Is it possible for UIStackView to scroll?

I was looking to do the same thing and stumbled upon this excellent post. If you want to do this programmatically using the anchor API, this is the way to go.

To summarize, embed your UIStackView in your UIScrollView, and set the anchor constraints of the UIStackView to match those of the UIScrollView:

stackView.leadingAnchor.constraintEqualToAnchor(scrollView.leadingAnchor).active = true
stackView.trailingAnchor.constraintEqualToAnchor(scrollView.trailingAnchor).active = true
stackView.bottomAnchor.constraintEqualToAnchor(scrollView.bottomAnchor).active = true
stackView.topAnchor.constraintEqualToAnchor(scrollView.topAnchor).active = true
stackView.widthAnchor.constraintEqualToAnchor(scrollView.widthAnchor).active = true

Is it possible to use global variables in Rust?

It's possible but no heap allocation allowed directly. Heap allocation is performed at runtime. Here are a few examples:

static SOME_INT: i32 = 5;
static SOME_STR: &'static str = "A static string";
static SOME_STRUCT: MyStruct = MyStruct {
    number: 10,
    string: "Some string",
};
static mut db: Option<sqlite::Connection> = None;

fn main() {
    println!("{}", SOME_INT);
    println!("{}", SOME_STR);
    println!("{}", SOME_STRUCT.number);
    println!("{}", SOME_STRUCT.string);

    unsafe {
        db = Some(open_database());
    }
}

struct MyStruct {
    number: i32,
    string: &'static str,
}

Check if xdebug is working

you can run this small php code

<?php
phpinfo();
?>

Copy the whole output page, paste it in this link. Then analyze. It will show if Xdebug is installed or not. And it will give instructions to complete the installation.

SQL (MySQL) vs NoSQL (CouchDB)

One of the best options is to go for MongoDB(NOSql dB) that supports scalability.Stores large amounts of data nothing but bigdata in the form of documents unlike rows and tables in sql.This is fasters that follows sharding of the data.Uses replicasets to ensure data guarantee that maintains multiple servers having primary db server as the base. Language independent. Flexible to use

Delete last char of string

Additional to sll's solution: It's better to trim the string in case there are some blank(s) at the end.

strgroupids = strgroupids.Remove(strgroupids.Trim().Length - 1);

Splitting dataframe into multiple dataframes

I had similar problem. I had a time series of daily sales for 10 different stores and 50 different items. I needed to split the original dataframe in 500 dataframes (10stores*50stores) to apply Machine Learning models to each of them and I couldn't do it manually.

This is the head of the dataframe:

head of the dataframe: df

I have created two lists; one for the names of dataframes and one for the couple of array [item_number, store_number].

    list=[]
    for i in range(1,len(items)*len(stores)+1):
    global list
    list.append('df'+str(i))

    list_couple_s_i =[]
    for item in items:
          for store in stores:
                  global list_couple_s_i
                  list_couple_s_i.append([item,store])

And once the two lists are ready you can loop on them to create the dataframes you want:

         for name, it_st in zip(list,list_couple_s_i):
                   globals()[name] = df.where((df['item']==it_st[0]) &
                                                (df['store']==(it_st[1])))
                   globals()[name].dropna(inplace=True)

In this way I have created 500 dataframes.

Hope this will be helpful!

Java ArrayList of Doubles

Try this:

List<Double> list = Arrays.asList(1.38, 2.56, 4.3);

which returns a fixed size list.

If you need an expandable list, pass this result to the ArrayList constructor:

List<Double> list = new ArrayList<>(Arrays.asList(1.38, 2.56, 4.3));

Add IIS 7 AppPool Identities as SQL Server Logons

The "IIS APPPOOL\AppPoolName" will work, but as mentioned previously, it does not appear to be a valid AD name so when you search for it in the "Select User or Group" dialog box, it won't show up (actually, it will find it, but it will think its an actual system account, and it will try to treat it as such...which won't work, and will give you the error message about it not being found).

How I've gotten it to work is:

  1. In SQL Server Management Studio, look for the Security folder (the security folder at the same level as the Databases, Server Objects, etc. folders...not the security folder within each individual database)
  2. Right click logins and select "New Login"
  3. In the Login name field, type IIS APPPOOL\YourAppPoolName - do not click search
  4. Fill whatever other values you like (i.e., authentication type, default database, etc.)
  5. Click OK

As long as the AppPool name actually exists, the login should now be created.

Is it safe to use Project Lombok?

Wanted to use lombok's @ToString but soon faced random compile errors on project rebuild in Intellij IDEA. Had to hit compile several times before incremental compilation could complete with success.

Tried both lombok 1.12.2 and 0.9.3 with Intellij IDEA 12.1.6 and 13.0 without any lombok plugin under jdk 1.6.0_39 and 1.6.0_45.

Had to manually copy generated methods from delomboked source and put lombok on hold until better times.

Update

The problem happens only with parallel compile enabled.

Filed an issue: https://github.com/rzwitserloot/lombok/issues/648

Update

mplushnikov commented on 30 Jan 2016:

Newer version of Intellij doesn't have such issues anymore. I think it can be closed here.

Update

I would highly recommend to switch from Java+Lombok to Kotlin if possible. As it has resolved from the ground up all Java issues that Lombok tries to work around.

How to iterate through property names of Javascript object?

In JavaScript 1.8.5, Object.getOwnPropertyNames returns an array of all properties found directly upon a given object.

Object.getOwnPropertyNames ( obj )

and another method Object.keys, which returns an array containing the names of all of the given object's own enumerable properties.

Object.keys( obj )

I used forEach to list values and keys in obj, same as for (var key in obj) ..

Object.keys(obj).forEach(function (key) {
      console.log( key , obj[key] );
});

This all are new features in ECMAScript , the mothods getOwnPropertyNames, keys won't supports old browser's.

How to take column-slices of dataframe in pandas

Another way to get a subset of columns from your DataFrame, assuming you want all the rows, would be to do:
data[['a','b']] and data[['c','d','e']]
If you want to use numerical column indexes you can do:
data[data.columns[:2]] and data[data.columns[2:]]

Why won't my PHP app send a 404 error?

That is correct behaviour, it's up to you to create the contents for the 404 page.
The 404 header is used by spiders and download-managers to determine if the file exists.
(A page with a 404 header won't be indexed by google or other search-engines)

Normal users however don't look at http-headers and use the page as a normal page.

How to clear Route Caching on server: Laravel 5.2.37

When do we need curly braces around shell variables?

You are also able to do some text manipulation inside the braces:

STRING="./folder/subfolder/file.txt"
echo ${STRING} ${STRING%/*/*}

Result:

./folder/subfolder/file.txt ./folder

or

STRING="This is a string"
echo ${STRING// /_}

Result:

This_is_a_string

You are right in "regular variables" are not needed... But it is more helpful for the debugging and to read a script.

When to use @QueryParam vs @PathParam

I am giving one exapmle to undersand when do we use @Queryparam and @pathparam

For example I am taking one resouce is carResource class

If you want to make the inputs of your resouce method manadatory then use the param type as @pathaparam, if the inputs of your resource method should be optional then keep that param type as @QueryParam param

@Path("/car")
class CarResource
{
    @Get
    @produces("text/plain")
    @Path("/search/{carmodel}")
    public String getCarSearch(@PathParam("carmodel")String model,@QueryParam("carcolor")String color) {
        //logic for getting cars based on carmodel and color
            -----
        return cars
    }
}

For this resouce pass the request

req uri ://address:2020/carWeb/car/search/swift?carcolor=red

If you give req like this the resouce will gives the based car model and color

 req uri://address:2020/carWeb/car/search/swift

If you give req like this the resoce method will display only swift model based car

req://address:2020/carWeb/car/search?carcolor=red

If you give like this we will get ResourceNotFound exception because in the car resouce class I declared carmodel as @pathPram that is you must and should give the carmodel as reQ uri otherwise it will not pass the req to resouce but if you don't pass the color also it will pass the req to resource why because the color is @quetyParam it is optional in req.

How do I upgrade PHP in Mac OS X?

Upgrading to Snow Leopard won't solve the your primary problem of keeping PHP up to date. Apple doesn't always keep the third party software that it bundles up to date with OS updates. And relying on Apple to get you the bug fix / security update you need is asking for trouble.

Additionally, I would recommend installing through MacPorts (and doing the config necessary to use it instead of Apple's PHP) rather than try to upgrade the Apple supplied PHP in place. Anything you do to /usr/bin risks being overwritten by some future Apple update.

How do I set <table> border width with CSS?

The default border-style is none, so you must specify that as well as the width and the colour.

You can use the border shorthand property to set all three values in one go.

Also, the border attribute describes the border for the table and the cells. CSS is much more flexible so it only describes the border of the elements you are selecting. You need to select the cells too in order to get the same effect.

table, th, td {
    border: solid black 1px;
}

SQL server stored procedure return a table

Though this question is very old but as a new in Software Development I can't stop my self to share what I have learnt :D

Creation of Stored Procedure:

CREAET PROC usp_ValidateUSer
(
    @UserName nVARCHAR(50),
    @Password nVARCHAR(50)
)
AS

BEGIN
    IF EXISTS(SELECT '#' FROM Users WHERE Username=@UserName AND Password=@Password)
    BEGIN
        SELECT u.UserId, u.Username, r.UserRole
        FROM Users u
        INNER JOIN UserRoles r
        ON u.UserRoleId=r.UserRoleId
    END
END

Execution of Stored Procedure:

(If you want to test the execution of Stored Procedure in SQL)

EXEC usp_ValidateUSer @UserName='admin', @Password='admin'

Th Output:

enter image description here

ASP.NET Background image

body {
    background-image: url('../images/background.jpg');
    background-repeat: no-repeat;
    background-size: cover; /* will auto resize to fill the screen */
}

MySQL: Check if the user exists and drop it

Update: As of MySQL 5.7 you can use DROP USER IF EXISTS statement. Ref: https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/drop-user.html

Syntax: DROP USER [IF EXISTS] user [, user] ...

Example: DROP USER IF EXISTS 'jeffrey'@'localhost';

FYI (and for older version of MySQL), this is a better solution...!!!

The following SP will help you to remove user 'tempuser'@'%' by executing CALL DropUserIfExistsAdvanced('tempuser', '%');

If you want to remove all users named 'tempuser' (say 'tempuser'@'%', 'tempuser'@'localhost' and 'tempuser'@'192.168.1.101') execute SP like CALL DropUserIfExistsAdvanced('tempuser', NULL); This will delete all users named tempuser!!! seriously...

Now please have a look on mentioned SP DropUserIfExistsAdvanced:

DELIMITER $$

DROP PROCEDURE IF EXISTS `DropUserIfExistsAdvanced`$$

CREATE DEFINER=`root`@`localhost` PROCEDURE `DropUserIfExistsAdvanced`(
    MyUserName VARCHAR(100)
    , MyHostName VARCHAR(100)
)
BEGIN
DECLARE pDone INT DEFAULT 0;
DECLARE mUser VARCHAR(100);
DECLARE mHost VARCHAR(100);
DECLARE recUserCursor CURSOR FOR
    SELECT `User`, `Host` FROM `mysql`.`user` WHERE `User` = MyUserName;
DECLARE CONTINUE HANDLER FOR NOT FOUND SET pDone = 1;

IF (MyHostName IS NOT NULL) THEN
    -- 'username'@'hostname' exists
    IF (EXISTS(SELECT NULL FROM `mysql`.`user` WHERE `User` = MyUserName AND `Host` = MyHostName)) THEN
        SET @SQL = (SELECT mResult FROM (SELECT GROUP_CONCAT("DROP USER ", "'", MyUserName, "'@'", MyHostName, "'") AS mResult) AS Q LIMIT 1);
        PREPARE STMT FROM @SQL;
        EXECUTE STMT;
        DEALLOCATE PREPARE STMT;
    END IF;
ELSE
    -- check whether MyUserName exists (MyUserName@'%' , MyUserName@'localhost' etc)
    OPEN recUserCursor;
    REPEAT
        FETCH recUserCursor INTO mUser, mHost;
        IF NOT pDone THEN
            SET @SQL = (SELECT mResult FROM (SELECT GROUP_CONCAT("DROP USER ", "'", mUser, "'@'", mHost, "'") AS mResult) AS Q LIMIT 1);
            PREPARE STMT FROM @SQL;
            EXECUTE STMT;
            DEALLOCATE PREPARE STMT;
        END IF;
    UNTIL pDone END REPEAT;
END IF;
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
END$$

DELIMITER ;

Usage:

CALL DropUserIfExistsAdvanced('tempuser', '%'); to remove user 'tempuser'@'%'

CALL DropUserIfExistsAdvanced('tempuser', '192.168.1.101'); to remove user 'tempuser'@'192.168.1.101'

CALL DropUserIfExistsAdvanced('tempuser', NULL); to remove all users named 'tempuser' (eg., say 'tempuser'@'%', 'tempuser'@'localhost' and 'tempuser'@'192.168.1.101')

Port 443 in use by "Unable to open process" with PID 4

Probably some process is using that port, i would guess you have another webserver running with ssl/tls already. You must trac down what process is using the port and shut it down. The fact that it does not help to restart your computer makes me think that you may find what you are looking for in msconfig. Try to have a look there, open prompt and write msconfig

post 443 is normaly used by secure http, => https

I have never used windows server but there could be some built in webserver that autostarts, have you ever installed another webserver?

Try use the command Netstat -a -n -o to see what process that is blocking. you can the process pid from the output.

The Routing and RAS - service is your problem i guess look at this post

it does this, thats why its blocking:

SSTP tunneling protocol Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (SSTP) is a new form of virtual private networking (VPN) tunnel with features that allow traffic to pass through firewalls that block PPTP and L2TP/IPsec traffic. SSTP provides a mechanism to encapsulate PPP traffic over the SSL channel of the HTTPS protocol. The use of PPP allows support for strong authentication methods, such as EAP-TLS. The use of HTTPS means traffic will flow through TCP port 443, a port commonly used for Web access. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) provides transport-level security with enhanced key negotiation, encryption, and integrity checking.

How to ignore HTML element from tabindex?

Just add the attribute disabled to the element (or use jQuery to do it for you). Disabled prevents the input from being focused or selected at all.

how to check if a form is valid programmatically using jQuery Validation Plugin

2015 answer: we have this out of the box on modern browsers, just use the HTML5 CheckValidity API from jQuery. I've also made a jquery-html5-validity module to do this:

npm install jquery-html5-validity

Then:

var $ = require('jquery')
require("jquery-html5-validity")($);

then you can run:

$('.some-class').isValid()

How to decode encrypted wordpress admin password?

You can't easily decrypt the password from the hash string that you see. You should rather replace the hash string with a new one from a password that you do know.

There's a good howto here:

https://jakebillo.com/wordpress-phpass-generator-resetting-or-creating-a-new-admin-user/

Basically:

  1. generate a new hash from a known password using e.g. http://scriptserver.mainframe8.com/wordpress_password_hasher.php, as described in the above link, or any other product that uses the phpass library,
  2. use your DB interface (e.g. phpMyAdmin) to update the user_pass field with the new hash string.

If you have more users in this WordPress installation, you can also copy the hash string from one user whose password you know, to the other user (admin).

Get column index from column name in python pandas

For returning multiple column indices, I recommend using the pandas.Index method get_indexer, if you have unique labels:

df = pd.DataFrame({"pear": [1, 2, 3], "apple": [2, 3, 4], "orange": [3, 4, 5]})
df.columns.get_indexer(['pear', 'apple'])
# Out: array([0, 1], dtype=int64)

If you have non-unique labels in the index (columns only support unique labels) get_indexer_for. It takes the same args as get_indeder:

df = pd.DataFrame(
    {"pear": [1, 2, 3], "apple": [2, 3, 4], "orange": [3, 4, 5]},
    index=[0, 1, 1])
df.index.get_indexer_for([0, 1])
# Out: array([0, 1, 2], dtype=int64)

Both methods also support non-exact indexing with, f.i. for float values taking the nearest value with a tolerance. If two indices have the same distance to the specified label or are duplicates, the index with the larger index value is selected:

df = pd.DataFrame(
    {"pear": [1, 2, 3], "apple": [2, 3, 4], "orange": [3, 4, 5]},
    index=[0, .9, 1.1])
df.index.get_indexer([0, 1])
# array([ 0, -1], dtype=int64)

How to create a hash or dictionary object in JavaScript

Don't use an array if you want named keys, use a plain object.

var a = {};
a["key1"] = "value1";
a["key2"] = "value2";

Then:

if ("key1" in a) {
   // something
} else {
   // something else
}

Read and write a text file in typescript

First you will need to install node definitions for Typescript. You can find the definitions file here:

https://github.com/DefinitelyTyped/DefinitelyTyped/blob/master/node/node.d.ts

Once you've got file, just add the reference to your .ts file like this:

/// <reference path="path/to/node.d.ts" />

Then you can code your typescript class that read/writes, using the Node File System module. Your typescript class myClass.ts can look like this:

/// <reference path="path/to/node.d.ts" />

class MyClass {

    // Here we import the File System module of node
    private fs = require('fs');

    constructor() { }

    createFile() {

        this.fs.writeFile('file.txt', 'I am cool!',  function(err) {
            if (err) {
                return console.error(err);
            }
            console.log("File created!");
        });
    }

    showFile() {

        this.fs.readFile('file.txt', function (err, data) {
            if (err) {
                return console.error(err);
            }
            console.log("Asynchronous read: " + data.toString());
        });
    }
}

// Usage
// var obj = new MyClass();
// obj.createFile();
// obj.showFile();

Once you transpile your .ts file to a javascript (check out here if you don't know how to do it), you can run your javascript file with node and let the magic work:

> node myClass.js

How do I delete files programmatically on Android?

Try this one. It is working for me.

handler.postDelayed(new Runnable() {
    @Override
    public void run() {
        // Set up the projection (we only need the ID)
        String[] projection = { MediaStore.Images.Media._ID };

        // Match on the file path
        String selection = MediaStore.Images.Media.DATA + " = ?";
        String[] selectionArgs = new String[] { imageFile.getAbsolutePath() };

        // Query for the ID of the media matching the file path
        Uri queryUri = MediaStore.Images.Media.EXTERNAL_CONTENT_URI;
        ContentResolver contentResolver = getActivity().getContentResolver();
        Cursor c = contentResolver.query(queryUri, projection, selection, selectionArgs, null);

        if (c != null) {
            if (c.moveToFirst()) {
                // We found the ID. Deleting the item via the content provider will also remove the file
                long id = c.getLong(c.getColumnIndexOrThrow(MediaStore.Images.Media._ID));
                Uri deleteUri = ContentUris.withAppendedId(queryUri, id);
                contentResolver.delete(deleteUri, null, null);
            } else {
                // File not found in media store DB
            }
            c.close();
        }
    }
}, 5000);

How can one print a size_t variable portably using the printf family?

Use the z modifier:

size_t x = ...;
ssize_t y = ...;
printf("%zu\n", x);  // prints as unsigned decimal
printf("%zx\n", x);  // prints as hex
printf("%zd\n", y);  // prints as signed decimal

Python Requests - No connection adapters

You need to include the protocol scheme:

'http://192.168.1.61:8080/api/call'

Without the http:// part, requests has no idea how to connect to the remote server.

Note that the protocol scheme must be all lowercase; if your URL starts with HTTP:// for example, it won’t find the http:// connection adapter either.

Change the image source on rollover using jQuery

  var newSrc = $(this).attr("src").replace("image.gif", "imageover.gif");
  $(this).attr("src", newSrc);

$('img').mouseout(function(){
  var newSrc = $(this).attr("src").replace("imageover.gif", "image.gif");
  $(this).attr("src", newSrc);

How to configure port for a Spring Boot application

Just set the environment variable SERVER_PORT.
(The examples works on Linux)

  • Start via java -jar:
    SERVER_PORT=9093 java -jar target/eric-sc-dummy.jar

  • Start via maven spring-boot plugin:
    SERVER_PORT=9093 mvn spring-boot:run

Tips:

  • If you add other sub commands before the java -jar or mvn command, then you need to add export to set env in a separate command, and split them via ;, to make sure it's available to sub process.
    e.g:
    export SERVER_PORT=9093; export MAVEN_OPTS="-Xmx256m -Xms64m"; mvn spring-boot:run

How can I set my Cygwin PATH to find javac?

Java binaries may be under "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)": those white spaces will likely affect the behaviour.

In order to set up env variables correctly, I suggest gathering some info before starting:

  • Open DOS shell (type cmd into 'RUN' box) go to C:\
  • type "dir /x" and take note of DOS names (with ~) for "Program Files *" folders

Cygwin configuration:

go under C:\cygwin\home\, then open .bash_profile and add the following two lines (conveniently customized in order to match you actual JDK path)

export JAVA_HOME="/cygdrive/c/PROGRA~1/Java/jdk1.8.0_65"
export PATH="$JAVA_HOME/bin:$PATH"

Now from Cygwin launch

javac -version

to check if the configuration is successful.

"The file "MyApp.app" couldn't be opened because you don't have permission to view it" when running app in Xcode 6 Beta 4

Well in my case, I just rename the Bundle Name and Executable file values in info.plist same as project name. It worked for me.

Most efficient way to remove special characters from string

I wonder if a Regex-based replacement (possibly compiled) is faster. Would have to test that Someone has found this to be ~5 times slower.

Other than that, you should initialize the StringBuilder with an expected length, so that the intermediate string doesn't have to be copied around while it grows.

A good number is the length of the original string, or something slightly lower (depending on the nature of the functions inputs).

Finally, you can use a lookup table (in the range 0..127) to find out whether a character is to be accepted.

Cannot resolve symbol HttpGet,HttpClient,HttpResponce in Android Studio

Accessing dict keys like an attribute?

As noted by Doug there's a Bunch package which you can use to achieve the obj.key functionality. Actually there's a newer version called

NeoBunch

It has though a great feature converting your dict to a NeoBunch object through its neobunchify function. I use Mako templates a lot and passing data as NeoBunch objects makes them far more readable, so if you happen to end up using a normal dict in your Python program but want the dot notation in a Mako template you can use it that way:

from mako.template import Template
from neobunch import neobunchify

mako_template = Template(filename='mako.tmpl', strict_undefined=True)
data = {'tmpl_data': [{'key1': 'value1', 'key2': 'value2'}]}
with open('out.txt', 'w') as out_file:
    out_file.write(mako_template.render(**neobunchify(data)))

And the Mako template could look like:

% for d in tmpl_data:
Column1     Column2
${d.key1}   ${d.key2}
% endfor

How to clear a chart from a canvas so that hover events cannot be triggered?

This worked very well for me

    var ctx = $("#mycanvas");
     var LineGraph = new Chart(ctx, {
        type: 'line',
        data: chartdata});
        LineGraph.destroy();

Use .destroy this to destroy any chart instances that are created. This will clean up any references stored to the chart object within Chart.js, along with any associated event listeners attached by Chart.js. This must be called before the canvas is reused for a new chart.

How to use img src in vue.js?

Try this:

<img v-bind:src="'/media/avatars/' + joke.avatar" />

Don't forget single quote around your path string. also in your data check you have correctly defined image variable.

How to use a client certificate to authenticate and authorize in a Web API

I came upon a similar issue recently and following Fabian's advice actually led me to the solution. Turns out with client certs you have to ensure two things:

  1. The private key is actually being exported as part of the cert.

  2. The application pool identity running the app has access to said private key.

In our case I had to:

  1. Import the pfx file into the local server store while checking the export checkbox to ensure the private key was sent out.
  2. Using MMC console, grant the service account used access to the private key for the cert.

The trusted root issue explained in other answers is a valid one, it was just not the issue in our case.

Purpose of __repr__ method?

__repr__ should return a printable representation of the object, most likely one of the ways possible to create this object. See official documentation here. __repr__ is more for developers while __str__ is for end users.

A simple example:

>>> class Point:
...   def __init__(self, x, y):
...     self.x, self.y = x, y
...   def __repr__(self):
...     return 'Point(x=%s, y=%s)' % (self.x, self.y)
>>> p = Point(1, 2)
>>> p
Point(x=1, y=2)

Simple C example of doing an HTTP POST and consuming the response

A message has a header part and a message body separated by a blank line. The blank line is ALWAYS needed even if there is no message body. The header starts with a command and has additional lines of key value pairs separated by a colon and a space. If there is a message body, it can be anything you want it to be.

Lines in the header and the blank line at the end of the header must end with a carraige return and linefeed pair (see HTTP header line break style) so that's why those lines have \r\n at the end.

A URL has the form of http://host:port/path?query_string

There are two main ways of submitting a request to a website:

  • GET: The query string is optional but, if specified, must be reasonably short. Because of this the header could just be the GET command and nothing else. A sample message could be:

    GET /path?query_string HTTP/1.0\r\n
    \r\n

  • POST: What would normally be in the query string is in the body of the message instead. Because of this the header needs to include the Content-Type: and Content-Length: attributes as well as the POST command. A sample message could be:

    POST /path HTTP/1.0\r\n
    Content-Type: text/plain\r\n
    Content-Length: 12\r\n
    \r\n
    query_string

So, to answer your question: if the URL you are interested in POSTing to is http://api.somesite.com/apikey=ARG1&command=ARG2 then there is no body or query string and, consequently, no reason to POST because there is nothing to put in the body of the message and so nothing to put in the Content-Type: and Content-Length:

I guess you could POST if you really wanted to. In that case your message would look like:

POST /apikey=ARG1&command=ARG2 HTTP/1.0\r\n
\r\n

So to send the message the C program needs to:

  • create a socket
  • lookup the IP address
  • open the socket
  • send the request
  • wait for the response
  • close the socket

The send and receive calls won't necessarily send/receive ALL the data you give them - they will return the number of bytes actually sent/received. It is up to you to call them in a loop and send/receive the remainder of the message.

What I did not do in this sample is any sort of real error checking - when something fails I just exit the program. Let me know if it works for you:

#include <stdio.h> /* printf, sprintf */
#include <stdlib.h> /* exit */
#include <unistd.h> /* read, write, close */
#include <string.h> /* memcpy, memset */
#include <sys/socket.h> /* socket, connect */
#include <netinet/in.h> /* struct sockaddr_in, struct sockaddr */
#include <netdb.h> /* struct hostent, gethostbyname */

void error(const char *msg) { perror(msg); exit(0); }

int main(int argc,char *argv[])
{
    /* first what are we going to send and where are we going to send it? */
    int portno =        80;
    char *host =        "api.somesite.com";
    char *message_fmt = "POST /apikey=%s&command=%s HTTP/1.0\r\n\r\n";

    struct hostent *server;
    struct sockaddr_in serv_addr;
    int sockfd, bytes, sent, received, total;
    char message[1024],response[4096];

    if (argc < 3) { puts("Parameters: <apikey> <command>"); exit(0); }

    /* fill in the parameters */
    sprintf(message,message_fmt,argv[1],argv[2]);
    printf("Request:\n%s\n",message);

    /* create the socket */
    sockfd = socket(AF_INET, SOCK_STREAM, 0);
    if (sockfd < 0) error("ERROR opening socket");

    /* lookup the ip address */
    server = gethostbyname(host);
    if (server == NULL) error("ERROR, no such host");

    /* fill in the structure */
    memset(&serv_addr,0,sizeof(serv_addr));
    serv_addr.sin_family = AF_INET;
    serv_addr.sin_port = htons(portno);
    memcpy(&serv_addr.sin_addr.s_addr,server->h_addr,server->h_length);

    /* connect the socket */
    if (connect(sockfd,(struct sockaddr *)&serv_addr,sizeof(serv_addr)) < 0)
        error("ERROR connecting");

    /* send the request */
    total = strlen(message);
    sent = 0;
    do {
        bytes = write(sockfd,message+sent,total-sent);
        if (bytes < 0)
            error("ERROR writing message to socket");
        if (bytes == 0)
            break;
        sent+=bytes;
    } while (sent < total);

    /* receive the response */
    memset(response,0,sizeof(response));
    total = sizeof(response)-1;
    received = 0;
    do {
        bytes = read(sockfd,response+received,total-received);
        if (bytes < 0)
            error("ERROR reading response from socket");
        if (bytes == 0)
            break;
        received+=bytes;
    } while (received < total);

    if (received == total)
        error("ERROR storing complete response from socket");

    /* close the socket */
    close(sockfd);

    /* process response */
    printf("Response:\n%s\n",response);

    return 0;
}

Like the other answer pointed out, 4096 bytes is not a very big response. I picked that number at random assuming that the response to your request would be short. If it can be big you have two choices:

  • read the Content-Length: header from the response and then dynamically allocate enough memory to hold the whole response.
  • write the response to a file as the pieces arrive

Additional information to answer the question asked in the comments:

What if you want to POST data in the body of the message? Then you do need to include the Content-Type: and Content-Length: headers. The Content-Length: is the actual length of everything after the blank line that separates the header from the body.

Here is a sample that takes the following command line arguments:

  • host
  • port
  • command (GET or POST)
  • path (not including the query data)
  • query data (put into the query string for GET and into the body for POST)
  • list of headers (Content-Length: is automatic if using POST)

So, for the original question you would run:

a.out api.somesite.com 80 GET "/apikey=ARG1&command=ARG2"

And for the question asked in the comments you would run:

a.out api.somesite.com 80 POST / "name=ARG1&value=ARG2" "Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded"

Here is the code:

#include <stdio.h> /* printf, sprintf */
#include <stdlib.h> /* exit, atoi, malloc, free */
#include <unistd.h> /* read, write, close */
#include <string.h> /* memcpy, memset */

#include <netinet/in.h> /* struct sockaddr_in, struct sockaddr */
#include <netdb.h> /* struct hostent, gethostbyname */

When to use virtual destructors?

To be simple, Virtual destructor is to destruct the resources in a proper order, when you delete a base class pointer pointing to derived class object.

 #include<iostream>
 using namespace std;
 class B{
    public:
       B(){
          cout<<"B()\n";
       }
       virtual ~B(){
          cout<<"~B()\n";
       }
 };
 class D: public B{
    public:
       D(){
          cout<<"D()\n";
       }
       ~D(){
          cout<<"~D()\n";
       }
 };
 int main(){
    B *b = new D();
    delete b;
    return 0;
 }

OUTPUT:
B()
D()
~D()
~B()

==============
If you don't give ~B() as virtual. then output would be
B()
D()
~B()
where destruction of ~D() is not done which leads to leak

How to get the browser viewport dimensions?

This code is from http://andylangton.co.uk/articles/javascript/get-viewport-size-javascript/

function viewport() {
    var e = window, a = 'inner';
    if (!('innerWidth' in window )) {
        a = 'client';
        e = document.documentElement || document.body;
    }
    return { width : e[ a+'Width' ] , height : e[ a+'Height' ] };
}

NB : to read the width, use console.log('viewport width'+viewport().width);

Detect when an image fails to load in Javascript

The answer is nice, but it introduces one problem. Whenever you assign onload or onerror directly, it may replace the callback that was assigned earlier. That is why there's a nice method that "registers the specified listener on the EventTarget it's called on" as they say on MDN. You can register as many listeners as you want on the same event.

Let me rewrite the answer a little bit.

function testImage(url) {
    var tester = new Image();
    tester.addEventListener('load', imageFound);
    tester.addEventListener('error', imageNotFound);
    tester.src = url;
}

function imageFound() {
    alert('That image is found and loaded');
}

function imageNotFound() {
    alert('That image was not found.');
}

testImage("http://foo.com/bar.jpg");

Because the external resource loading process is asynchronous, it would be even nicer to use modern JavaScript with promises, such as the following.

function testImage(url) {

    // Define the promise
    const imgPromise = new Promise(function imgPromise(resolve, reject) {

        // Create the image
        const imgElement = new Image();

        // When image is loaded, resolve the promise
        imgElement.addEventListener('load', function imgOnLoad() {
            resolve(this);
        });

        // When there's an error during load, reject the promise
        imgElement.addEventListener('error', function imgOnError() {
            reject();
        })

        // Assign URL
        imgElement.src = url;

    });

    return imgPromise;
}

testImage("http://foo.com/bar.jpg").then(

    function fulfilled(img) {
        console.log('That image is found and loaded', img);
    },

    function rejected() {
        console.log('That image was not found');
    }

);

In what cases will HTTP_REFERER be empty

It will also be empty if the new Referrer Policy standard draft is used to prevent that the referer header is sent to the request origin. Example:

<meta name="referrer" content="none">

Although Chrome and Firefox have already implemented a draft version of the Referrer Policy, you should be careful with it because for example Chrome expects no-referrer instead of none (and I have seen also never somewhere).

How to replicate background-attachment fixed on iOS

It has been asked in the past, apparently it costs a lot to mobile browsers, so it's been disabled.

Check this comment by @PaulIrish:

How to get a file or blob from an object URL?

Unfortunately @BrianFreud's answer doesn't fit my needs, I had a little different need, and I know that is not the answer for @BrianFreud's question, but I am leaving it here because a lot of persons got here with my same need. I needed something like 'How to get a file or blob from an URL?', and the current correct answer does not fit my needs because its not cross-domain.

I have a website that consumes images from an Amazon S3/Azure Storage, and there I store objects named with uniqueidentifiers:

sample: http://****.blob.core.windows.net/systemimages/bf142dc9-0185-4aee-a3f4-1e5e95a09bcf

Some of this images should be download from our system interface. To avoid passing this traffic through my HTTP server, since this objects does not require any security to be accessed (except by domain filtering), I decided to make a direct request on user's browser and use local processing to give the file a real name and extension.

To accomplish that I have used this great article from Henry Algus: http://www.henryalgus.com/reading-binary-files-using-jquery-ajax/

1. First step: Add binary support to jquery

/**
*
* jquery.binarytransport.js
*
* @description. jQuery ajax transport for making binary data type requests.
* @version 1.0
* @author Henry Algus <[email protected]>
*
*/

// use this transport for "binary" data type
$.ajaxTransport("+binary", function (options, originalOptions, jqXHR) {
    // check for conditions and support for blob / arraybuffer response type
    if (window.FormData && ((options.dataType && (options.dataType == 'binary')) || (options.data && ((window.ArrayBuffer && options.data instanceof ArrayBuffer) || (window.Blob && options.data instanceof Blob))))) {
        return {
            // create new XMLHttpRequest
            send: function (headers, callback) {
                // setup all variables
                var xhr = new XMLHttpRequest(),
        url = options.url,
        type = options.type,
        async = options.async || true,
        // blob or arraybuffer. Default is blob
        dataType = options.responseType || "blob",
        data = options.data || null,
        username = options.username || null,
        password = options.password || null;

                xhr.addEventListener('load', function () {
                    var data = {};
                    data[options.dataType] = xhr.response;
                    // make callback and send data
                    callback(xhr.status, xhr.statusText, data, xhr.getAllResponseHeaders());
                });

                xhr.open(type, url, async, username, password);

                // setup custom headers
                for (var i in headers) {
                    xhr.setRequestHeader(i, headers[i]);
                }

                xhr.responseType = dataType;
                xhr.send(data);
            },
            abort: function () {
                jqXHR.abort();
            }
        };
    }
});

2. Second step: Make a request using this transport type.

function downloadArt(url)
{
    $.ajax(url, {
        dataType: "binary",
        processData: false
    }).done(function (data) {
        // just my logic to name/create files
        var filename = url.substr(url.lastIndexOf('/') + 1) + '.png';
        var blob = new Blob([data], { type: 'image/png' });

        saveAs(blob, filename);
    });
}

Now you can use the Blob created as you want to, in my case I want to save it to disk.

3. Optional: Save file on user's computer using FileSaver

I have used FileSaver.js to save to disk the downloaded file, if you need to accomplish that, please use this javascript library:

https://github.com/eligrey/FileSaver.js/

I expect this to help others with more specific needs.

How to install XCODE in windows 7 platform?

X-code is primarily made for OS-X or iPhone development on Mac systems. Versions for Windows are not available. However this might help!

There is no way to get Xcode on Windows; however you can use a different SDK like Corona instead although it will not use Objective-C (I believe it uses Lua). I have however heard that it is horrible to use.

Uncaught TypeError: Cannot use 'in' operator to search for 'length' in

The in operator only works on objects. You are using it on a string. Make sure your value is an object before you using $.each. In this specific case, you have to parse the JSON:

$.each(JSON.parse(myData), ...);

Getting "unixtime" in Java

Java 8 added a new API for working with dates and times. With Java 8 you can use

import java.time.Instant
...
long unixTimestamp = Instant.now().getEpochSecond();

Instant.now() returns an Instant that represents the current system time. With getEpochSecond() you get the epoch seconds (unix time) from the Instant.

Serialize an object to string

I was unable to use the JSONConvert method suggested by xhafan

In .Net 4.5 even after adding the "System.Web.Extensions" assembly reference I was still unable to access the JSONConvert.

However, once you add the reference you can get the same string print out using:

JavaScriptSerializer js = new JavaScriptSerializer();
string jsonstring = js.Serialize(yourClassObject);

string filename = "/tmp/filename.txt";

int main() {

This is what I had to do in order to use a variable for the filename instead of a regular string.

Syncing Android Studio project with Gradle files

I've had this problem after installing the genymotion (another android amulator) plugin. A closer inspection reveled that gradle needs SDK tools version 19.1.0 in order to run (I had 19.0.3 previously).

To fix it, I had to edit build.gradle and under android I changed to: buildToolsVersion 19.1.0

Then I had to rebuild again, and the error was gone.

Application not picking up .css file (flask/python)

Still having problems after following the solution provided by codegeek:
<link rel= "stylesheet" type= "text/css" href= "{{ url_for('static',filename='styles/mainpage.css') }}"> ?

In Google Chrome pressing the reload button (F5) will not reload the static files. If you have followed the accepted solution but still don't see the changes you have made to CSS, then press ctrl + shift + R to ignore cached files and reload the static files.

In Firefox pressing the reload button appears to reload the static files.

In Edge pressing the refresh button does not reload the static file. Pressing ctrl + shift + R is supposed to ignore cached files and reload the static files. However this does not work on my computer.

How to get started with Windows 7 gadgets

Combining and organizing all the current answers into one answer, then adding my own research:

Brief summary of Microsoft gadget development:

What are they written in? Windows Vista/Seven gadgets are developed in a mix of XML, HTML, CSS, and some IE scripting language. It is also possible to use C# with the latest release of Script#.

How are they packaged/deployed? The actual gadgets are stored in *.gadget files, which are simply the text source files listed above compressed into a single zip file.

Useful references for gadget development:

What do I need to know? Some other useful references; not necessarily instructional

Update: Well, this has proven to be a popular answer~ Sharing my own recent experience with Windows 7 gadget development:

Perhaps the easiest way to get started with Windows 7 gadget development is to modify a gadget that has already been developed. I recently did this myself because I wanted a larger clock gadget. Unable to find any, I tinkered with a copy of the standard Windows clock gadget until it was twice as large. I recommend starting with the clock gadget because it is fairly small and well-written. Here is the process I used:

  1. Locate the gadget you wish to modify. They are located in several different places. Search for folders named *.gadget. Example: C:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\Clock.Gadget\
  2. Make a copy of this folder (installed gadgets are not wrapped in zip files.)
  3. Rename some key parts:
    1. The folder name
    2. The name inside the gadget.xml file. It looks like:<name>Clock</name> This is the name that will be displayed in the "Gadgets Gallery" window.
  4. Zip up the entire *.gadget directory.
  5. Change the file extension from "zip" to "gadget" (Probably just need to remove the ".zip" extension.)
  6. Install your new copy of the gadget by double clicking the new *.gadget file. You can now add your gadget like any other gadget (right click desktop->Gadgets)
  7. Locate where this gadget is installed (probably to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\)
  8. Modify the files in this directory. The gadget is very similar to a web page: HTML, CSS, JS, and image files. The gadget.xml file specifies which file is opened as the "index" page for the gadget.
  9. After you save the changes, view the results by installing a new instance of the gadget. You can also debug the JavaScript (The rest of that article is pretty informative, too).

How to compile c# in Microsoft's new Visual Studio Code?

Install the extension "Code Runner". Check if you can compile your program with csc (ex.: csc hello.cs). The command csc is shipped with Mono. Then add this to your VS Code user settings:

"code-runner.executorMap": {
        "csharp": "echo '# calling mono\n' && cd $dir && csc /nologo $fileName && mono $dir$fileNameWithoutExt.exe",
        // "csharp": "echo '# calling dotnet run\n' && dotnet run"
    }

Open your C# file and use the execution key of Code Runner.

Edit: also added dotnet run, so you can choose how you want to execute your program: with Mono, or with dotnet. If you choose dotnet, then first create the project (dotnet new console, dotnet restore).

Compute elapsed time

var StopWatch = function (performance) {
    this.startTime = 0;
    this.stopTime = 0;
    this.running = false;
    this.performance = performance === false ? false : !!window.performance;
};

StopWatch.prototype.currentTime = function () {
    return this.performance ? window.performance.now() : new Date().getTime();
};

StopWatch.prototype.start = function () {
    this.startTime = this.currentTime();
    this.running = true;
};

StopWatch.prototype.stop = function () {
    this.stopTime = this.currentTime();
    this.running = false;
};

StopWatch.prototype.getElapsedMilliseconds = function () {
    if (this.running) {
        this.stopTime = this.currentTime();
    }

    return this.stopTime - this.startTime;
};

StopWatch.prototype.getElapsedSeconds = function () {
    return this.getElapsedMilliseconds() / 1000;
};

StopWatch.prototype.printElapsed = function (name) {
    var currentName = name || 'Elapsed:';

    console.log(currentName, '[' + this.getElapsedMilliseconds() + 'ms]', '[' + this.getElapsedSeconds() + 's]');
};

Benchmark

var stopwatch = new StopWatch();
stopwatch.start();

for (var index = 0; index < 100; index++) {
    stopwatch.printElapsed('Instance[' + index + ']');
}

stopwatch.stop();

stopwatch.printElapsed();

Output

Instance[0] [0ms] [0s]
Instance[1] [2.999999967869371ms] [0.002999999967869371s]
Instance[2] [2.999999967869371ms] [0.002999999967869371s]
/* ... */
Instance[99] [10.999999998603016ms] [0.010999999998603016s]
Elapsed: [10.999999998603016ms] [0.010999999998603016s]

performance.now() is optional - just pass false into StopWatch constructor function.

What is the difference between the float and integer data type when the size is the same?

  • float stores floating-point values, that is, values that have potential decimal places
  • int only stores integral values, that is, whole numbers

So while both are 32 bits wide, their use (and representation) is quite different. You cannot store 3.141 in an integer, but you can in a float.

Dissecting them both a little further:

In an integer, all bits are used to store the number value. This is (in Java and many computers too) done in the so-called two's complement. This basically means that you can represent the values of −231 to 231 − 1.

In a float, those 32 bits are divided between three distinct parts: The sign bit, the exponent and the mantissa. They are laid out as follows:

S EEEEEEEE MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

There is a single bit that determines whether the number is negative or non-negative (zero is neither positive nor negative, but has the sign bit set to zero). Then there are eight bits of an exponent and 23 bits of mantissa. To get a useful number from that, (roughly) the following calculation is performed:

M × 2E

(There is more to it, but this should suffice for the purpose of this discussion)

The mantissa is in essence not much more than a 24-bit integer number. This gets multiplied by 2 to the power of the exponent part, which, roughly, is a number between −128 and 127.

Therefore you can accurately represent all numbers that would fit in a 24-bit integer but the numeric range is also much greater as larger exponents allow for larger values. For example, the maximum value for a float is around 3.4 × 1038 whereas int only allows values up to 2.1 × 109.

But that also means, since 32 bits only have 4.2 × 109 different states (which are all used to represent the values int can store), that at the larger end of float's numeric range the numbers are spaced wider apart (since there cannot be more unique float numbers than there are unique int numbers). You cannot represent some numbers exactly, then. For example, the number 2 × 1012 has a representation in float of 1,999,999,991,808. That might be close to 2,000,000,000,000 but it's not exact. Likewise, adding 1 to that number does not change it because 1 is too small to make a difference in the larger scales float is using there.

Similarly, you can also represent very small numbers (between 0 and 1) in a float but regardless of whether the numbers are very large or very small, float only has a precision of around 6 or 7 decimal digits. If you have large numbers those digits are at the start of the number (e.g. 4.51534 × 1035, which is nothing more than 451534 follows by 30 zeroes – and float cannot tell anything useful about whether those 30 digits are actually zeroes or something else), for very small numbers (e.g. 3.14159 × 10−27) they are at the far end of the number, way beyond the starting digits of 0.0000...

Array to String PHP?

You can use the PHP string function implode()

Like,

<?php
  $sports=$_POST['sports'];;
  $festival=$_POST['festival'];
  $food=$_POST['food'];
  $array=[$sports,$festival,$food];
  $string=implode('|',$array);
  echo $string;
?>

If, for example, $sports='football'; $festival='janmastami'; $food='biriyani';

Then output would be:

football|janmastami|biriyani

How to convert an xml string to a dictionary?

The code from http://code.activestate.com/recipes/410469-xml-as-dictionary/ works well, but if there are multiple elements that are the same at a given place in the hierarchy it just overrides them.

I added a shim between that looks to see if the element already exists before self.update(). If so, pops the existing entry and creates a lists out of the existing and the new. Any subsequent duplicates are added to the list.

Not sure if this can be handled more gracefully, but it works:

import xml.etree.ElementTree as ElementTree

class XmlDictConfig(dict):
    def __init__(self, parent_element):
        if parent_element.items():
            self.updateShim(dict(parent_element.items()))
        for element in parent_element:
            if len(element):
                aDict = XmlDictConfig(element)
                if element.items():
                    aDict.updateShim(dict(element.items()))
                self.updateShim({element.tag: aDict})
            elif element.items():
                self.updateShim({element.tag: dict(element.items())})
            else:
                self.updateShim({element.tag: element.text.strip()})

    def updateShim (self, aDict ):
        for key in aDict.keys():
            if key in self:
                value = self.pop(key)
                if type(value) is not list:
                    listOfDicts = []
                    listOfDicts.append(value)
                    listOfDicts.append(aDict[key])
                    self.update({key: listOfDicts})

                else:
                    value.append(aDict[key])
                    self.update({key: value})
            else:
                self.update(aDict)

What is the most efficient way to create HTML elements using jQuery?

If you have a lot of HTML content (more than just a single div), you might consider building the HTML into the page within a hidden container, then updating it and making it visible when needed. This way, a large portion of your markup can be pre-parsed by the browser and avoid getting bogged down by JavaScript when called. Hope this helps!

How to do a deep comparison between 2 objects with lodash?

I need to know if they have difference in one of their nested properties

Other answers provide potentially satisfactory solutions to this problem, but it is sufficiently difficult and common that it looks like there's a very popular package to help solve this issue deep-object-diff.

To use this package you'd need to npm i deep-object-diff then:

const { diff } = require('deep-object-diff');
var a = {};
var b = {};

a.prop1 = 2;
a.prop2 = { prop3: 2 };

b.prop1 = 2;
b.prop2 = { prop3: 3 };

if (!_.isEqual(a, b)) {
  const abDiff = diff(a, b);
  console.log(abDiff);
  /*
  {
    prop2: {
      prop3: 3
    }
  }
  */
}

// or alternatively
const abDiff = diff(a, b);
if(!_.isEmpty(abDiff)) {
  // if a diff exists then they aren't deeply equal
  // perform needed actions with diff...
}

Here's a more detailed case with property deletions directly from their docs:

const lhs = {
  foo: {
    bar: {
      a: ['a', 'b'],
      b: 2,
      c: ['x', 'y'],
      e: 100 // deleted
    }
  },
  buzz: 'world'
};

const rhs = {
  foo: {
    bar: {
      a: ['a'], // index 1 ('b')  deleted
      b: 2, // unchanged
      c: ['x', 'y', 'z'], // 'z' added
      d: 'Hello, world!' // added
    }
  },
  buzz: 'fizz' // updated
};

console.log(diff(lhs, rhs)); // =>
/*
{
  foo: {
    bar: {
      a: {
        '1': undefined
      },
      c: {
        '2': 'z'
      },
      d: 'Hello, world!',
      e: undefined
    }
  },
  buzz: 'fizz'
}
*/

Laravel 5 Class 'form' not found

There is an update to this for Laravel 5.2. Notice this is a slightly different format from what is indicated above.

Begin by installing this package through Composer. Edit your project's composer.json file to require laravelcollective/html.

"require": {
    "laravelcollective/html": "5.2.*"
}

Next, update Composer from the Terminal:

composer update

Next, add your new provider to the providers array of config/app.php:

  'providers' => [
    // ...
    Collective\Html\HtmlServiceProvider::class,
    // ...
  ],

Finally, add two class aliases to the aliases array of config/app.php:

  'aliases' => [
    // ...
      'Form' => Collective\Html\FormFacade::class,
      'Html' => Collective\Html\HtmlFacade::class,
    // ...
  ],

After making this update this code worked for me on a new installation of Laravel 5.2:

{!! Form::open(array('url' => 'foo/bar')) !!}
    //
{!! Form::close() !!}

I got this information here: https://laravelcollective.com/docs/5.2/html

Why can't variables be declared in a switch statement?

Consider:

switch(val)
{
case VAL:
   int newVal = 42;
default:
   int newVal = 23;
}

In the absence of break statements, sometimes newVal gets declared twice, and you don't know whether it does until runtime. My guess is that the limitation is because of this kind of confusion. What would the scope of newVal be? Convention would dictate that it would be the whole of the switch block (between the braces).

I'm no C++ programmer, but in C:

switch(val) {
    int x;
    case VAL:
        x=1;
}

Works fine. Declaring a variable inside a switch block is fine. Declaring after a case guard is not.

C# Syntax - Example of a Lambda Expression - ForEach() over Generic List

Want to put out there that there is not much to worry about if someone provides an answer as an extension method because an extension method is just a cool way to call an instance method. I understand that you want the answer without using an extension method. Regardless if the method is defined as static, instance or extension - the result is the same.

The code below uses the code from the accepted answer to define an extension method and an instance method and creates a unit test to show the output is the same.

public static class Extensions
{
    public static void Each<T>(this IEnumerable<T> items, Action<T> action)
    {
        foreach (var item in items)
        {
            action(item);
        }
    }
}

[TestFixture]
public class ForEachTests
{
    public void Each<T>(IEnumerable<T> items, Action<T> action)
    {
        foreach (var item in items)
        {
            action(item);
        }
    }

    private string _extensionOutput;

    private void SaveExtensionOutput(string value)
    {
        _extensionOutput += value;
    }

    private string _instanceOutput;

    private void SaveInstanceOutput(string value)
    {
        _instanceOutput += value;
    }

    [Test]
    public void Test1()
    {
        string[] teams = new string[] {"cowboys", "falcons", "browns", "chargers", "rams", "seahawks", "lions", "heat", "blackhawks", "penguins", "pirates"};

        Each(teams, SaveInstanceOutput);

        teams.Each(SaveExtensionOutput);

        Assert.AreEqual(_extensionOutput, _instanceOutput);
    }
}

Quite literally, the only thing you need to do to convert an extension method to an instance method is remove the static modifier and the first parameter of the method.

This method

public static void Each<T>(this IEnumerable<T> items, Action<T> action)
{
    foreach (var item in items)
    {
        action(item);
    }
 }

becomes

public void Each<T>(Action<T> action)
{
    foreach (var item in items)
    {
        action(item);
    }
 }

Convert string to datetime

DateTime.strptime allows you to specify the format and convert a String to a DateTime.

Android - how to replace part of a string by another string?

rekaszeru

I noticed that you commented in 2011 but i thought i should post this answer anyway, in case anyone needs to "replace the original string" and runs into this answer ..

Im using a EditText as an example

// GIVE TARGET TEXT BOX A NAME

 EditText textbox = (EditText) findViewById(R.id.your_textboxID);

// STRING TO REPLACE

 String oldText = "hello"
 String newText = "Hi";
 String textBoxText = textbox.getText().toString();

// REPLACE STRINGS WITH RETURNED STRINGS

String returnedString = textBoxText.replace( oldText, newText );

// USE RETURNED STRINGS TO REPLACE NEW STRING INSIDE TEXTBOX

textbox.setText(returnedString);

This is untested, but it's just an example of using the returned string to replace the original layouts string with setText() !

Obviously this example requires that you have a EditText with the ID set to your_textboxID

Retrieve last 100 lines logs

"tail" is command to display the last part of a file, using proper available switches helps us to get more specific output. the most used switch for me is -n and -f

SYNOPSIS

tail [-F | -f | -r] [-q] [-b number | -c number | -n number] [file ...]

Here

-n number : The location is number lines.

-f : The -f option causes tail to not stop when end of file is reached, but rather to wait for additional data to be appended to the input. The -f option is ignored if the standard input is a pipe, but not if it is a FIFO.

Retrieve last 100 lines logs

To get last static 100 lines
     tail -n 100 <file path>

To get real time last 100 lines
     tail -f -n 100 <file path>

Can I use multiple versions of jQuery on the same page?

Yes, it's doable due to jQuery's noconflict mode. http://blog.nemikor.com/2009/10/03/using-multiple-versions-of-jquery/

<!-- load jQuery 1.1.3 -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://example.com/jquery-1.1.3.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var jQuery_1_1_3 = $.noConflict(true);
</script>

<!-- load jQuery 1.3.2 -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://example.com/jquery-1.3.2.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">
var jQuery_1_3_2 = $.noConflict(true);
</script>

Then, instead of $('#selector').function();, you'd do jQuery_1_3_2('#selector').function(); or jQuery_1_1_3('#selector').function();.

current/duration time of html5 video?

This page might help you out. Everything you need to know about HTML5 video and audio

var video = document.createElement('video');
var curtime = video.currentTime;

If you already have the video element, .currentTime should work. If you need more details, that webpage should be able to help.

XSLT equivalent for JSON

JSLT is very close to a JSON equivalent of XSLT. It's a transform language where you write the fixed part of the output in JSON syntax, then insert expressions to compute the values you want to insert in the template.

An example:

{
  "time": round(parse-time(.published, "yyyy-MM-dd'T'HH:mm:ssX") * 1000),
  "device_manufacturer": .device.manufacturer,
  "device_model": .device.model,
  "language": .device.acceptLanguage
}

It's implemented in Java on top of Jackson.

How to show Snackbar when Activity starts?

It can be done simply by using the following codes inside onCreate. By using android's default layout

Snackbar.make(findViewById(android.R.id.content),"Your Message",Snackbar.LENGTH_LONG).show();

origin 'http://localhost:4200' has been blocked by CORS policy in Angular7

You are all good at Angular side even postman not raise the cors policy issue. This type of issue is solved at back-end side in major cases.

If you are using Spring boot the you can avoid this issue by placing this annotation at your controller class or at any particular method.

@CrossOrigin(origins = "http://localhost:4200")

In case of global configuration with spring boot configure following two class:

}
`

@Configuration
@EnableWebMvc
public class WebConfig implements WebMvcConfigurer {

How does Trello access the user's clipboard?

With the help of raincoat's code on GitHub, I managed to get a running version accessing the clipboard with plain JavaScript.

function TrelloClipboard() {
    var me = this;

    var utils = {
        nodeName: function (node, name) {
            return !!(node.nodeName.toLowerCase() === name)
        }
    }
    var textareaId = 'simulate-trello-clipboard',
        containerId = textareaId + '-container',
        container, textarea

    var createTextarea = function () {
        container = document.querySelector('#' + containerId)
        if (!container) {
            container = document.createElement('div')
            container.id = containerId
            container.setAttribute('style', [, 'position: fixed;', 'left: 0px;', 'top: 0px;', 'width: 0px;', 'height: 0px;', 'z-index: 100;', 'opacity: 0;'].join(''))
            document.body.appendChild(container)
        }
        container.style.display = 'block'
        textarea = document.createElement('textarea')
        textarea.setAttribute('style', [, 'width: 1px;', 'height: 1px;', 'padding: 0px;'].join(''))
        textarea.id = textareaId
        container.innerHTML = ''
        container.appendChild(textarea)

        textarea.appendChild(document.createTextNode(me.value))
        textarea.focus()
        textarea.select()
    }

    var keyDownMonitor = function (e) {
        var code = e.keyCode || e.which;
        if (!(e.ctrlKey || e.metaKey)) {
            return
        }
        var target = e.target
        if (utils.nodeName(target, 'textarea') || utils.nodeName(target, 'input')) {
            return
        }
        if (window.getSelection && window.getSelection() && window.getSelection().toString()) {
            return
        }
        if (document.selection && document.selection.createRange().text) {
            return
        }
        setTimeout(createTextarea, 0)
    }

    var keyUpMonitor = function (e) {
        var code = e.keyCode || e.which;
        if (e.target.id !== textareaId || code !== 67) {
            return
        }
        container.style.display = 'none'
    }

    document.addEventListener('keydown', keyDownMonitor)
    document.addEventListener('keyup', keyUpMonitor)
}

TrelloClipboard.prototype.setValue = function (value) {
    this.value = value;
}

var clip = new TrelloClipboard();
clip.setValue("test");

How to change Hash values?

If you know that the values are strings, you can call the replace method on them while in the cycle: this way you will change the value.

Altohugh this is limited to the case in which the values are strings and hence doesn't answer the question fully, I thought it can be useful to someone.

How to prevent a jQuery Ajax request from caching in Internet Explorer?

If you set unique parameters, then the cache does not work, for example:

$.ajax({
    url : "my_url",
    data : {
        'uniq_param' : (new Date()).getTime(),
        //other data
    }});

How to load a controller from another controller in codeigniter?

There are many ways by which you can access one controller into another.

class Test1 extends CI_controller
{
    function testfunction(){
        return 1;
    }
}

Then create another class, and include first Class in it, and extend it with your class.

include 'Test1.php';

class Test extends Test1
{
    function myfunction(){
        $this->test();
        echo 1;
    }
}

How to make a page redirect using JavaScript?

You can achieve this using the location object.

location.href = "http://someurl";

Get custom product attributes in Woocommerce

Update for 2018. You can use:

global $product;
echo wc_display_product_attributes( $product );

To customise the output, copy plugins/woocommerce/templates/single-product/product-attributes.php to themes/theme-child/woocommerce/single-product/product-attributes.php and modify that.

Reading a file line by line in Go

Another method is to use the io/ioutil and strings libraries to read the entire file's bytes, convert them into a string and split them using a "\n" (newline) character as the delimiter, for example:

import (
    "io/ioutil"
    "strings"
)

func main() {
    bytesRead, _ := ioutil.ReadFile("something.txt")
    file_content := string(bytesRead)
    lines := strings.Split(file_content, "\n")
}

Technically you're not reading the file line-by-line, however you are able to parse each line using this technique. This method is applicable to smaller files. If you're attempting to parse a massive file use one of the techniques that reads line-by-line.

MySQL: @variable vs. variable. What's the difference?

In principle, I use UserDefinedVariables (prepended with @) within Stored Procedures. This makes life easier, especially when I need these variables in two or more Stored Procedures. Just when I need a variable only within ONE Stored Procedure, than I use a System Variable (without prepended @).

@Xybo: I don't understand why using @variables in StoredProcedures should be risky. Could you please explain "scope" and "boundaries" a little bit easier (for me as a newbe)?

Target elements with multiple classes, within one rule

.border-blue.background { ... } is for one item with multiple classes.
.border-blue, .background { ... } is for multiple items each with their own class.
.border-blue .background { ... } is for one item where '.background' is the child of '.border-blue'.

See Chris' answer for a more thorough explanation.

Using Cookie in Asp.Net Mvc 4

Try using Response.SetCookie(), because Response.Cookies.Add() can cause multiple cookies to be added, whereas SetCookie will update an existing cookie.

What exactly is \r in C language?

Once upon a time, people had terminals like typewriters (with only upper-case letters, but that's another story). Search for 'Teletype', and how do you think tty got used for 'terminal device'?

Those devices had two separate motions. The carriage return moved the print head back to the start of the line without scrolling the paper; the line feed character moved the paper up a line without moving the print head back to the beginning of the line. So, on those devices, you needed two control characters to get the print head back to the start of the next line: a carriage return and a line feed. Because this was mechanical, it took time, so you had to pause for long enough before sending more characters to the terminal after sending the CR and LF characters. One use for CR without LF was to do 'bold' by overstriking the characters on the line. You'd write the line out once, then use CR to start over and print twice over the characters that needed to be bold. You could also, of course, type X's over stuff that you wanted partially hidden, or create very dense ASCII art pictures with judicious overstriking.

On Unix, all the logic for this stuff was hidden in a terminal driver. You could use the stty command and the underlying functions (in those days, ioctl() calls; they were sanitized into the termios interface by POSIX.1 in 1988) to tweak all sorts of ways that the terminal behaved.

Eventually, you got 'glass terminals' where the speeds were greater and and there were new idiosyncrasies to deal with - Hazeltine glitches and so on and so forth. These got enshrined in the termcap and later terminfo libraries, and then further encapsulated behind the curses library.

However, some other (non-Unix) systems did not hide things as well, and you had to deal with CRLF in your text files - and no, this is not just Windows and DOS that were in the 'CRLF' camp.

Anyway, on some systems, the C library has to deal with text files that contain CRLF line endings and presents those to you as if there were only a newline at the end of the line. However, if you choose to treat the text file as a binary file, you will see the CR characters as well as the LF.

Systems like the old Mac OS (version 9 or earlier) used just CR (aka \r) for the line ending. Systems like DOS and Windows (and, I believe, many of the DEC systems such as VMS and RSTS) used CRLF for the line ending. Many of the Internet standards (such as mail) mandate CRLF line endings. And Unix has always used just LF (aka NL or newline, hence \n) for its line endings. And most people, most of the time, manage to ignore CR.

Your code is rather funky in looking for \r. On a system compliant with the C standard, you won't see the CR unless the file is opened in binary mode; the CRLF or CR will be mapped to NL by the C runtime library.

SQL Server remove milliseconds from datetime

You just have to figure out the millisecond part of the date and subtract it out before comparison, like this:

select *
from table
where DATEADD(ms, -DATEPART(ms, date), date) > '2010-07-20 03:21:52'

Twitter Bootstrap vs jQuery UI?

You can use both with relatively few issues. Twitter Bootstrap uses jQuery 1.7.1 (as of this writing), and I can't think of any reasons why you cannot integrate additional Jquery UI components into your HTML templates.

I've been using a combination of HTML5 Boilerplate & Twitter Bootstrap built at Initializr.com. This combines two awesome starter templates into one great starter project. Check out the details at http://html5boilerplate.com/ and http://www.initializr.com/ Or to get started right away, go to http://www.initializr.com/, click the "Bootstrap 2" button, and click "Download It". This will give you all the js and css you need to get started.

And don't be scared off by HTML5 and CSS3. Initializr and HTML5 Boilerplate include polyfills and IE specific code that will allow all features to work in IE 6, 7 8, and 9.

The use of LESS in Twitter Bootstrap is also optional. They use LESS to compile all the CSS that is used by Bootstrap, but if you just want to override or add your own styles, they provide an empty css file for that purpose.

There is also a blank js file (script.js) for you to add custom code. This is where you would add your handlers or selectors for additional jQueryUI components.

iOS 7 App Icons, Launch images And Naming Convention While Keeping iOS 6 Icons

Absolutely Asset Catalog is you answer, it removes the need to follow naming conventions when you are adding or updating your app icons.

Below are the steps to Migrating an App Icon Set or Launch Image Set From Apple:

1- In the project navigator, select your target.

2- Select the General pane, and scroll to the App Icons section.

enter image description here

3- Specify an image in the App Icon table by clicking the folder icon on the right side of the image row and selecting the image file in the dialog that appears.

enter image description here

4-Migrate the images in the App Icon table to an asset catalog by clicking the Use Asset Catalog button, selecting an asset catalog from the popup menu, and clicking the Migrate button.

enter image description here

Alternatively, you can create an empty app icon set by choosing Editor > New App Icon, and add images to the set by dragging them from the Finder or by choosing Editor > Import.

How do I set the request timeout for one controller action in an asp.net mvc application

<location path="ControllerName/ActionName">
    <system.web>
        <httpRuntime executionTimeout="1000"/>
    </system.web>
</location>

Probably it is better to set such values in web.config instead of controller. Hardcoding of configurable options is considered harmful.

Using css transform property in jQuery

Setting a -vendor prefix that isn't supported in older browsers can cause them to throw an exception with .css. Instead detect the supported prefix first:

// Start with a fall back
var newCss = { 'zoom' : ui.value };

// Replace with transform, if supported
if('WebkitTransform' in document.body.style)
{
    newCss = { '-webkit-transform': 'scale(' + ui.value + ')'};
}
// repeat for supported browsers
else if('transform' in document.body.style)
{
    newCss = { 'transform': 'scale(' + ui.value + ')'};
}

// Set the CSS
$('.user-text').css(newCss)

That works in old browsers. I've done scale here but you could replace it with whatever other transform you wanted.

Difference between the 'controller', 'link' and 'compile' functions when defining a directive

  1. running code before Compilation : use controller
  2. running code after Compilation : use Link

Angular convention : write business logic in controller and DOM manipulation in link.

Apart from this you can call one controller function from link function of another directive.For example you have 3 custom directives

<animal>
<panther>
<leopard></leopard>
</panther>
</animal>

and you want to access animal from inside of "leopard" directive.

http://egghead.io/lessons/angularjs-directive-communication will be helpful to know about inter-directive communication

'const string' vs. 'static readonly string' in C#

const

public const string MyStr;

is a compile time constant (you can use it as the default parameter for a method parameter for example), and it will not be obfuscated if you use such technology

static readonly

public static readonly string MyStr;

is runtime constant. It means that it is evaluated when the application is launched and not before. This is why it can't be used as the default parameter for a method (compilation error) for example. The value stored in it can be obfuscated.

How should a model be structured in MVC?

Everything that is business logic belongs in a model, whether it is a database query, calculations, a REST call, etc.

You can have the data access in the model itself, the MVC pattern doesn't restrict you from doing that. You can sugar coat it with services, mappers and what not, but the actual definition of a model is a layer that handles business logic, nothing more, nothing less. It can be a class, a function, or a complete module with a gazillion objects if that's what you want.

It's always easier to have a separate object that actually executes the database queries instead of having them being executed in the model directly: this will especially come in handy when unit testing (because of the easiness of injecting a mock database dependency in your model):

class Database {
   protected $_conn;

   public function __construct($connection) {
       $this->_conn = $connection;
   }

   public function ExecuteObject($sql, $data) {
       // stuff
   }
}

abstract class Model {
   protected $_db;

   public function __construct(Database $db) {
       $this->_db = $db;
   }
}

class User extends Model {
   public function CheckUsername($username) {
       // ...
       $sql = "SELECT Username FROM" . $this->usersTableName . " WHERE ...";
       return $this->_db->ExecuteObject($sql, $data);
   }
}

$db = new Database($conn);
$model = new User($db);
$model->CheckUsername('foo');

Also, in PHP, you rarely need to catch/rethrow exceptions because the backtrace is preserved, especially in a case like your example. Just let the exception be thrown and catch it in the controller instead.

Set selected item of spinner programmatically

public static void selectSpinnerItemByValue(Spinner spnr, long value) {
    SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = (SimpleCursorAdapter) spnr.getAdapter();
    for (int position = 0; position < adapter.getCount(); position++) {
        if(adapter.getItemId(position) == value) {
            spnr.setSelection(position);
            return;
        }
    }
}

You can use the above like:

selectSpinnerItemByValue(spinnerObject, desiredValue);

& of course you can also select by index directly like

spinnerObject.setSelection(index);

Get name of property as a string

Okay, here's what I ended up creating (based upon the answer I selected and the question he referenced):

// <summary>
// Get the name of a static or instance property from a property access lambda.
// </summary>
// <typeparam name="T">Type of the property</typeparam>
// <param name="propertyLambda">lambda expression of the form: '() => Class.Property' or '() => object.Property'</param>
// <returns>The name of the property</returns>

public string GetPropertyName<T>(Expression<Func<T>> propertyLambda)
{
    var me = propertyLambda.Body as MemberExpression;

    if (me == null)
    {
        throw new ArgumentException("You must pass a lambda of the form: '() => Class.Property' or '() => object.Property'");
    }

    return me.Member.Name;
 }

Usage:

// Static Property
string name = GetPropertyName(() => SomeClass.SomeProperty);

// Instance Property
string name = GetPropertyName(() => someObject.SomeProperty);

Class JavaLaunchHelper is implemented in two places

You can find all the details here:

  • IDEA-170117 "objc: Class JavaLaunchHelper is implemented in both ..." warning in Run consoles

It's the old bug in Java on Mac that got triggered by the Java Agent being used by the IDE when starting the app. This message is harmless and is safe to ignore. Oracle developer's comment:

The message is benign, there is no negative impact from this problem since both copies of that class are identical (compiled from the exact same source). It is purely a cosmetic issue.

The problem is fixed in Java 9 and in Java 8 update 152.

If it annoys you or affects your apps in any way (it shouldn't), the workaround for IntelliJ IDEA is to disable idea_rt launcher agent by adding idea.no.launcher=true into idea.properties (Help | Edit Custom Properties...). The workaround will take effect on the next restart of the IDE.

I don't recommend disabling IntelliJ IDEA launcher agent, though. It's used for such features as graceful shutdown (Exit button), thread dumps, workarounds a problem with too long command line exceeding OS limits, etc. Losing these features just for the sake of hiding the harmless message is probably not worth it, but it's up to you.

SSIS - Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page - Special Characters

If you go to the Flat file connection manager under Advanced and Look at the "OutputColumnWidth" description's ToolTip It will tell you that Composit characters may use more spaces. So the "é" in "Société" most likely occupies more than one character.

EDIT: Here's something about it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Precomposed_character

Spark - load CSV file as DataFrame?

With in-built Spark csv, you can get it done easily with new SparkSession object for Spark > 2.0.

val df = spark.
        read.
        option("inferSchema", "false").
        option("header","true").
        option("mode","DROPMALFORMED").
        option("delimiter", ";").
        schema(dataSchema).
        csv("/csv/file/dir/file.csv")
df.show()
df.printSchema()

There are various options you can set.

  • header: whether your file includes header line at the top
  • inferSchema: whether you want to infer schema automatically or not. Default is true. I always prefer to provide schema to ensure proper datatypes.
  • mode: parsing mode, PERMISSIVE, DROPMALFORMED or FAILFAST
  • delimiter: to specify delimiter, default is comma(',')

How do I convert a IPython Notebook into a Python file via commandline?

If you don't want to output a Python script every time you save, or you don't want to restart the IPython kernel:

On the command line, you can use nbconvert:

$ jupyter nbconvert --to script [YOUR_NOTEBOOK].ipynb

As a bit of a hack, you can even call the above command in an IPython notebook by pre-pending ! (used for any command line argument). Inside a notebook:

!jupyter nbconvert --to script config_template.ipynb

Before --to script was added, the option was --to python or --to=python, but it was renamed in the move toward a language-agnostic notebook system.

How to index characters in a Golang string?

Where is the <conio.h> header file on Linux? Why can't I find <conio.h>?

The original conio.h was implemented by Borland, so its not a part of the C Standard Library nor is defined by POSIX.

But here is an implementation for Linux that uses ncurses to do the job.

Laravel view not found exception

Somewhat embarrassingly, I discovered another rather trivial cause for this error: I had a full stop in the filename of my blade file (eg resources/views/pages/user.invitation.blade.php). It really did make sense at the time!

I was trying to reference it like so: view('pages.user.invitation')

but of course Laravel was looking for the file at resources/views/pages/user/invitation.blade.php and throwing the view not found.

Hope this helps someone.

jQuery removeClass wildcard

I had the same issue and came up with the following that uses underscore's _.filter method. Once I discovered that removeClass takes a function and provides you with a list of classnames, it was easy to turn that into an array and filter out the classname to return back to the removeClass method.

// Wildcard removeClass on 'color-*'
$('[class^="color-"]').removeClass (function (index, classes) {
  var
    classesArray = classes.split(' '),
    removeClass = _.filter(classesArray, function(className){ return className.indexOf('color-') === 0; }).toString();

  return removeClass;
});

PowerShell script to return members of multiple security groups

This will give you a list of a single group, and the members of each group.

    write-host "$($group.name)"

write-host "Export Complete"

If you want the friendly name, or other details, add them to the end of the select-object query.

PL/SQL print out ref cursor returned by a stored procedure

Note: This code is untested

Define a record for your refCursor return type, call it rec. For example:

TYPE MyRec IS RECORD (col1 VARCHAR2(10), col2 VARCHAR2(20), ...);  --define the record
rec MyRec; -- instantiate the record

Once you have the refcursor returned from your procedure, you can add the following code where your comments are now:

  FETCH refCursor INTO rec;
  EXIT WHEN refCursor%NOTFOUND;
  dbms_output.put_line(rec.col1||','||rec.col2||','||...);
END LOOP;

MySQL Delete all rows from table and reset ID to zero

If table has foreign keys then I always use following code:

SET FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS = 0; -- disable a foreign keys check
SET AUTOCOMMIT = 0; -- disable autocommit
START TRANSACTION; -- begin transaction

/*
DELETE FROM table_name;
ALTER TABLE table_name AUTO_INCREMENT = 1;
-- or
TRUNCATE table_name;
-- or
DROP TABLE table_name;
CREATE TABLE table_name ( ... );
*/

SET FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS = 1; -- enable a foreign keys check
COMMIT;  -- make a commit
SET AUTOCOMMIT = 1 ;

But difference will be in execution time. Look at above Sorin's answer.

Java: Add elements to arraylist with FOR loop where element name has increasing number

If you simply need a list, you could use:

List<Answer> answers = Arrays.asList(answer1, answer2, answer3);

If you specifically require an ArrayList, you could use:

ArrayList<Answer> answers = new ArrayList(Arrays.asList(answer1, answer2, answer3));

Difference between mkdir() and mkdirs() in java for java.io.File

mkdirs() will create the specified directory path in its entirety where mkdir() will only create the bottom most directory, failing if it can't find the parent directory of the directory it is trying to create.

In other words mkdir() is like mkdir and mkdirs() is like mkdir -p.

For example, imagine we have an empty /tmp directory. The following code

new File("/tmp/one/two/three").mkdirs();

would create the following directories:

  • /tmp/one
  • /tmp/one/two
  • /tmp/one/two/three

Where this code:

new File("/tmp/one/two/three").mkdir();

would not create any directories - as it wouldn't find /tmp/one/two - and would return false.

    {
        if (arr[j] < arr[i])
        {
            int temp = arr[i];
            arr[i] = arr[j];
            arr[j] = temp;
        }
    }
}
Console.ReadLine();

How can I measure the similarity between two images?

Don't video encoding algorithms like MPEG compute the difference between each frame of a video so they can just encode the delta? You might look into how video encoding algorithms compute those frame differences.

Look at this open source image search application http://www.semanticmetadata.net/lire/. It describes several image similarity algorighms, three of which are from the MPEG-7 standard: ScalableColor, ColorLayout, EdgeHistogram and Auto Color Correlogram.

How to get Toolbar from fragment?

You need to cast your activity from getActivity() to AppCompatActivity first. Here's an example:

((AppCompatActivity) getActivity()).getSupportActionBar().setTitle();

The reason you have to cast it is because getActivity() returns a FragmentActivity and you need an AppCompatActivity

In Kotlin:

(activity as AppCompatActivity).supportActionBar?.title = "My Title"

How to use SSH to run a local shell script on a remote machine?

First, copy the script over to Machine B using scp

[user@machineA]$ scp /path/to/script user@machineB:/home/user/path

Then, just run the script

This will work if you have given executable permission to the script.

A generic list of anonymous class

There are many ways to do this, but some of the responses here are creating a list that contains garbage elements, which requires you to clear the list.

If you are looking for an empty list of the generic type, use a Select against a List of Tuples to make the empty list. No elements will be instantiated.

Here's the one-liner to create an empty list:

 var emptyList = new List<Tuple<int, string>>()
          .Select(t => new { Id = t.Item1, Name = t.Item2 }).ToList();

Then you can add to it using your generic type:

 emptyList.Add(new { Id = 1, Name = "foo" });
 emptyList.Add(new { Id = 2, Name = "bar" });

As an alternative, you can do something like below to create the empty list (But, I prefer the first example because you can use it for a populated collection of Tuples as well) :

 var emptyList = new List<object>()
          .Select(t => new { Id = default(int), Name = default(string) }).ToList();

CUDA incompatible with my gcc version

In $CUDA_HOME/include/host_config.h, find lines like these (may slightly vary between different CUDA version):

//...
#if __GNUC__ > 4 || (__GNUC__ == 4 && __GNUC_MINOR__ > 9)

#error -- unsupported GNU version! gcc versions later than 4.9 are not supported!

#endif [> __GNUC__ > 4 || (__GNUC__ == 4 && __GNUC_MINOR__ > 9) <]
//...

Remove or change them matching your condition.

Note this method is potentially unsafe and may break your build. For example, gcc 5 uses C++11 as default, however this is not the case for nvcc as of CUDA 7.5. A workaround is to add

--Xcompiler="--std=c++98" for CUDA<=6.5

or

--std=c++11 for CUDA>=7.0.

Calling filter returns <filter object at ... >

It's an iterator returned by the filter function.

If you want a list, just do

list(filter(f, range(2, 25)))

Nonetheless, you can just iterate over this object with a for loop.

for e in filter(f, range(2, 25)):
    do_stuff(e)

design a stack such that getMinimum( ) should be O(1)

You could extend your original stack class and just add the min tracking to it. Let the original parent class handle everything else as usual.

    public StackWithMin() {
        min = new Stack<>();
    }

    public void push(int num) {
        if (super.isEmpty()) {
            min.push(num);
        } else if (num <= min.peek()) {
            min.push(num);
        }
        super.push(num);
    }

    public int min() {
        return min.peek();
    }

    public Integer pop() {
        if (super.peek() == min.peek()) {
            min.pop();
        }
        return super.pop();
    }
}

Can't Load URL: The domain of this URL isn't included in the app's domains

I had the same problem, and it came from a wrong client_id / Facebook App ID.

Did you switch your Facebook app to "public" or "online ? When you do so, Facebook creates a new app with a new App ID.

You can compare the "client_id" parameter value in the url with the one in your Facebook dashboard.

Also Make sure your app is public. Click on + Add product Now go to products => Facebook Login Now do the following:

Abstract class in Java

From oracle documentation

Abstract Methods and Classes:

An abstract class is a class that is declared abstract—it may or may not include abstract methods

Abstract classes cannot be instantiated, but they can be subclassed

An abstract method is a method that is declared without an implementation (without braces, and followed by a semicolon), like this:

abstract void moveTo(double deltaX, double deltaY);

If a class includes abstract methods, then the class itself must be declared abstract, as in:

public abstract class GraphicObject {
   // declare fields
   // declare nonabstract methods
   abstract void draw();
}

When an abstract class is subclassed, the subclass usually provides implementations for all of the abstract methods in its parent class. However, if it does not, then the subclass must also be declared abstract.

Since abstract classes and interfaces are related, have a look at below SE questions:

What is the difference between an interface and abstract class?

How should I have explained the difference between an Interface and an Abstract class?

T-SQL: Deleting all duplicate rows but keeping one

You didn't say what version you were using, but in SQL 2005 and above, you can use a common table expression with the OVER Clause. It goes a little something like this:

WITH cte AS (
  SELECT[foo], [bar],
     row_number() OVER(PARTITION BY foo, bar ORDER BY baz) AS [rn]
  FROM TABLE
)
DELETE cte WHERE [rn] > 1

Play around with it and see what you get.

(Edit: In an attempt to be helpful, someone edited the ORDER BY clause within the CTE. To be clear, you can order by anything you want here, it needn't be one of the columns returned by the cte. In fact, a common use-case here is that "foo, bar" are the group identifier and "baz" is some sort of time stamp. In order to keep the latest, you'd do ORDER BY baz desc)

jQuery UI Dialog - missing close icon

This is a comment on the top answer, but I felt it was worth its own answer because it helped me answer the problem.

If you want to keep Bootstrap declared after JQuery UI (I did because I wanted to use the Bootstrap tooltip), declaring the following (I declared it after $(document).ready) will allow the button to appear again (answer from https://stackoverflow.com/a/23428433/4660870)

var bootstrapButton = $.fn.button.noConflict() // return $.fn.button to previously assigned value
$.fn.bootstrapBtn = bootstrapButton            // give $().bootstrapBtn the Bootstrap functionality

path.join vs path.resolve with __dirname

Yes there is a difference between the functions but the way you are using them in this case will result in the same outcome.

path.join returns a normalized path by merging two paths together. It can return an absolute path, but it doesn't necessarily always do so.

For instance:

path.join('app/libs/oauth', '/../ssl')

resolves to app/libs/ssl

path.resolve, on the other hand, will resolve to an absolute path.

For instance, when you run:

path.resolve('bar', '/foo');

The path returned will be /foo since that is the first absolute path that can be constructed.

However, if you run:

path.resolve('/bar/bae', '/foo', 'test');

The path returned will be /foo/test again because that is the first absolute path that can be formed from right to left.

If you don't provide a path that specifies the root directory then the paths given to the resolve function are appended to the current working directory. So if your working directory was /home/mark/project/:

path.resolve('test', 'directory', '../back');

resolves to

/home/mark/project/test/back

Using __dirname is the absolute path to the directory containing the source file. When you use path.resolve or path.join they will return the same result if you give the same path following __dirname. In such cases it's really just a matter of preference.

jQuery - select the associated label element of a input field

You shouldn't rely on the order of elements by using prev or next. Just use the for attribute of the label, as it should correspond to the ID of the element you're currently manipulating:

var label = $("label[for='" + $(this).attr('id') + "']");

However, there are some cases where the label will not have for set, in which case the label will be the parent of its associated control. To find it in both cases, you can use a variation of the following:

var label = $('label[for="' + $(this).attr('id') + '"]');

if(label.length <= 0) {
    var parentElem = $(this).parent(),
        parentTagName = parentElem.get(0).tagName.toLowerCase();

    if(parentTagName == "label") {
        label = parentElem;
    }
}

I hope this helps!

How do I trigger a macro to run after a new mail is received in Outlook?

This code will add an event listener to the default local Inbox, then take some action on incoming emails. You need to add that action in the code below.

Private WithEvents Items As Outlook.Items
Private Sub Application_Startup()

  Dim objNS As Outlook.NameSpace
  Set olApp = Outlook.Application
  Set objNS = olApp.GetNamespace("MAPI")
  ' default local Inbox
  Set Items = objNS.GetDefaultFolder(olFolderInbox).Items
End Sub
Private Sub Items_ItemAdd(ByVal item As Object)

    ' ******************
  End If

  Exit Sub
ErrorHandler:
  MsgBox Err.Number & " - " & Err.Description
  Resume ProgramExit
End Sub

After pasting the code in ThisOutlookSession module, you must restart Outlook.

Check if an element is present in an array

Since ECMAScript6, one can use Set :

var myArray = ['A', 'B', 'C'];
var mySet = new Set(myArray);
var hasB = mySet.has('B'); // true
var hasZ = mySet.has('Z'); // false

Html.Textbox VS Html.TextboxFor

IMO the main difference is that Textbox is not strongly typed. TextboxFor take a lambda as a parameter that tell the helper the with element of the model to use in a typed view.

You can do the same things with both, but you should use typed views and TextboxFor when possible.

Parallel.ForEach will optimize(may not even start new threads) and block until the loop is finished, and Task.Factory will explicitly create a new task instance for each item, and return before they are finished (asynchronous tasks). Parallel.Foreach is much more efficient.

What does ECU units, CPU core and memory mean when I launch a instance

ECU = EC2 Compute Unit. More from here: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/faqs/#What_is_an_EC2_Compute_Unit_and_why_did_you_introduce_it

Amazon EC2 uses a variety of measures to provide each instance with a consistent and predictable amount of CPU capacity. In order to make it easy for developers to compare CPU capacity between different instance types, we have defined an Amazon EC2 Compute Unit. The amount of CPU that is allocated to a particular instance is expressed in terms of these EC2 Compute Units. We use several benchmarks and tests to manage the consistency and predictability of the performance from an EC2 Compute Unit. One EC2 Compute Unit provides the equivalent CPU capacity of a 1.0-1.2 GHz 2007 Opteron or 2007 Xeon processor. This is also the equivalent to an early-2006 1.7 GHz Xeon processor referenced in our original documentation. Over time, we may add or substitute measures that go into the definition of an EC2 Compute Unit, if we find metrics that will give you a clearer picture of compute capacity.

What's the safest way to iterate through the keys of a Perl hash?

I usually use keys and I can't think of the last time I used or read a use of each.

Don't forget about map, depending on what you're doing in the loop!

map { print "$_ => $hash{$_}\n" } keys %hash;

How To Remove Outline Border From Input Button

Removing nessorry accessible event not a good idea in up to standard web developments. either way if you looking for a solution removing just the outline doesn't solve the problem. you also have to remove the blue color shadow. for specific scenarios use a separate class name to isolate the this special style to your button.

.btn.focus, .btn:focus {
    outline: 0;
    box-shadow: 0 0 0 0.2rem rgba(0, 123, 255, .25);
}

Better do this

.remove-border.focus, .remove-border:focus {
        outline: 0;
        box-shadow: 0 0 0 0.2rem rgba(0, 123, 255, .25);
 }

How to delete directory content in Java?

You have to do this for each File:

public static void deleteFolder(File folder) {
    File[] files = folder.listFiles();
    if(files!=null) { //some JVMs return null for empty dirs
        for(File f: files) {
            if(f.isDirectory()) {
                deleteFolder(f);
            } else {
                f.delete();
            }
        }
    }
    folder.delete();
}

Then call

deleteFolder(outputFolder);

Why is pydot unable to find GraphViz's executables in Windows 8?

Here is what I did for the above mentioned problem. I'm using windows 10 os and python 3.6.5

  1. Install PIP by clicking here

  2. open command prompt and type command "pip install graphviz"

  3. go to my computer(this pc) and search with the keyword "graphviz"

  4. open the graphviz folder and copy its path and save it in notepad

  5. In graphviz look for the bin folder and copy the folder by right click of your mouse

  6. now again head back to my computer and search for "pydotplus"

  7. a folder named pydotplus is displayed. Open it and paste the copy of bin folder (of Graphviz) that you copied earlier

  8. head to control panel>system and security> system settings> advanced settings> environmental variables> add new path

  9. add the path that you copied in notepad and click a series of "ok"

that's it now you can enjoy using graphviz

Why doesn't CSS ellipsis work in table cell?

Just offering an alternative as I had this problem and none of the other answers here had the desired effect I wanted. So instead I used a list. Now semantically the information I was outputting could have been regarded as both tabular data but also listed data.

So in the end what I did was:

<ul>
    <li class="group">
        <span class="title">...</span>
        <span class="description">...</span>
        <span class="mp3-player">...</span>
        <span class="download">...</span>
        <span class="shortlist">...</span>
    </li>
    <!-- looped <li> -->
</ul>

So basically ul is table, li is tr, and span is td.

Then in CSS I set the span elements to be display:block; and float:left; (I prefer that combination to inline-block as it'll work in older versions of IE, to clear the float effect see: http://css-tricks.com/snippets/css/clear-fix/) and to also have the ellipses:

span {
    display: block;
    float: left;
    width: 100%;

    // truncate when long
    overflow: hidden;
    text-overflow: ellipsis;
    white-space: nowrap;
}

Then all you do is set the max-widths of your spans and that'll give the list an appearance of a table.

What is the use of System.in.read()?

Two and a half years late is better than never, right?

int System.in.read() reads the next byte of data from the input stream. But I am sure you already knew that, because it is trivial to look up. So, what you are probably asking is:

  • Why is it declared to return an int when the documentation says that it reads a byte?

  • and why does it appear to return garbage? (I type '9', but it returns 57.)

It returns an int because besides all the possible values of a byte, it also needs to be able to return an extra value to indicate end-of-stream. So, it has to return a type which can express more values than a byte can.

Note: They could have made it a short, but they opted for int instead, possibly as a tip of the hat of historical significance to C, whose getc() function also returns an int, but more importantly because short is a bit cumbersome to work with, (the language offers no means of specifying a short literal, so you have to specify an int literal and cast it to short,) plus on certain architectures int has better performance than short.

It appears to return garbage because when you view a character as an integer, what you are looking at is the ASCII(*) value of that character. So, a '9' appears as a 57. But if you cast it to a character, you get '9', so all is well.

Think of it this way: if you typed the character '9' it is nonsensical to expect System.in.read() to return the number 9, because then what number would you expect it to return if you had typed an 'a'? Obviously, characters must be mapped to numbers. ASCII(*) is a system of mapping characters to numbers. And in this system, character '9' maps to number 57, not number 9.

(*) Not necessarily ASCII; it may be some other encoding, like UTF-16; but in the vast majority of encodings, and certainly in all popular encodings, the first 127 values are the same as ASCII. And this includes all english alphanumeric characters and popular symbols.

Passing event and argument to v-on in Vue.js

You can also do something like this...

<input @input="myHandler('foo', 'bar', ...arguments)">

Evan You himself recommended this technique in one post on Vue forum. In general some events may emit more than one argument. Also as documentation states internal variable $event is meant for passing original DOM event.

Access restriction on class due to restriction on required library rt.jar?

Sorry for updating an old POST. I got the reported problem and I solved it as said below.

Assuming you are using Eclipse + m2e maven plugin, if you get this access restriction error, right click on the project/module in which you have the error --> Properties --> Build Path --> Library --> Replace JDK/JRE to the one that is used in eclipse workspace.

I followed the above steps and the issue is resolved.

Test if a string contains a word in PHP?

Use strpos. If the string is not found it returns false, otherwise something that is not false. Be sure to use a type-safe comparison (===) as 0 may be returned and it is a falsy value:

if (strpos($string, $substring) === false) {
    // substring is not found in string
}

if (strpos($string, $substring2) !== false) {
    // substring2 is found in string
}

SimpleDateFormat parse loses timezone

All I needed was this :

SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy.MM.dd HH:mm:ss");
sdf.setTimeZone(TimeZone.getTimeZone("GMT"));

SimpleDateFormat sdfLocal = new SimpleDateFormat("yyyy.MM.dd HH:mm:ss");

try {
    String d = sdf.format(new Date());
    System.out.println(d);
    System.out.println(sdfLocal.parse(d));
} catch (Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace(); //To change body of catch statement use File | Settings | File Templates.
}

Output : slightly dubious, but I want only the date to be consistent

Using {% url ??? %} in django templates

Instead of importing the logout_view function, you should provide a string in your urls.py file:

So not (r'^login/', login_view),

but (r'^login/', 'login.views.login_view'),

That is the standard way of doing things. Then you can access the URL in your templates using:

{% url login.views.login_view %}

How to create a directory in Java?

This function allows you to create a directory on the user home directory.

private static void createDirectory(final String directoryName) {
    final File homeDirectory = new File(System.getProperty("user.home"));

    if(!newDirectory.exists()) {
        boolean result = newDirectory.mkdir();

        if(result) {
            System.out.println("The directory is created !");
        }
    } else {
        System.out.println("The directory already exist");
    }
}

Why use pip over easy_install?

Another—as of yet unmentioned—reason for favoring pip is because it is the new hotness and will continue to be used in the future.

The infographic below—from the Current State of Packaging section in the The Hitchhiker's Guide to Packaging v1.0—shows that setuptools/easy_install will go away in the future.

enter image description here

Here's another infographic from distribute's documentation showing that Setuptools and easy_install will be replaced by the new hotness—distribute and pip. While pip is still the new hotness, Distribute merged with Setuptools in 2013 with the release of Setuptools v0.7.

In which conda environment is Jupyter executing?

Adding to the above answers, you can also use

!which python

Type this in a cell and this will show the path of the environment. I'm not sure of the reason, but in my installation, there is no segregation of environments in the notebook, but on activating the environment and launching jupyter notebook, the path used is the python installed in the environment.

Showing loading animation in center of page while making a call to Action method in ASP .NET MVC

Another solution that it is similar to those already exposed here is this one. Just before the closing body tag place this html:

<div id="resultLoading" style="display: none; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: fixed; z-index: 10000; top: 0px; left: 0px; right: 0px; bottom: 0px; margin: auto;">
    <div style="width: 340px; height: 200px; text-align: center; position: fixed; top: 0px; left: 0px; right: 0px; bottom: 0px; margin: auto; z-index: 10; color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">
        <div class="uil-default-css">
            <img src="/images/loading-animation1.gif" style="max-width: 150px; max-height: 150px; display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" />
        </div>
        <div class="loader-text" style="display: block; font-size: 18px; font-weight: 300;">&nbsp;</div>
    </div>
    <div style="background: rgb(0, 0, 0); opacity: 0.6; width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute; top: 0px;"></div>
</div>

Finally, replace .loader-text element's content on the fly on every navigation event and turn on the #resultloading div, note that it is initially hidden.

var showLoader = function (text) {
    $('#resultLoading').show();
    $('#resultLoading').find('.loader-text').html(text);
};

jQuery(document).ready(function () {
    jQuery(window).on("beforeunload ", function () {
        showLoader('Loading, please wait...');
    });
});

This can be applied to any html based project with jQuery where you don't know which pages of your administration area will take too long to finish loading.

The gif image is 176x176px but you can use any transparent gif animation, please take into account that the image size is not important as it will be maxed to 150x150px.

Also, the function showLoader can be called on an element's click to perform an action that will further redirect the page, that is why it is provided ad an individual function. i hope this can also help anyone.

How to use wget in php?

If the aim is to just load the contents inside your application, you don't even need to use wget:

$xmlData = file_get_contents('http://user:[email protected]/file.xml');

Note that this function will not work if allow_url_fopen is disabled (it's enabled by default) inside either php.ini or the web server configuration (e.g. httpd.conf).

If your host explicitly disables it or if you're writing a library, it's advisable to either use cURL or a library that abstracts the functionality, such as Guzzle.

use GuzzleHttp\Client;

$client = new Client([
  'base_url' => 'http://example.com',
  'defaults' => [
    'auth'    => ['user', 'pass'],
]]);

$xmlData = $client->get('/file.xml');

add new element in laravel collection object

It looks like you have everything correct according to Laravel docs, but you have a typo

$item->push($product);

Should be

$items->push($product);

I also want to think the actual method you're looking for is put

$items->put('products', $product);

Global variables in R

As Christian's answer with assign() shows, there is a way to assign in the global environment. A simpler, shorter (but not better ... stick with assign) way is to use the <<- operator, ie

    a <<- "new"

inside the function.

How to delete all instances of a character in a string in python?

>>> x = 'it is icy'.replace('i', '', 1)
>>> x
't is icy'

Since your code would only replace the first instance, I assumed that's what you wanted. If you want to replace them all, leave off the 1 argument.

Since you cannot replace the character in the string itself, you have to reassign it back to the variable. (Essentially, you have to update the reference instead of modifying the string.)
