Programs & Examples On #Resource files

Resource files are those files that are used to instruct the compiler/linker toolchain on which resources (icons, dialogs, etc.) are to be embedded in the binary being built.

MongoDB logging all queries

MongoDB has a sophisticated feature of profiling. The logging happens in system.profile collection. The logs can be seen from:

db.system.profile.find()

There are 3 logging levels (source):

  • Level 0 - the profiler is off, does not collect any data. mongod always writes operations longer than the slowOpThresholdMs threshold to its log. This is the default profiler level.
  • Level 1 - collects profiling data for slow operations only. By default slow operations are those slower than 100 milliseconds. You can modify the threshold for “slow” operations with the slowOpThresholdMs runtime option or the setParameter command. See the Specify the Threshold for Slow Operations section for more information.
  • Level 2 - collects profiling data for all database operations.

To see what profiling level the database is running in, use

db.getProfilingLevel()

and to see the status

db.getProfilingStatus()

To change the profiling status, use the command

db.setProfilingLevel(level, milliseconds)

Where level refers to the profiling level and milliseconds is the ms of which duration the queries needs to be logged. To turn off the logging, use

db.setProfilingLevel(0)

The query to look in the system profile collection for all queries that took longer than one second, ordered by timestamp descending will be

db.system.profile.find( { millis : { $gt:1000 } } ).sort( { ts : -1 } )

How to fully clean bin and obj folders within Visual Studio?

This site: https://sachabarbs.wordpress.com/2014/10/24/powershell-to-clean-visual-studio-binobj-folders/ uses William Kempf's powershell commands to remove any bin and obj folders from the current directory and sub directories. It should be possible to run it from the root of the drive.

Here is William's version

 gci -inc bin,obj -rec | rm -rec -force

In William's own words:

That wipes out all of the “bin” and “obj” directories in the current directory and every subdirectory. Super useful to run in your workspace directory to get to a “clean” state, especially when someone messes up and there’s something that a Clean or Rebuild inside the IDE doesn’t catch.

For those of you reading that may not know, PowerShell supports command aliases, here it is rewritten again not using the aliases

Get-ChildItem -inc bin,obj -rec | Remove-Item -rec -force

NOTE : You should have this stored in a PowerShell file and place that file at the root of your solution (where the .sln file resides), and then run it when you want a proper clean (not the micky mouse one that VisualStudio does, and reports success too).

Find value in an array

Thanks for replies.

I did like this:

puts 'find' if array.include?(value)

NSAttributedString add text alignment

 NSMutableParagraphStyle *paragraphStyle = NSMutableParagraphStyle.new;
 paragraphStyle.alignment                = NSTextAlignmentCenter;

 NSAttributedString *attributedString   =
[NSAttributedString.alloc initWithString:@"someText"
                              attributes:
         @{NSParagraphStyleAttributeName:paragraphStyle}];

Swift 4.2

let paragraphStyle: NSMutableParagraphStyle = NSMutableParagraphStyle()
    paragraphStyle.alignment = NSTextAlignment.center

    let attributedString = NSAttributedString(string: "someText", attributes: [NSAttributedString.Key.paragraphStyle : paragraphStyle])

React: trigger onChange if input value is changing by state?

The other answers talked about direct binding in render hence I want to add few points regarding that.

You are not recommended to bind the function directly in render or anywhere else in the component except in constructor. Because for every function binding a new function/object will be created in webpack bundle js file hence the bundle size will grow. Your component will re-render for many reasons like when you do setState, new props received, when you do this.forceUpdate() etc. So if you directly bind your function in render it will always create a new function. Instead do function binding always in constructor and call the reference wherever required. In this way it creates new function only once because constructor gets called only once per component.

How you should do is something like below

constructor(props){
  super(props);
  this.state = {
    value: 'random text'
  }
  this.handleChange = this.handleChange.bind(this);
}

handleChange (e) {
  console.log('handle change called');
  this.setState({value: e.target.value});
}

<input value={this.state.value} onChange={this.handleChange}/>

You can also use arrow functions but arrow functions also does create new function every time the component re-renders in certain cases. You should know about when to use arrow function and when are not suppose to. For detailed explation about when to use arrow functions check the accepted answer here

Android: How to overlay a bitmap and draw over a bitmap?

I think this example will definitely help you overlay a transparent image on top of another image. This is made possible by drawing both the images on canvas and returning a bitmap image.

Read more or download demo here

private Bitmap createSingleImageFromMultipleImages(Bitmap firstImage, Bitmap secondImage){

        Bitmap result = Bitmap.createBitmap(firstImage.getWidth(), firstImage.getHeight(), firstImage.getConfig());
        Canvas canvas = new Canvas(result);
        canvas.drawBitmap(firstImage, 0f, 0f, null);
        canvas.drawBitmap(secondImage, 10, 10, null);
        return result;
    }

and call the above function on button click and pass the two images to our function as shown below

public void buttonMerge(View view) {

        Bitmap bigImage = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.img1);
        Bitmap smallImage = BitmapFactory.decodeResource(getResources(), R.drawable.img2);
        Bitmap mergedImages = createSingleImageFromMultipleImages(bigImage, smallImage);

        img.setImageBitmap(mergedImages);
    }

For more than two images, you can follow this link, how to merge multiple images programmatically on android

xlsxwriter: is there a way to open an existing worksheet in my workbook?

You cannot append to an existing xlsx file with xlsxwriter.

There is a module called openpyxl which allows you to read and write to preexisting excel file, but I am sure that the method to do so involves reading from the excel file, storing all the information somehow (database or arrays), and then rewriting when you call workbook.close() which will then write all of the information to your xlsx file.

Similarly, you can use a method of your own to "append" to xlsx documents. I recently had to append to a xlsx file because I had a lot of different tests in which I had GPS data coming in to a main worksheet, and then I had to append a new sheet each time a test started as well. The only way I could get around this without openpyxl was to read the excel file with xlrd and then run through the rows and columns...

i.e.

cells = []
for row in range(sheet.nrows):
    cells.append([])
    for col in range(sheet.ncols):
        cells[row].append(workbook.cell(row, col).value)

You don't need arrays, though. For example, this works perfectly fine:

import xlrd
import xlsxwriter

from os.path import expanduser
home = expanduser("~")

# this writes test data to an excel file
wb = xlsxwriter.Workbook("{}/Desktop/test.xlsx".format(home))
sheet1 = wb.add_worksheet()
for row in range(10):
    for col in range(20):
        sheet1.write(row, col, "test ({}, {})".format(row, col))
wb.close()

# open the file for reading
wbRD = xlrd.open_workbook("{}/Desktop/test.xlsx".format(home))
sheets = wbRD.sheets()

# open the same file for writing (just don't write yet)
wb = xlsxwriter.Workbook("{}/Desktop/test.xlsx".format(home))

# run through the sheets and store sheets in workbook
# this still doesn't write to the file yet
for sheet in sheets: # write data from old file
    newSheet = wb.add_worksheet(sheet.name)
    for row in range(sheet.nrows):
        for col in range(sheet.ncols):
            newSheet.write(row, col, sheet.cell(row, col).value)

for row in range(10, 20): # write NEW data
    for col in range(20):
        newSheet.write(row, col, "test ({}, {})".format(row, col))
wb.close() # THIS writes

However, I found that it was easier to read the data and store into a 2-dimensional array because I was manipulating the data and was receiving input over and over again and did not want to write to the excel file until it the test was over (which you could just as easily do with xlsxwriter since that is probably what they do anyway until you call .close()).

Can clearInterval() be called inside setInterval()?

Yes you can. You can even test it:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var i = 0;_x000D_
var timer = setInterval(function() {_x000D_
  console.log(++i);_x000D_
  if (i === 5) clearInterval(timer);_x000D_
  console.log('post-interval'); //this will still run after clearing_x000D_
}, 200);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

In this example, this timer clears when i reaches 5.

Should you commit .gitignore into the Git repos?

Committing .gitignore can be very useful but you want to make sure you don't modify it too much thereafter especially if you regularly switch between branches. If you do you might get cases where files are ignored in a branch and not in the other, forcing you to go manually delete or rename files in your work directory because a checkout failed as it would overwrite a non-tracked file.

Therefore yes, do commit your .gitignore, but not before you are reasonably sure it won't change that much thereafter.

How to solve error "Missing `secret_key_base` for 'production' environment" (Rails 4.1)

What I did : On my production server, I create a config file (confthin.yml) for Thin (I'm using it) and add the following information :

environment: production
user: www-data
group: www-data
SECRET_KEY_BASE: mysecretkeyproduction

I then launch the app with

thin start -C /whereeveristhefieonprod/configthin.yml

Work like a charm and then no need to have the secret key on version control

Hope it could help, but I'm sure the same thing could be done with Unicorn and others.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysqli_connect()

So this may not be the issue for you, but I was struggling with this error. I discovered what was causing my problem, though I can't really explain as to why.

For me, mysqli_connect was working fine where the connection was made on pages in any various sub-directory. For some reason though, the same code referenced on pages in the root directory was returning this error. The strange thing is that it was working fine on my localhost environment in MAMP in the root directory, however on my shared host it was not.

After struggling to figure out what was giving me "Error 500" white screen from this "PHP Fatal Error," I went through the code and stumbled upon this code in the error handling that was suggested by the PHP Manual (https://www.php.net/manual/en/mysqli.error.php).

if (!mysqli_query($link, "SET a=1")) {
    printf("Error message: %s\n", mysqli_error($link));
}

I randomly decided to remove it and, voila, connection to the database working in root directories. Maybe someone smarter than me can explain this, for anyone struggling with a similar issue.

Get counts of all tables in a schema

This can be done with a single statement and some XML magic:

select table_name,
       to_number(extractvalue(xmltype(dbms_xmlgen.getxml('select count(*) c from '||owner||'.'||table_name)),'/ROWSET/ROW/C')) as count
from all_tables
where owner = 'FOOBAR'

Python - A keyboard command to stop infinite loop?

Ctrl+C is what you need. If it didn't work, hit it harder. :-) Of course, you can also just close the shell window.

Edit: You didn't mention the circumstances. As a last resort, you could write a batch file that contains taskkill /im python.exe, and put it on your desktop, Start menu, etc. and run it when you need to kill a runaway script. Of course, it will kill all Python processes, so be careful.

Where to find 64 bit version of chromedriver.exe for Selenium WebDriver?

There is no separate chromedriver binary for Windows 64 bit. Chromedriver 32 bit binary works for both 32 as well as 64 bit versions of Windows. As of today, you can find the latest version of chromedriver Windows binary at https://chromedriver.storage.googleapis.com/2.25/chromedriver_win32.zip

ng-change not working on a text input

One can also bind a function with ng-change event listener, if they need to run a bit more complex logic.

<div ng-app="myApp" ng-controller="myCtrl">
        <input type='text' ng-model='name' ng-change='change()'>
        <br/> <span>changed {{counter}} times </span>
 </div>

...

var app = angular.module('myApp', []);
app.controller('myCtrl', function($scope) {
      $scope.name = 'Australia';
      $scope.counter = 0;
      $scope.change = function() {
        $scope.counter++;
      };
});

Difference between staticmethod and classmethod

The definitive guide on how to use static, class or abstract methods in Python is one good link for this topic, and summary it as following.

@staticmethod function is nothing more than a function defined inside a class. It is callable without instantiating the class first. It’s definition is immutable via inheritance.

  • Python does not have to instantiate a bound-method for object.
  • It eases the readability of the code, and it does not depend on the state of object itself;

@classmethod function also callable without instantiating the class, but its definition follows Sub class, not Parent class, via inheritance, can be overridden by subclass. That’s because the first argument for @classmethod function must always be cls (class).

  • Factory methods, that are used to create an instance for a class using for example some sort of pre-processing.
  • Static methods calling static methods: if you split a static methods in several static methods, you shouldn't hard-code the class name but use class methods

PHP Parse HTML code

Use PHP Document Object Model:

<?php
   $str = '<h1>T1</h1>Lorem ipsum.<h1>T2</h1>The quick red fox...<h1>T3</h1>... jumps over the lazy brown FROG';
   $DOM = new DOMDocument;
   $DOM->loadHTML($str);

   //get all H1
   $items = $DOM->getElementsByTagName('h1');

   //display all H1 text
   for ($i = 0; $i < $items->length; $i++)
        echo $items->item($i)->nodeValue . "<br/>";
?>

This outputs as:

 T1
 T2
 T3

[EDIT]: After OP Clarification:

If you want the content like Lorem ipsum. etc, you can directly use this regex:

<?php
   $str = '<h1>T1</h1>Lorem ipsum.<h1>T2</h1>The quick red fox...<h1>T3</h1>... jumps over the lazy brown FROG';
   echo preg_replace("#<h1.*?>.*?</h1>#", "", $str);
?>

this outputs:

Lorem ipsum.The quick red fox...... jumps over the lazy brown FROG

Rails 4 - passing variable to partial

You need the full render partial syntax if you are passing locals

<%= render @users, :locals => {:size => 30} %>

Becomes

<%= render :partial => 'users', :collection => @users, :locals => {:size => 30} %>

Or to use the new hash syntax

<%= render partial: 'users', collection: @users, locals: {size: 30} %>

Which I think is much more readable

Are there constants in JavaScript?

Checkout https://www.npmjs.com/package/constjs, which provides three functions to create enum, string const and bitmap. The returned result is either frozen or sealed thus you can't change/delete the properties after they are created, you can neither add new properties to the returned result

create Enum:

var ConstJs = require('constjs');

var Colors = ConstJs.enum("blue red");

var myColor = Colors.blue;

console.log(myColor.isBlue()); // output true
console.log(myColor.is('blue')); // output true
console.log(myColor.is('BLUE')); // output true
console.log(myColor.is(0)); // output true
console.log(myColor.is(Colors.blue)); // output true

console.log(myColor.isRed()); // output false
console.log(myColor.is('red')); // output false

console.log(myColor._id); // output blue
console.log(myColor.name()); // output blue
console.log(myColor.toString()); // output blue

// See how CamelCase is used to generate the isXxx() functions
var AppMode = ConstJs.enum('SIGN_UP, LOG_IN, FORGOT_PASSWORD');
var curMode = AppMode.LOG_IN;

console.log(curMode.isLogIn()); // output true
console.log(curMode.isSignUp()); // output false
console.log(curMode.isForgotPassword()); // output false

Create String const:

var ConstJs = require('constjs');

var Weekdays = ConstJs.const("Mon, Tue, Wed");
console.log(Weekdays); // output {Mon: 'Mon', Tue: 'Tue', Wed: 'Wed'}

var today = Weekdays.Wed;
console.log(today); // output: 'Wed';

Create Bitmap:

var ConstJs = require('constjs');

var ColorFlags = ConstJs.bitmap("blue red");
console.log(ColorFlags.blue); // output false

var StyleFlags = ConstJs.bitmap(true, "rustic model minimalist");
console.log(StyleFlags.rustic); // output true

var CityFlags = ConstJs.bitmap({Chengdu: true, Sydney: false});
console.log(CityFlags.Chengdu); //output true
console.log(CityFlags.Sydney); // output false

var DayFlags = ConstJs.bitmap(true, {Mon: false, Tue: true});
console.log(DayFlags.Mon); // output false. Default val wont override specified val if the type is boolean

How to change permissions for a folder and its subfolders/files in one step?

chmod 755 -R /opt/lampp/htdocs will recursively set the permissions. There's no way to set the permissions for files automatically in only this directory that are created after you set the permissions, but you could change your system-wide default file permissions with by setting umask 022.

How to convert date into this 'yyyy-MM-dd' format in angular 2

I would suggest you to have a look into Moment.js if you have trouble with Angular. At least it is a quick workaround without spending too much time.

Angular2: Cannot read property 'name' of undefined

In order to avoid this, you could as well initialize the selectedHero member of your component to an empty object (instead of leaving it undefined).

In your example code, that would give something like this :

export class AppComponent {
  title = 'Tour of Heroes';
  heroes = HEROES;
  selectedHero:Hero = new Hero();

  onSelect(hero: Hero):void{
      this.selectedHero = hero;
  }
}

How can I export the schema of a database in PostgreSQL?

pg_dump -d <databasename> -h <hostname> -p <port> -n <schemaname> -f <location of the dump file>

Please notice that you have sufficient privilege to access that schema. If you want take backup as specific user add user name in that command preceded by -U

PHP Warning: Module already loaded in Unknown on line 0

You should have a /etc/php2/conf.d directory (At least on Ubuntu I do) containing a bunch of .ini files which all get loaded when php runs. These files can contain duplicate settings that conflict with settings in php.ini. In my PHP installation I notice a file conf.d/20-intl.ini with an extension=intl.so setting. I bet that's your conflict.

How do I find out where login scripts live?

The default location for logon scripts is the netlogon share of a domain controller. On the server this is located:

%SystemRoot%'SYSVOL'sysvol''scripts

It can presumably be changes from this default but I've never met anyone that had a reason to.

To get list of domain controllers programatically see this article: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/scriptcenter/resources/qanda/dec04/hey1216.mspx

How to use JavaScript variables in jQuery selectors?

$(`input[id="${this.name}"]`).hide();

As you're using an ID, this would perform better

$(`#${this.name}`).hide();

I highly recommend being more specific with your approach to hiding elements via button clicks. I would opt for using data-attributes instead. For example

<input id="bx" type="text">
<button type="button" data-target="#bx" data-method="hide">Hide some input</button>

Then, in your JavaScript

// using event delegation so no need to wrap it in .ready()
$(document).on('click', 'button[data-target]', function() {
    var $this = $(this),
        target = $($this.data('target')),
        method = $this.data('method') || 'hide';
    target[method]();
});

Now you can completely control which element you're targeting and what happens to it via the HTML. For example, you could use data-target=".some-class" and data-method="fadeOut" to fade-out a collection of elements.

Use bash to find first folder name that contains a string

for example:

dir1=$(find . -name \*foo\* -type d -maxdepth 1 -print | head -n1)
echo "$dir1"

or (For the better shell solution see Adrian Frühwirth's answer)

for dir1 in *
do
    [[ -d "$dir1" && "$dir1" =~ foo ]] && break
    dir1=        #fix based on comment
done
echo "$dir1"

or

dir1=$(find . -type d -maxdepth 1 -print | grep 'foo' | head -n1)
echo "$dir1"

Edited head -n1 based on @ hek2mgl comment

Next based on @chepner's comments

dir1=$(find . -type d -maxdepth 1 -print | grep -m1 'foo')

or

dir1=$(find . -name \*foo\* -type d -maxdepth 1 -print -quit)

Read the current full URL with React?

You are getting undefined because you probably have the components outside React Router.

Remember that you need to make sure that the component from which you are calling this.props.location is inside a <Route /> component such as this:

<Route path="/dashboard" component={Dashboard} />

Then inside the Dashboard component, you have access to this.props.location...

<a href="<%= Url.Action("Index", "Home") %>"><span>Text</span></a>
<a href="@Url.Action("Index", "Home")"><span>Text</span></a>

And to do a blank url you could have

<a href="<%= Url.Action("Index", "Home") %>"></a>

ASP.NET email validator regex

Here is the regex for the Internet Email Address using the RegularExpressionValidator in .NET

\w+([-+.']\w+)*@\w+([-.]\w+)*\.\w+([-.]\w+)*

By the way if you put a RegularExpressionValidator on the page and go to the design view there is a ValidationExpression field that you can use to choose from a list of expressions provided by .NET. Once you choose the expression you want there is a Validation expression: textbox that holds the regex used for the validator

Dealing with "Xerces hell" in Java/Maven?

Mock MVC - Add Request Parameter to test

When i analyzed your code. I have also faced the same problem but my problem is if i give value for both first and last name means it is working fine. but when i give only one value means it says 400. anyway use the .andDo(print()) method to find out the error

public void testGetUserByName() throws Exception {
    String firstName = "Jack";
    String lastName = "s";
    this.userClientObject = client.createClient();
    mockMvc.perform(get("/byName")
            .sessionAttr("userClientObject", this.userClientObject)
            .param("firstName", firstName)
            .param("lastName", lastName)
    ).andDo(print())
     .andExpect(status().isOk())
            .andExpect(content().contentType("application/json"))
            .andExpect(jsonPath("$[0].id").exists())
            .andExpect(jsonPath("$[0].fn").value("Marge"));
}

If your problem is org.springframework.web.bind.missingservletrequestparameterexception you have to change your code to

@RequestMapping(value = "/byName", method = RequestMethod.GET)
    @ResponseStatus(HttpStatus.OK)
    public
    @ResponseBody
    String getUserByName(
        @RequestParam( value="firstName",required = false) String firstName,
        @RequestParam(value="lastName",required = false) String lastName,
        @ModelAttribute("userClientObject") UserClient userClient)
    {

        return client.getUserByName(userClient, firstName, lastName);

XPath to select element based on childs child value

Almost there. In your predicate, you want a relative path, so change

./book[/author/name = 'John']

to either

./book[author/name = 'John']

or

./book[./author/name = 'John']

and you will match your element. Your current predicate goes back to the root of the document to look for an author.

Making sure at least one checkbox is checked

You should avoid having two checkboxes with the same name if you plan to reference them like document.FC.c1. If you have multiple checkboxes named c1 how will the browser know which you are referring to?

Here's a non-jQuery solution to check if any checkboxes on the page are checked.

var checkboxes = document.querySelectorAll('input[type="checkbox"]');
var checkedOne = Array.prototype.slice.call(checkboxes).some(x => x.checked);

You need the Array.prototype.slice.call part to convert the NodeList returned by document.querySelectorAll into an array that you can call some on.

list all files in the folder and also sub folders

Using you current code, make this tweak:

public void listf(String directoryName, List<File> files) {
    File directory = new File(directoryName);

    // Get all files from a directory.
    File[] fList = directory.listFiles();
    if(fList != null)
        for (File file : fList) {
            if (file.isFile()) {
                files.add(file);
            } else if (file.isDirectory()) {
                listf(file.getAbsolutePath(), files);
            }
        }
    }
}

.NET Console Application Exit Event

Here is a complete, very simple .Net solution that works in all versions of windows. Simply paste it into a new project, run it and try CTRL-C to view how it handles it:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Runtime.InteropServices;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading;

namespace TestTrapCtrlC{
    public class Program{
        static bool exitSystem = false;

        #region Trap application termination
        [DllImport("Kernel32")]
        private static extern bool SetConsoleCtrlHandler(EventHandler handler, bool add);

        private delegate bool EventHandler(CtrlType sig);
        static EventHandler _handler;

        enum CtrlType {
         CTRL_C_EVENT = 0,
         CTRL_BREAK_EVENT = 1,
         CTRL_CLOSE_EVENT = 2,
         CTRL_LOGOFF_EVENT = 5,
         CTRL_SHUTDOWN_EVENT = 6
         }

        private static bool Handler(CtrlType sig) {
            Console.WriteLine("Exiting system due to external CTRL-C, or process kill, or shutdown");

            //do your cleanup here
            Thread.Sleep(5000); //simulate some cleanup delay

            Console.WriteLine("Cleanup complete");

            //allow main to run off
             exitSystem = true;

            //shutdown right away so there are no lingering threads
            Environment.Exit(-1);

            return true;
        }
        #endregion

        static void Main(string[] args) {
            // Some biolerplate to react to close window event, CTRL-C, kill, etc
            _handler += new EventHandler(Handler);
            SetConsoleCtrlHandler(_handler, true);

            //start your multi threaded program here
            Program p = new Program();
            p.Start();

            //hold the console so it doesn’t run off the end
            while(!exitSystem) {
                Thread.Sleep(500);
            }
        }

        public void Start() {
            // start a thread and start doing some processing

Groovy - How to compare the string?

The shortest way (will print "not same" because String comparison is case sensitive):

def compareString = {

List<T> OrderBy Alphabetical Order

You can also use

model.People = model.People.OrderBy(x => x.Name).ToList();

How to write a PHP ternary operator

You wouldn’t: it’s messy and hard to read.

You’re looking for the switch statement in the first case. The second is fine as it is but still could be converted for consistency

Ternary statements are much more suited to boolean values and alternating logic.

How to make parent wait for all child processes to finish?

POSIX defines a function: wait(NULL);. It's the shorthand for waitpid(-1, NULL, 0);, which will suspends the execution of the calling process until any one child process exits. Here, 1st argument of waitpid indicates wait for any child process to end.

In your case, have the parent call it from within your else branch.

How does Python's super() work with multiple inheritance?

I would like to add to what @Visionscaper says at the top:

Third --> First --> object --> Second --> object

In this case the interpreter doesnt filter out the object class because its duplicated, rather its because Second appears in a head position and doesnt appear in the tail position in a hierarchy subset. While object only appears in tail positions and is not considered a strong position in C3 algorithm to determine priority.

The linearisation(mro) of a class C, L(C), is the

  • the Class C
  • plus the merge of
    • linearisation of its parents P1, P2, .. = L(P1, P2, ...) and
    • the list of its parents P1, P2, ..

Linearised Merge is done by selecting the common classes that appears as the head of lists and not the tail since order matters(will become clear below)

The linearisation of Third can be computed as follows:

    L(O)  := [O]  // the linearization(mro) of O(object), because O has no parents

    L(First)  :=  [First] + merge(L(O), [O])
               =  [First] + merge([O], [O])
               =  [First, O]

    // Similarly,
    L(Second)  := [Second, O]

    L(Third)   := [Third] + merge(L(First), L(Second), [First, Second])
                = [Third] + merge([First, O], [Second, O], [First, Second])
// class First is a good candidate for the first merge step, because it only appears as the head of the first and last lists
// class O is not a good candidate for the next merge step, because it also appears in the tails of list 1 and 2,
                = [Third, First] + merge([O], [Second, O], [Second])
// class Second is a good candidate for the second merge step, because it appears as the head of the list 2 and 3
                = [Third, First, Second] + merge([O], [O])
                = [Third, First, Second, O]

Thus for a super() implementation in the following code:

class First(object):
  def __init__(self):
    super(First, self).__init__()
    print "first"

class Second(object):
  def __init__(self):
    super(Second, self).__init__()
    print "second"

class Third(First, Second):
  def __init__(self):
    super(Third, self).__init__()
    print "that's it"

it becomes obvious how this method will be resolved

Third.__init__() ---> First.__init__() ---> Second.__init__() --->
Object.__init__() ---> returns ---> Second.__init__() -
prints "second" - returns ---> First.__init__() -
prints "first" - returns ---> Third.__init__() - prints "that's it"

How to enable bulk permission in SQL Server

Try GRANT ADMINISTER BULK OPERATIONS TO [server_login]. It is a server level permission, not a database level. This has fixed a similar issue for me in that past (using OPENROWSET I believe).

How to store arrays in MySQL?

In MySQL, use the JSON type.

Contra the answers above, the SQL standard has included array types for almost twenty years; they are useful, even if MySQL has not implemented them.

In your example, however, you'll likely want to create three tables: person and fruit, then person_fruit to join them.

DROP TABLE IF EXISTS person_fruit;
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS person;
DROP TABLE IF EXISTS fruit;

CREATE TABLE person (
  person_id   INT           NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  person_name VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (person_id)
);

CREATE TABLE fruit (
  fruit_id    INT           NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  fruit_name  VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  fruit_color VARCHAR(1000) NOT NULL,
  fruit_price INT           NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (fruit_id)
);

CREATE TABLE person_fruit (
  pf_id     INT NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
  pf_person INT NOT NULL,
  pf_fruit  INT NOT NULL,
  PRIMARY KEY (pf_id),
  FOREIGN KEY (pf_person) REFERENCES person (person_id),
  FOREIGN KEY (pf_fruit) REFERENCES fruit (fruit_id)
);

INSERT INTO person (person_name)
VALUES
  ('John'),
  ('Mary'),
  ('John'); -- again

INSERT INTO fruit (fruit_name, fruit_color, fruit_price)
VALUES
  ('apple', 'red', 1),
  ('orange', 'orange', 2),
  ('pineapple', 'yellow', 3);

INSERT INTO person_fruit (pf_person, pf_fruit)
VALUES
  (1, 1),
  (1, 2),
  (2, 2),
  (2, 3),
  (3, 1),
  (3, 2),
  (3, 3);

If you wish to associate the person with an array of fruits, you can do so with a view:

DROP VIEW IF EXISTS person_fruit_summary;
CREATE VIEW person_fruit_summary AS
  SELECT
    person_id                                                                                              AS pfs_person_id,
    max(person_name)                                                                                       AS pfs_person_name,
    cast(concat('[', group_concat(json_quote(fruit_name) ORDER BY fruit_name SEPARATOR ','), ']') as json) AS pfs_fruit_name_array
  FROM
    person
    INNER JOIN person_fruit
      ON person.person_id = person_fruit.pf_person
    INNER JOIN fruit
      ON person_fruit.pf_fruit = fruit.fruit_id
  GROUP BY
    person_id;

The view shows the following data:

+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
| pfs_person_id | pfs_person_name | pfs_fruit_name_array             |
+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+
|             1 | John            | ["apple", "orange"]              |
|             2 | Mary            | ["orange", "pineapple"]          |
|             3 | John            | ["apple", "orange", "pineapple"] |
+---------------+-----------------+----------------------------------+

In 5.7.22, you'll want to use JSON_ARRAYAGG, rather than hack the array together from a string.

What's the difference between Thread start() and Runnable run()

The separate start() and run() methods in the Thread class provide two ways to create threaded programs. The start() method starts the execution of the new thread and calls the run() method. The start() method returns immediately and the new thread normally continues until the run() method returns.

The Thread class' run() method does nothing, so sub-classes should override the method with code to execute in the second thread. If a Thread is instantiated with a Runnable argument, the thread's run() method executes the run() method of the Runnable object in the new thread instead.

Depending on the nature of your threaded program, calling the Thread run() method directly can give the same output as calling via the start() method, but in the latter case the code is actually executed in a new thread.

What in the world are Spring beans?

Well you understood it partially. You have to tailor the beans according to your need and inform Spring container to manage it when required, by using a methodology populalrly known as IoC (Inversion of Control) coined by Martin Fowler, also known as Dependency Injection (DI).

You wire the beans in a way, so that you do not have to take care of the instantiating or evaluate any dependency on the bean. This is popularly known as Hollywood Principle.

Google is the best tool to explore more on this in addition to the links you would get flooded with here in this question. :)

Setting default permissions for newly created files and sub-directories under a directory in Linux?

When would you use the Builder Pattern?

Consider a restaurant. The creation of "today's meal" is a factory pattern, because you tell the kitchen "get me today's meal" and the kitchen (factory) decides what object to generate, based on hidden criteria.

The builder appears if you order a custom pizza. In this case, the waiter tells the chef (builder) "I need a pizza; add cheese, onions and bacon to it!" Thus, the builder exposes the attributes the generated object should have, but hides how to set them.

C free(): invalid pointer

From where did you get the idea that you need to free(token) and free(tk)? You don't. strsep() doesn't allocate memory, it only returns pointers inside the original string. Of course, those are not pointers allocated by malloc() (or similar), so free()ing them is undefined behavior. You only need to free(s) when you are done with the entire string.

Also note that you don't need dynamic memory allocation at all in your example. You can avoid strdup() and free() altogether by simply writing char *s = p;.

Can I dispatch an action in reducer?

You might try using a library like redux-saga. It allows for a very clean way to sequence async functions, fire off actions, use delays and more. It is very powerful!

How to secure MongoDB with username and password

This is what i did for ubuntu 20.04 and mongodb enterprise 4.4.2:

  1. start mongo shell by typing mongo in terminal.

  2. use admin database:

use admin
  1. create a new user and assign your intended role:
use admin
db.createUser(
  {
    user: "myUserAdmin",
    pwd: passwordPrompt(), // or cleartext password
    roles: [ { role: "userAdminAnyDatabase", db: "admin" }, "readWriteAnyDatabase" ]
  }
)
  1. exit mongo and add the following line to etc/mongod.conf:
security:
    authorization: enabled
  1. restart mongodb server

(optional) 6.If you want your user to have root access you can either specify it when creating your user like:

db.createUser(
  {
    user: "myUserAdmin",
    pwd: passwordPrompt(), // or cleartext password
    roles: [ { role: "userAdminAnyDatabase", db: "admin" }, "readWriteAnyDatabase" ]
  }
)

or you can change user role using:

db.grantRolesToUser('admin', [{ role: 'root', db: 'admin' }])

SQL select * from column where year = 2010

select * from mytable where year(Columnx) = 2010

Regarding index usage (answering Simon's comment):

if you have an index on Columnx, SQLServer WON'T use it if you use the function "year" (or any other function).

There are two possible solutions for it, one is doing the search by interval like Columnx>='01012010' and Columnx<='31122010' and another one is to create a calculated column with the year(Columnx) expression, index it, and then do the filter on this new column

How to implement my very own URI scheme on Android

Another alternate approach to Diego's is to use a library:

https://github.com/airbnb/DeepLinkDispatch

You can easily declare the URIs you'd like to handle and the parameters you'd like to extract through annotations on the Activity, like:

@DeepLink("path/to/what/i/want")
public class SomeActivity extends Activity {
  ...
}

As a plus, the query parameters will also be passed along to the Activity as well.

Hibernate, @SequenceGenerator and allocationSize

allocationSize=1 It is a micro optimization before getting query Hibernate tries to assign value in the range of allocationSize and so try to avoid querying database for sequence. But this query will be executed every time if you set it to 1. This hardly makes any difference since if your data base is accessed by some other application then it will create issues if same id is used by another application meantime .

Next generation of Sequence Id is based on allocationSize.

By defualt it is kept as 50 which is too much. It will also only help if your going to have near about 50 records in one session which are not persisted and which will be persisted using this particular session and transation.

So you should always use allocationSize=1 while using SequenceGenerator. As for most of underlying databases sequence is always incremented by 1.

Changing the browser zoom level

I would say not possible in most browsers, at least not without some additional plugins. And in any case I would try to avoid relying on the browser's zoom as the implementations vary (some browsers only zoom the fonts, others zoom the images, too etc). Unless you don't care much about user experience.

If you need a more reliable zoom, then consider zooming the page fonts and images with JavaScript and CSS, or possibly on the server side. The image and layout scaling issues could be addressed this way. Of course, this requires a bit more work.

javascript regex for password containing at least 8 characters, 1 number, 1 upper and 1 lowercase

Using individual regular expressions to test the different parts would be considerably easier than trying to get one single regular expression to cover all of them. It also makes it easier to add or remove validation criteria.

Note, also, that your usage of .filter() was incorrect; it will always return a jQuery object (which is considered truthy in JavaScript). Personally, I'd use an .each() loop to iterate over all of the inputs, and report individual pass/fail statuses. Something like the below:

$(".buttonClick").click(function () {

    $("input[type=text]").each(function () {
        var validated =  true;
        if(this.value.length < 8)
            validated = false;
        if(!/\d/.test(this.value))
            validated = false;
        if(!/[a-z]/.test(this.value))
            validated = false;
        if(!/[A-Z]/.test(this.value))
            validated = false;
        if(/[^0-9a-zA-Z]/.test(this.value))
            validated = false;
        $('div').text(validated ? "pass" : "fail");
        // use DOM traversal to select the correct div for this input above
    });
});

Sorting std::map using value

I like the the answer from Oli (flipping a map), but seems it has a problem: the container map does not allow two elements with the same key.

A solution is to make dst the type multimap. Another one is to dump src into a vector and sort the vector. The former requires minor modifications to Oli's answer, and the latter can be implemented using STL copy concisely

#include <iostream>
#include <utility>
#include <map>
#include <vector>
#include <algorithm>

using namespace std;

int main() {
  map<int, int> m;
  m[11] = 1;
  m[22] = 2;
  m[33] = 3;

  vector<pair<int, int> > v;
  copy(m.begin(),
       m.end(),
       back_inserter<vector<pair<int, int> > >(v));

  for (size_t i = 0; i < v.size(); ++i) {
    cout << v[i].first << " , " << v[i].second << "\n";
  }

  return 0;
};

string.Replace in AngularJs

In Javascript method names are camel case, so it's replace, not Replace:

$scope.newString = oldString.replace("stackover","NO");

Note that contrary to how the .NET Replace method works, the Javascript replace method replaces only the first occurrence if you are using a string as first parameter. If you want to replace all occurrences you need to use a regular expression so that you can specify the global (g) flag:

$scope.newString = oldString.replace(/stackover/g,"NO");

See this example.

No, it is not okay to put a link element in the body tag. See the specification (links to the HTML4.01 specs, but I believe it is true for all versions of HTML):

Trim last character from a string

Slightly modified version of @Damian Leszczynski - Vash that will make sure that only a specific character will be removed.

public static class StringExtensions
{
    public static string TrimLastCharacter(this string str, char character)
    {
        if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(str) || str[str.Length - 1] != character)
        {
            return str;
        }
        return str.Substring(0, str.Length - 1);
    }
}

What is a Python equivalent of PHP's var_dump()?

PHP's var_export() usually shows a serialized version of the object that can be exec()'d to re-create the object. The closest thing to that in Python is repr()

"For many types, this function makes an attempt to return a string that would yield an object with the same value when passed to eval() [...]"

Cannot read property 'length' of null (javascript)

The proper test is:

if (capital != null && capital.length < 1) {

This ensures that capital is always non null, when you perform the length check.

Also, as the comments suggest, capital is null because you never initialize it.

Java - ignore exception and continue

Printing the STACK trace, logging it or send message to the user, are very bad ways to process the exceptions. Does any one can describe solutions to fix the exception in proper steps then can trying the broken instruction again?

How to get StackPanel's children to fill maximum space downward?

An alternative method is to use a Grid with one column and n rows. Set all the rows heights to Auto, and the bottom-most row height to 1*.

I prefer this method because I've found Grids have better layout performance than DockPanels, StackPanels, and WrapPanels. But unless you're using them in an ItemTemplate (where the layout is being performed for a large number of items), you'll probably never notice.

Change Screen Orientation programmatically using a Button

A working code:

private void changeScreenOrientation() {
    int orientation = yourActivityName.this.getResources().getConfiguration().orientation;
    if (orientation == Configuration.ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE) {
        setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_PORTRAIT);
        showMediaDescription();
    } else {
        setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_LANDSCAPE);
        hideMediaDescription();
    }
    if (Settings.System.getInt(getContentResolver(),
            Settings.System.ACCELEROMETER_ROTATION, 0) == 1) {
        Handler handler = new Handler();
        handler.postDelayed(new Runnable() {
            @Override
            public void run() {
                setRequestedOrientation(ActivityInfo.SCREEN_ORIENTATION_SENSOR);
            }
        }, 4000);

Structuring online documentation for a REST API

That's a very complex question for a simple answer.

You may want to take a look at existing API frameworks, like Swagger Specification (OpenAPI), and services like apiary.io and apiblueprint.org.

Also, here's an example of the same REST API described, organized and even styled in three different ways. It may be a good start for you to learn from existing common ways.

At the very top level I think quality REST API docs require at least the following:

  • a list of all your API endpoints (base/relative URLs)
  • corresponding HTTP GET/POST/... method type for each endpoint
  • request/response MIME-type (how to encode params and parse replies)
  • a sample request/response, including HTTP headers
  • type and format specified for all params, including those in the URL, body and headers
  • a brief text description and important notes
  • a short code snippet showing the use of the endpoint in popular web programming languages

Also there are a lot of JSON/XML-based doc frameworks which can parse your API definition or schema and generate a convenient set of docs for you. But the choice for a doc generation system depends on your project, language, development environment and many other things.

If you encounter this apparent index corruption in a running system, you can work around it by deleting all files called segments.gen. It is advisory only, and Lucene can recover correctly without it.

How can I stop redis-server?

If you know on which port(default:6379) your redis server is running you can go with option 1 or you can check your redis process and you can kill with option 2

option 1:
Kill process on port:

check     : sudo lsof -t -i:6379
kill      : sudo kill `sudo lsof -t -i:6379`

option 2:
Find the previously Running Redis Server:

 ps auxx | grep redis-server

Kill the specific process by finding PID (Process ID) - Redis Sever

kill -9 PID

Now start your redis server with

redis-server /path/to/redis.conf

Confirmation before closing of tab/browser

The shortest solution for the year 2020 (for those happy people who don't need to support IE)

Tested in Chrome, Firefox, Safari.

function onBeforeUnload(e) {
    if (thereAreUnsavedChanges()) {
        e.preventDefault();
        e.returnValue = '';
        return;
    }

    delete e['returnValue'];
}

window.addEventListener('beforeunload', onBeforeUnload);

Actually no one modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari) displays the "return value" as a question to user. Instead they show their own confirmation text (it depends on browser). But we still need to return some (even empty) string to trigger that confirmation on Chrome.

More explanations see on MDN here and here.

When should I use curly braces for ES6 import?

Summary ES6 modules:

Exports:

You have two types of exports:

  1. Named exports
  2. Default exports, a maximum one per module

Syntax:

// Module A
export const importantData_1 = 1;
export const importantData_2 = 2;
export default function foo () {}

Imports:

The type of export (i.e., named or default exports) affects how to import something:

  1. For a named export we have to use curly braces and the exact name as the declaration (i.e. variable, function, or class) which was exported.
  2. For a default export we can choose the name.

Syntax:

// Module B, imports from module A which is located in the same directory

import { importantData_1 , importantData_2  } from './A';  // For our named imports

// Syntax single named import:
// import { importantData_1 }

// For our default export (foo), the name choice is arbitrary
import ourFunction from './A';

Things of interest:

  1. Use a comma-separated list within curly braces with the matching name of the export for named export.
  2. Use a name of your choosing without curly braces for a default export.

Aliases:

Whenever you want to rename a named import this is possible via aliases. The syntax for this is the following:

import { importantData_1 as myData } from './A';

Now we have imported importantData_1, but the identifier is myData instead of importantData_1.

How to make FileFilter in java?

Here is a little utility class that I created:

import java.io.File;
import java.io.FilenameFilter;
import java.util.HashSet;
import java.util.Iterator;
import java.util.Set;

/**
 * Convenience utility to create a FilenameFilter, based on a list of extensions
 */
public class FileExtensionFilter implements FilenameFilter {
    private Set<String> exts = new HashSet<String>();

    /**
     * @param extensions
     * a list of allowed extensions, without the dot, e.g.
     *            <code>"xml","html","rss"</code>
     */
    public FileExtensionFilter(String... extensions) {
        for (String ext : extensions) {
            exts.add("." + ext.toLowerCase().trim());
        }
    }

    public boolean accept(File dir, String name) {
        final Iterator<String> extList = exts.iterator();
        while (extList.hasNext()) {
            if (name.toLowerCase().endsWith(extList.next())) {
                return true;
            }
        }
        return false;
    }
}

Usage:

       String[] files = new File("myfile").list(new FileExtensionFilter("pdf", "zip"));

How to describe "object" arguments in jsdoc?

I see that there is already an answer about the @return tag, but I want to give more details about it.

First of all, the official JSDoc 3 documentation doesn't give us any examples about the @return for a custom object. Please see https://jsdoc.app/tags-returns.html. Now, let's see what we can do until some standard will appear.

  • Function returns object where keys are dynamically generated. Example: {1: 'Pete', 2: 'Mary', 3: 'John'}. Usually, we iterate over this object with the help of for(var key in obj){...}.

    Possible JSDoc according to https://google.github.io/styleguide/javascriptguide.xml#JsTypes

    /**
     * @return {Object.<number, string>}
     */
    function getTmpObject() {
        var result = {}
        for (var i = 10; i >= 0; i--) {
            result[i * 3] = 'someValue' + i;
        }
        return result
    }

  • Function returns object where keys are known constants. Example: {id: 1, title: 'Hello world', type: 'LEARN', children: {...}}. We can easily access properties of this object: object.id.

    Possible JSDoc according to https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/jsdoc-users/TMvUedK9tC4

    • Fake It.

      /**
       * Generate a point.
       *
       * @returns {Object} point - The point generated by the factory.
       * @returns {number} point.x - The x coordinate.
       * @returns {number} point.y - The y coordinate.
       */
      var pointFactory = function (x, y) {
          return {
              x:x,
              y:y
          }
      }

    • The Full Monty.

      /**
       @class generatedPoint
       @private
       @type {Object}
       @property {number} x The x coordinate.
       @property {number} y The y coordinate.
       */
      function generatedPoint(x, y) {
          return {
              x:x,
              y:y
          };
      }

      /**
       * Generate a point.
       *
       * @returns {generatedPoint} The point generated by the factory.
       */

      var pointFactory = function (x, y) {
          return new generatedPoint(x, y);
      }

    • Define a type.

      /**
       @typedef generatedPoint
       @type {Object}
       @property {number} x The x coordinate.
       @property {number} y The y coordinate.
       */

      /**
       * Generate a point.
       *
       * @returns {generatedPoint} The point generated by the factory.
       */

      var pointFactory = function (x, y) {
          return {
              x:x,
              y:y
          }
      }

    According to https://google.github.io/styleguide/javascriptguide.xml#JsTypes

    • The record type.

      /**
       * @return {{myNum: number, myObject}}
       * An anonymous type with the given type members.
       */
      function getTmpObject() {
          return {
              myNum: 2,
              myObject: 0 || undefined || {}
          }
      }

Indentation shortcuts in Visual Studio

Ctrl-K, Ctrl-D

Will just prettify the entire document. Saves a lot of messing about, compared to delphi.

Make sure to remove all indents by first selecting everything with Ctrl+A then press Shift+Tab repeatedly until everything is aligned to the left. After you do that Ctrl+K, Ctrl+D will work the way you want them to.

You could also do the same but only to a selection of code by highlighting the block of code you want to realign, aligning it to the left side (Shift+Tab) and then after making sure you've selected the code you want to realign press Ctrl+K, Ctrl+F or just right click the highlighted code and select "Format Selection".

I had the problem with a ASP.NET project in VS 2019.

Another symptom was, that some references (System.Web.Http) were marked as faulty in the project references list (Solution Explorer)

My solution:

  1. Delete the faulty references in Project -> References (right click, ...)

How do I change the string representation of a Python class?

This is not as easy as it seems, some core library functions don't work when only str is overwritten (checked with Python 2.7), see this thread for examples How to make a class JSON serializable Also, try this

import json

class A(unicode):
    def __str__(self):
        return 'a'
    def __unicode__(self):
        return u'a'
    def __repr__(self):
        return 'a'

a = A()
json.dumps(a)

produces

'""'

and not

'"a"'

as would be expected.

EDIT: answering mchicago's comment:

unicode does not have any attributes -- it is an immutable string, the value of which is hidden and not available from high-level Python code. The json module uses re for generating the string representation which seems to have access to this internal attribute. Here's a simple example to justify this:

b = A('b') print b

produces

'a'

while

json.dumps({'b': b})

produces

{"b": "b"}

so you see that the internal representation is used by some native libraries, probably for performance reasons.

See also this for more details: http://www.laurentluce.com/posts/python-string-objects-implementation/

How to read a text file?

It depends on what you are trying to do.

file, err := os.Open("file.txt")
fmt.print(file)

The reason it outputs &{0xc082016240}, is because you are printing the pointer value of a file-descriptor (*os.File), not file-content. To obtain file-content, you may READ from a file-descriptor.

To read all file content(in bytes) to memory, ioutil.ReadAll

package main

import (
    "fmt"
    "io/ioutil"
    "os"
    "log"
)

func main() {
    file, err := os.Open("file.txt")
    if err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }
    defer func() {
        if err = f.Close(); err != nil {
            log.Fatal(err)
        }
    }()

  b, err := ioutil.ReadAll(file)
  fmt.Print(b)
}

But sometimes, if the file size is big, it might be more memory-efficient to just read in chunks: buffer-size, hence you could use the implementation of io.Reader.Read from *os.File

func main() {
    file, err := os.Open("file.txt")
    if err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }
    defer func() {
        if err = f.Close(); err != nil {
            log.Fatal(err)
        }
    }()

    buf := make([]byte, 32*1024) // define your buffer size here.

    for {
        n, err := file.Read(buf)

        if n > 0 {
            fmt.Print(buf[:n]) // your read buffer.
        }

        if err == io.EOF {
            break
        }
        if err != nil {
            log.Printf("read %d bytes: %v", n, err)
            break
        }
    }

}

Otherwise, you could also use the standard util package: bufio, try Scanner. A Scanner reads your file in tokens: separator.

By default, scanner advances the token by newline (of course you can customise how scanner should tokenise your file, learn from here the bufio test).

package main

import (
    "fmt"
    "os"
    "log"
    "bufio"
)

func main() {
    file, err := os.Open("file.txt")
    if err != nil {
        log.Fatal(err)
    }
    defer func() {
        if err = f.Close(); err != nil {
            log.Fatal(err)
        }
    }()

    scanner := bufio.NewScanner(file)

    for scanner.Scan() { // internally, it advances token based on sperator
        fmt.Println(scanner.Text())  // token in unicode-char
        fmt.Println(scanner.Bytes()) // token in bytes

    }
}

Lastly, I would also like to reference you to this awesome site: go-lang file cheatsheet. It encompassed pretty much everything related to working with files in go-lang, hope you'll find it useful.

Merge unequal dataframes and replace missing rows with 0

I used the answer given by Chase (answered May 11 '11 at 14:21), but I added a bit of code to apply that solution to my particular problem.

I had a frame of rates (user, download) and a frame of totals (user, download) to be merged by user, and I wanted to include every rate, even if there were no corresponding total. However, there could be no missing totals, in which case the selection of rows for replacement of NA by zero would fail.

The first line of code does the merge. The next two lines change the column names in the merged frame. The if statement replaces NA by zero, but only if there are rows with NA.

# merge rates and totals, replacing absent totals by zero
graphdata <- merge(rates, totals, by=c("user"),all.x=T)
colnames(graphdata)[colnames(graphdata)=="download.x"] = "download.rate"
colnames(graphdata)[colnames(graphdata)=="download.y"] = "download.total"
if(any(is.na(graphdata$download.total))) {
    graphdata[is.na(graphdata$download.total),]$download.total <- 0
}

How to get name of calling function/method in PHP?

My favourite way, in one line!

debug_backtrace()[1]['function'];

You can use it like this:

echo 'The calling function: ' . debug_backtrace()[1]['function'];

Note that this is only compatible with versions of PHP released within the last year. But it's a good idea to keep your PHP up to date anyway for security reasons.

Faster alternative in Oracle to SELECT COUNT(*) FROM sometable

Option 1: Have an index on a non-null column present that can be used for the scan. Or create a function-based index as:

create index idx on t(0);

this can then be scanned to give the count.

Option 2: If you have monitoring turned on then check the monitoring view USER_TAB_MODIFICATIONS and add/subtract the relevant values to the table statistics.

Option 3: For a quick estimate on large tables invoke the SAMPLE clause ... for example ...

SELECT 1000*COUNT(*) FROM sometable SAMPLE(0.1);

Option 4: Use a materialized view to maintain the count(*). Powerful medicine though.

How to move Docker containers between different hosts?

Use this script: https://github.com/ricardobranco777/docker-volumes.sh

This does preserve data in volumes.

Example usage:

# Stop the container
docker stop $CONTAINER

# Create a new image
docker commit $CONTAINER $CONTAINER

# Save image
docker save -o $CONTAINER.tar $CONTAINER

# Save the volumes (use ".tar.gz" if you want compression)
docker-volumes.sh $CONTAINER save $CONTAINER-volumes.tar

# Copy image and volumes to another host
scp $CONTAINER.tar $CONTAINER-volumes.tar $USER@$HOST:

# On the other host:
docker load -i $CONTAINER.tar
docker create --name $CONTAINER [<PREVIOUS CONTAINER OPTIONS>] $CONTAINER

# Load the volumes
docker-volumes.sh $CONTAINER load $CONTAINER-volumes.tar

# Start container
docker start $CONTAINER

submitting a form when a checkbox is checked

I've been messing around with this for about four hours and decided to share this with you.

You can submit a form by clicking a checkbox but the weird thing is that when checking for the submission in php, you would expect the form to be set when you either check or uncheck the checkbox. But this is not true. The form only gets set when you actually check the checkbox, if you uncheck it it won't be set. the word checked at the end of a checkbox input type will cause the checkbox to display checked, so if your field is checked it will have to reflect that like in the example below. When it gets unchecked the php updates the field state which will cause the word checked the disappear.

You HTML should look like this:

<form method='post' action='#'>
<input type='checkbox' name='checkbox' onChange='submit();'
<?php if($page->checkbox_state == 1) { echo 'checked' }; ?>>
</form>

and the php:

if(isset($_POST['checkbox'])) {
   // the checkbox has just been checked
   // save the new state of the checkbox somewhere
   $page->checkbox_state == 1;
} else {
   // the checkbox has just been unchecked
   // if you have another form ont the page which uses than you should
   // make sure that is not the one thats causing the page to handle in input
   // otherwise the submission of the other form will uncheck your checkbox
   // so this this line is optional:
      if(!isset($_POST['submit'])) {
          $page->checkbox_state == 0;
      }
}

How to have a a razor action link open in a new tab?

If your goal is to use the ActionLink helper and open a new tab:

@Html.ActionLink("New tab please", "Home", null , new { target = "_blank" })

@Html.ActionLink("New tab please", "Home", Nothing, New With {Key .target = "_blank"})

SQL: Select columns with NULL values only

SELECT  t.column_name
FROM    user_tab_columns t
WHERE   t.nullable = 'Y' AND t.table_name = 'table name here' AND t.num_distinct = 0;

CSS force new line

Use the display property

a{
    display: block;
}

This will make the link to display in new line

If you want to remove list styling, use

li{

How Best to Compare Two Collections in Java and Act on Them?

I have created an approximation of what I think you are looking for just using the Collections Framework in Java. Frankly, I think it is probably overkill as @Mike Deck points out. For such a small set of items to compare and process I think arrays would be a better choice from a procedural standpoint but here is my pseudo-coded (because I'm lazy) solution. I have an assumption that the Foo class is comparable based on it's unique id and not all of the data in it's contents:

Collection<Foo> oldSet = ...;
Collection<Foo> newSet = ...;

private Collection difference(Collection a, Collection b) {
    Collection result = a.clone();
    result.removeAll(b)
    return result;
}

private Collection intersection(Collection a, Collection b) {
    Collection result = a.clone();
    result.retainAll(b)
    return result;
}

public doWork() {
    // if foo is in(*) oldSet but not newSet, call doRemove(foo)
    Collection removed = difference(oldSet, newSet);
    if (!removed.isEmpty()) {
        loop removed {
            Foo foo = removedIter.next();
            doRemove(foo);
        }
    }
    //else if foo is not in oldSet but in newSet, call doAdd(foo)
    Collection added = difference(newSet, oldSet);
    if (!added.isEmpty()) {
        loop added  {
            Foo foo = addedIter.next();
            doAdd(foo);
        }
    }

    // else if foo is in both collections but modified, call doUpdate(oldFoo, newFoo)
    Collection matched = intersection(oldSet, newSet);
    Comparator comp = new Comparator() {
        int compare(Object o1, Object o2) {
            Foo f1, f2;
            if (o1 instanceof Foo) f1 = (Foo)o1;
            if (o2 instanceof Foo) f2 = (Foo)o2;
            return f1.activated == f2.activated ? f1.startdate.compareTo(f2.startdate) == 0 ? ... : f1.startdate.compareTo(f2.startdate) : f1.activated ? 1 : 0;
        }

        boolean equals(Object o) {
             // equal to this Comparator..not used
        }
    }
    loop matched {
        Foo foo = matchedIter.next();
        Foo oldFoo = oldSet.get(foo);
        Foo newFoo = newSet.get(foo);
        if (comp.compareTo(oldFoo, newFoo ) != 0) {
            doUpdate(oldFoo, newFoo);
        } else {
            //else if !foo.activated && foo.startDate >= now, call doStart(foo)
            if (!foo.activated && foo.startDate >= now) doStart(foo);

            // else if foo.activated && foo.endDate <= now, call doEnd(foo)
            if (foo.activated && foo.endDate <= now) doEnd(foo);
        }
    }
}

As far as your questions: If I convert oldSet and newSet into HashMap (order is not of concern here), with the IDs as keys, would it made the code easier to read and easier to compare? How much of time & memory performance is loss on the conversion? I think that you would probably make the code more readable by using a Map BUT...you would probably use more memory and time during the conversion.

Would iterating the two sets and perform the appropriate operation be more efficient and concise? Yes, this would be the best of both worlds especially if you followed @Mike Sharek 's advice of Rolling your own List with the specialized methods or following something like the Visitor Design pattern to run through your collection and process each item.

Initialize a string in C to empty string

Assigning string literals to char array is allowed only during declaration:

char string[] = "";

This declares string as a char array of size 1 and initializes it with \0.

Try this too:

char str1[] = "";
char str2[5] = "";
printf("%d, %d\n", sizeof(str1), sizeof(str2)); //prints 1, 5

How to check if a file exists in a shell script

If you're using a NFS, "test" is a better solution, because you can add a timeout to it, in case your NFS is down:

time timeout 3 test -f
/nfs/my_nfs_is_currently_down
real 0m3.004s <<== timeout is taken into account
user    0m0.001s
sys     0m0.004s
echo $?
124 <= 124 means the timeout has been reached

A "[ -e my_file ]" construct will freeze until the NFS is functional again:

if [ -e /nfs/my_nfs_is_currently_down ]; then echo "ok" else echo "ko" ; fi

<no answer from the system, my session is "frozen">

How do I vertical center text next to an image in html/css?

Since most of the answers to this question are between 2009 and 2014 (except for a comment in 2018), there should be an update to this.

I found a solution to the wrap-text problem brought up by Spongman on Jun 11 '14 at 23:20. He has an example here: jsfiddle.net/vPpD4

If you add the following in the CSS under the div tag in the jsfiddle.net/vPpD4 example, you get the desired wrap-text effect that I think Spongman was asking about. I don't know how far back this is applicable, but this works in all of the current (as of Dec 2020/Jan 2021) browsers available for Windows computers. Note: I have not tested this on the Apple Safari browser. I have also not tested this on any mobile devices.

    div img {
        float: left;
    }
    .clearfix::after {
        content: "";
        clear: both;
        display: table;
    }

I also added a border around the image, just so that the reader will understand where the edge of the image is and why the text wraps as it does. The resulting example looks is here: http://jsfiddle.net/tqg7hLzk/

SSL certificate rejected trying to access GitHub over HTTPS behind firewall

The problem is that you do not have any of Certification Authority certificates installed on your system. And these certs cannot be installed with cygwin's setup.exe.

Update: Install Net/ca-certificates package in cygwin (thanks dirkjot)

There are two solutions:

  1. Actually install root certificates. Curl guys extracted for you certificates from Mozilla.

    cacert.pem file is what you are looking for. This file contains > 250 CA certs (don't know how to trust this number of ppl). You need to download this file, split it to individual certificates put them to /usr/ssl/certs (your CApath) and index them.

    Here is how to do it. With cygwin setup.exe install curl and openssl packages execute:

    $ cd /usr/ssl/certs
    $ curl http://curl.haxx.se/ca/cacert.pem |
      awk '{print > "cert" (1+n) ".pem"} /-----END CERTIFICATE-----/ {n++}'
    $ c_rehash

    Important: In order to use c_rehash you have to install openssl-perl too.

  2. Ignore SSL certificate verification.

    WARNING: Disabling SSL certificate verification has security implications. Without verification of the authenticity of SSL/HTTPS connections, a malicious attacker can impersonate a trusted endpoint (such as GitHub or some other remote Git host), and you'll be vulnerable to a Man-in-the-Middle Attack. Be sure you fully understand the security issues and your threat model before using this as a solution.

    $ env GIT_SSL_NO_VERIFY=true git clone https://github...

What does an exclamation mark before a cell reference mean?

When entered as the reference of a Named range, it refers to range on the sheet the named range is used on.

For example, create a named range MyName refering to =SUM(!B1:!K1)

Place a formula on Sheet1 =MyName. This will sum Sheet1!B1:K1

Now place the same formula (=MyName) on Sheet2. That formula will sum Sheet2!B1:K1

Note: (as pnuts commented) this and the regular SheetName!B1:K1 format are relative, so reference different cells as the =MyName formula is entered into different cells.

How do you fadeIn and animate at the same time?

Another way to do simultaneous animations if you want to call them separately (eg. from different code) is to use queue. Again, as with Tinister's answer you would have to use animate for this and not fadeIn:

$('.tooltip').css('opacity', 0);
$('.tooltip').show();
...

$('.tooltip').animate({opacity: 1}, {queue: false, duration: 'slow'});
$('.tooltip').animate({ top: "-10px" }, 'slow');

Convert StreamReader to byte[]

Just throw everything you read into a MemoryStream and get the byte array in the end. As noted, you should be reading from the underlying stream to get the raw bytes.

var bytes = default(byte[]);
using (var memstream = new MemoryStream())
{
    var buffer = new byte[512];
    var bytesRead = default(int);
    while ((bytesRead = reader.BaseStream.Read(buffer, 0, buffer.Length)) > 0)
        memstream.Write(buffer, 0, bytesRead);
    bytes = memstream.ToArray();
}

Or if you don't want to manage the buffers:

var bytes = default(byte[]);
using (var memstream = new MemoryStream())
{
    reader.BaseStream.CopyTo(memstream);
    bytes = memstream.ToArray();
}

If Else in LINQ

I assume from db that this is LINQ-to-SQL / Entity Framework / similar (not LINQ-to-Objects);

Generally, you do better with the conditional syntax ( a ? b : c) - however, I don't know if it will work with your different queries like that (after all, how would your write the TSQL?).

For a trivial example of the type of thing you can do:

select new {p.PriceID, Type = p.Price > 0 ? "debit" : "credit" };

You can do much richer things, but I really doubt you can pick the table in the conditional. You're welcome to try, of course...

Accessing Google Spreadsheets with C# using Google Data API

According to the .NET user guide:

Download the .NET client library:

Add these using statements:

using Google.GData.Client;
using Google.GData.Extensions;
using Google.GData.Spreadsheets;

Authenticate:

SpreadsheetsService myService = new SpreadsheetsService("exampleCo-exampleApp-1");
myService.setUserCredentials("[email protected]", "mypassword");

Get a list of spreadsheets:

SpreadsheetQuery query = new SpreadsheetQuery();
SpreadsheetFeed feed = myService.Query(query);

Console.WriteLine("Your spreadsheets: ");
foreach (SpreadsheetEntry entry in feed.Entries)
{
    Console.WriteLine(entry.Title.Text);
}

Given a SpreadsheetEntry you've already retrieved, you can get a list of all worksheets in this spreadsheet as follows:

AtomLink link = entry.Links.FindService(GDataSpreadsheetsNameTable.WorksheetRel, null);

WorksheetQuery query = new WorksheetQuery(link.HRef.ToString());
WorksheetFeed feed = service.Query(query);

foreach (WorksheetEntry worksheet in feed.Entries)
{
    Console.WriteLine(worksheet.Title.Text);
}

And get a cell based feed:

AtomLink cellFeedLink = worksheetentry.Links.FindService(GDataSpreadsheetsNameTable.CellRel, null);

CellQuery query = new CellQuery(cellFeedLink.HRef.ToString());
CellFeed feed = service.Query(query);

Console.WriteLine("Cells in this worksheet:");
foreach (CellEntry curCell in feed.Entries)
{
    Console.WriteLine("Row {0}, column {1}: {2}", curCell.Cell.Row,
        curCell.Cell.Column, curCell.Cell.Value);
}

Using find command in bash script

Welcome to bash. It's an old, dark and mysterious thing, capable of great magic. :-)

The option you're asking about is for the find command though, not for bash. From your command line, you can man find to see the options.

The one you're looking for is -o for "or":

  list="$(find /home/user/Desktop -name '*.bmp' -o -name '*.txt')"

That said ... Don't do this. Storage like this may work for simple filenames, but as soon as you have to deal with special characters, like spaces and newlines, all bets are off. See ParsingLs for details.

$ touch 'one.txt' 'two three.txt' 'foo.bmp'
$ list="$(find . -name \*.txt -o -name \*.bmp -type f)"
$ for file in $list; do if [ ! -f "$file" ]; then echo "MISSING: $file"; fi; done
MISSING: ./two
MISSING: three.txt

Pathname expansion (globbing) provides a much better/safer way to keep track of files. Then you can also use bash arrays:

$ a=( *.txt *.bmp )
$ declare -p a
declare -a a=([0]="one.txt" [1]="two three.txt" [2]="foo.bmp")
$ for file in "${a[@]}"; do ls -l "$file"; done
-rw-r--r--  1 ghoti  staff  0 24 May 16:27 one.txt
-rw-r--r--  1 ghoti  staff  0 24 May 16:27 two three.txt
-rw-r--r--  1 ghoti  staff  0 24 May 16:27 foo.bmp

The Bash FAQ has lots of other excellent tips about programming in bash.

What's the advantage of a Java enum versus a class with public static final fields?

Another important difference is that java compiler treats static final fields of primitive types and String as literals. It means these constants become inline. It's similar to C/C++ #define preprocessor. See this SO question. This is not the case with enums.

change image opacity using javascript

You can use CSS to set the opacity, and than use javascript to apply the styles to a certain element in the DOM.

.opClass {
    opacity:0.4;
    filter:alpha(opacity=40); /* For IE8 and earlier */
}

Than use (for example) jQuery to change the style:

$('#element_id').addClass('opClass');

Or with plain javascript, like this:

document.getElementById("element_id").className = "opClass";

What is the difference between a mutable and immutable string in C#?

String is immutable

i.e. strings cannot be altered. When you alter a string (by adding to it for example), you are actually creating a new string.

But StringBuilder is not immutable (rather, it is mutable)

so if you have to alter a string many times, such as multiple concatenations, then use StringBuilder.

A KeyValuePair in Java

I like to use

Properties

Example:

Properties props = new Properties();

props.setProperty("displayName", "Jim Wilson"); // (key, value)

String name = props.getProperty("displayName"); // => Jim Wilson

String acctNum = props.getProperty("accountNumber"); // => null

String nextPosition = props.getProperty("position", "1"); // => 1

If you are familiar with a hash table you will be pretty familiar with this already

What is event bubbling and capturing?

Description:

quirksmode.org has a nice description of this. In a nutshell (copied from quirksmode):

Event capturing

When you use event capturing

               | |
---------------| |-----------------
| element1     | |                |
|   -----------| |-----------     |
|   |element2  \ /          |     |
|   -------------------------     |
|        Event CAPTURING          |
-----------------------------------

the event handler of element1 fires first, the event handler of element2 fires last.

Event bubbling

When you use event bubbling

               / \
---------------| |-----------------
| element1     | |                |
|   -----------| |-----------     |
|   |element2  | |          |     |
|   -------------------------     |
|        Event BUBBLING           |
-----------------------------------

the event handler of element2 fires first, the event handler of element1 fires last.

What to use?

It depends on what you want to do. There is no better. The difference is the order of the execution of the event handlers. Most of the time it will be fine to fire event handlers in the bubbling phase but it can also be necessary to fire them earlier.

How to save all files from source code of a web site?

Try Winhttrack

...offline browser utility.

It allows you to download a World Wide Web site from the Internet to a local directory, building recursively all directories, getting HTML, images, and other files from the server to your computer. HTTrack arranges the original site's relative link-structure. Simply open a page of the "mirrored" website in your browser, and you can browse the site from link to link, as if you were viewing it online. HTTrack can also update an existing mirrored site, and resume interrupted downloads. HTTrack is fully configurable, and has an integrated help system.

WinHTTrack is the Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Seven release of HTTrack, and WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release...

How to insert newline in string literal?

If I understand the question: Couple "\r\n" to get that new line below in a textbox. My example worked -

   string s1 = comboBox1.Text;     // s1 is the variable assigned to box 1, etc.
   string s2 = comboBox2.Text;

   string both = s1 + "\r\n" + s2;
   textBox1.Text = both;

A typical answer could be s1 s2 in the text box using defined type style.

How to mock location on device?

Use this permission in manifest file

<uses-permission android:name="android.permission.ACCESS_MOCK_LOCATION">

android studio will recommend that "Mock location should only be requested in a test or debug-specific manifest file (typically src/debug/AndroidManifest.xml)" just disable the inspection

Now make sure you have checked the "Allow mock locations" in developer setting of your phone

Use LocationManager

locationManager.addTestProvider(mocLocationProvider, false, false,
                false, false, true, true, true, 0, 5);
locationManager.setTestProviderEnabled(mocLocationProvider, true);

Now set the location wherever you want

Location mockLocation = new Location(mocLocationProvider);
mockLocation.setLatitude(lat);
mockLocation.setLongitude(lng);
mockLocation.setAltitude(alt);
mockLocation.setTime(System.currentTimeMillis());
locationManager.setTestProviderLocation( mocLocationProvider, mockLocation);

Error inflating class fragment

I added an id to my fragment that's it everything works fine. Before this, I changed the manifests file as mentioned above but didn't solve my error. When you see error try to read it fully you'll get to know why there is an error. In my case, in the middle of the error trace, it was shown that the fragment id is missing.

How to change a nullable column to not nullable in a Rails migration?

Per the Strong Migrations gem, using change_column_null in production is a bad idea because it blocks reads and writes while all records are checked.

The recommended way to handle these migrations (Postgres specific) is to separate this process into two migrations.

One to alter the table with the constraint:

class SetSomeColumnNotNull < ActiveRecord::Migration[6.0]
  def change
    safety_assured do
      execute 'ALTER TABLE "users" ADD CONSTRAINT "users_some_column_null" CHECK ("some_column" IS NOT NULL) NOT VALID'
    end
  end
end

And a separate migration to validate it:

class ValidateSomeColumnNotNull < ActiveRecord::Migration[6.0]
  def change
    safety_assured do
      execute 'ALTER TABLE "users" VALIDATE CONSTRAINT "users_some_column_null"'
    end
  end
end

The above examples are pulled (and slightly altered) from the linked documentation. Apparently for Postgres 12+ you can also add NOT NULL to the schema and then drop the constraint after the validation has been run:

class ValidateSomeColumnNotNull < ActiveRecord::Migration[6.0]
  def change
    safety_assured do
      execute 'ALTER TABLE "users" VALIDATE CONSTRAINT "users_some_column_null"'
    end

    # in Postgres 12+, you can then safely set NOT NULL on the column
    change_column_null :users, :some_column, false
    safety_assured do
      execute 'ALTER TABLE "users" DROP CONSTRAINT "users_some_column_null"'
    end
  end
end

Naturally, this means your schema will not show that the column is NOT NULL for earlier versions of Postgres, so I'd also advise setting a model level validation to require the value to be present (though I'd suggest the same even for versions of PG that do allow this step).

Further, before running these migrations you'll want to update all existing records with a value other than null, and make sure any production code that writes to the table is not writing null for the value(s).

Angularjs action on click of button

The calculation occurs immediately since the calculation call is bound in the template, which displays its result when quantity changes.

Instead you could try the following approach. Change your markup to the following:

<div ng-controller="myAppController" style="text-align:center">
  <p style="font-size:28px;">Enter Quantity:
      <input type="text" ng-model="quantity"/>
  </p>
  <button ng-click="calculateQuantity()">Calculate</button>
  <h2>Total Cost: Rs.{{quantityResult}}</h2>
</div>

Next, update your controller:

myAppModule.controller('myAppController', function($scope,calculateService) {
  $scope.quantity=1;
  $scope.quantityResult = 0;

  $scope.calculateQuantity = function() {
    $scope.quantityResult = calculateService.calculate($scope.quantity, 10);
  };
});

Here's a JSBin example that demonstrates the above approach.

The problem with this approach is the calculated result remains visible with the old value till the button is clicked. To address this, you could hide the result whenever the quantity changes.

This would involve updating the template to add an ng-change on the input, and an ng-if on the result:

<input type="text" ng-change="hideQuantityResult()" ng-model="quantity"/>

and

<h2 ng-if="showQuantityResult">Total Cost: Rs.{{quantityResult}}</h2>

In the controller add:

$scope.showQuantityResult = false;

$scope.calculateQuantity = function() {
  $scope.quantityResult = calculateService.calculate($scope.quantity, 10);
  $scope.showQuantityResult = true;
};

$scope.hideQuantityResult = function() {
  $scope.showQuantityResult = false;
};

These updates can be seen in this JSBin demo.

Difference between JSON.stringify and JSON.parse

JSON.parse() takes a JSON string and transforms it into a JavaScript object.

JSON.stringify() takes a JavaScript object and transforms it into a JSON string.

const myObj = {
      name: 'bipon',
      age: 25,
      favoriteFood: 'fish curry'
};

 const myObjStr = JSON.stringify(myObj);

console.log(myObjStr);
// "{"name":"bipon","age":26,"favoriteFood":"fish curry"}"

console.log(JSON.parse(myObjStr));
 // Object {name:"bipon",age:26,favoriteFood:"fish curry"}
And although the methods are usually used on objects, they can also be used on arrays:
const myArr = ['simon', 'gomez', 'john'];

const myArrStr = JSON.stringify(myArr);

console.log(myArrStr);
// "["simon","gomez","john"]"

console.log(JSON.parse(myArrStr));
// ["simon","gomez","john"]

starting file download with JavaScript

In relation to the top answer I have a possible solution to the security risk.

<?php
     if(isset($_GET['path'])){
         if(in_array($_GET['path'], glob("*/*.*"))){
             header("Content-Type: application/octet-stream");
             header("Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=".$_GET['path']);
             readfile($_GET['path']);
         }
     }
?>

Using the glob() function (I tested the download file in a path one folder up from the file to be downloaded) I was able to make a quick array of files that are "allowed" to be downloaded and checked the passed path against it. Not only does this insure that the file being grabbed isn't something sensitive but also checks on the files existence at the same time.

~Note: Javascript / HTML~

HTML:

<iframe id="download" style="display:none"></iframe>

and

<input type="submit" value="Download" onclick="ChangeSource('document_path');return false;">

JavaScript:

<script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
        function ChangeSource(path){
            document.getElementByID('download').src = 'path_to_php?path=' + document_path;
        }
    -->
</script>

Populating spinner directly in the layout xml

Define this in your String.xml file and name the array what you want, such as "Weight"

<string-array name="Weight">
<item>Kg</item>
<item>Gram</item>
<item>Tons</item>
</string-array>

and this code in your layout.xml

<Spinner
        android:id="@+id/fromspin"
        android:layout_width="fill_parent"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:entries="@array/Weight"
 />

In your java file, getActivity is used in fragment; if you write that code in activity, then remove getActivity.

a = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.fromspin);

 ArrayAdapter<CharSequence> adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource(this.getActivity(),
                R.array.weight, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item);
        adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item);

        a.setAdapter(adapter);
        a.setOnItemSelectedListener(new AdapterView.OnItemSelectedListener() {
            public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int pos, long id) {
                if (a.getSelectedItem().toString().trim().equals("Kilogram")) {
                    if (!b.getText().toString().isEmpty()) {
                        float value1 = Float.parseFloat(b.getText().toString());
                        float kg = value1;
                        c.setText(Float.toString(kg));
                        float gram = value1 * 1000;
                        d.setText(Float.toString(gram));
                        float carat = value1 * 5000;
                        e.setText(Float.toString(carat));
                        float ton = value1 / 908;
                        f.setText(Float.toString(ton));
                    }

                }

            public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView<?> parent) {
                // Another interface callback
            }
        });
        // Inflate the layout for this fragment
        return v;
    }

non static method cannot be referenced from a static context

You are calling nextInt statically by using Random.nextInt.

Instead, create a variable, Random r = new Random(); and then call r.nextInt(10).

It would be definitely worth while to check out:

Update:

You really should replace this line,

Random Random = new Random();

with something like this,

Random r = new Random();

If you use variable names as class names you'll run into a boat load of problems. Also as a Java convention, use lowercase names for variables. That might help avoid some confusion.

Testing if a list of integer is odd or even

Just use the modulus

loop through the list and run the following on each item

if(num % 2 == 0)
{
  //is even
}
else
{
  //is odd
}

Alternatively if you want to know if all are even you can do something like this:

bool allAreEven = lst.All(x => x % 2 == 0);

WPF Application that only has a tray icon

You have to use the NotifyIcon control from System.Windows.Forms, or alternatively you can use the Notify Icon API provided by Windows API. WPF Provides no such equivalent, and it has been requested on Microsoft Connect several times.

I have code on GitHub which uses System.Windows.Forms NotifyIcon Component from within a WPF application, the code can be viewed at https://github.com/wilson0x4d/Mubox/blob/master/Mubox.QuickLaunch/AppWindow.xaml.cs

Here are the summary bits:

Create a WPF Window with ShowInTaskbar=False, and which is loaded in a non-Visible State.

At class-level:

private System.Windows.Forms.NotifyIcon notifyIcon = null;

During OnInitialize():

notifyIcon = new System.Windows.Forms.NotifyIcon();
notifyIcon.Click += new EventHandler(notifyIcon_Click);
notifyIcon.DoubleClick += new EventHandler(notifyIcon_DoubleClick);
notifyIcon.Icon = IconHandles["QuickLaunch"];

During OnLoaded():

notifyIcon.Visible = true;

And for interaction (shown as notifyIcon.Click and DoubleClick above):

void notifyIcon_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    ShowQuickLaunchMenu();
}

From here you can resume the use of WPF Controls and APIs such as context menus, pop-up windows, etc.

It's that simple. You don't exactly need a WPF Window to host to the component, it's just the most convenient way to introduce one into a WPF App (as a Window is generally the default entry point defined via App.xaml), likewise, you don't need a WPF Wrapper or 3rd party control, as the SWF component is guaranteed present in any .NET Framework installation which also has WPF support since it's part of the .NET Framework (which all current and future .NET Framework versions build upon.) To date, there is no indication from Microsoft that SWF support will be dropped from the .NET Framework anytime soon.

Hope that helps.

It's a little cheese that you have to use a pre-3.0 Framework Component to get a tray-icon, but understandably as Microsoft has explained it, there is no concept of a System Tray within the scope of WPF. WPF is a presentation technology, and Notification Icons are an Operating System (not a "Presentation") concept.

Paste in insert mode?

If you don't want Vim to mangle formatting in incoming pasted text, you might also want to consider using: :set paste. This will prevent Vim from re-tabbing your code. When done pasting, :set nopaste will return to the normal behavior.

It's also possible to toggle the mode with a single key, by adding something like set pastetoggle=<F2> to your .vimrc. More details on toggling auto-indent are here.

What techniques can be used to define a class in JavaScript, and what are their trade-offs?

The simple way is:

function Foo(a) {
  var that=this;

  function privateMethod() { .. }

  // public methods
  that.add = function(b) {
    return a + b;
  };
  that.avg = function(b) {
    return that.add(b) / 2; // calling another public method
  };
}

var x = new Foo(10);
alert(x.add(2)); // 12
alert(x.avg(20)); // 15

The reason for that is that this can be bound to something else if you give a method as an event handler, so you save the value during instantiation and use it later.

Edit: it's definitely not the best way, just a simple way. I'm waiting for good answers too!

Using Ajax.BeginForm with ASP.NET MVC 3 Razor

Prior to adding the Ajax.BeginForm. Add below scripts to your project in the order mentioned,

  1. jquery-1.7.1.min.js
  2. jquery.unobtrusive-ajax.min.js

Only these two are enough for performing Ajax operation.

How do I trim whitespace from a string?

Well seeing this thread as a beginner got my head spinning. Hence came up with a simple shortcut.

Though str.strip() works to remove leading & trailing spaces it does nothing for spaces between characters.

words=input("Enter the word to test")
# If I have a user enter discontinous threads it becomes a problem
# input = "   he llo, ho w are y ou  "
n=words.strip()
print(n)
# output "he llo, ho w are y ou" - only leading & trailing spaces are removed

Instead use str.replace() to make more sense plus less error & more to the point. The following code can generalize the use of str.replace()

def whitespace(words):
    r=words.replace(' ','') # removes all whitespace
    n=r.replace(',','|') # other uses of replace
    return n
def run():
    words=input("Enter the word to test") # take user input
    m=whitespace(words) #encase the def in run() to imporve usability on various functions
    o=m.count('f') # for testing
    return m,o
print(run())
output- ('hello|howareyou', 0)

Can be helpful while inheriting the same in diff. functions.

How can I add (simple) tracing in C#?

I followed around five different answers as well as all the blog posts in the previous answers and still had problems. I was trying to add a listener to some existing code that was tracing using the TraceSource.TraceEvent(TraceEventType, Int32, String) method where the TraceSource object was initialised with a string making it a 'named source'.

For me the issue was not creating a valid combination of source and switch elements to target this source. Here is an example that will log to a file called tracelog.txt. For the following code:

TraceSource source = new TraceSource("sourceName");
source.TraceEvent(TraceEventType.Verbose, 1, "Trace message");

I successfully managed to log with the following diagnostics configuration:

<system.diagnostics>
    <sources>
        <source name="sourceName" switchName="switchName">
            <listeners>
                <add
                    name="textWriterTraceListener"
                    type="System.Diagnostics.TextWriterTraceListener"
                    initializeData="tracelog.txt" />
            </listeners>
        </source>
    </sources>

    <switches>
        <add name="switchName" value="Verbose" />
    </switches>
</system.diagnostics>

How do I capture SIGINT in Python?

If you want to ensure that your cleanup process finishes I would add on to Matt J's answer by using a SIG_IGN so that further SIGINT are ignored which will prevent your cleanup from being interrupted.

import signal
import sys

def signal_handler(signum, frame):
    signal.signal(signum, signal.SIG_IGN) # ignore additional signals
    cleanup() # give your process a chance to clean up
    sys.exit(0)

signal.signal(signal.SIGINT, signal_handler) # register the signal with the signal handler first

How to make JavaScript execute after page load?

$(window).on("load", function(){ ... });

.ready() works best for me.

$(document).ready(function(){ ... });

.load() will work, but it won't wait till the page is loaded.

jQuery(window).load(function () { ... });

Doesn't work for me, breaks the next-to inline script. I am also using jQuery 3.2.1 along with some other jQuery forks.

To hide my websites loading overlay, I use the following:

<script>
$(window).on("load", function(){
$('.loading-page').delay(3000).fadeOut(250);
});
</script>
