Programs & Examples On #Xssf

XSSF provides Java APIs to read / write Microsoft Excel 2007 (OOXML format .xlsx) files. This tag should be used for questions about accessing Excel 2007 files from Java applications. XSSF is managed under the Apache POI Project. Other tag to consider: [tag:apache-poi]

const newArray = array.map(({dropAttr1, dropAttr2, ...keepAttrs}) => keepAttrs)

Pandas: sum DataFrame rows for given columns

If you have just a few columns to sum, you can write:

df['e'] = df['a'] + df['b'] + df['d']

This creates new column e with the values:

   a  b   c  d   e
0  1  2  dd  5   8
1  2  3  ee  9  14
2  3  4  ff  1   8

For longer lists of columns, EdChum's answer is preferred.

How to split the name string in mysql?

Well, nothing I used worked, so I decided creating a real simple split function, hope it helps:

DECLARE inipos INTEGER;
DECLARE endpos INTEGER;
DECLARE maxlen INTEGER;
DECLARE item VARCHAR(100);
DECLARE delim VARCHAR(1);

SET delim = '|';
SET inipos = 1;
SET fullstr = CONCAT(fullstr, delim);
SET maxlen = LENGTH(fullstr);

REPEAT
    SET endpos = LOCATE(delim, fullstr, inipos);
    SET item =  SUBSTR(fullstr, inipos, endpos - inipos);

    IF item <> '' AND item IS NOT NULL THEN
        USE_THE_ITEM_STRING;
    END IF;
    SET inipos = endpos + 1;
UNTIL inipos >= maxlen END REPEAT;

What is the default access modifier in Java?

Your constructor's access modifier would be package-private(default). As you have declared the class public, it will be visible everywhere, but the constructor will not. Your constructor will be visible only in its package.

package flight.booking;

public class FlightLog // Public access modifier
{
    private SpecificFlight flight;

    FlightLog(SpecificFlight flight) // Default access modifier
    {
        this.flight = flight;
    }
}

When you do not write any constructor in your class then the compiler generates a default constructor with the same access modifier of the class. For the following example, the compiler will generate a default constructor with the public access modifier (same as class).

package flight.booking;

public class FlightLog // Public access modifier
{
    private SpecificFlight flight;
}

Can I use a binary literal in C or C++?

You can use binary literals. They are standardized in C++14. For example,

int x = 0b11000;

Support in GCC

Support in GCC began in GCC 4.3 (see https://gcc.gnu.org/gcc-4.3/changes.html) as extensions to the C language family (see https://gcc.gnu.org/onlinedocs/gcc/C-Extensions.html#C-Extensions), but since GCC 4.9 it is now recognized as either a C++14 feature or an extension (see Difference between GCC binary literals and C++14 ones?)

Support in Visual Studio

Support in Visual Studio started in Visual Studio 2015 Preview (see https://www.visualstudio.com/news/vs2015-preview-vs#C++).

How to show Page Loading div until the page has finished loading?

Here's the jQuery I ended up using, which monitors all ajax start/stop, so you don't need to add it to each ajax call:

$(document).ajaxStart(function(){
    $("#loading").removeClass('hide');
}).ajaxStop(function(){
    $("#loading").addClass('hide');
});

CSS for the loading container & content (mostly from mehyaa's answer), as well as a hide class:

#loading {
   width: 100%;
   height: 100%;
   top: 0px;
   left: 0px;
   position: fixed;
   display: block;
   opacity: 0.7;
   background-color: #fff;
   z-index: 99;
   text-align: center;
}

#loading-content {
  position: absolute;
  top: 50%;
  left: 50%;
  text-align: center;
  z-index: 100;
}

.hide{
  display: none;
}

HTML:

<div id="loading" class="hide">
  <div id="loading-content">
    Loading...
  </div>
</div>

How to read an external properties file in Maven

This answer to a similar question describes how to extend the properties plugin so it can use a remote descriptor for the properties file. The descriptor is basically a jar artifact containing a properties file (the properties file is included under src/main/resources).

The descriptor is added as a dependency to the extended properties plugin so it is on the plugin's classpath. The plugin will search the classpath for the properties file, read the file''s contents into a Properties instance, and apply those properties to the project's configuration so they can be used elsewhere.

Proper way to get page content

I used this:

<?php echo get_post_field('post_content', $post->ID); ?>

and this even more concise:

How can I deploy an iPhone application from Xcode to a real iPhone device?

This really all depends on what version of Xcode you are using as different versions use different methods to deploy to your iPhone without a provisioning profile.

Xcode 3.2.1 is a good version and is easy to sort out, but we need to know what version you are using.

How many times does each value appear in a column?

I second Dave's idea. I'm not always fond of pivot tables, but in this case they are pretty straightforward to use.

Here are my results:

It was so simple to create it that I have even recorded a macro in case you need to do this with VBA:

How to vertically align text with icon font?

vertical-align can take a unit value so you can resort to that when needed:

"You tried to execute a query that does not include the specified aggregate function"

GROUP BY can be selected from Total row in query design view in MS Access.
If Total row not shown in design view (as in my case). You can go to SQL View and add GROUP By fname etc. Then Total row will automatically show in design view.
You have to select as Expression in this row for calculated fields.

How to get first object out from List<Object> using Linq

[0] or .First() will give you the same performance whatever happens.
But your Dictionary could contains IEnumerable<Component> instead of List<Component>, and then you cant use the [] operator. That is where the difference is huge.

So for your example, it doesn't really matters, but for this code, you have no choice to use First():

var dic = new Dictionary<String, IEnumerable<Component>>();
foreach (var components in dic.Values)
{
    // you can't use [0] because components is an IEnumerable<Component>
    var firstComponent = components.First(); // be aware that it will throw an exception if components is empty.
    var depCountry = firstComponent.ComponentValue("Dep");
}

maxFileSize and acceptFileTypes in blueimp file upload plugin do not work. Why?

As suggested in an earlier answer, we need to include two additional files - jquery.fileupload-process.js and then jquery.fileupload-validate.js However as I need to perform some additional ajax calls while adding a file, I am subscribing to the fileuploadadd event to perform those calls. Regarding such a usage the author of this plugin suggested the following

Please have a look here: https://github.com/blueimp/jQuery-File-Upload/wiki/Options#wiki-callback-options

Adding additional event listeners via bind (or on method with jQuery 1.7+) method is the preferred option to preserve callback settings by the jQuery File Upload UI version.

Alternatively, you can also simply start the processing in your own callback, like this: https://github.com/blueimp/jQuery-File-Upload/blob/master/js/jquery.fileupload-process.js#L50

Using the combination of the two suggested options, the following code works perfectly for me

$fileInput.fileupload({
    url: 'upload_url',
    type: 'POST',
    dataType: 'json',
    autoUpload: false,
    disableValidation: false,
    maxFileSize: 1024 * 1024,
    messages: {
        maxFileSize: 'File exceeds maximum allowed size of 1MB',
    }
});

$fileInput.on('fileuploadadd', function(evt, data) {
    var $this = $(this);
    var validation = data.process(function () {
        return $this.fileupload('process', data);
    });

    validation.done(function() {
        makeAjaxCall('some_other_url', { fileName: data.files[0].name, fileSizeInBytes: data.files[0].size })
            .done(function(resp) {
                data.formData = data.formData || {};
                data.formData.someData = resp.SomeData;
                data.submit();
        });
    });
    validation.fail(function(data) {
        console.log('Upload error: ' + data.files[0].error);
    });
});

How to find a min/max with Ruby

You can do

[5, 10].min

or

[4, 7].max

They come from the Enumerable module, so anything that includes Enumerable will have those methods available.

v2.4 introduces own Array#min and Array#max, which are way faster than Enumerable's methods because they skip calling #each.

@nicholasklick mentions another option, Enumerable#minmax, but this time returning an array of [min, max].

[4, 5, 7, 10].minmax
=> [4, 10]

".addEventListener is not a function" why does this error occur?

Another important thing you need to note with ".addEventListener is not a function" error is that the error might be coming a result of assigning it a wrong object eg consider

let myImages = ['images/pic1.jpg','images/pic2.jpg','images/pic3.jpg','images/pic4.jpg','images/pic5.jpg'];
let i = 0;
while(i < myImages.length){
  const newImage = document.createElement('img');
  newImage.setAttribute('src',myImages[i]);
  thumbBar.appendChild(newImage);

 //Code just below will bring the said error
 myImages[i].addEventListener('click',fullImage);

 //Code just below execute properly
  newImage.addEventListener('click',fullImage);

  i++;
}

In the code Above I am basically assigning images to a div element in my html dynamically using javascript. I've done this by writing the images in an array and looping them through a while loop and adding all of them to the div element.

I've then added a click event listener for all images.

The code "myImages[i].addEventListener('click',fullImage);" will give you an error of "addEventListener is not a function" because I am chaining an addEventListener to an array object which does not have the addEventListener() function.

However for the code "newImage.addEventListener('click',fullImage);" it executes properly because the newImage object has access the function addEventListener() while the array object does not.

How to save a list to a file and read it as a list type?

pickle and other serialization packages work. So does writing it to a .py file that you can then import.

...   f.write('score = %s' % score)
...
>>> from file import score as my_list
>>> print(my_list)

Does Python SciPy need BLAS?

If you need to use the latest versions of SciPy rather than the packaged version, without going through the hassle of building BLAS and LAPACK, you can follow the below procedure.

Install linear algebra libraries from repository (for Ubuntu),

sudo apt-get install gfortran libopenblas-dev liblapack-dev

Then install SciPy, (after downloading the SciPy source): python setup.py install or

pip install scipy

As the case may be.

Task continuation on UI thread

Call the continuation with TaskScheduler.FromCurrentSynchronizationContext():

    Task UITask= task.ContinueWith(() =>

This is suitable only if the current execution context is on the UI thread.

How do you turn a Mongoose document into a plain object?

A better way of tackling an issue like this is using doc.toObject() like this

doc.toObject({ getters: true })

other options include:

  • getters: apply all getters (path and virtual getters)
  • virtuals: apply virtual getters (can override getters option)
  • minimize: remove empty objects (defaults to true)
  • transform: a transform function to apply to the resulting document before returning
  • depopulate: depopulate any populated paths, replacing them with their original refs (defaults to false)
  • versionKey: whether to include the version key (defaults to true)

so for example you can say

Model.findOne().exec((err, doc) => {
   if (!err) {
      doc.toObject({ getters: true })
      console.log('doc _id:', doc._id)
   }
})

and now it will work.

For reference, see: http://mongoosejs.com/docs/api.html#document_Document-toObject

Remove spaces from a string in VB.NET

You can also use a small function that will loop through and remove any spaces.

This is very clean and simple.

Public Shared Function RemoveXtraSpaces(strVal As String) As String

     Dim sTempstrVal As String

     sTempstrVal = ""

     For iCount = 1 To Len(strVal)
        sTempstrVal = sTempstrVal + Mid(strVal, iCount, 1).Trim
     Next

     RemoveXtraSpaces = sTempstrVal

     Return RemoveXtraSpaces

End Function

How to set the maximum memory usage for JVM?

You shouldn't have to worry about the stack leaking memory (it is highly uncommon). The only time you can have the stack get out of control is with infinite (or really deep) recursion.

This is just the heap. Sorry, didn't read your question fully at first.

You need to run the JVM with the following command line argument.

-Xmx<ammount of memory>

Example:

-Xmx1024m

That will allow a max of 1GB of memory for the JVM.

Bootstrap 3 panel header with buttons wrong position

You should apply a "clearfix" to clear the parent element. Next thing, the h4 for the header title, extend all the way across the header, so after you apply clearfix, it will push down the child element causing the header div to have a larger height.

Here is a fix, just replace it with your code.

  <div class="panel-heading clearfix">
     <b>Panel header</b>
       <div class="btn-group pull-right">
        <a href="#" class="btn btn-default btn-sm">## Lock</a>

How to access property of anonymous type in C#?

If you want a strongly typed list of anonymous types, you'll need to make the list an anonymous type too. The easiest way to do this is to project a sequence such as an array into a list, e.g.

var nodes = (new[] { new { Checked = false, /* etc */ } }).ToList();

Then you'll be able to access it like:

nodes.Any(n => n.Checked);

Because of the way the compiler works, the following then should also work once you have created the list, because the anonymous types have the same structure so they are also the same type. I don't have a compiler to hand to verify this though.

nodes.Add(new { Checked = false, /* etc */ });

How to define constants in Visual C# like #define in C?

In C#, per MSDN library, we have the "const" keyword that does the work of the "#define" keyword in other languages.

"...when the compiler encounters a constant identifier in C# source code (for example, months), it substitutes the literal value directly into the intermediate language (IL) code that it produces." ( https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms173119.aspx )

Initialize constants at time of declaration since there is no changing them.

java.net.URL read stream to byte[]

The content length is just a HTTP header. You cannot trust it. Just read everything you can from the stream.

Available is definitely wrong. It's just the number of bytes that can be read without blocking.

Another issue is your resource handling. Closing the stream has to happen in any case. try/catch/finally will do that.

How to call codeigniter controller function from view

I would like to answer this question as this comes all times up in searches --

You can call a controller method in view, but please note that this is not a good practice in any MVC including codeigniter.

How to load data from a text file in a PostgreSQL database?

Let consider that your data are in the file values.txt and that you want to import them in the database table myTable then the following query does the job

COPY myTable FROM 'value.txt' (DELIMITER('|'));

https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/static/sql-copy.html

validation of input text field in html using javascript

If you are not using jQuery then I would simply write a validation method that you can be fired when the form is submitted. The method can validate the text fields to make sure that they are not empty or the default value. The method will return a bool value and if it is false you can fire off your alert and assign classes to highlight the fields that did not pass validation.

HTML:

<form name="form1" method="" action="" onsubmit="return validateForm(this)">
<input type="text" name="name" value="Name"/><br />
<input type="text" name="addressLine01" value="Address Line 1"/><br />
<input type="submit"/>
</form>

JavaScript:

function validateForm(form) {

    var nameField = form.name;
    var addressLine01 = form.addressLine01;

    if (isNotEmpty(nameField)) {
        if(isNotEmpty(addressLine01)) {
            return true;
        {
    {
    return false;
}

function isNotEmpty(field) {

    var fieldData = field.value;

    if (fieldData.length == 0 || fieldData == "" || fieldData == fieldData) {

        field.className = "FieldError"; //Classs to highlight error
        alert("Please correct the errors in order to continue.");
        return false;
    } else {

        field.className = "FieldOk"; //Resets field back to default
        return true; //Submits form
    }
}

The validateForm method assigns the elements you want to validate and then in this case calls the isNotEmpty method to validate if the field is empty or has not been changed from the default value. it continuously calls the inNotEmpty method until it returns a value of true or if the conditional fails for that field it will return false.

Give this a shot and let me know if it helps or if you have any questions. of course you can write additional custom methods to validate numbers only, email address, valid URL, etc.

If you use jQuery at all I would look into trying out the jQuery Validation plug-in. I have been using it for my last few projects and it is pretty nice. Check it out if you get a chance. http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Validation

Save file to specific folder with curl command

For powershell in Windows, you can add relative path + filename to --output flag:

curl -L  http://github.com/GorvGoyl/Notion-Boost-browser-extension/archive/master.zip --output build_firefox/master-repo.zip

here build_firefox is relative folder.

Min / Max Validator in Angular 2 Final

Angualr itself provide a min and max number validation functionality.

Example - we have a field like age range then see the use of validation.

  age_range : ['',  Validators.min(1), Validators.max(18)]]

the age always be between 1 to 18.

Setting HttpContext.Current.Session in a unit test

I worte something about this a while ago.

Unit Testing HttpContext.Current.Session in MVC3 .NET

Hope it helps.

[TestInitialize]
public void TestSetup()
{
    // We need to setup the Current HTTP Context as follows:

    // Step 1: Setup the HTTP Request
    var httpRequest = new HttpRequest("", "http://localhost/", "");

    // Step 2: Setup the HTTP Response
    var httpResponce = new HttpResponse(new StringWriter());

    // Step 3: Setup the Http Context
    var httpContext = new HttpContext(httpRequest, httpResponce);
    var sessionContainer =
        new HttpSessionStateContainer("id",

Add class to <html> with Javascript?

You should append class not overwrite it

var headCSS = document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].getAttribute("class") || "";
document.getElementsByTagName("html")[0].setAttribute("class",headCSS +"foo");

I would still recommend using jQuery to avoid browser incompatibilities

Add list to set?

return my_set

Python matplotlib multiple bars

after looking for a similar solution and not finding anything flexible enough, I decided to write my own function for it. It allows you to have as many bars per group as you wish and specify both the width of a group as well as the individual widths of the bars within the groups.

Enjoy:

from matplotlib import pyplot as plt

def bar_plot(ax, data, colors=None, total_width=0.8, single_width=1, legend=True):
    """Draws a bar plot with multiple bars per data point.

    Parameters
    ----------
    ax : matplotlib.pyplot.axis
        The axis we want to draw our plot on.

    data: dictionary
        A dictionary containing the data we want to plot. Keys are the names of the
        data, the items is a list of the values.

        Example:
        data = {
            "x":[1,2,3],
            "y":[1,2,3],
            "z":[1,2,3],
        }

    colors : array-like, optional
        A list of colors which are used for the bars. If None, the colors
        will be the standard matplotlib color cyle. (default: None)

    total_width : float, optional, default: 0.8
        The width of a bar group. 0.8 means that 80% of the x-axis is covered
        by bars and 20% will be spaces between the bars.

    single_width: float, optional, default: 1
        The relative width of a single bar within a group. 1 means the bars
        will touch eachother within a group, values less than 1 will make
        these bars thinner.

    legend: bool, optional, default: True
        If this is set to true, a legend will be added to the axis.
    """

    # Check if colors where provided, otherwhise use the default color cycle
    if colors is None:
        colors = plt.rcParams['axes.prop_cycle'].by_key()['color']

    # Number of bars per group
    n_bars = len(data)

    # The width of a single bar
    bar_width = total_width / n_bars

    # List containing handles for the drawn bars, used for the legend
    bars = []

    # Iterate over all data
    for i, (name, values) in enumerate(data.items()):
        # The offset in x direction of that bar
        x_offset = (i - n_bars / 2) * bar_width + bar_width / 2

        # Draw a bar for every value of that type
        for x, y in enumerate(values):
            bar = ax.bar(x + x_offset, y, width=bar_width * single_width, color=colors[i % len(colors)])

        # Add a handle to the last drawn bar, which we'll need for the legend
        bars.append(bar[0])

    # Draw legend if we need
    if legend:
        ax.legend(bars, data.keys())

if __name__ == "__main__":
    # Usage example:
    data = {
        "a": [1, 2, 3, 2, 1],
        "b": [2, 3, 4, 3, 1],
        "c": [3, 2, 1, 4, 2],
        "d": [5, 9, 2, 1, 8],
        "e": [1, 3, 2, 2, 3],
        "f": [4, 3, 1, 1, 4],
    }

    fig, ax = plt.subplots()
    bar_plot(ax, data, total_width=.8, single_width=.9)
    plt.show()

Output:

InvalidKeyException : Illegal Key Size - Java code throwing exception for encryption class - how to fix?

If you are still recieving the InvalidKeyException when running my AES encryption program with 256 bit keys, but not with 128 bit keys, it is because you have not installed the new policy JAR files correctly, and has nothing to do with BouncyCastle (which is also restrained by those policy files). Try uninstalling, then re-installing java and then replaceing the old jar's with the new unlimited strength ones. Other than that, I'm out of ideas, best of luck.

You can see the policy files themselves if you open up the lib/security/local_policy.jar and US_export_policy.jar files in winzip and look at the conatined *.policy files in notepad and make sure they look like this:

default_local.policy:

    // Country-specific policy file for countries with no limits on crypto strength.
grant {
    // There is no restriction to any algorithms.
    permission javax.crypto.CryptoAllPermission;
};

default_US_export.policy:

// Manufacturing policy file.
grant {
    // There is no restriction to any algorithms.
    permission javax.crypto.CryptoAllPermission;
};

No Spring WebApplicationInitializer types detected on classpath

tomcat-maven-plugin in test

Tomcat usually does not add classes in src/test/java to the classpath. They are missing if you run tomcat in scope test. To order tomcat to respect classes in test, use -Dmaven.tomcat.useTestClasspath=true or add

<properties>
   <maven.tomcat.useTestClasspath>true</maven.tomcat.useTestClasspath>
</properties>

JavaScript set object key by variable

You need to make the object first, then use [] to set it.

var key = "happyCount";
var obj = {};
obj[key] = someValueArray;
myArray.push(obj);

UPDATE 2018:

If you're able to use ES6 and Babel, you can use this new feature:

{
    [yourKeyVariable]: someValueArray,
}

phantomjs not waiting for "full" page load

I found this solution useful in a NodeJS app. I use it just in desperate cases because it launches a timeout in order to wait for the full page load.

The second argument is the callback function which is going to be called once the response is ready.

phantom = require('phantom');

var fullLoad = function(anUrl, callbackDone) {
    phantom.create(function (ph) {
        ph.createPage(function (page) {
            page.open(anUrl, function (status) {
                if (status !== 'success') {
                    console.error("pahtom: error opening " + anUrl, status);
                    ph.exit();
                } else {
                    // timeOut
                    global.setTimeout(function () {
                        page.evaluate(function () {
                            return document.documentElement.innerHTML;
                        }, function (result) {
                            ph.exit(); // EXTREMLY IMPORTANT
                            callbackDone(result); // callback
                        });
                    }, 5000);
                }
            });
        });
    });
}

var callback = function(htmlBody) {
    // do smth with the htmlBody
}

fullLoad('your/url/', callback);

How do I create ColorStateList programmatically?

How do I dynamically set HTML5 data- attributes using react?

Note - if you want to pass a data attribute to a React Component, you need to handle them a little differently than other props.

2 options

Don't use camel case

<Option data-img-src='value' ... />

And then in the component, because of the dashes, you need to refer to the prop in quotes.

// @flow
class Option extends React.Component {

  props: {
    'data-img-src': string
  }

And when you refer to it later, you don't use the dot syntax

  render () {
    return (
      <option data-img-src={this.props['data-img-src']} >...</option>
    )
  }
}

Or use camel case

<Option dataImgSrc='value' ... />

And then in the component, you need to convert.

// @flow
class Option extends React.Component {

  props: {
    dataImgSrc: string
  }

And when you refer to it later, you don't use the dot syntax

  render () {
    return (
      <option data-img-src={this.props.dataImgSrc} >...</option>
    )
  }
}

Mainly just realize data- attributes and aria- attributes are treated specially. You are allowed to use hyphens in the attribute name in those two cases.

JavaScript: Upload file

Pure JS

You can use fetch optionally with await-try-catch

let photo = document.getElementById("image-file").files[0];
let formData = new FormData();

formData.append("photo", photo);
fetch('/upload/image', {method: "POST", body: formData});

    formData.append("photo", photo);
    formData.append("user", JSON.stringify(user));

    const ctrl = new AbortController() // timeout
    setTimeout(() => ctrl.abort(), 5000);

    try {
       let r = await fetch('/upload/image',

SUMMARY

  • In server side you can read original file name (and other info) which is automatically included to request by browser in filename formData parameter.
  • You do NOT need to set request header Content-Type to multipart/form-data - this will be set automatically by browser.
  • Instead of /upload/image you can use full address like http://.../upload/image.
  • If you want to send many files in single request use multiple attribute: <input multiple type=... />, and attach all chosen files to formData in similar way (e.g. photo2=...files[2];... formData.append("photo2", photo2);)
  • You can include additional data (json) to request e.g. let user = {name:'john', age:34} in this way: formData.append("user", JSON.stringify(user));
  • You can set timeout: for fetch using AbortController, for old approach by xhr.timeout= milisec
  • This solutions should work on all major browsers.

How to convert an image to base64 encoding?

Easy:

$imagedata = file_get_contents("/path/to/image.jpg");
             // alternatively specify an URL, if PHP settings allow
$base64 = base64_encode($imagedata);

bear in mind that this will enlarge the data by 33%, and you'll have problems with files whose size exceed your memory_limit.

Delete the first five characters on any line of a text file in Linux with sed

Use cut:

cut -c6-

This prints each line of the input starting at column 6 (the first column is 1).

How to edit Docker container files from the host?

Whilst it is possible, and the other answers explain how, you should avoid editing files in the Union File System if you can.

Your definition of volumes isn't quite right - it's more about bypassing the Union File System than exposing files on the host. For example, if I do:

$ docker run --name="test" -v /volume-test debian echo "test"

The directory /volume-test inside the container will not be part of the Union File System and instead will exist somewhere on the host. I haven't specified where on the host, as I may not care - I'm not exposing host files, just creating a directory that is shareable between containers and the host. You can find out exactly where it is on the host with:

$ docker inspect -f "{{.Volumes}}" test
map[/volume_test:/var/lib/docker/vfs/dir/b7fff1922e25f0df949e650dfa885dbc304d9d213f703250cf5857446d104895]

If you really need to just make a quick edit to a file to test something, either use docker exec to get a shell in the container and edit directly, or use docker cp to copy the file out, edit on the host and copy back in.

How can I validate a string to only allow alphanumeric characters in it?

Based on cletus's answer you may create new extension.

public static class StringExtensions
{
    public static bool IsAlphaNumeric(this string str)
    {
        if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(str))
            return false;

        Regex r = new Regex("^[a-zA-Z0-9]*$");
        return r.IsMatch(str);
    }
}

MySQL select 10 random rows from 600K rows fast

Well if you have no gaps in your keys and they are all numeric you can calculate random numbers and select those lines. but this will probably not be the case.

So one solution would be the following:

SELECT * FROM table WHERE key >= FLOOR(RAND()*MAX(id)) LIMIT 1

which will basically ensure that you get a random number in the range of your keys and then you select the next best which is greater. you have to do this 10 times.

however this is NOT really random because your keys will most likely not be distributed evenly.

It's really a big problem and not easy to solve fulfilling all the requirements, MySQL's rand() is the best you can get if you really want 10 random rows.

There is however another solution which is fast but also has a trade off when it comes to randomness, but may suit you better. Read about it here: How can i optimize MySQL's ORDER BY RAND() function?

Question is how random do you need it to be.

Can you explain a bit more so I can give you a good solution.

For example a company I worked with had a solution where they needed absolute randomness extremely fast. They ended up with pre-populating the database with random values that were selected descending and set to different random values afterwards again.

If you hardly ever update you could also fill an incrementing id so you have no gaps and just can calculate random keys before selecting... It depends on the use case!

What is the difference between application server and web server?

In short,
The web server is a server that serves static web pages to users via HTTP requests.
The application server is a server that hosts the business logic for a system.
It often hosts both long-running/batch processes and/or interop services not meant for human consumption (REST/JSON services, SOAP, RPC, etc).

Margin on child element moves parent element

Using top instead of margin-top is another possible solution, if appropriate.

How can I open a popup window with a fixed size using the HREF tag?

Plain HTML does not support this. You'll need to use some JavaScript code.

Also, note that large parts of the world are using a popup blocker nowadays. You may want to reconsider your design!

What is the "hasClass" function with plain JavaScript?

Element.matches()

Instead of $(element).hasClass('example') in jQuery, you can use element.matches('.example') in plain JavaScript:

Is there "\n" equivalent in VBscript?

As David and Remou pointed out, vbCrLf if you want a carriage-return-linefeed combination. Otherwise, Chr(13) and Chr(10) (although some VB-derivatives have vbCr and vbLf; VBScript may well have those, worth checking before using Chr).

How to detect window.print() finish

I think the window focus approach is the correct one. Here is an example in which I wanted to open a PDF url blob in a hidden iframe and print it. After printed or canceled, I wanted to remove the iframe.

/**
 * printBlob will create if not exists an iframe to load
 * the pdf. Once the window is loaded, the PDF is printed.
 * It then creates a one-time event to remove the iframe from
 * the window.
 * @param {string} src Blob or any printable url.
 */
export const printBlob = (src) => {
  if (typeof window === 'undefined') {
    throw new Error('You cannot print url without defined window.');
  }
  const iframeId = 'pdf-print-iframe';
  let iframe = document.getElementById(iframeId);
  if (!iframe) {
    iframe = document.createElement('iframe');
    iframe.setAttribute('id', iframeId);
    iframe.setAttribute('style', 'position:absolute;left:-9999px');
    document.body.append(iframe);
  }
  iframe.setAttribute('src', src);
  iframe.addEventListener('load', () => {
    iframe.contentWindow.focus();
    iframe.contentWindow.print();
    const infanticide = () => {
      iframe.parentElement.removeChild(iframe);
      window.removeEventListener('focus', infanticide);
    }
    window.addEventListener('focus', infanticide);
  });
};

You must add a reference to assembly 'netstandard, Version=2.0.0.0

We started getting this error on the production server after deploying the application migrated from 4.6.1 to 4.7.2.

We noticed that the .NET framework 4.7.2 was not installed there. In order to solve this issue we did the following steps:

  1. Installed the .NET Framework 4.7.2 from:

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4054530/microsoft-net-framework-4-7-2-offline-installer-for-windows

  2. Restarted the machine

  3. Confirmed the .NET Framework version with the help of How do I find the .NET version?

Running the application again with the .Net Framework 4.7.2 version installed on the machine fixed the issue.

How do I show a message in the foreach loop?

You are looking to see if a single value is in an array. Use in_array.

However note that case is important, as are any leading or trailing spaces. Use var_dump to find out the length of the strings too, and see if they fit.

Correct way to integrate jQuery plugins in AngularJS

i have alreay 2 situations where directives and services/factories didnt play well.

the scenario is that i have (had) a directive that has dependency injection of a service, and from the directive i ask the service to make an ajax call (with $http).

in the end, in both cases the ng-Repeat did not file at all, even when i gave the array an initial value.

i even tried to make a directive with a controller and an isolated-scope

only when i moved everything to a controller and it worked like magic.

Convert dictionary to bytes and back again python?

If you need to convert the dictionary to binary, you need to convert it to a string (JSON) as described in the previous answer, then you can convert it to binary.

For example:

my_dict = {'key' : [1,2,3]}

import json
def dict_to_binary(the_dict):
    str = json.dumps(the_dict)
    binary = ' '.join(format(ord(letter), 'b') for letter in str)
    return binary

def binary_to_dict(the_binary):
    jsn = ''.join(chr(int(x, 2)) for x in the_binary.split())
    d = json.loads(jsn)
    return d

bin = dict_to_binary(my_dict)
print bin

dct = binary_to_dict(bin)
print dct

will give the output

1111011 100010 1101011 100010 111010 100000 1011011 110001 101100 100000 110010 101100 100000 110011 1011101 1111101

How to push both key and value into an Array in Jquery

There are no keys in JavaScript arrays. Use objects for that purpose.

var obj = {};

$.getJSON("displayjson.php",function (data) {
    $.each(data.news, function (i, news) {
        obj[news.title] = news.link;
    });
});

// later:
$.each(obj, function (index, value) {
    alert( index + ' : ' + value );
});

In JavaScript, objects fulfill the role of associative arrays. Be aware that objects do not have a defined "sort order" when iterating them (see below).

However, In your case it is not really clear to me why you transfer data from the original object (data.news) at all. Why do you not simply pass a reference to that object around?

You can combine objects and arrays to achieve predictable iteration and key/value behavior:

var arr = [];

$.getJSON("displayjson.php",function (data) {
    $.each(data.news, function (i, news) {
        arr.push({
            title: news.title,
            link:  news.link
        });
    });
});

// later:
$.each(arr, function (index, value) {
    alert( value.title + ' : ' + value.link );
});

How to git ignore subfolders / subdirectories?

Seems this page still shows up on the top of Google search after so many years...

Modern versions of Git support nesting .gitignore files within a single repo. Just place a .gitignore file in the subdirectory that you want ignored. Use a single asterisk to match everything in that directory:

echo "*" > /path/to/bin/Debug/.gitignore
echo "*" > /path/to/bin/Release/.gitignore

If you've made previous commits, remember to remove previously tracked files:

git rm -rf /path/to/bin/Debug
git rm -rf /path/to/bin/Release

You can confirm it by doing git status to show you all the files removed from tracking.

How to check for an empty struct?

Keep in mind that with pointers to struct you'd have to dereference the variable and not compare it with a pointer to empty struct:

session := &Session{}
if (Session{}) == *session {
    fmt.Println("session is empty")
}

Check this playground.

Also here you can see that a struct holding a property which is a slice of pointers cannot be compared the same way...

How to stop a function

def player(game_over):
    do something here
    game_over = check_winner() #Here we tell check_winner to run and tell us what game_over should be, either true or false
    if not game_over:
        computer(game_over) #We are only going to do this if check_winner comes back as False

def check_winner():
    check something
    #here needs to be an if / then statement deciding if the game is over, return True if over, false if not
    if score == 100:
        return True
    else:
        return False

def computer(game_over):
    do something here
    game_over = check_winner() #Here we tell check_winner to run and tell us what game_over should be, either true or false
    if not game_over:
        player(game_over) #We are only going to do this if check_winner comes back as False

game_over = False #We need a variable to hold wether the game is over or not, we'll start it out being false.
player(game_over) #Start your loops, sending in the status of game_over

Above is a pretty simple example... I made up a statement for check_winner using score = 100 to denote the game being over.

You will want to use similar method of passing score into check_winner, using game_over = check_winner(score). Then you can create a score at the beginning of your program and pass it through to computer and player just like game_over is being handled.

SET versus SELECT when assigning variables?

When writing queries, this difference should be kept in mind :

DECLARE @A INT = 2

SELECT  @A = TBL.A
FROM    ( SELECT 1 A ) TBL
WHERE   1 = 2

SELECT  @A
/* @A is 2*/

---------------------------------------------------------------

DECLARE @A INT = 2

SET @A = (
            SELECT  TBL.A
            FROM    ( SELECT 1 A) TBL
            WHERE   1 = 2
         )

SELECT  @A
/* @A is null*/

IOException: Too many open files

You can handle the fds yourself. The exec in java returns a Process object. Intermittently check if the process is still running. Once it has completed close the processes STDERR, STDIN, and STDOUT streams (e.g. proc.getErrorStream.close()). That will mitigate the leaks.

What is the difference between a web API and a web service?

All WebServices is API but all API is not WebServices, API which is exposed on Web is called web services.

Golang read request body

Inspecting and mocking request body

When you first read the body, you have to store it so once you're done with it, you can set a new io.ReadCloser as the request body constructed from the original data. So when you advance in the chain, the next handler can read the same body.

One option is to read the whole body using ioutil.ReadAll(), which gives you the body as a byte slice.

You may use bytes.NewBuffer() to obtain an io.Reader from a byte slice.

The last missing piece is to make the io.Reader an io.ReadCloser, because bytes.Buffer does not have a Close() method. For this you may use ioutil.NopCloser() which wraps an io.Reader, and returns an io.ReadCloser, whose added Close() method will be a no-op (does nothing).

Note that you may even modify the contents of the byte slice you use to create the "new" body. You have full control over it.

Care must be taken though, as there might be other HTTP fields like content-length and checksums which may become invalid if you modify only the data. If subsequent handlers check those, you would also need to modify those too!

Inspecting / modifying response body

If you also want to read the response body, then you have to wrap the http.ResponseWriter you get, and pass the wrapper on the chain. This wrapper may cache the data sent out, which you can inspect either after, on on-the-fly (as the subsequent handlers write to it).

Here's a simple ResponseWriter wrapper, which just caches the data, so it'll be available after the subsequent handler returns:

type MyResponseWriter struct {
    http.ResponseWriter
    buf *bytes.Buffer
}

func (mrw *MyResponseWriter) Write(p []byte) (int, error) {
    return mrw.buf.Write(p)
}

Note that MyResponseWriter.Write() just writes the data to a buffer. You may also choose to inspect it on-the-fly (in the Write() method) and write the data immediately to the wrapped / embedded ResponseWriter. You may even modify the data. You have full control.

Care must be taken again though, as the subsequent handlers may also send HTTP response headers related to the response data –such as length or checksums– which may also become invalid if you alter the response data.

Full example

Putting the pieces together, here's a full working example:

func loginmw(handler http.Handler) http.Handler {
    return http.HandlerFunc(func(w http.ResponseWriter, r *http.Request) {
        body, err := ioutil.ReadAll(r.Body)
        if err != nil {
            log.Printf("Error reading body: %v", err)
            http.Error(w, "can't read body", http.StatusBadRequest)
            return
        }

        // Work / inspect body. You may even modify it!

        // And now set a new body, which will simulate the same data we read:
        r.Body = ioutil.NopCloser(bytes.NewBuffer(body))

        // Create a response wrapper:
        mrw := &MyResponseWriter{
            ResponseWriter: w,
            buf:            &bytes.Buffer{},
        }

        // Call next handler, passing the response wrapper:
        handler.ServeHTTP(mrw, r)

        // Now inspect response, and finally send it out:
        // (You can also modify it before sending it out!)
        if _, err := io.Copy(w, mrw.buf); err != nil {
            log.Printf("Failed to send out response: %v", err)
        }
    })
}

NullPointerException in eclipse in Eclipse itself at PartServiceImpl.internalFixContext

After exiting eclipse I moved .eclipse (found in the user's home directory) to .eclipse.old (just in case I may have had to undo). The error does not show up any more and my projects are working fine after restarting eclipse.

Caution: I have a simple setup and this may not be the best for environments with advanced settings.

I am posting this as a separate answer as previously listed methods did not work for me.

library not found for -lPods

CocoaPods' wiki on GitHub has the answer right in their FAQ:

  • Go to Product > Edit Scheme
  • Click on Build
  • Add the Pods static library, and make sure it's at the top of the list
  • Clean and build again
  • If that doesn't work, verify that the source for the spec you are trying to include has been pulled from github. Do this by looking in <Project Dir>/Pods/<Name of spec you are trying to include>. If it is empty (it should not be), verify that the ~/.cocoapods/master/<spec>/<spec>.podspec has the correct github url in it.
  • If still doesn't work, check your XCode build locations settings. Go to Preferences -> Locations -> Derived Data -> Advanced and set build location to "Relative to Workspace".

Screen shot

The SQL OVER() clause - when and why is it useful?

If you only wanted to GROUP BY the SalesOrderID then you wouldn't be able to include the ProductID and OrderQty columns in the SELECT clause.

The PARTITION BY clause let's you break up your aggregate functions. One obvious and useful example would be if you wanted to generate line numbers for order lines on an order:

SELECT
    O.order_id,
    O.order_date,
    ROW_NUMBER() OVER(PARTITION BY O.order_id) AS line_item_no,
    OL.product_id
FROM
    Orders O
INNER JOIN Order_Lines OL ON OL.order_id = O.order_id

(My syntax might be off slightly)

You would then get back something like:

order_id    order_date    line_item_no    product_id
--------    ----------    ------------    ----------
    1       2011-05-02         1              5
    1       2011-05-02         2              4
    1       2011-05-02         3              7
    2       2011-05-12         1              8
    2       2011-05-12         2              1

Can we define min-margin and max-margin, max-padding and min-padding in css?

@vigilante_stark's answer worked for me. It can be used to set a minimum "approximately" fixed margin in pixels. But in a responsive layout, when the width of the page is increasing margin can be increased by a percentage according to the given percentage as well. I used it as follows

example-class{
  margin: 0 calc(20px + 5%) 0 0;
}

How to set a default entity property value with Hibernate

One solution is to have your getter check to see if whatever value you are working with is null (or whatever its non-initialized state would be) and if it's equal to that, just return your default value:

public String getStringValue(){
     return (this.stringValue == null) ? "Default" : stringValue;
}

What is Turing Complete?

Here is the simplest explanation

Alan Turing created a machine that can take a program, run that program, and show some result. But then he had to create different machines for different programs. So he created "Universal Turing Machine" that can take ANY program and run it.

Programming languages are similar to those machines (although virtual). They take programs and run them. Now, a programing language is called "Turing complete", if it can run any program (irrespective of the language) that a Turing machine can run given enough time and memory.

For example: Let's say there is a program that takes 10 numbers and adds them. A Turing machine can easily run this program. But now imagine that for some reason your programming language can't perform the same addition. This would make it "Turing incomplete" (so to speak). On the other hand, if it can run any program that the universal Turing machine can run, then it's Turing complete.

Most modern programming languages (e.g. Java, JavaScript, Perl, etc.) are all Turing complete because they each implement all the features required to run programs like addition, multiplication, if-else condition, return statements, ways to store/retrieve/erase data and so on.

Update: You can learn more on my blog post: "JavaScript Is Turing Complete" — Explained

Execute the setInterval function without delay the first time

actually the quickest is to do

interval = setInterval(myFunction(),45000)

this will call myfunction, and then will do it agaian every 45 seconds which is different than doing

interval = setInterval(myfunction, 45000)

which won't call it, but schedule it only

I'm getting an error "invalid use of incomplete type 'class map'

Your first usage of Map is inside a function in the combat class. That happens before Map is defined, hence the error.

A forward declaration only says that a particular class will be defined later, so it's ok to reference it or have pointers to objects, etc. However a forward declaration does not say what members a class has, so as far as the compiler is concerned you can't use any of them until Map is fully declared.

The solution is to follow the C++ pattern of the class declaration in a .h file and the function bodies in a .cpp. That way all the declarations appear before the first definitions, and the compiler knows what it's working with.

how to draw directed graphs using networkx in python?

I only put this in for completeness. I've learned plenty from marius and mdml. Here are the edge weights. Sorry about the arrows. Looks like I'm not the only one saying it can't be helped. I couldn't render this with ipython notebook I had to go straight from python which was the problem with getting my edge weights in sooner.

How do I REALLY reset the Visual Studio window layout?

How about running the following from command line,

Devenv.exe /ResetSettings

You could also save those settings in to a file, like so,

Devenv.exe /ResetSettings "C:\My Files\MySettings.vssettings"

The /ResetSettings switch, Restores Visual Studio default settings. Optionally resets the settings to the specified .vssettings file.

(apply on Mac, and probably other Unixes)

Actually there is a problem with the wc approach: it does not count the last line if it does not terminate with the end of line symbol.

Use this instead

nbLines=$(cat -n file.txt | tail -n 1 | cut -f1 | xargs)

or even better (thanks gniourf_gniourf):

nblines=$(grep -c '' file.txt)

Note: The awk approach by chilicuil also works.

A static block executes once in the life cycle of any program, another property of static block is that it executes before the main method.

Python mock multiple return values

You can assign an iterable to side_effect, and the mock will return the next value in the sequence each time it is called:

>>> from unittest.mock import Mock
>>> m = Mock()
>>> m.side_effect = ['foo', 'bar', 'baz']
>>> m()
'foo'
>>> m()
'bar'
>>> m()
'baz'

Quoting the Mock() documentation:

If side_effect is an iterable then each call to the mock will return the next value from the iterable.

Run automatically program on startup under linux ubuntu

sudo mv /filename /etc/init.d/
sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/filename
sudo update-rc.d filename defaults

Script should now start on boot. Note that this method also works with both hard links and symbolic links (ln).

Edit

At this point in the boot process PATH isn't set yet, so it is critical that absolute paths are used throughout. BUT, as pointed out in the comments by Steve HHH, explicitly declaring the full file path (/etc/init.d/filename) for the update-rc.d command is not valid in most versions of Linux. Per the manpage for update-rc.d, the second parameter is a script located in /etc/init.d/*. Updated above code to reflect this.

Another Edit

Also as pointed out in the comments (by Charles Brandt), /filename must be an init style script. A good template was also provided - https://github.com/fhd/init-script-template.

Another link to another article just to avoid possible link rot (although it would be saddening if GitHub died) - http://www.linux.com/learn/tutorials/442412-managing-linux-daemons-with-init-scripts

yetAnother Edit

As pointed out in the comments (by Russell Yan), This works only on default mode of update-rc.d.

According to manual of update-rc.d, it can run on two modes, "the machines using the legacy mode will have a file /etc/init.d/.legacy-bootordering", in which case you have to pass sequence and runlevel configuration through command line arguments.

The equivalent argument set for the above example is

sudo update-rc.d filename start 20 2 3 4 5 . stop 20 0 1 6 .

load Js file in HTML

I had the same problem, and found the answer. If you use node.js with express, you need to give it its own function in order for the js file to be reached. For example:

const script = path.join(__dirname, 'script.js');
const server = express().get('/', (req, res) => res.sendFile(script))

How to restore to a different database in sql server?

It is actually a bit simpler than restoring to the same server. Basically, you just walk through the "Restore Database" options. Here is a tutorial for you:

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/how-do-i-restore-a-sql-server-database-to-a-new-server/454

Especially since this is a non-production restore, you can feel comfortable just trying it out without worrying about the details too much. Just put your SQL files where you want them on your new server and give it whatever name you want and you are good to go.

How to delete an SVN project from SVN repository

It's easy to believe that deleting the whole Subversion repository requires "informing" Subversion that you're going to delete the repository. But Subversion only cares about managing a repository once it's created, not whether the repository exists or not ( if that makes sense ). It goes like this: the Subversion tools and commands are not adversely affected by just deleting your repository directory with the regular operating system utilities (like rm -R). A repository directory is not the same thing as an installed program directory, where deleting a program without uninstalling it might leave behind erratic config files or other dependencies. A repository is 100% self-contained in its directory, and deleting it is harmless (besides losing your project history). You just clean the slate to create a new Subversion repository and import your next project.

Using IF..ELSE in UPDATE (SQL server 2005 and/or ACCESS 2007)

this should work

update table_name
  set column_b = case
                  when column_a = 1 then 'Y'
                  else null
                 end,
  set column_c = case
                  when column_a = 2 then 'Y'
                  else null
                 end,
  set column_d = case
                  when column_a = 3 then 'Y'
                  else null
                 end
where
 conditions

the question is why would you want to do that...you may want to rethink the data model. you can replace null with whatever you want.

Warning: mysqli_num_rows() expects parameter 1 to be mysqli_result, boolean given in

The problem is your query returned false meaning there was an error in your query. After your query you could do the following:

if (!$result) {
    die(mysqli_error($link));
}

Or you could combine it with your query:

$results = mysqli_query($link, $query) or die(mysqli_error($link));

That will print out your error.

Also... you need to sanitize your input. You can't just take user input and put that into a query. Try this:

$query = "SELECT * FROM shopsy_db WHERE name LIKE '%" . mysqli_real_escape_string($link, $searchTerm) . "%'";

In reply to: Table 'sookehhh_shopsy_db.sookehhh_shopsy_db' doesn't exist

Are you sure the table name is sookehhh_shopsy_db? maybe it's really like users or something.

How to create standard Borderless buttons (like in the design guideline mentioned)?

Another solution that should work on both older and newer android platform is to use

android:background="@android:color/transparent"

attribute for Button view. But after adding above line button will not provide touch feedback.

To provide touch feedback add the following code to Activity class

button.setOnTouchListener(new View.OnTouchListener() {
    @Override
    public boolean onTouch(View view, MotionEvent event) {
        switch (event.getAction())
        {
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_DOWN:
                ((Button)view).setBackgroundColor(Color.LTGRAY);
                break;
            case MotionEvent.ACTION_UP:
                ((Button)view).setBackgroundColor(Color.TRANSPARENT);
        }
        return false;
    }
});

Its working fine for me.

How to change the color of header bar and address bar in newest Chrome version on Lollipop?

From the Official documentation,

For example, to set the background color to orange:

<meta name="theme-color" content="#db5945">

In addition, Chrome will show beautiful high-res favicons when they’re provided. Chrome for Android picks the highest res icon that you provide, and we recommend providing a 192×192px PNG file. For example:

<link rel="icon" sizes="192x192" href="nice-highres.png">

Creating an instance of class

   /* 1 */ Foo* foo1 = new Foo ();

Creates an object of type Foo in dynamic memory. foo1 points to it. Normally, you wouldn't use raw pointers in C++, but rather a smart pointer. If Foo was a POD-type, this would perform value-initialization (it doesn't apply here).

   /* 2 */ Foo* foo2 = new Foo;

Identical to before, because Foo is not a POD type.

   /* 3 */ Foo foo3;

Creates a Foo object called foo3 in automatic storage.

   /* 4 */ Foo foo4 = Foo::Foo();

Uses copy-initialization to create a Foo object called foo4 in automatic storage.

   /* 5 */ Bar* bar1 = new Bar ( *new Foo() );

Uses Bar's conversion constructor to create an object of type Bar in dynamic storage. bar1 is a pointer to it.

   /* 6 */ Bar* bar2 = new Bar ( *new Foo );

Same as before.

   /* 7 */ Bar* bar3 = new Bar ( Foo foo5 );

This is just invalid syntax. You can't declare a variable there.

   /* 8 */ Bar* bar3 = new Bar ( Foo::Foo() );

Would work and work by the same principle to 5 and 6 if bar3 wasn't declared on in 7.

5 & 6 contain memory leaks.

Syntax like new Bar ( Foo::Foo() ); is not usual. It's usually new Bar ( (Foo()) ); - extra parenthesis account for most-vexing parse. (corrected)

Vagrant shared and synced folders

shared folders VS synced folders

Basically shared folders are renamed to synced folder from v1 to v2 (docs), under the bonnet it is still using vboxsf between host and guest (there is known performance issues if there are large numbers of files/directories).

Vagrantfile directory mounted as /vagrant in guest

Vagrant is mounting the current working directory (where Vagrantfile resides) as /vagrant in the guest, this is the default behaviour.

See docs

NOTE: By default, Vagrant will share your project directory (the directory with the Vagrantfile) to /vagrant.

You can disable this behaviour by adding cfg.vm.synced_folder ".", "/vagrant", disabled: true in your Vagrantfile.

Why synced folder is not working

Based on the output /tmp on host was NOT mounted during up time.

Use VAGRANT_INFO=debug vagrant up or VAGRANT_INFO=debug vagrant reload to start the VM for more output regarding why the synced folder is not mounted. Could be a permission issue (mode bits of /tmp on host should be drwxrwxrwt).

I did a test quick test using the following and it worked (I used opscode bento raring vagrant base box)

config.vm.synced_folder "/tmp", "/tmp/src"

output

$ vagrant reload

Within the VM, you can see the mount info /tmp/src on /tmp/src type vboxsf (uid=900,gid=900,rw).

Alternative to file_get_contents?

If the file is local as your comment about SITE_PATH suggest, it's pretty simple just execute the script and cache the result in a variable using the output control functions :

function print_xml_data_file()
{
    include(XML_DATA_FILE_DIRECTORY . 'cms/data.php');
}

function get_xml_data()
{
    ob_start();
    print_xml_data_file();
    $xml_file = ob_get_contents();
    ob_end_clean();
    return $xml_file;
}

If it's remote as lot of others said curl is the way to go. If it isn't present try socket_create or fsockopen. If nothing work... change your hosting provider.

check if "it's a number" function in Oracle

Saish's answer using REGEXP_LIKE is the right idea but does not support floating numbers. This one will ...

Return values that are numeric

SELECT  foo

WHERE   REGEXP_LIKE (foo,'^-?\d+(\.\d+)?$');

Return values not numeric

SELECT  foo
FROM    bar
WHERE   NOT REGEXP_LIKE (foo,'^-?\d+(\.\d+)?$');

You can test your regular expressions themselves till your heart is content at http://regexpal.com/ (but make sure you select the checkbox match at line breaks for this one).

javascript set cookie with expire time

I'd like to second Polin's answer and just add one thing in case you are still stuck. This code certainly does work to set a specific cookie expiration time. One issue you may be having is that if you are using Chrome and accessing your page via "http://localhost..." or "file://", Chrome will not store cookies. The easy fix for this is to use a simple http server (like node's http-server if you haven't already) and navigate to your page explicitly as "http://127.0.0.1" in which case Chrome WILL store cookies for local development. This had me hung up for a bit as, if you don't do this, your expires key will simply have the value of "session" when you investigate it in the console or in Dev Tools.

How can I list all commits that changed a specific file?

It should be as simple as git log <somepath>; check the manpage (git-log(1)).

Personally I like to use git log --stat <path> so I can see the impact of each commit on the file.

Actually without PDB files and symbolic information they have it would be impossible to create a successful crash report (memory dump files) and Microsoft would not have the complete picture what caused the problem.

And so having PDB improves crash reporting.

C++: what regex library should I use?

Boost.Regex is very good and is slated to become part of the C++0x standard (it's already in TR1).

Personally, I find Boost.Xpressive much nicer to work with. It is a header-only library and it has some nice features such as static regexes (regexes compiled at compile time).

Update: If you're using a C++11 compliant compiler (gcc 4.8 is NOT!), use std::regex unless you have good reason to use something else.

How can I send and receive WebSocket messages on the server side?

pimvdb's answer implemented in python:

def DecodedCharArrayFromByteStreamIn(stringStreamIn):
    #turn string values into opererable numeric byte values
    byteArray = [ord(character) for character in stringStreamIn]
    datalength = byteArray[1] & 127
    indexFirstMask = 2
    if datalength == 126:
        indexFirstMask = 4
    elif datalength == 127:
        indexFirstMask = 10
    masks = [m for m in byteArray[indexFirstMask : indexFirstMask+4]]
    indexFirstDataByte = indexFirstMask + 4
    decodedChars = []
    i = indexFirstDataByte
    j = 0
    while i < len(byteArray):
        decodedChars.append( chr(byteArray[i] ^ masks[j % 4]) )
        i += 1
        j += 1
    return decodedChars

An Example of usage:

print DecodedCharArrayFromByteStreamIn(fromclient)
# ['H', 'e', 'l', 'l', 'o', ' ', 'W', 'o', 'r', 'l', 'd', '!']

How using try catch for exception handling is best practice

The second approach is a good one.

If you don't want to show the error and confuse the user of application by showing runtime exception(i.e. error) which is not related to them, then just log error and the technical team can look for the issue and resolve it.

try
{
  //do some work
}
catch(Exception exception)
{
   WriteException2LogFile(exception);//it will write the or log the error in a text file
}

I recommend that you go for the second approach for your whole application.

jQuery: print_r() display equivalent?

You could use very easily reflection to list all properties, methods and values.

For Gecko based browsers you can use the .toSource() method:

var data = new Object();
data["firstname"] = "John";
data["lastname"] = "Smith";
data["age"] = 21;

alert(data.toSource()); //Will return "({firstname:"John", lastname:"Smith", age:21})"

But since you use Firebug, why not just use console.log?

Which HTML Parser is the best?

Self plug: I have just released a new Java HTML parser: jsoup. I mention it here because I think it will do what you are after.

Its party trick is a CSS selector syntax to find elements, e.g.:

String html = "<html><head><title>First parse</title></head>"
  + "<body><p>Parsed HTML into a doc.</p></body></html>";
Document doc = Jsoup.parse(html);
Elements links = doc.select("a");
Element head = doc.select("head").first();

See the Selector javadoc for more info.

This is a new project, so any ideas for improvement are very welcome!

How to get ELMAH to work with ASP.NET MVC [HandleError] attribute?

There is now an ELMAH.MVC package in NuGet that includes an improved solution by Atif and also a controller that handles the elmah interface within MVC routing (no need to use that axd anymore)
The problem with that solution (and with all the ones here) is that one way or another the elmah error handler is actually handling the error, ignoring what you might want to set up as a customError tag or through ErrorHandler or your own error handler
The best solution IMHO is to create a filter that will act at the end of all the other filters and log the events that have been handled already. The elmah module should take care of loging the other errors that are unhandled by the application. This will also allow you to use the health monitor and all the other modules that can be added to asp.net to look at error events

I wrote this looking with reflector at the ErrorHandler inside elmah.mvc

public class ElmahMVCErrorFilter : IExceptionFilter
{
   private static ErrorFilterConfiguration _config;

   public void OnException(ExceptionContext context)
   {
       if (context.ExceptionHandled) //The unhandled ones will be picked by the elmah module
       {
           var e = context.Exception;
           var context2 = context.HttpContext.ApplicationInstance.Context;
           //TODO: Add additional variables to context.HttpContext.Request.ServerVariables for both handled and unhandled exceptions
           if ((context2 == null) || (!_RaiseErrorSignal(e, context2) && !_IsFiltered(e, context2)))
           {
            _LogException(e, context2);
           }
       }
   }

   private static bool _IsFiltered(System.Exception e, System.Web.HttpContext context)
   {
       if (_config == null)
       {
           _config = (context.GetSection("elmah/errorFilter") as ErrorFilterConfiguration) ?? new ErrorFilterConfiguration();
       }
       var context2 = new ErrorFilterModule.AssertionHelperContext((System.Exception)e, context);
       return _config.Assertion.Test(context2);
   }

   private static void _LogException(System.Exception e, System.Web.HttpContext context)
   {
       ErrorLog.GetDefault((System.Web.HttpContext)context).Log(new Elmah.Error((System.Exception)e, (System.Web.HttpContext)context));
   }

   private static bool _RaiseErrorSignal(System.Exception e, System.Web.HttpContext context)
   {
       var signal = ErrorSignal.FromContext((System.Web.HttpContext)context);
       if (signal == null)
       {
           return false;
       }
       signal.Raise((System.Exception)e, (System.Web.HttpContext)context);
       return true;
   }
}

Now, in your filter config you want to do something like this:

    public static void RegisterGlobalFilters(GlobalFilterCollection filters)
    {
        //These filters should go at the end of the pipeline, add all error handlers before
        filters.Add(new ElmahMVCErrorFilter());
    }

Notice that I left a comment there to remind people that if they want to add a global filter that will actually handle the exception it should go BEFORE this last filter, otherwise you run into the case where the unhandled exception will be ignored by the ElmahMVCErrorFilter because it hasn't been handled and it should be loged by the Elmah module but then the next filter marks the exception as handled and the module ignores it, resulting on the exception never making it into elmah.

Now, make sure the appsettings for elmah in your webconfig look something like this:

<add key="elmah.mvc.disableHandler" value="false" /> <!-- This handles elmah controller pages, if disabled elmah pages will not work -->
<add key="elmah.mvc.disableHandleErrorFilter" value="true" /> <!-- This uses the default filter for elmah, set to disabled to use our own -->
<add key="elmah.mvc.requiresAuthentication" value="false" /> <!-- Manages authentication for elmah pages -->
<add key="elmah.mvc.allowedRoles" value="*" /> <!-- Manages authentication for elmah pages -->
<add key="elmah.mvc.route" value="errortracking" /> <!-- Base route for elmah pages -->

The important one here is "elmah.mvc.disableHandleErrorFilter", if this is false it will use the handler inside elmah.mvc that will actually handle the exception by using the default HandleErrorHandler that will ignore your customError settings

This setup allows you to set your own ErrorHandler tags in classes and views, while still loging those errors through the ElmahMVCErrorFilter, adding a customError configuration to your web.config through the elmah module, even writing your own Error Handlers. The only thing you need to do is remember to not add any filters that will actually handle the error before the elmah filter we've written. And I forgot to mention: no duplicates in elmah.

What exactly is LLVM?

The LLVM Compiler Infrastructure is particularly useful for performing optimizations and transformations on code. It also consists of a number of tools serving distinct usages. llvm-prof is a profiling tool that allows you to do profiling of execution in order to identify program hotspots. Opt is an optimization tool that offers various optimization passes (dead code elimination for instance).

Importantly LLVM provides you with the libraries, to write your own Passes. For instance if you require to add a range check on certain arguments that are passed into certain functions of a Program, writing a simple LLVM Pass would suffice.

For more information on writing your own Pass, check this http://llvm.org/docs/WritingAnLLVMPass.html

Align vertically using CSS 3

a couple ways:

1. Absolute positioning-- you need to have a declared height to make this work:

<div>
   <div class='center'>Hey</div>
</div>

div {height: 100%; width: 100%; position: relative}
div.center {
     width: 100px;
     height: 100px;
     top: 50%;
     margin-top: -50px;
}

*2. Use display: table http://jsfiddle.net/B7CpL/2/ *

<div>
     <img src="/img.png" />
     <div class="text">text centered with image</div>
</div>

div {
     display: table;
     vertical-align: middle
}

div img,
div.text {
     display: table-cell;
     vertical-align: middle
}

Another easy way:you can use a web browser control for getting href from tag a,like this:(see my example)

 public Form1()

            InitializeComponent();
            webBrowser1.DocumentCompleted += new WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventHandler(webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted);
        }

        private void Form1_Load(object sender, EventArgs e)
        {
            webBrowser1.DocumentText = "<a href=\"www.aaa.xx/xx.zz?id=xxxx&name=xxxx\" ....></a><a href=\"http://www.aaa.xx/xx.zz?id=xxxx&name=xxxx\" ....></a><a href=\"https://www.aaa.xx/xx.zz?id=xxxx&name=xxxx\" ....></a><a href=\"www.aaa.xx/xx.zz/xxx\" ....></a>";
        }

        void webBrowser1_DocumentCompleted(object sender, WebBrowserDocumentCompletedEventArgs e)
        {
            List<string> href = new List<string>();
            foreach (HtmlElement el in webBrowser1.Document.GetElementsByTagName("a"))
            {
                href.Add(el.GetAttribute("href"));
            }

XML Schema How to Restrict Attribute by Enumeration

New answer to old question

None of the existing answers to this old question address the real problem.

The real problem was that xs:complexType cannot directly have a xs:extension as a child in XSD. The fix is to use xs:simpleContent first. Details follow...

Your XML,

<price currency="euros">20000.00</price>

will be valid against either of the following corrected XSDs:

Locally defined attribute type

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">

  <xs:element name="price">
    <xs:complexType>
      <xs:simpleContent>
        <xs:extension base="xs:decimal">
          <xs:attribute name="currency">
            <xs:simpleType>
              <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
                <xs:enumeration value="pounds" />
                <xs:enumeration value="euros" />
                <xs:enumeration value="dollars" />
              </xs:restriction>
            </xs:simpleType>
          </xs:attribute>
        </xs:extension>
      </xs:simpleContent>
    </xs:complexType>
  </xs:element>
</xs:schema>

Globally defined attribute type

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">

  <xs:simpleType name="currencyType">
    <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
      <xs:enumeration value="pounds" />
      <xs:enumeration value="euros" />
      <xs:enumeration value="dollars" />
    </xs:restriction>
  </xs:simpleType>

  <xs:element name="price">
    <xs:complexType>
      <xs:simpleContent>
        <xs:extension base="xs:decimal">
          <xs:attribute name="currency" type="currencyType"/>
        </xs:extension>
      </xs:simpleContent>
    </xs:complexType>
  </xs:element>
</xs:schema>

Notes

  • As commented by @Paul, these do change the content type of price from xs:string to xs:decimal, but this is not strictly necessary and was not the real problem.
  • As answered by @user998692, you could separate out the definition of currency, and you could change to xs:decimal, but this too was not the real problem.

The real problem was that xs:complexType cannot directly have a xs:extension as a child in XSD; xs:simpleContent is needed first.

A related matter (that wasn't asked but may have confused other answers):

How could price be restricted given that it has an attribute?

In this case, a separate, global definition of priceType would be needed; it is not possible to do this with only local type definitions.

How to restrict element content when element has attribute

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<xs:schema xmlns:xs="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema">

  <xs:simpleType name="priceType">
    <xs:restriction base="xs:decimal">
      <xs:minInclusive value="0.00"/>
      <xs:maxInclusive value="99999.99"/>
    </xs:restriction>
  </xs:simpleType>

  <xs:element name="price">
    <xs:complexType>
      <xs:simpleContent>
        <xs:extension base="priceType">
          <xs:attribute name="currency">
            <xs:simpleType>
              <xs:restriction base="xs:string">
                <xs:enumeration value="pounds" />
                <xs:enumeration value="euros" />
                <xs:enumeration value="dollars" />
              </xs:restriction>
            </xs:simpleType>
          </xs:attribute>
        </xs:extension>
      </xs:simpleContent>
    </xs:complexType>
  </xs:element>
</xs:schema>

Simple way to copy or clone a DataRow?

Note: cuongle's helfpul answer has all the ingredients, but the solution can be streamlined (no need for .ItemArray) and can be reframed to better match the question as asked.

To create an (isolated) clone of a given System.Data.DataRow instance, you can do the following:

// Assume that variable `table` contains the source data table.

// Create an auxiliary, empty, column-structure-only clone of the source data table.
var tableAux = table.Clone();
// Note: .Copy(), by contrast, would clone the data rows also.

// Select the data row to clone, e.g. the 2nd one:
var row = table.Rows[1];

// Import the data row of interest into the aux. table.
// This creates a *shallow clone* of it.
// Note: If you'll be *reusing* the aux. table for single-row cloning later, call
//       tableAux.Clear() first.
tableAux.ImportRow(row);

// Extract the cloned row from the aux. table:
var rowClone = tableAux.Rows[0];

Note: Shallow cloning is performed, which works as-is with column values that are value type instances, but more work would be needed to also create independent copies of column values containing reference type instances (and creating such independent copies isn't always possible).

Java regular expression OR operator

You can just use the pipe on its own:

"string1|string2"

for example:

String s = "string1, string2, string3";
System.out.println(s.replaceAll("string1|string2", "blah"));

Output:

blah, blah, string3

The main reason to use parentheses is to limit the scope of the alternatives:

String s = "string1, string2, string3";
System.out.println(s.replaceAll("string(1|2)", "blah"));

has the same output. but if you just do this:

String s = "string1, string2, string3";
System.out.println(s.replaceAll("string1|2", "blah"));

you get:

blah, stringblah, string3

because you've said "string1" or "2".

If you don't want to capture that part of the expression use ?::

String s = "string1, string2, string3";
System.out.println(s.replaceAll("string(?:1|2)", "blah"));

Error: invalid operands of types ‘const char [35]’ and ‘const char [2]’ to binary ‘operator+’

Consider this:

std::string str = "Hello " + "world"; // bad!

Both the rhs and the lhs for operator + are char*s. There is no definition of operator + that takes two char*s (in fact, the language doesn't permit you to write one). As a result, on my compiler this produces a "cannot add two pointers" error (yours apparently phrases things in terms of arrays, but it's the same problem).

Now consider this:

std::string str = "Hello " + std::string("world"); // ok

There is a definition of operator + that takes a const char* as the lhs and a std::string as the rhs, so now everyone is happy.

You can extend this to as long a concatenation chain as you like. It can get messy, though. For example:

std::string str = "Hello " + "there " + std::string("world"); // no good!

This doesn't work because you are trying to + two char*s before the lhs has been converted to std::string. But this is fine:

std::string str = std::string("Hello ") + "there " + "world"; // ok

Because once you've converted to std::string, you can + as many additional char*s as you want.

If that's still confusing, it may help to add some brackets to highlight the associativity rules and then replace the variable names with their types:

((std::string("Hello ") + "there ") + "world");
((string + char*) + char*)

The first step is to call string operator+(string, char*), which is defined in the standard library. Replacing those two operands with their result gives:

((string) + char*)

Which is exactly what we just did, and which is still legal. But try the same thing with:

((char* + char*) + string)

And you're stuck, because the first operation tries to add two char*s.

Moral of the story: If you want to be sure a concatenation chain will work, just make sure one of the first two arguments is explicitly of type std::string.

How to end C++ code

There are several ways, but first you need to understand why object cleanup is important, and hence the reason std::exit is marginalized among C++ programmers.

RAII and Stack Unwinding

C++ makes use of a idiom called RAII, which in simple terms means objects should perform initialization in the constructor and cleanup in the destructor. For instance the std::ofstream class [may] open the file during the constructor, then the user performs output operations on it, and finally at the end of its life cycle, usually determined by its scope, the destructor is called that essentially closes the file and flushes any written content into the disk.

What happens if you don't get to the destructor to flush and close the file? Who knows! But possibly it won't write all the data it was supposed to write into the file.

For instance consider this code

#include <fstream>
#include <exception>
#include <memory>

void inner_mad()
{
    throw std::exception();
}

void mad()
{
    auto ptr = std::make_unique<int>();
    inner_mad();
}

int main()
{
    std::ofstream os("file.txt");
    os << "Content!!!";

    int possibility = /* either 1, 2, 3 or 4 */;

    if(possibility == 1)
        return 0;
    else if(possibility == 2)
        throw std::exception();
    else if(possibility == 3)
        mad();
    else if(possibility == 4)
        exit(0);
}

What happens in each possibility is:

  • Possibility 1: Return essentially leaves the current function scope, so it knows about the end of the life cycle of os thus calling its destructor and doing proper cleanup by closing and flushing the file to disk.
  • Possibility 2: Throwing a exception also takes care of the life cycle of the objects in the current scope, thus doing proper cleanup...
  • Possibility 3: Here stack unwinding enters in action! Even though the exception is thrown at inner_mad, the unwinder will go though the stack of mad and main to perform proper cleanup, all the objects are going to be destructed properly, including ptr and os.
  • Possibility 4: Well, here? exit is a C function and it's not aware nor compatible with the C++ idioms. It does not perform cleanup on your objects, including os in the very same scope. So your file won't be closed properly and for this reason the content might never get written into it!
  • Other Possibilities: It'll just leave main scope, by performing a implicit return 0 and thus having the same effect as possibility 1, i.e. proper cleanup.

But don't be so certain about what I just told you (mainly possibilities 2 and 3); continue reading and we'll find out how to perform a proper exception based cleanup.

Possible Ways To End

Return from main!

You should do this whenever possible; always prefer to return from your program by returning a proper exit status from main.

The caller of your program, and possibly the operating system, might want to know whether what your program was supposed to do was done successfully or not. For this same reason you should return either zero or EXIT_SUCCESS to signal that the program successfully terminated and EXIT_FAILURE to signal the program terminated unsuccessfully, any other form of return value is implementation-defined (§18.5/8).

However you may be very deep in the call stack, and returning all of it may be painful...

[Do not] throw a exception

Throwing a exception will perform proper object cleanup using stack unwinding, by calling the destructor of every object in any previous scope.

But here's the catch! It's implementation-defined whether stack unwinding is performed when a thrown exception is not handled (by the catch(...) clause) or even if you have a noexcept function in the middle of the call stack. This is stated in §15.5.1 [except.terminate]:

  1. In some situations exception handling must be abandoned for less subtle error handling techniques. [Note: These situations are:

    [...]

    when the exception handling mechanism cannot find a handler for a thrown exception (15.3), or when the search for a handler (15.3) encounters the outermost block of a function with a noexcept-specification that does not allow the exception (15.4), or [...]

    [...]

  2. In such cases, std::terminate() is called (18.8.3). In the situation where no matching handler is found, it is implementation-defined whether or not the stack is unwound before std::terminate() is called [...]

So we have to catch it!

Do throw a exception and catch it at main!

Since uncaught exceptions may not perform stack unwinding (and consequently won't perform proper cleanup), we should catch the exception in main and then return a exit status (EXIT_SUCCESS or EXIT_FAILURE).

So a possibly good setup would be:

int main()
{
    /* ... */
    try
    {
        // Insert code that will return by throwing a exception.
    }
    catch(const std::exception&) // Consider using a custom exception type for intentional
    {                             // throws. A good idea might be a `return_exception`.
        return EXIT_FAILURE;
    }
    /* ... */
}

[Do not] std::exit

This does not perform any sort of stack unwinding, and no alive object on the stack will call its respective destructor to perform cleanup.

This is enforced in §3.6.1/4 [basic.start.init]:

Terminating the program without leaving the current block (e.g., by calling the function std::exit(int) (18.5)) does not destroy any objects with automatic storage duration (12.4). If std::exit is called to end a program during the destruction of an object with static or thread storage duration, the program has undefined behavior.

Think about it now, why would you do such a thing? How many objects have you painfully damaged?

Other [as bad] alternatives

There are other ways to terminate a program (other than crashing), but they aren't recommended. Just for the sake of clarification they are going to be presented here. Notice how normal program termination does not mean stack unwinding but an okay state for the operating system.

  • std::_Exit causes a normal program termination, and that's it.
  • std::quick_exit causes a normal program termination and calls std::at_quick_exit handlers, no other cleanup is performed.
  • std::exit causes a normal program termination and then calls std::atexit handlers. Other sorts of cleanups are performed such as calling static objects destructors.
  • std::abort causes an abnormal program termination, no cleanup is performed. This should be called if the program terminated in a really, really unexpected way. It'll do nothing but signal the OS about the abnormal termination. Some systems perform a core dump in this case.
  • std::terminate calls the std::terminate_handler which calls std::abort by default.

Checking if a variable is not nil and not zero in ruby

Yes, we do have a clean way in ruby.

discount.to_f.zero?

This check handles good amount of cases i.e. discount may be nil, discount may be int 0, discount may be float 0.0, discount may be string "0.0", "0".

Update statement with inner join on Oracle

Just as a matter of completeness, and because we're talking Oracle, this could do it as well:

declare
begin
  for sel in (
    select table2.code, table2.desc
    from table1
    join table2 on table1.value = table2.desc
    where table1.updatetype = 'blah'
  ) loop
    update table1
    set table1.value = sel.code
    where table1.updatetype = 'blah' and table1.value = sel.desc;
  end loop;
end;

jQuery callback on image load (even when the image is cached)

I can give you a little tip if you want do like this:

<div style="position:relative;width:100px;height:100px">
     <img src="loading.jpg" style='position:absolute;width:100px;height:100px;z-index:0'/>
     <img onLoad="$(this).fadeIn('normal').siblings('img').fadeOut('normal')" src="picture.jpg" style="display:none;position:absolute;width:100px;height:100px;z-index:1"/>
</div>

If you do that when the browser caches pictures, it's no problem always img shown but loading img under real picture.

How to use a variable inside a regular expression?

I find it very convenient to build a regular expression pattern by stringing together multiple smaller patterns.

import re

string = "begin:id1:tag:middl:id2:tag:id3:end"
re_str1 = r'(?<=(\S{5})):'
re_str2 = r'(id\d+):(?=tag:)'
re_pattern = re.compile(re_str1 + re_str2)
match = re_pattern.findall(string)
print(match)

Output:

[('begin', 'id1'), ('middl', 'id2')]

Update GCC on OSX

You can have multiple versions of GCC on your box, to select the one you want to use call it with full path, e.g. instead of g++ use full path /usr/bin/g++ on command line (depends where your gcc lives).

For compiling projects it depends what system do you use, I'm not sure about Xcode (I'm happy with default atm) but when you use Makefiles you can set GXX=/usr/bin/g++ and so on.

EDIT

There's now a xcrun script that can be queried to select appropriate version of build tools on mac. Apart from man xcrun I've googled this explanation about xcode and command line tools which pretty much summarizes how to use it.

As i am need of the older version 6.3.0 , i just installed the 6.3.0 version again in my system. node version downgraded automatically.

So, to downgrade the node version , Just install the older version of node js . It will get downgraded automatically from the higher version.

I tried in osx . It works like a charm .

EF 5 Enable-Migrations : No context type was found in the assembly

If anyone is still facing this problem. I solved it by using the following command:

Enable-Migrations -ProjectName <YOUR_PROJECT_NAME> -ContextTypeName <YOUR_CONTEXT_NAME>

Don't forget to use the full path to your context name.

Checkout one file from Subversion

Since none of the other answers worked for me I did it using this hack:

$ cd /yourfolder
svn co https://path-to-folder-which-has-your-files/ --depth files

This will create a new local folder which has only the files from the remote path. Then you can do a symbolic link to the files you want to have here.

how does int main() and void main() work

If you really want to understand ANSI C 89, I need to correct you in one thing; In ANSI C 89 the difference between the following functions:

int main()
int main(void)
int main(int argc, char* argv[])

is:

int main()

  • a function that expects unknown number of arguments of unknown types. Returns an integer representing the application software status.

int main(void)

  • a function that expects no arguments. Returns an integer representing the application software status.

int main(int argc, char * argv[])

  • a function that expects argc number of arguments and argv[] arguments. Returns an integer representing the application software status.

About when using each of the functions

int main(void)

  • you need to use this function when your program needs no initial parameters to run/ load (parameters received from the OS - out of the program it self).

int main(int argc, char * argv[])

  • you need to use this function when your program needs initial parameters to load (parameters received from the OS - out of the program it self).

About void main()

In ANSI C 89, when using void main and compiling the project AS -ansi -pedantic (in Ubuntu, e.g) you will receive a warning indicating that your main function is of type void and not of type int, but you will be able to run the project. Most C developers tend to use int main() on all of its variants, though void main() will also compile.

Change column type in pandas

How about this?

a = [['a', '1.2', '4.2'], ['b', '70', '0.03'], ['x', '5', '0']]
df = pd.DataFrame(a, columns=['one', 'two', 'three'])
df
Out[16]:
  one  two three
0   a  1.2   4.2
1   b   70  0.03
2   x    5     0

df.dtypes
Out[17]:
one      object
two      object
three    object

df[['two', 'three']] = df[['two', 'three']].astype(float)

df.dtypes
Out[19]:
one       object
two      float64
three    float64

When to use %r instead of %s in Python?

The %s specifier converts the object using str(), and %r converts it using repr().

For some objects such as integers, they yield the same result, but repr() is special in that (for types where this is possible) it conventionally returns a result that is valid Python syntax, which could be used to unambiguously recreate the object it represents.

Here's an example, using a date:

>>> import datetime
>>> d = datetime.date.today()
>>> str(d)
'2011-05-14'
>>> repr(d)
'datetime.date(2011, 5, 14)'

Types for which repr() doesn't produce Python syntax include those that point to external resources such as a file, which you can't guarantee to recreate in a different context.

Java: splitting the filename into a base and extension

I know others have mentioned String.split, but here is a variant that only yields two tokens (the base and the extension):

String[] tokens = fileName.split("\\.(?=[^\\.]+$)");

For example:

"test.cool.awesome.txt".split("\\.(?=[^\\.]+$)");

Yields:

["test.cool.awesome", "txt"]

The regular expression tells Java to split on any period that is followed by any number of non-periods, followed by the end of input. There is only one period that matches this definition (namely, the last period).

Technically Regexically speaking, this technique is called zero-width positive lookahead.

BTW, if you want to split a path and get the full filename including but not limited to the dot extension, using a path with forward slashes,

    String[] tokens = dir.split(".+?/(?=[^/]+$)");

For example:

    String dir = "/foo/bar/bam/boozled";
    String[] tokens = dir.split(".+?/(?=[^/]+$)");
    // [ "/foo/bar/bam/" "boozled" ]

What's your most controversial programming opinion?

We do a lot of development here using a Model-View-Controller framework we built. I'm often telling my developers that we need to violate the rules of the MVC design pattern to make the site run faster. This is a hard sell for developers, who are usually unwilling to sacrifice well-designed code for anything. But performance is our top priority in building web applications, so sometimes we have to make concessions in the framework.

For example, the view layer should never talk directly to the database, right? But if you are generating large reports, the app will use a lot of memory to pass that data up through the model and controller layers. If you have a database that supports cursors, it can make the app a lot faster to hit the database directly from the view layer.

Performance trumps development standards, that's my controversial view.

Reload a DIV without reloading the whole page

Your code works, but the fadeIn doesn't, because it's already visible. I think the effect you want to achieve is: fadeOutloadfadeIn:

var auto_refresh = setInterval(function () {
    $('.View').fadeOut('slow', function() {
        $(this).load('/echo/json/', function() {
            $(this).fadeIn('slow');
        });
    });
}, 15000); // refresh every 15000 milliseconds

Try it here: http://jsfiddle.net/kelunik/3qfNn/1/

Additional notice: As Khanh TO mentioned, you may need to get rid of the browser's internal cache. You can do so using $.ajax and $.ajaxSetup ({ cache: false }); or the random-hack, he mentioned.

How to create a static library with g++?

Can someone please tell me how to create a static library from a .cpp and a .hpp file? Do I need to create the .o and the the .a?

Yes.

Create the .o (as per normal):

g++ -c header.cpp

Create the archive:

ar rvs header.a header.o

Test:

g++ test.cpp header.a -o executable_name

Note that it seems a bit pointless to make an archive with just one module in it. You could just as easily have written:

g++ test.cpp header.cpp -o executable_name

Still, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt that your actual use case is a bit more complex, with more modules.

Hope this helps!

How does the class_weight parameter in scikit-learn work?

The first answer is good for understanding how it works. But I wanted to understand how I should be using it in practice.

SUMMARY

  • for moderately imbalanced data WITHOUT noise, there is not much of a difference in applying class weights
  • for moderately imbalanced data WITH noise and strongly imbalanced, it is better to apply class weights
  • param class_weight="balanced" works decent in the absence of you wanting to optimize manually
  • with class_weight="balanced" you capture more true events (higher TRUE recall) but also you are more likely to get false alerts (lower TRUE precision)
    • as a result, the total % TRUE might be higher than actual because of all the false positives
    • AUC might misguide you here if the false alarms are an issue
  • no need to change decision threshold to the imbalance %, even for strong imbalance, ok to keep 0.5 (or somewhere around that depending on what you need)

NB

The result might differ when using RF or GBM. sklearn does not have class_weight="balanced" for GBM but lightgbm has LGBMClassifier(is_unbalance=False)

PHP isset() with multiple parameters

The parameters of isset() should be separated by a comma sign (,) and not a dot sign (.). Your current code concatenates the variables into a single parameter, instead of passing them as separate parameters.

So the original code evaluates the variables as a unified string value:

isset($_POST['search_term'] . $_POST['postcode']) // Incorrect

While the correct form evaluates them separately as variables:

isset($_POST['search_term'], $_POST['postcode']) // Correct

Show Curl POST Request Headers? Is there a way to do this?

You can save all headers sent by curl to a file using :

$f = fopen('request.txt', 'w');
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_VERBOSE,true);
curl_setopt($ch,CURLOPT_STDERR ,$f);

Performance of FOR vs FOREACH in PHP

My personal opinion is to use what makes sense in the context. Personally I almost never use for for array traversal. I use it for other types of iteration, but foreach is just too easy... The time difference is going to be minimal in most cases.

The big thing to watch for is:

for ($i = 0; $i < count($array); $i++) {

That's an expensive loop, since it calls count on every single iteration. So long as you're not doing that, I don't think it really matters...

As for the reference making a difference, PHP uses copy-on-write, so if you don't write to the array, there will be relatively little overhead while looping. However, if you start modifying the array within the array, that's where you'll start seeing differences between them (since one will need to copy the entire array, and the reference can just modify inline)...

As for the iterators, foreach is equivalent to:

$it->rewind();
while ($it->valid()) {
    $key = $it->key();     // If using the $key => $value syntax
    $value = $it->current();

    // Contents of loop in here

    $it->next();
}

As far as there being faster ways to iterate, it really depends on the problem. But I really need to ask, why? I understand wanting to make things more efficient, but I think you're wasting your time for a micro-optimization. Remember, Premature Optimization Is The Root Of All Evil...

Edit: Based upon the comment, I decided to do a quick benchmark run...

$a = array();
for ($i = 0; $i < 10000; $i++) {
    $a[] = $i;
}

$start = microtime(true);
foreach ($a as $k => $v) {
    $a[$k] = $v + 1;
}
echo "Completed in ", microtime(true) - $start, " Seconds\n";

$start = microtime(true);
foreach ($a as $k => &$v) {
    $v = $v + 1;
}
echo "Completed in ", microtime(true) - $start, " Seconds\n";

$start = microtime(true);
foreach ($a as $k => $v) {}
echo "Completed in ", microtime(true) - $start, " Seconds\n";

$start = microtime(true);
foreach ($a as $k => &$v) {}
echo "Completed in ", microtime(true) - $start, " Seconds\n";

And the results:

Completed in 0.0073502063751221 Seconds
Completed in 0.0019769668579102 Seconds
Completed in 0.0011849403381348 Seconds
Completed in 0.00111985206604 Seconds

So if you're modifying the array in the loop, it's several times faster to use references...

And the overhead for just the reference is actually less than copying the array (this is on 5.3.2)... So it appears (on 5.3.2 at least) as if references are significantly faster...

Is there a way to get a list of column names in sqlite?

You can get a list of column names by running:

SELECT name FROM PRAGMA_TABLE_INFO('your_table');
name
tbl_name
rootpage
sql

You can check if a certain column exists by running:

SELECT 1 FROM PRAGMA_TABLE_INFO('your_table') WHERE name='sql';
1

Are there dictionaries in php?

Normal array can serve as a dictionary data structure. In general it has multipurpose usage: array, list (vector), hash table, dictionary, collection, stack, queue etc.

$names = [
    'bob' => 27,
    'billy' => 43,
    'sam' => 76,
];

$names['bob'];

And because of wide design it gains no full benefits of specific data structure. You can implement your own dictionary by extending an ArrayObject or you can use SplObjectStorage class which is map (dictionary) implementation allowing objects to be assigned as keys.
