difference between width auto and width 100 percent

Width auto

The initial width of a block level element like div or p is auto. This makes it expand to occupy all available horizontal space within its containing block. If it has any horizontal padding or border, the widths of those do not add to the total width of the element.

Width 100%

On the other hand, if you specify width:100%, the element’s total width will be 100% of its containing block plus any horizontal margin, padding and border (unless you’ve used box-sizing:border-box, in which case only margins are added to the 100% to change how its total width is calculated). This may be what you want, but most likely it isn’t.

Converting std::__cxx11::string to std::string

I had a similar issue recently while trying to link with the pre-built binaries of hdf5 version 1.10.5 on Ubuntu 16.04. None of the solutions suggested here worked for me, and I was using g++ version 9.1. I found that the best solution is to build the hdf5 library from source. Do not use the pre-built binaries since these were built using gcc 4.9! Instead, download the source code archives from the hdf website for your particular distribution and build the library. It is very easy.

You will also need the compression libraries zlib and szip from here and here, respectively, if you do not already have them on your system.

is there a post render callback for Angular JS directive?

I had the same problem and I believe the answer really is no. See Miško's comment and some discussion in the group.

Angular can track that all of the function calls it makes to manipulate the DOM are complete, but since those functions could trigger async logic that's still updating the DOM after they return, Angular couldn't be expected to know about it. Any callback Angular gives might work sometimes, but wouldn't be safe to rely on.

We solved this heuristically with a setTimeout, as you did.

I had this issue because the tutorial code I was trying to run wasn't in the correct package even though I had typed in the package name at the top of each class.

I right-clicked each class, Refactor and Move To and accepted the package name suggestion.

Since I did long processing only in one admin page in a WebForms application I used the code option. But to allow a temporary quick fix on production I used the config version in a <location> tag in web.config. This way my admin/processing page got enough time, while pages for end users and such kept their old time out behaviour.

Below I gave the config for you Googlers needing the same quick fix. You should ofcourse use other values than my '4 hour' example, but DO note that the session timeOut is in minutes, while the request executionTimeout is in seconds!

And - since it's 2015 already - for a NON- quickfix you should use .Net 4.5's async/await now if at all possible, instead of the .NET 2.0's ASYNC page that was state of the art when KEV answered in 2010 :).

C++ Singleton design pattern

@Loki Astari's answer is excellent.

However there are times with multiple static objects where you need to be able to guarantee that the singleton will not be destroyed until all your static objects that use the singleton no longer need it.

In this case std::shared_ptr can be used to keep the singleton alive for all users even when the static destructors are being called at the end of the program:

JVMS 7 5.1 says says that interning is implemented magically and efficiently with a dedicated CONSTANT_String_info struct (unlike most other objects which have more generic representations):

A string literal is a reference to an instance of class String, and is derived from a CONSTANT_String_info structure (§4.4.3) in the binary representation of a class or interface. The CONSTANT_String_info structure gives the sequence of Unicode code points constituting the string literal.

The Java programming language requires that identical string literals (that is, literals that contain the same sequence of code points) must refer to the same instance of class String (JLS §3.10.5). In addition, if the method String.intern is called on any string, the result is a reference to the same class instance that would be returned if that string appeared as a literal. Thus, the following expression must have the value true:

("a" + "b" + "c").intern() == "abc"

To derive a string literal, the Java Virtual Machine examines the sequence of code points given by the CONSTANT_String_info structure.

  • If the method String.intern has previously been called on an instance of class String containing a sequence of Unicode code points identical to that given by the CONSTANT_String_info structure, then the result of string literal derivation is a reference to that same instance of class String.

  • Otherwise, a new instance of class String is created containing the sequence of Unicode code points given by the CONSTANT_String_info structure; a reference to that class instance is the result of string literal derivation. Finally, the intern method of the new String instance is invoked.

Let's decompile some OpenJDK 7 bytecode to see interning in action.

Note how:

  • 0 and 3: the same ldc #2 constant is loaded (the literals)
  • 12: a new string instance is created (with #2 as argument)
  • 35: a and c are compared as regular objects with if_acmpne

The representation of constant strings is quite magic on the bytecode:

and the JVMS quote above seems to say that whenever the Utf8 pointed to is the same, then identical instances are loaded by ldc.

I have done similar tests for fields, and:

  • static final String s = "abc" points to the constant table through the ConstantValue Attribute
  • non-final fields don't have that attribute, but can still be initialized with ldc

Conclusion: there is direct bytecode support for the string pool, and the memory representation is efficient.

Bonus: compare that to the Integer pool, which does not have direct bytecode support (i.e. no CONSTANT_String_info analogue).

What is the difference between Class.getResource() and ClassLoader.getResource()?

All these answers around here, as well as the answers in this question, suggest that loading absolute URLs, like "/foo/bar.properties" treated the same by class.getResourceAsStream(String) and class.getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream(String). This is NOT the case, at least not in my Tomcat configuration/version (currently 7.0.40).

MyClass.class.getResourceAsStream("/foo/bar.properties"); // works!  
MyClass.class.getClassLoader().getResourceAsStream("/foo/bar.properties"); // does NOT work!

Sorry, I have absolutely no satisfying explanation, but I guess that tomcat does dirty tricks and his black magic with the classloaders and cause the difference. I always used class.getResourceAsStream(String) in the past and haven't had any problems.

Spring RequestMapping for controllers that produce and consume JSON

The simple answer to your question is that there is no Annotation-Inheritance in Java. However, there is a way to use the Spring annotations in a way that I think will help solve your problem.

@RequestMapping is supported at both the type level and at the method level.

When you put @RequestMapping at the type level, most of the attributes are 'inherited' for each method in that class. This is mentioned in the Spring reference documentation. Look at the api docs for details on how each attribute is handled when adding @RequestMapping to a type. I've summarized this for each attribute below:

  • name: Value at Type level is concatenated with value at method level using '#' as a separator.
  • value: Value at Type level is inherited by method.
  • path: Value at Type level is inherited by method.
  • method: Value at Type level is inherited by method.
  • params: Value at Type level is inherited by method.
  • headers: Value at Type level is inherited by method.
  • consumes: Value at Type level is overridden by method.
  • produces: Value at Type level is overridden by method.

Best way to resolve file path too long exception

You can't "directly" mock static method (hence extension method) with mocking framework. You can try Moles (http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/pex/downloads.aspx), a free tool from Microsoft that implements a different approach. Here is the description of the tool:

I don't see any difference w.r.t safety or versatility, since you can do the same thing with pointer or reference. I also don't think there is any visible difference in performance since references are implemented by pointers.

But I think using reference is better because it is consistent with the standard library. For example, chaining in iostream is done by reference rather than pointer.

MySQL: @variable vs. variable. What's the difference?

MSSQL requires that variables within procedures be DECLAREd and folks use the @Variable syntax (DECLARE @TEXT VARCHAR(25) = 'text'). Also, MS allows for declares within any block in the procedure, unlike mySQL which requires all the DECLAREs at the top.

While good on the command line, I feel using the "set = @variable" within stored procedures in mySQL is risky. There is no scope and variables live across scope boundaries. This is similar to variables in JavaScript being declared without the "var" prefix, which are then the global namespace and create unexpected collisions and overwrites.

I am hoping that the good folks at mySQL will allow DECLARE @Variable at various block levels within a stored procedure. Notice the @ (at sign). The @ sign prefix helps to separate variable names from table column names - as they are often the same. Of course, one can always add an "v" or "l_" prefix, but the @ sign is a handy and succinct way to have the variable name match the column you might be extracting the data from without clobbering it.

MySQL is new to stored procedures and they have done a good job for their first version. It will be a pleaure to see where they take it form here and to watch the server side aspects of the language mature.

Look in your settings.xml (or, possibly your project's parent or corporate parent POM) for the <repositories> element. It will look something like the below.

Apache is not running from XAMPP Control Panel ( Error: Apache shutdown unexpectedly. This may be due to a blocked port)

There are many possible answers for this problem. The most common and most likely is that you're running another program which is blocking port 80 or 443. If you've installed Skype, then you've found your problem! Change apache's port settings to 81 and apache will work. There's a good tutorial on that To check this you can open up your command line by clicking the start menu, and typing 'cmd', and enter the command

    netstat -nab

this wil return a list of programs that will vaguely resemble this pattern

You need to find a line (or lines) ending in :80 and terminate them in order to start apache. If there is no line ending in :80, there are more things you can do.

Mostly, be looking for syntax errors that you could've created by editing your httpd.conf, or httpd-ssl.conf files. This is very easy to do if you've edited it and are a new user.

If still this fails, your last hope is to check the apache error log by clicking on the logs tab in apache's row in the xampp control panel and clicking error log.

If none of this works, don't give up! You got this!

To add a relative reference in a separate directory, such as C:/myReferences/myDLL.dll, do the following:

  2. Find the *.csproj where this reference exist and open it in a text editor
  3. Edit the < HintPath > to be equal to

SQL Server: What is the difference between CROSS JOIN and FULL OUTER JOIN?

For SQL Server, CROSS JOIN and FULL OUTER JOIN are different. CROSS JOIN is simply Cartesian Product of two tables, irrespective of any filter criteria or any condition.

FULL OUTER JOIN gives unique result set of LEFT OUTER JOIN and RIGHT OUTER JOIN of two tables. It also needs ON clause to map two columns of tables.

Table 1 contains 10 rows and Table 2 contains 20 rows with 5 rows matching on specific columns.

Then CROSS JOIN will return 10*20=200 rows in result set.

FULL OUTER JOIN will return 25 rows in result set.

The inspect module has methods for retrieving source code from python objects. Seemingly it only works if the source is located in a file though. If you had that I guess you wouldn't need to get the source from the object.


The following tests inspect.getsource(foo) using Python 3.6:

My understanding is that this isn't easy at all to do cross-browser. NEVER USE VLOOKUP. It's one of the worst performing formulas in excel. Use index match instead. It even works without sorting data, unless you have a -1 or 1 in the end of the match formula (explained more below)

  • INDEX(Sheet1!B:B, is saying INDEX B:B where B:B is the data you want to return. IE the name column.
  • Match(A2, is saying to Match A2 which is the ID you want to return the Name for.
  • Sheet1!A:A, is saying you want to match A2 to the ID column in the previous sheet
  • ,0)) is specifying you want an exact value. 0 means return an exact match to A2, -1 means return smallest value greater than or equal to A2, 1 means return the largest value that is less than or equal to A2. Keep in mind -1 and 1 have to be sorted.

Other fun facts: $ means absolute in a formula. So if you specify $B$1 when filling a formula down or over keeps that same value. If you over $B1, the B remains the same across the formula, but if you fill down, the 1 increases with the row count. Likewise, if you used B$1, filling to the right will increment the B, but keep the reference of row 1.

I also included the use of indirect in the second section. What indirect does is allow you to use the text of another cell in a formula. Since I created a named range sheet1!A:A = ID, sheet1!B:B = Name, and sheet1!C:C=Price, I can use the column name to have the exact same formula, but it uses the column heading to change the search criteria.

What is the maximum characters for the NVARCHAR(MAX)?

By default, nvarchar(MAX) values are stored exactly the same as nvarchar(4000) values would be, unless the actual length exceed 4000 characters; in that case, the in-row data is replaced by a pointer to one or more seperate pages where the data is stored.

If you anticipate data possibly exceeding 4000 character, nvarchar(MAX) is definitely the recommended choice.

Jesus... This is still a problem five years later in Visual Studio 2017. Since I'm new to WPF, I was sure the problem was somehow me, but no, everything compiled and ran correctly.

I tried rebuilding, cleaning and rebuilding, switching between x86/x64 output, rebooting Windows, cleaning the ShadowCache folder, adding ";assembly={my main assembly name}" to the XML namespace declaration, nothing worked! The single thing that did:

Put my static class of Commands (in my case the deal was about making the design discover my WPF Commands) in its separate assembly and changing the assembly name to that one's instead.

No increment operator (++) in Ruby?

Ruby has no pre/post increment/decrement operator. For instance, x++ or x-- will fail to parse. More importantly, ++x or --x will do nothing! In fact, they behave as multiple unary prefix operators: -x == ---x == -----x == ...... To increment a number, simply write x += 1.

  1. ++ and -- are NOT reserved operator in Ruby.
  2. C's increment/decrement operators are in fact hidden assignment. They affect variables, not objects. You cannot accomplish assignment via method. Ruby uses +=/-= operator instead.
  3. self cannot be a target of assignment. In addition, altering the value of integer 1 might cause severe confusion throughout the program.

Why does comparing strings using either '==' or 'is' sometimes produce a different result?

Actually, the is operator checks for identity and == operator checks for equality.

From the language reference:

Types affect almost all aspects of object behavior. Even the importance of object identity is affected in some sense: for immutable types, operations that compute new values may actually return a reference to any existing object with the same type and value, while for mutable objects this is not allowed. E.g., after a = 1; b = 1, a and b may or may not refer to the same object with the value one, depending on the implementation, but after c = []; d = [], c and d are guaranteed to refer to two different, unique, newly created empty lists. (Note that c = d = [] assigns the same object to both c and d.)

So from the above statement we can infer that the strings, which are immutable types, may fail when checked with "is" and may succeed when checked with "is".

The same applies for int and tuple which are also immutable types.

You need the static version of the library to link it.

A shared library is actually an executable in a special format with entry points specified (and some sticky addressing issues included). It does not have all the information needed to link statically.

You can't statically link a shared library (or dynamically link a static one).

The flag -static will force the linker to use static libraries (.a) instead of shared (.so) ones. But static libraries aren't always installed by default, so you may have to install the static library yourself.

Another possible approach is to use statifier or Ermine. Both tools take as input a dynamically linked executable and as output create a self-contained executable with all shared libraries embedded.

How to get a pixel's x,y coordinate color from an image?

The two previous answers demonstrate how to use Canvas and ImageData. I would like to propose an answer with runnable example and using an image processing framework, so you don't need to handle the pixel data manually.

MarvinJ provides the method image.getAlphaComponent(x,y) which simply returns the transparency value for the pixel in x,y coordinate. If this value is 0, pixel is totally transparent, values between 1 and 254 are transparency levels, finally 255 is opaque.

For demonstrating I've used the image below (300x300) with transparent background and two pixels at coordinates (0,0) and (150,150).

I got this same error working in Eclipse with Maven with the additional information

schema_reference.4: Failed to read schema document 'https://maven.apache.org/xsd/maven-4.0.0.xsd', because 1) could not find the document; 2) the document could not be read; 3) the root element of the document is not <xsd:schema>.

This was after copying in a new controller and it's interface from a Thymeleaf example. Honestly, no matter how careful I am I still am at a loss to understand how one is expected to figure this out. On a (lucky) guess I right clicked the project, clicked Maven and Update Project which cleared up the issue.
