Install pip in docker

Try this:

  1. Uncomment the following line in /etc/default/docker DOCKER_OPTS="--dns 8.8.8.8 --dns 8.8.4.4"
  2. Restart the Docker service sudo service docker restart
  3. Delete any images which have cached the invalid DNS settings.
  4. Build again and the problem should be solved.

HikariCP - connection is not available

I managed to fix it finally. The problem is not related to HikariCP. The problem persisted because of some complex methods in REST controllers executing multiple changes in DB through JPA repositories. For some reasons calls to these interfaces resulted in a growing number of "freezed" active connections, exhausting the pool. Either annotating these methods as @Transactional or enveloping all the logic in a single call to transactional service method seem to solve the problem.

How to secure the ASP.NET_SessionId cookie?

Found that setting the secure property in Session_Start is sufficient, as recommended in MSDN blog "Securing Session ID: ASP/ASP.NET" with some augmentation.

    protected void Session_Start(Object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        SessionStateSection sessionState =
 (SessionStateSection)ConfigurationManager.GetSection("system.web/sessionState");
        string sidCookieName = sessionState.CookieName;

        if (Request.Cookies[sidCookieName] != null)
        {
            HttpCookie sidCookie = Response.Cookies[sidCookieName];
            sidCookie.Value = Session.SessionID;
            sidCookie.HttpOnly = true;
            sidCookie.Secure = true;
            sidCookie.Path = "/";
        }
    }

How to set cursor position in EditText?

Set cursor to a row and column

You can use the following code to get the position in your EditText that corresponds to a certain row and column. You can then use editText.setSelection(getIndexFromPos(row, column)) to set the cursor position. The following calls to the method can be made:

  • getIndexFromPos(x, y) Go to the column y of line x
  • getIndexFromPos(x, -1) Go to the last column of line x
  • getIndexFromPos(-1, y) Go to the column y of last line
  • getIndexFromPos(-1, -1) Go to the last column of the last line

All line and column bounds are handled; Entering a column greater than the line's length will return position at the last column of the line. Entering a line greater than the EditText's line count will go to the last line. It should be reliable enough as it was heavily tested.

static final String LINE_SEPARATOR = System.getProperty("line.separator");

int getIndexFromPos(int line, int column) {
    int lineCount = getTrueLineCount();
    if (line < 0) line = getLayout().getLineForOffset(getSelectionStart()); // No line, take current line
    if (line >= lineCount) line = lineCount - 1; // Line out of bounds, take last line

    String content = getText().toString() + LINE_SEPARATOR;
    int currentLine = 0;
    for (int i = 0; i < content.length(); i++) {
        if (currentLine == line) {
            int lineLength = content.substring(i, content.length()).indexOf(LINE_SEPARATOR);
            if (column < 0 || column > lineLength) return i + lineLength; // No column or column out of bounds, take last column
            else return i + column;
        }
        if (String.valueOf(content.charAt(i)).equals(LINE_SEPARATOR)) currentLine++;
    }
    return -1; // Should not happen
}

// Fast alternative to StringUtils.countMatches(getText().toString(), LINE_SEPARATOR) + 1
public int getTrueLineCount() {
    int count;
    String text = getText().toString();
    StringReader sr = new StringReader(text);
    LineNumberReader lnr = new LineNumberReader(sr);
    try {
        lnr.skip(Long.MAX_VALUE);
        count = lnr.getLineNumber() + 1;
    } catch (IOException e) {
        count = 0;  // Should not happen
    }
    sr.close();
    return count;
}

The question was already answered but I thought someone could want to do that instead.

It works by looping through each character, incrementing the line count every time it finds a line separator. When the line count equals the desired line, it returns the current index + the column, or the line end index if column is out of bounds. You can also reuse the getTrueLineCount() method, it returns a line count ignoring text wrapping, unlike TextView.getLineCount().

The requested resource does not support HTTP method 'GET'

In my case, the route signature was different from the method parameter. I had id, but I was accepting documentId as parameter, that caused the problem.

[Route("Documents/{id}")] <--- caused the webapi error
[Route("Documents/{documentId}")] <-- solved
public Document Get(string documentId)
{
  ..
}

TortoiseGit-git did not exit cleanly (exit code 1)

I was heard that, one of the reasons is , the project is too large, so increasing the post buffer could solve the problem. so open the editSystemWideGitConfig, and add the following statements under [http] , postBuffer = 524288000. maybe work.

Angular Material: mat-select not selecting default

The solution for me was:

<mat-form-field>
  <mat-select #monedaSelect  formControlName="monedaDebito" [attr.disabled]="isLoading" [placeholder]="monedaLabel | async ">
  <mat-option *ngFor="let moneda of monedasList" [value]="moneda.id">{{moneda.detalle}}</mat-option>
</mat-select>

TS:

@ViewChild('monedaSelect') public monedaSelect: MatSelect;
this.genericService.getOpciones().subscribe(res => {

  this.monedasList = res;
  this.monedaSelect._onChange(res[0].id);

});

Using object: {id: number, detalle: string}

Reverse a string in Python

You can use the reversed function with a list comprehesive. But I don't understand why this method was eliminated in python 3, was unnecessarily.

Hiding table data using <div style="display:none">

Instead of using <div>, it would be better to use to provide the <tr> (which you want to hide) an id and then hiding it using javascript.

Node.js/Express routing with get params

For Query parameters like domain.com/test?format=json&type=mini format, then you can easily receive it via - req.query.

app.get('/test', function(req, res){
  var format = req.query.format,
      type = req.query.type;
});

Java ArrayList - how can I tell if two lists are equal, order not mattering?

If you don't hope to sort the collections and you need the result that ["A" "B" "C"] is not equals to ["B" "B" "A" "C"],

l1.containsAll(l2)&&l2.containsAll(l1)

is not enough, you propably need to check the size too :

    List<String> l1 =Arrays.asList("A","A","B","C");
    List<String> l2 =Arrays.asList("A","B","C");
    List<String> l3 =Arrays.asList("A","B","C");

    System.out.println(l1.containsAll(l2)&&l2.containsAll(l1));//cautions, this will be true
    System.out.println(isListEqualsWithoutOrder(l1,l2));//false as expected

    System.out.println(l3.containsAll(l2)&&l2.containsAll(l3));//true as expected
    System.out.println(isListEqualsWithoutOrder(l2,l3));//true as expected

    public static boolean isListEqualsWithoutOrder(List<String> l1, List<String> l2) {
        return l1.size()==l2.size() && l1.containsAll(l2)&&l2.containsAll(l1);
}

How to resolve TypeError: Cannot convert undefined or null to object

If you're using Laravel, my problem was in the name of my Route. Instead:

Route::put('/reason/update', 'REASONController@update');

I wrote:

Route::put('/reason/update', 'RESONController@update');

and when I fixed the controller name, the code worked!

How can I get Git to follow symlinks?

I got tired of every solution in here either being outdated or requiring root, so I made an LD_PRELOAD-based solution (Linux only).

It hooks into Git's internals, overriding the 'is this a symlink?' function, allowing symlinks to be treated as their contents. By default, all links to outside the repo are inlined; see the link for details.

How do you enable auto-complete functionality in Visual Studio C++ express edition?

Start writing, then just press CTRL+SPACE and there you go ...

Viewing all `git diffs` with vimdiff

You can try git difftool, it is designed to do this stuff.

First, you need to config diff tool to vimdiff

git config diff.tool vimdiff

Then, when you want to diff, just use git difftool instead of git diff. It will work as you expect.

Correct way to quit a Qt program?

If you're using Qt Jambi, this should work:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysql.sock' (2)

I also met this problem. mysql -u root -p Enter password: ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)

Then I find the reason is my selinux is enforcing, I disable it then restart mysqld , it works, hope helpful.

jQuery Show-Hide DIV based on Checkbox Value

That is because you are only checking the current checkbox.

Change it to

function checkUncheck() {
    $('.pChk').click(function() {
        if ( $('.pChk:checked').length > 0) {
            $("#ProjectListButton").show();
        } else {
            $("#ProjectListButton").hide();
        }
    });
}

to check if any of the checkboxes is checked (lots of checks in this line..).

Go to Matching Brace in Visual Studio?

I use Visual Studio 2008, and you can customize what you want this shortcut to be.

Click menu Tools -> Options -> Environment -> Keyboard. Then look for Edit.GotoBrace.

This will tell you what key combination is currently assigned for this. I think you can change this if you want, but it's useful if the Ctrl + ] doesn't work.

How to use a jQuery plugin inside Vue

Option #1: Use ProvidePlugin

Add the ProvidePlugin to the plugins array in both build/webpack.dev.conf.js and build/webpack.prod.conf.js so that jQuery becomes globally available to all your modules:

plugins: [

  // ...

  new webpack.ProvidePlugin({
    $: 'jquery',
    jquery: 'jquery',
    'window.jQuery': 'jquery',
    jQuery: 'jquery'
  })
]

Option #2: Use Expose Loader module for webpack

As @TremendusApps suggests in his answer, add the Expose Loader package:

npm install expose-loader --save-dev

Use in your entry point main.js like this:

import 'expose?$!expose?jQuery!jquery'

// ...

When does a cookie with expiration time 'At end of session' expire?

Cookies that 'expire at end of the session' expire unpredictably from the user's perspective!

On iOS with Safari they expire whenever you switch apps!

On Android with Chrome they don't expire when you close the browser.

On Windows desktop running Chrome they expire when you close the browser. That's not when you close your website's tab; its when you close all tabs. Nor do they expire if there are any other browser windows open. If users run web apps as windows they might not even know they are browser windows. So your cookie's life depends on what the user is doing with some apparently unrelated app.

Delete a single record from Entity Framework?

Using EntityFramework.Plus could be an option:

dbContext.Employ.Where(e => e.Id == 1).Delete();

How do I delete rows in a data frame?

Create id column in your data frame or use any column name to identify the row. Using index is not fair to delete.

Use subset function to create new frame.

updated_myData <- subset(myData, id!= 6)
print (updated_myData)

updated_myData <- subset(myData, id %in% c(1, 3, 5, 7))
print (updated_myData)

How can I add an item to a ListBox in C# and WinForms?

ListBoxItem is a WPF class, NOT a WinForms class.

For WPF, use ListBoxItem.

For WinForms, the item is a Object type, so use one of these:
1. Provide your own ToString() method for the Object type.
2. Use databinding with DisplayMemeber and ValueMember (see Kelsey's answer)

Threading Example in Android

Here is a simple threading example for Android. It's very basic but it should help you to get a perspective.

Android code - Main.java

package test12.tt;

import android.app.Activity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.TextView;

public class Test12Activity extends Activity {

    public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.main);
        final TextView txt1 = (TextView) findViewById(R.id.sm);

        new Thread(new Runnable() {
            public void run(){
            txt1.setText("Thread!!");
            }
        }).start();

    }
}

Android application xml - main.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="fill_parent">

    <TextView
    android:id = "@+id/sm"
    android:layout_width="fill_parent"
    android:layout_height="wrap_content"
    android:text="@string/hello"/>

</LinearLayout>

Get all directories within directory nodejs

use fs?path module can got the folder. this use Promise. If your will get the fill, your can change isDirectory() to isFile() Nodejs--fs--fs.Stats.At last, you can get the file'name file'extname and so on Nodejs---Path

var fs = require("fs"),
path = require("path");
//your <MyFolder> path
var p = "MyFolder"
fs.readdir(p, function (err, files) {
    if (err) {
        throw err;
    }
    //this can get all folder and file under <MyFolder>
    files.map(function (file) {
        //return file or folder path, such as **MyFolder/SomeFile.txt**
        return path.join(p, file);
    }).filter(function (file) {
        //use sync judge method. The file will add next files array if the file is directory, or not.
        return fs.statSync(file).isDirectory();
    }).forEach(function (files) {
        //The files is array, so each. files is the folder name. can handle the folder.
        console.log("%s", files);
    });
});

Why is JavaFX is not included in OpenJDK 8 on Ubuntu Wily (15.10)?

I use ubuntu 16.04 and because I already had openJDK installed, this command have solved the problem. Don't forget that JavaFX is part of OpenJDK.

sudo apt-get install openjfx

Spring Data JPA findOne() change to Optional how to use this?

Indeed, in the latest version of Spring Data, findOne returns an optional. If you want to retrieve the object from the Optional, you can simply use get() on the Optional. First of all though, a repository should return the optional to a service, which then handles the case in which the optional is empty. afterwards, the service should return the object to the controller.

How to open a second activity on click of button in android app

just follow this step (i am not writing code just Bcoz you may do copy and paste and cant learn)..

  1. first at all you need to declare a button which you have in layout

  2. Give reference to that button by finding its id (using findviewById) in oncreate

  3. setlistener for button (like setonclick listener)

  4. last handle the click event (means start new activity by using intent as you know already)

  5. Dont forget to add activity in manifest file

BTW this is just simple i would like to suggest you that just start from simple tutorials available on net will be better for you..

Best luck for Android

Total Number of Row Resultset getRow Method

BalusC's answer is right! but I have to mention according to the user instance variable such as:

rSet.last();
total = rSet.getRow();

and then which you are missing

rSet.beforeFirst();

the remaining code is same you will get your desire result.

Best way to combine two or more byte arrays in C#

Many of the answers seem to me to be ignoring the stated requirements:

  • The result should be a byte array
  • It should be as efficient as possible

These two together rule out a LINQ sequence of bytes - anything with yield is going to make it impossible to get the final size without iterating through the whole sequence.

If those aren't the real requirements of course, LINQ could be a perfectly good solution (or the IList<T> implementation). However, I'll assume that Superdumbell knows what he wants.

(EDIT: I've just had another thought. There's a big semantic difference between making a copy of the arrays and reading them lazily. Consider what happens if you change the data in one of the "source" arrays after calling the Combine (or whatever) method but before using the result - with lazy evaluation, that change will be visible. With an immediate copy, it won't. Different situations will call for different behaviour - just something to be aware of.)

Here are my proposed methods - which are very similar to those contained in some of the other answers, certainly :)

public static byte[] Combine(byte[] first, byte[] second)
{
    byte[] ret = new byte[first.Length + second.Length];
    Buffer.BlockCopy(first, 0, ret, 0, first.Length);
    Buffer.BlockCopy(second, 0, ret, first.Length, second.Length);
    return ret;
}

public static byte[] Combine(byte[] first, byte[] second, byte[] third)
{
    byte[] ret = new byte[first.Length + second.Length + third.Length];
    Buffer.BlockCopy(first, 0, ret, 0, first.Length);
    Buffer.BlockCopy(second, 0, ret, first.Length, second.Length);
    Buffer.BlockCopy(third, 0, ret, first.Length + second.Length,
                     third.Length);
    return ret;
}

public static byte[] Combine(params byte[][] arrays)
{
    byte[] ret = new byte[arrays.Sum(x => x.Length)];
    int offset = 0;
    foreach (byte[] data in arrays)
    {
        Buffer.BlockCopy(data, 0, ret, offset, data.Length);
        offset += data.Length;
    }
    return ret;
}

Of course the "params" version requires creating an array of the byte arrays first, which introduces extra inefficiency.

How to empty the content of a div

If by saying without destroying it, you mean to a keep a reference to the children, you can do:

var oldChildren = [];

while(element.hasChildNodes()) {
    oldChildren.push(element.removeChild(element.firstChild));
}

Regarding the original tagging (html css) of your question:

You cannot remove content with CSS. You could only hide it. E.g. you can hide all children of a certain node with:

#someID > * {
    display: none;
}

This doesn't work in IE6 though (but you could use #someID *).

Using Java 8's Optional with Stream::flatMap

Late to the party, but what about

things.stream()
    .map(this::resolve)
    .filter(Optional::isPresent)
    .findFirst().get();

You can get rid of the last get() if you create a util method to convert optional to stream manually:

things.stream()
    .map(this::resolve)
    .flatMap(Util::optionalToStream)
    .findFirst();

If you return stream right away from your resolve function, you save one more line.

Javascript + Regex = Nothing to repeat error?

Firstly, in a character class [...] most characters don't need escaping - they are just literals.

So, your regex should be:

"[\[\]?*+|{}\\()@.\n\r]"

This compiles for me.

To show only file name without the entire directory path

No need for Xargs and all , ls is more than enough.

ls -1 *.txt

displays row wise

How do I get the "id" after INSERT into MySQL database with Python?

This might be just a requirement of PyMySql in Python, but I found that I had to name the exact table that I wanted the ID for:

In:

cnx = pymysql.connect(host='host',
                            database='db',
                            user='user',
                            password='pass')
cursor = cnx.cursor()
update_batch = """insert into batch set type = "%s" , records = %i, started = NOW(); """
second_query = (update_batch % ( "Batch 1", 22  ))
cursor.execute(second_query)
cnx.commit()
batch_id = cursor.execute('select last_insert_id() from batch')
cursor.close()

batch_id

Out: 5
... or whatever the correct Batch_ID value actually is

Using quotation marks inside quotation marks

Python accepts both " and ' as quote marks, so you could do this as:

>>> print '"A word that needs quotation marks"'
"A word that needs quotation marks"

Alternatively, just escape the inner "s

>>> print "\"A word that needs quotation marks\""
"A word that needs quotation marks"

jQuery Date Picker - disable past dates

just replace your code:

old code:

$("#dateSelect").datepicker({
    showOtherMonths: true,
    selectOtherMonths: true,
    changeMonth: true,
    changeYear: true,
    showButtonPanel: true,
    dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd'

});

new code:

$("#dateSelect").datepicker({
    showOtherMonths: true,
    selectOtherMonths: true,
    changeMonth: true,
    changeYear: true,
    showButtonPanel: true,
    dateFormat: 'yy-mm-dd',
    minDate: 0
});

If "0" then leave the cell blank

Use this

=IFERROR((H15+G16-F16)^2/(H15+G16-F16),"")

Executing a command stored in a variable from PowerShell

Here is yet another way without Invoke-Expression but with two variables (command:string and parameters:array). It works fine for me. Assume 7z.exe is in the system path.

$cmd = '7z.exe'
$prm = 'a', '-tzip', 'c:\temp\with space\test1.zip', 'C:\TEMP\with space\changelog'

& $cmd $prm

If the command is known (7z.exe) and only parameters are variable then this will do

$prm = 'a', '-tzip', 'c:\temp\with space\test1.zip', 'C:\TEMP\with space\changelog'

& 7z.exe $prm

BTW, Invoke-Expression with one parameter works for me, too, e.g. this works

$cmd = '& 7z.exe a -tzip "c:\temp\with space\test2.zip" "C:\TEMP\with space\changelog"'

Invoke-Expression $cmd

P.S. I usually prefer the way with a parameter array because it is easier to compose programmatically than to build an expression for Invoke-Expression.

Do you have to include <link rel="icon" href="favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />?

Simply adding it to the root folder works after a fashion, but I've found that if I need to change the favicon, it can take days to update... even a cache refresh doesn't do the trick.

C# 'or' operator?

Also worth mentioning, in C# the OR operator is short-circuiting. In your example, Close seems to be a property, but if it were a method, it's worth noting that:

if (ActionsLogWriter.Close() || ErrorDumpWriter.Close())

is fundamentally different from

if (ErrorDumpWriter.Close() || ActionsLogWriter.Close())

In C#, if the first expression returns true, the second expression will not be evaluated at all. Just be aware of this. It actually works to your advantage most of the time.

How to turn on line numbers in IDLE?

There's a set of useful extensions to IDLE called IDLEX that works with MacOS and Windows http://idlex.sourceforge.net/

It includes line numbering and I find it quite handy & free.

Otherwise there are a bunch of other IDEs some of which are free: https://wiki.python.org/moin/IntegratedDevelopmentEnvironments

I do not understand how execlp() works in Linux

this prototype:

  int execlp(const char *file, const char *arg, ...);

Says that execlp ìs a variable argument function. It takes 2 const char *. The rest of the arguments, if any, are the additional arguments to hand over to program we want to run - also char * - all these are C strings (and the last argument must be a NULL pointer)

So, the file argument is the path name of an executable file to be executed. arg is the string we want to appear as argv[0] in the executable. By convention, argv[0] is just the file name of the executable, normally it's set to the same as file.

The ... are now the additional arguments to give to the executable.

Say you run this from a commandline/shell:

$ ls

That'd be execlp("ls", "ls", (char *)NULL); Or if you run

$ ls -l /

That'd be execlp("ls", "ls", "-l", "/", (char *)NULL);

So on to execlp("/bin/sh", ..., "ls -l /bin/??", ...);

Here you are going to the shell, /bin/sh , and you're giving the shell a command to execute. That command is "ls -l /bin/??". You can run that manually from a commandline/shell:

 $ ls -l /bin/??

Now, how do you run a shell and tell it to execute a command ? You open up the documentation/man page for your shell and read it.

What you want to run is:

$ /bin/sh -c "ls -l /bin/??"

This becomes

  execlp("/bin/sh","/bin/sh", "-c", "ls -l /bin/??", (char *)NULL);

Side note: The /bin/?? is doing pattern matching, this pattern matching is done by the shell, and it expands to all files under /bin/ with 2 characters. If you simply did

  execlp("ls","ls", "-l", "/bin/??", (char *)NULL);

Probably nothing would happen (unless there's a file actually named /bin/??) as there's no shell that interprets and expands /bin/??

How can I get terminal output in python?

The easiest way is to use the library commands

ASP.NET MVC - Attaching an entity of type 'MODELNAME' failed because another entity of the same type already has the same primary key value

i mange to fix the issue by updating state. when you trigger find or any other query operation on the same record sate has been updated with modified so we need to set status to Detached then you can fire your update change

     ActivityEntity activity = new ActivityEntity();
      activity.name="vv";
    activity.ID = 22 ; //sample id
   var savedActivity = context.Activities.Find(22);

                activity.age= savedActivity.age;
                activity.marks= savedActivity.marks;

Can we use JSch for SSH key-based communication?

It is possible. Have a look at JSch.addIdentity(...)

This allows you to use key either as byte array or to read it from file.

import com.jcraft.jsch.Channel;
import com.jcraft.jsch.ChannelSftp;
import com.jcraft.jsch.JSch;

            jsch.addIdentity(privateKey);
            System.out.println("identity added ");

            Session session = jsch.getSession(user, host, port);
            System.out.println("session created.");

Interface vs Abstract Class (general OO)

There are a couple of other differences -

Interfaces can't have any concrete implementations. Abstract base classes can. This allows you to provide concrete implementations there. This can allow an abstract base class to actually provide a more rigorous contract, wheras an interface really only describes how a class is used. (The abstract base class can have non-virtual members defining the behavior, which gives more control to the base class author.)

More than one interface can be implemented on a class. A class can only derive from a single abstract base class. This allows for polymorphic hierarchy using interfaces, but not abstract base classes. This also allows for a pseudo-multi-inheritance using interfaces.

Abstract base classes can be modified in v2+ without breaking the API. Changes to interfaces are breaking changes.

[C#/.NET Specific] Interfaces, unlike abstract base classes, can be applied to value types (structs). Structs cannot inherit from abstract base classes. This allows behavioral contracts/usage guidelines to be applied on value types.

How to output numbers with leading zeros in JavaScript?

You could extend the Number object:

Number.prototype.pad = function(size) {
    var s = String(this);
    while (s.length < (size || 2)) {s = "0" + s;}
    return s;
}

Examples:

(9).pad();  //returns "09"

(7).pad(3);  //returns "007"

Better than all above is ever to use Standard C specification for struct initialization:

Can I change the height of an image in CSS :before/:after pseudo-elements?

Adjusting the background-size is permitted. You still need to specify width and height of the block, however.

.pdflink:after {
    background-image: url('/images/pdf.png');
    background-size: 10px 20px;
    display: inline-block;
    width: 10px;
    height: 20px;
    content:"";
}

How to delete Tkinter widgets from a window?

You say that you have a list of widgets to change dynamically. Do you want to reuse and reconfigure existing widgets, or create all new widgets and delete the old ones? It affects the answer.

If you want to reuse the existing widgets, just reconfigure them. Or, if you just want to hide some of them temporarily, use the corresponding "forget" method to hide them. If you mapped them with pack() calls, you would hide with pack_forget() (or just forget()) calls. Accordingly, grid_forget() to hide gridded widgets, and place_forget() for placed widgets.

If you do not intend to reuse the widgets, you can destroy them with a straight destroy() call, like widget.destroy(), to free up resources.

Java, How to get number of messages in a topic in apache kafka

Apache Kafka command to get un handled messages on all partitions of a topic:

kafka-run-class kafka.tools.ConsumerOffsetChecker
    --topic test --zookeeper localhost:2181
    --group test_group

Prints:

Group Topic Pid Offset logSize Lag Owner
test_group test         0   11051           11053           2               none
test_group test         1   10810           10812           2               none
test_group test         2   11027           11028           1               none

Column 6 is the un-handled messages. Add them up like this:

kafka-run-class kafka.tools.ConsumerOffsetChecker
    --topic test --zookeeper localhost:2181
    --group test_group 2>/dev/null | awk 'NR>1 {sum += $6}
    END {print sum}'

awk reads the rows, skips the header line and adds up the 6th column and at the end prints the sum.

Prints

5

What characters are valid in a URL?

All the gory details can be found in the current RFC on the topic: RFC 3986 (Uniform Resource Identifier (URI): Generic Syntax)

Based on this related answer, you are looking at a list that looks like: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, -, ., _, ~, :, /, ?, #, [, ], @, !, $, &, ', (, ), *, +, ,, ;, %, and =. Everything else must be url-encoded. Also, some of these characters can only exist in very specific spots in a URI and outside of those spots must be url-encoded (e.g. % can only be used in conjunction with url encoding as in %20), the RFC has all of these specifics.

What does hash do in python?

TL;DR:

Please refer to the glossary: hash() is used as a shortcut to comparing objects, an object is deemed hashable if it can be compared to other objects. that is why we use hash(). It's also used to access dict and set elements which are implemented as resizable hash tables in CPython.

Technical considerations

  • usually comparing objects (which may involve several levels of recursion) is expensive.
  • preferably, the hash() function is an order of magnitude (or several) less expensive.
  • comparing two hashes is easier than comparing two objects, this is where the shortcut is.

If you read about how dictionaries are implemented, they use hash tables, which means deriving a key from an object is a corner stone for retrieving objects in dictionaries in O(1). That's however very dependent on your hash function to be collision-resistant. The worst case for getting an item in a dictionary is actually O(n).

On that note, mutable objects are usually not hashable. The hashable property means you can use an object as a key. If the hash value is used as a key and the contents of that same object change, then what should the hash function return? Is it the same key or a different one? It depends on how you define your hash function.

Learning by example:

Imagine we have this class:

>>> class Person(object):
... def __init__(self, name, ssn, address):
...         self.name = name
...         self.ssn = ssn
...         self.address = address
...     def __hash__(self):
...         return hash(self.ssn)
...     def __eq__(self, other):
...         return self.ssn == other.ssn
...

Please note: this is all based on the assumption that the SSN never changes for an individual (don't even know where to actually verify that fact from authoritative source).

And we have Bob:

>>> bob = Person('bob', '1111-222-333', None)

Bob goes to see a judge to change his name:

>>> jim = Person('jim bo', '1111-222-333', 'sf bay area')

This is what we know:

>>> bob == jim
True

But these are two different objects with different memory allocated, just like two different records of the same person:

>>> bob is jim
False

Now comes the part where hash() is handy:

>>> dmv_appointments = {}
>>> dmv_appointments[bob] = 'tomorrow'

Guess what:

>>> dmv_appointments[jim] #?
'tomorrow'

From two different records you are able to access the same information. Now try this:

>>> dmv_appointments[hash(jim)]
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
  File "<stdin>", line 9, in __eq__
AttributeError: 'int' object has no attribute 'ssn'
>>> hash(jim) == hash(hash(jim))
True

What just happened? That's a collision. Because hash(jim) == hash(hash(jim)) which are both integers btw, we need to compare the input of __getitem__ with all items that collide. The builtin int does not have an ssn attribute so it trips.

>>> del Person.__eq__
>>> dmv_appointments[bob]
'tomorrow'
>>> dmv_appointments[jim]
Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "<stdin>", line 1, in <module>
KeyError: <__main__.Person object at 0x7f611bd37110>

In this last example, I show that even with a collision, the comparison is performed, the objects are no longer equal, which means it successfully raises a KeyError.

How to do something to each file in a directory with a batch script

Easiest method:

From Command Line, use:

for %f in (*.*) do echo %f

From a Batch File (double up the % percent signs):

for %%f in (*.*) do echo %%f

From a Batch File with folder specified as 1st parameter:

for %%f in (%1\*.*) do echo %%f

Selecting one row from MySQL using mysql_* API

Functions mysql_ are not supported any longer and have been removed in PHP 7. You must use mysqli_ instead. However it's not recommended method now. You should consider PDO with better security solutions.

$row = mysqli_fetch_assoc($result);
echo $row['option_value'];

What is the max size of VARCHAR2 in PL/SQL and SQL?

Not sure what you meant with "Can I increase the size of this variable without worrying about the SQL limit?". As long you do not try to insert a more than 4000 VARCHAR2 into a VARCHAR2 SQL column there is nothing to worry about.

Float to String format specifier

In C#, float is an alias for System.Single (a bit like intis an alias for System.Int32).

What's the difference between the atomic and nonatomic attributes?

The default is atomic, this means it does cost you performance whenever you use the property, but it is thread safe. What Objective-C does, is set a lock, so only the actual thread may access the variable, as long as the setter/getter is executed.

Example with MRC of a property with an ivar _internal:

[_internal lock]; //lock
id result = [[value retain] autorelease];
[_internal unlock];
return result;

So these last two are the same:

@property(atomic, retain) UITextField *userName;

@property(retain) UITextField *userName; // defaults to atomic

On the other hand does nonatomic add nothing to your code. So it is only thread safe if you code security mechanism yourself.

@property(nonatomic, retain) UITextField *userName;

The keywords doesn't have to be written as first property attribute at all.

Don't forget, this doesn't mean that the property as a whole is thread-safe. Only the method call of the setter/getter is. But if you use a setter and after that a getter at the same time with 2 different threads, it could be broken too!

Linq style "For Each"

The official MS line is "because it's not a functional operation" (ie it's a stateful operation).

Couldn't you do something like:

list.Select( x => x+1 )

or if you really need it in a List:

var someValues = new List<int>( list.Select( x => x+1 ) );

How do I add a new column to a Spark DataFrame (using PySpark)?

You can define a new udf when adding a column_name:

u_f = F.udf(lambda :yourstring,StringType())
a.select(u_f().alias('column_name')

Error message "unreported exception java.io.IOException; must be caught or declared to be thrown"

Exceptions bubble up the stack. If a caller calls a method that throws a checked exception, like IOException, it must also either catch the exception, or itself throw it.

In the case of the first block:

filecontent()
{
    setGUI();
    setRegister();
    showfile();
    setTitle("FileData");
    setVisible(true);
    setSize(300, 300);

    /*
        addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter()
        {
            public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we)
            {
                System.exit(0);
            }
        });
    */
}

You would have to include a try catch block:

filecontent()
{
    setGUI();
    setRegister();
    try {
        showfile();
    }
    catch (IOException e) {
        // Do something here
    }
    setTitle("FileData");
    setVisible(true);
    setSize(300, 300);

    /*
        addWindowListener(new WindowAdapter()
        {
            public void windowClosing(WindowEvent we)
            {
                System.exit(0);
            }
        });
    */
}

In the case of the second:

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae)
{
    if (ae.getSource() == submit)
    {
        showfile();
    }
}

You cannot throw IOException from this method as its signature is determined by the interface, so you must catch the exception within:

public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent ae)
{
    if(ae.getSource()==submit)
    {
        try {
            showfile();
        }
        catch (IOException e) {
            // Do something here
        }
    }
}

Remember, the showFile() method is throwing the exception; that's what the "throws" keyword indicates that the method may throw that exception. If the showFile() method is throwing, then whatever code calls that method must catch, or themselves throw the exception explicitly by including the same throws IOException addition to the method signature, if it's permitted.

If the method is overriding a method signature defined in an interface or superclass that does not also declare that the method may throw that exception, you cannot declare it to throw an exception.

Ng-model does not update controller value

I just had this very issue using a root_controller bound to the body-element. Then I was using ng-view with the angular router. The problem is that angular ALWAYS creates a new scope when it inserts the html into ng-view element. As a consequence, my "check" function was defined on the parent scope of the scope that was modified by my ng-model element.

To solve the problem, just use a dedicated controller within route-loaded html content.

Can I do Model->where('id', ARRAY) multiple where conditions?

You could use one of the below solutions:

$items = Item::whereIn('id', [1,2,..])->get();

or:

$items = DB::table('items')->whereIn('id',[1,2,..])->get();

CSS3 equivalent to jQuery slideUp and slideDown?

So I've gone ahead and answered my own question :)

@True's answer regarded transforming an element to a specific height. The problem with this is I don't know the height of the element (it can fluctuate).

I found other solutions around which used max-height as the transition but this produced a very jerky animation for me.

My solution below works only in WebKit browsers.

Although not purely CSS, it involves transitioning the height, which is determined by some JS.

Doctrine findBy 'does not equal'

Based on the answer from Luis, you can do something more like the default findBy method.

First, create a default repository class that is going to be used by all your entities.

/* $config is the entity manager configuration object. */
$config->setDefaultRepositoryClassName( 'MyCompany\Repository' );

Or you can edit this in config.yml

doctrine: orm: default_repository_class: MyCompany\Repository

Then:

<?php

namespace MyCompany;

use Doctrine\ORM\EntityRepository;

class Repository extends EntityRepository {

    public function findByNot( array $criteria, array $orderBy = null, $limit = null, $offset = null )
    {
        $qb = $this->getEntityManager()->createQueryBuilder();
        $expr = $this->getEntityManager()->getExpressionBuilder();

        $qb->select( 'entity' )
            ->from( $this->getEntityName(), 'entity' );

        foreach ( $criteria as $field => $value ) {
            // IF INTEGER neq, IF NOT notLike
            if($this->getEntityManager()->getClassMetadata($this->getEntityName())->getFieldMapping($field)["type"]=="integer") {
                $qb->andWhere( $expr->neq( 'entity.' . $field, $value ) );
            } else {
                $qb->andWhere( $expr->notLike( 'entity.' . $field, $qb->expr()->literal($value) ) );
            }
        }

        if ( $orderBy ) {

            foreach ( $orderBy as $field => $order ) {

                $qb->addOrderBy( 'entity.' . $field, $order );
            }
        }

        if ( $limit )
            $qb->setMaxResults( $limit );

        if ( $offset )
            $qb->setFirstResult( $offset );

        return $qb->getQuery()
            ->getResult();
    }

}

The usage is the same than the findBy method, example:

$entityManager->getRepository( 'MyRepo' )->findByNot(
    array( 'status' => Status::STATUS_DISABLED )
);

How can I render Partial views in asp.net mvc 3?

<%= Html.Partial("PartialName", Model) %>

How to prevent scanf causing a buffer overflow in C?

Most of the time a combination of fgets and sscanf does the job. The other thing would be to write your own parser, if the input is well formatted. Also note your second example needs a bit of modification to be used safely:

#define LENGTH          42
#define str(x)          # x
#define xstr(x)         str(x)

/* ... */
int nc = scanf("%"xstr(LENGTH)"[^\n]%*[^\n]", array);

The above discards the input stream upto but not including the newline (\n) character. You will need to add a getchar() to consume this. Also do check if you reached the end-of-stream:

if (!feof(stdin)) { ...

and that's about it.

Simple UDP example to send and receive data from same socket

I'll try to keep this short, I've done this a few months ago for a game I was trying to build, it does a UDP "Client-Server" connection that acts like TCP, you can send (message) (message + object) using this. I've done some testing with it and it works just fine, feel free to modify it if needed.

How to work on UAC when installing XAMPP

Basically there's three things you can do

  1. Ensure that your user account has administrator privilege.
  2. Disable User Account Control (UAC).
  3. Install in C://xampp.

I've just writen an answer to a very similar answer here where I explain how you can disable UAC since Windows 8.

Sending a mail from a linux shell script

Generally, you'd want to use mail command to send your message using local MTA (that will either deliver it using SMTP to the destination or just forward it into some more powerful SMTP server, for example, at your ISP). If you don't have a local MTA (although it's a bit unusual for a UNIX-like system to omit one), you can either use some minimalistic MTA like ssmtp.

ssmtp is quite easy to configure. Basically, you'll just need to specify where your provider's SMTP server is:

# The place where the mail goes. The actual machine name is required
# no MX records are consulted. Commonly mailhosts are named mail.domain.com
# The example will fit if you are in domain.com and you mailhub is so named.
mailhub=mail

Another option is to use one of myriads scripts that just connect to SMTP server directly and try to post a message there, such as Smtp-Auth-Email-Script, smtp-cli, SendEmail, etc.

What's the best way to iterate an Android Cursor?

I'd just like to point out a third alternative which also works if the cursor is not at the start position:

if (cursor.moveToFirst()) {
    do {
        // do what you need with the cursor here
    } while (cursor.moveToNext());
}

Getting the base url of the website and globally passing it to twig in Symfony 2

Instead of passing variable to template globally, you can define a base template and render the 'global part' in it. The base template can be inherited.

Example of rendering template From the symfony Documentation:

<div id="sidebar">
  {% render "AcmeArticleBundle:Article:recentArticles" with {'max': 3} %}
</div>

How to get the clicked link's href with jquery?

Suppose we have three anchor tags like ,

<a  href="ID=1" class="testClick">Test1.</a>
<br />
<a  href="ID=2" class="testClick">Test2.</a>
<br />
<a  href="ID=3" class="testClick">Test3.</a>

now in script

$(".testClick").click(function () {
        var anchorValue= $(this).attr("href");
        alert(anchorValue);
});

use this keyword instead of className (testClick)

Cannot deserialize the JSON array (e.g. [1,2,3]) into type ' ' because type requires JSON object (e.g. {"name":"value"}) to deserialize correctly

Your json string is wrapped within square brackets ([]), hence it is interpreted as array instead of single RetrieveMultipleResponse object. Therefore, you need to deserialize it to type collection of RetrieveMultipleResponse, for example :

var objResponse1 =
    JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<List<RetrieveMultipleResponse>>(JsonStr);

How to define a variable in a Dockerfile?

To my knowledge, only ENV allows that, as mentioned in "Environment replacement"

Environment variables (declared with the ENV statement) can also be used in certain instructions as variables to be interpreted by the Dockerfile.

They have to be environment variables in order to be redeclared in each new containers created for each line of the Dockerfile by docker build.

In other words, those variables aren't interpreted directly in a Dockerfile, but in a container created for a Dockerfile line, hence the use of environment variable.

This day, I use both ARG (docker 1.10+, and docker build --build-arg var=value) and ENV.
Using ARG alone means your variable is visible at build time, not at runtime.

My Dockerfile usually has:

ARG var
ENV var=${var}

In your case, ARG is enough: I use it typically for setting http_proxy variable, that docker build needs for accessing internet at build time.

Get MD5 hash of big files in Python

I don't like loops. Based on @Nathan Feger:

md5 = hashlib.md5()
with open(filename, 'rb') as f:
    functools.reduce(lambda _, c: md5.update(c), iter(lambda: f.read(md5.block_size * 128), b''), None)
md5.hexdigest()

NameError: name 'reduce' is not defined in Python

In this case I believe that the following is equivalent:

l = sum([1,2,3,4]) % 2

The only problem with this is that it creates big numbers, but maybe that is better than repeated modulo operations?

How to include files outside of Docker's build context?

If you read the discussion in the issue 2745 not only docker may never support symlinks they may never support adding files outside your context. Seems to be a design philosophy that files that go into docker build should explicitly be part of its context or be from a URL where it is presumably deployed too with a fixed version so that the build is repeatable with well known URLs or files shipped with the docker container.

I prefer to build from a version controlled source - ie docker build -t stuff http://my.git.org/repo - otherwise I'm building from some random place with random files.

fundamentally, no.... -- SvenDowideit, Docker Inc

Just my opinion but I think you should restructure to separate out the code and docker repositories. That way the containers can be generic and pull in any version of the code at run time rather than build time.

Alternatively, use docker as your fundamental code deployment artifact and then you put the dockerfile in the root of the code repository. if you go this route probably makes sense to have a parent docker container for more general system level details and a child container for setup specific to your code.

How to add a fragment to a programmatically generated layout?

Below is a working code to add a fragment e.g 3 times to a vertical LinearLayout (xNumberLinear). You can change number 3 with any other number or take a number from a spinner!

for (int i = 0; i < 3; i++) {
            LinearLayout linearDummy = new LinearLayout(getActivity());
            linearDummy.setOrientation(LinearLayout.VERTICAL);
            if (Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < Build.VERSION_CODES.JELLY_BEAN_MR1) {

                Toast.makeText(getActivity(), "This function works on newer versions of android", Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show();

            } else {
                linearDummy.setId(View.generateViewId());
            }
            fragmentManager.beginTransaction().add(linearDummy.getId(), new SomeFragment(),"someTag1").commit();

            xNumberLinear.addView(linearDummy);
        }

What's an object file in C?

Object files are codes that are dependent on functions, symbols, and text to run the program. Just like old telex machines, which required teletyping to send signals to other telex machine.

In the same way processor's require binary code to run, object files are like binary code but not linked. Linking creates additional files so that the user does not have to have compile the C language themselves. Users can directly open the exe file once the object file is linked with some compiler like c language , or vb etc.

receiving json and deserializing as List of object at spring mvc controller

I believe this will solve the issue

var z = '[{"name":"1","age":"2"},{"name":"1","age":"3"}]';
z = JSON.stringify(JSON.parse(z));
$.ajax({
    url: "/setTest",
    data: z,
    type: "POST",
    dataType:"json",
    contentType:'application/json'
});

How do I display Ruby on Rails form validation error messages one at a time?

I resolved it like this:

<% @user.errors.each do |attr, msg| %>
  <li>
    <%= @user.errors.full_messages_for(attr).first if @user.errors[attr].first == msg %>
  </li>
<% end %>

This way you are using the locales for the error messages.

fail to change placeholder color with Bootstrap 3

I think qwertzman is on the right track for the best solution to this.

If you only wanted to style a specific placeholder, then his answer still holds true.

But if you want to override the colour of all placeholders, (which is more probable) and if you are already compiling your own custom Bootstrap LESS, the answer is even simpler!

Override this LESS variable: @input-color-placeholder

Shorthand if/else statement Javascript

What does "all" stand for in a makefile?

The manual for GNU Make gives a clear definition for all in its list of standard targets.

If the author of the Makefile is following that convention then the target all should:

  1. Compile the entire program, but not build documentation.
  2. Be the the default target. As in running just make should do the same as make all.

To achieve 1 all is typically defined as a .PHONY target that depends on the executable(s) that form the entire program:

.PHONY : all
all : executable

To achieve 2 all should either be the first target defined in the make file or be assigned as the default goal:

.DEFAULT_GOAL := all

how to set cursor style to pointer for links without hrefs

Use CSS cursor: pointer if I remember correctly.

Either in your CSS file:

.link_cursor
{
    cursor: pointer;
}

Then just add the following HTML to any elements you want to have the link cursor: class="link_cursor" (the preferred method.)

Or use inline CSS:

<a style="cursor: pointer;">

Subtract days, months, years from a date in JavaScript

This does not answer the question fully, but for anyone who is able to calculate the number of days by which they would like to offset an initial date then the following method will work:

myDate.setUTCDate(myDate.getUTCDate() + offsetDays);

offsetDays can be positive or negative and the result will be correct for any given initial date with any given offset.

How to format a number as percentage in R?

Even later:

As pointed out by @DzimitryM, percent() has been "retired" in favor of label_percent(), which is a synonym for the old percent_format() function.

label_percent() returns a function, so to use it, you need an extra pair of parentheses.

library(scales)
x <- c(-1, 0, 0.1, 0.555555, 1, 100)
label_percent()(x)
## [1] "-100%"   "0%"      "10%"     "56%"     "100%"    "10 000%"

Customize this by adding arguments inside the first set of parentheses.

label_percent(big.mark = ",", suffix = " percent")(x)
## [1] "-100 percent"   "0 percent"      "10 percent"
## [4] "56 percent"     "100 percent"    "10,000 percent"

An update, several years later:

These days there is a percent function in the scales package, as documented in krlmlr's answer. Use that instead of my hand-rolled solution.

Try something like

percent <- function(x, digits = 2, format = "f", ...) {
  paste0(formatC(100 * x, format = format, digits = digits, ...), "%")
}

With usage, e.g.,

x <- c(-1, 0, 0.1, 0.555555, 1, 100)
percent(x)

(If you prefer, change the format from "f" to "g".)

Java double.MAX_VALUE?

Double.MAX_VALUE is the maximum value a double can represent (somewhere around 1.7*10^308).

This should end in some calculation problems, if you try to subtract the maximum possible value of a data type.

Even though when you are dealing with money you should never use floating point values especially while rounding this can cause problems (you will either have to much or less money in your system then).

Add a properties file to IntelliJ's classpath

I had a similar problem with a log4j.xml file for a unit test, did all of the above. But figured out it was because I was only re-running a failed test....if I re-run the entire test class the correct file is picked up. This is under Intelli-j 9.0.4

Fastest way to check if string contains only digits

Here's some benchmarks based on 1000000 parses of the same string:

Updated for release stats:

IsDigitsOnly: 384588
TryParse:     639583
Regex:        1329571

Here's the code, looks like IsDigitsOnly is faster:

class Program
{
    private static Regex regex = new Regex("^[0-9]+$", RegexOptions.Compiled);

    static void Main(string[] args)
    {
        Stopwatch watch = new Stopwatch();
        string test = int.MaxValue.ToString();
        int value;

        watch.Start();
        for(int i=0; i< 1000000; i++)
        {
            int.TryParse(test, out value);
        }
        watch.Stop();
        Console.WriteLine("TryParse: "+watch.ElapsedTicks);

        watch.Reset();
        watch.Start();
        for (int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)
        {
            IsDigitsOnly(test);
        }
        watch.Stop();
        Console.WriteLine("IsDigitsOnly: " + watch.ElapsedTicks);

        watch.Reset();
        watch.Start();
        for (int i = 0; i < 1000000; i++)
        {
            regex.IsMatch(test);
        }
        watch.Stop();
        Console.WriteLine("Regex: " + watch.ElapsedTicks);

        Console.ReadLine();
    }

    static bool IsDigitsOnly(string str)
    {
        foreach (char c in str)
        {
            if (c < '0' || c > '9')
                return false;
        }

        return true;
    }
}

Of course it's worth noting that TryParse does allow leading/trailing whitespace as well as culture specific symbols. It's also limited on length of string.

How to succinctly write a formula with many variables from a data frame?

An extension of juba's method is to use reformulate, a function which is explicitly designed for such a task.

## Create a formula for a model with a large number of variables:
xnam <- paste("x", 1:25, sep="")

reformulate(xnam, "y")
y ~ x1 + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5 + x6 + x7 + x8 + x9 + x10 + x11 +
    x12 + x13 + x14 + x15 + x16 + x17 + x18 + x19 + x20 + x21 +
    x22 + x23 + x24 + x25

For the example in the OP, the easiest solution here would be

# add y variable to data.frame d
d <- cbind(y, d)
reformulate(names(d)[-1], names(d[1]))
y ~ x1 + x2 + x3

or

mod <- lm(reformulate(names(d)[-1], names(d[1])), data=d)

Note that adding the dependent variable to the data.frame in d <- cbind(y, d) is preferred not only because it allows for the use of reformulate, but also because it allows for future use of the lm object in functions like predict.

How to close the command line window after running a batch file?

For closing cmd window, especially after ending weblogic or JBOSS app servers console with Ctrl+C, I'm using 'call' command instead of 'start' in my batch files. My startWLS.cmd file then looks like:

call [BEA_HOME]\user_projects\domains\test_domain\startWebLogic.cmd

After Ctrl+C(and 'Y' answer) cmd window is automatically closed.

what happens when you type in a URL in browser

First the computer looks up the destination host. If it exists in local DNS cache, it uses that information. Otherwise, DNS querying is performed until the IP address is found.

Then, your browser opens a TCP connection to the destination host and sends the request according to HTTP 1.1 (or might use HTTP 1.0, but normal browsers don't do it any more).

The server looks up the required resource (if it exists) and responds using HTTP protocol, sends the data to the client (=your browser)

The browser then uses HTML parser to re-create document structure which is later presented to you on screen. If it finds references to external resources, such as pictures, css files, javascript files, these are is delivered the same way as the HTML document itself.

How do I specify the JDK for a GlassFish domain?

Had the same problem in my IntelliJ 17 after adding fresh glassfish 4.1.

I had set my JAVA_HOME environment variable as follow:

echo %JAVA_HOME%
C:\Java\jdk1.8.0_121\

Then opened %GLASSFISH_HOME%\glassfish\config\asenv.bat

And just added and the end of the file:

set AS_JAVA=%JAVA_HOME%

Then Glassfish started without problems.

How should I validate an e-mail address?

Can I STRONGLY recommend you don't try to 'validate' email addresses, you'll just get yourself into a lot of work for no good reason.

Just make sure what is entered won't break your own code - e.g. no spaces or illegal characters which might cause an Exception.

Anything else will just cause you a lot of work for minimal return...

What's the difference between Sender, From and Return-Path?

The official RFC which defines this specification could be found here:

http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc4021#section-2.1.2 (look at paragraph 2.1.2. and the following)

2.1.2. Header Field: From

Description:
    Mailbox of message author
[...]
Related information:
    Specifies the author(s) of the message; that is, the mailbox(es)
    of the person(s) or system(s) responsible for the writing of the
    message. Defined as standard by RFC 822.

2.1.3. Header Field: Sender

Description:
    Mailbox of message sender
[...]
Related information:
    Specifies the mailbox of the agent responsible for the actual
    transmission of the message. Defined as standard by RFC 822.

2.1.22. Header Field: Return-Path

Description:
    Message return path
[...]
Related information:
    Return path for message response diagnostics. See also RFC 2821
    [17]. Defined as standard by RFC 822.

What is the difference between static_cast<> and C style casting?

In short:

  1. static_cast<>() gives you a compile time checking ability, C-Style cast doesn't.
  2. static_cast<>() is more readable and can be spotted easily anywhere inside a C++ source code, C_Style cast is'nt.
  3. Intentions are conveyed much better using C++ casts.

More Explanation:

The static cast performs conversions between compatible types. It is similar to the C-style cast, but is more restrictive. For example, the C-style cast would allow an integer pointer to point to a char.

char c = 10;       // 1 byte
int *p = (int*)&c; // 4 bytes

Since this results in a 4-byte pointer ( a pointer to 4-byte datatype) pointing to 1 byte of allocated memory, writing to this pointer will either cause a run-time error or will overwrite some adjacent memory.

*p = 5; // run-time error: stack corruption

In contrast to the C-style cast, the static cast will allow the compiler to check that the pointer and pointee data types are compatible, which allows the programmer to catch this incorrect pointer assignment during compilation.

int *q = static_cast<int*>(&c); // compile-time error

You can also check this page on more explanation on C++ casts : Click Here

Matrix Multiplication in pure Python?

When I had to do some matrix arithmetic I defined a new class to help. Within such a class you can define magic methods like __add__, or, in your use-case, __matmul__, allowing you to define x = a @ b or a @= b rather than matrixMult(a,b). __matmul__ was added in Python 3.5 per PEP 465.

I have included some code which implements this below (I excluded the prohibitively long __init__ method, which essentially creates a two-dimensional list self.mat and a tuple self.order according to what is passed to it)

class Matrix:
    def __matmul__(self, multiplier):
        if self.order[1] != multiplier.order[0]:
            raise ValueError("The multiplier was non-conformable under multiplication.")
        return [[sum(a*b for a,b in zip(srow,mcol)) for mcol in zip(*multiplier.mat)] for srow in self.mat]

    def __imatmul__(self, multiplier):
        self.mat = self @ multiplier
        return self.mat

    def __rmatmul__(self, multiplicand):
        if multiplicand.order[1] != self.order[0]:
            raise ValueError("The multiplier was non-conformable under multiplication.")
        return [[sum(a*b for a,b in zip(mrow,scol)) for scol in zip(*self.mat)] for mrow in multiplicand.mat]

Note:

  • __rmatmul__ is used if b @ a is called and b does not implement __matmul__ (e.g. if I wanted to implement premultiplying by a 2D list)
  • __imatmul__ is required for a @= b to work correctly;
  • If a matrix is non-conformable under multiplication it means that it cannot be multiplied, usually because it has more or less rows than there are columns in the multiplicand

Start your command with a space and it won't be included in the history.

Be aware that this does require the environment variable $HISTCONTROL to be set.

  • Check that the following command returns ignorespace or ignoreboth

    #> echo $HISTCONTROL

  • To add the environment variable if missing, the following line can be added to the bash profile. E.g. %HOME/.bashrc

    export HISTCONTROL=ignorespace

After sourcing the profile again space prefixed commands will not be written to $HISTFILE

Angular JS Uncaught Error: [$injector:modulerr]

I previously had the same issue, but I realized that I didn't include the "app.js" (the main application) inside my main page (index.html). So even when you include all the dependencies required by AngularJS, you might end up with that error in the console. So always make sure to include the necessary files inside your main page and you shouldn't have that issue.

Hope this helps.

A simple algorithm for polygon intersection

You have not given us your representation of a polygon. So I am choosing (more like suggesting) one for you :)

Represent each polygon as one big convex polygon, and a list of smaller convex polygons which need to be 'subtracted' from that big convex polygon.

Now given two polygons in that representation, you can compute the intersection as:

Compute intersection of the big convex polygons to form the big polygon of the intersection. Then 'subtract' the intersections of all the smaller ones of both to get a list of subracted polygons.

You get a new polygon following the same representation.

Since convex polygon intersection is easy, this intersection finding should be easy too.

This seems like it should work, but I haven't given it more deeper thought as regards to correctness/time/space complexity.

How can I configure Logback to log different levels for a logger to different destinations?

I believe this would be the simplest solution:

<configuration>
    <contextName>selenium-plugin</contextName>
    <!-- Logging configuration -->
    <appender name="STDOUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender">
        <Target>System.out</Target>
        <filter class="ch.qos.logback.classic.filter.LevelFilter">
            <level>INFO</level>
            <onMatch>ACCEPT</onMatch>
            <onMismatch>DENY</onMismatch>
        </filter>
        <encoder>
            <pattern>[%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.SSS}] [%level] %msg%n</pattern>
        </encoder>
    </appender>
    <appender name="STDERR" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender">
            <Target>System.err</Target>
        <filter class="ch.qos.logback.classic.filter.LevelFilter">
            <level>ERROR</level>
            <onMatch>ACCEPT</onMatch>
            <onMismatch>DENY</onMismatch>
        </filter>
        <encoder>
            <pattern>[%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss.SSS}] [%level] [%thread] %logger{10} [%file:%line] %msg%n</pattern>
        </encoder>
    </appender>
    <root level="INFO">
        <appender-ref ref="STDOUT"/>
        <appender-ref ref="STDERR" />

How do I convert csv file to rdd

A simplistic approach would be to have a way to preserve the header.

Let's say you have a file.csv like:

user, topic, hits
om,  scala, 120
daniel, spark, 80
3754978, spark, 1

We can define a header class that uses a parsed version of the first row:

class SimpleCSVHeader(header:Array[String]) extends Serializable {
  val index = header.zipWithIndex.toMap
  def apply(array:Array[String], key:String):String = array(index(key))
}

That we can use that header to address the data further down the road:

val csv = sc.textFile("file.csv")  // original file
val data = csv.map(line => line.split(",").map(elem => elem.trim)) //lines in rows
val header = new SimpleCSVHeader(data.take(1)(0)) // we build our header with the first line
val rows = data.filter(line => header(line,"user") != "user") // filter the header out
val users = rows.map(row => header(row,"user")
val usersByHits = rows.map(row => header(row,"user") -> header(row,"hits").toInt)
...

Note that the header is not much more than a simple map of a mnemonic to the array index. Pretty much all this could be done on the ordinal place of the element in the array, like user = row(0)

PS: Welcome to Scala :-)

How to revert uncommitted changes including files and folders?

You can just use following git command which can revert back all the uncommitted changes made in your repository:

How to merge a Series and DataFrame

If I could suggest setting up your dataframes like this (auto-indexing):

df = pd.DataFrame({'a':[np.nan, 1, 2], 'b':[4, 5, 6]})

then you can set up your s1 and s2 values thus (using shape() to return the number of rows from df):

s = pd.DataFrame({'s1':[5]*df.shape[0], 's2':[6]*df.shape[0]})

then the result you want is easy:

display (df.merge(s, left_index=True, right_index=True))

Alternatively, just add the new values to your dataframe df:

df = pd.DataFrame({'a':[nan, 1, 2], 'b':[4, 5, 6]})
df['s1']=5
df['s2']=6
display(df)

Both return:

     a  b  s1  s2
0  NaN  4   5   6
1  1.0  5   5   6
2  2.0  6   5   6

If you have another list of data (instead of just a single value to apply), and you know it is in the same sequence as df, eg:

s1=['a','b','c']

then you can attach this in the same way:

df['s1']=s1

returns:

     a  b s1
0  NaN  4  a
1  1.0  5  b
2  2.0  6  c

UINavigationBar Hide back Button Text

The only thing which works with no side-effects is to create a custom back button. As long as you don't provide a custom action, even the slide gesture works.

extension UIViewController {
func setupBackButton() {
    let customBackButton = UIBarButtonItem(title: " ", style: .plain, target: nil, action: nil)
    navigationItem.backBarButtonItem = customBackButton
}}

Unfortunately, if you want all back buttons in the not to have any titles, you need to setup this custom back button in all your view controllers :/

override func viewDidLoad() {
    super.viewDidLoad()

    setupBackButton()
}

It is very important you set a whitespace as the title and not the empty string.

Error : No resource found that matches the given name (at 'icon' with value '@drawable/icon')

In my case, I use Xamarin with Visual Studio 2013. I create Blank App (Android) then deploy without any code update.

You can try:

  • Make sure that icon.png (or whatever files mentioned in the application android:icon tag) is present in the drawable-hdpi folder inside res folder of Android project.

  • If it shows the error even if the icon.png is present,then remove the statement application android:icon from the AndroidManifest.xml and add it again.

  • Check your project folder's path. If it is too long, or contains space, or contains any unicode character, try to relocated.

2 "style" inline css img tags?

You don't need 2 style attributes - just use one:

<img src="http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/119/original120x75.png"
                                     style="height:100px;width:100px;" alt="25"/>

Consider, however, using a CSS class instead:

CSS:

.100pxSquare
{
  width: 100px;
  height: 100px;
}

HTML:

<img src="http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/119/original120x75.png"
                                          class="100pxSquare" alt="25"/>

invalid new-expression of abstract class type

invalid new-expression of abstract class type 'box'

There is nothing unclear about the error message. Your class box has at least one member that is not implemented, which means it is abstract. You cannot instantiate an abstract class.

If this is a bug, fix your box class by implementing the missing member(s).

If it's by design, derive from box, implement the missing member(s) and use the derived class.

How to get RegistrationID using GCM in android

In response to your first question: Yes, you have to run a server app to send the messages, as well as a client app to receive them.

In response to your second question: Yes, every application needs its own API key. This key is for your server app, not the client.

sort() was deprecated for DataFrames in favor of either:

sort() was deprecated (but still available) in Pandas with release 0.17 (2015-10-09) with the introduction of sort_values() and sort_index(). It was removed from Pandas with release 0.20 (2017-05-05).

How do I loop through rows with a data reader in C#?

That's the way the DataReader works, it's designed to read the database rows one at a time.

while(reader.Read())
{

  var value2 = reader.GetValue(1); // On first iteration will be hello2
  var value3 = reader.GetValue(2); // On first iteration will be hello3

Android - Dynamically Add Views into View

To make @Mark Fisher's answer more clear, the inserted view being inflated should be a xml file under layout folder but without a layout (ViewGroup) like LinearLayout etc. inside. My example:

res/layout/my_view.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TextView xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:id="@+id/i_am_id"
    android:text="my name"
    android:textSize="17sp"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent"
    android:layout_weight="1"/>

Then, the insertion point should be a layout like LinearLayout:

res/layout/activity_main.xml

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<RelativeLayout
    xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    xmlns:tools="http://schemas.android.com/tools"
    android:id="@+id/aaa"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="match_parent">

    <LinearLayout
        android:id="@+id/insert_point"
        android:layout_width="match_parent"
        android:layout_height="match_parent">

    </LinearLayout>

</RelativeLayout>

Then the code should be

@Override
protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
    super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
    setContentView(R.layout.activity_shopping_cart);

    LayoutInflater inflater = getLayoutInflater();
    View view = inflater.inflate(R.layout.my_view, null);
    ViewGroup main = (ViewGroup) findViewById(R.id.insert_point);
    main.addView(view, 0);
}

The reason I post this very similar answer is that when I tried to implement Mark's solution, I got stuck on what xml file should I use for insert_point and the child view. I used layout in the child view firstly and it was totally not working, which took me several hours to figure out. So hope my exploration can save others' time.

Interface extends another interface but implements its methods

Why does it implement its methods? How can it implement its methods when an interface can't contain method body? How can it implement the methods when it extends the other interface and not implement it? What is the purpose of an interface implementing another interface?

Interface does not implement the methods of another interface but just extends them. One example where the interface extension is needed is: consider that you have a vehicle interface with two methods moveForward and moveBack but also you need to incorporate the Aircraft which is a vehicle but with some addition methods like moveUp, moveDown so in the end you have:

public interface IVehicle {
  bool moveForward(int x);
  bool moveBack(int x);
};

and airplane:

public interface IAirplane extends IVehicle {
  bool moveDown(int x);
  bool moveUp(int x);
};

Reading a string with scanf

An array "decays" into a pointer to its first element, so scanf("%s", string) is equivalent to scanf("%s", &string[0]). On the other hand, scanf("%s", &string) passes a pointer-to-char[256], but it points to the same place.

Then scanf, when processing the tail of its argument list, will try to pull out a char *. That's the Right Thing when you've passed in string or &string[0], but when you've passed in &string you're depending on something that the language standard doesn't guarantee, namely that the pointers &string and &string[0] -- pointers to objects of different types and sizes that start at the same place -- are represented the same way.

I don't believe I've ever encountered a system on which that doesn't work, and in practice you're probably safe. None the less, it's wrong, and it could fail on some platforms. (Hypothetical example: a "debugging" implementation that includes type information with every pointer. I think the C implementation on the Symbolics "Lisp Machines" did something like this.)

What is a Memory Heap?

A memory heap is a location in memory where memory may be allocated at random access.
Unlike the stack where memory is allocated and released in a very defined order, individual data elements allocated on the heap are typically released in ways which is asynchronous from one another. Any such data element is freed when the program explicitly releases the corresponding pointer, and this may result in a fragmented heap. In opposition only data at the top (or the bottom, depending on the way the stack works) may be released, resulting in data element being freed in the reverse order they were allocated.

How to parse SOAP XML?

PHP version > 5.0 has a nice SoapClient integrated. Which doesn't require to parse response xml. Here's a quick example

echo $res->PaymentNotification->payment;

How to call shell commands from Ruby

We can achieve it in multiple ways.

Using Kernel#exec, nothing after this command is executed:

exec('ls ~')

Using backticks or %x

`ls ~`
=> "Applications\nDesktop\nDocuments"
%x(ls ~)
=> "Applications\nDesktop\nDocuments"

Using Kernel#system command, returns true if successful, false if unsuccessful and returns nil if command execution fails:

system('ls ~')
=> true

Differences between INDEX, PRIMARY, UNIQUE, FULLTEXT in MySQL?

All of these are kinds of indices.

primary: must be unique, is an index, is (likely) the physical index, can be only one per table.

unique: as it says. You can't have more than one row with a tuple of this value. Note that since a unique key can be over more than one column, this doesn't necessarily mean that each individual column in the index is unique, but that each combination of values across these columns is unique.

index: if it's not primary or unique, it doesn't constrain values inserted into the table, but it does allow them to be looked up more efficiently.

fulltext: a more specialized form of indexing that allows full text search. Think of it as (essentially) creating an "index" for each "word" in the specified column.

The performance impact of using instanceof in Java

It's hard to say how a certain JVM implements instance of, but in most cases, Objects are comparable to structs and classes are as well and every object struct has a pointer to the the class struct it is an instance of. So actually instanceof for

if (o instanceof java.lang.String)

might be as fast as the following C code

if (objectStruct->iAmInstanceOf == &java_lang_String_class)

assuming a JIT compiler is in place and does a decent job.

Considering that this is only accessing a pointer, getting a pointer at a certain offset the pointer points to and comparing this to another pointer (which is basically the same as testing to 32 bit numbers being equal), I'd say the operation can actually be very fast.

It doesn't have to, though, it depends a lot on the JVM. However, if this would turn out to be the bottleneck operation in your code, I'd consider the JVM implementation rather poor. Even one that has no JIT compiler and only interprets code should be able to make an instanceof test in virtually no time.

How to make pylab.savefig() save image for 'maximized' window instead of default size

I think you need to specify a different resolution when saving the figure to a file:

fig = matplotlib.pyplot.figure()

fig.savefig("myfig.png",dpi=600)

Specifying a large dpi value should have a similar effect as maximizing the GUI window.

How to connect HTML Divs with Lines?

You can use SVGs to connect two divs using only HTML and CSS:

<div id="div1" style="width: 100px; height: 100px; top:0; left:0; background:#777; position:absolute;"></div>
<div id="div2" style="width: 100px; height: 100px; top:300px; left:300px; background:#333; position:absolute;"></div>

What does LPCWSTR stand for and how should it be handled with?

LPCWSTR stands for "Long Pointer to Constant Wide String". The W stands for Wide and means that the string is stored in a 2 byte character vs. the normal char. Common for any C/C++ code that has to deal with non-ASCII only strings.=

To get a normal C literal string to assign to a LPCWSTR, you need to prefix it with L

LPCWSTR a = L"TestWindow";

With current HTML5 it should be possible to calculate the md5 hash of a binary file, But I think the step before that would be to convert the banary data BlobBuilder to a String, I am trying to do this step: but have not been successful.

Here is the code I tried: Converting a BlobBuilder to string, in HTML5 Javascript

symfony2 : failed to write cache directory

If you face this error when you start Symfony project with docker (my Symfony version 5.1). Or errors like these:

Uncaught Exception: Failed to write file "/var/www/html/mysite.com.local/var/cache/dev/App_KernelDevDebugContainer.xml"" while reading upstream

Uncaught Warning: file_put_contents(/var/www/html/mysite.com.local/var/cache/dev/App_KernelDevDebugContainerDeprecations.log): failed to open stream: Permission denied" while reading upstream

Fix below helped me.

In Dockerfile for nginx container add line:

RUN usermod -u 1000 www-data

In Dockerfile for php-fpm container add line:

RUN usermod -u 1000 www-data

Then remove everything in directories "/var/cache", "/var/log" and rebuild docker's containers.

Hide all elements with class using plain Javascript

As simple as the following:

let elements = document.querySelectorAll('.custom-class')

elements.forEach((item: any) => {
  item.style.display = 'none'
})

With that, you avoid all the looping, indexing, and such.

How to display raw html code in PRE or something like it but without escaping it

Essentially the original question can be broken down in 2 parts:

  • Main objective/challenge: embedding(/transporting) a raw formatted code-snippet (any kind of code) in a web-page's markup (for simple copy/paste/edit due to no encoding/escaping)
  • correctly displaying/rendering that code-snippet (possibly edit it) in the browser

The short (but) ambiguous answer is: you can't, ...but you can (get very close).
(I know, that are 3 contradicting answers, so read on...)

(polyglot)(x)(ht)ml Markup-languages rely on wrapping (almost) everything between begin/opening and end/closing tags/character(sequences).
So, to embed any kind of raw code/snippet inside your markup-language, one will always have to escape/encode every instance (inside that snippet) that resembles the character(-sequence) that would close the wrapping 'container' element in the markup. (During this post I'll refer to this as rule no 1.)
Think of "some "data" here" or <i>..close italics with '</i>'-tag</i>, where it is obvious one should escape/encode (something in) </i and " (or change container's quote-character from " to ').

So, because of rule no 1, you can't 'just' embed 'any' unknown raw code-snippet inside markup.
Because, if one has to escape/encode even one character inside the raw snippet, then that snippet would no longer be the same original 'pure raw code' that anyone can copy/paste/edit in the document's markup without further thought. It would lead to malformed/illegal markup and Mojibake (mainly) because of entities.
Also, should that snippet contain such characters, you'd still need some javascript to 'translate' that character(sequence) from (and to) it's escaped/encoded representation to display the snippet correctly in the 'webpage' (for copy/paste/edit).

That brings us to (some of) the datatypes that markup-languages specify. These datatypes essentially define what are considered 'valid characters' and their meaning (per tag, property, etc.):

  • PCDATA (Parsed Character DATA): will expand entities and one must escape <, & (and > depending on markup language/version).
    Most tags like body, div, pre, etc, but also textarea (until HTML5) fall under this type.
    So not only do you need to encode all the container's closing character-sequences inside the snippet, you also have to encode all <, & (,>) characters (at minimum).
    Needless to say, encoding/escaping this many characters falls outside this objective's scope of embedding a raw snippet in the markup.
    '..But a textarea seems to work...', yes, either because of the browsers error-engine trying to make something out of it, or because HTML5:

  • RCDATA (Replaceable Character DATA): will not not treat tags inside the text as markup (but are still governed by rule 1), so one doesn't need to encode < (>). BUT entities are still expanded, so they and 'ambiguous ampersands' (&) need special care.
    The current HTML5 spec says the textarea is now a RCDATA field and (quote):

    The text in raw text and RCDATA elements must not contain any occurrences of the string "</" (U+003C LESS-THAN SIGN, U+002F SOLIDUS) followed by characters that case-insensitively match the tag name of the element followed by one of U+0009 CHARACTER TABULATION (tab), U+000A LINE FEED (LF), U+000C FORM FEED (FF), U+000D CARRIAGE RETURN (CR), U+0020 SPACE, U+003E GREATER-THAN SIGN (>), or U+002F SOLIDUS (/).

    Thus no matter what, textarea needs a hefty entity translation handler or it will eventually Mojibake on entities!

  • CDATA (Character Data) will not treat tags inside the text as markup and will not expand entities.
    So as long as the raw snippet code does not violate rule 1 (that one can't have the containers closing character(sequence) inside the snippet), this requires no other escaping/encoding.

Clearly this boils down to: how can we minimize the number of characters/character-sequences that still need to be encoded in the snippet's raw source and the number of times that character(sequence) might appear in an average snippet; something that is also of importance for the javascript that handles the translation of these characters (if they occur).

So what 'containers' have this CDATA context?

Most value properties of tags are CDATA, so one could (ab)use a hidden input's value property (proof of concept jsfiddle here).
However (conform rule 1) this creates an encoding/escape problem with nested quotes (" and ') in the raw snippet and one needs some javascript to get/translate and set the snippet in another (visible) element (or simply setting it as a text-area's value). Somehow this gave me problems with entities in FF (just like in a textarea). But it doesn't really matter, since the 'price' of having to escape/encode nested quotes is higher then a (HTML5) textarea (quotes are quite common in source code..).

What about trying to (ab)use <![CDATA[<tag>bla & bla</tag>]]>?
As Jukka points out in his extended answer, this would only work in (rare) 'real xhtml'.
I thought of using a script-tag (with or without such a CDATA wrapper inside the script-tag) together with a multi-line comment /* */ that wraps the raw snippet (script-tags can have an id and you can access them by count). But since this obviously introduces a escaping problem with */, ]]> and </script in the raw snippet, this doesn't seem like a solution either.

Please post other viable 'containers' in the comments to this answer.

By the way, encoding or counting the number of - characters and balancing them out inside a comment tag <!-- --> is just insane for this purpose (apart from rule 1).

That leaves us with Jukka K. Korpela's excellent answer: the <xmp> tag seems the best option!

The 'forgotten' <xmp> holds CDATA, is intended for this purpose AND is indeed still in the current HTML 5 spec (and has been at least since HTML3.2); exactly what we need! It's also widely supported, even in IE6 (that is.. until it suffers from the same regression as the scrolling table-body).
Note: as Jukka pointed out, this will not work in true xhtml or polyglot (that will treat it as a pre) and the xmp tag must still adhere to rule no 1. But that's the 'only' rule.

Consider the following markup:

<!-- ATTENTION: replace any occurrence of &lt;/xmp with </xmp -->
<xmp id="snippet-container">
<div>
    <div>this is an example div &amp; holds an xmp tag:<br />
        <xmp>
<html><head>  <!-- indentation col 0!! -->
    <title>My Title</title>
</head><body>
    <p>hello world !!</p>
</body></html>
        &lt;/xmp>  <!-- note this encoded/escaped tag -->
    </div>
    This line is also part of the snippet
</div>
</xmp>

The above codeblok illustrates a raw piece of markup where <xmp id="snippet-container"> contains an (almost raw) code-snippet (containing div>div>xmp>html-document).
Notice the encoded closing tag in this markup? To comply with rule no 1, this was encoded/escaped).

So embedding/transporting the (sometimes almost) raw code is/seems solved.

What about displaying/rendering the snippet (and that encoded &lt;/xmp>)?

The browser will (or it should) render the snippet (the contents inside snippet-container) exactly the way you see it in the codeblock above (with some discrepancy amongst browsers whether or not the snippet starts with a blank line).
That includes the formatting/indentation, entities (like the string &amp;), full tags, comments AND the encoded closing tag &lt;/xmp> (just like it was encoded in the markup). And depending on browser(version) one could even try use the property contenteditable="true" to edit this snippet (all that without javascript enabled). Doing something like textarea.value=xmp.innerHTML is also a breeze.

So you can... if the snippet doesn't contain the containers closing character-sequence.

However, should a raw snippet contain the closing character-sequence </xmp (because it is an example of xmp itself or it contains some regex, etc), you must accept that you have to encode/escape that sequence in the raw snippet AND need a javascript handler to translate that encoding to display/render the encoded &lt;/xmp> like </xmp> inside a textarea (for editing/posting) or (for example) a pre just to correctly render the snippet's code (or so it seems).

A very rudimentary jsfiddle example of this here. Note that getting/embedding/displaying/retrieving-to-textarea worked perfect even in IE6. But setting the xmp's innerHTML revealed some interesting 'would-be-intelligent' behavior on IE's part. There is a more extensive note and workaround on that in the fiddle.

But now comes the important kicker (another reason why you only get very close): Just as an over-simplified example, imagine this rabbit-hole:

Intended raw code-snippet:

<!-- remember to translate between </xmp> and &lt;/xmp> -->
<xmp>
<p>a paragraph</p>
</xmp>

Well, to comply with rule 1, we 'only' need to encode those </xmp[> \n\r\t\f\/] sequences, right?

So that gives us the following markup (using just a possible encoding):

<xmp id="container">
<!-- remember to translate between &lt;/xmp> and &lt;/xmp> -->
<xmp>
<p>a paragraph</p>
&lt;/xmp>
</xmp>

Hmm.. shalt I get my crystal ball or flip a coin? No, let the computer look at its system-clock and state that a derived number is 'random'. Yes, that should do it..

Using a regex like: xmp.innerHTML.replace(/&lt;(?=\/xmp[> \n\r\t\f\/])/gi, '<');, would translate 'back' to this:

<!-- remember to translate between </xmp> and </xmp> -->
<xmp>
<p>a paragraph</p>
</xmp>

Hmm.. seems this random generator is broken... Houston..?
Should you have missed the joke/problem, read again starting at the 'intended raw code-snippet'.

Wait, I know, we (also) need to encode .... to ....
Ok, rewind to 'intended raw code-snippet' and read again.
Somehow this all begins to smell like the famous hilarious-but-true rexgex-answer on SO, a good read for people fluent in mojibake.

Maybe someone knows a clever algorithm or solution to fix this problem, but I assume that the embedded raw code will get more and more obscure to the point where you'd be better of properly escaping/encoding just your <, & (and >), just like the rest of the world.

Conclusion: (using the xmp tag)

  • it can be done with known snippets that do not contain the container's closing character-sequence,
  • we can get very close to the original objective with known snippets that only use 'basic first-level' escaping/encoding so we don't fall in the rabbithole,
  • but ultimately it seems that one can't do this reliably in a 'production-environment' where people can/should copy/paste/edit 'any unknown' raw snippets while not knowing/understanding the implications/rules/rabbithole (depending on your implementation of handling/translating for rule 1 and the rabbit-hole).

Hope this helps!

PS: Whilst I would appreciate an upvote if you find this explanation useful, I kind of think Jukka's answer should be the accepted answer (should no better option/answer come along), since he was the one who remembered the xmp tag (that I forgot about over the years and got 'distracted' by the commonly advocated PCDATA elements like pre, textarea, etc.).
This answer originated in explaining why you can't do it (with any unknown raw snippet) and explain some obvious pitfalls that some other (now deleted) answers overlooked when advising a textarea for embedding/transport. I've expanded my existing explanation to also support and further explain Jukka's answer (since all that entity and *CDATA stuff is almost harder than code-pages).

Replacing a 32-bit loop counter with 64-bit introduces crazy performance deviations with _mm_popcnt_u64 on Intel CPUs

This is not an answer, but it's hard to read if I put results in comment.

I get these results with a Mac Pro (Westmere 6-Cores Xeon 3.33 GHz). I compiled it with clang -O3 -msse4 -lstdc++ a.cpp -o a (-O2 get same result).

clang with uint64_t size=atol(argv[1])<<20;

unsigned    41950110000 0.811198 sec    12.9263 GB/s
uint64_t    41950110000 0.622884 sec    16.8342 GB/s

clang with uint64_t size=1<<20;

unsigned    41950110000 0.623406 sec    16.8201 GB/s
uint64_t    41950110000 0.623685 sec    16.8126 GB/s

I also tried to:

  1. Reverse the test order, the result is the same so it rules out the cache factor.
  2. Have the for statement in reverse: for (uint64_t i=size/8;i>0;i-=4). This gives the same result and proves the compile is smart enough to not divide size by 8 every iteration (as expected).

Here is my wild guess:

The speed factor comes in three parts:

  • code cache: uint64_t version has larger code size, but this does not have an effect on my Xeon CPU. This makes the 64-bit version slower.

  • Instructions used. Note not only the loop count, but the buffer is accessed with a 32-bit and 64-bit index on the two versions. Accessing a pointer with a 64-bit offset requests a dedicated 64-bit register and addressing, while you can use immediate for a 32-bit offset. This may make the 32-bit version faster.

  • Instructions are only emitted on the 64-bit compile (that is, prefetch). This makes 64-bit faster.

The three factors together match with the observed seemingly conflicting results.

npm install error - unable to get local issuer certificate

There is an issue discussed here which talks about using ca files, but it's a bit beyond my understanding and I'm unsure what to do about it.

This isn't too difficult once you know how! For Windows:

Using Chrome go to the root URL NPM is complaining about (so https://raw.githubusercontent.com in your case). Open up dev tools and go to Security-> View Certificate. Check Certification path and make sure your at the top level certificate, if not open that one. Now go to "Details" and export the cert with "Copy to File...".

You need to convert this from DER to PEM. There are several ways to do this, but the easiest way I found was an online tool which should be easy to find with relevant keywords.

Now if you open the key with your favorite text editor you should see

-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----

yourkey

-----END CERTIFICATE-----

This is the format you need. You can do this for as many keys as you need, and combine them all into one file. I had to do github and the npm registry keys in my case.

Now just edit your .npmrc to point to the file containing your keys like so

cafile=C:\workspace\rootCerts.crt

I have personally found this to perform significantly better behind our corporate proxy as opposed to the strict-ssl option. YMMV.

SQL: How to to SUM two values from different tables

For your current structure, you could also try the following:

select cash.Country, cash.Value, cheque.Value, cash.Value + cheque.Value as [Total]
from Cash
join Cheque
on cash.Country = cheque.Country

I think I prefer a union between the two tables, and a group by on the country name as mentioned above.

But I would also recommend normalising your tables. Ideally you'd have a country table, with Id and Name, and a payments table with: CountryId (FK to countries), Total, Type (cash/cheque)

    String language = MyPreferenceUtil.getInstance().getString("saved_locale", "en");

How to sort with lambda in Python

You're trying to use key functions with lambda functions.

Python and other languages like C# or F# use lambda functions.

Also, when it comes to key functions and according to the documentation

Both list.sort() and sorted() have a key parameter to specify a function to be called on each list element prior to making comparisons.

...

The value of the key parameter should be a function that takes a single argument and returns a key to use for sorting purposes. This technique is fast because the key function is called exactly once for each input record.

So, key functions have a parameter key and it can indeed receive a lambda function.

In Real Python there's a nice example of its usage. Let's say you have the following list

ids = ['id1', 'id100', 'id2', 'id22', 'id3', 'id30']

and want to sort through its "integers". Then, you'd do something like

sorted_ids = sorted(ids, key=lambda x: int(x[2:])) # Integer sort

and printing it would give

['id1', 'id2', 'id3', 'id22', 'id30', 'id100']

In your particular case, you're only missing to write key= before lambda. So, you'd want to use the following

a = sorted(a, key=lambda x: x.modified, reverse=True)

Call of overloaded function is ambiguous

Use

p.setval(static_cast<const char *>(0));

or

p.setval(static_cast<unsigned int>(0));

As indicated by the error, the type of 0 is int. This can just as easily be cast to an unsigned int or a const char *. By making the cast manually, you are telling the compiler which overload you want.

String, StringBuffer, and StringBuilder

String Family

String

The String class represents character strings. All string literals in Java program, such as "abc" are implemented as instances of this class.

String objects are immutable once they are created we can't change. (Strings are constants)

  • If a String is created using constructor or method then those strings will be stored in Heap Memory as well as SringConstantPool. But before saving in pool it invokes intern() method to check object availability with same content in pool using equals method. If String-copy is available in the Pool then returns the reference. Otherwise, String object is added to the pool and returns the reference.

    • The Java language provides special support for the string concatenation operator (+), and for conversion of other objects to strings. String concatenation is implemented through the StringBuilder(or StringBuffer) class and its append method.

    String heapSCP = new String("Yash");
    heapSCP.concat(".");
    heapSCP = heapSCP + "M";
    heapSCP = heapSCP + 777;

    // For Example: String Source Code
    public String concat(String str) {
        int otherLen = str.length();
        if (otherLen == 0) {
            return this;
        }
        int len = value.length;
        char buf[] = Arrays.copyOf(value, len + otherLen);
        str.getChars(buf, len);
        return new String(buf, true);
    }

  • String literals are stored in StringConstantPool.

    String onlyPool = "Yash";

StringBuilder and StringBuffer are mutable sequence of characters. That means one can change the value of these object's. StringBuffer has the same methods as the StringBuilder, but each method in StringBuffer is synchronized so it is thread safe.

  • StringBuffer and StringBuilder data can only be created using new operator. So, they get stored in Heap memory.

  • Instances of StringBuilder are not safe for use by multiple threads. If such synchronization is required then it is recommended that StringBuffer be used.

    StringBuffer threadSafe = new StringBuffer("Yash");
    threadSafe.append(".M");
    threadSafe.toString();

    StringBuilder nonSync = new StringBuilder("Yash");
    nonSync.append(".M");
    nonSync.toString();

  • StringBuffer and StringBuilder are having a Special methods like., replace(int start, int end, String str) and reverse().

    NOTE: StringBuffer and SringBuilder are mutable as they provides the implementation of Appendable Interface.

When to use which one.

  • If a you are not going to change the value every time then its better to Use String Class. As part of Generics if you want to Sort Comparable<T> or compare a values then go for String Class.

    //ClassCastException: java.lang.StringBuffer cannot be cast to java.lang.Comparable
    Set<StringBuffer> set = new TreeSet<StringBuffer>();
    set.add( threadSafe );
    System.out.println("Set : "+ set);

  • If you are going to modify the value every time the go for StringBuilder which is faster than StringBuffer. If multiple threads are modifying the value the go for StringBuffer.

How can a Jenkins user authentication details be "passed" to a script which uses Jenkins API to create jobs?

If you want to write a script to automate creation of jobs using the Jenkins API, you can use one of the API clients to do that. A ruby client for Jenkins is available at https://github.com/arangamani/jenkins_api_client

gem install jenkins_api_client

require "rubygems"
require "jenkins_api_client"

# Initialize the client by passing in the server information
# and credentials to communicate with the server
client = JenkinsApi::Client.new(
  :server_ip => "127.0.0.1",
  :username => "awesomeuser",
  :password => "awesomepassword"
)

# The following block will create 10 jobs in Jenkins
# test_job_0, test_job_1, test_job_2, ...
10.times do |num|
  client.job.create_freestyle(:name => "test_job_#{num}")
end

# The jobs in Jenkins can be listed using
client.job.list_all

The API client can be used to perform a lot of operations.

OpenCV - DLL missing, but it's not?

I have had numerous problems with opencv and only succeded after a gruesome 4-6 months. This is the last problem I have had, but all of the above didn't work. What worked for me was just copying and pasting the opencv_core2*.dll (and opencv_highgui2*.dll which it will ask for since you included this as well) into the release (or debug folder - I'm assuming. Haven't tested this) folder of your project, where your application file is.
