side, you could use name and id attributes on form elements. So, we would write the following:

<form id="myForm" name="myForm">
     <input type="text" id="userName" name="userName" />
</form>

To ensure compatibility, having matching name and id attribute values when both are defined is a good idea. However, be careful—some tags, particularly radio buttons, must have nonunique name values, but require unique id values. Once again, this should reference that id is not simply a replacement for name; they are different in purpose. Furthermore, do not discount the old-style approach, a deep look at modern libraries shows such syntax style used for performance and ease purposes at times. Your goal should always be in favor of compatibility.

Now in most elements, the name attribute has been deprecated in favor of the more ubiquitous id attribute. However, in some cases, particularly form fields (<button>, <input>, <select>, and <textarea>), the name attribute lives on because it continues to be required to set the name-value pair for form submission. Also, we find that some elements, notably frames and links, may continue to use the name attribute because it is often useful for retrieving these elements by name.

There is a clear distinction between id and name. Very often when name continues on, we can set the values the same. However, id must be unique, and name in some cases shouldn’t—think radio buttons. Sadly, the uniqueness of id values, while caught by markup validation, is not as consistent as it should be. CSS implementation in browsers will style objects that share an id value; thus, we may not catch markup or style errors that could affect our JavaScript until runtime.

How to get the last character of a string in a shell?

Per @perreal, quoting variables is important, but because I read this post like 5 times before finding a simpler approach to the question at hand in the comments...

str='abcd/'
echo "${str: -1}"

Output: /

str='abcd*'
echo "${str: -1}"

Output: *

Thanks to everyone who participated in this above; I've appropriately added +1's throughout the thread!

Check if a PHP cookie exists and if not set its value

Cookies are only sent at the time of the request, and therefore cannot be retrieved as soon as it is assigned (only available after reloading).

Once the cookies have been set, they can be accessed on the next page load with the $_COOKIE or $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS arrays.

If output exists prior to calling this function, setcookie() will fail and return FALSE. If setcookie() successfully runs, it will return TRUE. This does not indicate whether the user accepted the cookie.

Cookies will not become visible until the next loading of a page that the cookie should be visible for. To test if a cookie was successfully set, check for the cookie on a next loading page before the cookie expires. Expire time is set via the expire parameter. A nice way to debug the existence of cookies is by simply calling print_r($_COOKIE);.

Initializing array of structures

There are only two syntaxes at play here.

  1. Plain old array initialisation:

    int x[] = {0, 0}; // x[0] = 0, x[1] = 0

  2. A designated initialiser. See the accepted answer to this question: How to initialize a struct in accordance with C programming language standards

    The syntax is pretty self-explanatory though. You can initialise like this:

    struct X {
        int a;
        int b;
    }
    struct X foo = { 0, 1 }; // a = 0, b = 1

    or to use any ordering,

    struct X foo = { .b = 0, .a = 1 }; // a = 1, b = 0

Most popular screen sizes/resolutions on Android phones

The vast majority of current android 2.1+ phone screens are 480x800 (or in the case of motodroid oddities, 480x854)

However, this doesn't mean this should be your only concern. You need to make it looking good on tablets, and smaller or 4:3 ratio smaller screens.

Retrieve column names from java.sql.ResultSet

U can get column name and value from resultSet.getMetaData(); This code work for me:

Html.fromHtml deprecated in Android N

If you are lucky enough to develop on Kotlin, just create an extension function:

fun String.toSpanned(): Spanned {
    if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.N) {
        return Html.fromHtml(this, Html.FROM_HTML_MODE_LEGACY)
    } else {
        @Suppress("DEPRECATION")
        return Html.fromHtml(this)
    }
}

And then it's so sweet to use it everywhere:

yourTextView.text = anyString.toSpanned()

Compare two different files line by line in python

Yet another example...

from __future__ import print_function #Only for Python2

with open('file1.txt') as f1, open('file2.txt') as f2, open('outfile.txt', 'w') as outfile:
    for line1, line2 in zip(f1, f2):
        if line1 == line2:
            print(line1, end='', file=outfile)

And if you want to eliminate common blank lines, just change the if statement to:

if line1.strip() and line1 == line2:

.strip() removes all leading and trailing whitespace, so if that's all that's on a line, it will become an empty string "", which is considered false.

How do I get first element rather than using [0] in jQuery?

Granting Rights on Stored Procedure to another user of Oracle

Packages and stored procedures in Oracle execute by default using the rights of the package/procedure OWNER, not the currently logged on user.

So if you call a package that creates a user for example, its the package owner, not the calling user that needs create user privilege. The caller just needs to have execute permission on the package.

If you would prefer that the package should be run using the calling user's permissions, then when creating the package you need to specify AUTHID CURRENT_USER

Oracle documentation "Invoker Rights vs Definer Rights" has more information http://docs.oracle.com/cd/A97630_01/appdev.920/a96624/08_subs.htm#18575

Hope this helps.

Tainted canvases may not be exported

In my case I was drawing onto a canvas tag from a video. To address the tainted canvas error I had to do two things:

<video id="video_source" crossorigin="anonymous">
    <source src="http://crossdomain.example.com/myfile.mp4">
</video>
  • Ensure Access-Control-Allow-Origin header is set in the video source response (proper setup of crossdomain.example.com)
  • Set the video tag to have crossorigin="anonymous"

How to change the Eclipse default workspace?

If you mean to change the directory in which the program execution will occur, go to "Run configurations" in the Run tab.

Then select your project and go to the "Arguments" tab, you can change the directory there. By default it is the root directory of your project.

XML Schema (XSD) validation tool?

You can connect your XML schema to Microsoft Visual Studio's Intellisense. This option gives you both real-time validation AND autocomplete, which is just awesome.

I have this exact scenario running on my free copy of Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Express.

The HTTP request is unauthorized with client authentication scheme 'Ntlm' The authentication header received from the server was 'NTLM'

I would try to connect to your Sharepoint site with this tool here. If that works you can be sure that the problem is in your code / configuration. That maybe does not solve your problem immediately but it rules out that there is something wrong with the server. Assuming that it does not work I would investigate the following:

  • Does your user really have enough rights on the site?
  • Is there a proxy that interferes? (Your configuration looks a bit like there is a proxy. Can you bypass it?)

I think there is nothing wrong with using security mode Transport, but I am not so sure about the proxyCredentialType="Ntlm", maybe this should be set to None.

How can I get CMake to find my alternative Boost installation?

After digging around in CMake and experimenting, I determined that CMake was unhappy with the fact that all of my Boost libraries were contained in /usr/local/lib/boost and not /usr/local/lib. Once I soft-linked them back out, the build worked.

Insert a row to pandas dataframe

It is pretty simple to add a row into a pandas DataFrame:

  1. Create a regular Python dictionary with the same columns names as your Dataframe;

  2. Use pandas.append() method and pass in the name of your dictionary, where .append() is a method on DataFrame instances;

  3. Add ignore_index=True right after your dictionary name.

How do I drop a foreign key in SQL Server?

This will work:

Use tab to indent in textarea

I see this subject is not solved. I coded this and it's working very well. It insert a tabulation at the cursor index. Without using jquery

<textarea id="myArea"></textarea>
<script>
document.getElementById("myArea").addEventListener("keydown",function(event){
    if(event.code==="Tab"){
        var cIndex=this.selectionStart;
        this.value=[this.value.slice(0,cIndex),//Slice at cursor index
            "\t",                              //Add Tab
            this.value.slice(cIndex)].join('');//Join with the end
        event.stopPropagation();
        event.preventDefault();                //Don't quit the area
        this.selectionStart=cIndex+1;
        this.selectionEnd=cIndex+1; //Keep the cursor in the right index
    }
});
</script>

Send email with PHPMailer - embed image in body

According to PHPMailer Manual, full answer would be :

$mail->AddEmbeddedImage(filename, cid, name);
//Example
$mail->AddEmbeddedImage('my-photo.jpg', 'my-photo', 'my-photo.jpg ');

Use Case :

$mail->AddEmbeddedImage("rocks.png", "my-attach", "rocks.png");
$mail->Body = 'Embedded Image: <img alt="PHPMailer" src="cid:my-attach"> Here is an image!';

If you want to display an image with a remote URL :

$mail->addStringAttachment(file_get_contents("url"), "filename");

Working with huge files in VIM

I had a 12GB file to edit today. The vim LargeFile plugin did not work for me. It still used up all my memory and then printed an error message :-(. I could not use hexedit for either, as it cannot insert anything, just overwrite. Here is an alternative approach:

You split the file, edit the parts and then recombine it. You still need twice the disk space though.

  • Grep for something surrounding the line you would like to edit:

    grep -n 'something' HUGEFILE | head -n 1

  • Extract that range of the file. Say the lines you want to edit are at line 4 and 5. Then do:

    sed -n -e '4,5p' -e '5q' HUGEFILE > SMALLPART

    • The -n option is required to suppress the default behaviour of sed to print everything
    • 4,5p prints lines 4 and 5
    • 5q aborts sed after processing line 5
  • Edit SMALLPART using your favourite editor.

  • Combine the file:

    (head -n 3 HUGEFILE; cat SMALLPART; sed -e '1,5d' HUGEFILE) > HUGEFILE.new

    • i.e: pick all the lines before the edited lines from the HUGEFILE (which in this case is the top 3 lines), combine it with the edited lines (in this case lines 4 and 5) and use this combined set of lines to replace the equivalent (in this case the top 5 lines) in the HUGEFILE and write it all to a new file.

    HUGEFILE.new will now be your edited file, you can delete the original HUGEFILE.

php multidimensional array get values

This is the way to iterate on this array:

foreach($hotels as $row) {
       foreach($row['rooms'] as $k) {
             echo $k['boards']['board_id'];
             echo $k['boards']['price'];
       }
}

You want to iterate on the hotels and the rooms (the ones with numeric indexes), because those seem to be the "collections" in this case. The other arrays only hold and group properties.

Is there a unique Android device ID?

android.telephony.TelephonyManager.getDeviceId()

This will return whatever string uniquely identifies the device (IMEI on GSM, MEID for CDMA).

You'll need the following permission in your AndroidManifest.xml:

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.READ_PHONE_STATE" />

When do you use the "this" keyword?

I can't believe all of the people that say using it always is a "best practice" and such.

Use "this" when there is ambiguity, as in Corey's example or when you need to pass the object as a parameter, as in Ryan's example. There is no reason to use it otherwise because being able to resolve a variable based on the scope chain should be clear enough that qualifying variables with it should be unnecessary.

EDIT: The C# documentation on "this" indicates one more use, besides the two I mentioned, for the "this" keyword - for declaring indexers

EDIT: @Juan: Huh, I don't see any inconsistency in my statements - there are 3 instances when I would use the "this" keyword (as documented in the C# documentation), and those are times when you actually need it. Sticking "this" in front of variables in a constructor when there is no shadowing going on is simply a waste of keystrokes and a waste of my time when reading it, it provides no benefit.

Constructor in an Interface?

A work around you can try is defining a getInstance() method in your interface so the implementer is aware of what parameters need to be handled. It isn't as solid as an abstract class, but it allows more flexibility as being an interface.

However this workaround does require you to use the getInstance() to instantiate all objects of this interface.

E.g.

public interface Module {
    Module getInstance(Receiver receiver);
}

Regex for 1 or 2 digits, optional non-alphanumeric, 2 known alphas

^[0-9][0-9]?[^A-Za-z0-9]?po$

You can test it here: http://www.regextester.com/

To use this in C#,

Regex r = new Regex(@"^[0-9][0-9]?[^A-Za-z0-9]?po$");
if (r.Match(someText).Success) {
   //Do Something
}

Remember, @ is a useful symbol that means the parser takes the string literally (eg, you don't need to write \\ for one backslash)

Delimiters in MySQL

When you create a stored routine that has a BEGIN...END block, statements within the block are terminated by semicolon (;). But the CREATE PROCEDURE statement also needs a terminator. So it becomes ambiguous whether the semicolon within the body of the routine terminates CREATE PROCEDURE, or terminates one of the statements within the body of the procedure.

The way to resolve the ambiguity is to declare a distinct string (which must not occur within the body of the procedure) that the MySQL client recognizes as the true terminator for the CREATE PROCEDURE statement.

How to create SPF record for multiple IPs?

Set folder for classpath

Use the command as

java -classpath ".;C:\MyLibs\a\*;D:\MyLibs\b\*" <your-class-name>

The above command will set the mentioned paths to classpath only once for executing the class named TestClass.

If you want to execute more then one classes, then you can follow this

set classpath=".;C:\MyLibs\a\*;D:\MyLibs\b\*"

After this you can execute as many classes as you want just by simply typing

java <your-class-name>

The above command will work till you close the command prompt. But after closing the command prompt, if you will reopen the command prompt and try to execute some classes, then you have to again set the classpath with the help of any of the above two mentioned methods.(First method for executing one class and second one for executing more classes)

If you want to set the classpth only once so that it could work for everytime, then do as follows

1. Right click on "My Computer" icon
2. Go to the "properties"
3. Go to the "Advanced System Settings" or "Advance Settings"
4. Go to the "Environment Variable"
5. Create a new variable at the user variable by giving the information as below
    a.  Variable Name-     classpath
    b.  Variable Value-    .;C:\program files\jdk 1.6.0\bin;C:\MyLibs\a\';C:\MyLibs\b\*
6.Apply this and you are done.

Remember this will work every time. You don't need to explicitly set the classpath again and again.

NOTE: If you want to add some other libs after some day, then don't forget to add a semi-colon at the end of the "variable-value" of the "Environment Variable" and then type the path of your new libs after the semi-colon. Because semi-colon separates the paths of different directories.

Hope this will help you.

What is the maximum number of characters that nvarchar(MAX) will hold?

From char and varchar (Transact-SQL)

varchar [ ( n | max ) ]

Variable-length, non-Unicode character data. n can be a value from 1 through 8,000. max indicates that the maximum storage size is 2^31-1 bytes. The storage size is the actual length of data entered + 2 bytes. The data entered can be 0 characters in length. The ISO synonyms for varchar are char varying or character varying.

How to remove all MySQL tables from the command-line without DROP database permissions?

The accepted answer does not work for databases that have large numbers of tables, e.g. Drupal databases. Instead, see the script here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/12917793/1507877 which does work on MySQL 5.5. CAUTION: Around line 11, there is a "WHERE table_schema = SCHEMA();" This should instead be "WHERE table_schema = 'INSERT NAME OF DB INTO WHICH IMPORT WILL OCCUR';"

How to make Google Fonts work in IE?

It's all about trying all those answers, for me, nothing works except the next solution: Google font suggested

@import 'https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Assistant';

But, I'm using here foreign language fonts, and it didn't work on IE11 only. I found out this solution that worked:

@import 'https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Assistant&subset=hebrew';

Hope that save someone precious time

.rar, .zip files MIME Type

In a linked question, there's some Objective-C code to get the mime type for a file URL. I've created a Swift extension based on that Objective-C code to get the mime type:

import Foundation
import MobileCoreServices

extension URL {
    var mimeType: String? {
        guard self.pathExtension.count != 0 else {
            return nil
        }

        let pathExtension = self.pathExtension as CFString
        if let preferredIdentifier = UTTypeCreatePreferredIdentifierForTag(kUTTagClassFilenameExtension, pathExtension, nil) {
            guard let mimeType = UTTypeCopyPreferredTagWithClass(preferredIdentifier.takeRetainedValue(), kUTTagClassMIMEType) else {
                return nil
            }
            return mimeType.takeRetainedValue() as String
        }

        return nil
    }
}

Finalize vs Dispose

To answer on the first part you should provide examples where people use different approach for the exact same class-object. Otherwise it is difficult (or even strange) to answer.

As for the second question better read first this Proper use of the IDisposable interface which claims that

It's your choice! But choose Dispose.

In other words: The GC only knows about finalizer (if any. Also known as destructor to Microsoft). A good code will attempt to cleanup from both (finalizer and Dispose).

How to solve privileges issues when restore PostgreSQL Database

For people using AWS, the COMMENT ON EXTENSION is possible only as superuser, and as we know by the docs, RDS instances are managed by Amazon. As such, to prevent you from breaking things like replication, your users - even the root user you set up when you create the instance - will not have full superuser privileges:

http://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/UserGuide/Appendix.PostgreSQL.CommonDBATasks.html

When you create a DB instance, the master user system account that you create is assigned to the rds_superuser role. The rds_superuser role is a pre-defined Amazon RDS role similar to the PostgreSQL superuser role (customarily named postgres in local instances), but with some restrictions. As with the PostgreSQL superuser role, the rds_superuser role has the most privileges on your DB instance and you should not assign this role to users unless they need the most access to the DB instance.

In order to fix this error, just use -- to comment out the lines of SQL that contains COMMENT ON EXTENSION

Meaning of - <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

The XML declaration in the document map consists of the following:

The version number, ?xml version="1.0"?.

This is mandatory. Although the number might change for future versions of XML, 1.0 is the current version.

The encoding declaration,

encoding="UTF-8"?

This is optional. If used, the encoding declaration must appear immediately after the version information in the XML declaration, and must contain a value representing an existing character encoding.

.htaccess or .htpasswd equivalent on IIS?

There isn't a direct 1:1 equivalent.

You can password protect a folder or file using file system permissions. If you are using ASP.Net you can also use some of its built in functions to protect various urls.

Pandas - Get first row value of a given column

To select the ith row, use iloc:

In [31]: df_test.iloc[0]
Out[31]:
ATime     1.2
X         2.0
Y        15.0
Z         2.0
Btime     1.2
C        12.0
D        25.0
E        12.0
Name: 0, dtype: float64

To select the ith value in the Btime column you could use:

In [30]: df_test['Btime'].iloc[0]
Out[30]: 1.2

There is a difference between df_test['Btime'].iloc[0] (recommended) and df_test.iloc[0]['Btime']:

DataFrames store data in column-based blocks (where each block has a single dtype). If you select by column first, a view can be returned (which is quicker than returning a copy) and the original dtype is preserved. In contrast, if you select by row first, and if the DataFrame has columns of different dtypes, then Pandas copies the data into a new Series of object dtype. So selecting columns is a bit faster than selecting rows. Thus, although df_test.iloc[0]['Btime'] works, df_test['Btime'].iloc[0] is a little bit more efficient.

There is a big difference between the two when it comes to assignment. df_test['Btime'].iloc[0] = x affects df_test, but df_test.iloc[0]['Btime'] may not. See below for an explanation of why. Because a subtle difference in the order of indexing makes a big difference in behavior, it is better to use single indexing assignment:

df.iloc[0, df.columns.get_loc('Btime')] = x

df.iloc[0, df.columns.get_loc('Btime')] = x (recommended):

The recommended way to assign new values to a DataFrame is to avoid chained indexing, and instead use the method shown by andrew,

df.loc[df.index[n], 'Btime'] = x

or

df.iloc[n, df.columns.get_loc('Btime')] = x

The latter method is a bit faster, because df.loc has to convert the row and column labels to positional indices, so there is a little less conversion necessary if you use df.iloc instead.

df['Btime'].iloc[0] = x works, but is not recommended:

Although this works, it is taking advantage of the way DataFrames are currently implemented. There is no guarantee that Pandas has to work this way in the future. In particular, it is taking advantage of the fact that (currently) df['Btime'] always returns a view (not a copy) so df['Btime'].iloc[n] = x can be used to assign a new value at the nth location of the Btime column of df.

Since Pandas makes no explicit guarantees about when indexers return a view versus a copy, assignments that use chained indexing generally always raise a SettingWithCopyWarning even though in this case the assignment succeeds in modifying df:

In [22]: df = pd.DataFrame({'foo':list('ABC')}, index=[0,2,1])
In [24]: df['bar'] = 100
In [25]: df['bar'].iloc[0] = 99
/home/unutbu/data/binky/bin/ipython:1: SettingWithCopyWarning:
A value is trying to be set on a copy of a slice from a DataFrame

See the caveats in the documentation: http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/indexing.html#indexing-view-versus-copy
  self._setitem_with_indexer(indexer, value)

In [26]: df
Out[26]:
  foo  bar
0   A   99  <-- assignment succeeded
2   B  100
1   C  100

df.iloc[0]['Btime'] = x does not work:

In contrast, assignment with df.iloc[0]['bar'] = 123 does not work because df.iloc[0] is returning a copy:

In [66]: df.iloc[0]['bar'] = 123
/home/unutbu/data/binky/bin/ipython:1: SettingWithCopyWarning:
A value is trying to be set on a copy of a slice from a DataFrame

See the caveats in the documentation: http://pandas.pydata.org/pandas-docs/stable/indexing.html#indexing-view-versus-copy

In [67]: df
Out[67]:
  foo  bar
0   A   99  <-- assignment failed
2   B  100
1   C  100

Warning: I had previously suggested df_test.ix[i, 'Btime']. But this is not guaranteed to give you the ith value since ix tries to index by label before trying to index by position. So if the DataFrame has an integer index which is not in sorted order starting at 0, then using ix[i] will return the row labeled i rather than the ith row. For example,

In [1]: df = pd.DataFrame({'foo':list('ABC')}, index=[0,2,1])

In [2]: df
Out[2]:
  foo
0   A
2   B
1   C

In [4]: df.ix[1, 'foo']
Out[4]: 'C'

How to change fonts in matplotlib (python)?

You can also use rcParams to change the font family globally.

 import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
 plt.rcParams["font.family"] = "cursive"
 # This will change to your computer's default cursive font

The list of matplotlib's font family arguments is here.

How do you clone an Array of Objects in Javascript?

I'm answering this question because there doesn't seem to be a simple and explicit solution to the problem of "cloning an array of objects in Javascript":

function deepCopy (arr) {
    var out = [];
    for (var i = 0, len = arr.length; i < len; i++) {
        var item = arr[i];
        var obj = {};
        for (var k in item) {
            obj[k] = item[k];
        }
        out.push(obj);
    }
    return out;
}

// test case

var original = [
    {'a' : 1},
    {'b' : 2}
    ];

var copy = deepCopy(original);

// change value in copy
copy[0]['a'] = 'not 1';

// original[0]['a'] still equals 1

This solution iterates the array values, then iterates the object keys, saving the latter to a new object, and then pushing that new object to a new array.

See jsfiddle. Note: a simple .slice() or [].concat() isn't enough for the objects within the array.

What's the difference between Git Revert, Checkout and Reset?

If you broke the tree but didn't commit the code, you can use git reset, and if you just want to restore one file, you can use git checkout.

If you broke the tree and committed the code, you can use git revert HEAD.

String comparison using '==' vs. 'strcmp()'

Don't use == in PHP. It will not do what you expect. Even if you are comparing strings to strings, PHP will implicitly cast them to floats and do a numerical comparison if they appear numerical.

For example '1e3' == '1000' returns true. You should use === instead.

How do you Make A Repeat-Until Loop in C++?

When you want to check the condition at the beginning of the loop, simply negate the condition on a standard while loop:

Popup Message boxes

javax.swing.JOptionPane

Here is the code to a method I call whenever I want an information box to pop up, it hogs the screen until it is accepted:

import javax.swing.JOptionPane;

public class ClassNameHere
{

    public static void infoBox(String infoMessage, String titleBar)
    {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, infoMessage, "InfoBox: " + titleBar, JOptionPane.INFORMATION_MESSAGE);
    }
}

The first JOptionPane parameter (null in this example) is used to align the dialog. null causes it to center itself on the screen, however any java.awt.Component can be specified and the dialog will appear in the center of that Component instead.

I tend to use the titleBar String to describe where in the code the box is being called from, that way if it gets annoying I can easily track down and delete the code responsible for spamming my screen with infoBoxes.

To use this method call:

ClassNameHere.infoBox("YOUR INFORMATION HERE", "TITLE BAR MESSAGE");

javafx.scene.control.Alert

For a an in depth description of how to use JavaFX dialogs see: JavaFX Dialogs (official) by code.makery. They are much more powerful and flexible than Swing dialogs and capable of far more than just popping up messages.

As above I'll post a small example of how you could use JavaFX dialogs to achieve the same result

import javafx.scene.control.Alert;
import javafx.scene.control.Alert.AlertType;
import javafx.application.Platform;

public class ClassNameHere
{

    public static void infoBox(String infoMessage, String titleBar)
    {
        /* By specifying a null headerMessage String, we cause the dialog to
           not have a header */
        infoBox(infoMessage, titleBar, null);
    }

    public static void infoBox(String infoMessage, String titleBar, String headerMessage)
    {
        Alert alert = new Alert(AlertType.INFORMATION);
        alert.setTitle(titleBar);
        alert.setHeaderText(headerMessage);
        alert.setContentText(infoMessage);
        alert.showAndWait();
    }
}

One thing to keep in mind is that JavaFX is a single threaded GUI toolkit, which means this method should be called directly from the JavaFX application thread. If you have another thread doing work, which needs a dialog then see these SO Q&As: JavaFX2: Can I pause a background Task / Service? and Platform.Runlater and Task Javafx.

To use this method call:

ClassNameHere.infoBox("YOUR INFORMATION HERE", "TITLE BAR MESSAGE");

or

ClassNameHere.infoBox("YOUR INFORMATION HERE", "TITLE BAR MESSAGE", "HEADER MESSAGE");

Why is a "GRANT USAGE" created the first time I grant a user privileges?

As you said, in MySQL USAGE is synonymous with "no privileges". From the MySQL Reference Manual:

The USAGE privilege specifier stands for "no privileges." It is used at the global level with GRANT to modify account attributes such as resource limits or SSL characteristics without affecting existing account privileges.

USAGE is a way to tell MySQL that an account exists without conferring any real privileges to that account. They merely have permission to use the MySQL server, hence USAGE. It corresponds to a row in the `mysql`.`user` table with no privileges set.

The IDENTIFIED BY clause indicates that a password is set for that user. How do we know a user is who they say they are? They identify themselves by sending the correct password for their account.

A user's password is one of those global level account attributes that isn't tied to a specific database or table. It also lives in the `mysql`.`user` table. If the user does not have any other privileges ON *.*, they are granted USAGE ON *.* and their password hash is displayed there. This is often a side effect of a CREATE USER statement. When a user is created in that way, they initially have no privileges so they are merely granted USAGE.

Should I use <i> tag for icons instead of <span>?

I also found this to be useful when i wanted to place an icon with absolute positioning inside a link <a> tag.

I thought about the <img> tag first, but default styling of those tags inside links typically have border styling and/or shadow effects. Plus, it feels wrong to use an <img> tag without defining an "src" attribute whereas i'm using a background-image style sheet declaration so that the image doesn't ghost and drag.

At this point you're thinking of tags like <span> or <i> - in which case <i> makes so much sense as this type of icon.

All in all i think its benefit besides being intuitive is that it requires minimal style sheet adjustments to make this tag work as an icon.

How do I keep a label centered in WinForms?

The accepted answer didn't work for me for two reasons:

  1. I had BackColor set so setting AutoSize = false and Dock = Fill causes the background color to fill the whole form
  2. I couldn't have AutoSize set to false anyway because my label text was dynamic

Instead, I simply used the form's width and the width of the label to calculate the left offset:

MyLabel.Left = (this.Width - MyLabel.Width) / 2;

string encoding and decoding?

You can't decode a unicode, and you can't encode a str. Try doing it the other way around.

Download image from the site in .NET/C#

You can use this code

using (WebClient client = new WebClient()) {
                    Stream stream = client.OpenRead(imgUrl);
                    if (stream != null) {
                        Bitmap bitmap = new Bitmap(stream);

What is the meaning of "POSIX"?

This standard provides a common basis for Unix-like operating systems. It specifies how the shell should work, what to expect from commands like ls and grep, and a number of C libraries that C authors can expect to have available.

For example, the pipes that command-line users use to string together commands are specified in detail here, which means C’s popen (pipe open) function is POSIX-standard, not ISO C-standard.

Popup window in PHP?

You'll have to use JS to open the popup, though you can put it on the page conditionally with PHP, you're right that you'll have to use a JavaScript function.

How do I uniquely identify computers visiting my web site?

There is only a small amount of information that you can get via an HTTP connection.

  1. IP - But as others have said, this is not fixed for many, if not most Internet users due to their ISP's dynamic allocation policies.

  2. Useragent String - Nearly all browsers send what kind of browser they are with every request. However, this can be set by the user in many browsers today.

  3. Collection of request fields - There are other fields sent with each request, such as supported encodings, etc. These, if used in the aggregate can help to ID a user's machine, but again are browser dependent and can be changed.

  4. Cookies - Setting a cookie is another way to identify a machine, or more specifically a browser on a machine, but as others have said, these can be deleted, or turned off by the users, and are only applicable on a browser, not a machine.

So, the correct response is that you cannot achieve what you would live via the HTTP over IP protocols alone. However, using a combination of cookies, as well as IP, and the fields in the HTTP request, you have a good chance at guessing, sort of, what machine it is. Users tend to use only one browser, and often from one machine, so this may be fairly relieable, but this will vary depending on the audience...techies are more likely to mess with this stuff, and use more machines/browsers. Additionally, this could even be coupled with some attempt to geo-locate the IP, and use that data as well. But in any case, there is no solution that will be correct all of the time.

How to sum the values of one column of a dataframe in spark/scala

Not sure this was around when this question was asked but:

df.describe().show("columnName")

gives mean, count, stdtev stats on a column. I think it returns on all columns if you just do .show()

Python Requests requests.exceptions.SSLError: [Errno 8] _ssl.c:504: EOF occurred in violation of protocol

Setting verify=False only skips verifying the server certificate, but will not help to resolve SSL protocol errors.

This issue is likely due to SSLv2 being disabled on the web server, but Python 2.x tries to establish a connection with PROTOCOL_SSLv23 by default. This happens at https://github.com/python/cpython/blob/360aa60b2a36f5f6e9e20325efd8d472f7559b1e/Lib/ssl.py#L1057

You can monkey-patch ssl.wrap_socket() in the ssl module by overriding the ssl_version keyword parameter. The following code can be used as-is. Put this at the start of your program before making any requests.

import ssl
from functools import wraps
def sslwrap(func):
    @wraps(func)
    def bar(*args, **kw):
        kw['ssl_version'] = ssl.PROTOCOL_TLSv1
        return func(*args, **kw)
    return bar

ssl.wrap_socket = sslwrap(ssl.wrap_socket)

Writing MemoryStream to Response Object

I had the same issue. try this: copy to MemoryStream -> delete file -> download.

string absolutePath = "~/your path";
try {
    //copy to MemoryStream
    MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream();
    using (FileStream fs = File.OpenRead(Server.MapPath(absolutePath)))
    {
        fs.CopyTo(ms);
    }

    //Delete file
    if(File.Exists(Server.MapPath(absolutePath)))
       File.Delete(Server.MapPath(absolutePath))

    //Download file
    Response.Clear()
    Response.ContentType = "image/jpg";
    Response.AddHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment;filename=\"" + absolutePath + "\"");
    Response.BinaryWrite(ms.ToArray())
}
catch {}

Response.End();

Create zip file and ignore directory structure

Retain the parent directory so unzip doesn't spew files everywhere

When zipping directories, keeping the parent directory in the archive will help to avoid littering your current directory when you later unzip the archive file

So to avoid retaining all paths, and since you can't use -j and -r together ( you'll get an error ), you can do this instead:

cd path/to/parent/dir/;
zip -r ../my.zip ../$(basename $PWD)
cd -;

The ../$(basename $PWD) is the magic that retains the parent directory.

So now unzip my.zip will give a folder containing all your files:

parent-directory
+-- file1
+-- file2
+-- dir1
¦   +-- file3
¦   +-- file4

Instead of littering the current directory with the unzipped files:

file1
file2
dir1
+-- file3
+-- file4

LINQ to SQL Left Outer Join

Not quite - since each "left" row in a left-outer-join will match 0-n "right" rows (in the second table), where-as yours matches only 0-1. To do a left outer join, you need SelectMany and DefaultIfEmpty, for example:

var query = from c in db.Customers
            join o in db.Orders
               on c.CustomerID equals o.CustomerID into sr
            from x in sr.DefaultIfEmpty()
            select new {
               CustomerID = c.CustomerID, ContactName = c.ContactName,
               OrderID = x == null ? -1 : x.OrderID };

(or via the extension methods)

ORA-00054: resource busy and acquire with NOWAIT specified

Saving ssh key fails

On Windows 8.1 using CMDER, I created the ssh key with this file path /c/Users/youruser/.ssh/id_rsa_whatever, the problem was the : that I was using. With this path I didn't create the folder before running the command, there is no need to run mkdir because the command will create the folder automatically.

Call a function after previous function is complete

This depends on what function1 is doing.

If function1 is doing some simple synchrounous javascript, like updating a div value or something, then function2 will fire after function1 has completed.

If function1 is making an asynchronous call, such as an AJAX call, you will need to create a "callback" method (most ajax API's have a callback function parameter). Then call function2 in the callback. eg:

function1()
{
  new AjaxCall(ajaxOptions, MyCallback);
}

function MyCallback(result)
{
  function2(result);
}

How to get status code from webclient?

You can try this code to get HTTP status code from WebException or from OpenReadCompletedEventArgs.Error. It works in Silverlight too because SL does not have WebExceptionStatus.ProtocolError defined.

HttpStatusCode GetHttpStatusCode(System.Exception err)
{
    if (err is WebException)
    {
        WebException we = (WebException)err;
        if (we.Response is HttpWebResponse)
        {
            HttpWebResponse response = (HttpWebResponse)we.Response;
            return response.StatusCode;
        }
    }
    return 0;
}

Wipe data/Factory reset through ADB

After a lot of digging around I finally ended up downloading the source code of the recovery section of Android. Turns out you can actually send commands to the recovery.

 * The arguments which may be supplied in the recovery.command file:
 *   --send_intent=anystring - write the text out to recovery.intent
 * --update_package=path - verify install an OTA package file
 * --wipe_data - erase user data (and cache), then reboot
 * --wipe_cache - wipe cache (but not user data), then reboot
 *   --set_encrypted_filesystem=on|off - enables / diasables encrypted fs

Those are the commands you can use according to the one I found but that might be different for modded files. So using adb you can do this:

adb shell
recovery --wipe_data

Using --wipe_data seemed to do what I was looking for which was handy although I have not fully tested this as of yet.

EDIT:

For anyone still using this topic, these commands may change based on which recovery you are using. If you are using Clockword recovery, these commands should still work. You can find other commands in /cache/recovery/command

For more information please see here: https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_bootable_recovery/blob/cm-10.2/recovery.c

How to split a list by comma not space

You can use:

cat f.csv | sed 's/,/ /g' |  awk '{print $1 " / " $4}'

or

echo "Hello,World,Questions,Answers,bash shell,script" | sed 's/,/ /g' |  awk '{print $1 " / " $4}'

This is the part that replace comma with space

sed 's/,/ /g'

How to change Named Range Scope

I added some additional lines of code to JS20'07'11's previous Makro to make sure that the name of the sheet's Named Ranges isn't already a name of the workbook's Named Ranges. Without these lines the already definied workbook scooped Named range is deleted and replaced.

How to download and save a file from Internet using Java?

1st Method using the new channel

ReadableByteChannel aq = Channels.newChannel(new url("https//asd/abc.txt").openStream());
FileOutputStream fileOS = new FileOutputStream("C:Users/local/abc.txt")
FileChannel writech = fileOS.getChannel();

2nd Method using FileUtils

FileUtils.copyURLToFile(new url("https//asd/abc.txt",new local file on system("C":/Users/system/abc.txt"));

3rd Method using

InputStream xy = new ("https//asd/abc.txt").openStream();

This is how we can download file by using basic java code and other third-party libraries. These are just for quick reference. Please google with the above keywords to get detailed information and other options.

.NET Console Application Exit Event

For the CTRL+C case, you can use this:

// Tell the system console to handle CTRL+C by calling our method that
// gracefully shuts down.
Console.CancelKeyPress += new ConsoleCancelEventHandler(Console_CancelKeyPress);

static void Console_CancelKeyPress(object sender, ConsoleCancelEventArgs e)
{
            Console.WriteLine("Shutting down...");
            // Cleanup here
            System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(750);
}

Command /usr/bin/codesign failed with exit code 1

The solution that worked for me is related to (what I think is) a change of path behavior after upgrading to Xcode 4.2:

You can no longer manually enter "armv6 armv7" but must enter $(VALID_ARCHS) instead: both for the Architectures and Valid Architectures fields under the Architectures section in your project's Build Settings pane. Xcode will automatically replace the statement with 'armv6 armv7'.

This string looks exactly the same as if you would have typed it in manually but nevertheless point to the actual correct paths that will be generated along with your build, ...or at least this is my take on it :P

Unrelated, we used to have "armv6 armv7" as well under Other Signing Flags and now took that out and it works fine. This must be just an extra.

Thanks and happy hacking. Gon

SQL Server IF EXISTS THEN 1 ELSE 2

If you want to do it this way then this is the syntax you're after;

IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM tblGLUserAccess WHERE GLUserName ='xxxxxxxx')
BEGIN
   SELECT 1
END
ELSE
BEGIN
    SELECT 2
END

You don't strictly need the BEGIN..END statements but it's probably best to get into that habit from the beginning.

HTTP Error 503, the service is unavailable

I had the same problem and found it was caused by permission problems creating the user profile in C:\Users. I gave ApplicationPoolIdentity full permissions to the C:\Users folder, started the site and everything worked, the profile must have been created properly, and my site worked as it should. I then removed access to C:\Users from ApplicationPoolIdentity.

Site wont start on local using ApplicationPoolIdentity, only when using NetworkService: "HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable."

Pass array to ajax request in $.ajax()

Just use the JSON.stringify method and pass it through as the "data" parameter for the $.ajax function, like follows:

$.ajax({
    type: "POST",
    url: "index.php",
    dataType: "json",
    data: JSON.stringify({ paramName: info }),
    success: function(msg){
        $('.answer').html(msg);

Android, canvas: How do I clear (delete contents of) a canvas (= bitmaps), living in a surfaceView?

In my case, I draw my canvas into linearlayout. To clean and redraw again:

    LinearLayout linearLayout = findViewById(R.id.myCanvas);
    linearLayout.removeAllViews();

and then, I call the class with the new values:

    Lienzo fondo = new Lienzo(this,items);
    linearLayout.addView(fondo);

This is the class Lienzo:

class Lienzo extends View {
    Paint paint;
    RectF contenedor;
    Path path;
    ArrayList<Items>elementos;

    public Lienzo(Context context,ArrayList<Items> elementos) {
        super(context);
        this.elementos=elementos;
        init();
    }

    private void init() {
        path=new Path();
        paint = new Paint();
        contenedor = new RectF();
        paint.setStyle(Paint.Style.FILL);
    }

    @Override
    protected void onDraw(Canvas canvas) {
        super.onDraw(canvas);

        contenedor.left = oneValue;
        contenedor.top = anotherValue;
        contenedor.right = anotherValue;
        contenedor.bottom = anotherValue;

                canvas.drawArc(contenedor,angulo,(float)(elementos.get(i).value*360)/total,true,paint);

                angulo+=(float)(elementos.get(i).value*360)/total;

}

Are PDO prepared statements sufficient to prevent SQL injection?

No this is not enough (in some specific cases)! By default PDO uses emulated prepared statements when using MySQL as a database driver. You should always disable emulated prepared statements when using MySQL and PDO:

$dbh->setAttribute(PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES, false);

Another thing that always should be done it set the correct encoding of the database:

$dbh = new PDO('mysql:dbname=dbtest;host=127.0.0.1;charset=utf8', 'user', 'pass');

Also see this related question: How can I prevent SQL injection in PHP?

Also note that that only is about the database side of the things you would still have to watch yourself when displaying the data. E.g. by using htmlspecialchars() again with the correct encoding and quoting style.

Setting up an MS-Access DB for multi-user access

The first thing to do (if not already done) is to split your database into a front end (with all the forms/reports etc) and a back end(with all the data). The second thing is to setup version control on the front end.

The way I have done that in a lot of my databases is to have the users run a small “jumper” database to open the main database. This jumper does the following things

• Checks to see if the user has the database on their C drive

• If they do not then install and run

• If they do then check what version they have

• If the version numbers do not match then copy down the latest version

• Open the database

This whole checking process normally takes under half a second. Using this model you can do all your development on a separate database then when you are ready to “release” you just put the new mde up onto the network share and the next time the user opens the jumper the latest version is copied down.

There are also other things to think about in multiuser database and it might be worth checking for the common mistakes such as binding a form to a whole table etc

How can I get onclick event on webview in android?

I have tried almost all the answers and some of them almost worked for me but none of these answers work perfectly. So here is my solution. For this solution, you will need to add onclick attribute in the HTML body tag. So if you can not modify the HTML file then this solution won't work for you.

Step 1: add onclick attribute in the HTML body tag like this:

<body onclick="ok.performClick(this.value);">
    <h1>This is heading 1</h1>
    <p>This is para 1</p>
</body>

Step 2: implement addJavascriptInterface in your app to handle click listener:

webView.addJavascriptInterface(new Object() {
    @JavascriptInterface
    public void performClick(String string) {
        handler.sendEmptyMessageDelayed(CLICK_ON_WEBVIEW, 0);
    }
}, "ok");

Step 3: We can not perform any action on main thread from performClick method so need to add Handler class:

private final Handler handler = new Handler(this); // class-level variable
private static final int CLICK_ON_WEBVIEW = 1; // class-level variable

implement Handler.Callback to your class and the override handleMessage

@Override
public boolean handleMessage(Message message) {
    if (message.what == CLICK_ON_WEBVIEW) {
        Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "WebView clicked", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
        return true;
    }
    return false;
}

Is it possible to change the location of packages for NuGet?

For .NET Core projects and Visual Studio 2017 I was able to restore all packages to relative path by providing this configuration:

<configuration>
  <config>
    <add key="globalPackagesFolder" value="lib" />
  </config>
  ...
</configuration>

Based on my experience the lib folder was created on the same level where Nuget.config was found, no matter where sln file was. I tested and the behavior is same for command line dotnet restore, and Visual Studio 2017 rebuild

How does one generate a random number in Apple's Swift language?

I've been able to just use rand() to get a random CInt. You can make it an Int by using something like this:

let myVar: Int = Int(rand())

You can use your favourite C random function, and just convert to value to Int if needed.

Is it a bad practice to use an if-statement without curly braces?

I am using the code formatter of the IDE I use. That might differ, but it can be setup in the Preferences/Options.

I like this one:

{
    // comment to denote in words the case
    do this;
    // keep this block simple, if more than 10-15 lines needed, I add a function for it
}
else
{
    do this;
}

How to store arrays in MySQL?

In MySQL, use the JSON type.

Contra the answers above, the SQL standard has included array types for almost twenty years; they are useful, even if MySQL has not implemented them.

In your example, however, you'll likely want to create three tables: person and fruit, then person_fruit to join them.

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS person_fruit;
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS person;
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS fruit;

CREATE TABLE person (
  person_id   INT           NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  person_name VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (person_id)
);

CREATE TABLE fruit (
  fruit_id    INT           NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  fruit_name  VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  fruit_color VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  fruit_price INT           NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (fruit_id)
);

CREATE TABLE person_fruit (
  pf_id     INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  pf_person INT NOT NULL,
  pf_fruit  INT NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (pf_id),
  FOREIGN KEY (pf_person) REFERENCES person (person_id),
  FOREIGN KEY (pf_fruit) REFERENCES fruit (fruit_id)
);

INSERT INTO person (person_name)
VALUES
  ('John'),
  ('Mary'),
  ('John'); -- again

INSERT INTO fruit (fruit_name, fruit_color, fruit_price)
VALUES
  ('apple', 'red', 1),
  ('orange', 'orange', 2),
  ('pineapple', 'yellow', 3);

INSERT INTO person_fruit (pf_person, pf_fruit)
VALUES
  (1, 1),
  (1, 2),
  (2, 2),
  (2, 3),
  (3, 1),
  (3, 2),
  (3, 3);

If you wish to associate the person with an array of fruits, you can do so with a view:

DROP VIEW IF EXISTS person_fruit_summary;
CREATE VIEW person_fruit_summary AS
  SELECT
    person_id                                                                                              AS pfs_person_id,
    max(person_name)                                                                                       AS pfs_person_name,
    cast(concat('[', group_concat(json_quote(fruit_name) ORDER BY fruit_name SEPARATOR ','), ']') as json) AS pfs_fruit_name_array
  FROM
    person
    INNER JOIN person_fruit
      ON person.person_id = person_fruit.pf_person
    INNER JOIN fruit
      ON person_fruit.pf_fruit = fruit.fruit_id
  GROUP BY
    person_id;

The view shows the following data:

+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
| pfs_person_id | pfs_person_name | pfs_fruit_name_array             |
+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
|             1 | John            | ["apple", "orange"]              |
|             2 | Mary            | ["orange", "pineapple"]          |
|             3 | John            | ["apple", "orange", "pineapple"] |
+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+

Stacked Tabs in Bootstrap 3

The Bootstrap team seems to have removed it. See here: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/issues/8922 . @Skelly's answer involves custom css which I didn't want to do so I used the grid system and nav-pills. It worked fine and looked great. The code looks like so:

<div class="row">

  <!-- Navigation Buttons -->
  <div class="col-md-3">
    <ul class="nav nav-pills nav-stacked" id="myTabs">
      <li class="active"><a href="#home" data-toggle="pill">Home</a></li>
      <li><a href="#profile" data-toggle="pill">Profile</a></li>
      <li><a href="#messages" data-toggle="pill">Messages</a></li>
    </ul>
  </div>

  <!-- Content -->
  <div class="col-md-9">
    <div class="tab-content">
      <div class="tab-pane active" id="home">Home</div>
      <div class="tab-pane" id="profile">Profile</div>
      <div class="tab-pane" id="messages">Messages</div>
    </div>
  </div>

</div>

You can see this in action here: http://bootply.com/81948

[Update] @SeanK gives the option of not having to enable the nav-pills through Javascript and instead using data-toggle="pill". Check it out here: http://bootply.com/96067. Thanks Sean.

Can't draw Histogram, 'x' must be numeric

Note that you could as well plot directly from ce (after the comma removing) using the column name :

hist(ce$Weight)

(As opposed to using hist(ce[1]), which would lead to the same "must be numeric" error.)

This also works for a database query result.

Possible to restore a backup of SQL Server 2014 on SQL Server 2012?

You CANNOT do this - you cannot attach/detach or backup/restore a database from a newer version of SQL Server down to an older version - the internal file structures are just too different to support backwards compatibility. This is still true in SQL Server 2014 - you cannot restore a 2014 backup on anything other than another 2014 box (or something newer).

You can either get around this problem by

  • using the same version of SQL Server on all your machines - then you can easily backup/restore databases between instances

  • otherwise you can create the database scripts for both structure (tables, view, stored procedures etc.) and for contents (the actual data contained in the tables) either in SQL Server Management Studio (Tasks > Generate Scripts) or using a third-party tool

  • or you can use a third-party tool like Red-Gate's SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare to do "diffing" between your source and target, generate update scripts from those differences, and then execute those scripts on the target platform; this works across different SQL Server versions.

The compatibility mode setting just controls what T-SQL features are available to you - which can help to prevent accidentally using new features not available in other servers. But it does NOT change the internal file format for the .mdf files - this is NOT a solution for that particular problem - there is no solution for restoring a backup from a newer version of SQL Server on an older instance.

How to multi-line "Replace in files..." in Notepad++

The workaround is

  1. search and replace \r\n to thisismynewlineword

  1. now perform your replacements

  2. search and replace thisismynewlineword to \r\n

(to undo the step 1)

How to send SMS in Java

TextMarks gives you access to its shared shortcode to send and receive text messages from your app via their API. Messages come from/to 41411 (instead of e.g. a random phone# and unlike e-mail gateways you have the full 160 chars to work with).

You can also tell people to text in your keyword(s) to 41411 to invoke various functionality in your app. There is a JAVA API client along with several other popular languages and very comprehensive documentation and technical support.

The 14 day free trial can be easily extended for developers who are still testing it out and building their apps.

Python truncate a long string

If you are using Python 3.4+, you can use textwrap.shorten from the standard library:

Collapse and truncate the given text to fit in the given width.

First the whitespace in text is collapsed (all whitespace is replaced by single spaces). If the result fits in the width, it is returned. Otherwise, enough words are dropped from the end so that the remaining words plus the placeholder fit within width:

>>> textwrap.shorten("Hello  world!", width=12)
'Hello world!'
>>> textwrap.shorten("Hello  world!", width=11)
'Hello [...]'
>>> textwrap.shorten("Hello world", width=10, placeholder="...")
'Hello...'

How many socket connections can a web server handle?

This question is a fairly difficult one. There is no real software limitation on the number of active connections a machine can have, though some OS's are more limited than others. The problem becomes one of resources. For example, let's say a single machine wants to support 64,000 simultaneous connections. If the server uses 1MB of RAM per connection, it would need 64GB of RAM. If each client needs to read a file, the disk or storage array access load becomes much larger than those devices can handle. If a server needs to fork one process per connection then the OS will spend the majority of its time context switching or starving processes for CPU time.

The C10K problem page has a very good discussion of this issue.

Why am I getting error for apple-touch-icon-precomposed.png

An alternative solution is to simply add a route to your routes.rb

It basically catches the Apple request and renders a 404 back to the client. This way your log files aren't cluttered.

# routes.rb at the near-end
match '/:png', via: :get, controller: 'application', action: 'apple_touch_not_found', png: /apple-touch-icon.*\.png/

then add a method 'apple_touch_not_found' to your application_controller.rb

# application_controller.rb
def apple_touch_not_found
  render plain: 'apple-touch icons not found', status: 404
end

How to delete a file or folder?

To avoid the TOCTOU issue highlighted by Éric Araujo's comment, you can catch an exception to call the correct method:

def remove_file_or_dir(path: str) -> None:
    """ Remove a file or directory """
    try:
        shutil.rmtree(path)
    except NotADirectoryError:

Since shutil.rmtree() will only remove directories and os.remove() or os.unlink() will only remove files.

How to set page content to the middle of screen?

I'm guessing you want to center the box both vertically and horizontally, regardless of browser window size. Since you have a fixed width and height for the box, this should work:

Markup:

<div></div>

CSS:

div {
    height: 200px;
    width: 400px;
    background: black;

    position: fixed;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    margin-top: -100px;
    margin-left: -200px;
}

The div should remain in the center of the screen even if you resize the browser. Just replace the margin-top and margin-left with half of the height and width of your table.

Edit: Credit goes to CSS-Tricks, where I got the original idea.

Iterating through directories with Python

From python >= 3.5 onward, you can use **, glob.iglob(path/**, recursive=True) and it seems the most pythonic solution, i.e.:

import glob, os

for filename in glob.iglob('/pardadox-music/**', recursive=True):
    if os.path.isfile(filename): # filter dirs
        print(filename)

Output:

/pardadox-music/modules/her1.mod
/pardadox-music/modules/her2.mod
...

Notes:
1 - glob.iglob

glob.iglob(pathname, recursive=False)

Return an iterator which yields the same values as glob() without actually storing them all simultaneously.

2 - If recursive is True, the pattern '**' will match any files and zero or more directories and subdirectories.

3 - If the directory contains files starting with . they won’t be matched by default. For example, consider a directory containing card.gif and .card.gif:

>>> import glob
>>> glob.glob('*.gif') ['card.gif']
>>> glob.glob('.c*')['.card.gif']

4 - You can also use rglob(pattern), which is the same as calling glob() with **/ added in front of the given relative pattern.

Output array to CSV in Ruby

If you have an array of arrays of data:

rows = [["a1", "a2", "a3"],["b1", "b2", "b3", "b4"], ["c1", "c2", "c3"]]

Then you can write this to a file with the following, which I think is much simpler:

require "csv"
File.write("ss.csv", rows.map(&:to_csv).join)

...you're trying to open a directory as a file, which may (and on most non UNIX file systems will) fail.

Your other example though;

a_file = open('E:\Python Win7-64-AMD 3.3\Test\a.txt', encoding='utf-8')

should work well if you just have the permission on a.txt. You may want to use a raw (r-prefixed) string though, to make sure your path does not contain any escape characters like \n that will be translated to special characters.

a_file = open(r'E:\Python Win7-64-AMD 3.3\Test\a.txt', encoding='utf-8')

Determine whether an array contains a value

Wow, there are a lot of great answers to this question.

I didn't see one that takes a reduce approach so I'll add it in:

var searchForValue = 'pig';

var valueIsInArray = ['horse', 'cat', 'dog'].reduce(function(previous, current){
    return previous || searchForValue === current ? true : false;
}, false);

console.log('The value "' + searchForValue + '" is in the array: ' + valueIsInArray);

Here's a fiddle of it in action.

What does cv::normalize(_src, dst, 0, 255, NORM_MINMAX, CV_8UC1);

When the normType is NORM_MINMAX, cv::normalize normalizes _src in such a way that the min value of dst is alpha and max value of dst is beta. cv::normalize does its magic using only scales and shifts (i.e. adding constants and multiplying by constants).

CV_8UC1 says how many channels dst has.

The documentation here is pretty clear: http://docs.opencv.org/modules/core/doc/operations_on_arrays.html#normalize

How to quickly clear a JavaScript Object?

You can delete the props, but don't delete variables. delete abc; is invalid in ES5 (and throws with use strict).

You can assign it to null to set it for deletion to the GC (it won't if you have other references to properties)

Setting length property on an object does not change anything. (it only, well, sets the property)

Java: Find .txt files in specified folder

import org.apache.commons.io.filefilter.WildcardFileFilter;

.........
.........

File dir = new File(fileDir);
FileFilter fileFilter = new WildcardFileFilter("*.txt");
File[] files = dir.listFiles(fileFilter);

The code above works great for me

Recursive Fibonacci

I think this solution is short and seem looks nice:

long long fib(int n){
  return n<=2?1:fib(n-1)+fib(n-2);
}

Edit : as jweyrich mentioned, true recursive function should be:

long long fib(int n){
      return n<2?n:fib(n-1)+fib(n-2);
    }

(because fib(0) = 0. but base on above recursive formula, fib(0) will be 1)

To understand recursion algorithm, you should draw to your paper, and the most important thing is : "Think normal as often".

How/When does Execute Shell mark a build as failure in Jenkins?

First things first, hover the mouse over the grey area below. Not part of the answer, but absolutely has to be said:

If you have a shell script that does "checkout, build, deploy" all by itself, then why are you using Jenkins? You are foregoing all the features of Jenkins that make it what it is. You might as well have a cron or an SVN post-commit hook call the script directly. Jenkins performing the SVN checkout itself is crucial. It allows the builds to be triggered only when there are changes (or on timer, or manual, if you prefer). It keeps track of changes between builds. It shows those changes, so you can see which build was for which set of changes. It emails committers when their changes caused successful or failed build (again, as configured as you prefer). It will email committers when their fixes fixed the failing build. And more and more. Jenkins archiving the artifacts also makes them available, per build, straight off Jenkins. While not as crucial as the SVN checkout, this is once again an integral part of what makes it Jenkins. Same with deploying. Unless you have a single environment, deployment usually happens to multiple environments. Jenkins can keep track of which environment a specific build (with specific set of SVN changes) is deployed it, through the use of Promotions. You are foregoing all of this. It sounds like you are told "you have to use Jenkins" but you don't really want to, and you are doing it just to get your bosses off your back, just to put a checkmark "yes, I've used Jenkins"

The short answer is: the exit code of last command of the Jenkin's Execute Shell build step is what determines the success/failure of the Build Step. 0 - success, anything else - failure. Note, this is determining the success/failure of the build step, not the whole job run. The success/failure of the whole job run can further be affected by multiple build steps, and post-build actions and plugins.

You've mentioned Build step 'Execute shell' marked build as failure, so we will focus just on a single build step. If your Execute shell build step only has a single line that calls your shell script, then the exit code of your shell script will determine the success/failure of the build step. If you have more lines, after your shell script execution, then carefully review them, as they are the ones that could be causing failure.

Finally, have a read here Jenkins Build Script exits after Google Test execution. It is not directly related to your question, but note that part about Jenkins launching the Execute Shell build step, as a shell script with /bin/sh -xe

The -e means that the shell script will exit with failure, even if just 1 command fails, even if you do error checking for that command (because the script exits before it gets to your error checking). This is contrary to normal execution of shell scripts, which usually print the error message for the failed command (or redirect it to null and handle it by other means), and continue.

To circumvent this, add set +e to the top of your shell script.

Since you say your script does all it is supposed to do, chances are the failing command is somewhere at the end of the script. Maybe a final echo? Or copy of artifacts somewhere? Without seeing the full console output, we are just guessing.

Please post the job run's console output, and preferably the shell script itself too, and then we could tell you exactly which line is failing.

Delete files older than 10 days using shell script in Unix

Just spicing up the shell script above to delete older files but with logging and calculation of elapsed time

#!/bin/bash

path="/data/backuplog/"
timestamp=$(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S)
filename=log_$timestamp.txt
log=$path$filename
days=7

START_TIME=$(date +%s)

find $path -maxdepth 1 -name "*.txt"  -type f -mtime +$days  -print -delete >> $log

echo "Backup:: Script Start -- $(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M)" >> $log

... code for backup ...or any other operation .... >> $log

END_TIME=$(date +%s)

ELAPSED_TIME=$(( $END_TIME - $START_TIME ))

echo "Backup :: Script End -- $(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M)" >> $log
echo "Elapsed Time ::  $(date -d 00:00:$ELAPSED_TIME +%Hh:%Mm:%Ss) "  >> $log

The code adds a few things.

  • log files named with a timestamp
  • log folder specified
  • find looks for *.txt files only in the log folder
  • type f ensures you only deletes files
  • maxdepth 1 ensures you dont enter subfolders
  • log files older than 7 days are deleted ( assuming this is for a backup log)
  • notes the start / end time
  • calculates the elapsed time for the backup operation...

Note: to test the code, just use -print instead of -print -delete. But do check your path carefully though.

Note: Do ensure your server time is set correctly via date - setup timezone/ntp correctly . Additionally check file times with 'stat filename'

Note: mtime can be replaced with mmin for better control as mtime discards all fractions (older than 2 days (+2 days) actually means 3 days ) when it deals with getting the timestamps of files in the context of days

-mtime +$days  --->  -mmin  +$((60*24*$days))

Try removing your other included scripts and see if it fixes the issue. In my case, after hours of needlessly searching my one code, I removed scripts in a binary search pattern and discovered the offending script right away.

@Scope("prototype") bean scope not creating new bean

Since Spring 2.5 there's a very easy (and elegant) way to achieve that.

You can just change the params proxyMode and value of the @Scope annotation.

With this trick you can avoid to write extra code or to inject the ApplicationContext every time that you need a prototype inside a singleton bean.

Example:

@Service
@Scope(value="prototype", proxyMode=ScopedProxyMode.TARGET_CLASS)
public class LoginAction {}

With the config above LoginAction (inside HomeController) is always a prototype even though the controller is a singleton.

Quick Way to Implement Dictionary in C

here is a quick implement, i used it to get a 'Matrix'(sruct) from a string. you can have a bigger array and change its values on the run also:

typedef struct  { int** lines; int isDefined; }mat;
mat matA, matB, matC, matD, matE, matF;

/* an auxilary struct to be used in a dictionary */
typedef struct  { char* str; mat *matrix; }stringToMat;

/* creating a 'dictionary' for a mat name to its mat. lower case only! */
stringToMat matCases [] =
{
    { "mat_a", &matA },
    { "mat_b", &matB },
    { "mat_c", &matC },
    { "mat_d", &matD },
    { "mat_e", &matE },
    { "mat_f", &matF },
};

mat* getMat(char * str)
{
    stringToMat* pCase;
    mat * selected = NULL;
    if (str != NULL)
    {
        /* runing on the dictionary to get the mat selected */
        for(pCase = matCases; pCase != matCases + sizeof(matCases) / sizeof(matCases[0]); pCase++ )
        {
            if(!strcmp( pCase->str, str))
                selected = (pCase->matrix);
        }
        if (selected == NULL)
            printf("%s is not a valid matrix name\n", str);
    }
    else
        printf("expected matrix name, got NULL\n");
    return selected;
}

how to convert string to numerical values in mongodb

You can easily convert the string data type to numerical data type.

Don't forget to change collectionName & FieldName. for ex : CollectionNmae : Users & FieldName : Contactno.

Try this query..

db.collectionName.find().forEach( function (x) {
x.FieldName = parseInt(x.FieldName);
db.collectionName.save(x);

Get selected key/value of a combo box using jQuery

I assume by "key" and "value" you mean:

<select>
    <option value="KEY">VALUE</option>
</select>

If that's the case, this will get you the "VALUE":

$(this).find('option:selected').text();

And you can get the "KEY" like this:

$(this).find('option:selected').val();

How to detect if JavaScript is disabled?

just a bit tough but (hairbo gave me the idea)

CSS:

.pagecontainer {
  display: none;
}

JS:

function load() {
  document.getElementById('noscriptmsg').style.display = "none";
  document.getElementById('load').style.display = "block";
  /* rest of js*/
}

HTML:

<body onload="load();">

  <div class="pagecontainer" id="load">
    Page loading....
  </div>
  <div id="noscriptmsg">
    You don't have javascript enabled. Good luck with that.
  </div>

</body>

would work in any case right? even if the noscript tag is unsupported (only some css required) any one knows a non css solution?
