Programs & Examples On #Contextmanager

A python context manager manages the context of a with statement. A context manager defines enter and exit hooks that get called as the code block under the with statement is entered and exited, respectively.

Explaining Python's '__enter__' and '__exit__'

If you know what context managers are then you need nothing more to understand __enter__ and __exit__ magic methods. Lets see a very simple example.

In this example I am opening myfile.txt with help of open function. The try/finally block ensures that even if an unexpected exception occurs myfile.txt will be closed.

fp=open(r"C:\Users\SharpEl\Desktop\myfile.txt")
try:
    for line in fp:
        print(line)
finally:
    fp.close()

Now I am opening same file with with statement:

with open(r"C:\Users\SharpEl\Desktop\myfile.txt") as fp:
    for line in fp:
        print(line)

If you look at the code, I didn't close the file & there is no try/finally block. Because with statement automatically closes myfile.txt . You can even check it by calling print(fp.closed) attribute -- which returns True.

This is because the file objects (fp in my example) returned by open function has two built-in methods __enter__ and __exit__. It is also known as context manager. __enter__ method is called at the start of with block and __exit__ method is called at the end. Note: with statement only works with objects that support the context mamangement protocol i.e. they have __enter__ and __exit__ methods. A class which implement both methods is known as context manager class.

Now lets define our own context manager class.

 class Log:
    def __init__(self,filename):
        self.filename=filename
        self.fp=None
    def logging(self,text):
        self.fp.write(text+'\n')
    def __enter__(self):
        print("__enter__")
        self.fp=open(self.filename,"a+")
        return self
    def __exit__(self, exc_type, exc_val, exc_tb):
        print("__exit__")
        self.fp.close()

with Log(r"C:\Users\SharpEl\Desktop\myfile.txt") as logfile:
    print("Main")
    logfile.logging("Test1")
    logfile.logging("Test2")

I hope now you have basic understanding of both __enter__ and __exit__ magic methods.

Error "package android.support.v7.app does not exist"

Your project is missing the support library from the SDK.

If you have no installed them, just right click on the project > Android Tools > Install support library.

Then, just import into workspace, as an Android project, android-support-v7-appcompat, located into ${android-sdk-path}/extras/android/support/v7

And finally, right click in the Android project > Properties > Android Tab. Push the Add button and add the support project "android-support-v7-appcompat" as dependency.

Clean your project and the must compile and work properly.

Learning to write a compiler

You might want to look into Lex/Yacc (or Flex/Bison, whatever you want to call them). Flex is a lexical analyzer, which will parse and identify the semantic components ("tokens") of your language, and Bison will be used to define what happens when each token is parsed. This could be, but is definitely not limited to, printing out C code, for a compiler that would compile to C, or dynamically running the instructions.

This FAQ should help you, and this tutorial looks quite useful.

I think is only an authentication problem...

  1. Click on your Bitbucket account icon (up right) and go to "Manage account".

Error handling in Bash

An equivalent alternative to "set -e" is

set -o errexit

It makes the meaning of the flag somewhat clearer than just "-e".

Random addition: to temporarily disable the flag, and return to the default (of continuing execution regardless of exit codes), just use

set +e
echo "commands run here returning non-zero exit codes will not cause the entire script to fail"
echo "false returns 1 as an exit code"
false
set -e

This precludes proper error handling mentioned in other responses, but is quick & effective (just like bash).

How to output git log with the first line only?

Have you tried this?

git log --pretty=oneline --abbrev-commit

The problem is probably that you are missing an empty line after the first line. The command above usually works for me, but I just tested on a commit without empty second line. I got the same result as you: the whole message on one line.

Empty second line is a standard in git commit messages. The behaviour you see was probably implemented on purpose.

The first line of a commit message is meant to be a short description. If you cannot make it in a single line you can use several, but git considers everything before the first empty line to be the "short description". oneline prints the whole short description, so all your 3 rows.

Parsing JSON array with PHP foreach

You maybe wanted to do the following:

         {
              echo $values->value . "\n";
         }
    }

What are the differences between the BLOB and TEXT datatypes in MySQL?

TEXT and CHAR will convert to/from the character set they have associated with time. BLOB and BINARY simply store bytes.

BLOB is used for storing binary data while Text is used to store large string.

BLOB values are treated as binary strings (byte strings). They have no character set, and sorting and comparison are based on the numeric values of the bytes in column values.

TEXT values are treated as nonbinary strings (character strings). They have a character set, and values are sorted and compared based on the collation of the character set.

Is there a difference between using a dict literal and a dict constructor?

the dict() literal is nice when you are copy pasting values from something else (none python) For example a list of environment variables. if you had a bash file, say

FOO='bar'
CABBAGE='good'

you can easily paste then into a dict() literal and add comments. It also makes it easier to do the opposite, copy into something else. Whereas the {'FOO': 'bar'} syntax is pretty unique to python and json. So if you use json a lot, you might want to use {} literals with double quotes.

Text Progress Bar in the Console

I recommend using tqdm - https://pypi.python.org/pypi/tqdm - which makes it simple to turn any iterable or process into a progress bar, and handles all messing about with terminals needed.

From the documentation: "tqdm can easily support callbacks/hooks and manual updates. Here’s an example with urllib"

import urllib
from tqdm import tqdm

def my_hook(t):
  """

  ...     urllib.urlretrieve(..., reporthook=reporthook)

  last_b = [0]

  def inner(b=1, bsize=1, tsize=None):
    """

    bsize  : int, optional
        Size of each block (in tqdm units) [default: 1].
    tsize  : int, optional
        Total size (in tqdm units). If [default: None] remains unchanged.
    """
    if tsize is not None:
        t.total = tsize
    t.update((b - last_b[0]) * bsize)
    last_b[0] = b
  return inner

What is the difference between parseInt() and Number()?

Summary:

parseInt():

  • Takes a string as a first argument, the radix (An integer which is the base of a numeral system e.g. decimal 10 or binary 2) as a second argument
  • The function returns a integer number, if the first character cannot be converted to a number NaN will be returned.
  • If the parseInt() function encounters a non numerical value, it will cut off the rest of input string and only parse the part until the non numerical value.
  • If the radix is undefined or 0, JS will assume the following:
    • If the input string begins with "0x" or "0X", the radix is 16 (hexadecimal), the remainder of the string is parsed into a number.
    • If the input value begins with a 0 the radix can be either 8 (octal) or 10 (decimal). Which radix is chosen is depending on JS engine implementation. ES5 specifies that 10 should be used then. However, this is not supported by all browsers, therefore always specify radix if your numbers can begin with a 0.
    • If the input value begins with any number, the radix will be 10

Number():

  • The Number() constructor can convert any argument input into a number. If the Number() constructor cannot convert the input into a number, NaN will be returned.
  • The Number() constructor can also handle hexadecimal number, they have to start with 0x.

Example:

_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log(parseInt('0xF', 16));  // 15_x000D_
_x000D_
// z is no number, it will only evaluate 0xF, therefore 15 is logged_x000D_
console.log(parseInt('0xFz123', 16));_x000D_
_x000D_
// because the radix is 10, A is considered a letter not a number (like in Hexadecimal)_x000D_
// Therefore, A will be cut off the string and 10 is logged_x000D_
console.log(parseInt('10A', 10));  // 10_x000D_
_x000D_
// first character isnot a number, therefore parseInt will return NaN_x000D_
console.log(parseInt('a1213', 10));_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_
console.log('\n');_x000D_
_x000D_

console.log(Number('0x11'));_x000D_
_x000D_
// Cannot be converted to a number, NaN will be returned, notice that_x000D_
// the number constructor will not cut off a non number part like parseInt does_x000D_

PHP display image BLOB from MySQL

Try Like this.

For Inserting into DB

$db = mysqli_connect("localhost","root","","DbName"); //keep your db name
$image = addslashes(file_get_contents($_FILES['images']['tmp_name']));
//you keep your column name setting for insertion. I keep image type Blob.
$query = "INSERT INTO products (id,image) VALUES('','$image')";
$qry = mysqli_query($db, $query);

For Accessing image From Blob

$db = mysqli_connect("localhost","root","","DbName"); //keep your db name
$sql = "SELECT * FROM products WHERE id = $id";
$sth = $db->query($sql);
$result=mysqli_fetch_array($sth);
echo '<img src="data:image/jpeg;base64,'.base64_encode( $result['image'] ).'"/>';

Hope It will help you.

CSS transition when class removed

CSS transitions work by defining two states for the object using CSS. In your case, you define how the object looks when it has the class "saved" and you define how it looks when it doesn't have the class "saved" (it's normal look). When you remove the class "saved", it will transition to the other state according to the transition settings in place for the object without the "saved" class.

If the CSS transition settings apply to the object (without the "saved" class), then they will apply to both transitions.

We could help more specifically if you included all relevant CSS you're using to with the HTML you've provided.

My guess from looking at your HTML is that your transition CSS settings only apply to .saved and thus when you remove it, there are no controls to specify a CSS setting. You may want to add another class ".fade" that you leave on the object all the time and you can specify your CSS transition settings on that class so they are always in effect.

Use success() or complete() in AJAX call

complete executes after either the success or error callback were executed.

Maybe you should check the second parameter complete offers too. It's a String holding the type of success the ajaxCall had.

The different callbacks are described a little more in detail here jQuery.ajax( options )

I guess you missed the fact that the complete and the success function (I know inconsistent API) get different data passed in. success gets only the data, complete gets the whole XMLHttpRequest object. Of course there is no responseText property on the data string.

So if you replace complete with success you also have to replace data.responseText with data only.

success

The function gets passed two arguments: The data returned from the server, formatted according to the 'dataType' parameter, and a string describing the status.

complete

The function gets passed two arguments: The XMLHttpRequest object and a string describing the type of success of the request.

If you need to have access to the whole XMLHttpRequest object in the success callback I suggest trying this.

var myXHR = $.ajax({
    ...
    success: function(data, status) {
        ...do whatever with myXHR; e.g. myXHR.responseText...
    },
    ...
});

Android Recyclerview vs ListView with Viewholder

If you use RecycleView, first you need more efford to setup. You need to give more time to setup simple Item onclick, border, touch event and other simple thing. But end product will be perfect.

So decision is yours. I suggest, if you design simple app like phonebook loading, where simple click of item is enough, you can implement listview. But if you design like social media home page with unlimited scrolling. Several different decoration between item, much control of individual item than use recycle view.

How do I get Flask to run on port 80?

So it's throwing up that error message because you have apache2 running on port 80.

If this is for development, I would just leave it as it is on port 5000.

If it's for production either:

Not Recommended

  • Stop apache2 first;

Not recommended as it states in the documentation:

You can use the builtin server during development, but you should use a full deployment option for production applications. (Do not use the builtin development server in production.)

Recommended

  • Proxy HTTP traffic through apache2 to Flask.

This way, apache2 can handle all your static files (which it's very good at - much better than the debug server built into Flask) and act as a reverse proxy for your dynamic content, passing those requests to Flask.

Here's a link to the official documentation about setting up Flask with Apache + mod_wsgi.

Edit 1 - Clarification for @Djack

Proxy HTTP traffic to Flask through apache2

When a request comes to the server on port 80 (HTTP) or port 443 (HTTPS) a web server like Apache or Nginx handles the connection of the request and works out what to do with it. In our case a request received should be configured to be passed through to Flask on the WSGI protocol and handled by the Python code. This is the "dynamic" part.

reverse proxy for dynamic content

There are a few advantages to configuring your web server like the above;

  • SSL Termination - The web server will be optimized to handle HTTPS requests with only a little configuration. Don't "roll your own" in Python which is probably very insecure in comparison.
  • Security - Opening a port to the internet requires careful consideration of security. Flask's development server is not designed for this and could have open bugs or security issues in comparison to a web server designed for this purpose. Note that a badly configured web server can also be insecure!
  • Static File Handling - It is possible for the builtin Flask web server to handle static files however this is not recommended; Nginx/Apache are much more efficient at handling static files like images, CSS, Javascript files and will only pass "dynamic" requests (those where the content is often read from a database or the content changes) to be handled by the Python code.
  • +more. This is bordering on scope for this question. If you want more info do some research into this area.

How to copy a file from remote server to local machine?

When you use scp you have to tell the host name and ip address from where you want to copy the file. For instance, if you are at the remote host and you want to transfer the file to your pc you may use something like this:

scp -P[portnumber] myfile_at_remote_host [user]@[your_ip_address]:/your/path/

Example:

scp -P22 table [email protected]:/home/me/Desktop/

On the other hand, if you are at your are actually on your machine you may use something like this:

scp -P[portnumber] [remote_login]@[remote's_ip_address]:/remote/path/myfile_at_remote_host /your/path/

Example:

scp -P22 [fake_user]@222.222.222.222:/remote/path/table /home/me/Desktop/

How do I run Java .class files?

You need to set the classpath to find your compiled class:

java -cp C:\Users\Matt\workspace\HelloWorld2\bin HelloWorld2

Run a single migration file

If you've implemented a change method like this:

class AddPartNumberToProducts < ActiveRecord::Migration
  def change
    add_column :products, :part_number, :string
  end
end

You can create an instance of the migration and run migrate(:up) or migrate(:down) on an instance, like this:

$ rails console
>> require "db/migrate/20090408054532_add_part_number_to_products.rb"
>> AddPartNumberToProducts.new.migrate(:down)

How to remove a directory from git repository?

I usually use git add --all to remove files / folders from remote repositories

rm -r folder_name
git add --all
git commit -m "some comment"
git push origin master

master can be replaced by any other branch of the repository.

Difference between java HH:mm and hh:mm on SimpleDateFormat

Use the built-in localized formats

If this is for showing a time of day to a user, then in at least 19 out of 20 you don’t need to care about kk, HH nor hh. I suggest that you use something like this:

    DateTimeFormatter defaultTimeFormatter
            = DateTimeFormatter.ofLocalizedTime(FormatStyle.SHORT);
    System.out.format("%s: %s%n",
            Locale.getDefault(), LocalTime.MIN.format(defaultTimeFormatter));

The point is that it gives different output in different default locales. For example:

en_SS: 12:00 AM
fr_BL: 00:00
ps_AF: 0:00
es_CO: 12:00 a.m.

The localized formats have been designed to conform with the expectations of different cultures. So they generally give the user a better experience and they save you of writing a format pattern string, which is always error-prone.

I furthermore suggest that you don’t use SimpleDateFormat. That class is notoriously troublesome and fortunately long outdated. Instead I use java.time, the modern Java date and time API. It is so much nicer to work with.

Four pattern letters for hour: H, h, k and K

Of course if you need to parse a string with a specified format, and also if you have a very specific formatting requirement, it’s good to use a format pattern string. There are actually four different pattern letters to choose from for hour (quoted from the documentation):

  Symbol  Meaning                     Presentation      Examples
  ------  -------                     ------------      -------
   h       clock-hour-of-am-pm (1-12)  number            12
   K       hour-of-am-pm (0-11)        number            0
   k       clock-hour-of-day (1-24)    number            24
   H       hour-of-day (0-23)          number            0

In practice H and h are used. As far as I know k and K are not (they may just have been included for the sake of completeness). But let’s just see them all in action:

    DateTimeFormatter timeFormatter
            = DateTimeFormatter.ofPattern("hh:mm a  HH:mm  kk:mm  KK:mm a", Locale.ENGLISH);
    System.out.println(LocalTime.of(0, 0).format(timeFormatter));
    System.out.println(LocalTime.of(1, 15).format(timeFormatter));
    System.out.println(LocalTime.of(11, 25).format(timeFormatter));
    System.out.println(LocalTime.of(12, 35).format(timeFormatter));
    System.out.println(LocalTime.of(13, 40).format(timeFormatter));
12:00 AM  00:00  24:00  00:00 AM
01:15 AM  01:15  01:15  01:15 AM
11:25 AM  11:25  11:25  11:25 AM
12:35 PM  12:35  12:35  00:35 PM
01:40 PM  13:40  13:40  01:40 PM

If you don’t want the leading zero, just specify one pattern letter, that is h instead of hh or H instead of HH. It will still accept two digits when parsing, and if a number to be printed is greater than 9, two digits will still be printed.

C++ calling base class constructors

When objects are constructed, it is always first construct base class subobject, therefore, base class constructor is called first, then call derived class constructors. The reason is that derived class objects contain subobjects inherited from base class. You always need to call the base class constructor to initialze base class subobjects. We usually call the base class constructor on derived class's member initialization list. If you do not call base class constructor explicitly, the compile will call the default constructor of base class to initialize base class subobject. However, implicit call on default constructor does not necessary work at all times (for example, if base class defines a constructor that could not be called without arguments).

When objects are out of scope, it will first call destructor of derived class,then call destructor of base class.

Cross domain POST request is not sending cookie Ajax Jquery

Please note this doesn't solve the cookie sharing process, as in general this is bad practice.

You need to be using JSONP as your type:

From $.ajax documentation: Cross-domain requests and dataType: "jsonp" requests do not support synchronous operation.

$.ajax(
    {
      type: "POST",
      url: "http://example.com/api/getlist.json",
      dataType: 'jsonp',
      xhrFields: {
           withCredentials: true
      },
      crossDomain: true,
      beforeSend: function(xhr) {
            xhr.setRequestHeader("Cookie", "session=xxxyyyzzz");
      },
      success: function(){
           alert('success');
      },
      error: function (xhr) {
             alert(xhr.responseText);
      }
    }
);

Could not create SSL/TLS secure channel, despite setting ServerCertificateValidationCallback

In my case TLS1_2 was enabled both on client and server but the server was using MD5 while client disabled it. So, test both client and server on http://ssllabs.com or test using openssl/s_client to see what's happening. Also, check the selected cipher using Wireshark.

TypeError: window.initMap is not a function

In addition to @DB.Null's answer, I used Function.prototype as no-op (no-operation) function on #3 instead of angular.noop (I don't have angular in my project).

So this...

<script async defer src="https://maps.googleapis.com/maps/api/js?key=API_KEY_HERE&callback=Function.prototype" type="text/javascript"></script>

Composer: how can I install another dependency without updating old ones?

Actually, the correct solution is:

composer require vendor/package

Taken from the CLI documentation for Composer:

The require command adds new packages to the composer.json file from the current directory.

php composer.phar require

After adding/changing the requirements, the modified requirements will be installed or updated.

If you do not want to choose requirements interactively, you can just pass them to the command.

php composer.phar require vendor/package:2.* vendor/package2:dev-master

While it is true that composer update installs new packages found in composer.json, it will also update the composer.lock file and any installed packages according to any fuzzy logic (> or * chars after the colons) found in composer.json! This can be avoided by using composer update vendor/package, but I wouldn't recommend making a habit of it, as you're one forgotten argument away from a potentially broken project…

Keep things sane and stick with composer require vendor/package for adding new dependencies!

How can I safely create a nested directory?

Check os.makedirs: (It makes sure the complete path exists.)
To handle the fact the directory might exist, catch OSError. (If exist_ok is False (the default), an OSError is raised if the target directory already exists.)

import os
try:
    os.makedirs('./path/to/somewhere')
except OSError:
    pass

ASP.NET MVC JsonResult Date Format

I found that creating a new JsonResult and returning that is unsatisfactory - having to replace all calls to return Json(obj) with return new MyJsonResult { Data = obj } is a pain.

So I figured, why not just hijack the JsonResult using an ActionFilter:

public class JsonNetFilterAttribute : ActionFilterAttribute
{
    public override void OnActionExecuted(ActionExecutedContext filterContext)
    {
        if (filterContext.Result is JsonResult == false)
        {
            return;
        }

        filterContext.Result = new JsonNetResult(
            (JsonResult)filterContext.Result);
    }

    private class JsonNetResult : JsonResult
    {
        public JsonNetResult(JsonResult jsonResult)
        {
            this.ContentEncoding = jsonResult.ContentEncoding;
            this.ContentType = jsonResult.ContentType;
            this.Data = jsonResult.Data;
            this.JsonRequestBehavior = jsonResult.JsonRequestBehavior;
            this.MaxJsonLength = jsonResult.MaxJsonLength;
            this.RecursionLimit = jsonResult.RecursionLimit;
        }

        public override void ExecuteResult(ControllerContext context)
        {
            if (context == null)
            {
                throw new ArgumentNullException("context");
            }

            var isMethodGet = string.Equals(
                context.HttpContext.Request.HttpMethod,
                "GET",
                StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase);

            if (this.JsonRequestBehavior == JsonRequestBehavior.DenyGet
                && isMethodGet)
            {
                throw new InvalidOperationException(
                    "GET not allowed! Change JsonRequestBehavior to AllowGet.");
            }

            var response = context.HttpContext.Response;

            response.ContentType = string.IsNullOrEmpty(this.ContentType)
                ? "application/json"
                : this.ContentType;

            if (this.ContentEncoding != null)
            {
                response.ContentEncoding = this.ContentEncoding;
            }

            if (this.Data != null)
            {
                response.Write(JsonConvert.SerializeObject(this.Data));
            }
        }
    }
}

This can be applied to any method returning a JsonResult to use JSON.Net instead:

[JsonNetFilter]
public ActionResult GetJson()
{
    return Json(new { hello = new Date(2015, 03, 09) }, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet)
}

which will respond with

{"hello":"2015-03-09T00:00:00+00:00"}

as desired!

You can, if you don't mind calling the is comparison at every request, add this to your FilterConfig:

// ...
filters.Add(new JsonNetFilterAttribute());

and all of your JSON will now be serialized with JSON.Net instead of the built-in JavaScriptSerializer.

Moment get current date

Just call moment as a function without any arguments:

moment()

For timezone information with moment, look at the moment-timezone package: http://momentjs.com/timezone/

Pass a PHP string to a JavaScript variable (and escape newlines)

You can insert it into a hidden DIV, then assign the innerHTML of the DIV to your JavaScript variable. You don't have to worry about escaping anything. Just be sure not to put broken HTML in there.

A fatal error occurred while creating a TLS client credential. The internal error state is 10013

Basically we had to enable TLS 1.2 for .NET 4.x. Making this registry changed worked for me, and stopped the event log filling up with the Schannel error.

More information on the answer can be found here

Linked Info Summary

Enable TLS 1.2 at the system (SCHANNEL) level:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2]
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Client]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.2\Server]
"DisabledByDefault"=dword:00000000
"Enabled"=dword:00000001

(equivalent keys are probably also available for other TLS versions)

Tell .NET Framework to use the system TLS versions:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\.NETFramework\v4.0.30319]
"SystemDefaultTlsVersions"=dword:00000001
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\.NETFramework\v4.0.30319]
"SystemDefaultTlsVersions"=dword:00000001

This may not be desirable for edge cases where .NET Framework 4.x applications need to have different protocols enabled and disabled than the OS does.

SQL WHERE condition is not equal to?

WHERE id <> 2 should work fine...Is that what you are after?

What is the difference between "Class.forName()" and "Class.forName().newInstance()"?

In JDBC world, the normal practice (according the JDBC API) is that you use Class#forName() to load a JDBC driver. The JDBC driver should namely register itself in DriverManager inside a static block:

package com.dbvendor.jdbc;

import java.sql.Driver;
import java.sql.DriverManager;

public class MyDriver implements Driver {

    static {
        DriverManager.registerDriver(new MyDriver());
    }

    public MyDriver() {
        //
    }

}

Invoking Class#forName() will execute all static initializers. This way the DriverManager can find the associated driver among the registered drivers by connection URL during getConnection() which roughly look like follows:

public static Connection getConnection(String url) throws SQLException {
    for (Driver driver : registeredDrivers) {
        if (driver.acceptsURL(url)) {
            return driver.connect(url);
        }
    }
    throw new SQLException("No suitable driver");
}

But there were also buggy JDBC drivers, starting with the org.gjt.mm.mysql.Driver as well known example, which incorrectly registers itself inside the Constructor instead of a static block:

package com.dbvendor.jdbc;

import java.sql.Driver;
import java.sql.DriverManager;

public class BadDriver implements Driver {

    public BadDriver() {
        DriverManager.registerDriver(this);
    }

}

The only way to get it to work dynamically is to call newInstance() afterwards! Otherwise you will face at first sight unexplainable "SQLException: no suitable driver". Once again, this is a bug in the JDBC driver, not in your own code. Nowadays, no one JDBC driver should contain this bug. So you can (and should) leave the newInstance() away.

How to run the sftp command with a password from Bash script?

You have a few options other than using public key authentication:

  1. Use keychain
  2. Use sshpass (less secured but probably that meets your requirement)
  3. Use expect (least secured and more coding needed)

If you decide to give sshpass a chance here is a working script snippet to do so:

export SSHPASS=your-password-here
sshpass -e sftp -oBatchMode=no -b - sftp-user@remote-host << !
   cd incoming
   put your-log-file.log
   bye
!

How to trim white space from all elements in array?

Another java 8 lambda option :

String[] array2 = Arrays.stream(array).map(String::trim).toArray(String[]::new);

And the ugly but optimized version without new array creation

Arrays.stream(array).map(String::trim).toArray(unused -> array);

Original "array" is modified.

/exclude in xcopy just for a file type

The /EXCLUDE: argument expects a file containing a list of excluded files.

So create a file called excludedfileslist.txt containing:

.cs\

Then a command like this:

xcopy /r /d /i /s /y /exclude:excludedfileslist.txt C:\dev\apan C:\web\apan

Alternatively you could use Robocopy, but would require installing / copying a robocopy.exe to the machines.

Update

An anonymous comment edit which simply stated "This Solution exclude also css file!"

This is true creating a excludedfileslist.txt file contain just:

.cs

(note no backslash on the end)

Will also exclude all of the following:

  • file1.cs
  • file2.css
  • dir1.cs\file3.txt
  • dir2\anyfile.cs.something.txt

Sometimes people don't read or understand the XCOPY command's help, here is an item I would like to highlight:

Using /exclude

  • List each string in a separate line in each file. If any of the listed strings match any part of the absolute path of the file to be copied, that file is then excluded from the copying process. For example, if you specify the string "\Obj\", you exclude all files underneath the Obj directory. If you specify the string ".obj", you exclude all files with the .obj extension.

As the example states it excludes "all files with the .obj extension" but it doesn't state that it also excludes files or directories named file1.obj.tmp or dir.obj.output\example2.txt.

There is a way around .css files being excluded also, change the excludedfileslist.txt file to contain just:

.cs\

(note the backslash on the end).

Here is a complete test sequence for your reference:

How to export data to an excel file using PHPExcel

Try the below complete example for the same

<?php
  $objPHPExcel = new PHPExcel();
  $query1 = "SELECT * FROM employee";
  $exec1 = mysql_query($query1) or die ("Error in Query1".mysql_error());
  $serialnumber=0;
  //Set header with temp array
  $tmparray =array("Sr.Number","Employee Login","Employee Name");
  //take new main array and set header array in it.
  $sheet =array($tmparray);

  while ($res1 = mysql_fetch_array($exec1))
  {
    $tmparray =array();
    $serialnumber = $serialnumber + 1;
    array_push($tmparray,$serialnumber);
    $employeelogin = $res1['employeelogin'];
    array_push($tmparray,$employeelogin);
    $employeename = $res1['employeename'];
    array_push($tmparray,$employeename);
    array_push($sheet,$tmparray);
  }
   header('Content-type: application/vnd.ms-excel');
   header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="name.xlsx"');
  $worksheet = $objPHPExcel->getActiveSheet();

  $objPHPExcel->setActiveSheetIndex(0);
  $objWriter = PHPExcel_IOFactory::createWriter($objPHPExcel, 'Excel2007');
  $objWriter->save(str_replace('.php', '.xlsx', __FILE__));

Exclude subpackages from Spring autowiring?

I think you should refactor your packages in more convenient hierarchy, so they are out of the base package.

But if you can't do this, try:

<context:component-scan base-package="com.example">
    ...
    <context:exclude-filter type="regex" expression="com\.example\.ignore.*"/>
</context:component-scan>

Here you could find more examples: Using filters to customize scanning

Identifying and removing null characters in UNIX

I faced the same error with:

I solved the problem by changing the encoding to utf-16

f=cd.open(filePath,'r','utf-16')

How to filter object array based on attributes?

You can implement a filter method yourself that meets your needs, here is how:

function myfilter(array, test){
    var passedTest =[];
    for (var i = 0; i < array.length; i++) {
       if(test( array[i]))
          passedTest.push(array[i]);
    }

    return passedTest;
}

var passedHomes = myfilter(homes,function(currentHome){
     return ((currentHome.price <= 1000 )&& (currentHome.sqft >= 500 )&&(currentHome.num_of_beds >=2 )&&(currentHome.num_of_baths >= 2.5));
});

Hope, it helps!

Constructor in an Interface?

A work around you can try is defining a getInstance() method in your interface so the implementer is aware of what parameters need to be handled. It isn't as solid as an abstract class, but it allows more flexibility as being an interface.

However this workaround does require you to use the getInstance() to instantiate all objects of this interface.

E.g.

public interface Module {
    Module getInstance(Receiver receiver);
}

How to access the value of a promise?

How can I check if my Element ID has focus?

Compare document.activeElement with the element you want to check for focus. If they are the same, the element is focused; otherwise, it isn't.

// dummy element
var dummyEl = document.getElementById('myID');

// check for focus
var isFocused = (document.activeElement === dummyEl);

hasFocus is part of the document; there's no such method for DOM elements.

Also, document.getElementById doesn't use a # at the beginning of myID. Change this:

var dummyEl = document.getElementById('#myID');

to this:

var dummyEl = document.getElementById('myID');

If you'd like to use a CSS query instead you can use querySelector (and querySelectorAll).

How can I align all elements to the left in JPanel?

You should use setAlignmentX(..) on components you want to align, not on the container that has them..

JPanel panel = new JPanel();
panel.setLayout(new BoxLayout(panel, BoxLayout.Y_AXIS));
panel.add(c1);
panel.add(c2);

c1.setAlignmentX(Component.LEFT_ALIGNMENT);
c2.setAlignmentX(Component.LEFT_ALIGNMENT);

How to merge specific files from Git branches

Although not a merge per se, sometimes the entire contents of another file on another branch are needed. Jason Rudolph's blog post provides a simple way to copy files from one branch to another. Apply the technique as follows:

$ git checkout branch1 # ensure in branch1 is checked out and active
$ git checkout branch2 file.py

Now file.py is now in branch1.

Failed to load resource: net::ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND loading json.js

Same thing happened to me. Eventually my solution was to navigate to the repository using terminal (on mac) and create a new js file with a slightly different name. It linked immediately so i copied contents of original file to new one. You also might want to lose the first / after src= and use "".

What languages are Windows, Mac OS X and Linux written in?

The Linux kernel is mostly written in C (and a bit of assembly language, I'd imagine), but some of the important userspace utilities (programs) are shell scripts written in the Bash scripting language. Beyond that, it's sort of hard to define "Linux" since you basically build a Linux system by picking bits and pieces you want and putting them together, and depending on what an individual Linux user wants, you can get pretty much any language involved. (As Paul said, Python and C++ play important roles)

Run Command Prompt Commands

You can achieve this by using the following method (as mentioned in other answers):

strCmdText = "'/C some command";
Process.Start("CMD.exe", strCmdText);

When I tried the methods listed above I found that my custom command did not work using the syntax of some of the answers above.

I found out more complex commands need to be encapsulated in quotes to work:

string strCmdText;
strCmdText = "'/C cd " + path + " && composer update && composer install -o'";
Process.Start("CMD.exe", strCmdText);

How do I restrict a float value to only two places after the decimal point in C?

Also, if you're using C++, you can just create a function like this:

string prd(const double x, const int decDigits) {
    stringstream ss;
    ss << fixed;
    ss.precision(decDigits); // set # places after decimal
    ss << x;
    return ss.str();
}

You can then output any double myDouble with n places after the decimal point with code such as this:

std::cout << prd(myDouble,n);

Save child objects automatically using JPA Hibernate

I tried the above but I'm getting a database error complaining that the foreign key field in the Child table can not be NULL. Is there a way to tell JPA to automatically set this foreign key into the Child object so it can automatically save children objects?

Well, there are two things here.

First, you need to cascade the save operation (but my understanding is that you are doing this or you wouldn't get a FK constraint violation during inserts in the "child" table)

Second, you probably have a bidirectional association and I think that you're not setting "both sides of the link" correctly. You are supposed to do something like this:

Parent parent = new Parent();
...
Child c1 = new Child();
...
c1.setParent(parent);

List<Child> children = new ArrayList<Child>();
children.add(c1);
parent.setChildren(children);

session.save(parent);

A common pattern is to use link management methods:

@Entity
public class Parent {
    @Id private Long id;

    @OneToMany(mappedBy="parent")
    private List<Child> children = new ArrayList<Child>();

    ...

    protected void setChildren(List<Child> children) {
        this.children = children;
    }

    public void addToChildren(Child child) {
        child.setParent(this);
        this.children.add(child);
    }
}

And the code becomes:

Parent parent = new Parent();
...
Child c1 = new Child();
...

parent.addToChildren(c1);

session.save(parent);

C# Help reading foreign characters using StreamReader

Using Encoding.Unicode won't accurately decode an ANSI file in the same way that a JPEG decoder won't understand a GIF file.

I'm surprised that Encoding.Default didn't work for the ANSI file if it really was ANSI - if you ever find out exactly which code page Notepad was using, you could use Encoding.GetEncoding(int).

In general, where possible I'd recommend using UTF-8.

Replace one character with another in Bash

Use inline shell string replacement. Example:

foo="  "

# replace first blank only
bar=${foo/ /.}

# replace all blanks
bar=${foo// /.}

See http://tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/string-manipulation.html for more details.

The Use of Multiple JFrames: Good or Bad Practice?

I'm just wondering whether it is good practice to use multiple JFrames?

Bad (bad, bad) practice.

  • User unfriendly: The user sees multiple icons in their task bar when expecting to see only one. Plus the side effects of the coding problems..
  • A nightmare to code and maintain:
    • A modal dialog offers the easy opportunity to focus attention on the content of that dialog - choose/fix/cancel this, then proceed. Multiple frames do not.
    • A dialog (or floating tool-bar) with a parent will come to front when the parent is clicked on - you'd have to implement that in frames if that was the desired behavior.

There are any number of ways of displaying many elements in one GUI, e.g.:

  • CardLayout (short demo.). Good for:
    1. Showing wizard like dialogs.
    2. Displaying list, tree etc. selections for items that have an associated component.
    3. Flipping between no component and visible component.
  • JInternalFrame/JDesktopPane typically used for an MDI.
  • JTabbedPane for groups of components.
  • JSplitPane A way to display two components of which the importance between one or the other (the size) varies according to what the user is doing.
  • JLayeredPane far many well ..layered components.
  • JToolBar typically contains groups of actions or controls. Can be dragged around the GUI, or off it entirely according to user need. As mentioned above, will minimize/restore according to the parent doing so.
  • As items in a JList (simple example below).
  • As nodes in a JTree.
  • Nested layouts.

But if those strategies do not work for a particular use-case, try the following. Establish a single main JFrame, then have JDialog or JOptionPane instances appear for the rest of the free-floating elements, using the frame as the parent for the dialogs.

Many images

In this case where the multiple elements are images, it would be better to use either of the following instead:

  1. A single JLabel (centered in a scroll pane) to display whichever image the user is interested in at that moment. As seen in ImageViewer.
  2. A single row JList. As seen in this answer. The 'single row' part of that only works if they are all the same dimensions. Alternately, if you are prepared to scale the images on the fly, and they are all the same aspect ratio (e.g. 4:3 or 16:9).

How do I make a https post in Node Js without any third party module?

For example, like this:

  method: 'POST',
  headers: {
       'Content-Type': 'application/x-www-form-urlencoded',
       'Content-Length': postData.length
     }
};

var req = https.request(options, (res) => {
  console.log('statusCode:', res.statusCode);
  console.log('headers:', res.headers);

  res.on('data', (d) => {
    process.stdout.write(d);
  });
});

req.on('error', (e) => {
  console.error(e);
});

req.write(postData);

set column width of a gridview in asp.net

I know this is an old Question, but it popped up when I was looking for a solution to the same issue, so I thought that I would post what worked for me.

<asp:BoundField DataField="Description" HeaderText="Bond Event" ItemStyle-Width="300px" />

I used the ItemStyle-Width attribute on my BoundField and it worked very nicely I haven't had any issues yet.

I didn't need to add anything else to the rest of the code to make this work either.

SQL Switch/Case in 'where' clause

The problem with this is that when the SQL engine goes to evaluate the expression, it checks the FROM portion to pull the proper tables, and then the WHERE portion to provide some base criteria, so it cannot properly evaluate a dynamic condition on which column to check against.

You can use a WHERE clause when you're checking the WHERE criteria in the predicate, such as

WHERE account_location = CASE @locationType
                              WHEN 'business' THEN 45
                              WHEN 'area' THEN 52
                         END

so in your particular case, you're going to need put the query into a stored procedure or create three separate queries.

Show only two digit after decimal

First thing that should pop in a developer head while formatting a number into char sequence should be care of such details like do it will be possible to reverse the operation.

And other aspect is providing proper result. So you want to truncate the number or round it.

So before you start you should ask your self, am i interested on the value or not.

To achieve your goal you have multiple options but most of them refer to Format and Formatter, but i just suggest to look in this answer.

NameError: global name 'xrange' is not defined in Python 3

You are trying to run a Python 2 codebase with Python 3. xrange() was renamed to range() in Python 3.

Run the game with Python 2 instead. Don't try to port it unless you know what you are doing, most likely there will be more problems beyond xrange() vs. range().

For the record, what you are seeing is not a syntax error but a runtime exception instead.

If you do know what your are doing and are actively making a Python 2 codebase compatible with Python 3, you can bridge the code by adding the global name to your module as an alias for range. (Take into account that you may have to update any existing range() use in the Python 2 codebase with list(range(...)) to ensure you still get a list object in Python 3):

try:
    # Python 2
    xrange
except NameError:
    # Python 3, xrange is now named range
    xrange = range

# Python 2 code that uses xrange(...) unchanged, and any
# range(...) replaced with list(range(...))

or replace all uses of xrange(...) with range(...) in the codebase and then use a different shim to make the Python 3 syntax compatible with Python 2:

try:
    # Python 2 forward compatibility
    range = xrange
except NameError:
    pass

# Python 2 code transformed from range(...) -> list(range(...)) and
# xrange(...) -> range(...).

The latter is preferable for codebases that want to aim to be Python 3 compatible only in the long run, it is easier to then just use Python 3 syntax whenever possible.

How do you implement a re-try-catch?

Obligatory "enterprisy" solution:

public abstract class Operation {
    abstract public void doIt();
    public void handleException(Exception cause) {
        //default impl: do nothing, log the exception, etc.
    }
}

public class OperationHelper {
    public static void doWithRetry(int maxAttempts, Operation operation) {
        for (int count = 0; count < maxAttempts; count++) {
            try {
                operation.doIt();
                count = maxAttempts; //don't retry
            } catch (Exception e) {
                operation.handleException(e);
            }
        }
    }
}

And to call:

OperationHelper.doWithRetry(5, new Operation() {
    @Override public void doIt() {
        //do some stuff
    }
    @Override public void handleException(Exception cause) {
        //recover from the Exception
    }

Java 8 Stream and operation on arrays

You can turn an array into a stream by using Arrays.stream():

int[] ns = new int[] {1,2,3,4,5};
Arrays.stream(ns);

Once you've got your stream, you can use any of the methods described in the documentation, like sum() or whatever. You can map or filter like in Python by calling the relevant stream methods with a Lambda function:

Arrays.stream(ns).map(n -> n * 2);
Arrays.stream(ns).filter(n -> n % 4 == 0);

Once you're done modifying your stream, you then call toArray() to convert it back into an array to use elsewhere:

int[] ns = new int[] {1,2,3,4,5};
int[] ms = Arrays.stream(ns).map(n -> n * 2).filter(n -> n % 4 == 0).toArray();

Liquibase lock - reasons?

Sometimes if the update application is abruptly stopped, then the lock remains stuck.

Then running

UPDATE DATABASECHANGELOGLOCK SET LOCKED=0, LOCKGRANTED=null, LOCKEDBY=null where ID=1;

against the database helps.

You may also need to replace LOCKED=0 with LOCKED=FALSE.

Or you can simply drop the DATABASECHANGELOGLOCK table, it will be recreated.

Basically it just finds the "Compact and repair" menuitem and clicks it, programatically.

No 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header is present on the requested resource—when trying to get data from a REST API

Just my two cents... regarding How to use a CORS proxy to get around “No Access-Control-Allow-Origin header” problems

For those of you working with php at the backend, deploying a "CORS proxy" is as simple as:

  1. create a file named 'no-cors.php' with the following content:

    $URL = $_GET['url'];
    echo json_encode(file_get_contents($URL));
    die();

  2. on your front end, do something like:

    fetch('https://example.com/no-cors.php' + '?url=' + url)
      .then(response=>{*/Handle Response/*})`

iOS 6 apps - how to deal with iPhone 5 screen size?

I have just finished updating and sending an iOS 6.0 version of one of my Apps to the store. This version is backwards compatible with iOS 5.0, thus I kept the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: method and added the new ones as listed below.

I had to do the following:

Autorotation is changing in iOS 6. In iOS 6, the shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation: method of UIViewController is deprecated. In its place, you should use the supportedInterfaceOrientationsForWindow: and shouldAutorotate methods. Thus, I added these new methods (and kept the old for iOS 5 compatibility):

- (BOOL)shouldAutorotate {
    return YES;
}

- (NSUInteger)supportedInterfaceOrientations {
    return UIInterfaceOrientationMaskAllButUpsideDown;
}
  • Used the view controller’s viewWillLayoutSubviews method and adjust the layout using the view’s bounds rectangle.
  • Modal view controllers: The willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:duration:,
    willAnimateRotationToInterfaceOrientation:duration:, and
    didRotateFromInterfaceOrientation: methods are no longer called on any view controller that makes a full-screen presentation over
    itself
    —for example, presentViewController:animated:completion:.
  • Then I fixed the autolayout for views that needed it.
  • Copied images from the simulator for startup view and views for the iTunes store into PhotoShop and exported them as png files.
  • The name of the default image is: [email protected] and the size is 640×1136. It´s also allowed to supply 640×1096 for the same portrait mode (Statusbar removed). Similar sizes may also be supplied in landscape mode if your app only allows landscape orientation on the iPhone.
  • I have dropped backward compatibility for iOS 4. The main reason for that is because support for armv6 code has been dropped. Thus, all devices that I am able to support now (running armv7) can be upgraded to iOS 5.
  • I am also generation armv7s code to support the iPhone 5 and thus can not use any third party frameworks (as Admob etc.) until they are updated.

That was all but just remember to test the autorotation in iOS 5 and iOS 6 because of the changes in rotation.

How to skip a iteration/loop in while-loop

While you could use a continue, why not just inverse the logic in your if?

while(rs.next())

You don't even need an else {continue;} as it will continue anyway if the if conditions are not satisfied.

Benefits of inline functions in C++?

Advantages

  • By inlining your code where it is needed, your program will spend less time in the function call and return parts. It is supposed to make your code go faster, even as it goes larger (see below). Inlining trivial accessors could be an example of effective inlining.
  • By marking it as inline, you can put a function definition in a header file (i.e. it can be included in multiple compilation unit, without the linker complaining)

Disadvantages

  • It can make your code larger (i.e. if you use inline for non-trivial functions). As such, it could provoke paging and defeat optimizations from the compiler.
  • It slightly breaks your encapsulation because it exposes the internal of your object processing (but then, every "private" member would, too). This means you must not use inlining in a PImpl pattern.
  • It slightly breaks your encapsulation 2: C++ inlining is resolved at compile time. Which means that should you change the code of the inlined function, you would need to recompile all the code using it to be sure it will be updated (for the same reason, I avoid default values for function parameters)
  • When used in a header, it makes your header file larger, and thus, will dilute interesting informations (like the list of a class methods) with code the user don't care about (this is the reason that I declare inlined functions inside a class, but will define it in an header after the class body, and never inside the class body).

Inlining Magic

  • The compiler may or may not inline the functions you marked as inline; it may also decide to inline functions not marked as inline at compilation or linking time.
  • Inline works like a copy/paste controlled by the compiler, which is quite different from a pre-processor macro: The macro will be forcibly inlined, will pollute all the namespaces and code, won't be easily debuggable, and will be done even if the compiler would have ruled it as inefficient.
  • Every method of a class defined inside the body of the class itself is considered as "inlined" (even if the compiler can still decide to not inline it
  • Virtual methods are not supposed to be inlinable. Still, sometimes, when the compiler can know for sure the type of the object (i.e. the object was declared and constructed inside the same function body), even a virtual function will be inlined because the compiler knows exactly the type of the object.
  • Template methods/functions are not always inlined (their presence in an header will not make them automatically inline).
  • The next step after "inline" is template metaprograming . I.e. By "inlining" your code at compile time, sometimes, the compiler can deduce the final result of a function... So a complex algorithm can sometimes be reduced to a kind of return 42 ; statement. This is for me extreme inlining. It happens rarely in real life, it makes compilation time longer, will not bloat your code, and will make your code faster. But like the grail, don't try to apply it everywhere because most processing cannot be resolved this way... Still, this is cool anyway...
    :-p

How to generate range of numbers from 0 to n in ES2015 only?

Generators now allow you to generate the number sequence lazily and using less memory for large ranges.

While the question specifically states ES2015, I expect a lot of Typescript users will end up here and the conversion to ES is straightforward...

function range(end: number): IterableIterator<number>;
// tslint:disable-next-line:unified-signatures
function range(begin: number, end: number): IterableIterator<number>;

function *range(begin: number, end: number = NaN): IterableIterator<number> {
    let num = 0;
    if (isNaN(end)) {
        end = begin;
    } else {
        num = begin;
    }
    while (num < end) {
        yield num++;
    }
}

The first two function declarations are just to provide more informative completion suggestions in your IDE.

Convert String to double in Java

If you have problems in parsing string to decimal values, you need to replace "," in the number to "."

String number = "123,321";
double value = Double.parseDouble( number.replace(",",".") );

What is the reason for a red exclamation mark next to my project in Eclipse?

Isn´t it a strange behavior? In my case, the mistake was that I added a jar-lib. But this lib was faulty, so I removed the lib. But, no matter what I´ve done, the error still exists. I removed the jar-file, even with the eclipse option "remove from build-path", deleted it on my project-folders and cleaned my project, but nothing worked. Only after I´ve done the way Qwert has described, it worked. But sould an IDE not independent from error messages? The error was fixed, only the messages caused the problem. Thanks to Qwert (if I got enough reputations, I will vote your answer. But now I am not able to, sorry).

How to clear the cache of nginx?

There is one right method to remove only cache-files, which matches any KEY. For example:

grep -lr 'KEY: yahoo' /var/lib/nginx/cache | xargs rm -rf

This removes all cache-files, which matches to KEY "yahoo/*", if in nginx.conf was set:

proxy_cache_key $host$uri;

How to get Java Decompiler / JD / JD-Eclipse running in Eclipse Helios

I made the steps 1, 2, 3 and the 7. and I put the folder with the class files in the project build path (right click, properties, java build path, libraries, add class folder, create new folder, advanced>>, link to folder in the file system, browse,...) then restart eclipse.

How do I write a correct micro-benchmark in Java?

Make sure you somehow use results which are computed in benchmarked code. Otherwise your code can be optimized away.

Check time difference in Javascript

When i tried the difference between same time stamp it gave 0 Days 5 Hours 30 Minutes

so to get it exactly i have subtracted 5 hours and 30 min

function get_time_diff( datetime )
{
var datetime = typeof datetime !== 'undefined' ? datetime : "2014-01-01 01:02:03.123456";

var datetime = new Date(datetime).getTime();
var now = new Date().getTime();

if( isNaN(datetime) )
{
    return "";
}

console.log( datetime + " " + now);

if (datetime < now) {
    var milisec_diff = now - datetime;
}else{
    var milisec_diff = datetime - now;
}

var days = Math.floor(milisec_diff / 1000 / 60 / (60 * 24));

var date_diff = new Date( milisec_diff );

return days + "d "+ (date_diff.getHours() - 5) + "h " + (date_diff.getMinutes() - 30) + "m";
}

What's the idiomatic syntax for prepending to a short python list?

If someone finds this question like me, here are my performance tests of proposed methods:

Python 2.7.8

In [1]: %timeit ([1]*1000000).insert(0, 0)
100 loops, best of 3: 4.62 ms per loop

In [2]: %timeit ([1]*1000000)[0:0] = [0]
100 loops, best of 3: 4.55 ms per loop

In [3]: %timeit [0] + [1]*1000000
100 loops, best of 3: 8.04 ms per loop

As you can see, insert and slice assignment are as almost twice as fast than explicit adding and are very close in results. As Raymond Hettinger noted insert is more common option and I, personally prefer this way to prepend to list.

What is the difference between String and StringBuffer in Java?

A String is an immutable character array.

A StringBuffer is a mutable character array. Often converted back to String when done mutating.

Since both are an array, the maximum size for both is equal to the maximum size of an integer, which is 2^31-1 (see JavaDoc, also check out the JavaDoc for both String and StringBuffer).This is because the .length argument of an array is a primitive int. (See Arrays).

How to handle static content in Spring MVC?

Since I spent a lot of time on this issue, I thought I'd share my solution. Since spring 3.0.4, there is a configuration parameter that is called <mvc:resources/> (more about that on the reference documentation website) which can be used to serve static resources while still using the DispatchServlet on your site's root.

In order to use this, use a directory structure that looks like the following:

src/
 springmvc/
  web/
   MyController.java
WebContent/
  resources/
   img/
    image.jpg
  WEB-INF/
    jsp/
      index.jsp
    web.xml
    springmvc-servlet.xml

The contents of the files should look like:

src/springmvc/web/HelloWorldController.java:

package springmvc.web;

import org.springframework.stereotype.Controller;
import org.springframework.web.bind.annotation.RequestMapping;

@Controller
public class HelloWorldController {

 @RequestMapping(value="/")
 public String index() {
  return "index";
 }
}

WebContent/WEB-INF/web.xml:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>

 xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"

How to add action listener that listens to multiple buttons

First, exend JFrame properly with a super() and a constructor then add actionlisteners to the frame and add the buttons.

import java.awt.event.ActionEvent;
import java.awt.event.ActionListener;
import javax.swing.JButton;
import javax.swing.JFrame;

public class Calc extends JFrame implements ActionListener {
    JButton button1 = new JButton("1");
    JButton button2 = new JButton("2");

         setSize(100, 100);
         button1.addActionListener(this);
         button2.addActionListener(this);

        } else if(source == button2)
        {
            \\button2 code here
        }
    }
    public static void main(String[] args)
    {

        JFrame calcFrame = new JFrame();
        calcFrame.setVisible(true);

Div show/hide media query

I'm not sure, what you mean as the 'mobile width'. But in each case, the CSS @media can be used for hiding elements in the screen width basis. See some example:

<div id="my-content"></div>

...and:

@media screen and (min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 400px) {
  #my-content { display: block; }  /* show it on small screens */
}

@media screen and (min-width: 401px) and (max-width: 1024px) {
  #my-content { display: none; }   /* hide it elsewhere */
}

Some truly mobile detection is kind of hard programming and rather difficult. Eventually see the: http://detectmobilebrowsers.com/ or other similar sources.

socket.error: [Errno 48] Address already in use

You already have a process bound to the default port (8000). If you already ran the same module before, it is most likely that process still bound to the port. Try and locate the other process first:

$ ps -fA | grep python
  501 81651 12648   0  9:53PM ttys000    0:00.16 python -m SimpleHTTPServer

The command arguments are included, so you can spot the one running SimpleHTTPServer if more than one python process is active. You may want to test if http://localhost:8000/ still shows a directory listing for local files.

The second number is the process number; stop the server by sending it a signal:

kill 81651

This sends a standard SIGTERM signal; if the process is unresponsive you may have to resort to tougher methods like sending a SIGKILL (kill -s KILL <pid> or kill -9 <pid>) signal instead. See Wikipedia for more details.

Alternatively, run the server on a different port, by specifying the alternative port on the command line:

$ python -m SimpleHTTPServer 8910
Serving HTTP on 0.0.0.0 port 8910 ...

then access the server as http://localhost:8910; where 8910 can be any number from 1024 and up, provided the port is not already taken.

dropping infinite values from dataframes in pandas?

The above solution will modify the infs that are not in the target columns. To remedy that,

df.replace(to_replace, np.nan)

List and kill at jobs on UNIX

You should be able to find your command with a ps variant like:

ps -ef
ps -fubob # if your job's user ID is bob.

Then, once located, it should be a simple matter to use kill to kill the process (permissions permitting).

If you're talking about getting rid of jobs in the at queue (that aren't running yet), you can use atq to list them and atrm to get rid of them.

Mapping a JDBC ResultSet to an object

using DbUtils...

The only problem I had with that lib was that sometimes you have relationships in your bean classes, DBUtils does not map that. It only maps the properties in the class of the bean, if you have other complex properties (refering other beans due to DB relationship) you'd have to create "indirect setters" as I call, which are setters that put values into those complex properties's properties.

Refresh (reload) a page once using jQuery?

Yes, you can definitely do this. Just use something like

}

According to this page it's supported by all major browsers.

Send HTTP POST message in ASP.NET Core using HttpClient PostAsJsonAsync

You should add reference to "Microsoft.AspNet.WebApi.Client" package (read this article for samples).

Without any additional extension, you may use standard PostAsync method:

client.PostAsync(uri, new StringContent(jsonInString, Encoding.UTF8, "application/json"));

where jsonInString value you can get by calling JsonConvert.SerializeObject(<your object>);

Django: Model Form "object has no attribute 'cleaned_data'"

I would write the code like this:

def search_book(request):
    form = SearchForm(request.POST or None)
    if request.method == "POST" and form.is_valid():
        stitle = form.cleaned_data['title']
        sauthor = form.cleaned_data['author']
        scategory = form.cleaned_data['category']
        return HttpResponseRedirect('/thanks/')
    return render_to_response("books/create.html", {
        "form": form,
    }, context_instance=RequestContext(request))

Pretty much like the documentation.

Convert dataframe column to 1 or 0 for "true"/"false" values and assign to dataframe

Even when you asked finally for the opposite, to reform 0s and 1s into Trues and Falses, however, I post an answer about how to transform falses and trues into ones and zeros (1s and 0s), for a whole dataframe, in a single line.

Example given

df <- structure(list(p1_1 = c(TRUE, FALSE, FALSE, NA, TRUE, FALSE,
                NA), p1_2 = c(FALSE, TRUE, FALSE, NA, FALSE, NA,
                TRUE), p1_3 = c(TRUE,
                TRUE, FALSE, NA, NA, FALSE, TRUE), p1_4 = c(FALSE, NA,
                FALSE, FALSE, TRUE, FALSE, NA), p1_5 = c(TRUE, NA,
                FALSE, TRUE, FALSE, NA, TRUE), p1_6 = c(TRUE, NA,
                FALSE, TRUE, FALSE, NA, TRUE), p1_7 = c(TRUE, NA,
                FALSE, TRUE, NA, FALSE, TRUE), p1_8 = c(FALSE,
                FALSE, NA, FALSE, TRUE, FALSE, NA), p1_9 = c(TRUE,
                FALSE, NA, FALSE, FALSE, NA, TRUE), p1_10 = c(TRUE,
                FALSE, NA, FALSE, FALSE, NA, TRUE), p1_11 = c(FALSE,
                FALSE, NA, FALSE, NA, FALSE, TRUE)), .Names =
                c("p1_1", "p1_2", "p1_3", "p1_4", "p1_5", "p1_6",
                "p1_7", "p1_8", "p1_9", "p1_10", "p1_11"), row.names =
                 c(NA, -7L), class = "data.frame")

   p1_1  p1_2  p1_3  p1_4  p1_5  p1_6  p1_7  p1_8  p1_9 p1_10 p1_11
1 TRUE FALSE TRUE FALSE TRUE TRUE TRUE FALSE TRUE TRUE FALSE
2 FALSE TRUE TRUE NA NA NA NA FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE
3 FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE NA NA NA NA
4 NA NA NA FALSE TRUE TRUE TRUE FALSE FALSE FALSE FALSE
5 TRUE FALSE NA TRUE FALSE FALSE NA TRUE FALSE FALSE NA
6 FALSE NA FALSE FALSE NA NA FALSE FALSE NA NA FALSE
7 NA TRUE TRUE NA TRUE TRUE TRUE NA TRUE TRUE TRUE

Then by running that: df * 1 all Falses and Trues are trasnformed into 1s and 0s. At least, this was happen in the R version that I have (R version 3.4.4 (2018-03-15) ).

> df*1
  p1_1 p1_2 p1_3 p1_4 p1_5 p1_6 p1_7 p1_8 p1_9 p1_10 p1_11
1    1    0    1    0    1    1    1    0    1     1     0
2    0    1    1   NA   NA   NA   NA    0    0     0     0
3    0    0    0    0    0    0    0   NA   NA    NA    NA
4   NA   NA   NA    0    1    1    1    0    0     0     0
5    1    0   NA    1    0    0   NA    1    0     0    NA
6    0   NA    0    0   NA   NA    0    0   NA    NA     0
7   NA    1    1   NA    1    1    1   NA    1     1     1

I do not know if it a total "safe" command, under all different conditions / dfs.

Get elements by attribute when querySelectorAll is not available without using libraries?

Try this - I slightly changed the above answers:

var getAttributes = function(attribute) {
    var allElements = document.getElementsByTagName('*'),
        allElementsLen = allElements.length,
        curElement,
        i,
        results = [];

    for(i = 0; i < allElementsLen; i += 1) {
        curElement = allElements[i];

        if(curElement.getAttribute(attribute)) {
            results.push(curElement);
        }
    }

    return results;
};

Then,

getAttributes('data-foo');

How to use an environment variable inside a quoted string in Bash

Just a quick note/summary for any who came here via Google looking for the answer to the general question asked in the title (as I was). Any of the following should work for getting access to shell variables inside quotes:

echo "$VARIABLE"
echo "${VARIABLE}"

Use of single quotes is the main issue. According to the Bash Reference Manual:

Enclosing characters in single quotes (') preserves the literal value of each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash. [...] Enclosing characters in double quotes (") preserves the literal value of all characters within the quotes, with the exception of $, `, \, and, when history expansion is enabled, !. The characters $ and ` retain their special meaning within double quotes (see Shell Expansions). The backslash retains its special meaning only when followed by one of the following characters: $, `, ", \, or newline. Within double quotes, backslashes that are followed by one of these characters are removed. Backslashes preceding characters without a special meaning are left unmodified. A double quote may be quoted within double quotes by preceding it with a backslash. If enabled, history expansion will be performed unless an ! appearing in double quotes is escaped using a backslash. The backslash preceding the ! is not removed. The special parameters * and @ have special meaning when in double quotes (see Shell Parameter Expansion).

In the specific case asked in the question, $COLUMNS is a special variable which has nonstandard properties (see lhunath's answer above).

I suggest you step through the code in your debugger as debugging programs is what it is for.

What I would expect you would see is that every time the code loops int x = 0; is set.

Converting binary to decimal integer output

If you want/need to do it without int:

sum(int(c) * (2 ** i) for i, c in enumerate(s[::-1]))

This reverses the string (s[::-1]), gets each character c and its index i (for i, c in enumerate(), multiplies the integer of the character (int(c)) by two to the power of the index (2 ** i) then adds them all together (sum()).

Step1: In the sourcetree main window, locate your repo tab, and click the "terminal" button to open the git command console.

Step2:

[Situation A]: target commit is the latest one.

1) In the git command console, input

git commit --amend -m "new comment message"

2) If the target commit has been pushed to remote, you have to push again by force. In the git command console, input

git push --force

[Situation B]: target commit is not the latest one.

1) In the git command console, input

git rebase -i HEAD~n

It is to squash the latest n commits. e.g. if you want to edit the message before the last one, n is 2. This command will open a vi window, the first word of each line is "pick", and you change the "pick" to "reword" for the line you want to edit. Then, input :wq to save&quit that vi window. Now, a new vi window will be open, in this window you input your new message. Also use :wq to save&quit.

2) If the target commit has been pushed to remote, you have to push again by force. In the git command console, input

git push --force

Finally: In the sourcetree main window, Press F5 to refresh.

MySQL - Rows to Columns

I figure out one way to make my reports converting rows to columns almost dynamic using simple querys. You can see and test it online here.

The number of columns of query is fixed but the values are dynamic and based on values of rows. You can build it So, I use one query to build the table header and another one to see the values:

SELECT distinct concat('<th>',itemname,'</th>') as column_name_table_header FROM history order by 1;

SELECT
     hostid
    ,(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 0,1) then itemvalue else '' end) as col1
    ,(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 1,1) then itemvalue else '' end) as col2
    ,(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 2,1) then itemvalue else '' end) as col3
    ,(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 3,1) then itemvalue else '' end) as col4
FROM history order by 1;

You can summarize it, too:

SELECT
     hostid
    ,sum(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 0,1) then itemvalue end) as A
    ,sum(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 1,1) then itemvalue end) as B
    ,sum(case when itemname = (select distinct itemname from history a order by 1 limit 2,1) then itemvalue end) as C
FROM history group by hostid order by 1;
+--------+------+------+------+
| hostid | A    | B    | C    |
+--------+------+------+------+
|      1 |   10 |    3 | NULL |
|      2 |    9 | NULL |   40 |
+--------+------+------+------+

Maven and adding JARs to system scope

You will need to add the jar to your local maven repository. Alternatively (better option) specify the proper repository (if one exists) so it can be automatically downloaded by maven

In either case, remove the <systemPath> tag from the dependency

Is there a way to cache GitHub credentials for pushing commits?

Simply include the login credentials as part of the URL:

git remote rm origin
git remote add origin https://username:[email protected]/path/to/repo.git

Note: I do not recommend this method, but if you are in rush and nothing else works, you can use this method.

Why are my CSS3 media queries not working on mobile devices?

Throwing another answer into the ring. If you're trying to use CSS variables, then it will quietly fail.

@media screen and (max-device-width: var(--breakpoint-small)) {}

CSS variables don't work in media queries (by design).

Differences in string compare methods in C#

with .Equals, you also gain the StringComparison options. very handy for ignoring case and other things.

btw, this will evaluate to false

string a = "myString";
string b = "myString";

return a==b

Since == compares the values of a and b (which are pointers) this will only evaluate to true if the pointers point to the same object in memory. .Equals dereferences the pointers and compares the values stored at the pointers. a.Equals(b) would be true here.

and if you change b to:

b = "MYSTRING";

then a.Equals(b) is false, but

a.Equals(b, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase)

would be true

a.CompareTo(b) calls the string's CompareTo function which compares the values at the pointers and returns <0 if the value stored at a is less than the value stored at b, returns 0 if a.Equals(b) is true, and >0 otherwise. However, this is case sensitive, I think there are possibly options for CompareTo to ignore case and such, but don't have time to look now. As others have already stated, this would be done for sorting. Comparing for equality in this manner would result in unecessary overhead.

I'm sure I'm leaving stuff out, but I think this should be enough info to start experimenting if you need more details.

Pandas (python): How to add column to dataframe for index?

How about:

How do I disable a Button in Flutter?

For a specific and limited number of widgets, wrapping them in a widget IgnorePointer does exactly this: when its ignoring property is set to true, the sub-widget (actually, the entire subtree) is not clickable.

IgnorePointer(

    child: RaisedButton(
        onPressed: _logInWithFacebook,
        child: Text("Facebook sign-in"),
        ),
),

Otherwise, if you intend to disable an entire subtree, look into AbsorbPointer().

Looking at the output of the preprocessor is the closest thing to the answer you ask for.

MySQL export into outfile : CSV escaping chars

I think your statement should look like:

SELECT id,
   client,
   project,
   task,
   description,
   time,
   date
  INTO OUTFILE '/path/to/file.csv'
  FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"'
  LINES TERMINATED BY '\n'
  FROM ts

Mainly without the FIELDS ESCAPED BY '""' option, OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' will do the trick for description fields etc and your numbers will be treated as numbers in Excel (not strings comprising of numerics)

Also try calling:

SET NAMES utf8;

before your outfile select, that might help getting the character encodings inline (all UTF8)

Let us know how you get on.

JRE 1.7 - java version - returns: java/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object

If you install a 64-bit version without first installing 32-bit, this error will occur despite fixing all of the other issues. I have a brand new Dell i7 64-bit Windows 10 Pro machine running Java 8u71. After having added my %path% and %classpath% to environment variables and trying several other fixes, uninstalling 64-bit, installing 32-bit then reinstalling 64-bit fixed it.

Some of the issues, like not having your files unpacked, etc. that have been mentioned as possible causes may still be causing issues, but if you don't do this, as well, the other fixes won't work.

Correct way to initialize HashMap and can HashMap hold different value types?

A HashMap can hold any object as a value, even if it is another HashMap. Eclipse is suggesting that you declare the types because that is the recommended practice for Collections. under Java 5. You are free to ignore Eclipse's suggestions.

Under Java 5, an int (or any primitive type) will be autoboxed into an Integer (or other corresponding type) when you add it to a collection. Be careful with this though, as there are some catches to using autoboxing.

Attach the Source in Eclipse of a jar

Simply import the package of the required source class in your code from jar.

You can find jar's sub packages in

Eclipse -- YourProject --> Referenced libraries --> yourJars --> Packages --> Clases

Like-- I was troubling with the mysql connector jar issue "the source attachment does not contain the source" by giving the path of source folder it display this statement

The source attachment does not contain the source for the file StatementImpl.class

Then I just import the package of mysql connector jar which contain the required class:

import com.mysql.jdbc.*;

Then program is working fine.

Nullable DateTime conversion

Cast the null literal: (DateTime?)null or (Nullable<DateTime>)null.

You can also use default(DateTime?) or default(Nullable<DateTime>)

And, as other answers have noted, you can also apply the cast to the DateTime value rather than to the null literal.

EDIT (adapted from my comment to Prutswonder's answer):

The point is that the conditional operator does not consider the type of its assignment target, so it will only compile if there is an implicit conversion from the type of its second operand to the type of its third operand, or from the type of its third operand to the type of its second operand.

For example, this won't compile:

bool b = GetSomeBooleanValue();
object o = b ? "Forty-two" : 42;

Casting either the second or third operand to object, however, fixes the problem, because there is an implicit conversion from int to object and also from string to object:

object o = b ? "Forty-two" : (object)42;

or

object o = b ? (object)"Forty-two" : 42;

Bad operand type for unary +: 'str'

The code works for me. (after adding missing except clause / import statements)

Did you put \ in the original code?

urlToVisit = 'http://chartapi.finance.yahoo.com/instrument/1.0/' \
              + stock + '/chartdata;type=quote;range=5d/csv'

If you omit it, it could be a cause of the exception:

>>> stock = 'GOOG'
>>> urlToVisit = 'http://chartapi.finance.yahoo.com/instrument/1.0/'
>>> + stock + '/chartdata;type=quote;range=5d/csv'
Traceback (most recent call last):

BTW, string(e) should be str(e).

How to tell a Mockito mock object to return something different the next time it is called?

You could also Stub Consecutive Calls (#10 in 2.8.9 api). In this case, you would use multiple thenReturn calls or one thenReturn call with multiple parameters (varargs).

import static org.junit.Assert.assertEquals;
import static org.mockito.Mockito.mock;
import static org.mockito.Mockito.when;

import org.junit.Before;
import org.junit.Test;

public class TestClass {

    private Foo mockFoo;

    @Before
    public void setup() {
        setupFoo();
    }

    @Test
    public void testFoo() {
        TestObject testObj = new TestObject(mockFoo);

        assertEquals(0, testObj.bar());
        assertEquals(1, testObj.bar());
        assertEquals(-1, testObj.bar());
        assertEquals(-1, testObj.bar());
    }

    private void setupFoo() {
        mockFoo = mock(Foo.class);

        when(mockFoo.someMethod())
            .thenReturn(0)
            .thenReturn(1)
            .thenReturn(-1); //any subsequent call will return -1

        // Or a bit shorter with varargs:
        when(mockFoo.someMethod())
            .thenReturn(0, 1, -1); //any subsequent call will return -1
    }
}

Using Keras & Tensorflow with AMD GPU

This is an old question, but since I spent the last few weeks trying to figure it out on my own:

  1. OpenCL support for Theano is hit and miss. They added a libgpuarray back-end which appears to still be buggy (i.e., the process runs on the GPU but the answer is wrong--like 8% accuracy on MNIST for a DL model that gets ~95+% accuracy on CPU or nVidia CUDA). Also because ~50-80% of the performance boost on the nVidia stack comes from the CUDNN libraries now, OpenCL will just be left in the dust. (SEE BELOW!) :)
  2. ROCM appears to be very cool, but the documentation (and even a clear declaration of what ROCM is/what it does) is hard to understand. They're doing their best, but they're 4+ years behind. It does NOT NOT NOT work on an RX550 (as of this writing). So don't waste your time (this is where 1 of the weeks went :) ). At first, it appears ROCM is a new addition to the driver set (replacing AMDGPU-Pro, or augmenting it), but it is in fact a kernel module and set of libraries that essentially replace AMDGPU-Pro. (Think of this as the equivalent of Nvidia-381 driver + CUDA some libraries kind of). https://rocm.github.io/dl.html (Honestly I still haven't tested the performance or tried to get it to work with more recent Mesa drivers yet. I will do that sometime.
  3. Add MiOpen to ROCM, and that is essentially CUDNN. They also have some pretty clear guides for migrating. But better yet.
  4. They created "HIP" which is an automagical translator from CUDA/CUDNN to MiOpen. It seems to work pretty well since they lined the API's up directly to be translatable. There are concepts that aren't perfect maps, but in general it looks good.

Now, finally, after 3-4 weeks of trying to figure out OpenCL, etc, I found this tutorial to help you get started quickly. It is a step-by-step for getting hipCaffe up and running. Unlike nVidia though, please ensure you have supported hardware!!!! https://rocm.github.io/hardware.html. Think you can get it working without their supported hardware? Good luck. You've been warned. Once you have ROCM up and running (AND RUN THE VERIFICATION TESTS), here is the hipCaffe tutorial--if you got ROCM up you'll be doing an MNIST validation test within 10 minutes--sweet! https://rocm.github.io/ROCmHipCaffeQuickstart.html

What is the apply function in Scala?

Mathematicians have their own little funny ways, so instead of saying "then we call function f passing it x as a parameter" as we programmers would say, they talk about "applying function f to its argument x".

In mathematics and computer science, Apply is a function that applies functions to arguments.
Wikipedia

apply serves the purpose of closing the gap between Object-Oriented and Functional paradigms in Scala. Every function in Scala can be represented as an object. Every function also has an OO type: for instance, a function that takes an Int parameter and returns an Int will have OO type of Function1[Int,Int].

 // define a function in scala
 (x:Int) => x + 1

 // assign an object representing the function to a variable
 val f = (x:Int) => x + 1

Since everything is an object in Scala f can now be treated as a reference to Function1[Int,Int] object. For example, we can call toString method inherited from Any, that would have been impossible for a pure function, because functions don't have methods:

  f.toString

Or we could define another Function1[Int,Int] object by calling compose method on f and chaining two different functions together:

 val f2 = f.compose((x:Int) => x - 1)

Now if we want to actually execute the function, or as mathematician say "apply a function to its arguments" we would call the apply method on the Function1[Int,Int] object:

 f2.apply(2)

Writing f.apply(args) every time you want to execute a function represented as an object is the Object-Oriented way, but would add a lot of clutter to the code without adding much additional information and it would be nice to be able to use more standard notation, such as f(args). That's where Scala compiler steps in and whenever we have a reference f to a function object and write f (args) to apply arguments to the represented function the compiler silently expands f (args) to the object method call f.apply (args).

Every function in Scala can be treated as an object and it works the other way too - every object can be treated as a function, provided it has the apply method. Such objects can be used in the function notation:

// we will be able to use this object as a function, as well as an object
object Foo {
  var y = 5
  def apply (x: Int) = x + y
}

Foo (1) // using Foo object in function notation

There are many usage cases when we would want to treat an object as a function. The most common scenario is a factory pattern. Instead of adding clutter to the code using a factory method we can apply object to a set of arguments to create a new instance of an associated class:

List(1,2,3) // same as List.apply(1,2,3) but less clutter, functional notation

// the way the factory method invocation would have looked
// in other languages with OO notation - needless clutter
List.instanceOf(1,2,3)

So apply method is just a handy way of closing the gap between functions and objects in Scala.

Is background-color:none valid CSS?

No, use transparent instead none . See working example here in this example if you will change transparent to none it will not work

use like .class { background-color:transparent; }

Where .class is what you will name your transparent class.

CSS Input field text color of inputted text

Change your second style to this:

input, select, textarea{
    color: #ff0000;
}

At the moment, you are telling the form to change the text to black once the focus is off. The above remedies that.

Also, it is a good idea to place the normal state styles ahead of the :focus and :hover styles in your stylesheet. That helps prevent this problem. So

input, select, textarea{
    color: #ff0000;
}

textarea:focus, input:focus {
    color: #ff0000;
}

Junit - run set up method once

When setUp() is in a superclass of the test class (e.g. AbstractTestBase below), the accepted answer can be modified as follows:

public abstract class AbstractTestBase {
    private static Class<? extends AbstractTestBase> testClass;
    .....
    public void setUp() {
        if (this.getClass().equals(testClass)) {
            return;
        }

        // do the setup - once per concrete test class
        .....
        testClass = this.getClass();
    }
}

This should work for a single non-static setUp() method but I'm unable to produce an equivalent for tearDown() without straying into a world of complex reflection... Bounty points to anyone who can!

Define: What is a HashSet?

A HashSet has an internal structure (hash), where items can be searched and identified quickly. The downside is that iterating through a HashSet (or getting an item by index) is rather slow.

So why would someone want be able to know if an entry already exists in a set?

One situation where a HashSet is useful is in getting distinct values from a list where duplicates may exist. Once an item is added to the HashSet it is quick to determine if the item exists (Contains operator).

Other advantages of the HashSet are the Set operations: IntersectWith, IsSubsetOf, IsSupersetOf, Overlaps, SymmetricExceptWith, UnionWith.

If you are familiar with the object constraint language then you will identify these set operations. You will also see that it is one step closer to an implementation of executable UML.

maven... Failed to clean project: Failed to delete ..\org.ow2.util.asm-asm-tree-3.1.jar

Your problem is that a running process within STS is using files located in your target directory while you execute a mvn clean command. Maven will be unable to delete these files (since other processes are still accessing them) and thus fail with that error.

Try to stop all processes (tests, servers, applications) from within STS before running Maven console commands. Look out: This behaviour might also appear if STS is cleaning up the projects and thus re-compiles the sources, and not running a process.

How to determine SSL cert expiration date from a PEM encoded certificate?

If you just want to know whether the certificate has expired (or will do so within the next N seconds), the -checkend <seconds> option to openssl x509 will tell you:

if openssl x509 -checkend 86400 -noout -in file.pem
then
  echo "Certificate is good for another day!"
else
  echo "Certificate has expired or will do so within 24 hours!"
  echo "(or is invalid/not found)"
fi

This saves having to do date/time comparisons yourself.

openssl will return an exit code of 0 (zero) if the certificate has not expired and will not do so for the next 86400 seconds, in the example above. If the certificate will have expired or has already done so - or some other error like an invalid/nonexistent file - the return code is 1.

(Of course, it assumes the time/date is set correctly)

Be aware that older versions of openssl have a bug which means if the time specified in checkend is too large, 0 will always be returned (https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/6180).

Find all files in a directory with extension .txt in Python

I did a test (Python 3.6.4, W7x64) to see which solution is the fastest for one folder, no subdirectories, to get a list of complete file paths for files with a specific extension.

To make it short, for this task os.listdir() is the fastest and is 1.7x as fast as the next best: os.walk() (with a break!), 2.7x as fast as pathlib, 3.2x faster than os.scandir() and 3.3x faster than glob.
Please keep in mind, that those results will change when you need recursive results. If you copy/paste one method below, please add a .lower() otherwise .EXT would not be found when searching for .ext.

import os
import pathlib
import timeit
import glob

def a():

How do I move a redis database from one server to another?

The simple way I found to export / Backup Redis data (create dump file ) is to start up a server via command line with slaveof flag and create live replica as follow (assuming the source Redis is 1.2.3.4 on port 6379):

    width: 50%;
    margin-right: -50%;

example: https://jsfiddle.net/gzveri/o6umhj53/

btw, this approach works for any 2 nearby elements in a long list of elements. For example I have a long list of elements with 2 items per row and I want each 3-rd and 4-th element in the list to be swapped, so that it renders elements in a chess style, then I use these rules:

  .parent > div:nth-child(4n+3) {
    margin-right: -50%;
    margin-left: 50%;
  }
  .parent > div:nth-child(4n+4) {
    margin-right: 50%;
    margin-left: -50%;
  }

How to copy and paste worksheets between Excel workbooks?

To be honest I don't know that you can. If you just set up a test instance and open Excel twice, because that is what you are talking about happening, if you name one workbook "test1" and another "test2" if you try to move a workbook, or even a worksheet between the two applications they are totally unaware of each other. I also notice odd behavior while simply manually cutting and pasting from Excel instance 1 and Excel instance 2.

You may have to write two macros kind of a drop off and then a pick up from a location that you share between them. Maybe a command button on the tool bar.

Maybe one of the super excel guys on here have a better answer.

Getting PEAR to work on XAMPP (Apache/MySQL stack on Windows)

AS per point 1, your PEAR path is c:\xampplite\php\pear\

However, your path is pointing to \xampplite\php\pear\PEAR

Putting the two one above the other you can clearly see one is too long:

c:\xampplite\php\pear\

\xampplite\php\pear\PEAR

Your include path is set to go one PEAR too deep into the pear tree. The PEAR subfolder of the pear folder includes the PEAR component. You need to adjust your include path up one level.

(you don't need the c: by the way, your path is fine as is, just too deep)

Does MySQL ignore null values on unique constraints?

A simple answer would be : No, it doesn't

Explanation : According to the definition of unique constraints (SQL-92)

A unique constraint is satisfied if and only if no two rows in a table have the same non-null values in the unique columns

This statement can have two interpretations as :

  • No two rows can have same values i.e. NULL and NULL is not allowed
  • No two non-null rows can have values i.e NULL and NULL is fine, but StackOverflow and StackOverflow is not allowed

Since MySQL follows second interpretation, multiple NULL values are allowed in UNIQUE constraint column. Second, if you would try to understand the concept of NULL in SQL, you will find that two NULL values can be compared at all since NULL in SQL refers to unavailable or unassigned value (you can't compare nothing with nothing). Now, if you are not allowing multiple NULL values in UNIQUE constraint column, you are contracting the meaning of NULL in SQL. I would summarise my answer by saying :

MySQL supports UNIQUE constraint but not on the cost of ignoring NULL values

PHP - print all properties of an object

try using Pretty Dump it works great for me

C++ error: "Array must be initialized with a brace enclosed initializer"

The syntax to statically initialize an array uses curly braces, like this:

int array[10] = { 0 };

This will zero-initialize the array.

For multi-dimensional arrays, you need nested curly braces, like this:

int cipher[Array_size][Array_size]= { { 0 } };

Note that Array_size must be a compile-time constant for this to work. If Array_size is not known at compile-time, you must use dynamic initialization. (Preferably, an std::vector).

How to check if a specified key exists in a given S3 bucket using Java

Break your path into bucket and object. Testing the bucket using the method doesBucketExist, Testing the object using the size of the listing (0 in case not exist). So this code will do:

String bucket = ...;
String objectInBucket = ...;
AmazonS3 s3 = new AmazonS3Client(...);
return s3.doesBucketExist(bucket)
       && !s3.listObjects(bucket, objectInBucket).getObjectSummaries().isEmpty();

Inserting the same value multiple times when formatting a string

You can use the dictionary type of formatting:

s='arbit'
string='%(key)s hello world %(key)s hello world %(key)s' % {'key': s,}

How to count the number of occurrences of an element in a List

This shows, why it is important to "Refer to objects by their interfaces" as described in Effective Java book.

If you code to the implementation and use ArrayList in let's say, 50 places in your code, when you find a good "List" implementation that count the items, you will have to change all those 50 places, and probably you'll have to break your code ( if it is only used by you there is not a big deal, but if it is used by someone else uses, you'll break their code too)

By programming to the interface you can let those 50 places unchanged and replace the implementation from ArrayList to "CountItemsList" (for instance ) or some other class.

Below is a very basic sample on how this could be written. This is only a sample, a production ready List would be much more complicated.

import java.util.*;

public class CountItemsList<E> extends ArrayList<E> {

    // This is private. It is not visible from outside.
    private Map<E,Integer> count = new HashMap<E,Integer>();

    // There are several entry points to this class
    // this is just to show one of them.
    public boolean add( E element  ) {
        if( !count.containsKey( element ) ){
            count.put( element, 1 );
        } else {
            count.put( element, count.get( element ) + 1 );
        }
        return super.add( element );
    }

    // This method belongs to CountItemList interface ( or class )
    // to used you have to cast.
    public int getCount( E element ) {
        if( ! count.containsKey( element ) ) {
            return 0;
        }
        return count.get( element );
    }

    public static void main( String [] args ) {
        List<String> animals = new CountItemsList<String>();
        animals.add("bat");
        animals.add("owl");
        animals.add("bat");
        animals.add("bat");

        System.out.println( (( CountItemsList<String> )animals).getCount( "bat" ));
    }
}

OO principles applied here: inheritance, polymorphism, abstraction, encapsulation.
