Variables within app.config/web.config

I came up with this solution:

  1. In the application Settings.settings I defined a variable ConfigurationBase (with type=string Scope=Application)
  2. I introduced a variable in the target attributes in the Settings.settings, all those attributes had to be set to Scope=User
  3. In the app.xaml.cs I read out the value if the ConfigurationBase
  4. In the app.xaml.cs I replaced all variables with the ConfigurationBase value. In order to replace the values at run-time the attributes had to be set to Scopr=User

I'm not really happy with this solution because I have to change all attributes manually, if I add a new one I have to regard it in the app.xaml.cs.

Here a code snippet from the App.xaml.cs:

string configBase = Settings.Default.ConfigurationBase;
Settings.Default.CommonOutput_Directory = Settings.Default.CommonOutput_Directory.Replace("${ConfigurationBase}", configBase);

UPDATE

Just found an improvement (again a code snippet from the app.xaml.cs):

string configBase = Settings.Default.ConfigurationBase;

foreach (SettingsProperty settingsProperty in Settings.Default.Properties)
{
    if (!settingsProperty.IsReadOnly && settings.Default[settingsProperty.Name] is string)
    {
        Settings.Default[settingsProperty.Name] = ((string)Settings.Default[settingsProperty.Name]).Replace("${ConfigurationBase}", configBase);
    }
}

Now the replacements work for all attributes in my settings that have Type=string and Scope=User. I think I like it this way.

UPDATE2

Apparently setting Scope=Application is not required when running over the properties.

What does "Table does not support optimize, doing recreate + analyze instead" mean?

OPTIMIZE TABLE works fine with InnoDB engine according to the official support article : http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.5/en/optimize-table.html

You'll notice that optimize InnoDB tables will rebuild table structure and update index statistics (something like ALTER TABLE).

Keep in mind that this message could be an informational mention only and the very important information is the status of your query : just OK !

mysql> OPTIMIZE TABLE foo;

Click in OK button inside an Alert (Selenium IDE)

assertAlert ought to do the trick. I see in the docs that alerts generated in a page's OnLoad event handler cannot be scripted this way (and have experienced it myself, alas, due to the ASP.NET page lifecycle). Could that be what you're running into?

Is having an 'OR' in an INNER JOIN condition a bad idea?

You can use UNION ALL instead.

What is the difference between Cygwin and MinGW?

Wikipedia Says:

MinGW forked from version 1.3.3 of Cygwin. Although both Cygwin and MinGW can be used to port UNIX software to Windows, they have different approaches: Cygwin aims to provide a complete POSIX layer that provides emulations of several system calls and libraries that exist on Linux, UNIX, and the BSD variants. The POSIX layer runs on top of Windows, sacrificing performance where necessary for compatibility. Accordingly, this approach requires Windows programs written with Cygwin to run on top of a copylefted compatibility library that must be distributed with the program, along with the program's source code. MinGW aims to provide native functionality and performance via direct Windows API calls. Unlike Cygwin, MinGW does not require a compatibility layer DLL and thus programs do not need to be distributed with source code.

Because MinGW is dependent upon Windows API calls, it cannot provide a full POSIX API; it is unable to compile some UNIX applications that can be compiled with Cygwin. Specifically, this applies to applications that require POSIX functionality like fork(), mmap() or ioctl() and those that expect to be run in a POSIX environment. Applications written using a cross-platform library that has itself been ported to MinGW, such as SDL, wxWidgets, Qt, or GTK+, will usually compile as easily in MinGW as they would in Cygwin.

The combination of MinGW and MSYS provides a small, self-contained environment that can be loaded onto removable media without leaving entries in the registry or files on the computer. Cygwin Portable provides a similar feature. By providing more functionality, Cygwin becomes more complicated to install and maintain.

It is also possible to cross-compile Windows applications with MinGW-GCC under POSIX systems. This means that developers do not need a Windows installation with MSYS to compile software that will run on Windows without Cygwin.

Java Map equivalent in C#

Dictionary<,> is the equivalent. While it doesn't have a Get(...) method, it does have an indexed property called Item which you can access in C# directly using index notation:

class Test {
  Dictionary<int,String> entities;

  public String getEntity(int code) {
    return this.entities[code];
  }
}

If you want to use a custom key type then you should consider implementing IEquatable<> and overriding Equals(object) and GetHashCode() unless the default (reference or struct) equality is sufficient for determining equality of keys. You should also make your key type immutable to prevent weird things happening if a key is mutated after it has been inserted into a dictionary (e.g. because the mutation caused its hash code to change).

How do I define global variables in CoffeeScript?

You can pass -b option when you compile code via coffee-script under node.js. The compiled code will be the same as on coffeescript.org.

Common elements comparison between 2 lists

I compared each of method that each answer mentioned. At this moment I use python 3.6.3 for this implementation. This is the code that I have used:

import time
import random
from decimal import Decimal

def method1():
    common_elements = [x for x in li1_temp if x in li2_temp]
     print(len(common_elements))

def method2():
    common_elements = (x for x in li1_temp if x in li2_temp)
    print(len(list(common_elements)))

def method3():
    common_elements = set(li1_temp) & set(li2_temp)
    print(len(common_elements))

def method4():
    common_elements = set(li1_temp).intersection(li2_temp)
    print(len(common_elements))

if __name__ == "__main__":
    li1 = []
    li2 = []
    for i in range(100000):
        li1.append(random.randint(0, 10000))
        li2.append(random.randint(0, 10000))

    li1_temp = list(set(li1))
    li2_temp = list(set(li2))

    methods = [method1, method2, method3, method4]
    for m in methods:
        start = time.perf_counter()
        m()
        end = time.perf_counter()
        print(Decimal((end - start)))

If you run this code you can see that if you use list or generator(if you iterate over generator, not just use it. I did this when I forced generator to print length of it), you get nearly same performance. But if you use set you get much better performance. Also if you use intersection method you will get a little bit better performance. the result of each method in my computer is listed bellow:

  1. method1: 0.8150673999999999974619413478649221360683441
  2. method2: 0.8329545000000001531148541289439890533685684

phpMyAdmin + CentOS 6.0 - Forbidden

I had the same issue for two days now. Disabled SELinux and everything but nothing helped. And I realize it just may not be smart to disable security for a small fix. Then I came upon this article - http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/SELinux/ that explains how SELinux operates. So this is what I did and it fixed my problem.

  1. Enable access to your main phpmyadmin directory by going to parent directory of phpmyadmin (mine was html) and typing:

    chcon -v --type=httpd_sys_content_t phpmyadmin

  2. Now do the same for the index.php by typing:

    chcon -v --type=httpd_sys_content_t phpmyadmin/index.php

    Now go back and check if you are getting a blank page. If you are, then you are on the right track. If not, go back and check your httpd.config directory settings. Once you do get the blank page with no warnings, proceed.

  3. Now recurse through all the files in your phpmyadmin directory by running:

    chron -Rv --type=httpd_sys_content_t phpmyadmin/*

Go back to your phpmyadmin page and see if you are seeing what you need. If you are running a web server that's accessible from outside your network, make sure that you reset your SELinux to the proper security level. Hope this helps!

Mock HttpContext.Current in Test Init Method

I know this is an older subject, however Mocking a MVC application for unit tests is something we do on very regular basis.

I just wanted to add my experiences Mocking a MVC 3 application using Moq 4 after upgrading to Visual Studio 2013. None of the unit tests were working in debug mode and the HttpContext was showing "could not evaluate expression" when trying to peek at the variables.

Turns out visual studio 2013 has issues evaluating some objects. To get debugging mocked web applications working again, I had to check the "Use Managed Compatibility Mode" in Tools=>Options=>Debugging=>General settings.

I generally do something like this:

public static class FakeHttpContext
{
    public static void SetFakeContext(this Controller controller)
    {

        var httpContext = MakeFakeContext();
        ControllerContext context =
        new ControllerContext(
        new RequestContext(httpContext,
        new RouteData()), controller);
        controller.ControllerContext = context;
    }

    private static HttpContextBase MakeFakeContext()
    {
        var context = new Mock<HttpContextBase>();
        var request = new Mock<HttpRequestBase>();
        var response = new Mock<HttpResponseBase>();
        var session = new Mock<HttpSessionStateBase>();
        var server = new Mock<HttpServerUtilityBase>();
        var user = new Mock<IPrincipal>();
        var identity = new Mock<IIdentity>();

        context.Setup(c=> c.Request).Returns(request.Object);
        context.Setup(c=> c.Response).Returns(response.Object);
        context.Setup(c=> c.Session).Returns(session.Object);
        context.Setup(c=> c.Server).Returns(server.Object);
        context.Setup(c=> c.User).Returns(user.Object);
        user.Setup(c=> c.Identity).Returns(identity.Object);
        identity.Setup(i => i.IsAuthenticated).Returns(true);
        identity.Setup(i => i.Name).Returns("admin");

        return context.Object;
    }

}

And initiating the context like this

FakeHttpContext.SetFakeContext(moController);

And calling the Method in the controller straight forward

long lReportStatusID = -1;
var result = moController.CancelReport(lReportStatusID);

How do I generate a stream from a string?

A good combination of String extensions:

public static byte[] GetBytes(this string str)
{
    byte[] bytes = new byte[str.Length * sizeof(char)];
    System.Buffer.BlockCopy(str.ToCharArray(), 0, bytes, 0, bytes.Length);
    return bytes;
}

public static Stream ToStream(this string str)
{
    Stream StringStream = new MemoryStream();
    StringStream.Read(str.GetBytes(), 0, str.Length);
    return StringStream;
}

Add content to a new open window

Here is what you can try

  • Write a function say init() inside mypage.html that do the html thing ( append or what ever)
  • instead of OpenWindow.document.write(output); call OpenWindow.init() when the dom is ready

So the parent window will have

    OpenWindow.onload = function(){
       OpenWindow.init('test');
    }

and in the child

    function init(txt){
        $('#test').text(txt);
    }

Filter rows which contain a certain string

The answer to the question was already posted by the @latemail in the comments above. You can use regular expressions for the second and subsequent arguments of filter like this:

dplyr::filter(df, !grepl("RTB",TrackingPixel))

Since you have not provided the original data, I will add a toy example using the mtcars data set. Imagine you are only interested in cars produced by Mazda or Toyota.

mtcars$type <- rownames(mtcars)
dplyr::filter(mtcars, grepl('Toyota|Mazda', type))

   mpg cyl disp hp drat wt qsec vs am gear carb type
1 21.0   6 160.0 110 3.90 2.620 16.46  0  1    4    4      Mazda RX4
2 21.0   6 160.0 110 3.90 2.875 17.02  0  1    4    4  Mazda RX4 Wag
3 33.9   4  71.1  65 4.22 1.835 19.90  1  1    4    1 Toyota Corolla
4 21.5   4 120.1  97 3.70 2.465 20.01  1  0    3    1  Toyota Corona

If you would like to do it the other way round, namely excluding Toyota and Mazda cars, the filter command looks like this:

dplyr::filter(mtcars, !grepl('Toyota|Mazda', type))

How to check if a textbox is empty using javascript

Using this JavaScript will help you a lot. Some explanations are given within the code.

<script type="text/javascript">
    <!--
        function Blank_TextField_Validator()
        {
        // Check whether the value of the element
        // text_name from the form named text_form is null
        if (!text_form.text_name.value)
        {
          // If it is display and alert box
           alert("Please fill in the text field.");
          // Place the cursor on the field for revision
           text_form.text_name.focus();
          // return false to stop further processing
           return (false);
        }
        // If text_name is not null continue processing
        return (true);
        }
        -->
</script>
<form name="text_form" method="get" action="#"
    onsubmit="return Blank_TextField_Validator()">
    <input type="text" name="text_name" >
    <input type="submit" value="Submit">

Convert Pandas Column to DateTime

How to create a custom attribute in C#

While the code to create a custom Attribute is fairly simple, it's very important that you understand what attributes are:

Attributes are metadata compiled into your program. Attributes themselves do not add any functionality to a class, property or module - just data. However, using reflection, one can leverage those attributes in order to create functionality.

So, for instance, let's look at the Validation Application Block, from Microsoft's Enterprise Library. If you look at a code example, you'll see:

    /// <summary>
    /// blah blah code.
    /// </summary>
    [DataMember]
    [StringLengthValidator(8, RangeBoundaryType.Inclusive, 8, RangeBoundaryType.Inclusive, MessageTemplate = "\"{1}\" must always have \"{4}\" characters.")]
    public string Code { get; set; }

From the snippet above, one might guess that the code will always be validated, whenever changed, accordingly to the rules of the Validator (in the example, have at least 8 characters and at most 8 characters). But the truth is that the Attribute does nothing; as mentioned previously, it only adds metadata to the property.

However, the Enterprise Library has a Validation.Validate method that will look into your object, and for each property, it'll check if the contents violate the rule informed by the attribute.

So, that's how you should think about attributes -- a way to add data to your code that might be later used by other methods/classes/etc.

How do I split a string in Rust?

There is a special method split for struct String:

fn split<'a, P>(&'a self, pat: P) -> Split<'a, P> where P: Pattern<'a>

Split by char:

let v: Vec<&str> = "Mary had a little lamb".split(' ').collect();
assert_eq!(v, ["Mary", "had", "a", "little", "lamb"]);

Split by string:

let v: Vec<&str> = "lion::tiger::leopard".split("::").collect();
assert_eq!(v, ["lion", "tiger", "leopard"]);

Split by closure:

let v: Vec<&str> = "abc1def2ghi".split(|c: char| c.is_numeric()).collect();
assert_eq!(v, ["abc", "def", "ghi"]);

Page redirect with successful Ajax request

In your mail3.php file you should trap errors in a try {} catch {}

try {
    /*code here for email*/
} catch (Exception $e) {
    header('HTTP/1.1 500 Internal Server Error');
}

Then in your success call you wont have to worry about your errors, because it will never return as a success.

and you can use: window.location.href = "thankyou.php"; inside your success function like Nick stated.

CodeIgniter 500 Internal Server Error

Just in case somebody else stumbles across this problem, I inherited an older CodeIgniter project and had a lot of trouble getting it to install.

I wasted a ton of time trying to create a local installation of the site and tried everything. In the end, the solution was simple.

The problem is that older CodeIgniter versions (like 1.7 and below), don't work with PHP 5.3. The solution is to switch to PHP 5.2 or something older.

How to send email to multiple recipients with addresses stored in Excel?

Both answers are correct. If you user .TO -method then the semicolumn is OK - but not for the addrecipients-method. There you need to split, e.g. :

                Dim Splitter() As String
                Splitter = Split(AddrMail, ";")
                For Each Dest In Splitter
                    .Recipients.Add (Trim(Dest))
                Next

MySQL Removing Some Foreign keys

Hey I followed some sequence above, and found some solution.

SHOW CREATE TABLE footable;

You will get FK Constrain Name like

Now you need to remove this constraints. by alter table commantd

alter table ProjectsInfo drop foreign key ProjectsInfo_ibfk_1;

Then drop the table column,

alter table ProjectsInfo drop column clientId;

Best way to incorporate Volley (or other library) into Android Studio project

Nowadays

dependencies {
    compile 'com.android.volley:volley:1.0.0'
}

A lot of different ways to do it back in the day (original answer)

  • Use the source files from git (a rather manual/general way described here)

    1. Download / install the git client (if you don't have it on your system yet): http://git-scm.com/downloads (or via git clone https://github.com/git/git ... sry bad one, but couldn't resist ^^)
    2. Execute git clone https://android.googlesource.com/platform/frameworks/volley
    3. Copy the com folder from within [path_where_you_typed_git_clone]/volley/src to your projects app/src/main/java folder (Integrate it instead, if you already have a com folder there!! ;-))

    The files show up immediately in Android Studio. For Eclipse you will have to right-click on the src folder and press refresh (or F5) first.

  • Use gradle via the "unofficial" maven mirror

    1. In your project's src/build.gradle file add following volley dependency:

      dependencies {
          compile fileTree(dir: 'libs', include: ['*.jar'])
          // ...

          compile 'com.mcxiaoke.volley:library:1.+'
      }

    2. Click on Try Again which should right away appear on the top of the file, or just Build it if not

    The main "advantage" here is, that this will keep the version up to date for you, whereas in the other two cases you would have to manually update volley.

    On the "downside" it is not officially from google, but a third party weekly mirror.

    But both of these points, are really relative to what you would need/want. Also if you don't want updates, just put the desired version there instead e.g. compile 'com.mcxiaoke.volley:library:1.0.7'.

Can I add color to bootstrap icons only using CSS?

Use the mask-image property, but it's a bit of a hack. It's demonstrated in the Safari blog here.

It's also described in-depth here.

Basically you'd create a CSS box, with say a background-image: gradient(foo); and then apply an image mask to it based on those PNG images.

It would save you development time making individual images in Photoshop, but I don't think it would save much bandwidth unless you'll be displaying the images in a wide variety of colours. Personally I wouldn't use it because you need to adjust your markup to use the technique effectively, but I'm a member of the "purity is imperitive" school-of-thought.

How can I join elements of an array in Bash?

$ foo=(a "b c" d)
$ bar=$(IFS=, ; echo "${foo[*]}")
$ echo "$bar"

comparing two strings in SQL Server

There is no direct string compare function in SQL Server

CASE
  WHEN str1 = str2 THEN 0
  WHEN str1 < str2 THEN -1
  WHEN str1 > str2 THEN 1
  ELSE NULL --one of the strings is NULL so won't compare (added on edit)
END

Notes

  • you can wraps this via a UDF using CREATE FUNCTION etc
  • you may need NULL handling (in my code above, any NULL will report 1)
  • str1 and str2 will be column names or @variables

Joining three tables using MySQL

Use ANSI syntax and it will be a lot more clear how you are joining the tables:

SELECT s.name as Student, c.name as Course
FROM student s
    INNER JOIN bridge b ON s.id = b.sid
    INNER JOIN course c ON b.cid  = c.id
ORDER BY s.name

Clearing input in vuejs form

What you need is to set this.text to an empty string in your submitForm function:

submitForm(e){
    this.todos.push(
        {
            text: this.text,
            completed: false
        }
    );
    this.text = "";

    // To prevent the form from submitting
    e.preventDefault();
}

Remember that binding works both ways: The (input) view can update the (string) model, or the model can update the view.

How do I iterate and modify Java Sets?

I don't like very much iterator's semantic, please consider this as an option. It's also safer as you publish less of your internal state

Is there Unicode glyph Symbol to represent "Search"

Use the ? symbol (encoded as &#9906; or &#x26B2;), and rotate it to achieve the desired effect:

<div style="-webkit-transform: rotate(45deg);
               -moz-transform: rotate(45deg);
                 -o-transform: rotate(45deg);
                    transform: rotate(45deg);">
    &#9906;
</div>

It rotates a symbol :)

Why number 9 in kill -9 command in unix?

There’s a very long list of Unix signals, which you can view on Wikipedia. Somewhat confusingly, you can actually use kill to send any signal to a process. For instance, kill -SIGSTOP 12345 forces process 12345 to pause its execution, while kill -SIGCONT 12345 tells it to resume. A slightly less cryptic version of kill -9 is kill -SIGKILL.

Are there any standard exit status codes in Linux?

Part 1: Advanced Bash Scripting Guide

As always, the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide has great information: (This was linked in another answer, but to a non-canonical URL.)

1: Catchall for general errors
2: Misuse of shell builtins (according to Bash documentation)
126: Command invoked cannot execute
127: "command not found"
128: Invalid argument to exit
128+n: Fatal error signal "n"
255: Exit status out of range (exit takes only integer args in the range 0 - 255)

Part 2: sysexits.h

The ABSG references sysexits.h.

On Linux:

$ find /usr -name sysexits.h
/usr/include/sysexits.h
$ cat /usr/include/sysexits.h

scale fit mobile web content using viewport meta tag

ok, here is my final solution with 100% native javascript:

<meta id="viewport" name="viewport">

<script type="text/javascript">
//mobile viewport hack
(function(){

  function apply_viewport(){
    if( /Android|webOS|iPhone|iPad|iPod|BlackBerry/i.test(navigator.userAgent)   ) {

      var ww = window.screen.width;
      var mw = 800; // min width of site
      var ratio = ww / mw; //calculate ratio
      var viewport_meta_tag = document.getElementById('viewport');
      if( ww < mw){ //smaller than minimum size
        viewport_meta_tag.setAttribute('content', 'initial-scale=' + ratio + ', maximum-scale=' + ratio + ', minimum-scale=' + ratio + ', user-scalable=no, width=' + mw);
      }
      else { //regular size
        viewport_meta_tag.setAttribute('content', 'initial-scale=1.0, maximum-scale=1, minimum-scale=1.0, user-scalable=yes, width=' + ww);
      }
    }
  }

  //ok, i need to update viewport scale if screen dimentions changed
  window.addEventListener('resize', function(){
    apply_viewport();
  });

  apply_viewport();

}());
</script>

How to read and write INI file with Python3?

Use nested dictionaries. Take a look:

INI File: example.ini

[Section]
Key = Value

Code:

class IniOpen:
    def __init__(self, file):
        self.parse = {}
        self.file = file
        self.open = open(file, "r")
        self.f_read = self.open.read()
        split_content = self.f_read.split("\n")

        section = ""
        pairs = ""

        for i in range(len(split_content)):
            if split_content[i].find("[") != -1:
                section = split_content[i]
                section = string_between(section, "[", "]")  # define your own function
                self.parse.update({section: {}})
            elif split_content[i].find("[") == -1 and split_content[i].find("="):
                pairs = split_content[i]
                split_pairs = pairs.split("=")
                key = split_pairs[0].trim()
                value = split_pairs[1].trim()
                self.parse[section].update({key: value})

    def read(self, section, key):
        try:
            return self.parse[section][key]
        except KeyError:
            return "Sepcified Key Not Found!"

    def write(self, section, key, value):
        if self.parse.get(section) is  None:
            self.parse.update({section: {}})
        elif self.parse.get(section) is not None:
            if self.parse[section].get(key) is None:
                self.parse[section].update({key: value})
            elif self.parse[section].get(key) is not None:
                return "Content Already Exists"

Apply code like so:

ini_file = IniOpen("example.ini")
print(ini_file.parse) # prints the entire nested dictionary
print(ini_file.read("Section", "Key") # >> Returns Value
ini_file.write("NewSection", "NewKey", "New Value"

How to loop through a JSON object with typescript (Angular2)

ECMAScript 6 introduced the let statement. You can use it in a for statement.

var ids:string = [];

for(let result of this.results){
   ids.push(result.Id);
}

Password must have at least one non-alpha character

An expression like this:

[a-zA-Z]*[0-9\+\*][a-zA-Z0-9\+\*]*

should work just fine (obviously insert any additional special characters you want to allow or use ^ operator to match anything except letters/numbers); no need to use complicated lookarounds. This approach makes sense if you only want to allow a certain subset of special characters that you know are "safe", and disallow all others.

If you want to include all special characters except certain ones which you know are "unsafe", then it makes sense to use something like:

\w[^\\]*[^a-zA-Z\\][^\\]*

In this case, you are explicitly disallowing backslashes in your password and allowing any combination with at least one non-alphabetic character otherwise.

The expression above will match any string containing letters and at least one number or +,*. As for the "length of 8" requirement, theres really no reason to check that using regex.

Append an array to another array in JavaScript

If you want to modify the original array instead of returning a new array, use .push()...

array1.push.apply(array1, array2);
array1.push.apply(array1, array3);

I used .apply to push the individual members of arrays 2 and 3 at once.

or...

array1.push.apply(array1, array2.concat(array3));

To deal with large arrays, you can do this in batches.

for (var n = 0, to_add = array2.concat(array3); n < to_add.length; n+=300) {
    array1.push.apply(array1, to_add.slice(n, n+300));
}

If you do this a lot, create a method or function to handle it.

var push_apply = Function.apply.bind([].push);
var slice_call = Function.call.bind([].slice);

Object.defineProperty(Array.prototype, "pushArrayMembers", {
    value: function() {
        for (var i = 0; i < arguments.length; i++) {
            var to_add = arguments[i];
            for (var n = 0; n < to_add.length; n+=300) {
                push_apply(this, slice_call(to_add, n, n+300));
            }
        }
    }
});

and use it like this:

array1.pushArrayMembers(array2, array3);

ORDER BY using Criteria API

It's hard to know for sure without seeing the mappings (see @Juha's comment), but I think you want something like the following:

Criteria c = session.createCriteria(Cat.class);
Criteria c2 = c.createCriteria("mother");
Criteria c3 = c2.createCriteria("kind");
c3.addOrder(Order.asc("value"));
return c.list();

library not found for -lPods

I tried EVERY answer in this thread to no avail. Finally resolved my issue by matching the "Pre-Configuration Build Products Path" in my target project with the value in the Pods project. Turns out they were building to two different output locations. None of the other suggestions in this thread were relevant for me. Would be great if XCode gave a useful error description (like WHY it can't use the lib - File Not Found, No matching architecture found, etc.).

JavaScript: filter() for Objects

ES6 approach...

Imagine you have this object below:

const developers = {
  1: {
   id: 1,
   name: "Brendan",
   family: "Eich"
  },
  2: {
   id: 2,
   name: "John",
   family: "Resig"
  },
  3: {
   id: 3,
   name: "Alireza",
   family: "Dezfoolian"
 }
};

Create a function:

const filterObject = (obj, filter, filterValue) =>
   Object.keys(obj).reduce((acc, val) =>
   (obj[val][filter] === filterValue ? acc : {
       ...acc,
       [val]: obj[val]
   }
), {});

And call it:

filterObject(developers, "name", "Alireza");

and will return:

{
  1: {
  id: 1,
  name: "Brendan",
  family: "Eich"
  },
  2: {
   id: 2,
   name: "John",
   family: "Resig"
  }
}

How can I print to the same line?

First, I'd like to apologize for bringing this question back up, but I felt that it could use another answer.

Derek Schultz is kind of correct. The '\b' character moves the printing cursor one character backwards, allowing you to overwrite the character that was printed there (it does not delete the entire line or even the character that was there unless you print new information on top). The following is an example of a progress bar using Java though it does not follow your format, it shows how to solve the core problem of overwriting characters (this has only been tested in Ubuntu 12.04 with Oracle's Java 7 on a 32-bit machine, but it should work on all Java systems):

public class BackSpaceCharacterTest
{
    // the exception comes from the use of accessing the main thread
    public static void main(String[] args) throws InterruptedException
    {
        /*
            Notice the user of print as opposed to println:
            the '\b' char cannot go over the new line char.
        */
        System.out.print("Start[          ]");
        System.out.flush(); // the flush method prints it to the screen

        // 11 '\b' chars: 1 for the ']', the rest are for the spaces
        System.out.print("\b\b\b\b\b\b\b\b\b\b\b");
        System.out.flush();
        Thread.sleep(500); // just to make it easy to see the changes

        for(int i = 0; i < 10; i++)
        {
            System.out.print("."); //overwrites a space
            System.out.flush();
            Thread.sleep(100);
        }

        System.out.print("] Done\n"); //overwrites the ']' + adds chars
        System.out.flush();
    }
}

Uninstall Eclipse under OSX?

Eclipse has no impact on Mac OS beyond it directory, so there is no problem uninstalling.

I think that What you are facing is the result of Eclipse switching the plugin distribution system recently. There are now two redundant and not very compatible means of installing plugins. It's a complete mess. You may be better off (if possible) installing a more recent version of Eclipse (maybe even the 3.5 milestones) as they seem to be more stable in that regard.

UICollectionView spacing margins

Using collectionViewFlowLayout.sectionInset or collectionView:layout:insetForSectionAtIndex: are correct.

However, if your collectionView has multiple sections and you want to add margin to the whole collectionView, I recommend to use the scrollView contentInset :

UIEdgeInsets collectionViewInsets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(50.0, 0.0, 30.0, 0.0);
self.collectionView.contentInset = collectionViewInsets;
self.collectionView.scrollIndicatorInsets = UIEdgeInsetsMake(collectionViewInsets.top, 0, collectionViewInsets.bottom, 0);

Just get column names from hive table

use desc tablename from Hive CLI or beeline to get all the column names. If you want the column names in a file then run the below command from the shell.

$ hive -e 'desc dbname.tablename;' > ~/columnnames.txt

where dbname is the name of the Hive database where your table is residing You can find the file columnnames.txt in your root directory.

$cd ~

Getting Excel to refresh data on sheet from within VBA

The following lines will do the trick:

ActiveSheet.EnableCalculation = False
ActiveSheet.EnableCalculation = True

Edit: The .Calculate() method will not work for all functions. I tested it on a sheet with add-in array functions. The production sheet I'm using is complex enough that I don't want to test the .CalculateFull() method, but it may work.

Get Excel sheet name and use as variable in macro

in a Visual Basic Macro you would use

pName = ActiveWorkbook.Path ' the path of the currently active file
wbName = ActiveWorkbook.Name ' the file name of the currently active file
shtName = ActiveSheet.Name ' the name of the currently selected worksheet

The first sheet in a workbook can be referenced by

ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1)

so after deleting the [Report] tab you would use

ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets("Report").Delete
shtName = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1).Name

to "work on that sheet later on" you can create a range object like

Dim MySheet as Range
MySheet = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(shtName).[A1]

and continue working on MySheet(rowNum, colNum) etc. ...

shortcut creation of a range object without defining shtName:

Dim MySheet as Range
MySheet = ActiveWorkbook.Worksheets(1).[A1]

How to play videos in android from assets folder or raw folder?

Difference between dict.clear() and assigning {} in Python

If you have another variable also referring to the same dictionary, there is a big difference:

>>> d = {"stuff": "things"}
>>> d2 = d
>>> d = {}
>>> d2
{'stuff': 'things'}
>>> d = {"stuff": "things"}
>>> d2 = d
>>> d.clear()
>>> d2
{}

This is because assigning d = {} creates a new, empty dictionary and assigns it to the d variable. This leaves d2 pointing at the old dictionary with items still in it. However, d.clear() clears the same dictionary that d and d2 both point at.

Refresh page after form submitting

LOL, I'm just wondering why no one had idea about the PHP header function:

header("Refresh: 0"); // here 0 is in seconds

I use this, so user is not prompt to resubmit data if he refresh the page.

Plotting dates on the x-axis with Python's matplotlib

You can do this more simply using plot() instead of plot_date().

First, convert your strings to instances of Python datetime.date:

import datetime as dt

dates = ['01/02/1991','01/03/1991','01/04/1991']
x = [dt.datetime.strptime(d,'%m/%d/%Y').date() for d in dates]
y = range(len(x)) # many thanks to Kyss Tao for setting me straight here

Then plot:

import matplotlib.pyplot as plt
import matplotlib.dates as mdates

plt.gca().xaxis.set_major_formatter(mdates.DateFormatter('%m/%d/%Y'))
plt.gca().xaxis.set_major_locator(mdates.DayLocator())
plt.plot(x,y)
plt.gcf().autofmt_xdate()

Android Fastboot devices not returning device

I had the same issue, but I was running Ubuntu 12.04 through a VM. I am using a Nexus 10. I had added the usb device as a filter for the VM (using virtual box in the virtual machine's settings).

The device I had added was "samsung Nexus 10".

The problem is that once the device is in fastboot mode, it shows up as a different device: "Google, Inc Android 1.0." So doing "lsusb" in the VM showed no device connected, and obviously "fastboot devices" returned nothing until I added the "second" device as a filter for the VM as well.

Hope this helps someone.

Safe width in pixels for printing web pages?

As for a true “universal answer”, I can’t provide one. I can, however, provide a simple and definitive answer for some particulars...

670 PIXELS

At least this seems to be a safe answer for Microsoft products. I read many suggestions, including 675, but after testing this myself 670 is what I came up with up.

All the DPI, margin issues, hardware differences aside, this answer is based on the fact that if I use print preview in IE9 (with standard margins) – and SET THE PRINT SIZE TO 100% rather than the default of “shrink to fit”, everything fits on the page without getting cut off at this width.

If I send an HTML email to myself and receive it with Windows Live Mail 2011 (what Outlook Express became) and I print the page at 670 width – again everything fits. This holds true if I send it to an actual hard copy or a an MS XPS file (virtual printout).

Before I experimented, I was using a arbitrary width of 700. In all the scenarios mentioned above part of the page was getting cut off. When I reduced to 670, everything fit perfectly.

As for how I set the width – I just used a primitive “wrapper” html table and defined it’s width to be 670.

If you can dictate the end user’s software, such matters can be straight forward. If you cannot (as is usually the case of course) you can test for particulars like which browsers they are using, etc. and hardcode the solutions for the important ones. Between IE and FF, you will cover literally about 90% of web users. Put in some other code for “everyone else” which generally seems to work and call it a day...

Warning, you want 'none' (the string). None means the default color instead.

Overriding a JavaScript function while referencing the original

So my answer ended up being a solution that allows me to use the _this variable pointing to the original object. I create a new instance of a "Square" however I hated the way the "Square" generated it's size. I thought it should follow my specific needs. However in order to do so I needed the square to have an updated "GetSize" function with the internals of that function calling other functions already existing in the square such as this.height, this.GetVolume(). But in order to do so I needed to do this without any crazy hacks. So here is my solution.

Some other Object initializer or helper function.

this.viewer = new Autodesk.Viewing.Private.GuiViewer3D(
  this.viewerContainer)
var viewer = this.viewer;
viewer.updateToolbarButtons =  this.updateToolbarButtons(viewer);

Function in the other object.

updateToolbarButtons = function(viewer) {
  var _viewer = viewer;
  return function(width, height){
blah blah black sheep I can refer to this.anything();
}
};

Function not defined javascript

I just went through the same problem. And found out once you have a syntax or any type of error in you javascript, the whole file don't get loaded so you cannot use any of the other functions at all.

How to create file object from URL object (image)

You can make use of ImageIO in order to load the image from an URL and then write it to a file. Something like this:

URL url = new URL("http://google.com/pathtoaimage.jpg");
BufferedImage img = ImageIO.read(url);
File file = new File("downloaded.jpg");
ImageIO.write(img, "jpg", file);

This also allows you to convert the image to some other format if needed.

What does this mean? "Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM"

T_PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM is the double colon scope resolution thingy PHP uses - ::

Quick glance at your code, I think this line:

return $cnf::getConfig($key);

should be

return $cnf->getConfig($key);

The first is the way to call a method statically - this code would be valid if $cnf contained a string that was also a valid class. The -> syntax is for calling a method on an instance of a class/object.

Maximum and minimum values in a textbox

If you're not using HTML5 this is a pretty basic JavaScript form validation.

Side note - I'd change the value to 0 on the blur event instead of keyup (as a user I think changing the text as I'm typing would be annoying to no end).

Java - Reading XML file

If using another library is an option, the following may be easier:

package for_so;

import java.io.File;

import rasmus_torkel.xml_basic.read.TagNode;
import rasmus_torkel.xml_basic.read.XmlReadOptions;
import rasmus_torkel.xml_basic.read.impl.XmlReader;

public class Q7704827_SimpleRead
{
    public static void
    main(String[] args)
    {
        String fileName = args[0];

        TagNode emailNode = XmlReader.xmlFileToRoot(new File(fileName), "EmailSettings", XmlReadOptions.DEFAULT);
        String recipient = emailNode.nextTextFieldE("recipient");
        String sender = emailNode.nextTextFieldE("sender");
        String subject = emailNode.nextTextFieldE("subject");
        String description = emailNode.nextTextFieldE("description");
        emailNode.verifyNoMoreChildren();

        System.out.println("recipient =  " + recipient);
        System.out.println("sender =     " + sender);
        System.out.println("subject =    " + subject);
        System.out.println("desciption = " + description);
    }
}

The library and its documentation are at rasmustorkel.com

How do you clear the console screen in C?

In Windows I have made the mistake of using

AWK: Access captured group from line pattern

That was a stroll down memory lane...

I replaced awk by perl a long time ago.

Apparently the AWK regular expression engine does not capture its groups.

you might consider using something like :

perl -n -e'/test(\d+)/ && print $1'

the -n flag causes perl to loop over every line like awk does.

Default argument values in JavaScript functions

ES2015 onwards:

From ES6/ES2015, we have default parameters in the language specification. So we can just do something simple like,

function A(a, b = 4, c = 5) {
}

or combined with ES2015 destructuring,

function B({c} = {c: 2}, [d, e] = [3, 4]) {
}

For detailed explanation,

https://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Web/JavaScript/Reference/Functions/default_parameters

Default function parameters allow formal parameters to be initialized with default values if no value or undefined is passed.

Pre ES2015:

If you're going to handle values which are NOT Numbers, Strings, Boolean, NaN, or null you can simply use

(So, for Objects, Arrays and Functions that you plan never to send null, you can use)

param || DEFAULT_VALUE

for example,

function X(a) {
  a = a || function() {};
}

Though this looks simple and kinda works, this is restrictive and can be an anti-pattern because || operates on all falsy values ("", null, NaN, false, 0) too - which makes this method impossible to assign a param the falsy value passed as the argument.

So, in order to handle only undefined values explicitly, the preferred approach would be,

function C(a, b) {
  a = typeof a === 'undefined' ? DEFAULT_VALUE_A : a;
  b = typeof b === 'undefined' ? DEFAULT_VALUE_B : b;
}

Calculate time difference in Windows batch file

@echo off

rem Get start time:

   set /A "start=(((%%a*60)+1%%b %% 100)*60+1%%c %% 100)*100+1%%d %% 100"
)

rem Any process here...

rem Get end time:
for /F "tokens=1-4 delims=:.," %%a in ("%time%") do (
   set /A "end=(((%%a*60)+1%%b %% 100)*60+1%%c %% 100)*100+1%%d %% 100"
)

rem Get elapsed time:
set /A elapsed=end-start

rem Show elapsed time:
set /A hh=elapsed/(60*60*100), rest=elapsed%%(60*60*100), mm=rest/(60*100), rest%%=60*100, ss=rest/100, cc=rest%%100
if %mm% lss 10 set mm=0%mm%
if %ss% lss 10 set ss=0%ss%
if %cc% lss 10 set cc=0%cc%
echo %hh%:%mm%:%ss%,%cc%

EDIT 2017-05-09: Shorter method added

I developed a shorter method to get the same result, so I couldn't resist to post it here. The two for commands used to separate time parts and the three if commands used to insert leading zeros in the result are replaced by two long arithmetic expressions, that could even be combined into a single longer line.

The method consists in directly convert a variable with a time in "HH:MM:SS.CC" format into the formula needed to convert the time to centiseconds, accordingly to the mapping scheme given below:

       HH        :      MM        :      SS        .       CC

(((10  HH  %%100)*60+1  MM  %%100)*60+1  SS  %%100)*100+1  CC  %%100

That is, insert (((10 at beginning, replace the colons by %%100)*60+1, replace the point by %%100)*100+1 and insert %%100 at end; finally, evaluate the resulting string as an arithmetic expression. In the time variable there are two different substrings that needs to be replaced, so the conversion must be completed in two lines. To get an elapsed time, use (endTime)-(startTime) expression and replace both time strings in the same line.

EDIT 2017/06/14: Locale independent adjustment added

EDIT 2020/06/05: Pass-over-midnight adjustment added

@echo off
setlocal EnableDelayedExpansion

set "startTime=%time: =0%"

set /P "=Any process here..."

set "endTime=%time: =0%"

rem Get elapsed time:
set "end=!endTime:%time:~8,1%=%%100)*100+1!"  &  set "start=!startTime:%time:~8,1%=%%100)*100+1!"
set /A "elap=((((10!end:%time:~2,1%=%%100)*60+1!%%100)-((((10!start:%time:~2,1%=%%100)*60+1!%%100), elap-=(elap>>31)*24*60*60*100"

rem Convert elapsed time to HH:MM:SS:CC format:
set /A "cc=elap%%100+100,elap/=100,ss=elap%%60+100,elap/=60,mm=elap%%60+100,hh=elap/60+100"

echo Start:    %startTime%
echo End:      %endTime%
echo Elapsed:  %hh:~1%%time:~2,1%%mm:~1%%time:~2,1%%ss:~1%%time:~8,1%%cc:~1%

Accessing dictionary value by index in python

If you really just want a random value from the available key range, use random.choice on the dictionary's values (converted to list form, if Python 3).

>>> from random import choice
>>> d = {1: 'a', 2: 'b', 3: 'c'}
>>>> choice(list(d.values()))

Number prime test in JavaScript

A small suggestion here, why do you want to run the loop for whole n numbers?

If a number is prime it will have 2 factors (1 and number itself). If it's not a prime they will have 1, number itself and more, you need not run the loop till the number, may be you can consider running it till the square root of the number.

You can either do it by euler's prime logic. Check following snippet:

function isPrime(num) {
  var sqrtnum=Math.floor(Math.sqrt(num));
    var prime = num != 1;
    for(var i=2; i<sqrtnum+1; i++) { // sqrtnum+1
        if(num % i == 0) {
            prime = false;
            break;
        }
    }
    return prime;
}

Now the complexity is O(sqrt(n))

For more information Why do we check up to the square root of a prime number to determine if it is prime?

Hope it helps

T-SQL Subquery Max(Date) and Joins

All other answers must work, but using your same syntax (and understanding why the error)

Change size of text in text input tag?

To change the font size of the <input /> tag in HTML, use this:

<input style="font-size:20px" type="text" value="" />

It will create a text input box and the text inside the text box will be 20 pixels.

ORACLE: Updating multiple columns at once

It's perfectly possible to update multiple columns in the same statement, and in fact your code is doing it. So why does it seem that "INV_TOTAL is not updating, only the inv_discount"?

Because you're updating INV_TOTAL with INV_DISCOUNT, and the database is going to use the existing value of INV_DISCOUNT and not the one you change it to. So I'm afraid what you need to do is this:

UPDATE INVOICE
   SET INV_DISCOUNT = DISC1 * INV_SUBTOTAL
     , INV_TOTAL    = INV_SUBTOTAL - (DISC1 * INV_SUBTOTAL)
WHERE INV_ID = I_INV_ID;

Perhaps that seems a bit clunky to you. It is, but the problem lies in your data model. Storing derivable values in the table, rather than deriving when needed, rarely leads to elegant SQL.

What are good examples of genetic algorithms/genetic programming solutions?

First off, "Genetic Programming" by Jonathan Koza (on amazon) is pretty much THE book on genetic and evolutionary algorithm/programming techniques, with many examples. I highly suggest checking it out.

As for my own use of a genetic algorithm, I used a (home grown) genetic algorithm to evolve a swarm algorithm for an object collection/destruction scenario (practical purpose could have been clearing a minefield). Here is a link to the paper. The most interesting part of what I did was the multi-staged fitness function, which was a necessity since the simple fitness functions did not provide enough information for the genetic algorithm to sufficiently differentiate between members of the population.

UITextView that expands to text using auto layout

I see multiple answers suggest simply turning off scrollEnabled. This is the best solution. I’m writing this answer to explain why it works.

UITextView implements the intrinsicContentSize property if scrollEnabled == NO. The disassembly of the getter method looks like this:

- (CGSize)intrinsicContentSize {
  if (self.scrollEnabled) {
    return CGSizeMake(UIViewNoIntrinsicMetric, UIViewNoIntrinsicMetric);
  } else {
    // Calculate and return intrinsic content size based on current width.
  }
}

That means you just need to make sure the width of the text view is constrained enough and then you can use the intrinsic content height (either via Auto Layout content hugging/compression resistance priorities or directly using the value during manual layout).

Unfortunately, this behavior is not documented. Apple could have easily saved us all some headaches… no need for an extra height constraint, subclassing, etc.

How do I use spaces in the Command Prompt?

Spaces in the Commend Prompt (in a VBA Shell command code line)

I had a very similar problem which ended up being a space in the command prompt when automating via VBA to get the contents from the command window into a text file. This Thread was one of many I caught along the way that didn’t quite get me the solution.

So this may help others with a similar problem: Since the syntax with quotes is always difficult to get right , I think showing some specific examples is always useful. The additional problem you get using the command prompt in VBA via the Shell thing, is that the code line often won’t error when something goes wrong: in fact a blink of the black commend window misleads into thinking something was done.

As example… say I have a Folder, with a text file in it like at

C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt ( https://imgur.com/FELSdB6 )

The space there in the folder name gives the problem.

Something like this would work, assuming the Folder, AlansFolder, exists

Sub ShellBlackCommandPromptWindowAutomatingCopyingWindowContent()
 Shell "cmd.exe /c ""ipconfig /all > C:\AlansFolder\test1.txt"""
End Sub

This won’t work. (It won’t error).

Sub ShellBlackCommandPromptWindowAutomatingCopyingWindowContent()
 Shell "cmd.exe /c ""ipconfig /all > C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt"""
End Sub

Including quote pairs around the path will make it work

Sub ShellBlackCommandPromptWindowAutomatingCopyingWindowContent()
 Shell "cmd.exe /c ""ipconfig /all > ""C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt"""""
End Sub

( By the way, if the text file does not exist, then it will be made).

With the benefit of hindsight, we can see that my solution does tie up approximately with some already given..

Converting that code line to a manual given command we would have

ipconfig /all > "C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt"

That seems to work

This works also

ipconfig /all > C:\AlansFolder\test1.txt

This doesn’t

ipconfig /all > C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt

This final form also works and ties up with the solution from sacra ….” You have to add quotation marks around each path and also enclose the whole command in quotation marks “ …..

cmd.exe /c "ipconfig /all > "C:\Alans Folder\test1.txt""

How do I check if a Key is pressed on C++

There is no portable function that allows to check if a key is hit and continue if not. This is always system dependent.

Solution for linux and other posix compliant systems:

Here, for Morgan Mattews's code provide kbhit() functionality in a way compatible with any POSIX compliant system. He uses the trick of desactivating buffering at termios level.

Solution for windows:

For windows, Microsoft offers _kbhit()

XSL if: test with multiple test conditions

Try to use the empty() function:

<xsl:if test="empty(node/ABC/node()) and empty(node/DEF/node())">
    <xsl:text>This should work</xsl:text>
</xsl:if>

This identifies ABC and DEF as empty in the sense that they do not have any child nodes (no elements, no text nodes, no processing instructions, no comments).

But, as pointed out by @Ian, your elements might not be empty really or that might not be your actual problem - you did not show what your input XML looks like.

Another cause of error could be your relative position in the tree. This way of testing conditions only works if the surrounding template matches the parent element of node or if you iterate over the parent element of node.

Change private static final field using Java reflection

Even in spite of being final a field can be modified outside of static initializer and (at least JVM HotSpot) will execute the bytecode perfectly fine.

The problem is that Java compiler does not allow this, but this can be easily bypassed using objectweb.asm. Here is p?e?r?f?e?c?t?l?y? ?v?a?l?i?d? ?c?l?a?s?s?f?i?l?e? an invalid classfile from the JVMS specification standpoint, but it passes bytecode verification and then is successfully loaded and initialized under JVM HotSpot OpenJDK12:

ClassWriter cw = new ClassWriter(0);
cw.visit(Opcodes.V1_8, Opcodes.ACC_PUBLIC, "Cl", null, "java/lang/Object", null);
{
    FieldVisitor fv = cw.visitField(Opcodes.ACC_PRIVATE | Opcodes.ACC_STATIC | Opcodes.ACC_FINAL, "fld", "I", null, null);
    fv.visitEnd();
}
{
    // public void setFinalField1() { //... }
    MethodVisitor mv = cw.visitMethod(Opcodes.ACC_PUBLIC | Opcodes.ACC_STATIC, "setFinalField1", "()V", null, null);
    mv.visitMaxs(2, 1);
    mv.visitInsn(Opcodes.ICONST_5);
    mv.visitFieldInsn(Opcodes.PUTSTATIC, "Cl", "fld", "I");
    mv.visitInsn(Opcodes.RETURN);
    mv.visitEnd();
}
{
    // public void setFinalField2() { //... }
    MethodVisitor mv = cw.visitMethod(Opcodes.ACC_PUBLIC | Opcodes.ACC_STATIC, "setFinalField2", "()V", null, null);
    mv.visitMaxs(2, 1);
    mv.visitInsn(Opcodes.ICONST_2);
    mv.visitFieldInsn(Opcodes.PUTSTATIC, "Cl", "fld", "I");
    mv.visitInsn(Opcodes.RETURN);
    mv.visitEnd();
}
cw.visitEnd();

In Java, the class looks roughly speaking as follows:

public class Cl{
    private static final int fld;

    public static void setFinalField1(){
        fld = 5;
    }

    public static void setFinalField2(){
        fld = 2;
    }
}

which cannot be compiled with javac, but can be loaded and executed by JVM.

JVM HotSpot has special treatment of such classes in the sense that it prevents such "constants" from participating in constant folding. This check is done on the bytecode rewriting phase of class initialization:

// Check if any final field of the class given as parameter is modified
// outside of initializer methods of the class. Fields that are modified
// are marked with a flag. For marked fields, the compilers do not perform
// constant folding (as the field can be changed after initialization).
//
// The check is performed after verification and only if verification has
// succeeded. Therefore, the class is guaranteed to be well-formed.
InstanceKlass* klass = method->method_holder();
u2 bc_index = Bytes::get_Java_u2(bcp + prefix_length + 1);
constantPoolHandle cp(method->constants());
Symbol* ref_class_name = cp->klass_name_at(cp->klass_ref_index_at(bc_index));
if (klass->name() == ref_class_name) {
   Symbol* field_name = cp->name_ref_at(bc_index);
   Symbol* field_sig = cp->signature_ref_at(bc_index);

   fieldDescriptor fd;
   if (klass->find_field(field_name, field_sig, &fd) != NULL) {
      if (fd.access_flags().is_final()) {
         if (fd.access_flags().is_static()) {
            if (!method->is_static_initializer()) {
               fd.set_has_initialized_final_update(true);
            }
          } else {
            if (!method->is_object_initializer()) {
              fd.set_has_initialized_final_update(true);
            }
          }
        }
      }
    }
}

The only restriction that JVM HotSpot checks is that the final field should not be modified outside of the class that the final field is declared at.

Postgres: check if array field contains value?

Instead of IN we can use ANY with arrays casted to enum array, for example:

create type example_enum as enum (
  'ENUM1', 'ENUM2'
);

create table example_table (
  id integer,
  enum_field example_enum
);

select
  *
from
  example_table t
where
  t.enum_field = any(array['ENUM1', 'ENUM2']::example_enum[]);

Or we can still use 'IN' clause, but first, we should 'unnest' it:

select
  *
from
  example_table t
where
  t.enum_field in (select unnest(array['ENUM1', 'ENUM2']::example_enum[]));

                <li><a href="#">Action</a></li>

Reading string from input with space character?

The correct answer is this:

#include <stdio.h>

int main(void)
{
    char name[100];

    printf("Enter your name: ");
    // pay attention to the space in front of the %
    //that do all the trick
    scanf(" %[^\n]s", name);
    printf("Your Name is: %s", name);

    return 0;
}

That space in front of % is very important, because if you have in your program another few scanf let's say you have 1 scanf of an integer value and another scanf with a double value... when you reach the scanf for your char (string name) that command will be skipped and you can't enter value for it... but if you put that space in front of % will be ok everything and not skip nothing.

await vs Task.Wait - Deadlock?

Some important facts were not given in other answers:

"async await" is more complex at CIL level and thus costs memory and CPU time.

Any task can be canceled if the waiting time is unacceptable.

In the case "async await" we do not have a handler for such a task to cancel it or monitoring it.

Using Task is more flexible then "async await".

Any sync functionality can by wrapped by async.

public async Task<ActionResult> DoAsync(long id)
{
    return await Task.Run(() => { return DoSync(id); } );
}

"async await" generate many problems. We do not now is await statement will be reached without runtime and context debugging. If first await not reached everything is blocked. Some times even await seems to be reached still everything is blocked:

https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/issues/36063

I do not see why I'm must live with the code duplication for sync and async method or using hacks.

Conclusion: Create Task manually and control them is much better. Handler to Task give more control. We can monitor Tasks and manage them:

How do you manually execute SQL commands in Ruby On Rails using NuoDB

For me, I couldn't get this to return a hash.

How do I merge a git tag onto a branch

Remember before you merge you need to update the tag, it's quite different from branches (git pull origin tag_name won't update your local tags). Thus, you need the following command:

git fetch --tags origin

Then you can perform git merge tag_name to merge the tag onto a branch.

What is "with (nolock)" in SQL Server?

Not sure why you are not wrapping financial transactions in database transactions (as when you transfer funds from one account to another - you don't commit one side of the transaction at-a-time - this is why explicit transactions exist). Even if your code is braindead to business transactions as it sounds like it is, all transactional databases have the potential to do implicit rollbacks in the event of errors or failure. I think this discussion is way over your head.

If you are having locking problems, implement versioning and clean up your code.

No lock not only returns wrong values it returns phantom records and duplicates.

It is a common misconception that it always makes queries run faster. If there are no write locks on a table, it does not make any difference. If there are locks on the table, it may make the query faster, but there is a reason locks were invented in the first place.

In fairness, here are two special scenarios where a nolock hint may provide utility

1) Pre-2005 sql server database that needs to run long query against live OLTP database this may be the only way

2) Poorly written application that locks records and returns control to the UI and readers are indefinitely blocked. Nolock can be helpful here if application cannot be fixed (third party etc) and database is either pre-2005 or versioning cannot be turned on.

Html.ActionLink as a button or an image, not a link

if you don't want to use a link, use button. you can add image to button as well:

<button type="button" onclick="location.href='@Url.Action("Create", "Company")'" >
   Create New
   <img alt="New" title="New" src="~/Images/Button/plus.png">
</button>

type="button" performs your action instead of submitting form.

Calendar.getInstance(TimeZone.getTimeZone("UTC")) is not returning UTC time

How to recognize swipe in all 4 directions

After digging around for a while:

The shortest way to add swipes for all 4 directions is:

override func viewDidLoad() {
    super.viewDidLoad()
    for direction in [UISwipeGestureRecognizer.Direction.down, .up, .left, .right]{
        let swipeGest = UISwipeGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: #selector(swipeAction(_:)))
        swipeGest.direction = direction
        self.view.addGestureRecognizer(swipeGest)
    }
}

@objc func swipeAction(_ gesture: UISwipeGestureRecognizer){
    switch gesture.direction {
    case UISwipeGestureRecognizer.Direction.right:
        print("Swiped right")
    case UISwipeGestureRecognizer.Direction.down:
        print("Swiped down")
    case UISwipeGestureRecognizer.Direction.left:
        print("Swiped left")
    case UISwipeGestureRecognizer.Direction.up:
        print("Swiped up")
    default: break
}

"Could not find a valid gem in any repository" (rubygame and others)

How to do "If Clicked Else .."

You may actually mean hovering the element by not clicking, right?

jQuery('#id').click(function()
{
    // execute on click
}).hover(function()
{
    // execute on hover
});

Clarify your question then we'll be able to understand better.

Simply if an element isn't being clicked on, do a setInterval to continue the process until clicked.

var checkClick = setInterval(function()
{
    // do something when the element hasn't been clicked yet
}, 2000); // every 2 seconds

jQuery('#id').click(function()
{
    clearInterval(checkClick); // this is optional, but it will
                               // clear the interval once the element
                               // has been clicked on

    // do something else
})

Codeigniter's `where` and `or_where`

You can change your code to this:

$where_au = "(library.available_until >= '{date('Y-m-d H:i:s)}' OR library.available_until = '00-00-00 00:00:00')";
$this->db
    ->select('*')
    ->from('library')
    ->where('library.rating >=', $form['slider'])
    ->where('library.votes >=', '1000')
    ->where('library.language !=', 'German')
    ->where($where_au)
    ->where('library.release_year >=', $year_start)
    ->where('library.release_year <=', $year_end)
    ->join('rating_repo', 'library.id = rating_repo.id');

Tip: to watch the generated query you can use

echo $this->db->last_query(); die();

Updating MySQL primary key

If the primary key happens to be an auto_increment value, you have to remove the auto increment, then drop the primary key then re-add the auto-increment

ALTER TABLE `xx`
MODIFY `auto_increment_field` INT,
DROP PRIMARY KEY,
ADD PRIMARY KEY (new_primary_key);

then add back the auto increment

ALTER TABLE `xx` ADD INDEX `auto_increment_field` (auto_increment_field),
MODIFY `auto_increment_field` int auto_increment;

then set auto increment back to previous value

ALTER TABLE `xx` AUTO_INCREMENT = 5;

Git on Windows: How do you set up a mergetool?

It seems that newer git versions support p4merge directly, so

should be all you need, if p4merge.exe is on your path. No need to set up cmd or path.

C# int to enum conversion

Casting should be enough. If you're using C# 3.0 you can make a handy extension method to parse enum values:

public static TEnum ToEnum<TInput, TEnum>(this TInput value)
{
    Type type = typeof(TEnum);

    if (value == default(TInput))
    {
        throw new ArgumentException("Value is null or empty.", "value");
    }

    if (!type.IsEnum)
    {
        throw new ArgumentException("Enum expected.", "TEnum");
    }

    return (TEnum)Enum.Parse(type, value.ToString(), true);
}

Android Design Support Library expandable Floating Action Button(FAB) menu

In case anyone is still looking for this functionality: I made an Android library that has this ability and much more, called ExpandableFab (https://github.com/nambicompany/expandable-fab).

The Material Design spec refers to this functionality as 'Speed Dial' and ExpandableFab implements it along with many additional features.

Nearly everything is customizable (colors, text, size, placement, margins, animations and more) and optional (don't need an Overlay, or FabOptions, or Labels, or icons, etc). Every property can be accessed or set through XML layouts or programmatically - whatever you prefer.

Written 100% in Kotlin but comes with full JavaDoc and KDoc (published API is well documented). Also comes with an example app so you can see different use cases with 0 coding.

java.lang.IllegalStateException: Fragment not attached to Activity

I Found Very Simple Solution isAdded() method which is one of the fragment method to identify that this current fragment is attached to its Activity or not.

we can use this like everywhere in fragment class like:

if(isAdded())
{

// using this method, we can do whatever we want which will prevent **java.lang.IllegalStateException: Fragment not attached to Activity** exception.

}

The activity must be exported or contain an intent-filter

If you're trying to launch a specific activity instead of running the launcher one. When you select that activity. the android studio might through this error, Either you need to make it launcher activity, just like answered by few others. or you need to add android:exported="true" inside your activity tag inside manifest. It allows any external tool to run your specific activity directly without making it a launcher activity

C++ terminate called without an active exception

As long as your program die, then without detach or join of the thread, this error will occur. Without detaching and joining the thread, you should give endless loop after creating thread.

int main(){

std::thread t(thread,1);

while(1){}

//t.detach();
return 0;}

It is also interesting that, after sleeping or looping, thread can be detach or join. Also with this way you do not get this error.

Below example also shows that, third thread can not done his job before main die. But this error can not happen also, as long as you detach somewhere in the code. Third thread sleep for 8 seconds but main will die in 5 seconds.

void thread(int n) {std::this_thread::sleep_for (std::chrono::seconds(n));}

int main() {
std::cout << "Start main\n";
std::thread t(thread,1);
std::thread t2(thread,3);
std::thread t3(thread,8);
sleep(5);

t.detach();
t2.detach();
t3.detach();
return 0;}

List Highest Correlation Pairs from a Large Correlation Matrix in Pandas?

I liked Addison Klinke's post the most, as being the simplest, but used Wojciech Moszczynsk’s suggestion for filtering and charting, but extended the filter to avoid absolute values, so given a large correlation matrix, filter it, chart it, and then flatten it:

Created, Filtered and Charted

dfCorr = df.corr()
filteredDf = dfCorr[((dfCorr >= .5) | (dfCorr <= -.5)) & (dfCorr !=1.000)]
plt.figure(figsize=(30,10))
sn.heatmap(filteredDf, annot=True, cmap="Reds")
plt.show()

filtered heat map

Function

In the end, I created a small function to create the correlation matrix, filter it, and then flatten it. As an idea, it could easily be extended, e.g., asymmetric upper and lower bounds, etc.

def corrFilter(x: pd.DataFrame, bound: float):
    xCorr = x.corr()
    xFiltered = xCorr[((xCorr >= bound) | (xCorr <= -bound)) & (xCorr !=1.000)]
    xFlattened = xFiltered.unstack().sort_values().drop_duplicates()
    return xFlattened

corrFilter(df, .7)

How do I render a Word document (.doc, .docx) in the browser using JavaScript?

There seem to be some js libraries that can handle .docx (not .doc) to html conversion client-side (in no particular order):

Note: If you are looking for the best way to convert a doc/docx file on the client side, then probably the answer is don't do it. If you really need to do it then do it server-side, i.e. with libreoffice in headless mode, apache-poi (java), pandoc or whatever other library works best for you.

warning about too many open figures

The following snippet solved the issue for me:

class FigureWrapper(object):
    '''Frees underlying figure when it goes out of scope.
    '''

    def __init__(self, figure):
        self._figure = figure

    def __del__(self):
        plt.close(self._figure)
        print("Figure removed")

# .....
    f, ax = plt.subplots(1, figsize=(20, 20))
    _wrapped_figure = FigureWrapper(f)

    ax.plot(...
    plt.savefig(...
# .....

When _wrapped_figure goes out of scope the runtime calls our __del__() method with plt.close() inside. It happens even if exception fires after _wrapped_figure constructor.

Define global variable with webpack

I solved this issue by setting the global variables as a static properties on the classes to which they are most relevant. In ES5 it looks like this:

var Foo = function(){...};
Foo.globalVar = {};

Determine number of pages in a PDF file

You'll need a PDF API for C#. iTextSharp is one possible API, though better ones might exist.

iTextSharp Example

You must install iTextSharp.dll as a reference. Download iTextsharp from SourceForge.net This is a complete working program using a console application.

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using iTextSharp.text.pdf;
using iTextSharp.text.xml;
namespace GetPages_PDF
{
  class Program
{
    static void Main(string[] args)
      {
       // Right side of equation is location of YOUR pdf file
        string ppath = "C:\\aworking\\Hawkins.pdf";
        PdfReader pdfReader = new PdfReader(ppath);
        int numberOfPages = pdfReader.NumberOfPages;
        Console.WriteLine(numberOfPages);
        Console.ReadLine();
      }
   }
}

C++ Matrix Class

The library called, Matrix supports so many features including mathematics operations, dumping and logging features, associative containers, multiple dimensions and etc.

Usage

its usage is similar to c++ arrays.

Matrix<int> A(1, 2);
Matrix<int> B(2, 3);
Matrix<int> result(1, 3);

A[0][0] = 7;
A[0][1] = 10;

B[0][0] = 1;
B[0][1] = 4;
B[0][2] = 2;
B[1][0] = 1;
B[1][1] = 2;
B[1][2] = 100;

result = A * B;

result.dump.matrix();

Result:

Matrix view:
-            -
| 17 48 1014 |
-            -

How can I represent an 'Enum' in Python?

Didn't see this one in the list of answers, here is the one I whipped up. It allows the use of 'in' keyword and len() method:

class EnumTypeError(TypeError):
    pass

class Enum(object):
    """
    Minics enum type from different languages
    Usage:
    Letters = Enum(list('abc'))
    a = Letters.a
    print(a in Letters) # True
    print(54 in Letters) # False
    """
    def __init__(self, enums):
        if isinstance(enums, dict):
            self.__dict__.update(enums)
        elif isinstance(enums, list) or isinstance(enums, tuple):
            self.__dict__.update(**dict((v,k) for k,v in enumerate(enums)))
        else:
            raise EnumTypeError

    def __contains__(self, key):
        return key in self.__dict__.values()

    def __len__(self):
        return len(self.__dict__.values())

if __name__ == '__main__':
    print('Using a dictionary to create Enum:')
    Letters = Enum(dict((v,k) for k,v in enumerate(list('abcde'))))
    a = Letters.a
    print('\tIs a in e?', a in Letters)
    print('\tIs 54 in e?', 54 in Letters)
    print('\tLength of Letters enum:', len(Letters))

    print('\nUsing a list to create Enum:')
    Letters = Enum(list('abcde'))
    a = Letters.a
    print('\tIs a in e?', a in Letters)
    print('\tIs 54 in e?', 54 in Letters)
    print('\tLength of Letters enum:', len(Letters))

    try:
        # make sure we raise an exception if we pass an invalid arg
        Failure = Enum('This is a Failure')
        print('Failure')
    except EnumTypeError:
        print('Success!')

Jasmine.js comparing arrays

You can compare an array like the below mentioned if the array has some values

it('should check if the array are equal', function() {
        var mockArr = [1, 2, 3];
        expect(mockArr ).toEqual([1, 2, 3]);
 });

But if the array that is returned from some function has more than 1 elements and all are zero then verify by using

expect(mockArray[0]).toBe(0);

Save Dataframe to csv directly to s3 Python

I like s3fs which lets you use s3 (almost) like a local filesystem.

You can do this:

import s3fs

bytes_to_write = df.to_csv(None).encode()
fs = s3fs.S3FileSystem(key=key, secret=secret)
with fs.open('s3://bucket/path/to/file.csv', 'wb') as f:
    f.write(bytes_to_write)

s3fs supports only rb and wb modes of opening the file, that's why I did this bytes_to_write stuff.

jQuery equivalent of JavaScript's addEventListener method

Not all browsers support event capturing (for example, Internet Explorer versions less than 9 don't) but all do support event bubbling, which is why it is the phase used to bind handlers to events in all cross-browser abstractions, jQuery's included.

The nearest to what you are looking for in jQuery is using bind() (superseded by on() in jQuery 1.7+) or the event-specific jQuery methods (in this case, click(), which calls bind() internally anyway). All use the bubbling phase of a raised event.

Difference between objectForKey and valueForKey?

objectForKey: is an NSDictionary method. An NSDictionary is a collection class similar to an NSArray, except instead of using indexes, it uses keys to differentiate between items. A key is an arbitrary string you provide. No two objects can have the same key (just as no two objects in an NSArray can have the same index).

valueForKey: is a KVC method. It works with ANY class. valueForKey: allows you to access a property using a string for its name. So for instance, if I have an Account class with a property accountNumber, I can do the following:

NSNumber *anAccountNumber = [NSNumber numberWithInt:12345];
Account *newAccount = [[Account alloc] init];

[newAccount setAccountNumber:anAccountNUmber];

NSNumber *anotherAccountNumber = [newAccount accountNumber];

Using KVC, I can access the property dynamically:

NSNumber *anAccountNumber = [NSNumber numberWithInt:12345];
Account *newAccount = [[Account alloc] init];

[newAccount setValue:anAccountNumber forKey:@"accountNumber"];

NSNumber *anotherAccountNumber = [newAccount valueForKey:@"accountNumber"];

Those are equivalent sets of statements.

I know you're thinking: wow, but sarcastically. KVC doesn't look all that useful. In fact, it looks "wordy". But when you want to change things at runtime, you can do lots of cool things that are much more difficult in other languages (but this is beyond the scope of your question).

If you want to learn more about KVC, there are many tutorials if you Google especially at Scott Stevenson's blog. You can also check out the NSKeyValueCoding Protocol Reference.

Hope that helps.

"Line contains NULL byte" in CSV reader (Python)

I've solved a similar problem with an easier solution:

import codecs
csvReader = csv.reader(codecs.open('file.csv', 'rU', 'utf-16'))

The key was using the codecs module to open the file with the UTF-16 encoding, there are a lot more of encodings, check the documentation.

Add Foreign Key relationship between two Databases

If you need rock solid integrity, have both tables in one database, and use an FK constraint. If your parent table is in another database, nothing prevents anyone from restoring that parent database from an old backup, and then you have orphans.

This is why FK between databases is not supported.

The model item passed into the dictionary is of type .. but this dictionary requires a model item of type

The error means that you're navigating to a view whose model is declared as typeof Foo (by using @model Foo), but you actually passed it a model which is typeof Bar (note the term dictionary is used because a model is passed to the view via a ViewDataDictionary).

The error can be caused by

Passing the wrong model from a controller method to a view (or partial view)

Common examples include using a query that creates an anonymous object (or collection of anonymous objects) and passing it to the view

var model = db.Foos.Select(x => new
{
    ID = x.ID,
    Name = x.Name
};
return View(model); // passes an anonymous object to a view declared with @model Foo

or passing a collection of objects to a view that expect a single object

var model = db.Foos.Where(x => x.ID == id);
return View(model); // passes IEnumerable<Foo> to a view declared with @model Foo

The error can be easily identified at compile time by explicitly declaring the model type in the controller to match the model in the view rather than using var.

Passing the wrong model from a view to a partial view

Given the following model

public class Foo
{
    public Bar MyBar { get; set; }
}

and a main view declared with @model Foo and a partial view declared with @model Bar, then

Foo model = db.Foos.Where(x => x.ID == id).Include(x => x.Bar).FirstOrDefault();
return View(model);

will return the correct model to the main view. However the exception will be thrown if the view includes

@Html.Partial("_Bar") // or @{ Html.RenderPartial("_Bar"); }

By default, the model passed to the partial view is the model declared in the main view and you need to use

@Html.Partial("_Bar", Model.MyBar) // or @{ Html.RenderPartial("_Bar", Model.MyBar); }

to pass the instance of Bar to the partial view. Note also that if the value of MyBar is null (has not been initialized), then by default Foo will be passed to the partial, in which case, it needs to be

@Html.Partial("_Bar", new Bar())

Declaring a model in a layout

If a layout file includes a model declaration, then all views that use that layout must declare the same model, or a model that derives from that model.

If you want to include the html for a separate model in a Layout, then in the Layout, use @Html.Action(...) to call a [ChildActionOnly] method initializes that model and returns a partial view for it.

Basic CSS - how to overlay a DIV with semi-transparent DIV on top

Like the answer previous, but I'd put ::before, just for stacking purposes. If you want to include text over the overlay (a common use case), using ::before will should fix that.

.dimmed {
  position: relative;
}

.dimmed:before {
  content: " ";
  z-index: 10;
  display: block;
  position: absolute;
  height: 100%;
  top: 0;
  left: 0;
  right: 0;
  background: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.5);
}

git pull keeping local changes

To answer the question : if you want to exclude certain files of a checkout, you can use sparse-checkout

  1. In .git/info/sparse-checkout, define what you want to keep. Here, we want all (*) but (note the exclamation mark) config.php :

    /* !/config.php

  2. Tell git you want to take sparse-checkout into account

    git config core.sparseCheckout true

  3. If you already have got this file locally, do what git does on a sparse checkout (tell it it must exclude this file by setting the "skip-worktree" flag on it)

    git update-index --skip-worktree config.php

  4. Enjoy a repository where your config.php file is yours - whatever changes are on the repository.

Please note that configuration values SHOULDN'T be in source control :

  • It is a potential security breach
  • It causes problems like this one for deployment

This means you MUST exclude them (put them in .gitignore before first commit), and create the appropriate file on each instance where you checkout your app (by copying and adapting a "template" file)

Note that, once a file is taken in charge by git, .gitignore won't have any effect.

Given that, once the file is under source control, you only have two choices () :

  • rebase all your history to remove the file (with git filter-branch)

  • create a commit that removes the file. It is like fighting a loosing battle, but, well, sometimes you have to live with that.

iPhone Navigation Bar Title text color

I know this is a pretty old thread, but I think it would be useful to know for new users that iOS 5 brings a new property for establishing title properties.

You can use UINavigationBar's setTitleTextAttributes for setting the font, color, offset, and shadow color.

In addition you can set the same default UINavigationBar's Title Text Attributes for all the UINavigationBars throughout your application.

For example like so:

NSDictionary *navbarTitleTextAttributes = [NSDictionary dictionaryWithObjectsAndKeys:
                                            [UIColor whiteColor],UITextAttributeTextColor,
                                            [UIColor blackColor], UITextAttributeTextShadowColor,
                                            [NSValue valueWithUIOffset:UIOffsetMake(-1, 0)], UITextAttributeTextShadowOffset, nil];

[[UINavigationBar appearance] setTitleTextAttributes:navbarTitleTextAttributes];

How to remove ASP.Net MVC Default HTTP Headers?

For the sake of completeness, there is another way to remove the Server header, using regedit.

See this MSDN blog.

Create a DWORD entry called DisableServerHeader in the following Registry key and set the value to 1.

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters

I'd rather find a proper solution using the Web.config, but using <rewrite> is not good because it requires the rewrite module to be installed, and even then it won't really remove the header, just empty it.

Passing data into "router-outlet" child components

There are 3 ways to pass data from Parent to Children

  1. Through shareable service : you should store into a service the data you would like to share with the children
  2. Through Children Router Resolver if you have to receive different data

    this.data = this.route.snaphsot.data['dataFromResolver'];

  3. Through Parent Router Resolver if your have to receive the same data from parent

    this.data = this.route.parent.snaphsot.data['dataFromResolver'];

Note1: You can read about resolver here. There is also an example of resolver and how to register the resolver into the module and then retrieve data from resolver into the component. The resolver registration is the same on the parent and child.

Note2: You can read about ActivatedRoute here to be able to get data from router

What is the difference between HTTP and REST?

HTTP is a contract, a communication protocol and REST is a concept, an architectural style which may use HTTP, FTP or other communication protocols but is widely used with HTTP.

REST implies a series of constraints about how Server and Client should interact. HTTP is a communication protocol with a given mechanism for server-client data transfer, it's most commonly used in REST API just because REST was inspired by WWW (world wide web) which largely used HTTP before REST was defined, so it's easier to implement REST API style with HTTP.

There are three major constraints in REST (but there are more):

1. Interaction between server and client should be described via hypertext only.

2. Server and client should be loosely coupled and make no assumptions about each other. Client should only know resource entry point. Interaction data should be provided by the server in the response.

3. Server shouldn't store any information about request context. Requests must be independent and idempotent (means if same request is repeated infinitely, exactly same result is retrieved)

And HTTP is just a communication protocol (a tool) that can help to achieve this.

What is process.env.PORT in Node.js?

When hosting your application on another service (like Heroku, Nodejitsu, and AWS), your host may independently configure the process.env.PORT variable for you; after all, your script runs in their environment.

Amazon's Elastic Beanstalk does this. If you try to set a static port value like 3000 instead of process.env.PORT || 3000 where 3000 is your static setting, then your application will result in a 500 gateway error because Amazon is configuring the port for you.

This is a minimal Express application that will deploy on Amazon's Elastic Beanstalk:

var express = require('express');
var app = express();

app.get('/', function (req, res) {
  res.send('Hello World!');
});

// use port 3000 unless there exists a preconfigured port
var port = process.env.PORT || 3000;

app.listen(port);

Formatting DataBinder.Eval data

After some searching on the Internet I found that it is in fact very much possible to call a custom method passing the DataBinder.Eval value.

The custom method can be written in the code behind file, but has to be declared public or protected. In my question above, I had mentioned that I tried to write the custom method in the code behind but was getting a run time error. The reason for this was that I had declared the method to be private.

So, in summary the following is a good way to use DataBinder.Eval value to get your desired output:

default.aspx

<asp:Label ID="lblNewsDate" runat="server" Text='<%# GetDateInHomepageFormat(DataBinder.Eval(Container.DataItem, "publishedDate")) )%>'></asp:Label>

default.aspx.cs code:

public partial class _Default : System.Web.UI.Page
{

    protected string GetDateInHomepageFormat(DateTime d)
    {

        string retValue = "";

        // Do all processing required and return value

        return retValue;
    }
}

Hope this helps others as well.

In angular $http service, How can I catch the "status" of error?

From the official angular documentation

// Simple GET request example :
$http.get('/someUrl').
  success(function(data, status, headers, config) {
    // this callback will be called asynchronously
    // when the response is available
  }).
  error(function(data, status, headers, config) {
    // called asynchronously if an error occurs
    // or server returns response with an error status.
  });

As you can see first parameter for error callback is data an status is second.

Difference between View and table in sql

A view is a virtual table. A view consists of rows and columns just like a table. The difference between a view and a table is that views are definitions built on top of other tables (or views), and do not hold data themselves. If data is changing in the underlying table, the same change is reflected in the view. A view can be built on top of a single table or multiple tables. It can also be built on top of another view. In the SQL Create View page, we will see how a view can be built.

Views offer the following advantages:

  1. Ease of use: A view hides the complexity of the database tables from end users. Essentially we can think of views as a layer of abstraction on top of the database tables.

  2. Space savings: Views takes very little space to store, since they do not store actual data.

  3. Additional data security: Views can include only certain columns in the table so that only the non-sensitive columns are included and exposed to the end user. In addition, some databases allow views to have different security settings, thus hiding sensitive data from prying eyes.

cursor.fetchall() vs list(cursor) in Python

cursor.fetchall() and list(cursor) are essentially the same. The different option is to not retrieve a list, and instead just loop over the bare cursor object:

for result in cursor:

This can be more efficient if the result set is large, as it doesn't have to fetch the entire result set and keep it all in memory; it can just incrementally get each item (or batch them in smaller batches).

What does "for" attribute do in HTML <label> tag?

In a nutshell what it does is refer to the id of the input, that's all:

How do I setup the InternetExplorerDriver so it works

Here is the exact solution, which worked in my case:

  1. On IE 7 or higher on Windows Vista or Windows 7, you must set the Protected Mode settings for each zone to be the same value. The value can be on or off, as long as it is the same for every zone. To set the Protected Mode settings, choose "Internet Options..." from the Tools menu, and click on the Security tab. For each zone, there will be a check box at the bottom of the tab labeled "Enable Protected Mode". Additionally, "Enhanced Protected Mode" must be disabled for IE 10 and higher. This option is found in the Advanced tab of the Internet Options dialog.

  2. System.setProperty("webdriver.ie.driver","C:\\Users\\ssin22\\Downloads\\IEDriverServer_x64_2.48.0\\IEDriverServer.exe");

package Testing;

import java.io.File;

import org.openqa.selenium.WebDriver;
import org.openqa.selenium.ie.InternetExplorerDriver;

public class LaunchIE {

    public static void main(String[] args) {
        // TODO Auto-generated method stub

        System.setProperty("webdriver.ie.driver","C:\\Users\\ssin22\\Downloads\\IEDriverServer_x64_2.48.0\\IEDriverServer.exe");

    WebDriver driver=new InternetExplorerDriver();
    driver.get("http://google.com");

    }

}

Should I check in folder "node_modules" to Git when creating a Node.js app on Heroku?

I am using this solution:

  1. Create a separate repository that holds folder node_modules. If you have native modules that should be build for specific platform then create a separate repository for each platform.

  2. Attach these repositories to your project repository with git submodule:

    git submodule add .../your_project_node_modules_windows.git node_modules_windows

    git submodule add .../your_project_node_modules_linux_x86_64 node_modules_linux_x86_64

  3. Create a link from platform-specific node_modules to node_modules directory and add node_modules to .gitignore.

  4. Run npm install.

  5. Commit submodule repository changes.

  6. Commit your project repository changes.

So you can easily switch between node_modules on different platforms (for example, if you are developing on OS X and deploying to Linux).

Why use pointers?

One reason to use pointers is so that a variable or an object can be modified in a called function.

In C++ it is a better practice to use references than pointers. Though references are essentially pointers, C++ to some extent hides the fact and makes it seem as if you are passing by value. This makes it easy to change the way the calling function receives the value without having to modify the semantics of passing it.

Consider the following examples:

Using references:

public void doSomething()
{
    int i = 10;
    doSomethingElse(i); // passes i by references since doSomethingElse() receives it
                         // by reference, but the syntax makes it appear as if i is passed
                         // by value
}

public void doSomethingElse(int& i)  // receives i as a reference
{
    cout << i << endl;
}

Using pointers:

public void doSomething()
{
    int i = 10;
    doSomethingElse(&i);
}

public void doSomethingElse(int* i)
{
    cout << *i << endl;
}

Write variable to file, including name

The default string representation for a dictionary seems to be just right:

>>> a={3: 'foo', 17: 'bar' }
>>> a
{17: 'bar', 3: 'foo'}
>>> print a
{17: 'bar', 3: 'foo'}
>>> print "a=", a
a= {17: 'bar', 3: 'foo'}

Not sure if you can get at the "variable name", since variables in Python are just labels for values. See this question.

Android how to use Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory()

As described in Documentation Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() :

Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory() Return the primary shared/external storage directory.

This is an example of how to use it reading an image :

String fileName = "stored_image.jpg";
 String baseDir = Environment.getExternalStorageDirectory().getAbsolutePath();
 String pathDir = baseDir + "/Android/data/com.mypackage.myapplication/";

 File f = new File(pathDir + File.separator + fileName);

        if(f.exists()){
          Log.d("Application", "The file " + file.getName() + " exists!";
         }else{
          Log.d("Application", "The file no longer exists!";
         }

Store boolean value in SQLite

Further to ericwa's answer. CHECK constraints can enable a pseudo boolean column by enforcing a TEXT datatype and only allowing TRUE or FALSE case specific values e.g.

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS "boolean_test"
(
    "id" INTEGER PRIMARY KEY AUTOINCREMENT
,   "boolean" TEXT NOT NULL
        CHECK( typeof("boolean") = "text" AND
               "boolean" IN ("TRUE","FALSE")
        )
);

INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES ("TRUE");
INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES ("FALSE");
INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES ("TEST");

Error: CHECK constraint failed: boolean_test

INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES ("true");

Error: CHECK constraint failed: boolean_test

INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES ("false");

Error: CHECK constraint failed: boolean_test

INSERT INTO "boolean_test" ("boolean") VALUES (1);

Error: CHECK constraint failed: boolean_test

select * from boolean_test;

id  boolean

How do I check if the mouse is over an element in jQuery?

I have answered this in another question, with all details you may need:

Detect IF hovering over element with jQuery (has 99 upvotes at the time of writing)

Basically, you can do something like:

var ishovered = oi.is(":hover");

This works only if oi is a jQuery object containing a single element. If there are multiple elements matched, you need to apply to each element, for example:

var hoveredItem = !!$('ol>li').filter(function() { return $(this).is(":hover"); });
                  // not .filter(':hover'), as we can't apply :hover on multiple elements

This was tested starting jQuery 1.7.

How do you install an APK file in the Android emulator?

Getting current device language in iOS?

You can use the displayNameForKey:value: method of NSLocale:

// get a French locale instance
NSLocale *frLocale = [[[NSLocale alloc] initWithLocaleIdentifier:@"fr_FR"] autorelease];

// use it to get translated display names of fr_FR and en_US
NSLog(@"%@", [frLocale displayNameForKey:NSLocaleIdentifier value:@"fr_FR"]);
NSLog(@"%@", [frLocale displayNameForKey:NSLocaleIdentifier value:@"en_US"]);

This will print out:

français (France)
anglais (États-Unis)

If you specify the same locale identifier for the initWithLocaleIdentifier: and also the displayNameForKey:value: method, then it will give you the native name of the language. I've discovered that if you remove the country code and use just fr and en, that it will also omit the country from the display name (on Mac OS X at least, not sure about iOS).

If REST applications are supposed to be stateless, how do you manage sessions?

Ruby: How to convert a string to boolean

In rails, I've previously done something like this:

class ApplicationController < ActionController::Base
  # ...

  private def bool_from(value)
    !!ActiveRecord::Type::Boolean.new.type_cast_from_database(value)
  end
  helper_method :bool_from

  # ...
end

Which is nice if you're trying to match your boolean strings comparisons in the same manner as rails would for your database.
