Best practice multi language website

I am not going to attempt to refine the answers already given. Instead I will tell you about the way my own OOP PHP framework handles translations.

Internally, my framework use codes like en, fr, es, cn and so on. An array holds the languages supported by the website: array('en','fr','es','cn') The language code is passed via $_GET (lang=fr) and if not passed or not valid, it is set to the first language in the array. So at any time during program execution and from the very beginning, the current language is known.

It is useful to understand the kind of content that needs to be translated in a typical application:

1) error messages from classes (or procedural code) 2) non-error messages from classes (or procedural code) 3) page content (usually store in a database) 4) site-wide strings (like website name) 5) script-specific strings

The first type is simple to understand. Basically, we are talking about messages like "could not connect to the database ...". These messages only need to be loaded when an error occurs. My manager class receives a call from the other classes and using the information passed as parameters simply goes to relevant the class folder and retrieves the error file.

The second type of error message is more like the messages you get when the validation of a form went wrong. ("You cannot leave ... blank" or "please choose a password with more than 5 characters"). The strings need to be loaded before the class runs.I know what is

For the actual page content, I use one table per language, each table prefixed by the code for the language. So en_content is the table with English language content, es_content is for spain, cn_content for China and fr_content is the French stuff.

The fourth kind of string is relevant throughout your website. This is loaded via a configuration file named using the code for the language, that is en_lang.php, es_lang.php and so on. In the global language file you will need to load the translated languages such as array('English','Chinese', 'Spanish','French') in the English global file and array('Anglais','Chinois', 'Espagnol', 'Francais') in the French file. So when you populate a dropdown for language selection, it is in the correct language ;)

Finally you have the script-specific strings. So if you write a cooking application, it might be "Your oven was not hot enough".

In my application cycle, the global language file is loaded first. In there you will find not just global strings (like "Jack's Website") but also settings for some of the classes. Basically anything that is language or culture-dependent. Some of the strings in there include masks for dates (MMDDYYYY or DDMMYYYY), or ISO Language Codes. In the main language file, I include strings for individual classes becaue there are so few of them.

The second and last language file that is read from disk is the script language file. lang_en_home_welcome.php is the language file for the home/welcome script. A script is defined by a mode (home) and an action (welcome). Each script has its own folder with config and lang files.

The script pulls the content from the database naming the content table as explained above.

If something goes wrong, the manager knows where to get the language-dependent error file. That file is only loaded in case of an error.

So the conclusion is obvious. Think about the translation issues before you start developing an application or framework. You also need a development workflow that incorporates translations. With my framework, I develop the whole site in English and then translate all the relevant files.

Just a quick final word on the way the translation strings are implemented. My framework has a single global, the $manager, which runs services available to any other service. So for example the form service gets hold of the html service and uses it to write the html. One of the services on my system is the translator service. $translator->set($service,$code,$string) sets a string for the current language. The language file is a list of such statements. $translator->get($service,$code) retrieves a translation string. The $code can be numeric like 1 or a string like 'no_connection'. There can be no clash between services because each has its own namespace in the translator's data area.

I post this here in the hope it will save somebody the task of reinventing the wheel like I had to do a few long years ago.

Double vs. BigDecimal?

If you write down a fractional value like 1 / 7 as decimal value you get

1/7 = 0.142857142857142857142857142857142857142857...

with an infinite sequence of 142857. Since you can only write a finite number of digits you will inevitably introduce a rounding (or truncation) error.

Numbers like 1/10 or 1/100 expressed as binary numbers with a fractional part also have an infinite number of digits after the decimal point:

1/10 = binary 0.0001100110011001100110011001100110...

Doubles store values as binary and therefore might introduce an error solely by converting a decimal number to a binary number, without even doing any arithmetic.

Decimal numbers (like BigDecimal), on the other hand, store each decimal digit as is (binary coded, but each decimal on its own). This means that a decimal type is not more precise than a binary floating point or fixed point type in a general sense (i.e. it cannot store 1/7 without loss of precision), but it is more accurate for numbers that have a finite number of decimal digits as is often the case for money calculations.

Java's BigDecimal has the additional advantage that it can have an arbitrary (but finite) number of digits on both sides of the decimal point, limited only by the available memory.

Calling conventions have nothing to do with the C/C++ programming languages and are rather specifics on how a compiler implements the given language. If you consistently use the same compiler, you never need to worry about calling conventions.

However, sometimes we want binary code compiled by different compilers to inter-operate correctly. When we do so we need to define something called the Application Binary Interface (ABI). The ABI defines how the compiler converts the C/C++ source into machine-code. This will include calling conventions, name mangling, and v-table layout. cdelc and stdcall are two different calling conventions commonly used on x86 platforms.

By placing the information on the calling convention into the source header, the compiler will know what code needs to be generated to inter-operate correctly with the given executable.

How to Truncate a string in PHP to the word closest to a certain number of characters?

This is a small fix for mattmac's answer:

preg_replace('/\s+?(\S+)?$/', '', substr($string . ' ', 0, 201));

The only difference is to add a space at the end of $string. This ensures the last word isn't cut off as per ReX357's comment.

Your use-case isn't clear. However, if you are certain that you need this to be based on the DOM, and not model-data, then this is a way for one directive to have a reference to all elements with another directive specified on them.

The way is that the child directive can require the parent directive. The parent directive can expose a method that allows direct directive to register their element with the parent directive. Through this, the parent directive can access the child element(s). So if you have a template like:

Recent protocols prefer usage of RFC3339 per golang time package documentation.

In general RFC1123Z should be used instead of RFC1123 for servers that insist on that format, and RFC3339 should be preferred for new protocols. RFC822, RFC822Z, RFC1123, and RFC1123Z are useful for formatting; when used with time.Parse they do not accept all the time formats permitted by the RFCs.

regular expression for DOT

Use String.Replace() if you just want to replace the dots from string. Alternative would be to use Pattern-Matcher with StringBuilder, this gives you more flexibility as you can find groups that are between dots. If using the latter, i would recommend that you ignore empty entries with "\\.+".

Adding a column after another column within SQL

In a Firebird database the AFTER myOtherColumn does not work but you can try re-positioning the column using:

I'd give all the responses here a try first. But I wanted to just throw in what I do, just in case these do not work for you.

I've tried to solve the same problem you're having before, and in the end, what I decided on doing is to have only one JRE installed on my system at a given time. I do have about 10 different JDKs (1.3 through 1.6, and from various vendors - Sun, Oracle, IBM), since I do need it for development, but only one standalone JRE.

This has worked for me on my Windows 2000 + IE 6 computer at home, as well as my Windows XP + Multiple IE computer at work.

Is it possible to assign a base class object to a derived class reference with an explicit typecast?

Expanding on @ybo's answer - it isn't possible because the instance you have of the base class isn't actually an instance of the derived class. It only knows about the members of the base class, and doesn't know anything about those of the derived class.

The reason that you can cast an instance of the derived class to an instance of the base class is because the derived class actually already is an instance of the base class, since it has those members already. The opposite cannot be said.

How to turn a String into a JavaScript function call?

This took me a while to figure out, as the conventional window['someFunctionName']() did not work for me at first. The names of my functions were being pulled as an AJAX response from a database. Also, for whatever reason, my functions were declared outside of the scope of the window, so in order to fix this I had to rewrite the functions I was calling from

function someFunctionName() {}

to

window.someFunctionName = function() {}

and from there I could call window['someFunctionName']() with ease. I hope this helps someone!

You could also use the EPEL-repository, and then do sudo yum install python26 to install python 2.6

ERROR 1115 (42000): Unknown character set: 'utf8mb4'

Your version does not support that character set, I believe it was 5.5.3 that introduced it. You should upgrade your mysql to the version you used to export this file.

The error is then quite clear: you set a certain character set in your code, but your mysql version does not support it, and therefore does not know about it.

According to https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/charset-unicode-utf8mb4.html :

utf8mb4 is a superset of utf8

so maybe there is a chance you can just make it utf8, close your eyes and hope, but that would depend on your data, and I'd not recommend it.

For AWS users.

I had to use the following steps to get there.

1) Ensure that pip and django are installed at the sudo level

  • sudo apt-get install python-pip
  • sudo pip install django

2) Ensure that security group in-bound rules includ http on port 80 for 0.0.0.0/0

  • configured through AWS console

3) Add Public IP and DNS to ALLOWED_HOSTS

  • ALLOWED_HOSTS is a list object that you can find in settings.py
  • ALLOWED_HOSTS = ["75.254.65.19","ec2-54-528-27-21.compute-1.amazonaws.com"]

4) Launch development server with sudo on port 80

The best approach I've come up with is

  1. Use lineage to store\sort\trace trees. That's more than enough, and works thousands times faster for reading than any other approach. It also allows to stay on that pattern even if DB will change(as ANY db will allow that pattern to be used)
  2. Use function that determines lineage for specific ID.
  3. Use it as you wish (in selects, or on CUD operations, or even by jobs).

Lineage approach descr. can be found wherever, for example Here or here. As of function - that is what enspired me.

In the end - got more-or-less simple, relatively fast, and SIMPLE solution.

Specifying onClick event type with Typescript and React.Konva

As posted in my update above, a potential solution would be to use Declaration Merging as suggested by @Tyler-sebastion. I was able to define two additional interfaces and add the index property on the EventTarget in this way.

Using seq is fine, as Jiaaro suggested. Pax Diablo suggested a Bash loop to avoid calling a subprocess, with the additional advantage of being more memory friendly if $END is too large. Zathrus spotted a typical bug in the loop implementation, and also hinted that since i is a text variable, continuous conversions to-and-fro numbers are performed with an associated slow-down.

This is an improved version of the Bash loop:

ephemient taught me something: Bash allows for ((expr;expr;expr)) constructs. Since I've never read the whole man page for Bash (like I've done with the Korn shell (ksh) man page, and that was a long time ago), I missed that.

So,

seems to be the most memory-efficient way (it won't be necessary to allocate memory to consume seq's output, which could be a problem if END is very large), although probably not the “fastest”.

eschercycle noted that the {a..b} Bash notation works only with literals; true, accordingly to the Bash manual. One can overcome this obstacle with a single (internal) fork() without an exec() (as is the case with calling seq, which being another image requires a fork+exec):

Both eval and echo are Bash builtins, but a fork() is required for the command substitution (the $(…) construct).

Getters \ setters for dummies

Getters and setters really only make sense when you have private properties of classes. Since Javascript doesn't really have private class properties as you would normally think of from Object Oriented Languages, it can be hard to understand. Here is one example of a private counter object. The nice thing about this object is that the internal variable "count" cannot be accessed from outside the object.

is the canonical way to push everything to a new bare repository.

Another way to do the same thing is to create your new, non-bare repository and then make a bare clone with

I think the answer depends on which features of stored procedures you need to use.

Stored procedures returning a result set can be run using Query; stored procedures which don't return a result set can be run using Execute - in both cases (using EXEC <procname>) as the SQL command (plus input parameters as necessary). See the documentation for more details.

As of revision 2d128ccdc9a2 there doesn't appear to be native support for OUTPUT parameters; you could add this, or alternatively construct a more complex Query command which declared TSQL variables, executed the SP collecting OUTPUT parameters into the local variables and finallyreturned them in a result set:

The argument to remove() is a filter document, so passing in an empty document means 'remove all':

png has a wider color pallete than gif and gif is properitary while png is not. gif can do animations, what normal-png cannot. png-transparency is only supported by browser roughly more recent than IE6, but there is a Javascript fix for that problem. Both support alpha transparency. In general I would say that you should use png for most webgraphics while using jpeg for photos, screenshots, or similiar because png compression does not work too good on thoose.

In order to fix it I had to:

  • Add local-infile=1 to the [mysqld] and [mysql] sections of my.cnf (as explained in the comments above)
  • Use mysqli_real_connect function (PHP documentation).

The catch is that with that function you can explicitly enable the support for LOAD DATA LOCAL INFILE. For example (procedural style):

As one suggested, i went through implementation of resource bundle.. but that did not help.. as the bundle was always called under en_US locale... i tried to set my default locale to a different language and still my implementation of resource bundle control was being called with en_US... i tried to put log messages and do a step through debug and see if a different local call was being made after i change locale at run time through xhtml and JSF calls... that did not happend... then i tried to do a system set default to a utf8 for reading files by my server (tomcat server).. but that caused pronlem as all my class libraries were not compiled under utf8 and tomcat started to read then in utf8 format and server was not running properly... then i ended up with implementing a method in my java controller to be called from xhtml files.. in that method i did the following:

IIS w3svc error

In my case, IIS suddenly stoped working, and after that Windows process activation service was unable to restart.

The solution to fix this was:

  1. Find WAS service in the services tab of windows task manager
  2. In context menu choose Go to process
  3. Kill process (its name will be svchost.exe)
  4. Restart Windows process activation service

REST is somewhat of a revival of old-school HTTP, where the actual HTTP verbs (commands) have semantic meaning. Til recently, apps that wanted to update stuff on the server would supply a form containing an 'action' variable and a bunch of data. The HTTP command would almost always be GET or POST, and would be almost irrelevant. (Though there's almost always been a proscription against using GET for operations that have side effects, in reality a lot of apps don't care about the command used.)

With REST, you might instead PUT /profiles/cHao and send an XML or JSON representation of the profile info. (Or rather, I would -- you would have to update your own profile. :) That'd involve logging in, usually through HTTP's built-in authentication mechanisms.) In the latter case, what you want to do is specified by the URL, and the request body is just the guts of the resource involved.

You don't.

Firstly, your question is ambiguous - do you mean the format in which it is displayed to the user, or the format in which it is transmitted to the web server?

If you mean the format in which it is displayed to the user, then this is down to the end-user interface, not anything you specify in the HTML. Usually, I would expect it to be based on the date format that it is set in the operating system locale settings. It makes no sense to try to override it with your own preferred format, as the format it displays in is (generally speaking) the correct one for the user's locale and the format that the user is used to writing/understanding dates in.

If you mean the format in which it's transmitted to the server, you're trying to fix the wrong problem. What you need to do is program the server-side code to accept dates in yyyy-mm-dd format.

I have worked with SAP since 1998. SAP is a type of software called ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) that large companies use to manage their day to day affairs. On the macro, the software can be split into two categories: Technical and Functional

Let's go Technical first, as it answers the "What is ABAP" part of your question.

Technical

There are two technical "stacks" within the SAP software, the first is the ABAP stack which is inclusive of all the original technology that SAP was. ABAP is the proprietary coding language for SAP to develop RICEFW objects (Reports, Interfaces, Conversions, Extensions, Forms and Workflows) within the ABAP stack.

The ABAP stack is traditionally navigated via Transaction Codes (T-Codes) to take you to different screens within the SAP Environment. From a technical perspective, you will do all of your performance and tuning of the WORK PROCESSES in the SAP system here, as well as configuring all of the system RFCs, building user profiles and also doing the necessary interfacing between the OS (usually Windows or HPUX) and the Oracle Database (currently Enterprise 11g).

The JAVA stack controls the "Netweaver" aspect of SAP which encapsulates SAP's ability to be accessed via the Internet via SAP Portal and it's ability to interface with other SAP and non-SAP legacy systems via Process Integration (PI).

SAP also has extensive capabilities in the Business Intelligence Field (BI) by accessing information stored within the Business Warehouse (BW). Currently, there is a new technology called HANA 1.0 that compresses the time to run reports against these repositories.

There are two primarily technologists that run ALL of these functions, they are called SAP Basis (Netweaver) Administrators and ABAP Developers.

Functional

SAP has specific pre-populated functional packages for different business areas. For example, Exxon runs the "IS Oil & Gas" package while Bank of America runs the "Banking" package, while further still Lockheed Martin runs the "Aerospace & Defense" package. These packages were developed over time by the amalgamation of intelligent functional customizations that could be intelligently ported to the system via inclusion in dot releases.

However, there are some vanilla functional modules that almost all entities run, regardless of their specific industry:

I would like to add an answer that I do not see here. It is very related to the accepted answer, however, I did not have duplicated properties on my model, it was an issue with my Javascript.

I was doing some Ajax save where I was rebuilding the model to send back to the server. When I had first initialized the page I set my original model to a variable:

My result.Data has a property: result.Data.Items

So, some time later, I do some things and want to save, via Ajax. Part of the process is to grab an array from some side process and set it to my currentModel.Items property and send currentModel to the server.

In my Javascript, however, I did this, instead:

currentModel.items = getData();

I didn't catch it, but in Visual Studio, it will auto lower case the first letter for Javascript properties (it could be a ReSharper thing too). Then, I got the exact error posted by OP when I tried to save because currentModel now has currentModel.items AND currentModel.Items

A simple change from "items" to "Items" fixed the problem.

Reading large text files with streams in C#

You say you have been asked to show a progress bar while a large file is loading. Is that because the users genuinely want to see the exact % of file loading, or just because they want visual feedback that something is happening?

If the latter is true, then the solution becomes much simpler. Just do reader.ReadToEnd() on a background thread, and display a marquee-type progress bar instead of a proper one.

I raise this point because in my experience this is often the case. When you are writing a data processing program, then users will definitely be interested in a % complete figure, but for simple-but-slow UI updates, they are more likely to just want to know that the computer hasn't crashed. :-)

In pthread_exit, ret is an input parameter. You are simply passing the address of a variable to the function.

In pthread_join, ret is an output parameter. You get back a value from the function. Such value can, for example, be set to NULL.

Long explanation:

In pthread_join, you get back the address passed to pthread_exit by the finished thread. If you pass just a plain pointer, it is passed by value so you can't change where it is pointing to. To be able to change the value of the pointer passed to pthread_join, it must be passed as a pointer itself, that is, a pointer to a pointer.

The biggest reason for this is that the native Android scaling algorithm (as detailed by Jin35 and Padma Kumar) produces pretty crappy results. It's not going to give you Photoshop quality resizing, even downscaling (to say nothing of upscaling, which I know you're not asking about, but that's just a non-starter).

So, you should try their solution and if you're happy with the outcome, great. But if not, I'd write a function that offers a range of width that you're happy with, and looks for that dimension (or whatever's closest) in the device's available picture size array and just set it and use it.

Protect .NET code from reverse engineering?

You can't.

There are steps you can take to make it a little more difficult, but ultimately any executable on the local machine is crackable. Eventually, that code has to be converted into native machine code and every application that is runnable is vulnerable.

What you want to do is just make it difficult enough to crack to make it not worth peoples' trouble.

Some suggestions I have for you to help protect your application:

  • Obfuscate your code. Dotfuscator has a free edition and comes with Visual Studio.
  • Use public/private key or asymmetric encryption to generate your product licenses. This ensures that only you can generate your license codes. Even if your application is cracked, you can be sure that they won't be releasing a key generator for your application, because it is impossible to reverse the key generating algorithm.
  • Use a third-party packer to pack your .NET executable into an encrypted Win32 wrapper application. Themida is one of the better ones. This stops people from reflecting your application in .NET Reflector and makes it a pain to unpack for reversing.
  • Write your own custom packer. If the third-party packers are too expensive, consider writing your own. Sometimes custom packers can be very effective, because there aren't well published methods on how to unpack them. The tutorial How to write your own packer gives a ton of good information on writing your own Win32 packer.

Ultimately though, if people want your application cracked they will. Look at all the commercial software out there that has a vast amount of resources to protect their applications and yet they are cracked before the applications are even released to the public.

A skilled reverse engineer can fire up IDA-Pro and slice through your application like butter no matter what you do. A packed application can be unpacked and obfuscation only prevents it from making it a walk in the park. All your hard work with your complex license code can be undone with a single byte patch.

You just need to accept that there is a very real chance people are going to pirate your software. There are some people who are never going to pay for your application no matter what and these are the people you don't need to worry about.

There are however, many businesses out there who would never risk a lawsuit and happily buy software licenses and many computer users who either don't want to risk it, find it wrong or are not tech savvy enough to pirate. These are your true customers, and you should focus your efforts on providing them with a good user experience and ignore the people cracking your software.

I've had my application pirated before, and I took it as a personal affront. Here I was, a small-time developer, pouring my heart and soul into an application and these people had the gall to pirate from me?! They were taking money directly from my pocket!

I immediately added in a bunch of draconian DRM code and attempted to sabotage any person using an illegitimate or cracked copy. I should of course have been working on making my application better instead of trying to stop the inevitable. When not told otherwise commands take over the foreground. You only have one "foreground" process running in a single shell session. The & symbol instructs commands to run in a background process and immediately returns to the command line for additional commands.

If your command is long-running or runs indefinitely (ie: microservice) you need to pr-pend it with nohup so it remains running after you disconnect from the session:

I found that I had the same problem when I was running a project and debugging by attaching to an IIS process. I also was running in Debug mode with optimizations turned off. While I thought the code compiled fine, when I detached and tried to compile, one of the references was not found. This was due to another developer here that made modifications and changed the location of the reference. The reference did not show up with the alert symbol, so I thought everything was fine until I did the compilation. Once fixing the reference and running again it worked.

Connect to external server by using phpMyAdmin

In the config file, change the "host" variable to point to the external server. The config file is called config.inc.php and it will be in the main phpMyAdmin folder. There should be a line like this:

Just change localhost to your server's IP address.

Note: you may have to configure the external server to allow remote connections, but I've done this several times on shared hosting so it should be fine.

The listFiles method, with or without a filter does not guarantee any order.

It does, however, return an array, which you can sort with Arrays.sort().

This works because File is a comparable class, which by default sorts pathnames lexicographically. If you want to sort them differently, you can define your own comparator.

Caching a jquery ajax response in javascript/browser

Old question, but my solution is a bit different.

I was writing a single page web app that was constantly making ajax calls triggered by the user, and to make it even more difficult it required libraries that used methods other than jquery (like dojo, native xhr, etc). I wrote a plugin for one of my own libraries to cache ajax requests as efficiently as possible in a way that would work in all major browsers, regardless of which libraries were being used to make the ajax call.

The solution uses jSQL (written by me - a client-side persistent SQL implementation written in javascript which uses indexeddb and other dom storage methods), and is bundled with another library called XHRCreep (written by me) which is a complete re-write of the native XHR object.

To implement all you need to do is include the plugin in your page, which is here.

There are two options:

jSQL.xhrCache.max_time = 60;

Set the maximum age in minutes. any cached responses that are older than this are re-requested. Default is 1 hour.

jSQL.xhrCache.logging = true;

When set to true, mock XHR calls will be shown in the console for debugging.

You can clear the cache on any given page via

jSQL.tables = {}; jSQL.persist();

How to solve java.lang.NullPointerException error?

Just a shot in the dark(since you did not share the compiler initialization code with us): the way you retrieve the compiler causes the issue. Point your JRE to be inside the JDK as unlike jdk, jre does not provide any tools hence, results in NPE.

After coming back to my own question after 5 year and seeing so many people found this useful, a little update.

A string variable can be split into a list by using the split function (it can contain similar values, set is for the assignment) . I haven't found this function in the official documentation but it works similar to normal Python. The items can be called via an index, used in a loop or like Dave suggested if you know the values, it can set variables like a tuple.

Everyone of these answers has one thing in common: they all store dates as a single value (usually a string).

Another option is to take advantage of the inherent structure of JSON, and represent a date as list of numbers:

Of course, you would have to make sure both ends of the conversation agree on the format (year, month, day), and which fields are meant to be dates,... but it has the advantage of completely avoiding the issue of date-to-string conversion. It's all numbers -- no strings at all. Also, using the order: year, month, day also allows proper sorting by date.

Just thinking outside the box here -- a JSON date doesn't have to be stored as a string.

Another bonus to doing it this way is that you can easily (and efficiently) select all records for a given year or month by leveraging the way CouchDB handles queries on array values.
