Taking inputs with BufferedReader in Java

Create a function with optional call variables

Powershell provides a lot of built-in support for common parameter scenarios, including mandatory parameters, optional parameters, "switch" (aka flag) parameters, and "parameter sets."

Without these packages verify=False was not working.

git ignore vim temporary files

This is something that should only be done on a per-user basis, not per-repository. If Joe uses emacs, he will want to have emacs backup files ignored, but Betty (who uses vi) will want vi backup files ignored (in many cases, they are similar, but there are about 24,893 common editors in existence and it is pretty ridiculous to try to ignore all of the various backup extensions.)

In other words, do not put anything in .gitignore or in core.excludes in $GIT_DIR/config. Put the info in $HOME/.gitconfig instead (as nunopolonia suggests with --global.) Note that "global" means per-user, not per-system.

If you want configuration across the system for all users (which you don't), you'll need a different mechanism. (Possibly with templates setup prior to initialization of the repository.)

Returning JSON object as response in Spring Boot

As you are using Spring Boot web, Jackson dependency is implicit and we do not have to define explicitly. You can check for Jackson dependency in your pom.xml in the dependency hierarchy tab if using eclipse.

And as you have annotated with @RestController there is no need to do explicit json conversion. Just return a POJO and jackson serializer will take care of converting to json. It is equivalent to using @ResponseBody when used with @Controller. Rather than placing @ResponseBody on every controller method we place @RestController instead of vanilla @Controller and @ResponseBody by default is applied on all resources in that controller.

The problem you are facing is because the returned object(JSONObject) does not have getter for certain properties. And your intention is not to serialize this JSONObject but instead to serialize a POJO. So just return the POJO.

If you want to return a json serialized string then just return the string. Spring will use StringHttpMessageConverter instead of JSON converter in this case.

Normally Python throws NameError if the variable is not defined:

However, you've managed to stumble upon a name that already exists in Python.

Because dict is the name of a built-in type in Python you are seeing what appears to be a strange error message, but in reality it is not.

The type of dict is a type. All types are objects in Python. Thus you are actually trying to index into the type object. This is why the error message says that the "'type' object is not subscriptable."

>>> type(dict)
<type 'type'>
>>> dict[0]
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
TypeError: 'type' object is not subscriptable

Note that you can blindly assign to the dict name, but you really don't want to do that. It's just going to cause you problems later.

The true source of the problem is that you must assign variables prior to trying to use them. If you simply reorder the statements of your question, it will almost certainly work:

I was solving same problem recently. I was designing a write cmdlet for my Subtitle module. I had six different user stories:

  • Subtitle only
  • Subtitle and path (original file name is used)
  • Subtitle and new file name (original path is used)
  • Subtitle and name suffix is used (original path and modified name is used).
  • Subtile, new path and new file name is is used.
  • Subtitle, new path and suffix is used.

I end up in the big frustration because I though that 4 parameters will be enough. Like most of the times, the frustration was pointless because it was my fault. I didn't know enough about parameter sets.

After some research in documentation, I realized where is the problem. With knowledge how the parameter sets should be used, I developed a general and simple approach how to solve this problem. A pencil and a sheet of paper is required but a spreadsheet editor is better:

  1. Write down all intended ways how the cmdlet should be used => user stories.
  2. Keep adding parameters with meaningful names and mark the use of the parameters until you have a unique collection set => no repetitive combination of parameters.
  3. Implement parameter sets into your code.
  4. Prepare tests for all possible user stories.
  5. Run tests (big surprise, right?). IDEs doesn't checks parameter sets collision, tests could save lots of trouble later one.

BTW: The parameter uniqueness within parameter sets is the reason why the ParameterSetName property doesn't support [String[]]. It doesn't really make any sense.

For variables describing distances, you would use \newlength (and manipulate the values with \setlength, \addlength, \settoheight, \settolength and \settodepth).

Similarly you have access to \newcounter for things like section and figure numbers which should increment throughout the document. I've used this one in the past to provide code samples that were numbered separatly of other figures...

Also of note is \makebox which allows you to store a bit of laid-out document for later re-use (and for use with \settolength...).

To understand the reason why you need to jump through so many hoops, you need to understand a bit more about how matplotlib is structured.

Matplotlib deliberately avoids doing "static" positioning of ticks, etc, unless it's explicitly told to. The assumption is that you'll want to interact with the plot, and so the bounds of the plot, ticks, ticklabels, etc will be dynamically changing.

Therefore, you can't just set the text of a given tick label. By default, it's re-set by the axis's Locator and Formatter every time the plot is drawn.

However, if the Locators and Formatters are set to be static (FixedLocator and FixedFormatter, respectively), then the tick labels stay the same.

This is what set_*ticklabels or ax.*axis.set_ticklabels does.

Hopefully that makes it slighly more clear as to why changing an individual tick label is a bit convoluted.

Often, what you actually want to do is just annotate a certain position. In that case, look into annotate, instead.

git returns http error 407 from proxy after CONNECT

You need to visualize the problem.

Write two ordered lists on a piece of paper, and using two fingers to point the elements of the respective lists, step through them as you do the merge in your head. Then translate your mental decision process into an algorithm and then code.

The optimal solution makes a single pass through the two lists.

Running Facebook application on localhost

Ok I'm not sure what's up with these answers but I'll let you know what worked for me as advised by a senior dev at my work. I'm working in Ruby on Rails and using Facebook's JavaScript code to get access tokens.

Problem: To do authentication, Facebook is taking the url from your address bar and comparing that with what they have on file. They don't allow you to use localhost:3000 for whatever reason. However, you can use a completely made-up domain name like yoursite.dev by running a local server and pointing yoursite.dev to 127.0.0.1:3000 or wherever your localhost was pointing to.

Step 1: Install or update Nginx

$ brew install nginx (install) or $ brew upgrade nginx (update)

Step 2: Open up your nginx config file

/usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf (usually here)

/opt/boxen/config/nginx/nginx.conf(if you use Boxen)

Step 3 Add this bit of code into your http {} block

Replace proxy_pass with wherever you want to point yoursite.dev to. In my case it was replacing localhost:3000 or the equivalent 127.0.0.1:3000

No, that's pretty much it. In theory you could use visibility: collapse on some <col>?s to do it, but browser support isn't all there.

To improve what you've got slightly, you could use table-layout: fixed on the <table> to allow the browser to use the simpler, faster and more predictable fixed-table-layout algorithm. You could also drop the .show rules as when a cell isn't made display: none by a .hide rule it will automatically be display: table-cell. Allowing table display to revert to default rather than setting it explicitly avoids problems in IE<8, where the table display values are not supported.

The pattern yyyy-MM-dd isn't an officially supported format for Date constructor. Firefox seems to support it, but don't count on other browsers doing the same.

Here are some supported strings:

  • MM-dd-yyyy

  • MMMM dd, yyyy
  • MMM dd, yyyy

DateJS seems like a good library for parsing non standard date formats.

So, it seems that YYYY-MM-DD is included in the standard, but for some reason, Safari doesn't support it.

How does the compilation/linking process work?

GCC compiles a C/C++ program into executable in 4 steps.

Execute write on doc: It isn't possible to write into a document from an asynchronously-loaded external script unless it is explicitly opened.

An asynchronously loaded script is likely going to run AFTER the document has been fully parsed and closed. Thus, you can't use document.write() from such a script (well technically you can, but it won't do what you want).

You will need to replace any document.write() statements in that script with explicit DOM manipulations by creating the DOM elements and then inserting them into a particular parent with .appendChild() or .insertBefore() or setting .innerHTML or some mechanism for direct DOM manipulation like that.

For example, instead of this type of code in an inline script:

In order to serve up a static CSS file in express app (i.e. use a css style file to style ejs "templates" files in express app). Here are the simple 3 steps that need to happen:

  1. Place your css file called "styles.css" in a folder called "assets" and the assets folder in a folder called "public". Thus the relative path to the css file should be "/public/assets/styles.css"

  2. In the head of each of your ejs files you would simply call the css file (like you do in a regular html file) with a <link href=… /> as shown in the code below. Make sure you copy and paste the code below directly into your ejs file <head> section

My understanding is that this is actually very simple:

  • Javascript is always pass by value, but when a variable refers to an object (including arrays), the "value" is a reference to the object.
  • Changing the value of a variable never changes the underlying primitive or object, it just points the variable to a new primitive or object.

Stub, Fakes and Mocks have different meanings across different sources. I suggest you to introduce your team internal terms and agree upon their meaning.

I think it is important to distinguish between two approaches: - behaviour validation (implies behaviour substitution) - end-state validation (implies behaviour emulation)

Consider email sending in case of error. When doing behaviour validation - you check that method Send of IEmailSender was executed once. And you need to emulate return result of this method, return Id of the sent message. So you say: "I expect that Send will be called. And I will just return dummy (or random) Id for any call". This is behaviour validation: emailSender.Expect(es=>es.Send(anyThing)).Return((subject,body) => "dummyId")

When doing state validation you will need to create TestEmailSender that implements IEmailSender. And implement Send method - by saving input to some data structure that will be used for future state verification like array of some objects SentEmails and then it tests you will check that SentEmails contains expected email. This is state validation: Assert.AreEqual(1, emailSender.SentEmails.Count)

From my readings I understood that Behaviour validation usually called Mocks. And State validation usually called Stubs or Fakes.

The cleanest way is to not (directly) use an iterator at all:

  • type your map with generics

Streaming is seldom used over HTTP itself, and HTTP is seldom run over UDP. See, however, RTP.

For something as your example (in the comment), you're not showing a protocol for the resource. Typically, the resource will be saved to local disk before being played back, so the network transfer is not what's usually meant by "streaming".

As commenters have pointed out, though, it's certainly possible to really stream over HTTP, and that's done by some.

If you use the request body in a GET request, you're breaking the REST principle, because your GET request won't be able to be cached, because cache system uses only the URL.

What's worse, your URL can't be bookmarked, because the URL doesn't contain all the information needed to redirect the user to this page.

Use URL or Query parameters instead of request body parameters, e.g.:

SQL Server database restore error: specified cast is not valid. (SqlManagerUI)

Finally got this error to go away on a restore. I moved to SQL2012 out of frustration, but I guess this would probably still work on 2008R2. I had to use the logical names:

And from there I ran a restore statement with MOVE using logical names.

Escaping quotes in MSSQL is done by a double quote, so a '' or a "" will produce one escaped ' and ", respectively.

What is the difference between `new Object()` and object literal notation?

They both do the same thing (unless someone's done something unusual), other than that your second one creates an object and adds a property to it. But literal notation takes less space in the source code. It's clearly recognizable as to what is happening, so using new Object(), you are really just typing more and (in theory, if not optimized out by the JavaScript engine) doing an unnecessary function call.

technically do not do the same thing. The first just creates an object. The second creates one and assigns a property. For the first one to be the same you then need a second step to create and assign the property.

The "something unusual" that someone could do would be to shadow or assign to the default Object global:

In practice, there's never a reason to use new Object rather than {} (unless you've done that very unusual thing).

What are the rules for calling the superclass constructor?

Everybody mentioned a constructor call through an initialization list, but nobody said that a parent class's constructor can be called explicitly from the derived member's constructor's body. See the question Calling a constructor of the base class from a subclass' constructor body, for example. The point is that if you use an explicit call to a parent class or super class constructor in the body of a derived class, this is actually just creating an instance of the parent class and it is not invoking the parent class constructor on the derived object. The only way to invoke a parent class or super class constructor on a derived class' object is through the initialization list and not in the derived class constructor body. So maybe it should not be called a "superclass constructor call". I put this answer here because somebody might get confused (as I did).

First of all, you need to make sure you're producing the correct number of * symbols. We need to produce 1, 3, 5 et cetera instead of 1, 2, 3. This can be fixed by modifying the counter variables:

Before printing the * symbols we print some spaces and the number of spaces varies depending on the line that we are on. That is what the for loop with the k variable is for. We can see that k iterates over the values 4, 3, 2, 1 and 0 when ì is 1,3, 5, 7 and 9. This is what we want because the higher in the triangle we are, the more spaces we need to place. The further we get down the triangle, we less spaces we need and the last line of the triangle does not even need spaces at all.

SQL, Postgres OIDs, What are they and why are they useful?

OID's are still in use for Postgres with large objects (though some people would argue large objects are not generally useful anyway). They are also used extensively by system tables. They are used for instance by TOAST which stores larger than 8KB BYTEA's (etc.) off to a separate storage area (transparently) which is used by default by all tables. Their direct use associated with "normal" user tables is basically deprecated.

The oid type is currently implemented as an unsigned four-byte integer. Therefore, it is not large enough to provide database-wide uniqueness in large databases, or even in large individual tables. So, using a user-created table's OID column as a primary key is discouraged. OIDs are best used only for references to system tables.

Apparently the OID sequence "does" wrap if it exceeds 4B 6. So in essence it's a global counter that can wrap. If it does wrap, some slowdown may start occurring when it's used and "searched" for unique values, etc.

In the past when un managed nand was the most popular storage technology, yaffs2 was the most common file system. This days there are few devices using un-managed nand, and those still in use are slowly migrating to ubifs.

Today most common storage is emmc (managed nand), for such devices ext4 is far more popular, but, this file system is slowly clears its way for f2fs (flash friendly fs).

Edit: f2fs will probably won't make it as the common fs for flash devices (including android)
