What are DDL and DML?

DDL is Data Definition Language: Just think you are defining the DB. So we use CREATE,ALTER TRUNCATE commands.
DML is after defining we are Manipulating the data. So we use SELECT,INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE command.

Remember DDL commands are auto-committed. You don't need to use COMMIT statements.

Sometimes, even after converting to single user mode, the only connection allowed to the database may be in use.

How does setTimeout work in Node.JS?

The idea of non-blocking is that the loop iterations are quick. So to iterate for each tick should take short enough a time that the setTimeout will be accurate to within reasonable precision (off by maybe <100 ms or so).

In theory though you're right. If I write an application and block the tick, then setTimeouts will be delayed. So to answer you're question, who can assure setTimeouts execute on time? You, by writing non-blocking code, can control the degree of accuracy up to almost any reasonable degree of accuracy.

As long as javascript is "single-threaded" in terms of code execution (excluding web-workers and the like), that will always happen. The single-threaded nature is a huge simplification in most cases, but requires the non-blocking idiom to be successful.

Try this code out either in your browser or in node, and you'll see that there is no guarantee of accuracy, on the contrary, the setTimeout will be very late:

SQL Server error on update command - "A severe error occurred on the current command"

One other possible solution we just found after having this issue across multiple databases/tables on the same server.

Is the max connections open to the sql server. We had an app that wasn't closing it's SQL connection and was leaving them open so we were running around 28K-31K connections (SQL Sever has a max out at 32K ish), and we noticed that once we killed a few thousand sleeping connections it took care of the error listed on this question.

The fix was to update the apps to make sure they closed their connections instead of leaving them open.

ERROR – something terribly wrong had happened, that must be investigated immediately. No system can tolerate items logged on this level. Example: NPE, database unavailable, mission critical use case cannot be continued.

WARN – the process might be continued, but take extra caution. Actually I always wanted to have two levels here: one for obvious problems where work-around exists (for example: “Current data unavailable, using cached values”) and second (name it: ATTENTION) for potential problems and suggestions. Example: “Application running in development mode” or “Administration console is not secured with a password”. The application can tolerate warning messages, but they should always be justified and examined.

INFO – Important business process has finished. In ideal world, administrator or advanced user should be able to understand INFO messages and quickly find out what the application is doing. For example if an application is all about booking airplane tickets, there should be only one INFO statement per each ticket saying “[Who] booked ticket from [Where] to [Where]“. Other definition of INFO message: each action that changes the state of the application significantly (database update, external system request).

DEBUG – Developers stuff. I will discuss later what sort of information deserves to be logged.

TRACE – Very detailed information, intended only for development. You might keep trace messages for a short period of time after deployment on production environment, but treat these log statements as temporary, that should or might be turned-off eventually. The distinction between DEBUG and TRACE is the most difficult, but if you put logging statement and remove it after the feature has been developed and tested, it should probably be on TRACE level.

How to deploy correctly when using Composer's develop / production switch?

On production servers I rename vendor to vendor-<datetime>, and during deployment will have two vendor dirs.

A HTTP cookie causes my system to choose the new vendor autoload.php, and after testing I do a fully atomic/instant switch between them to disable the old vendor dir for all future requests, then I delete the previous dir a few days later.

This avoids any problem caused by filesystem caches I'm using in apache/php, and also allows any active PHP code to continue using the previous vendor dir.


Despite other answers recommending against it, I personally run composer install on the server, since this is faster than rsync from my staging area (a VM on my laptop).

I use --no-dev --no-scripts --optimize-autoloader. You should read the docs for each one to check if this is appropriate on your environment.

Random float number generation

drand48(3) is the POSIX standard way. GLibC also provides a reentrant version, drand48_r(3).

The function was declared obsolete in SVID 3 but no adequate alternative was provided so IEEE Std 1003.1-2013 still includes it and has no notes that it's going anywhere anytime soon.

In Windows, the standard way is CryptGenRandom().

Read-Only Computed Properties

A computed property with a getter but no setter is known as a read-only computed property. A read-only computed property always returns a value, and can be accessed through dot syntax, but cannot be set to a different value.

Note:

You must declare computed properties—including read-only computed properties—as variable properties with the var keyword, because their value is not fixed. The let keyword is only used for constant properties, to indicate that their values cannot be changed once they are set as part of instance initialization.

You can simplify the declaration of a read-only computed property by removing the get keyword and its braces:

The approach I suggest works like the following. First, you create a basic datetime object from a mysql-formatted string; and then you format it the way you like. Luckily, mysql datetime is ISO8601-compliant, so the code itself could look quite simple and elegant. Keep in mind though that datetime column doesn't have a timezone information, so you need to convert it appropriately.

Here's the code:

If std::vector has size equal to std::numeric_limits<size_t>::max(), then maximum allowed index will be (std::numeric_limits<size_t>::max()-1), since elements counted from 0.

I can't say I need this very often - could you give more details as to why you want this? I'd probably put it as a static method in a helper class:

EDIT: As noted in comments, you could make Repeated use a loop to populate the list if you wanted to. That would be slightly faster too. Personally I find the code using Repeat more descriptive, and suspect that in the real world the performance difference would be irrelevant, but your mileage may vary.

From the perspective of the C language, all that matters is extent, scope, linkage, and access; exactly how items are mapped to different memory segments is up to the individual implementation, and that will vary. The language standard doesn't talk about memory segments at all. Most modern architectures act mostly the same way; block-scope variables and function arguments will be allocated from the stack, file-scope and static variables will be allocated from a data or code segment, dynamic memory will be allocated from a heap, some constant data will be stored in read-only segments, etc.

The longer answer:

The change event handler isn't called until the checked state has been updated (live example | source), but because (as Tim Büthe points out in the comments) IE doesn't fire the change event until the checkbox loses focus, you don't get the notification proactively. Worse, with IE if you click a label for the checkbox (rather than the checkbox itself) to update it, you can get the impression that you're getting the old value (try it with IE here by clicking the label: live example | source). This is because if the checkbox has focus, clicking the label takes the focus away from it, firing the change event with the old value, and then the click happens setting the new value and setting focus back on the checkbox. Very confusing.

But you can avoid all of that unpleasantness if you use click instead.

I've used DOM0 handlers (onxyz attributes) because that's what you asked about, but for the record, I would generally recommend hooking up handlers in code (DOM2's addEventListener, or attachEvent in older versions of IE) rather than using onxyz attributes. That lets you attach multiple handlers to the same element and lets you avoid making all of your handlers global functions.

How and where to use ::ng-deep?

Make sure not to miss the explanation of :host-context which is directly above ::ng-deep in the angular guide : https://angular.io/guide/component-styles. I missed it up until now and wish I'd seen it sooner.

::ng-deep is often necessary when you didn't write the component and don't have access to its source, but :host-context can be a very useful option when you do.

For example I have a black <h1> header inside a component I designed, and I want the ability to change it to white when it's displayed on a dark themed background.

If I didn't have access to the source I may have to do this in the css for the parent:

But instead with :host-context you can do this inside the component.

This will look anywhere in the component chain for .theme-dark and apply the css to the h1 if found. This is a good alternative to relying too much on ::ng-deep which while often necessary is somewhat of an anti-pattern.

In this case the & is replaced by the h1 (that's how sass/scss works) so you can define your 'normal' and themed/alternative css right next to each other which is very handy.

Be careful to get the correct number of :. For ::ng-deep there are two and for :host-context only one.

What exactly is nullptr?

Why nullptr in C++11? What is it? Why is NULL not sufficient?

C++ expert Alex Allain says it perfectly here (my emphasis added in bold):

...imagine you have the following two function declarations:

void func(int n); 
void func(char *s);

func( NULL ); // guess which function gets called?

Although it looks like the second function will be called--you are, after all, passing in what seems to be a pointer--it's really the first function that will be called! The trouble is that because NULL is 0, and 0 is an integer, the first version of func will be called instead. This is the kind of thing that, yes, doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen, is extremely frustrating and confusing. If you didn't know the details of what is going on, it might well look like a compiler bug. A language feature that looks like a compiler bug is, well, not something you want.

Enter nullptr. In C++11, nullptr is a new keyword that can (and should!) be used to represent NULL pointers; in other words, wherever you were writing NULL before, you should use nullptr instead. It's no more clear to you, the programmer, (everyone knows what NULL means), but it's more explicit to the compiler, which will no longer see 0s everywhere being used to have special meaning when used as a pointer.

Allain ends his article with:

Regardless of all this--the rule of thumb for C++11 is simply to start using nullptr whenever you would have otherwise used NULL in the past.

(My words):

Lastly, don't forget that nullptr is an object--a class. It can be used anywhere NULL was used before, but if you need its type for some reason, it's type can be extracted with decltype(nullptr), or directly described as std::nullptr_t, which is simply a typedef of decltype(nullptr).

It is not good practice to hard code strings into your layout files/ code. You should add them to a string resource file and then reference them from your layout.

  1. This allows you to update every occurrence of the same word in all
    layouts at the same time by just editing your strings.xml file.
  2. It is also extremely useful for supporting multiple languages as a separate strings.xml file can be used for each supported language
  3. the actual point of having the @string system please read over the localization documentation. It allows you to easily locate text in your app and later have it translated.
  4. Strings can be internationalized easily, allowing your application to support multiple languages with a single application package file (APK).

Benefits

  • Lets say you used same string in 10 different locations in the code. What if you decide to alter it? Instead of searching for where all it has been used in the project you just change it once and changes are reflected everywhere in the project.

Because the people who created Java wanted boolean to mean unambiguously true or false, not 1 or 0.

There's no consensus among languages about how 1 and 0 convert to booleans. C uses any nonzero value to mean true and 0 to mean false, but some UNIX shells do the opposite. Using ints weakens type-checking, because the compiler can't guard against cases where the int value passed in isn't something that should be used in a boolean context.

How to create an AVD for Android 4.0

You can also get this problem if you have your Android SDK version controlled. You get a slightly different error:

Unable to find a 'userdata.img' file for ABI .svn to copy into the AVD folder.

For some reason, the Android Virtual Device (AVD) manager believes the .svn folder is specifying an application binary interface (ABI). It looks for userdata.img within the .svn folder and can't find it, so it fails.

I used the shell extension found in the responses for the Stack Overflow question Removing .svn files from all directories to remove all .svn folders recursively from the android-sdk folder. After this, the AVD manager was able to create an AVD successfully. I have yet to figure out how to get the SDK to play nicely with Subversion.

Combating AngularJS executing controller twice

In my case it was because of the url pattern I used

my url was like /ui/project/:parameter1/:parameter2.

I didn't need paramerter2 in all cases of state change. In cases where I didn't need the second parameter my url would be like /ui/project/:parameter1/. And so whenever I had a state change I will have my controller refreshed twice.

The solution was to set parameter2 as empty string and do the state change.

UPDATE: @RBz asked for detailed explanation so here it is. Basically flatMap puts all elements from streams inside another stream into output stream. A lot of streams here :). So, for each Task in initial stream lambda expression x -> LongStream.iterate... creates a stream of long values that represent task start moments. This stream is limited to x.getRepeatCount() instances. It's values start from x.getStart().toEpochSecond(ZoneOffset.UTC) and each next value is calculated using lambda p -> (p + x.getRepeatPeriod()*x.getRepeatUnit().getDuration().getSeconds(). boxed() returns the stream with each long value as a Long wrapper instance. Then each Long in that stream is mapped to new Task instance that is not repetitive anymore and contains exact execution time. This sample contains only one Task in input list. But imagine that you have a thousand. You will have then a stream of 1000 streams of Task objects. And what flatMap does here is putting all Tasks from all streams onto the same output stream. That's all as I understand it. Thank you for your question!

1) Open android studio, go to preferences by clicking on the top left 'Android Studio'

2) Search for 'avd' in the search bar. You'll see 'AVD Manager' in search results. It will be under 'Tools' folder.

3) Click on it and it will ask you to set up a short cut. Set it up. Say for example use 'V' as a shortcut.

4) Now open android studio and create a new project. After the project is created, press your shortcut that you had set. Like 'V' in our case. It will open the 'Virtual Devices Screen'

Git Cherry-pick vs Merge Workflow

Both rebase (and cherry-pick) and merge have their advantages and disadvantages. I argue for merge here, but it's worth understanding both. (Look here for an alternate, well-argued answer enumerating cases where rebase is preferred.)

merge is preferred over cherry-pick and rebase for a couple of reasons.

  1. Robustness. The SHA1 identifier of a commit identifies it not just in and of itself but also in relation to all other commits that precede it. This offers you a guarantee that the state of the repository at a given SHA1 is identical across all clones. There is (in theory) no chance that someone has done what looks like the same change but is actually corrupting or hijacking your repository. You can cherry-pick in individual changes and they are likely the same, but you have no guarantee. (As a minor secondary issue the new cherry-picked commits will take up extra space if someone else cherry-picks in the same commit again, as they will both be present in the history even if your working copies end up being identical.)
  2. Ease of use. People tend to understand the merge workflow fairly easily. rebase tends to be considered more advanced. It's best to understand both, but people who do not want to be experts in version control (which in my experience has included many colleagues who are damn good at what they do, but don't want to spend the extra time) have an easier time just merging.

Even with a merge-heavy workflow rebase and cherry-pick are still useful for particular cases:

  1. One downside to merge is cluttered history. rebase prevents a long series of commits from being scattered about in your history, as they would be if you periodically merged in others' changes. That is in fact its main purpose as I use it. What you want to be very careful of, is never to rebase code that you have shared with other repositories. Once a commit is pushed someone else might have committed on top of it, and rebasing will at best cause the kind of duplication discussed above. At worst you can end up with a very confused repository and subtle errors it will take you a long time to ferret out.
  2. cherry-pick is useful for sampling out a small subset of changes from a topic branch you've basically decided to discard, but realized there are a couple of useful pieces on.

As for preferring merging many changes over one: it's just a lot simpler. It can get very tedious to do merges of individual changesets once you start having a lot of them. The merge resolution in git (and in Mercurial, and in Bazaar) is very very good. You won't run into major problems merging even long branches most of the time. I generally merge everything all at once and only if I get a large number of conflicts do I back up and re-run the merge piecemeal. Even then I do it in large chunks. As a very real example I had a colleague who had 3 months worth of changes to merge, and got some 9000 conflicts in 250000 line code-base. What we did to fix is do the merge one month's worth at a time: conflicts do not build up linearly, and doing it in pieces results in far fewer than 9000 conflicts. It was still a lot of work, but not as much as trying to do it one commit at a time.

You could write your top line as

You needed command substitution $( ... ) to get the value assigned to $ip

reading lines from a file is usually considered more efficient with the while read line ... done < ${file} pattern.

ElasticSearch, Sphinx, Lucene, Solr, Xapian. Which fits for which usage?

As the creator of ElasticSearch, maybe I can give you some reasoning on why I went ahead and created it in the first place :).

Using pure Lucene is challenging. There are many things that you need to take care for if you want it to really perform well, and also, its a library, so no distributed support, it's just an embedded Java library that you need to maintain.

In terms of Lucene usability, way back when (almost 6 years now), I created Compass. Its aim was to simplify using Lucene and make everyday Lucene simpler. What I came across time and time again is the requirement to be able to have Compass distributed. I started to work on it from within Compass, by integrating with data grid solutions like GigaSpaces, Coherence, and Terracotta, but it's not enough.

At its core, a distributed Lucene solution needs to be sharded. Also, with the advancement of HTTP and JSON as ubiquitous APIs, it means that a solution that many different systems with different languages can easily be used.

This is why I went ahead and created ElasticSearch. It has a very advanced distributed model, speaks JSON natively, and exposes many advanced search features, all seamlessly expressed through JSON DSL.

Solr is also a solution for exposing an indexing/search server over HTTP, but I would argue that ElasticSearch provides a much superior distributed model and ease of use (though currently lacking on some of the search features, but not for long, and in any case, the plan is to get all Compass features into ElasticSearch). Of course, I am biased, since I created ElasticSearch, so you might need to check for yourself.

As for Sphinx, I have not used it, so I can't comment. What I can refer you is to this thread at Sphinx forum which I think proves the superior distributed model of ElasticSearch.

Of course, ElasticSearch has many more features than just being distributed. It is actually built with a cloud in mind. You can check the feature list on the site.

You say that the matrices are the same dimensions, and yet you are trying to perform matrix multiplication on them. Multiplication of matrices with the same dimension is only possible if they are square. In your case, you get an assertion error, because the dimensions are not square. You have to be careful when multiplying matrices, as there are two possible meanings of multiply.

Matrix multiplication is where two matrices are multiplied directly. This operation multiplies matrix A of size [a x b] with matrix B of size [b x c] to produce matrix C of size [a x c]. In OpenCV it is achieved using the simple * operator:

Element-wise multiplication is where each pixel in the output matrix is formed by multiplying that pixel in matrix A by its corresponding entry in matrix B. The input matrices should be the same size, and the output will be the same size as well. This is achieved using the mul() function:

I was able to manipulate a JSON text string so it acts as a function which will execute on the server.

eval(JSON)[0].adjacencies[0].nodeTo expects to process a JSON string but, in reality, we just executed a function on our server.

This could also be prevented if we server-side check all user-provided data before passing it to an eval() function but why not just use the built-in tool for parsing JSON and avoid all this trouble and danger?

The "* and "+ registers are for the system's clipboard (:help registers). Depending on your system, they may do different things. For instance, on systems that don't use X11 like OSX or Windows, the "* register is used to read and write to the system clipboard. On X11 systems both registers can be used. See :help x11-selection for more details, but basically the "* is analogous to X11's _PRIMARY_ selection (which usually copies things you select with the mouse and pastes with the middle mouse button) and "+ is analogous to X11's _CLIPBOARD_ selection (which is the clipboard proper).

If all that went over your head, try using "*yy or "+yy to copy a line to your system's clipboard. Assuming you have the appropriate compile options, one or the other should work.

You might like to remap this to something more convenient for you. For example, you could put vnoremap <C-c> "*y in your ~/.vimrc so that you can visually select and press Ctrl+c to yank to your system's clipboard.

Be aware that copying/pasting from the system clipboard will not work if :echo has('clipboard') returns 0. In this case, vim is not compiled with the +clipboard feature and you'll have to install a different version or recompile it. Some linux distros supply a minimal vim installation by default, but if you install the vim-gtk or vim-gtk3 package you can get the extra features nonetheless.

You also may want to have a look at the 'clipboard' option described in :help cb. In this case you can :set clipboard=unnamed or :set clipboard=unnamedplus to make all yanking/deleting operations automatically copy to the system clipboard. This could be an inconvenience in some cases where you are storing something else in the clipboard as it will override it.

To paste you can use "+p or "*p (again, depending on your system and/or desired selection) or you can map these to something else. I type them explicitly, but I often find myself in insert mode. If you're in insert mode you can still paste them with proper indentation by using <C-r><C-p>* or <C-r><C-p>+. See :help i_CTRL-R_CTRL-P.

It's also worth mentioning vim's paste option (:help paste). This puts vim into a special "paste mode" that disables several other options, allowing you to easily paste into vim using your terminal emulator's or multiplexer's familiar paste shortcut. (Simply type :set paste to enable it, paste your content and then type :set nopaste to disable it.) Alternatively, you can use the pastetoggle option to set a keycode that toggles the mode (:help pastetoggle).

I recommend using registers instead of these options, but if they are still too scary, this can be a convenient workaround while you're perfecting your vim chops.

I would be inclined to include the year in the output. One way:

Another way (more standard SQL):

select extract(year from date_created) as yr, extract(month from date_created) as mon,

group by extract(year from date_created), extract(month from date_created)
order by yr, mon;

Remember the order by, since you presumably want these in order, and there is no guarantee about the order that rows are returned in after a group by.
