Programs & Examples On #Throttling

Throttling is a mechanism to regulate the rate at which processing is performed

Simulate delayed and dropped packets on Linux

One of the most used tool in the scientific community to that purpose is DummyNet. Once you have installed the ipfw kernel module, in order to introduce 50ms propagation delay between 2 machines simply run these commands:

./ipfw pipe 1 config delay 50ms
./ipfw add 1000 pipe 1 ip from $IP_MACHINE_1 to $IP_MACHINE_2

In order to also introduce 50% of packet losses you have to run:

./ipfw pipe 1 config plr 0.5

Here more details.

Creating a .p12 file

The openssl documentation says that file supplied as the -in argument must be in PEM format.

Turns out that, contrary to the CA's manual, the certificate returned by the CA which I stored in myCert.cer is not PEM format rather it is PKCS7.

In order to create my .p12, I had to first convert the certificate to PEM:

openssl pkcs7 -in myCert.cer -print_certs -out certs.pem

and then execute

openssl pkcs12 -export -out keyStore.p12 -inkey myKey.pem -in certs.pem

How to check if element in groovy array/hash/collection/list?

.contains() is the best method for lists, but for maps you will need to use .containsKey() or .containsValue()

[a:1,b:2,c:3].containsValue(3)
[a:1,b:2,c:3].containsKey('a')

SQL Server Error : String or binary data would be truncated

this type of error generally occurs when you have to put characters or values more than that you have specified in Database table like in this case: you specify transaction_status varchar(10) but you actually trying to store
_transaction_status which contain 19 characters. that's why you faced this type of error in this code..

Toggle input disabled attribute using jQuery

This is fairly simple with the callback syntax of attr:

$("#product1 :checkbox").click(function(){
  $(this)
   .closest('tr') // find the parent row
       .find(":input[type='text']") // find text elements in that row
           .attr('disabled',function(idx, oldAttr) {
               return !oldAttr; // invert disabled value
           })
           .toggleClass('disabled') // enable them
       .end() // go back to the row
       .siblings() // get its siblings
           .find(":input[type='text']") // find text elements in those rows
               .attr('disabled',function(idx, oldAttr) {
                   return !oldAttr; // invert disabled value
               })
               .removeClass('disabled'); // disable them
});

Mocking a method to throw an exception (moq), but otherwise act like the mocked object?

Here's how you can mock your FileConnection

Mock<IFileConnection> fileConnection = new Mock<IFileConnection>(
                                                           MockBehavior.Strict);
fileConnection.Setup(item => item.Get(It.IsAny<string>,It.IsAny<string>))
              .Throws(new IOException());

Then instantiate your Transfer class and use the mock in your method call

Transfer transfer = new Transfer();
transfer.GetFile(fileConnection.Object, someRemoteFilename, someLocalFileName);

Update:

First of all you have to mock your dependencies only, not the class you are testing(Transfer class in this case). Stating those dependencies in your constructor make it easy to see what services your class needs to work. It also makes it possible to replace them with fakes when you are writing your unit tests. At the moment it's impossible to replace those properties with fakes.

Since you are setting those properties using another dependency, I would write it like this:

public class Transfer
{
    public Transfer(IInternalConfig internalConfig)
    {
        source = internalConfig.GetFileConnection("source");
        destination = internalConfig.GetFileConnection("destination");
    }

    //you should consider making these private or protected fields
    public virtual IFileConnection source { get; set; }
    public virtual IFileConnection destination { get; set; }

    public virtual void GetFile(IFileConnection connection,
        string remoteFilename, string localFilename)
    {
        connection.Get(remoteFilename, localFilename);
    }

    public virtual void PutFile(IFileConnection connection,
        string localFilename, string remoteFilename)
    {
        connection.Get(remoteFilename, localFilename);
    }

    public virtual void TransferFiles(string sourceName, string destName)
    {
        var tempName = Path.GetTempFileName();
        GetFile(source, sourceName, tempName);
        PutFile(destination, tempName, destName);
    }
}

This way you can mock internalConfig and make it return IFileConnection mocks that does what you want.

Nesting CSS classes

Not with pure CSS. The closest equivalent is this:

.class1, .class2 {
    some stuff
}

.class2 {
    some more stuff
}

Remove specific rows from a data frame

 X <- data.frame(Variable1=c(11,14,12,15),Variable2=c(2,3,1,4))
> X
  Variable1 Variable2
1        11         2
2        14         3
3        12         1
4        15         4
> X[X$Variable1!=11 & X$Variable1!=12, ]
  Variable1 Variable2
2        14         3
4        15         4
> X[ ! X$Variable1 %in% c(11,12), ]
  Variable1 Variable2
2        14         3
4        15         4

You can functionalize this however you like.

Reading an integer from user input

You could just go ahead and try :

    Console.WriteLine("1. Add account.");
    Console.WriteLine("Enter choice: ");
    int choice=int.Parse(Console.ReadLine());

That should work for the case statement.

It works with the switch statement and doesn't throw an exception.

How to reset or change the passphrase for a GitHub SSH key?

You can change the passphrase for your private key by doing:

ssh-keygen -f ~/.ssh/id_rsa -p

What does "xmlns" in XML mean?

xmlns - xml namespace. It's just a method to avoid element name conflicts. For example:

<config xmlns:rnc="URI1" xmlns:bsc="URI2">
  <rnc:node>
      <rnc:rncId>5</rnc:rncId>
  </rnc:node>

  <bsc:node>
      <bsc:cId>5</bsc:cId>
  </bsc:node>
</config>

Two different node elements in one xml file. Without namespaces this file would not be valid.

What is the difference between screenX/Y, clientX/Y and pageX/Y?

In JavaScript:

pageX, pageY, screenX, screenY, clientX, and clientY returns a number which indicates the number of physical “CSS pixels” a point is from the reference point. The event point is where the user clicked, the reference point is a point in the upper left. These properties return the horizontal and vertical distance from that reference point.

pageX and pageY:
Relative to the top left of the fully rendered content area in the browser. This reference point is below the URL bar and back button in the upper left. This point could be anywhere in the browser window and can actually change location if there are embedded scrollable pages embedded within pages and the user moves a scrollbar.

screenX and screenY:
Relative to the top left of the physical screen/monitor, this reference point only moves if you increase or decrease the number of monitors or the monitor resolution.

clientX and clientY:
Relative to the upper left edge of the content area (the viewport) of the browser window. This point does not move even if the user moves a scrollbar from within the browser.

When is it acceptable to call GC.Collect?

You can call GC.Collect() when you know something about the nature of the app the garbage collector doesn't. It's tempting to think that, as the author, this is very likely. However, the truth is the GC amounts to a pretty well-written and tested expert system, and it's rare you'll know something about the low level code paths it doesn't.

The best example I can think of where you might have some extra information is a app that cycles between idle periods and very busy periods. You want the best performance possible for the busy periods and therefore want to use the idle time to do some clean up.

However, most of the time the GC is smart enough to do this anyway.

How can you test if an object has a specific property?

For me MyProperty" -in $MyObject.PSobject.Properties.Name didn't work, however

$MyObject.PSobject.Properties.Name.Contains("MyProperty")

works

Is quitting an application frowned upon?

There is a (relatively) simple design which will allow you to get around the "exit" conundrum. Make your app have a "base" state (activity) which is just a blank screen. On the first onCreate of the activity, you can launch another activity that your app's main functionality is in. The "exit" can then be accomplished by finish()ing this second activity and going back to the base of just a blank screen. The OS can keep this blank screen in memory for as long as it wants...

In essence, because you cannot exit out to OS, you simply transform into a self-created nothingness.

.NET NewtonSoft JSON deserialize map to a different property name

If you'd like to use dynamic mapping, and don't want to clutter up your model with attributes, this approach worked for me

Usage:

var settings = new JsonSerializerSettings();
settings.DateFormatString = "YYYY-MM-DD";
settings.ContractResolver = new CustomContractResolver();
this.DataContext = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<CountResponse>(jsonString, settings);

Logic:

public class CustomContractResolver : DefaultContractResolver
{
    private Dictionary<string, string> PropertyMappings { get; set; }

    public CustomContractResolver()
    {
        this.PropertyMappings = new Dictionary<string, string>
        {
            {"Meta", "meta"},
            {"LastUpdated", "last_updated"},
            {"Disclaimer", "disclaimer"},
            {"License", "license"},
            {"CountResults", "results"},
            {"Term", "term"},
            {"Count", "count"},
        };
    }

    protected override string ResolvePropertyName(string propertyName)
    {
        string resolvedName = null;
        var resolved = this.PropertyMappings.TryGetValue(propertyName, out resolvedName);
        return (resolved) ? resolvedName : base.ResolvePropertyName(propertyName);
    }
}

Parsing JSON objects for HTML table

Make a HTML Table from a JSON array of Objects by extending $ as shown below

$.makeTable = function (mydata) {
            var table = $('<table border=1>');
            var tblHeader = "<tr>";
            for (var k in mydata[0]) tblHeader += "<th>" + k + "</th>";
            tblHeader += "</tr>";
            $(tblHeader).appendTo(table);
            $.each(mydata, function (index, value) {
                var TableRow = "<tr>";
                $.each(value, function (key, val) {
                    TableRow += "<td>" + val + "</td>";
                });
                TableRow += "</tr>";
                $(table).append(TableRow);
            });
            return ($(table));
        };

and use as follows:

var mydata = eval(jdata);
var table = $.makeTable(mydata);
$(table).appendTo("#TableCont");

where TableCont is some div

what is the use of Eval() in asp.net

While binding a databound control, you can evaluate a field of the row in your data source with eval() function.

For example you can add a column to your gridview like that :

<asp:BoundField DataField="YourFieldName" />

And alternatively, this is the way with eval :

<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
        <asp:Label ID="lbl" runat="server" Text='<%# Eval("YourFieldName") %>'>
        </asp:Label>
</ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>

It seems a little bit complex, but it's flexible, because you can set any property of the control with the eval() function :

<asp:TemplateField>
    <ItemTemplate>
        <asp:HyperLink ID="HyperLink1" runat="server"
          NavigateUrl='<%# "ShowDetails.aspx?id="+Eval("Id") %>'
          Text='<%# Eval("Text", "{0}") %>'></asp:HyperLink>
    </ItemTemplate>
</asp:TemplateField>

String.Format not work in TypeScript

FIDDLE: https://jsfiddle.net/1ytxfcwx/

NPM: https://www.npmjs.com/package/typescript-string-operations

GITHUB: https://github.com/sevensc/typescript-string-operations

I implemented a class for String. Its not perfect but it works for me.

use it i.e. like this:

var getFullName = function(salutation, lastname, firstname) {
    return String.Format('{0} {1:U} {2:L}', salutation, lastname, firstname)
}

export class String {
    public static Empty: string = "";

    public static isNullOrWhiteSpace(value: string): boolean {
        try {
            if (value == null || value == 'undefined')
                return false;

            return value.replace(/\s/g, '').length < 1;
        }
        catch (e) {
            return false;
        }
    }

    public static Format(value, ...args): string {
        try {
            return value.replace(/{(\d+(:.*)?)}/g, function (match, i) {
                var s = match.split(':');
                if (s.length > 1) {
                    i = i[0];
                    match = s[1].replace('}', '');
                }

                var arg = String.formatPattern(match, args[i]);
                return typeof arg != 'undefined' && arg != null ? arg : String.Empty;
            });
        }
        catch (e) {
            return String.Empty;
        }
    }

    private static formatPattern(match, arg): string {
        switch (match) {
            case 'L':
                arg = arg.toLowerCase();
                break;
            case 'U':
                arg = arg.toUpperCase();
                break;
            default:
                break;
        }

        return arg;
    }
}

EDIT:

I extended the class and created a repository on github. It would be great if you can help to improve it!

PHP removing a character in a string

    $url = substr($url, 0, $splitPos) . "?" . substr($url, $splitPos + 2);
}

Pandas df.to_csv("file.csv" encode="utf-8") still gives trash characters for minus sign

Your "bad" output is UTF-8 displayed as CP1252.

On Windows, many editors assume the default ANSI encoding (CP1252 on US Windows) instead of UTF-8 if there is no byte order mark (BOM) character at the start of the file. While a BOM is meaningless to the UTF-8 encoding, its UTF-8-encoded presence serves as a signature for some programs. For example, Microsoft Office's Excel requires it even on non-Windows OSes. Try:

df.to_csv('file.csv',encoding='utf-8-sig')

That encoder will add the BOM.

Read and Write CSV files including unicode with Python 2.7

I had the very same issue. The answer is that you are doing it right already. It is the problem of MS Excel. Try opening the file with another editor and you will notice that your encoding was successful already. To make MS Excel happy, move from UTF-8 to UTF-16. This should work:

class UnicodeWriter:
def __init__(self, f, dialect=csv.excel_tab, encoding="utf-16", **kwds):
    # Redirect output to a queue
    self.queue = StringIO.StringIO()
    self.writer = csv.writer(self.queue, dialect=dialect, **kwds)
    self.stream = f

    # Force BOM
    if encoding=="utf-16":
        import codecs
        f.write(codecs.BOM_UTF16)

    self.encoding = encoding

def writerow(self, row):
    # Modified from original: now using unicode(s) to deal with e.g. ints
    self.writer.writerow([unicode(s).encode("utf-8") for s in row])
    # Fetch UTF-8 output from the queue ...
    data = self.queue.getvalue()
    data = data.decode("utf-8")
    # ... and reencode it into the target encoding
    data = data.encode(self.encoding)

    # strip BOM
    if self.encoding == "utf-16":
        data = data[2:]

    # write to the target stream
    self.stream.write(data)
    # empty queue
    self.queue.truncate(0)

def writerows(self, rows):
    for row in rows:
        self.writerow(row)

Why there is this "clear" class before footer?

A class in HTML means that in order to set attributes to it in CSS, you simply need to add a period in front of it.
For example, the CSS code of that html code may be:

.clear {     height: 50px;     width: 25px; }

Also, if you, as suggested by abiessu, are attempting to add the CSS clear: both; attribute to the div to prevent anything from floating to the left or right of this div, you can use this CSS code:

.clear {     clear: both; }

How to check java bit version on Linux?

Server configuration is missing in Eclipse

I faced the same problem once. THe reason for this is that even though the server is available, the config files are missing. You can see the server at Windows -> Show view -> Servers. Their configuration files can be seen at Project Explorer -> Servers. For some reason this second mentioned config files were missing.

I simply deleted the existing server and created a new one with this the config files were also created and the problem was solved!

Similar solution is given at here by Emertana EM java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/juli/logging/LogFactory

How to convert a Django QuerySet to a list

It is a little hard to follow what you are really trying to do. Your first statement looks like you may be fetching the same exact QuerySet of Answer objects twice. First via answer_set.answers.all() and then again via .filter(id__in=...). Double check in the shell and see if this will give you the list of answers you are looking for:

answers = answer_set.answers.all()

Once you have that cleaned up so it is a little easier for you (and others working on the code) to read you might want to look into .exclude() and the __in field lookup.

existing_question_answers = QuestionAnswer.objects.filter(...)

new_answers = answers.exclude(question_answer__in=existing_question_answers)

The above lookup might not sync up with your model definitions but it will probably get you close enough to finish the job yourself.

If you still need to get a list of id values then you want to play with .values_list(). In your case you will probably want to add the optional flat=True.

answers.values_list('id', flat=True)

Difference between DTO, VO, POJO, JavaBeans?

JavaBeans

A JavaBean is a class that follows the JavaBeans conventions as defined by Sun. Wikipedia has a pretty good summary of what JavaBeans are:

JavaBeans are reusable software components for Java that can be manipulated visually in a builder tool. Practically, they are classes written in the Java programming language conforming to a particular convention. They are used to encapsulate many objects into a single object (the bean), so that they can be passed around as a single bean object instead of as multiple individual objects. A JavaBean is a Java Object that is serializable, has a nullary constructor, and allows access to properties using getter and setter methods.

In order to function as a JavaBean class, an object class must obey certain conventions about method naming, construction, and behavior. These conventions make it possible to have tools that can use, reuse, replace, and connect JavaBeans.

The required conventions are:

  • The class must have a public default constructor. This allows easy instantiation within editing and activation frameworks.
  • The class properties must be accessible using get, set, and other methods (so-called accessor methods and mutator methods), following a standard naming convention. This allows easy automated inspection and updating of bean state within frameworks, many of which include custom editors for various types of properties.
  • The class should be serializable. This allows applications and frameworks to reliably save, store, and restore the bean's state in a fashion that is independent of the VM and platform.

Because these requirements are largely expressed as conventions rather than by implementing interfaces, some developers view JavaBeans as Plain Old Java Objects that follow specific naming conventions.

POJO

A Plain Old Java Object or POJO is a term initially introduced to designate a simple lightweight Java object, not implementing any javax.ejb interface, as opposed to heavyweight EJB 2.x (especially Entity Beans, Stateless Session Beans are not that bad IMO). Today, the term is used for any simple object with no extra stuff. Again, Wikipedia does a good job at defining POJO:

POJO is an acronym for Plain Old Java Object. The name is used to emphasize that the object in question is an ordinary Java Object, not a special object, and in particular not an Enterprise JavaBean (especially before EJB 3). The term was coined by Martin Fowler, Rebecca Parsons and Josh MacKenzie in September 2000:

"We wondered why people were so against using regular objects in their systems and concluded that it was because simple objects lacked a fancy name. So we gave them one, and it's caught on very nicely."

The term continues the pattern of older terms for technologies that do not use fancy new features, such as POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) in telephony, and PODS (Plain Old Data Structures) that are defined in C++ but use only C language features, and POD (Plain Old Documentation) in Perl.

The term has most likely gained widespread acceptance because of the need for a common and easily understood term that contrasts with complicated object frameworks. A JavaBean is a POJO that is serializable, has a no-argument constructor, and allows access to properties using getter and setter methods. An Enterprise JavaBean is not a single class but an entire component model (again, EJB 3 reduces the complexity of Enterprise JavaBeans).

As designs using POJOs have become more commonly-used, systems have arisen that give POJOs some of the functionality used in frameworks and more choice about which areas of functionality are actually needed. Hibernate and Spring are examples.

Value Object

A Value Object or VO is an object such as java.lang.Integer that hold values (hence value objects). For a more formal definition, I often refer to Martin Fowler's description of Value Object:

In Patterns of Enterprise Application Architecture I described Value Object as a small object such as a Money or date range object. Their key property is that they follow value semantics rather than reference semantics.

You can usually tell them because their notion of equality isn't based on identity, instead two value objects are equal if all their fields are equal. Although all fields are equal, you don't need to compare all fields if a subset is unique - for example currency codes for currency objects are enough to test equality.

A general heuristic is that value objects should be entirely immutable. If you want to change a value object you should replace the object with a new one and not be allowed to update the values of the value object itself - updatable value objects lead to aliasing problems.

Early J2EE literature used the term value object to describe a different notion, what I call a Data Transfer Object. They have since changed their usage and use the term Transfer Object instead.

You can find some more good material on value objects on the wiki and by Dirk Riehle.

Data Transfer Object

Data Transfer Object or DTO is a (anti) pattern introduced with EJB. Instead of performing many remote calls on EJBs, the idea was to encapsulate data in a value object that could be transfered over the network: a Data Transfer Object. Wikipedia has a decent definition of Data Transfer Object:

Data transfer object (DTO), formerly known as value objects or VO, is a design pattern used to transfer data between software application subsystems. DTOs are often used in conjunction with data access objects to retrieve data from a database.

The difference between data transfer objects and business objects or data access objects is that a DTO does not have any behaviour except for storage and retrieval of its own data (accessors and mutators).

In a traditional EJB architecture, DTOs serve dual purposes: first, they work around the problem that entity beans are not serializable; second, they implicitly define an assembly phase where all data to be used by the view is fetched and marshalled into the DTOs before returning control to the presentation tier.

So, for many people, DTOs and VOs are the same thing (but Fowler uses VOs to mean something else as we saw). Most of time, they follow the JavaBeans conventions and are thus JavaBeans too. And all are POJOs.

Is it possible to display inline images from html in an Android TextView?

KOTLIN

There is also the possibility to use sufficientlysecure.htmltextview.HtmlTextView

Use like below in gradle files:

Project gradle file:

repositories {
    jcenter()
}

App gradle file:

dependencies {
implementation 'org.sufficientlysecure:html-textview:3.9'
}

Inside xml file replace your textView with:

<org.sufficientlysecure.htmltextview.HtmlTextView
      android:id="@+id/allNewsBlockTextView"
      android:layout_width="match_parent"
      android:layout_height="wrap_content"
      android:layout_margin="2dp"
      android:textColor="#000"
      android:textSize="18sp"
      app:htmlToString="@{detailsViewModel.selectedText}" />

Last line above is if you use Binding adapters where the code will be like:

@BindingAdapter("htmlToString")
fun bindTextViewHtml(textView: HtmlTextView, htmlValue: String) {

if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= Build.VERSION_CODES.N) {
    textView.setHtml(
        htmlValue,
        HtmlHttpImageGetter(textView, "n", true)
    );
    } else {
        textView.setHtml(
        htmlValue,
        HtmlHttpImageGetter(textView, "n", true)
        );
    }
}

How to get Wikipedia content using Wikipedia's API?

You can use the extract_html field of the summary REST endpoint for this: e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/api/rest_v1/page/summary/Cat.

Note: This aims to simply the content a bit by removing most of the pronunciations, mainly in parentheses in some cases.

VS2010 command prompt gives error: Cannot determine the location of the VS Common Tools folder

Another cause can be VS 2013 Community Update 5 installing the WRONG SHORTCUTS; it installs VS 2012 shortcuts for VS 2013.

To fix it, edit the shortcuts. Rename them from 2012 to 2013, and change '11' to '12' in the path to vcvarsall.

How do I create my own URL protocol? (e.g. so://...)

You don't really have to do any registering as such. I've seen many programs, like emule, create their own protocol specificier (that's what I think it's called). After that, you basically just have to set some values in the registry as to what program handles that protocol. I'm not sure if there's any official registry of protocol specifiers. There isn't really much to stop you from creating your own protocol specifier for your own application if you want people to open your app from their browser.

How much data can a List can hold at the maximum?

It would depend on the implementation, but the limit is not defined by the List interface.

The interface however defines the size() method, which returns an int.

Returns the number of elements in this list. If this list contains more than Integer.MAX_VALUE elements, returns Integer.MAX_VALUE.

So, no limit, but after you reach Integer.MAX_VALUE, the behaviour of the list changes a bit

ArrayList (which is tagged) is backed by an array, and is limited to the size of the array - i.e. Integer.MAX_VALUE

Download File Using Javascript/jQuery

I have had good results with using a FORM tag since it works everywhere and you don't have to create temporarily files on server. The method works like this.

On the client side (page HTML) you create an invisible form like this

<form method="POST" action="/download.php" target="_blank" id="downloadForm">
    <input type="hidden" name="data" id="csv">
</form>

Then you add this Javascript code to your button:

$('#button').click(function() {
     $('#csv').val('---your data---');
     $('#downloadForm').submit();
}

The on the server-side you have the following PHP code in download.php:

<?php
header('Content-Type: text/csv');
header('Content-Description: File Transfer');
header('Content-Type: application/octet-stream');
header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=out.csv');
header('Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary');
header('Connection: Keep-Alive');
header('Expires: 0');
header('Cache-Control: must-revalidate, post-check=0, pre-check=0');
header('Pragma: public');
header('Content-Length: ' . strlen($data));

echo $_REQUEST['data'];
exit();

You can even create zip files of your data like this:

<?php

$file = tempnam("tmp", "zip");

$zip = new ZipArchive();
$zip->open($file, ZipArchive::OVERWRITE);
$zip->addFromString('test.csv', $_REQUEST['data']);
$zip->close();

header('Content-Type: application/zip');
header('Content-Length: ' . filesize($file));
header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="file.zip"');
readfile($file);
unlink($file);

The best part is it does not leave any residual files on your server since everything is created and destroyed on the fly!

How to create a new database after initally installing oracle database 11g Express Edition?

If you wish to create a new schema in XE, you need to create an USER and assign its privileges. Follow these steps:

  • Open the SQL*Plus Command-line
SQL> connect sys as sysdba
  • Enter the password
SQL> CREATE USER myschema IDENTIFIED BY Hga&dshja;
SQL> ALTER USER myschema QUOTA unlimited ON SYSTEM;
SQL> GRANT CREATE SESSION, CONNECT, RESOURCE, DBA TO myschema;
SQL> GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES TO myschema;

Now you can connect via Oracle SQL Developer and create your tables.

Line break (like <br>) using only css

It works like this:

h4 {

}

Parsing a YAML file in Python, and accessing the data?

Since PyYAML's yaml.load() function parses YAML documents to native Python data structures, you can just access items by key or index. Using the example from the question you linked:

import yaml
with open('tree.yaml', 'r') as f:
    doc = yaml.load(f)

To access branch1 text you would use:

txt = doc["treeroot"]["branch1"]
print txt
"branch1 text"

because, in your YAML document, the value of the branch1 key is under the treeroot key.

Change SVN repository URL

In my case, the svn relocate command (as well as svn switch --relocate) failed for some reason (maybe the repo was not moved correctly, or something else). I faced this error:

$ svn relocate NEW_SERVER
svn: E195009: The repository at 'NEW_SERVER' has uuid 'e7500204-160a-403c-b4b6-6bc4f25883ea', but the WC has '3a8c444c-5998-40fb-8cb3-409b74712e46'

I did not want to redownload the whole repository, so I found a workaround. It worked in my case, but generally I can imagine a lot of things can get broken (so either backup your working copy, or be ready to re-checkout the whole repo if something goes wrong).

The repo address and its UUID are saved in the .svn/wc.db SQLite database file in your working copy. Just open the database (e.g. in SQLite Browser), browse table REPOSITORY, and change the root and uuid column values to the new ones. You can find the UUID of the new repo by issuing svn info NEW_SERVER.

Again, treat this as a last resort method.

Python memory usage of numpy arrays

In python notebooks I often want to filter out 'dangling' numpy.ndarray's, in particular the ones that are stored in _1, _2, etc that were never really meant to stay alive.

I use this code to get a listing of all of them and their size.

Not sure if locals() or globals() is better here.

import sys
import numpy
from humanize import naturalsize

for size, name in sorted(
    (value.nbytes, name)
    for name, value in locals().items()
    if isinstance(value, numpy.ndarray)):
  print("{:>30}: {:>8}".format(name, naturalsize(size)))

List rows after specific date

Simply put:

SELECT *
FROM TABLE_NAME
WHERE
dob > '1/21/2012'

Where 1/21/2012 is the date and you want all data, including that date.

SELECT *
FROM TABLE_NAME
WHERE
dob BETWEEN '1/21/2012' AND '2/22/2012'

Use a between if you're selecting time between two dates

JavaScriptSerializer - JSON serialization of enum as string

This is easily done by adding a ScriptIgnore attribute to the Gender property, causing it to not be serialised, and adding a GenderString property which does get serialised:

class Person
{
    int Age { get; set; }

    [ScriptIgnore]
    Gender Gender { get; set; }

    string GenderString { get { return Gender.ToString(); } }
}

How can I read the client's machine/computer name from the browser?

You can do it with IE 'sometimes' as I have done this for an internal application on an intranet which is IE only. Try the following:

function GetComputerName() {
    try {
        var network = new ActiveXObject('WScript.Network');
        // Show a pop up if it works
        alert(network.computerName);
    }
    catch (e) { }
}

It may or may not require some specific security setting setup in IE as well to allow the browser to access the ActiveX object.

ClientScript.RegisterClientScriptBlock?

The method System.Web.UI.Page.RegisterClientScriptBlock has been deprecated for some time (along with the other Page.Register* methods), ever since .NET 2.0 as shown by MSDN.

Instead use the .NET 2.0 Page.ClientScript.Register* methods. - (The ClientScript property expresses an instance of the ClientScriptManager class )

Guessing the problem

If you are saying your JavaScript alert box occurs before the page's content is visibly rendered, and therefore the page remains white (or still unrendered) when the alert box is dismissed by the user, then try using the Page.ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript(..) method instead because it runs the given client-side code when the page finishes loading - and its arguments are similar to what you're using already.

Also check for general JavaScript errors in the page - this is often seen by an error icon in the browser's status bar. Sometimes a JavaScript error will hold up or disturb unrelated elements on the page.

file_get_contents() Breaks Up UTF-8 Characters

Try this too

 $url = 'http://www.domain.com/';
    $html = file_get_contents($url);

    //Change encoding to UTF-8 from ISO-8859-1
    $html = iconv('UTF-8', 'ISO-8859-1//TRANSLIT', $html);

How can I execute a PHP function in a form action?

In PHP functions will not be evaluated inside strings, because there are different rules for variables.

<?php
function name() {
  return 'Mark';
}

echo 'My name is: name()'; // Output: My name is name()
echo 'My name is: '. name(); // Output: My name is Mark

The action parameter to the tag in HTML should not reference the PHP function you want to run. Action should refer to a page on the web server that will process the form input and return new HTML to the user. This can be the same location as the PHP script that outputs the form, or some people prefer to make a separate PHP file to handle actions.

The basic process is the same either way:

  1. Generate HTML form to the user.
  2. User fills in the form, clicks submit.
  3. The form data is sent to the locations defined by action on the server.
  4. The script validates the data and does something with it.
  5. Usually a new HTML page is returned.

A simple example would be:

<?php
// $_POST is a magic PHP variable that will always contain
// any form data that was posted to this page.
// We check here to see if the textfield called 'name' had
// some data entered into it, if so we process it, if not we
// output the form.
if (isset($_POST['name'])) {
  print_name($_POST['name']);
}
else {
  print_form();
}

// In this function we print the name the user provided.
function print_name($name) {
  // $name should be validated and checked here depending on use.
  // In this case we just HTML escape it so nothing nasty should
  // be able to get through:
  echo 'Your name is: '. htmlentities($name);
}

// This function is called when no name was sent to us over HTTP.
function print_form() {
  echo '
    <form name="form1" method="post" action="">
    <p><label><input type="text" name="name" id="textfield"></label></p>
    <p><label><input type="submit" name="button" id="button" value="Submit"></label></p>
    </form>
  ';
}
?>

How to insert text with single quotation sql server 2005

You asked how to escape an Apostrophe character (') in SQL Server. All the answers above do an excellent job of explaining that.

Pythonically add header to a csv file

You just add one additional row before you execute the loop. This row contains your CSV file header name.

schema = ['a','b','c','b']
row = 4
generators = ['A','B','C','D']
with open('test.csv','wb') as csvfile:
     writer = csv.writer(csvfile, delimiter=delimiter)
# Gives the header name row into csv
     writer.writerow([g for g in schema])
#Data add in csv file
     for x in xrange(rows):
         writer.writerow([g() for g in generators])

Docker Repository Does Not Have a Release File on Running apt-get update on Ubuntu

I saw an interesting post from Ikraider here that solved my issue : https://github.com/docker/docker/issues/22599

Website instructions are wrong, here is what works in 16.04:

curl -s https://yum.dockerproject.org/gpg | sudo apt-key add
apt-key fingerprint 58118E89F3A912897C070ADBF76221572C52609D

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install docker-engine=1.13.0-0~ubuntu-xenial

jQuery getTime function

@nickf's correct. However, to be a little more precise:

// if you try to print it, it will return something like:
// Sat Mar 21 2009 20:13:07 GMT-0400 (Eastern Daylight Time)
// This time comes from the user's machine.
var myDate = new Date();

So if you want to display it as mm/dd/yyyy, you would do this:

var displayDate = (myDate.getMonth()+1) + '/' + (myDate.getDate()) + '/' + myDate.getFullYear();

Check out the full reference of the Date object. Unfortunately it is not nearly as nice to print out various formats as it is with other server-side languages. For this reason there-are-many-functions available in the wild.

MySQL VARCHAR size?

100 characters.

This is the var (variable) in varchar: you only store what you enter (and an extra 2 bytes to store length upto 65535)

If it was char(200) then you'd always store 200 characters, padded with 100 spaces

See the docs: "The CHAR and VARCHAR Types"

Editor does not contain a main type in Eclipse

Make sure you do Run As > Java Application.

If not you could try a Project > Clean

Secure Web Services: REST over HTTPS vs SOAP + WS-Security. Which is better?

The answer actually depends on your specific requirements.

For instance, do you need to protect your web messages or confidentiality is not required and all you need is to authenticate end parties and ensure message integrity? If this is the case - and it often is with web services - HTTPS is probably the wrong hammer.

However - from my experience - do not overlook the complexity of the system you're building. Not only HTTPS is easier to deploy correctly, but an application that relies on the transport layer security is easier to debug (over plain HTTP).

Good luck.

How to POST the data from a modal form of Bootstrap?

You need to handle it via ajax submit.

Something like this:

$(function(){
    $('#subscribe-email-form').on('submit', function(e){
        e.preventDefault();
        $.ajax({
            url: url, //this is the submit URL
            type: 'GET', //or POST
            data: $('#subscribe-email-form').serialize(),
            success: function(data){
                 alert('successfully submitted')
            }
        });
    });
});

A better way would be to use a django form, and then render the following snippet:

<form>
    <div class="modal-body">
        <input type="email" placeholder="email"/>
        <p>This service will notify you by email should any issue arise that affects your plivo service.</p>
    </div>
    <div class="modal-footer">
        <input type="submit" value="SUBMIT" class="btn"/>
    </div>
</form>

via the context - example : {{form}}.

How to implement "select all" check box in HTML?

This sample works with native JavaScript where the checkbox variable name varies, i.e. not all "foo."

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<body>

<p>Toggling checkboxes</p>
<script>
function getcheckboxes() {
    var node_list = document.getElementsByTagName('input');
    var checkboxes = [];
    for (var i = 0; i < node_list.length; i++)
    {
        var node = node_list[i];
        if (node.getAttribute('type') == 'checkbox')
        {
            checkboxes.push(node);
        }
    }
    return checkboxes;
}
function toggle(source) {
    checkboxes = getcheckboxes();
    for (var i = 0 n = checkboxes.length; i < n; i++)
    {
        checkboxes[i].checked = source.checked;
    }
}
</script>

<input type="checkbox" name="foo1" value="bar1"> Bar 1<br/>
<input type="checkbox" name="foo2" value="bar2"> Bar 2<br/>
<input type="checkbox" name="foo3" value="bar3"> Bar 3<br/>
<input type="checkbox" name="foo4" value="bar4"> Bar 4<br/>

<input type="checkbox" onClick="toggle(this)" /> Toggle All<br/>

</body>
</html>

SQL Server: Make all UPPER case to Proper Case/Title Case

I think you will find that the following is more efficient:

IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.ProperCase') IS NOT NULL
    DROP FUNCTION dbo.ProperCase
GO
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.PROPERCASE (
    @str VARCHAR(8000))
RETURNS VARCHAR(8000)
AS
BEGIN
    SET @str = ' ' + @str
    SET @str = REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE( @str, ' a', ' A'), ' b', ' B'), ' c', ' C'), ' d', ' D'), ' e', ' E'), ' f', ' F'), ' g', ' G'), ' h', ' H'), ' i', ' I'), ' j', ' J'), ' k', ' K'), ' l', ' L'), ' m', ' M'), ' n', ' N'), ' o', ' O'), ' p', ' P'), ' q', ' Q'), ' r', ' R'), ' s', ' S'), ' t', ' T'), ' u', ' U'), ' v', ' V'), ' w', ' W'), ' x', ' X'), ' y', ' Y'), ' z', ' Z')
    RETURN RIGHT(@str, LEN(@str) - 1)
END
GO

The replace statement could be cut and pasted directly into a SQL query. It is ultra ugly, however by replacing @str with the column you are interested in, you will not pay a price for an implicit cursor like you will with the udfs thus posted. I find that even using my UDF it is much more efficient.

Oh and instead of generating the replace statement by hand use this:

-- Code Generator for expression
DECLARE @x  INT,
    @c  CHAR(1),
    @sql    VARCHAR(8000)
SET @x = 0
SET @sql = '@str' -- actual variable/column you want to replace
WHILE @x < 26
BEGIN
    SET @c = CHAR(ASCII('a') + @x)
    SET @sql = 'REPLACE(' + @sql + ', '' ' + @c+  ''', '' ' + UPPER(@c) + ''')'
    SET @x = @x + 1
END
PRINT @sql

Anyway it depends on the number of rows. I wish you could just do s/\b([a-z])/uc $1/, but oh well we work with the tools we have.

NOTE you would have to use this as you would have to use it as....SELECT dbo.ProperCase(LOWER(column)) since the column is in uppercase. It actually works pretty fast on my table of 5,000 entries (not even one second) even with the lower.

In response to the flurry of comments regarding internationalization I present the following implementation that handles every ascii character relying only on SQL Server's Implementation of upper and lower. Remember, the variables we are using here are VARCHAR which means that they can only hold ASCII values. In order to use further international alphabets, you have to use NVARCHAR. The logic would be similar but you would need to use UNICODE and NCHAR in place of ASCII AND CHAR and the replace statement would be much more huge....

-- Code Generator for expression
DECLARE @x  INT,
    @c  CHAR(1),
    @sql    VARCHAR(8000),
    @count  INT
SEt @x = 0
SET @count = 0
SET @sql = '@str' -- actual variable you want to replace
WHILE @x < 256
BEGIN
    SET @c = CHAR(@x)
    -- Only generate replacement expression for characters where upper and lowercase differ
    IF @x = ASCII(LOWER(@c)) AND @x != ASCII(UPPER(@c))
    BEGIN
        SET @sql = 'REPLACE(' + @sql + ', '' ' + @c+  ''', '' ' + UPPER(@c) + ''')'
        SET @count = @count + 1
    END
    SET @x = @x + 1
END
PRINT @sql
PRINT 'Total characters substituted: ' + CONVERT(VARCHAR(255), @count)

Basically the premise of the my method is trading pre-computing for efficiency. The full ASCII implementation is as follows:

IF OBJECT_ID('dbo.ProperCase') IS NOT NULL
    DROP FUNCTION dbo.ProperCase
GO
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.PROPERCASE (
    @str VARCHAR(8000))
RETURNS VARCHAR(8000)
AS
BEGIN
    SET @str = ' ' + @str
SET @str =     REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(REPLACE(@str, ' a', ' A'), ' b', ' B'), ' c', ' C'), ' d', ' D'), ' e', ' E'), ' f', ' F'), ' g', ' G'), ' h', ' H'), ' i', ' I'), ' j', ' J'), ' k', ' K'), ' l', ' L'), ' m', ' M'), ' n', ' N'), ' o', ' O'), ' p', ' P'), ' q', ' Q'), ' r', ' R'), ' s', ' S'), ' t', ' T'), ' u', ' U'), ' v', ' V'), ' w', ' W'), ' x', ' X'), ' y', ' Y'), ' z', ' Z'), ' š', ' Š'), ' œ', ' Œ'), ' ž', ' Ž'), ' à', ' À'), ' á', ' Á'), ' â', ' Â'), ' ã', ' Ã'), ' ä', ' Ä'), ' å', ' Å'), ' æ', ' Æ'), ' ç', ' Ç'), ' è', ' È'), ' é', ' É'), ' ê', ' Ê'), ' ë', ' Ë'), ' ì', ' Ì'), ' í', ' Í'), ' î', ' Î'), ' ï', ' Ï'), ' ð', ' Ð'), ' ñ', ' Ñ'), ' ò', ' Ò'), ' ó', ' Ó'), ' ô', ' Ô'), ' õ', ' Õ'), ' ö', ' Ö'), ' ø', ' Ø'), ' ù', ' Ù'), ' ú', ' Ú'), ' û', ' Û'), ' ü', ' Ü'), ' ý', ' Ý'), ' þ', ' Þ'), ' ÿ', ' Ÿ')
    RETURN RIGHT(@str, LEN(@str) - 1)
END
GO

This config goes in .Net client application may be on start up or whenever but before starting your tests.

Moreover you can have it in app.config file as well like following

<system.net>
    <connectionManagement>
      <add maxconnection = "200" address ="*" />
    </connectionManagement>
  </system.net>

How to fire an event when v-model changes?

Vue2: if you only want to detect change on input blur (e.g. after press enter or click somewhere else) do (more info here)

<input @change="foo" v-model... >

If you wanna detect single character changes (during user typing) use

<input @keydown="foo" v-model... >

You can also use @keyup and @input events. If you wanna to pass additional parameters use in template e.g. @keyDown="foo($event, param1, param2)". Comparision below (editable version here)

Copy existing project with a new name in Android Studio

Perhaps this will help someone.

For Android Studio 4.x Projects, you need following steps:

  • copy project directory to new project directory
  • from Android Studio, open new project directory
  • edit settings.gradle file by updating the rootProject.name='newProjectName'.
  • then sync gradle
  • and here you go the project is ready, and you can start updating manifest, packages, google-services.json and all other stuff

What is the difference between <%, <%=, <%# and -%> in ERB in Rails?

Rails does not use the stdlib's ERB by default, it uses erubis. Sources: this dev's comment, ActionView's gemspec, accepted merge request I did while writing this.

There are behavior differences between them, in particular on how the hyphen operators %- and -% work.

Documentation is scarce, Where is Ruby's ERB format "officially" defined? so what follows are empirical conclusions.

All tests suppose:

require 'erb'
require 'erubis'

When you can use -

  • ERB: you must pass - to trim_mode option of ERB.new to use it.
  • erubis: enabled by default.

Examples:

begin ERB.new("<%= 'a' -%>\nb").result; rescue SyntaxError ; else raise; end
ERB.new("<%= 'a' -%>\nb"  , nil, '-') .result == 'ab'  or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new("<%= 'a' -%>  \n b").result == 'a b' or raise

What -% does:

  • ERB: remove the next character if it is a newline.

  • erubis:

    • in <% %> (without =), - is useless because <% %> and <% -%> are the same. <% %> removes the current line if it only contains whitespaces, and does nothing otherwise.

    • in <%= -%> (with =):

      • remove the entire line if it only contains whitespaces
      • else, if there is a non-space before the tag, and only whitesapces after, remove the whitespces that come after
      • else, there is a non-space after the tag: do nothing

Examples:

# Remove
ERB.new("a \nb <% 0 -%>\n c", nil, '-').result == "a \nb  c" or raise

# Don't do anything: not followed by newline, but by space:
ERB.new("a\n<% 0 -%> \nc", nil, '-').result == "a\nb \nc" or raise

# Remove the current line because only whitesapaces:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 %> \nb").result == 'b' or raise

# Same as above, thus useless because longer.
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 -%> \nb").result == 'b' or raise

# Don't do anything because line not empty.
Erubis::Eruby.new("a <% 0 %> \nb").result == "a  \nb" or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 %> a\nb").result == "  a\nb" or raise
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <% 0 -%> a\nb").result == "  a\nb" or raise

# Don't remove the current line because of `=`:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 %> \nb").result == " 0 \nb" or raise

# Remove the current line even with `=`:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 -%> \nb").result == " 0b"   or raise

# Remove forward only because of `-` and non space before:
Erubis::Eruby.new("a <%= 0 -%> \nb").result == "a 0b"   or raise

# Don't do anything because non-whitespace forward:
Erubis::Eruby.new(" <%= 0 -%> a\nb").result == " 0 a\nb"   or raise

What %- does:

  • ERB: remove whitespaces before tag and after previous newlines, but only if there are only whitespaces before.

  • erubis: useless because <%- %> is the same as <% %> (without =), and this cannot be used with = which is the only case where -% can be useful. So never use this.

Examples:

# Remove
ERB.new("a \n  <%- 0 %> b\n c", nil, '-').result == "a \n b\n c" or raise

# b is not whitespace: do nothing:
ERB.new("a \nb  <%- 0 %> c\n d", nil, '-').result == "a \nb   c\n d" or raise

What %- and -% do together

The exact combination of both effects separately.

Cannot get OpenCV to compile because of undefined references?

This is a linker issue. Try:

g++ -o test_1 test_1.cpp `pkg-config opencv --cflags --libs`

This should work to compile the source. However, if you recently compiled OpenCV from source, you will meet linking issue in run-time, the library will not be found. In most cases, after compiling libraries from source, you need to do finally:

sudo ldconfig

Launching an application (.EXE) from C#?

Disable scrolling on `<input type=number>`

First you must stop the mousewheel event by either:

  1. Disabling it with mousewheel.disableScroll
  2. Intercepting it with e.preventDefault();
  3. By removing focus from the element el.blur();

The first two approaches both stop the window from scrolling and the last removes focus from the element; both of which are undesirable outcomes.

One workaround is to use el.blur() and refocus the element after a delay:

$('input[type=number]').on('mousewheel', function(){
  var el = $(this);
  el.blur();
  setTimeout(function(){
    el.focus();
  }, 10);
});

Java/ JUnit - AssertTrue vs AssertFalse

I think it's just for your convenience (and the readers of your code)

Your code, and your unit tests should be ideally self documenting which this API helps with,

Think abt what is more clear to read:

AssertTrue(!(a > 3));

or

AssertFalse(a > 3);

When you open your tests after xx months when your tests suddenly fail, it would take you much less time to understand what went wrong in the second case (my opinion). If you disagree, you can always stick with AssertTrue for all cases :)

How to install Android app on LG smart TV?

LG, VIZIO, SAMSUNG and PANASONIC TVs are not android based, and you cannot run APKs off of them... You should just buy a fire stick and call it a day. The only TVs that are android-based, and you can install APKs are: SONY, PHILIPS and SHARP.

What is the difference between the kernel space and the user space?

By Sunil Yadav, on Quora:

The Linux Kernel refers to everything that runs in Kernel mode and is made up of several distinct layers. At the lowest layer, the Kernel interacts with the hardware via the HAL. At the middle level, the UNIX Kernel is divided into 4 distinct areas. The first of the four areas handles character devices, raw and cooked TTY and terminal handling. The second area handles network device drivers, routing protocols and sockets. The third area handles disk device drivers, page and buffer caches, file system, virtual memory, file naming and mapping. The fourth and last area handles process dispatching, scheduling, creation and termination as well as signal handling. Above all this we have the top layer of the Kernel which includes system calls, interrupts and traps. This level serves as the interface to each of the lower level functions. A programmer uses the various system calls and interrupts to interact with the features of the operating system.

Markdown and image alignment

Many Markdown "extra" processors support attributes. So you can include a class name like so (PHP Markdown Extra):

![Flowers](/flowers.jpeg){.callout}

or, alternatively (Maruku, Kramdown, Python Markdown):

![Flowers](/flowers.jpeg){: .callout}

Then, of course, you can use a stylesheet the proper way:

.callout {
    float: right;
}

If yours supports this syntax, it gives you the best of both worlds: no embedded markup, and a stylesheet abstract enough to not need to be modified by your content editor.

Difference between wait and sleep

Lets assume you are hearing songs.

As long as the current song is running, the next song wont play, i.e Sleep() called by next song

If you finish the song it will stop and until you select play button(notify()) it wont play, i.e wait() called by current song.

In this both cases songs going to Wait states.

jQuery - Trigger event when an element is removed from the DOM

referencing to @David answer:

When You want to do soo with another function, eg. html() like in my case, don't forget to add return in new function:

(function() {
    var ev = new $.Event('html'),
        orig = $.fn.html;
    $.fn.html = function() {
        $(this).trigger(ev);
        return orig.apply(this, arguments);
    }
})();

jQuery.active function

This is a variable jQuery uses internally, but had no reason to hide, so it's there to use. Just a heads up, it becomes jquery.ajax.active next release. There's no documentation because it's exposed but not in the official API, lots of things are like this actually, like jQuery.cache (where all of jQuery.data() goes).

I'm guessing here by actual usage in the library, it seems to be there exclusively to support $.ajaxStart() and $.ajaxStop() (which I'll explain further), but they only care if it's 0 or not when a request starts or stops. But, since there's no reason to hide it, it's exposed to you can see the actual number of simultaneous AJAX requests currently going on.

When jQuery starts an AJAX request, this happens:

if ( s.global && ! jQuery.active++ ) {
  jQuery.event.trigger( "ajaxStart" );
}

This is what causes the $.ajaxStart() event to fire, the number of connections just went from 0 to 1 (jQuery.active++ isn't 0 after this one, and !0 == true), this means the first of the current simultaneous requests started. The same thing happens at the other end. When an AJAX request stops (because of a beforeSend abort via return false or an ajax call complete function runs):

if ( s.global && ! --jQuery.active ) {
  jQuery.event.trigger( "ajaxStop" );
}

This is what causes the $.ajaxStop() event to fire, the number of requests went down to 0, meaning the last simultaneous AJAX call finished. The other global AJAX handlers fire in there along the way as well.

How to drop rows from pandas data frame that contains a particular string in a particular column?

This will only work if you want to compare exact strings. It will not work in case you want to check if the column string contains any of the strings in the list.

The right way to compare with a list would be :

searchfor = ['john', 'doe']
df = df[~df.col.str.contains('|'.join(searchfor))]

Eclipse - no Java (JRE) / (JDK) ... no virtual machine

I have windows 7 64-bit, and I had this same problem with eclipse. To get it to work, I had to use internet explorer (64-bit version) to download java. This was the only way to get java to install a 64-bit version. When I used firefox to install java, it automatically installed a 32-bit version (so idiotic!). And The Eclipse 64-bit version wouldn't detect the java 32-bit version.

How to set specific window (frame) size in java swing?

Try this, but you can adjust frame size with bounds and edit title.

package co.form.Try;

CSS Printing: Avoiding cut-in-half DIVs between pages?

Using break-inside should work:

@media print {
  div {
    break-inside: avoid;
  }
}

It works on all major browsers:

  • Chrome 50+
  • Edge 12+
  • Firefox 65+
  • Opera 37+
  • Safari 10+

Using page-break-inside: avoid; instead should work too, but has been exactly deprecated by break-inside: avoid.

Why does the preflight OPTIONS request of an authenticated CORS request work in Chrome but not Firefox?

Why does it work in Chrome and not Firefox?

The W3 spec for CORS preflight requests clearly states that user credentials should be excluded. There is a bug in Chrome and WebKit where OPTIONS requests returning a status of 401 still send the subsequent request.

Firefox has a related bug filed that ends with a link to the W3 public webapps mailing list asking for the CORS spec to be changed to allow authentication headers to be sent on the OPTIONS request at the benefit of IIS users. Basically, they are waiting for those servers to be obsoleted.

How can I get the OPTIONS request to send and respond consistently?

Simply have the server (API in this example) respond to OPTIONS requests without requiring authentication.

Kinvey did a good job expanding on this while also linking to an issue of the Twitter API outlining the catch-22 problem of this exact scenario interestingly a couple weeks before any of the browser issues were filed.

VirtualBox Cannot register the hard disk already exists

1 - Open the files '.vbox' and '.vbox-prev' (if exist) files in any text editor and replace the first character of HardDisk uuid (take note to revert this change on step 6)

Example: nano /home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vbox

Change:

<HardDisks>
        <HardDisk uuid="{3ebaa9b6-8318-4b81-b853-8f30dd278bdc}" location="/home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/>

To:

<HardDisks>
        <HardDisk uuid="{2ebaa9b6-8318-4b81-b853-8f30dd278bdc}" location="/home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/>

2 - Reboot machine

4 - Stop Virtual Machine (if started)

5 - On terminal:

su vbox
cd /home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/
VBoxManage modifyhd WindowsServer.vdi --resize SIZE
exit
exit

change SIZE for a number in Megabytes, example 80000 (80GB)

6 - Open again the files '.vbox' and '.vbox-prev' (if exist) files in any text editor and replace the first character of HardDisk uuid whith the original value

Example: nano /home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vbox

Change:

<HardDisks>
        <HardDisk uuid="{2ebaa9b6-8318-4b81-b853-8f30dd278bdc}" location="/home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/>

To:

<HardDisks>
        <HardDisk uuid="{3ebaa9b6-8318-4b81-b853-8f30dd278bdc}" location="/home/virtualbox/WindowsServer/WindowsServer.vdi" format="VDI" type="Normal"/>

7 - Reboot machine

How to implement debounce in Vue2?

If you are using Vue you can also use v.model.lazy instead of debounce but remember v.model.lazy will not always work as Vue limits it for custom components.

For custom components you should use :value along with @change.native

<b-input :value="data" @change.native="data = $event.target.value" ></b-input>

git cherry-pick says "...38c74d is a merge but no -m option was given"

@Borealid's answer is correct, but suppose that you don't care about preserving the exact merging history of a branch and just want to cherry-pick a linearized version of it. Here's an easy and safe way to do that:

Starting state: you are on branch X, and you want to cherry-pick the commits Y..Z.

  1. git checkout -b tempZ Z
  2. git rebase Y
  3. git checkout -b newX X
  4. git cherry-pick Y..tempZ
  5. (optional) git branch -D tempZ

What this does is to create a branch tempZ based on Z, but with the history from Y onward linearized, and then cherry-pick that onto a copy of X called newX. (It's safer to do this on a new branch rather than to mutate X.) Of course there might be conflicts in step 4, which you'll have to resolve in the usual way (cherry-pick works very much like rebase in that respect). Finally it deletes the temporary tempZ branch.

If step 2 gives the message "Current branch tempZ is up to date", then Y..Z was already linear, so just ignore that message and proceed with steps 3 onward.

Then review newX and see whether that did what you wanted.

(Note: this is not the same as a simple git rebase X when on branch Z, because it doesn't depend in any way on the relationship between X and Y; there may be commits between the common ancestor and Y that you didn't want.)

Javascript to set hidden form value on drop down change

If you have HTML like this, for example:

<select id='myselect'>
    <option value='1'>A</option>
    <option value='2'>B</option>
    <option value='3'>C</option>
    <option value='4'>D</option>
</select>
<input type='hidden' id='myhidden' value=''>

All you have to do is bind a function to the change event of the select, and do what you need there:

<script type='text/javascript'>
$(function() {
    $('#myselect').change(function() {
        // if changed to, for example, the last option, then
        // $(this).find('option:selected').text() == D
        // $(this).val() == 4
        // get whatever value you want into a variable
        var x = $(this).val();
        // and update the hidden input's value
        $('#myhidden').val(x);
    });
});
</script>

All things considered, if you're going to be doing a lot of jQuery programming, always have the documentation open. It is very easy to find what you need there if you give it a chance.

(HTML) Download a PDF file instead of opening them in browser when clicked

You can use

Response.AddHeader("Content-disposition", "attachment; filename=" + Name);

Check out this example:

http://www.codeproject.com/KB/aspnet/textfile.aspx

This goes for ASP.NET. I am sure you can find similar solutions in all other server side languages. However there's no javascript solution to the best of my knowledge.

Regular expression for excluding special characters

I guess it depends what language you are targeting. In general, something like this should work:

[^<>%$]

The "[]" construct defines a character class, which will match any of the listed characters. Putting "^" as the first character negates the match, ie: any character OTHER than one of those listed.

You may need to escape some of the characters within the "[]", depending on what language/regex engine you are using.

linux/videodev.h : no such file or directory - OpenCV on ubuntu 11.04

The current answer is incomplete. Installing libv4l-dev creates a /usr/include/linux/videodev2.h but doesn't solve the stated problem of not being able to find linux/videodev.h. The library does ship header files for compatibility, but fails to put them where applications will look for them.

sudo apt-get install libv4l-dev
cd /usr/include/linux
sudo ln -s ../libv4l1-videodev.h videodev.h

This provides a linux/videodev.h, and of the right version (1).

Difference between attr_accessor and attr_accessible

attr_accessor is a Ruby method that gives you setter and getter methods to an instance variable of the same name. So it is equivalent to

class MyModel
  def my_variable
    @my_variable
  end
  def my_variable=(value)
    @my_variable = value
  end
end

attr_accessible is a Rails method that determines what variables can be set in a mass assignment.

When you submit a form, and you have something like MyModel.new params[:my_model] then you want to have a little bit more control, so that people can't submit things that you don't want them to.

You might do attr_accessible :email so that when someone updates their account, they can change their email address. But you wouldn't do attr_accessible :email, :salary because then a person could set their salary through a form submission. In other words, they could hack their way to a raise.

That kind of information needs to be explicitly handled. Just removing it from the form isn't enough. Someone could go in with firebug and add the element into the form to submit a salary field. They could use the built in curl to submit a new salary to the controller update method, they could create a script that submits a post with that information.

So attr_accessor is about creating methods to store variables, and attr_accessible is about the security of mass assignments.

Fitting polynomial model to data in R

Which model is the "best fitting model" depends on what you mean by "best". R has tools to help, but you need to provide the definition for "best" to choose between them. Consider the following example data and code:

x <- 1:10
y <- x + c(-0.5,0.5)

plot(x,y, xlim=c(0,11), ylim=c(-1,12))

fit1 <- lm( y~offset(x) -1 )
fit2 <- lm( y~x )
fit3 <- lm( y~poly(x,3) )
fit4 <- lm( y~poly(x,9) )
library(splines)
fit5 <- lm( y~ns(x, 3) )
fit6 <- lm( y~ns(x, 9) )

fit7 <- lm( y ~ x + cos(x*pi) )

xx <- seq(0,11, length.out=250)
lines(xx, predict(fit1, data.frame(x=xx)), col='blue')
lines(xx, predict(fit2, data.frame(x=xx)), col='green')
lines(xx, predict(fit3, data.frame(x=xx)), col='red')
lines(xx, predict(fit4, data.frame(x=xx)), col='purple')
lines(xx, predict(fit5, data.frame(x=xx)), col='orange')
lines(xx, predict(fit6, data.frame(x=xx)), col='grey')
lines(xx, predict(fit7, data.frame(x=xx)), col='black')

Which of those models is the best? arguments could be made for any of them (but I for one would not want to use the purple one for interpolation).

Swift: Reload a View Controller

You shouldn't call viewDidLoad method manually, Instead if you want to reload any data or any UI, you can use this:

override func viewDidLoad() {
    super.viewDidLoad();

    let myButton = UIButton()

    // When user touch myButton, we're going to call loadData method
    myButton.addTarget(self, action: #selector(self.loadData), forControlEvents: .TouchUpInside)

    // Load the data
    self.loadData();
}

func loadData() {
    // code to load data from network, and refresh the interface
    tableView.reloadData()
}

Whenever you want to reload the data and refresh the interface, you can call self.loadData()

PySpark: withColumn() with two conditions and three outcomes

There are a few efficient ways to implement this. Let's start with required imports:

from pyspark.sql.functions import col, expr, when

You can use Hive IF function inside expr:

new_column_1 = expr(
    """IF(fruit1 IS NULL OR fruit2 IS NULL, 3, IF(fruit1 = fruit2, 1, 0))"""
)

or when + otherwise:

new_column_2 = when(
    col("fruit1").isNull() | col("fruit2").isNull(), 3
).when(col("fruit1") == col("fruit2"), 1).otherwise(0)

Finally you could use following trick:

from pyspark.sql.functions import coalesce, lit

new_column_3 = coalesce((col("fruit1") == col("fruit2")).cast("int"), lit(3))

With example data:

df = sc.parallelize([
    ("orange", "apple"), ("kiwi", None), (None, "banana"),
    ("mango", "mango"), (None, None)
]).toDF(["fruit1", "fruit2"])

you can use this as follows:

(df
    .withColumn("new_column_1", new_column_1)
    .withColumn("new_column_2", new_column_2)
    .withColumn("new_column_3", new_column_3))

and the result is:

+------+------+------------+------------+------------+
|fruit1|fruit2|new_column_1|new_column_2|new_column_3|
+------+------+------------+------------+------------+
|orange| apple|           0|           0|           0|
|  kiwi|  null|           3|           3|           3|
|  null|banana|           3|           3|           3|
| mango| mango|           1|           1|           1|
|  null|  null|           3|           3|           3|
+------+------+------------+------------+------------+

Using BigDecimal to work with currencies

Primitive numeric types are useful for storing single values in memory. But when dealing with calculation using double and float types, there is a problems with the rounding.It happens because memory representation doesn't map exactly to the value. For example, a double value is supposed to take 64 bits but Java doesn't use all 64 bits.It only stores what it thinks the important parts of the number. So you can arrive to the wrong values when you adding values together of the float or double type.

Converting pixels to dp

You should use dp just as you would pixels. That's all they are; display independent pixels. Use the same numbers you would on a medium density screen, and the size will be magically correct on a high density screen.

However, it sounds like what you need is the fill_parent option in your layout design. Use fill_parent when you want your view or control to expand to all the remaining size in the parent container.

Undefined behavior and sequence points

C++98 and C++03

This answer is for the older versions of the C++ standard. The C++11 and C++14 versions of the standard do not formally contain 'sequence points'; operations are 'sequenced before' or 'unsequenced' or 'indeterminately sequenced' instead. The net effect is essentially the same, but the terminology is different.

Disclaimer : Okay. This answer is a bit long. So have patience while reading it. If you already know these things, reading them again won't make you crazy.

Pre-requisites : An elementary knowledge of C++ Standard

What are Sequence Points?

The Standard says

At certain specified points in the execution sequence called sequence points, all side effects of previous evaluations shall be complete and no side effects of subsequent evaluations shall have taken place. (§1.9/7)

Side effects? What are side effects?

Evaluation of an expression produces something and if in addition there is a change in the state of the execution environment it is said that the expression (its evaluation) has some side effect(s).

For example:

int x = y++; //where y is also an int

In addition to the initialization operation the value of y gets changed due to the side effect of ++ operator.

So far so good. Moving on to sequence points. An alternation definition of seq-points given by the comp.lang.c author Steve Summit:

Sequence point is a point in time at which the dust has settled and all side effects which have been seen so far are guaranteed to be complete.

What are the common sequence points listed in the C++ Standard ?

Those are:

  • at the end of the evaluation of full expression (§1.9/16) (A full-expression is an expression that is not a subexpression of another expression.)1

    Example :

    int a = 5; // ; is a sequence point here

  • in the evaluation of each of the following expressions after the evaluation of the first expression (§1.9/18) 2

    • a && b (§5.14)
    • a || b (§5.15)
    • a ? b : c (§5.16)
    • a , b (§5.18) (here a , b is a comma operator; in func(a,a++) , is not a comma operator, it's merely a separator between the arguments a and a++. Thus the behaviour is undefined in that case (if a is considered to be a primitive type))
  • at a function call (whether or not the function is inline), after the evaluation of all function arguments (if any) which takes place before execution of any expressions or statements in the function body (§1.9/17).

1 : Note : the evaluation of a full-expression can include the evaluation of subexpressions that are not lexically part of the full-expression. For example, subexpressions involved in evaluating default argument expressions (8.3.6) are considered to be created in the expression that calls the function, not the expression that defines the default argument

2 : The operators indicated are the built-in operators, as described in clause 5. When one of these operators is overloaded (clause 13) in a valid context, thus designating a user-defined operator function, the expression designates a function invocation and the operands form an argument list, without an implied sequence point between them.

What is Undefined Behaviour?

The Standard defines Undefined Behaviour in Section §1.3.12 as

behavior, such as might arise upon use of an erroneous program construct or erroneous data, for which this International Standard imposes no requirements 3.

Undefined behavior may also be expected when this International Standard omits the description of any explicit definition of behavior.

3 : permissible undefined behavior ranges from ignoring the situation completely with unpredictable results, to behaving during translation or program execution in a documented manner characteristic of the environment (with or with- out the issuance of a diagnostic message), to terminating a translation or execution (with the issuance of a diagnostic message).

In short, undefined behaviour means anything can happen from daemons flying out of your nose to your girlfriend getting pregnant.

What is the relation between Undefined Behaviour and Sequence Points?

Before I get into that you must know the difference(s) between Undefined Behaviour, Unspecified Behaviour and Implementation Defined Behaviour.

You must also know that the order of evaluation of operands of individual operators and subexpressions of individual expressions, and the order in which side effects take place, is unspecified.

For example:

int x = 5, y = 6;

int z = x++ + y++; //it is unspecified whether x++ or y++ will be evaluated first.

Another example here.

Now the Standard in §5/4 says

  • 1) Between the previous and next sequence point a scalar object shall have its stored value modified at most once by the evaluation of an expression.

What does it mean?

Informally it means that between two sequence points a variable must not be modified more than once. In an expression statement, the next sequence point is usually at the terminating semicolon, and the previous sequence point is at the end of the previous statement. An expression may also contain intermediate sequence points.

From the above sentence the following expressions invoke Undefined Behaviour:

i++ * ++i; // UB, i is modified more than once btw two SPs
i = ++i;     // UB, same as above
++i = 2;     // UB, same as above
i = ++i + 1; // UB, same as above
++++++i;     // UB, parsed as (++(++(++i)))

i = (i, ++i, ++i); // UB, there's no SP between `++i` (right most) and assignment to `i` (`i` is modified more than once btw two SPs)

But the following expressions are fine:

i = (i, ++i, 1) + 1; // well defined (AFAIK)
i = (++i, i++, i);   // well defined
int j = i;
j = (++i, i++, j*i); // well defined

  • 2) Furthermore, the prior value shall be accessed only to determine the value to be stored.

What does it mean? It means if an object is written to within a full expression, any and all accesses to it within the same expression must be directly involved in the computation of the value to be written.

For example in i = i + 1 all the access of i (in L.H.S and in R.H.S) are directly involved in computation of the value to be written. So it is fine.

This rule effectively constrains legal expressions to those in which the accesses demonstrably precede the modification.

Example 1:

std::printf("%d %d", i,++i); // invokes Undefined Behaviour because of Rule no 2

Example 2:

a[i] = i++ // or a[++i] = i or a[i++] = ++i etc

is disallowed because one of the accesses of i (the one in a[i]) has nothing to do with the value which ends up being stored in i (which happens over in i++), and so there's no good way to define--either for our understanding or the compiler's--whether the access should take place before or after the incremented value is stored. So the behaviour is undefined.

Example 3 :

int x = i + i++ ;// Similar to above

Add a auto increment primary key to existing table in oracle

You can use the Oracle Data Modeler to create auto incrementing surrogate keys.

Step 1. - Create a Relational Diagram

You can first create a Logical Diagram and Engineer to create the Relational Diagram or you can straightaway create the Relational Diagram.

Add the entity (table) that required to have auto incremented PK, select the type of the PK as Integer.

Step 2. - Edit PK Column Property

Get the properties of the PK column. You can double click the name of the column or click on the 'Properties' button.

Column Properties dialog box appears.

Select the General Tab (Default Selection for the first time). Then select both the 'Auto Increment' and 'Identity Column' check boxes.

Step 3. - Additional Information

Additional information relating to the auto increment can be specified by selecting the 'Auto Increment' tab.

  • Start With
  • Increment By
  • Min Value
  • Max Value
  • Cycle
  • Disable Cache
  • Order
  • Sequence Name
  • Trigger Name
  • Generate Trigger

It is usually a good idea to mention the sequence name, so that it will be useful in PL/SQL.

Click OK (Apply) to the Column Properties dialog box.

Click OK (Apply) to the Table Properties dialog box.

Table appears in the Relational Diagram.

How can I reverse a list in Python?

Using slicing, e.g. array = array[::-1], is a neat trick and very Pythonic, but a little obscure for newbies maybe. Using the reverse() method is a good way to go in day to day coding because it is easily readable.

However, if you need to reverse a list in place as in an interview question, you will likely not be able to use built in methods like these. The interviewer will be looking at how you approach the problem rather than the depth of Python knowledge, an algorithmic approach is required. The following example, using a classic swap, might be one way to do it:-

def reverse_in_place(lst):      # Declare a function
    size = len(lst) # Get the length of the sequence
    hiindex = size - 1
    its = size/2 # Number of iterations required
    for i in xrange(0, its): # i is the low index pointer
        temp = lst[hiindex]     # Perform a classic swap
        lst[hiindex] = lst[i]
        lst[i] = temp
        hiindex -= 1 # Decrement the high index pointer
    print "Done!"

# Now test it!!
array = [2, 5, 8, 9, 12, 19, 25, 27, 32, 60, 65, 1, 7, 24, 124, 654]

print array # Print the original sequence
reverse_in_place(array) # Call the function passing the list
print array # Print reversed list

**The result:**
[2, 5, 8, 9, 12, 19, 25, 27, 32, 60, 65, 1, 7, 24, 124, 654]
Done!
[654, 124, 24, 7, 1, 65, 60, 32, 27, 25, 19, 12, 9, 8, 5, 2]

Note that this will not work on Tuples or string sequences, because strings and tuples are immutable, i.e., you cannot write into them to change elements.

Are there best practices for (Java) package organization?

I prefer feature before layers, but I guess it depends on you project. Consider your forces:

  • Dependencies
    Try minimize package dependencies, especially between features. Extract APIs if necessary.
  • Team organization
    In some organizations teams work on features and in others on layers. This influence how code is organized, use it to formalize APIs or encourage cooperation.
  • Deployment and versioning
    Putting everything into a module make deployment and versioning simpler, but bug fixing harder. Splitting things enable better control, scalability and availability.
  • Respond to change
    Well organized code is much simpler to change than a big ball of mud.
  • Size (people and lines of code)
    The bigger the more formalized/standardized it needs to be.
  • Importance/quality
    Some code is more important than other. APIs should be more stable then the implementation. Therefore it needs to be clearly separated.
  • Level of abstraction and entry point
    It should be possible for an outsider to know what the code is about, and where to start reading from looking at the package tree.

Example:

com/company/module
  + feature1/
    - MainClass // The entry point for exploring
    + api/ // Public interface, used by other features
    + domain/
      - AggregateRoot
      + api/ // Internal API, complements the public, used by web
      + impl/
    + persistence/
    + web/               // presentation layer
    + services/ // Rest or other remote API
    + support/
  + feature2/
  + support/ // Any support or utils used by more than on feature
    + io
    + config
    + persistence
    + web

This is just an example. It is quite formal. For example it defines 2 interfaces for feature1. Normally that is not required, but could be a good idea if used differently by different people. You may let the internal API extend the public.

I do not like the 'impl' or 'support' names, but they help separate the less important stuff from the important (domain and API). When it comes to naming I like to be as concrete as possible. If you have a package called 'utils' with 20 classes, move StringUtils to support/string, HttpUtil to support/http and so on.

How to get the number of characters in a string

I tried to make to do the normalization a bit faster:

    en, _ = glyphSmart(data)

    func glyphSmart(text string) (int, int) {
        gc := 0
        dummy := 0
        for ind, _ := range text {
            gc++
            dummy = ind
        }
        dummy = 0
        return gc, dummy
    }

Python module os.chmod(file, 664) does not change the permission to rw-rw-r-- but -w--wx----

Use permission symbols instead of numbers

Your problem would have been avoided if you had used the more semantically named permission symbols rather than raw magic numbers, e.g. for 664:

#!/usr/bin/env python3

import os
import stat

os.chmod(
    'myfile',
    stat.S_IRUSR |
    stat.S_IWUSR |
    stat.S_IRGRP |
    stat.S_IWGRP |
    stat.S_IROTH
)

This is documented at https://docs.python.org/3/library/os.html#os.chmod and the names are the same as the POSIX C API values documented at man 2 stat.

Another advantage is the greater portability as mentioned in the docs:

Note: Although Windows supports chmod(), you can only set the file’s read-only flag with it (via the stat.S_IWRITE and stat.S_IREAD constants or a corresponding integer value). All other bits are ignored.

How to get full REST request body using Jersey?

It does seem you would have to use a MessageBodyReader here. Here's an example, using jdom:

import org.jdom.Document;
import javax.ws.rs.ext.MessageBodyReader;
import javax.ws.rs.ext.Provider;
import javax.ws.rs.ext.MediaType;
import javax.ws.rs.ext.MultivaluedMap;
import java.lang.reflect.Type;
import java.lang.annotation.Annotation;
import java.io.InputStream;

@Provider // this annotation is necessary!
@ConsumeMime("application/xml") // this is a hint to the system to only consume xml mime types
public class XMLMessageBodyReader implements MessageBodyReader<Document> {
  private SAXBuilder builder = new SAXBuilder();

  public boolean isReadable(Class type, Type genericType, Annotation[] annotations, MediaType mediaType) {
    // check if we're requesting a jdom Document
    return Document.class.isAssignableFrom(type);
  }

  public Document readFrom(Class type, Type genericType, Annotation[] annotations, MediaType mediaType, MultivaluedMap<String, String> httpHeaders, InputStream entityStream) {
    try {
      return builder.build(entityStream);
    }
    catch (Exception e) {
      // handle error somehow
    }
  }
}

Add this class to the list of resources your jersey deployment will process (usually configured via web.xml, I think). You can then use this reader in one of your regular resource classes like this:

@Path("/somepath") @POST
public void handleXMLData(Document doc) {
  // do something with the document
}

I haven't verified that this works exactly as typed, but that's the gist of it. More reading here:

Difference between a class and a module

Class

When you define a class, you define a blueprint for a data type. class hold data, have method that interact with that data and are used to instantiate objects.

Module

  • Modules are a way of grouping together methods, classes, and constants.

  • Modules give you two major benefits:

    => Modules provide a namespace and prevent name clashes. Namespace help avoid conflicts with functions and classes with the same name that have been written by someone else.

    => Modules implement the mixin facility.

(including Module in Klazz gives instances of Klazz access to Module methods. )

(extend Klazz with Mod giving the class Klazz access to Mods methods.)

Export tables to an excel spreadsheet in same directory

You can use VBA to export an Access database table as a Worksheet in an Excel Workbook.

To obtain the path of the Access database, use the CurrentProject.Path property.

To name the Excel Workbook file with the current date, use the Format(Date, "yyyyMMdd") method.

Finally, to export the table as a Worksheet, use the DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet method.

Example:

Dim outputFileName As String
outputFileName = CurrentProject.Path & "\Export_" & Format(Date, "yyyyMMdd") & ".xls"
DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel9, "Table1", outputFileName , True
DoCmd.TransferSpreadsheet acExport, acSpreadsheetTypeExcel9, "Table2", outputFileName , True

This will output both Table1 and Table2 into the same Workbook.

How to compare two NSDates: Which is more recent?

You should use :

- (NSComparisonResult)compare:(NSDate *)anotherDate

to compare dates. There is no operator overloading in objective C.

Taking pictures with camera on Android programmatically

For those who came here looking for a way to take pictures/photos programmatically using both Android's Camera and Camera2 API, take a look at the open source sample provided by Google itself here.

Add quotation at the start and end of each line in Notepad++

  • One simple way is replace \n(newline) with ","(double-quote comma double-quote) after this append double-quote in the start and end of file.

example:

      AliceBlue
      AntiqueWhite
      Aqua
      Aquamarine
      Beige
  • Replcae \n with ","

      AliceBlue","AntiqueWhite","Aqua","Aquamarine","Beige

  • Now append "(double-quote) at the start and end

     "AliceBlue","AntiqueWhite","Aqua","Aquamarine","Beige"

If your text contains blank lines in between you can use regular expression \n+ instead of \n

example:

      AliceBlue

      AntiqueWhite
      Aqua

      Aquamarine
      Beige
  • Replcae \n+ with "," (in regex mode)

      AliceBlue","AntiqueWhite","Aqua","Aquamarine","Beige

  • Now append "(double-quote) at the start and end

     "AliceBlue","AntiqueWhite","Aqua","Aquamarine","Beige"

Exception.Message vs Exception.ToString()

In terms of the XML format for log4net, you need not worry about ex.ToString() for the logs. Simply pass the exception object itself and log4net does the rest do give you all of the details in its pre-configured XML format. The only thing I run into on occasion is new line formatting, but that's when I'm reading the files raw. Otherwise parsing the XML works great.

Unit testing void methods?

Presumably the method does something, and doesn't simply return?

Assuming this is the case, then:

  1. If it modifies the state of it's owner object, then you should test that the state changed correctly.
  2. If it takes in some object as a parameter and modifies that object, then your should test the object is correctly modified.
  3. If it throws exceptions is certain cases, test that those exceptions are correctly thrown.
  4. If its behaviour varies based on the state of its own object, or some other object, preset the state and test the method has the correct Ithrough one of the three test methods above).

If youy let us know what the method does, I could be more specific.

What is the difference between i++ and ++i?

Just for the record, in C++, if you can use either (i.e.) you don't care about the ordering of operations (you just want to increment or decrement and use it later) the prefix operator is more efficient since it doesn't have to create a temporary copy of the object. Unfortunately, most people use posfix (var++) instead of prefix (++var), just because that is what we learned initially. (I was asked about this in an interview). Not sure if this is true in C#, but I assume it would be.

Count distinct values

Ok, I deleted my previous answer because finally it was not what willlangford was looking for, but I made my point that maybe we were all misunderstanding the question.

I also thought of the SELECT DISTINCT... thing at first, but it seemed too weird to me that someone needed to know how many people had a different number of pets than the rest... thats why I thought that maybe the question was not clear enough.

So, now that the real question meaning is clarified, making a subquery for this its quite an overhead, I would preferably use a GROUP BY clause.

Imagine you have the table customer_pets like this:

+-----------------------+
|  customer  |   pets   |
+------------+----------+
| customer1  |    2     |
| customer2  |    3     |
| customer3  |    2     |
| customer4  |    2     |
| customer5  |    3     |
| customer6  |    4     |
+------------+----------+

then

SELECT count(customer) AS num_customers, pets FROM customer_pets GROUP BY pets

would return:

+----------------------------+
|  num_customers  |   pets   |
+-----------------+----------+
|        3        |    2     |
|        2        |    3     |
|        1        |    4     |
+-----------------+----------+

as you need.

Remove columns from dataframe where ALL values are NA

Another options with purrr package:

library(dplyr)

df <- data.frame(a = NA,
                 b = seq(1:5),
                 c = c(rep(1, 4), NA))

df %>% purrr::discard(~all(is.na(.)))
df %>% purrr::keep(~!all(is.na(.)))

How can I get Apache gzip compression to work?

First of all go to apache/bin/conf/httpd.conf and make sure that mod_deflate.so is enabled.

Then go to the .htaccess file and add this line:

SetOutputFilter DEFLATE

This should output all the content served as gzipped, i have tried it and it works.

Logarithmic returns in pandas dataframe

The results might seem similar, but that is just because of the Taylor expansion for the logarithm. Since log(1 + x) ~ x, the results can be similar.

However,

I am using the following code to get logarithmic returns, but it gives the exact same values as the pct.change() function.

is not quite correct.

import pandas as pd

df = pd.DataFrame({'p': range(10)})

df['pct_change'] = df.pct_change()
df['log_stuff'] = \
    np.log(df['p'].astype('float64')/df['p'].astype('float64').shift(1))
df[['pct_change', 'log_stuff']].plot();

"string could not resolved" error in Eclipse for C++ (Eclipse can't resolve standard library)

You need to ensure your environment is properly setup in Eclipse so it knows the paths to your includes. Otherwise, it underlines them as not found.

Abstract methods in Java

If you use the java keyword abstract you cannot provide an implementation.

Sometimes this idea comes from having a background in C++ and mistaking the virtual keyword in C++ as being "almost the same" as the abstract keyword in Java.

In C++ virtual indicates that a method can be overridden and polymorphism will follow, but abstract in Java is not the same thing. In Java abstract is more like a pure virtual method, or one where the implementation must be provided by a subclass. Since Java supports polymorphism without the need to declare it, all methods are virtual from a C++ point of view. So if you want to provide a method that might be overridden, just write it as a "normal" method.

Now to protect a method from being overridden, Java uses the keyword final in coordination with the method declaration to indicate that subclasses cannot override the method.

How to Implement DOM Data Binding in JavaScript

So, I decided to throw my own solution in the pot. Here is a working fiddle. Note this only runs on very modern browsers.

What it uses

This implementation is very modern - it requires a (very) modern browser and users two new technologies:

  • MutationObservers to detect changes in the dom (event listeners are used as well)
  • Object.observe to detect changes in the object and notifying the dom. Danger, since this answer has been written O.o has been discussed and decided against by the ECMAScript TC, consider a polyfill.

How it works

  • On the element, put a domAttribute:objAttribute mapping - for example bind='textContent:name'
  • Read that in the dataBind function. Observe changes to both the element and the object.
  • When a change occurs - update the relevant element.

The solution

Here is the dataBind function, note it's just 20 lines of code and could be shorter:

function dataBind(domElement, obj) {
    var bind = domElement.getAttribute("bind").split(":");
    var domAttr = bind[0].trim(); // the attribute on the DOM element
    var itemAttr = bind[1].trim(); // the attribute the object

    // when the object changes - update the DOM
    Object.observe(obj, function (change) {
        domElement[domAttr] = obj[itemAttr];
    });
    // when the dom changes - update the object
    new MutationObserver(updateObj).observe(domElement, {
        attributes: true,
        childList: true,
        characterData: true
    });
    domElement.addEventListener("keyup", updateObj);
    domElement.addEventListener("click",updateObj);
    function updateObj(){
        obj[itemAttr] = domElement[domAttr];
    }
    // start the cycle by taking the attribute from the object and updating it.
    domElement[domAttr] = obj[itemAttr];
}

Here is some usage:

HTML:

<div id='projection' bind='textContent:name'></div>
<input type='text' id='textView' bind='value:name' />

JavaScript:

var obj = {
    name: "Benjamin"
};
var el = document.getElementById("textView");
dataBind(el, obj);
var field = document.getElementById("projection");
dataBind(field,obj);

Here is a working fiddle. Note that this solution is pretty generic. Object.observe and mutation observer shimming is available.

How to get the last N rows of a pandas DataFrame?

Don't forget DataFrame.tail! e.g. df1.tail(10)

How to increase the Java stack size?

I assume you calculated the "depth of 1024" by the recurring lines in the stack trace?

Obviously, the stack trace array length in Throwable seems to be limited to 1024. Try the following program:

public class Test {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

        try {
            System.out.println(fact(1 << 15));
        }
        catch (StackOverflowError e) {
            System.err.println("true recursion level was " + level);
            System.err.println("reported recursion level was " +
                               e.getStackTrace().length);
        }
    }

    private static int level = 0;
    public static long fact(int n) {
        level++;
        return n < 2 ? n : n * fact(n - 1);
    }
}

Comparison of C++ unit test frameworks

I've just pushed my own framework, CATCH, out there. It's still under development but I believe it already surpasses most other frameworks. Different people have different criteria but I've tried to cover most ground without too many trade-offs. Take a look at my linked blog entry for a taster. My top five features are:

  • Header only
  • Auto registration of function and method based tests
  • Decomposes standard C++ expressions into LHS and RHS (so you don't need a whole family of assert macros).
  • Support for nested sections within a function based fixture
  • Name tests using natural language - function/ method names are generated

It also has Objective-C bindings. The project is hosted on Github

Regular expression for first and last name

I have created a custom regex to deal with names:

I have tried these types of names and found working perfect

  1. John Smith
  2. John D'Largy
  3. John Doe-Smith
  4. John Doe Smith
  5. Hector Sausage-Hausen
  6. Mathias d'Arras
  7. Martin Luther King
  8. Ai Wong
  9. Chao Chang
  10. Alzbeta Bara

My RegEx looks like this:

^([a-zA-Z]{2,}\s[a-zA-Z]{1,}'?-?[a-zA-Z]{2,}\s?([a-zA-Z]{1,})?)

MVC4 Model:

[RegularExpression("^([a-zA-Z]{2,}\\s[a-zA-Z]{1,}'?-?[a-zA-Z]{2,}\\s?([a-zA-Z]{1,})?)", ErrorMessage = "Valid Charactors include (A-Z) (a-z) (' space -)") ]

Please note the double \\ for escape characters

For those of you that are new to RegEx I thought I'd include a explanation.

^               // start of line
[a-zA-Z]{2,} // will except a name with at least two characters
\s // will look for white space between name and surname
[a-zA-Z]{1,}    // needs at least 1 Character
\'?-? // possibility of **'** or **-** for double barreled and hyphenated surnames
[a-zA-Z]{2,} // will except a name with at least two characters
\s? // possibility of another whitespace
([a-zA-Z]{1,})? // possibility of a second surname

Detecting scroll direction

This simple code would work: Check the console for results.

let scroll_position = 0;
let scroll_direction;

window.addEventListener('scroll', function(e){
    scroll_direction = (document.body.getBoundingClientRect()).top > scroll_position ? 'up' : 'down';
    scroll_position = (document.body.getBoundingClientRect()).top;
    console.log(scroll_direction);
});

How to create war files

We use Maven (Ant's big brother) for all our java projects, and it has a very nifty WAR plugin. Tutorials and usage can be found there.

It's a lot easier than Ant, fully compatible with Eclipse (use maven eclipse:eclipse to create Eclipse projects) and easy to configure.

Giving height to table and row in Bootstrap

What worked for me was adding a div around the content. Originally i had this. Css applied to the td had no effect.

        <td>
             @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.Message)
        </td>

Then I wrapped the content in a div and the css worked as expected

       <td>
            <div class="largeContent">
                @Html.DisplayFor(modelItem => item.Message)
            </div>
        </td>

What is the difference between HTTP and REST?

No, REST is the way HTTP should be used.

Today we only use a tiny bit of the HTTP protocol's methods – namely GET and POST. The REST way to do it is to use all of the protocol's methods.

For example, REST dictates the usage of DELETE to erase a document (be it a file, state, etc.) behind a URI, whereas, with HTTP, you would misuse a GET or POST query like ...product/?delete_id=22.

Send and receive messages through NSNotificationCenter in Objective-C?

if you're using NSNotificationCenter for updating your view, don't forget to send it from the main thread by calling dispatch_async:

dispatch_async(dispatch_get_main_queue(),^{
    [[NSNotificationCenter defaultCenter] postNotificationName:@"my_notification" object:nil];
});

Get column from a two dimensional array

You have to loop through each element in the 2d-array, and get the nth column.

    function getCol(matrix, col){
       var column = [];
       for(var i=0; i<matrix.length; i++){
          column.push(matrix[i][col]);
       }
       return column;
    }

    var array = [new Array(20), new Array(20), new Array(20)]; //..your 3x20 array
    getCol(array, 0); //Get first column

How to attach a process in gdb

The first argument should be the path to the executable program. So

gdb progname 12271

EditText non editable

android:editable="false" should work, but it is deprecated, you should be using android:inputType="none" instead.

Alternatively, if you want to do it in the code you could do this :

EditText mEdit = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.yourid);
mEdit.setEnabled(false);

This is also a viable alternative :

EditText mEdit = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.yourid);
mEdit.setKeyListener(null);

If you're going to make your EditText non-editable, may I suggest using the TextView widget instead of the EditText, since using a EditText seems kind of pointless in that case.

EDIT: Altered some information since I've found that android:editable is deprecated, and you should use android:inputType="none", but there is a bug about it on android code; So please check this.

Python 'list indices must be integers, not tuple"

The problem is that [...] in python has two distinct meanings

  1. expr [ index ] means accessing an element of a list
  2. [ expr1, expr2, expr3 ] means building a list of three elements from three expressions

In your code you forgot the comma between the expressions for the items in the outer list:

[ [a, b, c] [d, e, f] [g, h, i] ]

therefore Python interpreted the start of second element as an index to be applied to the first and this is what the error message is saying.

The correct syntax for what you're looking for is

[ [a, b, c], [d, e, f], [g, h, i] ]

Arduino COM port doesn't work

Get all inherited classes of an abstract class

This is such a common problem, especially in GUI applications, that I'm surprised there isn't a BCL class to do this out of the box. Here's how I do it.

public static class ReflectiveEnumerator
{
    static ReflectiveEnumerator() { }

    public static IEnumerable<T> GetEnumerableOfType<T>(params object[] constructorArgs) where T : class, IComparable<T>
    {
        List<T> objects = new List<T>();
        foreach (Type type in
            Assembly.GetAssembly(typeof(T)).GetTypes()
            .Where(myType => myType.IsClass && !myType.IsAbstract && myType.IsSubclassOf(typeof(T))))
        {
            objects.Add((T)Activator.CreateInstance(type, constructorArgs));
        }
        objects.Sort();
        return objects;
    }
}

A few notes:

  • Don't worry about the "cost" of this operation - you're only going to be doing it once (hopefully) and even then it's not as slow as you'd think.
  • You need to use Assembly.GetAssembly(typeof(T)) because your base class might be in a different assembly.
  • You need to use the criteria type.IsClass and !type.IsAbstract because it'll throw an exception if you try to instantiate an interface or abstract class.
  • I like forcing the enumerated classes to implement IComparable so that they can be sorted.
  • Your child classes must have identical constructor signatures, otherwise it'll throw an exception. This typically isn't a problem for me.

Calling a method inside another method in same class

Java implicitly assumes a reference to the current object for methods called like this. So

// Test2.java
public class Test2 {
    public void testMethod() {
        testMethod2();
    }

    // ...
}

Is exactly the same as

// Test2.java
public class Test2 {
    public void testMethod() {
        this.testMethod2();
    }

    // ...
}

I prefer the second version to make more clear what you want to do.

How to check if a file exists from a url

You have to use CURL

How to create directory automatically on SD card

Actually I used part of @fiXedd asnwer and it worked for me:

  //Create Folder
  File folder = new File(Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().toString()+"/Aqeel/Images");
  folder.mkdirs();

  //Save the path as a string value
  String extStorageDirectory = folder.toString();

  //Create New file and name it Image2.PNG
  File file = new File(extStorageDirectory, "Image2.PNG");

Make sure that you are using mkdirs() not mkdir() to create the complete path

Android/Java - Date Difference in days

Use jodatime API

Days.daysBetween(start.toDateMidnight() , end.toDateMidnight() ).getDays()

where 'start' and 'end' are your DateTime objects. To parse your date Strings into DateTime objects use the parseDateTime method

There is also an android specific JodaTime library.

How to add conditional attribute in Angular 2?

null removes it:

[attr.checked]="value ? '' : null"

or

[attr.checked]="value ? 'checked' : null"

Hint:

Attribute vs property

When the HTML element where you add this binding does not have a property with the name used in the binding (checked in this case) and also no Angular component or directive is applied to the same element that has an @Input() checked;, then [xxx]="..." can not be used.

See also What is the difference between properties and attributes in HTML?

What to bind to when there is no such property

Alternatives are [style.xxx]="...", [attr.xxx]="...", [class.xxx]="..." depending on what you try to accomplish.

Because <input> only has a checked attribute, but no checked property [attr.checked]="..." is the right way for this specific case.

Attributes can only handle string values

A common pitfall is also that for [attr.xxx]="..." bindings the value (...) is always stringified. Only properties and @Input()s can receive other value types like boolean, number, object, ...

Most properties and attributes of elements are connected and have the same name.

Property-attribute connection

When bound to the attribute the property also only receives the stringified value from the attribute.
When bound to the property the property receives the value bound to it (boolean, number, object, ...) and the attribute again the stringified value.

Two cases where attribute and property names do not match.

Angular was changed since then and knows about these special cases and handles them so that you can bind to <label [for]=" even though no such property exists (same for colspan)

How can I set the max-width of a table cell using percentages?

Old question I know, but this is now possible using the css property table-layout: fixed on the table tag. Answer below from this question CSS percentage width and text-overflow in a table cell

This is easily done by using table-layout: fixed, but a little tricky because not many people know about this CSS property.

table {
  width: 100%;
  table-layout: fixed;
}

See it in action at the updated fiddle here: http://jsfiddle.net/Fm5bM/4/

How to Convert a Text File into a List in Python

This looks like a CSV file, so you could use the python csv module to read it. For example:

import csv

crimefile = open(fileName, 'r')
reader = csv.reader(crimefile)
allRows = [row for row in reader]

Using the csv module allows you to specify how things like quotes and newlines are handled. See the documentation I linked to above.

Simulate user input in bash script

Here is a snippet I wrote; to ask for users' password and set it in /etc/passwd. You can manipulate it a little probably to get what you need:

echo -n " Please enter the password for the given user: "
read userPass
useradd $userAcct && echo -e "$userPass\n$userPass\n" | passwd $userAcct > /dev/null 2>&1 && echo " User account has been created." || echo " ERR -- User account creation failed!"

Reloading the page gives wrong GET request with AngularJS HTML5 mode

I had the same problem with java + angular app generated with JHipster. I solved it with Filter and list of all angular pages in properties:

application.yml:

AngularPageReloadFilter.java

public class AngularPageReloadFilter implements Filter {
    @Override
    public void doFilter(ServletRequest request, ServletResponse response, FilterChain chain) throws IOException, ServletException {
        request.getRequestDispatcher("index.html").forward(request, response);
    }
}

WebConfigurer.java

private void initAngularNonRootRedirectFilter(ServletContext servletContext,
                                              EnumSet<DispatcherType> disps) {
    log.debug("Registering angular page reload Filter");
    FilterRegistration.Dynamic angularRedirectFilter =
            servletContext.addFilter("angularPageReloadFilter",
                    new AngularPageReloadFilter());
    int index = 0;
    while (env.getProperty("angular-pages[" + index + "]") != null) {
        angularRedirectFilter.addMappingForUrlPatterns(disps, true, "/" + env.getProperty("angular-pages[" + index + "]"));
        index++;
    }
    angularRedirectFilter.setAsyncSupported(true);
}

Hope, it will be helpful for somebody.

wp_nav_menu change sub-menu class name?

To change the default "sub-menu" class name, there is simple way. You can just change it in wordpress file.

location : www/project_name/wp-includes/nav-menu-template.php.

open this file and at line number 49, change the name of sub-menu class with your custom class.

Or you can also add your custom class next to sub-menu.

Done.

It worked for me.I used wordpress-4.4.1.

<SELECT multiple> - how to allow only one item selected?

Why don't you want to remove the multiple attribute? The entire purpose of that attribute is to specify to the browser that multiple values may be selected from the given select element. If only a single value should be selected, remove the attribute and the browser will know to allow only a single selection.

Use the tools you have, that's what they're for.

What is a singleton in C#?

E.X You can use Singleton for global information that needs to be injected.

In my case, I was keeping the Logged user detail(username, permissions etc.) in Global Static Class. And when I tried to implement the Unit Test, there was no way I could inject dependency into Controller classes. Thus I have changed my Static Class to Singleton pattern.

public class SysManager
{
    private static readonly SysManager_instance = new SysManager();

    static SysManager() {}

    private SysManager(){}

    public static SysManager Instance
    {
        get {return _instance;}
    }
}

Git says local branch is behind remote branch, but it's not

You probably did some history rewriting? Your local branch diverged from the one on the server. Run this command to get a better understanding of what happened:

gitk HEAD @{u}

I would strongly recommend you try to understand where this error is coming from. To fix it, simply run:

git push -f

The -f makes this a “forced push” and overwrites the branch on the server. That is very dangerous when you are working in team. But since you are on your own and sure that your local state is correct this should be fine. You risk losing commit history if that is not the case.

How to use PHP to connect to sql server

For the following code you have to enable mssql in the php.ini as described at this link: http://www.php.net/manual/en/mssql.installation.php

$myServer = "10.85.80.229";
$myUser = "root";
$myPass = "pass";
$myDB = "testdb";

$conn = mssql_connect($myServer,$myUser,$myPass);
if (!$conn)
{
  die('Not connected : ' . mssql_get_last_message());
}
$db_selected = mssql_select_db($myDB, $conn);
if (!$db_selected)
{
  die ('Can\'t use db : ' . mssql_get_last_message());
}

How can I manually set an Angular form field as invalid?

In my Reactive form, I needed to mark a field as invalid if another field was checked. In ng version 7 I did the following:

    const checkboxField = this.form.get('<name of field>');
    const dropDownField = this.form.get('<name of field>');

    this.checkboxField$ = checkboxField.valueChanges
        .subscribe((checked: boolean) => {
            if(checked) {
                dropDownField.setValidators(Validators.required);
                dropDownField.setErrors({ required: true });
                dropDownField.markAsDirty();
            } else {
                dropDownField.clearValidators();
                dropDownField.markAsPristine();
            }
        });

So above, when I check the box it sets the dropdown as required and marks it as dirty. If you don't mark as such it then it won't be invalid (in error) until you try to submit the form or interact with it.

If the checkbox is set to false (unchecked) then we clear the required validator on the dropdown and reset it to a pristine state.

Also - remember to unsubscribe from monitoring field changes!

Convert dictionary to bytes and back again python?

If you need to convert the dictionary to binary, you need to convert it to a string (JSON) as described in the previous answer, then you can convert it to binary.

For example:

my_dict = {'key' : [1,2,3]}

import json
def dict_to_binary(the_dict):
    str = json.dumps(the_dict)
    binary = ' '.join(format(ord(letter), 'b') for letter in str)
    return binary

def binary_to_dict(the_binary):
    jsn = ''.join(chr(int(x, 2)) for x in the_binary.split())
    d = json.loads(jsn)
    return d

bin = dict_to_binary(my_dict)
print bin

dct = binary_to_dict(bin)
print dct

will give the output

1111011 100010 1101011 100010 111010 100000 1011011 110001 101100 100000 110010 101100 100000 110011 1011101 1111101

{u'key': [1, 2, 3]}

gson throws MalformedJsonException

From my recent experience, JsonReader#setLenient basically makes the parser very tolerant, even to allow malformed JSON data.

But for certain data retrieved from your trusted RESTful API(s), this error might be caused by trailing white spaces. In such cases, simply trim the data would avoid the error:

String trimmed = result1.trim();

Then gson.fromJson(trimmed, T) might work. Surely this only covers a special case, so YMMV.

what do <form action="#"> and <form method="post" action="#"> do?

Action normally specifies the file/page that the form is submitted to (using the method described in the method paramater (post, get etc.))

An action of # indicates that the form stays on the same page, simply suffixing the url with a #. Similar use occurs in anchors. <a href=#">Link</a> for example, will stay on the same page.

Thus, the form is submitted to the same page, which then processes the data etc.

Switch focus between editor and integrated terminal in Visual Studio Code

I configured mine as following since I found ctrl+` is a bit hard to press.

{
  "key": "ctrl+k",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusActiveEditorGroup",
  "when": "terminalFocus"
},
{
  "key": "ctrl+j",
  "command": "workbench.action.terminal.focus",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
}

I also configured the following to move between editor group.

{
  "key": "ctrl+h",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusPreviousGroup",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
},
{
  "key": "ctrl+l",
  "command": "workbench.action.focusNextGroup",
  "when": "!terminalFocus"
}

By the way, I configured Caps Lock to ctrl on Mac from the System Preferences => keyboard =>Modifier Keys.

How to calculate number of days between two given dates?

There is also a datetime.toordinal() method that was not mentioned yet:

import datetime
print(datetime.date(2008,9,26).toordinal() - datetime.date(2008,8,18).toordinal())  # 39

https://docs.python.org/3/library/datetime.html#datetime.date.toordinal

date.toordinal()

Return the proleptic Gregorian ordinal of the date, where January 1 of year 1 has ordinal 1. For any date object d, date.fromordinal(d.toordinal()) == d.

Seems well suited for calculating days difference, though not as readable as timedelta.days.

Use of exit() function

Try using exit(0); instead. The exit function expects an integer parameter. And don't forget to #include <stdlib.h>.

Javascript return number of days,hours,minutes,seconds between two dates

Use moment.js library, for example:

var time = date_future - date_now;
var seconds = moment.duration(time).seconds();
var minutes = moment.duration(time).minutes();
var hours   = moment.duration(time).hours();
var days    = moment.duration(time).days();

How to create a DataFrame of random integers with Pandas?

The recommended way to create random integers with NumPy these days is to use numpy.random.Generator.integers. (documentation)

import numpy as np

How to launch PowerShell (not a script) from the command line

The color and window sizing are defined by the shortcut LNK file. I think I found a way that will do what you need, try this:

explorer.exe "Windows PowerShell.lnk"

The LNK file is in the all user start menu which is located in different places depending whether your on XP or Windows 7. In 7 the LNK file is here:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows PowerShell

How can I get the current time in C#?

How to create a hidden <img> in JavaScript?

You can hide an image using javascript like this:

document.images['imageName'].style.visibility = hidden;

If that isn't what you are after, you need to explain yourself more clearly.

Inherit CSS class

You could also use the !important feature of css to make qualities you do not want to override in the original class. I am using this on my site to keep some of the essential characteristics of the original class while overriding others:

<div class="foo bar">
.foo {
color: blue;
width: 200px  !important;
}

.bar {
color: red;
width: 400px;
}

This will generate a class "foo bar" element that is red and 200px. This is great if you are using the other two classes individually and just want a piece from each class.

How to get the number of characters in a std::string?

For Unicode

Several answers here have addressed that .length() gives the wrong results with multibyte characters, but there are 11 answers and none of them have provided a solution.

The case of Z??????a???????_l?`?¨???????g????????o???¯????????

First of all, it's important to know what you mean by "length". For a motivating example, consider the string "Z??????a???????_l?`?¨???????g????????o???¯????????" (note that some languages, notably Thai, actually use combining diacritical marks, so this isn't just useful for 15-year-old memes, but obviously that's the most important use case). Assume it is encoded in UTF-8. There are 3 ways we can talk about the length of this string:

95 bytes

Finding the lengths using ICU

There are C++ classes for ICU, but they require converting to UTF-16. You can use the C types and macros directly to get some UTF-8 support:

#include <memory>
#include <iostream>
#include <unicode/utypes.h>
#include <unicode/ubrk.h>
#include <unicode/utext.h>

//
// C++ helpers so we can use RAII
//
// Note that ICU internally provides some C++ wrappers (such as BreakIterator), however these only seem to work
// for UTF-16 strings, and require transforming UTF-8 to UTF-16 before use.
// If you already have UTF-16 strings or can take the performance hit, you should probably use those instead of
// the C functions. See: http://icu-project.org/apiref/icu4c/
//
struct UTextDeleter { void operator()(UText* ptr) { utext_close(ptr); } };
struct UBreakIteratorDeleter { void operator()(UBreakIterator* ptr) { ubrk_close(ptr); } };
using PUText = std::unique_ptr<UText, UTextDeleter>;
using PUBreakIterator = std::unique_ptr<UBreakIterator, UBreakIteratorDeleter>;

void checkStatus(const UErrorCode status)
{
    if(U_FAILURE(status))
    {
        throw std::runtime_error(u_errorName(status));
    }
}

size_t countGraphemes(UText* text)
{
    // source for most of this: http://userguide.icu-project.org/strings/utext
    UErrorCode status = U_ZERO_ERROR;
    PUBreakIterator it(ubrk_open(UBRK_CHARACTER, "en_us", nullptr, 0, &status));
    checkStatus(status);
    ubrk_setUText(it.get(), text, &status);
    checkStatus(status);
    size_t charCount = 0;
    while(ubrk_next(it.get()) != UBRK_DONE)
    {
        ++charCount;
    }
    return charCount;
}

size_t countCodepoints(UText* text)
{
    size_t codepointCount = 0;
    while(UTEXT_NEXT32(text) != U_SENTINEL)
    {
        ++codepointCount;
    }
    // reset the index so we can use the structure again
    UTEXT_SETNATIVEINDEX(text, 0);
    return codepointCount;
}

void printStringInfo(const std::string& utf8)
{
    UErrorCode status = U_ZERO_ERROR;
    PUText text(utext_openUTF8(nullptr, utf8.data(), utf8.length(), &status));
    checkStatus(status);

    std::cout << "UTF-8 string (might look wrong if your console locale is different): " << utf8 << std::endl;
    std::cout << "Length (UTF-8 bytes): " << utf8.length() << std::endl;
    std::cout << "Length (UTF-8 codepoints): " << countCodepoints(text.get()) << std::endl;
    std::cout << "Length (graphemes): " << countGraphemes(text.get()) << std::endl;
    std::cout << std::endl;
}

void main(int argc, char** argv)
{
    printStringInfo(u8"Hello, world!");
    printStringInfo(u8"????????????");
    printStringInfo(u8"\xF0\x9F\x90\xBF");
    printStringInfo(u8"Z??????a???????_l?`?¨???????g????????o???¯????????");
}

This prints:

UTF-8 string (might look wrong if your console locale is different): Hello, world!
Length (UTF-8 bytes): 13
Length (UTF-8 codepoints): 13
Length (graphemes): 13

UTF-8 string (might look wrong if your console locale is different): ????????????
Length (UTF-8 bytes): 36
Length (UTF-8 codepoints): 12
Length (graphemes): 10

UTF-8 string (might look wrong if your console locale is different):

Length (UTF-8 codepoints): 1
Length (graphemes): 1

UTF-8 string (might look wrong if your console locale is different): Z??????a???????_l?`?¨???????g????????o???¯????????
Length (UTF-8 bytes): 95
Length (UTF-8 codepoints): 50

Boost.Locale wraps ICU, and might provide a nicer interface. However, it still requires conversion to/from UTF-16.

Why does CreateProcess give error 193 (%1 is not a valid Win32 app)

Let me add an example here:

I'm trying to build Alluxio on windows platform and got the same issue, it's because the pom.xml contains below step:

      <plugin>
        <artifactId>exec-maven-plugin</artifactId>
        <groupId>org.codehaus.mojo</groupId>
        <inherited>false</inherited>
        <executions>
          <execution>
            <id>Check that there are no Windows line endings</id>
            <phase>compile</phase>
            <goals>
              <goal>exec</goal>
            </goals>
            <configuration>
              <executable>${build.path}/style/check_no_windows_line_endings.sh</executable>
            </configuration>
          </execution>
        </executions>
      </plugin>

The .sh file is not executable on windows so the error throws.

Comment it out if you do want build Alluxio on windows.

Correct set of dependencies for using Jackson mapper

Apart from fixing the imports, do a fresh maven clean compile -U. Note the -U option, that brings in new dependencies which sometimes the editor has hard time with. Let the compilation fail due to un-imported classes, but at least you have an option to import them after the maven command.

Just doing Maven->Reimport from Intellij did not work for me.
