Treating exceptions differently

We often want to get more information when there is an exception. The following configuration has two targets, a file and the console, which filter on whether or not there is any exception info. (EDIT: Jarek has posted about a new method of doing this in vNext.)

The key is to have a wrapper target with xsi:type="FilteringWrapper" condition="length('${exception}')>0"

Having had an experience with both frameworks recently, I thought I can share my views on each frameworks.

I was asked to evaluate the logging frameworks for an existing web application, I narrowed down my choices to NLog (v2.0) and log4net (v1.2.11) after going through various online forums. Here are my findings:

1. Setting/starting up with NLog is dead easy. You go through the Getting started tutorial on their website and you are done. You get a fair idea, how thing might be with nlog. Config file is so intuitive that anyone can understand the config. For example: if you want to set the internal logging on, you set the flag in Nlog config file's header node, which is where you would expect it to be. In log4net, you set different flags in web.config's appSettings section.

2. In log4net, internal logging doesnt output timestamp which is annoying. In Nlog, you get a nice log with timestamps. I found it very useful in my evaluations.

3. Filters in log4net - You better check my this question - log4net filter - how to write AND filter to ignore log messages and if you find an answer/solution for this, please let me know. I understand, there is a workaround for this question, as you can write your own custom filter. But something which is not easily available in log4net.

4. Performance - I logged around 3000 log messages to database using a stored procedure. I used simple for loop (int i=0; i<3000; i++... to log the same message 3000 times. For the writes: log4net AdoAppender took almost double the time than NLog.

5. Log4net doesnt support asynchronous appender.

It was sufficient comparison for me to choose NLog as the logging framework. :)

A few things happening here:

1. I assume you required fs/http, and set the dir variable :)
2. google.com redirects to www.google.com, so you're saving the redirect response's body, not the image
3. the response is streamed. that means the 'data' event fires many times, not once. you have to save and join all the chunks together to get the full response body
4. since you're getting binary data, you have to set the encoding accordingly on response and writeFile (default is utf8)

There are a few misunderstandings in the discussion above.

First, you can always ROLLBACK a transaction... no matter what the state of the transaction. So you only have to check the XACT_STATE before a COMMIT, not before a rollback.

As far as the error in the code, you will want to put the transaction inside the TRY. Then in your CATCH, the first thing you should do is the following:

 IF @@TRANCOUNT > 0
      ROLLBACK TRANSACTION @transaction

Then, after the statement above, then you can send an email or whatever is needed. (FYI: If you send the email BEFORE the rollback, then you will definitely get the "cannot... write to log file" error.)

This issue was from last year, so I hope you have resolved this by now :-) Remus pointed you in the right direction.

As a rule of thumb... the TRY will immediately jump to the CATCH when there is an error. Then, when you're in the CATCH, you can use the XACT_STATE to decide whether you can commit. But if you always want to ROLLBACK in the catch, then you don't need to check the state at all.

You could probably use an inheritance structure although the more I played with this the dirtier I felt.

Fake IE10 to install Visual Studio 2013

Visual Studio 2013 requires Internet Explorer 10. If you try to install it on Windows 7 with IE8 you get the following error This version of Visual Studio requires Internet Explorer 10”. The value that the VS 2013 installer checks is svcVersion in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorerkey on 32-bit Windows and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Internet Explorer on 64-bit Windows. Any value >= 10.0.0.0 makes the installer happy.

Since you mentioned "within their browser" and firefox, if you are using Internet Explorer, you can disable the page header/footer by temporarily setting of the value in the registry, see here for an example. AFAIK I have not heard of a way to do this within other browsers. Both Daniel's and Mickel's answers seems to collide with each other, I guess that there could be a similar setting somewhere in the registry for firefox to remove headers/footers or customize them. Have you checked it out?

Original answer remains, but this is a messy solution:

If you want to change the PYTHONPATH used in a virtualenv, you can add the following line to your virtualenv's bin/activate file:

export PYTHONPATH="/the/path/you/want"

This way, the new PYTHONPATH will be set each time you use this virtualenv.

EDIT: (to answer @RamRachum's comment)

To have it restored to its original value on deactivate, you could add

export OLD_PYTHONPATH="$PYTHONPATH"

before the previously mentioned line, and add the following line to your bin/postdeactivate script.

export PYTHONPATH="$OLD_PYTHONPATH"

I know the question has been answered, but in my case I was trying to send the content of a text file to the Slack Webhook api and for some reason the above answer did not work. Anywho, this is what finally did the trick for me:

here's what I found with my experiments using the built-in

FORMATMESSAGE() function

when you call up sp_addmessage, your message template gets stored into the system table master.dbo.sysmessages (verified on SQLServer 2000).

You must manage addition and removal of template strings from the table yourself, which is awkward if all you really want is output a quick message to the results screen.

The solution provided by Kathik DV, looks interesting but doesn't work with SQL Server 2000, so i altered it a bit, and this version should work with all versions of SQL Server:

If you are seeing(3 messages are hidden by filters. Show all messages.) then click on show all message link in Chrome dev tool console.

Because if this option enabled by mistake the console.log("") message will show but this will in in hidden state.

I made a new custom :pseudo selector for jQuery to test whether an item has one of the following css properties:

1. overflow: [scroll|auto]
2. overflow-x: [scroll|auto]
3. overflow-y: [scroll|auto]

I wanted to find the closest scrollable parent of another element so I also wrote another little jQuery plugin to find the closest parent with overflow.

This solution probably doesn't perform the best, but it does appear to work. I used it in conjunction with the $.scrollTo plugin. Sometimes I need to know whether an element is inside another scrollable container. In that case I want to scroll the parent scrollable element vs the window.

I probably should have wrapped this up in a single plugin and added the psuedo selector as a part of the plugin, as well as exposing a 'closest' method to find the closest (parent) scrollable container.

Anywho....here it is.

If you need to update more than one column, you can either change city each time you execute to a different column name, or list the columns like so:

Using print and JSON.stringify you can simply produce a valid JSON result.
Use --quiet flag to filter shell noise from the output.
Use --norc flag to avoid .mongorc.js evaluation. (I had to do it because of a pretty-formatter that I use, which produces invalid JSON output) Use DBQuery.shellBatchSize = ? replacing ? with the limit of the actual result to avoid paging.

And finally, use tee to pipe the terminal output to a file:

I suggest the following to make sure everything is uninstalled:

sudo apt-get purge mongodb mongodb-clients mongodb-server mongodb-dev

sudo apt-get purge mongodb-10gen

sudo apt-get autoremove

This should also remove your config from

 /etc/mongodb.conf.

If you want to clean up completely and you might also want to remove the data directory

/var/lib/mongodb

This thread is pretty old I suppose, but in case anyone else stumbles across this question... I had to grab a value from the selected row of a table, but I didn't want to show the column that row was from. I used hideCol, but had the same problem as Andy where it looked messy. To fix it (call it a hack) I just re-set the width of the grid.

Since my row widths are automatic, when I reset the width of the table it reset the column widths but excluded the hidden one, so they filled in the gap.

This will split the input (I'm using STDIN here, but your input could easily be a file) on spaces, and then print out the last-but-one field, and then the last field. The $NF variables hold the number of fields found after exploding on spaces.

The benefit of this is that it doesn't matter if what precedes the last two fields changes, as long as you only ever want the last two it'll continue to work.

Try this:

Yes. There is a simple way to remove everything in iPython. In iPython console, just type:

Then system will ask you to confirm. Press y. If you don't want to see this prompt, simply type:

However during the installation it is possible that the user might change the installation folder.

Method 3 : Registry

You can also see the version installed in registry editor.

2. Edit -> Find

3. Search for Java. You will get the registry entries for Java.

4. In the entry with name : DisplayName & DisplayVersion, the installed java version is displayed

A clean approach

You can consider using a very small, dependency-free library like Not. Solves all problems:

You're probably trying to run Python 3 file with Python 2 interpreter. Currently (as of 2019), python command defaults to Python 2 when both versions are installed, on Windows and most Linux distributions.

But in case you're indeed working on a Python 2 script, a not yet mentioned on this page solution is to resave the file in UTF-8+BOM encoding, that will add three special bytes to the start of the file, they will explicitly inform the Python interpreter (and your text editor) about the file encoding.

As Hiren stated, you'll need a file explorer to see your directory. If you're rooted I highly suggest root explorer, otherwise ES File Explorer is a good choice.

There's a way to remove all queues and exchanges without scripts and full reset. You can just delete and re-create a virtual host from admin interface. This will work even for vhost /.

The only thing you'll need to restore is permissions for the newly created vhost.

Make sure you have the URL correct for whatever you are downloading. First of all, URLs with characters like ? and such cannot be parsed and resolved. This will confuse the cmd line and accept any characters that aren't resolved into the source URL name as the file name you are downloading into.

For example:

will download into a file named, ?source=typ_redirect.

As you can see, knowing a thing or two about URLs helps to understand wget.

I am booting from a hirens disk and only had Linux 2.6.1 as a resource (import os is unavailable). The correct syntax that solved my problem downloading an ISO onto the physical hard drive was:

One could figure the correct URL by finding at what point wget downloads into a file named index.html (the default file), and has the correct size/other attributes of the file you need shown by the following command:

Once that URL and source file is correct and it is downloading into index.html, you can stop the download (ctrl + z) and change the output file by using:

after the source url.

In my case this results in downloading an ISO and storing it as a binary file under isofile.iso, which hopefully mounts.

Superclass constructor CAN'T be inherited in extended class. Although it can be invoked in extended class constructor's with super() as the first statement.

All other answers don't quite solve the issue. They print the date formatted as mm/dd/yyyy but the question was regarding MM/dd/yyyy. Notice the subtle difference? MM indicates that a leading zero must pad the month if the month is a single digit, thus having it always be a double digit number.

i.e. whereas mm/dd would be 3/31, MM/dd would be 03/31.

I've created a simple function to achieve this. Notice that the same padding is applied not only to the month but also to the day of the month, which in fact makes this MM/DD/yyyy:

Facelets is a XML based view technology. The & is a special character in XML representing the start of an entity like & which ends with the ; character. You'd need to either escape it, which is ugly:

Unrelated to the concrete problem, comparing booleans with booleans makes little sense when the expression expects a boolean outcome already. I'd get rid of == true:

The first question you need to ask is whether you really need the ID to be random. Sometime, sequential IDs are good enough.

Now, if you do need it to be random, we first note a generated sequence of numbers that contain no duplicates can not be called random. :p Now that we get that out of the way, the fastest way to do this is to have a Hashtable or HashMap containing all the IDs already generated. Whenever a new ID is generated, check it against the hashtable, re-generate if the ID already occurs. This will generally work well if the number of students is much less than the range of the IDs. If not, you're in deeper trouble as the probability of needing to regenerate an ID increases, P(generate new ID) = number_of_id_already_generated / number_of_all_possible_ids. In this case, check back the first paragraph (do you need the ID to be random?).

That error message usually means that either the password we are using doesn't match what MySQL thinks the password should be for the user we're connecting as, or a matching MySQL user doesn't exist (hasn't been created).

The standalone declaration is a way of telling the parser to ignore any markup declarations in the DTD. The DTD is thereafter used for validation only.

As an example, consider the humble <img> tag. If you look at the XHTML 1.0 DTD, you see a markup declaration telling the parser that <img> tags must be EMPTY and possess src and alt attributes. The downside of NULL in C++ is that it is a define for 0. This is a value that can be silently converted to pointer, a bool value, a float/double, or an int.

That is not very type safe and has lead to actual bugs in an application I worked on.

I realize this is a very old post and has some great answers already, but I wanted to make a simple MCVE to demonstrate one such approach and allow new coders a way to quickly see the concept in action.

In this example, we will use 5 files:

1. Main.java - Simply used to start the application and call the first controller.
2. Controller1.java - The controller for the first FXML layout.
3. Controller2.java - The controller for the second FXML layout.
4. Layout1.fxml - The FXML layout for the first scene.
5. Layout2.fxml - The FXML layout for the second scene.

All files are listed in their entirety at the bottom of this post.

The Goal: To demonstrate passing values from Controller1 to Controller2 and vice versa.

The Program Flow:

• The first scene contains a TextField, a Button, and a Label. When the Button is clicked, the second window is loaded and displayed, including the text entered in the TextField.
• Within the second scene, there is also a TextField, a Button, and a Label. The Label will display the text entered in the TextField on the first scene.
• Upon entering text in the second scene's TextField and clicking its Button, the first scene's Label is updated to show the entered text.

This is a very simple demonstration and could surely stand for some improvement, but should make the concept very clear.

The code itself is also commented with some details of what is happening and how.

I had the same Error and my Problem was, that I had my php-file in my encrypted home-directory. And I run my fpm with the www-data user and this user can't read the php-files even if the permissions on the file were right. The solutioin was that I run fpm with the user who owns the home-directory. This can be changed in folowing file:

/etc/php5/fpm/pool.d/www.conf

Difficult question to answer - as with most technology solutions, it really depends on your situation and since you have not described the problem you are trying to solve, how can anyone propose a solution?

You need to test them both to see which of them satisfied your needs.

With that said, MongoDB does not require any expensive hardware. Like any other database solution, it will work better with more CPU and memory but is certainly not a requirement - especially for early development purposes.

Better than all options, you can set your signingConfig to be equals your debug.signingConfig. To do that you just need to do the following:

Python's implementation follows the IEEE-754 standard pretty well, which you can use as a guidance, but it relies on the underlying system it was compiled on, so platform differences may occur. Recently¹, a fix has been applied that allows "infinity" as well as "inf", but that's of minor importance here.

The following sections equally well apply to any language that implements IEEE floating point arithmetic correctly, it is not specific to just Python.

Comparison for inequality

When dealing with infinity and greater-than > or less-than < operators, the following counts:

• any number including +inf is higher than -inf
• any number including -inf is lower than +inf
• +inf is neither higher nor lower than +inf
• -inf is neither higher nor lower than -inf
• any comparison involving NaN is false (inf is neither higher, nor lower than NaN)

Comparison for equality

When compared for equality, +inf and +inf are equal, as are -inf and -inf. This is a much debated issue and may sound controversial to you, but it's in the IEEE standard and Python behaves just like that.

Of course, +inf is unequal to -inf and everything, including NaN itself, is unequal to NaN.

Calculations with infinity

Most calculations with infinity will yield infinity, unless both operands are infinity, when the operation division or modulo, or with multiplication with zero, there are some special rules to keep in mind:

• when multiplied by zero, for which the result is undefined, it yields NaN
• when dividing any number (except infinity itself) by infinity, which yields 0.0 or -0.0².
• when dividing (including modulo) positive or negative infinity by positive or negative infinity, the result is undefined, so NaN.
• when subtracting, the results may be surprising, but follow common math sense:
  • when doing inf - inf, the result is undefined: NaN;
  • when doing inf - -inf, the result is inf;
  • when doing -inf - inf, the result is -inf;
  • when doing -inf - -inf, the result is undefined: NaN.
• when adding, it can be similarly surprising too:
  • when doing inf + inf, the result is inf;
  • when doing inf + -inf, the result is undefined: NaN;
  • when doing -inf + inf, the result is undefined: NaN;
  • when doing -inf + -inf, the result is -inf.
• using math.pow, pow or ** is tricky, as it doesn't behave as it should. It throws an overflow exception when the result with two real numbers is too high to fit a double precision float (it should return infinity), but when the input is inf or -inf, it behaves correctly and returns either inf or 0.0. When the second argument is NaN, it returns NaN, unless the first argument is 1.0. There are more issues, not all covered in the docs.

• math.exp suffers the same issues as math.pow. A solution to fix this for overflow is to use code similar to this:

Notes

Note 1: as an additional caveat, that as defined by the IEEE standard, if your calculation result under-or overflows, the result will not be an under- or overflow error, but positive or negative infinity: 1e308 * 10.0 yields inf.

Note 2: because any calculation with NaN returns NaN and any comparison to NaN, including NaN itself is false, you should use the math.isnan function to determine if a number is indeed NaN.

Note 3: though Python supports writing float('-NaN'), the sign is ignored, because there exists no sign on NaN internally. If you divide -inf / +inf, the result is NaN, not -NaN (there is no such thing).

Note 4: be careful to rely on any of the above, as Python relies on the C or Java library it was compiled for and not all underlying systems implement all this behavior correctly. If you want to be sure, test for infinity prior to doing your calculations.

Your question is hard to understand, but if I'm getting the gist, you simply have some value in your main view that you want to access in a partial being rendered in that view.

If you just render a partial with just the partial name:

A Project Structure window will popup.

Make sure the new library is under the 'project\libs\' folder otherwise you may get a broken link when you save your project source code.

I was getting this exact error when loading an HTML file on the browser that was using a json file from the local directory. In my case, I was able to solve this by creating a simple node server that allowed to server static content. I left the code for this at this other answer.

You can copy the files into an appropriately named subdirectory directory of the data folder as long as it is the EXACT same version of mySQL and you have retained all of the associated files in that directory. If you don't have all the files, I'm pretty sure you're going to have issues.

Play a bit with the timeout argument in Future#get() method, e.g. increase it to 5 and you'll see that the thread finishes. You can intercept the timeout in the catch (TimeoutException e) block.

Update: to clarify a conceptual misunderstanding, the sleep() is not required. It is just used for SSCCE/demonstration purposes. Just do your long running task right there in place of sleep(). Inside your long running task, you should be checking if the thread is not interrupted as follows:

Don't use "source", it's designed to run a small number of sql queries and display the output, not to import large databases.

I use Wamp Developer (not XAMPP) but it should be the same.

1. Make sure MySQL is running.
2. Create your database via phpMyAdmin or the MySQL shell.
3. Then, run cmd.exe, and change to the directory your sql file is located in.
4. Execute: mysql -u root -p database_name_here < dump_file_name_here.sql
5. Substitute in your database name and dump file name.
6. Enter your MySQL root account password when prompted (if no password set, remove the "-p" switch).

This assumes that mysql.exe can be located via the environmental path, and that sql file is located in the directory you are running this from. Otherwise, use full paths.

Found out that adding to the VB Module behind the spreadsheet does not actually register as a Macro.

So here is the solution:

1. Press ALT + F11
2. Click Insert > Module
3. Paste the following into the window:

In my case, the backup file was compressed, but the file extension didn't indicate this, didn't end in .zip, .tgz, etc. Once I decompressed my backup file I was able to import it.

I had the same problem, the solution for me is the following.

I had only install the junit.jar file from the web, but this library related with the hacrest-core.jar When I downloaded the hacrest-core.jar file and added it in my project everything works fine.

You can use new Date().getTime() for getting timestamps. Then you can calculate the difference between end and start and finally transform the timestamp which is ms into s.

I tried using MP4Box for this task, but it couldn't handle the M4V I was dealing with. I had success embedding the SRT as soft subtitles with ffmpeg with the following command line:

SHTML is a file extension that lets the web server know the file should be processed as using Server Side Includes (SSI).

I had loads of trouble with this too. I have data and labels in separate arrays then I reinitialise the chart data. I added the line.destroy(); as suggested above which has done the trick

The quintessential example of this is an array of pointers to structs or objects (that are mutable).

A shallow copy copies the array and maintains references to the original objects.

A deep copy will copy (clone) the objects too so they bear no relation to the original. Implicit in this is that the object themselves are deep copied. This is where it gets hard because there's no real way to know if something was deep copied or not.

The copy constructor is used to initilize the new object with the previously created object of the same class. By default compiler wrote a shallow copy. Shallow copy works fine when dynamic memory allocation is not involved because when dynamic memory allocation is involved then both objects will points towards the same memory location in a heap, Therefore to remove this problem we wrote deep copy so both objects have their own copy of attributes in a memory.

I know this is bad.. But I have been in hard situation where it is impossible to put this back to controller or model.

My solution is to call a function on model. It can be do inside a view. But you have to make sure the model has been loaded to your controller first.

Say your model main_model, you can call function on the model like this on your view : $this->main_model->your_function();

There are a couple of answers using SoapHandlers in this thread. You should know that SoapHandlers modify the message if writeTo(out) is called.

Calling SOAPMessage's writeTo(out) method automatically calls saveChanges() method also. As a result all attached MTOM/XOP binary data in a message is lost.

I am not sure why this is happening, but it seems to be a documented feature.

In addition, this method marks the point at which the data from all constituent AttachmentPart objects are pulled into the message.

Add JSTL library as dependency to your project (javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.core.Config is a part of this package). For example, if you were using Gradle, you could write in a build.gradle:

Here's a one-liner that removes all objects except for functions:

rm(list = setdiff(ls(), lsf.str()))

It uses setdiff to find the subset of objects in the global environment (as returned by ls()) that don't have mode function (as returned by lsf.str())

There isn't really a formal manual, because there's no single style or standard.

So long as you understand the rules of identifier naming you can use whatever you like.

In practice, I find it easier to use lower_case_underscore_separated_identifiers because it isn't necessary to "Double Quote" them everywhere to preserve case, spaces, etc.

If you wanted to name your tables and functions "@MyA??! ""betty"" Shard$42" you'd be free to do that, though it'd be pain to type everywhere.

The main things to understand are:

• Unless double-quoted, identifiers are case-folded to lower-case, so MyTable, MYTABLE and mytable are all the same thing, but "MYTABLE" and "MyTable" are different;

• Unless double-quoted:

  SQL identifiers and key words must begin with a letter (a-z, but also letters with diacritical marks and non-Latin letters) or an underscore (_). Subsequent characters in an identifier or key word can be letters, underscores, digits (0-9), or dollar signs ($).

• You must double-quote keywords if you wish to use them as identifiers.

In practice I strongly recommend that you do not use keywords as identifiers. At least avoid reserved words. Just because you can name a table "with" doesn't mean you should.

You need to install a plugin, There is a free one from the eclipse foundation called the Web Tools Platform. It has all the development functionality that you'll need.

You can get the Java EE Edition of eclipse with has it pre-installed.

To create and run your first servlet:

1. New... Project... Dynamic Web Project.
2. Right click the project... New Servlet.
3. Write some code in the doGet() method.
4. Find the servers view in the Java EE perspective, it's usually one of the tabs at the bottom.
5. Right click in there and select new Server.
6. Select Tomcat X.X and a wizard will point you to finding the installation.
7. Right click the server you just created and select Add and Remove... and add your created web project.
8. Right click your servlet and select Run > Run on Server...

That should do it for you. You can use ant to build here if that's what you'd like but eclipse will actually do the build and automatically deploy the changes to the server. With Tomcat you might have to restart it every now and again depending on the change.

31-DEC-95 isn't a string, nor is 20-JUN-94. They're numbers with some extra stuff added on the end. This should be '31-DEC-95' or '20-JUN-94' - note the single quote, '. This will enable you to do a string comparison.

However, you're not doing a string comparison; you're doing a date comparison. You should transform your string into a date. Either by using the built-in TO_DATE() function, or a date literal.

This method has a few unnecessary pitfalls

• As a_horse_with_no_name noted in the comments, DEC, doesn't necessarily mean December. It depends on your NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE and NLS_DATE_FORMAT settings. To ensure that your comparison with work in any locale you can use the datetime format model MM instead
• The year '95 is inexact. You know you mean 1995, but what if it was '50, is that 1950 or 2050? It's always best to be explicit

Date literals

A date literal is part of the ANSI standard, which means you don't have to use an Oracle specific function. When using a literal you must specify your date in the format YYYY-MM-DD and you cannot include a time element.

Remember that the Oracle date datatype includes a time elemement, so the date without a time portion is equivalent to 1995-12-31 00:00:00.

If you want to include a time portion then you'd have to use a timestamp literal, which takes the format YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS[.FF0-9]

NLS_DATE_LANGUAGE is derived from NLS_LANGUAGE and NLS_DATE_FORMAT is derived from NLS_TERRITORY. These are set when you initially created the database but they can be altered by changing your inialization parameters file - only if really required - or at the session level by using the ALTER SESSION syntax. For instance:

alter session set nls_date_format = 'DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS';

This means:

• DD numeric day of the month, 1 - 31
• MM numeric month of the year, 01 - 12 ( January is 01 )
• YYYY 4 digit year - in my opinion this is always better than a 2 digit year YY as there is no confusion with what century you're referring to.
• HH24 hour of the day, 0 - 23
• MI minute of the hour, 0 - 59
• SS second of the minute, 0-59

You can find out your current language and date language settings by querying V$NLS_PARAMETERSs and the full gamut of valid values by querying V$NLS_VALID_VALUES.

If you've been reading on ggplot then maybe the only thing you're missing is combining your two data frames into one long one.

So, let's start with something like what you have, two separate sets of data and combine them.

The difference is that const char * is a pointer to a const char, while char * const is a constant pointer to a char.

The first, the value being pointed to can't be changed but the pointer can be. The second, the value being pointed at can change but the pointer can't (similar to a reference).

There is also a

const char * const

which is a constant pointer to a constant char (so nothing about it can be changed).
