Php artisan make:auth command is not defined

In the Laravel 6 application the make:auth command no longer exists.

Laravel UI is a new first-party package that extracts the UI portion of a Laravel project into a separate laravel/ui package. The separate package enables the Laravel team to iterate on the UI package separately from the main Laravel codebase.

You can install the laravel/ui package via composer:

composer require laravel/ui

The ui:auth Command

Besides the new ui command, the laravel/ui package comes with another command for generating the auth scaffolding:

php artisan ui:auth

If you run the ui:auth command, it will generate the auth routes, a HomeController, auth views, and a app.blade.php layout file.

If you want to generate the views alone, type the following command instead:

php artisan ui:auth --views

If you want to generate the auth scaffolding at the same time:

php artisan ui vue --auth
php artisan ui react --auth

php artisan ui vue --auth command will create all of the views you need for authentication and place them in the resources/views/auth directory

The ui command will also create a resources/views/layouts directory containing a base layout for your application. All of these views use the Bootstrap CSS framework, but you are free to customize them however you wish.

More detail follow. laravel-news & documentation

Simply you've to follow this two-step.

composer require laravel/ui
php artisan ui:auth

Route [login] not defined

Laravel ^5.7

The Authenticate Middleware

Laravel ^5.7 includes new middleware to handle and redirect unauthenticated users.

It works well with "web" guard... of course the "login" route (or whatever you name your login route) should be defined in web.php.

the problem is when your are using custom guard. Different guard would redirect unauthenticated users to different route.

here's a quick workaround based on John's response (it works for me).

app/Http/Middleware/Authenticate.php

<?php

namespace App\Http\Middleware;

use Closure;
use Illuminate\Auth\Middleware\Authenticate as Middleware;

class Authenticate extends Middleware
{
    /**
     * @var array
     */
    protected $guards = [];

    /**
     * Handle an incoming request.
     *
     * @param  \Illuminate\Http\Request  $request
     * @param  \Closure  $next
     * @param  string[]  ...$guards
     * @return mixed
     *
     * @throws \Illuminate\Auth\AuthenticationException
     */
    public function handle($request, Closure $next, ...$guards)
    {
        $this->guards = $guards;

        return parent::handle($request, $next, ...$guards);
    }

    /**
     * Get the path the user should be redirected to when they are not authenticated.
     *
     * @param  \Illuminate\Http\Request  $request
     * @return string
     */
    protected function redirectTo($request)
    {
        if (! $request->expectsJson()) {

            if (in_array('admin', $this->guards)) {

                return route('admin.login');
            }

            return route('login');
        }

PHP GuzzleHttp. How to make a post request with params?

Note in Guzzle V6.0+, another source of getting the following error may be incorrect use of JSON as an array:

Passing in the "body" request option as an array to send a POST request has been deprecated. Please use the "form_params" request option to send a application/x-www-form-urlencoded request, or a the "multipart" request option to send a multipart/form-data request.

Incorrect:

$response = $client->post('http://example.com/api', [
    'body' => [
        'name' => 'Example name',
    ]
])

Correct:

$response = $client->post('http://example.com/api', [
    'json' => [
        'name' => 'Example name',
    ]
])

Correct:

$response = $client->post('http://example.com/api', [
    'headers' => ['Content-Type' => 'application/json'],
    'body' => json_encode([
        'name' => 'Example name',

MySQL stored procedure return value

Add:

  • DELIMITER at the beginning and end of the SP.
  • DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS validar_egreso; at the beginning
  • When calling the SP, use @variableName.

This works for me. (I modified some part of your script so ANYONE can run it with out having your tables).

DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS `validar_egreso`;

DELIMITER $$

CREATE DEFINER='root'@'localhost' PROCEDURE `validar_egreso` (
    IN codigo_producto VARCHAR(100),
    IN cantidad INT,
    OUT valido INT(11)
)
BEGIN

    DECLARE resta INT;
    SET resta = 0;

    SELECT (codigo_producto - cantidad) INTO resta;

    IF(resta > 1) THEN
       SET valido = 1;
    ELSE
       SET valido = -1;
    END IF;

    SELECT valido;
END $$

DELIMITER ;

-- execute the stored procedure
CALL validar_egreso(4, 1, @val);

-- display the result

Inserting created_at data with Laravel

In my case, I wanted to unit test that users weren't able to verify their email addresses after 1 hour had passed, so I didn't want to do any of the other answers since they would also persist when not unit testing, so I ended up just manually updating the row after insert:

// Create new user
$user = factory(User::class)->create();

// Add an email verification token to the
// email_verification_tokens table
$token = $user->generateNewEmailVerificationToken();

// Get the time 61 minutes ago
$created_at = (new Carbon())->subMinutes(61);

// Do the update
\DB::update(
    'UPDATE email_verification_tokens SET created_at = ?',
    [$created_at]
);

Note: For anything other than unit testing, I would look at the other answers here.

How do I use Join-Path to combine more than two strings into a file path?

The following approach is more concise than piping Join-Path statements:

$p = "a"; "b", "c", "d" | ForEach-Object -Process { $p = Join-Path $p $_ }

$p then holds the concatenated path 'a\b\c\d'.

(I just noticed that this is the exact same approach as Mike Fair's, sorry.)

composer laravel create project

I also had same problem then I found this on there documentation page

So if you want to create a project by name of test_laravel in directory /Applications/MAMP/htdocs/ then what you need to do is

go to your project parent directory

cd /Applications/MAMP/htdocs

and fire this command

composer create-project laravel/laravel test_laravel --prefer-dist

that's it, this is really easy and it also creates Application Key automatically for you

How to properly -filter multiple strings in a PowerShell copy script

-Filter only accepts a single string. -Include accepts multiple values, but qualifies the -Path argument. The trick is to append \* to the end of the path, and then use -Include to select multiple extensions. BTW, quoting strings is unnecessary in cmdlet arguments unless they contain spaces or shell special characters.

Get-ChildItem $originalPath\* -Include *.gif, *.jpg, *.xls*, *.doc*, *.pdf*, *.wav*, .ppt*

Note that this will work regardless of whether $originalPath ends in a backslash, because multiple consecutive backslashes are interpreted as a single path separator. For example, try:

Get-ChildItem C:\\\\\Windows

How to draw an overlay on a SurfaceView used by Camera on Android?

I think you should call the super.draw() method first before you do anything in surfaceView's draw method.

Can I load a UIImage from a URL?

get DLImageLoader and try folowing code

   [DLImageLoader loadImageFromURL:imageURL
                          completed:^(NSError *error, NSData *imgData) {
                              imageView.image = [UIImage imageWithData:imgData];
                              [imageView setContentMode:UIViewContentModeCenter];

                          }];

Another typical real-world example of using DLImageLoader, which may help someone...

PFObject *aFacebookUser = [self.fbFriends objectAtIndex:thisRow];
NSString *facebookImageURL = [NSString stringWithFormat:
    @"http://graph.facebook.com/%@/picture?type=large",
    [aFacebookUser objectForKey:@"id"] ];

__weak UIImageView *loadMe = self.userSmallAvatarImage;
// ~~note~~ you my, but usually DO NOT, want a weak ref
[DLImageLoader loadImageFromURL:facebookImageURL
   completed:^(NSError *error, NSData *imgData)
    {
    if ( loadMe == nil ) return;

    if (error == nil)
        {
        UIImage *image = [UIImage imageWithData:imgData];
        image = [image ourImageScaler];
        loadMe.image = image;
        }
    else
        {
        // an error when loading the image from the net
        }
    }];

As I mention above another great library to consider these days is Haneke (unfortunately it's not as lightweight).

"unrecognized selector sent to instance" error in Objective-C

Another reason/solution to add to the list. This one is caused by iOS6.0 (and/or bad programming). In older versions the selector would match if the parameter types matched, but in iOS 6.0 I got crashes in previously working code where the name of the parameter wasn't correct.

I was doing something like

[objectName methodName:@"somestring" lat:latValue lng:lngValue];

but in the definition (both .h and .m) I had

(viod) methodName:(NSString *) latitude:(double)latitude longitude:(double)longitude;

This worked fine on iOS5 but not on 6, even the exact same build deployed to different devices.

I don't get why the compiler coudn't tell me this, anyway - problem soled.

Objective-C: Calling selectors with multiple arguments

@Shane Arney

performSelector:withObject:withObject:

You might also want to mention that this method is only for passing maximum 2 arguments, and it cannot be delayed. (such as performSelector:withObject:afterDelay:).

kinda weird that apple only supports 2 objects to be send and didnt make it more generic.

In php, is 0 treated as empty?

Use strlen() instead. I ran onto the same issue using 1/0 as possible values for some variables. I am using if (strlen($_POST['myValue']) == 0) to test if there is a character or not in my variable.

'foo' was not declared in this scope c++

In C++ you are supposed to declare functions before you can use them. In your code integrate is not declared before the point of the first call to integrate. The same applies to sum. Hence the error. Either reorder your definitions so that function definition precedes the first call to that function, or introduce a [forward] non-defining declaration for each function.

Additionally, defining external non-inline functions in header files in a no-no in C++. Your definitions of SkewNormalEvalutatable::SkewNormalEvalutatable, getSkewNormal, integrate etc. have no business being in header file.

Also SkewNormalEvalutatable e(); declaration in C++ declares a function e, not an object e as you seem to assume. The simple SkewNormalEvalutatable e; will declare an object initialized by default constructor.

Also, you receive the last parameter of integrate (and of sum) by value as an object of Evaluatable type. That means that attempting to pass SkewNormalEvalutatable as last argument of integrate will result in SkewNormalEvalutatable getting sliced to Evaluatable. Polymorphism won't work because of that. If you want polymorphic behavior, you have to receive this parameter by reference or by pointer, but not by value.

How to break out of a loop from inside a switch?

The break keyword in C++ only terminates the most-nested enclosing iteration or switch statement. Thus, you couldn't break out of the while (true) loop directly within the switch statement; however you could use the following code, which I think is an excellent pattern for this type of problem:

for (; msg->state != DONE; msg = next_message()) {
    switch (msg->state) {
    case MSGTYPE:
        //...
        break;

    //...
    }
}

If you needed to do something when msg->state equals DONE (such as run a cleanup routine), then place that code immediately after the for loop; i.e. if you currently have:

while (true) {
    switch (msg->state) {
    case MSGTYPE:
        //...
        break;

    //...

    case DONE:
        do_cleanup();
        break;
    }

    if (msg->state == DONE)
        break;

    msg = next_message();
}

Then use instead:

for (; msg->state != DONE; msg = next_message()) {
    switch (msg->state) {
    case MSGTYPE:
        //...
        break;

    //...
    }
}

assert(msg->state == DONE);
do_cleanup();

Specifying content of an iframe instead of the src attribute to a page

In combination with what Guffa described, you could use the technique described in Explanation of <script type = "text/template"> ... </script> to store the HTML document in a special script element (see the link for an explanation on how this works). That's a lot easier than storing the HTML document in a string.

Does VBA have Dictionary Structure?

Yes. For VB6, VBA (Excel), and VB.NET

What are the differences between struct and class in C++?

According to Stroustrup in the C++ Programming Language:

Which style you use depends on circumstances and taste. I usually prefer to use struct for classes that have all data public. I think of such classes as "not quite proper types, just data structures."

Functionally, there is no difference other than the public / private

When to use 'npm start' and when to use 'ng serve'?

From the document

npm-start :

This runs an arbitrary command specified in the package's "start" property of its "scripts" object. If no "start" property is specified on the "scripts" object, it will run node server.js.

which means it will call the start scripts inside the package.json

"scripts": {
"start": "tsc && concurrently \"npm run tsc:w\" \"npm run lite --baseDir ./app --port 8001\" ",
"lite": "lite-server",
 ...
}

ng serve:

Provided by angular/angular-cli to start angular2 apps which created by angular-cli. when you install angular-cli, it will create ng.cmd under C:\Users\name\AppData\Roaming\npm (for windows) and execute "%~dp0\node.exe" "%~dp0\node_modules\angular-cli\bin\ng" %*

So using npm start you can make your own execution where is ng serve is only for angular-cli

If you want to have control over this you need to implement the [IEquatable interface][1]

Bad operand type for unary +: 'str'

You say that if int(splitLine[0]) > int(lastUnix): is causing the trouble, but you don't actually show anything which suggests that. I think this line is the problem instead:

print 'Pulled', + stock

Do you see why this line could cause that error message? You want either

>>> stock = "AAAA"
>>> print 'Pulled', stock
Pulled AAAA

or

>>> print 'Pulled ' + stock
Pulled AAAA

not

>>> print 'Pulled', + stock
PulledTraceback (most recent call last):

    print 'Pulled', + stock

You're asking Python to apply the + symbol to a string like +23 makes a positive 23, and she's objecting.

What is the difference between __str__ and __repr__?

Excellent answers already cover the difference between __str__ and __repr__, which for me boils down to the former being readable even by an end user, and the latter being as useful as possible to developers. Given that, I find that the default implementation of __repr__ often fails to achieve this goal because it omits information useful to developers.

For this reason, if I have a simple enough __str__, I generally just try to get the best of both worlds with something like:

def __repr__(self):
    return '{0} ({1})'.format(object.__repr__(self), str(self))

How to get HttpClient returning status code and response body?

BasicResponseHandler throws if the status is not 2xx. See its javadoc.

Here is how I would do it:

HttpResponse response = client.execute( get );
int code = response.getStatusLine().getStatusCode();
InputStream body = response.getEntity().getContent();
// Read the body stream

Or you can also write a ResponseHandler starting from BasicResponseHandler source that don't throw when the status is not 2xx.

Converting .NET DateTime to JSON

the conversion from 1970,1,1 needs the double rounded to zero decimal places i thinks

DateTime d1 = new DateTime(1970, 1, 1);
DateTime d2 = dt.ToUniversalTime();
TimeSpan ts = new TimeSpan(d2.Ticks - d1.Ticks);
return Math.Round( ts.TotalMilliseconds,0);

on the client side i use

new Date(+data.replace(/\D/g, ''));

$.focus() not working

For those with the problem of not working because you used "$(element).show()". I solved it the next way:

 var textbox = $("#otherOption");
 textbox.show("fast", function () {
    textbox[0].focus();
  });

So you dont need a timer, it will execute after the show method is completed.

How to create materialized views in SQL Server?

For MS T-SQL Server, I suggest looking into creating an index with the "include" statement. Uniqueness is not required, neither is the physical sorting of data associated with a clustered index. The "Index ... Include ()" creates a separate physical data storage automatically maintained by the system. It is conceptually very similar to an Oracle Materialized View.

Creating self signed certificate for domain and subdomains - NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID

Your wildcard *.example.com does not cover the root domain example.com but will cover any variant on a sub-domain such as www.example.com or test.example.com

The preferred method is to establish Subject Alternative Names like in Fabian's Answer but keep in mind that Chrome currently requires the Common Name to be listed additionally as one of the Subject Alternative Names (as it is correctly demonstrated in his answer). I recently discovered this problem because I had the Common Name example.com with SANs www.example.com and test.example.com, but got the NET::ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID warning from Chrome. I had to generate a new Certificate Signing Request with example.com as both the Common Name and one of the SANs. Then Chrome fully trusted the certificate. And don't forget to import the root certificate into Chrome as a trusted authority for identifying websites.

insert datetime value in sql database with c#

you can send your DateTime value into SQL as a String with its special format. this format is "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss"

Example: CurrentTime is a variable as datetime Type in SQL. And dt is a DateTime variable in .Net.

DateTime dt=DateTime.Now;
string sql = "insert into Users (CurrentTime) values (‘{0}’)";

sql = string.Format(sql, dt.ToString("yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss") );

javascript: using a condition in switch case

Your code does not work because it is not doing what you are expecting it to do. Switch blocks take in a value, and compare each case to the given value, looking for equality. Your comparison value is an integer, but most of your case expressions resolve to a boolean value.

So, for example, say liCount = 2. Your first case will not match, because 2 != 0. Your second case, (liCount<=5 && liCount>0) evaluates to true, but 2 != true, so this case will not match either.

For this reason, as many others have said, you should use a series of if...then...else if blocks to do this.

How to clear browsing history using JavaScript?

Can you try using document.location.replace() it is used to clear the last entry in the history and replace it with the address of a new url. replace() removes the URL of the current document from the document history, meaning that it is not possible to use the "back" button to navigate back to the original document.

<script type="text/javascript">
    function Navigate(){

Running Python in PowerShell?

The default execution policy, "Restricted", prevents all scripts from running, including scripts that you write on the local computer.

The execution policy is saved in the registry, so you need to change it only once on each computer.

To change the execution policy, use the following procedure:

  1. Start Windows PowerShell with the "Run as administrator" option.

  2. At the command prompt, type:

    Set-ExecutionPolicy AllSigned

    -or-

    Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned

The change is effective immediately.

To run a script, type the full name and the full path to the script file.

For example, to run the Get-ServiceLog.ps1 script in the C:\Scripts directory, type:

C:\Scripts\Get-ServiceLog.ps1

And to the Python file, you have two points. Try to add your Python folder to your PATH and the extension .py.

To PATHEXT from go properties of computer. Then click on advanced system protection. Then environment variable. Here you will find the two points.

How to send an email from JavaScript

You can't send an email directly with javascript.

You can, however, open the user's mail client:

window.open('mailto:[email protected]');

There are also some parameters to pre-fill the subject and the body:

window.open('mailto:[email protected]?subject=subject&body=body');

Another solution would be to do an ajax call to your server, so that the server sends the email. Be careful not to allow anyone to send any email through your server.

"unable to locate adb" using Android Studio

  1. on your android studio at the top right corner beside the search icon you can find the SDK Manager.
  2. view android SDK location (this will show you your sdk path)
  3. navigate to file explorer on your system, and locate the file path, this should be found something like Windows=> c://Users/johndoe/AppData/local/android (you can now see the sdk.) Mac=>/Users/johndoe/Library/Android/sdk
  4. check the platform tools folder and see if you would see anything like adb.exe (it should be missing probably because it was corrupted and your antivirus or windows defender has quarantined it)
  5. delete the platform tools folder
  6. go back to android studio and from where you left off navigate to sdk tools (this should be right under android sdk location)
  7. uncheck android sdk platform-tools and select ok. (this will uninstall the platform tools from your ide) wait till it is done and then your gradle will sync.
  8. after sync is complete, go back and check the box of android sdk platform-tools (this will install a fresh one with new adb.exe) wait till it is done and sync project and then you are good to go.

I hope this saves someone some hours of pain.

Connect Android Studio with SVN

Go to File->Settings->Version Control->Subversion enter the path for your SVN executable in the General tab under Subversion configuration directory. Also, you can download a latest SVN client such as VisualSVN and point the path to the executable as mentioned above. That will most likely solve your problem.

Google Maps V3 - How to calculate the zoom level for a given bounds

Since all of the other answers seem to have issues for me with one or another set of circumstances (map width/height, bounds width/height, etc.) I figured I'd put my answer here...

There was a very useful javascript file here: http://www.polyarc.us/adjust.js

I used that as a base for this:

var com = com || {};
com.local = com.local || {};
com.local.gmaps3 = com.local.gmaps3 || {};

com.local.gmaps3.CoordinateUtils = new function() {

   var OFFSET = 268435456;
   var RADIUS = OFFSET / Math.PI;

   /**
    * Gets the minimum zoom level that entirely contains the Lat/Lon bounding rectangle given.
    *
    * @param {google.maps.LatLngBounds} boundary the Lat/Lon bounding rectangle to be contained
    * @param {number} mapWidth the width of the map in pixels
    * @param {number} mapHeight the height of the map in pixels
    * @return {number} the minimum zoom level that entirely contains the given Lat/Lon rectangle boundary
    */
   this.getMinimumZoomLevelContainingBounds = function ( boundary, mapWidth, mapHeight ) {
      var zoomIndependentSouthWestPoint = latLonToZoomLevelIndependentPoint( boundary.getSouthWest() );
      var zoomIndependentNorthEastPoint = latLonToZoomLevelIndependentPoint( boundary.getNorthEast() );
      var zoomIndependentNorthWestPoint = { x: zoomIndependentSouthWestPoint.x, y: zoomIndependentNorthEastPoint.y };
      var zoomIndependentSouthEastPoint = { x: zoomIndependentNorthEastPoint.x, y: zoomIndependentSouthWestPoint.y };
      var zoomLevelDependentSouthEast, zoomLevelDependentNorthWest, zoomLevelWidth, zoomLevelHeight;
      for( var zoom = 21; zoom >= 0; --zoom ) {
         zoomLevelDependentSouthEast = zoomLevelIndependentPointToMapCanvasPoint( zoomIndependentSouthEastPoint, zoom );
         zoomLevelDependentNorthWest = zoomLevelIndependentPointToMapCanvasPoint( zoomIndependentNorthWestPoint, zoom );
         zoomLevelWidth = zoomLevelDependentSouthEast.x - zoomLevelDependentNorthWest.x;
         zoomLevelHeight = zoomLevelDependentSouthEast.y - zoomLevelDependentNorthWest.y;
         if( zoomLevelWidth <= mapWidth && zoomLevelHeight <= mapHeight )
            return zoom;
      }
      return 0;
   };

   function latLonToZoomLevelIndependentPoint ( latLon ) {
      return { x: lonToX( latLon.lng() ), y: latToY( latLon.lat() ) };
   }

   function zoomLevelIndependentPointToMapCanvasPoint ( point, zoomLevel ) {
      return {
         x: zoomLevelIndependentCoordinateToMapCanvasCoordinate( point.x, zoomLevel ),
         y: zoomLevelIndependentCoordinateToMapCanvasCoordinate( point.y, zoomLevel )
      };
   }

   function zoomLevelIndependentCoordinateToMapCanvasCoordinate ( coordinate, zoomLevel ) {
      return coordinate >> ( 21 - zoomLevel );
   }

   function latToY ( lat ) {
      return OFFSET - RADIUS * Math.log( ( 1 + Math.sin( lat * Math.PI / 180 ) ) / ( 1 - Math.sin( lat * Math.PI / 180 ) ) ) / 2;
   }

   function lonToX ( lon ) {
      return OFFSET + RADIUS * lon * Math.PI / 180;
   }

};

You can certainly clean this up or minify it if needed, but I kept the variable names long in an attempt to make it easier to understand.

If you are wondering where OFFSET came from, apparently 268435456 is half of earth's circumference in pixels at zoom level 21 (according to http://www.appelsiini.net/2008/11/introduction-to-marker-clustering-with-google-maps).

Why is Git better than Subversion?

Eric Sink from SourceGear wrote series of articles on differences between distributed and nondistributed version controls systems. He compares pros and cons of most popular version control systems. Very interesting reading.
Articles can be found on his blog, www.ericsink.com:

AngularJS $location not changing the path

In my opinion many of the answers here seem a little bit hacky (e.g. $apply() or $timeout), since messing around with $apply() can lead to unwanted errors.

Usually, when the $location doesn't work it means that something was not implemented the angular way.

In this particular question, the problem seems to be in the non-angular AJAX part. I had a similiar problem, where the redirection using $location should take place after a promise resolved. I would like to illustrate the problem on this example.

The old code:

taskService.createTask(data).then(function(code){
            $location.path("task/" + code);
        }, function(error){});

Note: taskService.createTask returns a promise.

$q - the angular way to use promises:

let dataPromises = [taskService.createTask(data)];
        $q.all(dataPromises).then(function(response) {
                let code = response[0];
                $location.path("task/" + code);
            },
            function(error){});

Using $q to resolve the promise solved the redirection problem.

Editing legend (text) labels in ggplot

The legend titles can be labeled by specific aesthetic.

This can be achieved using the guides() or labs() functions from ggplot2 (more here and here). It allows you to add guide/legend properties using the aesthetic mapping.

Here's an example using the mtcars data set and labs():

ggplot(mtcars, aes(x=mpg, y=disp, size=hp, col=as.factor(cyl), shape=as.factor(gear))) +
  geom_point() +
  labs(x="miles per gallon", y="displacement", size="horsepower",
       col="# of cylinders", shape="# of gears")

enter image description here

Answering the OP's question using guides():

# transforming the data from wide to long
require(reshape2)
dfm <- melt(df, id="TY")

# creating a scatterplot
ggplot(data = dfm, aes(x=TY, y=value, color=variable)) +
  geom_point(size=5) +
  labs(title="Temperatures\n", x="TY [°C]", y="Txxx") +
  scale_color_manual(labels = c("T999", "T888"), values = c("blue", "red")) +
  theme_bw() +
  guides(color=guide_legend("my title")) # add guide properties by aesthetic

Adding Git-Bash to the new Windows Terminal

Another item to note - in settings.json I discovered if you don't use "commandline": "C:/Program Files/Git/bin/bash.exe"

and instead use: "commandline": "C:/Program Files/Git/git-bash.exe"

the Git shell will open up in an independent window outside of Windows Terminal instead of on a tab - which is not the desired behavior. In addition, the tab in Windows Terminal that opens will also need to be closed manually as it will display process exited information - [process exited with code 3221225786] etc.

Python: How to get stdout after running os.system?

I would like to expand on the Windows solution. Using IDLE with Python 2.7.5, When I run this code from file Expts.py:

import subprocess
r = subprocess.check_output('cmd.exe dir',shell=False)
print r

...in the Python Shell, I ONLY get the output corresponding to "cmd.exe"; the "dir" part is ignored. HOWEVER, when I add a switch such as /K or /C ...

import subprocess
r = subprocess.check_output('cmd.exe /K dir',shell=False)
print r

...then in the Python Shell, I get all that I expect including the directory listing. Woohoo !

Now, if I try any of those same things in DOS Python command window, without the switch, or with the /K switch, it appears to make the window hang because it is running a subprocess cmd.exe and it awaiting further input - type 'exit' then hit [enter] to release. But with the /K switch it works perfectly and returns you to the python prompt. Allrightee then.

Went a step further...I thought this was cool...When I instead do this in Expts.py:

import subprocess
r = subprocess.call("cmd.exe dir",shell=False)
print r

...a new DOS window pops open and remains there displaying only the results of "cmd.exe" not of "dir". When I add the /C switch, the DOS window opens and closes very fast before I can see anything (as expected, because /C terminates when done). When I instead add the /K switch, the DOS window pops open and remain, AND I get all the output I expect including the directory listing.

If I try the same thing (subprocess.call instead of subprocess.check_output) from a DOS Python command window; all output is within the same window, there are no popup windows. Without the switch, again the "dir" part is ignored, AND the prompt changes from the python prompt to the DOS prompt (since a cmd.exe subprocess is running in python; again type 'exit' and you will revert to the python prompt). Adding the /K switch prints out the directory listing and changes the prompt from python to DOS since /K does not terminate the subprocess. Changing the switch to /C gives us all the output expected AND returns to the python prompt since the subprocess terminates in accordance with /C.

Sorry for the long-winded response, but I am frustrated on this board with the many terse 'answers' which at best don't work (seems because they are not tested - like Eduard F's response above mine which is missing the switch) or worse, are so terse that they don't help much at all (e.g., 'try subprocess instead of os.system' ... yeah, OK, now what ??). In contrast, I have provided solutions which I tested, and showed how there are subtle differences between them. Took a lot of time but... Hope this helps.

Change Bootstrap tooltip color

In Bootstrap 3 (not tested in 4) you can override default colors with using a template when creating the tooltip. With this method you can specify tooltip colors runtime:

var bgColor = '#dd0000'; //red
var textColor = '#ffffff'; //white

$('#yourControlId').tooltip({
    placement: "top",
    template: '<div class="tooltip" role="tooltip"><div class="tooltip-arrow" style="border-top-color:' + bgColor + ';"></div><div class="tooltip-inner" style="background-color:' + bgColor + ';color:' + textColor + ';"></div></div>'
});

The template is based on original tooltip template. I only added the color styles. The placement must be top, because of arrow styling. (I haven't tried other placement types)

Is there any way to return HTML in a PHP function? (without building the return value as a string)

This may be a sketchy solution, and I'd appreciate anybody pointing out whether this is a bad idea, since it's not a standard use of functions. I've had some success getting HTML out of a PHP function without building the return value as a string with the following:

function noStrings() {
    echo ''?>
        <div>[Whatever HTML you want]</div>
    <?php;
}

The just 'call' the function:

noStrings();

And it will output:

<div>[Whatever HTML you want]</div>

Using this method, you can also define PHP variables within the function and echo them out inside the HTML.

How can I join elements of an array in Bash?

Surprisingly my solution is not yet given :) This is the simplest way for me. It doesn't need a function:

Format numbers in django templates

Slightly off topic:

I found this question while looking for a way to format a number as currency, like so:

$100
($50) # negative numbers without '-' and in parens

I ended up doing:

{% if   var >= 0 %} ${{ var|stringformat:"d" }}
{% elif var <  0 %} $({{ var|stringformat:"d"|cut:"-" }})
{% endif %}

You could also do, e.g. {{ var|stringformat:"1.2f"|cut:"-" }} to display as $50.00 (with 2 decimal places if that's what you want.

Perhaps slightly on the hacky side, but maybe someone else will find it useful.

Fragment fragmentA = new FragmentA();
getFragmentManager().beginTransaction()
    .replace(R.id.MainFrameLayout,fragmentA,"YOUR_TARGET_FRAGMENT_TAG")
    .addToBackStack("YOUR_SOURCE_FRAGMENT_TAG").commit();

How can I disable ARC for a single file in a project?

How to print a int64_t type in C

With C99 the %j length modifier can also be used with the printf family of functions to print values of type int64_t and uint64_t:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdint.h>

int main(int argc, char *argv[])
{
    int64_t  a = 1LL << 63;
    uint64_t b = 1ULL << 63;

    printf("a=%jd (0x%jx)\n", a, a);
    printf("b=%ju (0x%jx)\n", b, b);

    return 0;
}

Compiling this code with gcc -Wall -pedantic -std=c99 produces no warnings, and the program prints the expected output:

a=-9223372036854775808 (0x8000000000000000)
b=9223372036854775808 (0x8000000000000000)

This is according to printf(3) on my Linux system (the man page specifically says that j is used to indicate a conversion to an intmax_t or uintmax_t; in my stdint.h, both int64_t and intmax_t are typedef'd in exactly the same way, and similarly for uint64_t). I'm not sure if this is perfectly portable to other systems.

Spark - SELECT WHERE or filtering?

According to spark documentation "where() is an alias for filter()"

filter(condition) Filters rows using the given condition. where() is an alias for filter().

Parameters: condition – a Column of types.BooleanType or a string of SQL expression.

>>> df.filter(df.age > 3).collect()
[Row(age=5, name=u'Bob')]
>>> df.where(df.age == 2).collect()
[Row(age=2, name=u'Alice')]

>>> df.filter("age > 3").collect()
[Row(age=5, name=u'Bob')]
>>> df.where("age = 2").collect()
[Row(age=2, name=u'Alice')]

Remove empty elements from an array in Javascript

Another way to do it is to take advantage of the length property of the array : pack the non-null items on the 'left' of the array, then reduce the length. It is an in-place algorithm -does not allocates memory, too bad for the garbage collector-, and it has very good best/average/worst case behaviour.

This solution, compared to others here, is between 2 to 50 times faster on Chrome, and 5 to 50 times faster on Firefox, as you might see here : http://jsperf.com/remove-null-items-from-array

The code below adds the non-enumerable 'removeNull' method to the Array, which returns 'this' for daisy-chaining :

var removeNull = function() {
    var nullCount = 0           ;
    var length    = this.length ;
    for (var i=0, len=this.length; i<len; i++) { if (!this[i]) {nullCount++} }
    // no item is null
    if (!nullCount) { return this}
    // all items are null
    if (nullCount == length) { this.length = 0; return this }
    // mix of null // non-null
    var idest=0, isrc=length-1;
    length -= nullCount ;
    while (true) {
         // find a non null (source) slot on the right
         while (!this[isrc])  { isrc--; nullCount--; }
         if (!nullCount) { break } // break if found all null
         // find one null slot on the left (destination)
         while ( this[idest]) { idest++  }
         // perform copy
         this[idest]=this[isrc];
         if (!(--nullCount)) {break}
         idest++;  isrc --;
    }
    this.length=length;
    return this;
};

Object.defineProperty(Array.prototype, 'removeNull',
                { value : removeNull, writable : true, configurable : true } ) ;

How can I check if char* variable points to empty string?

My preferred method:

if (*ptr == 0) // empty string

Probably more common:

if (strlen(ptr) == 0) // empty string

Call a stored procedure with another in Oracle

@Michael Lockwood - you don't need to use the keyword "CALL" anywhere. You just need to mention the procedure call directly.

That is

Begin
   proc1(input1, input2);
end;
/

instead of

Begin
   call proc1(input1, input2);
end;
/

Export to csv in jQuery

Here are two WORKAROUNDS to the problem of triggering downloads from the client only. In later browsers you should look at "blob"

1. Drag and drop the table

Did you know you can simply DRAG your table into excel?

Here is how to select the table to either cut and past or drag

Select a complete table with Javascript (to be copied to clipboard)

2. create a popup page from your div

Although it will not produce a save dialog, if the resulting popup is saved with extension .csv, it will be treated correctly by Excel.

The string could be
w.document.write("row1.1\trow1.2\trow1.3\nrow2.1\trow2.2\trow2.3");
e.g. tab-delimited with a linefeed for the lines.

There are plugins that will create the string for you - such as http://plugins.jquery.com/project/table2csv

var w = window.open('','csvWindow'); // popup, may be blocked though
// the following line does not actually do anything interesting with the
// parameter given in current browsers, but really should have.
// Maybe in some browser it will. It does not hurt anyway to give the mime type
w.document.open("text/csv");
w.document.write(csvstring); // the csv string from for example a jquery plugin
w.document.close();

DISCLAIMER: These are workarounds, and does not fully answer the question which currently has the answer for most browser: not possible on the client only

Display curl output in readable JSON format in Unix shell script

I am guessing that you want to prettify the JSON output. That could be achieved using python:

curl http://localhost:8880/test.json | python -mjson.tool > out.json

getFilesDir() vs Environment.getDataDirectory()

getFilesDir()

Returns the absolute path to the directory on the filesystem where files created with openFileOutput(String, int) are stored.

Environment.getDataDirectory()

Return the user data directory.

Unable to establish SSL connection upon wget on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

Although this is almost certainly not the OPs issue, you can also get Unable to establish SSL connection from wget if you're behind a proxy and don't have HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY environment variables set correctly. Make sure to set HTTP_PROXY and HTTPS_PROXY to point to your proxy.

This is a common situation if you work for a large corporation.

Undefined index with $_POST

When you say:

$user = $_POST["username"];

You're asking the PHP interpreter to assign $user the value of the $_POST array that has a key (or index) of username. If it doesn't exist, PHP throws a fit.

Use isset($_POST['user']) to check for the existence of that variable:

if (isset($_POST['user'])) {
  $user = $_POST["username"];
  ...

Format string to a 3 digit number

Does it have to be String.Format?

This looks like a job for String.Padleft

myString=myString.PadLeft(3, '0');

Or, if you are converting direct from an int:

myInt.toString("D3");

multiple where condition codeigniter

you can use an array and pass the array.

Associative array method:
$array = array('name' => $name, 'title' => $title, 'status' => $status);

$this->db->where($array);

// Produces: WHERE name = 'Joe' AND title = 'boss' AND status = 'active'

Or if you want to do something other than = comparison

$array = array('name !=' => $name, 'id <' => $id, 'date >' => $date);

$this->db->where($array);

Java Read Large Text File With 70million line of text

This article is a great way to start.

Also, you need to create test cases in which you read first 10k(or something else, but shouldn't be too small) lines and calculate the reading times accordingly.

Threading might be a good way to go, but it's important that we know what you will be doing with the data.

Another thing to be considered is, how you will store that size of data.

SASS and @font-face

For those looking for an SCSS mixin instead, including woff2:

@mixin fface($path, $family, $type: '', $weight: 400, $svg: '', $style: normal) {
  @font-face {
    font-family: $family;
    @if $svg == '' {
      // with OTF without SVG and EOT
      src: url('#{$path}#{$type}.otf') format('opentype'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.woff2') format('woff2'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.woff') format('woff'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.ttf') format('truetype');
    } @else {
      // traditional src inclusions
      src: url('#{$path}#{$type}.eot');
      src: url('#{$path}#{$type}.eot?#iefix') format('embedded-opentype'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.woff2') format('woff2'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.woff') format('woff'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.ttf') format('truetype'), url('#{$path}#{$type}.svg##{$svg}') format('svg');
    }
    font-weight: $weight;
    font-style: $style;
  }
}
// ========================================================importing
$dir: '/assets/fonts/';
$famatic: 'AmaticSC';
@include fface('#{$dir}amatic-sc-v11-latin-regular', $famatic, '', 400, $famatic);

$finter: 'Inter';
// adding specific types of font-weights
@include fface('#{$dir}#{$finter}', $finter, '-Thin-BETA', 100);
@include fface('#{$dir}#{$finter}', $finter, '-Regular', 400);
@include fface('#{$dir}#{$finter}', $finter, '-Medium', 500);
@include fface('#{$dir}#{$finter}', $finter, '-Bold', 700);
// ========================================================usage
.title {
  font-family: Inter;
  font-weight: 700; // Inter-Bold font is loaded
}
.special-title {
  font-family: AmaticSC;
  font-weight: 700; // default font is loaded
}

The $type parameter is useful for stacking related families with different weights.

The @if is due to the need of supporting the Inter font (similar to Roboto), which has OTF but doesn't have SVG and EOT types at this time.

If you get a can't resolve error, remember to double check your fonts directory ($dir).

We face this issue but had different reason, here is the reason:

In our project found multiple bean entry with same bean name. 1 in applicationcontext.xml & 1 in dispatcherServlet.xml

Wait on the Database Engine recovery handle failed. Check the SQL server error log for potential causes

This post is high up when you google that error message, which I got when installing security patch KB4505224 on SQL Server 2017 Express i.e. None of the above worked for me, but did consume several hours trying.

The solution for me, partly from here was:

  1. uninstall SQL Server
  2. in Regional Settings / Management / System Locale, "Beta: UTF-8 support" should be OFF
  3. re-install SQL Server
  4. Let Windows install the patch.

And all was well.

More on this here.

Correct syntax to compare values in JSTL <c:if test="${values.type}=='object'">

The comparison needs to be evaluated fully inside EL ${ ... }, not outside.

<c:if test="${values.type eq 'object'}">

As to the docs, those ${} things are not JSTL, but EL (Expression Language) which is a whole subject at its own. JSTL (as every other JSP taglib) is just utilizing it. You can find some more EL examples here.

<c:if test="#{bean.booleanValue}" />
<c:if test="#{bean.intValue gt 10}" />
<c:if test="#{bean.objectValue eq null}" />
<c:if test="#{bean.stringValue ne 'someValue'}" />
<c:if test="#{not empty bean.collectionValue}" />
<c:if test="#{not bean.booleanValue and bean.intValue ne 0}" />
<c:if test="#{bean.enumValue eq 'ONE' or bean.enumValue eq 'TWO'}" />

By the way, unrelated to the concrete problem, if I guess your intent right, you could also just call Object#getClass() and then Class#getSimpleName() instead of adding a custom getter.

<c:forEach items="${list}" var="value">
    <c:if test="${value['class'].simpleName eq 'Object'}">
        <!-- code here -->
    </c:if>
</c:forEeach>

Import Google Play Services library in Android Studio

I solved the problem by installing the google play services package in sdk manager.

After it, create a new application & in the build.gradle add this

compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:4.3.+'

Like this

dependencies {
    compile 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:+'
    compile 'com.google.android.gms:play-services:4.3.+'
}

Cloning an Object in Node.js

Object.defineProperty(Object.prototype, "extend", {
    enumerable: false,
    value: function(from) {
        var props = Object.getOwnPropertyNames(from);
        var dest = this;
        props.forEach(function(name) {
            if (name in dest) {
                var destination = Object.getOwnPropertyDescriptor(from, name);
                Object.defineProperty(dest, name, destination);
            }
        });
        return this;
    }
});

This will define an extend method that you can use. Code comes from this article.

Getting Index of an item in an arraylist;

.indexOf() works well. If you want an example here is one:

  ArrayList<String> example = new ArrayList<String>();
  example.add("AB");
  example.add("CD");
  example.add("EF");
  example.add("GH");
  example.add("IJ");
  example.add("KL");
  example.add("MN");

  System.out.println("Index of 'AB': "+example.indexOf("AB"));
  System.out.println("Index of 'KL': "+example.indexOf("KL"));
  System.out.println("Index of 'AA': "+example.indexOf("AA"));
  System.out.println("Index of 'EF': "+example.indexOf("EF"));

will give you an output of

Index of 'AB': 0
Index of 'KL': 5
Index of 'AA': -1
Index of 'EF': 2

Note: This method returns -1 if the specified element is not present in the list.

How to set a primary key in MongoDB?

This is the syntax of creating primary key

db.< collection >.createIndex( < key and index type specification>, { unique: true } )

Let's take that our database have collection named student and it's document have key named student_id which we need to make a primary key. Then the command should be like below.

db.student.createIndex({student_id:1},{unique:true})

You can check whether this student_id set as primary key by trying to add duplicate value to the student collection.

How to render an array of objects in React?

You can do it in two ways:

First:

render() {
    const data =[{"name":"test1"},{"name":"test2"}];
    const listItems = data.map((d) => <li key={d.name}>{d.name}</li>);

    return (
      <div>
      {listItems }
      </div>
    );
  }

Second: Directly write the map function in the return

render() {
    const data =[{"name":"test1"},{"name":"test2"}];
    return (
      <div>
      {data.map(function(d, idx){
         return (<li key={idx}>{d.name}</li>)
       })}
      </div>
    );
  }

SyntaxError of Non-ASCII character

You should define source code encoding, add this to the top of your script:

# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-

The reason why it works differently in console and in the IDE is, likely, because of different default encodings set. You can check it by running:

import sys
print sys.getdefaultencoding()

Also see:

Get exit code of a background process

I would change your approach slightly. Rather than checking every few seconds if the command is still alive and reporting a message, have another process that reports every few seconds that the command is still running and then kill that process when the command finishes. For example:

#!/bin/sh

cmd() { sleep 5; exit 24; }

cmd & # Run the long running process
pid=$!  # Record the pid

# Spawn a process that coninually reports that the command is still running
while echo "$(date): $pid is still running"; do sleep 1; done &
echoer=$!

# Set a trap to kill the reporter when the process finishes
trap 'kill $echoer' 0

# Wait for the process to finish
if wait $pid; then
    echo "cmd succeeded"
else
    echo "cmd FAILED!! (returned $?)"

Using multiple case statements in select query

There are two ways to write case statements, you seem to be using a combination of the two

case a.updatedDate
    when 1760 then 'Entered on' + a.updatedDate
    when 1710 then 'Viewed on' + a.updatedDate
    else 'Last Updated on' + a.updateDate
end

or

case
    when a.updatedDate = 1760 then 'Entered on' + a.updatedDate
    when a.updatedDate = 1710 then 'Viewed on' + a.updatedDate
    else 'Last Updated on' + a.updateDate
end

are equivalent. They may not work because you may need to convert date types to varchars to append them to other varchars.

Best way to compare dates in Android

You could try this

Calendar today = Calendar.getInstance ();
today.add(Calendar.DAY_OF_YEAR, 0);
today.set(Calendar.HOUR_OF_DAY, hrs);
today.set(Calendar.MINUTE, mins );
today.set(Calendar.SECOND, 0);

and you could use today.getTime() to retrieve value and compare.

ggplot with 2 y axes on each side and different scales

The following article helped me to combine two plots generated by ggplot2 on a single row:

Multiple graphs on one page (ggplot2) by Cookbook for R

And here is what the code may look like in this case:

p1 <-
  ggplot() + aes(mns)+ geom_histogram(aes(y=..density..), binwidth=0.01, colour="black", fill="white") + geom_vline(aes(xintercept=mean(mns, na.rm=T)), color="red", linetype="dashed", size=1) +  geom_density(alpha=.2)

p2 <-
  ggplot() + aes(mns)+ geom_histogram( binwidth=0.01, colour="black", fill="white") + geom_vline(aes(xintercept=mean(mns, na.rm=T)), color="red", linetype="dashed", size=1)

multiplot(p1,p2,cols=2)

List vs tuple, when to use each?

Tuples are fixed size in nature whereas lists are dynamic.
In other words, a tuple is immutable whereas a list is mutable.

  1. You can't add elements to a tuple. Tuples have no append or extend method.
  2. You can't remove elements from a tuple. Tuples have no remove or pop method.
  3. You can find elements in a tuple, since this doesn’t change the tuple.
  4. You can also use the in operator to check if an element exists in the tuple.

  • Tuples are faster than lists. If you're defining a constant set of values and all you're ever going to do with it is iterate through it, use a tuple instead of a list.

  • It makes your code safer if you “write-protect” data that does not need to be changed. Using a tuple instead of a list is like having an implied assert statement that this data is constant, and that special thought (and a specific function) is required to override that.

  • Some tuples can be used as dictionary keys (specifically, tuples that contain immutable values like strings, numbers, and other tuples). Lists can never be used as dictionary keys, because lists are not immutable.

How to update parent's state in React?

-We can create ParentComponent and with handleInputChange method to update the ParentComponent state. Import the ChildComponent and we pass two props from parent to child component ie.handleInputChange function and count.

import React, { Component } from 'react';
import ChildComponent from './ChildComponent';

class ParentComponent extends Component {
  constructor(props) {
    super(props);
    this.handleInputChange = this.handleInputChange.bind(this);
    this.state = {
      count: '',
    };
  }

  handleInputChange(e) {
    const { value, name } = e.target;
    this.setState({ [name]: value });
  }

  render() {
    const { count } = this.state;
    return (
      <ChildComponent count={count} handleInputChange={this.handleInputChange} />
    );
  }
}
  • Now we create the ChildComponent file and save as ChildComponent.jsx. This component is stateless because the child component doesn't have a state. We use the prop-types library for props type checking.

    import React from 'react';
    import { func, number } from 'prop-types';

    const ChildComponent = ({ handleInputChange, count }) => (
      <input onChange={handleInputChange} value={count} name="count" />
    );

    ChildComponent.propTypes = {
      count: number,
      handleInputChange: func.isRequired,
    };

    ChildComponent.defaultProps = {
      count: 0,
    };

    export default ChildComponent;

SQL Server IIF vs CASE

IIF is the same as CASE WHEN <Condition> THEN <true part> ELSE <false part> END. The query plan will be the same. It is, perhaps, "syntactical sugar" as initially implemented.

CASE is portable across all SQL platforms whereas IIF is SQL SERVER 2012+ specific.

How do I convert strings between uppercase and lowercase in Java?

Yes. There are methods on the String itself for this.

Note that the result depends on the Locale the JVM is using. Beware, locales is an art in itself.

What is the correct value for the disabled attribute?

  • For XHTML, <input type="text" disabled="disabled" /> is the valid markup.
  • For HTML5, <input type="text" disabled /> is valid and used by W3C on their samples.
  • In fact, both ways works on all major browsers.

How do you set the startup page for debugging in an ASP.NET MVC application?

Selecting a specific page from Project properties does not solve my problem.

In MVC 4 open App_Start/RouteConfig.cs

For example, if you want to change startup page to Login:

routes.MapRoute(

Moving from position A to position B slowly with animation

You can animate it after the fadeIn completes using the callback as shown below:

$("#Friends").fadeIn('slow',function(){
  $(this).animate({'top': '-=30px'},'slow');
});

Find the 2nd largest element in an array with minimum number of comparisons

It can be done in n + ceil(log n) - 2 comparison.

Solution: it takes n-1 comparisons to get minimum.

But to get minimum we will build a tournament in which each element will be grouped in pairs. like a tennis tournament and winner of any round will go forward.

Height of this tree will be log n since we half at each round.

Idea to get second minimum is that it will be beaten by minimum candidate in one of previous round. So, we need to find minimum in potential candidates (beaten by minimum).

Potential candidates will be log n = height of tree

So, no. of comparison to find minimum using tournament tree is n-1 and for second minimum is log n -1 sums up = n + ceil(log n) - 2

Exception: Unexpected end of ZLIB input stream

You have to call close() on the GZIPOutputStream before you attempt to read it. The final bytes of the file will only be written when the file is actually closed. (This is irrespective of any explicit buffering in the output stack. The stream only knows to compress and write the last bytes when you tell it to close. A flush() probably won't help ... though calling finish() instead of close() should work. Look at the javadocs.)

Here's the correct code (in Java);

package test;

import java.io.FileInputStream;
import java.io.FileNotFoundException;
import java.io.FileOutputStream;
import java.io.IOException;
import java.util.zip.GZIPInputStream;
import java.util.zip.GZIPOutputStream;

public class GZipTest {

    public static void main(String[] args) throws
                FileNotFoundException, IOException {
        String name = "/tmp/test";
        GZIPOutputStream gz = new GZIPOutputStream(new FileOutputStream(name));
        gz.write(10);
        gz.close(); // Remove this to reproduce the reported bug
        System.out.println(new GZIPInputStream(new FileInputStream(name)).read());
    }
}

(I've not implemented resource management or exception handling / reporting properly as they are not relevant to the purpose of this code. Don't treat this as an example of "good code".)

How to create CSV Excel file C#?

How to output git log with the first line only?

Have you tried this?

git log --pretty=oneline --abbrev-commit

The problem is probably that you are missing an empty line after the first line. The command above usually works for me, but I just tested on a commit without empty second line. I got the same result as you: the whole message on one line.

Empty second line is a standard in git commit messages. The behaviour you see was probably implemented on purpose.

The first line of a commit message is meant to be a short description. If you cannot make it in a single line you can use several, but git considers everything before the first empty line to be the "short description". oneline prints the whole short description, so all your 3 rows.

How to write to the Output window in Visual Studio?

Useful tip - if you use __FILE__ and __LINE__ then format your debug as:

"file(line): Your output here"

then when you click on that line in the output window Visual Studio will jump directly to that line of code. An example:

#include <Windows.h>
#include <iostream>
#include <sstream>

void DBOut(const char *file, const int line, const WCHAR *s)
{
    std::wostringstream os_;
    os_ << file << "(" << line << "): ";
    os_ << s;
    OutputDebugStringW(os_.str().c_str());
}

#define DBOUT(s)       DBOut(__FILE__, __LINE__, s)

I wrote a blog post about this so I always knew where I could look it up: https://windowscecleaner.blogspot.co.nz/2013/04/debug-output-tricks-for-visual-studio.html

Generate C# class from XML

To convert XML into a C# Class:

  • Navigate to the Microsoft Visual Studio Marketplace: -- https://marketplace.visualstudio.com
  • In the search bar enter text: -- xml to class code tool
  • Download, install, and use the app

Note: in the fullness of time, this app may be replaced, but chances are, there'll be another tool that does the same thing.

Correct way to try/except using Python requests module?

Have a look at the Requests exception docs. In short:

In the event of a network problem (e.g. DNS failure, refused connection, etc), Requests will raise a ConnectionError exception.

In the event of the rare invalid HTTP response, Requests will raise an HTTPError exception.

If a request times out, a Timeout exception is raised.

If a request exceeds the configured number of maximum redirections, a TooManyRedirects exception is raised.

All exceptions that Requests explicitly raises inherit from requests.exceptions.RequestException.

To answer your question, what you show will not cover all of your bases. You'll only catch connection-related errors, not ones that time out.

What to do when you catch the exception is really up to the design of your script/program. Is it acceptable to exit? Can you go on and try again? If the error is catastrophic and you can't go on, then yes, you may abort your program by raising SystemExit (a nice way to both print an error and call sys.exit).

You can either catch the base-class exception, which will handle all cases:

try:
    r = requests.get(url, params={'s': thing})
except requests.exceptions.RequestException as e: # This is the correct syntax
    raise SystemExit(e)

Or you can catch them separately and do different things.

try:
    r = requests.get(url, params={'s': thing})
except requests.exceptions.Timeout:
    # Maybe set up for a retry, or continue in a retry loop
except requests.exceptions.TooManyRedirects:
    # Tell the user their URL was bad and try a different one
except requests.exceptions.RequestException as e:
    # catastrophic error. bail.
    raise SystemExit(e)

As Christian pointed out:

If you want http errors (e.g. 401 Unauthorized) to raise exceptions, you can call Response.raise_for_status. That will raise an HTTPError, if the response was an http error.

An example:

try:
    r = requests.get('http://www.google.com/nothere')
    r.raise_for_status()
except requests.exceptions.HTTPError as err:
    raise SystemExit(err)

Will print:

404 Client Error: Not Found for url: http://www.google.com/nothere

Android ViewPager with bottom dots

Following is my proposed solution.

  • Since we need to show only some images in the view pagers so have avoided the cumbersome use of fragments.
    • Implemented the view page indicators (the bottom dots without any extra library or plugin)
    • On the touch of the view page indicators(the dots) also the page navigation is happening.
    • Please don"t forget to add your own images in the resources.
    • Feel free to comment and improve upon it.

Create two-dimensional arrays and access sub-arrays in Ruby

There are some problems with 2 dimensional Arrays the way you implement them.

a= [[1,2],[3,4]]
a[0][2]= 5 # works
a[2][0]= 6 # error

Hash as Array

I prefer to use Hashes for multi dimensional Arrays

a= Hash.new
a[[1,2]]= 23
a[[5,6]]= 42

This has the advantage, that you don't have to manually create columns or rows. Inserting into hashes is almost O(1), so there is no drawback here, as long as your Hash does not become too big.

You can even set a default value for all not specified elements

a= Hash.new(0)

So now about how to get subarrays

(3..5).to_a.product([2]).collect { |index| a[index] }
[2].product((3..5).to_a).collect { |index| a[index] }

(a..b).to_a runs in O(n). Retrieving an element from an Hash is almost O(1), so the collect runs in almost O(n). There is no way to make it faster than O(n), as copying n elements always is O(n).

Hashes can have problems when they are getting too big. So I would think twice about implementing a multidimensional Array like this, if I knew my amount of data is getting big.

Remove property for all objects in array

ES6:

const newArray = array.map(({keepAttr1, keepAttr2}) => ({keepAttr1, newPropName: keepAttr2}))

How to change ViewPager's page?

Without checking your code, I think what you are describing is that your pages are out of sync and you have stale data.

You say you are changing the number of pages, then crashing because you are accessing the old set of pages. This sounds to me like you are not calling pageAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged() after changing your data.

When your viewPager is showing page 3 of a set of 10 pages, and you change to a set with only 5, then call notifyDataSetChanged(), what you'll find is you are now viewing page 3 of the new set. If you were previously viewing page 8 of the old set, after putting in the new set and calling notifyDataSetChanged() you will find you are now viewing the last page of the new set without crashing.

If you simply change your current page, you may just be masking the problem.

Service will not start: error 1067: the process terminated unexpectedly

In my case the error 1067 was caused with a specific version of Tomcat 7.0.96 32-bit in combination with AdoptOpenJDK. Spent two hours on it, un-installing, re-installing and trying different Java settings but Tomcat would not start. See... ASF Bugzilla – Bug 63625 seems to point at the issue though they refer to seeing a different error.

I tried 7.0.99 32-bit and it started straight away with the same AdoptOpenJDK 32-bit binary install.

Cannot start session without errors in phpMyAdmin

Login fails if session folder in not writeable. To check that, create a PHP file in your web directory with:

<?php

Java Process with Input/Output Stream

Firstly, I would recommend replacing the line

Process process = Runtime.getRuntime ().exec ("/bin/bash");

with the lines

ProcessBuilder builder = new ProcessBuilder("/bin/bash");
builder.redirectErrorStream(true);
Process process = builder.start();

ProcessBuilder is new in Java 5 and makes running external processes easier. In my opinion, its most significant improvement over Runtime.getRuntime().exec() is that it allows you to redirect the standard error of the child process into its standard output. This means you only have one InputStream to read from. Before this, you needed to have two separate Threads, one reading from stdout and one reading from stderr, to avoid the standard error buffer filling while the standard output buffer was empty (causing the child process to hang), or vice versa.

Next, the loops (of which you have two)

while ((line = reader.readLine ()) != null) {
    System.out.println ("Stdout: " + line);
}

only exit when the reader, which reads from the process's standard output, returns end-of-file. This only happens when the bash process exits. It will not return end-of-file if there happens at present to be no more output from the process. Instead, it will wait for the next line of output from the process and not return until it has this next line.

Since you're sending two lines of input to the process before reaching this loop, the first of these two loops will hang if the process hasn't exited after these two lines of input. It will sit there waiting for another line to be read, but there will never be another line for it to read.

I compiled your source code (I'm on Windows at the moment, so I replaced /bin/bash with cmd.exe, but the principles should be the same), and I found that:

  • after typing in two lines, the output from the first two commands appears, but then the program hangs,
  • if I type in, say, echo test, and then exit, the program makes it out of the first loop since the cmd.exe process has exited. The program then asks for another line of input (which gets ignored), skips straight over the second loop since the child process has already exited, and then exits itself.
  • if I type in exit and then echo test, I get an IOException complaining about a pipe being closed. This is to be expected - the first line of input caused the process to exit, and there's nowhere to send the second line.

I have seen a trick that does something similar to what you seem to want, in a program I used to work on. This program kept around a number of shells, ran commands in them and read the output from these commands. The trick used was to always write out a 'magic' line that marks the end of the shell command's output, and use that to determine when the output from the command sent to the shell had finished.

I took your code and I replaced everything after the line that assigns to writer with the following loop:

while (scan.hasNext()) {
    String input = scan.nextLine();
    if (input.trim().equals("exit")) {
        // Putting 'exit' amongst the echo --EOF--s below doesn't work.
        writer.write("exit\n");
    } else {
        writer.write("((" + input + ") && echo --EOF--) || echo --EOF--\n");
    }
    writer.flush();

    line = reader.readLine();
    while (line != null && ! line.trim().equals("--EOF--")) {
        System.out.println ("Stdout: " + line);
        line = reader.readLine();
    }
    if (line == null) {
        break;
    }
}

After doing this, I could reliably run a few commands and have the output from each come back to me individually.

The two echo --EOF-- commands in the line sent to the shell are there to ensure that output from the command is terminated with --EOF-- even in the result of an error from the command.

Of course, this approach has its limitations. These limitations include:

  • if I enter a command that waits for user input (e.g. another shell), the program appears to hang,
  • it assumes that each process run by the shell ends its output with a newline,
  • it gets a bit confused if the command being run by the shell happens to write out a line --EOF--.
  • bash reports a syntax error and exits if you enter some text with an unmatched ).

These points might not matter to you if whatever it is you're thinking of running as a scheduled task is going to be restricted to a command or a small set of commands which will never behave in such pathological ways.

EDIT: improve exit handling and other minor changes following running this on Linux.

jquery: change the URL address without redirecting?

That site makes use of the "fragment" part of a url: the stuff after the "#". This is not sent to the server by the browser as part of the GET request, but can be used to store page state. So yes you can change the fragment without causing a page refresh or reload. When the page loads, your javascript reads this fragment and updates the page content appropriately, fetching data from the server via ajax requests as required. To read the fragment in js:

var fragment = location.hash;

but note that this value will include the "#" character at the beginning. To set the fragment:

location.hash = "your_state_data";

What causes the error "undefined reference to (some function)"?

It's a linker error. ld is the linker, so if you get an error message ending with "ld returned 1 exit status", that tells you that it's a linker error.

The error message tells you that none of the object files you're linking against contains a definition for avergecolumns. The reason for that is that the function you've defined is called averagecolumns (in other words: you misspelled the function name when calling the function (and presumably in the header file as well - otherwise you'd have gotten a different error at compile time)).

Can the Twitter Bootstrap Carousel plugin fade in and out on slide transition

Note: If you are using Bootstrap + AngularJS + UI Bootstrap, .left .right and .next classes are never added. Using the example at the following link and the CSS from Robert McKee answer works. I wanted to comment because it took 3 days to find a full solution. Hope this helps others!

https://angular-ui.github.io/bootstrap/#/carousel

Code snip from UI Bootstrap Demo at the above link.

angular.module('ui.bootstrap.demo').controller('CarouselDemoCtrl', function ($scope) {
  $scope.myInterval = 5000;
  var slides = $scope.slides = [];
  $scope.addSlide = function() {
    var newWidth = 600 + slides.length + 1;
    slides.push({
      image: 'http://placekitten.com/' + newWidth + '/300',
      text: ['More','Extra','Lots of','Surplus'][slides.length % 4] + ' ' +
        ['Cats', 'Kittys', 'Felines', 'Cutes'][slides.length % 4]
    });
  };
  for (var i=0; i<4; i++) {
    $scope.addSlide();
  }
});

Html From UI Bootstrap, Notice I added the .fade class to the example.

<div ng-controller="CarouselDemoCtrl">
    <div style="height: 305px">
        <carousel class="fade" interval="myInterval">
          <slide ng-repeat="slide in slides" active="slide.active">
            <img ng-src="{{slide.image}}" style="margin:auto;">
            <div class="carousel-caption">
              <h4>Slide {{$index}}</h4>
              <p>{{slide.text}}</p>
            </div>
          </slide>
        </carousel>
    </div>
</div>

CSS from Robert McKee's answer above

.carousel.fade {
opacity: 1;
}
.carousel.fade .item {
-moz-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
-o-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;

JPA 2.0, Criteria API, Subqueries, In Expressions

Below is the pseudo-code for using sub-query using Criteria API.

CriteriaBuilder criteriaBuilder = entityManager.getCriteriaBuilder();
CriteriaQuery<Object> criteriaQuery = criteriaBuilder.createQuery();
Root<EMPLOYEE> from = criteriaQuery.from(EMPLOYEE.class);
Path<Object> path = from.get("compare_field"); // field to map with sub-query
from.fetch("name");
from.fetch("id");
CriteriaQuery<Object> select = criteriaQuery.select(from);

Subquery<PROJECT> subquery = criteriaQuery.subquery(PROJECT.class);
Root fromProject = subquery.from(PROJECT.class);
subquery.select(fromProject.get("requiredColumnName")); // field to map with main-query
subquery.where(criteriaBuilder.and(criteriaBuilder.equal("name",name_value),criteriaBuilder.equal("id",id_value)));

select.where(criteriaBuilder.in(path).value(subquery));

TypedQuery<Object> typedQuery = entityManager.createQuery(select);
List<Object> resultList = typedQuery.getResultList();

Also it definitely needs some modification as I have tried to map it according to your query. Here is a link http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-typesafejpa/ which explains concept nicely.

} else {

Using PowerShell credentials without being prompted for a password

The problem with Get-Credential is that it will always prompt for a password. There is a way around this however but it involves storing the password as a secure string on the filesystem.

The following article explains how this works:

Using PSCredentials without a prompt

In summary, you create a file to store your password (as an encrypted string). The following line will prompt for a password then store it in c:\mysecurestring.txt as an encrypted string. You only need to do this once:

read-host -assecurestring | convertfrom-securestring | out-file C:\mysecurestring.txt

Wherever you see a -Credential argument on a PowerShell command then it means you can pass a PSCredential. So in your case:

$username = "domain01\admin01"
$password = Get-Content 'C:\mysecurestring.txt' | ConvertTo-SecureString
$cred = new-object -typename System.Management.Automation.PSCredential `
         -argumentlist $username, $password

$serverNameOrIp = "192.168.1.1"
Restart-Computer -ComputerName $serverNameOrIp `
                 -Authentication default `
                 -Credential $cred
                 <any other parameters relevant to you>

You may need a different -Authentication switch value because I don't know your environment.

How do I use regular expressions in bash scripts?

It was changed between 3.1 and 3.2:

This is a terse description of the new features added to bash-3.2 since the release of bash-3.1.

Quoting the string argument to the [[ command's =~ operator now forces string matching, as with the other pattern-matching operators.

So use it without the quotes thus:

i="test"
if [[ $i =~ 200[78] ]] ; then
    echo "OK"
else
    echo "not OK"

CSS strikethrough different color from text?

Here's an approach which uses a gradient to fake the line. It works with multiline strikes and doesn't need additional DOM elements. But as it's a background gradient, it's behind the text...

del, strike {
  text-decoration: none;
  line-height: 1.4;
  background-image: -webkit-gradient(linear, left top, left bottom, from(transparent), color-stop(0.63em, transparent), color-stop(0.63em, #ff0000), color-stop(0.7em, #ff0000), color-stop(0.7em, transparent), to(transparent));
  background-image: -webkit-linear-gradient(top, transparent 0em, transparent 0.63em, #ff0000 0.63em, #ff0000 0.7em, transparent 0.7em, transparent 1.4em);
  background-image: -o-linear-gradient(top, transparent 0em, transparent 0.63em, #ff0000 0.63em, #ff0000 0.7em, transparent 0.7em, transparent 1.4em);
  background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom, transparent 0em, transparent 0.63em, #ff0000 0.63em, #ff0000 0.7em, transparent 0.7em, transparent 1.4em);
  -webkit-background-size: 1.4em 1.4em;
  background-size: 1.4em 1.4em;
  background-repeat: repeat;
}

See fiddle: http://jsfiddle.net/YSvaY/

Gradient color-stops and background size depend on line-height. (I used LESS for calculation and Autoprefixer afterwards...)

Generate a sequence of numbers in Python

Includes some guessing on the exact sequence you are expecting:

>>> l.sort()
>>> ','.join(map(str, l))
'1,2,5,6,9,10,13,14,17,18,21,22,25,26,29,30,33,34,37,38,41,42,45,46,49,50,53,54,57,58,61,62,65,66,69,70,73,74,77,78,81,82,85,86,89,90,93,94,97,98'

As one-liner:

>>> ','.join(map(str, sorted(list(range(1, 100, 4))) + list(range(2, 100, 4))))

(btw. this is Python 3 compatible)

Then:

$item1 = $_POST['arrayname']['item1'];
$item2 = $_POST['arrayname']['item2'];
$item3 = $_POST['arrayname']['item3'];

But I fail to see the point.

GitHub - List commits by author

If the author has a GitHub account, just click the author's username from anywhere in the commit history, and the commits you can see will be filtered down to those by that author:

Screenshot showing where to click to filter down commits

You can also click the 'n commits' link below their name on the repo's "contributors" page:

Another screenshot

Alternatively, you can directly append ?author=<theusername> or ?author=<emailaddress> to the URL. For example, https://github.com/jquery/jquery/commits/master?author=dmethvin or https://github.com/jquery/jquery/commits/[email protected] both give me:

Screenshot with only Dave Methvin's commits

For authors without a GitHub account, only filtering by email address will work, and you will need to manually add ?author=<emailaddress> to the URL - the author's name will not be clickable from the commits list.

You can also get the list of commits by a particular author from the command line using

git log --author=[your git name]

Example:

git log --author=Prem

How to generate an entity-relationship (ER) diagram using Oracle SQL Developer

There is a companion tool called Oracle Data Modeler that you could take a look at. There are online demos available at the site that will get you started. It used to be an added cost item, but I noticed that once again it's free.

From the Data Modeler overview page:

SQL Developer Data Modeler is a free data modeling and design tool, proving a full spectrum of data and database modeling tools and utilities, including modeling for Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), Relational (database design), Data Type and Multi-dimensional modeling, with forward and reverse engineering and DDL code generation. The Data Modeler imports from and exports to a variety of sources and targets, provides a variety of formatting options and validates the models through a predefined set of design rules.

With dplyr 0.5.0, you can use coalesce function which can be easily integrated into %>% pipeline by doing coalesce(vec, 0). This replaces all NAs in vec with 0:

Say we have a data frame with NAs:

library(dplyr)
df <- data.frame(v = c(1, 2, 3, NA, 5, 6, 8))

df
#    v
# 1  1
# 2  2
# 3  3
# 4 NA
# 5  5
# 6  6
# 7  8

df %>% mutate(v = coalesce(v, 0))
#   v
# 1 1
# 2 2
# 3 3
# 4 0
# 5 5
# 6 6
# 7 8

"Least Astonishment" and the Mutable Default Argument

I am going to demonstrate an alternative structure to pass a default list value to a function (it works equally well with dictionaries).

As others have extensively commented, the list parameter is bound to the function when it is defined as opposed to when it is executed. Because lists and dictionaries are mutable, any alteration to this parameter will affect other calls to this function. As a result, subsequent calls to the function will receive this shared list which may have been altered by any other calls to the function. Worse yet, two parameters are using this function's shared parameter at the same time oblivious to the changes made by the other.

Wrong Method (probably...):

def foo(list_arg=[5]):
    return list_arg

a = foo()
a.append(6)
>>> a
[5, 6]

b = foo()
b.append(7)
# The value of 6 appended to variable 'a' is now part of the list held by 'b'.
>>> b
[5, 6, 7]

# Although 'a' is expecting to receive 6 (the last element it appended to the list),
# it actually receives the last element appended to the shared list.
# It thus receives the value 7 previously appended by 'b'.
>>> a.pop()
7

You can verify that they are one and the same object by using id:

>>> id(a)
5347866528

>>> id(b)
5347866528

Per Brett Slatkin's "Effective Python: 59 Specific Ways to Write Better Python", Item 20: Use None and Docstrings to specify dynamic default arguments (p. 48)

The convention for achieving the desired result in Python is to provide a default value of None and to document the actual behaviour in the docstring.

This implementation ensures that each call to the function either receives the default list or else the list passed to the function.

Preferred Method:

def foo(list_arg=None):
   """
   :param list_arg: A list of input values.
                     If none provided, used a list with a default value of 5.
   """
   if not list_arg:
       list_arg = [5]
   return list_arg

a = foo()
a.append(6)
>>> a
[5, 6]

b = foo()
b.append(7)
>>> b
[5, 7]

c = foo([10])
c.append(11)
>>> c
[10, 11]

There may be legitimate use cases for the 'Wrong Method' whereby the programmer intended the default list parameter to be shared, but this is more likely the exception than the rule.

Is it possible to find out the users who have checked out my project on GitHub?

Use the GitHub Network Graph to Track Forks

You have no way to see who has checked out your repository using standard git commands such as git clone, but you can see who has forked your repository on GitHub using the Network Graph Visualizer. At the time of this answer, you can access this feature in at least two ways:

  1. From the "Network" tab just to the right of the "Code" tab on the navigation bar at the top of your repository.
  2. By clicking on the numbers (if non-zero) in the call-out just to the right of the "Fork" widget on the right-hand side.

For example, here is a partial screenshot of the rbenv network graph:

rbenv network graph

The "Members" tab at the top of the Network Graph will also show you a different view, listing the names of the people who currently have forks on GitHub. It obviously will not show people who cloned outside of GitHub, or folks who have subsequently deleted their forks.

Google maps Places API V3 autocomplete - select first option on enter

It seems there is a much better and clean solution: To use google.maps.places.SearchBox instead of google.maps.places.Autocomplete. A code is almost the same, just getting the first from multiple places. On pressing the Enter the the correct list is returned - so it runs out of the box and there is no need for hacks.

See the example HTML page:

http://rawgithub.com/klokan/8408394/raw/5ab795fb36c67ad73c215269f61c7648633ae53e/places-enter-first-item.html

The relevant code snippet is:

var searchBox = new google.maps.places.SearchBox(document.getElementById('searchinput'));

google.maps.event.addListener(searchBox, 'places_changed', function() {
  var place = searchBox.getPlaces()[0];

  if (!place.geometry) return;

  if (place.geometry.viewport) {
    map.fitBounds(place.geometry.viewport);
  } else {
    map.setCenter(place.geometry.location);
    map.setZoom(16);
  }
});

Sort a list by multiple attributes?

Several years late to the party but I want to both sort on 2 criteria and use reverse=True. In case someone else wants to know how, you can wrap your criteria (functions) in parenthesis:

s = sorted(my_list, key=lambda i: ( criteria_1(i), criteria_2(i) ), reverse=True)

Declare a const array

This is the only correct answer. You cannot currently do this.

All the other answers are suggesting using static read-only variables which are similar to, but not the same as a constant. A constant is hard coded into the assembly. A static read only variable is settable once, probably as an object is is initialized.

These are sometimes interchangeable, but not always.

Finish all activities at a time

Whenever you wish to exit all open activities, you should press a button which loads the first Activity that runs when your application starts then clear all the other activities, then have the last remaining activity finish. to do so apply the following code in ur project

Intent intent = new Intent(getApplicationContext(), FirstActivity.class);
intent.setFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TOP);
intent.putExtra("EXIT", true);
startActivity(intent);

The above code finishes all the activities except for FirstActivity. Then we need to finish the FirstActivity's Enter the below code in Firstactivity's oncreate

if (getIntent().getBooleanExtra("EXIT", false)) {
    finish();
}

and you are done....

Exception is: InvalidOperationException - The current type, is an interface and cannot be constructed. Are you missing a type mapping?

You are incorrectly using Dependency Injection. The proper way is to have your controllers take the dependencies they need and leave to the dependency injection framework inject the concrete instances:

public class HomeController: Controller
{
    private readonly ISettingsManager settingsManager;
    public HomeController(ISettingsManager settingsManager)
    {
        this.settingsManager = settingsManager;
    }

    public ActionResult Index()
    {
        // you could use the this.settingsManager here
    }
}

As you can see in this example the controller doesn't know anything about the container. And that's how it should be.

All the DI wiring should happen in your Bootstraper. You should never use container.Resolve<> calls in your code.

As far as your error is concerned, probably the mUnityContainer you are using inside your controller is not the same instance as the one constructed in your Bootstraper. But since you shouldn't be using any container code in your controllers, this shouldn't be a problem anymore.

UPDATE if exists else INSERT in SQL Server 2008

Many people will suggest you use MERGE, but I caution you against it. By default, it doesn't protect you from concurrency and race conditions any more than multiple statements, but it does introduce other dangers:

http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/3074/use-caution-with-sql-servers-merge-statement/

Even with this "simpler" syntax available, I still prefer this approach (error handling omitted for brevity):

SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
UPDATE dbo.table SET ... WHERE PK = @PK;
IF @@ROWCOUNT = 0
BEGIN
  INSERT dbo.table(PK, ...) SELECT @PK, ...;
END
COMMIT TRANSACTION;

A lot of folks will suggest this way:

SET TRANSACTION ISOLATION LEVEL SERIALIZABLE;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM dbo.table WHERE PK = @PK)
BEGIN
  UPDATE ...
END
ELSE
BEGIN
  INSERT ...
END
COMMIT TRANSACTION;

But all this accomplishes is ensuring you may need to read the table twice to locate the row(s) to be updated. In the first sample, you will only ever need to locate the row(s) once. (In both cases, if no rows are found from the initial read, an insert occurs.)

Others will suggest this way:

BEGIN TRY
  INSERT ...
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
  IF ERROR_NUMBER() = 2627
    UPDATE ...
END CATCH

However, this is problematic if for no other reason than letting SQL Server catch exceptions that you could have prevented in the first place is much more expensive, except in the rare scenario where almost every insert fails. I prove as much here:

Not sure what you think you gain by having a single statement; I don't think you gain anything. MERGE is a single statement but it still has to really perform multiple operations anyway - even though it makes you think it doesn't.

How to coerce a list object to type 'double'

How to use if statements in underscore.js templates?

Responding to blackdivine above (about how to stripe one's results), you may have already found your answer (if so, shame on you for not sharing!), but the easiest way of doing so is by using the modulus operator. say, for example, you're working in a for loop:

<% for(i=0, l=myLongArray.length; i<l; ++i) { %>
...
<% } %>

Within that loop, simply check the value of your index (i, in my case):

<% if(i%2) { %>class="odd"<% } else { %>class="even" <% }%>

Doing this will check the remainder of my index divided by two (toggling between 1 and 0 for each index row).

What are the rules for JavaScript's automatic semicolon insertion (ASI)?

First of all you should know which statements are affected by the automatic semicolon insertion (also known as ASI for brevity):

  • empty statement
  • var statement
  • expression statement
  • do-while statement
  • continue statement
  • break statement
  • return statement
  • throw statement

The concrete rules of ASI, are described in the specification §11.9.1 Rules of Automatic Semicolon Insertion

Three cases are described:

  1. When an offending token is encountered that is not allowed by the grammar, a semicolon is inserted before it if:
  • The token is separated from the previous token by at least one LineTerminator.
  • The token is }

e.g.:

    { 1
    2 } 3

is transformed to

    { 1
    ;2 ;} 3;

The NumericLiteral 1 meets the first condition, the following token is a line terminator.
The 2 meets the second condition, the following token is }.

  1. When the end of the input stream of tokens is encountered and the parser is unable to parse the input token stream as a single complete Program, then a semicolon is automatically inserted at the end of the input stream.

e.g.:

    a = b
    ++c

is transformed to:

    a = b;
    ++c;
  1. This case occurs when a token is allowed by some production of the grammar, but the production is a restricted production, a semicolon is automatically inserted before the restricted token.

Restricted productions:

    UpdateExpression :
        LeftHandSideExpression [no LineTerminator here] ++
        LeftHandSideExpression [no LineTerminator here] --

    ContinueStatement :
        continue ;
        continue [no LineTerminator here] LabelIdentifier ;

    BreakStatement :
        break ;
        break [no LineTerminator here] LabelIdentifier ;

    ReturnStatement :
        return ;
        return [no LineTerminator here] Expression ;

    ThrowStatement :
        throw [no LineTerminator here] Expression ;

    ArrowFunction :
        ArrowParameters [no LineTerminator here] => ConciseBody

    YieldExpression :
        yield [no LineTerminator here] * AssignmentExpression
        yield [no LineTerminator here] AssignmentExpression

The classic example, with the ReturnStatement:

    return
      "something";

is transformed to

    return;
      "something";

Is it bad practice to use break to exit a loop in Java?

Good lord no. Sometimes there is a possibility that something can occur in the loop that satisfies the overall requirement, without satisfying the logical loop condition. In that case, break is used, to stop you cycling around a loop pointlessly.

Example

String item;

for(int x = 0; x < 10; x++)
{
    // Linear search.
    if(array[x].equals("Item I am looking for"))
    {
       //you've found the item. Let's stop.
       item = array[x];
       break;
    }
}

What makes more sense in this example. Continue looping to 10 every time, even after you've found it, or loop until you find the item and stop? Or to put it into real world terms; when you find your keys, do you keep looking?

Edit in response to comment

Why not set x to 11 to break the loop? It's pointless. We've got break! Unless your code is making the assumption that x is definitely larger than 10 later on (and it probably shouldn't be) then you're fine just using break.

Edit for the sake of completeness

There are definitely other ways to simulate break. For example, adding extra logic to your termination condition in your loop. Saying that it is either loop pointlessly or use break isn't fair. As pointed out, a while loop can often achieve similar functionality. For example, following the above example..

while(x < 10 && item == null)
{
    if(array[x].equals("Item I am looking for"))
    {
        item = array[x];
    }

    x++;
}

Using break simply means you can achieve this functionality with a for loop. It also means you don't have to keep adding in conditions into your termination logic, whenever you want the loop to behave differently. For example.

for(int x = 0; x < 10; x++)
{
   if(array[x].equals("Something that will make me want to cancel"))
   {
       break;
   }
   else if(array[x].equals("Something else that will make me want to cancel"))
   {
       break;
   }
   else if(array[x].equals("This is what I want"))
   {
       item = array[x];
   }
}

Rather than a while loop with a termination condition that looks like this:

while(x < 10 && !array[x].equals("Something that will make me want to cancel") &&
                !array[x].equals("Something else that will make me want to cancel"))

Format LocalDateTime with Timezone in Java8

The prefix "Local" in JSR-310 (aka java.time-package in Java-8) does not indicate that there is a timezone information in internal state of that class (here: LocalDateTime). Despite the often misleading name such classes like LocalDateTime or LocalTime have NO timezone information or offset.

You tried to format such a temporal type (which does not contain any offset) with offset information (indicated by pattern symbol Z). So the formatter tries to access an unavailable information and has to throw the exception you observed.

Solution:

Use a type which has such an offset or timezone information. In JSR-310 this is either OffsetDateTime (which contains an offset but not a timezone including DST-rules) or ZonedDateTime. You can watch out all supported fields of such a type by look-up on the method isSupported(TemporalField).. The field OffsetSeconds is supported in OffsetDateTime and ZonedDateTime, but not in LocalDateTime.

DateTimeFormatter formatter = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("yyyyMMdd HH:mm:ss.SSSSSS Z");
String s = ZonedDateTime.now().format(formatter);

Change URL parameters

2020 Solution: sets the variable or removes iti if you pass null or undefined to the value.

var setSearchParam = function(key, value) {
    if (!window.history.pushState) {
        return;
    }

    if (!key) {
        return;
    }

    var url = new URL(window.location.href);
    var params = new window.URLSearchParams(window.location.search);
    if (value === undefined || value === null) {
        params.delete(key);
    } else {
        params.set(key, value);
    }

    url.search = params;
    url = url.toString();
    window.history.replaceState({url: url}, null, url);
}

How can I pass a reference to a function, with parameters?

The following is equivalent to your second code block:

var f = function () {
        //Some logic here...
    };

var fr = f;

fr(pars);

If you want to actually pass a reference to a function to some other function, you can do something like this:

function fiz(x, y, z) {
    return x + y + z;
}

// elsewhere...

function foo(fn, p, q, r) {
    return function () {
        return fn(p, q, r);
    }
}

// finally...

f = foo(fiz, 1, 2, 3);
f(); // returns 6

You're almost certainly better off using a framework for this sort of thing, though.
