Here is an example class using CSS named colors:

This adds a background that is 25% opaque (colored) and 75% transparent.

CAVEAT Unfortunately, opacity will affect then entire element it's attached to.
So if you have text in that element, it will set the text to 25% opacity too. :-(

The way to get past this is to use the rgba or hsla methods to indicate transparency as part of your desired background "color". This allows you to specify the background transparency, independent from the transparency of the other items in your element.

Here are 3 ways to set a blue background at 75% transparency, without affecting other elements:

  • background: rgba(0%, 0%, 100%, 0.75)
  • background: rgba(0, 0, 255, 0.75)
  • background: hsla(240, 100%, 50%, 0.75)

You should use static_cast<char>(i) to cast the integer i to char.

reinterpret_cast should almost never be used, unless you want to cast one type into a fundamentally different type.

Also reinterpret_cast is machine dependent so safely using it requires complete understanding of the types as well as how the compiler implements the cast.

If you either use Buffered or Unbuffered result set for fetching data, first you must simply clear the fetched data from the memory, once you have fetched all the data. As you can't execute another MYSQL procedure on the same connection until you clear the fetched memory.

Add this below function right end of your script, so it will solve the problem

$numRecords->close(); or $numRecords->free(); // This clears the referencing memory, and will be ready for the next MYSQL fetch

I ran into an issue very similar to the original question that took me a little while to resolve.

Just incase anyone else is working on an MVC application and finds their way into this thread, make sure that you have a wildcard mapping to the appropriate .Net aspnet_isapi.dll defined. As soon as I did this, my app_offline.htm started behaving as expected.


IIS 6 Configuration Steps

On IIS Application Properties, select virtual Directory tab.

Per the comments, you can also do this:

Note that the repetition of empName is deliberate. You have to tell MySQL that you want to keep the same column name.

You should be aware that both syntax versions are specific to MySQL. They won't work, for example, in PostgreSQL or many other DBMSs.

Another edit: As pointed out by @Luis Rossi in a comment, you need to completely specify the altered column definition just before the AFTER modifier. The above examples just have VARCHAR(50), but if you need other characteristics (such as NOT NULL or a default value) you need to include those as well. Consult the docs on ALTER TABLE for more info.

git pull error :error: remote ref is at but expected

Permanent Fix

git update-ref -d resolved my instance of this error, e.g.

git update-ref -d refs/remotes/origin/user

Note that this doesn't impact remote.

In my case, a subsequent git fetch fetched that branch again, and following git fetches/pulls no longer gave the error "remote ref is at but expected".

If that doesn't work, a temporary fix:

What's the first part of your Subversion repository URL?

  • If your URL looks like: http://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 80.
  • If your URL looks like: https://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 443.
  • If your URL looks like: svn://subversion/, then you're probably going over Port 3690.
  • If your URL looks like: svn+ssh://subversion/repos/, then you're probably going over Port 22.

I can't guarantee the first four since it's possible to reconfigure everything to use different ports, of if you go through a proxy of some sort.

If you're using a VPN, you may have to configure your VPN client to reroute these to their correct ports. A lot of places don't configure their correctly VPNs to do this type of proxying. It's either because they have some sort of anal-retentive IT person who's being overly security conscious, or because they simply don't know any better. Even worse, they'll give you a client where this stuff can't be reconfigured.

The only way around that is to log into a local machine over the VPN, and then do everything from that system.

Checkout a new feature_branch

Now if you want to merge feature_branch changes to master, Do git merge feature_branch sitting on the master.

This will add all commits into master branch (4 in master + 2 in feature_branch = total 6) + an extra merge commit something like 'Merge branch 'feature_branch'' as the master is diverged.

If you really need to ignore these commits (those made in FB) and add the whole changes made in feature_branch as a single commit like 'Integrated feature branch changes into master', Run git merge feature_merge --no-commit.

With --no-commit, it perform the merge and stop just before creating a merge commit, We will have all the added changes in feature branch now in master and get a chance to create a new commit as our own.

You can also use 'auto' as the property value, but this will invoke scrollbars if any element appears outside.

You can also try floating the parent container, but depending on your design, this may be impossible/difficult.

I've faced the same issue and want to share how I solved it and why.

As you mentioned there are two problems. The first:

In Asp.Net Core how do I register these services and resolve it at runtime based on some key?

So what options do we have? Folks suggest two:

  • Use a custom factory (like _myFactory.GetServiceByKey(key))

  • Use another DI engine (like _unityContainer.Resolve<IService>(key))

Is the Factory pattern the only option here?

In fact both options are factories because each IoC Container is also a factory (highly configurable and complicated though). And it seems to me that other options are also variations of the Factory pattern.

So what option is better then? Here I agree with @Sock who suggested using custom factory, and that is why.

First, I always try to avoid adding new dependencies when they are not really needed. So I agree with you in this point. Moreover, using two DI frameworks is worse than creating custom factory abstraction. In the second case you have to add new package dependency (like Unity) but depending on a new factory interface is less evil here. The main idea of ASP.NET Core DI, I believe, is simplicity. It maintains a minimal set of features following KISS principle. If you need some extra feature then DIY or use a corresponding Plungin that implements desired feature (Open Closed Principle).

Secondly, often we need to inject many named dependencies for single service. In case of Unity you may have to specify names for constructor parameters (using InjectionConstructor). This registration uses reflection and some smart logic to guess arguments for the constructor. This also may lead to runtime errors if registration does not match the constructor arguments. From the other hand, when using your own factory you have full control of how to provide the constructor parameters. It's more readable and it's resolved at compile-time. KISS principle again.

The second problem:

How can _serviceProvider.GetService() inject appropriate connection string?

First, I agree with you that depending on new things like IOptions (and therefore on package Microsoft.Extensions.Options.ConfigurationExtensions) is not a good idea. I've seen some discussing about IOptions where there were different opinions about its benifit. Again, I try to avoid adding new dependencies when they are not really needed. Is it really needed? I think no. Otherwise each implementation would have to depend on it without any clear need coming from that implementation (for me it looks like violation of ISP, where I agree with you too). This is also true about depending on the factory but in this case it can be avoided.

The ASP.NET Core DI provides a very nice overload for that purpose:

Here's a method that I'm using for this which will work universally across compilers and platforms:

Create a struct or class as a container for your collection of objects. Define an operator overload function for <<.

The read_sql docs say this params argument can be a list, tuple or dict (see docs).

To pass the values in the sql query, there are different syntaxes possible: ?, :1, :name, %s, %(name)s (see PEP249).
But not all of these possibilities are supported by all database drivers, which syntax is supported depends on the driver you are using (psycopg2 in your case I suppose).

In your second case, when using a dict, you are using 'named arguments', and according to the psycopg2 documentation, they support the %(name)s style (and so not the :name I suppose), see http://initd.org/psycopg/docs/usage.html#query-parameters.

Kudos, no solution is done without testing. I like to use the Firefox plugin "Liveheaders" it shows all the information about every http message between the browser and server, including compression, file size (which you could compare to the file size on the server).

Retaining file permissions with Git

In case you are coming into this right now, I've just been through it today and can summarize where this stands. If you did not try this yet, some details here might help.

I think @Omid Ariyan's approach is the best way. Add the pre-commit and post-checkout scripts. DON'T forget to name them exactly the way Omid does and DON'T forget to make them executable. If you forget either of those, they have no effect and you run "git commit" over and over wondering why nothing happens :) Also, if you cut and paste out of the web browser, be careful that the quotation marks and ticks are not altered.

If you run the pre-commit script once (by running a git commit), then the file .permissions will be created. You can add it to the repository and I think it is unnecessary to add it over and over at the end of the pre-commit script. But it does not hurt, I think (hope).

There are a few little issues about the directory name and the existence of spaces in the file names in Omid's scripts. The spaces were a problem here and I had some trouble with the IFS fix. For the record, this pre-commit script did work correctly for me:

In the comments about this approach, one of the posters complains that it only works with same username, and that is technically true, but it is very easy to fix it. Note the post-checkout script has 2 action pieces,

So I am only keeping the first one, that's all I need. My user name on the Web server is indeed different, but more importantly you can't run chown unless you are root. Can run "chgrp", however. It is plain enough how to put that to use.

In the first answer in this post, the one that is most widely accepted, the suggestion is so use git-cache-meta, a script that is doing the same work that the pre/post hook scripts here are doing (parsing output from git ls-files). These scripts are easier for me to understand, the git-cache-meta code is rather more elaborate. It is possible to keep git-cache-meta in the path and write pre-commit and post-checkout scripts that would use it.

Spaces in file names are a problem with both of Omid's scripts. In the post-checkout script, you'll know you have the spaces in file names if you see errors like this

Since the permissions information is one line at a time, I set IFS to $, so only line breaks are seen as new things.

I read that it is VERY IMPORTANT to set the IFS environment variable back the way it was! You can see why a shell session might go badly if you leave $ as the only separator.

A VIP swap is an internal change to Azure's routers/load balancers, not an external DNS change. They're just routing traffic to go from one internal [set of] server[s] to another instead. Therefore the DNS info for mysite.cloudapp.net doesn't change at all. Therefore the change for people accessing via the IP bound to mysite.cloudapp.net (and CNAME'd by you) will see the change as soon as the VIP swap is complete.

In my case, Unity turned out to be a red herring. My problem was a result of different projects targeting different versions of .NET. Unity was set up right and everything was registered with the container correctly. Everything compiled fine. But the type was in a class library, and the class library was set to target .NET Framework 4.0. The WebApi project using Unity was set to target .NET Framework 4.5. Changing the class library to also target 4.5 fixed the problem for me.

I discovered this by commenting out the DI constructor and adding default constructor. I commented out the controller methods and had them throw NotImplementedException. I confirmed that I could reach the controller, and seeing my NotImplementedException told me it was instantiating the controller fine. Next, in the default constructor, I manually instantiated the dependency chain instead of relying on Unity. It still compiled, but when I ran it the error message came back. This confirmed for me that I still got the error even when Unity was out of the picture. Finally, I started at the bottom of the chain and worked my way up, commenting out one line at a time and retesting until I no longer got the error message. This pointed me in the direction of the offending class, and from there I figured out that it was isolated to a single assembly.

What is declarative programming?

Declarative programming is the picture, where imperative programming is instructions for painting that picture.

You're writing in a declarative style if you're "Telling it what it is", rather than describing the steps the computer should take to get to where you want it.

When you use XML to mark-up data, you're using declarative programming because you're saying "This is a person, that is a birthday, and over there is a street address".

Some examples of where declarative and imperative programming get combined for greater effect:

You do not need to use the while True: loop in this case. There is a much simpler way to use the time condition directly:

What does '&' do in a C++ declaration?

string * and string& differ in a couple of ways. First of all, the pointer points to the address location of the data. The reference points to the data. If you had the following function:

int foo(string *param1);

You would have to check in the function declaration to make sure that param1 pointed to a valid location. Comparatively:

int foo(string &param1);

Here, it is the caller's responsibility to make sure the pointed to data is valid. You can't pass a "NULL" value, for example, int he second function above.

With regards to your second question, about the method return values being a reference, consider the following three functions:

string &foo();
string *foo();
string foo();

In the first case, you would be returning a reference to the data. If your function declaration looked like this:

string &foo()
{
    string localString = "Hello!";
    return localString;
}

You would probably get some compiler errors, since you are returning a reference to a string that was initialized in the stack for that function. On the function return, that data location is no longer valid. Typically, you would want to return a reference to a class member or something like that.

The second function above returns a pointer in actual memory, so it would stay the same. You would have to check for NULL-pointers, though.

Finally, in the third case, the data returned would be copied into the return value for the caller. So if your function was like this:

string foo()
{
    string localString = "Hello!";
    return localString;
}

You'd be okay, since the string "Hello" would be copied into the return value for that function, accessible in the caller's memory space.

How to update Android Studio automatically?

If you are already using Android Studio, you can update via the built in Update mechanism (Check For Updates); make sure you switch to the canary or beta channels if you're not being offered an update.

To configure automatic update settings, see the Updates dialog of your IDE Preferences or settings. You can then switch to either the canary or beta channels. (The default is "stable" but probably that one fails to automatically inform of updates).

That means you must install simplejson. On newer versions of python, it was included by default into python's distribution, and renamed to json. So if you are on python 2.6+ you should change all instances of simplejson to json.

In this example, I use a Json file to get the data from the embedded spreadsheet, so I can use it in my javascript code and create a bar chart.

I calculate the percentage by adding the values of all the category present in the table and using this formula (you can see it in the script.js file): Percentage (%) = 100 x partial value / total value

It automatically calculates the total and pourcentage even if you add more categories.

I used plotly.js to create my chart, it has a good documentation and lots of examples for beginners, this code gets all the option you want to use:

You could make it dynamically responsive by reinitializing the widget on browser resize, as Io Ctaptceb suggested, but by doing that you run the risk of eating up memory very quickly.

Now, you need to import the classes, which are there under the jar, in your java file. For example,

And if you are not using any IDE, then please look at javac -cp option. However, it's much better idea to package your program in a jar file, and include all the required jars within that. Then, in order to execute your jar, like,

I would use VMs. Create an XP (or whatever) VM using VMware Workstation or similar product, and snapshot it. That is your oldest version. Then perform the upgrades one at a time, and snapshot each time. Then you can switch to any snapshot you need later, or clone independent VMs based on all the snapshots so you can run them all at once. You probably want to test on different operating systems as well as different versions, so VMs generalize that solution as well rather than some one-off solution of hacking multiple IEs to coexist on a single instance of Windows.

I am not sure whether this is a good technique, but I developed the following pattern to unit test private methods:

I don't modify the visibility of the method that I want to test and add an additional method. Instead I am adding an additional public method for every private method I want to test. I call this additional method Test-Port and denote them with the prefix t_. This Test-Port method then simply accesses the according private method.

Additionally I add a boolean flag to the Test-Port method to decide whether I grant access to the private method through the Test-Port method from outside. This flag is then set globally in a static class where I place e.g. other global settings for the application. So I can switch the access to the private methods on and off in one place e.g. in the corresponding unit test.

MySQL has started deprecating SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS functionality with version 8.0.17 onwards.

So, it is always preferred to consider executing your query with LIMIT, and then a second query with COUNT(*) and without LIMIT to determine whether there are additional rows.

From docs:

The SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS query modifier and accompanying FOUND_ROWS() function are deprecated as of MySQL 8.0.17 and will be removed in a future MySQL version.

COUNT(*) is subject to certain optimizations. SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS causes some optimizations to be disabled.

Use these queries instead:

More importantly, it has very unclear semantics in a number of situations. In particular, when a query has multiple query blocks (e.g. with UNION), there's simply no way to calculate the number of “would-have-been” rows at the same time as producing a valid query. As the iterator executor is progressing towards these kinds of queries, it is genuinely difficult to try to retain the same semantics. Furthermore, if there are multiple LIMITs in the query (e.g. for derived tables), it's not necessarily clear to which of them SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS should refer to. Thus, such nontrivial queries will necessarily get different semantics in the iterator executor compared to what they had before.

Finally, most of the use cases where SQL_CALC_FOUND_ROWS would seem useful should simply be solved by other mechanisms than LIMIT/OFFSET. E.g., a phone book should be paginated by letter (both in terms of UX and in terms of index use), not by record number. Discussions are increasingly infinite-scroll ordered by date (again allowing index use), not by paginated by post number. And so on.

Parse JSON String into List<string>

Seems like a bad way to do it (creating two correlated lists) but I'm assuming you have your reasons.

I'd parse the JSON string (which has a typo in your example, it's missing a comma between the two objects) into a strongly-typed object and then use a couple of LINQ queries to get the two lists.
