Unique-index is an index that sets one or multiple fields to be unique in a data entity

How do I delete all the duplicate records in a MySQL table without temp tables

As noted in the comments, the query in Saharsh Shah's answer must be run multiple times if items are duplicated more than once.

Here's a solution that doesn't delete any data, and keeps the data in the original table the entire time, allowing for duplicates to be deleted while keeping the table 'live':

alter table tableA add column duplicate tinyint(1) not null default '0';

update tableA set
duplicate=if(@member_id=member_id
             and @quiz_num=quiz_num
             and @question_num=question_num
             and @answer_num=answer_num,1,0),
member_id=(@member_id:=member_id),
quiz_num=(@quiz_num:=quiz_num),
question_num=(@question_num:=question_num),
answer_num=(@answer_num:=answer_num)
order by member_id, quiz_num, question_num, answer_num;

delete from tableA where duplicate=1;

alter table tableA drop column duplicate;

This basically checks to see if the current row is the same as the last row, and if it is, marks it as duplicate (the order statement ensures that duplicates will show up next to each other). Then you delete the duplicate records. I remove the duplicate column at the end to bring it back to its original state.

It looks like alter table ignore also might go away soon: http://dev.mysql.com/worklog/task/?id=7395

.war vs .ear file

WAR (web archive) files contain servlet class files, JSPs (Java servlet pages), HTML and graphical files, and other supporting files.

EAR (enterprise archive) files contain the WAR files along with the JAR files containing code.

There may be other things in those files but their basically meant for what they sound like they mean: WAR for web-type stuff, EAR for enterprise-type stuff (WARs, code, connectors et al).

100% width Twitter Bootstrap 3 template

In BOOTSTRAP 4 you can use

<div class="row m-0">
my fullwidth div
</div>

... if you just use a .row without the .m-0 as a top level div, you will have unwanted margin, which makes the page wider than the browser window and cause a horizontal scrollbar.

Get difference between two lists

i'll toss in since none of the present solutions yield a tuple:

temp3 = tuple(set(temp1) - set(temp2))

alternatively:

#edited using @Mark Byers idea. If you accept this one as answer, just accept his instead.
temp3 = tuple(x for x in temp1 if x not in set(temp2))

Like the other non-tuple yielding answers in this direction, it preserves order

SQL Server: Cannot insert an explicit value into a timestamp column

If you have a need to copy the exact same timestamp data, change the data type in the destination table from timestamp to binary(8) -- i used varbinary(8) and it worked fine.

This obviously breaks any timestamp functionality in the destination table, so make sure you're ok with that first.

How to get row data by clicking a button in a row in an ASP.NET gridview

Place the commandName in .aspx page

 <asp:Button  ID="btnDelete" Text="Delete" runat="server" CssClass="CoolButtons" CommandName="DeleteData"/>

Subscribe the rowCommand event for the grid and you can try like this,

{
        if (e.CommandName == "DeleteData")
        {
            GridViewRow row = (GridViewRow)(((Button)e.CommandSource).NamingContainer);
            HiddenField hdnDataId = (HiddenField)row.FindControl("hdnDataId");
         }

Get: TypeError: 'dict_values' object does not support indexing when using python 3.2.3

A simpler version of your code would be:

dict(zip(names, d.values()))

If you want to keep the same structure, you can change it to:

vlst = list(d.values())
{names[i]: vlst[i] for i in range(len(names))}

(You can just as easily put list(d.values()) inside the comprehension instead of vlst; it's just wasteful to do so since it would be re-generating the list every time).

GET and POST methods with the same Action name in the same Controller

You received the good answer to this question, but I want to add my two cents. You could use one method and process requests according to request type:

public ActionResult Index()
{
    if("GET"==this.HttpContext.Request.RequestType)
    {
        Some Code--Some Code---Some Code for GET
    }
    else if("POST"==this.HttpContext.Request.RequestType)
    {
        Some Code--Some Code---Some Code for POST
    }
    else
    {
        //exception
    }

    return View();
}

Is it possible to use global variables in Rust?

You can use static variables fairly easily as long as they are thread-local.

The downside is that the object will not be visible to other threads your program might spawn. The upside is that unlike truly global state, it is entirely safe and is not a pain to use - true global state is a massive pain in any language. Here's an example:

extern mod sqlite;

use std::cell::RefCell;

thread_local!(static ODB: RefCell<sqlite::database::Database> = RefCell::new(sqlite::open("test.db"));

fn main() {
    ODB.with(|odb_cell| {
        let odb = odb_cell.borrow_mut();
        // code that uses odb goes here
    });
}

Here we create a thread-local static variable and then use it in a function. Note that it is static and immutable; this means that the address at which it resides is immutable, but thanks to RefCell the value itself will be mutable.

Unlike regular static, in thread-local!(static ...) you can create pretty much arbitrary objects, including those that require heap allocations for initialization such as Vec, HashMap and others.

If you cannot initialize the value right away, e.g. it depends on user input, you may also have to throw Option in there, in which case accessing it gets a bit unwieldy:

extern mod sqlite;

use std::cell::RefCell;

thread_local!(static ODB: RefCell<Option<sqlite::database::Database>> = RefCell::New(None));

fn main() {
    ODB.with(|odb_cell| {
        // assumes the value has already been initialized, panics otherwise
        let odb = odb_cell.borrow_mut().as_mut().unwrap();
        // code that uses odb goes here
    });
}

ASP.NET: HTTP Error 500.19 – Internal Server Error 0x8007000d

Problem solved. Here are the steps that I tried:

  • Enable the 32-bit application in IIS -> Application pool -> Advanced settings
  • Copy System.EnterpriseServices.dll and System.EnterpriseServices.Wrapper.dll from C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 to the application bin folder
  • Do comments/uncomments to sections on the web.config and found that problem related to the referenced DLL.

The config that I commented the previous one that I added:

<section name="handlers" overrideModeDefault="Allow" />
<section name="modules" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" overrideModeDefault="Allow"/>
  • Add the required FasterFlect.DLL used by Combres.DLL v2.1.0.0 to the application bin folder (shall download the full zip from Combres codeplex, because the required fasterflect DLL V2.0.3732.24338 cannot be found in fasterflect codeplex) and other DLLs. For convinience, use the full Combres.DLL (1,3MB)
  • Check that the DLL versions and public key tokens are configured correctly in web.config using tool, e.g. .NET Reflector

navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition sometimes works sometimes doesn't

I'll post this here in case it's useful to anyone…

On iOS Safari, calls to navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition would timeout if I had an active navigator.geolocation.watchPosition function running.

Starting and stopping the watchPosition properly using clearWatch() as described here, worked: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/Geolocation/watchPosition

Update div with jQuery ajax response html

Almost 5 years later, I think my answer can reduce a little bit the hard work of many people.

Update an element in the DOM with the HTML from the one from the ajax call can be achieved that way

$('#submitform').click(function() {
     $.ajax({
     url: "getinfo.asp",
     data: {
         txtsearch: $('#appendedInputButton').val()
     },
     type: "GET",
     dataType : "html",
     success: function (data){
         $('#showresults').html($('#showresults',data).html());
         // similar to $(data).find('#showresults')
     },
});

or with replaceWith()

// codes

success: function (data){
   $('#showresults').replaceWith($('#showresults',data));
},

Force Intellij IDEA to reread all maven dependencies

If you work in IntelliJ, there are four independent ways to refresh maven repositories. Each of them refreshes another local repository on your computer or refreshes them differently.

1. mvn -U clean install
2. Ctrl+Shift+A - Reimport
3. Round arrows in the Maven window

4. Ctrl+Alt+S , go to Build, Execution, Deployment | Build Tools | Maven | Repositories -choose rep - update

What is interesting, it is often said, that the last refresh is equal to the round arrows in the Maven window. But, according to my experience, they are absolutely different! The proof: Our large project fails the last refresh, but exists and runs happily without it. And double round arrows run OK on it.

Each of these four can help you with your problems or/and find problems of its own. For example, for running our real-life project only the first is necessary, but for testing in IntelliJ we also need 2 and 3. Surely, somebody needs 4, too. (Why else IntelliJ has it?)

Gradle - Move a folder from ABC to XYZ

Your task declaration is incorrectly combining the Copy task type and project.copy method, resulting in a task that has nothing to copy and thus never runs. Besides, Copy isn't the right choice for renaming a directory. There is no Gradle API for renaming, but a bit of Groovy code (leveraging Java's File API) will do. Assuming Project1 is the project directory:

task renABCToXYZ {     doLast {         file("ABC").renameTo(file("XYZ"))     } }

Looking at the bigger picture, it's probably better to add the renaming logic (i.e. the doLast task action) to the task that produces ABC.

How to underline a UILabel in swift?

Swift 5:

1- Create a String extension to get attributedText

extension String {

    var underLined: NSAttributedString {
        NSMutableAttributedString(string: self, attributes: [.underlineStyle: NSUnderlineStyle.single.rawValue])
    }

}

2- Use it

On buttons:

button.setAttributedTitle(yourButtonTitle.underLined, for: .normal)

On Labels:

label.attributedText = yourLabelTitle.underLined

How to uninstall with msiexec using product id guid without .msi file present

The good thing is, this one is really easily and deterministically to analyze: Either, the msi package is really not installed on the system or you're doing something wrong. Of course the correct call is:

msiexec /x {A4BFF20C-A21E-4720-88E5-79D5A5AEB2E8}

(Admin rights needed of course- With curly braces without any quotes here- quotes are only needed, if paths or values with blank are specified in the commandline.)
If the message is: "This action is only valid for products that are currently installed", then this is true. Either the package with this ProductCode is not installed or there is a typo.

To verify where the fault is:

  1. First try to right click on the (probably) installed .msi file itself. You will see (besides "Install" and "Repair") an Uninstall entry. Click on that.
    a) If that uninstall works, your msi has another ProductCode than you expect (maybe you have the wrong WiX source or your build has dynamic logging where the ProductCode changes).
    b) If that uninstall gives the same "...only valid for products already installed" the package is not installed (which is obviously a precondition to be able to uninstall it).

  2. If 1.a) was the case, you can look for the correct ProductCode of your package, if you open your msi file with Orca, Insted or another editor/tool. Just google for them. Look there in the table with the name "Property" and search for the string "ProductCode" in the first column. In the second column there is the correct value.

There are no other possibilities.

Just a suggestion for the used commandline: I would add at least the "/qb" for a simple progress bar or "/qn" parameter (the latter for complete silent uninstall, but makes only sense if you are sure it works).

Killing a process using Java

AFAIU java.lang.Process is the process created by java itself (like Runtime.exec('firefox'))

You can use system-dependant commands like

 Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
  if (System.getProperty("os.name").toLowerCase().indexOf("windows") > -1)
     rt.exec("taskkill " +....);
   else
     rt.exec("kill -9 " +....);

RegEx match open tags except XHTML self-contained tags

Disclaimer: use a parser if you have the option. That said...

This is the regex I use (!) to match HTML tags:

<(?:"[^"]*"['"]*|'[^']*'['"]*|[^'">])+>

It may not be perfect, but I ran this code through a lot of HTML. Note that it even catches strange things like <a name="badgenerator"">, which show up on the web.

I guess to make it not match self contained tags, you'd either want to use Kobi's negative look-behind:

<(?:"[^"]*"['"]*|'[^']*'['"]*|[^'">])+(?<!/\s*)>

or just combine if and if not.

To downvoters: This is working code from an actual product. I doubt anyone reading this page will get the impression that it is socially acceptable to use regexes on HTML.

Caveat: I should note that this regex still breaks down in the presence of CDATA blocks, comments, and script and style elements. Good news is, you can get rid of those using a regex...

How can I change column types in Spark SQL's DataFrame?

As the cast operation is available for Spark Column's (and as I personally do not favour udf's as proposed by @Svend at this point), how about:

df.select( df("year").cast(IntegerType).as("year"), ... )

to cast to the requested type? As a neat side effect, values not castable / "convertable" in that sense, will become null.

In case you need this as a helper method, use:

object DFHelper{
  def castColumnTo( df: DataFrame, cn: String, tpe: DataType ) : DataFrame = {
    df.withColumn( cn, df(cn).cast(tpe) )
  }
}

which is used like:

import DFHelper._
val df2 = castColumnTo( df, "year", IntegerType )

How to check if a date is greater than another in Java?

Parse the string into date, then compare using compareTo, before or after

Date d = new Date();
d.compareTo(anotherDate)

i.e

Date date1 = new SimpleDateFormat("MM/dd/yyyy").parse(date1string)
Date date2 = new SimpleDateFormat("MM/dd/yyyy").parse(date2string)

date1.compareTo(date2);

Copying the comment provided below by @MuhammadSaqib to complete this answer.

Returns the value 0 if the argument Date is equal to this Date; a value less than 0 if this Date is before the Date argument, and a value greater than 0 if this Date is after the Date argument. and NullPointerException - if anotherDate is null.

How to assert two list contain the same elements in Python?

Slightly faster version of the implementation (If you know that most couples lists will have different lengths):

How do I declare a model class in my Angular 2 component using TypeScript?

create model.ts in your component directory as below

export module DataModel {
       export interface DataObjectName {
         propertyName: type;
        }
       export interface DataObjectAnother {
         propertyName: type;
        }
    }

then in your component import above as, import {DataModel} from './model';

export class YourComponent {
   public DataObject: DataModel.DataObjectName;
}

your DataObject should have all the properties from DataObjectName.

Difference between private, public, and protected inheritance

Private:

The private members of a base class can only be accessed by members of that base class .

Public:

The public members of a base class can be accessed by members of that base class, members of its derived class as well as the members which are outside the base class and derived class.

Protected:

The protected members of a base class can be accessed by members of base class as well as members of its derived class.

In short:

private: base

protected: base + derived

public: base + derived + any other member

Open a file with Notepad in C#

You are not providing a lot of information, but assuming you want to open just any file on your computer with the application that is specified for the default handler for that filetype, you can use something like this:

var fileToOpen = "SomeFilePathHere";
var process = new Process();
process.StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo()
{
    UseShellExecute = true,
    FileName = fileToOpen
};

process.Start();
process.WaitForExit();

The UseShellExecute parameter tells Windows to use the default program for the type of file you are opening.

The WaitForExit will cause your application to wait until the application you luanched has been closed.

SQL Server IIF vs CASE

IIF is the same as CASE WHEN <Condition> THEN <true part> ELSE <false part> END. The query plan will be the same. It is, perhaps, "syntactical sugar" as initially implemented.

CASE is portable across all SQL platforms whereas IIF is SQL SERVER 2012+ specific.

End Function

getFilesDir() vs Environment.getDataDirectory()

Environment returns user data directory. And getFilesDir returns application data directory.

Benefits of inline functions in C++?

Advantages

  • By inlining your code where it is needed, your program will spend less time in the function call and return parts. It is supposed to make your code go faster, even as it goes larger (see below). Inlining trivial accessors could be an example of effective inlining.
  • By marking it as inline, you can put a function definition in a header file (i.e. it can be included in multiple compilation unit, without the linker complaining)

Disadvantages

  • It can make your code larger (i.e. if you use inline for non-trivial functions). As such, it could provoke paging and defeat optimizations from the compiler.
  • It slightly breaks your encapsulation because it exposes the internal of your object processing (but then, every "private" member would, too). This means you must not use inlining in a PImpl pattern.
  • It slightly breaks your encapsulation 2: C++ inlining is resolved at compile time. Which means that should you change the code of the inlined function, you would need to recompile all the code using it to be sure it will be updated (for the same reason, I avoid default values for function parameters)
  • When used in a header, it makes your header file larger, and thus, will dilute interesting informations (like the list of a class methods) with code the user don't care about (this is the reason that I declare inlined functions inside a class, but will define it in an header after the class body, and never inside the class body).

Inlining Magic

  • The compiler may or may not inline the functions you marked as inline; it may also decide to inline functions not marked as inline at compilation or linking time.
  • Inline works like a copy/paste controlled by the compiler, which is quite different from a pre-processor macro: The macro will be forcibly inlined, will pollute all the namespaces and code, won't be easily debuggable, and will be done even if the compiler would have ruled it as inefficient.
  • Every method of a class defined inside the body of the class itself is considered as "inlined" (even if the compiler can still decide to not inline it
  • Virtual methods are not supposed to be inlinable. Still, sometimes, when the compiler can know for sure the type of the object (i.e. the object was declared and constructed inside the same function body), even a virtual function will be inlined because the compiler knows exactly the type of the object.
  • Template methods/functions are not always inlined (their presence in an header will not make them automatically inline).
  • The next step after "inline" is template metaprograming . I.e. By "inlining" your code at compile time, sometimes, the compiler can deduce the final result of a function... So a complex algorithm can sometimes be reduced to a kind of return 42 ; statement. This is for me extreme inlining. It happens rarely in real life, it makes compilation time longer, will not bloat your code, and will make your code faster. But like the grail, don't try to apply it everywhere because most processing cannot be resolved this way... Still, this is cool anyway...

Binding select element to object in Angular

<h1>My Application</h1>
<select [(ngModel)]="selectedValue">
  <option *ngFor="let c of countries" [ngValue]="c">{{c.name}}</option>

StackBlitz example

NOTE: you can use [ngValue]="c" instead of [ngValue]="c.id" where c is the complete country object.

[value]="..." only supports string values
[ngValue]="..." supports any type

'LIKE ('%this%' OR '%that%') and something=else' not working

Have you tried:

(column LIKE '%this%' and something=else) or (column LIKE '%that%' and something=else)

$(document).on('click', '#id', function() {}) vs $('#id').on('click', function(){})

The first example demonstrates event delegation. The event handler is bound to an element higher up the DOM tree (in this case, the document) and will be executed when an event reaches that element having originated on an element matching the selector.

This is possible because most DOM events bubble up the tree from the point of origin. If you click on the #id element, a click event is generated that will bubble up through all of the ancestor elements (side note: there is actually a phase before this, called the 'capture phase', when the event comes down the tree to the target). You can capture the event on any of those ancestors.

The second example binds the event handler directly to the element. The event will still bubble (unless you prevent that in the handler) but since the handler is bound to the target, you won't see the effects of this process.

By delegating an event handler, you can ensure it is executed for elements that did not exist in the DOM at the time of binding. If your #id element was created after your second example, your handler would never execute. By binding to an element that you know is definitely in the DOM at the time of execution, you ensure that your handler will actually be attached to something and can be executed as appropriate later on.

Adding a legend to PyPlot in Matplotlib in the simplest manner possible

A simple plot for sine and cosine curves with a legend.

Used matplotlib.pyplot

import math
import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
x=[]
for i in range(-314,314):
    x.append(i/100)
ysin=[math.sin(i) for i in x]
ycos=[math.cos(i) for i in x]
plt.plot(x,ysin,label='sin(x)') #specify label for the corresponding curve
plt.plot(x,ycos,label='cos(x)')
plt.xticks([-3.14,-1.57,0,1.57,3.14],['-$\pi$','-$\pi$/2',0,'$\pi$/2','$\pi$'])
plt.legend()
plt.show()

C# Telnet Library

I doubt very much a telnet library will ever be part of the .Net BCL, although you do have almost full socket support so it wouldnt be too hard to emulate a telnet client, Telnet in its general implementation is a legacy and dying technology that where exists generally sits behind a nice new modern facade. In terms of Unix/Linux variants you'll find that out the box its SSH and enabling telnet is generally considered poor practice.

You could check out: http://granados.sourceforge.net/ - SSH Library for .Net http://www.tamirgal.com/home/dev.aspx?Item=SharpSsh

You'll still need to put in place your own wrapper to handle events for feeding in input in a scripted manner.

The zip() function in Python 3

The zip() function in Python 3 returns an iterator. That is the reason why when you print test1 you get - <zip object at 0x1007a06c8>. From documentation -

Make an iterator that aggregates elements from each of the iterables.

But once you do - list(test1) - you have exhausted the iterator. So after that anytime you do list(test1) would only result in empty list.

In case of test2, you have already created the list once, test2 is a list, and hence it will always be that list.

getting file size in javascript

If it's not a local application powered by JavaScript with full access permissions, you can't get the size of any file just from the path name. Web pages running javascript do not have access to the local filesystem for security reasons.

You can use a graceful degrading file uploader like SWFUpload if you want to show a progress bar. HTML5 also has the File API, but that is not widely supported just yet. If a user selects the file for an input[type=file] element, you can get details about the file from the files collection:

alert(myInp.files[0].size);

How can I change the version of npm using nvm?

I had same issue after installing nvm-windows on top of existing Node installation. Solution was just to follow the instructions:

You should also delete the existing npm install location (e.g. "C:\Users\AppData\Roaming\npm") so that the nvm install location will be correctly used instead.

Selenium WebDriver: Wait for complex page with JavaScript to load

Does the JS library define/initialize any well known variable on the window?

If so you could wait for the variable to appear. You can use

((JavascriptExecutor)driver).executeScript(String script, Object... args)

to test for this condition (something like: window.SomeClass && window.SomeClass.variable != null) and return a boolean true / false.

Wrap this in a WebDriverWait, and wait until the script returns true.

How to clear https proxy setting of NPM?

ok, "NPM config delete ..." is the right command for Windows environment, viceversa "NPM config rm ..." it is for Unix-like environment. Moreover, at least for me, it was mandatory to add the option "-g" because the command worked properly

asterisk : Unable to connect to remote asterisk (does /var/run/asterisk.ctl exist?)

actually it's an ownership problem

try to:

ls -l /var/run/asterisk/asterisk.ctl

you will see that the file has ownership of 'root'

although you have changed the ownership with:

chown -R asterisk /var/run/asterisk

once you restart the asterisk server the ownership gets back to the 'root' again

they should be for 'asterisk:asterisk' user and group

Posting raw image data as multipart/form-data in curl

In case anyone had the same problem: check this as @PravinS suggested. I used the exact same code as shown there and it worked for me perfectly.

This is the relevant part of the server code that helped:

if (isset($_POST['btnUpload']))
{
$url = "URL_PATH of upload.php"; // e.g. http://localhost/myuploader/upload.php // request URL
$filename = $_FILES['file']['name'];
$filedata = $_FILES['file']['tmp_name'];
$filesize = $_FILES['file']['size'];
if ($filedata != '')
{
    $headers = array("Content-Type:multipart/form-data"); // cURL headers for file uploading
    $postfields = array("filedata" => "@$filedata", "filename" => $filename);
    $ch = curl_init();
    $options = array(
        CURLOPT_URL => $url,
        CURLOPT_HEADER => true,
        CURLOPT_POST => 1,
        CURLOPT_HTTPHEADER => $headers,
        CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS => $postfields,
        CURLOPT_INFILESIZE => $filesize,
        CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER => true
    ); // cURL options
    curl_setopt_array($ch, $options);
    curl_exec($ch);
    if(!curl_errno($ch))
    {
        $info = curl_getinfo($ch);
        if ($info['http_code'] == 200)
            $errmsg = "File uploaded successfully";
    }
    else
    {
        $errmsg = curl_error($ch);
    }
    curl_close($ch);
}
else
{
    $errmsg = "Please select the file";
}
}

html form should look something like:

<form action="uploadpost.php" method="post" name="frmUpload" enctype="multipart/form-data">
<tr>
  <td>Upload</td>
  <td align="center">:</td>
  <td><input name="file" type="file" id="file"/></td>

  <td align="center">&nbsp;</td>
  <td><input name="btnUpload" type="submit" value="Upload" /></td>

How to strip HTML tags from string in JavaScript?

Using the browser's parser is the probably the best bet in current browsers. The following will work, with the following caveats:

  • Your HTML is valid within a <div> element. HTML contained within <body> or <html> or <head> tags is not valid within a <div> and may therefore not be parsed correctly.
  • textContent (the DOM standard property) and innerText (non-standard) properties are not identical. For example, textContent will include text within a <script> element while innerText will not (in most browsers). This only affects IE <=8, which is the only major browser not to support textContent.
  • The HTML does not contain <script> elements.
  • The HTML is not null
  • The HTML comes from a trusted source. Using this with arbitrary HTML allows arbitrary untrusted JavaScript to be executed. This example is from a comment by Mike Samuel on the duplicate question: <img onerror='alert(\"could run arbitrary JS here\")' src=bogus>

Code:

var html = "<p>Some HTML</p>";
var div = document.createElement("div");
div.innerHTML = html;
var text = div.textContent || div.innerText || "";

How to fix the height of a <div> element?

If you want to keep the height of the DIV absolute, regardless of the amount of text inside use the following:

overflow: hidden;

Recommended way to get hostname in Java

Although this topic has already been answered there's more to say.

First of all: Clearly we need some definitions here. The InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName() gives you the name of the host as seen from a network perspective. The problems with this approach are well documented in the other answers: it often requires a DNS lookup, it's ambiguous if the host has multiple network interfaces and it just plain fails sometimes (see below).

But on any OS there's another name as well. A name of the host that gets defined very early in the boot process, long before the network is initialized. Windows refers to this as computername, Linux calls it kernel hostname and Solaris uses the word nodename. I like best the word computername, so I'll use that word from now on.

Finding the computername

  • On Linux/Unix the computername is what you get from the C function gethostname(), or hostname command from shell or HOSTNAME environment variable in Bash-like shells.

  • On Windows the computername is what you get from environment variable COMPUTERNAME or Win32 GetComputerName function.

Java has no way of obtaining what I've defined as 'computername'. Sure, there are workarounds as described in other answers, like for Windows calling System.getenv("COMPUTERNAME"), but on Unix/Linux there's no good workaround without resorting to JNI/JNA or Runtime.exec(). If you don't mind a JNI/JNA solution then there's gethostname4j which is dead simple and very easy to use.

Let's move on with two examples, one from Linux and one from Solaris, which demonstrate how you can easily get into a situation where you cannot obtain the computername using standard Java methods.

Linux example

On a newly created system, where the host during installation has been named as 'chicago', we now change the so-called kernel hostname:

$ hostnamectl --static set-hostname dallas

Now the kernel hostname is 'dallas', as evident from the hostname command:

$ hostname
dallas

But we still have

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1   localhost
127.0.0.1   chicago

There's no misconfiguration in this. It just means the host's networked name (or rather the name of the loopback interface) is different from the host's computername.

Now, try executing InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName() and it will throw java.net.UnknownHostException. You are basically stuck. There's no way to retrieve neither the value 'dallas' nor the value 'chicago'.

Solaris example

The example below is based on Solaris 11.3.

The host has deliberately been configured so that the loopback name <> nodename.

In other words we have:

$ svccfg -s system/identity:node listprop config
...
...
config/loopback             astring        chicago
config/nodename             astring        dallas

and the contents of /etc/hosts :

:1 chicago localhost
127.0.0.1 chicago localhost loghost

and the result of the hostname command would be:

$ hostname
dallas

Just like in the Linux example a call to InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName() will fail with

java.net.UnknownHostException: dallas: dallas: node name or service name not known

Just like the Linux example you are now stuck. There's no way to retrieve neither the value 'dallas' nor the value 'chicago'.

When will you really struggle with this?

Very often you'll find that InetAddress.getLocalHost().getHostName() will indeed return a value which is equal to the computername. So there's no problem (except for the added overhead of name resolution).

The problem arises typically within PaaS environments where there's a difference between computername and the name of the loopback interface. For example people report problems in Amazon EC2.

Bug/RFE reports

A bit of searching reveals this RFE report : link1, link2. However, judging from the comments on that report the issue seems to have been largely misunderstood by the JDK team, so it is unlikely it will be addressed.

I like the comparison in the RFE to other programming languages.

Can the Twitter Bootstrap Carousel plugin fade in and out on slide transition

Note: If you are using Bootstrap + AngularJS + UI Bootstrap, .left .right and .next classes are never added. Using the example at the following link and the CSS from Robert McKee answer works. I wanted to comment because it took 3 days to find a full solution. Hope this helps others!

https://angular-ui.github.io/bootstrap/#/carousel

Code snip from UI Bootstrap Demo at the above link.

angular.module('ui.bootstrap.demo').controller('CarouselDemoCtrl', function ($scope) {
  $scope.myInterval = 5000;
  var slides = $scope.slides = [];
  $scope.addSlide = function() {
    var newWidth = 600 + slides.length + 1;
    slides.push({
      image: 'http://placekitten.com/' + newWidth + '/300',
      text: ['More','Extra','Lots of','Surplus'][slides.length % 4] + ' ' +
        ['Cats', 'Kittys', 'Felines', 'Cutes'][slides.length % 4]
    });
  };
  for (var i=0; i<4; i++) {
    $scope.addSlide();
  }
});

Html From UI Bootstrap, Notice I added the .fade class to the example.

<div ng-controller="CarouselDemoCtrl">
    <div style="height: 305px">
        <carousel class="fade" interval="myInterval">
          <slide ng-repeat="slide in slides" active="slide.active">
            <img ng-src="{{slide.image}}" style="margin:auto;">
            <div class="carousel-caption">
              <h4>Slide {{$index}}</h4>
              <p>{{slide.text}}</p>
            </div>
          </slide>
        </carousel>
    </div>
</div>

CSS from Robert McKee's answer above

.carousel.fade {
opacity: 1;
}
.carousel.fade .item {
-moz-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
-o-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
-webkit-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
left: 0 !important;
opacity: 0;
top:0;
position:absolute;
width: 100%;
display:block !important;
z-index:1;
}
.carousel.fade .item:first-child {
top:auto;
position:relative;
}
.carousel.fade .item.active {
opacity: 1;
-moz-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
-o-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
-webkit-transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
transition: opacity ease-in-out .7s;
z-index:2;
}
/*
Added z-index to raise the left right controls to the top
*/
.carousel-control {

Invalid shorthand property initializer

Use : instead of =

see the example below that gives an error

app.post('/mews', (req, res) => {
if (isValidMew(req.body)) {
    // insert into db
    const mew = {
        name = filter.clean(req.body.name.toString()),
        content = filter.clean(req.body.content.toString()),
        created: new Date()
    };

That gives Syntex Error: invalid shorthand proprty initializer.

Then i replace = with : that's solve this error.

app.post('/mews', (req, res) => {
if (isValidMew(req.body)) {
    // insert into db
    const mew = {
        name: filter.clean(req.body.name.toString()),
        content: filter.clean(req.body.content.toString()),
        created: new Date()
    };

Simple linked list in C++

I think that, to make sure the indeep linkage of each node in the list, the addNode method must be like this:

void addNode(struct node *head, int n) {
  if (head->Next == NULL) {
    struct node *NewNode = new node;
    NewNode->value = n;
    NewNode->Next = NULL;
    head->Next = NewNode;
  }
  else
    addNode(head->Next, n);
}

What is the role of "Flatten" in Keras?

Here I would like to present another alternative to Flatten function. This may help to understand what is going on internally. The alternative method adds three more code lines. Instead of using

#==========================================Build a Model
model = tf.keras.models.Sequential()

model.add(keras.layers.Flatten(input_shape=(28, 28, 3)))#reshapes to (2352)=28x28x3
model.add(layers.experimental.preprocessing.Rescaling(1./255))#normalize
model.add(keras.layers.Dense(128,activation=tf.nn.relu))
model.add(keras.layers.Dense(2,activation=tf.nn.softmax))

model.build()
model.summary()# summary of the model

we can use

    #==========================================Build a Model
    tensor = tf.keras.backend.placeholder(dtype=tf.float32, shape=(None, 28, 28, 3))

    model = tf.keras.models.Sequential()

    model.add(keras.layers.InputLayer(input_tensor=tensor))
    model.add(keras.layers.Reshape([2352]))
model.add(layers.experimental.preprocessing.Rescaling(1./255))#normalize
    model.add(keras.layers.Dense(128,activation=tf.nn.relu))
    model.add(keras.layers.Dense(2,activation=tf.nn.softmax))

    model.build()
    model.summary()# summary of the model

In the second case, we first create a tensor (using a placeholder) and then create an Input layer. After, we reshape the tensor to flat form. So basically,

Create tensor->Create InputLayer->Reshape == Flatten

Flatten is a convenient function, doing all this automatically. Of course both ways has its specific use cases. Keras provides enough flexibility to manipulate the way you want to create a model.

How to fix getImageData() error The canvas has been tainted by cross-origin data?

As others have said you are "tainting" the canvas by loading from a cross origins domain.

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/HTML/CORS_Enabled_Image

However, you may be able to prevent this by simply setting:

img.crossOrigin = "Anonymous";

This only works if the remote server sets the following header appropriately:

Access-Control-Allow-Origin "*"

The Dropbox file chooser when using the "direct link" option is a great example of this. I use it on oddprints.com to hoover up images from the remote dropbox image url, into my canvas, and then submit the image data back into my server. All in javascript

difference between primary key and unique key

Unique Key (UK): It's a column or a group of columns that can identify a uniqueness in a row.

Primary Key (PK): It's also a column or group of columns that can identify a uniqueness in a row.

So the Primary key is just another name for unique key, but the default implementation in SQL Server is different for Primary and Unique Key.

By Default:

  1. PK creates a Clustered index and UK creates a Non Clustered Index.
  2. PK is not null, but UK allows nulls (Note: By Default)
  3. There can only be one and only one PK on a table, but there can be multiple UK's
  4. You can override the default implementation depending upon your need.

It really depends what is your aim when deciding whether to create a UK or PK. It follows an analogy like "If there is a team of three people, so all of them are peers, but there will be one of them who will be a pair of peers: PK and UK has similar relation.". I would suggest reading this article: The example given by the author may not seem suitable, but try to get an overall idea.

jquery loop on Json data using $.each

getJSON will evaluate the data to JSON for you, as long as the correct content-type is used. Make sure that the server is returning the data as application/json.

Rebase feature branch onto another feature branch

I know you asked to Rebase, but I'd Cherry-Pick the commits I wanted to move from Branch2 to Branch1 instead. That way, I wouldn't need to care about when which branch was created from master, and I'd have more control over the merging.

a -- b -- c                  <-- Master
     \     \
      \     d -- e -- f -- g <-- Branch1 (Cherry-Pick f & g)
       \
        f -- g               <-- Branch2

fork: retry: Resource temporarily unavailable

Another possibility is too many threads. We just ran into this error message when running a test harness against an app that uses a thread pool. We used

watch -n 5 -d "ps -eL <java_pid> | wc -l"

to watch the ongoing count of Linux native threads running within the given Java process ID. After this hit about 1,000 (for us--YMMV), we started getting the error message you mention.

pip: no module named _internal

Are you using python2 or python3? The following commands could be different!

  1. run python3 -m pip --version to see if you have pip installed.
  2. if yes, run python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip.
  3. if no, run sudo apt-get install python3-pip, and do it again.

Assign multiple values to array in C

With code like this:

const int node_ct = 8;
const int expected[node_ct] = { 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 };

And in the configure.ac

AC_PROG_CC_C99

The compiler on my dev box was happy. The compiler on the server complained with:

error: variable-sized object may not be initialized
   const int expected[node_ct] = { 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 };

and

warning: excess elements in array initializer
   const int expected[node_ct] = { 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8 };

for each element

It doesn't complain at all about, for example:

int expected[] = { 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 };

however, I decided that I like the check on size.

Rather than fighting, I went with a varargs initializer:

#include <stdarg.h>

void int_array_init(int *a, const int ct, ...) {
  va_list args;
  va_start(args, ct);
  for(int i = 0; i < ct; ++i) {
    a[i] = va_arg(args, int);
  }
  va_end(args);
}

called like,

const int node_ct = 8;
int expected[node_ct];
int_array_init(expected, node_ct, 1, 3, 4, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8);

As such, the varargs support is more robust than the support for the array initializer.

Someone might be able to do something like this in a macro.

Find PR with sample code at https://github.com/wbreeze/davenport/pull/15/files

Regarding https://stackoverflow.com/a/3535455/608359 from @paxdiablo, I liked it; but, felt insecure about having the number of times the initializaion pointer advances synchronized with the number of elements allocated to the array. Worst case, the initializing pointer moves beyond the allocated length. As such, the diff in the PR contains,

  int expected[node_ct];
- int *p = expected;
- *p++ = 1; *p++ = 2; *p++ = 3; *p++ = 4;
+ int_array_init(expected, node_ct, 1, 2, 3, 4);

The int_array_init method will safely assign junk if the number of arguments is fewer than the node_ct. The junk assignment ought to be easier to catch and debug.

How to sum up elements of a C++ vector?

Nobody seems to address the case of summing elements of a vector that can have NaN values in it, e.g. numerical_limits<double>::quite_NaN()

I usually loop through the elements and bluntly check.

vector<double> x;

//...

size_t n = x.size();

double sum = 0;

for (size_t i = 0; i < n; i++){

  sum += (x[i] == x[i] ? x[i] : 0);

}

It's not fancy at all, i.e. no iterators or any other tricks but I this is how I do it. Some times if there are other things to do inside the loop and I want the code to be more readable I write

double val = x[i];

sum += (val == val ? val : 0);

//...

inside the loop and re-use val if needed.

Redirecting to a certain route based on condition

Here is maybe a more elegant and flexible solution with 'resolve' configuration property and 'promises' enabling eventual data loading on routing and routing rules depending on data.

You specify a function in 'resolve' in routing config and in the function load and check data, do all redirects. If you need to load data, you return a promise, if you need to do redirect - reject promise before that. All details can be found on $routerProvider and $q documentation pages.

'use strict';

var app = angular.module('app', [])
    .config(['$routeProvider', function($routeProvider) {
        $routeProvider
            .when('/', {
                templateUrl: "login.html",
                controller: LoginController
            })
            .when('/private', {
                templateUrl: "private.html",
                controller: PrivateController,
                resolve: {
                    factory: checkRouting
                }
            })
            .when('/private/anotherpage', {
                templateUrl:"another-private.html",
                controller: AnotherPriveController,
                resolve: {
                    factory: checkRouting
                }
            })
            .otherwise({ redirectTo: '/' });
    }]);

var checkRouting= function ($q, $rootScope, $location) {
    if ($rootScope.userProfile) {
        return true;
    } else {
        var deferred = $q.defer();
        $http.post("/loadUserProfile", { userToken: "blah" })
            .success(function (response) {
                $rootScope.userProfile = response.userProfile;
                deferred.resolve(true);
            })
            .error(function () {
                deferred.reject();
                $location.path("/");
             });
        return deferred.promise;
    }
};

Should I use Java's String.format() if performance is important?

To expand/correct on the first answer above, it's not translation that String.format would help with, actually.
What String.format will help with is when you're printing a date/time (or a numeric format, etc), where there are localization(l10n) differences (ie, some countries will print 04Feb2009 and others will print Feb042009).
With translation, you're just talking about moving any externalizable strings (like error messages and what-not) into a property bundle so that you can use the right bundle for the right language, using ResourceBundle and MessageFormat.

Looking at all the above, I'd say that performance-wise, String.format vs. plain concatenation comes down to what you prefer. If you prefer looking at calls to .format over concatenation, then by all means, go with that.
After all, code is read a lot more than it's written.

Convert 24 Hour time to 12 Hour plus AM/PM indication Oracle SQL

For the 24-hour time, you need to use HH24 instead of HH.

For the 12-hour time, the AM/PM indicator is written as A.M. (if you want periods in the result) or AM (if you don't). For example:

SELECT invoice_date,
       TO_CHAR(invoice_date, 'DD-MM-YYYY HH24:MI:SS') "Date 24Hr",
       TO_CHAR(invoice_date, 'DD-MM-YYYY HH:MI:SS AM') "Date 12Hr"
  FROM invoices
;

For more information on the format models you can use with TO_CHAR on a date, see http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E16655_01/server.121/e17750/ch4datetime.htm#NLSPG004.

How to set cookie value with AJAX request?

Basically, ajax request as well as synchronous request sends your document cookies automatically. So, you need to set your cookie to document, not to request. However, your request is cross-domain, and things became more complicated. Basing on this answer, additionally to set document cookie, you should allow its sending to cross-domain environment:

type: "GET",
url: "http://example.com",
cache: false,
// NO setCookies option available, set cookie to document
//setCookies: "lkfh89asdhjahska7al446dfg5kgfbfgdhfdbfgcvbcbc dfskljvdfhpl",
crossDomain: true,
dataType: 'json',
xhrFields: {
    withCredentials: true
},
success: function (data) {
    alert(data);
});

How to programmatically set the SSLContext of a JAX-WS client?

The above is fine (as I said in comment) unless your WSDL is accessible with https:// too.

Here is my workaround for this:

Set you SSLSocketFactory as default:

HttpsURLConnection.setDefaultSSLSocketFactory(...);

For Apache CXF which I use you need also add these lines to your config:

<http-conf:conduit name="*.http-conduit">
  <http-conf:tlsClientParameters useHttpsURLConnectionDefaultSslSocketFactory="true" />
<http-conf:conduit>

Strip double quotes from a string in .NET

If you only want to strip the quotes from the ends of the string (not the middle), and there is a chance that there can be spaces at either end of the string (i.e. parsing a CSV format file where there is a space after the commas), then you need to call the Trim function twice...for example:

string myStr = " \"sometext\"";     //(notice the leading space)
myStr = myStr.Trim('"'); //(would leave the first quote: "sometext)
myStr = myStr.Trim().Trim('"'); //(would get what you want: sometext)

Session 'app' error while installing APK

Looking at the error message, Android Studio tried to install older version of apk (lets say 0.5.1) while current version is lets say 0.5.2. Android Studio builds 0.5.2 but tries to install 0.5.1 for some reason.

I have turned off Instant Run, invalidated and restarted, rebuilt project and didn't help.

Solution worked for me is to uninstall the app, then change the current branch on VCS to some other branch. Then come again to latest branch and Rebuilt, Install the APK again.

More elegant "ps aux | grep -v grep"

You could use preg_split instead of explode and split on [ ]+ (one or more spaces). But I think in this case you could go with preg_match_all and capturing:

preg_match_all('/[ ]php[ ]+\S+[ ]+(\S+)/', $input, $matches);
$result = $matches[1];

The pattern matches a space, php, more spaces, a string of non-spaces (the path), more spaces, and then captures the next string of non-spaces. The first space is mostly to ensure that you don't match php as part of a user name but really only as a command.

An alternative to capturing is the "keep" feature of PCRE. If you use \K in the pattern, everything before it is discarded in the match:

preg_match_all('/[ ]php[ ]+\S+[ ]+\K\S+/', $input, $matches);
$result = $matches[0];

I would use preg_match(). I do something similar for many of my system management scripts. Here is an example:

$test = "user     12052  0.2  0.1 137184 13056 ?        Ss   10:00   0:00 php /home/user/public_html/utilities/runProcFile.php cust1 cron

root     12068  0.0  0.0 106088  1164 pts/1    S+   10:00   0:00 sh -c ps aux | grep utilities > /home/user/public_html/logs/dashboard/currentlyPosting.txt
root     12070  0.0  0.0 103240   828 pts/1    R+   10:00   0:00 grep utilities";

$lines = explode("\n", $test);

foreach($lines as $line){
        if(preg_match("/.php[\s+](cust[\d]+)[\s+]cron/i", $line, $matches)){
                print_r($matches);
        }

}

The above prints:

Array
(
    [0] => .php cust1 cron
    [1] => cust1
)
Array
(
    [0] => .php cust3 cron
    [1] => cust3
)
Array
(
    [0] => .php cust4 cron
    [1] => cust4
)
Array
(
    [0] => .php cust89 cron
    [1] => cust89
)
Array
(
    [0] => .php cust435 cron
    [1] => cust435
)
Array
(
    [0] => .php cust16 cron
    [1] => cust16
)

You can set $test to equal the output from exec. the values you are looking for would be in the if statement under the foreach. $matches[1] will have the custx value.

How to post ASP.NET MVC Ajax form using JavaScript rather than submit button

I've tried a few times to get the ajax form submit working nicely, but always met with either complete failure or too many compromises. Here's an example of page that uses the jQuery Form plug-in inside of a MVC page to update a list of projects (using a partially rendered control) as the user types in an input box:

<div class="searchBar">
    <form action="<%= Url.Action ("SearchByName") %>" method="get" class="searchSubmitForm">
        <label for="projectName">Search:</label>
        <%= Html.TextBox ("projectName") %>
        <input class="submit" type="submit" value="Search" />
    </form>
</div>
<div id="projectList">
    <% Html.RenderPartial ("ProjectList", Model); %>
</div>

<script type="text/javascript">
    jQuery(document).ready(function() {
        jQuery("#projectName").keyup(function() {
            jQuery(".searchSubmitForm").submit();
        });

        jQuery(".searchSubmitForm").submit(function() {
            var options = {
                target : '#projectList'
            }

            jQuery(this).ajaxSubmit(options);

            return false;
        });

        // We remove the submit button here - good Javascript depreciation technique
        jQuery(".submit").remove();
    });
</script>

And on the controller side:

public ActionResult SearchByName (string projectName)
{
    var service = Factory.GetService<IProjectService> ();
    var result = service.GetProjects (projectName);

    if (Request.IsAjaxRequest ())
        return PartialView ("ProjectList", result);
    else
    {
        TempData["Result"] = result;
        TempData["SearchCriteria"] = projectName;

        return RedirectToAction ("Index");
    }
}

public ActionResult Index ()
{
    IQueryable<Project> projects;
    if (TempData["Result"] != null)
        projects = (IQueryable<Project>)TempData["Result"];
    else
    {
        var service = Factory.GetService<IProjectService> ();
        projects = service.GetProjects ();
    }

    ViewData["projectName"] = TempData["SearchCriteria"];

    return View (projects);
}

How to read file binary in C#?

Generally, I don't really see a possible way to do this. I've exhausted all of the options that the earlier comments gave you, and they don't seem to work. You could try this:

        `private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
    {
        Stream myStream = null;
        OpenFileDialog openFileDialog1 = new OpenFileDialog();
        openFileDialog1.InitialDirectory = "This PC\\Documents";
        openFileDialog1.Filter = "All Files (*.*)|*.*";
        openFileDialog1.FilterIndex = 1;
        openFileDialog1.RestoreDirectory = true;
        openFileDialog1.Title = "Open a file with code";

        if (openFileDialog1.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK)
        {
            string exeCode = string.Empty;
            using (BinaryReader br = new BinaryReader(File.OpenRead(openFileDialog1.FileName))) //Sets a new integer to the BinaryReader
            {
                br.BaseStream.Seek(0x4D, SeekOrigin.Begin); //The seek is starting from 0x4D
                exeCode = Encoding.UTF8.GetString(br.ReadBytes(1000000000)); //Reads as many bytes as it can from the beginning of the .exe file
            }
            using (BinaryReader br = new BinaryReader(File.OpenRead(openFileDialog1.FileName)))
                br.Close(); //Closes the BinaryReader. Without it, opening the file with any other command will result the error "This file is being used by another process".

            richTextBox1.Text = exeCode;
        }
    }`
  • That's the code for the "Open..." button, but here's the code for the "Save..." button:

    ` private void button2_Click(object sender, EventArgs e) { SaveFileDialog save = new SaveFileDialog();

        save.Filter = "All Files (*.*)|*.*";
        save.Title = "Save Your Changes";
        save.InitialDirectory = "This PC\\Documents";
        save.FilterIndex = 1;

        if (save.ShowDialog() == DialogResult.OK)
        {

            using (BinaryWriter bw = new BinaryWriter(File.OpenWrite(save.FileName))) //Sets a new integer to the BinaryReader
            {
                bw.BaseStream.Seek(0x4D, SeekOrigin.Begin); //The seek is starting from 0x4D
                bw.Write(richTextBox1.Text);
            }
        }
    }`

    • That's the save button. This works fine, but only shows the '!This cannot be run in DOS-Mode!' - Otherwise, if you can fix this, I don't know what to do.

How to switch to other branch in Source Tree to commit the code?

Hi I'm also relatively new but I can give you basic help.

  1. To switch to another branch use "Checkout". Just click on your branch and then on the button "checkout" at the top.

UPDATE 12.01.2016:

The bold line is the current branch.

You can also just double click a branch to use checkout.

  1. Your first answer I think depends on the repository you use (like github or bitbucket). Maybe the "Show hosted repository"-Button can help you (Left panel, bottom, right button = database with cog)

Hope this is of any use.

Android Bitmap to Base64 String

use following method to convert bitmap to byte array:

ByteArrayOutputStream byteArrayOutputStream = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
bitmap.compress(Bitmap.CompressFormat.PNG, 100, byteArrayOutputStream);
byte[] byteArray = byteArrayOutputStream .toByteArray();

to encode base64 from byte array use following method

String encoded = Base64.encodeToString(byteArray, Base64.DEFAULT);

Prevent jQuery UI dialog from setting focus to first textbox

As mentioned, this is a known bug with jQuery UI and should be fixed relatively soon. Until then...

Here's another option, so you don't have to mess with tabindex:

Disable the datepicker temporarily until the dialog box opens:

dialog.find(".datepicker").datepicker("disable");
dialog.dialog({
    "open": function() {$(this).find(".datepicker").datepicker("enable");},
});

Works for me.

What is the connection string for localdb for version 11

I had the same problem for a bit. I noticed that I had:

Data Source= (localdb)\v11.0"

Simply by adding one back-slash it solved the problem for me:

Data Source= (localdb)\\v11.0"

Making custom right-click context menus for my web-app

The browser's context menu is being overridden. There is no way to augment the native context menu in any major browser.

Since the plugin is creating its own menu, the only part thats really being abstracted is the browser's context menu event. The plugin creates an html menu based on your configuration, then places that content at the location of your click.

Yes, this is the only way to go about creating a custom context menu. Obviously, different plugins do things slightly different, but they will all override the browser's event and place their own html-based menu in the correct place.

How to use router.navigateByUrl and router.navigate in Angular

navigateByUrl

routerLink directive as used like this:

<a [routerLink]="/inbox/33/messages/44">Open Message 44</a>

is just a wrapper around imperative navigation using router and its navigateByUrl method:

router.navigateByUrl('/inbox/33/messages/44')

as can be seen from the sources:

export class RouterLink {
  ...

  @HostListener('click')
  onClick(): boolean {
    ...
    this.router.navigateByUrl(this.urlTree, extras);
    return true;
  }

So wherever you need to navigate a user to another route, just inject the router and use navigateByUrl method:

class MyComponent {
   constructor(router: Router) {
      this.router.navigateByUrl(...);
   }
}

navigate

There's another method on the router that you can use - navigate:

router.navigate(['/inbox/33/messages/44'])

difference between the two

Using router.navigateByUrl is similar to changing the location bar directly–we are providing the “whole” new URL. Whereas router.navigate creates a new URL by applying an array of passed-in commands, a patch, to the current URL.

To see the difference clearly, imagine that the current URL is '/inbox/11/messages/22(popup:compose)'.

With this URL, calling router.navigateByUrl('/inbox/33/messages/44') will result in '/inbox/33/messages/44'. But calling it with router.navigate(['/inbox/33/messages/44']) will result in '/inbox/33/messages/44(popup:compose)'.

What do $? $0 $1 $2 mean in shell script?

They are called the Positional Parameters.

3.4.1 Positional Parameters

A positional parameter is a parameter denoted by one or more digits, other than the single digit 0. Positional parameters are assigned from the shell’s arguments when it is invoked, and may be reassigned using the set builtin command. Positional parameter N may be referenced as ${N}, or as $N when N consists of a single digit. Positional parameters may not be assigned to with assignment statements. The set and shift builtins are used to set and unset them (see Shell Builtin Commands). The positional parameters are temporarily replaced when a shell function is executed (see Shell Functions).

When a positional parameter consisting of more than a single digit is expanded, it must be enclosed in braces.

Best way to detect when a user leaves a web page?

I know this question has been answered, but in case you only want something to trigger when the actual BROWSER is closed, and not just when a pageload occurs, you can use this code:

window.onbeforeunload = function (e) {
        if ((window.event.clientY < 0)) {
            //window.localStorage.clear();
            //alert("Y coords: " + window.event.clientY)
        }
};

In my example, I am clearing local storage and alerting the user with the mouses y coords, only when the browser is closed, this will be ignored on all page loads from within the program.

AES vs Blowfish for file encryption

The algorithm choice probably doesn't matter that much. I'd use AES since it's been better researched. What's much more important is choosing the right operation mode and key derivation function.

You might want to take a look at the TrueCrypt format specification for inspiration if you want fast random access. If you don't need random access than XTS isn't the optimal mode, since it has weaknesses other modes don't. And you might want to add some kind of integrity check(or message authentication code) too.

INSTALL_FAILED_MISSING_SHARED_LIBRARY error in Android

You can solve it be running on Google API emulator.

To run on Google API emulator, open your Android SDK & AVD Manager > Available packages > Google Repos > select those Google API levels that you need to test on.

After installing them, add them as virtual device and run.

Node JS Promise.all and forEach

Here's a simple example using reduce. It runs serially, maintains insertion order, and does not require Bluebird.

/**
 *
 * @param items An array of items.
 * @param fn A function that accepts an item from the array and returns a promise.
 * @returns {Promise}
 */
function forEachPromise(items, fn) {
    return items.reduce(function (promise, item) {
        return promise.then(function () {
            return fn(item);
        });
    }, Promise.resolve());
}

And use it like this:

var items = ['a', 'b', 'c'];

function logItem(item) {
    return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
        process.nextTick(() => {
            console.log(item);
            resolve();
        })
    });
}

forEachPromise(items, logItem).then(() => {
    console.log('done');
});

We have found it useful to send an optional context into loop. The context is optional and shared by all iterations.

function forEachPromise(items, fn, context) {
    return items.reduce(function (promise, item) {
        return promise.then(function () {
            return fn(item, context);
        });
    }, Promise.resolve());
}

Your promise function would look like this:

function logItem(item, context) {
    return new Promise((resolve, reject) => {
        process.nextTick(() => {
            console.log(item);
            context.itemCount++;
            resolve();
        })
    });
}

How do I return the SQL data types from my query?

You can also use...

SQL_VARIANT_PROPERTY()

...in cases where you don't have direct access to the metadata (e.g. a linked server query perhaps?).

In SQL Server 2005 and beyond you are better off using the catalog views (sys.columns) as opposed to INFORMATION_SCHEMA. Unless portability to other platforms is important. Just keep in mind that the INFORMATION_SCHEMA views won't change and so they will progressively be lacking information on new features etc. in successive versions of SQL Server.

Could not load file or assembly "System.Net.Http, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"

You can fix this by upgrading your project to .NET Framework 4.7.2. This was answered by Alex Ghiondea - MSFT. Please go upvote him as he truly deserves it!

This is documented as a known issue in .NET Framework 4.7.1.

As a workaround you can add these targets to your project. They will remove the DesignFacadesToFilter from the list of references passed to SGEN (and add them back once SGEN is done)

<Target Name="RemoveDesignTimeFacadesBeforeSGen" BeforeTargets="GenerateSerializationAssemblies">
  <ItemGroup>
    <DesignFacadesToFilter Include="System.IO.Compression.ZipFile" />
    <_FilterOutFromReferencePath Include="@(_DesignTimeFacadeAssemblies_Names->'%(OriginalIdentity)')"
        Condition="'@(DesignFacadesToFilter)' == '@(_DesignTimeFacadeAssemblies_Names)' and '%(Identity)' != ''" />
    <ReferencePath Remove="@(_FilterOutFromReferencePath)" />
  </ItemGroup>
  <Message Importance="normal" Text="Removing DesignTimeFacades from ReferencePath before running SGen." /> </Target>

<Target Name="ReAddDesignTimeFacadesBeforeSGen" AfterTargets="GenerateSerializationAssemblies">
  <ItemGroup>
    <ReferencePath Include="@(_FilterOutFromReferencePath)" />
  </ItemGroup>
  <Message Importance="normal" Text="Adding back DesignTimeFacades from ReferencePath now that SGen has ran." />
</Target>

Another option (machine wide) is to add the following binding redirect to sgen.exe.config:

<runtime>
  <assemblyBinding xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1">
    <dependentAssembly>
      <assemblyIdentity name="System.IO.Compression.ZipFile" publicKeyToken="b77a5c561934e089" culture="neutral" />
      <bindingRedirect oldVersion="0.0.0.0-4.2.0.0" newVersion="4.0.0.0" />
    </dependentAssembly>
  </assemblyBinding>
</runtime> This will only work on machines with .NET Framework 4.7.1. installed. Once .NET Framework 4.7.2 is installed on that machine, this workaround should be removed.

Appending pandas dataframes generated in a for loop

Use pd.concat to merge a list of DataFrame into a single big DataFrame.

appended_data = []
for infile in glob.glob("*.xlsx"):
    data = pandas.read_excel(infile)
    # store DataFrame in list
    appended_data.append(data)
# see pd.concat documentation for more info
appended_data = pd.concat(appended_data)
# write DataFrame to an excel sheet
appended_data.to_excel('appended.xlsx')

Update query with PDO and MySQL

This has nothing to do with using PDO, it's just that you are confusing INSERT and UPDATE.

Here's the difference:

  • INSERT creates a new row. I'm guessing that you really want to create a new row.
  • UPDATE changes the values in an existing row, but if this is what you're doing you probably should use a WHERE clause to restrict the change to a specific row, because the default is that it applies to every row.

So this will probably do what you want:

$sql = "INSERT INTO `access_users`
  (`contact_first_name`,`contact_surname`,`contact_email`,`telephone`)
  VALUES (:firstname, :surname, :email, :telephone);
  ";

Note that I've also changed the order of columns; the order of your columns must match the order of values in your VALUES clause.

MySQL also supports an alternative syntax for INSERT:

$sql = "INSERT INTO `access_users`
  SET `contact_first_name` = :firstname,
    `contact_surname` = :surname,
    `contact_email` = :email,
    `telephone` = :telephone
  ";

This alternative syntax looks a bit more like an UPDATE statement, but it creates a new row like INSERT. The advantage is that it's easier to match up the columns to the correct parameters.

How to trigger jQuery change event in code

The parameterless form of the change() method triggers a change event. You can write something like:

$(document).ready(function() {
    $("#yourInitialElementID").change(function() {
        // Do something here...
        $(".yourDropDownClass").change();
    });
});

You could saveAs xlsx. Then you will loose the macros and generate a new workbook with a little less work.

How to call getClass() from a static method in Java?

getClass() method is defined in Object class with the following signature:

public final Class getClass()

Since it is not defined as static, you can not call it within a static code block. See these answers for more information: Q1, Q2, Q3.

If you're in a static context, then you have to use the class literal expression to get the Class, so you basically have to do like:

Foo.class

This type of expression is called Class Literals and they are explained in Java Language Specification Book as follows:

A class literal is an expression consisting of the name of a class, interface, array, or primitive type followed by a `.' and the token class. The type of a class literal is Class. It evaluates to the Class object for the named type (or for void) as defined by the defining class loader of the class of the current instance.

You can also find information about this subject on API documentation for Class.

Windows Explorer "Command Prompt Here"

Just type "cmd" to location bar, that's it. It will start a new command prompt in current path.

This solution was confirmed to work in Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10 (including Creators Update).

Keystrokes to move the focus to the location bar:

  • AltD in English (pointed out by Tim Stewart in the comments)
  • AltE in German

Adding a Time to a DateTime in C#

You can use the DateTime.Add() method to add the time to the date.

DateTime date = DateTime.Now;
TimeSpan time = new TimeSpan(36, 0, 0, 0);
DateTime combined = date.Add(time);
Console.WriteLine("{0:dddd}", combined);

You can also create your timespan by parsing a String, if that is what you need to do.

Alternatively, you could look at using other controls. You didn't mention if you are using winforms, wpf or asp.net, but there are various date and time picker controls that support selection of both date and time.

React - Display loading screen while DOM is rendering?

The workaround for this is:

In your render function do something like this:

constructor() {
    this.state = { isLoading: true }
}

componentDidMount() {
    this.setState({isLoading: false})
}

render() {
    return(
        this.state.isLoading ? *showLoadingScreen* : *yourPage()*
    )
}

Initialize isLoading as true in the constructor and false on componentDidMount

makefiles - compile all c files at once

LIBS  = -lkernel32 -luser32 -lgdi32 -lopengl32
CFLAGS = -Wall

# Should be equivalent to your list of C files, if you don't build selectively
SRC=$(wildcard *.c)

test: $(SRC)
    gcc -o $@ $^ $(CFLAGS) $(LIBS)

Drop columns whose name contains a specific string from pandas DataFrame

This method does everything in place. Many of the other answers create copies and are not as efficient:

df.drop(df.columns[df.columns.str.contains('Test')], axis=1, inplace=True)

Objective-C: Calling selectors with multiple arguments

Your code has two problems. One was identified and answered, but the other wasn't. The first was that your selector was missing the name of its parameter. However, even when you fix that, the line will still raise an exception, assuming your revised method signature still includes more than one argument. Let's say your revised method is declared as:

-(void)myTestWithString:(NSString *)sourceString comparedTo:(NSString *)testString ;

Creating selectors for methods that take multiple arguments is perfectly valid (e.g. @selector(myTestWithString:comparedTo:) ). However, the performSelector method only allows you to pass one value to myTest, which unfortunately has more than one parameter. It will error out and tell you that you didn't supply enough values.

You could always redefine your method to take a collection as it's only parameter:

-(void)myTestWithObjects:(NSDictionary *)testObjects ;

However, there is a more elegant solution (that doesn't require refactoring). The answer is to use NSInvocation, along with its setArgument:atIndex: and invoke methods.

I've written up an article, including a code example, if you want more details. The focus is on threading, but the basics still apply.

Good luck!

How to show current time in JavaScript in the format HH:MM:SS?

How to create a table from select query result in SQL Server 2008

Please be careful, MSSQL: "SELECT * INTO NewTable FROM OldTable"

is not always the same as MYSQL: "create table temp AS select.."

I think that there are occasions when this (in MSSQL) does not guarantee that all the fields in the new table are of the same type as the old.

For example :

create table oldTable (field1 varchar(10), field2 integer, field3 float)
insert into oldTable (field1,field2,field3) values ('1', 1, 1)
select top 1 * into newTable from oldTable

does not always yield:

create table newTable (field1 varchar(10), field2 integer, field3 float)

but may be:

create table newTable (field1 varchar(10), field2 integer, field3 integer)

Best method for reading newline delimited files and discarding the newlines?

Just use generator expressions:

blahblah = (l.rstrip() for l in open(filename))
for x in blahblah:
    print x

Also I want to advise you against reading whole file in memory -- looping over generators is much more efficient on big datasets.

How to get the Development/Staging/production Hosting Environment in ConfigureServices

Starting from ASP.NET Core 3.0, it is much simpler to access the environment variable from both ConfigureServices and Configure.

Simply inject IWebHostEnvironment into the Startup constructor itself. Like so...

public class Startup
{
    public Startup(IConfiguration configuration, IWebHostEnvironment env)
    {
        Configuration = configuration;
        _env = env;
    }

    public IConfiguration Configuration { get; }
    private readonly IWebHostEnvironment _env;

    public void ConfigureServices(IServiceCollection services)
    {
        if (_env.IsDevelopment())
        {
            //development
        }
    }

    public void Configure(IApplicationBuilder app)
    {
        if (_env.IsDevelopment())
        {
            //development
        }
    }
}

AngularJS - Attribute directive input value change

Since this must have an input element as a parent, you could just use

<input type="text" ng-model="foo" ng-change="myOnChangeFunction()">

Alternatively, you could use the ngModelController and add a function to $formatters, which executes functions on input change. See http://docs.angularjs.org/api/ng.directive:ngModel.NgModelController

.directive("myDirective", function() {
  return {
    restrict: 'A',
    require: 'ngModel',
    link: function(scope, element, attr, ngModel) {
      ngModel.$formatters.push(function(value) {
        // Do stuff here, and return the formatted value.
      });
  };
};

Dynamically create and submit form

Using Jquery

$('<form/>', { action: url, method: 'POST' }).append(
    $('<input>', {type: 'hidden', id: 'id_field_1', name: 'name_field_1', value: val_field_1}),
    $('<input>', {type: 'hidden', id: 'id_field_2', name: 'name_field_2', value: val_field_2}),
).appendTo('body').submit();

How to update large table with millions of rows in SQL Server?

  1. You should not be updating 10k rows in a set unless you are certain that the operation is getting Page Locks (due to multiple rows per page being part of the UPDATE operation). The issue is that Lock Escalation (from either Row or Page to Table locks) occurs at 5000 locks. So it is safest to keep it just below 5000, just in case the operation is using Row Locks.

  2. You should not be using SET ROWCOUNT to limit the number of rows that will be modified. There are two issues here:

    1. It has that been deprecated since SQL Server 2005 was released (11 years ago):

      Using SET ROWCOUNT will not affect DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE statements in a future release of SQL Server. Avoid using SET ROWCOUNT with DELETE, INSERT, and UPDATE statements in new development work, and plan to modify applications that currently use it. For a similar behavior, use the TOP syntax

    2. It can affect more than just the statement you are dealing with:

      Setting the SET ROWCOUNT option causes most Transact-SQL statements to stop processing when they have been affected by the specified number of rows. This includes triggers. The ROWCOUNT option does not affect dynamic cursors, but it does limit the rowset of keyset and insensitive cursors. This option should be used with caution.

    Instead, use the TOP () clause.

  3. There is no purpose in having an explicit transaction here. It complicates the code and you have no handling for a ROLLBACK, which isn't even needed since each statement is its own transaction (i.e. auto-commit).

  4. Assuming you find a reason to keep the explicit transaction, then you do not have a TRY / CATCH structure. Please see my answer on DBA.StackExchange for a TRY / CATCH template that handles transactions:

    Are we required to handle Transaction in C# Code as well as in Store procedure

I suspect that the real WHERE clause is not being shown in the example code in the Question, so simply relying upon what has been shown, a better model would be:

DECLARE @Rows INT,
        @BatchSize INT; -- keep below 5000 to be safe

SET @BatchSize = 2000;

SET @Rows = @BatchSize; -- initialize just to enter the loop

BEGIN TRY
  WHILE (@Rows = @BatchSize)
  BEGIN
      UPDATE TOP (@BatchSize) tab
      SET    tab.Value = 'abc1'
      FROM  TableName tab
      WHERE tab.Parameter1 = 'abc'
      AND   tab.Parameter2 = 123
      AND   tab.Value <> 'abc1' COLLATE Latin1_General_100_BIN2;
      -- Use a binary Collation (ending in _BIN2, not _BIN) to make sure
      -- that you don't skip differences that compare the same due to
      -- insensitivity of case, accent, etc, or linguistic equivalence.

      SET @Rows = @@ROWCOUNT;
  END;
END TRY
BEGIN CATCH
  RAISERROR(stuff);
  RETURN;
END CATCH;

By testing @Rows against @BatchSize, you can avoid that final UPDATE query (in most cases) because the final set is typically some number of rows less than @BatchSize, in which case we know that there are no more to process (which is what you see in the output shown in your answer). Only in those cases where the final set of rows is equal to @BatchSize will this code run a final UPDATE affecting 0 rows.

I also added a condition to the WHERE clause to prevent rows that have already been updated from being updated again.

How do I convert certain columns of a data frame to become factors?

Given the following sample

myData <- data.frame(A=rep(1:2, 3), B=rep(1:3, 2), Pulse=20:25)

then

myData$A <-as.factor(myData$A)
myData$B <-as.factor(myData$B)

or you could select your columns altogether and wrap it up nicely:

# select columns
cols <- c("A", "B")

What is the scope of variables in JavaScript?

Modern Js, ES6+, 'const' and 'let'

You should be using block scoping for every variable you create, just like most other major languages. var is obsolete. This makes your code safer and more maintainable.

const should be used for 95% of cases. It makes it so the variable reference can't change. Array, object, and DOM node properties can change and should likely be const.

let should be be used for any variable expecting to be reassigned. This includes within a for loop. If you ever change value beyond initialization, use let.

Block scope means that the variable will only be available within the brackets in which it is declared. This extends to internal scopes, including anonymous functions created within your scope.

When to use StringBuilder in Java

Have a look at: http://www.javaspecialists.eu/archive/Issue068.html and http://www.javaspecialists.eu/archive/Issue105.html

Do the same tests in your environment and check if newer JDK or your Java implementation do some type of string operation better with String or better with StringBuilder.

Can I have onScrollListener for a ScrollView?

You can use NestedScrollView instead of ScrollView. However, when using a Kotlin Lambda, it won't know you want NestedScrollView's setOnScrollChangeListener instead of the one at View (which is API level 23). You can fix this by specifying the first parameter as a NestedScrollView.

nestedScrollView.setOnScrollChangeListener { _: NestedScrollView, scrollX: Int, scrollY: Int, _: Int, _: Int ->
    Log.d("ScrollView", "Scrolled to $scrollX, $scrollY")
}

Angular 2 - Using 'this' inside setTimeout

You need to use Arrow function ()=> ES6 feature to preserve this context within setTimeout.

this.messageSuccess = true;

setTimeout(()=>{                           //<<<---using ()=> syntax
      this.messageSuccess = false;
 }, 3000);

How to calculate Average Waiting Time and average Turn-around time in SJF Scheduling?

The Gantt charts given by Hifzan and Raja are for FCFS algorithms.

With an SJF algorithm, processes can be interrupted. That is, every process doesn't necessarily execute straight through their given burst time.

P3|P2|P4|P3|P5|P1|P5

1|2|3|5|7|8|11|14

P3 arrives at 1ms, then is interrupted by P2 and P4 since they both have smaller burst times, and then P3 resumes. P5 starts executing next, then is interrupted by P1 since P1's burst time is smaller than P5's. You must note the arrival times and be careful. These problems can be trickier than how they appear at-first-glance.

EDIT: This applies only to Preemptive SJF algorithms. A plain SJF algorithm is non-preemptive, meaning it does not interrupt a process.

List all files from a directory recursively with Java

In Guava you don't have to wait for a Collection to be returned to you but can actually iterate over the files. It is easy to imagine a IDoSomethingWithThisFile interface in the signature of the below function:

public static void collectFilesInDir(File dir) {
    TreeTraverser<File> traverser = Files.fileTreeTraverser();
    FluentIterable<File> filesInPostOrder = traverser.preOrderTraversal(dir);
    for (File f: filesInPostOrder)
        System.out.printf("File: %s\n", f.getPath());
}

TreeTraverser also allows you to between various traversal styles.

Is there any way to call a function periodically in JavaScript?

Everyone has a setTimeout/setInterval solution already. I think that it is important to note that you can pass functions to setInterval, not just strings. Its actually probably a little "safer" to pass real functions instead of strings that will be "evaled" to those functions.

// example 1
function test() {
  alert('called');
}
var interval = setInterval(test, 10000);

Or:

// example 2
var counter = 0;
var interval = setInterval(function() { alert("#"+counter++); }, 5000);

The usual way to do this in PHP is to put id[] in your URL instead of just id:

Then $_GET['id'] will be an array of those values. It's not especially pretty, but it works out of the box.

Converting string to byte array in C#

Also you can use an Extension Method to add a method to the string type as below:

static class Helper
{
   public static byte[] ToByteArray(this string str)
   {
      return System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(str);
   }
}

And use it like below:

string foo = "bla bla";
byte[] result = foo.ToByteArray();

What is the difference between .yaml and .yml extension?

As @David Heffeman indicates the recommendation is to use .yaml when possible, and the recommendation has been that way since September 2006.

That some projects use .yml is mostly because of ignorance of the implementers/documenters: they wanted to use YAML because of readability, or some other feature not available in other formats, were not familiar with the recommendation and and just implemented what worked, maybe after looking at some other project/library (without questioning whether what was done is correct).

The best way to approach this is to be rigorous when creating new files (i.e. use .yaml) and be permissive when accepting input (i.e. allow .yml when you encounter it), possible automatically upgrading/correcting these errors when possible.

The other recommendation I have is to document the argument(s) why you have to use .yml, when you think you have to. That way you don't look like an ignoramus, and give others the opportunity to understand your reasoning. Of course "everybody else is doing it" and "On Google .yml has more pages than .yaml" are not arguments, they are just statistics about the popularity of project(s) that have it wrong or right (with regards to the extension of YAML files). You can try to prove that some projects are popular, just because they use a .yml extension instead of the correct .yaml, but I think you will be hard pressed to do so.

Some projects realize (too late) that they use the incorrect extension (e.g. originally docker-compose used .yml, but in later versions started to use .yaml, although they still support .yml). Others still seem ignorant about the correct extension, like AppVeyor early 2019, but allow you to specify the configuration file for a project, including extension. This allows you to get the configuration file out of your face as well as giving it the proper extension: I use .appveyor.yaml instead of appveyor.yml for building the windows wheels of my YAML parser for Python).

On the other hand:

The Yaml (sic!) component of Symfony2 implements a selected subset of features defined in the YAML 1.2 version specification.

So it seems fitting that they also use a subset of the recommended extension.

How to specify function types for void (not Void) methods in Java8?

You are trying to use the wrong interface type. The type Function is not appropriate in this case because it receives a parameter and has a return value. Instead you should use Consumer (formerly known as Block)

The Function type is declared as

interface Function<T,R> {
  R apply(T t);
}

However, the Consumer type is compatible with that you are looking for:

interface Consumer<T> {
   void accept(T t);
}

As such, Consumer is compatible with methods that receive a T and return nothing (void). And this is what you want.

For instance, if I wanted to display all element in a list I could simply create a consumer for that with a lambda expression:

List<String> allJedi = asList("Luke","Obiwan","Quigon");
allJedi.forEach( jedi -> System.out.println(jedi) );

You can see above that in this case, the lambda expression receives a parameter and has no return value.

Now, if I wanted to use a method reference instead of a lambda expression to create a consume of this type, then I need a method that receives a String and returns void, right?.

I could use different types of method references, but in this case let's take advantage of an object method reference by using the println method in the System.out object, like this:

Consumer<String> block = System.out::println

Or I could simply do

allJedi.forEach(System.out::println);

The println method is appropriate because it receives a value and has a return type void, just like the accept method in Consumer.

So, in your code, you need to change your method signature to somewhat like:

public static void myForEach(List<Integer> list, Consumer<Integer> myBlock) {
   list.forEach(myBlock);
}

And then you should be able to create a consumer, using a static method reference, in your case by doing:

myForEach(theList, Test::displayInt);

Ultimately, you could even get rid of your myForEach method altogether and simply do:

theList.forEach(Test::displayInt);

About Functions as First Class Citizens

All been said, the truth is that Java 8 will not have functions as first-class citizens since a structural function type will not be added to the language. Java will simply offer an alternative way to create implementations of functional interfaces out of lambda expressions and method references. Ultimately lambda expressions and method references will be bound to object references, therefore all we have is objects as first-class citizens. The important thing is the functionality is there since we can pass objects as parameters, bound them to variable references and return them as values from other methods, then they pretty much serve a similar purpose.

jQuery.parseJSON throws “Invalid JSON” error due to escaped single quote in JSON

If you need a single quote inside of a string, since \' is undefined by the spec, use \u0027 see http://www.utf8-chartable.de/ for all of them

edit: please excuse my misuse of the word backticks in the comments. I meant backslash. My point here is that in the event you have nested strings inside other strings, I think it can be more useful and readable to use unicode instead of lots of backslashes to escape a single quote. If you are not nested however it truly is easier to just put a plain old quote in there.

Text that shows an underline on hover

<span class="txt">Some Text</span>

.txt:hover {
    text-decoration: underline;
}

Scanner is skipping nextLine() after using next() or nextFoo()?

It does that because input.nextInt(); doesn't capture the newline. you could do like the others proposed by adding an input.nextLine(); underneath.
Alternatively you can do it C# style and parse a nextLine to an integer like so:

int number = Integer.parseInt(input.nextLine());

Doing this works just as well, and it saves you a line of code.

Python "string_escape" vs "unicode_escape"

According to my interpretation of the implementation of unicode-escape and the unicode repr in the CPython 2.6.5 source, yes; the only difference between repr(unicode_string) and unicode_string.encode('unicode-escape') is the inclusion of wrapping quotes and escaping whichever quote was used.

They are both driven by the same function, unicodeescape_string. This function takes a parameter whose sole function is to toggle the addition of the wrapping quotes and escaping of that quote.

How do I use checkboxes in an IF-THEN statement in Excel VBA 2010?

A checkbox has a linked cell, which contains the True/False representing the state of the checkbox. It is much easier to reference this cell's value than the value of the embedded object which is the checkbox.

Manually: Right click on the checkbox, choose Format, click in the Linked Cell box, and select the cell to contain the checkbox value.

In code:

Set cbTime = ActiveSheet.CheckBoxes.Add(100, 100, 50, 15)
With cbTime
    .Value = xlOff ' = unchecked  xlOn = checked

How do I deal with special characters like \^$.?*|+()[{ in my regex?

I think the easiest way to match the characters like

\^$.?*|+()[

are using character classes from within R. Consider the following to clean column headers from a data file, which could contain spaces, and punctuation characters:

> library(stringr)
> colnames(order_table) <- str_replace_all(colnames(order_table),"[:punct:]|[:space:]","")

This approach allows us to string character classes to match punctation characters, in addition to whitespace characters, something you would normally have to escape with \\ to detect. You can learn more about the character classes at this cheatsheet below, and you can also type in ?regexp to see more info about this.

What is tail recursion?

This excerpt from the book Programming in Lua shows how to make a proper tail recursion (in Lua, but should apply to Lisp too) and why it's better.

A tail call [tail recursion] is a kind of goto dressed as a call. A tail call happens when a function calls another as its last action, so it has nothing else to do. For instance, in the following code, the call to g is a tail call:

function f (x)
  return g(x)
end

After f calls g, it has nothing else to do. In such situations, the program does not need to return to the calling function when the called function ends. Therefore, after the tail call, the program does not need to keep any information about the calling function in the stack. ...

Because a proper tail call uses no stack space, there is no limit on the number of "nested" tail calls that a program can make. For instance, we can call the following function with any number as argument; it will never overflow the stack:

function foo (n)
  if n > 0 then return foo(n - 1) end
end

... As I said earlier, a tail call is a kind of goto. As such, a quite useful application of proper tail calls in Lua is for programming state machines. Such applications can represent each state by a function; to change state is to go to (or to call) a specific function. As an example, let us consider a simple maze game. The maze has several rooms, each with up to four doors: north, south, east, and west. At each step, the user enters a movement direction. If there is a door in that direction, the user goes to the corresponding room; otherwise, the program prints a warning. The goal is to go from an initial room to a final room.

This game is a typical state machine, where the current room is the state. We can implement such maze with one function for each room. We use tail calls to move from one room to another. A small maze with four rooms could look like this:

function room1 ()
  local move = io.read()
  if move == "south" then return room3()
  elseif move == "east" then return room2()
  else print("invalid move")
       return room1() -- stay in the same room
  end
end

function room2 ()
  local move = io.read()
  if move == "south" then return room4()
  elseif move == "west" then return room1()
  else print("invalid move")
       return room2()
  end
end

function room3 ()
  local move = io.read()
  if move == "north" then return room1()
  elseif move == "east" then return room4()
  else print("invalid move")
       return room3()
  end
end

function room4 ()
  print("congratulations!")
end

So you see, when you make a recursive call like:

function x(n)
  if n==0 then return 0
  n= n-2
  return x(n) + 1
end

This is not tail recursive because you still have things to do (add 1) in that function after the recursive call is made. If you input a very high number it will probably cause a stack overflow.

        e.printStackTrace();
    }
    return Optional.empty();
}

The method declaration for obtaining the controller was

public <T> T getController()

By using type U passed into my method via the class object, it could be forwarded to the method get controller to tell it what type of object to return. An optional object is returned in case the wrong class is supplied and an exception occurs in which case an empty optional will be returned which we can check for.

This is what the final call to the method looked like (if present of the optional object returned takes a Consumer

getController(LoadController.class).ifPresent(controller->controller.onNotifyComplete());

The name does not exist in the namespace error in XAML

This problem can also be caused if the assembly that you're referencing isn't actually built. For example, if your xaml is in Assembly1 and you're referencing a class also in Assembly1, but that assembly has errors and isn't building, this error will be shown.

I feel silly about it, but in my case I was tearing asunder a user control and had all sorts of errors in the related classes as a result. As I was attempting to fix them all I started with the errors in question, not realising that xaml relies on built assemblies to find these references (unlike c#/vb code which can work it out even before you build).

initializing a Guava ImmutableMap

Notice that your error message only contains five K, V pairs, 10 arguments total. This is by design; the ImmutableMap class provides six different of() methods, accepting between zero and five key-value pairings. There is not an of(...) overload accepting a varags parameter because K and V can be different types.

You want an ImmutableMap.Builder:

ImmutableMap<String,String> myMap = ImmutableMap.<String, String>builder()
    .put("key1", "value1")
    .put("key2", "value2")
    .put("key3", "value3")
    .put("key4", "value4")
    .put("key5", "value5")
    .put("key6", "value6")
    .put("key7", "value7")
    .put("key8", "value8")
    .put("key9", "value9")
    .build();

Creating the checkbox dynamically using JavaScript?

You're trying to put a text node inside an input element.

Input elements are empty and can't have children.

...
var checkbox = document.createElement('input');
checkbox.type = "checkbox";
checkbox.name = "name";
checkbox.value = "value";
checkbox.id = "id";

var label = document.createElement('label')
label.htmlFor = "id";
label.appendChild(document.createTextNode('text for label after checkbox'));

container.appendChild(checkbox);
container.appendChild(label);

How can I connect to MySQL in Python 3 on Windows?

Summary

Mysqlclient is the best alternative(IMHO) because it works flawlessly with Python 3+, follows expected conventions (unlike mysql connector), uses the object name mysqldb which enables convenient porting of existing software and is used by Django for Python 3 builds

Is there a repository available where the binaries exist for mysqldb?

Yes. mysqlclient allows you to use mysqldb functions. Though, remember this is not a direct port by mysqldb, but a build by mysqlclient

How can I connect to MySQL in Python 3 on Windows?

pip install mysqlclient

Example

#!/Python36/python
#Please change above path to suit your platform. Am running it on Windows
import MySQLdb
db = MySQLdb.connect(user="my-username",passwd="my-password",host="localhost",db="my-databasename")
cursor = db.cursor()
cursor.execute("SELECT * from my-table-name")
data=cursor.fetchall()
for row in data :
    print (row)
db.close()

I can't find mysqldb for Python 3.

mysqldb has not been ported yet

Is there a splice method for strings?

I solved my problem using this code, is a somewhat replacement for the missing splice.

let str = "I need to remove a character from this";
let pos = str.indexOf("character")

if(pos>-1){
  let result = str.slice(0, pos-2) + str.slice(pos, str.length);
  console.log(result) //I need to remove character from this
}

I needed to remove a character before/after a certain word, after you get the position the string is split in two and then recomposed by flexibly removing characters using an offset along pos

How do you get the length of a list in the JSF expression language?

Note: This solution is better for older versions of JSTL. For versions greater then 1.1 I recommend using fn:length(MyBean.somelist) as suggested by Bill James.

This article has some more detailed information, including another possible solution;

The problem is that we are trying to invoke the list's size method (which is a valid LinkedList method), but it's not a JavaBeans-compliant getter method, so the expression list.size-1 cannot be evaluated.

There are two ways to address this dilemma. First, you can use the RT Core library, like this:

<c_rt:out value='<%= list[list.size()-1] %>'/>

Second, if you want to avoid Java code in your JSP pages, you can implement a simple wrapper class that contains a list and provides access to the list's size property with a JavaBeans-compliant getter method. That bean is listed in Listing 2.25.

The problem with c_rt method is that you need to get the variable from request manually, because it doesn't recognize it otherwise. At this point you are putting in a lot of code for what should be built in functionality. This is a GIANT flaw in the EL.

I ended up using the "wrapper" method, here is the class for it;

public class CollectionWrapper {

    Collection collection;

    public CollectionWrapper(Collection collection) {
        this.collection = collection;
    }

    public Collection getCollection() {
        return collection;
    }

    public int getSize() {
        return collection.size();
    }
}

A third option that no one has mentioned yet is to put your list size into the model (assuming you are using MVC) as a separate attribute. So in your model you would have "someList" and then "someListSize". That may be simplest way to solve this issue.

Convert integer value to matching Java Enum

This is what I use:

public enum Quality {ENOUGH,BETTER,BEST;
                     private static final int amount = EnumSet.allOf(Quality.class).size();
                     private static Quality[] val = new Quality[amount];
                     static{ for(Quality q:EnumSet.allOf(Quality.class)){ val[q.ordinal()]=q; } }
                     public static Quality fromInt(int i) { return val[i]; }
                     public Quality next() { return fromInt((ordinal()+1)%amount); }
                    }

How to prevent form resubmission when page is refreshed (F5 / CTRL+R)

Why not just use the $_POST['submit'] variable as a logical statement in order to save whatever is in the form. You can always redirect to the same page (In case they refresh, and when they hit go back in the browser, the submit post variable wouldn't be set anymore. Just make sure your submit button has a name and id of submit.

How do I auto-resize an image to fit a 'div' container?

Here is a solution that will both vertically and horizontally align your img within a div without any stretching even if the image supplied is too small or too big to fit in the div.

The HTML content:

<div id="myDiv">
  <img alt="Client Logo" title="Client Logo" src="Imagelocation" />
</div>

The CSS content:

#myDiv
{
  height: 104px;
  width: 140px;
}
#myDiv img
{
  max-width: 100%;
  max-height: 100%;
  margin: auto;
  display: block;
}

The jQuery part:

var logoHeight = $('#myDiv img').height();
    if (logoHeight < 104) {
        var margintop = (104 - logoHeight) / 2;
        $('#myDiv img').css('margin-top', margintop);
    }

How to find NSDocumentDirectory in Swift?

More convenient Swift 3 method:

let documentsUrl = FileManager.default.urls(for: .documentDirectory,
                                             in: .userDomainMask).first!

Changing cell color using apache poi

To create your cell styles see: http://poi.apache.org/spreadsheet/quick-guide.html#CustomColors.

Custom colors

HSSF:

HSSFWorkbook wb = new HSSFWorkbook();
HSSFSheet sheet = wb.createSheet();
HSSFRow row = sheet.createRow((short) 0);
HSSFCell cell = row.createCell((short) 0);
cell.setCellValue("Default Palette");

//apply some colors from the standard palette,
// as in the previous examples.
//we'll use red text on a lime background

HSSFCellStyle style = wb.createCellStyle();
style.setFillForegroundColor(HSSFColor.LIME.index);
style.setFillPattern(HSSFCellStyle.SOLID_FOREGROUND);

HSSFFont font = wb.createFont();
font.setColor(HSSFColor.RED.index);
style.setFont(font);

cell.setCellStyle(style);

//save with the default palette
FileOutputStream out = new FileOutputStream("default_palette.xls");
wb.write(out);
out.close();

//now, let's replace RED and LIME in the palette
// with a more attractive combination
// (lovingly borrowed from freebsd.org)

cell.setCellValue("Modified Palette");

//creating a custom palette for the workbook
HSSFPalette palette = wb.getCustomPalette();

//replacing the standard red with freebsd.org red
palette.setColorAtIndex(HSSFColor.RED.index,
        (byte) 153,  //RGB red (0-255)
        (byte) 0,    //RGB green
        (byte) 0     //RGB blue
);
//replacing lime with freebsd.org gold
palette.setColorAtIndex(HSSFColor.LIME.index, (byte) 255, (byte) 204, (byte) 102);

//save with the modified palette
// note that wherever we have previously used RED or LIME, the
// new colors magically appear
out = new FileOutputStream("modified_palette.xls");
wb.write(out);
out.close();

XSSF:

 XSSFWorkbook wb = new XSSFWorkbook();
    XSSFSheet sheet = wb.createSheet();
    XSSFRow row = sheet.createRow(0);
    XSSFCell cell = row.createCell( 0);
    cell.setCellValue("custom XSSF colors");

    XSSFCellStyle style1 = wb.createCellStyle();
    style1.setFillForegroundColor(new XSSFColor(new java.awt.Color(128, 0, 128)));
    style1.setFillPattern(CellStyle.SOLID_FOREGROUND);

pandas: best way to select all columns whose names start with X

In my case I needed a list of prefixes

colsToScale=["production", "test", "development"]

Label on the left side instead above an input field

I managed to fix my issue with. Seems to work fine and means I dont have to add widths to all my inputs manually.

.form-inline .form-group input {
 width: auto;

The problem you're having is that the aspNet user doesn't have access to the certificate. You have to give access using the winhttpcertcfg.exe

An example on how to set this up is at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901183

Under step 2 in more information

EDIT: In more recent versions of IIS, this feature is built in to the certificate manager tool - and can be accessed by right clicking on the certificate and using the option for managing private keys. Parsing huge logfiles in Node.js - read in line-by-line

You can use the inbuilt readline package, see docs here. I use stream to create a new output stream.

var fs = require('fs'),
    readline = require('readline'),
    stream = require('stream');

var instream = fs.createReadStream('/path/to/file');
var outstream = new stream;
outstream.readable = true;
outstream.writable = true;

var rl = readline.createInterface({
    input: instream,
    output: outstream,
    terminal: false
});

rl.on('line', function(line) {
    console.log(line);
    //Do your stuff ...
    //Then write to outstream
    rl.write(cubestuff);
});

Large files will take some time to process. Do tell if it works.

Convert JsonNode into POJO

This should do the trick:

mapper.readValue(fileReader, MyClass.class);

I say should because I'm using that with a String, not a BufferedReader but it should still work.

Here's my code:

String inputString = // I grab my string here
MySessionClass sessionObject;
try {
    ObjectMapper objectMapper = new ObjectMapper();
    sessionObject = objectMapper.readValue(inputString, MySessionClass.class);

Here's the official documentation for that call: http://jackson.codehaus.org/1.7.9/javadoc/org/codehaus/jackson/map/ObjectMapper.html#readValue(java.lang.String, java.lang.Class)

You can also define a custom deserializer when you instantiate the ObjectMapper: http://wiki.fasterxml.com/JacksonHowToCustomDeserializers

Edit: I just remembered something else. If your object coming in has more properties than the POJO has and you just want to ignore the extras you'll want to set this:

    objectMapper.configure(DeserializationConfig.Feature.FAIL_ON_UNKNOWN_PROPERTIES, false);

Or you'll get an error that it can't find the property to set into.

React Native: JAVA_HOME is not set and no 'java' command could be found in your PATH

For those still not able to set JAVA_HOME from Android Studio installation, for me the path was actually not in C:\...\Android Studio\jre

but rather in the ...\Android Studio\jre\jre.

Don't ask me why though.

How to create the branch from specific commit in different branch

If you are using this form of the branch command (with start point), it does not matter where your HEAD is.

What you are doing:

git checkout dev
git branch test 07aeec983bfc17c25f0b0a7c1d47da8e35df7af8
  • First, you set your HEAD to the branch dev,

  • Second, you start a new branch on commit 07aeec98. There is no bb.txt at this commit (according to your github repo).

If you want to start a new branch at the location you have just checked out, you can either run branch with no start point:

git branch test

or as other have answered, branch and checkout there in one operation:

git checkout -b test

I think that you might be confused by that fact that 07aeec98 is part of the branch dev. It is true that this commit is an ancestor of dev, its changes are needed to reach the latest commit in dev. However, they are other commits that are needed to reach the latest dev, and these are not necessarily in the history of 07aeec98.

8480e8ae (where you added bb.txt) is for example not in the history of 07aeec98. If you branch from 07aeec98, you won't get the changes introduced by 8480e8ae.

In other words: if you merge branch A and branch B into branch C, then create a new branch on a commit of A, you won't get the changes introduced in B.

Same here, you had two parallel branches master and dev, which you merged in dev. Branching out from a commit of master (older than the merge) won't provide you with the changes of dev.

If you want to permanently integrate new changes from master into your feature branches, you should merge master into them and go on. This will create merge commits in your feature branches, though.

If you have not published your feature branches, you can also rebase them on the updated master: git rebase master featureA. Be prepared to solve possible conflicts.

If you want a workflow where you can work on feature branches free of merge commits and still integrate with newer changes in master, I recommend the following:

  • base every new feature branch on a commit of master
  • create a dev branch on a commit of master
  • when you need to see how your feature branch integrates with new changes in master, merge both master and the feature branch into dev.

Do not commit into dev directly, use it only for merging other branches.

For example, if you are working on feature A and B:

a---b---c---d---e---f---g -master
    \       \
     \       \-x -featureB
      \
       \-j---k -featureA

Merge branches into a dev branch to check if they work well with the new master:

a---b---c---d---e---f---g -master
    \       \            \
     \       \            \--x'---k' -dev
      \       \             /    /
       \       \-x----------    /    -featureB
        \                      /
         \-j---k--------------- -featureA

You can continue working on your feature branches, and keep merging in new changes from both master and feature branches into dev regularly.

a---b---c---d---e---f---g---h---i----- -master
    \       \            \            \
     \       \            \--x'---k'---i'---l' -dev
      \       \             /    /         /
       \       \-x----------    /         /  -featureB
        \                      /         /
         \-j---k-----------------l------ -featureA

When it is time to integrate the new features, merge the feature branches (not dev!) into master.

Does Internet Explorer 8 support HTML 5?

MS-DOS Batch file pause with enter key

There's a pause command that does just that, though it's not specifically the enter key.

If you really want to wait for only the enter key, you can use the set command to ask for user input with a dummy variable, something like:

set /p DUMMY=Hit ENTER to continue...

Spring Boot - Cannot determine embedded database driver class for database type NONE

This is how I resolved this problem.

In my case: I had to configure the datasource for MySQL Server, which was an external Server.

As we all know, Spring boot has capability to auto-configure DataSource for embedded databases.

Thus, I realized that I had to disable datasource auto-configuration in order use my custom configuration.

As mentioned above by many, I disabled Automatic DataSource configuration of Spring Boot at application.properties

spring.autoconfigure.exclude=org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure.jdbc.DataSourceAutoConfiguration

I defined all hibernate configuration properties in a separate file: hibernate-mysql.properties

Then, I coded my own Custom Hibernate Configuration in following manner and it resolved the issue.

My way to configure the desired DataSource based on properties in a custom property file and populate your LocalSessionFactoryBean with your data source and other hibernate configuration.

How to disable an Android button?

In Java, once you have the reference of the button:

Button button = (Button) findviewById(R.id.button);

To enable/disable the button, you can use either:

button.setEnabled(false);
button.setEnabled(true);

Or:

button.setClickable(false);
button.setClickable(true);

Since you want to disable the button from the beginning, you can use button.setEnabled(false); in the onCreate method. Otherwise, from XML, you can directly use:

android:clickable = "false"

So:

<Button
        android:id="@+id/button"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:text="@string/button_text"
        android:clickable = "false" />
