How to integrate sourcetree for gitlab

There does not seem to be a way to set up a GitLab account within SourceTree, but if you just clone a remote repo it will use your SSH key correctly.

Edit: After SourceTree 3.0 it is possible to add various non-Atlassian git accounts, including GitLab.

GitHub "fatal: remote origin already exists"

For those of you running into the ever so common error "fatal: remote origin already exists.", or when trying to remove origin and you get "error: could not remove config section remote.origin", what you need to do is to set the origin manually.

Window's POSH~Git for Windows PowerShell (and GitHub for Windows' app) has a problem with this.

I ran into this, like I do so often, again when setting up my octopress. So, here's how I got it working.

First, check your remotes:

C:\gd\code\octopress [source +2 ~3 -0 !]> git remote -v
octopress       https://github.com/imathis/octopress.git (fetch)
octopress       https://github.com/imathis/octopress.git (push)
origin

You'll first note that my origin has no url. Any attempt to remove it, rename it, etc all fails.

So, change the url manually:

git remote set-url --add origin https://github.com/eduncan911/eduncan911.github.io.git

Then you can confirm it worked by running git remote -v again:

C:\gd\code\octopress [source +2 ~3 -0 !]> git remote -v
octopress       https://github.com/imathis/octopress.git (fetch)
octopress       https://github.com/imathis/octopress.git (push)
origin  https://github.com/eduncan911/eduncan911.github.io.git (fetch)
origin  https://github.com/eduncan911/eduncan911.github.io.git (push)

This has fixed dozens of git repos I've had issues with, GitHub, BitBucket GitLab, etc.

Caesar Cipher Function in Python

Using some ascii number tricks:

# See http://ascii.cl/
upper = {ascii:chr(ascii) for ascii in range(65,91)}
lower = {ascii:chr(ascii) for ascii in range(97,123)}
digit = {ascii:chr(ascii) for ascii in range(48,58)}

def ceasar(s, k):
    for c in s:
        o = ord(c)
        # Do not change symbols and digits
        if (o not in upper and o not in lower) or o in digit:
            yield o
        else:
            # If it's in the upper case and
            # that the rotation is within the uppercase
            if o in upper and o + k % 26 in upper:
                yield o + k % 26
            # If it's in the lower case and
            # that the rotation is within the lowercase
            elif o in lower and o + k % 26 in lower:
                yield o + k % 26
            # Otherwise move back 26 spaces after rotation.
            else: # alphabet.
                yield o + k % 26 -26

x = (''.join(map(chr, ceasar(s, k))))
print (x)

What does += mean in Python?

a += b is essentially the same as a = a + b, except that:

  • + always returns a newly allocated object, but += should (but doesn't have to) modify the object in-place if it's mutable (e.g. list or dict, but int and str are immutable).

  • In a = a + b, a is evaluated twice.

  • Python: Simple Statements

    • A simple statement is comprised within a single logical line.

If this is the first time you encounter the += operator, you may wonder why it matters that it may modify the object in-place instead of building a new one. Here is an example:

# two variables referring to the same list
>>> list1 = []
>>> list2 = list1

# += modifies the object pointed to by list1 and list2
>>> list1 += [0]
>>> list1, list2
([0], [0])

# + creates a new, independent object
>>> list1 = []
>>> list2 = list1
>>> list1 = list1 + [0]
>>> list1, list2
([0], [])

How can I properly handle 404 in ASP.NET MVC?

I've investigated A LOT on how to properly manage 404s in MVC (specifically MVC3), and this, IMHO is the best solution I've come up with:

In global.asax:

public class MvcApplication : HttpApplication
{
    protected void Application_EndRequest()
    {
        if (Context.Response.StatusCode == 404)
        {
            Response.Clear();

            var rd = new RouteData();
            rd.DataTokens["area"] = "AreaName"; // In case controller is in another area
            rd.Values["controller"] = "Errors";
            rd.Values["action"] = "NotFound";

            IController c = new ErrorsController();
            c.Execute(new RequestContext(new HttpContextWrapper(Context), rd));
        }
    }
}

ErrorsController:

public sealed class ErrorsController : Controller
{
    public ActionResult NotFound()
    {
        ActionResult result;

        object model = Request.Url.PathAndQuery;

        if (!Request.IsAjaxRequest())
            result = View(model);
        else
            result = PartialView("_NotFound", model);

        return result;
    }
}

(Optional)

Explanation:

AFAIK, there are 6 different cases that an ASP.NET MVC3 apps can generate 404s.

(Automatically generated by ASP.NET Framework:)

(1) An URL does not find a match in the route table.

(Automatically generated by ASP.NET MVC Framework:)

(2) An URL finds a match in the route table, but specifies a non-existent controller.

(3) An URL finds a match in the route table, but specifies a non-existant action.

(Manually generated:)

(4) An action returns an HttpNotFoundResult by using the method HttpNotFound().

(5) An action throws an HttpException with the status code 404.

(6) An actions manually modifies the Response.StatusCode property to 404.

Normally, you want to accomplish 3 objectives:

(1) Show a custom 404 error page to the user.

(2) Maintain the 404 status code on the client response (specially important for SEO).

(3) Send the response directly, without involving a 302 redirection.

There are various ways to try to accomplish this:

(1)

<system.web>
    <customErrors mode="On">
        <error statusCode="404" redirect="~/Errors/NotFound"/>
    </customError>
</system.web>

Problems with this solution:

  1. Does not comply with objective (1) in cases (1), (4), (6).
  2. Does not comply with objective (2) automatically. It must be programmed manually.
  3. Does not comply with objective (3).

(2)

<system.webServer>
    <httpErrors errorMode="Custom">
        <remove statusCode="404"/>
        <error statusCode="404" path="App/Errors/NotFound" responseMode="ExecuteURL"/>
    </httpErrors>
</system.webServer>

Problems with this solution:

  1. Only works on IIS 7+.
  2. Does not comply with objective (1) in cases (2), (3), (5).
  3. Does not comply with objective (2) automatically. It must be programmed manually.

(3)

<system.webServer>
    <httpErrors errorMode="Custom" existingResponse="Replace">
        <remove statusCode="404"/>
        <error statusCode="404" path="App/Errors/NotFound" responseMode="ExecuteURL"/>
    </httpErrors>
</system.webServer>

Problems with this solution:

  1. Only works on IIS 7+.
  2. Does not comply with objective (2) automatically. It must be programmed manually.
  3. It obscures application level http exceptions. E.g. can't use customErrors section, System.Web.Mvc.HandleErrorAttribute, etc. It can't only show generic error pages.

(4)

<system.web>
    <customErrors mode="On">
        <error statusCode="404" redirect="~/Errors/NotFound"/>
    </customError>
</system.web>

and

<system.webServer>
    <httpErrors errorMode="Custom">
        <remove statusCode="404"/>
        <error statusCode="404" path="App/Errors/NotFound" responseMode="ExecuteURL"/>
    </httpErrors>
</system.webServer>

Problems with this solution:

  1. Only works on IIS 7+.
  2. Does not comply with objective (2) automatically. It must be programmed manually.
  3. Does not comply with objective (3) in cases (2), (3), (5).

People that have troubled with this before even tried to create their own libraries (see http://aboutcode.net/2011/02/26/handling-not-found-with-asp-net-mvc3.html). But the previous solution seems to cover all the cases without the complexity of using an external library.

How to check if a String is numeric in Java

I modified CraigTP's solution to accept scientific notation and both dot and comma as decimal separators as well

^-?\d+([,\.]\d+)?([eE]-?\d+)?$

example

var re = new RegExp("^-?\d+([,\.]\d+)?([eE]-?\d+)?$");
re.test("-6546"); // true
re.test("-6546355e-4456"); // true
re.test("-6546.355e-4456"); // true, though debatable
re.test("-6546.35.5e-4456"); // false
re.test("-6546.35.5e-4456.6"); // false

Installed SSL certificate in certificate store, but it's not in IIS certificate list

had the same problem.

You need to ensure you are installing on the same server as the one you created the "CSR" file from. Otherwise, it won't have the private keys.

If you got your cert, just ask to re-key, it will ask for a new CSR file. I.e. Go Daddy allows you to re-key, just find the cert, and hit "manage"

I am not expert at this stuff, but this managed to work.

The following untracked working tree files would be overwritten by merge, but I don't care

The only commands that worked for me were:

git fetch --all
git reset --hard origin/{{your branch name}}

Retrieve data from a ReadableStream object?

Little bit late to the party but had some problems with getting something useful out from a ReadableStream produced from a Odata $batch request using the Sharepoint Framework.

Had similar issues as OP, but the solution in my case was to use a different conversion method than .json(). In my case .text() worked like a charm. Some fiddling was however necessary to get some useful JSON from the textfile.

Get only specific attributes with from Laravel Collection

This avoid to load unised attributes, directly from db:

Maybe next you can apply toArray() if you need such format

Your routes.php file needs to be setup correctly.

What I am assuming your current setup is like:

Route::post('/empresas/eliminar/{id}','CompanyController@companiesDelete');

or something. Define a route for the delete method instead.

Route::delete('/empresas/eliminar/{id}','CompanyController@companiesDelete');

Now if you are using a Route resource, the default route name to be used for the 'DELETE' method is .destroy. Define your delete logic in that function instead.

Cannot find firefox binary in PATH. Make sure firefox is installed. OS appears to be: VISTA

For some reason, adding the environment variable didn't work for me.

I was able to specify a path to Firefox in the command line node configuration, as described on this page (grid2).

CSS Div stretch 100% page height

It's simple using a table:

<html>

<head>
    <title>100% Height test</title>
</head>

<body>
    <table style="float: left; height: 100%; width: 200px; border: 1px solid red">
        <tbody>
            <tr>
                <td>Nav area</td>
            </tr>
        </tbody>
    </table>
    <div style="border: 1px solid green;">Content blabla... text
        <br /> text
        <br /> text
        <br /> text
        <br />
    </div>
</body>

</html>

When DIV was introduced, people were so afraid of tables that the poor DIV became the metaphorical hammer.

Python - difference between two strings

You can use ndiff in the difflib module to do this. It has all the information necessary to convert one string into another string.

A simple example:

import difflib

cases=[('afrykanerskojezyczny', 'afrykanerskojezycznym'),
       ('afrykanerskojezyczni', 'nieafrykanerskojezyczni'),
       ('afrykanerskojezycznym', 'afrykanerskojezyczny'),
       ('nieafrykanerskojezyczni', 'afrykanerskojezyczni'),
       ('nieafrynerskojezyczni', 'afrykanerskojzyczni'),
       ('abcdefg','xac')]

for a,b in cases:
    print('{} => {}'.format(a,b))
    for i,s in enumerate(difflib.ndiff(a, b)):
        if s[0]==' ': continue
        elif s[0]=='-':
            print(u'Delete "{}" from position {}'.format(s[-1],i))
        elif s[0]=='+':
            print(u'Add "{}" to position {}'.format(s[-1],i))
    print()

prints:

Change hover color on a button with Bootstrap customization

or can do this...
set all btn ( class name like : .btn- + $theme-colors: map-merge ) styles at one time :

@each $color, $value in $theme-colors {
  .btn-#{$color} {
    @include button-variant($value, $value,
    // modify
    $hover-background: lighten($value, 7.5%),
    $hover-border: lighten($value, 10%),
    $active-background: lighten($value, 10%),
    $active-border: lighten($value, 12.5%)
    // /modify
    );
  }
}

// code from "node_modules/bootstrap/scss/_buttons.scss"

should add into your customization scss file.

How do I center a Bootstrap div with a 'spanX' class?

Incidentally, if your span class is even-numbered (e.g. span8) you can add an offset class to center it – for span8 that would be offset2 (assuming the default 12-column grid), for span6 it would be offset3 and so on (basically, half the number of remaining columns if you subtract the span-number from the total number of columns in the grid).

UPDATE Bootstrap 3 renamed a lot of classes so all the span*classes should be col-md-* and the offset classes should be col-md-offset-*, assuming you're using the medium-sized responsive grid.

I created a quick demo here, hope it helps: http://codepen.io/anon/pen/BEyHd.

How to conditionally take action if FINDSTR fails to find a string

I presume you want to copy C:\OtherFolder\fileToCheck.bat to C:\MyFolder if the existing file in C:\MyFolder is either missing entirely, or if it is missing "stringToCheck".

FINDSTR sets ERRORLEVEL to 0 if the string is found, to 1 if it is not. It also sets errorlevel to 1 if the file is missing. It also prints out each line that matches. Since you are trying to use it as a condition, I presume you don't need or want to see any of the output. The 1st thing I would suggest is to redirect both the normal and error output to nul using >nul 2>&1.

Solution 1 (mostly the same as previous answers)

You can use IF ERRORRLEVEL N to check if the errorlevel is >= N. Or you can use IF NOT ERRORLEVEL N to check if errorlevel is < N. In your case you want the former.

findstr /c:"stringToCheck" "c:\MyFolder\fileToCheck.bat" >nul 2>&1
if errorlevel 1 xcopy "C:\OtherFolder\fileToCheck.bat" "c:\MyFolder"

Solution 2

You can test for a specific value of errorlevel by using %ERRORLEVEL%. You can probably check if the value is equal to 1, but it might be safer to check if the value is not equal to 0, since it is only set to 0 if the file exists and it contains the string.

findstr /c:"stringToCheck" "c:\MyFolder\fileToCheck.bat" >nul 2>&1
if not %errorlevel% == 0 xcopy "C:\OtherFolder\fileToCheck.bat" "c:\MyFolder"

or

findstr /c:"stringToCheck" "c:\MyFolder\fileToCheck.bat" >nul 2>&1
if %errorlevel% neq 0 xcopy "C:\OtherFolder\fileToCheck.bat" "c:\MyFolder"

Solution 3

There is a very compact syntax to conditionally execute a command based on the success or failure of the previous command: cmd1 && cmd2 || cmd3 which means execute cmd2 if cmd1 was successful (errorlevel=0), else execute cmd3 if cmd1 failed (errorlevel<>0). You can use && alone, or || alone. All the commands need to be on the same line. If you need to conditionally execute multiple commands you can use multiple lines by adding parentheses

cmd1 && (
   cmd2
   cmd3
) || (
   cmd4
   cmd5
)

So for your case, all you need is

findstr /c:"stringToCheck" "c:\MyFolder\fileToCheck.bat" >nul 2>&1 || xcopy "C:\OtherFolder\fileToCheck.bat" "c:\MyFolder"

But beware - the || will respond to the return code of the last command executed. In my earlier pseudo code the || will obviously fire if cmd1 fails, but it will also fire if cmd1 succeeds but then cmd3 fails.

So if your success block ends with a command that may fail, then you should append a harmless command that is guaranteed to succeed. I like to use (CALL ), which is harmless, and always succeeds. It also is handy that it sets the ERRORLEVEL to 0. There is a corollary (CALL) that always fails and sets ERRORLEVEL to 1.

What is the "-->" operator in C/C++?

Utterly geek, but I will be using this:

#define as ;while

    int n = atoi(argv[1]);
    do printf("n is %d\n", n) as ( n --> 0);
    return 0;
}

Count immediate child div elements using jQuery

$("#foo > div")

selects all divs that are immediate descendants of #foo
once you have the set of children you can either use the size function:

$("#foo > div").size()

or you can use

$("#foo > div").length

Both will return you the same result

How best to read a File into List<string>

var logFile = File.ReadAllLines(LOG_PATH);
var logList = new List<string>(logFile);

Since logFile is an array, you can pass it to the List<T> constructor. This eliminates unnecessary overhead when iterating over the array, or using other IO classes.

Actual constructor implementation:

public List(IEnumerable<T> collection)
{
        ...
        ICollection<T> c = collection as ICollection<T>;
        if( c != null) {
            int count = c.Count;
            if (count == 0)
            {
                _items = _emptyArray;
            }
            else {
                _items = new T[count];
                c.CopyTo(_items, 0);
                _size = count;
            }
        }
        ...
}

Should Jquery code go in header or footer?

Put Scripts at the Bottom

The problem caused by scripts is that they block parallel downloads. The HTTP/1.1 specification suggests that browsers download no more than two components in parallel per hostname. If you serve your images from multiple hostnames, you can get more than two downloads to occur in parallel. While a script is downloading, however, the browser won't start any other downloads, even on different hostnames. In some situations it's not easy to move scripts to the bottom. If, for example, the script uses document.write to insert part of the page's content, it can't be moved lower in the page. There might also be scoping issues. In many cases, there are ways to workaround these situations.

An alternative suggestion that often comes up is to use deferred scripts. The DEFER attribute indicates that the script does not contain document.write, and is a clue to browsers that they can continue rendering. Unfortunately, Firefox doesn't support the DEFER attribute. In Internet Explorer, the script may be deferred, but not as much as desired. If a script can be deferred, it can also be moved to the bottom of the page. That will make your web pages load faster.

EDIT: Firefox does support the DEFER attribute since version 3.6.

What is the difference between Task.Run() and Task.Factory.StartNew()

Apart from the similarities i.e. Task.Run() being a shorthand for Task.Factory.StartNew(), there is a minute difference between their behaviour in case of sync and async delegates.

Suppose there are following two methods:

public async Task<int> GetIntAsync()
{
    return Task.FromResult(1);
}

public int GetInt()
{
    return 1;
}

Now consider the following code.

var sync1 = Task.Run(() => GetInt());
var sync2 = Task.Factory.StartNew(() => GetInt());

Here both sync1 and sync2 are of type Task<int>

However, difference comes in case of async methods.

var async1 = Task.Run(() => GetIntAsync());
var async2 = Task.Factory.StartNew(() => GetIntAsync());

In this scenario, async1 is of type Task<int>, however async2 is of type Task<Task<int>>

MySQL: Cloning a MySQL database on the same MySql instance

This statement was added in MySQL 5.1.7 but was found to be dangerous and was removed in MySQL 5.1.23. It was intended to enable upgrading pre-5.1 databases to use the encoding implemented in 5.1 for mapping database names to database directory names. However, use of this statement could result in loss of database contents, which is why it was removed. Do not use RENAME DATABASE in earlier versions in which it is present.

To perform the task of upgrading database names with the new encoding, use ALTER DATABASE db_name UPGRADE DATA DIRECTORY NAME instead: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/alter-database.html

How to replace special characters in a string?

string Output = Regex.Replace(Input, @"([ a-zA-Z0-9&, _]|^\s)", "");

Here all the special characters except space, comma, and ampersand are replaced. You can also omit space, comma and ampersand by the following regular expression.

string Output = Regex.Replace(Input, @"([ a-zA-Z0-9_]|^\s)", "");

Where Input is the string which we need to replace the characters.

Replace whitespaces with tabs in linux

You can also use astyle. I found it quite useful and it has several options too:

Tab and Bracket Options:
   If no indentation option is set, the default option of 4 spaces will be used. Equivalent to -s4 --indent=spaces=4. If no brackets option is set, the
   brackets will not be changed.

   --indent=spaces, --indent=spaces=#, -s, -s#
          Indent using # spaces per indent. Between 1 to 20. Not specifying # will result in a default of 4 spaces per indent.

   --indent=tab, --indent=tab=#, -t, -t#
          Indent using tab characters, assuming that each tab is # spaces long. Between 1 and 20. Not specifying # will result in a default assumption of
          4 spaces per tab.`

What does int argc, char *argv[] mean?

The parameters to main represent the command line parameters provided to the program when it was started. The argc parameter represents the number of command line arguments, and char *argv[] is an array of strings (character pointers) representing the individual arguments provided on the command line.

What is phtml, and when should I use a .phtml extension rather than .php?

.phtml files tell the webserver that those are html files with dynamic content which is generated by the server... just like .php files in a browser behave. So, in productive usage you should experience no difference from .phtml to .php files.

How to use jQuery to show/hide divs based on radio button selection?

The simple jquery source for the same -

$("input:radio[name='group1']").click(function() {
    $('.desc').hide();
    $('#' + $("input:radio[name='group1']:checked").val()).show();
});

In order to make it little more appropriate just add checked to first option --

<div><label><input type="radio" name="group1" value="opt1" checked>opt1</label></div>

remove .desc class from styling and modify divs like --

<div id="opt1" class="desc">lorem ipsum dolor</div>
<div id="opt2" class="desc" style="display: none;">consectetur adipisicing</div>
<div id="opt3" class="desc" style="display: none;">sed do eiusmod tempor</div>

it will really look good any-ways.

how to remove empty strings from list, then remove duplicate values from a list

Amiram's answer is correct, but Distinct() as implemented is an N2 operation; for each item in the list, the algorithm compares it to all the already processed elements, and returns it if it's unique or ignores it if not. We can do better.

A sorted list can be deduped in linear time; if the current element equals the previous element, ignore it, otherwise return it. Sorting is NlogN, so even having to sort the collection, we get some benefit:

public static IEnumerable<T> SortAndDedupe<T>(this IEnumerable<T> input)
{
   var toDedupe = input.OrderBy(x=>x);

   T prev;
   foreach(var element in toDedupe)
   {
      if(element == prev) continue;

      yield return element;
      prev = element;
   }
}

//Usage
dtList  = dtList.Where(s => !string.IsNullOrWhitespace(s)).SortAndDedupe().ToList();

This returns the same elements; they're just sorted.

Tools to generate database tables diagram with Postgresql?

I love schemaspy for schema visualisations. Look at the sample output they provide, and drool. Note the tabs!

You'll need to download the JDBC driver here, then your command should look something like:

java -jar schemaspy-6.0.0-rc2.jar -t pgsql -db database_name -host myhost -u username -p password -o ./schemaspy -dp postgresql-9.3-1100.jdbc3.jar -s public -noads

Sometimes using options -port will not working if your database has diferrent port, so you have to add manual port after host parameter, for example:

java -jar schemaspy-6.0.0-rc2.jar -t pgsql -db database_name -host myhost:myport -u username -p password -o ./schemaspy -dp postgresql-9.3-1100.jdbc3.jar -s public -noads

You'll need to install graphviz as well if you want graphics (apt-get install graphviz for debian based distros).

When should I use Lazy<T>?

I have been considering using Lazy<T> properties to help improve the performance of my own code (and to learn a bit more about it). I came here looking for answers about when to use it but it seems that everywhere I go there are phrases like:

Use lazy initialization to defer the creation of a large or resource-intensive object, or the execution of a resource-intensive task, particularly when such creation or execution might not occur during the lifetime of the program.

from MSDN Lazy<T> Class

I am left a bit confused because I am not sure where to draw the line. For example, I consider linear interpolation as a fairly quick computation but if I don't need to do it then can lazy initialisation help me to avoid doing it and is it worth it?

In the end I decided to try my own test and I thought I would share the results here. Unfortunately I am not really an expert at doing these sort of tests and so I am happy to get comments that suggest improvements.

Description

For my case, I was particularly interested to see if Lazy Properties could help improve a part of my code that does a lot of interpolation (most of it being unused) and so I have created a test that compared 3 approaches.

I created a separate test class with 20 test properties (lets call them t-properties) for each approach.

  • GetInterp Class: Runs linear interpolation every time a t-property is got.
  • InitInterp Class: Initialises the t-properties by running the linear interpolation for each one in the constructor. The get just returns a double.
  • InitLazy Class: Sets up the t-properties as Lazy properties so that linear interpolation is run once when the property is first got. Subsequent gets should just return an already calculated double.

The test results are measured in ms and are the average of 50 instantiations or 20 property gets. Each test was then run 5 times.

Test 1 Results: Instantiation (average of 50 instantiations)

Class      1        2        3        4        5        Avg       %
------------------------------------------------------------------------
GetInterp  0.005668 0.005722 0.006704 0.006652 0.005572 0.0060636 6.72
InitInterp 0.08481  0.084908 0.099328 0.098626 0.083774 0.0902892 100.00
InitLazy   0.058436 0.05891  0.068046 0.068108 0.060648 0.0628296 69.59

Test 2 Results: First Get (average of 20 property gets)

Class      1        2        3        4        5        Avg       %
------------------------------------------------------------------------
GetInterp  0.263    0.268725 0.31373  0.263745 0.279675 0.277775 54.38
InitInterp 0.16316  0.161845 0.18675  0.163535 0.173625 0.169783 33.24
InitLazy   0.46932  0.55299  0.54726  0.47878  0.505635 0.510797 100.00

Test 3 Results: Second Get (average of 20 property gets)

Class      1        2        3        4        5        Avg       %
------------------------------------------------------------------------
GetInterp  0.08184  0.129325 0.112035 0.097575 0.098695 0.103894 85.30
InitInterp 0.102755 0.128865 0.111335 0.10137  0.106045 0.110074 90.37
InitLazy   0.19603  0.105715 0.107975 0.10034  0.098935 0.121799 100.00

Observations

GetInterp is fastest to instantiate as expected because its not doing anything. InitLazy is faster to instantiate than InitInterp suggesting that the overhead in setting up lazy properties is faster than my linear interpolation calculation. However, I am a bit confused here because InitInterp should be doing 20 linear interpolations (to set up it's t-properties) but it is only taking 0.09 ms to instantiate (test 1), compared to GetInterp which takes 0.28 ms to do just one linear interpolation the first time (test 2), and 0.1 ms to do it the second time (test 3).

It takes InitLazy almost 2 times longer than GetInterp to get a property the first time, while InitInterp is the fastest, because it populated its properties during instantiation. (At least that is what it should have done but why was it's instantiation result so much quicker than a single linear interpolation? When exactly is it doing these interpolations?)

Unfortunately it looks like there is some automatic code optimisation going on in my tests. It should take GetInterp the same time to get a property the first time as it does the second time, but it is showing as more than 2x faster. It looks like this optimisation is also affecting the other classes as well since they are all taking about the same amount of time for test 3. However, such optimisations may also take place in my own production code which may also be an important consideration.

Conclusions

While some results are as expected, there are also some very interesting unexpected results probably due to code optimisations. Even for classes that look like they are doing a lot of work in the constructor, the instantiation results show that they may still be very quick to create, compared to getting a double property. While experts in this field may be able to comment and investigate more thoroughly, my personal feeling is that I need to do this test again but on my production code in order to examine what sort of optimisations may be taking place there too. However, I am expecting that InitInterp may be the way to go.

See whether an item appears more than once in a database column

To expand on Solomon Rutzky's answer, if you are looking for a piece of data that shows up in a range (i.e. more than once but less than 5x), you can use

having count(*) > 1 and count(*) < 5

And you can use whatever qualifiers you desire in there - they don't have to match, it's all just included in the 'having' statement. https://webcheatsheet.com/sql/interactive_sql_tutorial/sql_having.php

Random date in C#

I have taken @Joel Coehoorn answer and made the changes he adviced - put the variable out of the method and put all in class. Plus now the time is random too. Here is the result.

class RandomDateTime
{
    DateTime start;
    Random gen;
    int range;

    public RandomDateTime()
    {
        start = new DateTime(1995, 1, 1);
        gen = new Random();
        range = (DateTime.Today - start).Days;
    }

    public DateTime Next()
    {
        return start.AddDays(gen.Next(range)).AddHours(gen.Next(0,24)).AddMinutes(gen.Next(0,60)).AddSeconds(gen.Next(0,60));
    }
}

And example how to use to write 100 random DateTimes to console:

RandomDateTime date = new RandomDateTime();
for (int i = 0; i < 100; i++)
{
    Console.WriteLine(date.Next());
}

Android Studio: Add jar as library?

Put the .jar files in libs folder of the Android project.

Then add this line of code in the app's gradle file:

For Android gradle plugin 3.0 and later, it is better to use this instead:

    implementation fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar'])

How do I position a div at the bottom center of the screen

If you aren't comfortable with using negative margins, check this out.

div {
  position: fixed;
  left: 50%;
  bottom: 20px;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
  margin: 0 auto;
}
<div>
  Your Text
</div>

Especially useful when you don't know the width of the div.

align="center" has no effect.

Since you have position:absolute, I would recommend positioning it 50% from the left and then subtracting half of its width from its left margin.

#manipulate {
    position:absolute;
    width:300px;
    height:300px;
    background:#063;
    bottom:0px;
    right:25%;
    left:50%;
    margin-left:-150px;
}

Gradle to execute Java class (without modifying build.gradle)

There is no direct equivalent to mvn exec:java in gradle, you need to either apply the application plugin or have a JavaExec task.

application plugin

Activate the plugin:

plugins {
    id 'application'
    ...
}

Configure it as follows:

application {
    mainClassName = project.hasProperty("mainClass") ? getProperty("mainClass") : "NULL"
}

On the command line, write

$ gradle -PmainClass=Boo run

JavaExec task

Define a task, let's say execute:

task execute(type:JavaExec) {
   main = project.hasProperty("mainClass") ? getProperty("mainClass") : "NULL"
   classpath = sourceSets.main.runtimeClasspath
}

To run, write gradle -PmainClass=Boo execute. You get

$ gradle -PmainClass=Boo execute
:compileJava
:compileGroovy UP-TO-DATE
:processResources UP-TO-DATE
:classes
:execute
I am BOO!

mainClass is a property passed in dynamically at command line. classpath is set to pickup the latest classes.

If you do not pass in the mainClass property, both of the approaches fail as expected.

$ gradle execute

FAILURE: Build failed with an exception.

* Where:
Build file 'xxxx/build.gradle' line: 4

* What went wrong:
A problem occurred evaluating root project 'Foo'.
> Could not find property 'mainClass' on task ':execute'.

Transparent ARGB hex value

Here is the table of % to hex values:

Example: For 85% white, you would use #D9FFFFFF. Here 85% = "D9" & White = "FFFFFF"

100% — FF
95% — F2
90% — E6

85% — D9

80% — CC
75% — BF
70% — B3
65% — A6
60% — 99
55% — 8C
50% — 80
45% — 73
40% — 66
35% — 59
30% — 4D
25% — 40
20% — 33
15% — 26
10% — 1A
5% — 0D
0% — 00

How is it calculated?

FF is number written in hex mode. That number represent 255 in decimal. For example, if you want 42% to calculate you need to find 42% of numbeer 255 and convert that number to hex. 255 * 0.42 ~= 107 107 to hex is "6B – maleta

IIS URL Rewrite and Web.config

1) Your existing web.config: you have declared rewrite map .. but have not created any rules that will use it. RewriteMap on its' own does absolutely nothing.

2) Below is how you can do it (it does not utilise rewrite maps -- rules only, which is fine for small amount of rewrites/redirects):

This rule will do SINGLE EXACT rewrite (internal redirect) /page to /page.html. URL in browser will remain unchanged.

<system.webServer>
    <rewrite>
        <rules>
            <rule name="SpecificRewrite" stopProcessing="true">
                <match url="^page$" />
                <action type="Rewrite" url="/page.html" />
            </rule>
        </rules>
    </rewrite>
</system.webServer>

This rule #2 will do the same as above, but will do 301 redirect (Permanent Redirect) where URL will change in browser.

<system.webServer>
    <rewrite>
        <rules>
            <rule name="SpecificRedirect" stopProcessing="true">
                <match url="^page$" />
                <action type="Redirect" url="/page.html" />
            </rule>
        </rules>
    </rewrite>
</system.webServer>

Rule #3 will attempt to execute such rewrite for ANY URL if there are such file with .html extension (i.e. for /page it will check if /page.html exists, and if it does then rewrite occurs):

<system.webServer>
    <rewrite>
        <rules>
            <rule name="DynamicRewrite" stopProcessing="true">
                <match url="(.*)" />
                <conditions>
                    <add input="{REQUEST_FILENAME}\.html" matchType="IsFile" />
                </conditions>
                <action type="Rewrite" url="/{R:1}.html" />
            </rule>
        </rules>
    </rewrite>
</system.webServer>

How to check whether dynamically attached event listener exists or not?

What I would do is create a Boolean outside your function that starts out as FALSE and gets set to TRUE when you attach the event. This would serve as some sort of flag for you before you attach the event again. Here's an example of the idea.

// initial load
var attached = false;

// this will only execute code once
doSomething = function()
{
 if (!attached)
 {
  attached = true;
  //code
 }
}

//attach your function with change event
window.onload = function()
{
 var txtbox = document.getElementById('textboxID');

 if (window.addEventListener)
 {
  txtbox.addEventListener('change', doSomething, false);
 }
 else if(window.attachEvent)
 {
  txtbox.attachEvent('onchange', doSomething);
 }
}

How to have a drop down <select> field in a rails form?

You can take a look at the Rails documentation . Anyways , in your form :

  <%= f.collection_select :provider_id, Provider.order(:name),:id,:name, include_blank: true %>

I made a variation of Longpoke's minimalistic approach that also ensures the signatures for both callees and callers:

class EventHook(object):
    '''
    A simple implementation of the Observer-Pattern.
    The user can specify an event signature upon inizializazion,
    defined by kwargs in the form of argumentname=class (e.g. id=int).
    The arguments' types are not checked in this implementation though.
    Callables with a fitting signature can be added with += or removed with -=.
    All listeners can be notified by calling the EventHook class with fitting
    arguments.

    >>> event = EventHook(id=int, data=dict)
    >>> event += lambda id, data: print("%d %s" % (id, data))
    >>> event(id=5, data={"foo": "bar"})
    5 {'foo': 'bar'}

    >>> event = EventHook(id=int)
    >>> event += lambda wrong_name: None
    Traceback (most recent call last):
        ...
    ValueError: Listener must have these arguments: (id=int)

    >>> event = EventHook(id=int)
    >>> event += lambda id: None
    >>> event(wrong_name=0)
    Traceback (most recent call last):
        ...
    ValueError: This EventHook must be called with these arguments: (id=int)

Display exact matches only with grep

You need a more specific expression. Try grep " OK$" or grep "[0-9]* OK". You want to choose a pattern that matches what you want, but won't match what you don't want. That pattern will depend upon what your whole file contents might look like.

You can also do: grep -w "OK" which will only match a whole word "OK", such as "1 OK" but won't match "1OK" or "OKFINE".

$ cat test.txt | grep -w "OK"
1 OK
2 OK
4 OK

Create a basic matrix in C (input by user !)

You need to dynamically allocate your matrix. For instance:

int* mat;
int dimx,dimy;
scanf("%d", &dimx);
scanf("%d", &dimy);
mat = malloc(dimx * dimy * sizeof(int));

This creates a linear array which can hold the matrix. At this point you can decide whether you want to access it column or row first. I would suggest making a quick macro which calculates the correct offset in the matrix.

MySQL - Replace Character in Columns

If you have "something" and need 'something', use replace(col, "\"", "\'") and viceversa.

Loop through properties in JavaScript object with Lodash

For your stated desire to "check if a property exists" you can directly use Lo-Dash's has.

var exists = _.has(myObject, propertyNameToCheck);

deleted object would be re-saved by cascade (remove deleted object from associations)

I just to solve this problem.

  1. I set to null the value of list
  2. I saved the object (It worked)
  3. I set the new data to the object
  4. I resaved the object
  5. It works.!

Create table with jQuery - append

i prefer the most readable and extensible way using jquery.
Also, you can build fully dynamic content on the fly.
Since jquery version 1.4 you can pass attributes to elements which is,
imho, a killer feature. Also the code can be kept cleaner.

$(function(){

        var tablerows = new Array();

        $.each(['result1', 'result2', 'result3'], function( index, value ) {
            tablerows.push('<tr><td>' + value + '</td></tr>');
        });

        var table =  $('<table/>', {
           html:  tablerows
       });

        var div = $('<div/>', {
            id: 'here_table',
            html: table
        });

        $('body').append(div);

    });

Addon: passing more than one "html" tag you've to use array notation like: e.g.

var div = $('<div/>', {
            id: 'here_table',
            html: [ div1, div2, table ]
        });

Text size of android design TabLayout tabs

TabLayout  tab_layout = (TabLayout)findViewById(R.id.tab_Layout_);

private void changeTabsFont() {
    Typeface font = Typeface.createFromAsset(getActivity().getAssets(), "fonts/"+ Constants.FontStyle);
    ViewGroup vg = (ViewGroup) tab_layout.getChildAt(0);
    int tabsCount = vg.getChildCount();
    for (int j = 0; j < tabsCount; j++) {
        ViewGroup vgTab = (ViewGroup) vg.getChildAt(j);
        int tabChildsCount = vgTab.getChildCount();
        for (int i = 0; i < tabChildsCount; i++) {
            View tabViewChild = vgTab.getChildAt(i);
            if (tabViewChild instanceof TextView) {
                ((TextView) tabViewChild).setTypeface(font);
                ((TextView) tabViewChild).setTextSize(15);

            }

Appending an id to a list if not already present in a string

Your list just contains a string. Convert it to integer IDs:

L = ['350882 348521 350166\r\n']

ids = [int(i) for i in L[0].strip().split()]
print(ids)
id = 348521
if id not in ids:
    ids.append(id)
print(ids)
id = 348522
if id not in ids:
    ids.append(id)
print(ids)
# Turn it back into your odd format
L = [' '.join(str(id) for id in ids) + '\r\n']
print(L)

Output:

[350882, 348521, 350166]
[350882, 348521, 350166]
[350882, 348521, 350166, 348522]
['350882 348521 350166 348522\r\n']

Counting repeated elements in an integer array

    String x=null;
    System.out.print("enter the number 10:"+"/n");
    for(int i=0;i<5;i++){
        numbers[i] = input.nextInt();
    }
    System.out.print("Numbers  :  count"+"\n");
    int count=1;
    Arrays.sort(numbers);
    for(int z=0;z<5;z++){
        for(int j=0;j<z;j++){
            if(numbers[z]==numbers[j] & j!=z){
                count=count+1;
            }
        }
        System.out.print(numbers[z]+" - "+count+"\n");
        count=1;

exception.getMessage() output with class name

I think you are wrapping your exception in another exception (which isn't in your code above). If you try out this code:

public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
        throw new RuntimeException("Cannot move file");
    } catch (Exception ex) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null, "Error: " + ex.getMessage());
    }
}

...you will see a popup that says exactly what you want.

However, to solve your problem (the wrapped exception) you need get to the "root" exception with the "correct" message. To do this you need to create a own recursive method getRootCause:

public static void main(String[] args) {
    try {
        throw new Exception(new RuntimeException("Cannot move file"));
    } catch (Exception ex) {
        JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,
                                      "Error: " + getRootCause(ex).getMessage());
    }
}

public static Throwable getRootCause(Throwable throwable) {
    if (throwable.getCause() != null)
        return getRootCause(throwable.getCause());

    return throwable;
}

Note: Unwrapping exceptions like this however, sort of breaks the abstractions. I encourage you to find out why the exception is wrapped and ask yourself if it makes sense.

Force re-download of release dependency using Maven

Deleting the ~/.m2/repository will solve your problem. But, if you still need to keep the old ~/.m2/repository you can just change the maven local path temporarily.

If you are working on IntelliJ just go to Maven Settings and change the Local Repository path to somewhere else. You may need to tick the override checkbox near there.

byte array to pdf

You shouldn't be using the BinaryFormatter for this - that's for serializing .Net types to a binary file so they can be read back again as .Net types.

If it's stored in the database, hopefully, as a varbinary - then all you need to do is get the byte array from that (that will depend on your data access technology - EF and Linq to Sql, for example, will create a mapping that makes it trivial to get a byte array) and then write it to the file as you do in your last line of code.

With any luck - I'm hoping that fileContent here is the byte array? In which case you can just do

System.IO.File.WriteAllBytes("hello.pdf", fileContent);

What's the best way to parse command line arguments?

consoleargs deserves to be mentioned here. It is very easy to use. Check it out:

from consoleargs import command

@command
def main(url, name=None):
  """
  :param url: Remote URL
  :param name: File name
  """
  print """Downloading url '%r' into file '%r'""" % (url, name)

if __name__ == '__main__':
  main()

Now in console:

% python demo.py --help
Usage: demo.py URL [OPTIONS]

URL:    Remote URL

Options:
    --name -n   File name

% python demo.py http://www.google.com/
Downloading url ''http://www.google.com/'' into file 'None'

% python demo.py http://www.google.com/ --name=index.html
Downloading url ''http://www.google.com/'' into file ''index.html''

How do I get the absolute directory of a file in bash?

To get the full path use:

readlink -f relative/path/to/file

To get the directory of a file:

dirname relative/path/to/file

You can also combine the two:

dirname $(readlink -f relative/path/to/file)

If readlink -f is not available on your system you can use this*:

function myreadlink() {
  (
  cd "$(dirname $1)"         # or  cd "${1%/*}"
  echo "$PWD/$(basename $1)" # or  echo "$PWD/${1##*/}"
  )
}

Note that if you only need to move to a directory of a file specified as a relative path, you don't need to know the absolute path, a relative path is perfectly legal, so just use:

cd $(dirname relative/path/to/file)

if you wish to go back (while the script is running) to the original path, use pushd instead of cd, and popd when you are done.

* While myreadlink above is good enough in the context of this question, it has some limitation relative to the readlink tool suggested above. For example it doesn't correctly follow a link to a file with different basename.

There's the TryParse method, which returns a bool indicating if the conversion was successful.

One or more types required to compile a dynamic expression cannot be found. Are you missing references to Microsoft.CSharp.dll and System.Core.dll?

I had the same problem and solved it by removing "Microsoft.CSharp" reference from the project and then added it again.

What is the proper use of an EventEmitter?

Yes, go ahead and use it.

EventEmitter is a public, documented type in the final Angular Core API. Whether or not it is based on Observable is irrelevant; if its documented emit and subscribe methods suit what you need, then go ahead and use it.

As also stated in the docs:

Uses Rx.Observable but provides an adapter to make it work as specified here: https://github.com/jhusain/observable-spec

Once a reference implementation of the spec is available, switch to it.

So they wanted an Observable like object that behaved in a certain way, they implemented it, and made it public. If it were merely an internal Angular abstraction that shouldn't be used, they wouldn't have made it public.

There are plenty of times when it's useful to have an emitter which sends events of a specific type. If that's your use case, go for it. If/when a reference implementation of the spec they link to is available, it should be a drop-in replacement, just as with any other polyfill.

Just be sure that the generator you pass to the subscribe() function follows the linked spec. The returned object is guaranteed to have an unsubscribe method which should be called to free any references to the generator (this is currently an RxJs Subscription object but that is indeed an implementation detail which should not be depended on).

export class MyServiceEvent {
    message: string;
    eventId: number;
}

export class MyService {
    public onChange: EventEmitter<MyServiceEvent> = new EventEmitter<MyServiceEvent>();

    public doSomething(message: string) {
        // do something, then...
        this.onChange.emit({message: message, eventId: 42});
    }
}

export class MyConsumer {
    private _serviceSubscription;

    constructor(private service: MyService) {
        this._serviceSubscription = this.service.onChange.subscribe({
            next: (event: MyServiceEvent) => {
                console.log(`Received message #${event.eventId}: ${event.message}`);
            }
        })
    }

    public consume() {
        // do some stuff, then later...

        this.cleanup();
    }

    private cleanup() {
        this._serviceSubscription.unsubscribe();
    }
}

All of the strongly-worded doom and gloom predictions seem to stem from a single Stack Overflow comment from a single developer on a pre-release version of Angular 2.

About "*.d.ts" in TypeScript

Like @takeshin said .d stands for declaration file for typescript (.ts).

Few points to be clarified before proceeding to answer this post -

  1. Typescript is syntactic superset of javascript.
  2. Typescript doesn't run on its own, it needs to be transpiled into javascript (typescript to javascript conversion)
  3. "Type definition" and "Type checking" are major add-on functionalities that typescript provides over javascript. (check difference between type script and javascript)

If you are thinking if typescript is just syntactic superset, what benefits does it offer - https://basarat.gitbooks.io/typescript/docs/why-typescript.html#the-typescript-type-system

To Answer this post -

As we discussed, typescript is superset of javascript and needs to be transpiled into javascript. So if a library or third party code is written in typescript, it eventually gets converted to javascript which can be used by javascript project but vice versa does not hold true.

For ex -

If you install javascript library -

npm install --save mylib

and try importing it in typescript code -

import * from "mylib";

you will get error.

"Cannot find module 'mylib'."

As mentioned by @Chris, many libraries like underscore, Jquery are already written in javascript. Rather than re-writing those libraries for typescript projects, an alternate solution was needed.

In order to do this, you can provide type declaration file in javascript library named as *.d.ts, like in above case mylib.d.ts. Declaration file only provides type declarations of functions and variables defined in respective javascript file.

Now when you try -

import * from "mylib";

mylib.d.ts gets imported which acts as an interface between javascript library code and typescript project.

            sChildPath = os.path.join(sPath,sChild)
            if os.path.isdir(sChildPath):

MySQL ORDER BY multiple column ASC and DESC

Ok, I THINK I understand what you want now, and let me clarify to confirm before the query. You want 1 record for each user. For each user, you want their BEST POINTS score record. Of the best points per user, you want the one with the best average time. Once you have all users "best" values, you want the final results sorted with best points first... Almost like ranking of a competition.

So now the query. If the above statement is accurate, you need to start with getting the best point/average time per person and assigning a "Rank" to that entry. This is easily done using MySQL @ variables. Then, just include a HAVING clause to only keep those records ranked 1 for each person. Finally apply the order by of best points and shortest average time.

select
      U.UserName,
      PreSortedPerUser.Point,
      PreSortedPerUser.Avg_Time,
      @UserRank := if( @lastUserID = PreSortedPerUser.User_ID, @UserRank +1, 1 ) FinalRank,
      @lastUserID := PreSortedPerUser.User_ID
   from
      ( select
              S.user_id,
              S.point,
              S.avg_time
           from
              Scores S
           order by
              S.user_id,
              S.point DESC,
              S.Avg_Time ) PreSortedPerUser
         JOIN Users U
            on PreSortedPerUser.user_ID = U.ID,
      ( select @lastUserID := 0,
               @UserRank := 0 ) sqlvars
   having
      FinalRank = 1
   order by
      Point Desc,
      Avg_Time

Results as handled by SQLFiddle

Note, due to the inline @variables needed to get the answer, there are the two extra columns at the end of each row. These are just "left-over" and can be ignored in any actual output presentation you are trying to do... OR, you can wrap the entire thing above one more level to just get the few columns you want like

select
      PQ.UserName,
      PQ.Point,
      PQ.Avg_Time
   from
      ( entire query above pasted here ) as PQ

How can I dynamically add a directive in AngularJS?

You have a lot of pointless jQuery in there, but the $compile service is actually super simple in this case:

.directive( 'test', function ( $compile ) {
  return {
    restrict: 'E',
    scope: { text: '@' },
    template: '<p ng-click="add()">{{text}}</p>',
    controller: function ( $scope, $element ) {
      $scope.add = function () {
        var el = $compile( "<test text='n'></test>" )( $scope );
        $element.parent().append( el );
      };
    }
  };
});

You'll notice I refactored your directive too in order to follow some best practices. Let me know if you have questions about any of those.

set div height using jquery (stretch div height)

The correct way to do this is with good-old CSS:

#content{
    width:100%;
    position:absolute;
    top:35px;
    bottom:35px;
}

And the bonus is that you don't need to attach to the window.onresize event! Everything will adjust as the document reflows. All for the low-low price of four lines of CSS!

If <!DOCTYPE> is missing in your HTML content you may experience that the browser gives preference to the "user agent stylesheet" over your custom stylesheet. Adding the doctype fixes this.

How to check syslog in Bash on Linux?

#pragma once vs include guards?

#pragma once allows the compiler to skip the file completely when it occurs again - instead of parsing the file until it reaches the #include guards.

As such, the semantics are a little different, but they are identical if they are used they way they are intended to be used.

Combining both is probably the safest route to go, as in the worst case (a compiler flagging unknown pragmas as actual errors, not just warnings) you would just to have to remove the #pragma's themselves.

When you limit your platforms to, say "mainstream compilers on the desktop", you could safely omit the #include guards, but I feel uneasy on that, too.

OT: if you have other tips/experiences to share on speeding up builds, I'd be curious.

Python script to copy text to clipboard

Test if string begins with a string?

The best methods are already given but why not look at a couple of other methods for fun? Warning: these are more expensive methods but do serve in other circumstances.

The expensive regex method and the css attribute selector with starts with ^ operator

Option Explicit

Public Sub test()

    Debug.Print StartWithSubString("ab", "abc,d")

End Sub

Regex:

Public Function StartWithSubString(ByVal substring As String, ByVal testString As String) As Boolean
    'required reference Microsoft VBScript Regular Expressions
    Dim re As VBScript_RegExp_55.RegExp
    Set re = New VBScript_RegExp_55.RegExp

    re.Pattern = "^" & substring

    StartWithSubString = re.test(testString)

End Function

Css attribute selector with starts with operator

Public Function StartWithSubString(ByVal substring As String, ByVal testString As String) As Boolean
    'required reference Microsoft HTML Object Library
    Dim html As MSHTML.HTMLDocument
    Set html = New MSHTML.HTMLDocument

    html.body.innerHTML = "<div test=""" & testString & """></div>"

maxlength ignored for input type="number" in Chrome

Change your input type to text and use "oninput" event to call function:

<input type="text" oninput="numberOnly(this.id);" class="test_css" maxlength="4" id="flight_number" name="number"/>

Now use Javascript Regex to filter user input and limit it to numbers only:

function numberOnly(id) {
    // Get element by id which passed as parameter within HTML element event
    var element = document.getElementById(id);
    // This removes any other character but numbers as entered by user
    element.value = element.value.replace(/[^0-9]/gi, "");
}

ORDER BY using Criteria API

It's hard to know for sure without seeing the mappings (see @Juha's comment), but I think you want something like the following:

Criteria c = session.createCriteria(Cat.class);
Criteria c2 = c.createCriteria("mother");
Criteria c3 = c2.createCriteria("kind");
c3.addOrder(Order.asc("value"));
return c.list();

How can I sort a dictionary by key?

Python dicts are un-ordered. Usually, this is not a problem since the most common use case is to do a lookup.

The simplest way to do what you want would be to create a collections.OrderedDict inserting the elements in sorted order.

ordered_dict = collections.OrderedDict([(k, d[k]) for k in sorted(d.keys())])

If you need to iterated, as others above have suggested, the simplest way would be to iterate over sorted keys. Examples-

Print values sorted by keys:

# create the dict
d = {k1:v1, k2:v2,...}
# iterate by keys in sorted order
for k in sorted(d.keys()):
    value = d[k]
    # do something with k, value like print
    print k, value

Get list of values sorted by keys:

values = [d[k] for k in sorted(d.keys())]

Link to a section of a webpage

Hashtags at the end of the URL bring a visitor to the element with the ID: e.g.

http://stackoverflow.com/questions/8424785/link-to-a-section-of-a-webpage#answers

Would bring you to where the DIV with the ID 'answers' begins. Also, you can use the name attribute in anchor tags, to create the same effect.

How can I use xargs to copy files that have spaces and quotes in their names?

If you are using Bash, you can convert stdout to an array of lines by mapfile:

find . | grep "FooBar" | (mapfile -t; cp "${MAPFILE[@]}" ~/foobar)

The benefits are:

  • It's built-in, so it's faster.
  • Execute the command with all file names in one time, so it's faster.
  • You can append other arguments to the file names. For cp, you can also:

    find . -name '*FooBar*' -exec cp -t ~/foobar -- {} +

    however, some commands don't have such feature.

The disadvantages:

  • Maybe not scale well if there are too many file names. (The limit? I don't know, but I had tested with 10 MB list file which includes 10000+ file names with no problem, under Debian)

Well... who knows if Bash is available on OS X?

How can I convert an Int to a CString?

If you want something more similar to your example try _itot_s. On Microsoft compilers _itot_s points to _itoa_s or _itow_s depending on your Unicode setting:

CString str;
_itot_s( 15, str.GetBufferSetLength( 40 ), 40, 10 );
str.ReleaseBuffer();

it should be slightly faster since it doesn't need to parse an input format.

Why is Android Studio reporting "URI is not registered"?

I had this problem now - I created a new folder under the layout folder which would contain all the xml relate to my "home" page of my app and then another folder that would relate to my "settings" page as I wanted to organise my xml.

However, android only recognises the layout folder for xmls, not the layout/home or layout/settings folder so that is why it was giving me the error.

Thanks to Mazen Kasser answer, he assisted me in figuring this out.

Constant pointer vs Pointer to constant

const int* ptr;

declares ptr a pointer to const int type. You can modify ptr itself but the object pointed to by ptr shall not be modified.

const int a = 10;
const int* ptr = &a;
*ptr = 5; // wrong
ptr++;    // right

While

int * const ptr;

declares ptr a const pointer to int type. You are not allowed to modify ptr but the object pointed to by ptr can be modified.

int a = 10;
int *const ptr = &a;
*ptr = 5; // right
ptr++;    // wrong

Generally I would prefer the declaration like this which make it easy to read and understand (read from right to left):

int const *ptr; // ptr is a pointer to constant int
int *const ptr; // ptr is a constant pointer to int

RESTful URL design for search

This is not REST. You cannot define URIs for resources inside your API. Resource navigation must be hypertext-driven. It's fine if you want pretty URIs and heavy amounts of coupling, but just do not call it REST, because it directly violates the constraints of RESTful architecture.

See this article by the inventor of REST.

Correct way to integrate jQuery plugins in AngularJS

i have alreay 2 situations where directives and services/factories didnt play well.

the scenario is that i have (had) a directive that has dependency injection of a service, and from the directive i ask the service to make an ajax call (with $http).

in the end, in both cases the ng-Repeat did not file at all, even when i gave the array an initial value.

i even tried to make a directive with a controller and an isolated-scope

only when i moved everything to a controller and it worked like magic.

example about this here Initialising jQuery plugin (RoyalSlider) in Angular JS

MySQL duplicate entry error even though there is no duplicate entry

Less common cases, but keep in mind that according to DOC https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.6/en/innodb-online-ddl-limitations.html

When running an online ALTER TABLE operation, the thread that runs the ALTER TABLE operation will apply an “online log” of DML operations that were run concurrently on the same table from other connection threads. When the DML operations are applied, it is possible to encounter a duplicate key entry error (ERROR 1062 (23000): Duplicate entry), even if the duplicate entry is only temporary and would be reverted by a later entry in the “online log”. This is similar to the idea of a foreign key constraint check in InnoDB in which constraints must hold during a transaction.

How can I tell jaxb / Maven to generate multiple schema packages?

I had to specify different generateDirectory (without this, the plugin was considering that files were up to date and wasn't generating anything during the second execution). And I recommend to follow the target/generated-sources/<tool> convention for generated sources so that they will be imported in your favorite IDE automatically. I also recommend to declare several execution instead of declaring the plugin twice (and to move the configuration inside each execution element):

<plugin>
  <groupId>org.jvnet.jaxb2.maven2</groupId>
  <artifactId>maven-jaxb2-plugin</artifactId>
  <version>0.7.1</version>
  <executions>
    <execution>
      <id>schema1-generate</id>
      <goals>
        <goal>generate</goal>
      </goals>
      <configuration>
        <schemaDirectory>src/main/resources/dir1</schemaDirectory>
        <schemaIncludes>
          <include>shiporder.xsd</include>
        </schemaIncludes>
        <generatePackage>com.stackoverflow.package1</generatePackage>
        <generateDirectory>${project.build.directory}/generated-sources/xjc1</generateDirectory>
      </configuration>
    </execution>
    <execution>
      <id>schema2-generate</id>
      <goals>
        <goal>generate</goal>
      </goals>
      <configuration>
        <schemaDirectory>src/main/resources/dir2</schemaDirectory>
        <schemaIncludes>
          <include>books.xsd</include>
        </schemaIncludes>
        <generatePackage>com.stackoverflow.package2</generatePackage>
        <generateDirectory>${project.build.directory}/generated-sources/xjc2</generateDirectory>
      </configuration>
    </execution>
  </executions>
</plugin>

What requests do browsers' "F5" and "Ctrl + F5" refreshes generate?

It is up to the browser but they behave in similar ways.

I have tested FF, IE7, Opera and Chrome.

F5 usually updates the page only if it is modified. The browser usually tries to use all types of cache as much as possible and adds an "If-modified-since" header to the request. Opera differs by sending a "Cache-Control: no-cache".

CTRL-F5 is used to force an update, disregarding any cache. IE7 adds an "Cache-Control: no-cache", as does FF, which also adds "Pragma: no-cache". Chrome does a normal "If-modified-since" and Opera ignores the key.

If I remember correctly it was Netscape which was the first browser to add support for cache-control by adding "Pragma: No-cache" when you pressed CTRL-F5.

Edit: Updated table

The table below is updated with information on what will happen when the browser's refresh-button is clicked (after a request by Joel Coehoorn), and the "max-age=0" Cache-control-header.

  • Firefox 3.1.6 and 3.0.6 (WINXP)
  • MSIE 8.0.6001 and 7.0.5730.11 (WINXP)
  • Chrome 6.0.472.63 and 1.0.151.48 (WINXP)
  • Opera 10.62 and 9.61 (WINXP)

Notes:

  1. Version 3.0.6 sends I and C, but 3.1.6 opens the page in a new tab, making a normal request with only "I".

  2. Version 10.62 does nothing. 9.61 might do C unless it was a typo in my old table.

Note about Chrome 6.0.472: If you do a forced reload (like CTRL-F5) it behaves like the url is internally marked to always do a forced reload. The flag is cleared if you go to the address bar and press enter.

To add as last row in table

Why is visible="false" not working for a plain html table?

You probably are looking for style="display:none;" which will totally hide your element, whereas the visibility hides it but keeps the screen place it would take...

Can't start hostednetwork

Symptoms
You install an application that uses Microsoft Virtual WiFi technology on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2. However, the application does not work after the computer restarts. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following:

The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

Cause
This issue occurs because the Virtual Wi-Fi filter driver does not create the Virtual Wi-Fi Adapter correctly when a PNP resource rebalance occurs during the startup process.

Notes
1.This issue may occur when a Plug and Play (PNP) resource rebalance occurs during the startup process. The PNP resource rebalance is usually triggered by a change to the hardware configuration.
2.If you open Device Manager when this issue occurs, you notice that the Virtual WiFi Adapter is not created.

If you can't restart your hostednetwork after rebooting the OS ,just Try this hotfix .It fixed my problem. Or try to figure it out by yourself according to the Symptoms and Cause mentioned at the start of my answer.

SQL Server Error : String or binary data would be truncated

This error is usually encountered when inserting a record in a table where one of the columns is a VARCHAR or CHAR data type and the length of the value being inserted is longer than the length of the column.

I am not satisfied how Microsoft decided to inform with this "dry" response message, without any point of where to look for the answer.

Variable length (Dynamic) Arrays in Java

Arrays are fixed size once instantiated. You can use a List instead.

Autoboxing make a List usable similar to an array, you can put simply int-values into it:

List<Integer> list = new ArrayList<Integer>();
list.add(1);
list.add(2);
list.add(3);

How to make a browser display a "save as dialog" so the user can save the content of a string to a file on his system?

There is a new spec called the Native File System API that allows you to do this properly like this:

const result = await window.chooseFileSystemEntries({ type: "save-file" });

There is a demo here, but I believe it is using an origin trial so it may not work in your own website unless you sign up or enable a config flag, and it obviously only works in Chrome. If you're making an Electron app this might be an option though.

Python module for converting PDF to text

I have used pdftohtml with the -xml argument, read the result with subprocess.Popen(), that will give you x coord, y coord, width, height, and font, of every snippet of text in the pdf. I think this is what 'evince' probably uses too because the same error messages spew out.

If you need to process columnar data, it gets slightly more complicated as you have to invent an algorithm that suits your pdf file. The problem is that the programs that make PDF files don't really necessarily lay out the text in any logical format. You can try simple sorting algorithms and it works sometimes, but there can be little 'stragglers' and 'strays', pieces of text that don't get put in the order you thought they would. So you have to get creative.

It took me about 5 hours to figure out one for the pdf's I was working on. But it works pretty good now. Good luck.

What is external linkage and internal linkage?

Basically

  • extern linkage variable is visible in all files
  • internal linkage variable is visible in single file.

Explain: const variables internally link by default unless otherwise declared as extern

  1. by default, global variable is external linkage
  2. but, const global variable is internal linkage
  3. extra, extern const global variable is external linkage

make UITableViewCell selectable only while editing

Have you tried setting the selection properties of your tableView like this:

tableView.allowsMultipleSelection = NO; tableView.allowsMultipleSelectionDuringEditing = YES; tableView.allowsSelection = NO; tableView.allowsSelectionDuringEditing YES;

If you want more fine-grain control over when selection is allowed you can override - (NSIndexPath *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView willSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath in your UITableView delegate. The documentation states:

Return Value An index-path object that confirms or alters the selected row. Return an NSIndexPath object other than indexPath if you want another cell to be selected. Return nil if you don't want the row selected.

You can have this method return nil in cases where you don't want the selection to happen.

How do I install PHP cURL on Linux Debian?

I wrote an article on topis how to [manually install curl on debian linu][1]x.

[1]: http://www.jasom.net/how-to-install-curl-command-manually-on-debian-linux. This is its shortcut:

  1. cd /usr/local/src
  2. wget http://curl.haxx.se/download/curl-7.36.0.tar.gz
  3. tar -xvzf curl-7.36.0.tar.gz
  4. rm *.gz
  5. cd curl-7.6.0
  6. ./configure
  7. make
  8. make install

And restart Apache. If you will have an error during point 6, try to run apt-get install build-essential.

How to increase the clickable area of a <a> tag button?

Big thanks to the contributors to the answers here, it pointed me in the right direction.

For the Bootstrap4 users out there, this worked for me. Sets the a link (tap target) to correct size to pass the Lighthouse Site Audit on mobiles.

can't load package: package .: no buildable Go source files

I had this exact error code and after checking my repository discovered that there were no go files but actually just more directories. So it was more of a red herring than an error for me.

I would recommend doing

go env

and making sure that everything is as it should be, check your environment variables in your OS and check to make sure your shell (bash or w/e ) isn't compromising it via something like a .bash_profile or .bashrc file. good luck.

How to output numbers with leading zeros in JavaScript?

Deleting an object in C++

Your code is indeed using the normal way to create and delete a dynamic object. Yes, it's perfectly normal (and indeed guaranteed by the language standard!) that delete will call the object's destructor, just like new has to invoke the constructor.

If you weren't instantiating Object1 directly but some subclass thereof, I'd remind you that any class intended to be inherited from must have a virtual destructor (so that the correct subclass's destructor can be invoked in cases analogous to this one) -- but if your sample code is indeed representative of your actual code, this cannot be your current problem -- must be something else, maybe in the destructor code you're not showing us, or some heap-corruption in the code you're not showing within that function or the ones it calls...?

BTW, if you're always going to delete the object just before you exit the function which instantiates it, there's no point in making that object dynamic -- just declare it as a local (storage class auto, as is the default) variable of said function!

How to configure Git post commit hook

I want to add to the answers above that it becomes a little more difficult if Jenkins authorization is enabled.

After enabling it I got an error message that anonymous user needs read permission.

I saw two possible solutions:

1: Changing my hook to:

curl --user name:passwd -s http://domain?token=whatevertokenuhave

2: setting project based authorization.

The former solutions has the disadvantage that I had to expose my passwd in the hook file. Unacceptable in my case.

The second works for me. In the global auth settings I had to enable Overall>Read for Anonymous user. In the project I wanted to trigger I had to enable Job>Build and Job>Read for Anonymous.

This is still not a perfect solution because now you can see the project in Jenkins without login. There might be an even better solution using the former approach with http login but I haven't figured it out.

How can I compare two time strings in the format HH:MM:SS?

Try this code for the 24 hrs format of time.

How to check encoding of a CSV file

You can also use python chardet library

# install the chardet library
!pip install chardet

# import the chardet library
import chardet

# use the detect method to find the encoding
# 'rb' means read in the file as binary
with open("test.csv", 'rb') as file:
    print(chardet.detect(file.read()))

How can I change the default Django date template format?

What you need is a date template filter.

e.g:

This returns Joined December 2018

Unable to send email using Gmail SMTP server through PHPMailer, getting error: SMTP AUTH is required for message submission on port 587. How to fix?

Google treat Gmail accounts differently depending on the available user information, probably to curb spammers.

I couldn't use SMTP until I did the phone verification. Made another account to double check and I was able to confirm it.

Change File Extension Using C#

Convert file format to png

 string newfilename = Path.ChangeExtension(filename, ".png");/*Convert file format from jpg to png*/

Use LINQ to get items in one List<>, that are not in another List<>

Klaus' answer was great, but ReSharper will ask you to "Simplify LINQ expression":

var result = peopleList2.Where(p => peopleList1.All(p2 => p2.ID != p.ID));

Python URLLib / URLLib2 POST

u = urllib2.urlopen('http://myserver/inout-tracker', data)
h.request('POST', '/inout-tracker/index.php', data, headers)

Using the path /inout-tracker without a trailing / doesn't fetch index.php. Instead the server will issue a 302 redirect to the version with the trailing /.

Doing a 302 will typically cause clients to convert a POST to a GET request.

mysql update query with sub query

Thanks, I didn't have the idea of an UPDATE with INNER JOIN.

In the original query, the mistake was to name the subquery, which must return a value and can't therefore be aliased.

UPDATE Competition
SET Competition.NumberOfTeams =
(SELECT count(*) -- no column alias
  FROM PicksPoints
  WHERE UserCompetitionID is not NULL
  -- put the join condition INSIDE the subquery :
  AND CompetitionID =  Competition.CompetitionID
  group by CompetitionID
) -- no table alias

should do the trick for every record of Competition.

To be noticed :

The effect is NOT EXACTLY the same as the query proposed by mellamokb, which won't update Competition records with no corresponding PickPoints.

Since SELECT id, COUNT(*) GROUP BY id will only count for existing values of ids,

whereas a SELECT COUNT(*) will always return a value, being 0 if no records are selected.

This may, or may not, be a problem for you.

0-aware version of mellamokb query would be :

Update Competition as C
LEFT join (
  select CompetitionId, count(*) as NumberOfTeams
  from PicksPoints as p
  where UserCompetitionID is not NULL
  group by CompetitionID
) as A on C.CompetitionID = A.CompetitionID
set C.NumberOfTeams = IFNULL(A.NumberOfTeams, 0)

In other words, if no corresponding PickPoints are found, set Competition.NumberOfTeams to zero.

The type 'string' must be a non-nullable type in order to use it as parameter T in the generic type or method 'System.Nullable<T>'

string is a reference type, a class. You can only use Nullable<T> or the T? C# syntactic sugar with non-nullable value types such as int and Guid.

In particular, as string is a reference type, an expression of type string can already be null:

string lookMaNoText = null;

Stretch Image to Fit 100% of Div Height and Width

will the height attribute stretch the image beyond its native resolution? If I have a image with a height of say 420 pixels, I can't get css to stretch the image beyond the native resolution to fill the height of the viewport.

I am getting pretty close results with:

 .rightdiv img {
        max-width: 25vw;
        min-height: 100vh;
    }

the 100vh is getting pretty close, with just a few pixels left over at the bottom for some reason.

How to remove duplicates from Python list and keep order?

If it's clarity you're after, rather than speed, I think this is very clear:

def sortAndUniq(input):
  output = []
  for x in input:
    if x not in output:
      output.append(x)
  output.sort()
  return output

It's O(n^2) though, with the repeated use of not in for each element of the input list.

datetime datatype in java

java.time

The java.time framework built into Java 8 and later supplants both the old date-time classes bundled with the earliest versions of Java and the Joda-Time library. The java.time classes have been back-ported to Java 6 & 7 and to Android.

The Instant class represents a moment on the timeline in UTC with a resolution of nanoseconds.

Instant instant = Instant.now();

Apply an offset-from-UTC (a number of hours and possible minutes and seconds) to get an OffsetDateTime.

ZoneOffset offset = ZoneOffset.of( "-04:00" );
OffsetDateTime odt = OffsetDateTime.ofInstant( instant , offset );

Better yet is applying a full time zone which is an offset plus a set of rules for handling anomalies such as Daylight Saving Time (DST).

ZoneId zoneId = ZoneId.of( "America/Montreal" );
ZonedDateTime zdt = ZonedDateTime.ofInstant( instant , zoneId );

Database

Hopefully the JDBC drivers will be updated to work directly with the java.time classes. Until then we must use the java.sql classes to move date-time values to/from the database. But limit your use of the java.sql classes to the chore of database transit. Do not use them for business logic. As part of the old date-time classes they are poorly designed, confusing, and troublesome.

Use new methods added to the old classes to convert to/from java.time. Look for to… and valueOf methods.

Use the java.sql.Timestamp class for date-time values.

java.sql.Timestamp ts = java.sql.Timestamp.valueOf( instant );

And going the other direction…

Instant instant = ts.toInstant();

For date-time data you virtually always want the TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE data type rather than WITHOUT when designing your table columns in your database.

Simple GUI Java calculator

What you need is something that calculates the result of the infix notated calculation, have a look at the Shunting-Yard Algorithm.

There's an example in C++ on Wikipedia's page, but it shouldn't be too hard to implement it in Java.
And since it's the primary function of your calculator, I would advise you to not grab some codez from the Web in this Case (except all you want to do is building calculator GUIs).

You have not concluded your merge (MERGE_HEAD exists)

I think it's worth mentioning that there are numerous scenarios in which the message You have not concluded your merge (MERGE_HEAD exists) could occur, because many people have probably arrived at this page after searching for said message. The resolution will depend on how you got there.

git status is always a useful starting point.

If you've already merged the contents to your satisfaction and are still getting this message, it could be as simple as doing

git add file
git commit

But again, it really depends on the situation. It's a good idea to understand the basics before attempting anything (same link Terence posted): Git - Basic Merge Conflicts

How to convert Blob to File in JavaScript

This function converts a Blob into a File and it works great for me.

Vanilla JavaScript

function blobToFile(theBlob, fileName){
    //A Blob() is almost a File() - it's just missing the two properties below which we will add
    theBlob.lastModifiedDate = new Date();
    theBlob.name = fileName;
    return theBlob;
}

TypeScript (with proper typings)

public blobToFile = (theBlob: Blob, fileName:string): File => {
    var b: any = theBlob;
    //A Blob() is almost a File() - it's just missing the two properties below which we will add
    b.lastModifiedDate = new Date();
    b.name = fileName;

    //Cast to a File() type
    return <File>theBlob;
}

Usage

var myBlob = new Blob();

//do stuff here to give the blob some data...

var myFile = blobToFile(myBlob, "my-image.png");

case when itemName = 'A' then itemvalue end as A,
case when itemName = 'B' then itemvalue end as B,
case when itemName = 'C' then itemvalue end as C
  from history
) h group by hostid

It produces the expected results in the submitted case.

How to parseInt in Angular.js

Option 1 (via controller):

angular.controller('numCtrl', function($scope, $window) {
   $scope.num = parseInt(num , 10);
}

Option 2 (via custom filter):

app.filter('num', function() {
    return function(input) {
       return parseInt(input, 10);
    }
});

{{(num1 | num) + (num2 | num)}}

Option 3 (via expression):

Declare this first in your controller:

$scope.parseInt = parseInt;

Then:

{{parseInt(num1)+parseInt(num2)}}

Option 4 (from raina77ow)

{{(num1-0) + (num2-0)}}

How do I implement charts in Bootstrap?

I would like to suggest you to use HighCharts. It's just awesome and easy to integrate.

Example:

HTML:

<script src="http://code.highcharts.com/highcharts.js"></script>
<script src="http://code.highcharts.com/modules/exporting.js"></script>

<div id="container" style="min-width: 310px; height: 400px; margin: 0 auto"></div>

Script:

$(function () {
        $('#container').highcharts({
            chart: {
                type: 'column'
            },
            title: {
                text: 'Monthly Average Rainfall'
            },
            subtitle: {
                text: 'Source: WorldClimate.com'
            },
            xAxis: {
                categories: [

How to get the background color code of an element in hex?

There's a bit of a hack for this, since the HTML5 canvas is required to parse color values when certain properties like strokeStyle and fillStyle are set:

var ctx = document.createElement('canvas').getContext('2d');
ctx.strokeStyle = 'rgb(64, 128, 192)';
var hexColor = ctx.strokeStyle;

Convert alphabet letters to number in Python

You can map the alphabet to a list and return the index of each one as per the below :

import string

alphabet=string.ascii_lowercase
#alphabet='abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz'

#Get the character index , ex: e
print(chars.find('e'))
#This will return 4

What is a 'NoneType' object?

It means you're trying to concatenate a string with something that is None.

None is the "null" of Python, and NoneType is its type.

This code will raise the same kind of error:

>>> bar = "something"
>>> foo = None
>>> print foo + bar
TypeError: cannot concatenate 'str' and 'NoneType' objects

How to restart remote MySQL server running on Ubuntu linux?

  1. SSH into the machine. Using the proper credentials and ip address, ssh [email protected]. This should provide you with shell access to the Ubuntu server.
  2. Restart the mySQL service. sudo service mysql restart should do the job.

If your mySQL service is named something else like mysqld you may have to change the command accordingly or try this: sudo /etc/init.d/mysql restart

Java String encoding (UTF-8)

How is this different from the following?

This line of code here:

String newString = new String(oldString.getBytes("UTF-8"), "UTF-8"));

constructs a new String object (i.e. a copy of oldString), while this line of code:

String newString = oldString;

declares a new variable of type java.lang.String and initializes it to refer to the same String object as the variable oldString.

Is there any scenario in which the two lines will have different outputs?

Absolutely:

String newString = oldString;
boolean isSameInstance = newString == oldString; // isSameInstance == true

vs.

String newString = new String(oldString.getBytes("UTF-8"), "UTF-8"));
 // isSameInstance == false (in most cases)
boolean isSameInstance = newString == oldString;

a_horse_with_no_name (see comment) is right of course. The equivalent of

String newString = new String(oldString.getBytes("UTF-8"), "UTF-8"));

is

String newString = new String(oldString);

minus the subtle difference wrt the encoding that Peter Lawrey explains in his answer.

Android Animation Alpha

Might be a little late, but found a lovely solution in the android docs.

//In transition: (alpha from 0 to 0.5)
view.setAlpha(0f);
view.setVisibility(View.VISIBLE);
view.animate()
   .alpha(0.5f)
   .setDuration(400)
   .setListener(null);

//Out transition: (alpha from 0.5 to 0)
view.setAlpha(0.5f)
view.animate()
   .alpha(0f)
   .setDuration(400)
   .setListener(new AnimatorListenerAdapter() {
           @Override
           public void onAnimationEnd(Animator animation) {
           view.setVisibility(View.GONE);
         }
    });

Creating a very simple 1 username/password login in php

Firstly, you need to put session_start(); before any output to the browser, normally at the top of the page. Have a look at the manual.

Second, this won't affect your results, but these lines aren't being used anywhere and should be removed:

$usr = "admin";
$psw = "password";
$username = '$_POST[username]';
$password = '$_POST[password]';

...and the last two lines there wouldn't work, you need to put the quotes inside the square brackets:

$username = $_POST['username'];

If you put session_start() at the top of your page (i.e. before the <html> tag etc), this should work fine.

Return value from exec(@sql)

On the one hand you could use sp_executesql:

exec sp_executesql N'select @rowcount=count(*) from anytable',
                    N'@rowcount int output', @rowcount output;

On the other hand you could use a temporary table:

declare @result table ([rowcount] int);
insert into @result ([rowcount])
exec (N'select count(*) from anytable');
declare @rowcount int = (select top (1) [rowcount] from @result);

Update PHP 7.4

Curly brace access syntax is deprecated since PHP 7.4

Update 2019

Moving on to the best practices of OOPS, @MrTrick's answer must be marked as correct, although my answer provides a hacked solution its not the best method.

Simply iterate its using {}

Example:

$videos{0}->id

This way your object is not destroyed and you can easily iterate through object.

For PHP 5.6 and below use this

$videos{0}['id']

Both array() and the stdClass objects can be accessed using the current() key() next() prev() reset() end() functions.

So, if your object looks like

object(stdClass)#19 (3) {
  [0]=>
  object(stdClass)#20 (22) {
    ["id"]=>
    string(1) "123"
  etc...

Then you can just do;

$id = reset($obj)->id; //Gets the 'id' attr of the first entry in the object

If you need the key for some reason, you can do;

reset($obj); //Ensure that we're at the first element
$key = key($obj);

Hope that works for you. :-) No errors, even in super-strict mode, on PHP 5.4

2022 Update:
After PHP 7.4, using current(), end(), etc functions on objects is deprecated.

In newer versions of PHP, use the ArrayIterator class:

$objIterator = new ArrayIterator($obj);

$id = $objIterator->current()->id; // Gets the 'id' attr of the first entry in the object

$key = $objIterator->key(); // and gets the key

Localhost is just a name given for the loopback, eg its like referring to yourself as "me" ..

To view it from other computers, chances are you need only do http://192.168.1.56 or http://myPcsName if that doesnt work, there is a chance that there is a firewall running on your computer, or the httpd.conf is only listening on 127.0.0.1

How can I include null values in a MIN or MAX?

The effect you want is to treat the NULL as the largest possible date then replace it with NULL again upon completion:

SELECT RecordId, MIN(StartDate), NULLIF(MAX(COALESCE(EndDate,'9999-12-31')),'9999-12-31')
  FROM tmp GROUP BY RecordId

Per your fiddle this will return the exact results you specify under all conditions.

IIS7: Setup Integrated Windows Authentication like in IIS6

Two-stage authentication is not supported with IIS7 Integrated mode. Authentication is now modularized, so rather than IIS performing authentication followed by asp.net performing authentication, it all happens at the same time.

You can either:

  1. Change the app domain to be in IIS6 classic mode...
  2. Follow this example (old link) of how to fake two-stage authentication with IIS7 integrated mode.
  3. Use Helicon Ape and mod_auth to provide basic authentication
