HTML5 video won't play in Chrome only

With some help from another person, we figured out it was an issue of ordering the source files within the HTML file. I learned that browsers accept the first usable format, and their seems to be an issue with the .m4v file, so I started with the .mp4, then .webm. Here's the order that works in Safari (even on my iPhone 5), Firefox, and Chrome:

Now, I'll have to re-check the encoding on the m4v file (perhaps an issue of Baseline vs Main, High, etc.).

The name does not exist in the namespace error in XAML

Try checking the References section, and see if there is a warning icon over the library reference you included:

If you see it then go to the Project -> Properties -> Application and make sure that both libraries are targeting the same version of the .NET framework.

As it would not cause memory leak and it animated the gif image own time line, you can try it.

Explain the different tiers of 2 tier & 3 tier architecture?

First, we must make a distinction between layers and tiers. Layers are the way to logically break code into components and tiers are the physical nodes to place the components on. This question explains it better: What's the difference between "Layers" and "Tiers"?

A two layer architecture is usually just a presentation layer and data store layer. These can be on 1 tier (1 machine) or 2 tiers (2 machines) to achieve better performance by distributing the work load.

A three layer architecture usually puts something between the presentation and data store layers such as a business logic layer or service layer. Again, you can put this into 1,2, or 3 tiers depending on how much money you have for hardware and how much load you expect.

Putting multiple machines in a tier will help with the robustness of the system by providing redundancy.

Change Primary Key

Can I edit an iPad's host file?

I know it's been a while this has been posted, but with iOS 7.1, a few things have changed.

So far, if you are developing an App, you MUST have a valid SSL certificate recognized by Apple, otherwise you will get an error message on you iDevice. No more self-signed certificates. See here a list:

Additionally, if you are here, it means that you are trying to make you iDevice resolve a name (to your https server), on a test or development environment.

Instead of using squid, which is a great application, you could simply run a very basic DNS server like dnsmasq. It will use your hosts file as a first line of name resolution, so, you can basically fool your iDevice there, saying that www.blah.com is 192.168.10.10.

The configuration file is as simple as 3 to 4 lines, and you can even configure its internal DHCP server if you want.

Here is mine:

no-dhcp-interface=eth0

local=/localnet/

Of course you have to configure networking on your iDevice to use that DNS (192.168.10.35 in my case), or just start using DHCP from that server anyway, after properly configured.

Additionally, if dnsmasq cannot resolve the name internally, it uses your regular DNS server (like 8.8.8.8) to resolve it for you. VERY simple, elegant, and solved my problems with iDevice App installation in-house.

By the way, solves many name resolution problems with regular macs (OS X) as well.

Now, my rant: bloody Apple. Making a device safe should not include castrating the operating system or the developers.

Secure hash and salt for PHP passwords

SHA1 and a salt should suffice (depending, naturally, on whether you are coding something for Fort Knox or a login system for your shopping list) for the foreseeable future. If SHA1 isn't good enough for you, use SHA256.

The idea of a salt is to throw the hashing results off balance, so to say. It is known, for example, that the MD5-hash of an empty string is d41d8cd98f00b204e9800998ecf8427e. So, if someone with good enough a memory would see that hash and know that it's the hash of an empty string. But if the string is salted (say, with the string "MY_PERSONAL_SALT"), the hash for the 'empty string' (i.e. "MY_PERSONAL_SALT") becomes aeac2612626724592271634fb14d3ea6, hence non-obvious to backtrace. What I'm trying to say, that it's better to use any salt, than not to. Therefore, it's not too much of an importance to know which salt to use.

There are actually websites that do just this - you can feed it a (md5) hash, and it spits out a known plaintext that generates that particular hash. If you would get access to a database that stores plain md5-hashes, it would be trivial for you to enter the hash for the admin to such a service, and log in. But, if the passwords were salted, such a service would become ineffective.

Also, double-hashing is generally regarded as bad method, because it diminishes the result space. All popular hashes are fixed-length. Thus, you can have only a finite values of this fixed length, and the results become less varied. This could be regarded as another form of salting, but I wouldn't recommend it.

In my opinion you should not load and use plugins you don't have to. This particular jQuery plugin doesn't give you anything since directly using the JavaScript sessionStorage object is exactly the same level of complexity. Nor, does the plugin provide some easier way to interact with other jQuery functionality. In addition the practice of using a plugin discourages a deep understanding of how something works. sessionStorage should be used only if its understood. If its understood, then using the jQuery plugin is actually MORE effort.

Calling conventions defines how parameters are passed in the registers when calling or being called by other program. And the best source of these convention is in the form of ABI standards defined for each these hardware. For ease of compilation, the same ABI is also used by userspace and kernel program. Linux/Freebsd follow the same ABI for x86-64 and another set for 32-bit. But x86-64 ABI for Windows is different from Linux/FreeBSD. And generally ABI does not differentiate system call vs normal "functions calls". Checking for NULL pointer in C/C++

Most compilers I've used will at least warn on the if assignment without further syntax sugar, so I don't buy that argument. That said, I've used both professionally and have no preference for either. The == NULL is definitely clearer though in my opinion.

Every time you face this error its probably because of a memory leak or difference between how Node <= 10 and Node > 10 manage memory. Usually just increasing the memory allocated to Node will allow your program to run but may not actually solve the real problem and the memory used by the node process could still exceed the new memory you allocate. I'd advise profiling memory usage in your node process when it starts running or updating to node > 10.

What worked for me was to create a new report from scratch.

This done and the new report working, I will compare the 2 .rdl files in Visual Studio. These are in XML format and I am hoping a quick WindDiff or something would reveal what the issue was.

An initial look shows there are 700 lines of code or a bit more difference between both files, with the larger of the 2 being the faulty file. A cursory look at the TablixHeader tags didn't reveal anything obvious.

But in my case it was a corrupted .rdl file. This was originally copied from a working report so in the process of removing what wasn't re-used, this could have corrupted it. However, other reports where this same process was done, the headers could repeat when the correct settings were made in Properties.

Hope this helps. If you've got a complex report, this isn't the quick fix but it works.

Perhaps comparing known good XML files to faulty ones on your end would make a good forum post. I'll be trying that on my end.

Memory errors and list limits?

First off, see How Big can a Python Array Get? and Numpy, problem with long arrays

Second, the only real limit comes from the amount of memory you have and how your system stores memory references. There is no per-list limit, so Python will go until it runs out of memory. Two possibilities:

  1. If you are running on an older OS or one that forces processes to use a limited amount of memory, you may need to increase the amount of memory the Python process has access to.
  2. Break the list apart using chunking. For example, do the first 1000 elements of the list, pickle and save them to disk, and then do the next 1000. To work with them, unpickle one chunk at a time so that you don't run out of memory. This is essentially the same technique that databases use to work with more data than will fit in RAM.

if you inherited this code, it could be that the dependencies and versions were locked and you have a ./npm-shrinkwrap.json file.

if your dependency is not listed in that file, it will never get installed with the npm install command.

you will need to manually install the packages and then run npm shrinkwrap to update the shrinkwrap file.

Can I update a component's props in React.js?

A component cannot update its own props unless they are arrays or objects (having a component update its own props even if possible is an anti-pattern), but can update its state and the props of its children.

For instance, a Dashboard has a speed field in its state, and passes it to a Gauge child thats displays this speed. Its render method is just return <Gauge speed={this.state.speed} />. When the Dashboard calls this.setState({speed: this.state.speed + 1}), the Gauge is re-rendered with the new value for speed.

Just before this happens, Gauge's componentWillReceiveProps is called, so that the Gauge has a chance to compare the new value to the old one.

Consider you are designing a simple function, which gets an object of type Bird and calls its walk() method. There are two approaches you can think of:

  1. This is my function, and I must be sure that it only accepts the Bird, or the code will not compile. If anyone wants to use my function, they must be aware that I only accept Birds
  2. My function gets any objects and I just call the object's walk() method. So, if the object can walk() it is correct, if it can't my function will fail. So here it is not important the object is a Bird or anything else, it is important that it can walk() (This is duck typing)

It must be considered that the duck typing may be useful in some cases, for example Python uses duck typing a lot.

Understanding Popen.communicate

.communicate() writes input (there is no input in this case so it just closes subprocess' stdin to indicate to the subprocess that there is no more input), reads all output, and waits for the subprocess to exit.

The exception EOFError is raised in the child process by raw_input() (it expected data but got EOF (no data)).

p.stdout.read() hangs forever because it tries to read all output from the child at the same time as the child waits for input (raw_input()) that causes a deadlock.

To avoid the deadlock you need to read/write asynchronously (e.g., by using threads or select) or to know exactly when and how much to read/write, for example:

bufsize=1 makes the pipes line-buffered on the parent side.

In Java 8, Lambda expressions were introduced to make this even easier! Instead of creating a Comparator() object with all of it's scaffolding, you can simplify it as follows: (Using your object as an example)

or even shorter:

That one statement is equivalent to the following:

Think of Lambda expressions as only requiring you to put in the relevant parts of the code: the method signature and what gets returned.

Another part of your question was how to compare against multiple fields. To do that with Lambda expressions, you can use the .thenComparing() function to effectively combine two comparisons into one:

One last note: It is easy to compare 'long' or 'int' primitives, you can just subtract one from the other. If you are comparing objects ('Long' or 'String'), I suggest you use their built-in comparison. Example:

I have two plots side by side and would like to adjust tick labels separately.

The above solutions were close however they were not working out for me. I found my solution from this matplotlib page.

ax.xaxis.set_tick_params(labelsize=20)

This did the trick and was straight to the point. For my use case, it was the plot on the right that needed to be adjusted. For the plot on the left since I was creating new tick labels I was able to adjust the font in the same process as seting the labels.

ie

ax1.set_xticklabels(ax1_x, fontsize=15)
ax1.set_yticklabels(ax1_y, fontsize=15)

thus I used for the right plot,

ax2.xaxis.set_tick_params(labelsize=24)
ax2.yaxis.set_tick_params(labelsize=24)

A minor subtlety... I know... but I hope this helps someone :)

What is object slicing?

When you use a RecyclerView, you need to specify a LayoutManager that is responsible for laying out each item in the view. The LinearLayoutManager allows you to specify an orientation, just like a normal LinearLayout would.

CSS Classes & SubClasses

Following on from kR105's reply above:

My problem was similar to that of the OP (Original Poster), only occurred outside a table, so the subclasses were not called from within the scope of the parent class (the table), but outside of it, so I had to ADD selectors, as kR105 mentioned.

Here was the problem: I had two boxes (divs), each with the same border-radius (HTML5), padding and margin, but needed to make them different colors. Rather than repeat those 3 parameters for each color class, I wanted a "superclass" to contain border-radius/padding/margin, then just individual "subclasses" to express their differences (double quotes around each as they're not really subclasses - see my later post). Here's how it worked out:

Java, "Variable name" cannot be resolved to a variable

I've noticed bizarre behavior with Eclipse version 4.2.1 delivering me this error:

String cannot be resolved to a variable

With this Java code:

if (true)
    String my_variable = "somevalue";
    System.out.println("foobar");

You would think this code is very straight forward, the conditional is true, we set my_variable to somevalue. And it should print foobar. Right?

Wrong, you get the above mentioned compile time error. Eclipse is trying to prevent you from making a mistake by assuming that both statements are within the if statement.

If you put braces around the conditional block like this:

if (true){
    String my_variable = "somevalue"; }
    System.out.println("foobar");

Then it compiles and runs fine. Apparently poorly bracketed conditionals are fair game for generating compile time errors now.

How do I change the default library path for R packages

I was struggling for a while with this as my work computer (with Windows 10) created the default user library on a network drive, which would slow down R and RStudio to an unusable state.

In case this helps someone, this is the easiest way I found, without requiring admin rights:

  • make sure the directory you want to install your packages into exists. If you want to respect the convention, use: C:\Users\username\R\win-library\rversion (for example, something like: C:\Users\janebloggs\R\win-library\3.6)
  • create a .Renviron file in your home directory (which might be on the network drive?), and in it, write one single line that defines the R_LIBS_USER variable to be your custom path:

R_LIBS_USER=C:\Users\janebloggs\R\win-library\3.6

(feel free to add comments too, with lines starting with #)

If a .Renviron file exists, R will read it at startup and use the variables as they are defined in there, before running the code in the .Rprofile. You can read about it in help(Startup).

Now it should be persistent between sessions!

You have no control over the user moving the orientation however you can at least message them. This example will hide the wrapper if in portrait mode and show the warning message and then hide the warning message in landscape mode and show the portrait.

How do I improve ASP.NET MVC application performance?

Just wanted to add my 2 cents. The MOST effective way to optimize the URL route generation in an MVC application is... not generate them at all.

Most of us more or less know how URLs are generated in our apps anyway, so simply using static Url.Content("~/Blahblah") instead of Url.Action() or Url.RouteUrl() where possible, beats all other methods by almost 20 times and even more.

PS. I've ran a benchmark of couple of thousand iterations and posted results on my blog if interested.

C# using streams

I wouldn't call those different kind of streams. The Stream class have CanRead and CanWrite properties that tell you if the particular stream can be read from and written to.

The major difference between different stream classes (such as MemoryStream vs FileStream) is the backing store - where the data is read from or where it's written to. It's kind of obvious from the name. A MemoryStream stores the data in memory only, a FileStream is backed by a file on disk, a NetworkStream reads data from the network and so on.

How do I save a String to a text file using Java?

If you're simply outputting text, rather than any binary data, the following will work:

PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter("filename.txt");

Then, write your String to it, just like you would to any output stream:

out.println(text);

You'll need exception handling, as ever. Be sure to call out.close() when you've finished writing.

If you are using Java 7 or later, you can use the "try-with-resources statement" which will automatically close your PrintStream when you are done with it (ie exit the block) like so:

You need to use DateTime.ParseExact with format "dd/MM/yyyy"

Its safer if you use d/M/yyyy for the format, since that will handle both single digit and double digits day/month. But that really depends if you are expecting single/double digit values.


Your date format day/Month/Year might be an acceptable date format for some cultures. For example for Canadian Culture en-CA DateTime.Parse would work like:

DateTime dt = DateTime.Parse("24/01/2013", new CultureInfo("en-CA"));

Or

System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.CurrentCulture = new CultureInfo("en-CA");

Both the above lines would work because the the string's format is acceptable for en-CA culture. Since you are not supplying any culture to your DateTime.Parse call, your current culture is used for parsing which doesn't support the date format. Read more about it at DateTime.Parse.

Raw SQL Query without DbSet - Entity Framework Core

In EF Core you no longer can execute "free" raw sql. You are required to define a POCO class and a DbSet for that class. In your case you will need to define Rank:

What is the JSF resource library for and how should it be used?

Actually, all of those examples on the web wherein the common content/file type like "js", "css", "img", etc is been used as library name are misleading.

Real world examples

To start, let's look at how existing JSF implementations like Mojarra and MyFaces and JSF component libraries like PrimeFaces and OmniFaces use it. No one of them use resource libraries this way. They use it (under the covers, by @ResourceDependency or UIViewRoot#addComponentResource()) the following way:

Easier identifying

This way it's so much easier to specify and distinguish where those resources belong to and/or are coming from. Imagine that you happen to have a primefaces.css resource in your own webapp wherein you're overriding/finetuning some default CSS of PrimeFaces; if PrimeFaces didn't use a library name for its own primefaces.css, then the PrimeFaces own one wouldn't be loaded, but instead the webapp-supplied one, which would break the look'n'feel.

Also, when you're using a custom ResourceHandler, you can also apply more finer grained control over resources coming from a specific library when library is used the right way. If all component libraries would have used "js" for all their JS files, how would the ResourceHandler ever distinguish if it's coming from a specific component library? Examples are OmniFaces CombinedResourceHandler and GraphicResourceHandler; check the createResource() method wherein the library is checked before delegating to next resource handler in chain. This way they know when to create CombinedResource or GraphicResource for the purpose.

Noted should be that RichFaces did it wrong. It didn't use any library at all and homebrewed another resource handling layer over it and it's therefore impossible to programmatically identify RichFaces resources. That's exactly the reason why OmniFaces CombinedResourceHander had to introduce a reflection-based hack in order to get it to work anyway with RichFaces resources.

Your own webapp

Your own webapp does not necessarily need a resource library. You'd best just omit it.

Another main advantage is that you can apply resource library versioning the right way on resources provided by your own webapp (this doesn't work for resources embedded in a JAR). This will force the webbrowser to request the resource straight from the server instead of showing the one with the same name from the cache, when the URL with the changed parameter is been requested for the first time. This way the endusers aren't required to do a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 and so on) when they need to retrieve the updated CSS/JS resource.

Is's better because getOne(ID id) gets you only a reference (proxy) object and does not fetch it from the DB. In comparsion when you call find() like in @Tanjim Rahmans answer spring data JPA will do an SQL SELECT to physically fetch the entity from the DB, which you dont need, when you are just updating.

When I had to solve this problem, I created a hard-coded data dictionary to map between numbers and their associated words. For example, the following might represent a few entries in the dictionary:

{30, "thirty"}

You really only need to worry about mapping numbers in the 10^0 (1,2,3, etc.) and 10^1 (10,20,30) positions because once you get to 100, you simply have to know when to use words like hundred, thousand, million, etc. in combination with your map. For example, when you have a number like 3,240,123, you get: three million two hundred forty thousand one hundred twenty three.

After you build your map, you need to work through each digit in your number and figure out the appropriate nomenclature to go with it.

I have added this answer only because the problem is explained based on more complex data pattern and I found it hard to understand here.

I created a fairly simple application. This error occurred inside Edit POST action. The action accepted ViewModel as an input parameter. The reason for using the ViewModel was to make some calculation before the record was saved.

Once the action passed through validation such as if(ModelState.IsValid), my wrongdoing was to project values from ViewModel into a completely new instance of Entity. I thought I'd have to create a new instance to store updated data and then saved such instance.

What I had realised later was that I had to read the record from database:

and updated this object. Everything works now.

I think what Veverke is trying to say is that you could easily use the delete keyword on an object to achieve the same effect.

I think you're confused by the terminology; properties are components of the object that you can use as named indices (if you want to think of it that way).

Try something like this:

Then, you could just do this:

delete obj["bob"];

The structure of the object would then be this:

You're getting a linker error, so your extern is working (the compiler compiled a.c without a problem), but when it went to link the object files together at the end it couldn't resolve your extern -- void doSomething(int); wasn't actually found anywhere. Did you mess up the extern? Make sure there's actually a doSomething defined in b.c that takes an int and returns void, and make sure you remembered to include b.c in your file list (i.e. you're doing something like gcc a.c b.c, not just gcc a.c)

In most project types, your async "up" and "down" will end at an async void event handler or returning a Task to your framework.

However, Console apps do not support this.

You can either just do a Wait on the returned task:
