how to use getSharedPreferences in android

If someone used this:

val sharedPreferences = PreferenceManager.getDefaultSharedPreferences(context)

PreferenceManager is now depricated, refactor to this:

val sharedPreferences = context.getSharedPreferences(context.packageName + "_preferences", Context.MODE_PRIVATE)

Convert list of ints to one number?

Just for completeness, here's a variant that uses print() (works on Python 2.6-3.x):

from __future__ import print_function
try: from cStringIO import StringIO
except ImportError:
     from io import StringIO

def to_int(nums, _s = StringIO()):
    print(*nums, sep='', end='', file=_s)
    s = _s.getvalue()
    _s.truncate(0)
    return int(s)

Time performance of different solutions

I've measured performance of @cdleary's functions. The results are slightly different.

Each function tested with the input list generated by:

def randrange1_10(digit_count): # same as @cdleary
    return [random.randrange(1, 10) for i in xrange(digit_count)]

You may supply your own function via --sequence-creator=yourmodule.yourfunction command-line argument (see below).

The fastest functions for a given number of integers in a list (len(nums) == digit_count) are:

  • len(nums) in 1..30

    def _accumulator(nums):
        tot = 0
        for num in nums:
            tot *= 10
            tot += num
        return tot

  • len(nums) in 30..1000

    def _map(nums):
        return int(''.join(map(str, nums)))

    def _imap(nums):
        return int(''.join(imap(str, nums)))

Get model's fields in Django

_meta is private, but it's relatively stable. There are efforts to formalise it, document it and remove the underscore, which might happen before 1.3 or 1.4. I imagine effort will be made to ensure things are backwards compatible, because lots of people have been using it anyway.

If you're particularly concerned about compatibility, write a function that takes a model and returns the fields. This means if something does change in the future, you only have to change one function.

def get_model_fields(model):
    return model._meta.fields

I believe this will return a list of Field objects. To get the value of each field from the instance, use getattr(instance, field.name).

Update: Django contributors are working on an API to replace the _Meta object as part of a Google Summer of Code. See:

What is parsing in terms that a new programmer would understand?

I'd explain parsing as the process of turning some kind of data into another kind of data.

In practice, for me this is almost always turning a string, or binary data, into a data structure inside my Program.

For example, turning

":Nick!User@Host PRIVMSG #channel :Hello!"

into (C)

struct irc_line {
    char *nick;
    char *user;
    char *host;
    char *command;
    char **arguments;
    char *message;
} sample = { "Nick", "User", "Host", "PRIVMSG", { "#channel" }, "Hello!" }

How to place object files in separate subdirectory

Build from the output directory

Instead of building from the top-level directory, build from the output directory. You can access the source directories by setting the vpath. This option has the advantage that the built-in rules can be used.

build.sh

#!/bin/bash
mkdir -p obj
cp Makefile.template obj/Makefile
cd obj
make "$*"

Makefile

.SUFFIXES:
.SUFFIXES: .c .o

CC=gcc
CPPFLAGS=-Wall
LDLIBS=-lhpdf
VPATH=%.c ../src
VPATH=%.h ../src

objects=kumain.o kudlx.o kusolvesk.o kugetpuz.o kuutils.o \
  kurand.o kuASCboard.o kuPDFs.o kupuzstrings.o kugensud.o \
  kushapes.o

ku : $(objects)

$(objects) : ku.h kudefines.h kuglobals.h kufns.h

.PHONY: clean
clean :
  rm $(objects)

The disadvantage is that error messages do not match the CWD. This can be solved by skipping build.sh and directly building from the obj directory.

Another advantage of this approach is that it's somewhat popular. cmake works in a similar fashion.

Create Rule based on output option

The following solution isn't nice in my opinion, as I really love the built-in rules. However, GNU make doesn't support something like vpath for output directories. And the built-in rules cannot match, as the % in %.o would match obj/foo of obj/foo.o, leaving make with a search in vpath %.c src/ for stuff like src/obj/foo.c, but not src/foo.c.

But this is as close to the built-in rules as you can get, and therefore to my best knowledge the nicest solution that's available.

$(OBJDIR)/%.o: %.c
        $(COMPILE.c) $(OUTPUT_OPTION) $<

Explanation: $(COMPILE.c) $(OUTPUT_OPTION) $< actually is how .c.o is implemented, see http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/make.git/tree/default.c (and it's even mentioned in the manual)

Besides, if $(OBJDIR) would only ever contain auto-gererated files, you could create it on-the-fly with an order-only prerequisite, making the clean rule slightly simpler:

$(OBJDIR):
        mkdir -p $(OBJDIR)

$(OBJDIR)/%.o: %.c | $(OBJDIR)
        $(COMPILE.c) $(OUTPUT_OPTION) $<

.PHONY: clean
clean:
        $(RM) -r $(OBJDIR)

This requires that the feature order-only is available, which you can check using $(filter order-only, $(.FETAURES)). I've checked on Kubuntu 14.04 GNU make 3.81 and OpenSUSE 13.1 GNU make 3.82. Both were built with order-only enabled, and am now left puzzled why Kubuntu 14.04 comes with an older version of GNU make than OpenSUSE 13.1. Anyways, gonna download make 4.1 now :)

What is the difference between cssSelector & Xpath and which is better with respect to performance for cross browser testing?

CSS selectors perform far better than Xpath and it is well documented in Selenium community. Here are some reasons,

  • Xpath engines are different in each browser, hence make them inconsistent
  • IE does not have a native xpath engine, therefore selenium injects its own xpath engine for compatibility of its API. Hence we lose the advantage of using native browser features that WebDriver inherently promotes.
  • Xpath tend to become complex and hence make hard to read in my opinion

However there are some situations where, you need to use xpath, for example, searching for a parent element or searching element by its text (I wouldn't recommend the later).

You can read blog from Simon here . He also recommends CSS over Xpath.

If you are testing content then do not use selectors that are dependent on the content of the elements. That will be a maintenance nightmare for every locale. Try talking with developers and use techniques that they used to externalize the text in the application, like dictionaries or resource bundles etc. Here is my blog that explains it in detail.

Thanks to @parishodak, here is the link which provides the numbers proving that CSS performance is better

What does the symbol \0 mean in a string-literal?

Specifically, I want to mention one situation, by which you may confuse.

What is the difference between "\0" and ""?

The answer is that "\0" represents in array is {0 0} and "" is {0}.

Because "\0" is still a string literal and it will also add "\0" at the end of it. And "" is empty but also add "\0".

Understanding of this will help you understand "\0" deeply.

Comparing two columns, and returning a specific adjacent cell in Excel

I would advise you to swap B and C columns for the reason that I will explain. Then in D2 type: =VLOOKUP(A2, B2:C4, 2, FALSE)

Finally, copy the formula for the remaining cells.

Explanation: VLOOKUP will first find the value of A2 in the range B2 to C4 (second argument). NOTE: VLOOKUP always searches the first column in this range. This is the reason why you have to swap the two columns before doing anything.

Once the exact match is found, it will return the value in the adjacent cell (third argument).

This means that, if you put 1 as the third argument, the function will return the value in the first column of the range (which will be the same value you were looking for). If you put 2, it will return the value from the second column in the range (the value in the adjacent cell-RIGHT SIDE of the found value).

FALSE indicates that you are finding the exact match. If you put TRUE, you will be searching for the approximate match.

How to make a div fill a remaining horizontal space?

I had a similar problem and I found the solution here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/16909141/3934886

The solution is for a fixed center div and liquid side columns.

.center{
    background:#ddd;
    width: 500px;
    float:left;
}

.left{
    background:#999;
    width: calc(50% - 250px);
    float:left;
}

.right{
    background:#999;
    width: calc(50% - 250px);
    float:right;
}

If you want a fixed left column, just change the formula accordingly.

java.net.SocketException: Software caused connection abort: recv failed

This usually means that there was a network error, such as a TCP timeout. I would start by placing a sniffer (wireshark) on the connection to see if you can see any problems. If there is a TCP error, you should be able to see it. Also, you can check your router logs, if this is applicable. If wireless is involved anywhere, that is another source for these kind of errors.

How do I get a list of all the duplicate items using pandas in python?

df[df.duplicated(['ID'], keep=False)]

it'll return all duplicated rows back to you.

According to documentation:

keep : {‘first’, ‘last’, False}, default ‘first’

  • first : Mark duplicates as True except for the first occurrence.
  • last : Mark duplicates as True except for the last occurrence.
  • False : Mark all duplicates as True.

jQuery - simple input validation - "empty" and "not empty"

You could do this

$("#input").blur(function(){
    if($(this).val() == ''){
        alert('empty');
    }
});

http://jsfiddle.net/jasongennaro/Y5P9k/1/

When the input has lost focus that is .blur(), then check the value of the #input.

If it is empty == '' then trigger the alert.

converting string to long in python

longcan only take string convertibles which can end in a base 10 numeral. So, the decimal is causing the harm. What you can do is, float the value before calling the long. If your program is on Python 2.x where int and long difference matters, and you are sure you are not using large integers, you could have just been fine with using int to provide the key as well.

So, the answer is long(float('234.89')) or it could just be int(float('234.89')) if you are not using large integers. Also note that this difference does not arise in Python 3, because int is upgraded to long by default. All integers are long in python3 and call to covert is just int

Magento: get a static block as html in a phtml file

How to correctly use Html.ActionLink with ASP.NET MVC 4 Areas

I hate answering my own question, but @Matt Bodily put me on the right track.

The @Html.Action method actually invokes a controller and renders the view, so that wouldn't work to create a snippet of HTML in my case, as this was causing a recursive function call resulting in a StackOverflowException. The @Url.Action(action, controller, { area = "abc" }) does indeed return the URL, but I finally discovered an overload of Html.ActionLink that provided a better solution for my case:

@Html.ActionLink("Admin", "Index", "Home", new { area = "Admin" }, null)

Note: , null is significant in this case, to match the right signature.

Documentation: @Html.ActionLink (LinkExtensions.ActionLink)

Documentation for this particular overload:

LinkExtensions.ActionLink(Controller, Action, Text, RouteArgs, HtmlAttributes)

It's been difficult to find documentation for these helpers. I tend to search for "Html.ActionLink" when I probably should have searched for "LinkExtensions.ActionLink", if that helps anyone in the future.

Still marking Matt's response as the answer.

Edit: Found yet another HTML helper to solve this:

@Html.RouteLink("Admin", new { action = "Index", controller = "Home", area = "Admin" })

How to deploy a war file in JBoss AS 7?

Can you provide more info on the deployment failure? Is the application's failure to deploy triggering a .war.failed marker file?

The standalone instance Deployment folder ships with automatic deployment enabled by default. The automatic deployment mode automates the same functionality that you use with the manual mode, by using a series of marker files to indicate both the action and status of deployment to the runtime. For example, you can use the unix/linux "touch" command to create a .war.dodeploy marker file to tell the runtime to deploy the application.

It might be useful to know that there are in total five methods of deploying applications to AS7. I touched on this in another topic here : JBoss AS7 *.dodeploy files

I tend to use the Management Console for application management, but I know that the Management CLI is very popular among other uses also. Both are separate to the deployment folder processes. See how you go with the other methods to fit your needs.

If you search for "deploy" in the Admin Guide, you can see a section on the Deployment Scanner and a more general deployment section (including the CLI): https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/AS7/Admin+Guide

Adding an .env file to React Project

1. Create the .env file on your root folder

some sources prefere to use .env.development and .env.production but that's not obligatory.

2. The name of your VARIABLE -must- begin with REACT_APP_YOURVARIABLENAME

it seems that if your environment variable does not start like that so you will have problems

3. Include your variable

to include your environment variable just put on your code process.env.REACT_APP_VARIABLE

You don't have to install any external dependency

Read all files in a folder and apply a function to each data frame

On the contrary, I do think working with list makes it easy to automate such things.

Here is one solution (I stored your four dataframes in folder temp/).

filenames <- list.files("temp", pattern="*.csv", full.names=TRUE)
ldf <- lapply(filenames, read.csv)
res <- lapply(ldf, summary)
names(res) <- substr(filenames, 6, 30)

It is important to store the full path for your files (as I did with full.names), otherwise you have to paste the working directory, e.g.

filenames <- list.files("temp", pattern="*.csv")
paste("temp", filenames, sep="/")

will work too. Note that I used substr to extract file names while discarding full path.

You can access your summary tables as follows:

> res$`df4.csv`
       A              B
 Min.   :0.00   Min.   : 1.00
 1st Qu.:1.25   1st Qu.: 2.25
 Median :3.00   Median : 6.00
 Mean   :3.50   Mean   : 7.00
 3rd Qu.:5.50   3rd Qu.:10.50
 Max.   :8.00   Max.   :16.00

If you really want to get individual summary tables, you can extract them afterwards. E.g.,

for (i in 1:length(res))
  assign(paste(paste("df", i, sep=""), "summary", sep="."), res[[i]])

Javascript Object push() function

    tempData.push( data[index] );

I agree with the correct answer above, but.... your still not giving the index value for the data that you want to add to tempData. Without the [index] value the whole array will be added.

Fastest way to extract frames using ffmpeg?

If the JPEG encoding step is too performance intensive, you could always store the frames uncompressed as BMP images:

ffmpeg -i file.mpg -r 1/1 $filename%03d.bmp

This also has the advantage of not incurring more quality loss through quantization by transcoding to JPEG. (PNG is also lossless but tends to take much longer than JPEG to encode.)

What is the difference between match_parent and fill_parent?

FILL_PARENT is deprecated from the API level 8 and higher and it is renamed for the upper versions as MATCH_PARENT

Both are same FILL_PARENT and MATCH_PARENT,FILL_PARENT was used in the lower version less than API level 8 and MATCH_PATENT are used in higher API level greater than 8.

FILL_PARENT (renamed MATCH_PARENT in API Level 8 and higher), which means that the view wants to be as big as its parent (minus padding)

fill_parent: The view should be as big as its parent (minus padding). This constant is deprecated starting from API Level 8 and is replaced by match_parent.

Search for "does-not-contain" on a DataFrame in pandas

You can use Apply and Lambda to select rows where a column contains any thing in a list. For your scenario :

df[df["col"].apply(lambda x:x not in [word1,word2,word3])]

Apply style to only first level of td tags

I guess you could try

table tr td { color: red; }
table tr td table tr td { color: black; }

Or

body table tr td { color: red; }

where 'body' is a selector for your table's parent

But classes are most likely the right way to go here.

Handling onchange event in HTML.DropDownList Razor MVC

Description

You can use another overload of the DropDownList method. Pick the one you need and pass in a object with your html attributes.

Sample

@Html.DropDownList("CategoryID", null, new { @onchange="location = this.value;" })

More Information

Two decimal places using printf( )

What you want is %.2f, not 2%f.

Also, you might want to replace your %d with a %f ;)

#include <cstdio>
int main()
{
printf("When this number: %f is assigned to 2 dp, it will be: %.2f ", 94.9456, 94.9456);
return 0;
}

This will output:

When this number: 94.945600 is assigned to 2 dp, it will be: 94.95

See here for a full description of the printf formatting options: printf

setting request headers in selenium

I wanted something a bit slimmer for RSpec/Ruby so that the custom code only had to live in one place. Here's my solution:

/spec/support/selenium.rb
...
RSpec.configure do |config|
  config.after(:suite) do
    $custom_headers = nil
  end
end

module RequestWithExtraHeaders
  def headers
    $custom_headers.each do |key, value|
      self.set_header "HTTP_#{key}", value
    end if $custom_headers

    super
  end
end
class ActionDispatch::Request
  prepend RequestWithExtraHeaders
end

Then in my specs:

/specs/features/something_spec.rb
...
$custom_headers = {"Referer" => referer_string}

Chrome dev tools fails to show response even the content returned has header Content-Type:text/html; charset=UTF-8

As described by Gideon, this is a known issue with Chrome that has been open for more than 5 years with no apparent interest in fixing it.

Unfortunately, in my case, the window.onunload = function() { debugger; } workaround didn't work either. So far the best workaround I've found is to use Firefox, which does display response data even after a navigation. The Firefox devtools also have a lot of nice features missing in Chrome, such as syntax highlighting the response data if it is html and automatically parsing it if it is JSON.

PHP Adding 15 minutes to Time value

strtotime returns the current timestamp and date is to format timestamp

  $date=strtotime(date("h:i:sa"))+900;//15*60=900 seconds
  $date=date("h:i:sa",$date);

This will add 15 mins to the current time

How to get system time in Java without creating a new Date

Windows command prompt log to a file

In cmd when you use > or >> the output will be only written on the file. Is it possible to see the output in the cmd windows and also save it in a file. Something similar if you use teraterm, when you can start saving all the log in a file meanwhile you use the console and view it (only for ssh, telnet and serial).

How to split one string into multiple strings separated by at least one space in bash shell?

$ echo "This is   a sentence." | tr -s " " "\012"
This
is
a
sentence.

For checking for spaces, use grep:

$ echo "This is   a sentence." | grep " " > /dev/null
$ echo $?
0
$ echo "Thisisasentence." | grep " " > /dev/null
$ echo $?
1

Is there any method to get the URL without query string?

Just add these two lines to $(document).ready in JS as follow:

$(document).ready(function () {
 $("div.sidebar nav a").removeClass("active");
        $('nav a[href$="'+ window.location.pathname.split("?")[0] +'"]').addClass('active');
});

it is better to use the dollar sign ($) (End with)

$('nav a[href$

instead of (^) (Start with)

$('nav a[href^

because, if you use the (^) sign and you have nested URLs in the navigation menu, (e.g "/account" and "/account/roles")

It will active both of them.

Jackson with JSON: Unrecognized field, not marked as ignorable

This solution is generic when reading json streams and need to get only some fields while fields not mapped correctly in your Domain Classes can be ignored:

import org.codehaus.jackson.annotate.JsonIgnoreProperties;
@JsonIgnoreProperties(ignoreUnknown = true)

A detailed solution would be to use a tool such as jsonschema2pojo to autogenerate the required Domain Classes such as Student from the Schema of the json Response. You can do the latter by any online json to schema converter.

jQuery Validation using the class instead of the name value

Since for me, some elements are created on page load, and some are dynamically added by the user; I used this to make sure everything stayed DRY.

On submit, find everything with class x, remove class x, add rule x.

$('#form').on('submit', function(e) {
    $('.alphanumeric_dash').each(function() {
        var $this = $(this);
        $this.removeClass('alphanumeric_dash');
        $(this).rules('add', {
            alphanumeric_dash: true
        });
    });
});

Create a custom View by inflating a layout?

In practice, I have found that you need to be a bit careful, especially if you are using a bit of xml repeatedly. Suppose, for example, that you have a table that you wish to create a table row for each entry in a list. You've set up some xml:

In my_table_row.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<TableRow xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
  android:orientation="vertical"
  android:layout_width="match_parent"
  android:layout_height="match_parent" android:id="@+id/myTableRow">
    <ImageButton android:src="@android:drawable/ic_menu_delete" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@+id/rowButton"/>
    <TextView android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:textAppearance="?android:attr/textAppearanceMedium" android:text="TextView" android:id="@+id/rowText"></TextView>
</TableRow>

Then you want to create it once per row with some code. It assume that you have defined a parent TableLayout myTable to attach the Rows to.

for (int i=0; i<numRows; i++) {
    /*
     * 1. Make the row and attach it to myTable. For some reason this doesn't seem
     * to return the TableRow as you might expect from the xml, so you need to
     * receive the View it returns and then find the TableRow and other items, as
     * per step 2.
     */
    LayoutInflater inflater = (LayoutInflater)getBaseContext().getSystemService(Context.LAYOUT_INFLATER_SERVICE);
    View v =  inflater.inflate(R.layout.my_table_row, myTable, true);

    // 2. Get all the things that we need to refer to to alter in any way.
    TableRow    tr        = (TableRow)    v.findViewById(R.id.profileTableRow);
    ImageButton rowButton = (ImageButton) v.findViewById(R.id.rowButton);
    TextView    rowText   = (TextView)    v.findViewById(R.id.rowText);

    // 3. Configure them out as you need to
    rowText.setText("Text for this row");
    rowButton.setId(i); // So that when it is clicked we know which one has been clicked!
    rowButton.setOnClickListener(this); // See note below ...

    /*
     * To ensure that when finding views by id on the next time round this
     * loop (or later) gie lots of spurious, unique, ids.
     */
    rowText.setId(1000+i);
    tr.setId(3000+i);
}

For a clear simple example on handling rowButton.setOnClickListener(this), see Onclicklistener for a programatically created button.

How do I get the full url of the page I am on in C#

if you need the full URL as everything from the http to the querystring you will need to concatenate the following variables

Request.ServerVariables("HTTPS") // to check if it's HTTP or HTTPS
Request.ServerVariables("SERVER_NAME")
Request.ServerVariables("SCRIPT_NAME")
Request.ServerVariables("QUERY_STRING")

Htaccess: add/remove trailing slash from URL

To complement Jon Lin's answer, here is a no-trailing-slash technique that also works if the website is located in a directory (like example.org/blog/):

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} (.+)/$
RewriteRule ^ %1 [R=301,L]

For the sake of completeness, here is an alternative emphasizing that REQUEST_URI starts with a slash (at least in .htaccess files):

RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} /(.*)/$
RewriteRule ^ /%1 [R=301,L] <-- added slash here too, don't forget it

Just don't use %{REQUEST_URI} (.*)/$. Because in the root directory REQUEST_URI equals /, the leading slash, and it would be misinterpreted as a trailing slash.

Is it safe to shallow clone with --depth 1, create commits, and pull updates again?

Note that Git 1.9/2.0 (Q1 2014) has removed that limitation.
See commit 82fba2b, from Nguy?n Thái Ng?c Duy (pclouds):

Now that git supports data transfer from or to a shallow clone, these limitations are not true anymore.

The documentation now reads:

--depth <depth>::

Create a 'shallow' clone with a history truncated to the specified number of revisions.

That stems from commits like 0d7d285, f2c681c, and c29a7b8 which support clone, send-pack /receive-pack with/from shallow clones.
smart-http now supports shallow fetch/clone too.

All the details are in "shallow.c: the 8 steps to select new commits for .git/shallow".

Update June 2015: Git 2.5 will even allow for fetching a single commit!
(Ultimate shallow case)

Update January 2016: Git 2.8 (Mach 2016) now documents officially the practice of getting a minimal history.
See commit 99487cf, commit 9cfde9e (30 Dec 2015), commit 9cfde9e (30 Dec 2015), commit bac5874 (29 Dec 2015), and commit 1de2e44 (28 Dec 2015) by Stephen P. Smith (``).
(Merged by Junio C Hamano -- gitster -- in commit 7e3e80a, 20 Jan 2016)

This is "Documentation/user-manual.txt"

A <<def_shallow_clone,shallow clone>> is created by specifying the git-clone --depth switch.
The depth can later be changed with the git-fetch --depth switch, or full history restored with --unshallow.

Merging inside a <<def_shallow_clone,shallow clone>> will work as long as a merge base is in the recent history.
Otherwise, it will be like merging unrelated histories and may have to result in huge conflicts.
This limitation may make such a repository unsuitable to be used in merge based workflows.

Update 2020:

  • git 2.11.1 introduced option git fetch --shallow-exclude= to prevent fetching all history
  • git 2.11.1 introduced option git fetch --shallow-since= to prevent fetching old commits.

For more on the shallow clone update process, see "How to update a git shallow clone?".

As commented by Richard Michael:

to backfill history: git pull --unshallow

And Olle Härstedt adds in the comments:

To backfill part of the history: git fetch --depth=100.

How to use patterns in a case statement?

Brace expansion doesn't work, but *, ? and [] do. If you set shopt -s extglob then you can also use extended pattern matching:

  • ?() - zero or one occurrences of pattern
  • *() - zero or more occurrences of pattern
  • +() - one or more occurrences of pattern
  • @() - one occurrence of pattern
  • !() - anything except the pattern

Here's an example:

shopt -s extglob
for arg in apple be cd meet o mississippi
do
    # call functions based on arguments
    case "$arg" in
        a*             ) foo;;    # matches anything starting with "a"
        b?             ) bar;;    # matches any two-character string starting with "b"
        c[de] ) baz;; # matches "cd" or "ce"
        me?(e)t ) qux;; # matches "met" or "meet"
        @(a|e|i|o|u)   ) fuzz;;   # matches one vowel
        m+(iss)?(ippi) ) fizz;; # matches "miss" or "mississippi" or others
        * ) bazinga;; # catchall, matches anything not matched above

How to fix broken paste clipboard in VNC on Windows

You likely need to re-start VNC on both ends. i.e. when you say "restarted VNC", you probably just mean the client. But what about the other end? You likely need to re-start that end too. The root cause is likely a conflict. Many apps spy on the clipboard when they shouldn't. And many apps are not forgiving when they go to open the clipboard and can't. Robust ones will retry, others will simply not anticipate a failure and then they get fouled up and need to be restarted. Could be VNC, or it could be another app that's "listening" to the clipboard viewer chain, where it is obligated to pass along notifications to the other apps in the chain. If the notifications aren't sent, then VNC may not even know that there has been a clipboard update.

php exec command (or similar) to not wait for result

There are two possible ways to implement it. The easiest way is direct result to dev/null

exec("run_baby_run > /dev/null 2>&1 &");

But in case you have any other operations to be performed you may consider ignore_user_abort In this case the script will be running even after you close connection.

Location Services not working in iOS 8

I add those key in InfoPlist.strings in iOS 8.4, iPad mini 2. It works too. I don't set any key, like NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription, in my Info.plist.

InfoPlist.strings:

"NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription" = "I need GPS information....";

Base on this thread, it said, as in iOS 7, can be localized in the InfoPlist.strings. In my test, those keys can be configured directly in the file InfoPlist.strings.

So the first thing you need to do is to add one or both of the > following keys to your Info.plist file:

  • NSLocationWhenInUseUsageDescription
  • NSLocationAlwaysUsageDescription

Both of these keys take a string which is a description of why you need location services. You can enter a string like “Location is required to find out where you are” which, as in iOS 7, can be localized in the InfoPlist.strings file.

UPDATE:

I think @IOS's method is better. Add key to Info.plist with empty value and add localized strings to InfoPlist.strings.

How do I copy SQL Azure database to my local development server?

I couldn't get the SSIS import / export to work as I got the error 'Failure inserting into the read-only column "id"'. Nor could I get http://sqlazuremw.codeplex.com/ to work, and the links above to SQL Azure Data Sync didn't work for me.

But I found an excellent blog post about BACPAC files: http://dacguy.wordpress.com/2012/01/24/sql-azure-importexport-service-has-hit-production/

In the video in the post the blog post's author runs through six steps:

  1. Make or go to a storage account in the Azure Management Portal. You'll need the Blob URL and the Primary access key of the storage account.

  2. The blog post advises making a new container for the bacpac file and suggests using the Azure Storage Explorer for that. (N.B. you'll need the Blob URL and the Primary access key of the storage account to add it to the Azure Storage Explorer.)

  3. In the Azure Management Portal select the database you want to export and click 'Export' in the Import and Export section of the ribbon.

  4. The resulting dialogue requires your username and password for the database, the blob URL, and the access key. Don't forget to include the container in the blob URL and to include a filename (e.g. https://testazurestorage.blob.core.windows.net/dbbackups/mytable.bacpac).

  5. After you click Finish the database will be exported to the BACPAC file. This can take a while. You may see a zero byte file show up immediately if you check in the Azure Storage Explorer. This is the Import / Export Service checking that it has write access to the blob-store.

  6. Once that is done you can use the Azure Storage Explorer to download the BACPAC file and then in the SQL Server Management Studio right-click your local server's database folder and choose Import Data Tier Application that will start the wizard which reads in the BACPAC file to produce the copy of your Azure database. The wizard can also connect directly to the blob-store to obtain the BACPAC file if you would rather not copy it locally first.

The last step may only be available in the SQL Server 2012 edition of the SQL Server Management Studio (that's the version I am running). I do not have earlier ones on this machine to check. In the blog post the author uses the command line tool DacImportExportCli.exe for the import which I believe is available at http://sqldacexamples.codeplex.com/releases

Add Custom Headers using HttpWebRequest

A simple method of creating the service, adding headers and reading the JSON response,

private static void WebRequest()
{
    const string WEBSERVICE_URL = "<<Web Service URL>>";
    try
    {
        var webRequest = System.Net.WebRequest.Create(WEBSERVICE_URL);
        if (webRequest != null)
        {
            webRequest.Method = "GET";
            webRequest.Timeout = 20000;
            webRequest.ContentType = "application/json";
            webRequest.Headers.Add("Authorization", "Basic dcmGV25hZFzc3VudDM6cGzdCdvQ=");
            using (System.IO.Stream s = webRequest.GetResponse().GetResponseStream())
            {
                using (System.IO.StreamReader sr = new System.IO.StreamReader(s))
                {
                    var jsonResponse = sr.ReadToEnd();
                    Console.WriteLine(String.Format("Response: {0}", jsonResponse));
                }
            }
        }
    }
    catch (Exception ex)
    {
        Console.WriteLine(ex.ToString());

Check if record exists from controller in Rails

ActiveRecord#where will return an ActiveRecord::Relation object (which will never be nil). Try using .empty? on the relation to test if it will return any records.

How do I initialize an empty array in C#?

You can define array size at runtime.

This will allow you to do whatever to dynamically compute the array's size. But, once defined the size is immutable.

Array a = Array.CreateInstance(typeof(string), 5);

Python readlines() usage and efficient practice for reading

The short version is: The efficient way to use readlines() is to not use it. Ever.

I read some doc notes on readlines(), where people has claimed that this readlines() reads whole file content into memory and hence generally consumes more memory compared to readline() or read().

The documentation for readlines() explicitly guarantees that it reads the whole file into memory, and parses it into lines, and builds a list full of strings out of those lines.

But the documentation for read() likewise guarantees that it reads the whole file into memory, and builds a string, so that doesn't help.

On top of using more memory, this also means you can't do any work until the whole thing is read. If you alternate reading and processing in even the most naive way, you will benefit from at least some pipelining (thanks to the OS disk cache, DMA, CPU pipeline, etc.), so you will be working on one batch while the next batch is being read. But if you force the computer to read the whole file in, then parse the whole file, then run your code, you only get one region of overlapping work for the entire file, instead of one region of overlapping work per read.

You can work around this in three ways:

  1. Write a loop around readlines(sizehint), read(size), or readline().
  2. Just use the file as a lazy iterator without calling any of these.
  3. mmap the file, which allows you to treat it as a giant string without first reading it in.

For example, this has to read all of foo at once:

with open('foo') as f:
    lines = f.readlines()
    for line in lines:
        pass

But this only reads about 8K at a time:

with open('foo') as f:
    while True:
        lines = f.readlines(8192)
        if not lines:
            break
        for line in lines:
            pass

And this only reads one line at a time—although Python is allowed to (and will) pick a nice buffer size to make things faster.

with open('foo') as f:
    while True:
        line = f.readline()
        if not line:
            break
        pass

And this will do the exact same thing as the previous:

with open('foo') as f:
    for line in f:
        pass

Meanwhile:

but should the garbage collector automatically clear that loaded content from memory at the end of my loop, hence at any instant my memory should have only the contents of my currently processed file right ?

Python doesn't make any such guarantees about garbage collection.

The CPython implementation happens to use refcounting for GC, which means that in your code, as soon as file_content gets rebound or goes away, the giant list of strings, and all of the strings within it, will be freed to the freelist, meaning the same memory can be reused again for your next pass.

However, all those allocations, copies, and deallocations aren't free—it's much faster to not do them than to do them.

On top of that, having your strings scattered across a large swath of memory instead of reusing the same small chunk of memory over and over hurts your cache behavior.

Plus, while the memory usage may be constant (or, rather, linear in the size of your largest file, rather than in the sum of your file sizes), that rush of mallocs to expand it the first time will be one of the slowest things you do (which also makes it much harder to do performance comparisons).

Putting it all together, here's how I'd write your program:

for filename in os.listdir(input_dir):
    with open(filename, 'rb') as f:
        if filename.endswith(".gz"):
            f = gzip.open(fileobj=f)
        words = (line.split(delimiter) for line in f)
        ... my logic ...

Or, maybe:

for filename in os.listdir(input_dir):
    if filename.endswith(".gz"):
        f = gzip.open(filename, 'rb')
    else:
        f = open(filename, 'rb')
    with contextlib.closing(f):
        words = (line.split(delimiter) for line in f)
        ... my logic ...

Resize image proportionally with MaxHeight and MaxWidth constraints

Like this?

public static void Test()
{
    using (var image = Image.FromFile(@"c:\logo.png"))
    using (var newImage = ScaleImage(image, 300, 400))
    {
        newImage.Save(@"c:\test.png", ImageFormat.Png);
    }
}

public static Image ScaleImage(Image image, int maxWidth, int maxHeight)
{
    var ratioX = (double)maxWidth / image.Width;
    var ratioY = (double)maxHeight / image.Height;
    var ratio = Math.Min(ratioX, ratioY);

    var newWidth = (int)(image.Width * ratio);
    var newHeight = (int)(image.Height * ratio);

    var newImage = new Bitmap(newWidth, newHeight);

    using (var graphics = Graphics.FromImage(newImage))
        graphics.DrawImage(image, 0, 0, newWidth, newHeight);

    return newImage;
}

How to get length of a list of lists in python

You can do it with reduce:

a = [[1, 2, 3], [4, 5, 6], [7, 8, 9], [], [1, 2]]
print(reduce(lambda count, l: count + len(l), a, 0))
# result is 11

Eliminating duplicate values based on only one column of the table

This is where the window function row_number() comes in handy:

SELECT s.siteName, s.siteIP, h.date
FROM sites s INNER JOIN
     (select h.*, row_number() over (partition by siteName order by date desc) as seqnum

Using Switch Statement to Handle Button Clicks

One way of achieving this is to make your class implement OnClickListener and then add it to your buttons like this:

Example:

//make your class implement OnClickListener
public class MyClass implements OnClickListener{

        ...

        //Create your buttons and set their onClickListener to "this"
        Button b1 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.buttonplay);
        b1.setOnClickListener(this);

        Button b2 = (Button) findViewById(R.id.buttonstop);
        b2.setOnClickListener(this);

        ...

        //implement the onClick method here
        public void onClick(View v) {
           // Perform action on click
          switch(v.getId()) {
            case R.id.buttonplay:
              //Play voicefile
              MediaPlayer.create(getBaseContext(), R.raw.voicefile).start();
              break;
            case R.id.buttonstop:
              //Stop MediaPlayer
              MediaPlayer.create(getBaseContext(), R.raw.voicefile).stop();
              break;
          }
       }
}

Android DialogFragment vs Dialog

DialogFragment is basically a Fragment that can be used as a dialog.

Using DialogFragment over Dialog due to the following reasons:

  • DialogFragment is automatically re-created after configuration changes and save & restore flow
  • DialogFragment inherits full Fragment’s lifecycle
  • No more IllegalStateExceptions and leaked window crashes. This was pretty common when the activity was destroyed with the Alert Dialog still there.

How to securely save username/password (local)?

If you are just going to verify/validate the entered user name and password, use the Rfc2898DerivedBytes class (also known as Password Based Key Derivation Function 2 or PBKDF2). This is more secure than using encryption like Triple DES or AES because there is no practical way to go from the result of RFC2898DerivedBytes back to the password. You can only go from a password to the result. See Is it ok to use SHA1 hash of password as a salt when deriving encryption key and IV from password string? for an example and discussion for .Net or String encrypt / decrypt with password c# Metro Style for WinRT/Metro.

If you are storing the password for reuse, such as supplying it to a third party, use the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI). This uses operating system generated and protected keys and the Triple DES encryption algorithm to encrypt and decrypt information. This means your application does not have to worry about generating and protecting the encryption keys, a major concern when using cryptography.

In C#, use the System.Security.Cryptography.ProtectedData class. For example, to encrypt a piece of data, use ProtectedData.Protect():

// Data to protect. Convert a string to a byte[] using Encoding.UTF8.GetBytes().
byte[] plaintext;

// Generate additional entropy (will be used as the Initialization vector)
byte[] entropy = new byte[20];
using(RNGCryptoServiceProvider rng = new RNGCryptoServiceProvider())
{
    rng.GetBytes(entropy);
}

byte[] ciphertext = ProtectedData.Protect(plaintext, entropy,
    DataProtectionScope.CurrentUser);

Store the entropy and ciphertext securely, such as in a file or registry key with permissions set so only the current user can read it. To get access to the original data, use ProtectedData.Unprotect():

byte[] plaintext= ProtectedData.Unprotect(ciphertext, entropy,
    DataProtectionScope.CurrentUser);

Note that there are additional security considerations. For example, avoid storing secrets like passwords as a string. Strings are immutable, being they cannot be notified in memory so someone looking at the application's memory or a memory dump may see the password. Use SecureString or a byte[] instead and remember to dispose or zero them as soon as the password is no longer needed.

Powershell Invoke-WebRequest Fails with SSL/TLS Secure Channel

If, like me, none of the above quite works, it might be worth also specifically trying a lower TLS version alone. I had tried both of the following, but didn't seem to solve my problem:

[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = "tls12, tls11, tls"
[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls12 -bor [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls11 -bor [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls

In the end, it was only when I targetted TLS 1.0 (specifically remove 1.1 and 1.2 in the code) that it worked:

[Net.ServicePointManager]::SecurityProtocol = [Net.SecurityProtocolType]::Tls

The local server (that this was being attempted on) is fine with TLS 1.2, although the remote server (which was previously "confirmed" as fine for TLS 1.2 by a 3rd party) seems not to be.

Hope this helps someone.

Rename specific column(s) in pandas

How do I rename a specific column in pandas?

From v0.24+, to rename one (or more) columns at a time,

If you need to rename ALL columns at once,

  • DataFrame.set_axis() method with axis=1. Pass a list-like sequence. Options are available for in-place modification as well.

rename with axis=1

df = pd.DataFrame('x', columns=['y', 'gdp', 'cap'], index=range(5))
df

   y gdp cap
0  x   x   x
1  x   x   x
2  x   x   x
3  x   x   x
4  x   x   x

With 0.21+, you can now specify an axis parameter with rename:

df.rename({'gdp':'log(gdp)'}, axis=1)
# df.rename({'gdp':'log(gdp)'}, axis='columns')

   y log(gdp) cap
0  x        x   x
1  x        x   x
2  x        x   x
3  x        x   x
4  x        x   x

(Note that rename is not in-place by default, so you will need to assign the result back.)

This addition has been made to improve consistency with the rest of the API. The new axis argument is analogous to the columns parameter—they do the same thing.

df.rename(columns={'gdp': 'log(gdp)'})

   y log(gdp) cap
0  x        x   x
1  x        x   x
2  x        x   x
3  x        x   x
4  x        x   x

rename also accepts a callback that is called once for each column.

df.rename(lambda x: x[0], axis=1)
# df.rename(lambda x: x[0], axis='columns')

   y  g  c
0  x  x  x
1  x  x  x
2  x  x  x
3  x  x  x
4  x  x  x

For this specific scenario, you would want to use

df.rename(lambda x: 'log(gdp)' if x == 'gdp' else x, axis=1)

Index.str.replace

Similar to replace method of strings in python, pandas Index and Series (object dtype only) define a ("vectorized") str.replace method for string and regex-based replacement.

df.columns = df.columns.str.replace('gdp', 'log(gdp)')
df

   y log(gdp) cap
0  x        x   x
1  x        x   x
2  x        x   x
3  x        x   x
4  x        x   x

The advantage of this over the other methods is that str.replace supports regex (enabled by default). See the docs for more information.

Passing a list to set_axis with axis=1

Call set_axis with a list of header(s). The list must be equal in length to the columns/index size. set_axis mutates the original DataFrame by default, but you can specify inplace=False to return a modified copy.

df.set_axis(['cap', 'log(gdp)', 'y'], axis=1, inplace=False)
# df.set_axis(['cap', 'log(gdp)', 'y'], axis='columns', inplace=False)

  cap log(gdp)  y
0   x        x  x
1   x        x  x
2   x        x  x
3   x        x  x
4   x        x  x

Note: In future releases, inplace will default to True.

Method Chaining
Why choose set_axis when we already have an efficient way of assigning columns with df.columns = ...? As shown by Ted Petrou in this answer set_axis is useful when trying to chain methods.

Compare

# new for pandas 0.21+
df.some_method1()
  .some_method2()
  .set_axis()
  .some_method3()

Versus

# old way
df1 = df.some_method1()
        .some_method2()
df1.columns = columns
df1.some_method3()

The former is more natural and free flowing syntax.

Gaussian filter in MATLAB

In MATLAB R2015a or newer, it is no longer necessary (or advisable from a performance standpoint) to use fspecial followed by imfilter since there is a new function called imgaussfilt that performs this operation in one step and more efficiently.

The basic syntax:

B = imgaussfilt(A,sigma) filters image A with a 2-D Gaussian smoothing kernel with standard deviation specified by sigma.

The size of the filter for a given Gaussian standard deviation (sigam) is chosen automatically, but can also be specified manually:

B = imgaussfilt(A,sigma,'FilterSize',[3 3]);

The default is 2*ceil(2*sigma)+1.

Additional features of imgaussfilter are ability to operate on gpuArrays, filtering in frequency or spacial domain, and advanced image padding options. It looks a lot like IPP... hmmm. Plus, there's a 3D version called imgaussfilt3.

jQuery - Add active class and remove active from other element on click

Try this

$(document).ready(function() {
$(".tab").click(function () {
    $(".tab").removeClass("active");
    // $(".tab").addClass("active"); // instead of this do the below
    $(this).addClass("active");
});
});

when you are using $(".tab").addClass("active");, it targets all the elements with class name .tab. Instead when you use this it looks for the element which has an event, in your case the element which is clicked.

Hope this helps you.

How to set time delay in javascript

There are two (mostly used) types of timer function in javascript setTimeout and setInterval (other)

Both these methods have same signature. They take a call back function and delay time as parameter.

setTimeout executes only once after the delay whereas setInterval keeps on calling the callback function after every delay milisecs.

both these methods returns an integer identifier that can be used to clear them before the timer expires.

clearTimeout and clearInterval both these methods take an integer identifier returned from above functions setTimeout and setInterval

Example:

setTimeout

alert("before setTimeout");

setTimeout(function(){
        alert("I am setTimeout");
   },1000); //delay is in milliseconds

  alert("after setTimeout");

If you run the the above code you will see that it alerts before setTimeout and then after setTimeout finally it alerts I am setTimeout after 1sec (1000ms)

What you can notice from the example is that the setTimeout(...) is asynchronous which means it doesn't wait for the timer to get elapsed before going to next statement i.e alert("after setTimeout");

Example:

setInterval

alert("before setInterval"); //called first

 var tid = setInterval(function(){
        //called 5 times each time after one second
      //before getting cleared by below timeout.
        alert("I am setInterval");
   },1000); //delay is in milliseconds

  alert("after setInterval"); //called second

setTimeout(function(){
     clearInterval(tid); //clear above interval after 5 seconds
},5000);

If you run the the above code you will see that it alerts before setInterval and then after setInterval finally it alerts I am setInterval 5 times after 1sec (1000ms) because the setTimeout clear the timer after 5 seconds or else every 1 second you will get alert I am setInterval Infinitely.

How browser internally does that?

I will explain in brief.

To understand that you have to know about event queue in javascript. There is a event queue implemented in browser. Whenever an event get triggered in js, all of these events (like click etc.. ) are added to this queue. When your browser has nothing to execute it takes an event from queue and executes them one by one.

Now, when you call setTimeout or setInterval your callback get registered to an timer in browser and it gets added to the event queue after the given time expires and eventually javascript takes the event from the queue and executes it.

This happens so, because javascript engine are single threaded and they can execute only one thing at a time. So, they cannot execute other javascript and keep track of your timer. That is why these timers are registered with browser (browser are not single threaded) and it can keep track of timer and add an event in the queue after the timer expires.

same happens for setInterval only in this case the event is added to the queue again and again after the specified interval until it gets cleared or browser page refreshed.

Note

The delay parameter you pass to these functions is the minimum delay time to execute the callback. This is because after the timer expires the browser adds the event to the queue to be executed by the javascript engine but the execution of the callback depends upon your events position in the queue and as the engine is single threaded it will execute all the events in the queue one by one.

Hence, your callback may sometime take more than the specified delay time to be called specially when your other code blocks the thread and not giving it time to process what's there in the queue.

And as I mentioned javascript is single thread. So, if you block the thread for long.

Like this code

while(true) { //infinite loop
}

Your user may get a message saying page not responding.

What is the difference between persist() and merge() in JPA and Hibernate?

This is coming from JPA. In a very simple way:

  • persist(entity) should be used with totally new entities, to add them to DB (if entity already exists in DB there will be EntityExistsException throw).

  • merge(entity) should be used, to put entity back to persistence context if the entity was detached and was changed.

How to avoid warning when introducing NAs by coercion

suppressWarnings() has already been mentioned. An alternative is to manually convert the problematic characters to NA first. For your particular problem, taRifx::destring does just that. This way if you get some other, unexpected warning out of your function, it won't be suppressed.

> library(taRifx)
> x <- as.numeric(c("1", "2", "X"))
Warning message:
NAs introduced by coercion
> y <- destring(c("1", "2", "X"))
> y
[1]  1  2 NA
> x
[1]  1  2 NA

Change first commit of project with Git?

As mentioned by ecdpalma below, git 1.7.12+ (August 2012) has enhanced the option --root for git rebase:

"git rebase [-i] --root $tip" can now be used to rewrite all the history leading to "$tip" down to the root commit.

That new behavior was initially discussed here:

I personally think "git rebase -i --root" should be made to just work without requiring "--onto" and let you "edit" even the first one in the history.
It is understandable that nobody bothered, as people are a lot less often rewriting near the very beginning of the history than otherwise.

The patch followed.

(original answer, February 2010)

As mentioned in the Git FAQ (and this SO question), the idea is:

  1. Create new temporary branch
  2. Rewind it to the commit you want to change using git reset --hard
  3. Change that commit (it would be top of current HEAD, and you can modify the content of any file)
  4. Rebase branch on top of changed commit, using:

    git rebase --onto <tmp branch> <commit after changed> <branch>`

The trick is to be sure the information you want to remove is not reintroduced by a later commit somewhere else in your file. If you suspect that, then you have to use filter-branch --tree-filter to make sure the content of that file does not contain in any commit the sensible information.

In both cases, you end up rewriting the SHA1 of every commit, so be careful if you have already published the branch you are modifying the contents of. You probably shouldn’t do it unless your project isn’t yet public and other people haven’t based work off the commits you’re about to rewrite.

How to convert C++ Code to C

This is an old thread but apparently the C++ Faq has a section (Archived 2013 version) on this. This apparently will be updated if the author is contacted so this will probably be more up to date in the long run, but here is the current version:

Depends on what you mean. If you mean, Is it possible to convert C++ to readable and maintainable C-code? then sorry, the answer is No — C++ features don't directly map to C, plus the generated C code is not intended for humans to follow. If instead you mean, Are there compilers which convert C++ to C for the purpose of compiling onto a platform that yet doesn't have a C++ compiler? then you're in luck — keep reading.

A compiler which compiles C++ to C does full syntax and semantic checking on the program, and just happens to use C code as a way of generating object code. Such a compiler is not merely some kind of fancy macro processor. (And please don't email me claiming these are preprocessors — they are not — they are full compilers.) It is possible to implement all of the features of ISO Standard C++ by translation to C, and except for exception handling, it typically results in object code with efficiency comparable to that of the code generated by a conventional C++ compiler.

Here are some products that perform compilation to C:

  • Comeau Computing offers a compiler based on Edison Design Group's front end that outputs C code.
  • LLVM is a downloadable compiler that emits C code. See also here and here. Here is an example of C++ to C conversion via LLVM.
  • Cfront, the original implementation of C++, done by Bjarne Stroustrup and others at AT&T, generates C code. However it has two problems: it's been difficult to obtain a license since the mid 90s when it started going through a maze of ownership changes, and development ceased at that same time and so it doesn't get bug fixes and doesn't support any of the newer language features (e.g., exceptions, namespaces, RTTI, member templates).

  • Contrary to popular myth, as of this writing there is no version of g++ that translates C++ to C. Such a thing seems to be doable, but I am not aware that anyone has actually done it (yet).

Note that you typically need to specify the target platform's CPU, OS and C compiler so that the generated C code will be specifically targeted for this platform. This means: (a) you probably can't take the C code generated for platform X and compile it on platform Y; and (b) it'll be difficult to do the translation yourself — it'll probably be a lot cheaper/safer with one of these tools.

One more time: do not email me saying these are just preprocessors — they are not — they are compilers.

Similarity String Comparison in Java

Sounds like a plagiarism finder to me if your string turns into a document. Maybe searching with that term will turn up something good.

"Programming Collective Intelligence" has a chapter on determining whether two documents are similar. The code is in Python, but it's clean and easy to port.

How to embed a PDF viewer in a page?

If I'm not mistaken, the OP was asking (although later accepted a .js solution) whether Google's embedded PDF display server will display a PDF on his own website.

So, one and a half years later: yes, it will.

See http://googlesystem.blogspot.ca/2009/09/embeddable-google-document-viewer.html. Also, see https://docs.google.com/viewer, and plug in the URL of the file you want to display.

Edit: Re-reading, OP was asking for solutions that don't use iFrames. I don't think that's possible with Google's viewer.

dereferencing pointer to incomplete type

I saw a question the other day where someone inadvertently used an incomplete type by specifying something like

struct a {
    int q;
};
struct A *x;
x->q = 3;

The compiler knew that struct A was a struct, despite A being totally undefined, by virtue of the struct keyword.

That was in C++, where such usage of struct is atypical (and, it turns out, can lead to foot-shooting). In C if you do

typedef struct a {
    ...
} a;

then you can use a as the typename and omit the struct later. This will lead the compiler to give you an undefined identifier error later, rather than incomplete type, if you mistype the name or forget a header.

What's the difference between JavaScript and JScript?

Just different names for what is really ECMAScript. John Resig has a good explanation.

Here's the full version breakdown:

  • IE 6-7 support JScript 5 (which is equivalent to ECMAScript 3, JavaScript 1.5)
  • IE 8 supports JScript 6 (which is equivalent to ECMAScript 3, JavaScript 1.5 - more bug fixes over JScript 5)
  • Firefox 1.0 supports JavaScript 1.5 (ECMAScript 3 equivalent)
  • Firefox 1.5 supports JavaScript 1.6 (1.5 + Array Extras + E4X + misc.)
  • Firefox 2.0 supports JavaScript 1.7 (1.6 + Generator + Iterators + let + misc.)
  • Firefox 3.0 supports JavaScript 1.8 (1.7 + Generator Expressions + Expression Closures + misc.)
  • The next version of Firefox will support JavaScript 1.9 (1.8 + To be determined)
  • Opera supports a language that is equivalent to ECMAScript 3 + Getters and Setters + misc.
  • Safari supports a language that is equivalent to ECMAScript 3 + Getters and Setters + misc.

How can I get the current stack trace in Java?

Tony, as a comment to the accepted answer, has given what seems to be the best answer which actually answers the OP's question:

Arrays.toString(Thread.currentThread().getStackTrace()).replace( ',', '\n' );

... the OP did NOT ask how to get a String from the stack trace from an Exception. And although I'm a huge fan of Apache Commons, when there is something as simple as the above there is no logical reason to use an outside library.

Calculate age given the birth date in the format YYYYMMDD

All the answers I tested here (about half) think 2000-02-29 to 2001-02-28 is zero years, when it most likely should be 1 since 2000-02-29 to 2001-03-01 is 1 year and 1 day. Here is a getYearDiff function that fixes that. It only works where d0 < d1:

function getYearDiff(d0, d1) {

    d1 = d1 || new Date();

    var m = d0.getMonth();
    var years = d1.getFullYear() - d0.getFullYear();

    d0.setFullYear(d0.getFullYear() + years);

    if (d0.getMonth() != m) d0.setDate(0);

    return d0 > d1? --years : years;
}

You can use "<pre>(.*?)</pre>", (replacing pre with whatever text you want) and extract the first group (for more specific instructions specify a language) but this assumes the simplistic notion that you have very simple and valid HTML.

What does the variable $this mean in PHP?

The best way to learn about the $this variable in PHP is to try it against the interpreter in various contexts:

print isset($this);              //true,   $this exists
print gettype($this);            //Object, $this is an object
print is_array($this);           //false,  $this isn't an array
print get_object_vars($this); //true, $this's variables are an array
print is_object($this); //true, $this is still an object
print get_class($this);          //YourProject\YourFile\YourClass
print get_parent_class($this);   //YourBundle\YourStuff\YourParentClass
print gettype($this->container); //object
print_r($this);                  //delicious data dump of $this
print $this->yourvariable        //access $this variable with ->

So the $this pseudo-variable has the Current Object's method's and properties. Such a thing is useful because it lets you access all member variables and member methods inside the class. For example:

Class Dog{
    public $my_member_variable;                             //member variable

    function normal_method_inside_Dog() {                   //member method

        //Assign data to member variable from inside the member method
        $this->my_member_variable = "whatever";

        //Get data from member variable from inside the member method.
        print $this->my_member_variable;
    }
}

$this is reference to a PHP Object that was created by the interpreter for you, that contains an array of variables.

If you call $this inside a normal method in a normal class, $this returns the Object (the class) to which that method belongs.

It's possible for $this to be undefined if the context has no parent Object.

php.net has a big page talking about PHP object oriented programming and how $this behaves depending on context. https://www.php.net/manual/en/language.oop5.basic.php

How to get screen dimensions as pixels in Android

If you want the display dimensions in pixels you can use getSize:

Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay();
Point size = new Point();
display.getSize(size);
int width = size.x;
int height = size.y;

If you're not in an Activity you can get the default Display via WINDOW_SERVICE:

WindowManager wm = (WindowManager) context.getSystemService(Context.WINDOW_SERVICE);
Display display = wm.getDefaultDisplay();

If you are in a fragment and want to acomplish this just use Activity.WindowManager (in Xamarin.Android) or getActivity().getWindowManager() (in java).

Before getSize was introduced (in API level 13), you could use the getWidth and getHeight methods that are now deprecated:

Display display = getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay();
int width = display.getWidth();  // deprecated
int height = display.getHeight();  // deprecated

For the use case you're describing however, a margin/padding in the layout seems more appropriate.

Another way is: DisplayMetrics

A structure describing general information about a display, such as its size, density, and font scaling. To access the DisplayMetrics members, initialize an object like this:

DisplayMetrics metrics = new DisplayMetrics();
getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay().getMetrics(metrics);

We can use widthPixels to get information for:

"The absolute width of the display in pixels."

Example:

Log.d("ApplicationTagName", "Display width in px is " + metrics.widthPixels);

Api level 30 update

final WindowMetrics metrics = windowManager.getCurrentWindowMetrics();
 // Gets all excluding insets
 final WindowInsets windowInsets = metrics.getWindowInsets();
 Insets insets = windowInsets.getInsetsIgnoreVisibility(WindowInsets.Type.navigationBars()
         | WindowInsets.Type.displayCutout());

 int insetsWidth = insets.right + insets.left;
 int insetsHeight = insets.top + insets.bottom;

 // Legacy size that Display#getSize reports
 final Rect bounds = metrics.getBounds();
 final Size legacySize = new Size(bounds.width() - insetsWidth,
         bounds.height() - insetsHeight);

Numpy `ValueError: operands could not be broadcast together with shape ...`

If X and beta do not have the same shape as the second term in the rhs of your last line (i.e. nsample), then you will get this type of error. To add an array to a tuple of arrays, they all must be the same shape.

I would recommend looking at the numpy broadcasting rules.

receiving json and deserializing as List of object at spring mvc controller

Solution works very well,

public List<String> savePerson(@RequestBody Person[] personArray)

For this signature you can pass Person array from postman like

[
{
  "empId": "10001",
  "tier": "Single",
  "someting": 6,
  "anything": 0,
  "frequency": "Quaterly"
}, {
  "empId": "10001",
  "tier": "Single",
  "someting": 6,
  "anything": 0,
  "frequency": "Quaterly"
}
]

Don't forget to add consumes tag:

@RequestMapping(value = "/getEmployeeList", method = RequestMethod.POST, consumes="application/json", produces = "application/json")
public List<Employee> getEmployeeDataList(@RequestBody Employee[] employeearray) { ... }

json: cannot unmarshal object into Go value of type

You JSON doesn't match your struct fields: E.g. "district" in JSON and "District" as the field.

Also: Your Item is a slice type but your JSON is a dict value. Do not mix this up. Slices decode from arrays.

Insert entire DataTable into database at once instead of row by row?

Consider this approach, you don't need a for loop:

using (SqlBulkCopy bulkCopy = new SqlBulkCopy(connection))
{
    bulkCopy.DestinationTableName =
        "dbo.BulkCopyDemoMatchingColumns";

    try
    {
        // Write from the source to the destination.
        bulkCopy.WriteToServer(ExitingSqlTableName);
    }
    catch (Exception ex)
    {
        Console.WriteLine(ex.Message);
    }
}

How to call a Python function from Node.js

Example for people who are from Python background and want to integrate their machine learning model in the Node.js application:

It uses the child_process core module:

const express = require('express')
const app = express()

app.get('/', (req, res) => {

    const { spawn } = require('child_process');
    const pyProg = spawn('python', ['./../pypy.py']);

    pyProg.stdout.on('data', function(data) {

        console.log(data.toString());
        res.write(data);
        res.end('end');
    });
})

app.listen(4000, () => console.log('Application listening on port 4000!'))

It doesn't require sys module in your Python script.

Below is a more modular way of performing the task using Promise:

const express = require('express')
const app = express()

let runPy = new Promise(function(success, nosuccess) {

    const { spawn } = require('child_process');
    const pyprog = spawn('python', ['./../pypy.py']);

    pyprog.stdout.on('data', function(data) {

        success(data);
    });

    pyprog.stderr.on('data', (data) => {

        nosuccess(data);
    });
});

app.get('/', (req, res) => {

    res.write('welcome\n');

    runPy.then(function(fromRunpy) {
        console.log(fromRunpy.toString());
        res.end(fromRunpy);
    });
})

app.listen(4000, () => console.log('Application listening on port 4000!'))

Fully custom validation error message with Rails

Yes, there's a way to do this without the plugin! But it is not as clean and elegant as using the mentioned plugin. Here it is.

Assuming it's Rails 3 (I don't know if it's different in previous versions),

keep this in your model:

validates_presence_of :song_rep_xyz, :message => "can't be empty"

and in the view, instead of leaving

@instance.errors.full_messages

as it would be when we use the scaffold generator, put:

@instance.errors.first[1]

And you will get just the message you specified in the model, without the attribute name.

Explanation:

#returns an hash of messages, one element foreach field error, in this particular case would be just one element in the hash:
@instance.errors  # => {:song_rep_xyz=>"can't be empty"}

#this returns the first element of the hash as an array like [:key,"value"]
@instance.errors.first # => [:song_rep_xyz, "can't be empty"]

#by doing the following, you are telling ruby to take just the second element of that array, which is the message.
@instance.errors.first[1]

So far we are just displaying only one message, always for the first error. If you wanna display all errors you can loop in the hash and show the values.

Hope that helped.

How do you list volumes in docker containers?

You can get information about which volumes were specifically baked into the container by inspecting the container and looking in the JSON output and comparing a couple of the fields. When you run docker inspect myContainer, the Volumes and VolumesRW fields give you information about ALL of the volumes mounted inside a container, including volumes mounted in both the Dockerfile with the VOLUME directive, and on the command line with the docker run -v command. However, you can isolate which volumes were mounted in the container using the docker run -v command by checking for the HostConfig.Binds field in the docker inspect JSON output. To clarify, this HostConfig.Binds field tells you which volumes were mounted specifically in your docker run command with the -v option. So if you cross-reference this field with the Volumes field, you will be able to determine which volumes were baked into the container using VOLUME directives in the Dockerfile.

A grep could accomplish this like:

$ docker inspect myContainer | grep -C2 Binds
...
"HostConfig": {
    "Binds": [
        "/var/docker/docker-registry/config:/registry"
    ],

And...

$ docker inspect myContainer | grep -C3 -e "Volumes\":"
...
"Volumes": {
    "/data": "/var/lib/docker...",
    "/config": "/var/lib/docker...",
    "/registry": "/var/docker/docker-registry/config"

And in my example, you can see I've mounted /var/docker/docker-registry/config into the container as /registry using the -v option in my docker run command, and I've mounted the /data and /config volumes using the VOLUME directive in my Dockerfile. The container does not need to be running to get this information, but it needs to have been run at least one time in order to populate the HostConfig JSON output of your docker inspect command.

Deserialize a JSON array in C#

This should work...

JavaScriptSerializer ser = new JavaScriptSerializer();
var records = new ser.Deserialize<List<Record>>(jsonData);

public class Person
{
    public string Name;
    public int Age;
    public string Location;
}
public class Record
{
    public Person record;
}

How to force remounting on React components?

What's probably happening is that React thinks that only one MyInput (unemployment-duration) is added between the renders. As such, the job-title never gets replaced with the unemployment-reason, which is also why the predefined values are swapped.

When React does the diff, it will determine which components are new and which are old based on their key property. If no such key is provided in the code, it will generate its own.

The reason why the last code snippet you provide works is because React essentially needs to change the hierarchy of all elements under the parent div and I believe that would trigger a re-render of all children (which is why it works). Had you added the span to the bottom instead of the top, the hierarchy of the preceding elements wouldn't change, and those element's wouldn't re-render (and the problem would persist).

Here's what the official React documentation says:

The situation gets more complicated when the children are shuffled around (as in search results) or if new components are added onto the front of the list (as in streams). In these cases where the identity and state of each child must be maintained across render passes, you can uniquely identify each child by assigning it a key.

When React reconciles the keyed children, it will ensure that any child with key will be reordered (instead of clobbered) or destroyed (instead of reused).

You should be able to fix this by providing a unique key element yourself to either the parent div or to all MyInput elements.

For example:

render(){
    if (this.state.employed) {
        return (
            <div key="employed">
                <MyInput ref="job-title" name="job-title" />
            </div>
        );
    } else {
        return (
            <div key="notEmployed">
                <MyInput ref="unemployment-reason" name="unemployment-reason" />
                <MyInput ref="unemployment-duration" name="unemployment-duration" />
            </div>
        );
    }
}

OR

render(){
    if (this.state.employed) {
        return (
            <div>
                <MyInput key="title" ref="job-title" name="job-title" />
            </div>
        );
    } else {
        return (
            <div>
                <MyInput key="reason" ref="unemployment-reason" name="unemployment-reason" />
                <MyInput key="duration" ref="unemployment-duration" name="unemployment-duration" />
            </div>
        );
    }
}

Now, when React does the diff, it will see that the divs are different and will re-render it including all of its' children (1st example). In the 2nd example, the diff will be a success on job-title and unemployment-reason since they now have different keys.

You can of course use any keys you want, as long as they are unique.

Update August 2017

For a better insight into how keys work in React, I strongly recommend reading my answer to Understanding unique keys in React.js.

Update November 2017

This update should've been posted a while ago, but using string literals in ref is now deprecated. For example ref="job-title" should now instead be ref={(el) => this.jobTitleRef = el} (for example). See my answer to Deprecation warning using this.refs for more info.

Why does .json() return a promise?

In addition to the above answers here is how you might handle a 500 series response from your api where you receive an error message encoded in json:

function callApi(url) {
  return fetch(url)
    .then(response => {
      if (response.ok) {
        return response.json().then(response => ({ response }));
      }

      return response.json().then(error => ({ error }));
    })
  ;
}

let url = 'http://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/posts/6';

const { response, error } = callApi(url);
if (response) {
  // handle json decoded response
} else {
  // handle json decoded 500 series response
}

Trigger Change event when the Input value changed programmatically?

Vanilla JS solution:

var el = document.getElementById('changeProgramatic');
el.value='New Value'
el.dispatchEvent(new Event('change'));

Note that dispatchEvent doesn't work in old IE (see: caniuse). So you should probably only use it on internal websites (not on websites having wide audience).

So as of 2019 you just might want to make sure your customers/audience don't use Windows XP (yes, some still do in 2019). You might want to use conditional comments to warn customers that you don't support old IE (pre IE 11 in this case), but note that conditional comments only work until IE9 (don't work in IE10). So you might want to use feature detection instead. E.g. you could do an early check for: typeof document.body.dispatchEvent === 'function'.

How to change color of SVG image using CSS (jQuery SVG image replacement)?

There is an open source library called SVGInject that uses the onload attribute to trigger the injection. You can find the GitHub project at https://github.com/iconfu/svg-inject

Here is a minimal example using SVGInject:

<html>
  <head>
    <script src="svg-inject.min.js"></script>
  </head>
  <body>
    <img src="image.svg" onload="SVGInject(this)" />
  </body>
</html>

After the image is loaded the onload="SVGInject(this) will trigger the injection and the <img> element will be replaced by the contents of the SVG file provided in the src attribute.

It solves several issues with SVG injection:

  1. SVGs can be hidden until injection has finished. This is important if a style is already applied during load time, which would otherwise cause a brief "unstyled content flash".

  2. The <img> elements inject themselved automatically. If you add SVGs dynamically, you don't have to worry about calling the injection function again.

  3. A random string is added to each ID in the SVG to avoid having the same ID multiple times in the document if an SVG is injected more than once.

SVGInject is plain Javascript and works with all browsers that support SVG.

Disclaimer: I am the co-author of SVGInject

AngularJS does not send hidden field value

Found a strange behaviour about this hidden value () and we can't make it to work.

After playing around we found the best way is just defined the value in controller itself after the form scope.

.controller('AddController', [$scope, $http, $state, $stateParams, function($scope, $http, $state, $stateParams) {

    $scope.routineForm = {};
    $scope.routineForm.hiddenfield1 = "whatever_value_you_pass_on";

    $scope.sendData = function {

// JSON http post action to API
}

}])

How to enable LogCat/Console in Eclipse for Android?

In Eclipse, Goto Window-> Show View -> Other -> Android-> Logcat.

Logcat is nothing but a console of your Emulator or Device.

System.out.println does not work in Android. So you have to handle every thing in Logcat. More Info Look out this Documentation.

Edit 1: System.out.println is working on Logcat. If you use that the Tag will be like System.out and Message will be your message.

How to update UI from another thread running in another class

Felt the need to add this better answer, as nothing except BackgroundWorker seemed to help me, and the answer dealing with that thus far was woefully incomplete. This is how you would update a XAML page called MainWindow that has an Image tag like this:

<Image Name="imgNtwkInd" Source="Images/network_on.jpg" Width="50" />

with a BackgroundWorker process to show if you are connected to the network or not:

using System.ComponentModel;
using System.Windows;
using System.Windows.Controls;

public partial class MainWindow : Window
{
    private BackgroundWorker bw = new BackgroundWorker();

    public MainWindow()
    {
        InitializeComponent();

        bw.WorkerReportsProgress = true;
        bw.WorkerSupportsCancellation = true;

        // This is your main work process that records progress
        bw.DoWork += new DoWorkEventHandler(SomeClass.DoWork);

        // This will update your page based on that progress
        bw.ProgressChanged += new ProgressChangedEventHandler(bw_ProgressChanged);

        // This starts your background worker and "DoWork()"
        bw.RunWorkerAsync();

React-Native Button style not work

React Native buttons are very limited in the option they provide.You can use TouchableHighlight or TouchableOpacity by styling these element and wrapping your buttons with it like this

             <TouchableHighlight
                style ={{
                    height: 40,
                    width:160,
                    borderRadius:10,
                    backgroundColor : "yellow",
                    marginLeft :50,
                    marginRight:50,
                    marginTop :20
                }}>
            <Button onPress={this._onPressButton}
            title="SAVE"
            accessibilityLabel="Learn more about this button"
          />
          </TouchableHighlight>

You can also use react library for customised button .One nice library is react-native-button (https://www.npmjs.com/package/react-native-button)

How to implement class constructor in Visual Basic?

A class with a field:

   Public StudentId As Integer

The constructor:

    Public Sub New(newStudentId As Integer)
        StudentId = newStudentId
    End Sub
End Class

Assign output of a program to a variable using a MS batch file

One way is:

application arg0 arg1 > temp.txt
set /p VAR=<temp.txt

Another is:

for /f %%i in ('application arg0 arg1') do set VAR=%%i

Note that the first % in %%i is used to escape the % after it and is needed when using the above code in a batch file rather than on the command line. Imagine, your test.bat has something like:

Accessing private member variables from prototype-defined functions

Update: With ES6, there is a better way:

Long story short, you can use the new Symbol to create private fields.
Here's a great description: https://curiosity-driven.org/private-properties-in-javascript

Example:

var Person = (function() {
    // Only Person can access nameSymbol
    var nameSymbol = Symbol('name');

    function Person(name) {
        this[nameSymbol] = name;
    }

    Person.prototype.getName = function() {
        return this[nameSymbol];
    };

    return Person;
}());

For all modern browsers with ES5:

You can use just Closures

The simplest way to construct objects is to avoid prototypal inheritance altogether. Just define the private variables and public functions within the closure, and all public methods will have private access to the variables.

Or you can use just Prototypes

In JavaScript, prototypal inheritance is primarily an optimization. It allows multiple instances to share prototype methods, rather than each instance having its own methods.
The drawback is that this is the only thing that's different each time a prototypal function is called.
Therefore, any private fields must be accessible through this, which means they're going to be public. So we just stick to naming conventions for _private fields.

Don't bother mixing Closures with Prototypes

I think you shouldn't mix closure variables with prototype methods. You should use one or the other.

When you use a closure to access a private variable, prototype methods cannot access the variable. So, you have to expose the closure onto this, which means that you're exposing it publicly one way or another. There's very little to gain with this approach.

Which do I choose?

For really simple objects, just use a plain object with closures.

If you need prototypal inheritance -- for inheritance, performance, etc. -- then stick with the "_private" naming convention, and don't bother with closures.

I don't understand why JS developers try SO hard to make fields truly private.

Copying one structure to another

  1. You can use a struct to read write into a file. You do not need to cast it as a `char*. Struct size will also be preserved. (This point is not closest to the topic but guess it: behaving on hard memory is often similar to RAM one.)

  2. To move (to & from) a single string field you must use strncpy and a transient string buffer '\0' terminating. Somewhere you must remember the length of the record string field.

  3. To move other fields you can use the dot notation, ex.: NodeB->one=intvar; floatvar2=(NodeA->insidebisnode_subvar).myfl;

    struct mynode {
        int one;
        int two;
        char txt3[3];
        struct{char txt2[6];}txt2fi;
        struct insidenode{
            char txt[8];
            long int myl;
            void * mypointer;
            size_t myst;
            long long myll;
             } insidenode_subvar;
        struct insidebisnode{
            float myfl;
             } insidebisnode_subvar;
    } mynode_subvar;

    typedef struct mynode* Node;

    ...(main)
    Node NodeA=malloc...
    Node NodeB=malloc...

  4. You can embed each string into a structs that fit it, to evade point-2 and behave like Cobol: NodeB->txt2fi=NodeA->txt2fi ...but you will still need of a transient string plus one strncpy as mentioned at point-2 for scanf, printf otherwise an operator longer input (shorter), would have not be truncated (by spaces padded).

  5. (NodeB->insidenode_subvar).mypointer=(NodeA->insidenode_subvar).mypointer will create a pointer alias.
  6. NodeB.txt3=NodeA.txt3 causes the compiler to reject: error: incompatible types when assigning to type ‘char[3]’ from type ‘char *’
  7. point-4 works only because NodeB->txt2fi & NodeA->txt2fi belong to the same typedef !!

    A correct and simple answer to this topic I found at In C, why can't I assign a string to a char array after it's declared? "Arrays (also of chars) are second-class citizens in C"!!!

Can someone explain how to implement the jQuery File Upload plugin?

it's 2021 and here's a fantastically easy plugin to upload anything:

https://pqina.nl/filepond/?ref=pqina

add your element:

<input type="file"
class="filepond"
name="filepond"
multiple
data-allow-reorder="true"
data-max-file-size="3MB"
data-max-files="3">

Register any additional plugins:

  FilePond.registerPlugin(
FilePondPluginImagePreview,
FilePondPluginImageExifOrientation,
FilePondPluginFileValidateSize,
FilePondPluginImageEdit);

Then wire in the element:

// Select the file input and use
// create() to turn it into a pond
FilePond.create(
  document.querySelector('input'),

  // Use Doka.js as image editor
  imageEditEditor: Doka.create({
    utils: ['crop', 'filter', 'color']
  })
);

I use this with the additional Doka image editor to upload and transform images at https://www.yoodu.co.uk

crazy simple to setup and the guys who run it are great at support.

As you can tell I'm a fanboy.

How to INNER JOIN 3 tables using CodeIgniter

I believe that using CodeIgniters active record framework that you would just use two join statements one after the other.
eg:

$this->db->select('*');
$this->db->from('table1');
$this->db->join('table1', 'table1.id = table2.id');
$this->db->join('table1', 'table1.id = table3.id');
$query = $this->db->get();

Give that a try and see how it goes.

How to get String Array from arrays.xml file

You can't initialize your testArray field this way, because the application resources still aren't ready.

Just change the code to:

package com.xtensivearts.episode.seven;

import android.app.ListActivity;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.widget.ArrayAdapter;

public class Episode7 extends ListActivity {
    String[] mTestArray;

    /** Called when the activity is first created. */
    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);

        // Create an ArrayAdapter that will contain all list items
        ArrayAdapter<String> adapter;

        mTestArray = getResources().getStringArray(R.array.testArray);

        /* Assign the name array to that adapter and
        also choose a simple layout for the list items */
        adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(
            this,
            android.R.layout.simple_list_item_1,
            mTestArray);

        // Assign the adapter to this ListActivity
        setListAdapter(adapter);
    }
}

How do I tell if a regular file does not exist in Bash?

Bash File Testing

-b filename - Block special file
-c filename - Special character file
-d directoryname - Check for directory Existence
-e filename - Check for file existence, regardless of type (node, directory, socket, etc.)
-f filename - Check for regular file existence not a directory
-G filename - Check if file exists and is owned by effective group ID
-G filename set-group-id - True if file exists and is set-group-id
-k filename - Sticky bit
-L filename - Symbolic link
-O filename - True if file exists and is owned by the effective user id
-r filename - Check if file is a readable
-S filename - Check if file is socket
-s filename - Check if file is nonzero size
-u filename - Check if file set-user-id bit is set
-w filename - Check if file is writable
-x filename - Check if file is executable

How to use:

#!/bin/bash
file=./file
if [ -e "$file" ]; then
    echo "File exists"
else
    echo "File does not exist"
fi

A test expression can be negated by using the ! operator

#!/bin/bash
file=./file
if [ ! -e "$file" ]; then
    echo "File does not exist"
else
    echo "File exists"
fi

generate model using user:references vs user_id:integer

how does rails know that user_id is a foreign key referencing user?

Rails itself does not know that user_id is a foreign key referencing user. In the first command rails generate model Micropost user_id:integer it only adds a column user_id however rails does not know the use of the col. You need to manually put the line in the Micropost model

class Micropost < ActiveRecord::Base
  belongs_to :user
end

class User < ActiveRecord::Base
  has_many :microposts
end

the keywords belongs_to and has_many determine the relationship between these models and declare user_id as a foreign key to User model.

The later command rails generate model Micropost user:references adds the line belongs_to :user in the Micropost model and hereby declares as a foreign key.

FYI
Declaring the foreign keys using the former method only lets the Rails know about the relationship the models/tables have. The database is unknown about the relationship. Therefore when you generate the EER Diagrams using software like MySql Workbench you find that there is no relationship threads drawn between the models. Like in the following pic enter image description here

However, if you use the later method you find that you migration file looks like:

def change
    create_table :microposts do |t|
      t.references :user, index: true

      t.timestamps null: false
    end
    add_foreign_key :microposts, :users

Now the foreign key is set at the database level. and you can generate proper EER diagrams. enter image description here

Postgresql, update if row with some unique value exists, else insert

This has been asked many times. A possible solution can be found here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/6527838/552671

This solution requires both an UPDATE and INSERT.

UPDATE table SET field='C', field2='Z' WHERE id=3;
INSERT INTO table (id, field, field2)
       SELECT 3, 'C', 'Z'
       WHERE NOT EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM table WHERE id=3);

With Postgres 9.1 it is possible to do it with one query: https://stackoverflow.com/a/1109198/2873507

using batch echo with special characters

Why not use single quote?

echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>'

output

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

How to get a certain element in a list, given the position?

Maybe not the most efficient way. But you could convert the list into a vector.

#include <list>
#include <vector>

list<Object> myList;

vector<Object> myVector(myList.begin(), myList.end());

Then access the vector using the [x] operator.

auto x = MyVector[0];

You could put that in a helper function:

#include <memory>
#include <vector>
#include <list>

template<class T>
shared_ptr<vector<T>>
ListToVector(list<T> List) {
shared_ptr<vector<T>> Vector {
        new vector<string>(List.begin(), List.end()) }
return Vector;
}

Then use the helper funciton like this:

auto MyVector = ListToVector(Object);
auto x = MyVector[0];

How to dismiss the dialog with click on outside of the dialog?

You can use dialog.setCanceledOnTouchOutside(true); which will close the dialog if you touch outside of the dialog.

Something like,

  Dialog dialog = new Dialog(context)
  dialog.setCanceledOnTouchOutside(true);

Or if your Dialog in non-model then,

1 - Set the flag-FLAG_NOT_TOUCH_MODAL for your dialog's window attribute

Window window = this.getWindow();
window.setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_NOT_TOUCH_MODAL,
WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_NOT_TOUCH_MODAL);

2 - Add another flag to windows properties,, FLAG_WATCH_OUTSIDE_TOUCH - this one is for dialog to receive touch event outside its visible region.

3 - Override onTouchEvent() of dialog and check for action type. if the action type is 'MotionEvent.ACTION_OUTSIDE' means, user is interacting outside the dialog region. So in this case, you can dimiss your dialog or decide what you wanted to perform. view plainprint?

public boolean onTouchEvent(MotionEvent event)
{

       if(event.getAction() == MotionEvent.ACTION_OUTSIDE){
        System.out.println("TOuch outside the dialog ******************** ");
               this.dismiss();
       }
       return false;
}

how do I set height of container DIV to 100% of window height?

Add this to your css:

html, body {
    height:100%;
}

If you say height:100%, you mean '100% of the parent element'. If the parent element has no specified height, nothing will happen. You only set 100% on body, but you also need to add it to html.

Google Maps Api v3 - find nearest markers

The formula above didn't work for me, but I used this without any issue. Pass your current location to the function, and loop through an array of markers to find the closest:

function find_closest_marker( lat1, lon1 ) {
    var pi = Math.PI;
    var R = 6371; //equatorial radius
    var distances = [];
    var closest = -1;

    for( i=0;i<markers.length; i++ ) {
        var lat2 = markers[i].position.lat();
        var lon2 = markers[i].position.lng();

        var chLat = lat2-lat1;
        var chLon = lon2-lon1;

        var dLat = chLat*(pi/180);
        var dLon = chLon*(pi/180);

        var rLat1 = lat1*(pi/180);
        var rLat2 = lat2*(pi/180);

        var a = Math.sin(dLat/2) * Math.sin(dLat/2) +
                    Math.sin(dLon/2) * Math.sin(dLon/2) * Math.cos(rLat1) * Math.cos(rLat2);
        var c = 2 * Math.atan2(Math.sqrt(a), Math.sqrt(1-a));
        var d = R * c;

        distances[i] = d;
        if ( closest == -1 || d < distances[closest] ) {
            closest = i;
        }
    }

    // (debug) The closest marker is:
    console.log(markers[closest]);
}

SQL Server: how to create a stored procedure

In T-SQL stored procedures for input parameters explicit 'in' keyword is not required and for output parameters an explicit 'Output' keyword is required. The query in question can be written as:

CREATE PROCEDURE dept_count
    (
    -- Add input and output parameters for the stored procedure here
    @dept_name varchar(20), --Input parameter
    @d_count int OUTPUT -- Output parameter declared with the help of OUTPUT/OUT keyword

    SET NOCOUNT ON;

     -- Statements for procedure here
    SELECT @d_count = count(*)
    from instructor
      where instructor.dept_name=@dept_name

END
GO

and to execute above procedure we can write as:

Declare @dept_name varchar(20), -- Declaring the variable to collect the dept_name
        @d_count int -- Declaring the variable to collect the d_count
SET @dept_name = 'Test'

    return 1;
}

How do I test which class an object is in Objective-C?

What means about isKindOfClass in Apple Documentation

Be careful when using this method on objects represented by a class cluster. Because of the nature of class clusters, the object you get back may not always be the type you expected. If you call a method that returns a class cluster, the exact type returned by the method is the best indicator of what you can do with that object. For example, if a method returns a pointer to an NSArray object, you should not use this method to see if the array is mutable, as shown in the following code:

// DO NOT DO THIS!
if ([myArray isKindOfClass:[NSMutableArray class]])
{
    // Modify the object
}

If you use such constructs in your code, you might think it is alright to modify an object that in reality should not be modified. Doing so might then create problems for other code that expected the object to remain unchanged.

How to add a touch event to a UIView?

Another way is adding a transparent button to the view

UIButton *b = [UIButton buttonWithType:UIButtonTypeCustom];
b.frame = CGRectMake(0, 0, headerView.width, headerView.height);

[b addTarget:self action:@selector(buttonClicked:) forControlEvents:UIControlEventTouchDown];

And then, handle click:

how to get the ipaddress of a virtual box running on local machine

Login to virtual machine use below command to check ip address. (anyone will work)

  1. ifconfig
  2. ip addr show

If you used NAT for your virtual machine settings(your machine ip will be 10.0.2.15), then you have to use port forwarding to connect to machine. IP address will be 127.0.0.1

If you used bridged networking/Host only networking, then you will have separate Ip address. Use that IP address to connect virtual machine

How to POST form data with Spring RestTemplate?

How to POST mixed data: File, String[], String in one request.

You can use only what you need.

private String doPOST(File file, String[] array, String name) {
    RestTemplate restTemplate = new RestTemplate(true);

    //add file
    LinkedMultiValueMap<String, Object> params = new LinkedMultiValueMap<>();
    params.add("file", new FileSystemResource(file));

    //add array
    UriComponentsBuilder builder = UriComponentsBuilder.fromHttpUrl("https://my_url");
    for (String item : array) {
        builder.queryParam("array", item);
    }

    //add some String
    builder.queryParam("name", name);

    //another staff
    String result = "";
    HttpHeaders headers = new HttpHeaders();
    headers.setContentType(MediaType.MULTIPART_FORM_DATA);

    HttpEntity<LinkedMultiValueMap<String, Object>> requestEntity =
            new HttpEntity<>(params, headers);

    ResponseEntity<String> responseEntity = restTemplate.exchange(
            builder.build().encode().toUri(),
            HttpMethod.POST,
            requestEntity,
            String.class);

    HttpStatus statusCode = responseEntity.getStatusCode();
    if (statusCode == HttpStatus.ACCEPTED) {
        result = responseEntity.getBody();
    }
    return result;
}

The POST request will have File in its Body and next structure:

POST https://my_url?array=your_value1&array=your_value2&name=bob

Save PHP array to MySQL?

The best way, that I found to myself is save array as data string with separator characters

$array = array("value1", "value2", "value3", "...", "valuen");
$array_data = implode("array_separator", $array);

$query = "INSERT INTO my_tbl_name (id, array_data) VALUES(NULL,'" . $array_data . "');";

You can then search data, stored in your array with simple query

$query = "SELECT * FROM my_tbl_name WHERE array_data LIKE '%value3%'";

use explode() function to convert "array_data" string to array

$array = explode("array_separator", $array_data);

note that this is not working with multidimensional arrays and make sure that your "array_separator" is unique and had not exist in array values.

Be careful !!! if you just will take a form data and put in database, you will be in trap, becous the form data isn't SQL-safe ! you must handle your form value with mysql_real_escape_string or if you use MySQLi mysqli::real_escape_string or if value are integer or boolean cast (int) (boolean) on them

$number = (int)$_POST['number'];

Throughput and bandwidth difference?

As an analogy consider a water pipe as a channel. Pipe diameter corresponds to bandwidth or capacity, and pipe contents corresponds to throughput or usage. In the following image we can see three pipes (or channels), all of which are under-utilised, hence, usage could be increased without the need for a bigger pipe.

Bandwidth vs. throughput

How do I call the base class constructor?

Regarding the alternative to super; you'd in most cases use use the base class either in the initialization list of the derived class, or using the Base::someData syntax when you are doing work elsewhere and the derived class redefines data members.

struct Base
{
    Base(char* name) { }
    virtual ~Base();
    int d;
};

struct Derived : Base
{
    Derived() : Base("someString") { }
    int d;
    void foo() { d = Base::d; }
};

In AngularJS, what's the difference between ng-pristine and ng-dirty?

As already stated in earlier answers, ng-pristine is for indicating that the field has not been modified, whereas ng-dirty is for telling it has been modified. Why need both?

Let's say we've got a form with phone and e-mail address among the fields. Either phone or e-mail is required, and you also have to notify the user when they've got invalid data in each field. This can be accomplished by using ng-dirty and ng-pristine together:

<form name="myForm">
    <input name="email" ng-model="data.email" ng-required="!data.phone">
    <div class="error"
         ng-show="myForm.email.$invalid &&
                  myForm.email.$pristine &&
                  myForm.phone.$pristine">Phone or e-mail required</div>
    <div class="error"
         ng-show="myForm.email.$invalid && myForm.email.$dirty">
        E-mail is invalid
    </div>

    <input name="phone" ng-model="data.phone" ng-required="!data.email">
    <div class="error"
         ng-show="myForm.phone.$invalid &&
                  myForm.email.$pristine &&
                  myForm.phone.$pristine">Phone or e-mail required</div>
    <div class="error"
         ng-show="myForm.phone.$invalid && myForm.phone.$dirty">
        Phone is invalid
    </div>
</form>

Ternary operator (?:) in Bash

If the condition is merely checking if a variable is set, there's even a shorter form:

a=${VAR:-20}

will assign to a the value of VAR if VAR is set, otherwise it will assign it the default value 20 -- this can also be a result of an expression.

This approach is technically called "Parameter Expansion".

what is the most efficient way of counting occurrences in pandas?

I think df['word'].value_counts() should serve. By skipping the groupby machinery, you'll save some time. I'm not sure why count should be much slower than max. Both take some time to avoid missing values. (Compare with size.)

In any case, value_counts has been specifically optimized to handle object type, like your words, so I doubt you'll do much better than that.

Javascript + Regex = Nothing to repeat error?

Well, in my case I had to test a Phone Number with the help of regex, and I was getting the same error,

Invalid regular expression: /+923[0-9]{2}-(?!1234567)(?!1111111)(?!7654321)[0-9]{7}/: Nothing to repeat'

So, what was the error in my case was that + operator after the / in the start of the regex. So enclosing the + operator with square brackets [+], and again sending the request, worked like a charm.

Following will work:

/[+]923[0-9]{2}-(?!1234567)(?!1111111)(?!7654321)[0-9]{7}/

This answer may be helpful for those, who got the same type of error, but their chances of getting the error from this point of view, as mine! Cheers :)

How to terminate a process in vbscript

The Win32_Process class provides access to both 32-bit and 64-bit processes when the script is run from a 64-bit command shell.

If this is not an option for you, you can try using the taskkill command:

Dim oShell : Set oShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

' Launch notepad '
oShell.Run "notepad"
WScript.Sleep 3000

' Kill notepad '
oShell.Run "taskkill /im notepad.exe", , True

Select by partial string from a pandas DataFrame

Based on github issue #620, it looks like you'll soon be able to do the following:

df[df['A'].str.contains("hello")]

Update: vectorized string methods (i.e., Series.str) are available in pandas 0.8.1 and up.

C# find highest array value and index

int[] anArray = { 1, 5, 2, 7 };
// Finding max
int m = anArray.Max();

// Positioning max
int p = Array.IndexOf(anArray, m);

How do I mock a REST template exchange?

I implemented a small library that is quite useful. It provides a ClientHttpRequestFactory that can receive some context. By doing so, it allows to go through all client layers such as checking that query parameters are valued, headers set, and check that deserialization works well.

How to get all properties values of a JavaScript Object (without knowing the keys)?

how do you view macro code in access?

In Access 2010, go to the Create tab on the ribbon. Click Macro. An "Action Catalog" panel should appear on the right side of the screen. Underneath, there's a section titled "In This Database." Clicking on one of the macro names should display its code.

How to make a char string from a C macro's value?

He who is Shy* gave you the germ of an answer, but only the germ. The basic technique for converting a value into a string in the C pre-processor is indeed via the '#' operator, but a simple transliteration of the proposed solution gets a compilation error:

#define TEST_FUNC test_func
#define TEST_FUNC_NAME #TEST_FUNC

#include <stdio.h>
int main(void)
{
    puts(TEST_FUNC_NAME);
    return(0);
}

The syntax error is on the 'puts()' line - the problem is a 'stray #' in the source.

In section 6.10.3.2 of the C standard, 'The # operator', it says:

Each # preprocessing token in the replacement list for a function-like macro shall be followed by a parameter as the next preprocessing token in the replacement list.

The trouble is that you can convert macro arguments to strings -- but you can't convert random items that are not macro arguments.

So, to achieve the effect you are after, you most certainly have to do some extra work.

#define FUNCTION_NAME(name) #name
#define TEST_FUNC_NAME  FUNCTION_NAME(test_func)

#include <stdio.h>

int main(void)
{
    puts(TEST_FUNC_NAME);
    return(0);
}

I'm not completely clear on how you plan to use the macros, and how you plan to avoid repetition altogether. This slightly more elaborate example might be more informative. The use of a macro equivalent to STR_VALUE is an idiom that is necessary to get the desired result.

#define STR_VALUE(arg)      #arg
#define FUNCTION_NAME(name) STR_VALUE(name)

#define TEST_FUNC      test_func
#define TEST_FUNC_NAME FUNCTION_NAME(TEST_FUNC)

#include <stdio.h>

static void TEST_FUNC(void)
{
    printf("In function %s\n", TEST_FUNC_NAME);
}

int main(void)
{
    puts(TEST_FUNC_NAME);
    TEST_FUNC();
    return(0);
}

How to animate CSS Translate

According to CanIUse you should have it with multiple prefixes.

$('div').css({
    "-webkit-transform":"translate(100px,100px)",
    "-ms-transform":"translate(100px,100px)",
    "transform":"translate(100px,100px)"

How do I print bold text in Python?

Check out colorama. It doesn't necessarily help with bolding... but you can do colorized output on both Windows and Linux, and control the brightness:

from colorama import *
init(autoreset=True)
print Fore.RED + 'some red text'
print Style.BRIGHT + Fore.RED + 'some bright red text'

How can I make a DateTimePicker display an empty string?

Obfuscating the value by using the CustomFormat property, using checkbox cbEnableEndDate as the flag to indicate whether other code should ignore the value:

If dateTaskEnd > Date.FromOADate(0) Then
    dtTaskEnd.Format = DateTimePickerFormat.Custom
    dtTaskEnd.CustomFormat = "yyyy-MM-dd"
    dtTaskEnd.Value = dateTaskEnd
    dtTaskEnd.Enabled = True
    cbEnableEndDate.Checked = True
Else
    dtTaskEnd.Format = DateTimePickerFormat.Custom
    dtTaskEnd.CustomFormat = " "
    dtTaskEnd.Value = Date.FromOADate(0)
    dtTaskEnd.Enabled = False
    cbEnableEndDate.Checked = False
End If

How does one generate a random number in Apple's Swift language?

The following code will produce a secure random number between 0 and 255:

extension UInt8 {
  public static var random: UInt8 {
    var number: UInt8 = 0
    _ = SecRandomCopyBytes(kSecRandomDefault, 1, &number)
    return number
  }
}

You call it like this:

print(UInt8.random)

For bigger numbers it becomes more complicated.
This is the best I could come up with:

extension UInt16 {
  public static var random: UInt16 {
    let count = Int(UInt8.random % 2) + 1
    var numbers = [UInt8](repeating: 0, count: 2)
    _ = SecRandomCopyBytes(kSecRandomDefault, count, &numbers)
    return numbers.reversed().reduce(0) { $0 << 8 + UInt16($1) }
  }
}

extension UInt32 {
  public static var random: UInt32 {
    let count = Int(UInt8.random % 4) + 1
    var numbers = [UInt8](repeating: 0, count: 4)
    _ = SecRandomCopyBytes(kSecRandomDefault, count, &numbers)
    return numbers.reversed().reduce(0) { $0 << 8 + UInt32($1) }
  }
}

These methods use an extra random number to determine how many UInt8s are going to be used to create the random number. The last line converts the [UInt8] to UInt16 or UInt32.

I don't know if the last two still count as truly random, but you can tweak it to your likings :)

running multiple bash commands with subprocess

You have to use shell=True in subprocess and no shlex.split:

def subprocess_cmd(command):
    process = subprocess.Popen(command,stdout=subprocess.PIPE, shell=True)
    proc_stdout = process.communicate()[0].strip()
    print proc_stdout

subprocess_cmd('echo a; echo b')

returns:

a
b

Method with a bool return

private bool CheckAll()
{
    if ( ....)
    {
        return true;
    }

    return false;
}

When the if-condition is false the method doesn't know what value should be returned (you probably get an error like "not all paths return a value").

As CQQL pointed out if you mean to return true when your if-condition is true you could have simply written:

private bool CheckAll()
{
    return (your_condition);
}

If you have side effects, and you want to handle them before you return, the first (long) version would be required.

How to prevent XSS with HTML/PHP?

You are also able to set some XSS related HTTP response headers via header(...)

X-XSS-Protection "1; mode=block"

to be sure, the browser XSS protection mode is enabled.

Content-Security-Policy "default-src 'self'; ..."

to enable browser-side content security. See this one for Content Security Policy (CSP) details: http://content-security-policy.com/ Especially setting up CSP to block inline-scripts and external script sources is helpful against XSS.

for a general bunch of useful HTTP response headers concerning the security of you webapp, look at OWASP: https://www.owasp.org/index.php/List_of_useful_HTTP_headers
