How to align title at center of ActionBar in default theme(Theme.Holo.Light)

This actually works:

 getActionBar().setDisplayOptions(ActionBar.DISPLAY_SHOW_CUSTOM);
 getActionBar().setCustomView(R.layout.custom_actionbar);
  ActionBar.LayoutParams p = new ActionBar.LayoutParams(ViewGroup.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT, ViewGroup.LayoutParams.MATCH_PARENT);
        p.gravity = Gravity.CENTER;

You have to define custom_actionbar.xml layout which is as per your requirement e.g. :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    android:layout_width="match_parent"
    android:layout_height="50dp"
    android:background="#2e2e2e"
    android:orientation="vertical"
    android:gravity="center"
    android:layout_gravity="center">

    <ImageView
        android:id="@+id/imageView1"
        android:layout_width="wrap_content"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:src="@drawable/top_banner"
        android:layout_gravity="center"
        />
</LinearLayout>

auto run a bat script in windows 7 at login

To run the batch file when the VM user logs in:

Drag the shortcut--the one that's currently on your desktop--(or the batch file itself) to Start - All Programs - Startup. Now when you login as that user, it will launch the batch file.

Another way to do the same thing is to save the shortcut or the batch file in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\.

As far as getting it to run full screen, it depends a bit what you mean. You can have it launch maximized by editing your batch file like this:

start "" /max "C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\VirtualBox.exe" --comment "VM" --startvm "12dada4d-9cfd-4aa7-8353-20b4e455b3fa"

But if VirtualBox has a truly full-screen mode (where it hides even the taskbar), you'll have to look for a command-line parameter on VirtualBox.exe. I'm not familiar with that product.

Regex using javascript to return just numbers

If you want only digits:

var value = '675-805-714';
var numberPattern = /\d+/g;
value = value.match( numberPattern ).join([]);
alert(value);
//Show: 675805714

Now you get the digits joined

How to use a client certificate to authenticate and authorize in a Web API

I actually had a similar issue, where we had to many trusted root certificates. Our fresh installed webserver had over a hunded. Our root started with the letter Z so it ended up at the end of the list.

The problem was that the IIS sent only the first twenty-something trusted roots to the client and truncated the rest, including ours. It was a few years ago, can't remember the name of the tool... it was part of the IIS admin suite, but Fiddler should do as well. After realizing the error, we removed a lot trusted roots that we don't need. This was done trial and error, so be careful what you delete.

After the cleanup everything worked like a charm.

How to fix symbol lookup error: undefined symbol errors in a cluster environment

After two dozens of comments to understand the situation, it was found that the libhdf5.so.7 was actually a symlink (with several levels of indirection) to a file that was not shared between the queued processes and the interactive processes. This means even though the symlink itself lies on a shared filesystem, the contents of the file do not and as a result the process was seeing different versions of the library.

For future reference: other than checking LD_LIBRARY_PATH, it's always a good idea to check a library with nm -D to see if the symbols actually exist. In this case it was found that they do exist in interactive mode but not when run in the queue. A quick md5sum revealed that the files were actually different.

How do I execute a PowerShell script automatically using Windows task scheduler?

  1. Open the created task scheduler

  2. switch to the “Action” tab and select your created “Action”

  3. In the Edit section, using the browser you could select powershell.exe in your system32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0 folder.

       Example -C:\Windows\System32\WindowsPowerShell\v1.0\powershell.exe

  4. Next, in the ‘Add arguments’ -File parameter, paste your script file path in your system.

        Example – c:\GetMFAStatus.ps1

How to set up subdomains on IIS 7

As DotNetMensch said but you DO NOT need to add another site in IIS as this can also cause further problems and make things more complicated because you then have a website within a website so the file paths, masterpage paths and web.config paths may need changing. You just need to edit teh bindings of the existing site and add the new subdomain there.

So:

  1. Add sub-domain to DNS records. My host (RackSpace) uses a web portal to do this so you just log in and go to Network->Domains(DNS)->Actions->Create Zone, and enter your subdomain as mysubdomain.domain.com etc, leave the other settings as default

  2. Go to your domain in IIS, right-click->Edit Bindings->Add, and add your new subdomain leaving everything else the same e.g. mysubdomain.domain.com

You may need to wait 5-10 mins for the DNS records to update but that's all you need.

How to use pip with Python 3.x alongside Python 2.x

The approach you should take is to install pip for Python 3.2.

You do this in the following way:

$ curl -O https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py
$ sudo python3.2 get-pip.py

Then, you can install things for Python 3.2 with pip-3.2, and install things for Python 2-7 with pip-2.7. The pip command will end up pointing to one of these, but I'm not sure which, so you will have to check.

How do I force files to open in the browser instead of downloading (PDF)?

If you are using HTML5 (and I guess nowadays everyone uses that), there is an attribute called download.

For example,

<a href="somepathto.pdf" download="filename">

Here filename is optional, but if provided, it will take this name for the downloaded file.

Capturing a single image from my webcam in Java or Python

Some time ago I wrote simple Webcam Capture API which can be used for that. The project is available on Github.

Example code:

Webcam webcam = Webcam.getDefault();
webcam.open();
try {
  ImageIO.write(webcam.getImage(), "PNG", new File("test.png"));
} catch (IOException e) {
  e.printStackTrace();
} finally {
  webcam.close();
}

How to undo a successful "git cherry-pick"?

A cherry-pick is basically a commit, so if you want to undo it, you just undo the commit.

when I have other local changes

Stash your current changes so you can reapply them after resetting the commit.

$ git stash
$ git reset --hard HEAD^
$ git stash pop # or `git stash apply`, if you want to keep the changeset in the stash

when I have no other local changes

$ git reset --hard HEAD^

What is /var/www/html?

/var/www/html is just the default root folder of the web server. You can change that to be whatever folder you want by editing your apache.conf file (usually located in /etc/apache/conf) and changing the DocumentRoot attribute (see http://httpd.apache.org/docs/current/mod/core.html#documentroot for info on that)

Many hosts don't let you change these things yourself, so your mileage may vary. Some let you change them, but only with the built in admin tools (cPanel, for example) instead of via a command line or editing the raw config files.

How to sort an array of ints using a custom comparator?

Here is some code (it's actually not Timsort as I originally thought, but it does work well) that does the trick without any boxing/unboxing. In my tests, it works 3-4 times faster than using Collections.sort with a List wrapper around the array.

// This code has been contributed by 29AjayKumar
// from: https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/sort/

static final int sortIntArrayWithComparator_RUN = 32;

// this function sorts array from left index to
// to right index which is of size atmost RUN
static void sortIntArrayWithComparator_insertionSort(int[] arr, IntComparator comparator, int left, int right) {
    for (int i = left + 1; i <= right; i++)
    {
        int temp = arr[i];
        int j = i - 1;
        while (j >= left && comparator.compare(arr[j], temp) > 0)
        {
            arr[j + 1] = arr[j];
            j--;
        }
        arr[j + 1] = temp;
    }
}

// merge function merges the sorted runs
static void sortIntArrayWithComparator_merge(int[] arr, IntComparator comparator, int l, int m, int r) {
    // original array is broken in two parts
    // left and right array
    int len1 = m - l + 1, len2 = r - m;
    int[] left = new int[len1];
    int[] right = new int[len2];
    for (int x = 0; x < len1; x++)
    {
        left[x] = arr[l + x];
    }
    for (int x = 0; x < len2; x++)
    {
        right[x] = arr[m + 1 + x];
    }

    int i = 0;
    int j = 0;
    int k = l;

    // after comparing, we merge those two array
    // in larger sub array
    while (i < len1 && j < len2)
    {
        if (comparator.compare(left[i], right[j]) <= 0)
        {
            arr[k] = left[i];
            i++;

        else

Change the background color in a twitter bootstrap modal?

It gets a little bit more complicated if you want to add the background to a specific modal. One way of solving that is to add and call something like this function instead of showing the modal directly:

function showModal(selector) {
    $(selector).modal('show');
    $('.modal-backdrop').addClass('background-backdrop');
}

Any css can then be applied to the background-backdrop class.

Can I use a binary literal in C or C++?

A few compilers (usually the ones for microcontrollers) has a special feature implemented within recognizing literal binary numbers by prefix "0b..." preceding the number, although most compilers (C/C++ standards) don't have such feature and if it is the case, here it is my alternative solution:

#define B_0000    0
#define B_0001    1
#define B_0010    2
#define B_0011    3
#define B_0100    4
#define B_0101    5
#define B_0110    6
#define B_0111    7
#define B_1000    8
#define B_1001    9
#define B_1010    a
#define B_1011    b
#define B_1100    c
#define B_1101    d
#define B_1110    e
#define B_1111    f

#define _B2H(bits)    B_##bits
#define B2H(bits)    _B2H(bits)
#define _HEX(n)        0x##n
#define HEX(n)        _HEX(n)
#define _CCAT(a,b)    a##b
#define CCAT(a,b)   _CCAT(a,b)

#define BYTE(a,b)        HEX( CCAT(B2H(a),B2H(b)) )
#define WORD(a,b,c,d)    HEX( CCAT(CCAT(B2H(a),B2H(b)),CCAT(B2H(c),B2H(d))) )
#define DWORD(a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h)    HEX( CCAT(CCAT(CCAT(B2H(a),B2H(b)),CCAT(B2H(c),B2H(d))),CCAT(CCAT(B2H(e),B2H(f)),CCAT(B2H(g),B2H(h)))) )

// Using example
char b = BYTE(0100,0001); // Equivalent to b = 65; or b = 'A'; or b = 0x41;
unsigned int w = WORD(1101,1111,0100,0011); // Equivalent to w = 57155; or w = 0xdf43;
unsigned long int dw = DWORD(1101,1111,0100,0011,1111,1101,0010,1000); //Equivalent to dw = 3745774888; or dw = 0xdf43fd28;

Disadvantages (it's not such a big ones):

  • The binary numbers have to be grouped 4 by 4;
  • The binary literals have to be only unsigned integer numbers;

Advantages:

  • Total preprocessor driven, not spending processor time in pointless operations (like "?.. :..", "<<", "+") to the executable program (it may be performed hundred of times in the final application);
  • It works "mainly in C" compilers and C++ as well (template+enum solution works only in C++ compilers);
  • It has only the limitation of "longness" for expressing "literal constant" values. There would have been earlyish longness limitation (usually 8 bits: 0-255) if one had expressed constant values by parsing resolve of "enum solution" (usually 255 = reach enum definition limit), differently, "literal constant" limitations, in the compiler allows greater numbers;
  • Some other solutions demand exaggerated number of constant definitions (too many defines in my opinion) including long or several header files (in most cases not easily readable and understandable, and make the project become unnecessarily confused and extended, like that using "BOOST_BINARY()");
  • Simplicity of the solution: easily readable, understandable and adjustable for other cases (could be extended for grouping 8 by 8 too);

How can I create an Asynchronous function in Javascript?

You cannot make a truly custom asynchronous function. You'll eventually have to leverage on a technology provided natively, such as:

  • setInterval
  • setTimeout
  • requestAnimationFrame
  • XMLHttpRequest
  • WebSocket
  • Worker
  • Some HTML5 APIs such as the File API, Web Database API
  • Technologies that support onload
  • ... many others

In fact, for the animation jQuery uses setInterval.

Note that path.exists can fail for more reasons than just the file is not there so you might have to do finer tests like testing if the containing directory exists and so on.

After my discussion with the OP it turned out, that the main problem seems to be, that the file name might contain characters that are not allowed by the filesystem. Of course they need to be removed but the OP wants to maintain as much human readablitiy as the filesystem allows.

Sadly I do not know of any good solution for this. However Cecil Curry's answer takes a closer look at detecting the problem.

The page has 2 tables and has 6 columns each with unique column names and 6 rows with variable data. The last row has the Modify button in both the tables.

Assuming that the user has to select the 4th Modify button from the first table based on the heading

Use the xpath //th[.='Heading 4']/ancestor::thead/following-sibling::tbody/tr/td[count(//tr/th[.='Heading 4']/preceding-sibling::th)+1]/button

The count() operator comes in handy in situations like these.

Logic:

  1. Find the header for the Modify button using //th[.='Heading 4']
  2. Find the index of the header column using count(//tr/th[.='Heading 4']/preceding-sibling::th)+1

Note: Index starts at 0

  1. Get the rows for the corresponding header using //th[.='Heading 4']/ancestor::thead/following-sibling::tbody/tr/td[count(//tr/th[.='Heading 4']/preceding-sibling::th)+1]

  2. Get the Modify button from the extracted node list using //th[.='Heading 4']/ancestor::thead/following-sibling::tbody/tr/td[count(//tr/th[.='Heading 4']/preceding-sibling::th)+1]/button

Characters allowed in GET parameter

"." | "!" | "~" | "*" | "'" | "(" | ")" are also acceptable [RFC2396]. Really, anything can be in a GET parameter if it is properly encoded.

S3 limit to objects in a bucket

It looks like the limit has changed. You can store 5TB for a single object.

The total volume of data and number of objects you can store are unlimited. Individual Amazon S3 objects can range in size from a minimum of 0 bytes to a maximum of 5 terabytes. The largest object that can be uploaded in a single PUT is 5 gigabytes. For objects larger than 100 megabytes, customers should consider using the Multipart Upload capability.

How to Change color of Button in Android when Clicked?

Try this......

First create an xml file named button_pressed.xml These are it's contents.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<selector
  xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <item android:state_focused="true"
          android:state_pressed="false"
          android:drawable="@drawable/icon_1" />
    <item android:state_focused="true"
          android:state_pressed="true"
          android:drawable="@drawable/icon_1_press" />
    <item android:state_focused="false"
          android:state_pressed="true"
            android:drawable="@drawable/icon_1_press" />
    <item android:drawable="@drawable/icon_1" />
</selector>

Noe try this on your button.

int imgID = getResources().getIdentifier("button_pressed", "drawable", getApplication().getPackageName());
button.setImageResource(imgID);

button_pressed.xml should be in the drawable folder. icon_1_press and icon_1 are two images for button press and normal focus.

MySQL: Get column name or alias from query

This is only an add-on to the accepted answer:

def get_results(db_cursor):
    desc = [d[0] for d in db_cursor.description]
    results = [dotdict(dict(zip(desc, res))) for res in db_cursor.fetchall()]
    return results

where dotdict is:

class dotdict(dict):
    __getattr__ = dict.get
    __setattr__ = dict.__setitem__
    __delattr__ = dict.__delitem__

This will allow you to access much easier the values by column names.
Suppose you have a user table with columns name and email:

cursor.execute('select * from users')
results = get_results(cursor)
for res in results:
  print(res.name, res.email)

Unable to start the mysql server in ubuntu

I think this is because you are using client software and not the server.

  • mysql is client
  • mysqld is the server

Try: sudo service mysqld start

To check that service is running use: ps -ef | grep mysql | grep -v grep.

Uninstalling:

sudo apt-get purge mysql-server
sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

Re-Installing:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install mysql-server

Backup entire folder before doing this:

sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades*
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Django URLs TypeError: view must be a callable or a list/tuple in the case of include()

Django 1.10 no longer allows you to specify views as a string (e.g. 'myapp.views.home') in your URL patterns.

The solution is to update your urls.py to include the view callable. This means that you have to import the view in your urls.py. If your URL patterns don't have names, then now is a good time to add one, because reversing with the dotted python path no longer works.

from django.conf.urls import include, url

from django.contrib.auth.views import login
from myapp.views import home, contact

urlpatterns = [
    url(r'^$', home, name='home'),
    url(r'^contact/$', contact, name='contact'),
    url(r'^login/$', login, name='login'),
]

If there are many views, then importing them individually can be inconvenient. An alternative is to import the views module from your app.

from django.conf.urls import include, url

from django.contrib.auth import views as auth_views
from myapp import views as myapp_views

urlpatterns = [
    url(r'^$', myapp_views.home, name='home'),
    url(r'^contact/$', myapp_views.contact, name='contact'),
    url(r'^login/$', auth_views.login, name='login'),
]

Note that we have used as myapp_views and as auth_views, which allows us to import the views.py from multiple apps without them clashing.

See the Django URL dispatcher docs for more information about urlpatterns.

R apply function with multiple parameters

If your function have two vector variables and must compute itself on each value of them (as mentioned by @Ari B. Friedman) you can use mapply as follows:

vars1<-c(1,2,3)
vars2<-c(10,20,30)
mult_one<-function(var1,var2)
{
   var1*var2
}
mapply(mult_one,vars1,vars2)

which gives you:

// after many iterations and manipulations
sb.setLength(0);
// reuse sb

How do I check whether a checkbox is checked in jQuery?

Using jQuery > 1.6

<input type="checkbox" value="1" name="checkMeOut" id="checkMeOut" checked="checked" />

// traditional attr

$('#checkMeOut').prop('checked'); // true

Using the new property method:

if($('#checkMeOut').prop('checked')) {
    // something when checked
} else {
    // something else when not
}

How to upgrade glibc from version 2.13 to 2.15 on Debian?

In fact you cannot do it easily right now (at the time I am writing this message). I will try to explain why.

First of all, the glibc is no more, it has been subsumed by the eglibc project. And, the Debian distribution switched to eglibc some time ago (see here and there and even on the glibc source package page). So, you should consider installing the eglibc package through this kind of command:

apt-get install libc6-amd64 libc6-dev libc6-dbg

Replace amd64 by the kind of architecture you want (look at the package list here).

Unfortunately, the eglibc package version is only up to 2.13 in unstable and testing. Only the experimental is providing a 2.17 version of this library. So, if you really want to have it in 2.15 or more, you need to install the package from the experimental version (which is not recommended). Here are the steps to achieve as root:

  1. Add the following line to the file /etc/apt/sources.list:

    deb http://ftp.debian.org/debian experimental main

  2. Update your package database:

    apt-get update

  3. Install the eglibc package:

    apt-get -t experimental install libc6-amd64 libc6-dev libc6-dbg

  4. Pray...

Well, that's all folks.

Reasons for a 409/Conflict HTTP error when uploading a file to sharepoint using a .NET WebRequest?

Its because of wrong path provided. It may be that the url contains space and if the case url has to be properly constructed.

The correct url should be in the format with file name included like "http://server name/document library name/new file name"

So if report.xlsx is the file that has to be uploaded at "http://server name/Team/Dev Team" then path comes out to be is "http://server name/Team/Dev Team/report.xlsx". It contains space so it should be reconstructed as "http://server name/Team/Dev%20Team/report.xlsx" and should be used.

        myList.Reverse();
        myList.ForEach(Console.WriteLine);

generate random string for div id

I would suggest that you start with some sort of placeholder, you may have this already, but its somewhere to append the div.

<div id="placeholder"></div>

Now, the idea is to dynamically create a new div, with your random id:

var rndId = randomString(8);
var div = document.createElement('div');
div.id = rndId
div.innerHTML = "Whatever you want the content of your div to be";

this can be apended to your placeholder as follows:

document.getElementById('placeholder').appendChild(div);

You can then use that in your jwplayer code:

jwplayer(rndId).setup(...);

Live example: http://jsfiddle.net/pNYZp/

Sidenote: Im pretty sure id's must start with an alpha character (ie, no numbers) - you might want to change your implementation of randomstring to enforce this rule. (ref)

Detect Click into Iframe using JavaScript

Mohammed Radwan, Your solution is elegant. To detect iframe clicks in Firefox and IE, you can use a simple method with document.activeElement and a timer, however... I have searched all over the interwebs for a method to detect clicks on an iframe in Chrome and Safari. At the brink of giving up, I find your answer. Thank you, sir!

Some tips: I have found your solution to be more reliable when calling the init() function directly, rather than through attachOnloadEvent(). Of course to do that, you must call init() only after the iframe html. So it would look something like:

<script>
var isOverIFrame = false;
function processMouseOut() {
    isOverIFrame = false;
    top.focus();
}
function processMouseOver() { isOverIFrame = true; }
function processIFrameClick() {
    if(isOverIFrame) {
    //was clicked
    }
}

function init() {
    var element = document.getElementsByTagName("iframe");
    for (var i=0; i<element.length; i++) {
        element[i].onmouseover = processMouseOver;
        element[i].onmouseout = processMouseOut;
    }
    if (typeof window.attachEvent != 'undefined') {
        top.attachEvent('onblur', processIFrameClick);
    }
    else if (typeof window.addEventListener != 'undefined') {
        top.addEventListener('blur', processIFrameClick, false);
    }
}
</script>

<iframe src="http://google.com"></iframe>

<script>init();</script>

Way to read first few lines for pandas dataframe

I think you can use the nrows parameter. From the docs:

nrows : int, default None

    Number of rows of file to read. Useful for reading pieces of large files

which seems to work. Using one of the standard large test files (988504479 bytes, 5344499 lines):

What is the difference between tree depth and height?

Another way to understand those concept is as follow: Depth: Draw a horizontal line at the root position and treat this line as ground. So the depth of the root is 0, and all its children are grow downward so each level of nodes has the current depth + 1.

Height: Same horizontal line but this time the ground position is external nodes, which is the leaf of tree and count upward.

How should I copy Strings in Java?

String str1="this is a string";
String str2=str1.clone();

How about copy like this? I think to get a new copy is better, so that the data of str1 won't be affected when str2 is reference and modified in futher action.

ERROR in ./node_modules/css-loader?

I tried both

npm rebuild node-sass

and

npm install --save node-sass

Later by seeing EACCESS, i checked the folder permission of /node_modules, which was not 777 permission

Then I gave

chmod -R 777 *

-R for recursively(setting the same permission not in the dir but also inside nested sub dir) * is for all files in current directory

What is file permission

To check for permission you can use

ls -l

If u don't know about it, first see here, then check the url

Every file and directory has permission of 'rwx'(read, write, execute). and if 'x' permission is not there, then you can not execture, if no 'w', you can not write into the file. if some thing is missiing it will show in place of r/w/x with '-'. So, if 'x' permission is not there, it will show like 'rw-'

And there will be 3 category of user Owner(who created the file/directory), Group(some people who shares same permission and user previlege), Others(general public)

So 1st letter is 'd'(if it is a directory) or '-'(if it is not a directory), followed by rwx for owner, followed by for group, followed by other

drwxrwxrwx

For example, for 'node_modules'directory I want to give permission to owner all permission and for rest only read, then it will be

drwxr--r--

And about the number assume for 'r/w/x' it is 1 and for '-' it is 0, 777, first 7 is for owner, followed by group, followed by other

Let's assume the permission is rwxr-xrw-

Now 'rwx' is like '111' and it's equivalent decimal is 1*2^2+1*2^1+1*2^0=7

Now 'r-x' is like '101' and it's equivalent decimal is 1*2^2+0*2^1+1*2^0=5

Now 'rw-' is like '110' and it's equivalent decimal is 1*2^2+1*2^1+0*2^0=6

So, it will be 756

Convert base class to derived class

You can implement the conversion yourself, but I would not recommend that. Take a look at the Decorator Pattern if you want to do this in order to extend the functionality of an existing object.

How can I print variable and string on same line in Python?

use String formatting

print("If there was a birth every 7 seconds, there would be: {} births".format(births))
 # Will replace "{}" with births

if you doing a toy project use:

print('If there was a birth every 7 seconds, there would be:' births'births)

or

print('If there was a birth every 7 seconds, there would be: %d births' %(births))
# Will replace %d with births

How do I set a variable to the output of a command in Bash?

Here are two more ways:

Please keep in mind that space is very important in Bash. So, if you want your command to run, use as is without introducing any more spaces.

  1. The following assigns harshil to L and then prints it

    L=$"harshil"
    echo "$L"

  2. The following assigns the output of the command tr to L2. tr is being operated on another variable, L1.

    L2=$(echo "$L1" | tr [:upper:] [:lower:])

How to display an alert box from C# in ASP.NET?

If you don't have a Page.Redirect(), use this

works for me.

Hope this helps.

`React/RCTBridgeModule.h` file not found

QUICK FIX (not the best)

Change the import react-native header lines:

 #import <React/RCTBridgeModule.h>
 #import <React/RCTLog.h>

To:

 #import "RCTBridgeModule.h"
 #import "RCTLog.h"

Here is an example of changes I had to make for the library I was trying to use: Closes #46 - 'RCTBridgeModule.h' file not found.

What does <meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="IE=edge"> do?

I think this diagram from Microsoft explains all. In order to tell IE how to render the content, !DOCTYPE has to work with X-UA-Compatible meta tag. !DOCTYPE by itself has no affect on changing IE Document Mode.

CAST to DECIMAL in MySQL

MySQL casts to Decimal:

Cast bare integer to decimal:

select cast(9 as decimal(4,2));       //prints 9.00

Cast Integers 8/5 to decimal:

select cast(8/5 as decimal(11,4));    //prints 1.6000

Cast string to decimal:

select cast(".885" as decimal(11,3));   //prints 0.885

Cast two int variables into a decimal

mysql> select 5 into @myvar1;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)

mysql> select 8 into @myvar2;
Query OK, 1 row affected (0.00 sec)

mysql> select @myvar1/@myvar2;   //prints 0.6250

Cast decimal back to string:

select cast(1.552 as char(10));   //shows "1.552"

Linq code to select one item

That can better be condensed down to this.

var item = Items.First(x => x.Id == 123);

Your query is currently collecting all results (and there may be more than one) within the enumerable and then taking the first one from that set, doing more work than necessary.

Single/SingleOrDefault are worthwhile, but only if you want to iterate through the entire collection and verify that the match is unique in addition to selecting that match. First/FirstOrDefault will just take the first match and leave, regardless of how many duplicates actually exist.

HTTP POST using JSON in Java

For Java 11 you can use new HTTP client:

 HttpClient client = HttpClient.newHttpClient();
    HttpRequest request = HttpRequest.newBuilder()
        .uri(URI.create("http://localhost/api"))
        .header("Content-Type", "application/json")
        .POST(ofInputStream(() -> getClass().getResourceAsStream(
            "/some-data.json")))
        .build();

    client.sendAsync(request, BodyHandlers.ofString())
        .thenApply(HttpResponse::body)
        .thenAccept(System.out::println)
        .join();

You can use publisher from InputStream, String, File. Converting JSON to the String or IS you can with Jackson.

Get Table and Index storage size in sql server

This query here will list the total size that a table takes up - clustered index, heap and all nonclustered indices:

SELECT
    s.Name AS SchemaName,
    t.NAME AS TableName,
    p.rows AS RowCounts,
    SUM(a.total_pages) * 8 AS TotalSpaceKB,
    SUM(a.used_pages) * 8 AS UsedSpaceKB,
    (SUM(a.total_pages) - SUM(a.used_pages)) * 8 AS UnusedSpaceKB
FROM
    sys.tables t
INNER JOIN
    sys.schemas s ON s.schema_id = t.schema_id
INNER JOIN
    sys.indexes i ON t.OBJECT_ID = i.object_id
INNER JOIN
    sys.partitions p ON i.object_id = p.OBJECT_ID AND i.index_id = p.index_id
INNER JOIN
    sys.allocation_units a ON p.partition_id = a.container_id
WHERE
    t.NAME NOT LIKE 'dt%' -- filter out system tables for diagramming
    AND t.is_ms_shipped = 0
    AND i.OBJECT_ID > 255
GROUP BY
    t.Name, s.Name, p.Rows
ORDER BY
    s.Name, t.Name

If you want to separate table space from index space, you need to use AND i.index_id IN (0,1) for the table space (index_id = 0 is the heap space, index_id = 1 is the size of the clustered index = data pages) and AND i.index_id > 1 for the index-only space

Reading rather large json files in Python

The issue here is that JSON, as a format, is generally parsed in full and then handled in-memory, which for such a large amount of data is clearly problematic.

The solution to this is to work with the data as a stream - reading part of the file, working with it, and then repeating.

The best option appears to be using something like ijson - a module that will work with JSON as a stream, rather than as a block file.

Edit: Also worth a look - kashif's comment about json-streamer and Henrik Heino's comment about bigjson.

PHP and MySQL Select a Single Value

The mysql_* functions are deprecated and unsafe. The code in your question in vulnerable to injection attacks. It is highly recommended that you use the PDO extension instead, like so:

session_start();

$query = "SELECT 'id' FROM Users WHERE username = :name LIMIT 1";
$statement = $PDO->prepare($query);
$params = array(
    'name' => $_GET["username"]
);
$statement->execute($params);
$user_data = $statement->fetch();

$_SESSION['myid'] = $user_data['id'];

Where $PDO is your PDO object variable. See https://www.php.net/pdo_mysql for more information about PHP and PDO.

For extra help:

Here's a jumpstart on how to connect to your database using PDO:

$database_username = "YOUR_USERNAME";
$database_password = "YOUR_PASSWORD";
$database_info = "mysql:host=localhost;dbname=YOUR_DATABASE_NAME";
try
{
    $PDO = new PDO($database_info, $database_username, $database_password);
}
catch(PDOException $e)
{
    // Handle error here
}

How do I update a model value in JavaScript in a Razor view?

The model (@Model) only exists while the page is being constructed. Once the page is rendered in the browser, all that exists is HTML, JavaScript and CSS.

What you will want to do is put the PostID in a hidden field. As the PostID value is fixed, there actually is no need for JavaScript. A simple @HtmlHiddenFor will suffice.

However, you will want to change your foreach loop to a for loop. The final solution will look something like this:

for (int i = 0 ; i < Model.Post; i++)
{
    <br/>
    <b>Posted by :</b> @Model.Post[i].Username <br/>
    <span>@Model.Post[i].Content</span> <br/>
    if(Model.loginuser == Model.username)
    {
        @Html.HiddenFor(model => model.Post[i].PostID)
        @Html.TextAreaFor(model => model.addcomment.Content)
        <button type="submit">Add Comment</button>
    }
}

How to Avoid Response.End() "Thread was being aborted" Exception during the Excel file download

This is not issue but this is by design. The root cause is described in Microsoft Support Page.

The Response.End method ends the page execution and shifts the execution to the Application_EndRequest event in the application's event pipeline. The line of code that follows Response.End is not executed.

The provided Solution is:

For Response.End, call the HttpContext.Current.ApplicationInstance.CompleteRequest method instead of Response.End to bypass the code execution to the Application_EndRequest event

Call a python function from jinja2

from jinja2 import Template

def custom_function(a):
    return a.replace('o', 'ay')

template = Template('Hey, my name is {{ custom_function(first_name) }} {{ func2(last_name) }}')
template.globals['custom_function'] = custom_function

You can also give the function in the fields as per Matroskin's answer

fields = {'first_name': 'Jo', 'last_name': 'Ko', 'func2': custom_function}
print template.render(**fields)

Will output:

Hey, my name is Jay Kay

Works with Jinja2 version 2.7.3

Determine whether an array contains a value

It's almost always safer to use a library like lodash simply because of all the issues with cross-browser compatibilities and efficiency.

Efficiency because you can be guaranteed that at any given time, a hugely popular library like underscore will have the most efficient method of accomplishing a utility function like this.

_.includes([1, 2, 3], 3); // returns true

If you're concerned about the bulk that's being added to your application by including the whole library, know that you can include functionality separately:

var includes = require('lodash/collections/includes');

NOTICE: With older versions of lodash, this was _.contains() rather than _.includes().

((TextView) v.findViewById(R.id.title)).setText(FRAGMENT_TITLE);

activity.getSupportActionBar().setCustomView(v, p);
activity.getSupportActionBar().setDisplayShowTitleEnabled(true);

Is there way to use two PHP versions in XAMPP?

Follow this easy steps. I am currently running XAMPP on PHP 7.2 but needs PHP 5.6 to work on old projects

STEP 1

Download Thread Safe version of PHP on https://windows.php.net/download

Put files on your [Drive]:\xampp\php5.6

  • Rename the folder depending on Php version

STEP 2

Copy [Drive]:\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-xampp.conf

Rename it to [Drive]:\xampp\apache\conf\extra\httpd-xampp5.6.confRename the file depending on Php version

STEP 3

Edit the newly created 'httpd-xampp5.6.conf'

basically you need to change All the PHP source and .dll

Before

LoadFile "C:/xampp/php/php7ts.dll"
LoadFile "C:/xampp/php/libpq.dll"
LoadModule php7_module "C:/xampp/php/php7apache2_4.dll"

After

LoadFile "C:/xampp/php5.6/php5ts.dll"
LoadFile "C:/xampp/php5.6/libpq.dll"
LoadModule php5_module "C:/xampp/php5.6/php5apache2_4.dll"

Here is my file: https://gist.github.com/mpalencia/f8a20c31bffb02fe20d371218c23d1ec

STEP 4

Edit the file [Drive]:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf

Before

# XAMPP settings
Include "conf/extra/httpd-xampp.conf"

After

# XAMPP settings
Include "conf/extra/httpd-xampp5.6.conf"
  • You can just edit this line when switching to diffent version

STEP 5

Edit your PHP 5.6 configuration - php.ini

Add you extension directory: extension_dir = "C:\xampp\php5.6\ext"

STEP 6

Start Apache

STEP 7

Edit PHP environment variable path on Windows

What are the most widely used C++ vector/matrix math/linear algebra libraries, and their cost and benefit tradeoffs?

Okay, I think I know what you're looking for. It appears that GGT is a pretty good solution, as Reed Copsey suggested.

Personally, we rolled our own little library, because we deal with rational points a lot - lots of rational NURBS and Beziers.

It turns out that most 3D graphics libraries do computations with projective points that have no basis in projective math, because that's what gets you the answer you want. We ended up using Grassmann points, which have a solid theoretical underpinning and decreased the number of point types. Grassmann points are basically the same computations people are using now, with the benefit of a robust theory. Most importantly, it makes things clearer in our minds, so we have fewer bugs. Ron Goldman wrote a paper on Grassmann points in computer graphics called "On the Algebraic and Geometric Foundations of Computer Graphics".

Not directly related to your question, but an interesting read.

For percona, use /opt/local/var/run/percona/mysqld.sock

Storing and Retrieving ArrayList values from hashmap

You could try using MultiMap instead of HashMap

Initialising it will require fewer lines of codes. Adding and retrieving the values will also make it shorter.

Map<String, List<Integer>> map = new HashMap<String, List<Integer>>();

would become:

Multimap<String, Integer> multiMap = ArrayListMultimap.create();

You can check this link: http://java.dzone.com/articles/hashmap-%E2%80%93-single-key-and

Remove array element based on object property

One possibility:

myArray = myArray.filter(function( obj ) {
    return obj.field !== 'money';
});

Please note that filter creates a new array. Any other variables referring to the original array would not get the filtered data although you update your original variable myArray with the new reference. Use with caution.

Secondary axis with twinx(): how to add to legend?

A quick hack that may suit your needs..

Take off the frame of the box and manually position the two legends next to each other. Something like this..

ax1.legend(loc = (.75,.1), frameon = False)
ax2.legend( loc = (.75, .05), frameon = False)

Where the loc tuple is left-to-right and bottom-to-top percentages that represent the location in the chart.

How to remove first and last character of a string?

Another solution for this issue is use commons-lang (since version 2.0) StringUtils.substringBetween(String str, String open, String close) method. Main advantage is that it's null safe operation.

python pip: force install ignoring dependencies

When I were trying install librosa package with pip (pip install librosa), this error were appeared:

ERROR: Cannot uninstall 'llvmlite'. It is a distutils installed project and thus we cannot accurately determine which files belong to it which would lead to only a partial uninstall.

I tried to remove llvmlite, but pip uninstall could not remove it. So, I used capability of ignore of pip by this code:

pip install librosa --ignore-installed llvmlite

Indeed, you can use this rule for ignoring a package you don't want to consider:

pip install {package you want to install} --ignore-installed {installed package you don't want to consider}

Make Div Draggable using CSS

CSS is designed to describe the presentation of documents. It has a few features for changing that presentation in reaction to user interaction (primarily :hover for indicating that you are now pointing at something interactive).

Making something draggable isn't a simple matter of presentation. It is firmly in the territory of interactivity logic, which is handled by JavaScript.

What you want is not achievable.

forcing web-site to show in landscape mode only

@Golmaal really answered this, I'm just being a bit more verbose.

<style type="text/css">
    #warning-message { display: none; }
    @media only screen and (orientation:portrait){
        #wrapper { display:none; }
        #warning-message { display:block; }
    }
    @media only screen and (orientation:landscape){
        #warning-message { display:none; }
    }
</style>

....

<div id="wrapper">
    <!-- your html for your website -->
</div>
<div id="warning-message">
    this website is only viewable in landscape mode
</div>

You have no control over the user moving the orientation however you can at least message them. This example will hide the wrapper if in portrait mode and show the warning message and then hide the warning message in landscape mode and show the portrait.

I don't think this answer is any better than @Golmaal , only a compliment to it. If you like this answer, make sure to give @Golmaal the credit.

I've been working with Cordova a lot recently and it turns out you CAN control it when you have access to the native features.

Another Update

So after releasing Cordova it is really terrible in the end. It is better to use something like React Native if you want JavaScript. It is really amazing and I know it isn't pure web but the pure web experience on mobile kind of failed.

How to copy marked text in notepad++

As of Notepad++ 5.9 they added a feature to 'Remove Unmarked Lines' which can be used to strip away everything that you don't want along with some search and replaces for the other text on each value line.

  1. Use the Search-->Find-->Mark functionality to mark each line you want to keep/copy and remember to tick 'Bookmark Line' before marking the text
  2. Select Search-->Bookmark-->Remove Unmarked Lines
  3. Use Search-->Find-->Replace to replace other text you do not want to keep/copy with nothing
  4. Save the remaining text or copy it.

You can also do a similar thing using Search-->Bookmark-->Copy Bookmarked Lines

So technically you still cannot copy marked text, but you can bookmark lines with marked text and then perform various operations on bookmarked or unmarked lines.

'System.Net.Http.HttpContent' does not contain a definition for 'ReadAsAsync' and no extension method

Make sure that you have installed the correct NuGet package in your console application:

<package id="Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Client" version="4.0.20710.0" />

and that you are targeting at least .NET 4.0.

This being said, your GetAllFoos function is defined to return an IEnumerable<Prospect> whereas in your ReadAsAsync method you are passing IEnumerable<Foo> which obviously are not compatible types.

Install-Package Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Client

How to use Git Revert

The reason reset and revert tend to come up a lot in the same conversations is because different version control systems use them to mean different things.

In particular, people who are used to SVN or P4 who want to throw away uncommitted changes to a file will often reach for revert before being told that they actually want reset.

Similarly, the revert equivalent in other VCSes is often called rollback or something similar - but "rollback" can also mean "I want to completely discard the last few commits", which is appropriate for reset but not revert. So, there's a lot of confusion where people know what they want to do, but aren't clear on which command they should be using for it.

As for your actual questions about revert...

Okay, you're going to use git revert but how?

git revert first-bad-commit..last-bad-commit

And after running git revert do you have to do something else after? Do you have to commit the changes revert made or does revert directly commit to the repo or what??

By default, git revert prompts you for a commit message and then commits the results. This can be overridden. I quote the man page:

--edit

With this option, git revert will let you edit the commit message prior to committing the revert. This is the default if you run the command from a terminal.

--no-commit

Usually the command automatically creates some commits with commit log messages stating which commits were reverted. This flag applies the changes necessary to revert the named commits to your working tree and the index, but does not make the commits. In addition, when this option is used, your index does not have to match the HEAD commit. The revert is done against the beginning state of your index.

This is useful when reverting more than one commits' effect to your index in a row.

In particular, by default it creates a new commit for each commit you're reverting. You can use revert --no-commit to create changes reverting all of them without committing those changes as individual commits, then commit at your leisure.

Can I update a component's props in React.js?

Props can change when a component's parent renders the component again with different properties. I think this is mostly an optimization so that no new component needs to be instantiated.

SQL query to find third highest salary in company

you can find the third most salary with this query:

SELECT min(salary)
FROM tblEmployee
WHERE salary IN (SELECT TOP(3) salary
                 FROM tblEmployee
                 ORDER BY salary DESC)

.prop() vs .attr()

There are few more considerations in prop() vs attr():

  • selectedIndex, tagName, nodeName, nodeType, ownerDocument, defaultChecked, and defaultSelected..etc should be retrieved and set with the .prop() method. These do not have corresponding attributes and are only properties.

  • For input type checkbox

       .attr('checked') //returns  checked
       .prop('checked') //returns  true
       .is(':checked') //returns true

  • prop method returns Boolean value for checked, selected, disabled, readOnly..etc while attr returns defined string. So, you can directly use .prop(‘checked’) in if condition.

  • .attr() calls .prop() internally so .attr() method will be slightly slower than accessing them directly through .prop().

Android: ListView elements with multiple clickable buttons

I don't have much experience than above users but I faced this same issue and I Solved this with below Solution

<Button
        android:id="@+id/btnRemove"
        android:layout_width="0dp"
        android:layout_height="wrap_content"
        android:layout_toRightOf="@+id/btnEdit"
        android:layout_weight="1"
        android:background="@drawable/btn"
        android:text="@string/remove"
        android:onClick="btnRemoveClick"
        />

btnRemoveClick Click event

public void btnRemoveClick(View v)
{
    final int position = listviewItem.getPositionForView((View) v.getParent());
    listItem.remove(position);
    ItemAdapter.notifyDataSetChanged();

}

Html ordered list 1.1, 1.2 (Nested counters and scope) not working

I encountered similar problem recently. The fix is to set the display property of the li items in the ordered list to list-item, and not display block, and ensure that the display property of ol is not list-item. i.e

li { display: list-item;}

With this, the html parser sees all li as the list item and assign the appropriate value to it, and sees the ol, as an inline-block or block element based on your settings, and doesn't try to assign any count value to it.

How to restore the permissions of files and directories within git if they have been modified?

Thanks @muhqu for his great answer. In my case not all changes files had permissions changed which prevented the command to work.

$ git diff -p -R --no-ext-diff --no-color | grep -E "^(diff|(old|new) mode)" --color=never
diff --git b/file1 a/file1
diff --git b/file2 a/file2
old mode 100755
new mode 100644
$ git diff -p -R --no-ext-diff --no-color | grep -E "^(diff|(old|new) mode)" --color=never | git apply
warning: file1 has type 100644, expected 100755

The patch would then stop and files would be left untouched.

In case some people have similar problem I solved this by tweaking the command to grep only files with permission changed:

grep -E "^old mode (100644|100755)" -B1 -A1

or for the git alias

git config --global --add alias.permission-reset '!git diff -p -R --no-ext-diff --no-color | grep -E "^old mode (100644|100755)" -B1 -A1 --color=never | git apply'

How do I retrieve query parameters in Spring Boot?

In Spring boot: 2.1.6, you can use like below:

    @GetMapping("/orders")
    @ApiOperation(value = "retrieve orders", response = OrderResponse.class, responseContainer = "List")
    public List<OrderResponse> getOrders(
            @RequestParam(value = "creationDateTimeFrom", required = true) String creationDateTimeFrom,
            @RequestParam(value = "creationDateTimeTo", required = true) String creationDateTimeTo,
            @RequestParam(value = "location_id", required = true) String location_id) {

        // TODO...

        return response;

@ApiOperation is an annotation that comes from Swagger api, It is used for documenting the apis.

Select rows which are not present in other table

SELECT * FROM testcases1 t WHERE NOT EXISTS ( SELECT 1
FROM executions1 i WHERE t.tc_id = i.tc_id and t.pro_id=i.pro_id and pro_id=7 and version_id=5 ) and pro_id=7 ;

Here testcases1 table contains all datas and executions1 table contains some data among testcases1 table. I am retrieving only the datas which are not present in exections1 table. ( and even I am giving some conditions inside that you can also give.) specify condition which should not be there in retrieving data should be inside brackets.

How to remove a variable from a PHP session array

Is the $_SESSION['name'] variable an array? If you want to delete a specific key from within an array, you have to refer to that exact key in the unset() call, otherwise you delete the entire array, e.g.

$name = array(0 => 'a', 1 => 'b', 2 => 'c');
unset($name); // deletes the entire array
unset($name[1]); // deletes only the 'b' entry

Another minor problem with your snippet: You're mixing GET query parameters in with a POST form. Is there any reason why you can't do the forms with 'name' being passed in a hidden field? It's best to not mix get and post variables, especially if you use $_REQUEST elsewhere. You can run into all kinds of fun trying to figure out why $_GET['name'] isn't showing up the same as $_POST['name'], because the server's got a differnt EGPCS order set in the 'variables_order' .ini setting.

<form blah blah blah method="post">
  <input type="hidden" name="name" value="<?= htmlspecialchars($list1) ?>" />
  <input type="submit" name="add" value="Add />
</form>

And note the htmlspecialchars() call. If either $list1 or $list2 contain a double quote ("), it'll break your HTML

How to set width of a div in percent in JavaScript?

Also you can use .prop() and it should be better because

Since jQuery 1.6, these properties can no longer be set with the .attr() method. They do not have corresponding attributes and are only properties.

$(elem).prop('height', '100%');

Iterating Through a Dictionary in Swift

Arrays are ordered collections but dictionaries and sets are unordered collections. Thus you can't predict the order of iteration in a dictionary or a set.

What is the difference between declarations, providers, and import in NgModule?

imports are used to import supporting modules like FormsModule, RouterModule, CommonModule, or any other custom-made feature module.

declarations are used to declare components, directives, pipes that belong to the current module. Everyone inside declarations knows each other. For example, if we have a component, say UsernameComponent, which displays a list of the usernames and we also have a pipe, say toupperPipe, which transforms a string to an uppercase letter string. Now If we want to show usernames in uppercase letters in our UsernameComponent then we can use the toupperPipe which we had created before but the question is how UsernameComponent knows that the toupperPipe exists and how it can access and use that. Here come the declarations, we can declare UsernameComponent and toupperPipe.

Providers are used for injecting the services required by components, directives, pipes in the module.

How to use conditional statement within child attribute of a Flutter Widget (Center Widget)

In such a case I would recommand using the ternary operator:

child: condition ? Container() : Center()

and try to avoid code of the form:

if (condition) return A else return B

which is needlessly more verbose than the ternary operator.

But if more logic is needed you may also:

Use the Builder widget

The Builder widget is meant for allowing the use of a closure when a child widget is required:

A platonic widget that calls a closure to obtain its child widget.

It is convenient anytime you need logic to build a widget, it avoids the need to create a dedicated function.

You use the Builder widget as the child, you provide your logic in its builder method:

Center(
  child: Builder(
    builder: (context) {
      // any logic needed...
      final condition = _whateverLogicNeeded();

      return condition
          ? Container();
          : Center();
    }
  )
)

The Builder provides a convenient place to hold the creational logic. It is more straightforward than the immediate anonymous function proposed by atreeon.

Also I agree that the logic should be extracted from the UI code, but when it's really UI logic it is sometimes more legible to keep it there.

How do I change the root directory of an Apache server?

This is for Ubunutu 14.04:

In file /etc/apache2/apache2.conf it should be as below without the directory name:

<Directory /home/username>
    Options Indexes FollowSymLinks
    AllowOverride All
    Require all granted
</Directory>

And in file /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-default.conf you should include the custom directory name, i.e., www:

DocumentRoot /home/username/www

If it is not as above, it will give you an error when loading the server:

Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server

How do I make jQuery wait for an Ajax call to finish before it returns?

Instead of setting async to false which is usually bad design, you may want to consider blocking the UI while the operation is pending.

This can be nicely achieved with jQuery promises as follows:

// same as $.ajax but settings can have a maskUI property
// if settings.maskUI==true, the UI will be blocked while ajax in progress
// if settings.maskUI is other than true, it's value will be used as the color value while bloking (i.e settings.maskUI='rgba(176,176,176,0.7)'
// in addition an hourglass is displayed while ajax in progress
function ajaxMaskUI(settings) {
    function maskPageOn(color) { // color can be ie. 'rgba(176,176,176,0.7)' or 'transparent'
        var div = $('#maskPageDiv');
        if (div.length === 0) {
            $(document.body).append('<div id="maskPageDiv" style="position:fixed;width:100%;height:100%;left:0;top:0;display:none"></div>'); // create it
            div = $('#maskPageDiv');
        }
        if (div.length !== 0) {
            div[0].style.zIndex = 2147483647;
            div[0].style.backgroundColor=color;
            div[0].style.display = 'inline';
        }
    }
    function maskPageOff() {
        var div = $('#maskPageDiv');
        if (div.length !== 0) {
            div[0].style.display = 'none';
            div[0].style.zIndex = 'auto';
        }
    }
    function hourglassOn() {
        if ($('style:contains("html.hourGlass")').length < 1) $('<style>').text('html.hourGlass, html.hourGlass * { cursor: wait !important; }').appendTo('head');
        $('html').addClass('hourGlass');
    }
    function hourglassOff() {
        $('html').removeClass('hourGlass');
    }

    if (settings.maskUI===true) settings.maskUI='transparent';

    if (!!settings.maskUI) {
        maskPageOn(settings.maskUI);
        hourglassOn();
    }

    var dfd = new $.Deferred();
    $.ajax(settings)
        .fail(function(jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) {
            if (!!settings.maskUI) {
                maskPageOff();
                hourglassOff();
            }
            dfd.reject(jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown);
        }).done(function(data, textStatus, jqXHR) {
            if (!!settings.maskUI) {
                maskPageOff();
                hourglassOff();
            }
            dfd.resolve(data, textStatus, jqXHR);
        });

    return dfd.promise();
}

with this you can now do:

ajaxMaskUI({
    url: url,
    maskUI: true // or try for example 'rgba(176,176,176,0.7)'
}).fail(function (jqXHR, textStatus, errorThrown) {
    console.log('error ' + textStatus);
}).done(function (data, textStatus, jqXHR) {
    console.log('success ' + JSON.stringify(data));
});

And the UI will block until the ajax command returns

Keras input explanation: input_shape, units, batch_size, dim, etc

Input Dimension Clarified:

Not a direct answer, but I just realized the word Input Dimension could be confusing enough, so be wary:

It (the word dimension alone) can refer to:

a) The dimension of Input Data (or stream) such as # N of sensor axes to beam the time series signal, or RGB color channel (3): suggested word=> "InputStream Dimension"

b) The total number /length of Input Features (or Input layer) (28 x 28 = 784 for the MINST color image) or 3000 in the FFT transformed Spectrum Values, or

"Input Layer / Input Feature Dimension"

c) The dimensionality (# of dimension) of the input (typically 3D as expected in Keras LSTM) or (#RowofSamples, #of Senors, #of Values..) 3 is the answer.

"N Dimensionality of Input"

d) The SPECIFIC Input Shape (eg. (30,50,50,3) in this unwrapped input image data, or (30, 250, 3) if unwrapped Keras:

Keras has its input_dim refers to the Dimension of Input Layer / Number of Input Feature

model = Sequential()
model.add(Dense(32, input_dim=784)) #or 3 in the current posted example above
model.add(Activation('relu'))

In Keras LSTM, it refers to the total Time Steps

The term has been very confusing, is correct and we live in a very confusing world!!

I find one of the challenge in Machine Learning is to deal with different languages or dialects and terminologies (like if you have 5-8 highly different versions of English, then you need to very high proficiency to converse with different speakers). Probably this is the same in programming languages too.

How do I position a div at the bottom center of the screen

If you aren't comfortable with using negative margins, check this out.

div {
  position: fixed;
  left: 50%;
  bottom: 20px;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
  margin: 0 auto;
}
<div>
  Your Text
</div>

Especially useful when you don't know the width of the div.

align="center" has no effect.

Since you have position:absolute, I would recommend positioning it 50% from the left and then subtracting half of its width from its left margin.

#manipulate {
    position:absolute;
    width:300px;
    height:300px;
    background:#063;
    bottom:0px;
    right:25%;
    left:50%;
    margin-left:-150px;
}

How do I use a third-party DLL file in Visual Studio C++?

As everyone else says, LoadLibrary is the hard way to do it, and is hardly ever necessary.

The DLL should have come with a .lib file for linking, and one or more header files to #include into your sources. The header files will define the classes and function prototypes that you can use from the DLL. You will need this even if you use LoadLibrary.

To link with the library, you might have to add the .lib file to the project configuration under Linker/Input/Additional Dependencies.

Python function global variables?

As others have noted, you need to declare a variable global in a function when you want that function to be able to modify the global variable. If you only want to access it, then you don't need global.

To go into a bit more detail on that, what "modify" means is this: if you want to re-bind the global name so it points to a different object, the name must be declared global in the function.

Many operations that modify (mutate) an object do not re-bind the global name to point to a different object, and so they are all valid without declaring the name global in the function.

d = {}
l = []
o = type("object", (object,), {})()

def valid(): # these are all valid without declaring any names global!
   d[0] = 1      # changes what's in d, but d still points to the same object
   d[0] += 1     # ditto
   d.clear() # ditto! d is now empty but it`s still the same object!
   l.append(0) # l is still the same list but has an additional member
   o.test = 1 # creating new attribute on o, but o is still the same object

What is secret key for JWT based authentication and how to generate it?

What is the secret key does, you may have already known till now. It is basically HMAC SH256 (Secure Hash). The Secret is a symmetrical key.

Using the same key you can generate, & reverify, edit, etc.

For more secure, you can go with private, public key (asymmetric way). Private key to create token, public key to verify at client level.

Coming to secret key what to give You can give anything, "sudsif", "sdfn2173", any length

you can use online generator, or manually write

I prefer using openssl

C:\Users\xyz\Desktop>openssl rand -base64 12
65JymYzDDqqLW8Eg

generate, then encode with base 64

C:\Users\xyz\Desktop>openssl rand -out openssl-secret.txt -hex 20

The generated value is saved inside the file named "openssl-secret.txt"

generate, & store into a file.

One thing is giving 12 will generate, 12 characters only, but since it is base 64 encoded, it will be (4/3*n) ceiling value.

How to change indentation in Visual Studio Code?

In the toolbar in the bottom right corner you will see a item that looks like the following: enter image description here After clicking on it you will get the option to indent using either spaces or tabs. After selecting your indent type you will then have the option to change how big an indent is. In the case of the example above, indentation is set to 4 space characters per indent. If tab is selected as your indentation character then you will see Tab Size instead of Spaces

If you want to have this apply to all files and not on an idividual file basis, override the Editor: Tab Size and Editor: Insert Spaces settings in either User Settings or Workspace Settings depending on your needs

Edit 1

To get to your user or workspace settings go to Preferences -> Settings. Verify that you are on the User or Workspace tab depending on your needs and use the search bar to locate the settings. You may also want to disable Editor: Detect Indentation as this setting will override what you set for Editor: Insert Spaces and Editor: Tab Size when it is enabled

Recommended way to save uploaded files in a servlet application

Store it anywhere in an accessible location except of the IDE's project folder aka the server's deploy folder, for reasons mentioned in the answer to Uploaded image only available after refreshing the page:

  1. Changes in the IDE's project folder does not immediately get reflected in the server's work folder. There's kind of a background job in the IDE which takes care that the server's work folder get synced with last updates (this is in IDE terms called "publishing"). This is the main cause of the problem you're seeing.

  2. In real world code there are circumstances where storing uploaded files in the webapp's deploy folder will not work at all. Some servers do (either by default or by configuration) not expand the deployed WAR file into the local disk file system, but instead fully in the memory. You can't create new files in the memory without basically editing the deployed WAR file and redeploying it.

  3. Even when the server expands the deployed WAR file into the local disk file system, all newly created files will get lost on a redeploy or even a simple restart, simply because those new files are not part of the original WAR file.

It really doesn't matter to me or anyone else where exactly on the local disk file system it will be saved, as long as you do not ever use getRealPath() method. Using that method is in any case alarming.

The path to the storage location can in turn be definied in many ways. You have to do it all by yourself. Perhaps this is where your confusion is caused because you somehow expected that the server does that all automagically. Please note that @MultipartConfig(location) does not specify the final upload destination, but the temporary storage location for the case file size exceeds memory storage threshold.

So, the path to the final storage location can be definied in either of the following ways:

  • Hardcoded:

      File uploads = new File("/path/to/uploads");

  • Environment variable via SET UPLOAD_LOCATION=/path/to/uploads:

      File uploads = new File(System.getenv("UPLOAD_LOCATION"));

  • VM argument during server startup via -Dupload.location="/path/to/uploads":

      File uploads = new File(System.getProperty("upload.location"));

  • *.properties file entry as upload.location=/path/to/uploads:

      File uploads = new File(properties.getProperty("upload.location"));

  • web.xml <context-param> with name upload.location and value /path/to/uploads:

      File uploads = new File(getServletContext().getInitParameter("upload.location"));

  • If any, use the server-provided location, e.g. in JBoss AS/WildFly:

      File uploads = new File(System.getProperty("jboss.server.data.dir"), "uploads");

Either way, you can easily reference and save the file as follows:

File file = new File(uploads, "somefilename.ext");

try (InputStream input = part.getInputStream()) {
    Files.copy(input, file.toPath());
}

Or, when you want to autogenerate an unique file name to prevent users from overwriting existing files with coincidentally the same name:

File file = File.createTempFile("somefilename-", ".ext", uploads);

try (InputStream input = part.getInputStream()) {
    Files.copy(input, file.toPath(), StandardCopyOption.REPLACE_EXISTING);
}

How to obtain part in JSP/Servlet is answered in How to upload files to server using JSP/Servlet? and how to obtain part in JSF is answered in How to upload file using JSF 2.2 <h:inputFile>? Where is the saved File?

Note: do not use Part#write() as it interprets the path relative to the temporary storage location defined in @MultipartConfig(location).

HTML Code for text checkbox '?'

Just make sure that your HTML file is encoded with UTF-8 and that your web server sends a HTTP header with that charset, then you just can write that character directly into your HTMl file.

If you can't use UTF-8 for some reason, you can look up the codes in a unicode list such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters and use &#xABCD; where ABCD is the hexcode from that list (U+ABCD).

Angular - Can't make ng-repeat orderBy work

the built-in orderBy filter will no longer work when iterating an object. It’s ignored due to the way that object fields are stored. You need create a custom filter

    var filtered = [];
    angular.forEach(items, function(item) {
      filtered.push(item);

  };
});

How can I increase the cursor speed in terminal?

If by "cursor speed", you mean the repeat rate when holding down a key - then have a look here: http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090823193018149

To summarize, open up a Terminal window and type the following command:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain KeyRepeat -int 0

More detail from the article:

Everybody knows that you can get a pretty fast keyboard repeat rate by changing a slider on the Keyboard tab of the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences panel. But you can make it even faster! In Terminal, run this command:

defaults write NSGlobalDomain KeyRepeat -int 0

Then log out and log in again. The fastest setting obtainable via System Preferences is 2 (lower numbers are faster), so you may also want to try a value of 1 if 0 seems too fast. You can always visit the Keyboard & Mouse System Preferences panel to undo your changes.

You may find that a few applications don't handle extremely fast keyboard input very well, but most will do just fine with it.

On Selenium WebDriver how to get Text from Span Tag

Maybe the span element is hidden. If that's the case then use the innerHtml property:

By.css:

String kk = wd.findElement(By.cssSelector("#customSelect_3 span.selectLabel"))
              .getAttribute("innerHTML");

By.xpath:

String kk = wd.findElement(By.xpath(
                   "//*[@id='customSelect_3']/.//span[contains(@class,'selectLabel')]"))
              .getAttribute("innerHTML");

"/.//" means "look under the selected element".

  font-weight: normal;
  color: #fff;
}

It will change the background color of the dialog buttons.

Execution failed for task ':app:compileDebugAidl': aidl is missing

I tried to uninstall/install and it did not work. I am running OSX 10.10.3 with Android Studio 1.2.1.1 on JDK 1.8.0_45-b14 and the solution I found to work is similar to Jorge Casariego's recommendation. Basically, out of the box you get a build error for a missing 'aidl' module so simply changing the Build Tools Version to not be version 23.0.0 rc1 will solve your problem. It appears to have a bug.

UPDATE After commenting on an Android issue on their tracker (https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=175080) a project member from the Android Tools group commented that to use the Build Tools Version 23.0.0 rc1 you need to be using Android Gradle Plugin 1.3.0-beta1 (Android Studio comes configured with 1.2.3). He also noted (read the issue comments) that the IDE should have given an notification that you need to do this to make it work. For me I have not seen a notification and I've requested clarification from that project member. Nonetheless his guidance solved the issue perfectly so read on.

Solution: Open your build.gradle for your Project (not Module). Find the line classpath com.android.tools.build:gradle:xxx under dependencies where xxx is the Gradle Plugin version and make the update. Save and Rebuild your project. Here is the Android Gradle docs for managing your Gradle versions: https://developer.android.com/tools/revisions/gradle-plugin.html

Displaying standard DataTables in MVC

Here is the answer in Razor syntax

 <table border="1" cellpadding="5">
    <thead>
       <tr>
          @foreach (System.Data.DataColumn col in Model.Columns)
          {
             <th>@col.Caption</th>
          }
       </tr>
    </thead>
    <tbody>
    @foreach(System.Data.DataRow row in Model.Rows)
    {
       <tr>
          @foreach (var cell in row.ItemArray)
          {
             <td>@cell.ToString()</td>
          }
       </tr>
    }
    </tbody>
</table>

The property 'Id' is part of the object's key information and cannot be modified

Try

contact.ContactType = differentContactType;

or

contact.ContactTypeId = 3;

You are trying to set the Id of the ContactType (of the Contact) to 3.

What is the difference between instanceof and Class.isAssignableFrom(...)?

There is yet another difference. If the type (Class) to test against is dynamic, e.g. passed as a method parameter, then instanceof won't cut it for you.

boolean test(Class clazz) {
   return (this instanceof clazz); // clazz cannot be resolved to a type.
}

but you can do:

boolean test(Class clazz) {
   return (clazz.isAssignableFrom(this.getClass())); // okidoki
}

Oops, I see this answer is already covered. Maybe this example is helpful to someone.

How do you update a DateTime field in T-SQL?

The string literal is pased according to the current dateformat setting, see SET DATEFORMAT. One format which will always work is the '20090525' one.

Now, of course, you need to define 'does not work'. No records gets updated? Perhaps the Id=1 doesn't match any record...

If it says 'One record changed' then perhaps you need to show us how you verify...

How do I tell matplotlib that I am done with a plot?

Calling async method synchronously

EDIT:

Task has Wait method, Task.Wait(), which waits for the "promise" to resolve and then continues, thus rendering it synchronous. example:

async Task<String> MyAsyncMethod() { ... }

String mySyncMethod() {

    return MyAsyncMethod().Wait();
}

How to truncate text in Angular2?

You can truncate text based on CSS. It helps to truncate a text-based on width not fix character.

Example

CSS

.truncate {
            white-space: nowrap;
            overflow: hidden;
            text-overflow: ellipsis;
        }

.content {
            width:100%;
            white-space: nowrap;
            overflow: hidden;
            text-overflow: ellipsis;
        }

HTML

<div class="content">
    <span class="truncate">Lorem Ipsum is simply dummied text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.</span>
</div>

Note: this code use full for one line not for more than one.

Ketan's Solution is best if you want to do it by Angular

Check if string contains only whitespace

Use the str.isspace() method:

Return True if there are only whitespace characters in the string and there is at least one character, False otherwise.

A character is whitespace if in the Unicode character database (see unicodedata), either its general category is Zs (“Separator, space”), or its bidirectional class is one of WS, B, or S.

Combine that with a special case for handling the empty string.

Alternatively, you could use str.strip() and check if the result is empty.

Restrict SQL Server Login access to only one database

I think this is what we like to do very much.

--Step 1: (create a new user)
create LOGIN hello WITH PASSWORD='foo', CHECK_POLICY = OFF;

-- Step 2:(deny view to any database)
USE master;
GO
DENY VIEW ANY DATABASE TO hello;

 -- step 3 (then authorized the user for that specific database , you have to use the master by doing use master as below)
USE master;
GO
ALTER AUTHORIZATION ON DATABASE::yourDB TO hello;
GO

If you already created a user and assigned to that database before by doing

USE [yourDB]
CREATE USER hello FOR LOGIN hello WITH DEFAULT_SCHEMA=[dbo]
GO

then kindly delete it by doing below and follow the steps

   USE yourDB;
   GO
   DROP USER newlogin;
   GO

how to get multiple checkbox value using jquery

You can do it like this,

$('.ads_Checkbox:checked')

You can iterate through them with each() and fill the array with checkedbox values.

Live Demo

To get the values of selected checkboxes in array

var i = 0;
$('#save_value').click(function () {
       var arr = [];
       $('.ads_Checkbox:checked').each(function () {
           arr[i++] = $(this).val();
       });
});

Edit, using .map()

You can also use jQuery.map with get() to get the array of selected checkboxe values.

As a side note using this.value instead of $(this).val() would give better performance.

Live Demo

$('#save_value').click(function(){
    var arr = $('.ads_Checkbox:checked').map(function(){
        return this.value;
    }).get();
});

CSS selector for disabled input type="submit"

Does that work in IE6?

No, IE6 does not support attribute selectors at all, cf. CSS Compatibility and Internet Explorer.

You might find How to workaround: IE6 does not support CSS “attribute” selectors worth the read.

EDIT
If you are to ignore IE6, you could do (CSS2.1):

input[type=submit][disabled=disabled],
button[disabled=disabled] {
    ...
}

CSS3 (IE9+):

input[type=submit]:disabled,
button:disabled {
    ...
}

You can substitute [disabled=disabled] (attribute value) with [disabled] (attribute presence).

Align two inline-blocks left and right on same line

Edit: 3 years has passed since I answered this question and I guess a more modern solution is needed, although the current one does the thing :)

1.Flexbox

It's by far the shortest and most flexible. Apply display: flex; to the parent container and adjust the placement of its children by justify-content: space-between; like this:

.header {
    display: flex;
    justify-content: space-between;
}

Can be seen online here - http://jsfiddle.net/skip405/NfeVh/1073/

Note however that flexbox support is IE10 and newer. If you need to support IE 9 or older, use the following solution:

2.You can use the text-align: justify technique here.

.header {
    background: #ccc;
    text-align: justify;

    /* ie 7*/
    *width: 100%;
    *-ms-text-justify: distribute-all-lines;
    *text-justify: distribute-all-lines;
}
 .header:after{
    content: '';
    display: inline-block;
    width: 100%;
    height: 0;
    font-size:0;
    line-height:0;
}

h1 {
    display: inline-block;
    margin-top: 0.321em;

    /* ie 7*/
    *display: inline;
    *zoom: 1;
    *text-align: left;
}

.nav {
    display: inline-block;
    vertical-align: baseline;

    /* ie 7*/
    *display: inline;
    *zoom:1;
    *text-align: right;
}

The working example can be seen here: http://jsfiddle.net/skip405/NfeVh/4/. This code works from IE7 and above

If inline-block elements in HTML are not separated with space, this solution won't work - see example http://jsfiddle.net/NfeVh/1408/ . This might be a case when you insert content with Javascript.

If we don't care about IE7 simply omit the star-hack properties. The working example using your markup is here - http://jsfiddle.net/skip405/NfeVh/5/. I just added the header:after part and justified the content.

In order to solve the issue of the extra space that is inserted with the after pseudo-element one can do a trick of setting the font-size to 0 for the parent element and resetting it back to say 14px for the child elements. The working example of this trick can be seen here: http://jsfiddle.net/skip405/NfeVh/326/

Declaration of Methods should be Compatible with Parent Methods in PHP

if you wanna keep OOP form without turning any error off, you can also:

class A
{
    public function foo() {
        ;
    }
}
class B extends A
{
    /*instead of :
    public function foo($a, $b, $c) {*/
    public function foo() {
        list($a, $b, $c) = func_get_args();
        // ...

    }
}

Save the plots into a PDF

If someone ends up here from google, looking to convert a single figure to a .pdf (that was what I was looking for):

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt

f = plt.figure()
plt.plot(range(10), range(10), "o")
plt.show()

f.savefig("foo.pdf", bbox_inches='tight')

Jquery Open in new Tab (_blank)

you cannot set target attribute to div, becacuse div does not know how to handle http requests. instead of you set target attribute for link tag.

$(this).find("a").target = "_blank";
window.location= $(this).find("a").attr("href")

Creating a selector from a method name with parameters

SEL is a type that represents a selector in Objective-C. The @selector() keyword returns a SEL that you describe. It's not a function pointer and you can't pass it any objects or references of any kind. For each variable in the selector (method), you have to represent that in the call to @selector. For example:

-(void)methodWithNoParameters;
SEL noParameterSelector = @selector(methodWithNoParameters);

-(void)methodWithOneParameter:(id)parameter;
SEL oneParameterSelector = @selector(methodWithOneParameter:); // notice the colon here

-(void)methodWIthTwoParameters:(id)parameterOne and:(id)parameterTwo;
SEL twoParameterSelector = @selector(methodWithTwoParameters:and:); // notice the parameter names are omitted

Selectors are generally passed to delegate methods and to callbacks to specify which method should be called on a specific object during a callback. For instance, when you create a timer, the callback method is specifically defined as:

-(void)someMethod:(NSTimer*)timer;

So when you schedule the timer you would use @selector to specify which method on your object will actually be responsible for the callback:

@implementation MyObject

-(void)myTimerCallback:(NSTimer*)timer
{
    // do some computations
    if( timerShouldEnd ) {
      [timer invalidate];
    }
}

@end

// ...

int main(int argc, const char **argv)
{
    // do setup stuff
    MyObject* obj = [[MyObject alloc] init];
    SEL mySelector = @selector(myTimerCallback:);
    [NSTimer scheduledTimerWithTimeInterval:30.0 target:obj selector:mySelector userInfo:nil repeats:YES];
    // do some tear-down
    return 0;
}

In this case you are specifying that the object obj be messaged with myTimerCallback every 30 seconds.

The module was expected to contain an assembly manifest

I found another strange reason and i thought maybe another developer confused as me. I did run install.bat that created to install my service in developer Command Prompt of VS2010 but my service generated in VS2012. it was going to this error and drives me to crazy but i try VS2012 Developer Command Prompt tools and everything gone to be OK. I don't no why but my problem was solved. so you can test it and if anyone know reason of that please share with us. Thanks.

Keyboard shortcuts are not active in Visual Studio with Resharper installed

I have tried many of the above issues and still had installation problems.

It turns out that downloading the full version (not the web installer), and running it as administrator finally got the latest version installed with no errors in VS 2015.

Receiving JSON data back from HTTP request

I think the shortest way is:

var client = new HttpClient();
string reqUrl = $"http://myhost.mydomain.com/api/products/{ProdId}";
var prodResp = await client.GetAsync(reqUrl);
if (!prodResp.IsSuccessStatusCode){
    FailRequirement();
}
var prods = await prodResp.Content.ReadAsAsync<Products>();

Convert string to ASCII value python

You can use a list comprehension:

>>> s = 'hi'
>>> [ord(c) for c in s]
[104, 105]

How to insert a newline in front of a pattern?

In vi on Red Hat, I was able to insert carriage returns using just the \r character. I believe this internally executes 'ex' instead of 'sed', but it's similar, and vi can be another way to do bulk edits such as code patches. For example. I am surrounding a search term with an if statement that insists on carriage returns after the braces:

:.,$s/\(my_function(.*)\)/if(!skip_option){\r\t\1\r\t}/

Note that I also had it insert some tabs to make things align better.

CSS no text wrap

Use the css property overflow . For example:

  .item{
    width : 100px;
    overflow:hidden;
  }

The overflow property can have one of many values like ( hidden , scroll , visible ) .. you can als control the overflow in one direction only using overflow-x or overflow-y.

I hope this helps.

getSupportActionBar() The method getSupportActionBar() is undefined for the type TaskActivity. Why?

If you are already extending from ActionBarActivity and you are trying to get the action bar from a fragment:

ActionBar mActionBar = (ActionBarActivity)getActivity()).getSupportActionBar();

Introductory, with previous programming experience

  • A Tour of C++ (Bjarne Stroustrup) (2nd edition for C++17) The “tour” is a quick (about 180 pages and 14 chapters) tutorial overview of all of standard C++ (language and standard library, and using C++11) at a moderately high level for people who already know C++ or at least are experienced programmers. This book is an extended version of the material that constitutes Chapters 2-5 of The C++ Programming Language, 4th edition.

  • Accelerated C++ (Andrew Koenig and Barbara Moo, 1st Edition - August 24, 2000) This basically covers the same ground as the C++ Primer, but does so on a fourth of its space. This is largely because it does not attempt to be an introduction to programming, but an introduction to C++ for people who've previously programmed in some other language. It has a steeper learning curve, but, for those who can cope with this, it is a very compact introduction to the language. (Historically, it broke new ground by being the first beginner's book to use a modern approach to teaching the language.) Despite this, the C++ it teaches is purely C++98. [Review]

Best practices

  • Effective C++ (Scott Meyers, 3rd Edition - May 22, 2005) This was written with the aim of being the best second book C++ programmers should read, and it succeeded. Earlier editions were aimed at programmers coming from C, the third edition changes this and targets programmers coming from languages like Java. It presents ~50 easy-to-remember rules of thumb along with their rationale in a very accessible (and enjoyable) style. For C++11 and C++14 the examples and a few issues are outdated and Effective Modern C++ should be preferred. [Review]

  • Effective Modern C++ (Scott Meyers) This is basically the new version of Effective C++, aimed at C++ programmers making the transition from C++03 to C++11 and C++14.

  • Effective STL (Scott Meyers) This aims to do the same to the part of the standard library coming from the STL what Effective C++ did to the language as a whole: It presents rules of thumb along with their rationale. [Review]

Intermediate

  • More Effective C++ (Scott Meyers) Even more rules of thumb than Effective C++. Not as important as the ones in the first book, but still good to know.

  • Exceptional C++ (Herb Sutter) Presented as a set of puzzles, this has one of the best and thorough discussions of the proper resource management and exception safety in C++ through Resource Acquisition is Initialization (RAII) in addition to in-depth coverage of a variety of other topics including the pimpl idiom, name lookup, good class design, and the C++ memory model. [Review]

  • More Exceptional C++ (Herb Sutter) Covers additional exception safety topics not covered in Exceptional C++, in addition to discussion of effective object-oriented programming in C++ and correct use of the STL. [Review]

  • Exceptional C++ Style (Herb Sutter) Discusses generic programming, optimization, and resource management; this book also has an excellent exposition of how to write modular code in C++ by using non-member functions and the single responsibility principle. [Review]

  • C++ Coding Standards (Herb Sutter and Andrei Alexandrescu) “Coding standards” here doesn't mean “how many spaces should I indent my code?” This book contains 101 best practices, idioms, and common pitfalls that can help you to write correct, understandable, and efficient C++ code. [Review]

  • C++ Templates: The Complete Guide (David Vandevoorde and Nicolai M. Josuttis) This is the book about templates as they existed before C++11. It covers everything from the very basics to some of the most advanced template metaprogramming and explains every detail of how templates work (both conceptually and at how they are implemented) and discusses many common pitfalls. Has excellent summaries of the One Definition Rule (ODR) and overload resolution in the appendices. A second edition covering C++11, C++14 and C++17 has been already published. [Review]

  • C++ 17 - The Complete Guide (Nicolai M. Josuttis) This book describes all the new features introduced in the C++17 Standard covering everything from the simple ones like 'Inline Variables', 'constexpr if' all the way up to 'Polymorphic Memory Resources' and 'New and Delete with overaligned Data'. [Review]

  • C++ in Action (Bartosz Milewski). This book explains C++ and its features by building an application from ground up. [Review]

  • Functional Programming in C++ (Ivan Cukic). This book introduces functional programming techniques to modern C++ (C++11 and later). A very nice read for those who want to apply functional programming paradigms to C++.

  • Professional C++ (Marc Gregoire, 5th Edition - Feb 2021) Provides a comprehensive and detailed tour of the C++ language implementation replete with professional tips and concise but informative in-text examples, emphasizing C++20 features. Uses C++20 features, such as modules and std::format throughout all examples.

Advanced

  • Modern C++ Design (Andrei Alexandrescu) A groundbreaking book on advanced generic programming techniques. Introduces policy-based design, type lists, and fundamental generic programming idioms then explains how many useful design patterns (including small object allocators, functors, factories, visitors, and multi-methods) can be implemented efficiently, modularly, and cleanly using generic programming. [Review]

  • C++ Template Metaprogramming (David Abrahams and Aleksey Gurtovoy)

  • C++ Concurrency In Action (Anthony Williams) A book covering C++11 concurrency support including the thread library, the atomics library, the C++ memory model, locks and mutexes, as well as issues of designing and debugging multithreaded applications. A second edition covering C++14 and C++17 has been already published. [Review]

  • Advanced C++ Metaprogramming (Davide Di Gennaro) A pre-C++11 manual of TMP techniques, focused more on practice than theory. There are a ton of snippets in this book, some of which are made obsolete by type traits, but the techniques, are nonetheless useful to know. If you can put up with the quirky formatting/editing, it is easier to read than Alexandrescu, and arguably, more rewarding. For more experienced developers, there is a good chance that you may pick up something about a dark corner of C++ (a quirk) that usually only comes about through extensive experience.

Reference Style - All Levels

  • The C++ Programming Language (Bjarne Stroustrup) (updated for C++11) The classic introduction to C++ by its creator. Written to parallel the classic K&R, this indeed reads very much like it and covers just about everything from the core language to the standard library, to programming paradigms to the language's philosophy. [Review] Note: All releases of the C++ standard are tracked in the question "Where do I find the current C or C++ standard documents?".

  • C++ Standard Library Tutorial and Reference (Nicolai Josuttis) (updated for C++11) The introduction and reference for the C++ Standard Library. The second edition (released on April 9, 2012) covers C++11. [Review]

  • The C++ IO Streams and Locales (Angelika Langer and Klaus Kreft) There's very little to say about this book except that, if you want to know anything about streams and locales, then this is the one place to find definitive answers. [Review]

C++11/14/17/… References:

  • The C++11/14/17 Standard (INCITS/ISO/IEC 14882:2011/2014/2017) This, of course, is the final arbiter of all that is or isn't C++. Be aware, however, that it is intended purely as a reference for experienced users willing to devote considerable time and effort to its understanding. The C++17 standard is released in electronic form for 198 Swiss Francs.

  • The C++17 standard is available, but seemingly not in an economical form – directly from the ISO it costs 198 Swiss Francs (about $200 US). For most people, the final draft before standardization is more than adequate (and free). Many will prefer an even newer draft, documenting new features that are likely to be included in C++20.

  • Overview of the New C++ (C++11/14) (PDF only) (Scott Meyers) (updated for C++14) These are the presentation materials (slides and some lecture notes) of a three-day training course offered by Scott Meyers, who's a highly respected author on C++. Even though the list of items is short, the quality is high.

  • The C++ Core Guidelines (C++11/14/17/…) (edited by Bjarne Stroustrup and Herb Sutter) is an evolving online document consisting of a set of guidelines for using modern C++ well. The guidelines are focused on relatively higher-level issues, such as interfaces, resource management, memory management and concurrency affecting application architecture and library design. The project was announced at CppCon'15 by Bjarne Stroustrup and others and welcomes contributions from the community. Most guidelines are supplemented with a rationale and examples as well as discussions of possible tool support. Many rules are designed specifically to be automatically checkable by static analysis tools.

  • The C++ Super-FAQ (Marshall Cline, Bjarne Stroustrup and others) is an effort by the Standard C++ Foundation to unify the C++ FAQs previously maintained individually by Marshall Cline and Bjarne Stroustrup and also incorporating new contributions. The items mostly address issues at an intermediate level and are often written with a humorous tone. Not all items might be fully up to date with the latest edition of the C++ standard yet.

  • cppreference.com (C++03/11/14/17/…) (initiated by Nate Kohl) is a wiki that summarizes the basic core-language features and has extensive documentation of the C++ standard library. The documentation is very precise but is easier to read than the official standard document and provides better navigation due to its wiki nature. The project documents all versions of the C++ standard and the site allows filtering the display for a specific version. The project was presented by Nate Kohl at CppCon'14.

Classics / Older

Note: Some information contained within these books may not be up-to-date or no longer considered best practice.

  • The Design and Evolution of C++ (Bjarne Stroustrup) If you want to know why the language is the way it is, this book is where you find answers. This covers everything before the standardization of C++.

  • Ruminations on C++ - (Andrew Koenig and Barbara Moo) [Review]

  • Advanced C++ Programming Styles and Idioms (James Coplien) A predecessor of the pattern movement, it describes many C++-specific “idioms”. It's certainly a very good book and might still be worth a read if you can spare the time, but quite old and not up-to-date with current C++.

  • Large Scale C++ Software Design (John Lakos) Lakos explains techniques to manage very big C++ software projects. Certainly, a good read, if it only was up to date. It was written long before C++ 98 and misses on many features (e.g. namespaces) important for large-scale projects. If you need to work in a big C++ software project, you might want to read it, although you need to take more than a grain of salt with it. The first volume of a new edition is released in 2019.

  • Inside the C++ Object Model (Stanley Lippman) If you want to know how virtual member functions are commonly implemented and how base objects are commonly laid out in memory in a multi-inheritance scenario, and how all this affects performance, this is where you will find thorough discussions of such topics.

  • The Annotated C++ Reference Manual (Bjarne Stroustrup, Margaret A. Ellis) This book is quite outdated in the fact that it explores the 1989 C++ 2.0 version - Templates, exceptions, namespaces and new casts were not yet introduced. Saying that however, this book goes through the entire C++ standard of the time explaining the rationale, the possible implementations, and features of the language. This is not a book to learn programming principles and patterns on C++, but to understand every aspect of the C++ language.

  • Thinking in C++ (Bruce Eckel, 2nd Edition, 2000). Two volumes; is a tutorial style free set of intro level books. Downloads: vol 1, vol 2. Unfortunately they're marred by a number of trivial errors (e.g. maintaining that temporaries are automatically const), with no official errata list. A partial 3rd party errata list is available at http://www.computersciencelab.com/Eckel.htm, but it is apparently not maintained.

  • Scientific and Engineering C++: An Introduction to Advanced Techniques and Examples (John Barton and Lee Nackman) It is a comprehensive and very detailed book that tried to explain and make use of all the features available in C++, in the context of numerical methods. It introduced at the time several new techniques, such as the Curiously Recurring Template Pattern (CRTP, also called Barton-Nackman trick). It pioneered several techniques such as dimensional analysis and automatic differentiation. It came with a lot of compilable and useful code, ranging from an expression parser to a Lapack wrapper. The code is still available online. Unfortunately, the books have become somewhat outdated in the style and C++ features, however, it was an incredible tour-de-force at the time (1994, pre-STL). The chapters on dynamics inheritance are a bit complicated to understand and not very useful. An updated version of this classic book that includes move semantics and the lessons learned from the STL would be very nice.

ActiveRecord find and only return selected columns

pluck(column_name)

This method is designed to perform select by a single column as direct SQL query Returns Array with values of the specified column name The values has same data type as column.

Examples:

Person.pluck(:id) # SELECT people.id FROM people
Person.uniq.pluck(:role) # SELECT DISTINCT role FROM people
Person.where(:confirmed => true).limit(5).pluck(:id)

see http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Calculations.html#method-i-pluck

Its introduced rails 3.2 onwards and accepts only single column. In rails 4, it accepts multiple columns

Vagrant ssh authentication failure

Just for those people that have been idiots like me, or have had something odd happen to their vagrant machine. This error can also occur when you changed the permissions of the vagrant user's home directory (deliberately or by accident).

You can log in instead (as described in other posts) using the password ('vagrant') and then run the following command to fix the permissions.

sudo chown -R vagrant:vagrant /home/vagrant

Then you should be able to log in again without entering the password.

TL;DR: The permissions on your vagrant home folder are wrong.

python time + timedelta equivalent

Workaround:

t = time()
t2 = time(t.hour+1, t.minute, t.second, t.microsecond)

You can also omit the microseconds, if you don't need that much precision.

Creating a SearchView that looks like the material design guidelines

I know its a old thread but still posting the library I just made. Hope this might help someone.

How to hide a div from code (c#)

Try this. Your markup:

<div id="MyId" runat="server">some content</div>

.. and in aspx.cs file:

protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
    if (Session["someSessionVal"].ToString() == "some value")
    {
        MyId.Visible = true;
    }
    else
    {
        MyId.Visible = false;

How to check if a radiobutton is checked in a radiogroup in Android?

Use the isChecked() function for every radioButton you have to check.

RadioButton maleRadioButton, femaleRadioButton;

maleRadioButton = (RadioButton) findViewById(R.id.maleRadioButton);
femaleRadioButton = (RadioButton) findViewById(R.id.femaleRadioButton);

Then use the result for your if/else case consideration.

if (maleRadioButton.isChecked() || femaleRadioButton.isChecked()) {
     Log.d("QAOD", "Gender is Selected");
} else {
    Toast.makeText(getApplicationContext(), "Please select Gender", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
    Log.d("QAOD", "Gender is Null");
}
