For many numbers it will not overflow.

If it will overflow - for one of those unlucky initial seeds, the overflown number will very likely converge toward 1 without another overflow.

Still this poses interesting question, is there some overflow-cyclic seed number?

Any simple final converging series starts with power of two value (obvious enough?).

2^64 will overflow to zero, which is undefined infinite loop according to algorithm (ends only with 1), but the most optimal solution in answer will finish due to shr rax producing ZF=1.

Can we produce 2^64? If the starting number is 0x5555555555555555, it's odd number, next number is then 3n+1, which is 0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF + 1 = 0. Theoretically in undefined state of algorithm, but the optimized answer of johnfound will recover by exiting on ZF=1. The cmp rax,1 of Peter Cordes will end in infinite loop (QED variant 1, "cheapo" through undefined 0 number).

How about some more complex number, which will create cycle without 0? Frankly, I'm not sure, my Math theory is too hazy to get any serious idea, how to deal with it in serious way. But intuitively I would say the series will converge to 1 for every number : 0 < number, as the 3n+1 formula will slowly turn every non-2 prime factor of original number (or intermediate) into some power of 2, sooner or later. So we don't need to worry about infinite loop for original series, only overflow can hamper us.

So I just put few numbers into sheet and took a look on 8 bit truncated numbers.

There are three values overflowing to 0: 227, 170 and 85 (85 going directly to 0, other two progressing toward 85).

But there's no value creating cyclic overflow seed.

Funnily enough I did a check, which is the first number to suffer from 8 bit truncation, and already 27 is affected! It does reach value 9232 in proper non-truncated series (first truncated value is 322 in 12th step), and the maximum value reached for any of the 2-255 input numbers in non-truncated way is 13120 (for the 255 itself), maximum number of steps to converge to 1 is about 128 (+-2, not sure if "1" is to count, etc...).

Interestingly enough (for me) the number 9232 is maximum for many other source numbers, what's so special about it? :-O 9232 = 0x2410 ... hmmm.. no idea.

Unfortunately I can't get any deep grasp of this series, why does it converge and what are the implications of truncating them to k bits, but with cmp number,1 terminating condition it's certainly possible to put the algorithm into infinite loop with particular input value ending as 0 after truncation.

But the value 27 overflowing for 8 bit case is sort of alerting, this looks like if you count the number of steps to reach value 1, you will get wrong result for majority of numbers from the total k-bit set of integers. For the 8 bit integers the 146 numbers out of 256 have affected series by truncation (some of them may still hit the correct number of steps by accident maybe, I'm too lazy to check).

If you are using curl versions curl-7.19.7-46.el6.x86_64 or older. Please provide an option as -k1 (small K1).

After two dozens of comments to understand the situation, it was found that the libhdf5.so.7 was actually a symlink (with several levels of indirection) to a file that was not shared between the queued processes and the interactive processes. This means even though the symlink itself lies on a shared filesystem, the contents of the file do not and as a result the process was seeing different versions of the library.

For future reference: other than checking LD_LIBRARY_PATH, it's always a good idea to check a library with nm -D to see if the symbols actually exist. In this case it was found that they do exist in interactive mode but not when run in the queue. A quick md5sum revealed that the files were actually different.

I actually had a very simple fix to this. All i did was edit the git config file differently after cloning the repository. The remote origin url is what you need to edit in your default config file. It should look like seen below

after hardware check on the server and it was found out that memory had gone bad, replaced the memory and the server is now fully accessible.

I have have multiple @interfaces in the .h file and hadn't yet included the all of the corresponding @implementation directives. Make sure that they are all balanced out.

I encountered the same problem, even though I did not make any dynamic memory allocation in my program, but I was accessing a vector's index without allocating memory for it. So, if the same case, better allocate some memory using resize() and then access vector elements.

I had the exact same error, and like you, installing zlib1g-dev did not fix it. Installing lib32z1-dev got me past it. I have a 64 bit system and it seems like it wanted the 32 bit library.

It is Debian convention to separate shared libraries into their runtime components (libmagic1: /usr/lib/libmagic.so.1 ? libmagic.so.1.0.0) and their development components (libmagic-dev: /usr/lib/libmagic.so ? …).

Because the library's soname is libmagic.so.1, that's the string that gets embedded into the executable so that's the file that is loaded when the executable is run.

However, because the library is specified as -lmagic to the linker, it looks for libmagic.so, which is why it is needed for development.

In short, you should apt-get install libmagic-dev. This will not only give you libmagic.so but also other files necessary for compiling like /usr/include/magic.h.

A good rule of thumb is "open DLLs, closed EXEs", that is:

• EXE targets the OS, by specifying x86 or x64.
• DLLs are left open (i.e., AnyCPU) so they can be instantiated within a 32-bit or a 64-bit process.

When you build an EXE as AnyCPU, all you're doing is deferring the decision on what process bitness to use to the OS, which will JIT the EXE to its liking. That is, an x64 OS will create a 64-bit process, an x86 OS will create an 32-bit process.

Building DLLs as AnyCPU makes them compatible to either process.

• AnyCPU – loads as x64 or x86 assembly, depending on the invoking process
• x86 – loads as x86 assembly; will not load from an x64 process

Named exports - for example export function func() {} is a named export with the name of func. Named modules can be imported using import { exportName } from 'module';. Firstly, you should use randrange(0,1000) or randint(0,999), not randint(0,1000). The upper limit of randint is inclusive.

For efficiently, randint is simply a wrapper of randrange which calls random, so you should just use random. Also, use xrange as the argument to sample, not range.

You could use

Your code is being interpreted as many parameters being passed to Write-Host. Wrapping it up inside parentheses will concatenate the values and then pass the resulting value as a single parameter.

The best way to put is that hg forget is identical to hg remove except that it leaves the files behind in your working copy. The files are left behind as untracked files and can now optionally be ignored with a pattern in .hgignore.

In other words, I cannot tell if you used hg forget or hg remove when I pull from you. A file that you ran hg forget on will be deleted when I update to that changeset — just as if you had used hg remove instead.

I am not for throwing Exceptions in the constructor since I am considering this as non-clean. There are several reasons for my opinion.

1. As Richard mentioned you cannot initialize an instance in an easy manner. Especially in tests it is really annoying to build a test-wide object only by surrounding it in a try-catch during initialization.

2. Constructors should be logic-free. There is no reason at all to encapsulate logic in a constructor, since you are always aiming for the Separation of Concerns and Single Responsibility Principle. Since the concern of the constructor is to "construct an object" it should not encapsulate any exception handling if following this approach.

3. It smells like bad design. Imho if I am forced to do exception handling in the constructor I am at first asking myself if I have any design frauds in my class. It is necessary sometimes, but then I outsource this to a builder or factory to keep the constructor as simple as possible.

So if it is necessary to do some exception handling in the constructor, why would you not outsource this logic to a Builder of Factory? It might be a few more lines of code but gives you the freedom to implement a far more robust and well suited exception handling since you can outsource the logic for the exception handling even more and are not sticked to the constructor, which will encapsulate too much logic. And the client does not need to know anything about your constructing logic if you delegate the exception handling properly.

I not expert in MySQL but you probably should look on triggers e.g. BEFORE INSERT. In the trigger you can run select query on your original table and if it found something just update the row 'logins' instead of inserting new values. But all this depends on version of MySQL you running.

As others mentioned before, the reason for any tool to exist is how efficiently it can work. As HLLs can accomplish the same jobs as many lines of asm code I guess it's natural for assembly to be superseded by other languages. And for the close-to-hardware fiddling - there's inline assembly in C and other variants as per language. Dr. Paul Carter in says in the PC Assembly Language

"...a better understanding of how computers really work at a lower level than in programming languages like Pascal. By gaining a deeper understanding of how computers work, the reader can often be much more productive developing software in higher level languages such as C and C++. Learning to program in assembly language is an excellent way to achieve this goal."

TL;DR version:

You must use expand=True if your strings have a non-uniform number of splits and you want None to replace the missing values.

Notice how, in either case, the .tolist() method is not necessary. Neither is zip().

In detail:

Andy Hayden's solution is most excellent in demonstrating the power of the str.extract() method.

But for a simple split over a known separator (like, splitting by dashes, or splitting by whitespace), the .str.split() method is enough¹. It operates on a column (Series) of strings, and returns a column (Series) of lists:

Well, we need to take a closer look at the .str attribute of a column.

It's a magical object that is used to collect methods that treat each element in a column as a string, and then apply the respective method in each element as efficient as possible:

If the user supplies invalid data, it should definitely be a 400 Bad Request (The request contains bad syntax or cannot be fulfilled.)

I know I'm a little late to the party, but I just found this awesome tool called pg_sample:

pg_sample - extract a small, sample dataset from a larger PostgreSQL database while maintaining referential integrity.

I tried this with a 350M rows database and it was really fast, don't know about the randomness.

Using IReadOnlyCollection<T> or IReadOnlyList<T> in the method signature instead of IEnumerable<T>, has the advantage of making explicit that you might need to check the count before iterating, or to iterate multiple times for some other reason.

However they have a huge downside that will cause problems if you try to refactor your code to use interfaces, for instance to make it more testable and friendly to dynamic proxying. The key point is that IList<T> does not inherit from IReadOnlyList<T>, and similarly for other collections and their respective read-only interfaces. (In short, this is because .NET 4.5 wanted to keep ABI compatibility with earlier versions. But they didn't even take the opportunity to change that in .NET core.)

This means that if you get an IList<T> from some part of the program and want to pass it to another part that expects an IReadOnlyList<T>, you can't! You can however pass an IList<T> as an IEnumerable<T>.

In the end, IEnumerable<T> is the only read-only interface supported by all .NET collections including all collection interfaces. Any other alternative will come back to bite you as you realize that you locked yourself out from some architecture choices. So I think it's the proper type to use in function signatures to express that you just want a read-only collection.

(Note that you can always write a IReadOnlyList<T> ToReadOnly<T>(this IList<T> list) extension method that simple casts if the underlying type supports both interfaces, but you have to add it manually everywhere when refactoring, where as IEnumerable<T> is always compatible.)

As always this is not an absolute, if you're writing database-heavy code where accidental multiple enumeration would be a disaster, you might prefer a different trade-off.

I am using XAMPP and came across the same error. I had done all those steps, added environmental variables path, copied the dll's every directory possible, to /php, /apache/bin, /system32, /syswow64, etc.. but still got this error.

Then after checking the apache error log, I noticed the issue with using brackets in path.

PHP: syntax error, unexpected '(' in C:\Program Files (other)\xampp\php\php.ini on line 707 0 server certificate does NOT include an ID which matches the server name

If you have installed the server in "Program Files (x86)" directory, the same error might occur due to the non-escaped brackets.

To fix this, open php.ini file and locate the line containing "include_path" and enclose the path with double quotes to fix this error.

In my case this works perfectly. This will show dot in place of the actual text (not star(*) though).

Some background: I went looking for exactly this question because I had to do something to retrieve content, but all I had available was an old version of python with inadequate SSL support. If you're on an older MacBook, you know what I'm talking about. In any case, curl runs fine from a shell (I suspect it has modern SSL support linked in) so sometimes you want to do this without using requests or urllib2.

You can use the subprocess module to execute curl and get at the retrieved content:

To my knowledge, there is sadly no CSS filter to colorise an element (perhaps with the use of some SVG filter magic, but I'm somewhat unfamiliar with that) and even if that wasn't the case, filters are basically only supported by webkit browsers.

With that said, you could still work around this and use a canvas to modify your image. Basically, you can draw an image element onto a canvas and then loop through the pixels, modifying the respective RGBA values to the colour you want.

However, canvases do come with some restrictions. Most importantly, you have to make sure that the image src comes from the same domain as the page. Otherwise the browser won't allow you to read or modify the pixel data of the canvas.

Theoretically, yes. Practice, not. Most kernels (incl. linux) doesn't allow you a second bind() to an already allocated port. It weren't a really big patch to make this allowed.

Conceptionally, we should differentiate between socket and port. Sockets are bidirectional communication endpoints, i.e. "things" where we can send and receive bytes. It is a conceptional thing, there is no such field in a packet header named "socket".

Port is an identifier which is capable to identify a socket. In case of the TCP, a port is a 16 bit integer, but there are other protocols as well (for example, on unix sockets, a "port" is essentially a string).

The main problem is the following: if an incoming packet arrives, the kernel can identify its socket by its destination port number. It is a most common way, but it is not the only possibility:

• Sockets can be identified by the destination IP of the incoming packets. This is the case, for example, if we have a server using two IPs simultanously. Then we can run, for example, different webservers on the same ports, but on the different IPs.
• Sockets can be identified by their source port and ip as well. This is the case in many load balancing configurations.

Because you are working on an application server, it will be able to do that.

In my somewhat checkered experience, applying -O3 to an entire program almost always makes it slower (relative to -O2), because it turns on aggressive loop unrolling and inlining that make the program no longer fit in the instruction cache. There's no pretty way. You might be able to use a proxy with the handler having the target methods and delegating everything else to them. Of course you'll have to use a factory because there'll be no constructor.

While the answer given by Paul H shows the essential part, it is not a complete example. On the other hand the matplotlib example seems rather complicated and does not show how to use days.

You can do direct SQL to have a single query for both tables. I'll provide a sanitized query example to hopefully keep people from putting variables directly into the string itself (SQL injection danger), even though this example didn't specify the need for it:

You can also put raw SQL fragments into ActiveRecord relational queries: http://guides.rubyonrails.org/active_record_querying.html and in associations, scopes, etc. You could probably construct the same SQL with ActiveRecord relational queries and can do cool things with ARel as Ernie mentions in http://erniemiller.org/2010/03/28/advanced-activerecord-3-queries-with-arel/. And, of course there are other ORMs, gems, etc.

If this is going to be used a lot and adding indices won't cause other performance/resource issues, consider adding an index in the DB for payment_details.created_at and for payment_errors.created_at.

If lots of records and not all records need to show up at once, consider using pagination:

If you need to paginate, consider creating a view in the DB first called payment_records which combines the payment_details and payment_errors tables, then have a model for the view (which will be read-only). Some DBs support materialized views, which might be a good idea for performance.

Also consider hardware or VM specs on Rails server and DB server, config, disk space, network speed/latency/etc., proximity, etc. And consider putting DB on different server/VM than the Rails app if you haven't, etc.

As @Stan says in the comment, the code I am giving is not summing up lines. mLine is replaced every pass. That's why I wrote //process line. I assume the file contains some sort of data (i.e a contact list) and each line should be processed separately.

In case you simply want to load the file without any kind of processing you will have to sum up mLine at each pass using StringBuilder() and appending each pass.

I personally wanted to test the difference between Quick sort and merge sort myself and saw the running times for a sample of 1,000,000 elements.

Quick sort was able to do it in 156 milliseconds whereas Merge sort did the same in 247 milliseconds

The Quick sort data, however, was random and quick sort performs well if the data is random where as its not the case with merge sort i.e. merge sort performs the same, irrespective of whether data is sorted or not. But merge sort requires one full extra space and quick sort does not as its an in-place sort

Logger configs are a waste of time. Why have them if it means learning a new syntax, especially one that fails silently? Don't get me wrong, I love good logging. I love logger inheritance and adding formatters to handlers to loggers. But why do it in a config file?

Do you want to make changes to logging code without recompiling? Why? If you put your logging code in a separate class, file, whatever, what difference will it make?

Do you want to distribute a configurable log with your product to clients? Doesn't this just give too much information anyway?

The most frustrating thing about it is that popular utilities written in a popular language tend to write good APIs in the format that language specifies. Write a Java logging utility and I know you've generated the javadocs, which I know how to navigate. Write a domain specific language for your logger config and what do we have? Maybe there's documentation, but where the heck is it? You decide on a way to organize it, and I'm just not interested in following your line of thought.

Get started quickly

You simply type vim into the terminal to open it and start a new file.

You can pass a filename as an option and it will open that file, e.g. vim main.c. You can open multiple files by passing multiple file arguments.

Vim has different modes, unlike most editors you have probably used. You begin in NORMAL mode, which is where you will spend most of your time once you become familiar with vim.

To return to NORMAL mode after changing to a different mode, press Esc. It's a good idea to map your Caps Lock key to Esc, as it's closer and nobody really uses the Caps Lock key.

The first mode to try is INSERT mode, which is entered with a for append after cursor, or i for insert before cursor.

To enter VISUAL mode, where you can select text, use v. There are many other variants of this mode, which you will discover as you learn more about vim.

To save your file, ensure you're in NORMAL mode and then enter the command :w. When you press :, you will see your command appear in the bottom status bar. To save and exit, use :x. To quit without saving, use :q. If you had made a change you wanted to discard, use :q!.

Configure vim to your liking

You can edit your ~/.vimrc file to configure vim to your liking. It's best to look at a few first (here's mine) and then decide which options suits your style.

This is how mine looks:

To get the file explorer on the left, use NERDTree. For the status bar, use vim-airline. Finally, the color scheme is solarized.

You can use man vim for some help inside the terminal. Alternatively, run vimtutor which is a good hands-on starting point.

SELECT (sub)queries return result sets. So you need to use IN, not = in your WHERE clause.

Additionally, as shown in this answer you cannot modify the same table from a subquery within the same query. However, you can either SELECT then DELETE in separate queries, or nest another subquery and alias the inner subquery result (looks rather hacky, though):

There are some C++ sites which show up in a Google search, but some at least have a dubious reputation, judging from comments seen elsewhere on SO.

Autocomplete off is not supported by modern browsers. The easiest way to solve autocomplete I found was a little track with HTML and JS. The first thing to do is change the type of the input in HTML from 'password' to 'text'.

You can get access to the options array of a selected object by going document.getElementById("cars").options where 'cars' is the select object.

There is a few benefits of using modules. Any method declared as static in Java belongs to the class itself . Again static method of a particular class can be accessed only by referring to the class like Class_name.method_name();

So a class need not to be instantiated before accessing a static method.

So the main() method is declared as static so that it can be accessed without creating an object of that class.

Since we save the program with the name of the class where the main method is present( or from where the program should begin its execution, applicable for classes without a main() method()(Advanced Level)). So by the above mentioned way:

Class_name.method_name();

the main method can be accessed.

In brief when the program is compiled it searches for the main() method having String arguments like: main(String args[]) in the class mentioned(i.e. by the name of the program), and since at the the beginning it has no scope to instantiate that class, so the main() method is declared as static.

While updating SDK tools, a dilog box presented with Constraint layout version that is going to get installed. Note that and update your dependency based on that. In my case it was installing beta3.

I needed to export log in one line for a specific branch.

So I probably came out with a simpler solution.
When doing git log --pretty=oneline --graph we can see that all commit not done in the current branch are lines starting with |

So a simple grep -v do the job:

You probably want to remove merge commit too.

In my case, I could not get the answer by @Sampson to work for me, at best I got a single column centered on the page. In the process however, I learned how the float actually works and created this solution. At it's core the fix is very simple but hard to find as evident by this thread which has had more than 146k views at the time of this post without mention.

All that is needed is to total the amount of screen space width that the desired layout will occupy then make the parent the same width and apply margin:auto. That's it!

The elements in the layout will dictate the width and height of the "outer" div. Take each "myFloat" or element's width or height + its borders + its margins and its paddings and add them all together. Then add the other elements together in the same fashion. This is not a compiler error: the error is coming from the linker. After compilation, the linker will merge the object files resulting from the compilation of each of your translation units (.cpp files).

The linker finds out that you have the same symbol defined multiple times in different translation units, and complains about it (it is a violation of the One Definition Rule).

The reason is most certainly that main.cpp includes client.cpp, and both these files are individually processed by the compiler to produce two separate object files. Therefore, all the symbols defined in the client.cpp translation unit will be defined also in the main.cpp translation unit. This is one of the reasons why you do not usually #include .cpp files.

Put the definition of your class in a separate client.hpp file which does not contain also the definitions of the member functions of that class; then, let client.cpp and main.cpp include that file (I mean #include). Finally, leave in client.cpp the definitions of your class's member functions.

ELF format is generally the default output of compiling. if you use GNU tool chains, you can translate it to binary format by using objcopy, such as:

  arm-elf-objcopy -O binary [elf-input-file] [binary-output-file]

or using fromELF utility(built in most IDEs such as ADS though):

 fromelf -bin -o [binary-output-file] [elf-input-file]

The plus operator converts operands to int first and then does the addition. So the result is the int. You need to cast it back to short explicitly because conversions from a "longer" type to "shorter" type a made explicit, so that you don't loose data accidentally with an implicit cast.

As to why int16 is cast to int, the answer is, because this is what is defined in C# spec. And C# is this way is because it was designed to closely match to the way how CLR works, and CLR has only 32/64 bit arithmetic and not 16 bit. Other languages on top of CLR may choose to expose this differently.

It depends on the protocol you're using. If you're using SVN + SSH, the SVN client can't save your password because it never touches it - the SSH client prompts you for it directly. In this case, you can use an SSH key and ssh-agent to avoid the constant prompts. If you're using the svnserve protocol or HTTP(S), then the SSH client is handling your password and can save it.

My preference is to encode all non-alphaumeric characters as HTML numeric character entities. Since almost, if not all attacks require non-alphuneric characters (like <, ", etc) this should eliminate a large chunk of dangerous output.

Format is &#N;, where N is the numeric value of the character (you can just cast the character to an int and concatenate with a string to get a decimal value). For example:

The latest version from Red Gate is 6.1. However the 5.1 version cannot automatically update to version 6 because there were changes to the Terms of Service, so instead you are redirected to the site to download the 6.1 version. After you manually update to 6.1 you will no longer experience any problems.

It’s a holdover from the Netscape days:

Missing digits are treated as 0[...]. An incorrect digit is simply interpreted as 0. For example the values #F0F0F0, F0F0F0, F0F0F, #FxFxFx and FxFxFx are all the same.

It is from the blog post A little rant about Microsoft Internet Explorer's color parsing which covers it in great detail, including varying lengths of color values, etc.

If we apply the rules in turn from the blog post, we get the following:

1. Replace all nonvalid hexadecimal characters with 0’s:

   chucknorris becomes c00c0000000
   

2. Pad out to the next total number of characters divisible by 3 (11 ? 12):

   c00c 0000 0000
   

3. Split into three equal groups, with each component representing the corresponding colour component of an RGB colour:

   RGB (c00c, 0000, 0000)
   

4. Truncate each of the arguments from the right down to two characters.

Which, finally, gives the following result:

RGB (c0, 00, 00) = #C00000 or RGB(192, 0, 0)

This also answers the other part of the question: Why does bgcolor="chucknorr" produce a yellow colour? Well, if we apply the rules, the string is:

c00c00000 => c00 c00 000 => c0 c0 00 [RGB(192, 192, 0)]

Which gives a light yellow gold colour. As the string starts off as 9 characters, we keep the second ‘C’ this time around, hence it ends up in the final colour value.

I originally encountered this when someone pointed out that you could do color="crap" and, well, it comes out brown.

Objective-C is not Java. In Objective-C exceptions are what they are called. Exceptions! Don’t use them for error handling. It’s not their proposal. Just check the length of the string before using characterAtIndex and everything is fine....

<- does assignment in the current environment.

When you're inside a function R creates a new environment for you. By default it includes everything from the environment in which it was created so you can use those variables as well but anything new you create will not get written to the global environment.

In most cases <<- will assign to variables already in the global environment or create a variable in the global environment even if you're inside a function. However, it isn't quite as straightforward as that. What it does is checks the parent environment for a variable with the name of interest. If it doesn't find it in your parent environment it goes to the parent of the parent environment (at the time the function was created) and looks there. It continues upward to the global environment and if it isn't found in the global environment it will assign the variable in the global environment.

This might illustrate what is going on.

The first time we print bar we haven't called foo yet so it should still be global - this makes sense. The second time we print it's inside of foo before calling baz so the value "in foo" makes sense. The following is where we see what <<- is actually doing. The next value printed is "in baz - before <<-" even though the print statement comes after the <<-. This is because <<- doesn't look in the current environment (unless you're in the global environment in which case <<- acts like <-). So inside of baz the value of bar stays as "in baz - before <<-". Once we call baz the copy of bar inside of foo gets changed to "in baz" but as we can see the global bar is unchanged. This is because the copy of bar that is defined inside of foo is in the parent environment when we created baz so this is the first copy of bar that <<- sees and thus the copy it assigns to. So <<- isn't just directly assigning to the global environment.

<<- is tricky and I wouldn't recommend using it if you can avoid it. If you really want to assign to the global environment you can use the assign function and tell it explicitly that you want to assign globally.

Now I change the <<- to an assign statement and we can see what effect that has:

So both times we print bar inside of foo the value is "in foo" even after calling baz. This is because assign never even considered the copy of bar inside of foo because we told it exactly where to look. However, this time the value of bar in the global environment was changed because we explicitly assigned there.

Now you also asked about creating local variables and you can do that fairly easily as well without creating a function... We just need to use the local function.

The following statement causes a user's password to expire:

ALTER USER user PASSWORD EXPIRE;

If you cause a database user's password to expire with PASSWORD EXPIRE, then the user (or the DBA) must change the password before attempting to log in to the database following the expiration. Tools such as SQL*Plus allow the user to change the password on the first attempted login following the expiration.

ALTER USER scott IDENTIFIED BY password;

Will set/reset the users password.
