How to use System.Net.HttpClient to post a complex type?

This is the code I wound up with, based upon the other answers here. This is for an HttpPost that receives and responds with complex types:

Task<HttpResponseMessage> response = httpClient.PostAsJsonAsync(
                       strMyHttpPostURL,
                       new MyComplexObject { Param1 = param1, Param2 = param2}).ContinueWith((postTask) => postTask.Result.EnsureSuccessStatusCode());
                    //debug:
                    //String s = response.Result.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result;
                    MyOtherComplexType moct = (MyOtherComplexType)JsonConvert.DeserializeObject(response.Result.Content.ReadAsStringAsync().Result, typeof(MyOtherComplexType));

Is there a SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE equivalent in SQL Server Management Studio?

In SSMS, "Query" menu item... "Results to"... "Results to File"

Shortcut = CTRL+shift+F

You can set it globally too

"Tools"... "Options"... "Query Results"... "SQL Server".. "Default destination" drop down

Edit: after comment

In SSMS, "Query" menu item... "SQLCMD" mode

This allows you to run "command line" like actions.

Ok the latest answer to this, as of now don't use Python 3.8, use only 3.7 or less , because of most of the libraries fail to install with the above error

Maintain the aspect ratio of a div with CSS

I guess just using rem or em should solve the problem of fixed ratio but wont be hard bound to the screen as vw or vh or as painfull to use with flexbox as % is. Well, none of the answers worked properly for me, and in my case this attended me:

<div class="container">
   <div>
   </div>
</div>
.container {
   height: 100vh;
   width: 100vw;
}
.container div {
   height: 4em;
   width: 3em;
}

Or using rem. But anyway, any of them should make it.
rem uses the default font-size value as em use the closest font-size.

Remove Last Comma from a string

The greatly upvoted answer removes not only the final comma, but also any spaces that follow. But removing those following spaces was not what was part of the original problem. So:

let str = 'abc,def,ghi, ';
let str2 = str.replace(/,(?=\s*$)/, '');
alert("'" + str2 + "'");
'abc,def,ghi '

How to round the minute of a datetime object

The shortest way I know

min = tm.minute // 10 * 10

Output first 100 characters in a string

[start:stop:step]

So If you want to take only 100 first character, use your_string[0:100] or your_string[:100] If you want to take only the character at even position, use your_string[::2] The "default values" for start is 0, for stop - len of string, and for step - 1. So when you don't provide one of its and put ':', it'll use it default value.

How to access component methods from “outside” in ReactJS?

React provides an interface for what you are trying to do via the ref attribute. Assign a component a ref, and its current attribute will be your custom component:

class Parent extends React.Class {
    constructor(props) {
        this._child = React.createRef();
    }

    componentDidMount() {
        console.log(this._child.current.someMethod()); // Prints 'bar'
    }

    render() {
        return (
            <div>
                <Child ref={this._child} />
            </div>
        );
    }
}

Note: This will only work if the child component is declared as a class, as per documentation found here: https://facebook.github.io/react/docs/refs-and-the-dom.html#adding-a-ref-to-a-class-component

Update 2019-04-01: Changed example to use a class and createRef per latest React docs.

Update 2016-09-19: Changed example to use ref callback per guidance from the ref String attribute docs.

How to get all table names from a database?

Why should text files end with a newline?

There's also a practical programming issue with files lacking newlines at the end: The read Bash built-in (I don't know about other read implementations) doesn't work as expected:

printf $'foo\nbar' | while read line
do
    echo $line
done

This prints only foo! The reason is that when read encounters the last line, it writes the contents to $line but returns exit code 1 because it reached EOF. This breaks the while loop, so we never reach the echo $line part. If you want to handle this situation, you have to do the following:

while read line || [ -n "${line-}" ]
do
    echo $line
done < <(printf $'foo\nbar')

That is, do the echo if the read failed because of a non-empty line at end of file. Naturally, in this case there will be one extra newline in the output which was not in the input.

Iterating Through a Dictionary in Swift

Here is an alternative for that experiment (Swift 3.0). This tells you exactly which kind of number was the largest.

let interestingNumbers = [
"Prime": [2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13],
"Fibonacci": [1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8],
"Square": [1, 4, 9, 16, 25],
]

var largest = 0
var whichKind: String? = nil

for (kind, numbers) in interestingNumbers {
    for number in numbers {
    if number > largest {
        whichKind = kind
        largest = number
    }
  }
}

print(whichKind)
print(largest)

OUTPUT:
Optional("Square")

How can I set a website image that will show as preview on Facebook?

1. Include the Open Graph XML namespace extension to your HTML declaration

<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"
      xmlns:fb="http://ogp.me/ns/fb#">

2. Inside your <head></head> use the following meta tag to define the image you want to use

<meta property="og:image" content="fully_qualified_image_url_here" />

Read more about open graph protocol here.

After doing the above, use the Facebook "Object Debugger" if the image does not show up correctly. Also note the first time shared it still won't show up unless height and width are also specified, see Share on Facebook - Thumbnail not showing for the first time

SQL join format - nested inner joins

For readability, I restructured the query... starting with the apparent top-most level being Table1, which then ties to Table3, and then table3 ties to table2. Much easier to follow if you follow the chain of relationships.

Now, to answer your question. You are getting a large count as the result of a Cartesian product. For each record in Table1 that matches in Table3 you will have X * Y. Then, for each match between table3 and Table2 will have the same impact... Y * Z... So your result for just one possible ID in table 1 can have X * Y * Z records.

This is based on not knowing how the normalization or content is for your tables... if the key is a PRIMARY key or not..

Ex:
Table 1
DiffKey    Other Val
1          X
1          Y
1          Z

Table 3
DiffKey   Key    Key2  Tbl3 Other
1         2      6     V
1         2      6     X
1         2      6     Y
1         2      6     Z

Table 2
Key    Key2   Other Val
2      6      a
2      6      b
2      6      c
2      6      d
2      6      e

So, Table 1 joining to Table 3 will result (in this scenario) with 12 records (each in 1 joined with each in 3). Then, all that again times each matched record in table 2 (5 records)... total of 60 ( 3 tbl1 * 4 tbl3 * 5 tbl2 )count would be returned.

So, now, take that and expand based on your 1000's of records and you see how a messed-up structure could choke a cow (so-to-speak) and kill performance.

SELECT
      COUNT(*)
   FROM
      Table1
         INNER JOIN Table3
            ON Table1.DifferentKey = Table3.DifferentKey
            INNER JOIN Table2
               ON Table3.Key =Table2.Key
               AND Table3.Key2 = Table2.Key2

How to view log output using docker-compose run?

Update July 1st 2019

docker-compose logs <name-of-service>

From the documentation:

Usage: logs [options] [SERVICE...]

Options:

--no-color Produce monochrome output.

-f, --follow Follow log output.

-t, --timestamps Show timestamps.

--tail="all" Number of lines to show from the end of the logs for each container.

See docker logs

You can start Docker compose in detached mode and attach yourself to the logs of all container later. If you're done watching logs you can detach yourself from the logs output without shutting down your services.

  1. Use docker-compose up -d to start all services in detached mode (-d) (you won't see any logs in detached mode)
  2. Use docker-compose logs -f -t to attach yourself to the logs of all running services, whereas -f means you follow the log output and the -t option gives you timestamps (See Docker reference)
  3. Use Ctrl + z or Ctrl + c to detach yourself from the log output without shutting down your running containers

If you're interested in logs of a single container you can use the docker keyword instead:

  1. Use docker logs -t -f <name-of-service>

Save the output

To save the output to a file you add the following to your logs command:

  1. docker-compose logs -f -t >> myDockerCompose.log

Why does Eclipse Java Package Explorer show question mark on some classes?

With some version-control plug-ins, it means that the local file has not yet been shared with the version-control repository. (In my install, this includes plug-ins for CVS and git, but not Perforce.)

You can sometimes see a list of these decorations in the plug-in's preferences under Team/X/Label Decorations, where X describes the version-control system.

For example, for CVS, the list looks like this:

enter image description here

These adornments are added to the object icons provided by Eclipse. For example, here's a table of icons for the Java development environment.

Tuple unpacking in for loops

Short answer, unpacking tuples from a list in a for loop works. enumerate() creates a tuple using the current index and the entire current item, such as (0, ('bob', 3))

I created some test code to demonstrate this:

    list = [('bob', 3), ('alice', 0), ('john', 5), ('chris', 4), ('alex', 2)]

    print("Displaying Enumerated List")
    for name, num in enumerate(list):
        print("{0}: {1}".format(name, num))

    print("Display Normal Iteration though List")
    for name, num in list:
        print("{0}: {1}".format(name, num))

The simplicity of Tuple unpacking is probably one of my favourite things about Python :D

How to do a subquery in LINQ?

Here's a version of the SQL that returns the correct records:

select distinct u.*
from Users u, CompanyRolesToUsers c
where u.Id = c.UserId --join just specified here, perfectly fine
and u.firstname like '%amy%'
and c.CompanyRoleId in (2,3,4)

Also, note that (2,3,4) is a list selected from a checkbox list by the web app user, and I forgot to mention that I just hardcoded that for simplicity. Really it's an array of CompanyRoleId values, so it could be (1) or (2,5) or (1,2,3,4,6,7,99).

Also the other thing that I should specify more clearly, is that the PredicateExtensions are used to dynamically add predicate clauses to the Where for the query, depending on which form fields the web app user has filled in. So the tricky part for me is how to transform the working query into a LINQ Expression that I can attach to the dynamic list of expressions.

I'll give some of the sample LINQ queries a shot and see if I can integrate them with our code, and then get post my results. Thanks!

What does Maven do, in theory and in practice? When is it worth to use it?

What it does

Maven is a "build management tool", it is for defining how your .java files get compiled to .class, packaged into .jar (or .war or .ear) files, (pre/post)processed with tools, managing your CLASSPATH, and all others sorts of tasks that are required to build your project. It is similar to Apache Ant or Gradle or Makefiles in C/C++, but it attempts to be completely self-contained in it that you shouldn't need any additional tools or scripts by incorporating other common tasks like downloading & installing necessary libraries etc.

It is also designed around the "build portability" theme, so that you don't get issues as having the same code with the same buildscript working on one computer but not on another one (this is a known issue, we have VMs of Windows 98 machines since we couldn't get some of our Delphi applications compiling anywhere else). Because of this, it is also the best way to work on a project between people who use different IDEs since IDE-generated Ant scripts are hard to import into other IDEs, but all IDEs nowadays understand and support Maven (IntelliJ, Eclipse, and NetBeans). Even if you don't end up liking Maven, it ends up being the point of reference for all other modern builds tools.

Why you should use it

There are three things about Maven that are very nice.

  1. Maven will (after you declare which ones you are using) download all the libraries that you use and the libraries that they use for you automatically. This is very nice, and makes dealing with lots of libraries ridiculously easy. This lets you avoid "dependency hell". It is similar to Apache Ant's Ivy.

  2. It uses "Convention over Configuration" so that by default you don't need to define the tasks you want to do. You don't need to write a "compile", "test", "package", or "clean" step like you would have to do in Ant or a Makefile. Just put the files in the places in which Maven expects them and it should work off of the bat.

  3. Maven also has lots of nice plug-ins that you can install that will handle many routine tasks from generating Java classes from an XSD schema using JAXB to measuring test coverage with Cobertura. Just add them to your pom.xml and they will integrate with everything else you want to do.

The initial learning curve is steep, but (nearly) every professional Java developer uses Maven or wishes they did. You should use Maven on every project although don't be surprised if it takes you a while to get used to it and that sometimes you wish you could just do things manually, since learning something new sometimes hurts. However, once you truly get used to Maven you will find that build management takes almost no time at all.

How to Start

The best place to start is "Maven in 5 Minutes". It will get you start with a project ready for you to code in with all the necessary files and folders set-up (yes, I recommend using the quickstart archetype, at least at first).

After you get started you'll want a better understanding over how the tool is intended to be used. For that "Better Builds with Maven" is the most thorough place to understand the guts of how it works, however, "Maven: The Complete Reference" is more up-to-date. Read the first one for understanding, but then use the second one for reference.

How to convert an address into a Google Maps Link (NOT MAP)

On http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/short-urls-for-google-maps/6604/ they show a short URL that works pretty well

Google Maps URLs are pretty unwieldy especially when sending over an IM, tweet or email. MapOf.it provides you a quick way to link to Google Maps by simply specifying the address of the location as a search parameter.

I used it for a few applications I've designed and it worked like a charm.

Change line width of lines in matplotlib pyplot legend

@ImportanceOfBeingErnest 's answer is good if you only want to change the linewidth inside the legend box. But I think it is a bit more complex since you have to copy the handles before changing legend linewidth. Besides, it can not change the legend label fontsize. The following two methods can not only change the linewidth but also the legend label text font size in a more concise way.

Method 1

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

# make some data
x = np.linspace(0, 2*np.pi)

y1 = np.sin(x)
y2 = np.cos(x)

# plot sin(x) and cos(x)
fig = plt.figure()
ax  = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.plot(x, y1, c='b', label='y1')
ax.plot(x, y2, c='r', label='y2')

leg = plt.legend()
# get the individual lines inside legend and set line width
for line in leg.get_lines():
    line.set_linewidth(4)
# get label texts inside legend and set font size
for text in leg.get_texts():
    text.set_fontsize('x-large')

plt.savefig('leg_example')
plt.show()

Method 2

import numpy as np
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

# make some data
x = np.linspace(0, 2*np.pi)

y1 = np.sin(x)
y2 = np.cos(x)

# plot sin(x) and cos(x)
fig = plt.figure()
ax  = fig.add_subplot(111)
ax.plot(x, y1, c='b', label='y1')
ax.plot(x, y2, c='r', label='y2')

leg = plt.legend()
# get the lines and texts inside legend box
leg_lines = leg.get_lines()
leg_texts = leg.get_texts()
# bulk-set the properties of all lines and texts
plt.setp(leg_lines, linewidth=4)
plt.setp(leg_texts, fontsize='x-large')
plt.savefig('leg_example')
plt.show()

The above two methods produce the same output image:

Using OpenGl with C#?

OpenTK is an improvement over the Tao API, as it uses idiomatic C# style with overloading, strongly-typed enums, exceptions, and standard .NET types:

GL.Begin(BeginMode.Points);
GL.Color3(Color.Yellow);
GL.Vertex3(Vector3.Up);

as opposed to Tao which merely mirrors the C API:

Gl.glBegin(Gl.GL_POINTS);   // double "gl" prefix
Gl.glColor3ub(255, 255, 0); // have to pass RGB values as separate args
Gl.glVertex3f(0, 1, 0);     // explicit "f" qualifier

This makes for harder porting but is incredibly nice to use.

As a bonus it provides font rendering, texture loading, input handling, audio, math...

Update 18th January 2016: Today the OpenTK maintainer has stepped away from the project, leaving its future uncertain. The forums are filled with spam. The maintainer recommends moving to MonoGame or SDL2#.

Update 30th June 2020: OpenTK has had new maintainers for a while now and has an active discord community. So the previous recommendation of using another library isn't necessarily true.

How can I convert my Java program to an .exe file?

If you need to convert your entire application to native code, i.e. an EXE plus DLLs, there is ExcelsiorJET. I found it works well and provided an alternative to bundling a JRE.

EDIT: This was posted in 2010 - the product is no longer available.

How to remove list elements in a for loop in Python?

Iterate through a copy of the list:

>>> a = ["a", "b", "c", "d", "e"]
>>> for item in a[:]:
    print item
    if item == "b":
        a.remove(item)

a
b
c
d
e
>>> print a
['a', 'c', 'd', 'e']

Javascript Error Null is not an Object

Put the code so it executes after the elements are defined, either with a DOM ready callback or place the source under the elements in the HTML.

document.getElementById() returns null if the element couldn't be found. Property assignment can only occur on objects. null is not an object (contrary to what typeof says).

What is the easiest/best/most correct way to iterate through the characters of a string in Java?

I wouldn't use StringTokenizer as it is one of classes in the JDK that's legacy.

The javadoc says:

StringTokenizer is a legacy class that is retained for compatibility reasons although its use is discouraged in new code. It is recommended that anyone seeking this functionality use the split method of String or the java.util.regex package instead.

How to add a default "Select" option to this ASP.NET DropDownList control?

I have tried with following code. it's working for me fine

ManageOrder Order = new ManageOrder();
Organization.DataSource = Order.getAllOrganization(Session["userID"].ToString());
Organization.DataValueField = "OrganisationID";
Organization.DataTextField = "OrganisationName";
Organization.DataBind();
Organization.Items.Insert(0, new ListItem("Select Organisation", "0"));

RestSharp JSON Parameter Posting

You don't have to serialize the body yourself. Just do

request.RequestFormat = DataFormat.Json;
request.AddJsonBody(new { A = "foo", B = "bar" }); // Anonymous type object is converted to Json body

If you just want POST params instead (which would still map to your model and is a lot more efficient since there's no serialization to JSON) do this:

request.AddParameter("A", "foo");
request.AddParameter("B", "bar");

How to serve up a JSON response using Go?

You may use this package renderer, I have written to solve this kind of problem, it's a wrapper to serve JSON, JSONP, XML, HTML etc.

How do you split and unsplit a window/view in Eclipse IDE?

This is possible with the menu items Window>Editor>Toggle Split Editor.

Current shortcut for splitting is:

Azerty keyboard:

  • Ctrl + _ for split horizontally, and
  • Ctrl + { for split vertically.

Qwerty US keyboard:

  • Ctrl + Shift + - (accessing _) for split horizontally, and
  • Ctrl + Shift + [ (accessing {) for split vertically.

MacOS - Qwerty US keyboard:

  • + Shift + - (accessing _) for split horizontally, and
  • + Shift + [ (accessing {) for split vertically.

On any other keyboard if a required key is unavailable (like { on a german Qwertz keyboard), the following generic approach may work:

  • Alt + ASCII code + Ctrl then release Alt

Example: ASCII for '{' = 123, so press 'Alt', '1', '2', '3', 'Ctrl' and release 'Alt', effectively typing '{' while 'Ctrl' is pressed, to split vertically.

Example of vertical split:

https://bugs.eclipse.org/bugs/attachment.cgi?id=238285

PS:

  • The menu items Window>Editor>Toggle Split Editor were added with Eclipse Luna 4.4 M4, as mentioned by Lars Vogel in "Split editor implemented in Eclipse M4 Luna"
  • The split editor is one of the oldest and most upvoted Eclipse bug! Bug 8009
  • The split editor functionality has been developed in Bug 378298, and will be available as of Eclipse Luna M4. The Note & Newsworthy of Eclipse Luna M4 will contain the announcement.

ASP.NET Button to redirect to another page

<button type ="button" onclick="location.href='@Url.Action("viewname","Controllername")'"> Button name</button>

for e.g ,

<button type="button" onclick="location.href='@Url.Action("register","Home")'">Register</button>

Checking the form field values before submitting that page

Don't know for sure, but it sounds like it is still submitting. I quick solution would be to change your (guessing at your code here):

<input type="submit" value="Submit" onclick="checkform()">

to a button:

<input type="button" value="Submit" onclick="checkform()">

That way your form still gets submitted (from the else part of your checkform()) and it shouldn't be reloading the page.

There are other, perhaps better, ways of handling it but this works in the mean time.

When use getOne and findOne methods Spring Data JPA

The getOne methods returns only the reference from DB (lazy loading). So basically you are outside the transaction (the Transactional you have been declare in service class is not considered), and the error occur.

Function pointer as a member of a C struct

My guess is that part of your problem is the parameter lists not matching.

int (* length)();

and

int length(PString * self)

are not the same. It should be int (* length)(PString *);.

...woah, it's Jon!

Edit: and, as mentioned below, your struct pointer is never set to point to anything. The way you're doing it would only work if you were declaring a plain struct, not a pointer.

str = (PString *)malloc(sizeof(PString));

No generated R.java file in my project

This could also be the problem of an incorrect xml layout file for example. If your xml files are not valid (containing errors) the R file will not re-generate after a clean-up. If you fix this, the R file will be generated automatically again.

Byte Array and Int conversion in Java

/*sorry this is the correct */

     public byte[] IntArrayToByteArray(int[] iarray , int sizeofintarray)
     {
       final ByteBuffer bb ;
       bb = ByteBuffer.allocate( sizeofintarray * 4);
       for(int k = 0; k < sizeofintarray ; k++)
       bb.putInt(k * 4, iar[k]);
       return bb.array();
     }

Convert digits into words with JavaScript

I've just written paisa.js to do this, and it handles lakhs and crores correctly as well, can check it out. The core looks a bit like this:

const regulars = [
  {
    1: 'one', 2: 'two', 3: 'three', 4: 'four', 5: 'five', 6: 'six', 7: 'seven', 8: 'eight', 9: 'nine'
  },
  {
    2: 'twenty', 3: 'thirty', 4: 'forty', 5: 'fifty', 6: 'sixty', 7: 'seventy', 8: 'eighty', 9: 'ninety'
  }
]

const exceptions = {
  10: 'ten',
  11: 'eleven',
  12: 'twelve',
  13: 'thirteen',
  14: 'fourteen',
  15: 'fifteen',
  16: 'sixteen',
  17: 'seventeen',
  18: 'eighteen',
  19: 'nineteen'
}

const partInWords = (part) => {
  if (parseInt(part) === 0) return
  const digits = part.split('')
  const words = []
  if (digits.length === 3) {
    words.push([regulars[0][digits.shift()], 'hundred'].join(' '))
  }
  if (exceptions[digits.join('')]) {
    words.push(exceptions[digits.join('')])
  } else {
    words.push(digits.reverse().reduce((memo, el, i) => {
      memo.unshift(regulars[i][el])
      return memo
    }, []).filter(w => w).join(' '))
  }
  return words.filter(w => w.trim().length).join(' and ')
}

Flask Python Buttons

I think this solution is good:

@app.route('/contact', methods=['GET', 'POST'])
def contact():
    form = ContactForm()
    if form.validate_on_submit():
        if form.submit.data:
            pass
        elif form.submit2.data:
            pass
    return render_template('contact.html', form=form)

Form:

class ContactForm(FlaskForm):

    submit = SubmitField('Do this')
    submit2 = SubmitField('Do that')

HashMap get/put complexity

It has already been mentioned that hashmaps are O(n/m) in average, if n is the number of items and m is the size. It has also been mentioned that in principle the whole thing could collapse into a singly linked list with O(n) query time. (This all assumes that calculating the hash is constant time).

However what isn't often mentioned is, that with probability at least 1-1/n (so for 1000 items that's a 99.9% chance) the largest bucket won't be filled more than O(logn)! Hence matching the average complexity of binary search trees. (And the constant is good, a tighter bound is (log n)*(m/n) + O(1)).

All that's required for this theoretical bound is that you use a reasonably good hash function (see Wikipedia: Universal Hashing. It can be as simple as a*x>>m). And of course that the person giving you the values to hash doesn't know how you have chosen your random constants.

TL;DR: With Very High Probability the worst case get/put complexity of a hashmap is O(logn).

How can I count all the lines of code in a directory recursively?

Excluding blank lines:

find . -name "*.php" | xargs grep -v -c '^$' | awk 'BEGIN {FS=":"} { $cnt = $cnt + $2} END {print $cnt}'

Including blank lines:

find . -name "*.php" | xargs wc -l

TypeError: method() takes 1 positional argument but 2 were given

It occurs when you don't specify the no of parameters the __init__() or any other method looking for.

For example:

class Dog:
    def __init__(self):
        print("IN INIT METHOD")

    def __unicode__(self,):
        print("IN UNICODE METHOD")

    def __str__(self):
        print("IN STR METHOD")

obj=Dog("JIMMY",1,2,3,"WOOF")

When you run the above programme, it gives you an error like that:

TypeError: __init__() takes 1 positional argument but 6 were given

How we can get rid of this thing?

Just pass the parameters, what __init__() method looking for

class Dog:
    def __init__(self, dogname, dob_d, dob_m, dob_y, dogSpeakText):
        self.name_of_dog = dogname
        self.date_of_birth = dob_d
        self.month_of_birth = dob_m
        self.year_of_birth = dob_y
        self.sound_it_make = dogSpeakText

    def __unicode__(self, ):
        print("IN UNICODE METHOD")

    def __str__(self):
        print("IN STR METHOD")

obj = Dog("JIMMY", 1, 2, 3, "WOOF")
print(id(obj))

How to plot all the columns of a data frame in R

Using some of the tips above (especially thanks @daroczig for the names(df)[i] form) this function prints a histogram for numeric variables and a bar chart for factor variables. A good start to exploring a data frame:

par(mfrow=c(3,3),mar=c(2,1,1,1)) #my example has 9 columns

dfplot <- function(data.frame)
{
  df <- data.frame
  ln <- length(names(data.frame))
  for(i in 1:ln){
    mname <- substitute(df[,i])
      if(is.factor(df[,i])){
        plot(df[,i],main=names(df)[i])}
        else{hist(df[,i],main=names(df)[i])}
  }
}

Best wishes, Mat.

jQuery: Get the cursor position of text in input without browser specific code?

A warning about the Jquery Caret plugin.

It will conflict with the Masked Input plugin (or vice versa). Fortunately the Masked Input plugin includes a caret() function of its own, which you can use very similarly to the Caret plugin for your basic needs - $(element).caret().begin or .end

Setting PayPal return URL and making it auto return?

one way i have found:

try to insert this field into your generated form code:

<input type='hidden' name='rm' value='2'>

rm means return method;

2 means (post)

Than after user purchases and returns to your site url, then that url gets the POST parameters as well

p.s. if using php, try to insert var_dump($_POST); in your return url(script),then make a test purchase and when you return back to your site you will see what variables are got on your url.

Remove quotes from a character vector in R

Oracle get previous day records

Im a bit confused about this part "TO_DATE(TO_CHAR(CURRENT_DATE, 'YYYY-MM-DD'),'YYYY-MM-DD')". What were you trying to do with this clause ? The format that you are displaying in your result is the default format when you run the basic query of getting date from DUAL. Other than that, i did this in your query and it retrieved the previous day 'SELECT (CURRENT_DATE - 1) FROM Dual'. Do let me know if it works out for you and if not then do tell me about the problem. Thanks and all the best.

Failed to load resource under Chrome

There is a temporary work around in Reenable (temporary) showModalDialog support in Chrome (for Windows) 37+.

Basically, create a new string in the registry at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Google\Chrome\EnableDeprecatedWebPlatformFeatures

Under the EnableDeprecatedWebPlatformFeatures key, create a string value with the name 1 and a value of ShowModalDialog_EffectiveUntil20150430. To verify that the policy is enabled, visit chrome://policy URL.

How to import an existing X.509 certificate and private key in Java keystore to use in SSL?

Yes, it's indeed a sad fact that keytool has no functionality to import a private key.

For the record, at the end I went with the solution described here

How can I get nth element from a list?

The straight answer was already given: Use !!.

However newbies often tend to overuse this operator, which is expensive in Haskell (because you work on single linked lists, not on arrays). There are several useful techniques to avoid this, the easiest one is using zip. If you write zip ["foo","bar","baz"] [0..], you get a new list with the indices "attached" to each element in a pair: [("foo",0),("bar",1),("baz",2)], which is often exactly what you need.

How do I make a semi transparent background?

This works, but all the children of the element with this class will also become transparent, without any way of preventing that.

java.util.NoSuchElementException - Scanner reading user input

This has really puzzled me for a while but this is what I found in the end.

When you call, sc.close() in first method, it not only closes your scanner but closes your System.in input stream as well. You can verify it by printing its status at very top of the second method as :

    System.out.println(System.in.available());

So, now when you re-instantiate, Scanner in second method, it doesn't find any open System.in stream and hence the exception.

I doubt if there is any way out to reopen System.in because:

public void close() throws IOException --> Closes this input stream and releases any system resources associated with this stream. The general contract of close is that it closes the input stream. A closed stream cannot perform input operations and **cannot be reopened.**

The only good solution for your problem is to initiate the Scanner in your main method, pass that as argument in your two methods, and close it again in your main method e.g.:

main method related code block:

Scanner scanner = new Scanner(System.in);

// Ask users for quantities
PromptCustomerQty(customer, ProductList, scanner );

// Ask user for payment method
PromptCustomerPayment(customer, scanner );

//close the scanner
scanner.close();

Your Methods:

 public static void PromptCustomerQty(Customer customer,
                             ArrayList<Product> ProductList, Scanner scanner) {

    // no more scanner instantiation
    ...
    // no more scanner close
 }

 public static void PromptCustomerPayment (Customer customer, Scanner sc) {

    // no more scanner instantiation
    ...
    // no more scanner close
 }

Hope this gives you some insight about the failure and possible resolution.

how to update the multiple rows at a time using linq to sql?

This is what I did:

EF:

using (var context = new SomeDBContext())
{
    foreach (var item in model.ShopItems) // ShopItems is a posted list with values
    {
        var feature = context.Shop
                             .Where(h => h.ShopID == 123 && h.Type == item.Type).ToList();

        feature.ForEach(a => a.SortOrder = item.SortOrder);
    }

How do I find numeric columns in Pandas?

Please see the below code:

if(dataset.select_dtypes(include=[np.number]).shape[1] > 0):
display(dataset.select_dtypes(include=[np.number]).describe())
if(dataset.select_dtypes(include=[np.object]).shape[1] > 0):
display(dataset.select_dtypes(include=[np.object]).describe())

This way you can check whether the value are numeric such as float and int or the srting values. the second if statement is used for checking the string values which is referred by the object.

array_push() with key value pair

$data['cat'] = 'wagon';

That's all you need to add the key and value to the array.

Are there any log file about Windows Services Status?

Through the Computer management console, navigate through Event Viewer > Windows Logs > System. Every services that change state will be logged here.

You'll see info like: The XXXX service entered the running state or The XXXX service entered the stopped state, etc.

Always show vertical scrollbar in <select>

Owl Carousel, making custom navigation

You can use a JS and SCSS/Fontawesome combination for the Prev/Next buttons.

In your JS (this includes screenreader only/accessibility classes with Zurb Foundation):

$('.whatever-carousel').owlCarousel({
    ... ...
    navText: ["<span class='show-for-sr'>Previous</span>","<span class='show-for-sr'>Next</span>"]
    ... ...
})

In your SCSS this:

.owl-theme {

    .owl-nav {
        .owl-prev,
        .owl-next {
            font-family: FontAwesome;
            //border-radius: 50%;
            //padding: whatever-to-get-a-circle;
            transition: all, .2s, ease;
        }
        .owl-prev {
            &::before {
                content: "\f104";
            }
        }
        .owl-next {
            &::before {
                content: "\f105";
            }
        }
    }
}

For the FontAwesome font-family I happen to use the embed code in the document header:

<script src="//use.fontawesome.com/123456whatever.js"></script>

There are various ways to include FA, strokes/folks, but I find this is pretty fast and as I'm using webpack I can just about live with that 1 extra js server call.

And to update this - there's also this JS option for slightly more complex arrows, still with accessibility in mind:

$('.whatever-carousel').owlCarousel({
    navText: ["<span class=\"fa-stack fa-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><span class=\"show-for-sr\">Previous</span><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"></i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-left fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\" aria-hidden=\"true\"></i></span>","<span class=\"fa-stack fa-lg\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><span class=\"show-for-sr\">Next</span><i class=\"fa fa-circle fa-stack-2x\"></i><i class=\"fa fa-chevron-right fa-stack-1x fa-inverse\" aria-hidden=\"true\"></i></span>"]
})

Loads of escaping there, use single quotes instead if preferred.

And in the SCSS just comment out the ::before attrs:

.owl-prev {
        //&::before { content: "\f104"; }
    }
    .owl-next {
        //&::before { content: "\f105"; }
    }

Insert HTML with React Variable Statements (JSX)

By using '' you are making it to string. Use without inverted commas it will work fine.

How do I remove the height style from a DIV using jQuery?

to remove the height:

$('div#someDiv').css('height', '');
$('div#someDiv').css('height', null);

like John pointed out, set height to auto:

$('div#someDiv').css('height', 'auto');

(checked with jQuery 1.4)

SQL query to make all data in a column UPPER CASE?

If you want to only update on rows that are not currently uppercase (instead of all rows), you'd need to identify the difference using COLLATE like this:

UPDATE MyTable
SET    MyColumn = UPPER(MyColumn)
WHERE  MyColumn != UPPER(MyColumn) COLLATE Latin1_General_CS_AS

A Bit About Collation

Cases sensitivity is based on your collation settings, and is typically case insensitive by default.

Collation can be set at the Server, Database, Column, or Query Level:

-- Server
SELECT SERVERPROPERTY('COLLATION')
-- Database
SELECT name, collation_name FROM sys.databases
-- Column
SELECT COLUMN_NAME, COLLATION_NAME FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS WHERE CHARACTER_SET_NAME IS NOT NULL

Collation Names specify how a string should be encoded and read, for example:

  • Latin1_General_CI_AS ? Case Insensitive
  • Latin1_General_CS_AS ? Case Sensitive

Can you use a trailing comma in a JSON object?

From my past experience, I found that different browsers deal with trailing commas in JSON differently.

Both Firefox and Chrome handles it just fine. But IE (All versions) seems to break. I mean really break and stop reading the rest of the script.

Keeping that in mind, and also the fact that it's always nice to write compliant code, I suggest spending the extra effort of making sure that there's no trailing comma.

:)

How to replace deprecated android.support.v4.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle

you must use import android.support.v7.app.ActionBarDrawerToggle;

and use the constructor

public CustomActionBarDrawerToggle(Activity mActivity,DrawerLayout mDrawerLayout)
{
    super(mActivity, mDrawerLayout, R.string.ns_menu_open, R.string.ns_menu_close);
}

and if the drawer toggle button becomes dark then you must use the supportActionBar provided in the support library.

You can implement supportActionbar from this link: http://developer.android.com/training/basics/actionbar/setting-up.html

`ui-router` $stateParams vs. $state.params

I have a root state which resolves sth. Passing $state as a resolve parameter won't guarantee the availability for $state.params. But using $stateParams will.

var rootState = {
    name: 'root',
    url: '/:stubCompanyId',
    abstract: true,
    ...
};

// case 1:
rootState.resolve = {
    authInit: ['AuthenticationService', '$state', function (AuthenticationService, $state) {
        console.log('rootState.resolve', $state.params);
        return AuthenticationService.init($state.params);
    }]
};
// output:
// rootState.resolve Object {}

// case 2:
rootState.resolve = {
    authInit: ['AuthenticationService', '$stateParams', function (AuthenticationService, $stateParams) {
        console.log('rootState.resolve', $stateParams);
        return AuthenticationService.init($stateParams);
    }]
};
// output:
// rootState.resolve Object {stubCompanyId:...}

How to query MongoDB with "like"?

As Mongo shell support regex, that's completely possible.

db.users.findOne({"name" : /.*sometext.*/});

If we want the query to be case-insensitive, we can use "i" option, like shown below:

db.users.findOne({"name" : /.*sometext.*/i});

Return in Scala

I don't program Scala, but I use another language with implicit returns (Ruby). You have code after your if (elem.isEmpty) block -- the last line of code is what's returned, which is why you're not getting what you're expecting.

EDIT: Here's a simpler way to write your function too. Just use the boolean value of isEmpty and count to return true or false automatically:

def balanceMain(elem: List[Char]): Boolean =
{
    elem.isEmpty && count == 0
}

Insert variable values in the middle of a string

I would use a StringBuilder class for doing string manipulation as it will more efficient (being mutable)

string flights = "Flight A, B,C,D";
StringBuilder message = new StringBuilder();
message.Append("Hi We have these flights for you: ");
message.Append(flights);
message.Append(" . Which one do you want?");

MySQL INNER JOIN Alias

Use a seperate column to indicate the join condition

SELECT  t.importid,
        case
            when t.importid = g.home
            then 'home'
            else 'away'
        end as join_condition,
        g.network,
        g.date_start
FROM    game g
INNER JOIN team t ON (t.importid = g.home OR t.importid = g.away)
ORDER BY date_start DESC
LIMIT 7

What's a clean way to stop mongod on Mac OS X?

If you have installed mongodb community server via homebrew, then you can do:

brew services list

This will list the current services as below:

Name              Status  User          Plist
mongodb-community started thehaystacker /Users/thehaystacker/Library/LaunchAgents/homebrew.mxcl.mongodb-community.plist

redis             stopped

Then you can restart mongodb by first stopping and restart:

brew services stop mongodb
brew services start mongodb

Creating an IFRAME using JavaScript

It is better to process HTML as a template than to build nodes via JavaScript (HTML is not XML after all.) You can keep your IFRAME's HTML syntax clean by using a template and then appending the template's contents into another DIV.

<div id="placeholder"></div>

How to list the contents of a package using YUM?

I don't think you can list the contents of a package using yum, but if you have the .rpm file on your local system (as will most likely be the case for all installed packages), you can use the rpm command to list the contents of that package like so:

rpm -qlp /path/to/fileToList.rpm

If you don't have the package file (.rpm), but you have the package installed, try this:

rpm -ql packageName

Javascript + Regex = Nothing to repeat error?

You need to double the backslashes used to escape the regular expression special characters. However, as @Bohemian points out, most of those backslashes aren't needed. Unfortunately, his answer suffers from the same problem as yours. What you actually want is:

The backslash is being interpreted by the code that reads the string, rather than passed to the regular expression parser. You want:

"[\\[\\]?*+|{}\\\\()@.\n\r]"

Note the quadrupled backslash. That is definitely needed. The string passed to the regular expression compiler is then identical to @Bohemian's string, and works correctly.

How to access command line arguments of the caller inside a function?

If you want to have your arguments C style (array of arguments + number of arguments) you can use $@ and $#.

$# gives you the number of arguments.
$@ gives you all arguments. You can turn this into an array by args=("$@").

So for example:

args=("$@")
echo $# arguments passed
echo ${args[0]} ${args[1]} ${args[2]}

Note that here ${args[0]} actually is the 1st argument and not the name of your script.

Decimal or numeric values in regular expression validation

A simple regex to match a numeric input and optional 2 digits decimal.

/^\d*(\.)?(\d{0,2})?$/

You can modify the {0,2} to match your decimal preference {min, max}

Snippet for validation:

_x000D_
_x000D_
const source = document.getElementById('source');
source.addEventListener('input', allowOnlyNumberAndDecimals);

function allowOnlyNumberAndDecimals(e) {
  let str = e.target.value
  const regExp = /^\d*(\.)?(\d{0,2})?$/

  status = regExp.test(str) ? 'valid' : 'invalid'

  console.log(status + ' : ' + source.value)
}
_x000D_
<input type="text" id="source" />

How can I convert string to datetime with format specification in JavaScript?

time = "2017-01-18T17:02:09.000+05:30"

t = new Date(time)

hr = ("0" + t.getHours()).slice(-2);
min = ("0" + t.getMinutes()).slice(-2);
sec = ("0" + t.getSeconds()).slice(-2);

t.getFullYear()+"-"+t.getMonth()+1+"-"+t.getDate()+" "+hr+":"+min+":"+sec

How to fix java.net.SocketException: Broken pipe?

The cause is that the remote peer closes its socket (crash for example), so if you try to write data to him for example, you will get this. to solve that, protect read/write to socket operations between (try catch), then manage the lose connection case into the catch (renew connection, stop program, ...etc):

 try {
      /* your code */
 } catch (SocketException e) {
      e.printStackTrace();
      /* insert your failure processings here */
 }

I want to truncate a text or line with ellipsis using JavaScript

This will put the ellipsis in the center of the line:

function truncate( str, max, sep ) {

    // Default to 10 characters
    max = max || 10;

    var len = str.length;
    if(len > max){

        // Default to elipsis
        sep = sep || "...";

        var seplen = sep.length;

        // If seperator is larger than character limit,
        // well then we don't want to just show the seperator,
        // so just show right hand side of the string.
        if(seplen > max) {
            return str.substr(len - max);
        }

        // Half the difference between max and string length.
        // Multiply negative because small minus big.
        // Must account for length of separator too.
        var n = -0.5 * (max - len - seplen);

        // This gives us the centerline.
        var center = len/2;

        var front = str.substr(0, center - n);
        var back = str.substr(len - center + n); // without second arg, will automatically go to end of line.

        return front + sep + back;

    }

    return str;
}

console.log( truncate("123456789abcde") ); // 123...bcde (using built-in defaults)
console.log( truncate("123456789abcde", 8) ); // 12...cde (max of 8 characters)
console.log( truncate("123456789abcde", 12, "_") ); // 12345_9abcde (customize the separator)

For example:

1234567890 --> 1234...8910

And:

A really long string --> A real...string

Not perfect, but functional. Forgive the over-commenting... for the noobs.

How to add Class in <li> using wp_nav_menu() in Wordpress?

I added a class to easily implement menu arguments. So you can customize and include in your function like this:

include_once get_template_directory() . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . "your-directory" . DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR . "Menu.php";

<?php $menu = (new Menu('your-theme-location'))
            ->setMenuClass('your-menu')
            ->setMenuID('your-menu-id')
            ->setListClass('your-menu-class')
            ->setLinkClass('your-menu-link anchor') ?>

            // Print your menu
            <?php $menu->showMenu() ?>
<?php

class Menu
{
    private $args = [
        'theme_location' => '',
        'container' => '',
        'menu_id' => '',
        'menu_class' => '',
        'add_li_class' => '',
        'link_class' => ''
    ];

    public function __construct($themeLocation)
    {
        add_filter('nav_menu_css_class', [$this,'add_additional_class_on_li'], 1, 3);
        add_filter( 'nav_menu_link_attributes', [$this,'add_menu_link_class'], 1, 3 );

        $this->args['theme_location'] = $themeLocation;
    }

    public function wrapWithTag($tagName){
        $this->args['container'] = $tagName;
        return $this;
    }

    public function setMenuID($id)
    {
        $this->args['menu_id'] = $id;
        return $this;
    }

    public function setMenuClass($class)
    {
        $this->args['menu_class'] = $class;
        return $this;
    }

    public function setListClass($class)
    {
        $this->args['add_li_class'] = $class;
        return $this;
    }

    public function setLinkClass($class)
    {
        $this->args['link_class'] = $class;
        return $this;
    }

    public function showMenu()
    {
        return wp_nav_menu($this->args);
    }

    function add_additional_class_on_li($classes, $item, $args) {
        if(isset($args->add_li_class)) {
            $classes[] = $args->add_li_class;
        }
        return $classes;
    }

    function add_menu_link_class( $atts, $item, $args ) {
        if (property_exists($args, 'link_class')) {
            $atts['class'] = $args->link_class;
        }
        return $atts;
    }
}

How to display both icon and title of action inside ActionBar?

The solution I find is to use custom action Layout: Here is XML for menu.

<menu xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
xmlns:Eventapp="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res-auto">
<!-- This is a comment. -->
    <item
        android:id="@+id/action_create"
        android:actionLayout="@layout/action_view_details_layout"
        android:orderInCategory="50"
        android:showAsAction = "always"/>
</menu>

The Layout is

<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:orientation="horizontal"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent">

<TextView
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:paddingLeft="5dp"
    android:gravity="center"
    android:text="@string/create"/>

<ImageView
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:paddingLeft="5dp"
    android:paddingRight="5dp"
    android:gravity="center"
    android:src="@drawable/ic_action_v"/>

</LinearLayout>

this will show the icon and the text together.

To get the clickitem the the fragment or activity:

public void onCreateOptionsMenu(Menu menu, MenuInflater inflater)
{
    //super.onCreateOptionsMenu(menu, inflater);
    inflater.inflate(R.menu.menu_details_fragment, menu);
    View view = menu.findItem(R.id.action_create).getActionView();
    view.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
        @Override
        public void onClick(View v) {
            Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "Clicked", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
        }
    });
}

How to use RecyclerView inside NestedScrollView?

if you want to use RecyclerView in NestedScrollView this is a simple tricky, just set :

RecyclerView

  • recyclerView.setHasFixedSize(false) (java/kt)

  • android:nestedScrollingEnabled="false"

  • android:layout_height="wrap_content"

  • android:overScrollMode="never"

NestedScrollView

  • android:fillViewport="true"

this is work for me, and you can use many RecyclerView in NestedScrollView with this too.

HMAC-SHA256 Algorithm for signature calculation

Here is my solution:

public static String encode(String key, String data) throws Exception {
  Mac sha256_HMAC = Mac.getInstance("HmacSHA256");
  SecretKeySpec secret_key = new SecretKeySpec(key.getBytes("UTF-8"), "HmacSHA256");
  sha256_HMAC.init(secret_key);

  return Hex.encodeHexString(sha256_HMAC.doFinal(data.getBytes("UTF-8")));
}

public static void main(String [] args) throws Exception {
  System.out.println(encode("key", "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"));
}

Or you can return the hash encoded in Base64:

Base64.encodeBase64String(sha256_HMAC.doFinal(data.getBytes("UTF-8")));

The output in hex is as expected:

HTTP test server accepting GET/POST requests

nc one-liner local test server

Setup a local test server in one line under Linux:

nc -kdl localhost 8000

Sample request maker on another shell:

wget http://localhost:8000

then on the first shell you see the request that was made appear:

GET / HTTP/1.1
User-Agent: Wget/1.19.4 (linux-gnu)
Accept: */*
Accept-Encoding: identity
Host: localhost:8000
Connection: Keep-Alive

nc from the netcat-openbsd package is widely available and pre-installed on Ubuntu.

Tested on Ubuntu 18.04.

Controller not a function, got undefined, while defining controllers globally

With Angular 1.3+ you can no longer use global controller declaration on the global scope (Without explicit registration). You would need to register the controller using module.controller syntax.

Example:-

angular.module('app', [])
    .controller('ContactController', ['$scope', function ContactController($scope) {
        $scope.contacts = ["[email protected]", "[email protected]"];

        $scope.add = function() {
            $scope.contacts.push($scope.newcontact);
            $scope.newcontact = "";

        };
    }]);

or

function ContactController($scope) {
    $scope.contacts = ["[email protected]", "[email protected]"];

    $scope.add = function() {
        $scope.contacts.push($scope.newcontact);
        $scope.newcontact = "";
    };
}
ContactController.$inject = ['$scope'];
angular.module('app', []).controller('ContactController', ContactController);

It is a breaking change but it can be turned off to use globals by using allowGlobals.

Example:-

angular.module('app')
    .config(['$controllerProvider', function($controllerProvider) {
        $controllerProvider.allowGlobals();
    }]);

Here is the comment from Angular source:-

  • check if a controller with given name is registered via $controllerProvider
  • check if evaluating the string on the current scope returns a constructor
  • if $controllerProvider#allowGlobals, check window[constructor] on the global window object (not recommended)
 .....

expression = controllers.hasOwnProperty(constructor)
            ? controllers[constructor]
            : getter(locals.$scope, constructor, true) ||
                (globals ? getter($window, constructor, true) : undefined);

Some additional checks:-

  • Do Make sure to put the appname in ng-app directive on your angular root element (eg:- html) as well. Example:- ng-app="myApp"

  • If everything is fine and you are still getting the issue do remember to make sure you have the right file included in the scripts.

  • You have not defined the same module twice in different places which results in any entities defined previously on the same module to be cleared out, Example angular.module('app',[]).controller(.. and again in another place angular.module('app',[]).service(.. (with both the scripts included of course) can cause the previously registered controller on the module app to be cleared out with the second recreation of module.

How to copy a file from one directory to another using PHP?

You can use both rename() and copy().

I tend to prefer to use rename if I no longer require the source file to stay in its location.

How to search JSON data in MySQL?

If your are using MySQL Latest version following may help to reach your requirement.

select * from products where attribs_json->"$.feature.value[*]" in (1,3)

Quickly create large file on a Windows system

Check out RDFC http://www.bertel.de/software/rdfc/index-en.html

RDFC is probably not the fastest, but it does allocate data blocks. The absolutely fastest would have to use lower level API to just obtain cluster chains and put them into MFT without writing data.

Beware that there's no silver bullet here - if "creation" returns instantly that means you got a sparse file which just fakes a large file, but you won't get data blocks/chains till you write into it. If you just read is you'd get very fast zeros which could make you believe that your drive all of the sudden got blazingly fast :-)

What is the best way to detect a mobile device?

You can't rely on navigator.userAgent, not every device reveals its real OS. On my HTC for example, it depends on the settings ("using mobile version" on/off). On http://my.clockodo.com, we simply used screen.width to detect small devices. Unfortunately, in some Android versions there's a bug with screen.width. You can combine this way with the userAgent:

if(screen.width < 500 ||
 navigator.userAgent.match(/Android/i) ||
 navigator.userAgent.match(/webOS/i) ||
 navigator.userAgent.match(/iPhone/i) ||
 navigator.userAgent.match(/iPod/i)) {
alert("This is a mobile device");
}

How to auto adjust the <div> height according to content in it?

I have made some reach to do auto adjust of height for my project and I think I found a solution

[CSS]
    overflow: auto;
    overflow-x: hidden;
    overflow-y: hidden;

This can be attached to prime div (e.g. warpper, but not to body or html cause the page will not scroll down) in your css file and inherited by other child classes and write into them overflow: inherit; attribute.

Notice: Odd thing is that my netbeans 7.2.1 IDE highlight overflow: inherit; as Unexpected value token inherit but all modern browser read this attribute fine.

This solution work very well into

  • firefox 18+
  • chorme 24+
  • ie 9+
  • opera 12+

I do not test it on previous versions of those browsers. If someone will check it, it will be nice.

Working copy locked error in tortoise svn while committing

I had tried various things, including "Clean Up" on lower subdirectories. Finally, I tried updating the top level folder. Nothing. Then I read the "Clean up top level" tip. I tried that. The clean up part succeeded, but the lock remained. My solution was to go back to the top level, clean up, then clean up each red (!) folder I could drill down to. After all was "Cleaned up", the update worked perfectly. The "break lock" tip looks good, too, with the exception that someone on your team might have a legitimate lock on things.

Code for download video from Youtube on Java, Android

METHOD 1 ( Recommanded )

Library YouTubeExtractor

Add into your gradle file

 allprojects {
        repositories {
            maven { url "https://jitpack.io" }
        }
    }

And dependencies

 compile 'com.github.Commit451.YouTubeExtractor:youtubeextractor:2.1.0'

Add this small code and you done. Demo HERE

public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity {

    private static final String YOUTUBE_ID = "ea4-5mrpGfE";

    private final YouTubeExtractor mExtractor = YouTubeExtractor.create();

    private Callback<YouTubeExtractionResult> mExtractionCallback = new Callback<YouTubeExtractionResult>() {
        @Override
        public void onResponse(Call<YouTubeExtractionResult> call, Response<YouTubeExtractionResult> response) {
            bindVideoResult(response.body());
        }

        @Override
        public void onFailure(Call<YouTubeExtractionResult> call, Throwable t) {
            onError(t);
        }
    };

    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

// For android youtube extractor library com.github.Commit451.YouTubeExtractor:youtubeextractor:2.1.0'
        mExtractor.extract(YOUTUBE_ID).enqueue(mExtractionCallback);

    }

    private void onError(Throwable t) {
        t.printStackTrace();
        Toast.makeText(MainActivity.this, "It failed to extract. So sad", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
    }

    private void bindVideoResult(YouTubeExtractionResult result) {

// Here you can get download url link
        Log.d("OnSuccess", "Got a result with the best url: " + result.getBestAvailableQualityVideoUri());

        Toast.makeText(this, "result : " + result.getSd360VideoUri(), Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
    }
}

You can get download link in bindVideoResult() method.

METHOD 2

Using this library android-youtubeExtractor

Add into gradle file

repositories {
    maven { url "https://jitpack.io" }
}

compile 'com.github.HaarigerHarald:android-youtubeExtractor:master-SNAPSHOT'

Here is the code for getting download url.

       String youtubeLink = "http://youtube.com/watch?v=xxxx";

    YouTubeUriExtractor ytEx = new YouTubeUriExtractor(this) {
        @Override
        public void onUrisAvailable(String videoId, String videoTitle, SparseArray<YtFile> ytFiles) {
            if (ytFiles != null) {
                int itag = 22;
// Here you can get download url
                String downloadUrl = ytFiles.get(itag).getUrl();
            }
        }
    };

    ytEx.execute(youtubeLink);

How do I use modulus for float/double?

fmod is the standard C function for handling floating-point modulus; I imagine your source was saying that Java handles floating-point modulus the same as C's fmod function. In Java you can use the % operator on doubles the same as on integers:

int x = 5 % 3; // x = 2
double y = .5 % .3; // y = .2

Android - java.lang.SecurityException: Permission Denial: starting Intent

Just uncheck all the USB debugging options and toggle the developer options to OFF. Then restart your phone and switch the developer and USB debugging on. You are ready to go!

Counting in a FOR loop using Windows Batch script

It's not working because the entire for loop (from the for to the final closing parenthesis, including the commands between those) is being evaluated when it's encountered, before it begins executing.

In other words, %count% is replaced with its value 1 before running the loop.

What you need is something like:

setlocal enableextensions enabledelayedexpansion
set /a count = 1
for /f "tokens=*" %%a in (config.properties) do (
  set /a count += 1
  echo !count!
)
endlocal

Delayed expansion using ! instead of % will give you the expected behaviour. See also here.

Also keep in mind that setlocal/endlocal actually limit scope of things changed inside so that they don't leak out. If you want to use count after the endlocal, you have to use a "trick" made possible by the very problem you're having:

endlocal && set count=%count%

Let's say count has become 7 within the inner scope. Because the entire command is interpreted before execution, it effectively becomes:

endlocal && set count=7

Then, when it's executed, the inner scope is closed off, returning count to it's original value. But, since the setting of count to seven happens in the outer scope, it's effectively leaking the information you need.

You can string together multiple sub-commands to leak as much information as you need:

endlocal && set count=%count% && set something_else=%something_else%

How to use the DropDownList's SelectedIndexChanged event

I think this is the culprit:

cmd = new SqlCommand(query, con);

DataTable dt = Select(query);

cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();

ddtype.DataSource = dt;

I don't know what that code is supposed to do, but it looks like you want to create an SqlDataReader for that, as explained here and all over the web if you search for "SqlCommand DropDownList DataSource":

cmd = new SqlCommand(query, con);
ddtype.DataSource = cmd.ExecuteReader();

Or you can create a DataTable as explained here:

cmd = new SqlCommand(query, con);

SqlDataAdapter listQueryAdapter = new SqlDataAdapter(cmd);
DataTable listTable = new DataTable();
listQueryAdapter.Fill(listTable);

ddtype.DataSource = listTable;

How to check if an user is logged in Symfony2 inside a controller?

It's good practise to extend from a baseController and implement some base functions implement a function to check if the user instance is null like this if the user form the Userinterface then there is no user logged in

/**

*/
class BaseController extends AbstractController
{

    /**
     * @return User

     */
    protected function getUser(): ?User
    {
        return parent::getUser();
    }

    /**
     * @return bool
     */
    protected function isUserLoggedIn(): bool
    {
        return $this->getUser() instanceof User;
    }
}

malloc an array of struct pointers

I agree with @maverik above, I prefer not to hide the details with a typedef. Especially when you are trying to understand what is going on. I also prefer to see everything instead of a partial code snippet. With that said, here is a malloc and free of a complex structure.

The code uses the ms visual studio leak detector so you can experiment with the potential leaks.

#include "stdafx.h"

#include <string.h>
#include "msc-lzw.h"

#define _CRTDBG_MAP_ALLOC
#include <stdlib.h>

// key is int
// value is char buffer

"NoClassDefFoundError: Could not initialize class" error

NoClassDefFound error is a nebulous error and is often hiding a more serious issue. It is not the same as ClassNotFoundException (which is thrown when the class is just plain not there).

NoClassDefFound may indicate the class is not there, as the javadocs indicate, but it is typically thrown when, after the classloader has loaded the bytes for the class and calls "defineClass" on them. Also carefully check your full stack trace for other clues or possible "cause" Exceptions (though your particular backtrace shows none).

The first place to look when you get a NoClassDefFoundError is in the static bits of your class i.e. any initialization that takes place during the defining of the class. If this fails it will throw a NoClassDefFoundError - it's supposed to throw an ExceptionInInitializerError and indicate the details of the problem but in my experience, these are rare. It will only do the ExceptionInInitializerError the first time it tries to define the class, after that it will just throw NoClassDefFound. So look at earlier logs.

I would thus suggest looking at the code in that HibernateTransactionInterceptor line and seeing what it is requiring. It seems that it is unable to define the class SpringFactory. So maybe check the initialization code in that class, that might help. If you can debug it, stop it at the last line above (17) and debug into so you can try find the exact line that is causing the exception. Also check higher up in the log, if you very lucky there might be an ExceptionInInitializerError.

How to insert a value that contains an apostrophe (single quote)?

You need to escape the apostrophe. In T-SQL this is with a double apostrophe, so your insert statement becomes:

Insert into Person

Values
'Joe', 'O''Brien'

How to make a .jar out from an Android Studio project

  • Open build.gradle for library project enter image description here

  • Write two tasks in build.gradle -- deleteJar and createJar and add rule createJar.dependsOn(deleteJar, build) enter image description here

The code from above:

task deleteJar(type: Delete) {
    delete 'libs/jars/logmanagementlib.jar'
}

task createJar(type: Copy) {
    from('build/intermediates/bundles/release/')
    into('libs/jars/')
    include('classes.jar')
    rename('classes.jar', 'logmanagementlib.jar')
}

createJar.dependsOn(deleteJar, build)
  • Expand gradle panel from right and open all tasks under yourlibrary->others. You will see two new tasks there -- createJar and deleteJar enter image description here

  • Double click on createJar enter image description here

  • Once the task run successfully, get your generated jar from path mentioned in createJar task i.e. libs/xxxx.jar enter image description here

  • copy the newly generated jar into your required project's lib folder-->right click-->select "add as library"

How to get script of SQL Server data?

Check out SSMS Tool Pack. It works in Management Studio 2005 and 2008. There is an option to generate insert statements which I've found helpful moving small amounts of data from one system to another.

With this option you will have to script out the DDL separately.

Bootstrap 3: Keep selected tab on page refresh

I prefer storing the selected tab in the hashvalue of the window. This also enables sending links to colleagues, who than see "the same" page. The trick is to change the hash of the location when another tab is selected. If you already use # in your page, possibly the hash tag has to be split. In my app, I use ":" as hash value separator.

<ul class="nav nav-tabs" id="myTab">
  <li class="active"><a href="#home">Home</a></li>
  <li><a href="#profile">Profile</a></li>
  <li><a href="#messages">Messages</a></li>
  <li><a href="#settings">Settings</a></li>
</ul>

<div class="tab-content">
  <div class="tab-pane active" id="home">home</div>
  <div class="tab-pane" id="profile">profile</div>
  <div class="tab-pane" id="messages">messages</div>
  <div class="tab-pane" id="settings">settings</div>
</div>

JavaScript, has to be embedded after the above in a <script>...</script> part.

$('#myTab a').click(function(e) {
  e.preventDefault();
  $(this).tab('show');
});

// store the currently selected tab in the hash value
$("ul.nav-tabs > li > a").on("shown.bs.tab", function(e) {
  var id = $(e.target).attr("href").substr(1);
  window.location.hash = id;
});

// on load of the page: switch to the currently selected tab
var hash = window.location.hash;
$('#myTab a[href="' + hash + '"]').tab('show');

UITableView set to static cells. Is it possible to hide some of the cells programmatically?

For the easiest scenario when you hide cells at the very bottom of table view, you could adjust tableView's contentInset after you hide cell:

- (void)adjustBottomInsetForHiddenSections:(NSInteger)numberOfHiddenSections
{
    CGFloat bottomInset = numberOfHiddenSections * 44.0; // or any other 'magic number
    self.tableView.contentInset = UIEdgeInsetsMake(self.tableView.contentInset.top, self.tableView.contentInset.left, -bottomInset, self.tableView.contentInset.right);
}

python - checking odd/even numbers and changing outputs on number size

I guess the easiest and most basic way is this

import math

number = int (input ('Enter number: '))

if number % 2 == 0 and number != 0:
    print ('Even number')
elif number == 0:
    print ('Zero is neither even, nor odd.')
else:
    print ('Odd number')

Just basic conditions and math. It also minds zero, which is neither even, nor odd and you give any number you want by input so it's very variable.

Bootstrap: How do I identify the Bootstrap version?

In the top of the bootstrap.css you should have comments like the below:

/*!
 * Bootstrap v2.3.1
 *
 * Copyright 2012 Twitter, Inc
 * Licensed under the Apache License v2.0
 * http://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0
 *
 * Designed and built with all the love in the world @twitter by @mdo and @fat.
 */

If they are not there, then they have probably been deleted.

VERSIONS:

You can review version history here. Backward compatibility shouldn't be broken if the source is v2.0.0 (Jan 2012) and above. If it is prior to v2.0.0 there are details on upgrading here.

Is there a way to set background-image as a base64 encoded image?

What I usually do, is to store the full string into a variable first, like so:

<?php
$img_id = 'data:image/png;base64,iVBORw0KGgoAAAAAAAAyCAY...';
?>

Then, where I want either JS to do something with that variable:

<script type="text/javascript">
document.getElementById("img_id").backgroundImage="url('<?php echo $img_id; ?>')";
</script>

You could reference the same variable via PHP directly using something like:

<img src="<?php echo $img_id; ?>">

Works for me ;)

how to run vibrate continuously in iphone?

Getting a Request.Headers value

Firstly you don't do this in your view. You do it in the controller and return a view model to the view so that the view doesn't need to care about custom HTTP headers but just displaying data on the view model:

public ActionResult Index()
{
    var xyzComponent = Request.Headers["xyzComponent"];
    var model = new MyModel
    {
        IsCustomHeaderSet = (xyzComponent != null)
    }
    return View(model);
}

                  .ThenBy(x => x.Product.Price)
                  .ToList();

Byte and char conversion in Java

A character in Java is a Unicode code-unit which is treated as an unsigned number. So if you perform c = (char)b the value you get is 2^16 - 56 or 65536 - 56.

Or more precisely, the byte is first converted to a signed integer with the value 0xFFFFFFC8 using sign extension in a widening conversion. This in turn is then narrowed down to 0xFFC8 when casting to a char, which translates to the positive number 65480.

From the language specification:

5.1.4. Widening and Narrowing Primitive Conversion

First, the byte is converted to an int via widening primitive conversion (§5.1.2), and then the resulting int is converted to a char by narrowing primitive conversion (§5.1.3).

To get the right point use char c = (char) (b & 0xFF) which first converts the byte value of b to the positive integer 200 by using a mask, zeroing the top 24 bits after conversion: 0xFFFFFFC8 becomes 0x000000C8 or the positive number 200 in decimals.

Above is a direct explanation of what happens during conversion between the byte, int and char primitive types.

If you want to encode/decode characters from bytes, use Charset, CharsetEncoder, CharsetDecoder or one of the convenience methods such as new String(byte[] bytes, Charset charset) or String#toBytes(Charset charset). You can get the character set (such as UTF-8 or Windows-1252) from StandardCharsets.

Android get current Locale, not default

The default Locale is constructed statically at runtime for your application process from the system property settings, so it will represent the Locale selected on that device when the application was launched. Typically, this is fine, but it does mean that if the user changes their Locale in settings after your application process is running, the value of getDefaultLocale() probably will not be immediately updated.

If you need to trap events like this for some reason in your application, you might instead try obtaining the Locale available from the resource Configuration object, i.e.

Locale current = getResources().getConfiguration().locale;

You may find that this value is updated more quickly after a settings change if that is necessary for your application.

Find all elements on a page whose element ID contains a certain text using jQuery

If you're finding by Contains then it'll be like this

    $("input[id*='DiscountType']").each(function (i, el) {

     });

If you're finding by Starts With then it'll be like this

         //It'll be an array of elements
     });

If you're finding by Ends With then it'll be like this

     $("input[id$='DiscountType']").each(function (i, el) {
         //It'll be an array of elements
     });

If you want to select elements which id is not a given string

    $("input[id!='DiscountType']").each(function (i, el) {
         //It'll be an array of elements
     });

If you want to select elements which name contains a given word, delimited by spaces

     $("input[name~='DiscountType']").each(function (i, el) {
         //It'll be an array of elements
     });

If you want to select elements which id is equal to a given string or starting with that string followed by a hyphen

     $("input[id|='DiscountType']").each(function (i, el) {
         //It'll be an array of elements
     });

When to use 'raise NotImplementedError'?

As the documentation states [docs],

In user defined base classes, abstract methods should raise this exception when they require derived classes to override the method, or while the class is being developed to indicate that the real implementation still needs to be added.

Note that although the main stated use case this error is the indication of abstract methods that should be implemented on inherited classes, you can use it anyhow you'd like, like for indication of a TODO marker.

Laravel 5: Display HTML with Blade

There is another way. If object purpose is to render html you can implement \Illuminate\Contracts\Support\Htmlable contract that has toHtml() method.

Then you can render that object from blade like this: {{ $someObject }} (note, no need for {!! !!} syntax).

Also if you want to return html property and you know it will be html, use \Illuminate\Support\HtmlString class like this:

public function getProductDescription()
{
    return new HtmlString($this->description);
}

and then use it like {{ $product->getProductDescription() }}.

Of course be responsible when directly rendering raw html on page.

Programmatically close aspx page from code behind

A postback is the process of re-loading a page, so if you want the page to close after the postback then you need to set your window.close() javascript to run with the browser's onload event during that postback, normally done using the ClientScript.RegisterStartupScript() function.

But are you sure this is what you want to do? Closing pages tends to piss off users.

How to scroll to the bottom of a RecyclerView? scrollToPosition doesn't work

AttributeError: 'dict' object has no attribute 'predictors'

The dict.items iterates over the key-value pairs of a dictionary. Therefore for key, value in dictionary.items() will loop over each pair. This is documented information and you can check it out in the official web page, or even easier, open a python console and type help(dict.items). And now, just as an example:

>>> d = {'hello': 34, 'world': 2999}
>>> for key, value in d.items():
...   print key, value
...
world 2999
hello 34

The AttributeError is an exception thrown when an object does not have the attribute you tried to access. The class dict does not have any predictors attribute (now you know where to check it :) ), and therefore it complains when you try to access it. As easy as that.

XPath to fetch SQL XML value

I always go back to this article SQL Server 2005 XQuery and XML-DML - Part 1 to know how to use the XML features in SQL Server 2005.

For basic XPath know-how, I'd recommend the W3Schools tutorial.

CSS Input with width: 100% goes outside parent's bound

Padding is added to the overall width. Because your container has a pixel width, you are better off giving the inputs a pixel width too, but remember to remove the padding and border from the width you set to avoid the same issue.

How to access List elements

Recursive solution to print all items in a list:

def printItems(l):
   for i in l:
      if isinstance(i,list):
         printItems(i)
      else:
         print i

l = [['vegas','London'],['US','UK']]
printItems(l)

Failed to load resource 404 (Not Found) - file location error?

Looks like the path you gave doesn't have any bootstrap files in them.

href="~/lib/bootstrap/dist/css/bootstrap.min.css"

Make sure the files exist over there , else point the files to the correct path, which should be in your case

Pandas - replacing column values

Yes, you are using it incorrectly, Series.replace() is not inplace operation by default, it returns the replaced dataframe/series, you need to assign it back to your dataFrame/Series for its effect to occur. Or if you need to do it inplace, you need to specify the inplace keyword argument as True Example -

data['sex'].replace(0, 'Female',inplace=True)
data['sex'].replace(1, 'Male',inplace=True)

Also, you can combine the above into a single replace function call by using list for both to_replace argument as well as value argument , Example -

data['sex'].replace([0,1],['Female','Male'],inplace=True)

Example/Demo -

In [10]: data = pd.DataFrame([[1,0],[0,1],[1,0],[0,1]], columns=["sex", "split"])

In [11]: data['sex'].replace([0,1],['Female','Male'],inplace=True)

In [12]: data
Out[12]:
      sex  split
0    Male      0
1  Female      1
2    Male      0
3  Female      1

You can also use a dictionary, Example -

In [15]: data = pd.DataFrame([[1,0],[0,1],[1,0],[0,1]], columns=["sex", "split"])

In [16]: data['sex'].replace({0:'Female',1:'Male'},inplace=True)

In [17]: data
Out[17]:
      sex  split
0    Male      0
1  Female      1
2    Male      0
3  Female      1

std::unique_lock<std::mutex> or std::lock_guard<std::mutex>?

Use lock_guard unless you need to be able to manually unlock the mutex in between without destroying the lock.

In particular, condition_variable unlocks its mutex when going to sleep upon calls to wait. That is why a lock_guard is not sufficient here.

If you're already on C++17 or later, consider using scoped_lock as a slightly improved version of lock_guard, with the same essential capabilities.

How do I find a list of Homebrew's installable packages?

From the man page:

search, -S text|/text/
Perform a substring search of formula names for text. If text is surrounded with slashes,
then it is interpreted as a regular expression. If no search term is given,
all available formula are displayed.

For your purposes, brew search will suffice.

Java Does Not Equal (!=) Not Working?

You need to use the method equals() when comparing a string, otherwise you're just comparing the object references to each other, so in your case you want:

VB.Net: Dynamically Select Image from My.Resources

Sometimes you must change the name (or check to get it automatically from compiler).

Example:

Filename = amp2-rot.png

It is not working as:

PictureBoxName.Image = resources.GetObject("amp2-rot.png")

It works, just as amp2_rot for me:

 PictureBox_L1.Image = My.Resources.Resource.amp2_rot

How do I rename the extension for a bunch of files?

rename 's/\.html$/\.txt/' *.html

does exactly what you want.

Why is list initialization (using curly braces) better than the alternatives?

It only safer as long as you don't build with -Wno-narrowing like say Google does in Chromium. If you do, then it is LESS safe. Without that flag the only unsafe cases will be fixed by C++20 though.

Note: A) Curly brackets are safer because they don't allow narrowing. B) Curly brackers are less safe because they can bypass private or deleted constructors, and call explicit marked constructors implicitly.

Those two combined means they are safer if what is inside is primitive constants, but less safe if they are objects (though fixed in C++20)

How to easily consume a web service from PHP

Say you were provided the following:

<x:Envelope xmlns:x="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:int="http://thesite.com/">
    <x:Header/>
    <x:Body>
        <int:authenticateLogin>
            <int:LoginId>12345</int:LoginId>
        </int:authenticateLogin>
    </x:Body>
</x:Envelope>

and

<s:Envelope xmlns:s="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/">
    <s:Body xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">
        <authenticateLoginResponse xmlns="http://thesite.com/">
            <authenticateLoginResult>
                <RequestStatus>true</RequestStatus>
                <UserName>003p0000006XKX3AAO</UserName>
                <BearerToken>Abcdef1234567890</BearerToken>
            </authenticateLoginResult>
        </authenticateLoginResponse>
    </s:Body>
</s:Envelope>

Let's say that accessing http://thesite.com/ said that the WSDL address is: http://thesite.com/PortalIntegratorService.svc?wsdl

$client = new SoapClient('http://thesite.com/PortalIntegratorService.svc?wsdl');
$result = $client->authenticateLogin(array('LoginId' => 12345));
if (!empty($result->authenticateLoginResult->RequestStatus)
    && !empty($result->authenticateLoginResult->UserName)) {
    echo 'The username is: '.$result->authenticateLoginResult->UserName;
}

As you can see, the items specified in the XML are used in the PHP code though the LoginId value can be changed.

How to save a list to a file and read it as a list type?

I am using pandas.

import pandas as pd
x = pd.Series([1,2,3,4,5])
x.to_excel('temp.xlsx')
y = list(pd.read_excel('temp.xlsx')[0])
print(y)

Use this if you are anyway importing pandas for other computations.

Best Practice: Access form elements by HTML id or name attribute?

I much prefer a 5th method. That is
[5] Use the special JavaScript identifier this to pass the form or field object to the function from the event handler.

Specifically, for forms:

<form id="form1" name="form1" onsubmit="return validateForm(this)">

and

// The form validation function takes the form object as the input parameter
function validateForm(thisForm) {
  if (thisform.fullname.value !=...

Using this technique, the function never has to know
- the order in which forms are defined in the page,
- the form ID, nor
- the form name

Similarly, for fields:

<input type="text" name="maxWeight">
...
<input type="text" name="item1Weight" onchange="return checkWeight(this)">
<input type="text" name="item2Weight" onchange="return checkWeight(this)">

and

function checkWeight(theField) {
  if (theField.value > theField.form.maxWeight.value) {
    alert ("The weight value " + theField.value + " is larger than the limit");
    return false;
  }
return true;
}

In this case, the function never has to know the name or id of a particular weight field, though it does need to know the name of the weight limit field.

Converting char* to float or double

You are missing an include : #include <stdlib.h>, so GCC creates an implicit declaration of atof and atod, leading to garbage values.

And the format specifier for double is %f, not %d (that is for integers).

#include <stdlib.h>
#include <stdio.h>

int main()
{
  char *test = "12.11";
  double temp = strtod(test,NULL);
  float ftemp = atof(test);
  printf("price: %f, %f",temp,ftemp);
  return 0;
}
/* Output */
price: 12.110000, 12.110000

Is it possible to use vh minus pixels in a CSS calc()?

It does work indeed. Issue was with my less compiler. It was compiled in to:

.container {
  min-height: calc(-51vh);
}

Fixed with the following code in less file:

.container {
  min-height: calc(~"100vh - 150px");
}

Unstaged changes left after git reset --hard

In my case, this helped when there were a bunch of empty files that git was tracking.

Converting an int into a 4 byte char array (C)

The issue with the conversion (the reason it's giving you a ffffff at the end) is because your hex integer (that you are using the & binary operator with) is interpreted as being signed. Cast it to an unsigned integer, and you'll be fine.

What is the difference between require() and library()?

There's not much of one in everyday work.

However, according to the documentation for both functions (accessed by putting a ? before the function name and hitting enter), require is used inside functions, as it outputs a warning and continues if the package is not found, whereas library will throw an error.

Format SQL in SQL Server Management Studio

There is a special trick I discovered by accident.

  1. Select the query you wish to format.
  2. Ctrl+Shift+Q (This will open your query in the query designer)
  3. Then just go OK Voila! Query designer will format your query for you. Caveat is that you can only do this for statements and not procedural code, but its better than nothing.

Must issue a STARTTLS command first

Google now has a feature stating that it won't allow insecure devices to send emails. When I ran my program it came up with the error in the first post. I had to go into my account and allow insecure apps to send emails, which I did by clicking on my account, going into the security tab, and allowing insecure apps to use my gmail.

"Comparison method violates its general contract!"

You can't compare object data like this:s1.getParent() == s2 - this will compare the object references. You should override equals function for Foo class and then compare them like this s1.getParent().equals(s2)

String replace a Backslash

sSource = sSource.replace("\\/", "/");
  • String is immutable - each method you invoke on it does not change its state. It returns a new instance holding the new state instead. So you have to assign the new value to a variable (it can be the same variable)
  • replaceAll(..) uses regex. You don't need that.

How do I raise an exception in Rails so it behaves like other Rails exceptions?

You don't have to do anything special, it should just be working.

When I have a fresh rails app with this controller:

class FooController < ApplicationController
  def index
    raise "error"
  end
end

and go to http://127.0.0.1:3000/foo/

I am seeing the exception with a stack trace.

You might not see the whole stacktrace in the console log because Rails (since 2.3) filters lines from the stack trace that come from the framework itself.

See config/initializers/backtrace_silencers.rb in your Rails project

Add button to a layout programmatically

This line:

layout = (LinearLayout) findViewById(R.id.statsviewlayout);

Looks for the "statsviewlayout" id in your current 'contentview'. Now you've set that here:

setContentView(new GraphTemperature(getApplicationContext()));

And i'm guessing that new "graphTemperature" does not set anything with that id.

It's a common mistake to think you can just find any view with findViewById. You can only find a view that is in the XML (or appointed by code and given an id).

The nullpointer will be thrown because the layout you're looking for isn't found, so

layout.addView(buyButton);

Throws that exception.

addition: Now if you want to get that view from an XML, you should use an inflater:

layout = (LinearLayout) View.inflate(this, R.layout.yourXMLYouWantToLoad, null);

assuming that you have your linearlayout in a file called "yourXMLYouWantToLoad.xml"

"Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation" error (mscorlib)

I know its kind of odd but I experienced this error for a c# application and finally I found out the problem is the Icon of the form! when I changed it everything just worked fine.

I should say that I had this error just in XP not in 7 or 8 .

How to declare an array inside MS SQL Server Stored Procedure?

Is there a reason why you aren't using a table variable and the aggregate SUM operator, instead of a cursor? SQL excels at set-oriented operations. 99.87% of the time that you find yourself using a cursor, there's a set-oriented alternative that's more efficient:

declare @MonthsSale table
(
MonthNumber int,
MonthName varchar(9),
MonthSale decimal(18,2)
)

insert into @MonthsSale
select
    1, 'January', 100.00
union select
    2, 'February', 200.00
union select
    3, 'March', 300.00
union select
    4, 'April', 400.00
union select
    5, 'May', 500.00
union select
    6, 'June', 600.00
union select
    7, 'July', 700.00
union select
    8, 'August', 800.00
union select
    9, 'September', 900.00
union select
    10, 'October', 1000.00
union select
    11, 'November', 1100.00
union select
    12, 'December', 1200.00

select * from @MonthsSale
select SUM(MonthSale) as [TotalSales] from @MonthsSale

How to create module-wide variables in Python?

You are falling for a subtle quirk. You cannot re-assign module-level variables inside a python function. I think this is there to stop people re-assigning stuff inside a function by accident.

You can access the module namespace, you just shouldn't try to re-assign. If your function assigns something, it automatically becomes a function variable - and python won't look in the module namespace.

You can do:

__DB_NAME__ = None

def func():
    if __DB_NAME__:
        connect(__DB_NAME__)
    else:
        connect(Default_value)

but you cannot re-assign __DB_NAME__ inside a function.

One workaround:

__DB_NAME__ = [None]

def func():
    if __DB_NAME__[0]:
        connect(__DB_NAME__[0])
    else:
        __DB_NAME__[0] = Default_value

Note, I'm not re-assigning __DB_NAME__, I'm just modifying its contents.

Java associative-array

Object[][] data = {
{"mykey1", "myval1"},
{"mykey2", "myval2"},
{new Date(), new Integer(1)},
};

Yes, this require iteration for searchting value by key, but if you need all of them, this will be the best choice.

Reloading/refreshing Kendo Grid

I never do refresh.

$('#GridName').data('kendoGrid').dataSource.read();

alone works for me all the time.

How do I find the version of Apache running without access to the command line?

httpd -v will give you the version of Apache running on your server (if you have SSH/shell access).

The output should be something like this:

Server version: Apache/2.2.3
Server built:   Oct 20 2011 17:00:12

As has been suggested you can also do apachectl -v which will give you the same output, but will be supported by more flavours of Linux.

Using BigDecimal to work with currencies

I would be radical. No BigDecimal.

Here is a great article https://lemnik.wordpress.com/2011/03/25/bigdecimal-and-your-money/

Ideas from here.

import java.math.BigDecimal;

public class Main {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        testConstructors();
        testEqualsAndCompare();
        testArithmetic();
    }

    private static void testEqualsAndCompare() {
        final BigDecimal zero = new BigDecimal("0.0");
        final BigDecimal zerozero = new BigDecimal("0.00");

        boolean zerosAreEqual = zero.equals(zerozero);
        boolean zerosAreEqual2 = zerozero.equals(zero);

        System.out.println("zerosAreEqual: " + zerosAreEqual + " " + zerosAreEqual2);

        int zerosCompare = zero.compareTo(zerozero);
        int zerosCompare2 = zerozero.compareTo(zero);
        System.out.println("zerosCompare: " + zerosCompare + " " + zerosCompare2);
    }

    private static void testArithmetic() {
        try {
            BigDecimal value = new BigDecimal(1);
            value = value.divide(new BigDecimal(3));
            System.out.println(value);
        } catch (ArithmeticException e) {
            System.out.println("Failed to devide. " + e.getMessage());
        }
    }

    private static void testConstructors() {
        double doubleValue = 35.7;
        BigDecimal fromDouble = new BigDecimal(doubleValue);
        BigDecimal fromString = new BigDecimal("35.7");

        boolean decimalsEqual = fromDouble.equals(fromString);
        boolean decimalsEqual2 = fromString.equals(fromDouble);

        System.out.println("From double: " + fromDouble);
        System.out.println("decimalsEqual: " + decimalsEqual + " " + decimalsEqual2);
    }
}

It prints

From double: 35.7000000000000028421709430404007434844970703125
decimalsEqual: false false
zerosAreEqual: false false
zerosCompare: 0 0
Failed to devide. Non-terminating decimal expansion; no exact representable decimal result.

How about storing BigDecimal into a database? Hell, it also stores as a double value??? At least, if I use mongoDb without any advanced configuration it will store BigDecimal.TEN as 1E1.

Possible solutions?

I came with one - use String to store BigDecimal in Java as a String into the database. You have validation, for example @NotNull, @Min(10), etc... Then you can use a trigger on update or save to check if current string is a number you need. There are no triggers for mongo though. Is there a built-in way for Mongodb trigger function calls?

There is one drawback I am having fun around - BigDecimal as String in Swagger defenition

I need to generate swagger, so our front-end team understands that I pass them a number presented as a String. DateTime for example presented as a String.

There is another cool solution I read in the article above... Use long to store precise numbers.

A standard long value can store the current value of the Unites States national debt (as cents, not dollars) 6477 times without any overflow. Whats more: it’s an integer type, not a floating point. This makes it easier and accurate to work with, and a guaranteed behavior.

Update

https://stackoverflow.com/a/27978223/4587961

Maybe in the future MongoDb will add support for BigDecimal. https://jira.mongodb.org/browse/SERVER-1393 3.3.8 seems to have this done.

It is an example of the second approach. Use scaling. http://www.technology-ebay.de/the-teams/mobile-de/blog/mapping-bigdecimals-with-morphia-for-mongodb.html

How to make the overflow CSS property work with hidden as value

Evidently, sometimes, the display properties of parent of the element containing the matter that shouldn't overflow should also be set to overflow:hidden as well, e.g.:

<div style="overflow: hidden">
  <div style="overflow: hidden">some text that should not overflow<div>
</div>

Why? I have no idea but it worked for me. See https://medium.com/@crrollyson/overflow-hidden-not-working-check-the-child-element-c33ac0c4f565 (ignore the sniping at stackoverflow!)

How do you create a dropdownlist from an enum in ASP.NET MVC?

So without Extension functions if you are looking for simple and easy.. This is what I did

<%= Html.DropDownListFor(x => x.CurrentAddress.State, new SelectList(Enum.GetValues(typeof(XXXXX.Sites.YYYY.Models.State))))%>

where XXXXX.Sites.YYYY.Models.State is an enum

Probably better to do helper function, but when time is short this will get the job done.

Hex colors: Numeric representation for "transparent"?

Transparency is a property outside the color itself, also known as alpha component. You can't code it as RGB.

If you want a transparent background, you can do this:

background: transparent;

Additionally, I don't know if it might be helpful or not but, you could set the opacity property:

.half{
  opacity: 0.5;
  filter: alpha(opacity=50);
}

You need both in order to get it working in IE and all other decent browsers.

How to change the default port of mysql from 3306 to 3360

Actually, you can just run the service using /mysqld --PORT 1234, it would force mysql to run on the specified port without change the cnf/ini file.

I just cought a case that cnf didn't work. It was weired... so I just use the cmd line as the shortcut and it works!

Ordering by specific field value first

Generally you can do

select * from your_table
order by case when name = 'core' then 1 else 2 end,
         priority

Especially in MySQL you can also do

select * from your_table
order by name <> 'core',
         priority

Since the result of a comparision in MySQL is either 0 or 1 and you can sort by that result.

Convert int to ASCII and back in Python

What about BASE58 encoding the URL? Like for example flickr does.

# note the missing lowercase L and the zero etc.
BASE58 = '123456789abcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTUVWXYZ'
url = ''
while node_id >= 58:
    div, mod = divmod(node_id, 58)
    url = BASE58[mod] + url
    node_id = int(div)

return 'http://short.com/%s' % BASE58[node_id] + url

Turning that back into a number isn't a big deal either.

Rails 3 execute custom sql query without a model

You could also use find_by_sql

# A simple SQL query spanning multiple tables
Post.find_by_sql "SELECT p.title, c.author FROM posts p, comments c WHERE p.id = c.post_id"
> [#<Post:0x36bff9c @attributes={"title"=>"Ruby Meetup", "first_name"=>"Quentin"}>, ...]
