MySQL Error 1264: out of range value for column

You are exceeding the length of int datatype. You can use UNSIGNED attribute to support that value.

SIGNED INT can support till 2147483647 and with UNSIGNED INT allows double than this. After this you still want to save data than use CHAR or VARCHAR with length 10

adding multiple entries to a HashMap at once in one statement

Maps have also had factory methods added in Java 9. For up to 10 entries Maps have overloaded constructors that take pairs of keys and values. For example we could build a map of various cities and their populations (according to google in October 2016) as follow:

Map<String, Integer> cities = Map.of("Brussels", 1_139000, "Cardiff", 341_000);

The var-args case for Map is a little bit harder, you need to have both keys and values, but in Java, methods can’t have two var-args parameters. So the general case is handled by taking a var-args method of Map.Entry<K, V> objects and adding a static entry() method that constructs them. For example:

Map<String, Integer> cities = Map.ofEntries(
    entry("Brussels", 1139000),
    entry("Cardiff", 341000)
);

Gradle: Could not determine java version from '11.0.2'

In my case the JAVA_HOME variable was set to /usr/lib/jvm/jdk-11.0.2/. It was sufficient to unset the variable like this:

How to get the text of the selected value of a dropdown list?

You can use option:selected to get the chosen option of the select element, then the text() method:

Call to a member function fetch_assoc() on boolean in <path>

The query method can return false instead of a result set in case there is an error. That is why you get the error on the fetch_assoc method call, which obviously does not exist when $result is false.

This means you have an error in your SELECT statement. To get that error displayed, do this:

 $result = $conn->query($sql) or die($conn->error);

Most probably you have a wrong spelling for the table name or a column name. Maybe when moving to the host you did not create that table correctly, and made a spelling mistake there.

You should in fact see the same error when executing the same query via phpAdmin.

Also, replace this line:

while(($row = $result->fetch_assoc()) !== null){

with just:

while($row = $result->fetch_assoc()) {

You could also add this for debugging:

echo "number of rows: " . $result->num_rows;

Pass props in Link react-router

If you are just looking to replace the slugs in your routes, you can use generatePath that was introduced in react-router 4.3 (2018). As of today, it isn't included in the react-router-dom (web) documentation, but is in react-router (core). Issue#7679

// myRoutes.js
export const ROUTES = {
  userDetails: "/user/:id",
}

// MyRouter.jsx
import ROUTES from './routes'

<Route path={ROUTES.userDetails} ... />

// MyComponent.jsx
import { generatePath } from 'react-router-dom'
import ROUTES from './routes'

<Link to={generatePath(ROUTES.userDetails, { id: 1 })}>ClickyClick</Link>

It's the same concept that django.urls.reverse has had for a while.

How to see which flags -march=native will activate?

It should be (-### is similar to -v):

echo | gcc -### -E - -march=native

To show the "real" native flags for gcc.

You can make them appear more "clearly" with a command:

gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )//g'

and you can get rid of flags with -mno-* with:

gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )|( -mno-[^\ ]+)//g'

Android: why setVisibility(View.GONE); or setVisibility(View.INVISIBLE); do not work

I was also facing the same issue, if suppose that particular fragment is inflated across various screens, there is a chance that the visibility modes set inside the if statements to not function according to our needs as the condition might have been reset when it is inflated a number of times in our app.

In my case, I have to change the visibility mode in one fragment(child fragment) based on a button clicked in another fragment(parent fragment). So I stored the buttonClicked boolean value in a variable of parent fragment and passed it as a parameter to a function in the child fragment. So the visibility modes in the child fragments is changed based on that boolean value that is received via parameter. But as this child fragment is inflated across various screens, the visibility modes kept on resetting even if I make it hidden using View.GONE.

In order to avoid this conflict, I declared a static boolean variable in the child fragment and whenever that boolean value is received from the parent fragment I stored it in the static variable and then changed the visibility modes based on that static variable in the child fragment.

That solved the issue for me.

Spring - @Transactional - What happens in background?

This is a big topic. The Spring reference doc devotes multiple chapters to it. I recommend reading the ones on Aspect-Oriented Programming and Transactions, as Spring's declarative transaction support uses AOP at its foundation.

But at a very high level, Spring creates proxies for classes that declare @Transactional on the class itself or on members. The proxy is mostly invisible at runtime. It provides a way for Spring to inject behaviors before, after, or around method calls into the object being proxied. Transaction management is just one example of the behaviors that can be hooked in. Security checks are another. And you can provide your own, too, for things like logging. So when you annotate a method with @Transactional, Spring dynamically creates a proxy that implements the same interface(s) as the class you're annotating. And when clients make calls into your object, the calls are intercepted and the behaviors injected via the proxy mechanism.

Transactions in EJB work similarly, by the way.

As you observed, through, the proxy mechanism only works when calls come in from some external object. When you make an internal call within the object, you're really making a call through the "this" reference, which bypasses the proxy. There are ways of working around that problem, however. I explain one approach in this forum post in which I use a BeanFactoryPostProcessor to inject an instance of the proxy into "self-referencing" classes at runtime. I save this reference to a member variable called "me". Then if I need to make internal calls that require a change in the transaction status of the thread, I direct the call through the proxy (e.g. "me.someMethod()".) The forum post explains in more detail. Note that the BeanFactoryPostProcessor code would be a little different now, as it was written back in the Spring 1.x timeframe. But hopefully it gives you an idea. I have an updated version that I could probably make available.

Saving lists to txt file

Assuming your Generic List is of type String:

TextWriter tw = new StreamWriter("SavedList.txt");

foreach (String s in Lists.verbList)
   tw.WriteLine(s);

tw.Close();

Alternatively, with the using keyword:

using(TextWriter tw = new StreamWriter("SavedList.txt"))
{
   foreach (String s in Lists.verbList)
      tw.WriteLine(s);
}

Stacked Tabs in Bootstrap 3

The Bootstrap team seems to have removed it. See here: https://github.com/twbs/bootstrap/issues/8922 . @Skelly's answer involves custom css which I didn't want to do so I used the grid system and nav-pills. It worked fine and looked great. The code looks like so:

<div class="row">

  <!-- Navigation Buttons -->
  <div class="col-md-3">
    <ul class="nav nav-pills nav-stacked" id="myTabs">
      <li class="active"><a href="#home" data-toggle="pill">Home</a></li>
      <li><a href="#profile" data-toggle="pill">Profile</a></li>
      <li><a href="#messages" data-toggle="pill">Messages</a></li>
    </ul>
  </div>

  <!-- Content -->
  <div class="col-md-9">
    <div class="tab-content">
      <div class="tab-pane active" id="home">Home</div>
      <div class="tab-pane" id="profile">Profile</div>
      <div class="tab-pane" id="messages">Messages</div>
    </div>
  </div>

</div>

You can see this in action here: http://bootply.com/81948

[Update] @SeanK gives the option of not having to enable the nav-pills through Javascript and instead using data-toggle="pill". Check it out here: http://bootply.com/96067. Thanks Sean.

What are the dark corners of Vim your mom never told you about?

:! [command] executes an external command while you're in Vim.

But add a dot after the colon, :.! [command], and it'll dump the output of the command into your current window. That's : . !

For example:

:.! ls

I use this a lot for things like adding the current date into a document I'm typing:

:.! date

Get random item from array

array_rand()

Adding local .aar files to Gradle build using "flatDirs" is not working

Add below in app gradle file implementation project(path: ':project name')

How do I remove objects from an array in Java?

It depends on what you mean by "remove"? An array is a fixed size construct - you can't change the number of elements in it. So you can either a) create a new, shorter, array without the elements you don't want or b) assign the entries you don't want to something that indicates their 'empty' status; usually null if you are not working with primitives.

In the first case create a List from the array, remove the elements, and create a new array from the list. If performance is important iterate over the array assigning any elements that shouldn't be removed to a list, and then create a new array from the list. In the second case simply go through and assign null to the array entries.

Finding the Eclipse Version Number

There is a system property eclipse.buildId (for example, for Eclipse Luna, I have 4.4.1.M20140925-0400 as a value there).

I'm not sure in which version of Eclipse did this property become available.

Also, dive right in and explore all the available system properties -- there is quite a bit of information available under eclipse.*, os.* osgi.* and org.osgi.* namespaces.

UPDATE! After experimenting with different Eclipse versions, it seems that eclipse.buildId system property is not the way to go. For example, on Eclipse Luna 4.4.0, it gives the result of 4.4.2.M20150204-1700 which is obviously incorrect.

I suspect eclipse.buildId system property is set to the version of org.eclipse.platform plugin. Unfortunately, this does not (always) give the correct result. However, good news is that I have a solution with working code sample which I will outline in a separate answer.

How do a send an HTTPS request through a proxy in Java?

HTTPS proxy doesn't make sense because you can't terminate your HTTP connection at the proxy for security reasons. With your trust policy, it might work if the proxy server has a HTTPS port. Your error is caused by connecting to HTTP proxy port with HTTPS.

You can connect through a proxy using SSL tunneling (many people call that proxy) using proxy CONNECT command. However, Java doesn't support newer version of proxy tunneling. In that case, you need to handle the tunneling yourself. You can find sample code here,

http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/javatips/jw-javatip111.html

EDIT: If you want defeat all the security measures in JSSE, you still need your own TrustManager. Something like this,

 public SSLTunnelSocketFactory(String proxyhost, String proxyport){
      tunnelHost = proxyhost;
      tunnelPort = Integer.parseInt(proxyport);
      dfactory = (SSLSocketFactory)sslContext.getSocketFactory();
 }

 ...

 connection.setSSLSocketFactory( new SSLTunnelSocketFactory( proxyHost, proxyPort ) );
 connection.setDefaultHostnameVerifier( new HostnameVerifier()
 {
    public boolean verify( String arg0, SSLSession arg1 )
    {
        return true;
    }
 }  );

EDIT 2: I just tried my program I wrote a few years ago using SSLTunnelSocketFactory and it doesn't work either. Apparently, Sun introduced a new bug sometime in Java 5. See this bug report,

http://bugs.sun.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=6614957

The good news is that the SSL tunneling bug is fixed so you can just use the default factory. I just tried with a proxy and everything works as expected. See my code,

public class SSLContextTest {

    public static void main(String[] args) {

        System.setProperty("https.proxyHost", "proxy.xxx.com");
        System.setProperty("https.proxyPort", "8888");

        try {

            SSLContext sslContext = SSLContext.getInstance("SSL");

            // set up a TrustManager that trusts everything
            sslContext.init(null, new TrustManager[] { new X509TrustManager() {
                public X509Certificate[] getAcceptedIssuers() {
                    System.out.println("getAcceptedIssuers =============");
                    return null;
                }

                public void checkClientTrusted(X509Certificate[] certs,
                        String authType) {
                    System.out.println("checkClientTrusted =============");
                }

                public void checkServerTrusted(X509Certificate[] certs,
                        String authType) {
                    System.out.println("checkServerTrusted =============");
                }
            } }, new SecureRandom());

            HttpsURLConnection.setDefaultSSLSocketFactory(
                    sslContext.getSocketFactory());

            HttpsURLConnection
                    .setDefaultHostnameVerifier(new HostnameVerifier() {
                        public boolean verify(String arg0, SSLSession arg1) {
                            System.out.println("hostnameVerifier =============");
                            return true;
                        }
                    });

            URL url = new URL("https://www.verisign.net");
            URLConnection conn = url.openConnection();
            BufferedReader reader =
                new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(conn.getInputStream()));
            String line;
            while ((line = reader.readLine()) != null) {
                System.out.println(line);
            }
        } catch (Exception e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }
    }
}

This is what I get when I run the program,

checkServerTrusted =============
hostnameVerifier =============
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.1//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml11/DTD/xhtml11.dtd">
......

As you can see, both SSLContext and hostnameVerifier are getting called. HostnameVerifier is only involved when the hostname doesn't match the cert. I used "www.verisign.net" to trigger this.

Correct way of looping through C++ arrays

If you have a very short list of elements you would like to handle, you could use the std::initializer_list introduced in C++11 together with auto:

#include <iostream>

int main(int, char*[])
{
    for(const auto& ext : { ".slice", ".socket", ".service", ".target" })
        std::cout << "Handling *" << ext << " systemd files" << std::endl;

    return 0;
}

CSS: Set a background color which is 50% of the width of the window

Use on your image bg

Vertical split

background-size: 50% 100%

Horizontal split

background-size: 100% 50%

Example

.class {
   background-image: url("");
   background-color: #fff;
   background-repeat: no-repeat;
   background-size: 50% 100%;
}

Is there a way to access the "previous row" value in a SELECT statement?

Use the lag function:

SELECT value - lag(value) OVER (ORDER BY Id) FROM table

Sequences used for Ids can skip values, so Id-1 does not always work.

Stop a gif animation onload, on mouseover start the activation

found a working solution here: https://codepen.io/hoanghals/pen/dZrWLZ

    var containerElement = canvas.parentNode;
    containerElement.appendChild(controlElement);

jQuery - Uncaught RangeError: Maximum call stack size exceeded

Your calls are made recursively which pushes functions on to the stack infinitely that causes max call stack exceeded error due to recursive behavior. Instead try using setTimeout which is a callback.

Also based on your markup your selector is wrong. it should be #advisersDiv

Demo

function fadeIn() {
    $('#pulseDiv').find('div#advisersDiv').delay(400).addClass("pulse");
    setTimeout(fadeOut,1); //<-- Provide any delay here
};

function fadeOut() {
    $('#pulseDiv').find('div#advisersDiv').delay(400).removeClass("pulse");
    setTimeout(fadeIn,1);//<-- Provide any delay here
};
fadeIn();

jQuery $.ajax(), pass success data into separate function

You can use this keyword to access custom data, passed to $.ajax() function:

    $.ajax({
        // ... // --> put ajax configuration parameters here
        yourCustomData: {param1: 'any value', time: '1h24'}, // put your custom key/value pair here
        success: successHandler
    });

    function successHandler(data, textStatus, jqXHR) {
        alert(this.yourCustomData.param1);  // shows "any value"
        console.log(this.yourCustomData.time);
    }

Convert Enum to String

Enum.GetName(...)

This is the most elegant method that is meant for it.

var enumValueString = Enum.GetName(typeof (MyEnum), MyEnum.MyValue);

Although I don't see any issues with calling .ToString() as it is simply shorter.

var enumValueString = MyEnum.MyValue.ToString();

With new C# 6 syntax you can use:

nameof(MyEnum.MyValue)

Silent installation of a MSI package

You should be able to use the /quiet or /qn options with msiexec to perform a silent install.

MSI packages export public properties, which you can set with the PROPERTY=value syntax on the end of the msiexec parameters.

For example, this command installs a package with no UI and no reboot, with a log and two properties:

msiexec /i c:\path\to\package.msi /quiet /qn /norestart /log c:\path\to\install.log PROPERTY1=value1 PROPERTY2=value2

You can read the options for msiexec by just running it with no options from Start -> Run.

PHP foreach loop key value

You can access your array keys like so:

foreach ($array as $key => $value)

What do the makefile symbols $@ and $< mean?

The $@ and $< are special macros.

Where:

$< is the name of the first dependency.

Disable scrolling in all mobile devices

Setting position to relative does not work for me. It only works if I set the position of body to fixed:

document.body.style.position = "fixed";
document.body.style.overflowY = "hidden";
document.body.addEventListener('touchstart', function(e){ e.preventDefault()});

Magento: get a static block as html in a phtml file

This should work as tested.

<?php
$filter = new Mage_Widget_Model_Template_Filter();
$_widget = $filter->filter('{{widget type="cms/widget_page_link" template="cms/widget/link/link_block.phtml" page_id="2"}}');
echo $_widget;
?>

inherit from two classes in C#

Use composition:

class ClassC
{
    public ClassA A { get; set; }
    public ClassB B { get; set; }

    public C (ClassA  a, ClassB  b)
    {
        this.A = a;
        this.B = b;
    }
}

Then you can call C.A.DoA(). You also can change the properties to an interface or abstract class, like public InterfaceA A or public AbstractClassA A.

C# ASP.NET MVC Return to Previous Page

Here is just another option you couold apply for ASP NET MVC.

Normally you shoud use BaseController class for each Controller class.

So inside of it's constructor method do following.

public class BaseController : Controller
{
        public BaseController()
        {
            // get the previous url and store it with view model
            ViewBag.PreviousUrl = System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Request.UrlReferrer;
        }
}

And now in ANY view you can do like

<button class="btn btn-success mr-auto" onclick="  window.location.href = '@ViewBag.PreviousUrl'; " style="width:2.5em;"><i class="fa fa-angle-left"></i></button>

Enjoy!

Powershell: How can I stop errors from being displayed in a script?

You're way off track here.

You already have a nice, big error message. Why on Earth would you want to write code that checks $? explicitly after every single command? This is enormously cumbersome and error prone. The correct solution is stop checking $?.

Instead, use PowerShell's built in mechanism to blow up for you. You enable it by setting the error preference to the highest level:

$ErrorActionPreference = 'Stop'

I put this at the top of every single script I ever write, and now I don't have to check $?. This makes my code vastly simpler and more reliable.

If you run into situations where you really need to disable this behavior, you can either catch the error or pass a setting to a particular function using the common -ErrorAction. In your case, you probably want your process to stop on the first error, catch the error, and then log it.

Do note that this doesn't handle the case when external executables fail (exit code nonzero, conventionally), so you do still need to check $LASTEXITCODE if you invoke any. Despite this limitation, the setting still saves a lot of code and effort.

Additional reliability

You might also want to consider using strict mode:

Set-StrictMode -Version Latest

This prevents PowerShell from silently proceeding when you use a non-existent variable and in other weird situations. (See the -Version parameter for details about what it restricts.)

Combining these two settings makes PowerShell much more of fail-fast language, which makes programming in it vastly easier.

How to apply font anti-alias effects in CSS?

Works the best. If you want to use it sitewide, without having to add this syntax to every class or ID, add the following CSS to your css body:

body {
    -webkit-font-smoothing: antialiased;
    text-shadow: 1px 1px 1px rgba(0,0,0,0.004);
    background: url('./images/background.png');
    text-align: left;
    margin: auto;

}

Extract the first word of a string in a SQL Server query

Marc's answer got me most of the way to what I needed, but I had to go with patIndex rather than charIndex because sometimes characters other than spaces mark the ends of my data's words. Here I'm using '%[ /-]%' to look for space, slash, or dash.

Select race_id, race_description
    , Case patIndex ('%[ /-]%', LTrim (race_description))
        When 0 Then LTrim (race_description)
        Else substring (LTrim (race_description), 1, patIndex ('%[ /-]%', LTrim (race_description)) - 1)
    End race_abbreviation
from tbl_races

Results...

race_id  race_description           race_abbreviation
-------  -------------------------  -----------------
1        White                      White
2 Black or African American Black
3        Hispanic/Latino            Hispanic

Caveat: this is for a small data set (US federal race reporting categories); I don't know what would happen to performance when scaled up to huge numbers.

SQL Server: Is it possible to insert into two tables at the same time?

Before being able to do a multitable insert in Oracle, you could use a trick involving an insert into a view that had an INSTEAD OF trigger defined on it to perform the inserts. Can this be done in SQL Server?

How Do I Insert a Byte[] Into an SQL Server VARBINARY Column

You can do something like this, very simple and efficient solution: What i did was actually use a parameter instead of basic placeholder, created a SqlParameter object and used another existing execution method. For e.g in your scenario:

string sql = "INSERT INTO mssqltable (varbinarycolumn) VALUES (@img)";
SqlParameter param = new SqlParameter("img", arraytoinsert); //where img is your parameter name in the query
ExecuteStoreCommand(sql, param);

This should work like a charm, provided you have an open sql connection established.

How to make a div 100% height of the browser window

Try the following CSS:

html {
    min-height: 100%;
    margin: 0;
    padding: 0;
}

body {
    height: 100%;
}

#right {
    min-height: 100%;
}

Turn Pandas Multi-Index into column

This doesn't really apply to your case but could be helpful for others (like myself 5 minutes ago) to know. If one's multindex have the same name like this:

                         value
Trial        Trial
    1              0        13
                   1         3
                   2         4
    2              0       NaN
                   1        12
    3              0        34

df.reset_index(inplace=True) will fail, cause the columns that are created cannot have the same names.

So then you need to rename the multindex with df.index = df.index.set_names(['Trial', 'measurement']) to get:

                           value
Trial    measurement

    1              0        13
    1              1         3
    1              2         4
    2              0       NaN
    2              1        12
    3              0        34

And then df.reset_index(inplace=True) will work like a charm.

I encountered this problem after grouping by year and month on a datetime-column(not index) called live_date, which meant that both year and month were named live_date.

Using Helvetica Neue in a Website

They are taking a 'shotgun' approach to referencing the font. The browser will attempt to match each font name with any installed fonts on the user's machine (in the order they have been listed).

In your example "HelveticaNeue-Light" will be tried first, if this font variant is unavailable the browser will try "Helvetica Neue Light" and finally "Helvetica Neue".

As far as I'm aware "Helvetica Neue" isn't considered a 'web safe font', which means you won't be able to rely on it being installed for your entire user base. It is quite common to define "serif" or "sans-serif" as a final default position.

In order to use fonts which aren't 'web safe' you'll need to use a technique known as font embedding. Embedded fonts do not need to be installed on a user's computer, instead they are downloaded as part of the page. Be aware this increases the overall payload (just like an image does) and can have an impact on page load times.

A great resource for free fonts with open-source licenses is Google Fonts. (You should still check individual licenses before using them.) Each font has a download link with instructions on how to embed them in your website.

CSS: How can I set image size relative to parent height?

Original Answer:

If you are ready to opt for CSS3, you can use css3 translate property. Resize based on whatever is bigger. If your height is bigger and width is smaller than container, width will be stretch to 100% and height will be trimmed from both side. Same goes for larger width as well.

Your need, HTML:

<div class="img-wrap">
  <img src="http://lorempixel.com/300/160/nature/" />
</div>
<div class="img-wrap">
  <img src="http://lorempixel.com/300/200/nature/" />
</div>
<div class="img-wrap">
  <img src="http://lorempixel.com/200/300/nature/" />
</div>

And CSS:

.img-wrap {
  width: 200px;
  height: 150px;
  position: relative;
  display: inline-block;
  overflow: hidden;
  margin: 0;
}

div > img {
  display: block;
  position: absolute;
  top: 50%;
  left: 50%;
  min-height: 100%;
  min-width: 100%;
  transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
}

Voila! Working: http://jsfiddle.net/shekhardesigner/aYrhG/

Explanation

DIV is set to the relative position. This means all the child elements will get the starting coordinates (origins) from where this DIV starts.

The image is set as a BLOCK element, min-width/height both set to 100% means to resize the image no matter of its size to be the minimum of 100% of it's parent. min is the key. If by min-height, the image height exceeded the parent's height, no problem. It will look for if min-width and try to set the minimum height to be 100% of parents. Both goes vice-versa. This ensures there are no gaps around the div but image is always bit bigger and gets trimmed by overflow:hidden;

Now image, this is set to an absolute position with left:50% and top:50%. Means push the image 50% from the top and left making sure the origin is taken from DIV. Left/Top units are measured from the parent.

Magic moment:

transform: translate(-50%, -50%);

Now, this translate function of CSS3 transform property moves/repositions an element in question. This property deals with the applied element hence the values (x, y) OR (-50%, -50%) means to move the image negative left by 50% of image size and move to the negative top by 50% of image size.

Eg. if Image size was 200px × 150px, transform:translate(-50%, -50%) will calculated to translate(-100px, -75px). % unit helps when we have various size of image.

This is just a tricky way to figure out centroid of the image and the parent DIV and match them.

Apologies for taking too long to explain!

How to add noise (Gaussian/salt and pepper etc) to image in Python with OpenCV

I don't know is there any method in Python API.But you can use this simple code to add Salt-and-Pepper noise to an image.

import numpy as np
import random
import cv2

def sp_noise(image,prob):
    '''
    Add salt and pepper noise to image
    prob: Probability of the noise
    '''
    output = np.zeros(image.shape,np.uint8)
    thres = 1 - prob
    for i in range(image.shape[0]):
        for j in range(image.shape[1]):
            rdn = random.random()
            if rdn < prob:
                output[i][j] = 0
            elif rdn > thres:
                output[i][j] = 255
            else:
                output[i][j] = image[i][j]
    return output

image = cv2.imread('image.jpg',0) # Only for grayscale image
noise_img = sp_noise(image,0.05)
cv2.imwrite('sp_noise.jpg', noise_img)

Simplest way to restart service on a remote computer

I recommend the method given by doofledorfer.

If you really want to do it via a direct API call, then look at the OpenSCManager function. Below are sample functions to take a machine name and service, and stop or start them.

function ServiceStart(sMachine, sService : string) : boolean; //start service, return TRUE if successful
var schm, schs : SC_Handle;
    ss         : TServiceStatus;
    psTemp     : PChar;
    dwChkP     : DWord;
begin
  ss.dwCurrentState := 0;
  schm := OpenSCManager(PChar(sMachine),Nil,SC_MANAGER_CONNECT); //connect to the service control manager

  if(schm > 0)then begin // if successful...
    schs := OpenService( schm,PChar(sService),SERVICE_START or SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS); // open service handle, start and query status
    if(schs > 0)then begin     // if successful...
      psTemp := nil;
      if (StartService(schs,0,psTemp)) and (QueryServiceStatus(schs,ss)) then
        while(SERVICE_RUNNING <> ss.dwCurrentState)do begin
          dwChkP := ss.dwCheckPoint; //dwCheckPoint contains a value incremented periodically to report progress of a long operation. Store it.
          Sleep(ss.dwWaitHint); //Sleep for recommended time before checking status again
          if(not QueryServiceStatus(schs,ss))then
            break;  //couldn't check status
          if(ss.dwCheckPoint < dwChkP)then
            Break; //if QueryServiceStatus didn't work for some reason, avoid infinite loop
        end;  //while not running
      CloseServiceHandle(schs);
    end; //if able to get service handle
    CloseServiceHandle(schm);
  end; //if able to get svc mgr handle
  Result := SERVICE_RUNNING = ss.dwCurrentState; //if we were able to start it, return true
end;

function ServiceStop(sMachine, sService : string) : boolean; //stop service, return TRUE if successful
var schm, schs : SC_Handle;
    ss         : TServiceStatus;
    dwChkP     : DWord;
begin
  schm := OpenSCManager(PChar(sMachine),nil,SC_MANAGER_CONNECT);

  if(schm > 0)then begin
    schs := OpenService(schm,PChar(sService),SERVICE_STOP or SERVICE_QUERY_STATUS);
    if(schs > 0)then begin
      if (ControlService(schs,SERVICE_CONTROL_STOP,ss)) and (QueryServiceStatus(schs,ss)) then
        while(SERVICE_STOPPED <> ss.dwCurrentState) do begin
          dwChkP := ss.dwCheckPoint;
          Sleep(ss.dwWaitHint);
          if(not QueryServiceStatus(schs,ss))then
            Break;

          if(ss.dwCheckPoint < dwChkP)then

How can I add a help method to a shell script?

For a quick single option solution, use if

If you only have a single option to check and it will always be the first option ($1) then the simplest solution is an if with a test ([). For example:

if [ "$1" == "-h" ] ; then
    echo "Usage: `basename $0` [-h]"
    exit 0
fi

Note that for posix compatibility = will work as well as ==.

Why quote $1?

The reason the $1 needs to be enclosed in quotes is that if there is no $1 then the shell will try to run if [ == "-h" ] and fail because == has only been given a single argument when it was expecting two:

$ [ == "-h" ]
bash: [: ==: unary operator expected

For anything more complex use getopt or getopts

As suggested by others, if you have more than a single simple option, or need your option to accept an argument, then you should definitely go for the extra complexity of using getopts.

As a quick reference, I like The 60 second getopts tutorial.

You may also want to consider the getopt program instead of the built in shell getopts. It allows the use of long options, and options after non option arguments (e.g. foo a b c --verbose rather than just foo -v a b c). This Stackoverflow answer explains how to use GNU getopt.

XPath Query: get attribute href from a tag

The answer shared by @mockinterface is correct. Although I would like to add my 2 cents to it.

If someone is using frameworks like scrapy the you will have to use /html/body//a[contains(@href,'com')][2]/@href along with get() like this:

response.xpath('//a[contains(@href,'com')][2]/@href').get()

Using async/await with a forEach loop

Instead of Promise.all in conjunction with Array.prototype.map (which does not guarantee the order in which the Promises are resolved), I use Array.prototype.reduce, starting with a resolved Promise:

async function printFiles () {
  const files = await getFilePaths();

  await files.reduce(async (promise, file) => {
    // This line will wait for the last async function to finish.
    // The first iteration uses an already resolved Promise
    // so, it will immediately continue.
    await promise;
    const contents = await fs.readFile(file, 'utf8');
    console.log(contents);
  }, Promise.resolve());
}

How to use "raise" keyword in Python

It has 2 purposes.

yentup has given the first one.

It's used for raising your own errors.

if something:
    raise Exception('My error!')

The second is to reraise the current exception in an exception handler, so that it can be handled further up the call stack.

try:
  generate_exception()
except SomeException as e:
  if not can_handle(e):
    raise
  handle_exception(e)

The above responses are the better, but just for completeness, when you are in a component you can access the history object inside the VueRouter with: this.$router.history. That means we can listen to changes with:

this.$router.listen((newLocation) =>{console.log(newLocation);})

I think this is mainly useful when used along with this.$router.currentRoute.path You can check what I am talking about placing a debugger

How can I format bytes a cell in Excel as KB, MB, GB etc?

For the exact result, I'd rather calculate it, but using display format.

Assuming A1 cell has value 29773945664927.

  1. Count the number of commas in B1 cell.

    =QUOTIENT(LEN(A1)-1,3)

  2. Divide the value by 1024^B1 in C1 cell.

    =A1/1024^B1

  3. Display unit in D1 cell.

    =SWITCH(B1, 5," PB", 4," TB", 3," GB", 2," MB",1," KB",0," B")

  4. Hide B1 cell.

How can I initialize a MySQL database with schema in a Docker container?

I've tried Greg's answer with zero success, I must have done something wrong since my database had no data after all the steps: I was using MariaDB's latest image, just in case.

Then I decided to read the entrypoint for the official MariaDB image, and used that to generate a simple docker-compose file:

database:
  image: mariadb
  ports:
     - 3306:3306
  expose:
     - 3306
  volumes:
     - ./docker/mariadb/data:/var/lib/mysql:rw
     - ./database/schema.sql:/docker-entrypoint-initdb.d/schema.sql:ro
  environment:
     MYSQL_ALLOW_EMPTY_PASSWORD: "yes"

Now I'm able to persist my data AND generate a database with my own schema!

Vagrant error : Failed to mount folders in Linux guest

In my case on a previously working Ubuntu 16.04 image, the error started after installing vagrant-vbguest for a different vagrant image, and then starting the Ubuntu VM. It upgraded the guest additions to 5.1.20, and since then the mounts started failing. Updated the box, apt update + upgrade and the same, vbguest would install the newer 5.1.20 version.

It was solved by manually running:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install virtualbox-guest-dkms

And also disabling the: config.vbguest.auto_update = false for this VM (might not be necessary).

in angularjs how to access the element that triggered the event?

I'm not sure which version you had, but this question was asked for long time ago. Currently with Angular 1.5, I can use the ng-keypress event and debounce function from Lodash to emulate similar behavior like ng-change, so I can capture the $event

<input type="text" ng-keypress="edit($event)" ng-model="myModel">

$scope.edit = _.debounce(function ($event) { console.log("$event", $event) }, 800)

Try using an absolute path for the filename. And if you are using Windows, use getlasterror() to see the actual error message.

Wait until page is loaded with Selenium WebDriver for Python

You can do that very simple by this function:

def page_is_loading(driver):
    while True:
        x = driver.execute_script("return document.readyState")
        if x == "complete":
            return True
        else:
            yield False

How to replace local branch with remote branch entirely in Git?

The ugly but simpler way: delete your local folder, and clone the remote repository again.

React this.setState is not a function

Here THIS context is getting changed. Use arrow function to keep context of React class.

        VK.init(() => {
            console.info("API initialisation successful");
            VK.api('users.get',{fields: 'photo_50'},(data) => {
                if(data.response){
                    this.setState({ //the error happens here
                        FirstName: data.response[0].first_name
                    });
                    console.info(this.state.FirstName);

How do you rotate a two dimensional array?

As I said in my previous post, here's some code in C# that implements an O(1) matrix rotation for any size matrix. For brevity and readability there's no error checking or range checking. The code:

static void Main (string [] args)
{
  int [,]
    //  create an arbitrary matrix
    m = {{0, 1}, {2, 3}, {4, 5}};

  Matrix
    // create wrappers for the data
    m1 = new Matrix (m),
    m2 = new Matrix (m),
    m3 = new Matrix (m);

  // rotate the matricies in various ways - all are O(1)
  m1.RotateClockwise90 ();
  m2.Rotate180 ();
  m3.RotateAnitclockwise90 ();

  // output the result of transforms
  System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine (m1.ToString ());
  System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine (m2.ToString ());
  System.Diagnostics.Trace.WriteLine (m3.ToString ());
}

class Matrix
{
  enum Rotation
  {
    None,
    Clockwise90,
    Clockwise180,
    Clockwise270
  }

  public Matrix (int [,] matrix)
  {
    m_matrix = matrix;
    m_rotation = Rotation.None;
  }

  //  the transformation routines
  public void RotateClockwise90 ()
  {
    m_rotation = (Rotation) (((int) m_rotation + 1) & 3);
  }

  public void Rotate180 ()
  {
    m_rotation = (Rotation) (((int) m_rotation + 2) & 3);
  }

  public void RotateAnitclockwise90 ()
  {
    m_rotation = (Rotation) (((int) m_rotation + 3) & 3);
  }

  // accessor property to make class look like a two dimensional array
  public int this [int row, int column]
  {
    get
    {
      int
        value = 0;

      switch (m_rotation)
      {
      case Rotation.None:
        value = m_matrix [row, column];
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise90:
        value = m_matrix [m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0) - column, row];
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise180:
        value = m_matrix [m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0) - row, m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1) - column];
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise270:
        value = m_matrix [column, m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1) - row];
        break;
      }

      return value;
    }

    set
    {
      switch (m_rotation)
      {
      case Rotation.None:
        m_matrix [row, column] = value;
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise90:
        m_matrix [m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0) - column, row] = value;
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise180:
        m_matrix [m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0) - row, m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1) - column] = value;
        break;

      case Rotation.Clockwise270:
        m_matrix [column, m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1) - row] = value;
        break;
      }
    }
  }

  // creates a string with the matrix values
  public override string ToString ()
  {
    int
      num_rows = 0,
      num_columns = 0;

    switch (m_rotation)
    {
    case Rotation.None:
    case Rotation.Clockwise180:
      num_rows = m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0);
      num_columns = m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1);
      break;

    case Rotation.Clockwise90:
    case Rotation.Clockwise270:
      num_rows = m_matrix.GetUpperBound (1);
      num_columns = m_matrix.GetUpperBound (0);
      break;
    }

    StringBuilder
      output = new StringBuilder ();

    output.Append ("{");

    for (int row = 0 ; row <= num_rows ; ++row)
    {
      if (row != 0)
      {
        output.Append (", ");
      }

      output.Append ("{");

      for (int column = 0 ; column <= num_columns ; ++column)
      {
        if (column != 0)
        {
          output.Append (", ");
        }

        output.Append (this [row, column].ToString ());
      }

      output.Append ("}");
    }

    output.Append ("}");

    return output.ToString ();
  }

  int [,]
    //  the original matrix
    m_matrix;

  Rotation
    // the current view of the matrix
    m_rotation;
}

OK, I'll put my hand up, it doesn't actually do any modifications to the original array when rotating. But, in an OO system that doesn't matter as long as the object looks like it's been rotated to the clients of the class. At the moment, the Matrix class uses references to the original array data so changing any value of m1 will also change m2 and m3. A small change to the constructor to create a new array and copy the values to it will sort that out.

Why is my toFixed() function not working?

I tried function toFixed(2) many times. Every time console shows "toFixed() is not a function".

but how I resolved is By using Math.round()

eg:

if ($(this).attr('name') == 'time') {
    var value = parseFloat($(this).val());
    value = Math.round(value*100)/100; // 10 defines 1 decimals, 100 for 2, 1000 for 3
    alert(value);
}

this thing surely works for me and it might help you guys too...

Why is Visual Studio 2013 very slow?

Visual Studio 2013 has a package server running, and it was spending up to 2 million K of memory.

I put it to low priority and affinity with only one CPU, and Visual Studio ran much more smoothly.

Tensorflow image reading & display

Just to give a complete answer:

filename_queue = tf.train.string_input_producer(['/Users/HANEL/Desktop/tf.png']) #  list of files to read

reader = tf.WholeFileReader()
key, value = reader.read(filename_queue)

my_img = tf.image.decode_png(value) # use png or jpg decoder based on your files.

init_op = tf.global_variables_initializer()
with tf.Session() as sess:
  sess.run(init_op)

  # Start populating the filename queue.

  coord = tf.train.Coordinator()
  threads = tf.train.start_queue_runners(coord=coord)

  for i in range(1): #length of your filename list
    image = my_img.eval() #here is your image Tensor :)

  print(image.shape)
  Image.fromarray(np.asarray(image)).show()

  coord.request_stop()
  coord.join(threads)

Or if you have a directory of images you can add them all via this Github source file

Large WCF web service request failing with (400) HTTP Bad Request

It might be useful to debug the client, turn off Tools\Options\Debugging\General\'Enable Just My Code', click Debug\Exceptions\'catch all first-chance exceptions' for managed CLR exceptions, and see if there is an exception under-the-hood on the client before the protocol exception and before the message hits the wire. (My guess would be some kind of serialization failure.)

What is the difference between HTML tags and elements?

This visualization can help us to find out difference between concept of element and tag (each indent means contain):

- element

        - content:

            - text

            - other elements

            - or empty

        - and its markup

            - tags (start or end tag)

                - element name

                - angle brackets < >

                - or attributes (just for start tag)

                - or slash /

Converting file into Base64String and back again

For Java, consider using Apache Commons FileUtils:

public String fileToBase64(File file) throws IOException {
    final byte[] bytes = FileUtils.readFileToByteArray(file);
    return Base64.getEncoder().encodeToString(bytes);
}

/**
 * Convert base64 string representation to a file

public void base64ToFile(String base64String, String filePath) throws IOException {
    byte[] bytes = Base64.getDecoder().decode(base64String);
    FileUtils.writeByteArrayToFile(new File(filePath), bytes);
}

Getting request URL in a servlet

The getRequestURL() omits the port when it is 80 while the scheme is http, or when it is 443 while the scheme is https.

So, just use getRequestURL() if all you want is obtaining the entire URL. This does however not include the GET query string. You may want to construct it as follows then:

StringBuffer requestURL = request.getRequestURL();
if (request.getQueryString() != null) {
    requestURL.append("?").append(request.getQueryString());
}
String completeURL = requestURL.toString();

How to remove leading and trailing whitespace in a MySQL field?

I know its already accepted, but for thoses like me who look for "remove ALL whitespaces" (not just at the begining and endingof the string):

select SUBSTRING_INDEX('1234 243', ' ', 1);
// returns '1234'

EDIT 2019/6/20 : Yeah, that's not good. The function returns the part of the string since "when the character space occured for the first time". So, I guess that saying this remove the leading and trailling whitespaces and returns the first word :

select SUBSTRING_INDEX(TRIM(' 1234 243'), ' ', 1);

Convert line endings

Doing this with POSIX is tricky:

  • POSIX Sed does not support \r or \15. Even if it did, the in place option -i is not POSIX

  • POSIX Awk does support \r and \15, however the -i inplace option is not POSIX

  • d2u and dos2unix are not POSIX utilities, but ex is

  • POSIX ex does not support \r, \15, \n or \12

To remove carriage returns:

awk 'BEGIN{RS="^$";ORS="";getline;gsub("\r","");print>ARGV[1]}' file

To add carriage returns:

awk 'BEGIN{RS="^$";ORS="";getline;gsub("\n","\r&");print>ARGV[1]}' file

PHP ternary operator vs null coalescing operator

When your first argument is null, they're basically the same except that the null coalescing won't output an E_NOTICE when you have an undefined variable. The PHP 7.0 migration docs has this to say:

The null coalescing operator (??) has been added as syntactic sugar for the common case of needing to use a ternary in conjunction with isset(). It returns its first operand if it exists and is not NULL; otherwise it returns its second operand.

Here's some example code to demonstrate this:

<?php

$a = null;

print $a ?? 'b'; // b
print "\n";

print $a ?: 'b'; // b
print "\n";

print $c ?? 'a'; // a
print "\n";

print $c ?: 'a'; // Notice: Undefined variable: c in /in/apAIb on line 14
print "\n";

$b = array('a' => null);

print $b['a'] ?? 'd'; // d
print "\n";

print $b['a'] ?: 'd'; // d
print "\n";

print $b['c'] ?? 'e'; // e
print "\n";

print $b['c'] ?: 'e'; // Notice: Undefined index: c in /in/apAIb on line 33
print "\n";

The lines that have the notice are the ones where I'm using the shorthand ternary operator as opposed to the null coalescing operator. However, even with the notice, PHP will give the same response back.

Execute the code: https://3v4l.org/McavC

Of course, this is always assuming the first argument is null. Once it's no longer null, then you end up with differences in that the ?? operator would always return the first argument while the ?: shorthand would only if the first argument was truthy, and that relies on how PHP would type-cast things to a boolean.

So:

$a = false ?? 'f'; // false
$b = false ?: 'g'; // 'g'

would then have $a be equal to false and $b equal to 'g'.

Variables declared outside function

When Python parses a function, it notes when a variable assignment is made. When there is an assignment, it assumes by default that that variable is a local variable. To declare that the assignment refers to a global variable, you must use the global declaration.

When you access a variable in a function, its value is looked up using the LEGB scoping rules.

So, the first example

  x = 1
  def inc():
      x += 5
  inc()

produces an UnboundLocalError because Python determined x inside inc to be a local variable,

while accessing x works in your second example

 def inc():
    print x

because here, in accordance with the LEGB rule, Python looks for x in the local scope, does not find it, then looks for it in the extended scope, still does not find it, and finally looks for it in the global scope successfully.

How to integrate sourcetree for gitlab

It worked for me, but only with https link in repository setting (Repository => Repository Settings). You need to change setting to:

URL / path: https://**********.com/username/project.git
Host Type - Stash
Host Root URL - your root URL to GitLab (example:https://**********.com/)
Username - leave blank

or in some cases if you have ssh url like:

[email protected]:USER/REPOSITORY.git

and your email like:

[email protected]

then this settings should be work:

URL / path: https://test%[email protected]:USER/REPOSITORY.git

How to redirect Valgrind's output to a file?

By default, Valgrind writes its output to stderr. So you need to do something like:

valgrind a.out > log.txt 2>&1

Alternatively, you can tell Valgrind to write somewhere else; see http://valgrind.org/docs/manual/manual-core.html#manual-core.comment (but I've never tried this).

White spaces are required between publicId and systemId

I just found my self with this Exception, I was trying to consume a JAX-WS, with a custom URL like this:

String WSDL_URL= <get value from properties file>;
Customer service = new Customer(new URL(WSDL_URL));
ExecutePtt port = service.getExecutePt();
return port.createMantainCustomers(part);

and Java threw:

XML reader error: javax.xml.stream.XMLStreamException: ParseError at [row,col]:[1,63]
Message: White spaces are required between publicId and systemId.

Turns out that the URL string used to construct the service was missing the "?wsdl" at the end. For instance:

Bad:

http://www.host.org/service/Customer

Good:

http://www.host.org/service/Customer?wsdl

Function pointer as a member of a C struct

My guess is that part of your problem is the parameter lists not matching.

int (* length)();

and

int length(PString * self)

are not the same. It should be int (* length)(PString *);.

...woah, it's Jon!

Edit: and, as mentioned below, your struct pointer is never set to point to anything. The way you're doing it would only work if you were declaring a plain struct, not a pointer.

str = (PString *)malloc(sizeof(PString));

Read file from aws s3 bucket using node fs

I prefer Buffer.from(data.Body).toString('utf8'). It supports encoding parameters. With other AWS services (ex. Kinesis Streams) someone may want to replace 'utf8' encoding with 'base64'.

Rails 4 LIKE query - ActiveRecord adds quotes

Instead of using the conditions syntax from Rails 2, use Rails 4's where method instead:

def self.search(search, page = 1 )
  wildcard_search = "%#{search}%"

  where("name ILIKE :search OR postal_code LIKE :search", search: wildcard_search)
    .page(page)
    .per_page(5)
end

NOTE: the above uses parameter syntax instead of ? placeholder: these both should generate the same sql.

def self.search(search, page = 1 )
  wildcard_search = "%#{search}%"

  where("name ILIKE ? OR postal_code LIKE ?", wildcard_search, wildcard_search)
    .page(page)
    .per_page(5)
end

NOTE: using ILIKE for the name - postgres case insensitive version of LIKE

Updating PartialView mvc 4

Controller :

public ActionResult Refresh(string ID)

        /* "productDetails " is a property in "DetailsViewModel"

        "_product" is an interface of "Product" class */

        return PartialView("_Details", vm); // Details is a partial view
    }

In yore index page you should to have refresh link :

     <a href="#" id="refreshItem">Refresh</a>

This Script should be also in your index page:

<script type="text/javascript">

    $('a[id=refreshItem]:last').click(function (e) {
        e.preventDefault();

        var url = MVC.Url.action('Refresh', 'MyController', { itemId: '@(Model.itemProp.itemId )' }); // Refresh is an Action in controller, MyController is a controller name

How to prevent page scrolling when scrolling a DIV element?

just offering this up as a possible solution if you don't think the user will have a negative experience on the obvious change. I simply changed the body's class of overflow to hidden when the mouse was over the target div; then I changed the body's div to hidden overflow when the mouse leaves.

Personally I don't think it looks bad, my code could use toggle to make it cleaner, and there are obvious benefits for making this effect possible without the user being aware. So this is probably the hackish-last-resort answer.

//listen mouse on and mouse off for the button
pxMenu.addEventListener("mouseover", toggleA1);
pxOptContainer.addEventListener("mouseout", toggleA2);
//show / hide the pixel option menu
function toggleA1(){
  pxOptContainer.style.display = "flex";
  body.style.overflow = "hidden";
}
function toggleA2(){
  pxOptContainer.style.display = "none";
  body.style.overflow = "hidden scroll";
}

How can I select all children of an element except the last child?

You can use the negation pseudo-class :not() against the :last-child pseudo-class. Being introduced CSS Selectors Level 3, it doesn't work in IE8 or below:

Gson: How to exclude specific fields from Serialization without annotations

Nishant provided a good solution, but there's an easier way. Simply mark the desired fields with the @Expose annotation, such as:

@Expose private Long id;

Leave out any fields that you do not want to serialize. Then just create your Gson object this way:

Gson gson = new GsonBuilder().excludeFieldsWithoutExposeAnnotation().create();

Enabling error display in PHP via htaccess only

php_flag display_errors on

To turn the actual display of errors on.

To set the types of errors you are displaying, you will need to use:

php_value error_reporting <integer>

Combined with the integer values from this page: http://php.net/manual/en/errorfunc.constants.php

Note if you use -1 for your integer, it will show all errors, and be future proof when they add in new types of errors.

How To Remove Outline Border From Input Button

Set both the outline and the box-shadow properties of the button to none and make them important.

input[type="button"] {
    outline: none !important;
    box-shadow: none !important;
}

The reason for setting the values to important is that, if you are using other CSS libraries or frameworks like Bootstrap, it might get overridden.

How to interactively (visually) resolve conflicts in SourceTree / git

From SourceTree, click on Tools->Options. Then on the "General" tab, make sure to check the box to allow SourceTree to modify your Git config files.

Then switch to the "Diff" tab. On the lower half, use the drop down to select the external program you want to use to do the diffs and merging. I've installed KDiff3 and like it well enough. When you're done, click OK.

Now when there is a merge, you can go under Actions->Resolve Conflicts->Launch External Merge Tool.

How to parse a String containing XML in Java and retrieve the value of the root node?

You could also use tools provided by the base JRE:

System.out.println(parse.getFirstChild().getTextContent());

How to sort multidimensional array by column?

The optional key parameter to sort/sorted is a function. The function is called for each item and the return values determine the ordering of the sort

>>> lst = [['John', 2], ['Jim', 9], ['Jason', 1]]
>>> def my_key_func(item):
...     print("The key for {} is {}".format(item, item[1]))
...     return item[1]
...
>>> sorted(lst, key=my_key_func)
The key for ['John', 2] is 2
The key for ['Jim', 9] is 9
The key for ['Jason', 1] is 1
[['Jason', 1], ['John', 2], ['Jim', 9]]

taking the print out of the function leaves

>>> def my_key_func(item):
...     return item[1]

This function is simple enough to write "inline" as a lambda function

>>> sorted(lst, key=lambda item: item[1])
[['Jason', 1], ['John', 2], ['Jim', 9]]

Difference between F5, Ctrl + F5 and click on refresh button?

F5 and the refresh button will look at your browser cache before asking the server for content.

Ctrl + F5 forces a load from the server.

You can set content expiration headers and/or meta tags to ensure the browser doesn't cache anything (perhaps something you can do only for the development environment).

CALL command vs. START with /WAIT option

This is what I found while running batch files in parallel (multiple instances of the same bat file at the same time with different input parameters) :

Lets say that you have an exe file that performs a long task called LongRunningTask.exe

If you call the exe directly from the bat file, only the first call to the LongRunningTask will succed, while the rest will get an OS error "File is already in use by the process"

If you use this command:

start /B /WAIT "" "LongRunningTask.exe" "parameters"

You will be able to run multiple instances of the bat and exe, while still waiting for the task to finish before the bat continues executing the remaining commands. The /B option is to avoid creating another window, the empty quotes are needed in order to the command to work, see the reference below.

Note that if you don´t use the /WAIT in the start, the LongRunningTask will be executed at the same time than the remaining commands in the batch file, so it might create problems if one of these commands requires the output of the LongRunningTask

Resuming :

This can´t run in parallel :

  • call LongRunningTask.exe

This will run in parallel and will be ok as far as there are no data dependencies between the output of the command and the rest of the bat file :

  • start /B "" "LongRunningTask.exe" "parameters"

This will run in parallel and wait for the task to finish, so you can use the output :

  • start /B /WAIT "" "LongRunningTask.exe" "parameters"

Reference for the start command : How can I run a program from a batch file without leaving the console open after the program start?

Block Comments in a Shell Script

In bash:

#!/bin/bash
echo before comment
: <<'END'
bla bla
blurfl
END
echo after comment

The ' and ' around the END delimiter are important, otherwise things inside the block like for example $(command) will be parsed and executed.

SQL Server format decimal places with commas

Thankfully(?), in SQL Server 2012+, you can now use FORMAT() to achieve this:

FORMAT(@s,'#,0.0000')

In prior versions, at the risk of looking real ugly

[Query]:

declare @s decimal(18,10);
set @s = 1234.1234567;
select replace(convert(varchar,cast(floor(@s) as money),1),'.00',
    '.'+right(cast(@s * 10000 +10000.5 as int),4))

In the first part, we use MONEY->VARCHAR to produce the commas, but FLOOR() is used to ensure the decimals go to .00. This is easily identifiable and replaced with the 4 digits after the decimal place using a mixture of shifting (*10000) and CAST as INT (truncation) to derive the digits.

[Results]:

|   COLUMN_0 |
--------------
| 1,234.1235 |

But unless you have to deliver business reports using SQL Server Management Studio or SQLCMD, this is NEVER the correct solution, even if it can be done. Any front-end or reporting environment has proper functions to handle display formatting.

Git branching: master vs. origin/master vs. remotes/origin/master

  1. origin - This is a custom and most common name to point to remote.

$ git remote add origin https://github.com/git/git.git --- You will run this command to link your github project to origin. Here origin is user-defined. You can rename it by $ git remote rename old-name new-name

  1. master - The default branch name in Git is master. For both remote and local computer.

  1. origin/master - This is just a pointer to refer master branch in remote repo. Remember i said origin points to remote.

$ git fetch origin - Downloads objects and refs from remote repository to your local computer [origin/master]. That means it will not affect your local master branch unless you merge them using $ git merge origin/master. Remember to checkout the correct branch where you need to merge before run this command

Note: Fetched content is represented as a remote branch. Fetch gives you a chance to review changes before integrating them into your copy of the project. To show changes between yours and remote $git diff master..origin/master

How is attr_accessible used in Rails 4?

1) Update Devise so that it can handle Rails 4.0 by adding this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'devise', '3.0.0.rc'

Then execute:

$ bundle

2) Add the old functionality of attr_accessible again to rails 4.0

Try to use attr_accessible and don't comment this out.

Add this line to your application's Gemfile:

gem 'protected_attributes'

Then execute:

$ bundle

This declaration has no storage class or type specifier in C++

This is a mistake:

m.check(side);

That code has to go inside a function. Your class definition can only contain declarations and functions.

Classes don't "run", they provide a blueprint for how to make an object.

The line Message m; means that an Orderbook will contain Message called m, if you later create an Orderbook.

Where can I find System.Web.Helpers, System.Web.WebPages, and System.Web.Razor?

In VS 2010 just right click on project or on reference and click add reference. On the popup window Select Assemblies - > Extensions -> System.Web.Helpers

How to make popup look at the centre of the screen?

In order to get the popup exactly centered, it's a simple matter of applying a negative top margin of half the div height, and a negative left margin of half the div width. For this example, like so:

.div {
    position: fixed;
    top: 50%;
    left: 50%;
    transform: translate(-50%, -50%);
    width: 50%;
}

How to apply box-shadow on all four sides?

You can different combinations at the following link.

The results which you need can be achieved by the following CSS

-webkit-box-shadow: 0px 0px 11px 1px rgba(0,0,0,1);
-moz-box-shadow: 0px 0px 11px 1px rgba(0,0,0,1);
box-shadow: 0px 0px 11px 1px rgba(0,0,0,1);

Convert Date/Time for given Timezone - java

Joda-Time

The java.util.Date/Calendar classes are a mess and should be avoided.

Update: The Joda-Time project is in maintenance mode. The team advises migration to the java.time classes.

Here's your answer using the Joda-Time 2.3 library. Very easy.

As noted in the example code, I suggest you use named time zones wherever possible so that your programming can handle Daylight Saving Time (DST) and other anomalies.

If you had placed a T in the middle of your string instead of a space, you could skip the first two lines of code, dealing with a formatter to parse the string. The DateTime constructor can take a string in ISO 8601 format.

// © 2013 Basil Bourque. This source code may be used freely forever by anyone taking full responsibility for doing so.
// import org.joda.time.*;
// import org.joda.time.format.*;

// Parse string as a date-time in UTC (no time zone offset).
DateTimeFormatter formatter = org.joda.time.format.DateTimeFormat.forPattern( "yyyy-MM-dd' 'HH:mm:ss" );
DateTime dateTimeInUTC = formatter.withZoneUTC().parseDateTime( "2011-10-06 03:35:05" );

// Adjust for 13 hour offset from UTC/GMT.
DateTimeZone offsetThirteen = DateTimeZone.forOffsetHours( 13 );
DateTime thirteenDateTime = dateTimeInUTC.toDateTime( offsetThirteen );

// Hard-coded offsets should be avoided. Better to use a desired time zone for handling Daylight Saving Time (DST) and other anomalies.
// Time Zone list… http://joda-time.sourceforge.net/timezones.html
DateTimeZone timeZoneTongatapu = DateTimeZone.forID( "Pacific/Tongatapu" );
DateTime tongatapuDateTime = dateTimeInUTC.toDateTime( timeZoneTongatapu );

Dump those values…

System.out.println( "dateTimeInUTC: " + dateTimeInUTC );
System.out.println( "thirteenDateTime: " + thirteenDateTime );
System.out.println( "tongatapuDateTime: " + tongatapuDateTime );

When run…

dateTimeInUTC: 2011-10-06T03:35:05.000Z
thirteenDateTime: 2011-10-06T16:35:05.000+13:00
tongatapuDateTime: 2011-10-06T16:35:05.000+13:00

Skip to next iteration in loop vba

Just do nothing once the criteria is met, otherwise do the processing you require and the For loop will go to the next item.

For i = 2 To 24
    Level = Cells(i, 4)
    Return = Cells(i, 5)

    If Return = 0 And Level = 0 Then
        'Do nothing
    Else
        'Do something
    End If
Next i

Or change the clause so it only processes if the conditions are met:

For i = 2 To 24
    Level = Cells(i, 4)
    Return = Cells(i, 5)

    If Return <> 0 Or Level <> 0 Then
        'Do something
    End If
Next i

What does -Xmn jvm option stands for

From here:

-Xmn : the size of the heap for the young generation

Young generation represents all the objects which have a short life of time. Young generation objects are in a specific location into the heap, where the garbage collector will pass often. All new objects are created into the young generation region (called "eden"). When an object survive is still "alive" after more than 2-3 gc cleaning, then it will be swap has an "old generation" : they are "survivor".

And a more "official" source from IBM:

-Xmn

Sets the initial and maximum size of the new (nursery) heap to the specified value when using -Xgcpolicy:gencon. Equivalent to setting both -Xmns and -Xmnx. If you set either -Xmns or -Xmnx, you cannot set -Xmn. If you attempt to set -Xmn with either -Xmns or -Xmnx, the VM will not start, returning an error. By default, -Xmn is selected internally according to your system's capability. You can use the -verbose:sizes option to find out the values that the VM is currently using.

How to pick just one item from a generator?

For picking just one element of a generator use break in a for statement, or list(itertools.islice(gen, 1))

According to your example (literally) you can do something like:

while True:
  ...
  if something:
      for my_element in myfunct():
          dostuff(my_element)
          break
      else:
          do_generator_empty()

If you want "get just one element from the [once generated] generator whenever I like" (I suppose 50% thats the original intention, and the most common intention) then:

gen = myfunct()
while True:
  ...
  if something:
      for my_element in gen:
          dostuff(my_element)
          break
      else:
          do_generator_empty()

This way explicit use of generator.next() can be avoided, and end-of-input handling doesn't require (cryptic) StopIteration exception handling or extra default value comparisons.

The else: of for statement section is only needed if you want do something special in case of end-of-generator.

Note on next() / .next():

In Python3 the .next() method was renamed to .__next__() for good reason: its considered low-level (PEP 3114). Before Python 2.6 the builtin function next() did not exist. And it was even discussed to move next() to the operator module (which would have been wise), because of its rare need and questionable inflation of builtin names.

Using next() without default is still very low-level practice - throwing the cryptic StopIteration like a bolt out of the blue in normal application code openly. And using next() with default sentinel - which best should be the only option for a next() directly in builtins - is limited and often gives reason to odd non-pythonic logic/readablity.

Bottom line: Using next() should be very rare - like using functions of operator module. Using for x in iterator , islice, list(iterator) and other functions accepting an iterator seamlessly is the natural way of using iterators on application level - and quite always possible. next() is low-level, an extra concept, unobvious - as the question of this thread shows. While e.g. using break in for is conventional.

How do you get the cursor position in a textarea?

Here is code to get line number and column position

function getLineNumber(tArea) {

    return tArea.value.substr(0, tArea.selectionStart).split("\n").length;
}

function getCursorPos() {
    var me = $("textarea[name='documenttext']")[0];
    var el = $(me).get(0);
    var pos = 0;
    if ('selectionStart' in el) {
        pos = el.selectionStart;
    } else if ('selection' in document) {
        el.focus();
        var Sel = document.selection.createRange();
        var SelLength = document.selection.createRange().text.length;
        Sel.moveStart('character', -el.value.length);
        pos = Sel.text.length - SelLength;
    }
    var ret = pos - prevLine(me);
    alert(ret);

    return ret;
}

function prevLine(me) {
    var lineArr = me.value.substr(0, me.selectionStart).split("\n");

    var numChars = 0;

    for (var i = 0; i < lineArr.length-1; i++) {
        numChars += lineArr[i].length+1;
    }

    return numChars;
}

How do I drag and drop files into an application?

In Windows Forms, set the control's AllowDrop property, then listen for DragEnter event and DragDrop event.

When the DragEnter event fires, set the argument's AllowedEffect to something other than none (e.g. e.Effect = DragDropEffects.Move).

When the DragDrop event fires, you'll get a list of strings. Each string is the full path to the file being dropped.

Is there a reason for C#'s reuse of the variable in a foreach?

In C# 5.0, this problem is fixed and you can close over loop variables and get the results you expect.

The language specification says:

8.8.4 The foreach statement

(...)

A foreach statement of the form

foreach (V v in x) embedded-statement

is then expanded to:

{
  E e = ((C)(x)).GetEnumerator();
  try {
      while (e.MoveNext()) {
          V v = (V)(T)e.Current;
          embedded-statement
      }
  }
  finally {
      … // Dispose e
  }
}

(...)

The placement of v inside the while loop is important for how it is captured by any anonymous function occurring in the embedded-statement. For example:

int[] values = { 7, 9, 13 };
Action f = null;
foreach (var value in values)
{
    if (f == null) f = () => Console.WriteLine("First value: " + value);
}
f();

If v was declared outside of the while loop, it would be shared among all iterations, and its value after the for loop would be the final value, 13, which is what the invocation of f would print. Instead, because each iteration has its own variable v, the one captured by f in the first iteration will continue to hold the value 7, which is what will be printed. (Note: earlier versions of C# declared v outside of the while loop.)

postgres default timezone

Maybe not related to the question, but I needed to use CST, set the system timezone to the desired tz (America/...) and then in postgresql conf set the value of the timezone to 'localtime' and it worked as a charm, current_time printing the right time (Postgresql 9.5 on Ubuntu 16)

Is there a way to use PhantomJS in Python?

The answer by @Pykler is great but the Node requirement is outdated. The comments in that answer suggest the simpler answer, which I've put here to save others time:

  1. Install PhantomJS

    As @Vivin-Paliath points out, it's a standalone project, not part of Node.

    Mac:

    brew install phantomjs

    Ubuntu:

    sudo apt-get install phantomjs

    etc

  2. Set up a virtualenv (if you haven't already):

    virtualenv mypy # doesn't have to be "mypy". Can be anything.
    . mypy/bin/activate

    If your machine has both Python 2 and 3 you may need run virtualenv-3.6 mypy or similar.

  3. Install selenium:

    pip install selenium

  4. Try a simple test, like this borrowed from the docs:

    from selenium import webdriver
    from selenium.webdriver.common.keys import Keys

    driver = webdriver.PhantomJS()
    driver.get("http://www.python.org")
    assert "Python" in driver.title
    elem = driver.find_element_by_name("q")
    elem.clear()
    elem.send_keys("pycon")
    elem.send_keys(Keys.RETURN)
    assert "No results found." not in driver.page_source
    driver.close()

How to get the last day of the month?

Considering there are unequal number of days in different months, here is the standard solution that works for every month.

import datetime
ref_date = datetime.today() # or what ever specified date

end_date_of_month = datetime.strptime(datetime.strftime(ref_date + relativedelta(months=1), '%Y-%m-01'),'%Y-%m-%d') + relativedelta(days=-1)

In the above code we are just adding a month to our selected date and then navigating to the first day of that month and then subtracting a day from that date.

What's the difference between implementation and compile in Gradle?

Brief Solution:

The better approach is to replace all compile dependencies with implementation dependencies. And only where you leak a module’s interface, you should use api. That should cause a lot less recompilation.

 dependencies {
         implementation fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar'])

         implementation 'com.android.support:appcompat-v7:25.4.0'
         implementation 'com.android.support.constraint:constraint-layout:1.0.2'
         // …

         testImplementation 'junit:junit:4.12'
         androidTestImplementation('com.android.support.test.espresso:espresso-core:2.2.2', {
             exclude group: 'com.android.support', module: 'support-annotations'
         })
 }

Explain More:

Before Android Gradle plugin 3.0: we had a big problem which is one code change causes all modules to be recompiled. The root cause for this is that Gradle doesn’t know if you leak the interface of a module through another one or not.

After Android Gradle plugin 3.0: the latest Android Gradle plugin now requires you to explicitly define if you leak a module’s interface. Based on that it can make the right choice on what it should recompile.

As such the compile dependency has been deprecated and replaced by two new ones:

  • api: you leak the interface of this module through your own interface, meaning exactly the same as the old compile dependency

  • implementation: you only use this module internally and does not leak it through your interface

So now you can explicitly tell Gradle to recompile a module if the interface of a used module changes or not.

What is the "assert" function?

assert will terminate the program (usually with a message quoting the assert statement) if its argument turns out to be false. It's commonly used during debugging to make the program fail more obviously if an unexpected condition occurs.

For example:

assert(length >= 0);  // die if length is negative.

You can also add a more informative message to be displayed if it fails like so:

assert(length >= 0 && "Whoops, length can't possibly be negative! (didn't we just check 10 lines ago?) Tell jsmith");

Or else like this:

assert(("Length can't possibly be negative! Tell jsmith", length >= 0));

When you're doing a release (non-debug) build, you can also remove the overhead of evaluating assert statements by defining the NDEBUG macro, usually with a compiler switch. The corollary of this is that your program should never rely on the assert macro running.

// BAD
assert(x++);

// GOOD
assert(x);
x++;

// Watch out! Depends on the function:
assert(foo());

// Here's a safer way:
int ret = foo();
assert(ret);

From the combination of the program calling abort() and not being guaranteed to do anything, asserts should only be used to test things that the developer has assumed rather than, for example, the user entering a number rather than a letter (which should be handled by other means).

You will have something like :

"Comparison method violates its general contract!"

Even if your compareTo is holds transitivity in theory, sometimes subtle bugs mess things up... such as floating point arithmetic error. It happened to me. this was my code:

public int compareTo(tfidfContainer compareTfidf) {
    //descending order
    if (this.tfidf > compareTfidf.tfidf)
        return -1;
    else if (this.tfidf < compareTfidf.tfidf)
        return 1;
    else
        return 0;

}

The transitive property clearly holds, but for some reason I was getting the IllegalArgumentException. And it turns out that due to tiny errors in floating point arithmetic, the round-off errors where causing the transitive property to break where they shouldn't! So I rewrote the code to consider really tiny differences 0, and it worked:

public int compareTo(tfidfContainer compareTfidf) {
    //descending order
    if ((this.tfidf - compareTfidf.tfidf) < .000000001)
        return 0;
    if (this.tfidf > compareTfidf.tfidf)
        return -1;
    else if (this.tfidf < compareTfidf.tfidf)
        return 1;
    return 0;
}

Extracting .jar file with command line

From the docs:

To extract the files from a jar file, use x, as in:

C:\Java> jar xf myFile.jar

To extract only certain files from a jar file, supply their filenames:

C:\Java> jar xf myFile.jar foo bar

The folder where jar is probably isn't C:\Java for you, on my Windows partition it's:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk[some_version_here]\bin

Unless the location of jar is in your path environment variable, you'll have to specify the full path/run the program from inside the folder.

EDIT: Here's another article, specifically focussed on extracting JARs: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/deployment/jar/unpack.html

Remove git mapping in Visual Studio 2015

In addition to Juliano Nunes Silva Oliveira's answer, the simplest and most clean way without hacking into the regedit, removing hidden .git folders or changing your VS15 settings is by connecting to a different repository. When connected you see the text of the other repository bold then select your Git local repository. Now you see that the

Remove

menu item is enabled so you are able to delete your Git local repository.

It's the same type of behaviour when dealing with Branches when using Git with visual studio 2015. You need to select different branch before you can delete the branch you wan to delete.

Best approach to remove time part of datetime in SQL Server

If possible, for special things like this, I like to use CLR functions.

In this case:

[Microsoft.SqlServer.Server.SqlFunction]
    public static SqlDateTime DateOnly(SqlDateTime input)
    {
        if (!input.IsNull)
        {
            SqlDateTime dt = new SqlDateTime(input.Value.Year, input.Value.Month, input.Value.Day, 0, 0, 0);

            return dt;
        }
        else
            return SqlDateTime.Null;
    }

Generate random int value from 3 to 6

This generates a random number between 0-9

SELECT ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()) % 10)

1 through 6

SELECT ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()) % 6) + 1

3 through 6

SELECT ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()) % 4) + 3

Dynamic (Based on Eilert Hjelmeseths Comment, updated to fix bug( + to -))

SELECT ABS(CHECKSUM(NEWID()) % (@max - @min - 1)) + @min

Updated based on comments:

  • NEWID generates random string (for each row in return)
  • CHECKSUM takes value of string and creates number
  • modulus (%) divides by that number and returns the remainder (meaning max value is one less than the number you use)
  • ABS changes negative results to positive
  • then add one to the result to eliminate 0 results (to simulate a dice roll)

Change GitHub Account username

Yes, this is an old question. But it's misleading, as this was the first result in my search, and both the answers aren't correct anymore.

You can change your Github account name at any time.

To do this, click your profile picture > Settings > Account Settings > Change Username.

Links to your repositories will redirect to the new URLs, but they should be updated on other sites because someone who chooses your abandoned username can override the links. Links to your profile page will be 404'd.

For more information, see the official help page.

And furthermore, if you want to change your username to something else, but that specific username is being taken up by someone else who has been completely inactive for the entire time their account has existed, you can report their account for name squatting.

Open a URL in a new tab (and not a new window)

There is an answer to this question and it is not no.

I found an easy work around:

Step 1: Create an invisible link:

<a id="yourId" href="yourlink.html" target="_blank" style="display: none;"></a>

Step 2: Click on that link programmatically:

document.getElementById("yourId").click();

Here you go! Works a charm for me.

What are the advantages of NumPy over regular Python lists?

Here's a nice answer from the FAQ on the scipy.org website:

What advantages do NumPy arrays offer over (nested) Python lists?

Python’s lists are efficient general-purpose containers. They support (fairly) efficient insertion, deletion, appending, and concatenation, and Python’s list comprehensions make them easy to construct and manipulate. However, they have certain limitations: they don’t support “vectorized” operations like elementwise addition and multiplication, and the fact that they can contain objects of differing types mean that Python must store type information for every element, and must execute type dispatching code when operating on each element. This also means that very few list operations can be carried out by efficient C loops – each iteration would require type checks and other Python API bookkeeping.

Best Practices: working with long, multiline strings in PHP?

I use similar system as pix0r and I think that makes the code quite readable. Sometimes I would actually go as far as separating the line breaks in double quotes and use single quotes for the rest of the string. That way they stand out from the rest of the text and variables also stand out better if you use concatenation rather than inject them inside double quoted string. So I might do something like this with your original example:

$text = 'Hello ' . $vars->name . ','
      . "\r\n\r\n"
      . 'The second line starts two lines below.'
      . "\r\n\r\n"
      . 'I also don\'t want any spaces before the new line,'
      . ' so it\'s butted up against the left side of the screen.';

return $text;

Regarding the line breaks, with email you should always use \r\n. PHP_EOL is for files that are meant to be used in the same operating system that php is running on.

Get values from label using jQuery

While this question is rather old, and has been answered, I thought I'd take the time to offer a couple of options that are, as yet, not addressed in other answers.

Given the corrected HTML (camelCasing the id attribute-value) of:

<label year="2010" month="6" id="currentMonth"> June &nbsp;2010</label>

You could use regular expressions to extract the month-name, and year:

// gets the eleent with an id equal to 'currentMonth',
// retrieves its text-content,
// uses String.prototype.trim() to remove leading and trailing white-space:
var labelText = $('#currentMonth').text().trim(),
    // finds the sequence of one, or more, letters (a-z, inclusive)
    // at the start (^) of the string, and retrieves the first match from
    // the array returned by the match() method:
    month = labelText.match(/^[a-z]+/i)[0],
    // finds the sequence of numbers (\d) of length 2-4 ({2,4}) characters,
    // at the end ($) of the string:
    year = labelText.match(/\d{2,4}$/)[0];

_x000D_
_x000D_
var labelText = $('#currentMonth').text().trim(),_x000D_
    month = labelText.match(/^[a-z]+/i)[0],_x000D_
    year = labelText.match(/\d{2,4}$/)[0];_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(month, year);
_x000D_
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>_x000D_
<label year="2010" month="6" id="currentMonth"> June &nbsp;2010</label>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Rather than regular expressions, though, you could instead use custom data-* attributes (which work in HTML 4.x, despite being invalid under the doctype, but are valid under HTML 5):

_x000D_
_x000D_
var label = $('#currentMonth'),_x000D_
    month = label.data('month'),_x000D_
    year = label.data('year');_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(month, year);
_x000D_
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>_x000D_
<label data-year="2010" data-month="6" id="currentMonth"> June &nbsp;2010</label>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Note that this will output 6 (for the data-month), rather than 'June' as in the previous example, though if you use an array to tie numbers to month-names, that can be solved easily:

_x000D_
_x000D_
var monthNames = ['January', 'February', 'March', 'April', 'May', 'June', 'July', 'August', 'September', 'October', 'November', 'December'],_x000D_
    label = $('#currentMonth'),_x000D_
    month = monthNames[+label.data('month') - 1],_x000D_
    year = label.data('year');_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(month, year);
_x000D_
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>_x000D_
<label data-year="2010" data-month="6" id="currentMonth"> June &nbsp;2010</label>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Similarly, the above could be easily transcribed to the native DOM (in compliant browsers):

_x000D_
_x000D_
var monthNames = ['January', 'February', 'March', 'April', 'May', 'June', 'July', 'August', 'September', 'October', 'November', 'December'],_x000D_
    label = document.getElementById('currentMonth'),_x000D_
    month = monthNames[+label.dataset.month - 1],_x000D_
    year = label.dataset.year;_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(month, year);
_x000D_
<script src="https://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/2.1.1/jquery.min.js"></script>_x000D_
<label data-year="2010" data-month="6" id="currentMonth"> June &nbsp;2010</label>

JavaScriptSerializer.Deserialize - how to change field names

I have used the using Newtonsoft.Json as below. Create an object:

 public class WorklistSortColumn
  {
    [JsonProperty(PropertyName = "field")]
    public string Field { get; set; }

    [JsonProperty(PropertyName = "dir")]
    public string Direction { get; set; }

What does asterisk * mean in Python?

See Function Definitions in the Language Reference.

If the form *identifier is present, it is initialized to a tuple receiving any excess positional parameters, defaulting to the empty tuple. If the form **identifier is present, it is initialized to a new dictionary receiving any excess keyword arguments, defaulting to a new empty dictionary.

Also, see Function Calls.

Assuming that one knows what positional and keyword arguments are, here are some examples:

Example 1:

# Excess keyword argument (python 2) example:
def foo(a, b, c, **args):
    print "a = %s" % (a,)
    print "b = %s" % (b,)
    print "c = %s" % (c,)
    print args

foo(a="testa", d="excess", c="testc", b="testb", k="another_excess")

As you can see in the above example, we only have parameters a, b, c in the signature of the foo function. Since d and k are not present, they are put into the args dictionary. The output of the program is:

a = testa
b = testb
c = testc
{'k': 'another_excess', 'd': 'excess'}

Example 2:

# Excess positional argument (python 2) example:
def foo(a, b, c, *args):
    print "a = %s" % (a,)
    print "b = %s" % (b,)
    print "c = %s" % (c,)
    print args

foo("testa", "testb", "testc", "excess", "another_excess")

Here, since we're testing positional arguments, the excess ones have to be on the end, and *args packs them into a tuple, so the output of this program is:

a = testa
b = testb
c = testc
('excess', 'another_excess')

You can also unpack a dictionary or a tuple into arguments of a function:

def foo(a,b,c,**args):
    print "a=%s" % (a,)
    print "b=%s" % (b,)
    print "c=%s" % (c,)
    print "args=%s" % (args,)

argdict = dict(a="testa", b="testb", c="testc", excessarg="string")
foo(**argdict)

Prints:

a=testa
b=testb
c=testc
args={'excessarg': 'string'}

And

def foo(a,b,c,*args):
    print "a=%s" % (a,)
    print "b=%s" % (b,)
    print "c=%s" % (c,)
    print "args=%s" % (args,)

argtuple = ("testa","testb","testc","excess")
foo(*argtuple)

Prints:

a=testa
b=testb
c=testc
args=('excess',)

Make JQuery UI Dialog automatically grow or shrink to fit its contents

The answer is to set the

autoResize:true

property when creating the dialog. In order for this to work you cannot set any height for the dialog. So if you set a fixed height in pixels for the dialog in its creator method or via any style the autoResize property will not work.

How to parse JSON string in Typescript

JSON.parse is available in TypeScript, so you can just use it :

JSON.parse('{"name": "Bob", "error": false}') // Returns a value of type 'any'

However, you will often want to parse a JSON object while making sure it matches a certain type, rather than dealing with a value of type any. In that case, you can define a function such as the following :

function parse_json<TargetType extends Object>(
  json: string,
  type_definitions: { [Key in keyof TargetType]: (raw_value: any) => TargetType[Key] }
): TargetType {
  const raw = JSON.parse(json);
  const result: any = {};
  for (const key in type_definitions) result[key] = type_definitions[key](raw[key]);
  return result;
}

This function takes a JSON string and an object containing individual functions that load each field of the object you are creating. You can use it like so:

const value = parse_json(
  '{"name": "Bob", "error": false}',
  { name: String, error: Boolean, }
);

When to use StringBuilder in Java

The Microsoft certification material addresses this same question. In the .NET world, the overhead for the StringBuilder object makes a simple concatenation of 2 String objects more efficient. I would assume a similar answer for Java strings.

How to serialize SqlAlchemy result to JSON?

Python 3.7+ and Flask 1.1+ can use the built-in dataclasses package

from dataclasses import dataclass
from datetime import datetime
from flask import Flask, jsonify
from flask_sqlalchemy import SQLAlchemy

app = Flask(__name__)
db = SQLAlchemy(app)

@dataclass
class User(db.Model):
  id: int
  email: str

  id = db.Column(db.Integer, primary_key=True, auto_increment=True)
  email = db.Column(db.String(200), unique=True)

@app.route('/users/')
def users():
  users = User.query.all()
  return jsonify(users)

if __name__ == "__main__":
  users = User(email="[email protected]"), User(email="[email protected]")
  db.create_all()
  db.session.add_all(users)
  db.session.commit()
  app.run()

The /users/ route will now return a list of users.

[
  {"email": "[email protected]", "id": 1},
  {"email": "[email protected]", "id": 2}
]

Auto-serialize related models

@dataclass
class Account(db.Model):
  id: int
  users: User

  id = db.Column(db.Integer)
  users = db.relationship(User)  # User model would need a db.ForeignKey field

The response from jsonify(account) would be this.

{
   "id":1,
   "users":[
      {
         "email":"[email protected]",
         "id":1
      },
      {
         "email":"[email protected]",
         "id":2
      }
   ]
}

Overwrite the default JSON Encoder

from flask.json import JSONEncoder

class CustomJSONEncoder(JSONEncoder):
  "Add support for serializing timedeltas"

  def default(o):
    if type(o) == datetime.timedelta:
      return str(o)
    elif type(o) == datetime.datetime:
      return o.isoformat()
    else:
      return super().default(o)

app.json_encoder = CustomJSONEncoder

How to Query Database Name in Oracle SQL Developer?

I know this is an old thread but you can also get some useful info from the V$INSTANCE view as well. the V$DATABASE displays info from the control file, the V$INSTANCE view displays state of the current instance.

iPhone/iOS JSON parsing tutorial

As of iOS 5.0 Apple provides the NSJSONSerialization class "to convert JSON to Foundation objects and convert Foundation objects to JSON". No external frameworks to incorporate and according to benchmarks its performance is quite good, significantly better than SBJSON.

How do I make a comment in a Dockerfile?

Docker treats lines that begin with # as a comment, unless the line is a valid parser directive. A # marker anywhere else in a line is treated as an argument.

example code:

# this line is a comment

RUN echo 'we are running some # of cool things'

Output:

we are running some # of cool things

What is the difference between require_relative and require in Ruby?

I just saw the RSpec's code has some comment on require_relative being O(1) constant and require being O(N) linear. So probably the difference is that require_relative is the preferred one than require.

How to set a cron job to run every 3 hours

How can I check if a JSON is empty in NodeJS?

You can use either of these functions:

// This should work in node.js and other ES5 compliant implementations.
function isEmptyObject(obj) {
  return !Object.keys(obj).length;
}

// This should work both there and elsewhere.
function isEmptyObject(obj) {
  for (var key in obj) {
    if (Object.prototype.hasOwnProperty.call(obj, key)) {
      return false;
    }
  }
  return true;
}

Example usage:

if (isEmptyObject(query)) {
  // There are no queries.
} else {
  // There is at least one query,
  // or at least the query object is not empty.
}

How to get a unique computer identifier in Java (like disk ID or motherboard ID)?

On Windows only, you can get the motherboard ID using WMI, through a COM bridge such as JACOB.

Example:

import java.util.Enumeration;
import com.jacob.activeX.ActiveXComponent;
import com.jacob.com.ComThread;
import com.jacob.com.EnumVariant;
import com.jacob.com.Variant;

public class Test {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        ComThread.InitMTA();
        try {
            ActiveXComponent wmi = new ActiveXComponent("winmgmts:\\\\.");
            Variant instances = wmi.invoke("InstancesOf", "Win32_BaseBoard");
            Enumeration<Variant> en = new EnumVariant(instances.getDispatch());
            while (en.hasMoreElements())
            {
                ActiveXComponent bb = new ActiveXComponent(en.nextElement().getDispatch());
                System.out.println(bb.getPropertyAsString("SerialNumber"));
                break;
            }
        } finally {
            ComThread.Release();
        }
    }
}

And if you choose to use the MAC address to identify the machine, you can use WMI to determine whether an interface is connected via USB (if you want to exclude USB adapters.)

It's also possible to get a hard drive ID via WMI but this is unreliable.

Check if year is leap year in javascript

You can try using JavaScript's Date Object

new Date(year,month).getFullYear()%4==0

This will return true or false.

Attach a file from MemoryStream to a MailMessage in C#

I landed on this question because I needed to attach an Excel file I generate through code and is available as MemoryStream. I could attach it to the mail message but it was sent as 64Bytes file instead of a ~6KB as it was meant. So, the solution that worked for me was this:

MailMessage mailMessage = new MailMessage();
Attachment attachment = new Attachment(myMemorySteam, new ContentType(MediaTypeNames.Application.Octet));

attachment.ContentDisposition.FileName = "myFile.xlsx";
attachment.ContentDisposition.Size = attachment.Length;

mailMessage.Attachments.Add(attachment);

Setting the value of attachment.ContentDisposition.Size let me send messages with the correct size of attachment.

What is the meaning of the CascadeType.ALL for a @ManyToOne JPA association

From the EJB3.0 Specification:

Use of the cascade annotation element may be used to propagate the effect of an operation to associated entities. The cascade functionality is most typically used in parent-child relationships.

If X is a managed entity, the remove operation causes it to become removed. The remove operation is cascaded to entities referenced by X, if the relationships from X to these other entities is annotated with the cascade=REMOVE or cascade=ALL annotation element value.

So in a nutshell, entity relationships defined with CascadeType.All will ensure that all persistence events such as persist, refresh, merge and remove that occur on the parent, will be passed to the child. Defining other CascadeType options provides the developer with a more granular level of control over how the entity association handles persistence.

For example if I had an object Book that contained a List of pages and I add a page object within this list. If the @OneToMany annotation defining the association between Book and Page is marked as CascadeType.All, persisting the Book would result in the Page also being persisted to the database.

CSS3 scrollbar styling on a div

Setting overflow: hidden hides the scrollbar. Set overflow: scroll to make sure the scrollbar appears all the time.

To use the ::webkit-scrollbar property, simply target .scroll before calling it.

.scroll {
   width: 200px;
   height: 400px;
    background: red;
   overflow: scroll;
}
.scroll::-webkit-scrollbar {
    width: 12px;
}

.scroll::-webkit-scrollbar-track {
    -webkit-box-shadow: inset 0 0 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.3);
    border-radius: 10px;
}

.scroll::-webkit-scrollbar-thumb {
    border-radius: 10px;
    -webkit-box-shadow: inset 0 0 6px rgba(0,0,0,0.5);
}

How to discard local commits in Git?

As an aside, apart from the answer by mipadi (which should work by the way), you should know that doing:

git branch -D master
git checkout master

also does exactly what you want without having to redownload everything (your quote paraphrased). That is because your local repo contains a copy of the remote repo (and that copy is not the same as your local directory, it is not even the same as your checked out branch).

Wiping out a branch is perfectly safe and reconstructing that branch is very fast and involves no network traffic. Remember, git is primarily a local repo by design. Even remote branches have a copy on the local. There's only a bit of metadata that tells git that a specific local copy is actually a remote branch. In git, all files are on your hard disk all the time.

If you don't have any branches other than master, you should:

git checkout -b 'temp'
git branch -D master
git checkout master
git branch -D temp

Passing multiple values for same variable in stored procedure

You will need to do a couple of things to get this going, since your parameter is getting multiple values you need to create a Table Type and make your store procedure accept a parameter of that type.

Split Function Works Great when you are getting One String containing multiple values but when you are passing Multiple values you need to do something like this....

TABLE TYPE

CREATE TYPE dbo.TYPENAME AS TABLE ( arg int ) GO

Stored Procedure to Accept That Type Param

 CREATE PROCEDURE mainValues @TableParam TYPENAME READONLY AS BEGIN SET NOCOUNT ON; --Temp table to store split values declare @tmp_values table ( value nvarchar(255) not null); --function splitting values INSERT INTO @tmp_values (value) SELECT arg FROM @TableParam SELECT * FROM @tmp_values --<-- For testing purpose END

EXECUTE PROC

Declare a variable of that type and populate it with your values.

 DECLARE @Table TYPENAME --<-- Variable of this TYPE INSERT INTO @Table --<-- Populating the variable VALUES (331),(222),(876),(932) EXECUTE mainValues @Table --<-- Stored Procedure Executed

Result

╔═══════╗ ║ value ║ ╠═══════╣ ║   331 ║ ║   222 ║ ║   876 ║ ║   932 ║ ╚═══════╝

Can't get private key with openssl (no start line:pem_lib.c:703:Expecting: ANY PRIVATE KEY)

I ran into the 'Expecting: ANY PRIVATE KEY' error when using openssl on Windows (Ubuntu Bash and Git Bash had the same issue).

The cause of the problem was that I'd saved the key and certificate files in Notepad using UTF8. Resaving both files in ANSI format solved the problem.

What is lexical scope?

Lexical (AKA static) scoping refers to determining a variable's scope based solely on its position within the textual corpus of code. A variable always refers to its top-level environment. It's good to understand it in relation to dynamic scope.

How to create an instance of System.IO.Stream stream
