How can I change the width and height of slides on Slick Carousel?

I found good solution myself. Since slick slider is still used nowadays i'll post my approach.

@RuivBoas answer is partly correct. - It can change the width of the slide but it can break the slider. Why?

Slick slider may exceed browser width. Actual container width is set to value that can accomodate all it's slides.

The best solution for setting slide width is to use width of the actual browser window. It works best with responsive design.

A variable, able to store or represent "1.9" provides less precision than the one able to hold or represent 1.9999. These Fraction can amount to a huge difference in large calculations.

Get refresh token google api

Hi I followed following steps and I had been able to get the refresh token.

Authorization flow has two steps.

  1. Is to obtain the authorization code using https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth? URL.

    For that a post request is sent providing following parameters. 'scope=' + SCOPE + '&client_id=' + CLIENTID + '&redirect_uri=' + REDIRECT + '&response_type=' + TYPE + '&access_type=offline' Providing above will receive a authorization code.

  2. Retrieving AcessToken and RefreshToken using https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/token? URL. For that a post request is sent providing following parameters.

    "code" : code, "client_id" : CID, "client_secret" : CSECRET, "redirect_uri" : REDIRECT, "grant_type" : "authorization_code",

So in your first attempt once you authorize the permissions you will be able to get the Refresh token. Subsequent attempts will not provide the refresh token. If you want the token again the revoke the access in you application.

How to sort a Pandas DataFrame by index?

Dataframes have a sort_index method which returns a copy by default. Pass inplace=True to operate in place.

For using (now deprecated) FusedLocationProviderApi:

If your project uses Google Play Services 10 or lower, using the FusedLocationProviderApi is the optimal choice.

The FusedLocationProviderApi offers less battery drain than the old open source LocationManager API. Also, if you're already using Google Play Services for Google Maps, there's no reason not to use it.

Here is a full Activity class that places a Marker at the current location, and also moves the camera to the current position.

It also checks for the Location permission at runtime for Android 6 and later (Marshmallow, Nougat, Oreo). In order to properly handle the Location permission runtime check that is necessary on Android M/Android 6 and later, you need to ensure that the user has granted your app the Location permission before calling mGoogleMap.setMyLocationEnabled(true) and also before requesting location updates.

WCF named pipe minimal example

Check out my highly simplified Echo example: It is designed to use basic HTTP communication, but it can easily be modified to use named pipes by editing the app.config files for the client and server. Make the following changes:

Edit the server's app.config file, removing or commenting out the http baseAddress entry and adding a new baseAddress entry for the named pipe (called net.pipe). Also, if you don't intend on using HTTP for a communication protocol, make sure the serviceMetadata and serviceDebug is either commented out or deleted:

The above example will only run with named pipes, but nothing is stopping you from using multiple protocols to run your service. AFAIK, you should be able to have a server run a service using both named pipes and HTTP (as well as other protocols).

Also, the binding in the client's app.config file is highly simplified. There are many different parameters you can adjust, aside from just specifying the baseAddress...

Smart way to truncate long strings

Sometimes file names are numbered, where the index may be at the beginning or the end. So I wanted to shorten from the center of the string:

How to call shell commands from Ruby

Some things to think about when choosing between these mechanisms are:

  1. Do you just want stdout or do you need stderr as well? Or even separated out?
  2. How big is your output? Do you want to hold the entire result in memory?
  3. Do you want to read some of your output while the subprocess is still running?
  4. Do you need result codes?
  5. Do you need a Ruby object that represents the process and lets you kill it on demand?

You may need anything from simple backticks (``), system(), and IO.popen to full-blown Kernel.fork/Kernel.exec with IO.pipe and IO.select.

You may also want to throw timeouts into the mix if a sub-process takes too long to execute.

Unfortunately, it very much depends.

Powershell import-module doesn't find modules

The module needs to be placed in a folder with the same name as the module. In your case:

Since Twitter Bootstrap version 2.0 - which saw the removal of the .container-fluid class - it has not been possible to implement a two column fixed-fluid layout using just the bootstrap classes - however I have updated my answer to include some small CSS changes that can be made in your own CSS code that will make this possible

To ensure that the main content fills at least 100% of the screen height, we need to set the height of the html and body to 100% and create a new css class called .fill which has a minimum-height of 100%:

To ensure that the Sidebar and the Content columns have the same height is very difficult and unnecessary. Instead we can use the ::after pseudo selector to add a filler element that will give the illusion that the two columns have the same height:

A lot of good solutions and valuable commentaries by known experts from JS community on the topic could be found here. It could be an indicator that it's not that trivial problem as it may seem. I think this is why it could be the source of doubts and uncertainty on the issue.

Fundamental problem here is that in React you're only allowed to mount component to its parent, which is not always the desired behavior. But how to address this issue?

Rationale

react/react-dom comes comes with 2 basic assumptions/ideas:

  • every UI is hierarchical naturally. This why we have the idea of components which wrap each other
  • react-dom mounts (physically) child component to its parent DOM node by default

The problem is that sometimes the second property isn't what you want in your case. Sometimes you want to mount your component into different physical DOM node and hold logical connection between parent and child at the same time.

Canonical example is Tooltip-like component: at some point of development process you could find that you need to add some description for your UI element: it'll render in fixed layer and should know its coordinates (which are that UI element coord or mouse coords) and at the same time it needs information whether it needs to be shown right now or not, its content and some context from parent components. This example shows that sometimes logical hierarchy isn't match with the physical DOM hierarchy.

You can manually change the sidebar style by editing Default.sublime-theme.

To do this, edit the “sidebar_tree”, “sidebar_heading” etc., classes in Packages/Theme - Default/Default.sublime-theme. You can override those defaults by putting this Default.sublime-theme inside the Packages/User folder.

What causes the Broken Pipe Error?

It can take time for the network close to be observed - the total time is nominally about 2 minutes (yes, minutes!) after a close before the packets destined for the port are all assumed to be dead. The error condition is detected at some point. With a small write, you are inside the MTU of the system, so the message is queued for sending. With a big write, you are bigger than the MTU and the system spots the problem quicker. If you ignore the SIGPIPE signal, then the functions will return EPIPE error on a broken pipe - at some point when the broken-ness of the connection is detected.

Dynamically changing searches based on the given parameters is a complicated subject and doing it one way over another, even with only a very slight difference, can have massive performance implications. The key is to use an index, ignore compact code, ignore worrying about repeating code, you must make a good query execution plan (use an index).

Read this and consider all the methods. Your best method will depend on your parameters, your data, your schema, and your actual usage:

If you have the proper SQL Server 2008 version (SQL 2008 SP1 CU5 (10.0.2746) and later), you can use this little trick to actually use an index:

Add OPTION (RECOMPILE) onto your query, see Erland's article, and SQL Server will resolve the OR from within (@LastName IS NULL OR LastName= @LastName) before the query plan is created based on the runtime values of the local variables, and an index can be used.

This will work for any SQL Server version (return proper results), but only include the OPTION(RECOMPILE) if you are on SQL 2008 SP1 CU5 (10.0.2746) and later. The OPTION(RECOMPILE) will recompile your query, only the verison listed will recompile it based on the current run time values of the local variables, which will give you the best performance. If not on that version of SQL Server 2008, just leave that line off.

Laravel: getting a a single value from a MySQL query

yet another edit: As of version 5.2 pluck is not deprecated anymore, it just got new behaviour (same as lists previously - see side-note below):

edit: As of version 5.1 pluck is deprecated, so start using value instead:

Then, with L5.1 pluck got deprecated and, instead, we got value method to replace it.

But to make it funny, pluck in fact was never gone. Instead it just got completely new behaviour and... deprecated lists method.. (L5.2) - that was caused by the inconsistency between Query Builder and Collection methods (in 5.1 pluck worked differently on the collection and query, that's the reason).

I just figured this out, at least in my use case.

I was getting ECONNRESET. It turned out that the way my client was set up, it was hitting the server with an API call a ton of times really quickly -- and it only needed to hit the endpoint once.

Using Transactions or SaveChanges(false) and AcceptAllChanges()?

With the Entity Framework most of the time SaveChanges() is sufficient. This creates a transaction, or enlists in any ambient transaction, and does all the necessary work in that transaction.

Sometimes though the SaveChanges(false) + AcceptAllChanges() pairing is useful.

The most useful place for this is in situations where you want to do a distributed transaction across two different Contexts.

I.e. something like this (bad):

If context1.SaveChanges() succeeds but context2.SaveChanges() fails the whole distributed transaction is aborted. But unfortunately the Entity Framework has already discarded the changes on context1, so you can't replay or effectively log the failure.

But if you change your code to look like this:

While the call to SaveChanges(false) sends the necessary commands to the database, the context itself is not changed, so you can do it again if necessary, or you can interrogate the ObjectStateManager if you want.

This means if the transaction actually throws an exception you can compensate, by either re-trying or logging state of each contexts ObjectStateManager somewhere.

nameContent only exists within the first() function, as you defined it within the first() function.

To make its scope broader, define it outside of the functions:

The problem is not the TNS file, in PLSQL Developer, if you don't have the oracle installation, you need to provide the location of the OCI.DLL file.

In PLSQL DEV app go to Tools-Preferences-Oracle/connections-OCI Library.

In my case I put the next address C:\Oracle\InstantClient-win32-11.2.0.1.0\oci.dll.

If have Weblogic app installed, I didnt tried but if you want try to put the next location

A slight deviation from the original question however may prove useful for future people landing here wanting to DROP and CREATE an index, i.e. in a deployment script.

You can bypass the exists check simply by adding the following to your create statement:

As @DSM points out, you can do this more directly using the vectorised string methods:

df['Date'].str[-4:].astype(int)

Or using extract (assuming there is only one set of digits of length 4 somewhere in each string):

df['Date'].str.extract('(?P<year>\d{4})').astype(int)

An alternative slightly more flexible way, might be to use apply (or equivalently map) to do this:

df['Date'] = df['Date'].apply(lambda x: int(str(x)[-4:]))
             #  converts the last 4 characters of the string to an integer

The lambda function, is taking the input from the Date and converting it to a year.
You could (and perhaps should) write this more verbosely as:

But when using

setImageViewBitmap(int viewId, Bitmap bitmap);

How do I get the serial key for Visual Studio Express?

The question is about VS 2008 Express.

Microsoft's web page for registering Visual Studio 2008 Express has been dead (404) for some time, so registering it is not possible.

Instead, as a workaround, you can temporarily remove the requirement to register VS2008Exp by deleting (or renaming) the registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/VCExpress/9.0/Registration

To ensure that this is working beforehand, click Help -> register product within VS2008.

You should see text like

"You have not yet registered your copy of Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. This product will run for 10 more days before you will be required to register it."

Close the application, delete that key, reopen, click help->register product.

The text should now say

"You have not yet registered your copy of Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition. This product will run for 30 more days before you will be required to register it."

So you have two options - delete that key manually every 30 days, or run it from a batch file that also contains a line like:

reg delete HKCU\Software\Microsoft\VCExpress\9.0\Registration /f

[Edit: User @i486 confirms on testing that this workaround works even after the expiration period has expired]

[Edit2: User @Wyatt8740 has a much more elegant way to prevent the value from reappearing.]

__future__ is a pseudo-module which programmers can use to enable new language features which are not compatible with the current interpreter. For example, the expression 11/4 currently evaluates to 2. If the module in which it is executed had enabled true division by executing:

the expression 11/4 would evaluate to 2.75. By importing the __future__ module and evaluating its variables, you can see when a new feature was first added to the language and when it will become the default:

Difference between attr_accessor and attr_accessible

attr_accessor is a Ruby method that makes a getter and a setter. attr_accessible is a Rails method that allows you to pass in values to a mass assignment: new(attrs) or update_attributes(attrs).

Here's a mass assignment:

Order.new({ :type => 'Corn', :quantity => 6 })

You can imagine that the order might also have a discount code, say :price_off. If you don't tag :price_off as attr_accessible you stop malicious code from being able to do like so:

Order.new({ :type => 'Corn', :quantity => 6, :price_off => 30 })

Even if your form doesn't have a field for :price_off, if it's in your model it's available by default. This means a crafted POST could still set it. Using attr_accessible white lists those things that can be mass assigned.

We can write a function to calculate (a % b) == a - (a / b) * b!

download your desired version of php binary from http://windows.php.net/download/ website. download Thread Safe binary zip version. Unzip the downloaded version of the PHP in a separate folder. Are "while(true)" loops so bad?

You might just use a Boolean flag to indicate when to end the while loop. Break and go to were reasons for software being to hard to maintain - the software-crisis(tm) - and should be avoided, and easily can be too.

It's a question if you are pragmatic or not. Pragmatic coders might just use break in that simple situation.

But it's good to get the habbit of not using them, else you might use them out of habbit in unsuitable situations, like in complicated nested loops where readability and maintainability of your code becomes harder by using break.

What is copy-on-write?

A good example is Git, which uses a strategy to store blobs. Why does it use hashes? Partly because these are easier to perform diffs on, but also because makes it simpler to optimise a COW strategy. You need to keep Part 1 and Part 2 in different files, otherwise you will get the same expire date everytime.

jQuery find events handlers registered with an object

jQuery is not letting you just simply access the events for a given element. You can access them using undocumented internal method

$._data(element, "events")

But it still won't give you all the events, to be precise won't show you events assigned with

$([selector|element]).on()

These events are stored inside document, so you can fetch them by browsing through

$._data(document, "events")

but that is hard work, as there are events for whole webpage.

Tom G above created function that filters document for only events of given element and merges output of both methods, but it had a flaw of duplicating events in the output (and effectively on the element's jQuery internal event list messing with your application). I fixed that flaw and you can find the code below. Just paste it into your dev console or into your app code and execute it when needed to get nice list of all events for given element.

What is important to notice, element is actually HTMLElement, not jQuery object.

Class method differences in Python: bound, unbound and static

In Python, there is a distinction between bound and unbound methods.

Basically, a call to a member function (like method_one), a bound function

a_test.method_one()

is translated to

Test.method_one(a_test)

i.e. a call to an unbound method. Because of that, a call to your version of method_two will fail with a TypeError

You can change the behavior of a method using a decorator

Java Command line arguments

As everyone else has said... the .equals method is what you need.

In the off chance you used something like:

if(argv[0] == "a")

then it does not work because == compares the location of the two objects (physical equality) rather than the contents (logical equality).

Since "a" from the command line and "a" in the source for your program are allocated in two different places the == cannot be used. You have to use the equals method which will check to see that both strings have the same characters.

Another note... "a" == "a" will work in many cases, because Strings are special in Java, but 99.99999999999999% of the time you want to use .equals.

Honestly this is bad advice from npm. An installation can run arbitrary scripts and running it with sudo can be extremely dangerous! You could do sudo npm install -g less to install it globally, but instead I would recommend updating your npm settings:

Then you can update your path:

#~/.bashrc or ~/.zshrc, etc.
export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/.npm_modules/bin

Then you don't require root permissions to perform the installation and you can still use the binary.

This would only apply to your user, however. If you want the entire system to be able to use the module you would have to tell everyone to add your path. More complicated and robust solutions would include adding a folder with node modules / binaries that a group could install to and adding that to everyone's path.

I'm making a simple blog site for myself and I've got the code for the site and the javascript that can take the post I write in a textarea and display it immediately. I just want to link it to a PHP file that will create the permanent blog post on the server so that when I reload the page, the post is still there.

This is tricker.

First, you do need to use a form and POST (since you are sending data to be stored).

Then you need to store the data somewhere. This is normally done using a database. Read up on the PDO library for PHP. It is the standard way to interact with databases.

Then you need to pull the data back out again. The simplest approach here is to use the query string to pass the primary key for the database row with the entry you wish to display.

PostgreSQL: Resetting password of PostgreSQL on Ubuntu

Assuming you're the administrator of the machine, Ubuntu has granted you the right to sudo to run any command as any user.
Also assuming you did not restrict the rights in the pg_hba.conf file (in the /etc/postgresql/9.1/main directory), it should contain this line as the first rule:

# Database administrative login by Unix domain socket  
local   all             postgres                                peer

(About the file location: 9.1 is the major postgres version and main the name of your "cluster". It will differ if using a newer version of postgres or non-default names. Use the pg_lsclusters command to obtain this information for your version/system).

Anyway, if the pg_hba.conf file does not have that line, edit the file, add it, and reload the service with sudo service postgresql reload.

Then you should be able to log in with psql as the postgres superuser with this shell command:

sudo -u postgres psql

Once inside psql, issue the SQL command:

ALTER USER postgres PASSWORD 'newpassword';

You can use a byte literal in Java... sort of.

    byte f = 0;
    f = 0xa;

0xa (int literal) gets automatically cast to byte. It's not a real byte literal (see JLS & comments below), but if it quacks like a duck, I call it a duck.

What you can't do is this:

 foo( 0xa ); // will not compile

You have to cast as follows:

 foo( (byte) 0xa );

Error: Generic Array Creation

Besides the way suggested in the "possible duplicate", the other main way of getting around this problem is for the array itself (or at least a template of one) to be supplied by the caller, who will hopefully know the concrete type and can thus safely create the array.

This is the way methods like ArrayList.toArray(T[]) are implemented. I'd suggest you take a look at that method for inspiration. Better yet, you should probably be using that method anyway as others have noted.

Grep to find item in Perl array

The first arg that you give to grep needs to evaluate as true or false to indicate whether there was a match. So it should be:

Normal arguments vs. keyword arguments

Using keyword arguments is the same thing as normal arguments except order doesn't matter. For example the two functions calls below are the same:

The error comes up when you are trying to assign a list of numpy array of different length to a data frame, and it can be reproduced as follows:

A data frame of four rows:

Now trying to assign a list/array of two elements to it:

df['B'] = [3,4]   # or df['B'] = np.array([3,4])

Both errors out:

ValueError: Length of values does not match length of index

Because the data frame has four rows but the list and array has only two elements.

Work around Solution (use with caution): convert the list/array to a pandas Series, and then when you do assignment, missing index in the Series will be filled with NaN:

Operand type clash: uniqueidentifier is incompatible with int

The reason is that the data doesn't match the datatype. I have come across the same issues that I forgot to make the fields match. Though my case is not same as yours, but it shows the similar error message.

The situation is that I copy a table, but accidently I misspell one field, so I change it using the ALTER after creating the database. And the order of fields in both table is not identical. so when I use the INSERT INTO TableName SELECT * FROM TableName, the result showed the similar errors: Operand type clash: datetime is incompatible with uniqueidentifier

Yes, your conclusion is correct. socket.recv is a blocking call.

socket.recv(1024) will read at most 1024 bytes, blocking if no data is waiting to be read. If you don't read all data, an other call to socket.recv won't block.

socket.recv will also end with an empty string if the connection is closed or there is an error.

If you want a non-blocking socket, you can use the select module (a bit more complicated than just using sockets) or you can use socket.setblocking.

I had issues with socket.setblocking in the past, but feel free to try it if you want.

You may wish to use \x first if it's a wide table, for readability.

For long data:

or similar.

For wide data (big rows), in the psql command line client, it's useful to use \x to show the rows in key/value form instead of tabulated, e.g.

Note that in all cases the semicolon at the end is important.

How can I write a regex which matches non greedy?

The other answers here presuppose that you have a regex engine which supports non-greedy matching, which is an extension introduced in Perl 5 and widely copied to other modern languages; but it is by no means ubiquitous.

Many older or more conservative languages and editors only support traditional regular expressions, which have no mechanism for controlling greediness of the repetition operator * - it always matches the longest possible string.

The trick then is to limit what it's allowed to match in the first place. Instead of .* you seem to be looking for

[^>]*

which still matches as many of something as possible; but the something is not just . "any character", but instead "any character which isn't >".

Depending on your application, you may or may not want to enable an option to permit "any character" to include newlines.

Even if your regular expression engine supports non-greedy matching, it's better to spell out what you actually mean. If this is what you mean, you should probably say this, instead of rely on non-greedy matching to (hopefully, probably) Do What I Mean.

For example, a regular expression with a trailing context after the wildcard like .*?><br/> will jump over any nested > until it finds the trailing context (here, ><br/>) even if that requires straddling multiple > instances and newlines if you let it, where [^>]*><br/> (or even [^\n>]*><br/> if you have to explicitly disallow newline) obviously can't and won't do that.

Of course, this is still not what you want if you need to cope with <img title="quoted string with > in it" src="other attributes"> and perhaps <img title="nested tags">, but at that point, you should finally give up on using regular expressions for this like we all told you in the first place.

Do sessions really violate RESTfulness?

Actually, RESTfulness only applies to RESOURCES, as indicated by a Universal Resource Identifier. So to even talk about things like headers, cookies, etc. in regards to REST is not really appropriate. REST can work over any protocol, even though it happens to be routinely done over HTTP.

The main determiner is this: if you send a REST call, which is a URI, then once the call makes it successfully to the server, does that URI return the same content, assuming no transitions have been performed (PUT, POST, DELETE)? This test would exclude errors or authentication requests being returned, because in that case, the request has not yet made it to the server, meaning the servlet or application that will return the document corresponding to the given URI.

Likewise, in the case of a POST or PUT, can you send a given URI/payload, and regardless of how many times you send the message, it will always update the same data, so that subsequent GETs will return a consistent result?

REST is about the application data, not about the low-level information required to get that data transferred about.

Going to the issue of authentication, whether it is accomplished through cookies or headers, as long as the information isn't part of the URI and POST payload, it really has nothing to do with REST at all. So, in regards to being stateless, we are talking about the application data only.

For example, as the user enters data into a GUI screen, the client is keeping track of what fields have been entered, which have not, any required fields that are missing etc. This is all CLIENT CONTEXT, and should not be sent or tracked by the server. What does get sent to the server is the complete set of fields that need to be modified in the IDENTIFIED resource (by the URI), such that a transition occurs in that resource from one RESTful state to another.

So, the client keeps track of what the user is doing, and only sends logically complete state transitions to the server.

How to set background image in Java?

The answer will vary slightly depending on whether the application or applet is using AWT or Swing.

(Basically, classes that start with J such as JApplet and JFrame are Swing, and Applet and Frame are AWT.)

In either case, the basic steps would be:

  1. Draw or load an image into a Image object.
  2. Draw the background image in the painting event of the Component you want to draw the background in.

Step 1. Loading the image can be either by using the Toolkit class or by the ImageIO class.

The Toolkit.createImage method can be used to load an Image from a location specified in a String:
