Programs & Examples On #Boot

The boot phase broadly refers to the set of operations that a computer system performs between power-on and access to a graphical/textual shell. Do NOT use this tag for Spring Boot or Twitter Bootstrap. Use [spring-boot] and [twitter-bootstrap] instead.

Run script with rc.local: script works, but not at boot

I found that because I was using a network-oriented command in my rc.local, sometimes it would fail. I fixed this by putting sleep 3 at the top of my script. I don't know why but it seems when the script is run the network interfaces aren't properly configured or something, and this just allows some time for the DHCP server or something. I don't fully understand but I suppose you could give it a try.

Python "extend" for a dictionary

As others have mentioned, a.update(b) for some dicts a and b will achieve the result you've asked for in your question. However, I want to point out that many times I have seen the extend method of mapping/set objects desire that in the syntax a.extend(b), a's values should NOT be overwritten by b's values. a.update(b) overwrites a's values, and so isn't a good choice for extend.

Note that some languages call this method defaults or inject, as it can be thought of as a way of injecting b's values (which might be a set of default values) in to a dictionary without overwriting values that might already exist.

Of course, you could simple note that a.extend(b) is nearly the same as b.update(a); a=b. To remove the assignment, you could do it thus:

def extend(a,b):
    """Create a new dictionary with a's properties extended by b,
    without overwriting.

    >>> extend({'a':1,'b':2},{'b':3,'c':4})
    {'a': 1, 'c': 4, 'b': 2}
    """
    return dict(b,**a)

Thanks to Tom Leys for that smart idea using a side-effect-less dict constructor for extend.

Good examples using java.util.logging

There are many examples and also of different types for logging. Take a look at the java.util.logging package.

Example code:

import java.util.logging.Logger;

public class Main {

  private static Logger LOGGER = Logger.getLogger("InfoLogging");

  public static void main(String[] args) {
    LOGGER.info("Logging an INFO-level message");
  }
}

Without hard-coding the class name:

import java.util.logging.Logger;

public class Main {
  private static final Logger LOGGER = Logger.getLogger(
    Thread.currentThread().getStackTrace()[0].getClassName() );

  public static void main(String[] args) {
    LOGGER.info("Logging an INFO-level message");
  }
}

How can I rebuild indexes and update stats in MySQL innoDB?

To date (mysql 8.0.18) there is no suitable function inside mysql to re-create indexes.
Since mysql 8.0 myisam is slowly phasing into deprecated status, innodb is the current main storage engine.
In most practical cases innodb is the best choice and it's supposed to keep indexes working well.
In most practical cases innodb also does a good job, you do not need to recreate indexes. Almost always.

When it comes to large tables with hundreds of GB data amd rows and a lot of writing the situation changes, indexes can degrade in performance.
In my personal case I've seen performance drop from ~15 minutes for a count(*) using a secondary index to 4300 minutes after 2 months of writing to the table with linear time increase.
After recreating the index the performance goes back to 15 minutes.

To date we have two options to do that:
1) OPTIMIZE TABLE (or ALTER TABLE)
Innodb doesn't support optimization so in both cases the entire table will be read and re-created.
This means you need the storage for the temporary file and depending on the table a lot of time (I've cases where an optimize takes a week to complete). This will compact the data and rebuild all indexes.
Despite not being officially recommended, I highly recommend the OPTIMIZE process on write-heavy tables up to 100GB in size.

2) ALTER TABLE DROP KEY -> ALTER TABLE ADD KEY
You manually drop the key by name, you manually create it again. In a production environment you'll want to create it first, then drop the old version.
The upside: this can be a lot faster than optimize. The downside: you need to manually create the syntax.
"SHOW CREATE TABLE" can be used to quickly see which indexes are available and how they are called.

Appendix:
1) To just update statistics you can use the already mentioned "ANALYZE TABLE".
2) If you experience performance degradation on write-heavy servers you might need to restart mysql. There are a couple of bugs in current mysql (8.0) that can cause significant slowdown without showing up in error log. Eventually those slowdowns lead to a server crash but it can take weeks or even months to build up to the crash, in this process the server gets slower and slower in responses.
3) If you wish to re-create a large table that takes weeks to complete or fails after hours due to internal data integrity problems you should do a CREATE TABLE LIKE, INSERT INTO SELECT *. then 'atomic RENAME' the tables.
4) If INSERT INTO SELECT * takes hours to days to complete on huge tables you can speed up the process by about 20-30 times using a multi-threaded approach. You "partition" the table into chunks and INSERT INTO SELECT * in parallel.

How to get client IP address in Laravel 5+

If you are still getting 127.0.0.1 as the IP, you need to add your "proxy", but be aware that you have to change it before going into production!

Read "Configuring Trusted Proxies".

And add this:

class TrustProxies extends Middleware
{
    /**
     * The trusted proxies for this application.
     *
     * @var array
     */
    protected $proxies = '*';

Now request()->ip() gives you the correct IP.

What precisely does 'Run as administrator' do?

So ... more digging, with the result. It seems that although I ran one process normal and one "As Administrator", I had UAC off. Turning UAC to medium allowed me to see different results. Basically, it all boils down to integrity levels, which are 5.

Browsers, for example, run at Low Level (1), while services (System user) run at System Level (4). Everything is very well explained in Windows Integrity Mechanism Design . When UAC is enabled, processes are created with Medium level (SID S-1-16-8192 AKA 0x2000 is added) while when "Run as Administrator", the process is created with High Level (SID S-1-16-12288 aka 0x3000).

So the correct ACCESS_TOKEN for a normal user (Medium Integrity level) is:

0:000:x86> !token
Thread is not impersonating. Using process token...

How to use npm with ASP.NET Core

I've found a better way how to manage JS packages in my project with NPM Gulp/Grunt task runners. I don't like the idea to have a NPM with another layer of javascript library to handle the "automation", and my number one requirement is to simple run the npm update without any other worries about to if I need to run gulp stuff, if it successfully copied everything and vice versa.

The NPM way:

  • The JS minifier is already bundled in the ASP.net core, look for bundleconfig.json so this is not an issue for me (not compiling something custom)
  • The good thing about NPM is that is have a good file structure so I can always find the pre-compiled/minified versions of the dependencies under the node_modules/module/dist
  • I'm using an NPM node_modules/.hooks/{eventname} script which is handling the copy/update/delete of the Project/wwwroot/lib/module/dist/.js files, you can find the documentation here https://docs.npmjs.com/misc/scripts (I'll update the script that I'm using to git once it'll be more polished) I don't need additional task runners (.js tools which I don't like) what keeps my project clean and simple.

The python way:

https://pypi.python.org/pyp... but in this case you need to maintain the sources manually

How can moment.js be imported with typescript?

Not sure when this changed, but with the latest version of typescript, you just need to use import moment from 'moment'; and everything else should work as normal.

UPDATE:

Looks like moment recent fixed their import. As of at least 2.24.0 you'll want to use import * as moment from 'moment';

How to use Regular Expressions (Regex) in Microsoft Excel both in-cell and loops

To add to the valuable content, I would like to create this reminder on why sometimes RegEx within VBA is not ideal. Not all expressions are supported, but instead may throw an Error 5017 and may leave the author guessing (which I am a victim of myself).

Whilst we can find some sources on what is supported, it would be helpfull to know which metacharacters etc. are not supported. A more in-depth explaination can be found here. Mentioned in this source:

"Although "VBScript’s regular expression ... version 5.5 implements quite a few essential regex features that were missing in previous versions of VBScript. ... JavaScript and VBScript implement Perl-style regular expressions. However, they lack quite a number of advanced features available in Perl and other modern regular expression flavors:"

So, not supported are:

  • Start of String ancor \A, alternatively use the ^ caret to match postion before 1st char in string
  • End of String ancor \Z, alternatively use the $ dollar sign to match postion after last char in string
  • Positive LookBehind, e.g.: (?<=a)b (whilst postive LookAhead is supported)
  • Negative LookBehind, e.g.: (?<!a)b (whilst negative LookAhead is supported)
  • Atomic Grouping
  • Possessive Quantifiers
  • Unicode e.g.: \{uFFFF}
  • Named Capturing Groups. Alternatively use Numbered Capturing Groups
  • Inline modifiers, e.g.: /i (case sensitivity) or /g (global) etc. Set these through the RegExp object properties > RegExp.Global = True and RegExp.IgnoreCase = True if available.
  • Conditionals
  • Regular Expression Comments. Add these with regular ' comments in script

I already hit a wall more than once using regular expressions within VBA. Usually with LookBehind but sometimes I even forget the modifiers. I have not experienced all these above mentioned backdrops myself but thought I would try to be extensive referring to some more in-depth information. Feel free to comment/correct/add. Big shout out to regular-expressions.info for a wealth of information.

P.S. You have mentioned regular VBA methods and functions, and I can confirm they (at least to myself) have been helpful in their own ways where RegEx would fail.

String.strip() in Python

strip does nothing but, removes the the whitespace in your string. If you want to remove the extra whitepace from front and back of your string, you can use strip.

The example string which can illustrate that is this:

In [2]: x = "something \t like     \t this"
In [4]: x.split('\t')
Out[4]: ['something ', ' like     ', ' this']

See, even after splitting with \t there is extra whitespace in first and second items which can be removed using strip in your code.

urlencode vs rawurlencode?

The difference is in the return values, i.e:

urlencode():

Returns a string in which all non-alphanumeric characters except -_. have been replaced with a percent (%) sign followed by two hex digits and spaces encoded as plus (+) signs. It is encoded the same way that the posted data from a WWW form is encoded, that is the same way as in application/x-www-form-urlencoded media type. This differs from the » RFC 1738 encoding (see rawurlencode()) in that for historical reasons, spaces are encoded as plus (+) signs.

rawurlencode():

Returns a string in which all non-alphanumeric characters except -_. have been replaced with a percent (%) sign followed by two hex digits. This is the encoding described in » RFC 1738 for protecting literal characters from being interpreted as special URL delimiters, and for protecting URLs from being mangled by transmission media with character conversions (like some email systems).

The two are very similar, but the latter (rawurlencode) will replace spaces with a '%' and two hex digits, which is suitable for encoding passwords or such, where a '+' is not e.g.:

echo '<a href="ftp://user:', rawurlencode('foo @+%/'),
     '@ftp.example.com/x.txt">';
//Outputs <a href="ftp://user:foo%20%40%2B%25%[email protected]/x.txt">

using if else with eval in aspx page

If you absolutely do not want to use code-behind, you can try conditional operator for this:

<%# ((int)Eval("Percentage") < 50) ? "0 %" : Eval("Percentage") %>

That is assuming field Percentage contains integer.

Update: Version for VB.NET, just in case, provided by tomasofen:

<%# If(Eval("Status") < 50, "0 %", Eval("Percentage")) %>

Rename Oracle Table or View

Past 10g the current answer no longer works for renaming views. The only method that still works is dropping and recreating the view. The best way I can think of to do this would be:

SELECT TEXT FROM ALL_VIEWS WHERE owner='some_schema' and VIEW_NAME='some_view';

Add this in front of the SQL returned

Create or replace view some_schema.new_view_name as ...

Drop the old view

Drop view some_schema.some_view;

Skip to next iteration in loop vba

The present solution produces the same flow as your OP. It does not use Labels, but this was not a requirement of the OP. You only asked for "a simple conditional loop that will go to the next iteration if a condition is true", and since this is cleaner to read, it is likely a better option than that using a Label.

What you want inside your for loop follows the pattern

If (your condition) Then
    'Do something
End If

In this case, your condition is Not(Return = 0 And Level = 0), so you would use

For i = 2 To 24
    Level = Cells(i, 4)
    Return = Cells(i, 5)

    If (Not(Return = 0 And Level = 0)) Then
        'Do something
    End If
Next i

PS: the condition is equivalent to (Return <> 0 Or Level <> 0)

RegEx for valid international mobile phone number

Even if you write a regular expression that matches exactly the subset "valid phone numbers" out of strings, there is no way to guarantee (by way of a regular expression) that they are valid mobile phone numbers. In several countries, mobile phone numbers are indistinguishable from landline phone numbers without at least a number plan lookup, and in some cases, even that won't help. For example, in Sweden, lots of people have "ported" their regular, landline-like phone number to their mobile phone. It's still the same number as they had before, but now it goes to a mobile phone instead of a landline.

Since valid phone numbers consist only of digits, I doubt that rolling your own would risk missing some obscure case of phone number at least. If you want to have better certainty, write a generator that takes a list of all valid country codes, and requires one of them at the beginning of the phone number to be matched by the generated regular expression.

How to prevent scientific notation in R?

To set the use of scientific notation in your entire R session, you can use the scipen option. From the documentation (?options):

‘scipen’: integer. A penalty to be applied when deciding to print
          numeric values in fixed or exponential notation. Positive
          values bias towards fixed and negative towards scientific
          notation: fixed notation will be preferred unless it is more
          than ‘scipen’ digits wider.

So in essence this value determines how likely it is that scientific notation will be triggered. So to prevent scientific notation, simply use a large positive value like 999:

options(scipen=999)

TypeScript have a way of validating the type of a variable in runtime. You can add a validating function that returns a type predicate. So you can call this function inside an if statement, and be sure that all the code inside that block is safe to use as the type you think it is.

Example from the TypeScript docs:

function isFish(pet: Fish | Bird): pet is Fish {
   return (<Fish>pet).swim !== undefined;
}

// Both calls to 'swim' and 'fly' are now okay.
if (isFish(pet)) {
  pet.swim();
}
else {
  pet.fly();
}

How to round up integer division and have int result in Java?

Use Math.ceil() and cast the result to int:

  • This is still faster than to avoid doubles by using abs().
  • The result is correct when working with negatives, because -0.999 will be rounded UP to 0

Example:

(int) Math.ceil((double)divident / divisor);

gcloud command not found - while installing Google Cloud SDK

Compile a DLL in C/C++, then call it from another program

The thing to watch out for when writing C++ dlls is name mangling. If you want interoperability between C and C++, you'd be better off by exporting non-mangled C-style functions from within the dll.

You have two options to use a dll

  • Either use a lib file to link the symbols -- compile time dynamic linking
  • Use LoadLibrary() or some suitable function to load the library, retrieve a function pointer (GetProcAddress) and call it -- runtime dynamic linking

Exporting classes will not work if you follow the second method though.

Setting values of input fields with Angular 6

You should use the following:

       <td><input id="priceInput-{{orderLine.id}}" type="number" [(ngModel)]="orderLine.price"></td>

You will need to add the FormsModule to your app.module in the inputs section as follows:

import { FormsModule } from '@angular/forms';

@NgModule({
  declarations: [
    ...
  ],
  imports: [
    BrowserModule,
    FormsModule
  ],
  ..

The use of the brackets around the ngModel are as follows:

  • The [] show that it is taking an input from your TS file. This input should be a public member variable. A one way binding from TS to HTML.

  • The () show that it is taking output from your HTML file to a variable in the TS file. A one way binding from HTML to TS.

  • The [()] are both (e.g. a two way binding)

See here for more information: https://angular.io/guide/template-syntax

I would also suggest replacing id="priceInput-{{orderLine.id}}" with something like this [id]="getElementId(orderLine)" where getElementId(orderLine) returns the element Id in the TS file and can be used anywere you need to reference the element (to avoid simple bugs like calling it priceInput1 in one place and priceInput-1 in another. (if you still need to access the input by it's Id somewhere else)

How to set up subdomains on IIS 7

As DotNetMensch said but you DO NOT need to add another site in IIS as this can also cause further problems and make things more complicated because you then have a website within a website so the file paths, masterpage paths and web.config paths may need changing. You just need to edit teh bindings of the existing site and add the new subdomain there.

So:

  1. Add sub-domain to DNS records. My host (RackSpace) uses a web portal to do this so you just log in and go to Network->Domains(DNS)->Actions->Create Zone, and enter your subdomain as mysubdomain.domain.com etc, leave the other settings as default

  2. Go to your domain in IIS, right-click->Edit Bindings->Add, and add your new subdomain leaving everything else the same e.g. mysubdomain.domain.com

You may need to wait 5-10 mins for the DNS records to update but that's all you need.

CSS to make HTML page footer stay at bottom of the page with a minimum height, but not overlap the page

I've used this to stick my footer to the bottom and it worked for me:

HTML

<body>
    <div class="allButFooter">
        <!-- Your page's content goes here, including header, nav, aside, everything -->
    </div>
    <footer>
        <!-- Footer content -->
    </footer>
</body>

That's the only modification you have to do in the HTML, add that div with the "allButFooter" class. I did it with all the pages, those that were so short, I knew the footer wouldn't stick to the bottom, and also pages long enough that I already knew I had to scroll. I did this, so I could see that it works ok in the case that a page's content is dynamic.

CSS

.allButFooter {
    min-height: calc(100vh - 40px);
}

The "allButFooter" class has a min-height value that depends on the viewport's height (100vh means 100% of the viewport height) and the footer's height, that I already knew was 40px.

That's all I did, and it worked perfectly for me. I haven't tried it in every browser, just Firefox, Chrome and Edge, and the results were as I wanted. The footer sticks to the bottom, and you don't have to mess with z-index, position, or any other properties. The position of every element in my document was the default position, I didn't change it to absolute or fixed or anything.

Working with responsive design

Here's something I would like to clear out. This solution, with the same Footer that was 40px high didn't work as I expected when I was working in a responsive design using Twitter-Bootstrap. I had to modify the value I was substracting in the function:

.allButFooter {
    min-height: calc(100vh - 95px);
}

This is probably because Twitter-Bootstrap comes with its own margins and paddings, so that's why I had to adjust that value.

I hope this is of some use for you guys! At least, it's a simple solution to try, and it doesn't involve making big changes to the whole document.

How do I use $rootScope in Angular to store variables?

If it is just "access in other controller" then you can use angular constants for that, the benefit is; you can add some global settings or other things that you want to access throughout application

app.constant(‘appGlobals’, {
    defaultTemplatePath: '/assets/html/template/',
    appName: 'My Awesome App'
});

and then access it like:

app.controller(‘SomeController’, [‘appGlobals’, function SomeController(config) {
    console.log(appGlobals);
    console.log(‘default path’, appGlobals.defaultTemplatePath);
}]);

(didn't test)

Difference in months between two dates

Here's a much more concise solution using VB.Net DateDiff for Year, Month, Day only. You can load the DateDiff library in C# as well.

date1 must be <= date2

VB.NET

Dim date1 = Now.AddDays(-2000)
Dim date2 = Now
Dim diffYears = DateDiff(DateInterval.Year, date1, date2) - If(date1.DayOfYear > date2.DayOfYear, 1, 0)
Dim diffMonths = DateDiff(DateInterval.Month, date1, date2) - diffYears * 12 - If(date1.Day > date2.Day, 1, 0)
Dim diffDays = If(date2.Day >= date1.Day, date2.Day - date1.Day, date2.Day + (Date.DaysInMonth(date1.Year, date1.Month) - date1.Day))

C#

DateTime date1 = Now.AddDays(-2000);
DateTime date2 = Now;
int diffYears = DateDiff(DateInterval.Year, date1, date2) - date1.DayOfYear > date2.DayOfYear ? 1 : 0;
int diffMonths = DateDiff(DateInterval.Month, date1, date2) - diffYears * 12 - date1.Day > date2.Day ? 1 : 0;
int diffDays = date2.Day >= date1.Day ? date2.Day - date1.Day : date2.Day + (System.DateTime.DaysInMonth(date1.Year, date1.Month) - date1.Day);

How do I get LaTeX to hyphenate a word that contains a dash?

multi-disciplinary will not be hyphenated, as explained by kennytm. But multi-\-disciplinary has the same hyphenation opportunities that multidisciplinary has.

I admit that I don't know why this works. It is different from the behaviour described here (emphasis mine):

The command \- inserts a discretionary hyphen into a word. This also becomes the only point where hyphenation is allowed in this word.

How to redirect stderr and stdout to different files in the same line in script?

Multiple commands' output can be redirected. This works for either the command line or most usefully in a bash script. The -s directs the password prompt to the screen.

Hereblock cmds stdout/stderr are sent to seperate files and nothing to display.

sudo -s -u username <<'EOF' 2>err 1>out
ls; pwd;
EOF

Hereblock cmds stdout/stderr are sent to a single file and display.

sudo -s -u username <<'EOF' 2>&1 | tee out
ls; pwd;
EOF

Hereblock cmds stdout/stderr are sent to separate files and stdout to display.

sudo -s -u username <<'EOF' 2>err | tee out
ls; pwd;
EOF

Here's a shell script I made for myself:

#! /bin/sh

for device in `adb devices | awk '{print $1}'`; do
  if [ ! "$device" = "" ] && [ ! "$device" = "List" ]
  then
    echo " "
    echo "adb -s $device $@"
    echo "------------------------------------------------------"
    adb -s $device $@

XSS prevention in JSP/Servlet web application

Managing XSS requires multiple validations, data from the client side.

  1. Input Validations (form validation) on the Server side. There are multiple ways of going about it. You can try JSR 303 bean validation(hibernate validator), or ESAPI Input Validation framework. Though I've not tried it myself (yet), there is an annotation that checks for safe html (@SafeHtml). You could in fact use Hibernate validator with Spring MVC for bean validations -> Ref
  2. Escaping URL requests - For all your HTTP requests, use some sort of XSS filter. I've used the following for our web app and it takes care of cleaning up the HTTP URL request - http://www.servletsuite.com/servlets/xssflt.htm
  3. Escaping data/html returned to the client (look above at @BalusC explanation).

Assembly code vs Machine code vs Object code?

Source code, Assembly code, Machine code, Object code, Byte code, Executable file and Library file.

All these terms are often very confusing for most people for the fact that they think they are mutually exclusive. See the diagram to understand their relations. The description of each term is given below.

Types of code

Source code

Instructions in human readable (programming) language

High-level code

Instructions written in a high level (programming) language
e.g., C, C++ and Java programs

Assembly code

Instructions written in an assembly language (kind of low-level programming language). As the first step of the compilation process, high-level code is converted into this form. It is the assembly code which is then being converted into actual machine code. On most systems, these two steps are performed automatically as a part of the compilation process.
e.g., program.asm

Object code

The product of a compilation process. It may be in the form of machine code or byte code.
e.g., file.o

Machine code

Instructions in machine language.
e.g., a.out

Byte code

Instruction in an intermediate form which can be executed by an interpreter such as JVM.
e.g., Java class file

Executable file

The product of linking proccess. They are machine code which can be directly executed by the CPU.
e.g., an .exe file.

Note that in some contexts a file containing byte-code or scripting language instructions may also be considered executable.

Library file

Some code is compiled into this form for different reasons such as re-usability and later used by executable files.

Why does the html input with type "number" allow the letter 'e' to be entered in the field?

Using angular, You can do this to restrict to enter e,+,-,E

 <input type="number"  (keypress)="numericOnly($event)"/>

  numericOnly(event): boolean { // restrict e,+,-,E characters in input type number
    debugger
    const charCode = (event.which) ? event.which : event.keyCode;
    if (charCode == 101 || charCode == 69 || charCode == 45 || charCode == 43) {
      return false;
    }
    return true;

  }

Postman: How to make multiple requests at the same time

Postman doesn't do that but you can run multiple curl requests asynchronously in Bash:

curl url1 & curl url2 & curl url3 & ...

Remember to add an & after each request which means that request should run as an async job.

Postman however can generate curl snippet for your request: https://learning.getpostman.com/docs/postman/sending_api_requests/generate_code_snippets/

Using Java 8 to convert a list of objects into a string obtained from the toString() method

List<String> list = Arrays.asList("One", "Two", "Three");
    list.stream()
            .reduce("", org.apache.commons.lang3.StringUtils::join);

Or

List<String> list = Arrays.asList("One", "Two", "Three");
        list.stream()
                .reduce("", (s1,s2)->s1+s2);

This approach allows you also build a string result from a list of objects Example

List<Wrapper> list = Arrays.asList(w1, w2, w2);
        list.stream()
                .map(w->w.getStringValue)
                .reduce("", org.apache.commons.lang3.StringUtils::join);

Here the reduce function allows you to have some initial value to which you want to append new string Example:

 List<String> errors = Arrays.asList("er1", "er2", "er3");
            list.stream()
                    .reduce("Found next errors:", (s1,s2)->s1+s2);

What causes a TCP/IP reset (RST) flag to be sent?

If there is a router doing NAT, especially a low end router with few resources, it will age the oldest TCP sessions first. To do this it sets the RST flag in the packet that effectively tells the receiving station to (very ungracefully) close the connection. this is done to save resources.

Find the max of 3 numbers in Java with different data types

int first = 3;
int mid = 4;
int last = 6;

//checks for the largest number using the Math.max(a,b) method
//for the second argument (b) you just use the same method to check which //value is greater between the second and the third
int largest = Math.max(first, Math.max(last, mid));

Check if a string is palindrome

Reverse the string and check if original string and reverse are same or not

Plotting multiple time series on the same plot using ggplot()

This is old, just update new tidyverse workflow not mentioned above.

library(tidyverse)

jobsAFAM1 <- tibble(
    date = seq.Date(from = as.Date('2017-01-01'),by = 'day', length.out = 5),
    Percent.Change = runif(5, 0,1)
    ) %>%
    mutate(serial='jobsAFAM1')
jobsAFAM2 <- tibble(
    date = seq.Date(from = as.Date('2017-01-01'),by = 'day', length.out = 5),
    Percent.Change = runif(5, 0,1)
    ) %>%
    mutate(serial='jobsAFAM2')
jobsAFAM <- bind_rows(jobsAFAM1, jobsAFAM2)

ggplot(jobsAFAM, aes(x=date, y=Percent.Change, col=serial)) + geom_line()

@Chris Njuguna

tidyr::gather() is the one in tidyverse workflow to turn wide dataframe to long tidy layout, then ggplot could plot multiple serials.

Java: Enum parameter in method

Sure, you could use an enum. Would something like the following work?

enum Alignment {
    LEFT,
    RIGHT
}

private static String drawCellValue(int maxCellLength, String cellValue, Alignment alignment) { }

If you wanted to use a boolean, you could rename the align parameter to something like alignLeft. I agree that this implementation is not as clean, but if you don't anticipate a lot of changes and this is not a public interface, it might be a good choice.

Angular: How to update queryParams without changing route

I ended up combining urlTree with location.go

const urlTree = this.router.createUrlTree([], {
       relativeTo: this.route,
       queryParams: {
           newParam: myNewParam,
       },
       queryParamsHandling: 'merge',
    });

    this.location.go(urlTree.toString());

Not sure if toString can cause problems, but unfortunately location.go, seems to be string based.

How to find out the username and password for mysql database

Go to this file in: WampFolder\apps\phpmyadmin[phpmyadmin version]\config.inc.php

Usually wamp is in your main hard drive folder C:\wamp\

You will see something like:

$cfg['Servers'][$i]['user'] = 'YOUR USER NAME IS HERE';
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['password'] = 'AND YOU PASSWORD IS HERE';

Try using the password and username that you have on that file.

Visual Studio Code Tab Key does not insert a tab

How to pass command line argument to gnuplot?

You may use trick in unix/linux environment:

  1. in gnuplot program: plot "/dev/stdin" ...

  2. In command line: gnuplot program.plot < data.dat

Switch case: can I use a range instead of a one number

Here is a better and elegant solution for your problem statement.

int mynumbercheck = 1000;
// Your number to be checked
var myswitch = new Dictionary <Func<int,bool>, Action>
            {
             { x => x < 10 ,    () => //Do this!...  },
             { x => x < 100 ,    () => //Do this!...  },
             { x => x < 1000 ,    () => //Do this!...  },
             { x => x < 10000 ,   () => //Do this!... } ,
             { x => x < 100000 ,  () => //Do this!... },
             { x => x < 1000000 ,  () => //Do this!... }
            };

Now to call our conditional switch

   myswitch.First(sw => sw.Key(mynumbercheck)).Value();

Alternate for Switch/ifElse

TypeLoadException says 'no implementation', but it is implemented

FWIW, I got this when there was a config file that redirected to a non-existent version of a referenced assembly. Fusion logs for the win!

Remove padding from columns in Bootstrap 3

<div class="col-md-12">
<h2>OntoExplorer<span style="color:#b92429">.</span></h2>

<div class="col-md-4">
    <div class="widget row">
        <div class="widget-header">
            <h3>Dimensions</h3>
        </div>

        <div class="widget-content" id="">
            <div id='jqxWidget'>
                <div style="clear:both;margin-bottom:20px;" id="listBoxA"></div>
                <div style="clear:both;" id="listBoxB"></div>

            </div>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

<div class="col-md-8">
    <div class="widget row">
        <div class="widget-header">
            <h3>Results</h3>
        </div>

        <div class="widget-content">
            <div id="map_canvas" style="height: 362px;"></div>
        </div>
    </div>
</div>

You can add a class of row to the div inside the col-md-4 and the row's -15px margin will balance out the gutter from the columns. Good explanation here about gutters and rows in Bootstrap 3.

Java array reflection: isArray vs. instanceof

I recently ran into an issue upgrading a Groovy application from JDK 5 to JDK 6. Using isArray() failed in JDK6:

MissingMethodException:
No signature of sun.reflect.generics.reflectiveObjects.GenericArrayTypeImpl.isArray() ...

Changing to instanceof Object[] fixed this.

To check whether the frame have been loaded, use onload function. Or put your main function in load: I recommend to use load when creating the iframe by js

 $('<iframe />', {
   src: url,
   id:  'receiver',
   frameborder: 1,
   load:function(){
     //put your code here, so that those code can be make sure to be run after the frame loaded

lvalue required as left operand of assignment error when using C++

It is just a typo(I guess)-

p+=1;

instead of p +1=p; is required .

As name suggest lvalue expression should be left-hand operand of the assignment operator.

POST request not allowed - 405 Not Allowed - nginx, even with headers included

I have tried the solution which redirects 405 to 200, and in production environment(in my case, it's Google Load Balancing with Nginx Docker container), this hack causes some 502 errors(Google Load Balancing error code: backend_early_response_with_non_error_status).

In the end, I have made this work properly by replacing Nginx with OpenResty which is completely compatible with Nginx and have more plugins.

With ngx_coolkit, Now Nginx(OpenResty) could serve static files with POST request properly, here is the config file in my case:

server {
  listen 80;

Best Timer for using in a Windows service

Both System.Timers.Timer and System.Threading.Timer will work for services.

The timers you want to avoid are System.Web.UI.Timer and System.Windows.Forms.Timer, which are respectively for ASP applications and WinForms. Using those will cause the service to load an additional assembly which is not really needed for the type of application you are building.

Use System.Timers.Timer like the following example (also, make sure that you use a class level variable to prevent garbage collection, as stated in Tim Robinson's answer):

using System;
using System.Timers;

public class Timer1
{
    private static System.Timers.Timer aTimer;

    public static void Main()
    {
        // Normally, the timer is declared at the class level,
        // so that it stays in scope as long as it is needed.
        // If the timer is declared in a long-running method,
        // KeepAlive must be used to prevent the JIT compiler
        // from allowing aggressive garbage collection to occur
        // before the method ends. (See end of method.)
        //System.Timers.Timer aTimer;

        // Create a timer with a ten second interval.
        aTimer = new System.Timers.Timer(10000);

        // Hook up the Elapsed event for the timer.
        aTimer.Elapsed += new ElapsedEventHandler(OnTimedEvent);

        // Set the Interval to 2 seconds (2000 milliseconds).
        aTimer.Interval = 2000;
        aTimer.Enabled = true;

        Console.WriteLine("Press the Enter key to exit the program.");
        Console.ReadLine();

        // If the timer is declared in a long-running method, use
        // KeepAlive to prevent garbage collection from occurring
        // before the method ends.
        //GC.KeepAlive(aTimer);
    }

    // Specify what you want to happen when the Elapsed event is
    // raised.
    private static void OnTimedEvent(object source, ElapsedEventArgs e)
    {
        Console.WriteLine("The Elapsed event was raised at {0}", e.SignalTime);
    }
}

/* This code example produces output similar to the following:

Press the Enter key to exit the program.
The Elapsed event was raised at 5/20/2007 8:42:27 PM
The Elapsed event was raised at 5/20/2007 8:42:29 PM
The Elapsed event was raised at 5/20/2007 8:42:31 PM
...
 */

If you choose System.Threading.Timer, you can use as follows:

using System;
using System.Threading;

class TimerExample
{
    static void Main()
    {
        AutoResetEvent autoEvent     = new AutoResetEvent(false);
        StatusChecker  statusChecker = new StatusChecker(10);

        // Create the delegate that invokes methods for the timer.
        TimerCallback timerDelegate =
            new TimerCallback(statusChecker.CheckStatus);

        // Create a timer that signals the delegate to invoke
        // CheckStatus after one second, and every 1/4 second
        // thereafter.
        Console.WriteLine("{0} Creating timer.\n",
            DateTime.Now.ToString("h:mm:ss.fff"));
        Timer stateTimer =
                new Timer(timerDelegate, autoEvent, 1000, 250);

        // When autoEvent signals, change the period to every
        // 1/2 second.
        autoEvent.WaitOne(5000, false);
        stateTimer.Change(0, 500);
        Console.WriteLine("\nChanging period.\n");

        // When autoEvent signals the second time, dispose of
        // the timer.
        autoEvent.WaitOne(5000, false);
        stateTimer.Dispose();
        Console.WriteLine("\nDestroying timer.");
    }
}

class StatusChecker
{
    int invokeCount, maxCount;

    public StatusChecker(int count)
    {
        invokeCount  = 0;
        maxCount = count;
    }

    // This method is called by the timer delegate.
    public void CheckStatus(Object stateInfo)
    {
        AutoResetEvent autoEvent = (AutoResetEvent)stateInfo;
        Console.WriteLine("{0} Checking status {1,2}.",
            DateTime.Now.ToString("h:mm:ss.fff"),
            (++invokeCount).ToString());

        if(invokeCount == maxCount)
        {
            // Reset the counter and signal Main.
            invokeCount  = 0;
            autoEvent.Set();
        }
    }
}

Both examples comes from the MSDN pages.

E: Unable to locate package npm

I had a similar issue and this is what worked for me.

Add the NodeSource package signing key:

curl -sSL https://deb.nodesource.com/gpgkey/nodesource.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -
# wget can also be used:
# wget --quiet -O - https://deb.nodesource.com/gpgkey/nodesource.gpg.key | sudo apt-key add -

Add the desired NodeSource repository:

# Replace with the branch of Node.js or io.js you want to install: node_6.x, node_12.x, etc...
VERSION=node_12.x
# The below command will set this correctly, but if lsb_release isn't available, you can set it manually:
# - For Debian distributions: jessie, sid, etc...
# - For Ubuntu distributions: xenial, bionic, etc...
# - For Debian or Ubuntu derived distributions your best option is to use the codename corresponding to the upstream release your distribution is based off. This is an advanced scenario and unsupported if your distribution is not listed as supported per earlier in this README.
DISTRO="$(lsb_release -s -c)"
echo "deb https://deb.nodesource.com/$VERSION $DISTRO main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nodesource.list
echo "deb-src https://deb.nodesource.com/$VERSION $DISTRO main" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list.d/nodesource.list

Update package lists and install Node.js:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nodejs

What is the purpose of nameof?

I find that nameof increases the readability of very long and complex SQL statements in my applications. It makes the variables stand out of that sea of strings and eliminates your job of figuring out where the variables are used in your SQL statements.

public bool IsFooAFoo(string foo, string bar)
{
    var aVeryLongAndComplexQuery = $@"SELECT yada, yada
    -- long query in here
    WHERE fooColumn = @{nameof(foo)}
    AND barColumn = @{nameof(bar)}
    -- long query here";

    SqlParameter[] parameters = {
        new SqlParameter(nameof(foo), SqlDBType.VarChar, 10){ Value = foo },
        new SqlParameter(nameof(bar), SqlDBType.VarChar, 10){ Value = bar },
    }
}

How to check if a DateTime field is not null or empty?

DateTime is not standard nullable type. If you want assign null to DateTime type of variable, you have to use DateTime? type which supports null value.

If you only want test your variable to be set (e.g. variable holds other than default value), you can use keyword "default" like in following code:

if (dateTimeVariable == default(DateTime))
{
    //do work for dateTimeVariable == null situation
}

what is the difference between uint16_t and unsigned short int incase of 64 bit processor?

uint16_t is unsigned 16-bit integer.

unsigned short int is unsigned short integer, but the size is implementation dependent. The standard only says it's at least 16-bit (i.e, minimum value of UINT_MAX is 65535). In practice, it usually is 16-bit, but you can't take that as guaranteed.

Note:

  1. If you want a portable unsigned 16-bit integer, use uint16_t.
  2. inttypes.h and stdint.h are both introduced in C99. If you are using C89, define your own type.
  3. uint16_t may not be provided in certain implementation(See reference below), but unsigned short int is always available.

Reference: C11(ISO/IEC 9899:201x) §7.20 Integer types

For each type described herein that the implementation provides) shall declare that typedef name and define the associated macros. Conversely, for each type described herein that the implementation does not provide, shall not declare that typedef name nor shall it define the associated macros. An implementation shall provide those types described as ‘‘required’’, but need not provide any of the others (described as ‘optional’’).

Image overlay on responsive sized images bootstrap

Add a class to the containing div, then set the following css on it:

.img-overlay {
    position: relative;
    max-width: 500px; //whatever your max-width should be
}

position: relative is required on a parent element of children with position: absolute for the children to be positioned in relation to that parent.

Create XML file using java

You can use a DOM XML parser to create an XML file using Java. A good example can be found on this site:

try {
    DocumentBuilderFactory docFactory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
    DocumentBuilder docBuilder = docFactory.newDocumentBuilder();

    //root elements
    Document doc = docBuilder.newDocument();

    Element rootElement = doc.createElement("company");
    doc.appendChild(rootElement);

    //staff elements
    Element staff = doc.createElement("Staff");
    rootElement.appendChild(staff);

    //set attribute to staff element
    Attr attr = doc.createAttribute("id");
    attr.setValue("1");
    staff.setAttributeNode(attr);

    //shorten way
    //staff.setAttribute("id", "1");

    //firstname elements
    Element firstname = doc.createElement("firstname");
    firstname.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("yong"));
    staff.appendChild(firstname);

    //lastname elements
    Element lastname = doc.createElement("lastname");
    lastname.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("mook kim"));
    staff.appendChild(lastname);

    //nickname elements
    Element nickname = doc.createElement("nickname");
    nickname.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("mkyong"));
    staff.appendChild(nickname);

    //salary elements
    Element salary = doc.createElement("salary");
    salary.appendChild(doc.createTextNode("100000"));
    staff.appendChild(salary);

    //write the content into xml file
    TransformerFactory transformerFactory =  TransformerFactory.newInstance();
    Transformer transformer = transformerFactory.newTransformer();
    DOMSource source = new DOMSource(doc);

    StreamResult result =  new StreamResult(new File("C:\\testing.xml"));
    transformer.transform(source, result);

Python object.__repr__(self) should be an expression?

'repr' means represention. First,we create an instance of class coordinate.

x = Coordinate(3, 4)

Then if we input x into console,th output is

<__main__.Coordinate at 0x7fcd40ab27b8>

If you use repr():

>>> repr(x)
Coordinate(3, 4)

the output is as same as 'Coordinate(3, 4)',except it is a string.You can use it to recreate a instance of coordinate.

In conclusion,repr() meathod is print out a string,which is the representation of the obeject.

How to print variables in Perl

print "Number of lines: $nids\n";
print "Content: $ids\n";

How did Perl complain? print $ids should work, though you probably want a newline at the end, either explicitly with print as above or implicitly by using say or -l/$\.

If you want to interpolate a variable in a string and have something immediately after it that would looks like part of the variable but isn't, enclose the variable name in {}:

print "foo${ids}bar";

Is there a max array length limit in C++?

One thing I don't think has been mentioned in the previous answers.

I'm always sensing a "bad smell" in the refactoring sense when people are using such things in their design.

That's a huge array and possibly not the best way to represent your data both from an efficiency point of view and a performance point of view.

How to present popover properly in iOS 8

Actually it is much simpler than that. In the storyboard you should make the viewcontroller you want to use as popover and make a viewcontroller class for it as usual. Make a segue as shown below from the object you want to open the popover, in this case the UIBarButton named "Config".

enter image description here

In the "mother viewcontroller" implement the UIPopoverPresentationControllerDelegate and the delegate method:

func popoverPresentationControllerDidDismissPopover(popoverPresentationController: UIPopoverPresentationController) {
    //do som stuff from the popover
}

Override the prepareForSeque method like this:

override func prepare(for segue: UIStoryboardSegue, sender: Any?) {
     //segue for the popover configuration window
    if segue.identifier == "yourSegueIdentifierForPopOver" {
        if let controller = segue.destinationViewController as? UIViewController {
            controller.popoverPresentationController!.delegate = self
            controller.preferredContentSize = CGSize(width: 320, height: 186)
        }
    }
}

And you're done. And you can now treat the popover view as any other view, ie. add fields and what not! And you get hold of the the content controller by using the popoverPresentationController.presentedViewController method in the UIPopoverPresentationController.

Also on an iPhone you would have to overwrite

func adaptivePresentationStyle(for controller: UIPresentationController) -> UIModalPresentationStyle {

        return UIModalPresentationStyle.none
    }

Difference between Xms and Xmx and XX:MaxPermSize

Java objects reside in an area called the heap, while metadata such as class objects and method objects reside in the permanent generation or Perm Gen area. The permanent generation is not part of the heap.

The heap is created when the JVM starts up and may increase or decrease in size while the application runs. When the heap becomes full, garbage is collected. During the garbage collection objects that are no longer used are cleared, thus making space for new objects.

-Xmssize Specifies the initial heap size.

-Xmxsize Specifies the maximum heap size.

-XX:MaxPermSize=size Sets the maximum permanent generation space size. This option was deprecated in JDK 8, and superseded by the -XX:MaxMetaspaceSize option.

Sizes are expressed in bytes. Append the letter k or K to indicate kilobytes, m or M to indicate megabytes, g or G to indicate gigabytes.

I encountered this problem as well and the other answers here were helpful, but I am using a Route::resource which takes care of GET, POST, and other requests.

In my case I left my route as is:

Route::resource('file', 'FilesController');

And simply modified my form to submit to the store function in my FilesController

{{ Form::open(array('route' => 'file.store')) }}

This fixed the issue, and I thought it was worth pointing out as a separate answer since various other answers suggest adding a new POST route. This is an option but it's not necessary.

How to avoid java.util.ConcurrentModificationException when iterating through and removing elements from an ArrayList

        diffSeconds = diff / 1000 % 60;
        if(diffSeconds > 10) {

What's the difference between ngOnInit and ngAfterViewInit of Angular2?

Content is what is passed as children. View is the template of the current component.

The view is initialized before the content and ngAfterViewInit() is therefore called before ngAfterContentInit().

** ngAfterViewInit() is called when the bindings of the children directives (or components) have been checked for the first time. Hence its perfect for accessing and manipulating DOM with Angular 2 components. As @Günter Zöchbauer mentioned before is correct @ViewChild() hence runs fine inside it.

Example:

@Component({
    selector: 'widget-three',
    template: `<input #input1 type="text">`
})
export class WidgetThree{
    @ViewChild('input1') input1;

    constructor(private renderer:Renderer){}

    ngAfterViewInit(){
        this.renderer.invokeElementMethod(
            this.input1.nativeElement,
            'focus',
            []
        )
    }
}

ggplot with 2 y axes on each side and different scales

There are common use-cases dual y axes, e.g., the climatograph showing monthly temperature and precipitation. Here is a simple solution, generalized from Megatron's solution by allowing you to set the lower limit of the variables to something else than zero:

Example data:

climate <- tibble(
  Month = 1:12,
  Temp = c(-4,-4,0,5,11,15,16,15,11,6,1,-3),
  Precip = c(49,36,47,41,53,65,81,89,90,84,73,55)
  )

Set the following two values to values close to the limits of the data (you can play around with these to adjust the positions of the graphs; the axes will still be correct):

ylim.prim <- c(0, 180)   # in this example, precipitation
ylim.sec <- c(-4, 18)    # in this example, temperature

The following makes the necessary calculations based on these limits, and makes the plot itself:

b <- diff(ylim.prim)/diff(ylim.sec)
a <- ylim.prim[1] - b*ylim.sec[1]) # there was a bug here

ggplot(climate, aes(Month, Precip)) +
  geom_col() +
  geom_line(aes(y = a + Temp*b), color = "red") +
  scale_y_continuous("Precipitation", sec.axis = sec_axis(~ (. - a)/b, name = "Temperature")) +
  scale_x_continuous("Month", breaks = 1:12) +
  ggtitle("Climatogram for Oslo (1961-1990)")

Climatogram showing temperature as line and precipitation as barplot

If you want to make sure that the red line corresponds to the right-hand y axis, you can add a theme sentence to the code:

ggplot(climate, aes(Month, Precip)) +
  geom_col() +

Best way to save a trained model in PyTorch?

I've found this page on their github repo, I'll just paste the content here.

Recommended approach for saving a model

There are two main approaches for serializing and restoring a model.

The first (recommended) saves and loads only the model parameters:

torch.save(the_model.state_dict(), PATH)

Then later:

the_model = TheModelClass(*args, **kwargs)
the_model.load_state_dict(torch.load(PATH))

The second saves and loads the entire model:

torch.save(the_model, PATH)

Then later:

the_model = torch.load(PATH)

However in this case, the serialized data is bound to the specific classes and the exact directory structure used, so it can break in various ways when used in other projects, or after some serious refactors.

Converting 24 hour time to 12 hour time w/ AM & PM using Javascript

Here's a reasonably terse way to do it using a Prototype:

Date.prototype.getFormattedTime = function () {
    var hours = this.getHours() == 0 ? "12" : this.getHours() > 12 ? this.getHours() - 12 : this.getHours();
    var minutes = (this.getMinutes() < 10 ? "0" : "") + this.getMinutes();
    var ampm = this.getHours() < 12 ? "AM" : "PM";
    var formattedTime = hours + ":" + minutes + " " + ampm;
    return formattedTime;
}

Then all you have to do is convert your string value to a date and use the new method:

var stringValue = "February 04, 2011 19:00:00;
var dateValue = new Date(stringValue);
var formattedTime = dateValue.getFormattedTime();

Or in a single line:

var formattedTime = new Date("February 04, 2011 19:00:00").getFormattedTime();

Equivalent of waitForVisible/waitForElementPresent in Selenium WebDriver tests using Java?

For individual element the code below could be used:

private boolean isElementPresent(By by) {

            return true;
        } catch (NoSuchElementException e) {

Do you (really) write exception safe code?

First of all (as Neil stated), SEH is Microsoft's Structured Exception Handling. It is similar to but not identical to exception processing in C++. In fact, you have to enable C++ Exception Handling if you want it in Visual Studio - the default behavior does not guarantee that local objects are destroyed in all cases! In either case, Exception Handling is not really harder it is just different.

Now for your actual questions.

Do you really write exception safe code?

Yes. I strive for exception safe code in all cases. I evangelize using RAII techniques for scoped access to resources (e.g., boost::shared_ptr for memory, boost::lock_guard for locking). In general, consistent usage of RAII and scope guarding techniques will make exception safe code much easier to write. The trick is to learn what exists and how to apply it.

Are you sure your last "production ready" code is exception safe?

No. It is as safe as it is. I can say that I haven't seen a process fault due to an exception in several years of 24/7 activity. I don't expect perfect code, just well-written code. In addition to providing exception safety, the techniques above guarantee correctness in a way that is near impossible to achieve with try/catch blocks. If you are catching everything in your top control scope (thread, process, etc.), then you can be sure that you will continue to run in the face of exceptions (most of the time). The same techniques will also help you continue to run correctly in the face of exceptions without try/catch blocks everywhere.

Can you even be sure that it is?

Yes. You can be sure by a thorough code audit but no one really does that do they? Regular code reviews and careful developers go a long way to getting there though.

Do you know and/or actually use alternatives that work?

I have tried a few variations over the years such as encoding states in the upper bits (ala HRESULTs) or that horrible setjmp() ... longjmp() hack. Both of these break down in practice though in completely different ways.

In the end, if you get into the habit of applying a few techniques and carefully thinking about where you can actually do something in response to an exception, you will end up with very readable code that is exception safe. You can sum this up by following these rules:

  • You only want to see try/catch when you can do something about a specific exception
  • You almost never want to see a raw new or delete in code
  • Eschew std::sprintf, snprintf, and arrays in general - use std::ostringstream for formatting and replace arrays with std::vector and std::string
  • When in doubt, look for functionality in Boost or STL before rolling your own

I can only recommend that you learn how to use exceptions properly and forget about result codes if you plan on writing in C++. If you want to avoid exceptions, you might want to consider writing in another language that either does not have them or makes them safe. If you want to really learn how to fully utilize C++, read a few books from Herb Sutter, Nicolai Josuttis, and Scott Meyers.

How to use hex() without 0x in Python?

Use this code:

'{:x}'.format(int(line))

it allows you to specify a number of digits too:

'{:06x}'.format(123)
# '00007b'

For Python 2.6 use

'{0:x}'.format(int(line))

or

'{0:06x}'.format(int(line))

Loop in Jade (currently known as "Pug") template engine

An unusual but pretty way of doing it

Without index:

each _ in Array(5)
  = 'a'

Will print: aaaaa

With index:

each _, i in Array(5)
  = i

Will print: 01234

Notes: In the examples above, I have assigned the val parameter of jade's each iteration syntax to _ because it is required, but will always return undefined.

How to compare different branches in Visual Studio Code

'Microsoft.ACE.OLEDB.12.0' provider is not registered on the local machine

I had Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable already installed on my machine but was still receiving the Microsoft ACE OLEDB Provider error.

Then I recalled that I had upgraded to Office 2016 recently, so, may be I should try reinstalling Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable. And that fixed the problem on my machine.

So, if you have upgraded to different version of MS Office or even repaired/reinstalled your MS Office then try reinstalling Microsoft Access Database Engine 2010 Redistributable before wasting time with finding other fixes. Good luck!

NodeJS / Express: what is "app.use"?

As the name suggests, it acts as a middleware in your routing.

Let's say for any single route, you want to call multiple url or perform multiple functions internally before sending the response. you can use this middleware and pass your route and perform all internal operations.

syntax:
app.use( function(req, res, next) {
  // code
 next();
})

next is optional, you can use to pass the result using this parameter to the next function.

CURL Command Line URL Parameters

Felipsmartins is correct.

It is worth mentioning that it is because you cannot really use the -d/--data option if this is not a POST request. But this is still possible if you use the -G option.

Which means you can do this:

curl -X DELETE -G 'http://localhost:5000/locations' -d 'id=3'

Here it is a bit silly but when you are on the command line and you have a lot of parameters, it is a lot tidier.

I am saying this because cURL commands are usually quite long, so it is worth making it on more than one line escaping the line breaks.

curl -X DELETE -G \
'http://localhost:5000/locations' \
-d id=3 \
-d name=Mario \
-d surname=Bros

This is obviously a lot more comfortable if you use zsh. I mean when you need to re-edit the previous command because zsh lets you go line by line. (just saying)

Hope it helps.

Could not find folder 'tools' inside SDK

If I get you correctly you have just downloaded Android sdk and want to configure it working with Eclipse. I think you miss one step from the installation of the sdk:
1) you download it
2) you extract it somewhere
3) then go to the specified directory and start AndroidManager (or was it just android??). There you specify you need platform-tools and the manager will configure that for you. This will also provide you with the 'adb' executable which is crucial for the Android developement.

After that you install ADT (which I think you already did) and from Eclipse preferences -> Android options you get a place to specify where your android-sdk is. If you specify it after you did the 'step 3' you should be good to go.

I am not 100% sure I got it correctly and what your state is, so please forgive me if my comment is irrelevant. If I am wrong I will be happy to help if you provide some more details.

Something I am completely sure is that you shouldn't need to create the folder 'tools' by yourself.

PS: The description I gave is for newer versions of android sdk, but if you are encountering a problem with older version I will recommend you to start from scratch with newer version. It shouldn't take you that long time.

Why do access tokens expire?

This is very much implementation specific, but the general idea is to allow providers to issue short term access tokens with long term refresh tokens. Why?

  • Many providers support bearer tokens which are very weak security-wise. By making them short-lived and requiring refresh, they limit the time an attacker can abuse a stolen token.
  • Large scale deployment don't want to perform a database lookup every API call, so instead they issue self-encoded access token which can be verified by decryption. However, this also means there is no way to revoke these tokens so they are issued for a short time and must be refreshed.
  • The refresh token requires client authentication which makes it stronger. Unlike the above access tokens, it is usually implemented with a database lookup.

How to set maximum fullscreen in vmware?

It sounds to me as if you actually mean "linux guests" and not "linux hosts".

But in any case, I suspect you did not install the VMWare Tools: doubleclick on that icon on the Desktop that can be seen on your screenshot. It will install some drivers that communicate with VMWare that, among other things, allow to adjust the screen resolution dynamically.

When the installation process is finished, you'll most likely have to reboot the VM.

What is the difference between display: inline and display: inline-block?

splattne's answer probably covered most of everything so I won't repeat the same thing, but: inline and inline-block behave differently with the direction CSS property.

Within the next snippet you see one two (in order) is rendered, like it does in LTR layouts. I suspect the browser here auto-detected the English part as LTR text and rendered it from left to right.

_x000D_
_x000D_
body {_x000D_
  text-align: right;_x000D_
  direction: rtl;_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
h2 {_x000D_
  display: block; /* just being explicit */_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_

  display: inline;_x000D_
}
_x000D_
<h2>_x000D_

  <span>one</span>_x000D_
  <span>two</span>_x000D_
</h2>
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

However, if I go ahead and set display to inline-block, the browser appears to respect the direction property and render the elements from right to left in order, so that two one is rendered.

_x000D_
_x000D_
body {_x000D_
  text-align: right;_x000D_
  direction: rtl;_x000D_

  display: inline-block;_x000D_
}

I don't know if there are any other quirks to this, I only found about this empirically on Chrome.

Difference between innerText, innerHTML and value?

The examples below refer to the following HTML snippet:

<div id="test">
   Warning: This element contains <code>code</code> and <strong>strong language</strong>.
</div>

The node will be referenced by the following JavaScript:

var x = document.getElementById('test');

element.innerHTML

Sets or gets the HTML syntax describing the element's descendants

x.innerHTML
// => "
// =>   Warning: This element contains <code>code</code> and <strong>strong language</strong>.
// => "

This is part of the W3C's DOM Parsing and Serialization Specification. Note it's a property of Element objects.

node.innerText

Sets or gets the text between the start and end tags of the object

x.innerText
// => "Warning: This element contains code and strong language."
  • innerText was introduced by Microsoft and was for a while unsupported by Firefox. In August of 2016, innerText was adopted by the WHATWG and was added to Firefox in v45.
  • innerText gives you a style-aware, representation of the text that tries to match what's rendered in by the browser this means:
    • innerText applies text-transform and white-space rules
    • innerText trims white space between lines and adds line breaks between items
    • innerText will not return text for invisible items
  • innerText will return textContent for elements that are never rendered like <style /> and `
  • Property of Node elements

node.textContent

Gets or sets the text content of a node and its descendants.

x.textContent
// => "
// => Warning: This element contains code and strong language.
// => "

While this is a W3C standard, it is not supported by IE < 9.

  • Is not aware of styling and will therefore return content hidden by CSS
  • Does not trigger a reflow (therefore more performant)
  • Property of Node elements

node.value

This one depends on the element that you've targeted. For the above example, x returns an HTMLDivElement object, which does not have a value property defined.

x.value // => null

Input tags (<input />), for example, do define a value property, which refers to the "current value in the control".

<input id="example-input" type="text" value="default" />
<script>
  document.getElementById('example-input').value //=> "default"
  // User changes input to "something"
  document.getElementById('example-input').value //=> "something"
</script>

From the docs:

Note: for certain input types the returned value might not match the value the user has entered. For example, if the user enters a non-numeric value into an <input type="number">, the returned value might be an empty string instead.

Pretty git branch graphs

For more detailed textual output, please try:

git log --graph --date-order -C -M --pretty=format:"<%h> %ad [%an] %Cgreen%d%Creset %s" --all --date=short

You can write alias in $HOME/.gitconfig

[alias]
    graph = log --graph --date-order -C -M --pretty=format:\"<%h> %ad [%an] %Cgreen%d%Creset %s\" --all --date=short

Java List.contains(Object with field value equal to x)

Binary Search

You can use Collections.binarySearch to search an element in your list (assuming the list is sorted):

Collections.binarySearch(list, new YourObject("a1", "b",
                "c"), new Comparator<YourObject>() {

            @Override
            public int compare(YourObject o1, YourObject o2) {
                return o1.getName().compareTo(o2.getName());
            }
        });

which will return a negative number if the object is not present in the collection or else it will return the index of the object. With this you can search for objects with different searching strategies.

What does it mean when MySQL is in the state "Sending data"?

This is quite a misleading status. It should be called "reading and filtering data".

This means that MySQL has some data stored on the disk (or in memory) which is yet to be read and sent over. It may be the table itself, an index, a temporary table, a sorted output etc.

If you have a 1M records table (without an index) of which you need only one record, MySQL will still output the status as "sending data" while scanning the table, despite the fact it has not sent anything yet.

How to find substring inside a string (or how to grep a variable)?

expr is used instead of [ rather than inside it, and variables are only expanded inside double quotes, so try this:

if expr match "$LIST" "$SOURCE"; then

But I'm not really clear what SOURCE is supposed to represent.

It looks like your code will read in a pattern from standard input, and exit if it matches a database alias, otherwise it will echo "ok". Is that what you want?

ActiveModel::ForbiddenAttributesError when creating new user

If using ActiveAdmin don't forget that there is also a permit_params in the model register block:

ActiveAdmin.register Api::V1::Person do
  permit_params :name, :address, :etc
end

These need to be set along with those in the controller:

def api_v1_person_params
  params.require(:api_v1_person).permit(:name, :address, :etc)
end

Otherwise you will get the error:

CSS3 transition on click using pure CSS

Method #1: CSS :focus pseudo-class

As pure CSS solution, you could achieve sort of the effect by using a tabindex attribute for the image, and :focus pseudo-class as follows:

<img class="crossRotate" src="http://placehold.it/100" tabindex="1" />
.crossRotate {
    outline: 0;
    /* other styles... */
}

.crossRotate:focus {
  -webkit-transform: rotate(45deg);
  -ms-transform: rotate(45deg);
  transform: rotate(45deg);
}

WORKING DEMO.

Note: Using this approach, the image gets rotated onclick (focused), to negate the rotation, you'll need to click somewhere out of the image (blured).

Method #2: Hidden input & :checked pseudo-class

This is one of my favorite methods. In this approach, there's a hidden checkbox input and a <label> element which wraps the image.

Once you click on the image, the hidden input is checked because of using for attribute for the label.

Hence by using the :checked pseudo-class and adjacent sibling selector +, we could get the image to be rotated:

<input type="checkbox" id="hacky-input">

<label for="hacky-input">
  <img class="crossRotate" src="http://placehold.it/100">
</label>
#hacky-input {
  display: none; /* Hide the input */
}

#hacky-input:checked + label img.crossRotate {
  -webkit-transform: rotate(45deg);
  -ms-transform: rotate(45deg);
  transform: rotate(45deg);

WORKING DEMO #1.

WORKING DEMO #2 (Applying the rotate to the label gives a better experience).

Method #3: Toggling a class via JavaScript

If using JavaScript/jQuery is an option, you could toggle a .active class by .toggleClass() to trigger the rotation effect, as follows:

$('.crossRotate').on('click', function(){
    $(this).toggleClass('active');
});
.crossRotate.active {
    /* vendor-prefixes here... */
    transform: rotate(45deg);
}

How to search JSON tree with jQuery

var json = {
    "people": {
        "person": [{
            "name": "Peter",
            "age": 43,
            "sex": "male"},
        {
            "name": "Zara",
            "age": 65,
            "sex": "female"}]
    }
};
$.each(json.people.person, function(i, v) {
    if (v.name == "Peter") {
        alert(v.age);
        return;
    }
});

Example.

Based on this answer, you could use something like:

$(function() {
    var json = {
        "people": {
            "person": [{
                "name": "Peter",
                "age": 43,
                "sex": "male"},
            {
                "name": "Zara",
                "age": 65,
                "sex": "female"}]
        }
    };
    $.each(json.people.person, function(i, v) {
        if (v.name.search(new RegExp(/peter/i)) != -1) {
            alert(v.age);
            return;
        }
    });
});

Example 2

How to use multiple conditions (With AND) in IIF expressions in ssrs

You don't need an IIF() at all here. The comparisons return true or false anyway.

Also, since this row visibility is on a group row, make sure you use the same aggregate function on the fields as you use in the fields in the row. So if your group row shows sums, then you'd put this in the Hidden property.

=Sum(Fields!OpeningStock.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!GrossDispatched.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!TransferOutToMW.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!TransferOutToDW.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!TransferOutToOW.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!NetDispatched.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!QtySold.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!StockAdjustment.Value) = 0 And
Sum(Fields!ClosingStock.Value) = 0

But with the above version, if one record has value 1 and one has value -1 and all others are zero then sum is also zero and the row could be hidden. If that's not what you want you could write a more complex expression:

=Sum(
    IIF(
        Fields!OpeningStock.Value=0 AND
        Fields!GrossDispatched.Value=0 AND
        Fields!TransferOutToMW.Value=0 AND
        Fields!TransferOutToDW.Value=0 AND
        Fields!TransferOutToOW.Value=0 AND
        Fields!NetDispatched.Value=0 AND
        Fields!QtySold.Value=0 AND
        Fields!StockAdjustment.Value=0 AND
        Fields!ClosingStock.Value=0,
        0,
        1
    )
) = 0

This is essentially a fancy way of counting the number of rows in which any field is not zero. If every field is zero for every row in the group then the expression returns true and the row is hidden.

Java Enum Methods - return opposite direction enum

This works:

public enum Direction {
    NORTH, SOUTH, EAST, WEST;

    public Direction oppose() {
        switch(this) {
            case NORTH: return SOUTH;
            case SOUTH: return NORTH;
            case EAST:  return WEST;
            case WEST:  return EAST;
        }
        throw new RuntimeException("Case not implemented");
    }
}

Distinct pair of values SQL

if you want to filter the tuples you can use on this way:

select distinct (case a > b then (a,b) else (b,a) end) from pairs

the good stuff is you don't have to use group by.

Read JSON data in a shell script

Similarly using Bash regexp. Shall be able to snatch any key/value pair.

key="Body"
re="\"($key)\": \"([^\"]*)\""

while read -r l; do
    if [[ $l =~ $re ]]; then
        name="${BASH_REMATCH[1]}"
        value="${BASH_REMATCH[2]}"
        echo "$name=$value"
    else
        echo "No match"
    fi
done

Regular expression can be tuned to match multiple spaces/tabs or newline(s). Wouldn't work if value has embedded ". This is an illustration. Better to use some "industrial" parser :)

How to create a simple map using JavaScript/JQuery

var map = {'myKey1':myObj1, 'mykey2':myObj2};
// You don't need any get function, just use
map['mykey1']

Git fetch remote branch

If you download the repository with git clone <repo_url> -b <branch> (only cloning certaing branch), you should modify the <repo_name>/.git/config file. Replace or modify the line that references the fetch target of the [remote "origin"] section to let the command git fetch --all discover all branches:

[remote "origin"]
        url = <repo_git_url>
        fetch = +refs/heads/master:refs/remotes/origin/master

Be sure to set the fetch parameter point to /heads/master.

Care with git fetch --all because this will fetch all, so may take a long time.

How to get all options in a drop-down list by Selenium WebDriver using C#?

 WebElement element = driver.findElement(By.id("inst_state"));
        Select s = new Select(element);
        List <WebElement> elementcount = s.getOptions();

        System.out.println(elementcount.size());
        for(int i=0 ;i<elementcount.size();i++)
        {
            String value = elementcount.get(i).getText();
            System.out.println(value);

        }

Get IP address of visitors using Flask for Python

If you use Nginx behind other balancer, for instance AWS Application Balancer, HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR returns list of addresses. It can be fixed like that:

if 'X-Forwarded-For' in request.headers:
    proxy_data = request.headers['X-Forwarded-For']
    ip_list = proxy_data.split(',')
    user_ip = ip_list[0] # first address in list is User IP
else:
    user_ip = request.remote_addr  # For local development

Git push failed, "Non-fast forward updates were rejected"

Add --force to your command line if you are sure you want to push. E.g. use git push origin --force (I recommend the command line as you will find much more support from other users with the command line. Also this may not be possible with SmartGit.) See this site for more information: http://help.github.com/remotes/

AppendChild() is not a function javascript

Try the following:

var div = document.createElement("div");
div.innerHTML = "topdiv";
div.appendChild(element);
document.body.appendChild(div);

Most efficient way to prepend a value to an array

f you need to preserve the old array, slice the old one and unshift the new value(s) to the beginning of the slice.

var oldA=[4,5,6];
newA=oldA.slice(0);
newA.unshift(1,2,3)

oldA+'\n'+newA

/*  returned value:
4,5,6
1,2,3,4,5,6
*/

How to break/exit from a each() function in JQuery?

Return false from the anonymous function:

$(xml).find("strengths").each(function() {
  // Code
  // To escape from this block based on a condition:
  if (something) return false;
});

From the documentation of the each method:

Returning 'false' from within the each function completely stops the loop through all of the elements (this is like using a 'break' with a normal loop). Returning 'true' from within the loop skips to the next iteration (this is like using a 'continue' with a normal loop).

What does Ruby have that Python doesn't, and vice versa?

Ruby has builtin continuation support using callcc.

Hence you can implement cool things like the amb-operator

Trying to get the average of a count resultset

You just can put your query as a subquery:

SELECT avg(count)
  FROM
    (
    SELECT COUNT (*) AS Count
      FROM Table T
     WHERE T.Update_time =
               (SELECT MAX (B.Update_time )
                  FROM Table B
                 WHERE (B.Id = T.Id))
    GROUP BY T.Grouping
    ) as counts

Edit: I think this should be the same:

SELECT count(*) / count(distinct T.Grouping)
  FROM Table T
 WHERE T.Update_time =
           (SELECT MAX (B.Update_time)
              FROM Table B
             WHERE (B.Id = T.Id))

Deleting all files from a folder using PHP?

If you want to delete everything from folder (including subfolders) use this combination of array_map, unlink and glob:

array_map( 'unlink', array_filter((array) glob("path/to/temp/*") ) );

This call can also handle empty directories ( thanks for the tip, @mojuba!)

Conda activate not working?

To use "conda activate" via Windows CMD, not the Anaconda Prompt:
(in response to okorng's question, although using the Anaconda Prompt is the preferred option)

First, we need to add the activate.bat script to your path:
Via CMD:

set PATH=%PATH%;<your_path_to_anaconda_installation>\Scripts

Or via Control Panel, open "User Accounts" and choose "Change my environment variables".

Then calling directly from Windows CMD:

activate <environment_name>

without using the prefix "conda".

(Tested on Windows 7 Enterprise with Anaconda3-5.2.0)

is there a 'block until condition becomes true' function in java?

You could use a semaphore.

While the condition is not met, another thread acquires the semaphore.
Your thread would try to acquire it with acquireUninterruptibly()
or tryAcquire(int permits, long timeout, TimeUnit unit) and would be blocked.

When the condition is met, the semaphore is also released and your thread would acquire it.

You could also try using a SynchronousQueue or a CountDownLatch.

Setting top and left CSS attributes

      height: 120px;

'cannot open git-upload-pack' error in Eclipse when cloning or pushing git repository

Finally I made it work thanks to the steps outlined in the Eclipse forum:

Set up the SSH key stuff

  1. Download and install mysys git according to the github instructions at http://help.github.com/win-git-installation/
  2. In C:/Users/you/ssh hide any existing keys (id_rsa and id_rsa.pub) in a subdirectory. If the ssh directory does not exist, create it. Of course, "you" is your username as the OS knows you.
  3. From the start menu, run Git-Bash command shell (a regular DOS command shell will not work).
  4. In the Git-Bash shell generate an rsa key based on your email (the one you registered at github): ssh-keygen -t rsa -C "[email protected]" and enter your pass phrase and confirm when asked.
  5. The previous step should have created C:/User/you/ssh/id_rsa.pub which you can now open in a text editor and copy. At github, go to account settings, SSH Keys, add a key and paste this in the key box.
  6. In Git-Bash again (notice the back-ticks in the next line): eval `ssh-agent` ssh-add C:/User/you/ssh/id_rsa ssh [email protected]

Here is what you just did: You ran the ssh-agent which is needed by ssh-add. Then you used ssh-add to make note of the location of your key. Then you tried to ssh to GitHub. The response to this last command should be that you have successfully authenticated at GitHub but that you don't have shell access. This is just an authentication test. If the authentication was not successful, you'll have to sort that out. Try the verbose version:

ssh -v [email protected]

Assuming this worked....

In Eclipse, configure the remote push

  1. Window > Show View > Git > Git Repositories will add a repository explorer window.
  2. In the repository window, select the repository and expand and right-click Remotes and choose Create Remote.
  3. Copy the GitHub repository URI from the GitHub repository page and paste it in the URI box.
  4. Select ssh as the protocol but then go back to the URI box and add "git+" at the beginning so it looks like this:

    git+ssh://[email protected]/UserName/ProjectName.git

  5. In the Repository Path box, remove the leading slash

  6. Hit Next and cross your fingers. If your get "auth fail", restart Eclipse and try step 5 again.
  7. When you get past the authentication, in the next dialog select "master" for source ref, click "Add all branches spec" and "Finish".

Instead of using SSH [email protected] I did it with SSH [email protected].

Now I can push and import without any problem.

RS256 vs HS256: What's the difference?

short answer, specific to OAuth2,

  • HS256 user client secret to generate the token signature and same secret is required to validate the token in back-end. So you should have a copy of that secret in your back-end server to verify the signature.
  • RS256 use public key encryption to sign the token.Signature(hash) will create using private key and it can verify using public key. So, no need of private key or client secret to store in back-end server, but back-end server will fetch the public key from openid configuration url in your tenant (https://[tenant]/.well-known/openid-configuration) to verify the token. KID parameter inside the access_toekn will use to detect the correct key(public) from openid-configuration.

Plotting power spectrum in python

if rate is the sampling rate(Hz), then np.linspace(0, rate/2, n) is the frequency array of every point in fft. You can use rfft to calculate the fft in your data is real values:

import numpy as np
import pylab as pl
rate = 30.0
t = np.arange(0, 10, 1/rate)
x = np.sin(2*np.pi*4*t) + np.sin(2*np.pi*7*t) + np.random.randn(len(t))*0.2
p = 20*np.log10(np.abs(np.fft.rfft(x)))
f = np.linspace(0, rate/2, len(p))
plot(f, p)

enter image description here

signal x contains 4Hz & 7Hz sin wave, so there are two peaks at 4Hz & 7Hz.

Understanding repr( ) function in Python

str() is used for creating output for end user while repr() is used for debuggin development.And it's represent the official of object.

Example:

>>> import datetime
>>> today = datetime.datetime.now()
>>> str(today)
'2018-04-08 18:00:15.178404'
>>> repr(today)
'datetime.datetime(2018, 4, 8, 18, 3, 21, 167886)'

From output we see that repr() shows the official representation of date object.

How can I disable the bootstrap hover color for links?

If you like an ugly hacks which you should never do in real worlds systems; you could strip all :hover style rules from document.styleSheets.

Just go through all CSS styles with JavaScript and remove all rules, which contain ":hover" in their selector. I use this method when I need to remove :hover styles from bootstrap 2.

_.each(document.styleSheets, function (sheet) {
    var rulesToLoose = [];
    _.each(sheet.cssRules, function (rule, index) {
        if (rule.selectorText && rule.selectorText.indexOf(':hover') > 0) {
            rulesToLoose.push(index);
        }
    });

    _.each(rulesToLoose.reverse(), function (index) {
        if (sheet.deleteRule) {
            sheet.deleteRule(index);
        } else if (sheet.removeRule) {
            sheet.removeRule(index);
        }
    });
});

I did use underscore for iterating arrays, but one could write those with pure js loop as well:

for (var i = 0; i < document.styleSheets.length; i++) {}

Xcode 5 and iOS 7: Architecture and Valid architectures

How to give a Blob uploaded as FormData a file name?

Adding this here as it doesn't seem to be here.

Aside from the excellent solution of form.append("blob",blob, filename); you can also turn the blob into a File instance:

var blob = new Blob([JSON.stringify([0,1,2])], {type : 'application/json'});
var fileOfBlob = new File([blob], 'aFileName.json');
form.append("upload", fileOfBlob);

Get date from input form within PHP

Validate the INPUT.

$time = strtotime($_POST['dateFrom']);
if ($time) {
  $new_date = date('Y-m-d', $time);
  echo $new_date;
} else {
   echo 'Invalid Date: ' . $_POST['dateFrom'];
  // fix it.
}

Create table with jQuery - append

To add multiple columns and rows, we can also do a string concatenation. Not the best way, but it sure works.

             var resultstring='<table>';
      for(var j=0;j<arr.length;j++){
              //array arr contains the field names in this case
          resultstring+= '<th>'+ arr[j] + '</th>';
      }
      $(resultset).each(function(i, result) {
          // resultset is in json format
          resultstring+='<tr>';
          for(var j=0;j<arr.length;j++){
              resultstring+='<td>'+ result[arr[j]]+ '</td>';
          }
          resultstring+='</tr>';
      });
      resultstring+='</table>';
          $('#resultdisplay').html(resultstring);

This also allows you to add rows and columns to the table dynamically, without hardcoding the fieldnames.

Render a string in HTML and preserve spaces and linebreaks

As you mentioned on @Developer 's answer, I would probably HTML-encode on user input. If you are worried about XSS, you probably never need the user's input in it's original form, so you might as well escape it (and replace spaces and newlines while you are at it).

Note that escaping on input means you should either use @Html.Raw or create an MvcHtmlString to render that particular input.

You can also try

System.Security.SecurityElement.Escape(userInput)

but I think it won't escape spaces either. So in that case, I suggest just do a .NET

System.Security.SecurityElement.Escape(userInput).Replace(" ", "&nbsp;").Replace("\n", "<br>")

on user input. And if you want to dig deeper into usability, perhaps you can do an XML parse of the user's input (or play with regular expressions) to only allow a predefined set of tags. For instance, allow

<p>, <span>, <strong>

... but don't allow

<script> or <iframe>

?: operator (the 'Elvis operator') in PHP

It evaluates to the left operand if the left operand is truthy, and the right operand otherwise.

In pseudocode,

foo = bar ?: baz;

roughly resolves to

foo = bar ? bar : baz;

or

if (bar) {
    foo = bar;
} else {
    foo = baz;
}

with the difference that bar will only be evaluated once.

You can also use this to do a "self-check" of foo as demonstrated in the code example you posted:

foo = foo ?: bar;

This will assign bar to foo if foo is null or falsey, else it will leave foo unchanged.

Some more examples:

<?php
    var_dump(5 ?: 0); // 5
    var_dump(false ?: 0); // 0
    var_dump(null ?: 'foo'); // 'foo'
    var_dump(true ?: 123); // true
    var_dump('rock' ?: 'roll'); // 'rock'
?>

By the way, it's called the Elvis operator.

What's the proper way to install pip, virtualenv, and distribute for Python?

On Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install python-virtualenv

The package python-pip is a dependency, so it will be installed as well.

Can you target <br /> with css?

BR is an inline element, not a block element.

So, you need:

 br.Underline{
    border-bottom:1px dashed black;
    display: block;
  }

Otherwise, browsers that are a little pickier about such things will refuse to apply borders to your BR elements, since inline elements don't have borders, padding, or margins.

Deleting a pointer in C++

There is a rule in C++, for every new there is a delete.

  1. Why won't the first case work? Seems the most straightforward use to use and delete a pointer? The error says the memory wasn't allocated but 'cout' returned an address.

new is never called. So the address that cout prints is the address of the memory location of myVar, or the value assigned to myPointer in this case. By writing:

myPointer = &myVar;

you say:

myPointer = The address of where the data in myVar is stored

  1. On the second example the error is not being triggered but doing a cout of the value of myPointer still returns a memory address?

It returns an address that points to a memory location that has been deleted. Because first you create the pointer and assign its value to myPointer, second you delete it, third you print it. So unless you assign another value to myPointer, the deleted address will remain.

  1. Does #3 really work? Seems to work to me, the pointer is no longer storing an address, is this the proper way to delete a pointer?

NULL equals 0, you delete 0, so you delete nothing. And it's logic that it prints 0 because you did:

myPointer = NULL;

which equals:

myPointer = 0;

Get parent directory of running script

This is a function that I use. Created it once so I always have this functionality:

function getDir(){
    $directory = dirname(__FILE__);
    $directory = explode("/",$directory);
    $findTarget = 0;
    $targetPath = "";
    foreach($directory as $dir){
        if($findTarget == 1){
            $targetPath = "".$targetPath."/".$dir."";
        }
        if($dir == "public_html"){
            $findTarget = 1;
        }
    }
    return "http://www.".$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME']."".$targetPath."";
}

How does String substring work in Swift

Same frustration, this should not be that hard...

I compiled this example of getting positions for substring(s) from larger text:

//
// Play with finding substrings returning an array of the non-unique words and positions in text
//
//

import UIKit

let Bigstring = "Why is it so hard to find substrings in Swift3"
let searchStrs : Array<String>? = ["Why", "substrings", "Swift3"]

FindSubString(inputStr: Bigstring, subStrings: searchStrs)

func FindSubString(inputStr : String, subStrings: Array<String>?) ->    Array<(String, Int, Int)> {
    var resultArray : Array<(String, Int, Int)> = []
    for i: Int in 0...(subStrings?.count)!-1 {
        if inputStr.contains((subStrings?[i])!) {
            let range: Range<String.Index> = inputStr.range(of: subStrings![i])!
            let lPos = inputStr.distance(from: inputStr.startIndex, to: range.lowerBound)
            let uPos = inputStr.distance(from: inputStr.startIndex, to: range.upperBound)
            let element = ((subStrings?[i])! as String, lPos, uPos)
            resultArray.append(element)
        }
    }
    for words in resultArray {
        print(words)
    }
    return resultArray
}

returns ("Why", 0, 3) ("substrings", 26, 36) ("Swift3", 40, 46)
