Make div stay at bottom of page's content all the time even when there are scrollbars

I realise it says not to use this for 'responding to other answers' but unfortunately I don't have enough rep to add a comment onto the appropriate answer (!) but ...

If you are having problems in asp.net with the answer from 'My Head Hurts' - you need to add 'height : 100%' to the main generated FORM tag as well as HTML and BODY tags in order for this to work.

Check if a path represents a file or a folder

Please stick to the nio API to perform these checks

import java.nio.file.*;

static Boolean isDir(Path path) {
  if (path == null || !Files.exists(path)) return false;
  else return Files.isDirectory(path);
}

Does --disable-web-security Work In Chrome Anymore?

Check your windows task manager and make sure you kill all chrome processes before running the command.

Vertically center text in a 100% height div?

I disagree, here's a JS free solution, which works:

<html style="height: 100%;">
    <body style="vertical-align: middle; margin: 0px; height: 100%;">
        <div style="height: 100%; width: 100%; display: table; background-color: #ccc;">
            <div style="display: table-cell; width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;">
                <div style="height: 300px; width: 600px; background-color: wheat; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;">A</div>
            </div>
        </div>
    </body>
</html>

dictionary update sequence element #0 has length 3; 2 is required

This error raised up because you trying to update dict object by using a wrong sequence (list or tuple) structure.

cash_id.create(cr, uid, lines,context=None) trying to convert lines into dict object:

(0, 0, {
    'name': l.name,
    'date': l.date,
    'amount': l.amount,
    'type': l.type,
    'statement_id': exp.statement_id.id,
    'account_id': l.account_id.id,
    'account_analytic_id': l.analytic_account_id.id,
    'ref': l.ref,
    'note': l.note,
    'company_id': l.company_id.id
})

Remove the second zero from this tuple to properly convert it into a dict object.

To test it your self, try this into python shell:

>>> l=[(0,0,{'h':88})]
>>> a={}
>>> a.update(l)

Traceback (most recent call last):

How can I declare a global variable in Angular 2 / Typescript?

Create Globals class in app/globals.ts:

import { Injectable } from '@angular/core';

Injectable()
export class Globals{
    VAR1 = 'value1';
    VAR2 = 'value2';
}

In your component:

import { Globals } from './globals';

@Component({
    selector: 'my-app',
    providers: [ Globals ],
    template: `<h1>My Component {{globals.VAR1}}<h1/>`
})
export class AppComponent {
    constructor(private globals: Globals){
    }
}

Note: You can add Globals service provider directly to the module instead of the component, and you will not need to add as a provider to every component in that module.

@NgModule({
    imports: [...],
    declarations: [...],
    providers: [ Globals ],
    bootstrap: [ AppComponent ]
})
export class AppModule {
}

Add Variables to Tuple

In Python 3, you can use * to create a new tuple of elements from the original tuple along with the new element.

>>> tuple1 = ("foo", "bar")
>>> tuple2 = (*tuple1, "baz")
>>> tuple2
('foo', 'bar', 'baz')

The byte code is almost the same as tuple1 + ("baz",)

Python 3.7.5 (default, Oct 22 2019, 10:35:10)
[Clang 10.0.1 (clang-1001.0.46.4)] on darwin
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> def f():
...     tuple1 = ("foo", "bar")
...     tuple2 = (*tuple1, "baz")
...     return tuple2
...
>>> def g():
...     tuple1 = ("foo", "bar")
...     tuple2 = tuple1 + ("baz",)
...     return tuple2
...
>>> from dis import dis
>>> dis(f)
  2           0 LOAD_CONST               1 (('foo', 'bar'))
              2 STORE_FAST               0 (tuple1)

  3           4 LOAD_FAST                0 (tuple1)
              6 LOAD_CONST               3 (('baz',))
              8 BUILD_TUPLE_UNPACK       2
             10 STORE_FAST               1 (tuple2)

  4          12 LOAD_FAST                1 (tuple2)
             14 RETURN_VALUE
>>> dis(g)
  2           0 LOAD_CONST               1 (('foo', 'bar'))
              2 STORE_FAST               0 (tuple1)

  3           4 LOAD_FAST                0 (tuple1)
              6 LOAD_CONST               2 (('baz',))
              8 BINARY_ADD
             10 STORE_FAST               1 (tuple2)

  4          12 LOAD_FAST                1 (tuple2)
             14 RETURN_VALUE

The only difference is BUILD_TUPLE_UNPACK vs BINARY_ADD. The exact performance depends on the Python interpreter implementation, but it's natural to implement BUILD_TUPLE_UNPACK faster than BINARY_ADD because BINARY_ADD is a polymorphic operator, requiring additional type calculation and implicit conversion.

FtpWebRequest Download File

I know this is an old Post but I am adding here for future reference. Here is a solution that I found:

    private void DownloadFileFTP()
    {
        string inputfilepath = @"C:\Temp\FileName.exe";
        string ftphost = "xxx.xx.x.xxx";
        string ftpfilepath = "/Updater/Dir1/FileName.exe";

        string ftpfullpath = "ftp://" + ftphost + ftpfilepath;

        using (WebClient request = new WebClient())
        {
            request.Credentials = new NetworkCredential("UserName", "P@55w0rd");
            byte[] fileData = request.DownloadData(ftpfullpath);

            using (FileStream file = File.Create(inputfilepath))
            {
                file.Write(fileData, 0, fileData.Length);
                file.Close();
            }
            MessageBox.Show("Download Complete");
        }
    }

How do I edit a file after I shell to a Docker container?

I use "docker run" (not "docker exec"), and I'm in a restricted zone where we cannot install an editor. But I have an editor on the Docker host.

My workaround is: Bind mount a volume from the Docker host to the container (https://docs.docker.com/engine/reference/run/#/volume-shared-filesystems), and edit the file outside the container. It looks like this:

docker run -v /outside/dir:/container/dir

This is mostly for experimenting, and later I'd change the file when building the image.

How to convert .pfx file to keystore with private key?

Using JDK 1.6 or later

It has been pointed out by Justin in the comments below that keytool alone is capable of doing this using the following command (although only in JDK 1.6 and later):

keytool -importkeystore -srckeystore mypfxfile.pfx -srcstoretype pkcs12
-destkeystore clientcert.jks -deststoretype JKS

Using JDK 1.5 or below

OpenSSL can do it all. This answer on JGuru is the best method that I've found so far.

Firstly make sure that you have OpenSSL installed. Many operating systems already have it installed as I found with Mac OS X.

The following two commands convert the pfx file to a format that can be opened as a Java PKCS12 key store:

openssl pkcs12 -in mypfxfile.pfx -out mypemfile.pem
openssl pkcs12 -export -in mypemfile.pem -out mykeystore.p12 -name "MyCert"

NOTE that the name provided in the second command is the alias of your key in the new key store.

You can verify the contents of the key store using the Java keytool utility with the following command:

keytool -v -list -keystore mykeystore.p12 -storetype pkcs12

Finally if you need to you can convert this to a JKS key store by importing the key store created above into a new key store:

keytool -importkeystore -srckeystore mykeystore.p12 -destkeystore clientcert.jks -srcstoretype pkcs12 -deststoretype JKS

Which is a better way to check if an array has more than one element?

Use this

if (sizeof($arr) > 1) {
     ....
}

Or

if (count($arr) > 1) {
     ....
}

sizeof() is an alias for count(), they work the same.

Edit: Answering the second part of the question: The two lines of codes in the question are not alternative methods, they perform different functions. The first checks if the value at $arr['1'] is set, while the second returns the number of elements in the array.

How would I check a string for a certain letter in Python?

in keyword allows you to loop over a collection and check if there is a member in the collection that is equal to the element.

In this case string is nothing but a list of characters:

dog = "xdasds"
if "x" in dog:
     print "Yes!"

You can check a substring too:

>>> 'x' in "xdasds"
True
>>> 'xd' in "xdasds"
True
>>>
>>>
>>> 'xa' in "xdasds"
False

Think collection:

>>> 'x' in ['x', 'd', 'a', 's', 'd', 's']
True
>>>

You can also test the set membership over user defined classes.

For user-defined classes which define the __contains__ method, x in y is true if and only if y.__contains__(x) is true.

iterrows pandas get next rows value

I would use shift() function as follows:

df['value_1'] = df.value.shift(-1)
[print(x) for x in df.T.unstack().dropna(how = 'any').values];

which produces

AA
BB
BB
CC
CC

This is how the code above works:

Step 1) Use shift function

df['value_1'] = df.value.shift(-1)
print(df)

produces

value value_1
0    AA      BB
1    BB      CC
2    CC     NaN

step 2) Transpose:

df = df.T
print(df)

produces:

          0   1    2
value    AA  BB   CC
value_1  BB  CC  NaN

Step 3) Unstack:

df = df.unstack()
print(df)

produces:

0  value       AA
   value_1     BB
1  value       BB
   value_1     CC
2  value       CC
   value_1    NaN
dtype: object

Step 4) Drop NaN values

df = df.dropna(how = 'any')
print(df)

produces:

0  value      AA
   value_1    BB
1  value      BB
   value_1    CC
2  value      CC
dtype: object

Step 5) Return a Numpy representation of the DataFrame, and print value by value:

df = df.values
[print(x) for x in df];

produces:

AA
BB
BB
CC
CC

How can I check the extension of a file?

Trim last character from a string

Slightly modified version of @Damian Leszczynski - Vash that will make sure that only a specific character will be removed.

public static class StringExtensions

    public static string TrimLastCharacter(this string str, char character)
    {
        if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(str) || str[str.Length - 1] != character)

            return str;
        }
        return str.Substring(0, str.Length - 1);
    }
}

Get the index of a certain value in an array in PHP

// or considering your array structure:

$array = array(
  'string1' => array('a' => '', 'b' => '', 'c' => ''),
  'string2' => array('a' => '', 'b' => '', 'c' => ''),
  'string3' => array('a' => '', 'b' => '', 'c' => ''),
);

// you could just

function findIndexOfKey($key_to_index,$array){
  return array_search($key_to_index,array_keys($array));
}

// executed

print "\r\n//-- Method 1 --//\r\n";
print '#index of: string1 = '.findIndexofKey('string1',$array)."\r\n";
print '#index of: string2 = '.findIndexofKey('string2',$array)."\r\n";
print '#index of: string3 = '.findIndexofKey('string3',$array)."\r\n";

// alternatively

print "\r\n//-- Method 2 --//\r\n";
print '#index of: string1 = '.array_search('string1',array_keys($array))."\r\n";
print '#index of: string2 = '.array_search('string2',array_keys($array))."\r\n";
print '#index of: string3 = '.array_search('string3',array_keys($array))."\r\n";

// recursersively

print "\r\n//-- Method 3 --//\r\n";
foreach(array_keys($array) as $key => $value){
  print '#index of: '.$value.' = '.$key."\r\n";
}

// outputs

//-- Method 1 --//
#index of: string1 = 0
#index of: string2 = 1
#index of: string3 = 2

//-- Method 2 --//
#index of: string1 = 0
#index of: string2 = 1
#index of: string3 = 2

//-- Method 3 --//
#index of: string1 = 0
#index of: string2 = 1
#index of: string3 = 2

Float a div right, without impacting on design

If you don't want the image to affect the layout at all (and float on top of other content) you can apply the following CSS to the image:

position:absolute;
right:0;
top:0;

If you want it to float at the right of a particular parent section, you can add position: relative to that section.

javascript return true or return false when and how to use it?

returning true or false indicates that whether execution should continue or stop right there. So just an example

<input type="button" onclick="return func();" />

Now if func() is defined like this

function func()
{
 // do something
return false;
}

the click event will never get executed. On the contrary if return true is written then the click event will always be executed.

Removing cordova plugins from the project

You can do it with bash as well (after switching to your Cordova project directory):

How can I find the latitude and longitude from address?

The following code will work for google apiv2:

public void convertAddress() {
    if (address != null && !address.isEmpty()) {
        try {
            List<Address> addressList = geoCoder.getFromLocationName(address, 1);
            if (addressList != null && addressList.size() > 0) {
                double lat = addressList.get(0).getLatitude();
                double lng = addressList.get(0).getLongitude();
            }
        } catch (Exception e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        } // end catch
    } // end if
} // end convertAddress

Where address is the String (123 Testing Rd City State zip) you want to convert to LatLng.

How can I change my Cygwin home folder after installation?

I'd like to add a correction/update to the bit about $HOME taking precedence. The home directory in /etc/passwd takes precedence over everything.

I'm a long time Cygwin user and I just did a clean install of Windows 7 x64 and Cygwin V1.126. I was going nuts trying to figure out why every time I ran ssh I kept getting:

e:\>ssh foo.bar.com
Could not create directory '/home/dhaynes/.ssh'.
The authenticity of host 'foo.bar.com (10.66.19.19)' can't be established.
...

I add the HOME=c:\users\dhaynes definition in the Windows environment but still it kept trying to create '/home/dhaynes'. I tried every combo I could including setting HOME to /cygdrive/c/users/dhaynes. Googled for the error message, could not find anything, couldn't find anything on the cygwin site. I use cygwin from cmd.exe, not bash.exe but the problem was present in both.

I finally realized that the home directory in /etc/passwd was taking precedence over the $HOME environment variable. I simple re-ran 'mkpasswd -l >/etc/passwd' and that updated the home directory, now all is well with ssh.

That may be obvious to linux types with sysadmin experience but for those of us who primarily use Windows it's a bit obscure.

How to create a .gitignore file

I realize this question is focused on how to "create" the gitignore file, but in case someone is interested in a quick way to add contents to the file once it is created, here is my answer for those trying to "ignore" files that appear in their changes list.

  1. Make the changes to your code which generate unwanted changes in your repository.
  2. Go to GitHub Desktop and to your repository.
  3. Select all the changes and right click them.
  4. Add your changes to the gitignore file.

How to solve the system.data.sqlclient.sqlexception (0x80131904) error

You also need to change the DataSource of the connection string. KELVIN-PC is the name of your local machine and the sql server is running on the default instance.

If you are sure the the server is running as the default instance, you can always use . in the DataSource, eg.

connectionString="Data Source=.;Initial Catalog=LMS;User ID=sa;Password=temperament"

otherwise, you need to specify the name of the instance of the server,

connectionString="Data Source=.\INSTANCENAME;Initial Catalog=LMS;User ID=sa;Password=temperament"

Using TortoiseSVN via the command line

To use command support you should follow this steps:

  1. Define Path in Environment Variables:

    • open 'System Properties';
    • on the tab 'Advanced' click on the 'Environment Variables' button
    • in the section 'System variables' select 'Path' option and click 'edit'
    • append variable value with the path to TortoiseProc.exe file, for example:

      C:\Program Files\TortoiseSVN\bin

  2. Since you have registered TortoiseProc, you can use it in according to TortoiseSVN documentation.

    Examples:

    TortoiseProc.exe /command:commit /path:"c:\svn_wc\file1.txt*c:\svn_wc\file2.txt" /logmsg:"test log message" /closeonend:0

    TortoiseProc.exe /command:update /path:"c:\svn_wc\" /closeonend:0

    TortoiseProc.exe /command:log /path:"c:\svn_wc\file1.txt" /startrev:50 /endrev:60 /closeonend:0

P.S. To use friendly name like 'svn' instead of 'TortoiseProc', place 'svn.bat' file in the directory of 'TortoiseProc.exe'. There is an example of svn.bat:

TortoiseProc.exe %1 %2 %3

How to convert a column number (e.g. 127) into an Excel column (e.g. AA)

Saw one other VBA answer - this can be done in with a 1 line UDF:

Function GetColLetter(ByVal colID As Integer) As String
    GetColLetter = Split(Cells(1, colID).Address, "$")(1)
End Function

Turning Sonar off for certain code

I not be able to find squid number in sonar 5.6, with this annotation also works:

How to check if a process is running via a batch script

The answer provided by Matt Lacey works for Windows XP. However, in Windows Server 2003 the line

 tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq notepad.exe" /FO CSV > search.log

returns

INFO: No tasks are running which match the specified criteria.

which is then read as the process is running.

I don't have a heap of batch scripting experience, so my soulution is to then search for the process name in the search.log file and pump the results into another file and search that for any output.

tasklist /FI "IMAGENAME eq notepad.exe" /FO CSV > search.log

FINDSTR notepad.exe search.log > found.log

FOR /F %%A IN (found.log) DO IF %%~zA EQU 0 GOTO end

start notepad.exe

:end

del search.log
del found.log

I hope this helps someone else.

How to prevent auto-closing of console after the execution of batch file

Add cmd.exe as a new line below the code you want to execute:

c:\Python27\python D:\code\simple_http_server.py

cmd.exe

Only variables should be passed by reference

Try this:

$parts = explode('.', $file_name);
$file_extension = end($parts);

The reason is that the argument for end is passed by reference, since end modifies the array by advancing its internal pointer to the final element. If you're not passing a variable in, there's nothing for a reference to point to.

See end in the PHP manual for more info.

How to use a servlet filter in Java to change an incoming servlet request url?

  1. Implement javax.servlet.Filter.
  2. In doFilter() method, cast the incoming ServletRequest to HttpServletRequest.
  3. Use HttpServletRequest#getRequestURI() to grab the path.
  4. Use straightforward java.lang.String methods like substring(), split(), concat() and so on to extract the part of interest and compose the new path.
  5. Use either ServletRequest#getRequestDispatcher() and then RequestDispatcher#forward() to forward the request/response to the new URL (server-side redirect, not reflected in browser address bar), or cast the incoming ServletResponse to HttpServletResponse and then HttpServletResponse#sendRedirect() to redirect the response to the new URL (client side redirect, reflected in browser address bar).
  6. Register the filter in web.xml on an url-pattern of /* or /Check_License/*, depending on the context path, or if you're on Servlet 3.0 already, use the @WebFilter annotation for that instead.

Don't forget to add a check in the code if the URL needs to be changed and if not, then just call FilterChain#doFilter(), else it will call itself in an infinite loop.

Alternatively you can also just use an existing 3rd party API to do all the work for you, such as Tuckey's UrlRewriteFilter which can be configured the way as you would do with Apache's mod_rewrite.

Pandas: sum DataFrame rows for given columns

The shortest and simpliest way here is to use

    df.eval('e = a + b + d')

Double.TryParse or Convert.ToDouble - which is faster and safer?

To start with, I'd use double.Parse rather than Convert.ToDouble in the first place.

As to whether you should use Parse or TryParse: can you proceed if there's bad input data, or is that a really exceptional condition? If it's exceptional, use Parse and let it blow up if the input is bad. If it's expected and can be cleanly handled, use TryParse.

PHP Change Array Keys

You could create a new array containing that array, so:

<?php
$array = array();
$array['name'] = $oldArray;
?>

What in layman's terms is a Recursive Function using PHP

Recursion used for Kaprekar's constant

function KaprekarsConstant($num, $count = 1) {
    $input = str_split($num);
    sort($input);

    $ascendingInput  = implode($input);
    $descendingInput = implode(array_reverse($input));

    $result = $ascendingInput > $descendingInput
        ? $ascendingInput - $descendingInput
        : $descendingInput - $ascendingInput;

    if ($result != 6174) {
        return KaprekarsConstant(sprintf('%04d', $result), $count + 1);
    }

    return $count;

}

The function keeps calling itself with the result of the calculation until it reaches Kaprekars constant, at which it will return the amount of times the calculations was made.

/edit For anyone that doesn't know Kaprekars Constant, it needs an input of 4 digits with at least two distinct digits.

PHP 7: Missing VCRUNTIME140.dll

I got same error and found that my Microsoft Visual C++ is 32 bit and Windows is 64 bit. I tried to install WAMP 7 32 bit and the problem was solved.

Maybe we need to install WAMP 32 bit if Visual Studio is 32 bit. And vice versa.

Concat scripts in order with Gulp

merge2 looks like the only working and maintained ordered stream merging tool at the moment.

Update 2020

The APIs are always changing, some libraries become unusable or contain vulnerabilities, or their dependencies contain vulnerabilities, that are not fixed for years. For text files manipulations you'd better use custom NodeJS scripts and popular libraries like globby and fs-extra along with other libraries without Gulp, Grunt, etc wrappers.

import globby from 'globby';
import fs from 'fs-extra';

async function bundleScripts() {
    const rootPaths = await globby('./source/js/*.js');
    const otherPaths = (await globby('./source/**/*.js'))
        .filter(f => !rootFiles.includes(f));
    const paths = rootPaths.concat(otherPaths);

    const files = Promise.all(
        paths.map(
            // Returns a Promise
            path => fs.readFile(path, {encoding: 'utf8'})
        )
    );

    let bundle = files.join('\n');
    bundle = uglify(bundle);
    bundle = whatever(bundle);
    bundle = bundle.replace(/\/\*.*?\*\//g, '');

    await fs.outputFile('./build/js/script.js', bundle, {encoding: 'utf8'});
}

bundleScripts.then(() => console.log('done');

How to get the MD5 hash of a file in C++?

md5.h also have MD5_* functions very useful for big file

#include <openssl/md5.h>
#include <fstream>
.......

std::ifstream file(filename, std::ifstream::binary);
MD5_CTX md5Context;
MD5_Init(&md5Context);
char buf[1024 * 16];
while (file.good()) {
    file.read(buf, sizeof(buf));
    MD5_Update(&md5Context, buf, file.gcount());
}
unsigned char result[MD5_DIGEST_LENGTH];
MD5_Final(result, &md5Context);

Very simple, isn`t it? Convertion to string also very simple:

#include <sstream>
#include <iomanip>
.......

std::stringstream md5string;
md5string << std::hex << std::uppercase << std::setfill('0');
for (const auto &byte: result)
    md5string << std::setw(2) << (int)byte;

return md5string.str();

Tree implementation in Java (root, parents and children)

import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;

public class Node<T> {
    private List<Node<T>> children = new ArrayList<Node<T>>();
    private Node<T> parent = null;
    private T data = null;

    public Node(T data) {
        this.data = data;
    }

    public Node(T data, Node<T> parent) {
        this.data = data;
        this.parent = parent;
    }

    public List<Node<T>> getChildren() {
        return children;
    }

    public void setParent(Node<T> parent) {
        parent.addChild(this);
        this.parent = parent;
    }

    public void addChild(T data) {
        Node<T> child = new Node<T>(data);
        child.setParent(this);
        this.children.add(child);
    }

    public void addChild(Node<T> child) {
        child.setParent(this);
        this.children.add(child);
    }

    public T getData() {
        return this.data;
    }

    public void setData(T data) {
        this.data = data;
    }

    public boolean isRoot() {
        return (this.parent == null);
    }

    public boolean isLeaf() {
        return this.children.size == 0;
    }

    public void removeParent() {
        this.parent = null;
    }
}

Example:

import java.util.List;

Node<String> parentNode = new Node<String>("Parent");
Node<String> childNode1 = new Node<String>("Child 1", parentNode);
Node<String> childNode2 = new Node<String>("Child 2");

childNode2.setParent(parentNode);

Node<String> grandchildNode = new Node<String>("Grandchild of parentNode. Child of childNode1", childNode1);
List<Node<String>> childrenNodes = parentNode.getChildren();

do-while loop in R

See ?Control or the R Language Definition:

> y=0
> while(y <5){ print( y<-y+1) }
[1] 1
[1] 2
[1] 3
[1] 4
[1] 5

So do_while does not exist as a separate construct in R, but you can fake it with:

repeat( { expressions}; if (! end_cond_expr ) {break} )

If you want to see the help page you cannot type ?while or ?repeat at the console but rather need to use ?'repeat' or ?'while'. All the "control-constructs" including if are on the same page and all need character quoting after the "?" so the interpreter doesn't see them as incomplete code and give you a continuation "+".

Make a dictionary with duplicate keys in Python

I just posted an answer to a question that was subequently closed as a duplicate of this one (for good reasons I think), but I'm surprised to see that my proposed solution is not included in any of the answers here.

Rather than using a defaultdict or messing around with membership tests or manual exception handling, you can easily append values onto lists within a dictionary using the setdefault method:

results = {} # use a normal dictionary for our output
for k, v in some_data: # the keys may be duplicates
    results.setdefault(k, []).append(v)   # magic happens here!

This is a lot like using a defaultdict, but you don't need a special data type. When you call setdefault, it checks to see if the first argument (the key) is already in the dictionary. If doesn't find anything, it assigns the second argument (the default value, an empty list in this case) as a new value for the key. If the key does exist, nothing special is done (the default goes unused). In either case though, the value (whether old or new) gets returned, so we can unconditionally call append on it, knowing it should always be a list.

Update one MySQL table with values from another

It depends what is a use of those tables, but you might consider putting trigger on original table on insert and update. When insert or update is done, update the second table based on only one item from the original table. It will be quicker.

Calculating a directory's size using Python?

Using pathlib I came up this one-liner to get the size of a folder:

sum(file.stat().st_size for file in Path(folder).rglob('*'))

And this is what I came up with for a nicely formatted output:

from pathlib import Path

def get_folder_size(folder):
    return ByteSize(sum(file.stat().st_size for file in Path(folder).rglob('*')))

class ByteSize(int):

    _kB = 1024
    _suffixes = 'B', 'kB', 'MB', 'GB', 'PB'

    def __new__(cls, *args, **kwargs):
        return super().__new__(cls, *args, **kwargs)

    def __init__(self, *args, **kwargs):
        self.bytes = self.B = int(self)
        self.kilobytes = self.kB = self / self._kB**1
        self.megabytes = self.MB = self / self._kB**2
        self.gigabytes = self.GB = self / self._kB**3
        self.petabytes = self.PB = self / self._kB**4
        *suffixes, last = self._suffixes
        suffix = next((
            suffix
            for suffix in suffixes
            if 1 < getattr(self, suffix) < self._kB
        ), last)
        self.readable = suffix, getattr(self, suffix)

        super().__init__()

    def __str__(self):
        return self.__format__('.2f')

    def __repr__(self):
        return '{}({})'.format(self.__class__.__name__, super().__repr__())

    def __format__(self, format_spec):
        suffix, val = self.readable
        return '{val:{fmt}} {suf}'.format(val=val, fmt=format_spec, suf=suffix)

    def __sub__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__sub__(other))

    def __add__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__add__(other))

    def __mul__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__mul__(other))

    def __rsub__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__sub__(other))

    def __radd__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__add__(other))

    def __rmul__(self, other):
        return self.__class__(super().__rmul__(other))

Usage:

>>> size = get_folder_size("c:/users/tdavis/downloads")
>>> print(size)
5.81 GB
>>> size.GB
5.810891855508089
>>> size.gigabytes
5.810891855508089
>>> size.PB
0.005674699077644618
>>> size.MB
5950.353260040283
>>> size
ByteSize(6239397620)

I also came across this question, which has some more compact and probably more performant strategies for printing file sizes.

ReferenceError: describe is not defined NodeJs

Assuming you are testing via mocha, you have to run your tests using the mocha command instead of the node executable.

So if you haven't already, make sure you do npm install mocha -g. Then just run mocha in your project's root directory.

How to send SMS in Java

TextMarks gives you access to its shared shortcode to send and receive text messages from your app via their API. Messages come from/to 41411 (instead of e.g. a random phone# and unlike e-mail gateways you have the full 160 chars to work with).

You can also tell people to text in your keyword(s) to 41411 to invoke various functionality in your app. There is a JAVA API client along with several other popular languages and very comprehensive documentation and technical support.

The 14 day free trial can be easily extended for developers who are still testing it out and building their apps.

How to check if an array element exists?

You can use the function array_key_exists to do that.

For example,

$a=array("a"=>"Dog","b"=>"Cat");
if (array_key_exists("a",$a))
  {
  echo "Key exists!";
  }
else
  {
  echo "Key does not exist!";
  }

How to merge two PDF files into one in Java?

A quick Google search returned this bug: "Bad file descriptor while saving a document w. imported PDFs".

What values can I pass to the event attribute of the f:ajax tag?

I just input some value that I knew was invalid and here is the output:

'whatToInput' is not a supported event for HtmlPanelGrid. Please specify one of these supported event names: click, dblclick, keydown, keypress, keyup, mousedown, mousemove, mouseout, mouseover, mouseup.

So values you can pass to event are

  • click
  • dblclick
  • keydown
  • mousedown
  • mousemove
  • mouseover
  • mouseup

Display a float with two decimal places in Python

f-string formatting:

This was new in Python 3.6 - the string is placed in quotation marks as usual, prepended with f'... in the same way you would r'... for a raw string. Then you place whatever you want to put within your string, variables, numbers, inside braces f'some string text with a {variable} or {number} within that text' - and Python evaluates as with previous string formatting methods, except that this method is much more readable.

>>> foobar = 3.141592
>>> print(f'My number is {foobar:.2f} - look at the nice rounding!')

My number is 3.14 - look at the nice rounding!

You can see in this example we format with decimal places in similar fashion to previous string formatting methods.

NB foobar can be an number, variable, or even an expression eg f'{3*my_func(3.14):02f}'.

Going forward, with new code I prefer f-strings over common %s or str.format() methods as f-strings can be far more readable, and are often much faster.

Is there a simple way to increment a datetime object one month in Python?

Question: Is there a simple way to do this in the current release of Python?

Answer: There is no simple (direct) way to do this in the current release of Python.

Reference: Please refer to docs.python.org/2/library/datetime.html, section 8.1.2. timedelta Objects. As we may understand from that, we cannot increment month directly since it is not a uniform time unit.

Plus: If you want first day -> first day and last day -> last day mapping you should handle that separately for different months.

ASP.NET MVC JsonResult Date Format

I have been working on a solution to this issue as none of the above answers really helped me. I am working with the jquery week calendar and needed my dates to have time zone information on the server and locally on the page. After quite a bit of digging around, I figured out a solution that may help others.

I am using asp.net 3.5, vs 2008, asp.net MVC 2, and jquery week calendar,

First, I am using a library written by Steven Levithan that helps with dealing with dates on the client side, Steven Levithan's date library. The isoUtcDateTime format is perfect for what I needed. In my jquery AJAX call I use the format function provided with the library with the isoUtcDateTime format and when the ajax call hits my action method, the datetime Kind is set to local and reflects the server time.

When I send dates to my page via AJAX, I send them as text strings by formatting the dates using "ddd, dd MMM yyyy HH':'mm':'ss 'GMT'zzzz". This format is easily converted client side using

var myDate = new Date(myReceivedDate);

Here is my complete solution minus Steve Levithan's source, which you can download:

Controller:

public class HomeController : Controller
{
    public const string DATE_FORMAT = "ddd, dd MMM yyyy HH':'mm':'ss 'GMT'zzzz";

    public ActionResult Index()
    {
        ViewData["Message"] = "Welcome to ASP.NET MVC!";

        return View();
    }

    public ActionResult About()
    {
        return View();
    }

    public JsonResult GetData()
    {
        DateTime myDate = DateTime.Now.ToLocalTime();

        return new JsonResult { Data = new { myDate = myDate.ToString(DATE_FORMAT) } };
    }

    public JsonResult ReceiveData(DateTime myDate)
    {
        return new JsonResult { Data = new { myDate = myDate.ToString(DATE_FORMAT) } };
    }
}

Javascript:

<script type="text/javascript">

function getData() {
    $.ajax({
        url: "/Home/GetData",
        type: "POST",
        cache: "false",
        dataType: "json",
        success: function(data) {
            alert(data.myDate);
            var newDate = cleanDate(data.myDate);
            alert(newDate);
            sendData(newDate);
        }
    });
}

function cleanDate(d) {
    if (typeof d == 'string') {
        return new Date(d) || Date.parse(d) || new Date(parseInt(d));
    }
    if (typeof d == 'number') {
        return new Date(d);
    }
    return d;
}

function sendData(newDate) {
    $.ajax({
        url: "/Home/ReceiveData",
        type: "POST",
        cache: "false",
        dataType: "json",
        data:
        {
            myDate: newDate.format("isoUtcDateTime")
        },
        success: function(data) {
            alert(data.myDate);
            var newDate = cleanDate(data.myDate);
            alert(newDate);
        }
    });
}

// bind myButton click event to call getData
$(document).ready(function() {
    $('input#myButton').bind('click', getData);
});
</script>

I hope this quick example helps out others in the same situation I was in. At this time it seems to work very well with the Microsoft JSON Serialization and keeps my dates correct across timezones.

Create PDF with Java

I prefer outputting my data into XML (using Castor, XStream or JAXB), then transforming it using a XSLT stylesheet into XSL-FO and render that with Apache FOP into PDF. Worked so far for 10-page reports and 400-page manuals. I found this more flexible and stylable than generating PDFs in code using iText.

What is the most efficient/quickest way to loop through rows in VBA (excel)?

EDIT Summary and reccomendations

Using a for each cell in range construct is not in itself slow. What is slow is repeated access to Excel in the loop (be it reading or writing cell values, format etc, inserting/deleting rows etc).

What is too slow depends entierly on your needs. A Sub that takes minutes to run might be OK if only used rarely, but another that takes 10s might be too slow if run frequently.

So, some general advice:

  1. keep it simple at first. If the result is too slow for your needs, then optimise
  2. focus on optimisation of the content of the loop
  3. don't just assume a loop is needed. There are sometime alternatives
  4. if you need to use cell values (a lot) inside the loop, load them into a variant array outside the loop.
  5. a good way to avoid complexity with inserts is to loop the range from the bottom up
    (for index = max to min step -1)
  6. if you can't do that and your 'insert a row here and there' is not too many, consider reloading the array after each insert
  7. If you need to access cell properties other than value, you are stuck with cell references
  8. To delete a number of rows consider building a range reference to a multi area range in the loop, then delete that range in one go after the loop

eg (not tested!)

Dim rngToDelete as range
for each rw in rng.rows
    if need to delete rw then

        if rngToDelete is nothing then
            set rngToDelete = rw
        else
            set rngToDelete = Union(rngToDelete, rw)
        end if

    endif
next
rngToDelete.EntireRow.Delete

Original post

Conventional wisdom says that looping through cells is bad and looping through a variant array is good. I too have been an advocate of this for some time. Your question got me thinking, so I did some short tests with suprising (to me anyway) results:

test data set: a simple list in cells A1 .. A1000000 (thats 1,000,000 rows)

Test case 1: loop an array

Dim v As Variant
Dim n As Long

T1 = GetTickCount
Set r = Range("$A$1", Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp)).Cells
v = r
For n = LBound(v, 1) To UBound(v, 1)
    'i = i + 1
    'i = r.Cells(n, 1).Value 'i + 1
Next
Debug.Print "Array Time = " & (GetTickCount - T1) / 1000#
Debug.Print "Array Count = " & Format(n, "#,###")

Result:

Array Time = 0.249 sec
Array Count = 1,000,001

Test Case 2: loop the range

T1 = GetTickCount
Set r = Range("$A$1", Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp)).Cells
For Each c In r
Next c
Debug.Print "Range Time = " & (GetTickCount - T1) / 1000#
Debug.Print "Range Count = " & Format(r.Cells.Count, "#,###")

Result:

Range Time = 0.296 sec
Range Count = 1,000,000

So,looping an array is faster but only by 19% - much less than I expected.

Test 3: loop an array with a cell reference

T1 = GetTickCount
Set r = Range("$A$1", Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp)).Cells
v = r
For n = LBound(v, 1) To UBound(v, 1)
    i = r.Cells(n, 1).Value
Next
Debug.Print "Array Time = " & (GetTickCount - T1) / 1000# & " sec"
Debug.Print "Array Count = " & Format(i, "#,###")

Result:

Array Time = 5.897 sec
Array Count = 1,000,000

Test case 4: loop range with a cell reference

T1 = GetTickCount
Set r = Range("$A$1", Cells(Rows.Count, "A").End(xlUp)).Cells
For Each c In r
    i = c.Value
Next c
Debug.Print "Range Time = " & (GetTickCount - T1) / 1000# & " sec"
Debug.Print "Range Count = " & Format(r.Cells.Count, "#,###")

Result:

Range Time = 2.356 sec
Range Count = 1,000,000

So event with a single simple cell reference, the loop is an order of magnitude slower, and whats more, the range loop is twice as fast!

So, conclusion is what matters most is what you do inside the loop, and if speed really matters, test all the options

FWIW, tested on Excel 2010 32 bit, Win7 64 bit All tests with

  • ScreenUpdating off,
  • Calulation manual,
  • Events disabled.

Conditional formatting based on another cell's value

One more example:

If you have Column from A to D, and need to highlight the whole line (e.g. from A to D) if B is "Complete", then you can do it following:

"Custom formula is":  =$B:$B="Completed"
Background Color:     red
Range:                A:D

Of course, you can change Range to A:T if you have more columns.

If B contains "Complete", use search as following:

"Custom formula is":  =search("Completed",$B:$B)
Background Color:     red
Range:                A:D

"unary operator expected" error in Bash if condition

Try assigning a value to $aug1 before use it in if[] statements; the error message will disappear afterwards.

How to create XML file with specific structure in Java

There is no need for any External libraries, the JRE System libraries provide all you need.

I am infering that you have a org.w3c.dom.Document object you would like to write to a file

To do that, you use a javax.xml.transform.Transformer:

import org.w3c.dom.Document
import javax.xml.transform.Transformer;
import javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory;
import javax.xml.transform.TransformerException;
import javax.xml.transform.TransformerConfigurationException;
import javax.xml.transform.dom.DOMSource;
import javax.xml.transform.stream.StreamResult;

public class XMLWriter {
    public static void writeDocumentToFile(Document document, File file) {

        // Make a transformer factory to create the Transformer
        TransformerFactory tFactory = TransformerFactory.newInstance();

        // Make the Transformer
        Transformer transformer = tFactory.newTransformer();

        // Mark the document as a DOM (XML) source
        DOMSource source = new DOMSource(document);

        // Say where we want the XML to go
        StreamResult result = new StreamResult(file);

        // Write the XML to file
        transformer.transform(source, result);
    }
}

Python 3.1.1 string to hex

You've already got some good answers, but I thought you might be interested in a bit of the background too.

Firstly you're missing the quotes. It should be:

"hello".encode("hex")

Secondly this codec hasn't been ported to Python 3.1. See here. It seems that they haven't yet decided whether or not these codecs should be included in Python 3 or implemented in a different way.

If you look at the diff file attached to that bug you can see the proposed method of implementing it:

import binascii
output = binascii.b2a_hex(input)

How do I specify a password to 'psql' non-interactively?

This can be done by creating a .pgpass file in the home directory of the (Linux) User. .pgpass file format:

<databaseip>:<port>:<databasename>:<dbusername>:<password>

You can also use wild card * in place of details.

Say I wanted to run tmp.sql without prompting for a password.

With the following code you can in *.sh file

echo "192.168.1.1:*:*:postgres:postgrespwd" > $HOME/.pgpass
echo "` chmod 0600 $HOME/.pgpass `"

echo " ` psql -h 192.168.1.1 -p 5432  -U postgres  postgres  -f tmp.sql `

Remove CSS from a Div using JQuery

As a note, depending upon the property you may be able to set it to auto.

Is it possible to make an HTML anchor tag not clickable/linkable using CSS?

CSS was designed to affect presentation, not behaviour.

You could use some JavaScript.

document.links[0].onclick = function(event) {
   event.preventDefault();
};

How to select current date in Hive SQL

To fetch only current date excluding time stamp:

in lower versions, looks like hive CURRENT_DATE is not available, hence you can use (it worked for me on Hive 0.14)

select TO_DATE(FROM_UNIXTIME(UNIX_TIMESTAMP()));

In higher versions say hive 2.0, you can use :

select CURRENT_DATE;

Eclipse - Failed to create the java virtual machine

You can also try closing other programs. :)

It's pretty simple, but worked for me. In my case the VM just don't had enough memory to run, and i got the same message. So i had to clean up the ram, by closing unnecessary programs.

Preventing scroll bars from being hidden for MacOS trackpad users in WebKit/Blink

Here is a shorter bit of code that reenables scroll bars across your entire website. I'm not sure if it's much different than the current most popular answer but here it is:

    -webkit-appearance: none;
    width: 7px;
}
::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb {
    border-radius: 4px;

How to remove pip package after deleting it manually

  1. Go to the site-packages directory where pip is installing your packages.
  2. You should see the egg file that corresponds to the package you want to uninstall. Delete the egg file (or, to be on the safe side, move it to a different directory).
  3. Do the same with the package files for the package you want to delete (in this case, the psycopg2 directory).
  4. pip install YOUR-PACKAGE

How do I remove the blue styling of telephone numbers on iPhone/iOS?

Just to elaborate on an earlier suggestion by David Thomas:

a[href^="tel"]{
    color:inherit;
    text-decoration:none;
}

Adding this to your css leaves the functionality of the phone number but strips the underline and matches the color you were using originally.

Strange that I can post my own answer but I can't respond to someone else's..

How to create a temporary directory and get the path / file name in Python

In Python 3, TemporaryDirectory in the tempfile module can be used.

This is straight from the examples:

import tempfile
with tempfile.TemporaryDirectory() as tmpdirname:
     print('created temporary directory', tmpdirname)
# directory and contents have been removed

If you would like to keep the directory a bit longer, you could do something like this:

import tempfile

temp_dir = tempfile.TemporaryDirectory()
print(temp_dir.name)
# use temp_dir, and when done:
temp_dir.cleanup()

The documentation also says that "On completion of the context or destruction of the temporary directory object the newly created temporary directory and all its contents are removed from the filesystem." So at the end of the program, for example, Python will clean up the directory if it wasn't explicitly removed. Python's unittest may complain of ResourceWarning: Implicitly cleaning up <TemporaryDirectory... if you rely on this, though.

How to use an image for the background in tkinter?

One simple method is to use place to use an image as a background image. This is the type of thing that place is really good at doing.

For example:

background_image=tk.PhotoImage(...)
background_label = tk.Label(parent, image=background_image)
background_label.place(x=0, y=0, relwidth=1, relheight=1)

You can then grid or pack other widgets in the parent as normal. Just make sure you create the background label first so it has a lower stacking order.

Note: if you are doing this inside a function, make sure you keep a reference to the image, otherwise the image will be destroyed by the garbage collector when the function returns. A common technique is to add a reference as an attribute of the label object:

background_label.image = background_image

Code line wrapping - how to handle long lines

In general, I break lines before operators, and indent the subsequent lines:

Map<long parameterization> longMap
    = new HashMap<ditto>();

String longString = "some long text"
                  + " some more long text";

To me, the leading operator clearly conveys that "this line was continued from something else, it doesn't stand on its own." Other people, of course, have different preferences.

Using PHP to upload file and add the path to MySQL database

First you should use print_r($_FILES) to debug, and see what it contains. :

your uploads.php would look like:

//This is the directory where images will be saved
$target = "pics/";
$target = $target . basename( $_FILES['Filename']['name']);

//This gets all the other information from the form
$Filename=basename( $_FILES['Filename']['name']);
$Description=$_POST['Description'];

//Writes the Filename to the server
if(move_uploaded_file($_FILES['Filename']['tmp_name'], $target)) {
    //Tells you if its all ok
    echo "The file ". basename( $_FILES['Filename']['name']). " has been uploaded, and your information has been added to the directory";
    // Connects to your Database
    mysql_connect("localhost", "root", "") or die(mysql_error()) ;
    mysql_select_db("altabotanikk") or die(mysql_error()) ;

    //Writes the information to the database
    mysql_query("INSERT INTO picture (Filename,Description)
    VALUES ('$Filename', '$Description')") ;
} else {
    //Gives and error if its not
    echo "Sorry, there was a problem uploading your file.";
}

Best way to implement keyboard shortcuts in a Windows Forms application?

You probably forgot to set the form's KeyPreview property to True. Overriding the ProcessCmdKey() method is the generic solution:

protected override bool ProcessCmdKey(ref Message msg, Keys keyData) {
  if (keyData == (Keys.Control | Keys.F)) {
    MessageBox.Show("What the Ctrl+F?");
    return true;
  }
  return base.ProcessCmdKey(ref msg, keyData);
}

Prefer composition over inheritance?

Personally I learned to always prefer composition over inheritance. There is no programmatic problem you can solve with inheritance which you cannot solve with composition; though you may have to use Interfaces(Java) or Protocols(Obj-C) in some cases. Since C++ doesn't know any such thing, you'll have to use abstract base classes, which means you cannot get entirely rid of inheritance in C++.

Composition is often more logical, it provides better abstraction, better encapsulation, better code reuse (especially in very large projects) and is less likely to break anything at a distance just because you made an isolated change anywhere in your code. It also makes it easier to uphold the "Single Responsibility Principle", which is often summarized as "There should never be more than one reason for a class to change.", and it means that every class exists for a specific purpose and it should only have methods that are directly related to its purpose. Also having a very shallow inheritance tree makes it much easier to keep the overview even when your project starts to get really large. Many people think that inheritance represents our real world pretty well, but that isn't the truth. The real world uses much more composition than inheritance. Pretty much every real world object you can hold in your hand has been composed out of other, smaller real world objects.

There are downsides of composition, though. If you skip inheritance altogether and only focus on composition, you will notice that you often have to write a couple of extra code lines that weren't necessary if you had used inheritance. You are also sometimes forced to repeat yourself and this violates the DRY Principle (DRY = Don't Repeat Yourself). Also composition often requires delegation, and a method is just calling another method of another object with no other code surrounding this call. Such "double method calls" (which may easily extend to triple or quadruple method calls and even farther than that) have much worse performance than inheritance, where you simply inherit a method of your parent. Calling an inherited method may be equally fast as calling a non-inherited one, or it may be slightly slower, but is usually still faster than two consecutive method calls.

You may have noticed that most OO languages don't allow multiple inheritance. While there are a couple of cases where multiple inheritance can really buy you something, but those are rather exceptions than the rule. Whenever you run into a situation where you think "multiple inheritance would be a really cool feature to solve this problem", you are usually at a point where you should re-think inheritance altogether, since even it may require a couple of extra code lines, a solution based on composition will usually turn out to be much more elegant, flexible and future proof.

Inheritance is really a cool feature, but I'm afraid it has been overused the last couple of years. People treated inheritance as the one hammer that can nail it all, regardless if it was actually a nail, a screw, or maybe a something completely different.

Renaming column names of a DataFrame in Spark Scala

Sometime we have the column name is below format in SQLServer or MySQL table

Ex  : Account Number,customer number

But Hive tables do not support column name containing spaces, so please use below solution to rename your old column names.

Solution:

val renamedColumns = df.columns.map(c => df(c).as(c.replaceAll(" ", "_").toLowerCase()))
df = df.select(renamedColumns: _*)

Regex to validate password strength

You can use zero-length positive look-aheads to specify each of your constraints separately:

(?=.{8,})(?=.*\p{Lu}.*\p{Lu})(?=.*[!@#$&*])(?=.*[0-9])(?=.*\p{Ll}.*\p{Ll})

If your regex engine doesn't support the \p notation and pure ASCII is enough, then you can replace \p{Lu} with [A-Z] and \p{Ll} with [a-z].

Linking to an external URL in Javadoc?

Javadocs don't offer any special tools for external links, so you should just use standard html:

See <a href="http://groversmill.com/">Grover's Mill</a> for a history of the
Martian invasion.

or

@see <a href="http://groversmill.com/">Grover's Mill</a> for a history of
the Martian invasion.

Don't use {@link ...} or {@linkplain ...} because these are for links to the javadocs of other classes and methods.

Non-static variable cannot be referenced from a static context

You must understand the difference between a class and an instance of that class. If you see a car on the street, you know immediately that it's a car even if you can't see which model or type. This is because you compare what you see with the class "car". The class contains which is similar to all cars. Think of it as a template or an idea.

At the same time, the car you see is an instance of the class "car" since it has all the properties which you expect: There is someone driving it, it has an engine, wheels.

So the class says "all cars have a color" and the instance says "this specific car is red".

In the OO world, you define the class and inside the class, you define a field of type Color. When the class is instantiated (when you create a specific instance), memory is reserved for the color and you can give this specific instance a color. Since these attributes are specific, they are non-static.

Static fields and methods are shared with all instances. They are for values which are specific to the class and not a specific instance. For methods, this usually are global helper methods (like Integer.parseInt()). For fields, it's usually constants (like car types, i.e. something where you have a limited set which doesn't change often).

To solve your problem, you need to instantiate an instance (create an object) of your class so the runtime can reserve memory for the instance (otherwise, different instances would overwrite each other which you don't want).

In your case, try this code as a starting block:

public static void main (String[] args)
{
    try
    {
        MyProgram7 obj = new MyProgram7 ();
        obj.run (args);
    }
    catch (Exception e)
    {
        e.printStackTrace ();
    }
}

// instance variables here

public void run (String[] args) throws Exception
{
    // put your code here
}

The new main() method creates an instance of the class it contains (sounds strange but since main() is created with the class instead of with the instance, it can do this) and then calls an instance method (run()).

How to tell Jackson to ignore a field during serialization if its value is null?

Case one

@JsonInclude(JsonInclude.Include.NON_NULL)
private String someString;

Case two

@JsonInclude(JsonInclude.Include.NON_EMPTY)

If someString is null, it will be ignored on both of cases. If someString is "" it just only be ignored on case two.

The same for List = null or List.size() = 0

jQuery: what is the best way to restrict "number"-only input for textboxes? (allow decimal points)

Please add in the bottom of the script:

if(this.value.length == 1 && this.value == 0)

Writing an input integer into a cell

When asking a user for a response to put into a cell using the InputBox method, there are usually three things that can happen¹.

  1. The user types something in and clicks OK. This is what you expect to happen and you will receive input back that can be returned directly to a cell or a declared variable.
  2. The user clicks Cancel, presses Esc or clicks × (Close). The return value is a boolean False. This should be accounted for.
  3. The user does not type anything in but clicks OK regardless. The return value is a zero-length string.

If you are putting the return value into a cell, your own logic stream will dictate what you want to do about the latter two scenarios. You may want to clear the cell or you may want to leave the cell contents alone. Here is how to handle the various outcomes with a variant type variable and a Select Case statement.

    Dim returnVal As Variant

    returnVal = InputBox(Prompt:="Type a value:", Title:="Test Data")

    'if the user clicked Cancel, Close or Esc the False
    'is translated to the variant as a vbNullString
    Select Case True
        Case Len(returnVal) = 0
            'no value but user clicked OK - clear the target cell
            Range("A2").ClearContents
        Case Else
            'returned a value with OK, save it
            Range("A2") = returnVal
    End Select

¹ There is a fourth scenario when a specific type of InputBox method is used. An InputBox can return a formula, cell range error or array. Those are special cases and requires using very specific syntax options. See the supplied link for more.

What is "String args[]"? parameter in main method Java

in public static void main(String args[]) args is an array of console line argument whose data type is String. in this array, you can store various string arguments by invoking them at the command line as shown below: java myProgram Shaan Royal then Shaan and Royal will be stored in the array as arg[0]="Shaan"; arg[1]="Royal"; you can do this manually also inside the program, when you don't call them at the command line.

Should I use "camel case" or underscores in python?

Function names should be lowercase, with words separated by underscores as necessary to improve readability. mixedCase is allowed only in contexts where that's already the prevailing style

LINQ Group By into a Dictionary Object

For @atari2600, this is what the answer would look like using ToLookup in lambda syntax:

var x = listOfCustomObjects
    .GroupBy(o => o.PropertyName)
    .ToLookup(customObject => customObject);

Basically, it takes the IGrouping and materializes it for you into a dictionary of lists, with the values of PropertyName as the key.

Converting PKCS#12 certificate into PEM using OpenSSL

If you need a PEM file without any password you can use this solution.

Just copy and paste the private key and the certificate to the same file and save as .pem.

The file will look like:

-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----
............................
............................
-----END PRIVATE KEY-----
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
...........................
...........................
-----END CERTIFICATE-----

That's the only way I found to upload certificates to Cisco devices for HTTPS.

Remove decimal values using SQL query

As I understand your question, You have one table with column as datatype decimal(18,9). And the column contains the data as follows:-

12.00
15.00
18.00
20.00

Now if you want to show record on UI without decimal value means like (12,15,18,20) then there are two options:-

  1. Either cast this column as int in Select Clause
  2. or may be you want to update this column value like (12,15,18,20).

To apply, First very simple just use the cast in select clause

select CAST(count AS INT) from tablename;

But if you want to update your column data with int value then you have to update you column datatype

and to do that

ALTER TABLE tablename ALTER COLUMN columnname decimal(9,0)

Then execute this

UPDATE tablename
   SET count = CAST(columnname AS INT)

CSS media queries: max-width OR max-height

There are two ways for writing a proper media queries in css. If you are writing media queries for larger device first, then the correct way of writing will be:

@media only screen
and (min-width : 415px){
    /* Styles */
}

@media only screen
and (min-width : 769px){
    /* Styles */
}

@media only screen
and (min-width : 992px){
    /* Styles */
}

But if you are writing media queries for smaller device first, then it would be something like:

@media only screen
and (max-width : 991px){
    /* Styles */
}

@media only screen
and (max-width : 768px){
    /* Styles */
}

@media only screen
and (max-width : 414px){
    /* Styles */
}

grep a tab in UNIX

A good choice is to use 'sed as grep' (as explained in this classical sed tutorial).

sed -n 's/pattern/&/p' file

Examples (works in bash, sh, ksh, csh,..):

[~]$ cat testfile
12 3
1 4 abc
xa      c
        a       c\2
1 23

[~]$ sed -n 's/\t/&/p' testfile
xa      c
        a       c\2

[~]$ sed -n 's/\ta\t/&/p' testfile
        a       c\2

Encoding an image file with base64

As I said in your previous question, there is no need to base64 encode the string, it will only make the program slower. Just use the repr

>>> with open("images/image.gif", "rb") as fin:
...  image_data=fin.read()
...
>>> with open("image.py","wb") as fout:
...  fout.write("image_data="+repr(image_data))
...

Now the image is stored as a variable called image_data in a file called image.py Start a fresh interpreter and import the image_data

>>> from image import image_data
>>>

How to pre-populate the sms body text via an html link

I suspect in most applications you won't know who to text, so you only want to fill the text body, not the number. That works as you'd expect by just leaving out the number - here's what the URLs look like in that case:

sms:?body=message

For iOS same thing except with the ;

sms:;body=message

Here's an example of the code I use to set up the SMS:

var ua = navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase();
var url;

if (ua.indexOf("iphone") > -1 || ua.indexOf("ipad") > -1)
   url = "sms:;body=" + encodeURIComponent("I'm at " + mapUrl + " @ " + pos.Address);
else
   url = "sms:?body=" + encodeURIComponent("I'm at " + mapUrl + " @ " + pos.Address);

   location.href = url;

How to turn off the Eclipse code formatter for certain sections of Java code?

Eclipse 3.6 allows you to turn off formatting by placing a special comment, like

// @formatter:off
...
// @formatter:on

The on/off features have to be turned "on" in Eclipse preferences: Java > Code Style > Formatter. Click on Edit, Off/On Tags, enable Enable Off/On tags.

It's also possible to change the magic strings in the preferences — check out the Eclipse 3.6 docs here.

More Information

Java > Code Style > Formatter > Edit > Off/On Tags

This preference allows you to define one tag to disable and one tag to enable the formatter (see the Off/On Tags tab in your formatter profile):

You also need to enable the flags from Java Formatting

How do I check OS with a preprocessor directive?

You can use Boost.Predef which contains various predefined macros for the target platform including the OS (BOOST_OS_*). Yes boost is often thought as a C++ library, but this one is a preprocessor header that works with C as well!

This library defines a set of compiler, architecture, operating system, library, and other version numbers from the information it can gather of C, C++, Objective C, and Objective C++ predefined macros or those defined in generally available headers. The idea for this library grew out of a proposal to extend the Boost Config library to provide more, and consistent, information than the feature definitions it supports. What follows is an edited version of that brief proposal.

For example

#include <boost/predef.h>

#if defined(BOOST_OS_WINDOWS)
#elif defined(BOOST_OS_ANDROID)
#elif defined(BOOST_OS_LINUX)
#elif defined(BOOST_OS_BSD)
#elif defined(BOOST_OS_AIX)
#elif defined(BOOST_OS_HAIKU)
...
#endif

The full list can be found in BOOST_OS operating system macros

How to send and retrieve parameters using $state.go toParams and $stateParams?

And in my case of a parent/child state. all the parameters declared in child state has to be known by the parent state

        .state('full', {
            url: '/full',
            templateUrl: 'js/content/templates/FullReadView.html',

            controller: 'FullReadCtrl'
        })
        .state('full.readFeed', {
            url: '/readFeed',
            views: {
                'full': {
                    templateUrl: 'js/content/templates/ReadFeedView.html',
                    params: { opmlFeed:null, source:null },
                    controller: 'ReadFeedCtrl'
                }
            }
        })

What is ViewModel in MVC?

A view model is a conceptual model of data. Its use is to for example either get a subset or combine data from different tables.

You might only want specific properties, so this allows you to only load those and not additional unneccesary properties

How can I plot separate Pandas DataFrames as subplots?

You can use the familiar Matplotlib style calling a figure and subplot, but you simply need to specify the current axis using plt.gca(). An example:

plt.figure(1)
plt.subplot(2,2,1)
df.A.plot() #no need to specify for first axis
plt.subplot(2,2,2)
df.B.plot(ax=plt.gca())
plt.subplot(2,2,3)
df.C.plot(ax=plt.gca())

etc...

Converting pixels to dp

to convert Pixels to dp use the TypedValue .

As the documentation mentioned : Container for a dynamically typed data value .

and use the applyDimension method :

public static float applyDimension (int unit, float value, DisplayMetrics metrics)

which Converts an unpacked complex data value holding a dimension to its final floating point value like the following :

Resources resource = getResources();
float dp = TypedValue.applyDimension(TypedValue.COMPLEX_UNIT_PX, 69, resource.getDisplayMetrics());

Hope that Helps .

jquery, domain, get URL

You don't need jQuery for this, as simple javascript will suffice:

alert(document.domain);

See it in action:

_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log("Output;");  _x000D_
console.log(location.hostname);_x000D_
console.log(document.domain);_x000D_
alert(window.location.hostname)_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log("document.URL : "+document.URL);_x000D_
console.log("document.location.href : "+document.location.href);_x000D_
console.log("document.location.origin : "+document.location.origin);_x000D_
console.log("document.location.hostname : "+document.location.hostname);_x000D_
console.log("document.location.host : "+document.location.host);_x000D_
console.log("document.location.pathname : "+document.location.pathname);
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

For further domain-related values, check out the properties of window.location online. You may find that location.host is a better option, as its content could differ from document.domain. For instance, the url http://192.168.1.80:8080 will have only the ipaddress in document.domain, but both the ipaddress and port number in location.host.

Java get month string from integer

This has already been mentioned, but here is a way to place the code within a method:

    public static String getMonthName(int monthIndex) {
         return new DateFormatSymbols().getMonths()[monthIndex].toString();
    }

or if you wanted to create a better error than an ArrayIndexOutOfBoundsException:

    public static String getMonthName(int monthIndex) {
        //since this is zero based, 11 = December
        if (monthIndex < 0 || monthIndex > 11 ) {
            throw new IllegalArgumentException(monthIndex + " is not a valid month index.");
        }
        return new DateFormatSymbols().getMonths()[monthIndex].toString();
    }

Creating a Plot Window of a Particular Size

This will depend on the device you're using. If you're using a pdf device, you can do this:

pdf( "mygraph.pdf", width = 11, height = 8 )
plot( x, y )

You can then divide up the space in the pdf using the mfrow parameter like this:

par( mfrow = c(2,2) )

That makes a pdf with four panels available for plotting. Unfortunately, some of the devices take different units than others. For example, I think that X11 uses pixels, while I'm certain that pdf uses inches. If you'd just like to create several devices and plot different things to them, you can use dev.new(), dev.list(), and dev.next().

Other devices that might be useful include:

There's a list of all of the devices here.

Unable to begin a distributed transaction

OK, so services are started, there is an ethernet path between them, name resolution works, linked servers work, and you disabled transaction authentication.

My gut says firewall issue, but a few things come to mind...

  1. Are the machines in the same domain? (yeah, shouldn't matter with disabled authentication)
  2. Are firewalls running on the the machines? DTC can be a bit of pain for firewalls as it uses a range of ports, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306843 For the time being, I would disable firewalls for the sake of identifying the problem
  3. What does DTC ping say? http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=2868
  4. What account is the SQL Service running as ?

Error: No Firebase App '[DEFAULT]' has been created - call Firebase App.initializeApp()

This may not be best answer but, I had to initialize app with admin and firebase like below. I use admin for it's own purposes and firebase as well.

const firebase = require("firebase");
const admin = require("firebase-admin");

admin.initializeApp(functions.config().firebase);
firebase.initializeApp(functions.config().firebase);

        const password = request.query.password;
        if (!email) {
            response.send("query.email is required.");
            return;
        }
        if (!password) {
            response.send("query.password is required.");
            return;
        }
        return authService.createUserWithEmailAndPassword(email, password)
            .then(success => {
                let responseJson = JSON.stringify(success);
                console.log("createUserWithEmailAndPassword.responseJson", responseJson);
                response.send(responseJson);
            })
            .catch(error => {
                let errorJson = JSON.stringify(error);
                console.log("createUserWithEmailAndPassword.errorJson", errorJson);
                response.send(errorJson);
            });
    }

Get timezone from users browser using moment(timezone).js

Using Moment library, see their website -> https://momentjs.com/timezone/docs/#/using-timezones/converting-to-zone/

i notice they also user their own library in their website, so you can have a try using the browser console before installing it

moment().tz(String);

The moment#tz mutator will change the time zone and update the offset.

moment("2013-11-18").tz("America/Toronto").format('Z'); // -05:00
moment("2013-11-18").tz("Europe/Berlin").format('Z');   // +01:00

This information is used consistently in other operations, like calculating the start of the day.

var m = moment.tz("2013-11-18 11:55", "America/Toronto");
m.format();                     // 2013-11-18T11:55:00-05:00
m.startOf("day").format();      // 2013-11-18T00:00:00-05:00
m.tz("Europe/Berlin").format(); // 2013-11-18T06:00:00+01:00
m.startOf("day").format();      // 2013-11-18T00:00:00+01:00

Without an argument, moment#tz returns:

    the time zone name assigned to the moment instance or
    undefined if a time zone has not been set.

var m = moment.tz("2013-11-18 11:55", "America/Toronto");
m.tz();  // America/Toronto
var m = moment.tz("2013-11-18 11:55");
m.tz() === undefined;  // true

What is the difference between the 'COPY' and 'ADD' commands in a Dockerfile?

COPY copies a file/directory from your host to your image.

ADD copies a file/directory from your host to your image, but can also fetch remote URLs, extract TAR files, etc...

Use COPY for simply copying files and/or directories into the build context.

Use ADD for downloading remote resources, extracting TAR files, etc..

What is the difference between `let` and `var` in swift?

The keyword var is used to define a variable whose value you can easily change like this:

var no1 = 1 // declaring the variable
no1 = 2 // changing the value since it is defined as a variable not a constant

However, the let keyword is only to create a constant used when you do not want to change the value of the constant again. If you were to try changing the value of the constant, you will get an error:

let no2 = 5 // declaring no2 as a constant
no2 = 8 // this will give an error as you cannot change the value of a constant

How to get all table names from a database?

In newer versions of MySQL connectors the default tables are also listed if catalog is not passed

        DatabaseMetaData dbMeta = con.getMetaData();
        //con.getCatalog() returns database name
        ResultSet rs = dbMeta.getTables(con.getCatalog(), "", null, new String[]{"TABLE"});
        ArrayList<String> tables = new ArrayList<String>();
        while(rs.next()){
            String tableName = rs.getString("TABLE_NAME");
            tables.add(tableName);
        }
        return tables;

How to Toggle a div's visibility by using a button click

To switch the display-style between block and none you can do something like this:

function toggleDiv(id) {
    var div = document.getElementById(id);
    div.style.display = div.style.display == "none" ? "block" : "none";
}

Retrieving Android API version programmatically

Taking into account all said, here is the code I use for detecting if device has Froyo or newer Android OS (2.2+):

public static boolean froyoOrNewer() {
    // SDK_INT is introduced in 1.6 (API Level 4) so code referencing that would fail
    // Also we can't use SDK_INT since some modified ROMs play around with this value, RELEASE is most versatile variable
    if (android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("1.") ||
        android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("2.0") ||
        android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("2.1"))
        return false;

    return true;
}

Obviously, you can modify that if condition to take into account 1.0 & 1.5 versions of Android in case you need generic checker. You will probably end up with something like this:

// returns true if current Android OS on device is >= verCode
public static boolean androidMinimum(int verCode) {
    if (android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("1.0"))
        return verCode == 1;
    else if (android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("1.1")) {
        return verCode <= 2;
    } else if (android.os.Build.VERSION.RELEASE.startsWith("1.5")) {
        return verCode <= 3;
    } else {
        return android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK_INT >= verCode;
    }
}

Let me know if code is not working for you.

How can I loop through enum values for display in radio buttons?

Two options:

for (let item in MotifIntervention) {
    if (isNaN(Number(item))) {
        console.log(item);
    }
}

Or

Object.keys(MotifIntervention).filter(key => !isNaN(Number(MotifIntervention[key])));

(code in playground)

Edit

String enums look different than regular ones, for example:

enum MyEnum {
    A = "a",
    B = "b",
    C = "c"
}

Compiles into:

var MyEnum;
(function (MyEnum) {
    MyEnum["A"] = "a";
    MyEnum["B"] = "b";
    MyEnum["C"] = "c";
})(MyEnum || (MyEnum = {}));

Which just gives you this object:

{
    A: "a",
    B: "b",
    C: "c"
}

You can get all the keys (["A", "B", "C"]) like this:

Object.keys(MyEnum);

And the values (["a", "b", "c"]):

Object.keys(MyEnum).map(key => MyEnum[key])

Or using Object.values():

Object.values(MyEnum)

Compare 2 JSON objects

Simply parsing the JSON and comparing the two objects is not enough because it wouldn't be the exact same object references (but might be the same values).

You need to do a deep equals.

From http://threebit.net/mail-archive/rails-spinoffs/msg06156.html - which seems the use jQuery.

Object.extend(Object, {
   deepEquals: function(o1, o2) {
     var k1 = Object.keys(o1).sort();
     var k2 = Object.keys(o2).sort();
     if (k1.length != k2.length) return false;
     return k1.zip(k2, function(keyPair) {
       if(typeof o1[keyPair[0]] == typeof o2[keyPair[1]] == "object"){
         return deepEquals(o1[keyPair[0]], o2[keyPair[1]])
       } else {
         return o1[keyPair[0]] == o2[keyPair[1]];
       }
     }).all();
   }
});

Usage:

var anObj = JSON.parse(jsonString1);
var anotherObj= JSON.parse(jsonString2);

if (Object.deepEquals(anObj, anotherObj))
   ...

hibernate could not get next sequence value

I think you already have enough answer, but I got exactly the same error and my problem was another one. And I wasted a little bit of time trying to solve it.

In my case the problem was the owner of sequence in Postgres. So, if any solution above did not solved your problem, check if the owner of sequence is the user/role which should have permission.

Follows a sample:

    START WITH 1
    INCREMENT BY 1
    NO MINVALUE
    NO MAXVALUE
    CACHE 1;

ALTER TABLE public.seq_abcd OWNER TO USER_APP;

Is Spring annotation @Controller same as @Service?

No you can't they are different. When the app was deployed your controller mappings would be borked for example.

Why do you want to anyway, a controller is not a service, and vice versa.

Is there any ASCII character for <br>?

You may be looking for the special HTML character, &#10; .

You can use this to get a line break, and it can be inserted immediately following the last character in the current line. One place this is especially useful is if you want to include multiple lines in a list within a title or alt label.

How do I get the current mouse screen coordinates in WPF?

If you're looking for a 1 liner, this does well.

new Point(Mouse.GetPosition(mWindow).X + mWindow.Left, Mouse.GetPosition(mWindow).Y + mWindow.Top)

The + mWindow.Left and + mWindow.Top makes sure the position is in the right place even when the user drags the window around.

How to adjust an UIButton's imageSize?

Updated for Swift > 5

set the size:

button.frame = CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: 44, height: 44)

set margins:

button.imageEdgeInsets = UIEdgeInsets(top: 10, left: 10, bottom: 10, right: 10)

How to add to an NSDictionary

By setting you'd use setValue:(id)value forKey:(id)key method of NSMutableDictionary object:

NSMutableDictionary *dict = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init];
[dict setValue:[NSNumber numberWithInt:5] forKey:@"age"];

Or in modern Objective-C:

NSMutableDictionary *dict = [[NSMutableDictionary alloc] init];
dict[@"age"] = @5;

The difference between mutable and "normal" is, well, mutability. I.e. you can alter the contents of NSMutableDictionary (and NSMutableArray) while you can't do that with "normal" NSDictionary and NSArray

JavaScriptSerializer.Deserialize - how to change field names

There is no standard support for renaming properties in JavaScriptSerializer however you can quite easily add your own:

    [JsonProperty("user_id")]
    public int UserId { get; set; }

    [JsonProperty("detail_level")]
    public DetailLevel DetailLevel { get; set; }

I appreicate this might be a little late but thought other people wanting to use the JavaScriptSerializer rather than the DataContractJsonSerializer might appreciate it.

How do you convert an entire directory with ffmpeg?

For anyone who wants to batch convert anything with ffmpeg but would like to have a convenient Windows interface, I developed this front-end:

https://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg-batch

It adds to ffmpeg a window fashion interface, progress bars and time remaining info, features I always missed when using ffmpeg.

How to make Java work with SQL Server?

Do not put both the old sqljdbc.jar and the new sqljdbc4.jar in your classpath - this will make it (more or less) unpredictable which classes are being used, if both of those JARs contain classes with the same qualified names.

You said you put sqljdbc4.jar in your classpath - did you remove the old sqljdbc.jar from the classpath? You said "it didn't work", what does that mean exactly? Are you sure you don't still have the old JAR in your classpath somewhere (maybe not explicitly)?

Getting next element while cycling through a list

After thinking this through carefully, I think this is the best way. It lets you step off in the middle easily without using break, which I think is important, and it requires minimal computation, so I think it's the fastest. It also doesn't require that li be a list or tuple. It could be any iterator.

from itertools import cycle

li = [0, 1, 2, 3]

running = True
licycle = cycle(li)
# Prime the pump
nextelem = next(licycle)
while running:
    thiselem, nextelem = nextelem, next(licycle)

I'm leaving the other solutions here for posterity.

All of that fancy iterator stuff has its place, but not here. Use the % operator.

li = [0, 1, 2, 3]

running = True
while running:
    for idx, elem in enumerate(li):
        thiselem = elem
        nextelem = li[(idx + 1) % len(li)]

Now, if you intend to infinitely cycle through a list, then just do this:

li = [0, 1, 2, 3]

running = True
idx = 0
while running:
    thiselem = li[idx]
    idx = (idx + 1) % len(li)
    nextelem = li[idx]

I think that's easier to understand than the other solution involving tee, and probably faster too. If you're sure the list won't change size, you can squirrel away a copy of len(li) and use that.

This also lets you easily step off the ferris wheel in the middle instead of having to wait for the bucket to come down to the bottom again. The other solutions (including yours) require you check running in the middle of the for loop and then break.

WCF timeout exception detailed investigation

Looks like this exception message is quite generic and can be received due to a variety of reasons. We ran into this while deploying the client on Windows 8.1 machines. Our WCF client runs inside of a windows service and continuously polls the WCF service. The windows service runs under a non-admin user. The issue was fixed by setting the clientCredentialType to "Windows" in the WCF configuration to allow the authentication to pass-through, as in the following:

      <security mode="None">
        <transport clientCredentialType="Windows" proxyCredentialType="None"
          realm="" />
        <message clientCredentialType="UserName" algorithmSuite="Default" />
      </security>

HttpWebRequest-The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request

Are you sure you should be using POST not PUT?

POST is usually used with application/x-www-urlencoded formats. If you are using a REST API, you should maybe be using PUT? If you are uploading a file you probably need to use multipart/form-data. Not always, but usually, that is the right thing to do..

Also you don't seem to be using the credentials to log in - you need to use the Credentials property of the HttpWebRequest object to send the username and password.

How do I install cURL on Windows?

You're probably mistaking what PHP.ini you need to edit. first, add a PHPinfo(); to a info.php, and run it from your browser.

Write down the PHP ini directory path you see in the variables list now! You will probably notice that it's different from your PHP-CLI ini file.

How to update the constant height constraint of a UIView programmatically?

You can update your constraint with a smooth animation if you want, see the chunk of code below:

UIView.animate(withDuration: animateTime, animations:{
self.view.layoutIfNeeded()
})

Count distinct values

You can use this:

Writing String to Stream and reading it back does not work

You're using message.Length which returns the number of characters in the string, but you should be using the nubmer of bytes to read. You should use something like:

byte[] messageBytes = uniEncoding.GetBytes(message);
stringAsStream.Write(messageBytes, 0, messageBytes.Length);

You're then reading a single byte and expecting to get a character from it just by casting to char. UnicodeEncoding will use two bytes per character.

As Justin says you're also not seeking back to the beginning of the stream.

Basically I'm afraid pretty much everything is wrong here. Please give us the bigger picture and we can help you work out what you should really be doing. Using a StreamWriter to write and then a StreamReader to read is quite possibly what you want, but we can't really tell from just the brief bit of code you've shown.

What version of JBoss I am running?

Just found another way to know the jboss version, so pointing out here:

In Linux/Windows use --version parameter along with Jboss executable to know the Jboss Version

eg:

[immo@g012 bin]$  ./run.sh --version

  JBoss Bootstrap Environment

  JBOSS_HOME: /programs/jboss4.2-AES2.3Cert

  JAVA: /programs/java/jdk1.7.0_09/bin/java

  JAVA_OPTS: -server -Xms128m -Xmx512m -Dsun.rmi.dgc.client.gcInterval=3600000

  CLASSPATH: /programs/jboss4.2-AES2.3Cert/bin/run.jar:/programs/java/jdk1.7.0_09/lib/tools.jar

Listening for transport dt_socket at address: 8787
JBoss 4.0.4.GA (build: CVSTag=JBoss_4_0_4_GA date=200605151000)

Here JBoss 4.0.4.GA is the Jboss version

in windows this could be

run.bat --version

Also, in new versions of jboss the executable is standalone.sh / standalone.bat

How to remove items from a list while iterating?

The other answers are correct that it is usually a bad idea to delete from a list that you're iterating. Reverse iterating avoids the pitfalls, but it is much more difficult to follow code that does that, so usually you're better off using a list comprehension or filter.

There is, however, one case where it is safe to remove elements from a sequence that you are iterating: if you're only removing one item while you're iterating. This can be ensured using a return or a break. For example:

for i, item in enumerate(lst):
    if item % 4 == 0:
        foo(item)
        del lst[i]
        break

This is often easier to understand than a list comprehension when you're doing some operations with side effects on the first item in a list that meets some condition and then removing that item from the list immediately after.

Removing fields from struct or hiding them in JSON Response

You can use tagging attribute "omitifempty" or make optional fields pointers and leave those you want skipped uninitialized.

You may want to update you .bashrc and .bash_profile files with aliases to recognize the command you are entering.

Why are hexadecimal numbers prefixed with 0x?

Note: I don't know the correct answer, but the below is just my personal speculation!

As has been mentioned a 0 before a number means it's octal:

04524 // octal, leading 0

Imagine needing to come up with a system to denote hexadecimal numbers, and note we're working in a C style environment. How about ending with h like assembly? Unfortunately you can't - it would allow you to make tokens which are valid identifiers (eg. you could name a variable the same thing) which would make for some nasty ambiguities.

8000h // hex
FF00h // oops - valid identifier! Hex or a variable or type named FF00h?

You can't lead with a character for the same reason:

xFF00 // also valid identifier

Using a hash was probably thrown out because it conflicts with the preprocessor:

#define ...
#FF00 // invalid preprocessor token?

In the end, for whatever reason, they decided to put an x after a leading 0 to denote hexadecimal. It is unambiguous since it still starts with a number character so can't be a valid identifier, and is probably based off the octal convention of a leading 0.

0xFF00 // definitely not an identifier!

dll missing in JDBC

For easy fix follow these steps:

  1. goto: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/connect/jdbc/building-the-connection-url#Connectingintegrated
  2. Download the JDBC file and extract to your preferred location
  3. open the auth folder matching your OS x64 or x86
  4. copy sqljdbc_auth.dll file
  5. paste in: C:\Program Files\Java\jdk_version\bin

restart either eclipse or netbeans

node: command not found

The problem is that your PATH does not include the location of the node executable.

You can likely run node as "/usr/local/bin/node".

You can add that location to your path by running the following command to add a single line to your bashrc file:

echo 'export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/bin' >> $HOME/.bashrc

How to import JSON File into a TypeScript file?

For Angular 7+,

1) add a file "typings.d.ts" to the project's root folder (e.g., src/typings.d.ts):

declare module "*.json" {
    const value: any;
    export default value;
}

2) import and access JSON data either:

import * as data from 'path/to/jsonData/example.json';
...
export class ExampleComponent {
    constructor() {
        console.log(data.default);
    }

}

or:

import data from 'path/to/jsonData/example.json';
...
export class ExampleComponent {
    constructor() {
        console.log(data);
    }

}

How do I register a .NET DLL file in the GAC?

These responses don't tell you that gacutil resides in C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1* by the way.

I didn't have it in my v2.0 folder. But I tried dragging & dropping the DLL into the C:\WINDOWS\Assembly folder as was suggested here earlier and that was easier and does work, as long as it's a .NET library. I also tried a COM library and this failed with an error that it was expecting an assembly manifest. I know that wasn't the question here, but thought I'd mention that in case someone finds out they can't add it, that that might be why.

How can I autoformat/indent C code in vim?

Try the following keystrokes:

gg=G

Explanation: gg goes to the top of the file, = is a command to fix the indentation and G tells it to perform the operation to the end of the file.

C++ create string of text and variables

The new way to do with c++20 is using format.

#include <format>

auto var = std::format("sometext {} sometext {}", somevar, somevar);

What's the difference between unit, functional, acceptance, and integration tests?

I will explain you this with a practical example and no theory stuff:

A developer writes the code. No GUI is implemented yet. The testing at this level verifies that the functions work correctly and the data types are correct. This phase of testing is called Unit testing.

When a GUI is developed, and application is assigned to a tester, he verifies business requirements with a client and executes the different scenarios. This is called functional testing. Here we are mapping the client requirements with application flows.

Integration testing: let's say our application has two modules: HR and Finance. HR module was delivered and tested previously. Now Finance is developed and is available to test. The interdependent features are also available now, so in this phase, you will test communication points between the two and will verify they are working as requested in requirements.

Regression testing is another important phase, which is done after any new development or bug fixes. Its aim is to verify previously working functions.

What's the difference between Unicode and UTF-8?

UTF-16 and UTF-8 are both encodings of Unicode. They are both Unicode; one is not more Unicode than the other.

Don't let an unfortunate historical artifact from Microsoft confuse you.

Summing elements in a list

You can use map function and pythons inbuilt sum() function. It simplifies the solution. And reduces the complexity.
a=map(int,raw_input().split())
sum(a)
Done!

How to get jSON response into variable from a jquery script

Here's the script, rewritten to use the suggestions above and a change to your no-cache method.

<?php
// Simpler way of making sure all no-cache headers get sent
// and understood by all browsers, including IE.
session_cache_limiter('nocache');
header('Expires: ' . gmdate('r', 0));

header('Content-type: application/json');

// set to return response=error
$arr = array ('response'=>'error','comment'=>'test comment here');
echo json_encode($arr);
?>

//the script above returns this:
{"response":"error","comment":"test comment here"}

<script type="text/javascript">
$.ajax({
    type: "POST",
    url: "process.php",
    data: dataString,
    dataType: "json",
    success: function (data) {
        if (data.response == 'captcha') {
            alert('captcha');
        } else if (data.response == 'success') {
            alert('success');
        } else {
            alert('sorry there was an error');
        }
    }

}); // Semi-colons after all declarations, IE is picky on these things.
</script>

The main issue here was that you had a typo in the JSON you were returning ("resonse" instead of "response". This meant that you were looking for the wrong property in the JavaScript code. One way of catching these problems in the future is to console.log the value of data and make sure the property you are looking for is there.

Learning how to use the Chrome debugger tools (or similar tools in Firefox/Safari/Opera/etc.) will also be invaluable.

How to generate Javadoc from command line

Let's say you have the following directory structure where you want to generate javadocs on file1.java and file2.java (package com.test), with the javadocs being placed in C:\javadoc\test:

C:\
|
+--javadoc\
|  |
|  +--test\
|
+--projects\
   |
   +--com\
      |
      +--test\
         |
         +--file1.java
         +--file2.java

In the command terminal, navigate to the root of your package: C:\projects. If you just want to generate the standard javadocs on all the java files inside the project, run the following command (for multiple packages, separate the package names by spaces):

C:\projects> javadoc -d [path to javadoc destination directory] [package name]

C:\projects> javadoc -d C:\javadoc\test com.test

If you want to run javadocs from elsewhere, you'll need to specify the sourcepath. For example, if you were to run javadocs in in C:\, you would modify the command as such:

C:\> javadoc -d [path to javadoc destination directory] -sourcepath [path to package directory] [package name]

C:\> javadoc -d C:\javadoc\test -sourcepath C:\projects com.test

If you want to run javadocs on only selected .java files, then add the source filenames separated by spaces (you can use an asterisk (*) for a wildcard). Make sure to include the path to the files:

C:\> javadoc -d [path to javadoc destination directory] [source filenames]

C:\> javadoc -d C:\javadoc\test C:\projects\com\test\file1.java

More information/scenarios can be found here.

Error: the entity type requires a primary key

Your Id property needs to have a setter. However the setter can be private. The [Key] attribute is not necessary if the property is named "Id" as it will find it through the naming convention where it looks for a key with the name "Id".

public Guid Id { get; } // Will not work
public Guid Id { get; set; } // Will work
public Guid Id { get; private set; } // Will also work

Resize image in the wiki of GitHub using Markdown

Almost 5 years after only the direct HTML formatting works for images on GitHub and other markdown options still prevent images from loading when specifying some custom sizes even with the wrong dimensions. I prefer to specify the desired width and get the height calculated automatically, for example,

_x000D_
<img src="https://github.com/your_image.png" alt="Your image title" width="250"/>

Can´t run .bat file under windows 10

There is no inherent reason that a simple batch file would run in XP but not Windows 10. It is possible you are referencing a command or a 3rd party utility that no longer exists. To know more about what is actually happening, you will need to do one of the following:

  • Add a pause to the batch file so that you can see what is happening before it exits.
    1. Right click on one of the .bat files and select "edit". This will open the file in notepad.
    2. Go to the very end of the file and add a new line by pressing "enter".
    3. type pause.
    4. Save the file.
    5. Run the file again using the same method you did before.

- OR -

  • Run the batch file from a static command prompt so the window does not close.
    1. In the folder where the .bat files are located, hold down the "shift" key and right click in the white space.
    2. Select "Open Command Window Here".
    3. You will now see a new command prompt. Type in the name of the batch file and press enter.

Once you have done this, I recommend creating a new question with the output you see after using one of the methods above.

How to convert buffered image to image and vice-versa?

BufferedImage is a(n) Image, so the implicit cast that you're doing in the second line is able to be compiled directly. If you knew an Image was really a BufferedImage, you would have to cast it explicitly like so:

Image image = ImageIO.read(new File(file));
BufferedImage buffered = (BufferedImage) image;

Because BufferedImage extends Image, it can fit in an Image container. However, any Image can fit there, including ones that are not a BufferedImage, and as such you may get a ClassCastException at runtime if the type does not match, because a BufferedImage cannot hold any other type unless it extends BufferedImage.

What are all the differences between src and data-src attributes?

What's the difference between next() and nextLine() methods from Scanner class?

  • Just for another example of Scanner.next() and nextLine() is that like below : nextLine() does not let user type while next() makes Scanner wait and read the input.

     Scanner sc = new Scanner(System.in);

     do {
        System.out.println("The values on dice are :");
        for(int i = 0; i < n; i++) {
            System.out.println(ran.nextInt(6) + 1);
        }
        System.out.println("Continue : yes or no");
     } while(sc.next().equals("yes"));
    // while(sc.nextLine().equals("yes"));

jQuery to loop through elements with the same class

$('.testimonal').each(function(i,v){
  if (condition) {
    doSomething();
  }
});

Chrome Fullscreen API

The API only works during user interaction, so it cannot be used maliciously. Try the following code:

addEventListener("click", function() {
    var el = document.documentElement,
      rfs = el.requestFullscreen
        || el.webkitRequestFullScreen
        || el.mozRequestFullScreen
        || el.msRequestFullscreen
    ;

    rfs.call(el);
});

setting system property

For JBoss, in standalone.xml, put after .

<extensions>
</extensions>

<system-properties>
    <property name="my.project.dir" value="/home/francesco" />
</system-properties>

For eclipse:

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect inside batch

set myPATH="C:\Users\DEB\Downloads\10.1.1.0.4"
cd %myPATH%
  • The single quotes do not indicate a string, they make it starts: 'C:\ instead of C:\ so

  • %name% is the usual syntax for expanding a variable, the !name! syntax needs to be enabled using the command setlocal ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION first, or by running the command prompt with CMD /V:ON.

  • Don't use PATH as your name, it is a system name that contains all the locations of executable programs. If you overwrite it, random bits of your script will stop working. If you intend to change it, you need to do set PATH=%PATH%;C:\Users\DEB\Downloads\10.1.1.0.4 to keep the current PATH content, and add something to the end.
