There is something very important about this thread that has been touched on but not fully explained. The HTML approach (adding a meta tag in the head) only works consistently on raw HTML or very basic server pages. My site is a very complex server-driven site with master pages, themeing and a lot of third party controls, etc. What I found was that some of these controls were programmatically adding their own tags to the final HTML which were being pushed to the browser at the beginning of the head tag. This effectively rendered the HTML meta tags useless.

Well, if you can't beat them, join them. The only solution that worked for me is to do exactly the same thing in the pre-render event of my master pages as such:

This is VB.NET but the same approach would work for any server-side technology. As long as you make sure it's the last thing that gets done right before the page is rendered.

The best method is to use a http header

Adding the meta tag to the head doesn't always work because IE might have determined the mode before it's read. The best way to make sure IE always uses standards mode is to use a custom http header.

Header:

name: X-UA-Compatible  
value: IE=edge

For example in a .NET application you could put this in the web.config file.

Calling a method inside another method in same class

The add method that takes a String and a Person is calling a different add method that takes a Position. The one that takes Position is inherited from the ArrayList class.

Since your class Staff extends ArrayList<Position>, it automatically has the add(Position) method. The new add(String, Person) method is one that was written particularly for the Staff class.

What is the difference between a hash join and a merge join (Oracle RDBMS )?

I just want to edit this for posterity that the tags for oracle weren't added when I answered this question. My response was more applicable to MS SQL.

Merge join is the best possible as it exploits the ordering, resulting in a single pass down the tables to do the join. IF you have two tables (or covering indexes) that have their ordering the same such as a primary key and an index of a table on that key then a merge join would result if you performed that action.

Hash join is the next best, as it's usually done when one table has a small number (relatively) of items, its effectively creating a temp table with hashes for each row which is then searched continuously to create the join.

Worst case is nested loop which is order (n * m) which means there is no ordering or size to exploit and the join is simply, for each row in table x, search table y for joins to do.

Believe or not, keytool does not provide such basic functionality like importing private key to keystore. You can try this workaround with merging PKSC12 file with private key to a keystore:

Original purpose of <input type="hidden">?

The values of form elements including type='hidden' are submitted to the server when the form is posted. input type="hidden" values are not visible in the page. Maintaining User IDs in hidden fields, for example, is one of the many uses.

SO uses a hidden field for the upvote click.

Casting a number to a string in TypeScript

Very simple and clean function to break the back arrow without interfering with the page afterward.

Benefits:

Loads instantaneously and restores original hash, so the user isn't distracted by URL visibly changing.
The user can still exit by pressing back 10 times (that's a good thing), but not accidentally
No user interference like other solutions using onbeforeunload
It only runs once and doesn't interfere with further hash manipulations in case you use that to track state
Restores original hash, so almost invisible.
Uses setInterval, so it doesn't break slow browsers and always works.
Pure JavaScript, does not require HTML5 history, works everywhere.
Unobtrusive, simple, and plays well with other code.
Does not use unbeforeunload which interrupts user with modal dialog.
It just works without fuss.

Note: some of the other solutions use onbeforeunload. Please do not use onbeforeunload for this purpose, which pops up a dialog whenever users try to close the window, hit backarrow, etc. Modals like onbeforeunload are usually only appropriate in rare circumstances, such as when they've actually made changes on screen and haven't saved them, not for this purpose.

How do I associate file types with an iPhone application?

In addition to Brad's excellent answer, I have found out that (on iOS 4.2.1 at least) when opening custom files from the Mail app, your app is not fired or notified if the attachment has been opened before. The "open with…" popup appears, but just does nothing.

This seems to be fixed by (re)moving the file from the Inbox directory. A safe approach seems to be to both (re)move the file as it is opened (in -(BOOL)application:openURL:sourceApplication:annotation:) as well as going through the Documents/Inbox directory, removing all items, e.g. in applicationDidBecomeActive:. That last catch-all may be needed to get the app in a clean state again, in case a previous import causes a crash or is interrupted.

Content-Type: application/json is just the content header. The content header is just information about the type of returned data, ex::JSON,image(png,jpg,etc..),html.

Difference between applicationContext.xml and spring-servlet.xml in Spring Framework

Spring lets you define multiple contexts in a parent-child hierarchy.

The applicationContext.xml defines the beans for the "root webapp context", i.e. the context associated with the webapp.

The spring-servlet.xml (or whatever else you call it) defines the beans for one servlet's app context. There can be many of these in a webapp, one per Spring servlet (e.g. spring1-servlet.xml for servlet spring1, spring2-servlet.xml for servlet spring2).

Beans in spring-servlet.xml can reference beans in applicationContext.xml, but not vice versa.

All Spring MVC controllers must go in the spring-servlet.xml context.

In most simple cases, the applicationContext.xml context is unnecessary. It is generally used to contain beans that are shared between all servlets in a webapp. If you only have one servlet, then there's not really much point, unless you have a specific use for it.

Chrome local problem

Another thing could be the problem that chrome can't display favicons, if it's local (not uploaded to a webserver). Only if the file/icon would be in the downloads directory chrome is allowed to load this data - more information about this can be found here: local (file://) website favicon works in Firefox, not in Chrome or Safari- why?

Renaming

Try to rename it from favicon.{whatever} to {yourfaviconname}.{whatever} but I would suggest you to still have the normal favicon. This has solved my issue on IE.

Base64 approach

Found another solution for this which works great! I simply added my favicon as Base64 Encoded Image directly inside the tag like this:

Based on Joey's answer, I came up with an intended (by jQuery, read about 'queue') solution.

It somewhat follows the jQuery.animate() syntax - allows to be chained with other fx functions, supports 'slow' and other jQuery.fx.speeds as well as being fully jQuery. And will be handled the same way as animations, if you stop those.

To see a list of available simulators via terminal, type:

To start the device via terminal, simply type:

To shut it down, type:

The querying capability of an OData service requires you to construct URIs based on information that is not available, or linked to in the response. It is what REST people call out-of-band information and introduces hidden coupling between the client and server.

The other coupling that is introduced is through the use of EDMX metadata to define the properties contained in the entry content. This metadata can be discovered at a fixed endpoint called $metadata. Again, the client needs to know this in advance, it cannot be discovered.

Unfortunately, Microsoft did not see fit to create media types to describe these key pieces of data, so any OData client has to make a bunch of assumptions about the service that it is talking to and the data it is receiving.

Apache Maven install "'mvn' not recognized as an internal or external command" after setting OS environmental variables?

As others have done, creating new System variables M2 and M2_HOME solved the problem. Just making User variables M2 and M2_HOME on my Windows XP machine led to maven not being recognised from the command line. I then deleted the User variables, created copies as System variables and it all came to life.

This was apache-maven-3.0.4 with XP sp3. So the instructions in: http://maven.apache.org/download.cgi seem incorrect.

First you need to create a login for SQL Azure, its syntax is as follows:

This command needs to run in master db. Only afterwards can you run commands to create a user in the database. The way SQL Azure or SQL Server works is that there is a login created first at the server level and then it is mapped to a user in every database.

Java Immutable Collections

I believe the point here is that even if a collection is Unmodifiable, that does not ensure that it cannot change. Take for example a collection that evicts elements if they are too old. Unmodifiable just means that the object holding the reference cannot change it, not that it cannot change. A true example of this is Collections.unmodifiableList method. It returns an unmodifiable view of a List. The the List reference that was passed into this method is still modifiable and so the list can be modified by any holder of the reference that was passed. This can result in ConcurrentModificationExceptions and other bad things.

Immutable, mean that in no way can the collection be changed.

Second question: An Immutable collection does not mean that the objects contained in the collection will not change, just that collection will not change in the number and composition of objects that it holds. In other words, the collection's list of references will not change. That does not mean that the internals of the object being referenced cannot change.

I don't believe the "RetainSameConnection on the Connection Manager" property is relevant in this instance based on my recent experience. Your issue is not with port 8080, but with port 8005. Port 8005 is the shutdown port for Tomcat.

Rather than trying to figure out what is using port 8005, it may just be easier to edit TOMCAT_DIR/conf/server.xml and change the shutdown port to 8006

In short you need to install FreeTDS ~~and YES you need to use mssql_* functions~~ on linux. see update 2

To simplify things in the long run I would recommend creating a wrapper class with requisite functions which use the appropriate API (sqlsrv_* or mssql_*) based on which extension is loaded.

Update 2: You do not need to use mssql_* functions on linux. You can connect to an ms sql server using PDO + ODBC + FreeTDS. On windows, the best performing method to connect is via PDO + ODBC + SQL Native Client since the PDO + SQLSRV driver can be incredibly slow.

Difference between OpenJDK and Adoptium/AdoptOpenJDK

In short:

OpenJDK has multiple meanings and can refer to:
- free and open source implementation of the Java Platform, Standard Edition (Java SE)
- open source repository — the Java source code aka OpenJDK project
- prebuilt OpenJDK binaries maintained by Oracle
- prebuilt OpenJDK binaries maintained by the OpenJDK community
AdoptOpenJDK — prebuilt OpenJDK binaries maintained by community (open source licensed)

Explanation:

Prebuilt OpenJDK (or distribution) — binaries, built from http://hg.openjdk.java.net/, provided as an archive or installer, offered for various platforms, with a possible support contract.

OpenJDK, the source repository (also called OpenJDK project) - is a Mercurial-based open source repository, hosted at http://hg.openjdk.java.net. The Java source code. The vast majority of Java features (from the VM and the core libraries to the compiler) are based solely on this source repository. Oracle have an alternate fork of this.

OpenJDK, the distribution (see the list of providers below) - is free as in beer and kind of free as in speech, but, you do not get to call Oracle if you have problems with it. There is no support contract. Furthermore, Oracle will only release updates to any OpenJDK (the distribution) version if that release is the most recent Java release, including LTS (long-term support) releases. The day Oracle releases OpenJDK (the distribution) version 12.0, even if there's a security issue with OpenJDK (the distribution) version 11.0, Oracle will not release an update for 11.0. Maintained solely by Oracle.

Some OpenJDK projects - such as OpenJDK 8 and OpenJDK 11 - are maintained by the OpenJDK community and provide releases for some OpenJDK versions for some platforms. The community members have taken responsibility for releasing fixes for security vulnerabilities in these OpenJDK versions.

AdoptOpenJDK, the distribution is very similar to Oracle's OpenJDK distribution (in that it is free, and it is a build produced by compiling the sources from the OpenJDK source repository). AdoptOpenJDK as an entity will not be backporting patches, i.e. there won't be an AdoptOpenJDK 'fork/version' that is materially different from upstream (except for some build script patches for things like Win32 support). Meaning, if members of the community (Oracle or others, but not AdoptOpenJDK as an entity) backport security fixes to updates of OpenJDK LTS versions, then AdoptOpenJDK will provide builds for those. Maintained by OpenJDK community.

OracleJDK - is yet another distribution. Starting with JDK12 there will be no free version of OracleJDK. Oracle's JDK distribution offering is intended for commercial support. You pay for this, but then you get to rely on Oracle for support. Unlike Oracle's OpenJDK offering, OracleJDK comes with longer support for LTS versions. As a developer you can get a free license for personal/development use only of this particular JDK, but that's mostly a red herring, as 'just the binary' is basically the same as the OpenJDK binary. I guess it means you can download security-patched versions of LTS JDKs from Oracle's websites as long as you promise not to use them commercially.

Note. It may be best to call the OpenJDK builds by Oracle the "Oracle OpenJDK builds".

Which Java Distribution Should I Use?

In the Sun/Oracle days, it was usually Sun/Oracle producing the proprietary downstream JDK distributions based on OpenJDK sources. Recently, Oracle had decided to do their own proprietary builds only with the commercial support attached. They graciously publish the OpenJDK builds as well on their https://jdk.java.net/ site.

What is happening starting JDK 11 is the shift from single-vendor (Oracle) mindset to the mindset where you select a provider that gives you a distribution for the product, under the conditions you like: platforms they build for, frequency and promptness of releases, how support is structured, etc. If you don't trust any of existing vendors, you can even build OpenJDK yourself.

Each build of OpenJDK is usually made from the same original upstream source repository (OpenJDK “the project”). However each build is quite unique - $free or commercial, branded or unbranded, pure or bundled (e.g., BellSoft Liberica JDK offers bundled JavaFX, which was removed from Oracle builds starting JDK 11).

If no environment (e.g., Linux) and/or license requirement defines specific distribution and if you want the most standard JDK build, then probably the best option is to use OpenJDK by Oracle or AdoptOpenJDK.

Using require-dev in Composer you can declare the dependencies you need for development/testing the project but don't need in production. When you upload the project to your production server (using git) require-dev part would be ignored.

You say your website is in http://localhost/mywebsite, and let's say that your image is inside a subfolder named pictures/:

Absolute path

If you use an absolute path, / would point to the root of the site, not the root of the document: localhost in your case. That's why you need to specify your document's folder in order to access the pictures folder:

Relative path

A relative path is always relative to the root of the document, so if your html is at the same level of the directory, you'd need to start the path directly with your picture's directory name:

Do not access or modify the collection in the Comparator. The comparator should be used only to determine which object is comes before another. The two objects that are to be compared are supplied as arguments.

Creating a config file in PHP

The options I see with relative merits / weaknesses are:

File based mechanisms

These require that your code look in specific locations to find the ini file. This is a difficult problem to solve and one which always crops up in large PHP applications. However you will likely need to solve the problem in order to find the PHP code which gets incorporated / re-used at runtime.

Common approaches to this are to always use relative directories, or to search from the current directory upwards to find a file exclusively named in the base directory of the application.

Common file formats used for config files are PHP code, ini formatted files, JSON, XML, YAML and serialized PHP

PHP code

This provides a huge amount of flexibility for representing different data structures, and (assuming it is processed via include or require) the parsed code will be available from the opcode cache - giving a performance benefit.

The include_path provides a means for abstracting the potential locations of the file without relying on additional code.

On the other hand, one of the main reasons for separating configuration from code is to separate responsibilities. It provides a route for injecting additional code into the runtime.

If the configuration is created from a tool, it may be possible to validate the data in the tool, but there is no standard function to escape data for embedding into PHP code as exists for HTML, URLs, MySQL statements, shell commands....

Serialized data This is relatively efficient for small amounts of configuration (up to around 200 items) and allows for use of any PHP data structure. It requires very little code to create/parse the data file (so you can instead expend your efforts on ensuring that the file is only written with appropriate authorization).

Escaping of content written to the file is handled automatically.

Since you can serialize objects, it does create an opportunity for invoking code simply by reading the configuration file (the __wakeup magic method).

Structured file

Storing it as a INI file as suggested by Marcel or JSON or XML also provides a simple api to map the file into a PHP data structure (and with the exception of XML, to escape the data and create the file) while eliminating the code invocation vulnerability using serialized PHP data.

It will have similar performance characteristics to the serialized data.

Database storage

This is best considered where you have a huge amount of configuration but are selective in what is needed for the current task - I was surprised to find that at around 150 data items, it was quicker to retrieve the data from a local MySQL instance than to unserialize a datafile.

OTOH its not a good place to store the credentials you use to connect to your database!

The execution environment

You can set values in the execution environment PHP is running in.

This removes any requirement for the PHP code to look in a specific place for the config. OTOH it does not scale well to large amounts of data and is difficult to change universally at runtime.

On the client

One place I've not mentioned for storing configuration data is at the client. Again the network overhead means that this does not scale well to large amounts of configuration. And since the end user has control over the data it must be stored in a format where any tampering is detectable (i.e. with a cryptographic signature) and should not contain any information which is compromised by its disclosure (i.e. reversibly encrypted).

Conversely, this has a lot of benefits for storing sensitive information which is owned by the end user - if you are not storing this on the server, it cannot be stolen from there.

Network Directories Another interesting place to store configuration information is in DNS / LDAP. This will work for a small number of small pieces of information - but you don't need to stick to 1st normal form - consider, for example SPF.

The infrastucture supports caching, replication and distribution. Hence it works well for very large infrastructures.

Version Control systems

Configuration, like code should be managed and version controlled - hence getting the configuration directly from your VC system is a viable solution. But often this comes with a significant performance overhead hence caching may be advisable.

What you seem to be thinking is that most of the processing is handled in the node event loop. Node actually farms off the I/O work to threads. I/O operations typically take orders of magnitude longer than CPU operations so why have the CPU wait for that? Besides, the OS can handle I/O tasks very well already. In fact, because Node does not wait around it achieves much higher CPU utilisation.

By way of analogy, think of NodeJS as a waiter taking the customer orders while the I/O chefs prepare them in the kitchen. Other systems have multiple chefs, who take a customers order, prepare the meal, clear the table and only then attend to the next customer.

Who do you trust?

I've always considered this area too critical to trust a third party to manage the runtime security of your application. Once that component is cracked for one application, it's cracked for all applications. It happened to Discreet in five minutes once they went with a third-party license solution for 3ds Max years ago... Good times!

Seriously, consider rolling your own for having complete control over your algorithm. If you do, consider using components in your key along the lines of:

License Name - the name of client (if any) you're licensing. Useful for managing company deployments - make them feel special to have a "personalised" name in the license information you supply them.
Date of license expiry
Number of users to run under the same license. This assumes you have a way of tracking running instances across a site, in a server-ish way
Feature codes - to let you use the same licensing system across multiple features, and across multiple products. Of course if it's cracked for one product it's cracked for all.

Then checksum the hell out of them and add whatever (reversable) encryption you want to it to make it harder to crack.

To make a trial license key, simply have set values for the above values that translate as "trial mode".

And since this is now probably the most important code in your application/company, on top of/instead of obfuscation consider putting the decrypt routines in a native DLL file and simply P/Invoke to it.

Several companies I've worked for have adopted generalised approaches for this with great success. Or maybe the products weren't worth cracking ;)

Two things occur to me.

First, are you sure you mean ManyToOne for address? That means multiple people will have the same address. If it's edited for one of them, it'll be edited for all of them. Is that your intent? 99% of the time addresses are "private" (in the sense that they belong to only one person).

Secondly, do you have any other eager relationships on the Person entity? If I recall correctly, Hibernate can only handle one eager relationship on an entity but that is possibly outdated information.

How do HashTables deal with collisions?

Update since Java 8: Java 8 uses a self-balanced tree for collision-handling, improving the worst case from O(n) to O(log n) for lookup. The use of a self-balanced tree was introduced in Java 8 as an improvement over chaining (used until java 7), which uses a linked-list, and has a worst case of O(n) for lookup (as it needs to traverse the list)

To answer the second part of your question, insertion is done by mapping a given element to a given index in the underlying array of the hashmap, however, when a collision occurs, all elements must still be preserved (stored in a secondary data-structure, and not just replaced in the underlying array). This is usually done by making each array-component (slot) be a secondary datastructure (aka bucket), and the element is added to the bucket residing on the given array-index (if the key does not already exist in the bucket, in which case it is replaced).

During lookup, the key is hashed to it's corresponding array-index, and search is performed for an element matching the (exact) key in the given bucket. Because the bucket does not need to handle collisions (compares keys directly), this solves the problem of collisions, but does so at the cost of having to perform insertion and lookup on the secondary datastructure. The key point is that in a hashmap, both the key and the value is stored, and so even if the hash collides, keys are compared directly for equality (in the bucket), and thus can be uniquely identified in the bucket.

Collission-handling brings the worst-case performance of insertion and lookup from O(1) in the case of no collission-handling to O(n) for chaining (a linked-list is used as secondary datastructure) and O(log n) for self-balanced tree.

First off, if you want to extract count features and apply TF-IDF normalization and row-wise euclidean normalization you can do it in one operation with TfidfVectorizer:

As explained by Chris Clark in comments and here Cosine Similarity does not take into account the magnitude of the vectors. Row-normalised have a magnitude of 1 and so the Linear Kernel is sufficient to calculate the similarity values.

The scipy sparse matrix API is a bit weird (not as flexible as dense N-dimensional numpy arrays). To get the first vector you need to slice the matrix row-wise to get a submatrix with a single row:

Bricklins were manufactured in the 70s with engines from Ford. They are rather
odd looking with the encased front bumper. There aren't a lot of them around,
but Hemmings (Motor News) ususally has ten or so listed. Basically, they are a
performance Ford with new styling slapped on top.

I want to start by saying by saying that I realize this question is old and already has an accepted answer; but, as an unfortunate internet user that used this question as a means to end only to be proven wrong shortly after (but not before I upset my client a little) I want to add my thoughts and suggestions.

While @DSG and @Giona are correct, and there is nothing wrong with their answers, there is a creative mechanism you can employ to "get around," so to speak, this limitation. That is not say that I'm condoning circumvention of this feature, quite the contrary, but just some mechanisms so that a user still "feels" as if a video or audio file is "auto playing."

The quick work around is hide a video tag somewhere on the mobile page, since I built a responsive site I only do this for smaller screens. The video tag (HTML and jQuery examples):

With that hidden on the page, when a user "clicks" to watch a movie (still user interaction, there is no way to get around that requirement) instead of navigating to a secondary watch page I load the hidden video. This mainly works because the media tag isn't really used but instead promoted to a Quicktime instance so having a visible video element isn't necessary at all. In the handler for "click" (or "touchend" on mobile).

And viola. As far as UX goes, a user clicks on a video to play and Quicktime opens playing the video they chose. This remains within the limitation that videos can only be played via user action so I'm not forcing data on anyone who isn't deciding to watch a video with this service. I discovered this when trying to figure out how exactly Youtube pulled this off with their mobile which is essentially some really nice Javascript page building and fancy element hiding like in the case of the video tag.

tl;dr Here is a somewhat "workaround" to try and create an "autoplay" UX feature on iOS devices without going above and beyond Apple's limitations and still having users decide if they want to watch a video (or audio most likey, though I've not tested) themselves without having one just loaded without their permission.

Also, to the person who commented that is from sleep.fm, this still unfortunately would not have been a solution to your issues which is time based audio play back.

I hope someone finds this information useful, it would have saved me a week of bad news delivery to a client that was adamant that they have this feature and I was glad to find a way to deliver it in the end.

Further finding indicate the above workaround is for iPhone/iPod devices only. The iPad plays video in Safari before it's been full screened so you'll need some mechanism to resize the video on click before playing or else you'll end up with audio and no video.

I'm assuming that when you say 'click the button, it moves to the top a little' you're talking about the mouse down click state for the button, and that when you release the mouse click, it returns to its normal state? And that you're disabling the default rendering of the button by using:

Change private static final field using Java reflection

If the value assigned to a static final boolean field is known at compile-time, it is a constant. Fields of primitive or String type can be compile-time constants. A constant will be inlined in any code that references the field. Since the field is not actually read at runtime, changing it then will have no effect.

The Java language specification says this:

If a field is a constant variable (§4.12.4), then deleting the keyword final or changing its value will not break compatibility with pre-existing binaries by causing them not to run, but they will not see any new value for the usage of the field unless they are recompiled. This is true even if the usage itself is not a compile-time constant expression (§15.28)

Create Local SQL Server database

You need to install a so-called Instance of MSSQL server on your computer. That is, installing all the needed files and services and database files. By default, there should be no MSSQL Server installed on your machine, assuming that you use a desktop Windows (7,8,10...).

You can start off with Microsoft SQL Server Express, which is a 10GB-limited, free version of MSSQL. It also lacks some other features (Server Agents, AFAIR), but it's good for some experiments.

Download it from the Microsoft Website and go through the installer process by choosing New SQL Server stand-alone installation .. after running the installer.

Click through the steps. For your scenario (it sounds like you mainly want to test some stuff), the default options should suffice.

Just give attention to the step Instance Configuration. There you will set the name of your MSSQL Server Instance. Call it something unique/descriptive like MY_TEST_INSTANCE or the like. Also, choose wisely the Instance root directory. In it, the database files will be placed, so it should be on a drive that has enough space.

Click further through the wizard, and when it's finished, your MSSQL instance will be up and running. It will also run at every boot if you have chosen the default settings for the services.

As soon as it's running in the background, you can connect to it with Management Studio by connecting to .\MY_TEST_INSTANCE, given that that's the name you chose for the instance.
