Programs & Examples On #Xml attribute

how to get the attribute value of an xml node using java

try something like this :

    DocumentBuilder builder = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance().newDocumentBuilder();
    Document dDoc = builder.parse("d://utf8test.xml");

    XPath xPath = XPathFactory.newInstance().newXPath();
    NodeList nodes = (NodeList) xPath.evaluate("//xml/ep/source/@type", dDoc, XPathConstants.NODESET);
    for (int i = 0; i < nodes.getLength(); i++) {
        Node node = nodes.item(i);
        System.out.println(node.getTextContent());
    }

please note the changes :

  • we ask for a nodeset (XPathConstants.NODESET) and not only for a single node.
  • the xpath is now //xml/ep/source/@type and not //xml/source/@type/text()

PS: can you add the tag java to your question ? thanks.

Local variable referenced before assignment?

In order for you to modify test1 while inside a function you will need to do define test1 as a global variable, for example:

test1 = 0
def testFunc():
    global test1
    test1 += 1
testFunc()

However, if you only need to read the global variable you can print it without using the keyword global, like so:

test1 = 0
def testFunc():
     print test1
testFunc()

But whenever you need to modify a global variable you must use the keyword global.

The best node module for XML parsing

You can try xml2js. It's a simple XML to JavaScript object converter. It gets your XML converted to a JS object so that you can access its content with ease.

Here are some other options:

  1. libxmljs
  2. xml-stream
  3. xmldoc
  4. cheerio – implements a subset of core jQuery for XML (and HTML)

I have used xml2js and it has worked fine for me. The rest you might have to try out for yourself.

How to change the text on the action bar

For future developers that are using AndroidX and the navigation architectural component.

Instead of setting the toolbar title using one of the solutions above, which can be very painful if you want to set it dynamically on a back stack change, you can set a placeholder for the title of the fragment in the navigation graph like the following:

<fragment
    android:id="@+id/some_fragment"
    android:name="package.SomeFragment"
    android:label="Hello {placeholder}"
    tools:layout="@layout/fragment_some">
    <argument
        android:name="placeholder"
        app:argType="string" />
</fragment>

The placeholder value has to be provided using the FragmentDirections (via the action method).

It is then replaced in the title and show like Hello World (when placeholder = "World").

Bypass invalid SSL certificate errors when calling web services in .Net

Alternatively you can register a call back delegate which ignores the certification error:

...
ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = MyCertHandler;
...

static bool MyCertHandler(object sender, X509Certificate certificate, X509Chain chain, SslPolicyErrors error)
{
// Ignore errors
return true;
}

Getting the folder name from a path

Below code helps to get folder name only

 public ObservableCollection items = new ObservableCollection();

   try
            {
                string[] folderPaths = Directory.GetDirectories(stemp);
                items.Clear();
                foreach (string s in folderPaths)
                {
                    items.Add(new gridItems { foldername = s.Remove(0, s.LastIndexOf('\\') + 1), folderpath = s });

                }

            }
            catch (Exception a)
            {

            }
  public class gridItems
    {
        public string foldername { get; set; }
        public string folderpath { get; set; }
    }

How to make div go behind another div?

To answer the question in a general manner:

Using z-index will allow you to control this. see z-index at csstricks.

The element of higher z-index will be displayed on top of elements of lower z-index.

For instance, take the following HTML:

<div id="first">first</div>
<div id="second">second</div>

If I have the following CSS:

#first {
    position: fixed;
    z-index: 2;
}

#second {
    position: fixed;
    z-index: 1;
}

#first wil be on top of #second.

But specifically in your case:

The div element is a child of the div that you wish to put in front. This is not logically possible.

Remove duplicates in the list using linq

This is how I was able to group by with Linq. Hope it helps.

var query = collection.GroupBy(x => x.title).Select(y => y.FirstOrDefault());

LINQ Where with AND OR condition

Well, you're going to have to check for null somewhere. You could do something like this:

from item in db.vw_Dropship_OrderItems
         where (listStatus == null || listStatus.Contains(item.StatusCode))
            && (listMerchants == null || listMerchants.Contains(item.MerchantId))
         select item;

Resolve Git merge conflicts in favor of their changes during a pull

Please not that sometimes this will not work:

git checkout --ours path/to/file

or

git checkout --theirs path/to/file

I did this instead, assuming HEAD is ours and MERGE_HEAD is theirs

git checkout HEAD -- path/to/file

or:

git checkout MERGE_HEAD -- path/to/file

After we do this and we are good:

git add .

If you want to understand more, see wonderful post of torek here : git checkout --ours does not remove files from unmerged files list

SQLSTATE[HY000] [2002] Connection refused within Laravel homestead

This is a simple fix. Your mysql database has lost its connection to the server. If you are running a local server run this in your terminal:

That will reconnect your database. Then (if you are using homebrew) run:

brew services start mysql

This will automatically connect your database on login.

Update Multiple Rows in Entity Framework from a list of ids

I have created a library to batch delete or update records with a round trip on EF Core 5.

Sample code as follows:

await ctx.DeleteRangeAsync(b => b.Price > n || b.AuthorName == "zack yang");

await ctx.BatchUpdate()
.Set(b => b.Price, b => b.Price + 3)
.Set(b=>b.AuthorName,b=>b.Title.Substring(3,2)+b.AuthorName.ToUpper())
.Set(b => b.PubTime, b => DateTime.Now)
.Where(b => b.Id > n || b.AuthorName.StartsWith("Zack"))
.ExecuteAsync();

How do I get JSON data from RESTful service using Python?

You basically need to make a HTTP request to the service, and then parse the body of the response. I like to use httplib2 for it:

import httplib2 as http
import json

try:
    from urlparse import urlparse
except ImportError:
    from urllib.parse import urlparse

headers = {
    'Accept': 'application/json',
    'Content-Type': 'application/json; charset=UTF-8'
}

uri = 'http://yourservice.com'
path = '/path/to/resource/'

target = urlparse(uri+path)
method = 'GET'
body = ''

h = http.Http()

# If you need authentication some example:
if auth:
    h.add_credentials(auth.user, auth.password)

response, content = h.request(
        target.geturl(),
        method,
        body,
        headers)

# assume that content is a json reply
# parse content with the json module
data = json.loads(content)

How to quickly test some javascript code?

If you want to edit some complex javascript I suggest you use JsFiddle. Alternatively, for smaller pieces of javascript you can just run it through your browser URL bar, here's an example:

javascript:alert("hello world");

And, as it was already suggested both Firebug and Chrome developer tools have Javascript console, in which you can type in your javascript to execute. So do Internet Explorer 8+, Opera, Safari and potentially other modern browsers.

How can I disable HREF if onclick is executed?

    yes_js_login = function() {
         // Your code here
         return false;
    }

If you return false it should prevent the default action (going to the href).

Edit: Sorry that doesn't seem to work, you can do the following instead:

<a href="http://example.com/no-js-login" onclick="yes_js_login(); return false;">Link</a>

How to iterate a loop with index and element in Swift

I found this answer while looking for a way to do that with a Dictionary, and it turns out it's quite easy to adapt it, just pass a tuple for the element.

// Swift 2

var list = ["a": 1, "b": 2]

for (index, (letter, value)) in list.enumerate() {
    print("Item \(index): \(letter) \(value)")
}

How to disable text selection using jQuery?

            $("body").css("-ms-user-select","none");
            $("body").css("-o-user-select","none");
            $("body").css("user-select","none");
        });

Save child objects automatically using JPA Hibernate

I tried the above but I'm getting a database error complaining that the foreign key field in the Child table can not be NULL. Is there a way to tell JPA to automatically set this foreign key into the Child object so it can automatically save children objects?

Well, there are two things here.

First, you need to cascade the save operation (but my understanding is that you are doing this or you wouldn't get a FK constraint violation during inserts in the "child" table)

Second, you probably have a bidirectional association and I think that you're not setting "both sides of the link" correctly. You are supposed to do something like this:

Parent parent = new Parent();
...
Child c1 = new Child();
...
c1.setParent(parent);

List<Child> children = new ArrayList<Child>();
children.add(c1);
parent.setChildren(children);

session.save(parent);

A common pattern is to use link management methods:

@Entity
public class Parent {
    @Id private Long id;

    @OneToMany(mappedBy="parent")
    private List<Child> children = new ArrayList<Child>();

    ...

    protected void setChildren(List<Child> children) {
        this.children = children;
    }

    public void addToChildren(Child child) {
        child.setParent(this);
        this.children.add(child);
    }
}

And the code becomes:

Parent parent = new Parent();
...
Child c1 = new Child();
...

parent.addToChildren(c1);

session.save(parent);

python paramiko ssh

The code of @ThePracticalOne is great for showing the usage except for one thing: Somtimes the output would be incomplete.(session.recv_ready() turns true after the if session.recv_ready(): while session.recv_stderr_ready() and session.exit_status_ready() turned true before entering next loop)

so my thinking is to retrieving the data when it is ready to exit the session.

while True:
if session.exit_status_ready():
while True:
    while True:
        print "try to recv stdout..."
        ret = session.recv(nbytes)
        if len(ret) == 0:
            break
        stdout_data.append(ret)

    while True:
        print "try to recv stderr..."
        ret = session.recv_stderr(nbytes)
        if len(ret) == 0:
            break
        stderr_data.append(ret)
    break

How can you program if you're blind?

I'm a postgraduate student in Beijing,China. I major in computer science and a lot of my work is programming. I am born with low sight, I need to use magnifying tools to see fonts on screen clearly. I use microsoft's mgnify tools on windows and use compiz's magnify plug in if on linux. I usally set the tool to magnify as three times many as the original font size. For me maginify tools is ok, the main problem is the speed,I have to move mouse to keep cursors follow the text I'm looking at, microsoft's magnify provides a option of "auto follow the text edit points",that set me from continuously mouse movement when editting or coding. But it doesn't always works because of the edit software or IDE may not support that. Magnifying tools on linux are hard to use. The KMag come with KDE has a terrible refresh rate which make my eyes unconfortable, compiz's magnifying plugs which I'm using now is OK,but has no function of auto focus(focus auto following). iOS provides quite perfect solution for me with full screen magnifying, especially on ipad's 9.7 inches screen. there auto focus is not necessary because I hardly use them to code or do other edit stuff. Android provides very little accessibility functions, only like shake feedback, which is useless for me. there is no any kind of good magnifying tools on android , not to mention advance function like full screen magnify on iOS. I used to study Qt, want to build a useful magnify tools on linux, even on android. But hardly have some progress.

Get last dirname/filename in a file path argument in Bash

The following approach can be used to get any path of a pathname:

echo $(basename $some_path)
echo $(basename $(dirname $some_path))
echo $(basename $(dirname $(dirname $some_path)))

Output:

c
b

How can I use Google's Roboto font on a website?

You don't really need to do any of this.

  • Go to Google's Web Fonts page
  • search for Roboto in the search box at the top right
  • Select the variants of the font you want to use
  • click 'Select This Font' at the top and choose the weights and character sets you need.

The page will give you a <link> element to include in your pages, and a list of sample font-family rules to use in your CSS.

Using Google's fonts this way guarantees availability, and reduces bandwidth to your own server.

How can I determine browser window size on server side C#

Here how I solved it using Cookies:

First of all, inside the website main script:

var browserWindowSize = getCookie("_browserWindowSize");
var newSize = $(window).width() + "," + $(window).height();
var reloadForCookieRefresh = false;

if (browserWindowSize == undefined || browserWindowSize == null || newSize != browserWindowSize) {
    setCookie("_browserWindowSize", newSize, 30);
    reloadForCookieRefresh = true;
}

if (reloadForCookieRefresh)
    window.location.reload();

function setCookie(name, value, days) {
    var expires = "";
    if (days) {
        var date = new Date();
        date.setTime(date.getTime() + (days * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000));
        expires = "; expires=" + date.toUTCString();
    }
    document.cookie = name + "=" + (value || "") + expires + "; path=/";
}

function getCookie(name) {
    var nameEQ = name + "=";
    var ca = document.cookie.split(';');
    for (var i = 0; i < ca.length; i++) {
        var c = ca[i];
        while (c.charAt(0) == ' ') c = c.substring(1, c.length);
        if (c.indexOf(nameEQ) == 0) return c.substring(nameEQ.length, c.length);
    }
    return null;
}

And inside MVC action filter:

public class SetCurrentRequestDataFilter : ActionFilterAttribute
{
    public override void OnActionExecuting(ActionExecutingContext filterContext)
    {
        // currentRequestService is registered per web request using IoC
        var currentRequestService = iocResolver.Resolve<ICurrentRequestService>();

        if (filterContext.HttpContext.Request.Cookies.AllKeys.Contains("_browserWindowSize"))
        {
            var browserWindowSize = filterContext.HttpContext.Request.Cookies.Get("_browserWindowSize").Value.Split(',');
            currentRequestService.browserWindowWidth = int.Parse(browserWindowSize[0]);
            currentRequestService.browserWindowHeight = int.Parse(browserWindowSize[1]);
        }

    }
}

Check if list contains element that contains a string and get that element

you can use

var match=myList.Where(item=>item.Contains("Required String"));
foreach(var i in match)
{
//do something with the matched items
}

LINQ provides you with capabilities to "query" any collection of data. You can use syntax like a database query (select, where, etc) on a collection (here the collection (list) of strings).

so you are doing like "get me items from the list Where it satisfies a given condition"

inside the Where you are using a "lambda expression"

to tell briefly lambda expression is something like (input parameter => return value)

so for a parameter "item", it returns "item.Contains("required string")" . So it returns true if the item contains the string and thereby it gets selected from the list since it satisfied the condition.

On logout, clear Activity history stack, preventing "back" button from opening logged-in-only Activities

Lots of answers. May be this one will also help-

Intent intent = new Intent(activity, SignInActivity.class)
                .addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TASK)
                .addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK);
this.startActivity(intent);
this.finish();

Kotlin version-

Intent(this, SignInActivity::class.java).apply {
    addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_CLEAR_TASK)
    addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_NEW_TASK)
}.also { startActivity(it) }
finish()

Change user-agent for Selenium web-driver

There is no way in Selenium to read the request or response headers. You could do it by instructing your browser to connect through a proxy that records this kind of information.

Setting the User Agent in Firefox

The usual way to change the user agent for Firefox is to set the variable "general.useragent.override" in your Firefox profile. Note that this is independent from Selenium.

You can direct Selenium to use a profile different from the default one, like this:

from selenium import webdriver
profile = webdriver.FirefoxProfile()
profile.set_preference("general.useragent.override", "whatever you want")
driver = webdriver.Firefox(profile)

Setting the User Agent in Chrome

With Chrome, what you want to do is use the user-agent command line option. Again, this is not a Selenium thing. You can invoke Chrome at the command line with chrome --user-agent=foo to set the agent to the value foo.

With Selenium you set it like this:

from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
opts = Options()
opts.add_argument("user-agent=whatever you want")

driver = webdriver.Chrome(chrome_options=opts)

Both methods above were tested and found to work. I don't know about other browsers.

Getting the User Agent

Selenium does not have methods to query the user agent from an instance of WebDriver. Even in the case of Firefox, you cannot discover the default user agent by checking what general.useragent.override would be if not set to a custom value. (This setting does not exist before it is set to some value.)

Once the browser is started, however, you can get the user agent by executing:

agent = driver.execute_script("return navigator.userAgent")

The agent variable will contain the user agent.

Re-doing a reverted merge in Git

Let's assume you have such history

---o---o---o---M---W---x-------x-------*
              /
      ---A---B

Where A, B failed commits and W - is revert of M

So before I start fixing found problems I do cherry-pick of W commit to my branch

git cherry-pick -x W

Then I revert W commit on my branch

git revert W

After I can continue fixing.

The final history could look like:

---o---o---o---M---W---x-------x-------*
              /                       /
      ---A---B---W---W`----------C---D

When I send a PR it will clearly shows that PR is undo revert and adds some new commits.

What is the meaning of the prefix N in T-SQL statements and when should I use it?

1. Performance:

Assume your where clause is like this:

WHERE NAME='JON'

If the NAME column is of any type other than nvarchar or nchar, then you should not specify the N prefix. However, if the NAME column is of type nvarchar or nchar, then if you do not specify the N prefix, then 'JON' is treated as non-unicode. This means the data type of NAME column and string 'JON' are different and so SQL Server implicitly converts one operand’s type to the other. If the SQL Server converts the literal’s type to the column’s type then there is no issue, but if it does the other way then performance will get hurt because the column's index (if available) wont be used.

2. Character set:

If the column is of type nvarchar or nchar, then always use the prefix N while specifying the character string in the WHERE criteria/UPDATE/INSERT clause. If you do not do this and one of the characters in your string is unicode (like international characters - example - a) then it will fail or suffer data corruption.

How to disable registration new users in Laravel

In Laravel 5.5 is very simple, if you are using CRUD route system.

Go to app/http/controllers/RegisterController there is namespace: Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\RegistersUser

You need to go to the RegistersUser: Illuminate\Foundation\Auth\RegistersUser

There is the method call showRegistrationForm change this: return view('auth.login'); for this: return redirect()->route('auth.login'); and remove from you blade page route call register. It may look like that:

 <li role="presentation">
     <a class="nav-link" href="{{ route('register') }}">Register</a>
 </li>

How to convert the background to transparent?

Paint.net is a free photo-editing tool that allows for transparent backgrounds. There is a simple example on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdFpS-AvNCE. If you are still on Windows XP SP2 and that's an issue, I would first recommend doing the free service pack upgrade. But if that is not an option there are older versions of Paint.net that you could download and try.

Convert bytes to a string

For Python 3, this is a much safer and Pythonic approach to convert from byte to string:

def byte_to_str(bytes_or_str):
    if isinstance(bytes_or_str, bytes): # Check if it's in bytes
        print(bytes_or_str.decode('utf-8'))
    else:
        print("Object not of byte type")

byte_to_str(b'total 0\n-rw-rw-r-- 1 thomas thomas 0 Mar  3 07:03 file1\n-rw-rw-r-- 1 thomas thomas 0 Mar  3 07:03 file2\n')

Output:

total 0
-rw-rw-r-- 1 thomas thomas 0 Mar  3 07:03 file1
-rw-rw-r-- 1 thomas thomas 0 Mar  3 07:03 file2

Running a cron every 30 seconds

Cron job cannot be used to schedule a job in seconds interval. i.e You cannot schedule a cron job to run every 5 seconds. The alternative is to write a shell script that uses sleep 5 command in it.

Create a shell script every-5-seconds.sh using bash while loop as shown below.

$ cat every-5-seconds.sh
#!/bin/bash
while true
do
 /home/ramesh/backup.sh
 sleep 5
done

Now, execute this shell script in the background using nohup as shown below. This will keep executing the script even after you logout from your session. This will execute your backup.sh shell script every 5 seconds.

$ nohup ./every-5-seconds.sh &

How to fix warning from date() in PHP"

You could also use this:

ini_alter('date.timezone','Asia/Calcutta');

You should call this before calling any date function. It accepts the key as the first parameter to alter PHP settings during runtime and the second parameter is the value.

I had done these things before I figured out this:

  1. Changed the PHP.timezone to "Asia/Calcutta" - but did not work
  2. Changed the lat and long parameters in the ini - did not work
  3. Used date_default_timezone_set("Asia/Calcutta"); - did not work
  4. Used ini_alter() - IT WORKED
  5. Commented date_default_timezone_set("Asia/Calcutta"); - IT WORKED
  6. Reverted the changes made to the PHP.ini - IT WORKED

For me the init_alter() method got it all working.

Restart node upon changing a file

forever module has a concept of multiple node.js servers, and can start, restart, stop and list currently running servers. It can also watch for changing files and restart node as needed.

Install it if you don't have it already:

npm install forever -g

After installing it, call the forever command: use the -w flag to watch file for changes:

forever -w ./my-script.js

In addition, you can watch directory and ignore patterns:

forever --watch --watchDirectory ./path/to/dir --watchIgnore *.log ./start/file

SQL Server stored procedure Nullable parameter

It looks like you're passing in Null for every argument except for PropertyValueID and DropDownOptionID, right? I don't think any of your IF statements will fire if only these two values are not-null. In short, I think you have a logic error.

Other than that, I would suggest two things...

First, instead of testing for NULL, use this kind syntax on your if statements (it's safer)...

    ELSE IF ISNULL(@UnitValue, 0) != 0 AND ISNULL(@UnitOfMeasureID, 0) = 0

Second, add a meaningful PRINT statement before each UPDATE. That way, when you run the sproc in MSSQL, you can look at the messages and see how far it's actually getting.

Error in <my code> : object of type 'closure' is not subsettable

I had this issue was trying to remove a ui element inside an event reactive:

myReactives <- eventReactive(input$execute, {

I was getting this error, but not on the removeUI element line, it was in the next observer after for some reason. Taking the removeUI method out of the eventReactive and placing it somewhere else removed this error for me.

What is the difference between old style and new style classes in Python?

New style classes may use super(Foo, self) where Foo is a class and self is the instance.

super(type[, object-or-type])

Return a proxy object that delegates method calls to a parent or sibling class of type. This is useful for accessing inherited methods that have been overridden in a class. The search order is same as that used by getattr() except that the type itself is skipped.

And in Python 3.x you can simply use super() inside a class without any parameters.

How to markdown nested list items in Bitbucket?

4 spaces do the trick even inside definition list:

Endpoint
: `/listAgencies`

Method
: `GET`

Arguments
:   * `level` - bla-bla.
    * `withDisabled` - should we include disabled `AGENT`s.
    * `userId` - bla-bla.

I am documenting API using BitBucket Wiki and Markdown proprietary extension for definition list is most pleasing (MD's table syntax is awful, imaging multiline and embedding requirements...).

Difference between View and ViewGroup in Android

  1. A ViewGroup is a special view that can contain other views (called children.) The view group is the base class for layouts and views containers. This class also defines the ViewGroup.LayoutParams class which serves as the base class for layouts parameters.

    View class represents the basic building block for user interface components. A View occupies a rectangular area on the screen and is responsible for drawing and event handling. View is the base class for widgets, which are used to create interactive UI components (buttons, text fields, etc.).

  2. Example : ViewGroup (LinearLayout), View (TextView)

How to find whether a ResultSet is empty or not in Java?

Definitely this gives good solution,

ResultSet rs = stmt.execute("SQL QUERY");
// With the above statement you will not have a null ResultSet 'rs'.
// In case, if any exception occurs then next line of code won't execute.
// So, no problem if I won't check rs as null.

if (rs.next()) {
    do {
      // Logic to retrieve the data from the resultset.
      // eg: rs.getString("abc");
    } while(rs.next());
} else {
    // No data
}

It 'a permission problem when IIS is running I had this problem and I solved it in this way

I went on folders

C:\Windows\ System32\config\SystemProfile

and

C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\SystemProfile

are protected system folders, they usually have the lock.

Right-click-> Card security-> Click on Edit-> Add untente "Autenticadet User" and assign permissions.

At this point everything is solved, if you still have problems try to give all permissions to "Everyone"

What is the actual use of Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver") while connecting to a database?

Use oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver, not oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver. You do not need to register it if the driver jar file is in the "WEB-INF\lib" directory, if you are using Tomcat. Save this as test.jsp and put it in your web directory, and redeploy your web app folder in Tomcat manager:

<%@ page import="java.sql.*" %>

<HTML>
<HEAD>
<TITLE>Simple JSP Oracle Test</TITLE>
</HEAD><BODY>

Connection conn = null;
try {
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver");
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:XXXX:dbName", "user", "password");
    Statement stmt = conn.createStatement();
    out.println("Connection established!");
}
catch (Exception ex)
{
    out.println("Exception: " + ex.getMessage() + "");

}
finally
{
    if (conn != null) {
        try {
            conn.close();
        }

How does bitshifting work in Java?

>> is the Arithmetic Right Shift operator. All of the bits in the first operand are shifted the number of places indicated by the second operand. The leftmost bits in the result are set to the same value as the leftmost bit in the original number. (This is so that negative numbers remain negative.)

Here's your specific case:

00101011
  001010 <-- Shifted twice to the right (rightmost bits dropped)
00001010 <-- Leftmost bits filled with 0s (to match leftmost bit in original number)

How to get element by innerText

You could use xpath to accomplish this

var xpath = "//a[text()='SearchingText']";
var matchingElement = document.evaluate(xpath, document, null, XPathResult.FIRST_ORDERED_NODE_TYPE, null).singleNodeValue;

You can also search of an element containing some text using this xpath:

var xpath = "//a[contains(text(),'Searching')]";

REST API - file (ie images) processing - best practices

There are several decisions to make:

  1. The first about resource path:

    • Model the image as a resource on its own:

      • Nested in user (/user/:id/image): the relationship between the user and the image is made implicitly

      • In the root path (/image):

        • The client is held responsible for establishing the relationship between the image and the user, or;

        • If a security context is being provided with the POST request used to create an image, the server can implicitly establish a relationship between the authenticated user and the image.

    • Embed the image as part of the user

  2. The second decision is about how to represent the image resource:

    • As Base 64 encoded JSON payload
    • As a multipart payload

This would be my decision track:

  • I usually favor design over performance unless there is a strong case for it. It makes the system more maintainable and can be more easily understood by integrators.
  • So my first thought is to go for a Base64 representation of the image resource because it lets you keep everything JSON. If you chose this option you can model the resource path as you like.
    • If the relationship between user and image is 1 to 1 I'd favor to model the image as an attribute specially if both data sets are updated at the same time. In any other case you can freely choose to model the image either as an attribute, updating the it via PUT or PATCH, or as a separate resource.
  • If you choose multipart payload I'd feel compelled to model the image as a resource on is own, so that other resources, in our case, the user resource, is not impacted by the decision of using a binary representation for the image.

Then comes the question: Is there any performance impact about choosing base64 vs multipart?. We could think that exchanging data in multipart format should be more efficient. But this article shows how little do both representations differ in terms of size.

My choice Base64:

  • Consistent design decision
  • Negligible performance impact
  • As browsers understand data URIs (base64 encoded images), there is no need to transform these if the client is a browser
  • I won't cast a vote on whether to have it as an attribute or standalone resource, it depends on your problem domain (which I don't know) and your personal preference.

How do you set the Content-Type header for an HttpClient request?

var content = new JsonContent();
content.Headers.ContentType = new MediaTypeHeaderValue("application/json");
content.Headers.ContentType.Parameters.Add(new NameValueHeaderValue("charset", "utf-8"));
content.Headers.ContentType.Parameters.Add(new NameValueHeaderValue("IEEE754Compatible", "true"));

It's all what you need.

With using Newtonsoft.Json, if you need a content as json string.

Better way to represent array in java properties file

I highly recommend using Apache Commons (http://commons.apache.org/configuration/). It has the ability to use an XML file as a configuration file. Using an XML structure makes it easy to represent arrays as lists of values rather than specially numbered properties.

               WHERE theTable.theField = theValue;

EDIT: Sorry, we store everything in milliseconds not seconds. Fixed it.

Convert .pem to .crt and .key

A .crt stores the certificate.. in pem format. So a .pem, while it can also have other things like a csr (Certificate signing request), a private key, a public key, or other certs, when it is storing just a cert, is the same thing as a .crt.

A pem is a base 64 encoded file with a header and a footer between each section.

To extract a particular section, a perl script such as the following is totally valid, but feel free to use some of the openssl commands.

 perl -ne "\$n++ if /BEGIN/; print if \$n == 1 && /BEGIN/.../END/;" mydomain.pem

where ==1 can be changed to which ever section you need. Obviously if you know exactly the header and footer you require and there is only one of those in the file (usually the case if you keep just the cert and the key in there), you can simplify it:

 perl -ne "print if /^-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----\$/.../END/;" mydomain.pem

How to generate a random string in Ruby

Be aware: rand is predictable for an attacker and therefore probably insecure. You should definitely use SecureRandom if this is for generating passwords. I use something like this:

length = 10
characters = ('A'..'Z').to_a + ('a'..'z').to_a + ('0'..'9').to_a

password = SecureRandom.random_bytes(length).each_char.map do |char|
  characters[(char.ord % characters.length)]
end.join

Entity framework left join

Please make your life easier (don't use join into group):

var query = from ug in UserGroups
            from ugp in UserGroupPrices.Where(x => x.UserGroupId == ug.Id).DefaultIfEmpty()
            select new
            {
                UserGroupID = ug.UserGroupID,
                UserGroupName = ug.UserGroupName,
                Price = ugp != null ? ugp.Price : 0 //this is to handle nulls as even when Price is non-nullable prop it may come as null from SQL (result of Left Outer Join)
            };

How to share data between different threads In C# using AOP?

When you start a thread you are executing a method of some chosen class. All attributes of that class are visible.

  Worker myWorker = new Worker( /* arguments */ );

  Thread myThread = new Thread(new ThreadStart(myWorker.doWork));

  myThread.Start();

Your thread is now in the doWork() method and can see any atrributes of myWorker, which may themselves be other objects. Now you just need to be careful to deal with the cases of having several threads all hitting those attributes at the same time.

What is the HTML5 equivalent to the align attribute in table cells?

According to the HTML5 CR, which requires continued support to “obsolete” features, too, the align=center attribute is rather tricky. Rendering rules for tables say: td elements with that attribute “are expected to center text within themselves, as if they had their 'text-align' property set to 'center' in a presentational hint, and to align descendants to the center.”

And aligning descendants is defined as so that a browser will “align only those descendants that have both their 'margin-left' and 'margin-right' properties computing to a value other than 'auto', that are over-constrained and that have one of those two margins with a used value forced to a greater value, and that do not themselves have an applicable align attribute. When multiple elements are to align a particular descendant, the most deeply nested such element is expected to override the others. Aligned elements are expected to be aligned by having the used values of their left and right margins be set accordingly.”

So it really depends on the content.

Call function with setInterval in jQuery?

First of all: Yes you can mix jQuery with common JS :)

Best way to build up an intervall call of a function is to use setTimeout methode:

For example, if you have a function called test() and want to repeat it all 5 seconds, you could build it up like this:

function test(){
    console.log('test called');
    setTimeout(test, 5000);
}

Finally you have to trigger the function once:

$(document).ready(function(){
    test();
});

This document ready function is called automatically, after all html is loaded.

Windows equivalent of linux cksum command

In combination of answers of @Cassian and @Hllitec and from https://stackoverflow.com/a/42706309/1001717 here my solution, where I put (only!) the checksum value into a variable for further processing:

for /f "delims=" %i in ('certutil -v -hashfile myPackage.nupkg SHA256 ^| find /i /v "sha256" ^| find /i /v "certutil"') do set myVar=%i

To test the output you can add a piped echo command with the var:

for /f "delims=" %i in ('certutil -v -hashfile myPackage.nupkg SHA256 ^| find /i /v "sha256" ^| find /i /v "certutil"') do set myVar=%i | echo %myVar%

A bit off-topic, but FYI: I used this before uploading my NuGet package to Artifactory. BTW. as alternative you can use JFrog CLI, where checksum is calculated automatically.

Chrome says "Resource interpreted as script but transferred with MIME type text/plain.", what gives?

This has nothing to do with jQuery or any quirk of client-side script code. It is a server-side issue: The server(-side application) is not sending the expected HTTP Content-Type header field value for the client-side script resource. This happens if the Web server is insufficiently configured, misconfigured, or a server-side application (e. g., PHP) is generating the client-side script resource.

Proper MIME media types for ECMAScript implementations like JavaScript include:

  • text/javascript (registered as obsolete, not deprecated; but still valid, and supported best)
  • text/ecmascript (registered as obsolete, not deprecated; but still valid)
  • application/javascript
  • application/ecmascript

They do not include application/x-javascript, as the MIME media types listed above are the ones registered in the standards tree by now (so there is no need, and there should be no want, to use experimental ones anymore). Cf. RFC 4329, "Scripting Media Types" (2005 CE) and my Test Case: Support for Scripting Media Types.

One solution is to configure the server if possible, as already recommended. For Apache, this can be as simple as adding the directive

AddType text/javascript .js

(see the Apache HTTP Server documentation for details).

But if the client-side script resource is generated by a server-side application, like PHP, then it is necessary to set the Content-Type header field value explicitly, as the default is likely text/html:

<?php
  header('Content-Type: text/javascript; charset=UTF-8');
  // ...
?>

(That and similar statements must come before any other output – see the PHP manual –, else the HTTP message body is considered to have begun already and it is too late to send more header fields.)

Server-side generation can happen easily to a client-side script resource even if you have plain .js files on the server, if comments are removed from them as they are served, if they are all packed into one large response (to reduce the number of requests, which can be more efficient), or they are minimized by the server-side application in any other way.

How to specify different Debug/Release output directories in QMake .pro file

For my Qt project, I use this scheme in *.pro file:

HEADERS += src/dialogs.h
SOURCES += src/main.cpp \
           src/dialogs.cpp

Release:DESTDIR = release
Release:OBJECTS_DIR = release/.obj
Release:MOC_DIR = release/.moc
Release:RCC_DIR = release/.rcc
Release:UI_DIR = release/.ui

Debug:DESTDIR = debug
Debug:OBJECTS_DIR = debug/.obj
Debug:MOC_DIR = debug/.moc
Debug:RCC_DIR = debug/.rcc
Debug:UI_DIR = debug/.ui

It`s simple, but nice! :)

How to save a base64 image to user's disk using JavaScript?

This Works

function saveBase64AsFile(base64, fileName) {
    var link = document.createElement("a");
    document.body.appendChild(link);
    link.setAttribute("type", "hidden");
    link.href = "data:text/plain;base64," + base64;
    link.download = fileName;
    link.click();
    document.body.removeChild(link);
}

Based on the answer above but with some changes

Javascript: open new page in same window

I'd take that a slightly different way if I were you. Change the text link when the page loads, not on the click. I'll give the example in jQuery, but it could easily be done in vanilla javascript (though, jQuery is nicer)

$(function() {
    $('a[href$="url="]') // all links whose href ends in "url="
        .each(function(i, el) {
            this.href += escape(document.location.href);
        })
    ;
});

and write your HTML like this:

<a href="http://example.com/submit.php?url=">...</a>

the benefits of this are that people can see what they're clicking on (the href is already set), and it removes the javascript from your HTML.

All this said, it looks like you're using PHP... why not add it in server-side?

String to date in Oracle with milliseconds

I don't think you can use fractional seconds with to_date or the DATE type in Oracle. I think you need to_timestamp which returns a TIMESTAMP type.

How do you format code in Visual Studio Code (VSCode)

While changing the default behavior for Visual Studio Code requires an extension, you may override the default behavior in the workspace or user level. It works for most of the supported languages (I can guarantee HTML, JavaScript, and C#).

Workspace level

Benefits

  • Does not require an extension
  • Can be shared among teams

Outcomes

  • .vscode/settings.json is created in the project root folder

How To?

  1. Go to: Menu FilePreferencesWorkspace Settings

  2. Add and save "editor.formatOnType": true to settings.json (which overrides default behavior for the project you work on by creating .vscode/settings.json file).

    How it looks

User environment level

Benefits

  • Does not requires extension
  • Personal development environment tweeking to rule them all (settings:))

Outcomes

  • User's settings.json is modified (see location by operating system below)

How To?

  1. Go to: menu FilePreferencesUser Settings

  2. Add or change the value of "editor.formatOnType": false to "editor.formatOnType": true in the user settings.json

Your Visual Studio Code user's settings.json location is:

Settings file locations depending on your platform, the user settings file is located here:

  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Code\User\settings.json
  • Mac: $HOME/Library/Application Support/Code/User/settings.json
  • Linux: $HOME/.config/Code/User/settings.json The workspace setting file is located under the .vscode folder in your project.

PHP: if !empty & empty

Here's a compact way to do something different in all four cases:

if(empty($youtube)) {
    if(empty($link)) {
        # both empty
    } else {
        # only $youtube not empty
    }
} else {
    if(empty($link)) {
        # only $link empty
    } else {
        # both not empty
    }
}

If you want to use an expression instead, you can use ?: instead:

echo empty($youtube) ? ( empty($link) ? 'both empty' : 'only $youtube not empty' )
                     : ( empty($link) ? 'only $link empty' : 'both not empty' );

How to install Python MySQLdb module using pip?

Many of the given answers here are quite confusing so I will try to put it simply. It helped me to install this

pip install pymysql

and then use the following command in the python file

import pymysql as MySQLdb

This way you can use MySQLdb without any problems.

MySQL: Can't create/write to file '/tmp/#sql_3c6_0.MYI' (Errcode: 2) - What does it even mean?

The filename looks like a temporary table created by a query in MySQL. These files are often very short-lived, they're created during one specific query and cleaned up immediately afterwards.

Yet they can get very large, depending on the amount of data the query needs to process in a temp table. Or you may have multiple concurrent queries creating temp tables, and if enough of these queries run at the same time, they can exhaust disk space.

I do MySQL consulting, and I helped a customer who had intermittent disk full errors on his root partition, even though every time he looked, he had about 6GB free. After we examined his query logs, we discovered that he sometimes had four or more queries running concurrently, each creating a 1.5GB temp table in /tmp, which was on his root partition. Boom!

Solutions I gave him:

  • Increase the MySQL config variables tmp_table_size and max_heap_table_size so MySQL can create really large temp tables in memory. But it's not a good idea to allow MySQL to create 1.5GB temp tables in memory, because there's no way to limit how many of these are created concurrently. You can exhaust your memory pretty quickly this way.

  • Set the MySQL config variable tmpdir to a directory on another disk partition with more space.

  • Figure out which of your queries is creating such big temp tables, and optimize the query. For example, use indexes to help that query reduce its scan to a smaller slice of the table. Or else archive some of the data in the tale so the query doesn't have so many rows to scan.

Loading inline content using FancyBox

The way I figured this out was going through the example index.html/style.css that comes packaged with the Fancybox installation.

If you view the code that is used for the demo website and basically copy/paste, you'll be fine.

To get an inline Fancybox working, you will need to have this code present in your index.html file:

  <head>
    <link href="./fancybox/jquery.fancybox-1.3.4.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" media="screen" />
    <script>!window.jQuery && document.write('<script src="jquery-1.4.3.min.js"><\/script>');</script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1.4/jquery.min.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript" src="./fancybox/jquery.fancybox-1.3.4.pack.js"></script>
    <script type="text/javascript">
    $(document).ready(function() {

    $("#various1").fancybox({
            'titlePosition'     : 'inside',
            'transitionIn'      : 'none',
            'transitionOut'     : 'none'
        });
    });
    </script>
  </head>

 <body>

    <a id="various1" href="#inline1" title="Put a title here">Name of Link Here</a>
    <div style="display: none;">
        <div id="inline1" style="width:400px;height:100px;overflow:auto;">
                   Write whatever text you want right here!!
        </div>
    </div>

</body>

Remember to be precise about what folders your script files are placed in and where you are pointing to in the Head tag; they must correspond.

Regex: Specify "space or start of string" and "space or end of string"

Here's what I would use:

 (?<!\S)stackoverflow(?!\S)

In other words, match "stackoverflow" if it's not preceded by a non-whitespace character and not followed by a non-whitespace character.

This is neater (IMO) than the "space-or-anchor" approach, and it doesn't assume the string starts and ends with word characters like the \b approach does.

Can you force Vue.js to reload/re-render?

Please read this http://michaelnthiessen.com/force-re-render/

The horrible way: reloading the entire page
The terrible way: using the v-if hack
The better way: using Vue’s built-in forceUpdate method
The best way: key-changing on your component

<template>
   <component-to-re-render :key="componentKey" />
</template>

<script>
 export default {
  data() {
    return {
      componentKey: 0,
    };
  },
  methods: {
    forceRerender() {
      this.componentKey += 1;
    }
  }
 }
</script>

I also use watch: in some situations.

jQuery: how to scroll to certain anchor/div on page load?

i achieve it like this..

if(location.pathname == '/registration')
{
$('html, body').animate({ scrollTop: $('#registration').offset().top - 40}, 1000);
}

<select> HTML element with height

You can also "center" the text with:

vertical-align: middle;

Pandas dataframe get first row of each group

I'd suggest to use .nth(0) rather than .first() if you need to get the first row.

The difference between them is how they handle NaNs, so .nth(0) will return the first row of group no matter what are the values in this row, while .first() will eventually return the first not NaN value in each column.

E.g. if your dataset is :

df = pd.DataFrame({'id' : [1,1,1,2,2,3,3,3,3,4,4],
            'value'  : ["first","second","third", np.NaN,
                        "second","first","second","third",
                        "fourth","first","second"]})

>>> df.groupby('id').nth(0)
    value
id
1    first
2    NaN
3    first
4    first

And

>>> df.groupby('id').first()
    value
id
1    first
2    second
3    first
4    first

How to prevent scrollbar from repositioning web page?

I tried to fix likely the same issue which caused by twitter bootstrap .modal-open class applied to body. The solution html {overflow-y: scroll} doesn't help. One possible solution I found is to add {width: 100%; width: 100vw} to the html element.

SQL state [99999]; error code [17004]; Invalid column type: 1111 With Spring SimpleJdbcCall

Finally I solve the issues using below code. This type of error will happen when there is a mismatch between In/Out parameter as declare in procedure and in java code declareParameters. Here we need to defined oracle return tab

public class ManualSaleStoredProcedureDao {

private SimpleJdbcCall getAllSytemUsers;

public List<SystemUser> getAllSytemUsers(String clientCode) {

    MapSqlParameterSource in = new MapSqlParameterSource();
    in.addValue("pi_client_code", clientCode);
    Map<String, Object> result = getAllSytemUsers.execute(in);
    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    List<SystemUser> systemUsers = (List<SystemUser>) result
            .get(VSCConstants.GET_SYSTEM_USER_OUT_PARAM1);
    return systemUsers;

}

public void setDataSource(DataSource dataSource) {

    getAllSytemUsers = new SimpleJdbcCall(dataSource)
            .withSchemaName(VSCConstants.SCHEMA)
            .withProcedureName(VSCConstants.GET_SYSTEM_USER_PROC_NAME)
            .declareParameters(
                    new SqlParameter(
                            "pi_client_code",

                    new SqlInOutParameter(
                            "po_system_users",

How to write files to assets folder or raw folder in android?

Why not update the files on the local file system instead? You can read/write files into your applications sandboxed area.

Other alternatives you may want to look into are Shared Perferences and using Cache Files (all described at the link above)

SQL alias for SELECT statement

Fastest way to download a GitHub project

There is a new (sometime pre April 2013) option on the site that says "Clone in Windows".

This works very nicely if you already have the Windows GitHub Client as mentioned by @Tommy in his answer on this related question (How to download source in ZIP format from GitHub?).

How to do one-liner if else statement?

As the others mentioned, Go does not support ternary one-liners. However, I wrote a utility function that could help you achieve what you want.

// IfThenElse evaluates a condition, if true returns the first parameter otherwise the second
func IfThenElse(condition bool, a interface{}, b interface{}) interface{} {
    if condition {
        return a
    }
    return b
}

Here are some test cases to show how you can use it

func TestIfThenElse(t *testing.T) {
    assert.Equal(t, IfThenElse(1 == 1, "Yes", false), "Yes")
    assert.Equal(t, IfThenElse(1 != 1, nil, 1), 1)
    assert.Equal(t, IfThenElse(1 < 2, nil, "No"), nil)
}

For fun, I wrote more useful utility functions such as:

IfThen(1 == 1, "Yes") // "Yes"
IfThen(1 != 1, "Woo") // nil
IfThen(1 < 2, "Less") // "Less"

IfThenElse(1 == 1, "Yes", false) // "Yes"
IfThenElse(1 != 1, nil, 1)       // 1
IfThenElse(1 < 2, nil, "No")     // nil

DefaultIfNil(nil, nil)  // nil
DefaultIfNil(nil, "")   // ""
DefaultIfNil("A", "B")  // "A"
DefaultIfNil(true, "B") // true
DefaultIfNil(1, false)  // 1

FirstNonNil(nil, nil)                // nil
FirstNonNil(nil, "")                 // ""
FirstNonNil("A", "B")                // "A"
FirstNonNil(true, "B")               // true
FirstNonNil(1, false)                // 1
FirstNonNil(nil, nil, nil, 10)       // 10
FirstNonNil(nil, nil, nil, nil, nil) // nil
FirstNonNil()                        // nil

If you would like to use any of these, you can find them here https://github.com/shomali11/util

Is there a way to get a list of all current temporary tables in SQL Server?

For SQL Server 2000, this should tell you only the #temp tables in your session. (Adapted from my example for more modern versions of SQL Server here.) This assumes you don't name your tables with three consecutive underscores, like CREATE TABLE #foo___bar:

SELECT
  name = SUBSTRING(t.name, 1, CHARINDEX('___', t.name)-1),
  t.id
FROM tempdb..sysobjects AS t
WHERE t.name LIKE '#%[_][_][_]%'
AND t.id =
  OBJECT_ID('tempdb..' + SUBSTRING(t.name, 1, CHARINDEX('___', t.name)-1));

Proper way to use **kwargs in Python

While most answers are saying that, e.g.,

def f(**kwargs):
    foo = kwargs.pop('foo')
    bar = kwargs.pop('bar')
    ...etc...

is "the same as"

def f(foo=None, bar=None, **kwargs):
    ...etc...

this is not true. In the latter case, f can be called as f(23, 42), while the former case accepts named arguments only -- no positional calls. Often you want to allow the caller maximum flexibility and therefore the second form, as most answers assert, is preferable: but that is not always the case. When you accept many optional parameters of which typically only a few are passed, it may be an excellent idea (avoiding accidents and unreadable code at your call sites!) to force the use of named arguments -- threading.Thread is an example. The first form is how you implement that in Python 2.

The idiom is so important that in Python 3 it now has special supporting syntax: every argument after a single * in the def signature is keyword-only, that is, cannot be passed as a positional argument, but only as a named one. So in Python 3 you could code the above as:

def f(*, foo=None, bar=None, **kwargs):
    ...etc...

Indeed, in Python 3 you can even have keyword-only arguments that aren't optional (ones without a default value).

However, Python 2 still has long years of productive life ahead, so it's better to not forget the techniques and idioms that let you implement in Python 2 important design ideas that are directly supported in the language in Python 3!

Uninitialized non-static members will contain random data. Actually, they will just have the value of the memory location they are assigned to.

Of course for object parameters (like string) the object's constructor could do a default initialization.

In your example:

int *ptr; // will point to a random memory location
string name; // empty string (due to string's default costructor)
string *pname; // will point to a random memory location
string &rname; // it would't compile
const string &crname; // it would't compile
int age; // random value

Gray out image with CSS?

Better to support all the browsers:

img.lessOpacity {

   filter: alpha(opacity=40);
   zoom: 1; /* needed to trigger "hasLayout" in IE if no width or height is set */
}

R data formats: RData, Rda, Rds etc

In addition to @KenM's answer, another important distinction is that, when loading in a saved object, you can assign the contents of an Rds file. Not so for Rda

> x <- 1:5
> save(x, file="x.Rda")
> saveRDS(x, file="x.Rds")
> rm(x)

## ASSIGN USING readRDS
> new_x1 <- readRDS("x.Rds")
> new_x1
[1] 1 2 3 4 5

## 'ASSIGN' USING load -- note the result
> new_x2 <- load("x.Rda")
loading in to  <environment: R_GlobalEnv>
> new_x2
[1] "x"
# NOTE: `load()` simply returns the name of the objects loaded. Not the values.
> x
[1] 1 2 3 4 5

javascript jquery radio button click

There are several ways to do this. Having a container around the radio buttons is highly recommended regardless, but you can also put a class directly on the buttons. With this HTML:

<ul id="shapeList" class="radioList">
<li><label>Shape:</label></li>
<li><input id="shapeList_0" class="shapeButton" type="radio" value="Circular" name="shapeList" /><label for="shapeList_0">Circular</label></li>
<li><input id="shapeList_1" class="shapeButton" type="radio" value="Rectangular" name="shapeList" /><label for="shapeList_1">Rectangular</label></li>
</ul>

you can select by class:

$(".shapeButton").click(SetShape);

or select by container ID:

$("#shapeList").click(SetShape);

In either case, the event will trigger on clicking either the radio button or the label for it, though oddly in the latter case (Selecting by "#shapeList"), clicking on the label will trigger the click function twice for some reason, at least in FireFox; selecting by class won't do that.

SetShape is a function, and looks like this:

function SetShape() {
    var Shape = $('.shapeButton:checked').val();
//dostuff
}

This way, you can have labels on your buttons, and can have multiple radio button lists on the same page that do different things. You can even have each individual button in the same list do different things by setting up different behavior in SetShape() based on the button's value.

Return from a promise then()

To use a promise, you have to either call a function that creates a promise or you have to create one yourself. You don't really describe what problem you're really trying to solve, but here's how you would create a promise yourself:

_x000D_
_x000D_
function justTesting(input) {_x000D_
    return new Promise(function(resolve, reject) {_x000D_
        // some async operation here_x000D_
        setTimeout(function() {_x000D_
            // resolve the promise with some value_x000D_
            resolve(input + 10);_x000D_
        }, 500);_x000D_
    });_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
justTesting(29).then(function(val) {_x000D_
   // you access the value from the promise here_x000D_
   log(val);_x000D_
});_x000D_
_x000D_
// display output in snippet_x000D_
function log(x) {_x000D_
    document.write(x);_x000D_
}
_x000D_
_x000D_
_x000D_

Or, if you already have a function that returns a promise, you can use that function and return its promise:

_x000D_
_x000D_
// function that returns a promise_x000D_
function delay(t) {_x000D_
  return new Promise(function(resolve) {_x000D_
    setTimeout(function() {_x000D_
      resolve();_x000D_
    }, t);_x000D_
  });_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
function justTesting(input) {_x000D_
  return delay(100).then(function() {_x000D_
    return input + 10;_x000D_
  });_x000D_
}_x000D_
_x000D_
justTesting(29).then(function(val) {_x000D_
  // you access the value from the promise here_x000D_
  log(val);_x000D_
});_x000D_
_x000D_
// display output in snippet_x000D_
function log(x) {_x000D_
  document.write(x);_x000D_
}
_x000D_

error: pathspec 'test-branch' did not match any file(s) known to git

My friend, you need to create those corresponding branches locally first, in order to check-out to those other two branches, using this line of code

git branch test-branch

and

git branch change-the-title

then only you will be able to do git checkout to those branches

Also after creating each branch, take latest changes of those particular branches by using git pull origin branch_name as shown in below code

git branch test-branch
git checkout test-branch
git pull origin test-branch

and for other branch named change-the-title run following code =>

git branch change-the-title
git checkout change-the-title
git pull origin change-the-title

Reading *.wav files in Python

Different Python modules to read wav:

There is at least these following libraries to read wave audio files:

The most simple example:

This is a simple example with SoundFile:

import soundfile as sf
data, samplerate = sf.read('existing_file.wav')

Format of the output:

Warning, the data are not always in the same format, that depends on the library. For instance:

from scikits import audiolab
from scipy.io import wavfile
from sys import argv
for filepath in argv[1:]:
    x, fs, nb_bits = audiolab.wavread(filepath)
    print('Reading with scikits.audiolab.wavread:', x)
    fs, x = wavfile.read(filepath)
    print('Reading with scipy.io.wavfile.read:', x)

Output:

Reading with scikits.audiolab.wavread: [ 0.          0.          0.         ..., -0.00097656 -0.00079346 -0.00097656]
Reading with scipy.io.wavfile.read: [  0   0   0 ..., -32 -26 -32]

SoundFile and Audiolab return floats between -1 and 1 (as matab does, that is the convention for audio signals). Scipy and wave return integers, which you can convert to floats according to the number of bits of encoding, for example:

from scipy.io.wavfile import read as wavread
samplerate, x = wavread(audiofilename) # x is a numpy array of integers, representing the samples
# scale to -1.0 -- 1.0
if x.dtype == 'int16':
    nb_bits = 16  # -> 16-bit wav files
elif x.dtype == 'int32':
    nb_bits = 32  # -> 32-bit wav files
max_nb_bit = float(2 ** (nb_bits - 1))
samples = x / (max_nb_bit + 1)  # samples is a numpy array of floats representing the samples

Why javascript getTime() is not a function?

To use this function/method,you need an instance of the class Date .

This method is always used in conjunction with a Date object.

See the code below :

var d = new Date();
d.getTime();

How can I upgrade specific packages using pip and a requirements file?

If you upgrade a package, the old one will be uninstalled.

A convenient way to do this is to use this pip-upgrader which also updates the versions in your requirements.txt file for the chosen packages (or all packages).

Installation

pip install pip-upgrader

Usage

Activate your virtualenv (important, because it will also install the new versions of upgraded packages in current virtualenv).

cd into your project directory, and then run:

pip-upgrade

Advanced usage

If the requirements are placed in a non-standard location, send them as arguments:

pip-upgrade path/to/requirements.txt

If you already know what package you want to upgrade, simply send them as arguments:

pip-upgrade -p django -p celery -p dateutil

If you need to upgrade to pre-release / post-release version, add --prerelease argument to your command.

Full disclosure: I wrote this package.

How to sort a HashMap in Java

have you considered using a LinkedHashMap<>()..?

  public static void main(String[] args) {
    Map<Object, Object> handler = new LinkedHashMap<Object, Object>();
    handler.put("item", "Value");
    handler.put(2, "Movies");
    handler.put("isAlive", true);

    for (Map.Entry<Object, Object> entrY : handler.entrySet())
        System.out.println(entrY.getKey() + ">>" + entrY.getValue());

    List<Map.Entry<String, Integer>> entries = new ArrayList<Map.Entry<String, Integer>>();
    Collections.sort(entries, new Comparator<Map.Entry<String, Integer>>() {
        public int compare(Map.Entry<String, Integer> a,
                Map.Entry<String, Integer> b) {
            return a.getValue().compareTo(b.getValue());
        }
    });
}

results into an organized linked object.

 item>>Value
 2>>Movies
 isAlive>>true

How to use hex color values

I made a small function,placed it from where I can use it globally & working fine with swift 2.1:

func getColorFromHex(rgbValue:UInt32)->UIColor{
   let red = CGFloat((rgbValue & 0xFF0000) >> 16)/255.0
   let green = CGFloat((rgbValue & 0xFF00) >> 8)/255.0
   let blue = CGFloat(rgbValue & 0xFF)/255.0

   return UIColor(red:red, green:green, blue:blue, alpha:1.0)
}

usage:

getColorFromHex(0xffffff)

UnsupportedClassVersionError unsupported major.minor version 51.0 unable to load class

Well presumably it's not using the same version of Java when running it externally. Look through the startup scripts carefully to find where it picks up the version of Java to run. You should also check the startup logs to see whether they indicate which version is running.

Alternatively, unless you need the Java 7 features, you could always change your compiler preferences in Eclipse to target 1.6 instead.

What's the difference between a method and a function?

A very general definition of the main difference between a Function and a Method:

Functions are defined outside of classes, while Methods are defined inside of and part of classes.

What's your most controversial programming opinion?

Goto is OK! (is that controversial enough)
Sometimes... so give us the choice! For example, BASH doesn't have goto. Maybe there is some internal reason for this but still.
Also, goto is the building block of Assembly language. No if statements for you! :)

Adding a stylesheet to asp.net (using Visual Studio 2010)

The only thing you have to do is to add in the cshtml file, in the head, the following line:

        @Styles.Render("~/Content/Main.css")

The entire head will look somethink like that:

    <head>
         <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8">
         <title>HTML Page</title>
         @Styles.Render("~/Content/main.css")
    </head>

Hope it helps!!

SVN checkout the contents of a folder, not the folder itself

Just add a . to it:

svn checkout file:///home/landonwinters/svn/waterproject/trunk .

That means: check out to current directory.

Which HTML Parser is the best?

The best I've seen so far is HtmlCleaner:

HtmlCleaner is open-source HTML parser written in Java. HTML found on Web is usually dirty, ill-formed and unsuitable for further processing. For any serious consumption of such documents, it is necessary to first clean up the mess and bring the order to tags, attributes and ordinary text. For the given HTML document, HtmlCleaner reorders individual elements and produces well-formed XML. By default, it follows similar rules that the most of web browsers use in order to create Document Object Model. However, user may provide custom tag and rule set for tag filtering and balancing.

With HtmlCleaner you can locate any element using XPath.

For other html parsers see this SO question.

refresh leaflet map: map container is already initialized

I had the same problem on angular when switching page. I had to add this code before leaving the page to make it works:

    $scope.$on('$locationChangeStart', function( event ) {
    if(map != undefined)
    {
      map.remove();
      map = undefined
      document.getElementById('mapLayer').innerHTML = "";
    }
});

Without document.getElementById('mapLayer').innerHTML = "" the map was not displayed on the next page.

Declare and assign multiple string variables at the same time

Just a reminder: Implicit type var in multiple declaration is not allowed. There might be the following compilation errors.

var Foo = 0, Bar = 0;

Implicitly-typed variables cannot have multiple declarators

Similarly,

var Foo, Bar;

Implicitly-typed variables must be initialized

Converting string into datetime

datetime.strptime is the main routine for parsing strings into datetimes. It can handle all sorts of formats, with the format determined by a format string you give it:

from datetime import datetime

datetime_object = datetime.strptime('Jun 1 2005  1:33PM', '%b %d %Y %I:%M%p')

The resulting datetime object is timezone-naive.

Notes:

  • strptime = "string parse time"
  • strftime = "string format time"
  • Pronounce it out loud today & you won't have to search for it again in 6 months.

Calling Python in PHP

I do this kind of thing all the time for quick-and-dirty scripts. It's quite common to have a CGI or PHP script that just uses system/popen to call some external program.

Just be extra careful if your web server is open to the internet at large. Be sure to sanitize your GET/POST input in this case so as to not allow attackers to run arbitrary commands on your machine.

How to get the difference between two dictionaries in Python?

What about this? Not as pretty but explicit.

orig_dict = {'a' : 1, 'b' : 2}
new_dict = {'a' : 2, 'v' : 'hello', 'b' : 2}

updates = {}
for k2, v2 in new_dict.items():
    if k2 in orig_dict:
        if v2 != orig_dict[k2]:
            updates.update({k2 : v2})
    else:
        updates.update({k2 : v2})

#test it
#value of 'a' was changed
#'v' is a completely new entry
assert all(k in updates for k in ['a', 'v'])

Simple way to repeat a string

Despite your desire not to use loops, I think you should use a loop.

String repeatString(String s, int repetitions)
{
    if(repetitions < 0) throw SomeException();

    else if(s == null) return null;

    StringBuilder stringBuilder = new StringBuilder(s.length() * repetitions);

    for(int i = 0; i < repetitions; i++)
        stringBuilder.append(s);

    return stringBuilder.toString();
}

Your reasons for not using a for loop are not good ones. In response to your criticisms:

  1. Whatever solution you use will almost certainly be longer than this. Using a pre-built function only tucks it under more covers.
  2. Someone reading your code will have to figure out what you're doing in that non-for-loop. Given that a for-loop is the idiomatic way to do this, it would be much easier to figure out if you did it with a for loop.
  3. Yes someone might add something clever, but by avoiding a for loop you are doing something clever. That's like shooting yourself in the foot intentionally to avoid shooting yourself in the foot by accident.
  4. Off-by-one errors are also mind-numbingly easy to catch with a single test. Given that you should be testing your code, an off-by-one error should be easy to fix and catch. And it's worth noting: the code above does not contain an off-by-one error. For loops are equally easy to get right.
  5. So don't reuse variables. That's not the for-loop's fault.
  6. Again, so does whatever solution you use. And as I noted before; a bug hunter will probably be expecting you to do this with a for loop, so they'll have an easier time finding it if you use a for loop.

Is it possible to animate scrollTop with jQuery?

I have what I believe is a better solution than the $('html, body') hack.

It's not a one-liner, but the issue I had with $('html, body') is that if you log $(window).scrollTop() during the animation, you'll see that the value jumps all over the place, sometimes by hundreds of pixels (though I don't see anything like that happening visually). I needed the value to be predictable, so that I could cancel the animation if the user grabbed the scroll bar or twirled the mousewheel during the auto-scroll.

Here is a function will animate scrolling smoothly:

function animateScrollTop(target, duration) {
    duration = duration || 16;
    var scrollTopProxy = { value: $(window).scrollTop() };
    if (scrollTopProxy.value != target) {
        $(scrollTopProxy).animate(
            { value: target },
            { duration: duration, step: function (stepValue) {
                var rounded = Math.round(stepValue);
                $(window).scrollTop(rounded);
            }
        });
    }
}

Below is a more complex version that will cancel the animation on user interaction, as well as refiring until the target value is reached, which is useful when trying to set the scrollTop instantaneously (e.g. simply calling $(window).scrollTop(1000) — in my experience, this fails to work about 50% of the time.)

function animateScrollTop(target, duration) {
    duration = duration || 16;

    var $window = $(window);
    var scrollTopProxy = { value: $window.scrollTop() };
    var expectedScrollTop = scrollTopProxy.value;

    if (scrollTopProxy.value != target) {
        $(scrollTopProxy).animate(
            { value: target },
            {
                duration: duration,

                step: function (stepValue) {
                    var roundedValue = Math.round(stepValue);
                    if ($window.scrollTop() !== expectedScrollTop) {
                        // The user has tried to scroll the page
                        $(scrollTopProxy).stop();
                    }
                    $window.scrollTop(roundedValue);
                    expectedScrollTop = roundedValue;
                },

                complete: function () {
                    if ($window.scrollTop() != target) {
                        setTimeout(function () {
                            animateScrollTop(target);
                        }, 16);
                    }
                }
            }
        );
    }
}

How to get the first non-null value in Java?

Git - push current branch shortcut

The simplest way: run git push -u origin feature/123-sandbox-tests once. That pushes the branch the way you're used to doing it and also sets the upstream tracking info in your local config. After that, you can just git push to push tracked branches to their upstream remote(s).

You can also do this in the config yourself by setting branch.<branch name>.merge to the remote branch name (in your case the same as the local name) and optionally, branch.<branch name>.remote to the name of the remote you want to push to (defaults to origin). If you look in your config, there's most likely already one of these set for master, so you can follow that example.

Finally, make sure you consider the push.default setting. It defaults to "matching", which can have undesired and unexpected results. Most people I know find "upstream" more intuitive, which pushes only the current branch.

Details on each of these settings can be found in the git-config man page.

On second thought, on re-reading your question, I think you know all this. I think what you're actually looking for doesn't exist. How about a bash function something like (untested):

function pushCurrent {
  git config push.default upstream
  git push
  git config push.default matching
}

Alternative to mysql_real_escape_string without connecting to DB

It is impossible to safely escape a string without a DB connection. mysql_real_escape_string() and prepared statements need a connection to the database so that they can escape the string using the appropriate character set - otherwise SQL injection attacks are still possible using multi-byte characters.

If you are only testing, then you may as well use mysql_escape_string(), it's not 100% guaranteed against SQL injection attacks, but it's impossible to build anything safer without a DB connection.

How to recognize swipe in all 4 directions

First create a baseViewController and add viewDidLoad this code "swift4":

class BaseViewController: UIViewController {

     override func viewDidLoad() {
         super.viewDidLoad()
         let swipeRight = UISwipeGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: #selector(swiped))
         swipeRight.direction = UISwipeGestureRecognizerDirection.right
         self.view.addGestureRecognizer(swipeRight)
         let swipeLeft = UISwipeGestureRecognizer(target: self, action: #selector(swiped))
         swipeLeft.direction = UISwipeGestureRecognizerDirection.left
         self.view.addGestureRecognizer(swipeLeft)
     }

     // Example Tabbar 5 pages
     @objc func swiped(_ gesture: UISwipeGestureRecognizer) {
         if gesture.direction == .left {
            if (self.tabBarController?.selectedIndex)! < 5 {
                self.tabBarController?.selectedIndex += 1
            }
         } else if gesture.direction == .right {
             if (self.tabBarController?.selectedIndex)! > 0 {
                 self.tabBarController?.selectedIndex -= 1
             }
         }
     }
}

And use this baseController class:

class YourViewController: BaseViewController {
    // its done. Swipe successful
    //Now you can use all the Controller you have created without writing any code.
}

What is the logic behind the "using" keyword in C++?

In C++11, the using keyword when used for type alias is identical to typedef.

7.1.3.2

A typedef-name can also be introduced by an alias-declaration. The identifier following the using keyword becomes a typedef-name and the optional attribute-specifier-seq following the identifier appertains to that typedef-name. It has the same semantics as if it were introduced by the typedef specifier. In particular, it does not define a new type and it shall not appear in the type-id.

Bjarne Stroustrup provides a practical example:

typedef void (*PFD)(double); // C style typedef to make `PFD` a pointer to a function returning void and accepting double
using PF = void (*)(double); // `using`-based equivalent of the typedef above
using P = [](double)->void; // using plus suffix return type, syntax error
using P = auto(double)->void // Fixed thanks to DyP

Pre-C++11, the using keyword can bring member functions into scope. In C++11, you can now do this for constructors (another Bjarne Stroustrup example):

class Derived : public Base {
public:
    using Base::f;    // lift Base's f into Derived's scope -- works in C++98
    void f(char);     // provide a new f
    void f(int);      // prefer this f to Base::f(int)

    using Base::Base; // lift Base constructors Derived's scope -- C++11 only
    Derived(char);    // provide a new constructor
    Derived(int);     // prefer this constructor to Base::Base(int)
    // ...
};

Ben Voight provides a pretty good reason behind the rationale of not introducing a new keyword or new syntax. The standard wants to avoid breaking old code as much as possible. This is why in proposal documents you will see sections like Impact on the Standard, Design decisions, and how they might affect older code. There are situations when a proposal seems like a really good idea but might not have traction because it would be too difficult to implement, too confusing, or would contradict old code.

Here is an old paper from 2003 n1449. The rationale seems to be related to templates. Warning: there may be typos due to copying over from PDF.

First let’s consider a toy example:

template <typename T>
class MyAlloc {/*...*/};

template <typename T, class A>
class MyVector {/*...*/};

template <typename T>

struct Vec {
typedef MyVector<T, MyAlloc<T> > type;
};
Vec<int>::type p; // sample usage

The fundamental problem with this idiom, and the main motivating fact for this proposal, is that the idiom causes the template parameters to appear in non-deducible context. That is, it will not be possible to call the function foo below without explicitly specifying template arguments.

template <typename T> void foo (Vec<T>::type&);

So, the syntax is somewhat ugly. We would rather avoid the nested ::type We’d prefer something like the following:

template <typename T>
using Vec = MyVector<T, MyAlloc<T> >; //defined in section 2 below
Vec<int> p; // sample usage

Note that we specifically avoid the term “typedef template” and introduce the new syntax involving the pair “using” and “=” to help avoid confusion: we are not defining any types here, we are introducing a synonym (i.e. alias) for an abstraction of a type-id (i.e. type expression) involving template parameters. If the template parameters are used in deducible contexts in the type expression then whenever the template alias is used to form a template-id, the values of the corresponding template parameters can be deduced – more on this will follow. In any case, it is now possible to write generic functions which operate on Vec<T> in deducible context, and the syntax is improved as well. For example we could rewrite foo as:

template <typename T> void foo (Vec<T>&);

We underscore here that one of the primary reasons for proposing template aliases was so that argument deduction and the call to foo(p) will succeed.

The follow-up paper n1489 explains why using instead of using typedef:

It has been suggested to (re)use the keyword typedef — as done in the paper [4] — to introduce template aliases:

template<class T>
    typedef std::vector<T, MyAllocator<T> > Vec;

That notation has the advantage of using a keyword already known to introduce a type alias. However, it also displays several disavantages among which the confusion of using a keyword known to introduce an alias for a type-name in a context where the alias does not designate a type, but a template; Vec is not an alias for a type, and should not be taken for a typedef-name. The name Vec is a name for the family std::vector< [bullet] , MyAllocator< [bullet] > > – where the bullet is a placeholder for a type-name. Consequently we do not propose the “typedef” syntax. On the other hand the sentence

template<class T>
    using Vec = std::vector<T, MyAllocator<T> >;

can be read/interpreted as: from now on, I’ll be using Vec<T> as a synonym for std::vector<T, MyAllocator<T> >. With that reading, the new syntax for aliasing seems reasonably logical.

I think the important distinction is made here, aliases instead of types. Another quote from the same document:

An alias-declaration is a declaration, and not a definition. An alias- declaration introduces a name into a declarative region as an alias for the type designated by the right-hand-side of the declaration. The core of this proposal concerns itself with type name aliases, but the notation can obviously be generalized to provide alternate spellings of namespace-aliasing or naming set of overloaded functions (see ? 2.3 for further discussion). [My note: That section discusses what that syntax can look like and reasons why it isn't part of the proposal.] It may be noted that the grammar production alias-declaration is acceptable anywhere a typedef declaration or a namespace-alias-definition is acceptable.

Summary, for the role of using:

  • template aliases (or template typedefs, the former is preferred namewise)
  • namespace aliases (i.e., namespace PO = boost::program_options and using PO = ... equivalent)
  • the document says A typedef declaration can be viewed as a special case of non-template alias-declaration. It's an aesthetic change, and is considered identical in this case.
  • bringing something into scope (for example, namespace std into the global scope), member functions, inheriting constructors

It cannot be used for:

int i;
using r = i; // compile-error

Instead do:

using r = decltype(i);

Naming a set of overloads.

// bring cos into scope
using std::cos;

// invalid syntax
using std::cos(double);

// not allowed, instead use Bjarne Stroustrup function pointer alias example
using test = std::cos(double);

SQL query to get the deadlocks in SQL SERVER 2008

In order to capture deadlock graphs without using a trace (you don't need profiler necessarily), you can enable trace flag 1222. This will write deadlock information to the error log. However, the error log is textual, so you won't get nice deadlock graph pictures - you'll have to read the text of the deadlocks to figure it out.

I would set this as a startup trace flag (in which case you'll need to restart the service). However, you can run it only for the current running instance of the service (which won't require a restart, but which won't resume upon the next restart) using the following global trace flag command:

DBCC TRACEON(1222, -1);

A quick search yielded this tutorial:

http://www.mssqltips.com/sqlservertip/2130/finding-sql-server-deadlocks-using-trace-flag-1222/

Also note that if your system experiences a lot of deadlocks, this can really hammer your error log, and can become quite a lot of noise, drowning out other, important errors.

Have you considered third party monitoring tools? SQL Sentry Performance Advisor, for example, has a much nicer deadlock graph, showing you object / index names as well as the order in which the locks were taken. As a bonus, these are captured for you automatically on monitored servers without having to configure trace flags, run your own traces, etc.:

What is the best Java email address validation method?

Apache Commons validator can be used as mentioned in the other answers.

pom.xml:

<dependency>
    <groupId>commons-validator</groupId>
    <artifactId>commons-validator</artifactId>
    <version>1.4.1</version>
</dependency>

build.gradle:

compile 'commons-validator:commons-validator:1.4.1'

The import:

import org.apache.commons.validator.routines.EmailValidator;

The code:

String email = "[email protected]";
boolean valid = EmailValidator.getInstance().isValid(email);

and to allow local addresses

boolean allowLocal = true;
boolean valid = EmailValidator.getInstance(allowLocal).isValid(email);

Apply Calibri (Body) font to text

There is no such font as “Calibri (Body)”. You probably saw this string in Microsoft Word font selection menu, but it’s not a font name (see e.g. the explanation Font: +body (in W07)).

So use just font-family: Calibri or, better, font-family: Calibri, sans-serif. (There is no adequate backup font for Calibri, but the odds are that when Calibri is not available, the browser’s default sans-serif font suits your design better than the browser’s default font, which is most often a serif font.)

Makefile: How to correctly include header file and its directory?

This is not a question about make, it is a question about the semantic of the #include directive.

The problem is, that there is no file at the path "../StdCUtil/StdCUtil/split.h". This is the path that results when the compiler combines the include path "../StdCUtil" with the relative path from the #include directive "StdCUtil/split.h".

To fix this, just use -I.. instead of -I../StdCUtil.

Storing integer values as constants in Enum manner in java

Well, you can't quite do it that way. PAGE.SIGN_CREATE will never return 1; it will return PAGE.SIGN_CREATE. That's the point of enumerated types.

However, if you're willing to add a few keystrokes, you can add fields to your enums, like this:

    public enum PAGE{
        SIGN_CREATE(0),
        SIGN_CREATE_BONUS(1),
        HOME_SCREEN(2),
        REGISTER_SCREEN(3);

        private final int value;

        PAGE(final int newValue) {
            value = newValue;
        }

        public int getValue() { return value; }
    }

And then you call PAGE.SIGN_CREATE.getValue() to get 0.

Optional Parameters in Go?

I am a little late, but if you like fluent interface you might design your setters for chained calls like this:

type myType struct {
  s string
  a, b int
}

func New(s string, err *error) *myType {
  if s == "" {
    *err = errors.New(
      "Mandatory argument `s` must not be empty!")
  }
  return &myType{s: s}
}

func (this *myType) setA (a int, err *error) *myType {
  if *err == nil {
    if a == 42 {
      *err = errors.New("42 is not the answer!")
    } else {
      this.a = a
    }
  }
  return this
}

func (this *myType) setB (b int, _ *error) *myType {
  this.b = b
  return this
}

And then call it like this:

func main() {
  var err error = nil
  instance :=
    New("hello", &err).
    setA(1, &err).
    setB(2, &err)

  if err != nil {
    fmt.Println("Failed: ", err)
  } else {
    fmt.Println(instance)
  }
}

This is similar to the Functional options idiom presented on @Ripounet answer and enjoys the same benefits but has some drawbacks:

  1. If an error occurs it will not abort immediately, thus, it would be slightly less efficient if you expect your constructor to report errors often.
  2. You'll have to spend a line declaring an err variable and zeroing it.

There is, however, a possible small advantage, this type of function calls should be easier for the compiler to inline but I am really not a specialist.

How do I read CSV data into a record array in NumPy?

You can use Numpy's genfromtxt() method to do so, by setting the delimiter kwarg to a comma.

from numpy import genfromtxt
my_data = genfromtxt('my_file.csv', delimiter=',')

More information on the function can be found at its respective documentation.

Inserting created_at data with Laravel

In your User model, add the following line in the User class:

public $timestamps = true;

Now, whenever you save or update a user, Laravel will automatically update the created_at and updated_at fields.

Update:
If you want to set the created at manually you should use the date format Y-m-d H:i:s. The problem is that the format you have used is not the same as Laravel uses for the created_at field.

Update: Nov 2018 Laravel 5.6 "message": "Access level to App\\Note::$timestamps must be public", Make sure you have the proper access level as well. Laravel 5.6 is public.

SQL Server 2008 - Help writing simple INSERT Trigger

You want to take advantage of the inserted logical table that is available in the context of a trigger. It matches the schema for the table that is being inserted to and includes the row(s) that will be inserted (in an update trigger you have access to the inserted and deleted logical tables which represent the the new and original data respectively.)

So to insert Employee / Department pairs that do not currently exist you might try something like the following.

CREATE TRIGGER trig_Update_Employee
ON [EmployeeResult]
FOR INSERT
AS
Begin
    Insert into Employee (Name, Department)
    Select Distinct i.Name, i.Department
    from Inserted i
    Left Join Employee e
    on i.Name = e.Name and i.Department = e.Department
    where e.Name is null
End

Difference between Mutable objects and Immutable objects

Mutable objects have fields that can be changed, immutable objects have no fields that can be changed after the object is created.

A very simple immutable object is a object without any field. (For example a simple Comparator Implementation).

class Mutable{
  private int value;

  public Mutable(int value) {
     this.value = value;
  }

  //getter and setter for value
}

class Immutable {
  private final int value;

  public Immutable(int value) {
     this.value = value;
  }

  //only getter
}

iOS Safari – How to disable overscroll but allow scrollable divs to scroll normally?

I was looking for a way to prevent all body scrolling when there's a popup with a scrollable area (a "shopping cart" popdown that has a scrollable view of your cart).

I wrote a far more elegant solution using minimal javascript to just toggle the class "noscroll" on your body when you have a popup or div that you'd like to scroll (and not "overscroll" the whole page body).

while desktop browsers observe overflow:hidden -- iOS seems to ignore that unless you set the position to fixed... which causes the whole page to be a strange width, so you have to set the position and width manually as well. use this css:

.noscroll {
    overflow: hidden;
    position: fixed;
    top: 0;
    left: 0;
    width: 100%;
}

and this jquery:

/* fade in/out cart popup, add/remove .noscroll from body */
$('a.cart').click(function() {
    $('nav > ul.cart').fadeToggle(100, 'linear');
    if ($('nav > ul.cart').is(":visible")) {
        $('body').toggleClass('noscroll');
    } else {
        $('body').removeClass('noscroll');
    }
});

/* close all popup menus when you click the page... */
$('body').click(function () {
    $('nav > ul').fadeOut(100, 'linear');
    $('body').removeClass('noscroll');
});

/* ... but prevent clicks in the popup from closing the popup */
$('nav > ul').click(function(event){
    event.stopPropagation();
});

How can I force input to uppercase in an ASP.NET textbox?

I just did something similar today. Here is the modified version:

<asp:TextBox ID="txtInput" runat="server"></asp:TextBox>
<script type="text/javascript">
    function setFormat() {
        var inp = document.getElementById('ctl00_MainContent_txtInput');
        var x = inp.value;
        inp.value = x.toUpperCase();
    }

    var inp = document.getElementById('ctl00_MainContent_txtInput');
    inp.onblur = function(evt) {
        setFormat();
    };
</script>

Basically, the script attaches an event that fires when the text box loses focus.

How to set the allowed url length for a nginx request (error code: 414, uri too large)

From: http://nginx.org/r/large_client_header_buffers

Syntax: large_client_header_buffers number size ;
Default: large_client_header_buffers 4 8k;
Context: http, server

Sets the maximum number and size of buffers used for reading large client request header. A request line cannot exceed the size of one buffer, or the 414 (Request-URI Too Large) error is returned to the client. A request header field cannot exceed the size of one buffer as well, or the 400 (Bad Request) error is returned to the client. Buffers are allocated only on demand. By default, the buffer size is equal to 8K bytes. If after the end of request processing a connection is transitioned into the keep-alive state, these buffers are released.

so you need to change the size parameter at the end of that line to something bigger for your needs.

foreach loop in angularjs

The angular.forEach() will iterate through your json object.

First iteration,

key = 0, value = { "name" : "Thomas", "password" : "thomasTheKing"}

Second iteration,

key = 1, value = { "name" : "Linda", "password" : "lindatheQueen" }

To get the value of your name, you can use value.name or value["name"]. Same with your password, you use value.password or value["password"].

The code below will give you what you want:

   angular.forEach(json, function (value, key)
         {
                //console.log(key);
                //console.log(value);
                if (value.password == "thomasTheKing") {
                    console.log("username is thomas");
                }
         });

Structure padding and packing

Structure packing suppresses structure padding, padding used when alignment matters most, packing used when space matters most.

Some compilers provide #pragma to suppress padding or to make it packed to n number of bytes. Some provide keywords to do this. Generally pragma which is used for modifying structure padding will be in the below format (depends on compiler):

#pragma pack(n)

For example ARM provides the __packed keyword to suppress structure padding. Go through your compiler manual to learn more about this.

So a packed structure is a structure without padding.

Generally packed structures will be used

  • to save space

  • to format a data structure to transmit over network using some protocol (this is not a good practice of course because you need to
    deal with endianness)

How to add class active on specific li on user click with jQuery

Slightly off topic but having arrived here while developing an Angular2 app I would like to share that Angular2 automatically adds the class "router-link-active" to active router links such as this one:

You can therefore easily style such links using CSS:
