Inserting Data into Hive Table

Use this -

create table dummy_table_name as select * from source_table_name;

This will create the new table with existing data available on source_table_name.

'mvn' is not recognized as an internal or external command,

Add maven directory /bin to System variables under the name Path.

To check this, you can echo %PATH%

javaw.exe cannot find path

Make sure to download these from here:

enter image description here

Also create PATH enviroment variable on you computer like this (if it doesn't exist already):

  1. Right click on My Computer/Computer
  2. Properties
  3. Advanced system settings (or just Advanced)
  4. Enviroment variables
  5. If PATH variable doesn't exist among "User variables" click New (Variable name: PATH, Variable value : C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0\bin; <-- please check out the right version, this may differ as Oracle keeps updating Java). ; in the end enables assignment of multiple values to PATH variable.
  6. Click OK! Done

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Safely casting long to int in Java

With Google Guava's Ints class, your method can be changed to:

public static int safeLongToInt(long l) {
    return Ints.checkedCast(l);
}

From the linked docs:

checkedCast

public static int checkedCast(long value)

Returns the int value that is equal to value, if possible.

Parameters: value - any value in the range of the int type

Returns: the int value that equals value

Throws: IllegalArgumentException - if value is greater than Integer.MAX_VALUE or less than Integer.MIN_VALUE

Incidentally, you don't need the safeLongToInt wrapper, unless you want to leave it in place for changing out the functionality without extensive refactoring of course.

How should I edit an Entity Framework connection string?

how to load url into div tag

Not using iframes puts you in a world of handling #document security issues with cross domain and links firing unexpected ways that was not intended for originally, do you really need bad Advertisements?

You can use jquery .load function to send the page to whatever html element you want to target, assuming your not getting this from another domain.

You can use javascript .innerHTML value to set and to rewrite the element with whatever you want, but if you add another file you might be writing against 2 documents in 1... like a in another

iframes are old, another way we can add "src" into the html alone without any use for javascript. But it's old, prehistoric, and just plain OLD! Frameset makes it worse because I can put #document in those to handle multiple html files. An Old way people created navigation menu's Long and before people had FLIP phones.

1.) Yes you will have to work in Javascript if you do NOT want to use an Iframe.

2.) There is a good hack in which you can set the domain to equal each other without having to set server stuff around. Means you will have to have edit capabilities of the documents.

3.) javascript window.document is limited to the iframe itself and can NOT go above the iframe if you want to grab something through the DOM itself. Because it treats it like a separate tab, it also defines it in another document object model.

Python list iterator behavior and next(iterator)

I find the existing answers a little confusing, because they only indirectly indicate the essential mystifying thing in the code example: both* the "print i" and the "next(a)" are causing their results to be printed.

Since they're printing alternating elements of the original sequence, and it's unexpected that the "next(a)" statement is printing, it appears as if the "print i" statement is printing all the values.

In that light, it becomes more clear that assigning the result of "next(a)" to a variable inhibits the printing of its' result, so that just the alternate values that the "i" loop variable are printed. Similarly, making the "print" statement emit something more distinctive disambiguates it, as well.

(One of the existing answers refutes the others because that answer is having the example code evaluated as a block, so that the interpreter is not reporting the intermediate values for "next(a)".)

The beguiling thing in answering questions, in general, is being explicit about what is obvious once you know the answer. It can be elusive. Likewise critiquing answers once you understand them. It's interesting...

The difference between the 'Local System' account and the 'Network Service' account?

Since there is so much confusion about functionality of standard service accounts, I'll try to give a quick run down.

First the actual accounts:

  • LocalService account (preferred)

    A limited service account that is very similar to Network Service and meant to run standard least-privileged services. However, unlike Network Service it accesses the network as an Anonymous user.

    • Name: NT AUTHORITY\LocalService
    • the account has no password (any password information you provide is ignored)
    • HKCU represents the LocalService user account
    • has minimal privileges on the local computer
    • presents anonymous credentials on the network
    • SID: S-1-5-19
    • has its own profile under the HKEY_USERS registry key (HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19)

  • NetworkService account

    Limited service account that is meant to run standard privileged services. This account is far more limited than Local System (or even Administrator) but still has the right to access the network as the machine (see caveat above).

    • NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService
    • the account has no password (any password information you provide is ignored)
    • HKCU represents the NetworkService user account
    • has minimal privileges on the local computer
    • presents the computer's credentials (e.g. MANGO$) to remote servers
    • SID: S-1-5-20
    • has its own profile under the HKEY_USERS registry key (HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20)
    • If trying to schedule a task using it, enter NETWORK SERVICE into the Select User or Group dialog

  • LocalSystem account (dangerous, don't use!)

    Completely trusted account, more so than the administrator account. There is nothing on a single box that this account cannot do, and it has the right to access the network as the machine (this requires Active Directory and granting the machine account permissions to something)

    • Name: .\LocalSystem (can also use LocalSystem or ComputerName\LocalSystem)
    • the account has no password (any password information you provide is ignored)
    • SID: S-1-5-18
    • does not have any profile of its own (HKCU represents the default user)
    • has extensive privileges on the local computer
    • presents the computer's credentials (e.g. MANGO$) to remote servers

Above when talking about accessing the network, this refers solely to SPNEGO (Negotiate), NTLM and Kerberos and not to any other authentication mechanism. For example, processing running as LocalService can still access the internet.

The general issue with running as a standard out of the box account is that if you modify any of the default permissions you're expanding the set of things everything running as that account can do. So if you grant DBO to a database, not only can your service running as Local Service or Network Service access that database but everything else running as those accounts can too. If every developer does this the computer will have a service account that has permissions to do practically anything (more specifically the superset of all of the different additional privileges granted to that account).

It is always preferable from a security perspective to run as your own service account that has precisely the permissions you need to do what your service does and nothing else. However, the cost of this approach is setting up your service account, and managing the password. It's a balancing act that each application needs to manage.

In your specific case, the issue that you are probably seeing is that the the DCOM or COM+ activation is limited to a given set of accounts. In Windows XP SP2, Windows Server 2003, and above the Activation permission was restricted significantly. You should use the Component Services MMC snapin to examine your specific COM object and see the activation permissions. If you're not accessing anything on the network as the machine account you should seriously consider using Local Service (not Local System which is basically the operating system).

In Windows Server 2003 you cannot run a scheduled task as

  • NT_AUTHORITY\LocalService (aka the Local Service account), or
  • NT AUTHORITY\NetworkService (aka the Network Service account).

That capability only was added with Task Scheduler 2.0, which only exists in Windows Vista/Windows Server 2008 and newer.

A service running as NetworkService presents the machine credentials on the network. This means that if your computer was called mango, it would present as the machine account MANGO$:

What is the function of the push / pop instructions used on registers in x86 assembly?

Where is it pushed on?

esp - 4. More precisely:

  • esp gets subtracted by 4
  • the value is pushed to esp

pop reverses this.

The System V ABI tells Linux to make rsp point to a sensible stack location when the program starts running: What is default register state when program launches (asm, linux)? which is what you should usually use.

How can you push a register?

Minimal GNU GAS example:

.data
    /* .long takes 4 bytes each. */
    val1:
        /* Store bytes 0x 01 00 00 00 here. */
        .long 1
    val2:
        /* 0x 02 00 00 00 */
        .long 2
.text
    /* Make esp point to the address of val2.
     * Unusual, but totally possible. */
    mov $val2, %esp

    /* eax = 3 */
    mov $3, %ea

    push %eax
    /*
    Outcome:
    - esp == val1
    - val1 == 3
    esp was changed to point to val1,
    and then val1 was modified.
    */

    pop %ebx
    /*
    Outcome:
    - esp == &val2
    - ebx == 3
    Inverses push: ebx gets the value of val1 (first)
    and then esp is increased back to point to val2.
    */

The above on GitHub with runnable assertions.

Why is this needed?

It is true that those instructions could be easily implemented via mov, add and sub.

They reason they exist, is that those combinations of instructions are so frequent, that Intel decided to provide them for us.

The reason why those combinations are so frequent, is that they make it easy to save and restore the values of registers to memory temporarily so they don't get overwritten.

To understand the problem, try compiling some C code by hand.

A major difficulty, is to decide where each variable will be stored.

Ideally, all variables would fit into registers, which is the fastest memory to access (currently about 100x faster than RAM).

But of course, we can easily have more variables than registers, specially for the arguments of nested functions, so the only solution is to write to memory.

We could write to any memory address, but since the local variables and arguments of function calls and returns fit into a nice stack pattern, which prevents memory fragmentation, that is the best way to deal with it. Compare that with the insanity of writing a heap allocator.

Then we let compilers optimize the register allocation for us, since that is NP complete, and one of the hardest parts of writing a compiler. This problem is called register allocation, and it is isomorphic to graph coloring.

When the compiler's allocator is forced to store things in memory instead of just registers, that is known as a spill.

Does this boil down to a single processor instruction or is it more complex?

All we know for sure is that Intel documents a push and a pop instruction, so they are one instruction in that sense.

Internally, it could be expanded to multiple microcodes, one to modify esp and one to do the memory IO, and take multiple cycles.

But it is also possible that a single push is faster than an equivalent combination of other instructions, since it is more specific.

This is mostly un(der)documented:

Add one year in current date PYTHON

You can use Python-dateutil's relativedelta to increment a datetime object while remaining sensitive to things like leap years and month lengths. Python-dateutil comes packaged with matplotlib if you already have that. You can do the following:

from dateutil.relativedelta import relativedelta

new_date = old_date + relativedelta(years=1)

(This answer was given by @Max to a similar question).

But if your date is a string (i.e. not already a datetime object) you can convert it using datetime:

from datetime import datetime
from dateutil.relativedelta import relativedelta

your_date_string = "April 1, 2012"
format_string = "%B %d, %Y"

datetime_object = datetime.strptime(your_date_string, format_string).date()
new_date = datetime_object + relativedelta(years=1)
new_date_string = datetime.strftime(new_date, format_string).replace(' 0', ' ')

new_date_string will contain "April 1, 2013".

NB: Unfortunately, datetime only outputs day values as "decimal numbers" - i.e. with leading zeros if they're single digit numbers. The .replace() at the end is a workaround to deal with this issue copied from @Alex Martelli (see this question for his and other approaches to this problem).

            {},
            function(responseText, textStatus, XMLHttpRequest) {
                dialog.dialog();
            }
        );
    //prevent the browser to follow the link
    return false;

Do you have to put Task.Run in a method to make it async?

When you use Task.Run to run a method, Task gets a thread from threadpool to run that method. So from the UI thread's perspective, it is "asynchronous" as it doesn't block UI thread.This is fine for desktop application as you usually don't need many threads to take care of user interactions.

However, for web application each request is serviced by a thread-pool thread and thus the number of active requests can be increased by saving such threads. Frequently using threadpool threads to simulate async operation is not scalable for web applications.

True Async doesn't necessarily involving using a thread for I/O operations, such as file / DB access etc. You can read this to understand why I/O operation doesn't need threads. http://blog.stephencleary.com/2013/11/there-is-no-thread.html

In your simple example,it is a pure CPU-bound calculation, so using Task.Run is fine.

How to delete directory content in Java?

All files must be delete from the directory before it is deleted.

There are third party libraries that have a lot of common utilities, including ones that does that for you:

Can I add a UNIQUE constraint to a PostgreSQL table, after it's already created?

Yes, you can add a UNIQUE constraint after the fact. However, if you have non-unique entries in your table Postgres will complain about it until you correct them.

Joining three tables using MySQL

Just adding a point to previous answers that in MySQL we can either use

table_factor syntax

OR

joined_table syntax

mysql documentation

Table_factor example

SELECT prd.name, b.name
FROM products prd, buyers b

Joined Table example

SELECT prd.name, b.name
FROM products prd
 left join buyers b on b.bid = prd.bid;

FYI: Please ignore the fact the the left join on the joined table example doesnot make much sense (in reality we would use some sort of join table to link buyer to the product table instead of saving buyerID in product table).

Bootstrap 3 navbar active li not changing background-color

In Bootstrap 3.3.x make sure you use the scrollspy JavaScript capability to track active elements. It's easy to include it in your HTML. Just do the following:

<body data-spy="scroll" data-target="Id or class of the element you want to track">

In most cases I usually track active elements on my navbar, so I do the following:

<body data-spy="scroll" data-target=".navbar-fixed-top" >

Now in your CSS you can target .navbar-fixed-top .active a:

.navbar-fixed-top .active a {
    // Put in some styling
}

This should work if you are tracking active li elements in your top fixed navigation bar.

"Insufficient Storage Available" even there is lot of free space in device memory

The package manager (“installer”) has a design problem: it can’t distinguish between a bunch of possible errors and regularly comes up with the “insufficient storage” excuse.

The first steps are done: identify it’s an install problem (1.) and not related to storage shortage (2.)

  1. It happens on the console (pm install file.apk), with Google Play, other markets and manual GUI-install (for example, “clicking” on a downloaded APK file); it is not a download issue, ...
  2. Packages end up entirely on the /data partition -or- mostly on the SD card (and a little on /data). – Both places show enough space as indicated by the original poster (33 MB and >900 MB respectively) for the <20 MB package. –And– the /data partition has more than 10% free (33 MB is more than 10% of 200 MB).

Surprisingly most answers don’t take this into account...

In reality, the /data partition needs a cleanup from residues from previous installs.

  • Identify the common name of the problematic package (for example, com.abc.def)
  • Uninstall the package (for example, pm uninstall com.abc.def)
  • Check what’s left of it in data (for example, find /data -name 'com.abc.def*')
  • Delete that stuff

The installer chokes on those, returning with the wrong reason. – The interesting part is: if the package gets installed on the SD card (forced or by other means) some (all?) leftovers on /data don’t hurt... which leads to the false belief that it is indeed a space problem (more space on the SD card...)!

The Stack Overflow question where I got half of this from is Solution to INSTALL_FAILED_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE error on Android.

BigDecimal equals() versus compareTo()

I see that BigDecimal has an inflate() method on equals() method. What does inflate() do actually?

Basically, inflate() calls BigInteger.valueOf(intCompact) if necessary, i.e. it creates the unscaled value that is stored as a BigInteger from long intCompact. If you don't need that BigInteger and the unscaled value fits into a long BigDecimal seems to try to save space as long as possible.

VBA - Select columns using numbers?

In the example code below I use variables just to show how the command could be used for other situations.

FirstCol = 1
LastCol = FirstCol + 5
Range(Columns(FirstCol), Columns(LastCol)).Select

How to upgrade Angular CLI to the latest version

In my case, I have installed angular-cli locally using npm install --save-dev angular-cli. So, when I use command npm install -g @angular/cli, it generates error saying that "Your global Angular CLI version (1.7.3) is greater than your local version (1.4.9)". Please note that angular-cli, @angular/cli and @angular/cli@latest are two different cli's. What solves this is uninstall all cli and then install latest angular cli using npm install -g @angular/cli@latest

Install Node.js on Ubuntu

wget -qO- https://raw.githubusercontent.com/creationix/nvm/v0.19.0/install.sh | bash

nvm install v0.10.33

Just use nvm for Node.js version control - nvm.

Image resizing client-side with JavaScript before upload to the server

Perhaps with the canvas tag (though it's not portable). There's a blog about how to rotate an image with canvas here, I suppose if you can rotate it, you can resize it. Maybe it can be a starting point.

how to get html content from a webview?

try using HttpClient as Sephy said:

public String getHtml(String url) {
    HttpClient vClient = new DefaultHttpClient();
    HttpGet vGet = new HttpGet(url);
    String response = "";

    try {
        ResponseHandler<String> vHandler = new BasicResponseHandler();
        response = vClient.execute(vGet, vHandler);
    } catch (Exception e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }
    return response;
}

Disable native datepicker in Google Chrome

You could use:

jQuery('input[type="date"]').live('click', function(e) {e.preventDefault();}).datepicker();

ImportError: No module named pandas

You're missing a few (not terribly clear) steps. Pandas is distributed through pip as a wheel, which means you need to do:

pip install wheel
pip install pandas

You're probably going to run into other issues after this - it looks like you're installing on Windows which isn't the most friendly of targets for numpy/scipy/pandas. Alternatively, you could pickup a binary installer from here.

You also had an error installing numpy. Like before, I recommend grabbing a binary installer for this, as it's not a simple process. However, you can resolve your current error by installing this package from Microsoft.

While it's completely possible to get a perfect environment setup on Windows, I have found the quality-of-life for a Python dev is vastly improved by setting up a debian VM. Especially with the scientific packages, you will run into many cases like this.

Android simple alert dialog

You can easily make your own 'AlertView' and use it everywhere.

alertView("You really want this?");

Implement it once:

private void alertView( String message ) {
 AlertDialog.Builder dialog = new AlertDialog.Builder(context);
 dialog.setTitle( "Hello" )
       .setIcon(R.drawable.ic_launcher)
       .setMessage(message)
//     .setNegativeButton("Cancel", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
//      public void onClick(DialogInterface dialoginterface, int i) {
//          dialoginterface.cancel();
//          }})
      .setPositiveButton("Ok", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() {
        public void onClick(DialogInterface dialoginterface, int i) {
        }
        }).show();
 }

How to auto adjust table td width from the content

you could also use display: table insted of tables. Divs are way more flexible than tables.

How do I create HTML table using jQuery dynamically?

FOR EXAMPLE YOU HAVE RECIEVED JASON DATA FROM SERVER.

                var obj = JSON.parse(msg);
                var tableString ="<table id='tbla'>";
                tableString +="<th><td>Name<td>City<td>Birthday</th>";

                for (var i=0; i<obj.length; i++){
                    //alert(obj[i].name);
                    tableString +=gg_stringformat("<tr><td>{0}<td>{1}<td>{2}</tr>",obj[i].name, obj[i].age, obj[i].birthday);
                }
                tableString +="</table>";
                alert(tableString);
                $('#divb').html(tableString);

HERE IS THE CODE FOR gg_stringformat

function gg_stringformat() {
var argcount = arguments.length,
    string,
    i;

if (!argcount) {
    return "";
}
if (argcount === 1) {
    return arguments[0];
}
string = arguments[0];
for (i = 1; i < argcount; i++) {
    string = string.replace(new RegExp('\\{' + (i - 1) + '}', 'gi'), arguments[i]);
}
return string;

caching JavaScript files

I have a simple system that is pure JavaScript. It checks for changes in a simple text file that is never cached. When you upload a new version this file is changed. Just put the following JS at the top of the page.

just replace the "version.txt" with your file that is always run and "version" with the name you want to use for your local storage.

xls to csv converter

xlsx2csv is faster than pandas and xlrd.

xlsx2csv -s 0 crunchbase_monthly_.xlsx cruchbase

excel file usually comes with n sheetname.

-s is sheetname index.

then, cruchbase folder will be created, each sheet belongs to xlsx will be converted to a single csv.

p.s. csvkit is awesome too.

Change the project theme in Android Studio?

Note : This answer is now out-of-date. This changes the theme in "preview" only as @imjohnking and @john-ktejik pointed out. As @Shahzeb mentioned, theme can modified in res>values>styles

Android Studio 0.8.2 provides a slightly easier way to change the theme. In the preview window, you can select the theme of "Holo.Light.DarkActionBar" by clicking on the theme combo box just above the phone.enter image description here

Or do a ctrl + click on the @style/AppTheme in the Android manifest file. It will open styles.xml file where you can change the parent attribute of the style tag.

  • Theme.Holo for a "dark" theme.
  • Theme.Holo.Light for a "light" theme.

When using the Support Library, you must instead use the Theme.AppCompat themes:

  • Theme.AppCompat for the "dark" theme.
  • Theme.AppCompat.Light for the "light" theme.
  • Theme.AppCompat.Light.DarkActionBar for the light theme with a dark action bar.

How do I set a ViewModel on a window in XAML using DataContext property?

You need to instantiate the MainViewModel and set it as datacontext. In your statement it just consider it as string value.

     <Window x:Class="BuildAssistantUI.BuildAssistantWindow"
        xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
        xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
        xmlns:local="clr-namespace:BuildAssistantUI.ViewModels">
      <Window.DataContext>
        <local:MainViewModel/>
      </Window.DataContext>

Android textview outline text

I have created a library based on Nouman Hanif's answer with some additions. For example, fixing a bug that caused an indirect infinite loop on View.invalidate() calls.

OTOH, the library also supports outlined text in EditText widgets, as it was my real goal and it needed a bit more work than TextView.

Here is the link to my library: https://github.com/biomorgoth/android-outline-textview

Thanks to Nouman Hanif for the initial idea on the solution!

See what's in a stash without applying it

From the man git-stash page:

The modifications stashed away by this command can be listed with git stash list, inspected with git stash show

show [<stash>]
       Show the changes recorded in the stash as a diff between the stashed state and
       its original parent. When no <stash> is given, shows the latest one. By default,
       the command shows the diffstat, but it will accept any format known to git diff
       (e.g., git stash show -p stash@{1} to view the second most recent stash in patch
       form).

To list the stashed modifications

git stash list

To show files changed in the last stash

git stash show

So, to view the content of the most recent stash, run

git stash show -p

To view the content of an arbitrary stash, run something like

git stash show -p stash@{1}

javascript create array from for loop

You need to push i

var yearStart = 2000;
var yearEnd = 2040;

var arr = [];

for (var i = yearStart; i < yearEnd+1; i++) {
    arr.push(i);
}

Then, your resulting array will be:

arr = [2000, 2001, 2003, ... 2039, 2040]

Hope this helps

When should you use 'friend' in C++?

You could adhere to the strictest and purest OOP principles and ensure that no data members for any class even have accessors so that all objects must be the only ones that can know about their data with the only way to act on them is through indirect messages, i.e., methods.

But even C# has an internal visibility keyword and Java has its default package level accessibility for some things. C++ comes actually closer to the OOP ideal by minimizinbg the compromise of visibility into a class by specifying exactly which other class and only other classes could see into it.

I don't really use C++ but if C# had friends I would that instead of the assembly-global internal modifier, which I actually use a lot. It doesn't really break incapsulation, because the unit of deployment in .NET is an assembly.

But then there's the InternalsVisibleToAttribute(otherAssembly) which acts like a cross-assembly friend mechanism. Microsoft uses this for visual designer assemblies.

How do I rewrite URLs in a proxy response in NGINX

We should first read the documentation on proxy_pass carefully and fully.

The URI passed to upstream server is determined based on whether "proxy_pass" directive is used with URI or not. Trailing slash in proxy_pass directive means that URI is present and equal to /. Absense of trailing slash means hat URI is absent.

Proxy_pass with URI:

location /some_dir/ {
    proxy_pass http://some_server/;
}

With the above, there's the following proxy:

http:// your_server/some_dir/ some_subdir/some_file ->
http:// some_server/          some_subdir/some_file

Basically, /some_dir/ gets replaced by / to change the request path from /some_dir/some_subdir/some_file to /some_subdir/some_file.

Proxy_pass without URI:

location /some_dir/ {
    proxy_pass http://some_server;
}

With the second (no trailing slash): the proxy goes like this:

http:// your_server /some_dir/some_subdir/some_file ->
http:// some_server /some_dir/some_subdir/some_file

Basically, the full original request path gets passed on without changes.

So, in your case, it seems you should just drop the trailing slash to get what you want.

Caveat

Note that automatic rewrite only works if you don't use variables in proxy_pass. If you use variables, you should do rewrite yourself:

location /some_dir/ {
  rewrite    /some_dir/(.*) /$1 break;
  proxy_pass $upstream_server;
}

There are other cases where rewrite wouldn't work, that's why reading documentation is a must.

Edit

Reading your question again, it seems I may have missed that you just want to edit the html output.

For that, you can use the sub_filter directive. Something like ...

location /admin/ {
    proxy_pass http://localhost:8080/;
    sub_filter "http://your_server/" "http://your_server/admin/";
    sub_filter_once off;
}

Basically, the string you want to replace and the replacement string

How can I make my flexbox layout take 100% vertical space?

DEMO

Characters allowed in GET parameter

I did a test using the Chrome address bar and a $QUERY_STRING in bash, and observed the following:

~!@$%^&*()-_=+[{]}\|;:',./? and grave (backtick) are passed through as plaintext.

, ", < and > are converted to %20, %22, %3C and %3E respectively.

# is ignored, since it is used by ye olde anchor.

Personally, I'd say bite the bullet and encode with base64 :)

How to insert a row between two rows in an existing excel with HSSF (Apache POI)

I merged some of the other answers and comments in the following implementation, tested with Apache POI v3.9.

I have only one rownum parameter because I shift down the target row and copy it in the new empty row. Formulas are handled as expected, they are not copied verbatim, with one exception: references to cells that are above the copied line are not updated; the workaround is to replace these explicit references (if any) with references calculated using INDIRECT() as suggested by this post.

protected void copyRow(Sheet worksheet, int rowNum) {
    Row sourceRow = worksheet.getRow(rowNum);

    //Save the text of any formula before they are altered by row shifting
    String[] formulasArray = new String[sourceRow.getLastCellNum()];
    for (int i = 0; i < sourceRow.getLastCellNum(); i++) {
        if (sourceRow.getCell(i) != null && sourceRow.getCell(i).getCellType() == Cell.CELL_TYPE_FORMULA)
            formulasArray[i] = sourceRow.getCell(i).getCellFormula();
    }

    worksheet.shiftRows(rowNum, worksheet.getLastRowNum(), 1);
    Row newRow = sourceRow; //Now sourceRow is the empty line, so let's rename it
    sourceRow = worksheet.getRow(rowNum + 1);  //Now the source row is at rowNum+1

    // Loop through source columns to add to new row
    for (int i = 0; i < sourceRow.getLastCellNum(); i++) {
        // Grab a copy of the old/new cell
        Cell oldCell = sourceRow.getCell(i);
        Cell newCell;

        // If the old cell is null jump to next cell
        if (oldCell == null) {
            continue;
        } else {
            newCell = newRow.createCell(i);
        }

        // Copy style from old cell and apply to new cell
        CellStyle newCellStyle = worksheet.getWorkbook().createCellStyle();
        newCellStyle.cloneStyleFrom(oldCell.getCellStyle());
        newCell.setCellStyle(newCellStyle);

        // If there is a cell comment, copy
        if (oldCell.getCellComment() != null) {
            newCell.setCellComment(oldCell.getCellComment());
        }

        // If there is a cell hyperlink, copy
        if (oldCell.getHyperlink() != null) {
            newCell.setHyperlink(oldCell.getHyperlink());
        }

        // Set the cell data type
        newCell.setCellType(oldCell.getCellType());

        // Set the cell data value

                newCell.setCellErrorValue(oldCell.getErrorCellValue());
                break;
            case Cell.CELL_TYPE_FORMULA:
                newCell.setCellFormula(formulasArray[i]);
                break;
            case Cell.CELL_TYPE_NUMERIC:
                newCell.setCellValue(oldCell.getNumericCellValue());
                break;
            case Cell.CELL_TYPE_STRING:
                newCell.setCellValue(oldCell.getRichStringCellValue());
                break;
            default:
                break;
        }
    }

    // If there are any merged regions in the source row, copy to new row
    for (int i = 0; i < worksheet.getNumMergedRegions(); i++) {
        CellRangeAddress cellRangeAddress = worksheet.getMergedRegion(i);
        if (cellRangeAddress.getFirstRow() == sourceRow.getRowNum()) {
            CellRangeAddress newCellRangeAddress = new CellRangeAddress(newRow.getRowNum(),
                    (newRow.getRowNum() +
                            (cellRangeAddress.getLastRow() - cellRangeAddress.getFirstRow()
                                    )),
                    cellRangeAddress.getFirstColumn(),
                    cellRangeAddress.getLastColumn());
            worksheet.addMergedRegion(newCellRangeAddress);
        }
    }
}

You will be able to change the directory in this file.

How to extract code of .apk file which is not working?

Any .apk file from market or unsigned

  1. If you apk is downloaded from market and hence signed Install Astro File Manager from market. Open Astro > Tools > Application Manager/Backup and select the application to backup on to the SD card . Mount phone as USB drive and access 'backupsapps' folder to find the apk of target app (lets call it app.apk) . Copy it to your local drive same is the case of unsigned .apk.

  2. Download Dex2Jar zip from this link: SourceForge

  3. Unzip the downloaded zip file.

  4. Open command prompt & write the following command on reaching to directory where dex2jar exe is there and also copy the apk in same directory.

    dex2jar targetapp.apk file(./dex2jar app.apk on terminal)

  5. http://jd.benow.ca/ download decompiler from this link.

  6. Open ‘targetapp.apk.dex2jar.jar’ with jd-gui File > Save All Sources to sava the class files in jar to java files.

How to convert jsonString to JSONObject in Java

Using org.json

If you have a String containing JSON format text, then you can get JSON Object by following steps:

String jsonString = "{\"phonetype\":\"N95\",\"cat\":\"WP\"}";
JSONObject jsonObj = null;
    try {
        jsonObj = new JSONObject(jsonString);
    } catch (JSONException e) {
        e.printStackTrace();
    }

Now to access the phonetype

Sysout.out.println(jsonObject.getString("phonetype"));

OpenCV - DLL missing, but it's not?

I followed instructions on http://opencv.willowgarage.com/wiki/VisualC%2B%2B_VS2010 but was still stuck on exactly the same problem, so here's how I resolved it.

  1. Fetched MSVC 2010 express edition.

  2. Fetched Win 32 OpenCV 2.2 binaries and installed in default location.

  3. Created new project.

  4. Project setup

    Project -> OpenCV_Helloworld Properties...Configuration Properties -> VC++ Directories

    Include Directories... add: C:\OpenCV2.2\include\;

    Library Directories... add: C:\OpenCV2.2\lib;C:\OpenCV2.2\bin;

    Source Directories... add:

    C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\calib3d\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\contrib\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\core\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\features2d\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\flann\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\gpu\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\gpu\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\highgui\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\imgproc\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\legacy\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\ml\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\objdetect\src;C:\OpenCV2.2\modules\video\src;

    Linker -> Input -> Additional Dependencies...

    For Debug Builds... add:

    opencv_calib3d220d.lib;opencv_contrib220d.lib;opencv_core220d.lib;opencv_features2d220d.lib;opencv_ffmpeg220d.lib;opencv_flann220d.lib;opencv_gpu220d.lib;opencv_highgui220d.lib;opencv_imgproc220d.lib;opencv_legacy220d.lib;opencv_ml220d.lib;opencv_objdetect220d.lib;opencv_video220d.lib;

At this point I thought I was done, but ran into the problem you described when running the exe in debug mode. The final step is obvious once you see it, select:

Linker -> General ... Set 'Use Library Dependency Inputs' to 'Yes'

Hope this helps.

Python - Extracting and Saving Video Frames

After a lot of research on how to convert frames to video I have created this function hope this helps. We require opencv for this:

import cv2
import numpy as np
import os

def frames_to_video(inputpath,outputpath,fps):
   image_array = []
   files = [f for f in os.listdir(inputpath) if isfile(join(inputpath, f))]
   files.sort(key = lambda x: int(x[5:-4]))
   for i in range(len(files)):
       img = cv2.imread(inputpath + files[i])
       size =  (img.shape[1],img.shape[0])
       img = cv2.resize(img,size)
       image_array.append(img)
   fourcc = cv2.VideoWriter_fourcc('D', 'I', 'V', 'X')
   out = cv2.VideoWriter(outputpath,fourcc, fps, size)
   for i in range(len(image_array)):
       out.write(image_array[i])
   out.release()

inputpath = 'folder path'
outpath =  'video file path/video.mp4'
fps = 29
frames_to_video(inputpath,outpath,fps)

change the value of fps(frames per second),input folder path and output folder path according to your own local locations

How to prevent gcc optimizing some statements in C?

Turning off optimization fixes the problem, but it is unnecessary. A safer alternative is to make it illegal for the compiler to optimize out the store by using the volatile type qualifier.

// Assuming pageptr is unsigned char * already...
unsigned char *pageptr = ...;
((unsigned char volatile *)pageptr)[0] = pageptr[0];

The volatile type qualifier instructs the compiler to be strict about memory stores and loads. One purpose of volatile is to let the compiler know that the memory access has side effects, and therefore must be preserved. In this case, the store has the side effect of causing a page fault, and you want the compiler to preserve the page fault.

This way, the surrounding code can still be optimized, and your code is portable to other compilers which don't understand GCC's #pragma or __attribute__ syntax.

What is the difference between instanceof and Class.isAssignableFrom(...)?

When using instanceof, you need to know the class of B at compile time. When using isAssignableFrom() it can be dynamic and change during runtime.

Add Custom Headers using HttpWebRequest

A simple method of creating the service, adding headers and reading the JSON response,

private static void WebRequest()

How can I replace a regex substring match in Javascript?

I think the simplest way to achieve your goal is this:

var str   = 'asd-0.testing';
var regex = /(asd-)(\d)(\.\w+)/;
var anyNumber = 1;
var res = str.replace(regex, `$1${anyNumber}$3`);

Delete all nodes and relationships in neo4j 1.8

you are probably doing it correct, only the dashboard shows just the higher ID taken, and thus the number of "active" nodes, relationships, although there are none. it is just informative.

to be sure you have an empty graph, run this command:

START n=node(*) return count(n);
START r=rel(*) return count(r);

if both give you 0, your deletion was succesfull.

C# catch a stack overflow exception

Starting with 2.0 a StackOverflow Exception can only be caught in the following circumstances.

  1. The CLR is being run in a hosted environment* where the host specifically allows for StackOverflow exceptions to be handled
  2. The stackoverflow exception is thrown by user code and not due to an actual stack overflow situation (Reference)

*"hosted environment" as in "my code hosts CLR and I configure CLR's options" and not "my code runs on shared hosting"

Best way to store time (hh:mm) in a database

Instead of minutes-past-midnight we store it as 24 hours clock, as an SMALLINT.

09:12 = 912 14:15 = 1415

when converting back to "human readable form" we just insert a colon ":" two characters from the right. Left-pad with zeros if you need to. Saves the mathematics each way, and uses a few fewer bytes (compared to varchar), plus enforces that the value is numeric (rather than alphanumeric)

Pretty goofy though ... there should have been a TIME datatype in MS SQL for many a year already IMHO ...

Is there a way to list all resources in AWS

Try this

For only ec2:

from skew import scan

    arn = scan('arn:aws:ec2:us-west-2:123456789012:instance/i-12345678')
    for resource in arn:
        print(resource.data)

For all resources:

arn = scan('arn:aws:*:*:<<youraccountId>>:instance*')
for resource in arn:
    print(resource.data)

setting the id attribute of an input element dynamically in IE: alternative for setAttribute method

Use jquery attr method. It works in all browsers.

var hiddenInput = document.createElement("input");
$(hiddenInput).attr({
    'id':'uniqueIdentifier',
    'type': 'hidden',
    'value': ID,
    'class': 'ListItem'
});

Or you could use folowing code:

var e = $('<input id = "uniqueIdentifier" type="hidden" value="' + ID + '" class="ListItem" />');

static files with express.js

res.sendFile & express.static both will work for this

var express = require('express');
var app = express();
var path = require('path');
var public = path.join(__dirname, 'public');

// viewed at http://localhost:8080
app.get('/', function(req, res) {
    res.sendFile(path.join(public, 'index.html'));
});

app.use('/', express.static(public));

app.listen(8080);

Where public is the folder in which the client side code is

As suggested by @ATOzTOA and clarified by @Vozzie, path.join takes the paths to join as arguments, the + passes a single argument to path.

pretty-print JSON using JavaScript

I'd like to show my jsonAnalyze method here, it does a pretty print of the JSON structure only, but in some cases can be more usefull that printing the whole JSON.

Say you have a complex JSON like this:

let theJson = {
'username': 'elen',
'email': '[email protected]',
'state': 'married',
'profiles': [
    {'name': 'elenLove', 'job': 'actor' },
    {'name': 'elenDoe', 'job': 'spy'}
],
'hobbies': ['run', 'movies'],
'status': {
    'home': {
        'ownsHome': true,
        'addresses': [
            {'town': 'Mexico', 'address': '123 mexicoStr'},
            {'town': 'Atlanta', 'address': '4B atlanta 45-48'},
        ]
    },
    'car': {
        'ownsCar': true,
        'cars': [
            {'brand': 'Nissan', 'plate': 'TOKY-114', 'prevOwnersIDs': ['4532354531', '3454655344', '5566753422']},
            {'brand': 'Benz', 'plate': 'ELEN-1225', 'prevOwnersIDs': ['4531124531', '97864655344', '887666753422']}
        ]
    }
},
'active': true,
'employed': false,
};

Then the method will return the structure like this:

username
email
state
profiles[]
    profiles[].name
    profiles[].job
hobbies[]
status{}
    status{}.home{}
        status{}.home{}.ownsHome
        status{}.home{}.addresses[]
            status{}.home{}.addresses[].town
            status{}.home{}.addresses[].address
    status{}.car{}
        status{}.car{}.ownsCar
        status{}.car{}.cars[]
            status{}.car{}.cars[].brand
            status{}.car{}.cars[].plate
            status{}.car{}.cars[].prevOwnersIDs[]

So this is the jsonAnalyze() code:

function jsonAnalyze(obj) {
        let arr = [];
        analyzeJson(obj, null, arr);
        return logBeautifiedDotNotation(arr);

    function analyzeJson(obj, parentStr, outArr) {
        let opt;
        if (!outArr) {
            return "no output array given"
        }
        for (let prop in obj) {
            opt = parentStr ? parentStr + '.' + prop : prop;
            if (Array.isArray(obj[prop]) && obj[prop] !== null) {
                    let arr = obj[prop];
                if ((Array.isArray(arr[0]) || typeof arr[0] == "object") && arr[0] != null) {
                    outArr.push(opt + '[]');
                    analyzeJson(arr[0], opt + '[]', outArr);
                } else {
                    outArr.push(opt + '[]');
                }
            } else if (typeof obj[prop] == "object" && obj[prop] !== null) {
                    outArr.push(opt + '{}');
                    analyzeJson(obj[prop], opt + '{}', outArr);
            } else {
                if (obj.hasOwnProperty(prop) && typeof obj[prop] != 'function') {
                    outArr.push(opt);
                }
            }
        }
    }

    function logBeautifiedDotNotation(arr) {
        retStr = '';
        arr.map(function (item) {
            let dotsAmount = item.split(".").length - 1;
            let dotsString = Array(dotsAmount + 1).join('    ');
            retStr += dotsString + item + '\n';

        });
        return retStr;
    }
}

jsonAnalyze(theJson);

Should I declare Jackson's ObjectMapper as a static field?

Although ObjectMapper is thread safe, I would strongly discourage from declaring it as a static variable, especially in multithreaded application. Not even because it is a bad practice, but because you are running a heavy risk of deadlocking. I am telling it from my own experience. I created an application with 4 identical threads that were getting and processing JSON data from web services. My application was frequently stalling on the following command, according to the thread dump:

Map aPage = mapper.readValue(reader, Map.class);

Beside that, performance was not good. When I replaced static variable with the instance based variable, stalling disappeared and performance quadrupled. I.e. 2.4 millions JSON documents were processed in 40min.56sec., instead of 2.5 hours previously.

Event handler not working on dynamic content

You have to add the selector parameter, otherwise the event is directly bound instead of delegated, which only works if the element already exists (so it doesn't work for dynamically loaded content).

See http://api.jquery.com/on/#direct-and-delegated-events

Change your code to

$(document.body).on('click', '.update' ,function(){

The jQuery set receives the event then delegates it to elements matching the selector given as argument. This means that contrary to when using live, the jQuery set elements must exist when you execute the code.

As this answers receives a lot of attention, here are two supplementary advises :

1) When it's possible, try to bind the event listener to the most precise element, to avoid useless event handling.

That is, if you're adding an element of class b to an existing element of id a, then don't use

$(document.body).on('click', '#a .b', function(){

but use

$('#a').on('click', '.b', function(){

2) Be careful, when you add an element with an id, to ensure you're not adding it twice. Not only is it "illegal" in HTML to have two elements with the same id but it breaks a lot of things. For example a selector "#c" would retrieve only one element with this id.

Sourcetree - undo unpushed commits

If You are on another branch, You need first "check to this commit" for commit you want to delete, and only then "reset current branch to this commit" choosing previous wright commit, will work.

How to See the Contents of Windows library (*.lib)

Assuming you're talking about a static library, DUMPBIN /SYMBOLS shows the functions and data objects in the library. If you're talking about an import library (a .lib used to refer to symbols exported from a DLL), then you want DUMPBIN /EXPORTS.

Note that for functions linked with the "C" binary interface, this still won't get you return values, parameters, or calling convention. That information isn't encoded in the .lib at all; you have to know that ahead of time (via prototypes in header files, for example) in order to call them correctly.

For functions linked with the C++ binary interface, the calling convention and arguments are encoded in the exported name of the function (also called "name mangling"). DUMPBIN /SYMBOLS will show you both the "mangled" function name as well as the decoded set of parameters.

For launcher (Application Icon ) Use : https://romannurik.github.io/AndroidAssetStudio/icons-launcher.html

But Here are some tricks and way to get the better resolution for icons and launcher icons.

Step 1 :

First go to the https://materialdesignicons.com and choose your icon . Or if you have your icon in good resolution then skip this step . Click the desired icon and click on "Advanced Export" it will open up a window like this below Try to generate as large icon as possible

Then click the "Icon" to generate icon (.png) . Well the trick is try to generate as large icon as possible for high resolution devices and the tools will handle it all for small devices but if you use small icon , while generating the icon for high end devices you will loose the icon resolution .

Step 2 :

Then go the Tools page and Upload the Iconenter image description here

Click the "Custom" if you want to color your icon . No matter what color of icon you are uploading , by using Custom you can generate any color you want . Then choose a name and click "Download .ZIP" . This will download the .zip file with the icon for most of the common resolution . You can copy and paste the res folder in your application project folder and you will see the icon in the drawable section .

What is LD_LIBRARY_PATH and how to use it?

My error was also related to not finding the required .so file by a service. I used LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable to priorities the path picked up by the linker to search the required lib.

I copied both service and .so file in a folder and fed it to LD_LIBRARY_PATH variable as

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=. ./service

being in the same folder I have given the above command and it worked.

how to concatenate two dictionaries to create a new one in Python?

d4 = dict(d1.items() + d2.items() + d3.items())

alternatively (and supposedly faster):

d4 = dict(d1)
d4.update(d2)
d4.update(d3)

Previous SO question that both of these answers came from is here.

shared global variables in C

In one header file (shared.h):

extern int this_is_global;

In every file that you want to use this global symbol, include header containing the extern declaration:

#include "shared.h"

To avoid multiple linker definitions, just one declaration of your global symbol must be present across your compilation units (e.g: shared.cpp) :

/* shared.cpp */
#include "shared.h"
int this_is_global;

Simple way to repeat a string

Here's a way to do it using only standard String functions and no explicit loops:

// create a string made up of n copies of s
repeated = String.format(String.format("%%%ds", n), " ").replace(" ",s);

jQuery .each() with input elements

To extract number :

var arrNumber = new Array();
$('input[type=number]').each(function(){
    arrNumber.push($(this).val());
})

To extract text:

var arrText= new Array();
$('input[type=text]').each(function(){
    arrText.push($(this).val());
})

Edit : .map implementation

var arrText= $('input[type=text]').map(function(){
    return this.value;
}).get();

How to print register values in GDB?

Gdb commands:

  • i r <register_name>: print a single register, e.g i r rax, i r eax
  • i r <register_name_1> <register_name_2> ...: print multiple registers, e.g i r rdi rsi,
  • i r: print all register except floating point & vector register (xmm, ymm, zmm).
  • i r a: print all register, include floating point & vector register (xmm, ymm, zmm).
  • i r f: print all FPU floating registers (st0-7 and a few other f*)

Other register groups besides a (all) and f (float) can be found with:

maint print reggroups

as documented at: https://sourceware.org/gdb/current/onlinedocs/gdb/Registers.html#Registers

Tips:

  • xmm0 ~ xmm15, are 128 bits, almost every modern machine has it, they are released in 1999.
  • ymm0 ~ ymm15, are 256 bits, new machine usually have it, they are released in 2011.
  • zmm0 ~ zmm31, are 512 bits, normal pc probably don't have it (as the year 2016), they are released in 2013, and mainly used in servers so far.
  • Only one serial of xmm / ymm / zmm will be shown, because they are the same registers in different mode. On my machine ymm is shown.

What is the difference between a pandas Series and a single-column DataFrame?

Series is a one-dimensional object that can hold any data type such as integers, floats and strings e.g

   import pandas as pd
   x = pd.Series([A,B,C])

0 A
1 B
2 C

The first column of Series is known as index i.e 0,1,2 the second column is your actual data i.e A,B,C

DataFrames is two-dimensional object that can hold series, list, dictionary

df=pd.DataFrame(rd(5,4),['A','B','C','D','E'],['W','X','Y','Z'])

How can I control the speed that bootstrap carousel slides in items?

What worked for me was to change interval in bootstrap.js

  Carousel.DEFAULTS = {
    interval: 2000,      // <----- change this
    pause: 'hover',
    wrap: true,
    keyboard: true

Android studio- "SDK tools directory is missing"

If your SDK tools directory is missing, maybe you deleted it by accident and there is a easy way to download it and guide android studio to it.

First go to android developer site (https://developer.android.com/studio/index.html), scroll to the bottom of the page and chose your download according to system you have(but don't download installer version for windows) you need a zip file which contains SDK.

After you download just put it in my documents (MAC or WINDOWS) and then when you open android studio screen will popup for installing SDK (like the time that you got error), don't click next, go to browse, find that file and press ok. After that go next and it will work like a charm.

That's it.

C++ variable has initializer but incomplete type?

You use a forward declaration when you need a complete type.

You must have a full definition of the class in order to use it.

The usual way to go about this is:

1) create a file Cat_main.h

2) move

#include <string>

class Cat
{
    public:
        Cat(std::string str);
    // Variables
        std::string name;
    // Functions
        void Meow();
};

to Cat_main.h. Note that inside the header I removed using namespace std; and qualified string with std::string.

3) include this file in both Cat_main.cpp and Cat.cpp:

#include "Cat_main.h"

Adding days to a date in Java

SimpleDateFormat sdf = new SimpleDateFormat("dd/MM/yyyy");
Calendar c = Calendar.getInstance();
c.setTime(new Date()); // Now use today date.
c.add(Calendar.DATE, 5); // Adding 5 days
String output = sdf.format(c.getTime());
System.out.println(output);

What was the strangest coding standard rule that you were forced to follow?

I absolutely hate it when someone doesn't use a naming convention. At where I worked, the lead developer (who I replaced) couldn't figure out if he wanted to use camelCase, or way_over_used_underscores. Personally, I hate the underscores and the camel case is easier to read, but it doesn't really matter as long as you keep to one standard.

PHP is especially bad at this, take a look at mysql_numrows which merges the two without the caps.

Java: how can I split an ArrayList in multiple small ArrayLists?

You can also use FunctionalJava library - there is partition method for List. This lib has its own collection types, you can convert them to java collections back and forth.

import fj.data.List;

java.util.List<String> javaList = Arrays.asList("a", "b", "c", "d" );

List<String> fList = Java.<String>Collection_List().f(javaList);

List<List<String> partitions = fList.partition(2);

How can I use goto in Javascript?

How about a for loop? Repeat as many times as you like. Or a while loop, repeat until a condition is met. There are control structures that will let you repeat code. I remember GOTO in Basic... it made such bad code! Modern programming languages give you better options that you can actually maintain.

Print <div id="printarea"></div> only?

I'm very late to this party, but I'd like to pitch in with yet another approach. I wrote a tiny JavaScript module called PrintElements for dynamically printing parts of a webpage.

It works by iterating through selected node elements, and for each node, it traverses up the DOM tree until the BODY element. At each level, including the initial one (which is the to-be-printed node’s level), it attaches a marker class (pe-preserve-print) to the current node. Then attaches another marker class (pe-no-print) to all siblings of the current node, but only if there is no pe-preserve-print class on them. As a third act, it also attaches another class to preserved ancestor elements pe-preserve-ancestor.

A dead-simple supplementary print-only css will hide and show respective elements. Some benefits of this approach is that all styles are preserved, it does not open a new window, there is no need to move around a lot of DOM elements, and generally it is non-invasive with your original document.

See the demo, or read the related article for further details.

What's the advantage of a Java enum versus a class with public static final fields?

The primary advantage is type safety. With a set of constants, any value of the same intrinsic type could be used, introducing errors. With an enum only the applicable values can be used.

For example

public static final int SIZE_SMALL  = 1;
public static final int SIZE_MEDIUM = 2;
public static final int SIZE_LARGE  = 3;

public void setSize(int newSize) { ... }

obj.setSize(15); // Compiles but likely to fail later

vs

public enum Size { SMALL, MEDIUM, LARGE };

public void setSize(Size s) { ... }

obj.setSize( ? ); // Can't even express the above example with an enum

C# Regex for Guid

In .NET Framework 4 there is enhancement System.Guid structure, These includes new TryParse and TryParseExact methods to Parse GUID. Here is example for this.

    //Generate New GUID
    Guid objGuid = Guid.NewGuid();
    //Take invalid guid format
    string strGUID = "aaa-a-a-a-a";

    Guid newGuid;

    if (Guid.TryParse(objGuid.ToString(), out newGuid) == true)
    {
        Response.Write(string.Format("<br/>{0} is Valid GUID.", objGuid.ToString()));
    }
    else
    {
        Response.Write(string.Format("<br/>{0} is InValid GUID.", objGuid.ToString()));
    }

    Guid newTmpGuid;

    if (Guid.TryParse(strGUID, out newTmpGuid) == true)
    {
        Response.Write(string.Format("<br/>{0} is Valid GUID.", strGUID));
    }
    else
    {
        Response.Write(string.Format("<br/>{0} is InValid GUID.", strGUID));
    }

In this example we create new guid object and also take one string variable which has invalid guid. After that we use TryParse method to validate that both variable has valid guid format or not. By running example you can see that string variable has not valid guid format and it gives message of "InValid guid". If string variable has valid guid than this will return true in TryParse method.

Invalid application path

When I got this error it appeared to be due to a security setting. When I changed the "Connect As" property to an administrator then I no longer got the message.

Obviously this isn't a good solution for a production environment - one should probably grant the least privileges necessary for the user IIS is going to be using by default. I'll update this answer if I learn more.

HTML5 input type range show range value

For those who are still searching for a solution without a separate javascript code. There is little easy solution without writing a javascript or jquery function:

_x000D_
_x000D_
<input type="range" value="24" min="1" max="100" oninput="this.nextElementSibling.value = this.value">
<output>24</output>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

JsFiddle Demo

If you want to show the value in text box, simply change output to input.

Update:

It is still Javascript written within your html, you can replace the bindings with below JS code:

 document.registrationForm.ageInputId.oninput = function(){
    document.registrationForm.ageOutputId.value = document.registrationForm.ageInputId.value;
 }

Either use element's Id or name, both are supported in morden browsers.

How to make script execution wait until jquery is loaded

you can use the defer attribute to load the script at the really end.

<script type='text/javascript' src='myscript.js' defer='defer'></script>

but normally loading your script in correct order should do the trick, so be sure to place jquery inclusion before your own script

If your code is in the page and not in a separate js file so you have to execute your script only after the document is ready and encapsulating your code like this should work too:

$(function(){
//here goes your code
});

Spring MVC: How to return image in @ResponseBody?

In addition to registering a ByteArrayHttpMessageConverter, you may want to use a ResponseEntity instead of @ResponseBody. The following code works for me :

@RequestMapping("/photo2")
public ResponseEntity<byte[]> testphoto() throws IOException {
    InputStream in = servletContext.getResourceAsStream("/images/no_image.jpg");

    final HttpHeaders headers = new HttpHeaders();
    headers.setContentType(MediaType.IMAGE_PNG);

    return new ResponseEntity<byte[]>(IOUtils.toByteArray(in), headers, HttpStatus.CREATED);
}

How do I attach events to dynamic HTML elements with jQuery?

After jQuery 1.7 the preferred methods are .on() and .off()

Sean's answer shows an example.

Now Deprecated:

Use the jQuery functions .live() and .die(). Available in jQuery 1.3.x

From the docs:

To display each paragraph's text in an alert box whenever it is clicked:

$("p").live("click", function(){
  alert( $(this).text() );
});

Also, the livequery plugin does this and has support for more events.

How to close a window using jQuery

How can I confirm a database is Oracle & what version it is using SQL?

Two methods:

select * from v$version;

will give you:

Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Edition Release 11.1.0.6.0 - 64bit Production
PL/SQL Release 11.1.0.6.0 - Production
CORE 11.1.0.6.0 Production

lists and arrays in VBA

You will have to change some of your data types but the basics of what you just posted could be converted to something similar to this given the data types I used may not be accurate.

Dim DateToday As String: DateToday = Format(Date, "yyyy/MM/dd")
Dim Computers As New Collection
Dim disabledList As New Collection
Dim compArray(1 To 1) As String

'Assign data to first item in array
compArray(1) = "asdf"

'Format = Item, Key
Computers.Add "ErrorState", "Computer Name"

'Prints "ErrorState"
Debug.Print Computers("Computer Name")

Collections cannot be sorted so if you need to sort data you will probably want to use an array.

Here is a link to the outlook developer reference. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ff866465%28v=office.14%29.aspx

Another great site to help you get started is http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/Topic.aspx

Moving everything over to VBA from VB.Net is not going to be simple since not all the data types are the same and you do not have the .Net framework. If you get stuck just post the code you're stuck converting and you will surely get some help!

}]);

How to increment variable under DOS?

I realize you've found another answer - but the fact is that your original code was nearly correct but for a syntax error.

Your code contained the line

set /A COUNTER=%COUNTER%+1

and the syntax that would work is simply...

set /A COUNTER=COUNTER+1

See http://ss64.com/nt/set.html for all the details on the SET command. I just thought I'd add this clarification for anyone else who doesn't have the option of using FreeDOS.

Android selector & text color

In order to make it work on selection in a list view use the following code:

<selector xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android">
    <item android:state_pressed="true" android:color="#fff"/>
    <item android:state_activated="true" android:color="#fff"/>
    <item android:color="#000" />
</selector>

Apparently the key is state_activated="true" state.

Best solution to protect PHP code without encryption

I have not looked at the VBulletin source code in some time, but the way they used to do it around 2003 was to embed a call to their server inside the code. IIRC, it was on a really long code line (like 200-300+ chars long) and was broken up over several string concatenations and such.

It did nothing "bad" if you pirated it - the forum still worked 100%. But your server's IP was logged along with other info and they used that to investigate and take legal action.

Your license number was embedded in this call, so they could easily track how many IPs/websites a given licensed copy was running on.

How to find which version of Oracle is installed on a Linux server (In terminal)

As A.B.Cada pointed out, you can query the database itself with sqlplus for the db version. That is the easiest way to findout what is the version of the db that is actively running. If there is more than one you will have to set the oracle_sid appropriately and run the query against each instance.

You can view /etc/oratab file to see what instance and what db home is used per instance. Its possible to have multiple version of oracle installed per server as well as multiple instances. The /etc/oratab file will list all instances and db home. From with the oracle db home you can run "opatch lsinventory" to find out what exaction version of the db is installed as well as any patches applied to that db installation.

Get root view from current activity

Get root view from current activity.

Inside our activity we can get the root view with:

ViewGroup rootView = (ViewGroup) ((ViewGroup) this

or

View rootView = getWindow().getDecorView().getRootView();

JavaScript: client-side vs. server-side validation

Client side data validation can be useful for a better user experience: for example, I a user who types wrongly his email address, should not wait til his request is processed by a remote server to learn about the typo he did.

Nevertheless, as an attacker can bypass client side validation (and may even not use the browser at all), server side validation is required, and must be the real gate to protect your backend from nefarious users.

MVC 4 Razor adding input type date

The input date value format needs the date specified as per http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc3339#section-5.6 full-date.

So I've ended up doing:

<input type="date" id="last-start-date" value="@string.Format("{0:yyyy-MM-dd}", Model.LastStartDate)" />

I did try doing it "properly" using:

[DataType(DataType.Date)]
[DisplayFormat(ApplyFormatInEditMode = true, DataFormatString = "{0:yyyy-MM-dd}")]
public DateTime LastStartDate
{
    get { return lastStartDate; }
    set { lastStartDate = value; }
}

with

@Html.TextBoxFor(model => model.LastStartDate,
    new { type = "date" })

Unfortunately that always seemed to set the value attribute of the input to a standard date time so I've ended up applying the formatting directly as above.

Edit:

According to Jorn if you use

@Html.EditorFor(model => model.LastStartDate)

instead of TextBoxFor it all works fine.

Clear the cache in JavaScript

<cfset fw.version = '001' />
<script src="/scripts/#fw.version#/foo.js"/>

installing apache: no VCRUNTIME140.dll

I had same problem, my issue was that downloaded Apache 2.4 but 32 bits. Then re-download 64bits version and it's works.

I hope it helps you

How do I use a PriorityQueue?

Here is the simple example which you can use for initial learning:

import java.util.Comparator;
import java.util.PriorityQueue;
import java.util.Queue;
import java.util.Random;

public class PQExample {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        //PriorityQueue with Comparator
        Queue<Customer> cpq = new PriorityQueue<>(7, idComp);
        addToQueue(cpq);
        pollFromQueue(cpq);
    }

    public static Comparator<Customer> idComp = new Comparator<Customer>(){

        @Override
        public int compare(Customer o1, Customer o2) {
            return (int) (o1.getId() - o2.getId());
        }

    };

    //utility method to add random data to Queue
    private static void addToQueue(Queue<Customer> cq){
        Random rand = new Random();
        for(int i=0;i<7;i++){
            int id = rand.nextInt(100);
            cq.add(new Customer(id, "KV"+id));
        }
    }

    private static void pollFromQueue(Queue<Customer> cq){
        while(true){
            Customer c = cq.poll();
            if(c == null) break;
            System.out.println("Customer Polled : "+c.getId() + " "+ c.getName());
        }

How to view the committed files you have not pushed yet?

I'm not great with Git, but this is what I do. This does not necessarily compare with the remote repo, but you can modify the git diff with the appropriate commit hash from the remote.

Say you made one commit that you haven't pushed...

First find the last two commits...

git log -2

This shows the last commit first, and descends from there...

[jason:~/git/my_project] git log -2
commit ea7937edc8b10
Author: xyz
Date:   Wed Jul 27 14:06:41 2016 -0500

    Made a change in July

commit 52f9bf7956f0
Author: xyz
Date:   Tue Jun 14 14:29:52 2016 -0500

    Made a change in June

Now just use the two commit hashes (which I abbreviated) to run a diff:

git diff 52f9bf7956f0 ea7937edc8b10

Is there a way to run Bash scripts on Windows?

After installing git-extentions (http://gitextensions.github.io/) you can run .sh file from the command prompt. (No ./script.sh required, just run it like a bat/cmd file) Or you can run them in a "full" bash environment by using the MinGW Git bash shell.

I am not a great fan of Cygwin (yes I am sure it's really powerful), so running bash scripts on windows without having to install it perfect for me.

Arduino COM port doesn't work

This fix / solution worked for me: Device Manager --> Ports --> right click on Arduino Uno --> Update Driver Software --> Search automatically for updated driver software

Invoke(Delegate)

It means that the delegate you pass is executed on the thread that created the Control object (which is the UI thread).

You need to call this method when your application is multi-threaded and you want do some UI operation from a thread other than the UI thread, because if you just try to call a method on a Control from a different thread you'll get a System.InvalidOperationException.

Sorting object property by values

Try this. Even your object is not having the property based on which you are trying to sort also will get handled.

Just call it by sending property with object.

var sortObjectByProperty = function(property,object){

    console.time("Sorting");
    var  sortedList      = [];
         emptyProperty   = [];
         tempObject      = [];
         nullProperty    = [];
    $.each(object,function(index,entry){
        if(entry.hasOwnProperty(property)){
            var propertyValue = entry[property];
            if(propertyValue!="" && propertyValue!=null){
              sortedList.push({key:propertyValue.toLowerCase().trim(),value:entry});
            }else{
                emptyProperty.push(entry);
           }
        }else{
            nullProperty.push(entry);
        }
    });

      sortedList.sort(function(a,b){
           return a.key < b.key ? -1 : 1;
         //return a.key < b.key?-1:1;   // Asc
         //return a.key < b.key?1:-1;  // Desc
      });

    $.each(sortedList,function(key,entry){
        tempObject[tempObject.length] = entry.value;
     });

    if(emptyProperty.length>0){
        tempObject.concat(emptyProperty);
    }
    if(nullProperty.length>0){
        tempObject.concat(nullProperty);
    }
    console.timeEnd("Sorting");
    return tempObject;
}

gnuplot - adjust size of key/legend

To adjust the length of the samples:

set key samplen X

(default is 4)

To adjust the vertical spacing of the samples:

set key spacing X

(default is 1.25)

and (for completeness), to adjust the fontsize:

set key font "<face>,<size>"

(default depends on the terminal)

And of course, all these can be combined into one line:

set key samplen 2 spacing .5 font ",8"

Note that you can also change the position of the key using set key at <position> or any one of the pre-defined positions (which I'll just defer to help key at this point)

'str' object does not support item assignment in Python

As aix mentioned - strings in Python are immutable (you cannot change them inplace).

What you are trying to do can be done in many ways:

# Copy the string

foo = 'Hello'
bar = foo

# Create a new string by joining all characters of the old string

new_string = ''.join(c for c in oldstring)

# Slice and copy
new_string = oldstring[:]

Run / Open VSCode from Mac Terminal

Sometimes, just adding the shell command doesn't work. We need to check whether visual studio code is available in "Applications" folder or not. That was the case for me.

The moment you download VS code, it stays in "Downloads" folder and terminal doesn't pick up from there. So, I manually moved my VS code to "Applications" folder to access from Terminal.

Step 1: Download VS code, which will give a zipped folder.

Step 2: Run it, which will give a exe kinda file in downloads folder.

Step 3: Move it to "Applications" folder manually.

Step 4: Open VS code, "Command+Shift+P" and run the shell command.

Step 5: Restart the terminal.

Step 6: Typing "Code ." on terminal should work now.

How generate unique Integers based on GUIDs

The GetHashCode function is specifically designed to create a well distributed range of integers with a low probability of collision, so for this use case is likely to be the best you can do.

But, as I'm sure you're aware, hashing 128 bits of information into 32 bits of information throws away a lot of data, so there will almost certainly be collisions if you have a sufficiently large number of GUIDs.

Hide keyboard in react-native

Keyboard.dismiss() will do it. But sometimes it may lose the focus and Keyboard will be unable to find the ref. The most consistent way to do is put a ref=_ref to the textInput, and do _ref.blur() when you need to dismiss, and _ref.focus() when you need to bring back the keyboard.

Specifying a custom DateTime format when serializing with Json.Net

Some times decorating the json convert attribute will not work ,it will through exception saying that "2010-10-01" is valid date. To avoid this types i removed json convert attribute on the property and mentioned in the deserilizedObject method like below.

var addresss = JsonConvert.DeserializeObject<AddressHistory>(address, new IsoDateTimeConverter { DateTimeFormat = "yyyy-MM-dd" });

How to extract request http headers from a request using NodeJS connect

Android: Quit application when press back button

When you press back and then you finish your current activity(say A), you see a blank activity with your app logo(say B), this simply means that activity B which is shown after finishing A is still in backstack, and also activity A was started from activity B, so in activity, You should start activity A with flags as

Intent launchNextActivity;
launchNextActivity = new Intent(B.class, A.class);
launchNextActivity.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
launchNextActivity.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TASK);
launchNextActivity.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NO_ANIMATION);
startActivity(launchNextActivity);

Now your activity A is top on stack with no other activities of your application on the backstack.

Now in the activity A where you want to implement onBackPressed to close the app, you may do something like this,

private Boolean exit = false;
@Override
    public void onBackPressed() {
        if (exit) {
            finish(); // finish activity
        } else {
            Toast.makeText(this, "Press Back again to Exit.",
                    Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show();
            exit = true;
            new Handler().postDelayed(new Runnable() {
                @Override
                public void run() {
                    exit = false;
                }
            }, 3 * 1000);

        }

    }

The Handler here handles accidental back presses, it simply shows a Toast, and if there is another back press within 3 seconds, it closes the application.

How does spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto property exactly work in Spring?

For the record, the spring.jpa.hibernate.ddl-auto property is Spring Data JPA specific and is their way to specify a value that will eventually be passed to Hibernate under the property it knows, hibernate.hbm2ddl.auto.

The values create, create-drop, validate, and update basically influence how the schema tool management will manipulate the database schema at startup.

For example, the update operation will query the JDBC driver's API to get the database metadata and then Hibernate compares the object model it creates based on reading your annotated classes or HBM XML mappings and will attempt to adjust the schema on-the-fly.

The update operation for example will attempt to add new columns, constraints, etc but will never remove a column or constraint that may have existed previously but no longer does as part of the object model from a prior run.

Typically in test case scenarios, you'll likely use create-drop so that you create your schema, your test case adds some mock data, you run your tests, and then during the test case cleanup, the schema objects are dropped, leaving an empty database.

In development, it's often common to see developers use update to automatically modify the schema to add new additions upon restart. But again understand, this does not remove a column or constraint that may exist from previous executions that is no longer necessary.

In production, it's often highly recommended you use none or simply don't specify this property. That is because it's common practice for DBAs to review migration scripts for database changes, particularly if your database is shared across multiple services and applications.

How to Copy Text to Clip Board in Android?

Here the method to copy text to clipboard:

private void setClipboard(Context context, String text) {
  if(android.os.Build.VERSION.SDK_INT < android.os.Build.VERSION_CODES.HONEYCOMB) {
    android.text.ClipboardManager clipboard = (android.text.ClipboardManager) context.getSystemService(Context.CLIPBOARD_SERVICE);

    android.content.ClipboardManager clipboard = (android.content.ClipboardManager) context.getSystemService(Context.CLIPBOARD_SERVICE);
    android.content.ClipData clip = android.content.ClipData.newPlainText("Copied Text", text);
    clipboard.setPrimaryClip(clip);
  }
}

This method is working on all android devices.

Why can't I enter a string in Scanner(System.in), when calling nextLine()-method?

if you don't want to use parser :

int a;
String s;
Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);

System.out.println("enter a no");
a = scan.nextInt();
System.out.println("no is =" + a);
scan.nextLine(); // This line you have to add (It consumes the \n character)
System.out.println("enter a string");
s = scan.nextLine();
System.out.println("string is=" + s);

Optimal number of threads per core

If your threads don't do I/O, synchronization, etc., and there's nothing else running, 1 thread per core will get you the best performance. However that very likely not the case. Adding more threads usually helps, but after some point, they cause some performance degradation.

Not long ago, I was doing performance testing on a 2 quad-core machine running an ASP.NET application on Mono under a pretty decent load. We played with the minimum and maximum number of threads and in the end we found out that for that particular application in that particular configuration the best throughput was somewhere between 36 and 40 threads. Anything outside those boundaries performed worse. Lesson learned? If I were you, I would test with different number of threads until you find the right number for your application.

One thing for sure: 4k threads will take longer. That's a lot of context switches.

How to fix Hibernate LazyInitializationException: failed to lazily initialize a collection of roles, could not initialize proxy - no Session

You need to either add fetch=FetchType.EAGER inside your ManyToMany annotations to automatically pull back child entities:

@ManyToMany(fetch = FetchType.EAGER)

A better option would be to implement a spring transactionManager by adding the following to your spring configuration file:

<bean id="transactionManager"
    class="org.springframework.orm.hibernate4.HibernateTransactionManager">
    <property name="sessionFactory" ref="sessionFactory" />
</bean>

<tx:annotation-driven />

You can then add an @Transactional annotation to your authenticate method like so:

@Transactional
public Authentication authenticate(Authentication authentication)

This will then start a db transaction for the duration of the authenticate method allowing any lazy collection to be retrieved from the db as and when you try to use them.

How to take screenshot of a div with JavaScript?

As far as I know its not possible with javascript.

What you can do for every result create a screenshot, save it somewhere and point the user when clicked on save result. (I guess no of result is only 10 so not a big deal to create 10 jpeg image of results)

Excel - Button to go to a certain sheet

You don't need to create a button. The facility exists by default.

Just right click on the arrow buttons on the bottom left hand corner of the Excel window. These are the arrow buttons which if you left click move left or right one worksheet.

If you right-click on these arrows Excel will pop up a dialogue with a list of worksheets from which you can click to set your chosen sheet active.

How do I convert struct System.Byte byte[] to a System.IO.Stream object in C#?

If you are getting an error with the other MemoryStream examples here, then you need to set the Position to 0.

    return new MemoryStream(bytes)
    {
        Position = 0
    };

How to read from a file or STDIN in Bash?

Here is the simplest way:

#!/bin/sh
cat -

Usage:

$ echo test | sh my_script.sh
test

To assign stdin to the variable, you may use: STDIN=$(cat -) or just simply STDIN=$(cat) as operator is not necessary (as per @mklement0 comment).

To parse each line from the standard input, try the following script:

#!/bin/bash
while IFS= read -r line; do
  printf '%s\n' "$line"
done

To read from the file or stdin (if argument is not present), you can extend it to:

#!/bin/bash
file=${1--} # POSIX-compliant; ${1:--} can be used either.
while IFS= read -r line; do
  printf '%s\n' "$line" # Or: env POSIXLY_CORRECT=1 echo "$line"
done < <(cat -- "$file")

Notes:

- read -r - Do not treat a backslash character in any special way. Consider each backslash to be part of the input line.

- Without setting IFS, by default the sequences of Space and Tab at the beginning and end of the lines are ignored (trimmed).

- Use printf instead of echo to avoid printing empty lines when the line consists of a single -e, -n or -E. However there is a workaround by using env POSIXLY_CORRECT=1 echo "$line" which executes your external GNU echo which supports it. See: How do I echo "-e"?

where is gacutil.exe?

gacutil comes with Visual Studio, not with VSTS. It is part of Windows SDK and can be download separately at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=F26B1AA4-741A-433A-9BE5-FA919850BDBF&displaylang=en . This installation will have gacutil.exe included. But first check it here

C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin

you might have it installed.

As @devi mentioned

If you decide to grab gacutil files from existing installation, note that from .NET 4.0 is three files: gacutil.exe gacutil.exe.config and 1033/gacutlrc.dll

count number of rows in a data frame in R based on group

Suppose we have a df_data data frame as below

> df_data
   ID MONTH-YEAR VALUE
1 110   JAN.2012  1000
2 111   JAN.2012  2000
3 121   FEB.2012  3000
4 131   FEB.2012  4000
5 141   MAR.2012  5000

To count number of rows in df_data grouped by MONTH-YEAR column, you can use:

Is there a version of JavaScript's String.indexOf() that allows for regular expressions?

var mystring = "abc ab a";
var re = new RegExp("ab"); // any regex here

if ( re.exec(mystring) != null ){
   alert("matches"); // true in this case

Use standard regular expressions:

var re = new RegExp("^ab"); // At front
var re = new RegExp("ab$"); // At end
var re = new RegExp("ab(c|d)"); // abc or abd

unbound method f() must be called with fibo_ instance as first argument (got classobj instance instead)

Differences in In python 2 and 3 version:

If you already have a default method in a class with same name and you re-declare as a same name it will appear as unbound-method call of that class instance when you wanted to instantiated it.

If you wanted class methods, but you declared them as instance methods instead.

An instance method is a method that is used when to create an instance of the class.

An example would be

   def user_group(self): #This is an instance method
        return "instance method returning group"

Class label method:

   @classmethod
   def user_group(groups):   #This is an class-label method
        return "class method returning group"

In python 2 and 3 version differ the class @classmethod to write in python 3 it automatically get that as a class-label method and don't need to write @classmethod I think this might help you.

How to generate a random string of a fixed length in Go?

Paul's solution provides a simple, general solution.

The question asks for the "the fastest and simplest way". Let's address the fastest part too. We'll arrive at our final, fastest code in an iterative manner. Benchmarking each iteration can be found at the end of the answer.

All the solutions and the benchmarking code can be found on the Go Playground. The code on the Playground is a test file, not an executable. You have to save it into a file named XX_test.go and run it with

go test -bench . -benchmem

Foreword:

The fastest solution is not a go-to solution if you just need a random string. For that, Paul's solution is perfect. This is if performance does matter. Although the first 2 steps (Bytes and Remainder) might be an acceptable compromise: they do improve performance by like 50% (see exact numbers in the II. Benchmark section), and they don't increase complexity significantly.

Having said that, even if you don't need the fastest solution, reading through this answer might be adventurous and educational.

I. Improvements

1. Genesis (Runes)

As a reminder, the original, general solution we're improving is this:

func init() {
    rand.Seed(time.Now().UnixNano())
}

var letterRunes = []rune("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ")

func RandStringRunes(n int) string {
    b := make([]rune, n)
    for i := range b {
        b[i] = letterRunes[rand.Intn(len(letterRunes))]
    }
    return string(b)
}

2. Bytes

If the characters to choose from and assemble the random string contains only the uppercase and lowercase letters of the English alphabet, we can work with bytes only because the English alphabet letters map to bytes 1-to-1 in the UTF-8 encoding (which is how Go stores strings).

So instead of:

var letters = []rune("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ")

we can use:

var letters = []bytes("abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ")

Or even better:

const letters = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"

Now this is already a big improvement: we could achieve it to be a const (there are string constants but there are no slice constants). As an extra gain, the expression len(letters) will also be a const! (The expression len(s) is constant if s is a string constant.)

And at what cost? Nothing at all. strings can be indexed which indexes its bytes, perfect, exactly what we want.

Our next destination looks like this:

const letterBytes = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"

func RandStringBytes(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    for i := range b {
        b[i] = letterBytes[rand.Intn(len(letterBytes))]
    }
    return string(b)
}

3. Remainder

Previous solutions get a random number to designate a random letter by calling rand.Intn() which delegates to Rand.Intn() which delegates to Rand.Int31n().

This is much slower compared to rand.Int63() which produces a random number with 63 random bits.

So we could simply call rand.Int63() and use the remainder after dividing by len(letterBytes):

func RandStringBytesRmndr(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    for i := range b {
        b[i] = letterBytes[rand.Int63() % int64(len(letterBytes))]
    }
    return string(b)
}

This works and is significantly faster, the disadvantage is that the probability of all the letters will not be exactly the same (assuming rand.Int63() produces all 63-bit numbers with equal probability). Although the distortion is extremely small as the number of letters 52 is much-much smaller than 1<<63 - 1, so in practice this is perfectly fine.

To make this understand easier: let's say you want a random number in the range of 0..5. Using 3 random bits, this would produce the numbers 0..1 with double probability than from the range 2..5. Using 5 random bits, numbers in range 0..1 would occur with 6/32 probability and numbers in range 2..5 with 5/32 probability which is now closer to the desired. Increasing the number of bits makes this less significant, when reaching 63 bits, it is negligible.

4. Masking

Building on the previous solution, we can maintain the equal distribution of letters by using only as many of the lowest bits of the random number as many is required to represent the number of letters. So for example if we have 52 letters, it requires 6 bits to represent it: 52 = 110100b. So we will only use the lowest 6 bits of the number returned by rand.Int63(). And to maintain equal distribution of letters, we only "accept" the number if it falls in the range 0..len(letterBytes)-1. If the lowest bits are greater, we discard it and query a new random number.

Note that the chance of the lowest bits to be greater than or equal to len(letterBytes) is less than 0.5 in general (0.25 on average), which means that even if this would be the case, repeating this "rare" case decreases the chance of not finding a good number. After n repetition, the chance that we still don't have a good index is much less than pow(0.5, n), and this is just an upper estimation. In case of 52 letters the chance that the 6 lowest bits are not good is only (64-52)/64 = 0.19; which means for example that chances to not have a good number after 10 repetition is 1e-8.

So here is the solution:

const letterBytes = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
const (
    letterIdxBits = 6                    // 6 bits to represent a letter index
    letterIdxMask = 1<<letterIdxBits - 1 // All 1-bits, as many as letterIdxBits
)

func RandStringBytesMask(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    for i := 0; i < n; {
        if idx := int(rand.Int63() & letterIdxMask); idx < len(letterBytes) {
            b[i] = letterBytes[idx]
            i++
        }
    }
    return string(b)
}

5. Masking Improved

The previous solution only uses the lowest 6 bits of the 63 random bits returned by rand.Int63(). This is a waste as getting the random bits is the slowest part of our algorithm.

If we have 52 letters, that means 6 bits code a letter index. So 63 random bits can designate 63/6 = 10 different letter indices. Let's use all those 10:

const letterBytes = "abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ"
const (
    letterIdxBits = 6                    // 6 bits to represent a letter index
    letterIdxMask = 1<<letterIdxBits - 1 // All 1-bits, as many as letterIdxBits
    letterIdxMax  = 63 / letterIdxBits   // # of letter indices fitting in 63 bits
)

func RandStringBytesMaskImpr(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    // A rand.Int63() generates 63 random bits, enough for letterIdxMax letters!
    for i, cache, remain := n-1, rand.Int63(), letterIdxMax; i >= 0; {
        if remain == 0 {
            cache, remain = rand.Int63(), letterIdxMax
        }
        if idx := int(cache & letterIdxMask); idx < len(letterBytes) {
            b[i] = letterBytes[idx]
            i--
        }
        cache >>= letterIdxBits
        remain--
    }

    return string(b)
}

6. Source

The Masking Improved is pretty good, not much we can improve on it. We could, but not worth the complexity.

Now let's find something else to improve. The source of random numbers.

There is a crypto/rand package which provides a Read(b []byte) function, so we could use that to get as many bytes with a single call as many we need. This wouldn't help in terms of performance as crypto/rand implements a cryptographically secure pseudorandom number generator so it's much slower.

So let's stick to the math/rand package. The rand.Rand uses a rand.Source as the source of random bits. rand.Source is an interface which specifies a Int63() int64 method: exactly and the only thing we needed and used in our latest solution.

So we don't really need a rand.Rand (either explicit or the global, shared one of the rand package), a rand.Source is perfectly enough for us:

var src = rand.NewSource(time.Now().UnixNano())

func RandStringBytesMaskImprSrc(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    // A src.Int63() generates 63 random bits, enough for letterIdxMax characters!
    for i, cache, remain := n-1, src.Int63(), letterIdxMax; i >= 0; {
        if remain == 0 {
            cache, remain = src.Int63(), letterIdxMax
        }
        if idx := int(cache & letterIdxMask); idx < len(letterBytes) {
            b[i] = letterBytes[idx]
            i--
        }
        cache >>= letterIdxBits
        remain--
    }

    return string(b)
}

Also note that this last solution doesn't require you to initialize (seed) the global Rand of the math/rand package as that is not used (and our rand.Source is properly initialized / seeded).

One more thing to note here: package doc of math/rand states:

The default Source is safe for concurrent use by multiple goroutines.

So the default source is slower than a Source that may be obtained by rand.NewSource(), because the default source has to provide safety under concurrent access / use, while rand.NewSource() does not offer this (and thus the Source returned by it is more likely to be faster).

7. Utilizing strings.Builder

All previous solutions return a string whose content is first built in a slice ([]rune in Genesis, and []byte in subsequent solutions), and then converted to string. This final conversion has to make a copy of the slice's content, because string values are immutable, and if the conversion would not make a copy, it could not be guaranteed that the string's content is not modified via its original slice. For details, see How to convert utf8 string to []byte? and golang: []byte(string) vs []byte(*string).

Go 1.10 introduced strings.Builder. strings.Builder is a new type we can use to build contents of a string similar to bytes.Buffer. Internally it uses a []byte to build the content, and when we're done, we can obtain the final string value using its Builder.String() method. But what's cool in it is that it does this without performing the copy we just talked about above. It dares to do so because the byte slice used to build the string's content is not exposed, so it is guaranteed that no one can modify it unintentionally or maliciously to alter the produced "immutable" string.

So our next idea is to not build the random string in a slice, but with the help of a strings.Builder, so once we're done, we can obtain and return the result without having to make a copy of it. This may help in terms of speed, and it will definitely help in terms of memory usage and allocations.

func RandStringBytesMaskImprSrcSB(n int) string {
    sb := strings.Builder{}
    sb.Grow(n)
    // A src.Int63() generates 63 random bits, enough for letterIdxMax characters!
    for i, cache, remain := n-1, src.Int63(), letterIdxMax; i >= 0; {
        if remain == 0 {
            cache, remain = src.Int63(), letterIdxMax
        }
        if idx := int(cache & letterIdxMask); idx < len(letterBytes) {
            sb.WriteByte(letterBytes[idx])
            i--
        }
        cache >>= letterIdxBits
        remain--
    }

    return sb.String()
}

Do note that after creating a new strings.Buidler, we called its Builder.Grow() method, making sure it allocates a big-enough internal slice (to avoid reallocations as we add the random letters).

8. "Mimicing" strings.Builder with package unsafe

strings.Builder builds the string in an internal []byte, the same as we did ourselves. So basically doing it via a strings.Builder has some overhead, the only thing we switched to strings.Builder for is to avoid the final copying of the slice.

strings.Builder avoids the final copy by using package unsafe:

// String returns the accumulated string.
func (b *Builder) String() string {
    return *(*string)(unsafe.Pointer(&b.buf))
}

The thing is, we can also do this ourselves, too. So the idea here is to switch back to building the random string in a []byte, but when we're done, don't convert it to string to return, but do an unsafe conversion: obtain a string which points to our byte slice as the string data.

This is how it can be done:

func RandStringBytesMaskImprSrcUnsafe(n int) string {
    b := make([]byte, n)
    // A src.Int63() generates 63 random bits, enough for letterIdxMax characters!
    for i, cache, remain := n-1, src.Int63(), letterIdxMax; i >= 0; {
        if remain == 0 {
            cache, remain = src.Int63(), letterIdxMax
        }
        if idx := int(cache & letterIdxMask); idx < len(letterBytes) {
            b[i] = letterBytes[idx]
            i--
        }
        cache >>= letterIdxBits
        remain--
    }

    return *(*string)(unsafe.Pointer(&b))
}

(9. Using rand.Read())

Go 1.7 added a rand.Read() function and a Rand.Read() method. We should be tempted to use these to read as many bytes as we need in one step, in order to achieve better performance.

There is one small "problem" with this: how many bytes do we need? We could say: as many as the number of output letters. We would think this is an upper estimation, as a letter index uses less than 8 bits (1 byte). But at this point we are already doing worse (as getting the random bits is the "hard part"), and we're getting more than needed.

Also note that to maintain equal distribution of all letter indices, there might be some "garbage" random data that we won't be able to use, so we would end up skipping some data, and thus end up short when we go through all the byte slice. We would need to further get more random bytes, "recursively". And now we're even losing the "single call to rand package" advantage...

We could "somewhat" optimize the usage of the random data we acquire from math.Rand(). We may estimate how many bytes (bits) we'll need. 1 letter requires letterIdxBits bits, and we need n letters, so we need n * letterIdxBits / 8.0 bytes rounding up. We can calculate the probability of a random index not being usable (see above), so we could request more that will "more likely" be enough (if it turns out it's not, we repeat the process). We can process the byte slice as a "bit stream" for example, for which we have a nice 3rd party lib: github.com/icza/bitio (disclosure: I'm the author).

But Benchmark code still shows we're not winning. Why is it so?

The answer to the last question is because rand.Read() uses a loop and keeps calling Source.Int63() until it fills the passed slice. Exactly what the RandStringBytesMaskImprSrc() solution does, without the intermediate buffer, and without the added complexity. That's why RandStringBytesMaskImprSrc() remains on the throne. Yes, RandStringBytesMaskImprSrc() uses an unsynchronized rand.Source unlike rand.Read(). But the reasoning still applies; and which is proven if we use Rand.Read() instead of rand.Read() (the former is also unsynchronzed).

II. Benchmark

All right, it's time for benchmarking the different solutions.

Moment of truth:

BenchmarkRunes-4                     2000000    723 ns/op   96 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytes-4                     3000000    550 ns/op   32 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesRmndr-4                3000000    438 ns/op   32 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesMask-4                 3000000    534 ns/op   32 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesMaskImpr-4            10000000    176 ns/op   32 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesMaskImprSrc-4         10000000    139 ns/op   32 B/op   2 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesMaskImprSrcSB-4       10000000    134 ns/op   16 B/op   1 allocs/op
BenchmarkBytesMaskImprSrcUnsafe-4   10000000    115 ns/op   16 B/op   1 allocs/op

Just by switching from runes to bytes, we immediately have 24% performance gain, and memory requirement drops to one third.

Getting rid of rand.Intn() and using rand.Int63() instead gives another 20% boost.

Masking (and repeating in case of big indices) slows down a little (due to repetition calls): -22%...

But when we make use of all (or most) of the 63 random bits (10 indices from one rand.Int63() call): that speeds up big time: 3 times.

If we settle with a (non-default, new) rand.Source instead of rand.Rand, we again gain 21%.

If we utilize strings.Builder, we gain a tiny 3.5% in speed, but we also achieved 50% reduction in memory usage and allocations! That's nice!

Finally if we dare to use package unsafe instead of strings.Builder, we again gain a nice 14%.

Comparing the final to the initial solution: RandStringBytesMaskImprSrcUnsafe() is 6.3 times faster than RandStringRunes(), uses one sixth memory and half as few allocations. Mission accomplished.

How does one represent the empty char?

There is no such thing as the "empty character" ''.

If you need a space character, that can be represented as a space: c[i] = ' ' or as its ASCII octal equivalent: c[i] = '\040'. If you need a NUL character that's c[i] = '\0'.

TypeError: int() argument must be a string, a bytes-like object or a number, not 'list'

What the error is telling, is that you can't convert an entire list into an integer. You could get an index from the list and convert that into an integer:

x = ["0", "1", "2"]
y = int(x[0]) #accessing the zeroth element

If you're trying to convert a whole list into an integer, you are going to have to convert the list into a string first:

x = ["0", "1", "2"]
y = ''.join(x) # converting list into string
z = int(y)

If your list elements are not strings, you'll have to convert them to strings before using str.join:

x = [0, 1, 2]
y = ''.join(map(str, x))
z = int(y)

Also, as stated above, make sure that you're not returning a nested list.

Installing PIL (Python Imaging Library) in Win7 64 bits, Python 2.6.4

I found a working win7 binary here: Unofficial Windows Binaries for Python Extension Packages It's from Christoph Gohlke at UC Irvine. There are binaries for python 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 , 3.1 and 3.2 for both 32bit and 64 bit windows.

There are a whole lot of other compiled packages here, too.

Be sure to uninstall your old PILfirst. If you used easy_install: easy_install -mnX pil
And then remove the egg in python/Lib/site-packages

Be sure to remove any other failed attempts. I had moved the _image dll into Python*.*/DLLs and I had to remove it.

How to enable Google Play App Signing

There is a much simpler solution that will take a minute.

  1. In google play console, select Release management -> App signing
  2. Choose the first option, the one with Generate encrypted private key with Android Studio (or something like that; I cannot turn back to see that page anymore)
  3. In Android Studio generate your Android App Bundle (.aap file) from Build -> Generate Signed Bundle / APK..., choose Android App Bundle option and don't forget to check Export Encrypted key (needed to enroll your app Google Play App signing) option. If you do not have a keystore generated, generate one ad-hoc.
  4. Now the "tricky" part. After the .aap is generated, Android Studio will pop up a notification in the bottom right corner containing a path to the location where the .aap file is saved. In the same notification, if you will expand it you will find another link to the path where the private key was saved (called private_key.pepk). If you miss this notification, don't worry, just open Event Log window by clicking the Event Log button on the bottom right side and you will find the same info. Open that location.For me was C:\Users\yourUser\.android

enter image description here

  1. Go back in browser and press APP SIGNING PRIVATE KEY button and browse to the private key location on your computer.

Done!

Now you are able to upload your release that you generated earlier :) Good luck!
