Are (non-void) self-closing tags valid in HTML5?

As Nikita Skvortsov pointed out, a self-closing div will not validate. This is because a div is a normal element, not a void element.

According to the HTML5 spec, tags that cannot have any contents (known as void elements) can be self-closing*. This includes the following tags:

area, base, br, col, embed, hr, img, input, 
keygen, link, meta, param, source, track, wbr

The "/" is completely optional on the above tags, however, so <img/> is not different from <img>, but <img></img> is invalid.

*Note: foreign elements can also be self-closing, but I don't think that's in scope for this answer.

Convert String to SecureString

If you would like to compress the conversion of a string to a SecureString into a LINQ statement you can express it as follows:

However, keep in mind that using LINQ does not improve the security of this solution. It suffers from the same flaw as any conversion from string to SecureString. As long as the original string remains in memory the data is vulnerable.

That being said, what the above statement can offer is keeping together the creation of the SecureString, its initialization with data and finally locking it from modification.

Escaping quotes and double quotes

Escaping parameters like that is usually source of frustration and feels a lot like a time wasted. I see you're on v2 so I would suggest using a technique that Joel "Jaykul" Bennet blogged about a while ago.

Long story short: you just wrap your string with @' ... '@ :

(Mind that I assumed which quotes are needed, and which things you were attempting to escape.) If you want to work with the output, you may want to add the -NoNewWindow switch.

BTW: this was so important issue that since v3 you can use --% to stop the PowerShell parser from doing anything with your parameters:

\\server\toto.exe --% -batch=b -param="sort1;paramtxt='Security ID=1234'"

... should work fine there (with the same assumption).

Are 64 bit programs bigger and faster than 32 bit versions?

Unless you need to access more memory that 32b addressing will allow you, the benefits will be small, if any.

When running on 64b CPU, you get the same memory interface no matter if you are running 32b or 64b code (you are using the same cache and same BUS).

While x64 architecture has a few more registers which allows easier optimizations, this is often counteracted by the fact pointers are now larger and using any structures with pointers results in a higher memory traffic. I would estimate the increase in the overall memory usage for a 64b application compared to a 32b one to be around 15-30 %.

Use this command:

instead of:

to get the full path in the listing.

Nullable DateTime conversion

Cast the null literal: (DateTime?)null or (Nullable<DateTime>)null.

You can also use default(DateTime?) or default(Nullable<DateTime>)

And, as other answers have noted, you can also apply the cast to the DateTime value rather than to the null literal.

EDIT (adapted from my comment to Prutswonder's answer):

The point is that the conditional operator does not consider the type of its assignment target, so it will only compile if there is an implicit conversion from the type of its second operand to the type of its third operand, or from the type of its third operand to the type of its second operand.

For example, this won't compile:

object o = b ? "Forty-two" : 42;

Casting either the second or third operand to object, however, fixes the problem, because there is an implicit conversion from int to object and also from string to object:

or

If you expect the data to be numeric in some form, and all you are interested in doing is converting the result to a numeric value, I would suggest:

dumps takes an object and produces a string:

load would take a file-like object, read the data from that object, and use that string to create an object:

I agree with Quentin. It doesn't make sense as to why you want to do it like that. It's part of the Semantic Web concept. You have to plan out the objects of your web site for future integration/expansion. Another web app or web site cannot interact with your content if it doesn't follow the proper use-case.

IE and Firefox are two different beasts. There are a lot of things that IE allows that Firefox and other standards-aware browsers reject.

If you're trying to create buttons without actually submitting data then use a combination of DIV/CSS.

Java dynamically loads classes, so your universe of classes would be only those that have already been loaded (and not yet unloaded). Perhaps you can do something with a custom class loader that could check the supertypes of each loaded class. I don't think there's an API to query the set of loaded classes.

The issue is that the * is getting interpreted by your shell and is expanding to a file named TEST_FILE that happens to be in your current working directory, so you're telling find to execute the command named TEST_FILE which doesn't exist. I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with that *, you should just remove it.

Furthermore, you should use the idiom -exec program '{}' \+ instead of -exec program '{}' \; so that find doesn't fork a new process for each file. With ;, a new process is forked for each file, whereas with +, it only forks one process and passes all of the files on a single command line, which for simple programs like chmod is much more efficient.

Lastly, chmod can do recursive changes on its own with the -R flag, so unless you need to search for specific files, just do this:

chmod -R 777 /Users/Test/Desktop/PATH

If it's a PHP issue, you could simply alter the configuration file php.ini wherever it's located and update the settings for PORT/SOCKET-PATH etc to make it connect to the server.

How to use the priority queue STL for objects?

A priority queue is an abstract data type that captures the idea of a container whose elements have "priorities" attached to them. An element of highest priority always appears at the front of the queue. If that element is removed, the next highest priority element advances to the front.

The C++ standard library defines a class template priority_queue, with the following operations:

push: Insert an element into the prioity queue.

top: Return (without removing it) a highest priority element from the priority queue.

pop: Remove a highest priority element from the priority queue.

size: Return the number of elements in the priority queue.

empty: Return true or false according to whether the priority queue is empty or not.

The following code snippet shows how to construct two priority queues, one that can contain integers and another one that can contain character strings:

Since a queue follows a priority discipline, the strings are printed from highest to lowest priority.

Sometimes one needs to create a priority queue to contain user defined objects. In this case, the priority queue needs to know the comparison criterion used to determine which objects have the highest priority. This is done by means of a function object belonging to a class that overloads the operator (). The overloaded () acts as < for the purpose of determining priorities. For example, suppose we want to create a priority queue to store Time objects. A Time object has three fields: hours, minutes, seconds:

Is it possible to install both 32bit and 64bit Java on Windows 7?

You can install multiple Java runtimes under Windows (including Windows 7) as long as each is in their own directory.

For example, if you are running Win 7 64-bit, or Win Server 2008 R2, you may install 32-bit JRE in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre6" and 64-bit JRE in "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6", and perhaps IBM Java 6 in "C:\Program Files (x86)\IBM\Java60\jre".

The Java Control Panel app theoretically has the ability to manage multiple runtimes: Java tab >> View... button

There are tabs for User and System settings. You can add additional runtimes with Add or Find, but once you have finished adding runtimes and hit OK, you have to hit Apply in the main Java tab frame, which is not as obvious as it could be - otherwise your changes will be lost.

If you have multiple versions installed, only the main version will auto-update. I have not found a solution to this apart from the weak workaround of manually updating whenever I see an auto-update, so I'd love to know if anyone has a fix for that.

Most Java IDEs allow you to select any Java runtime on your machine to build against, but if not using an IDE, you can easily manage this using environment variables in a cmd window. Your PATH and the JAVA_HOME variable determine which runtime is used by tools run from the shell. Set the JAVA_HOME to the jre directory you want and put the bin directory into your path (and remove references to other runtimes) - with IBM you may need to add multiple bin directories. This is pretty much all the set up that the default system Java does. You can also set CLASSPATH, ANT_HOME, MAVEN_HOME, etc. to unique values to match your runtime.

add everything that has to work only after the document is loaded and keep other functions that has to be executed as soon as the script is loaded outside the function.

I recommend this method instead of moving down the script, because if the script is on top, the browser will try to download it as soon as it sees the script tag, if it is on the bottom of the page, it will take some more time to load it and until that time no event listeners in the script will work. in this case all other functions could be called and the window.onload will get called once everything is loaded.

Deleting specific rows from DataTable

Where is the problem: It is forbidden to delete items from collection inside a foreach loop.

Solution: Either do it like Widor wrote, or use two loops. In the first pass over DataTable you only store (in a temporary list) the references to rows you want to delete. Then in the second pass over your temporary list you delete those rows.

Rename Pandas DataFrame Index

Warnings you can recover from. Errors you can't. That's my heuristic, others may have other ideas.

My application has a couple views that required a customized navigation bar in the UI for look & feel, however without navigation controller. And the application is required to support iOS version prior to iOS 11, so the handy safe area layout guide could not be used, and I have to adjust the position and height of navigation bar programmatically.

I attached the Navigation Bar to its superview directly, skipping the safe area layout guide as mentioned above. And the status bar height could be retrieved from UIApplication easily, but the default navigation bar height is really a pain-ass...

It struck me for almost half a night, with a number of searching and testing, until I finally got the hint from another post (not working to me though), that you could actually get the height from UIView.sizeThatFits(), like this:

How can I quickly delete a line in VIM starting at the cursor position?

This is a very old question, but as VIM is still relevant something should be clarified.

Every answer and comment here as of October 2018 has referred to what would commonly be known as a "cut" action, thus using any of them will replace whatever is currently in VIM's unnamed register. This register tends to be treated like a default copy/paste clipboard, so none of these answers will work as desired if you are deleting the rest of a line to paste something in the same place afterward, as whatever was just deleted will be subsequently pasted in place of whatever was yanked before.

The true delete command in the OP's context is "_D (or "_C if insert mode is desired) This sends the deleted content into the black hole register, designated by "_, where it will bother no one ever again (although you can still undo this action using u).

That being said, whatever was last yanked is stored in the 0 register, and even if it gets replaced in the unnamed register, it can still be pasted using "0p.

Why should I use a container div in HTML?

THis method allows you to have more flexibility of styling your entire content. Effectivly creating two containers that you can style. THe HTML Body tag which serves as your background, and the div with an id of container which contains your content.

This then allows you to position your content within the page, while styling a background or other effects without issue. THink of it as a "Frame" for the content.

The centos dockerfile has a default command bash.

That means, when run in background (-d), the shell exits immediately.

More recent versions of docker authorize to run a container both in detached mode and in foreground mode (-t, -i or -it)

In that case, you don't need any additional command and this is enough:

docker run -t -d centos

The bash will wait in the background.

Original answer (2015)

As mentioned in this article:

Instead of running with docker run -i -t image your-command, using -d is recommended because you can run your container with just one command and you don’t need to detach terminal of container by hitting Ctrl + P + Q.

However, there is a problem with -d option. Your container immediately stops unless the commands keep running in foreground.
Docker requires your command to keep running in the foreground. Otherwise, it thinks that your applications stops and shutdown the container.

The problem is that some application does not run in the foreground. How can we make it easier?

In this situation, you can add tail -f /dev/null to your command.
By doing this, even if your main command runs in the background, your container doesn’t stop because tail is keep running in the foreground.

So this would work:

docker run -d centos tail -f /dev/null

A docker ps would show the centos container still running.

From there, you can attach to it or detach from it (or docker exec some commands).

Increasing nesting function calls limit

Do you have Zend, IonCube, or xDebug installed? If so, that is probably where you are getting this error from.

I ran into this a few years ago, and it ended up being Zend putting that limit there, not PHP. Of course removing it will let you go past the 100 iterations, but you will eventually hit the memory limits.

You can use assertThrows(), But with assertThrows your assertion will pass even if the thrown exception is of child type.

This is because, JUnit 5 checks exception type by calling Class.isIntance(..), Class.isInstance(..) will return true even if the exception thrown is of the child types.

The issue isn't actually a syntax error, the Hive ParseException is just caused by a reserved keyword in Hive (in this case, end).

The solution: use backticks around the offending column name:

Is there any advantage in creating a temporary file in a more careful way

The temporary files are usually created in the temporary directory (such as /tmp) where all other users and processes has read and write access (any other script can create the new files there). Therefore the script should be careful about creating the files such as using with the right permissions (e.g. read only for the owner, see: help umask) and filename should be be not easily guessed (ideally random). Otherwise if the filenames aren't unique, it can create conflict with the same script ran multiple times (e.g. race condition) or some attacker could either hijack some sensitive information (e.g. when permissions are too open and filename is easy to guess) or create/replacing the file with their own version of the code (like replacing the commands or SQL queries depending on what is being stored).


You could use the following approach to create the temporary directory:

or temporary file:

However it is still predictable and not considered safe.

How to get the size of the current screen in WPF?

I came across this post and found that none of the answers fully captured what I was trying to do. I have a laptop that has a 3840x2160 resolution and two monitors with 1920x1080 resolution. In order to get the correct monitor size in my WPF application I had to make the application DPI aware. Then I used the Win32 API to get the monitor size.

I did this by first moving the window to the monitor that I wanted to get the size from. Then by getting the hwnd of the application's MainWindow (doesn't have to be the main window but my application only has one window) and an IntPtr to the monitor. Then I created a new instance of the MONITORINFOEX struct and called the GetMonitorInfo method.

The MONITORINFOEX struct has both the working area and the full resolution of the screen so you can return whichever one you need. This will also allow you to leave out a reference to System.Windows.Forms (assuming you don't need it something else in your application). I used the .NET Framework Reference Source for System.Windows.Forms.Screen to come up with this solution.

Deciding between HttpClient and WebClient

Perhaps you could think about the problem in a different way. WebClient and HttpClient are essentially different implementations of the same thing. What I recommend is implementing the Dependency Injection pattern with an IoC Container throughout your application. You should construct a client interface with a higher level of abstraction than the low level HTTP transfer. You can write concrete classes that use both WebClient and HttpClient, and then use the IoC container to inject the implementation via config.

What this would allow you to do would be to switch between HttpClient and WebClient easily so that you are able to objectively test in the production environment.

So questions like:

Will HttpClient be a better design choice if we upgrade to .Net 4.5?

Can actually be objectively answered by switching between the two client implementations using the IoC container. Here is an example interface that you might depend on that doesn't include any details about HttpClient or WebClient.

You can use Task.Run to make WebClient run asynchronously in its implementation.

Dependency Injection, when done well helps alleviate the problem of having to make low level decisions upfront. Ultimately, the only way to know the true answer is try both in a live environment and see which one works the best. It's quite possible that WebClient may work better for some customers, and HttpClient may work better for others. This is why abstraction is important. It means that code can quickly be swapped in, or changed with configuration without changing the fundamental design of the app.

BTW: there are numerous other reasons that you should use an abstraction instead of directly calling one of these low-level APIs. One huge one being unit-testability.

I assume you're using tomcat and that means tomcat is either not responding to apache (timeout?) or not even available (down? crashed?). There is no limit to the number of elements that you are passing to IN clause. If there are more elements it will consider it as array and then for each scan in the database it will check if it is contained in the array or not. This approach is not so scalable. Instead of using IN clause try using INNER JOIN with temp table. Refer http://www.xaprb.com/blog/2006/06/28/why-large-in-clauses-are-problematic/ for more info. Using INNER JOIN scales well as query optimizer can make use of hash join and other optimization. Whereas with IN clause there is no way for the optimizer to optimize the query. I have noticed speedup of at least 2x with this change.

The command has to be entered in the directory of the repository. The error is complaining that your current directory isn't a git repo

  1. Are you in the right directory? Does typing ls show the right files?

You asked WHY, not how to cheat it:

Usually because of laziness of programmers of the initial implementation, because they HAVE already put way more effort in other features, delivering more odd side-effects like floats, because they were more requested by designers back then and yet they haven't taken the time to allow this so we can use the FOUR properties to push/pull an element against its neighbors (now we only have four to push, and only 2 to pull).

When html was designed, magazines loved text reflown around images back then, now hated because today we have touch trends, and love squary things with lots of space and nothing to read. That's why they put more pressure on floats than on centering, or they could have designed something like margin-top: fill; or margin: average 0; to simply align the content to the bottom, or distribute its extra space around.

In this case I think it hasn't been implemented because of the same reason that makes CSS to lack of a :parent pseudo-selector: To prevent looping evaluations.

Without being an engineer, I can see that CSS right now is made to paint elements once, remember some properties for future elements to be painted, but NEVER going back to already-painted elements.

That's why (I guess) padding is calculated on the width, because that's the value that was available at the time of starting to paint it.

If you had a negative value for padding, it would affect the outer limits, which has ALREADY been defined when the margin has already been set. I know, nothing has been painted yet, but when you read how the painting process goes, created by geniuses with 90's technology, I feel like I am asking dumb questions and just say "thanks" hehe.

One of the requirements of web pages is that they are quickly available, unlike an app that can take its time and eat the computer resources to get everything correct before displaying it, web pages need to use little resources (so they are fit in every device possible) and be scrolled in a breeze.

If you see applications with complex reflowing and positioning, like InDesign, you can't scroll that fast! It takes a big effort both from processors and graphic card to jump to next pages!

So painting and calculating forward and forgetting about an element once drawn, for now it seems to be a MUST.

It's an old post, with already good answers, but I add my two bits. I don't like to use console.log, I'd rather use a logger that logs to the console, or wherever I want, so I have a module defining a log function a bit like this one

I don't think there is a way to tell which program to use from just the .db extension. It could even be an encrypted database which can't be opened. You can MS Access, or a sqlite manager.

Edit: Try to rename the file to .txt and open it with a text editor. The first couple of words in the file could tell you the DB Type.

If it is a SQLite database, it will start with "SQLite format 3"

To push the current branch and set the remote as upstream, use

    git push --set-upstream origin new_branch

A simple git push assumes that there already exists a remote branch that the current local branch is tracking. If no such remote branch exists, and you want to create it, you must specify that using the -u (short form of --set-upstream) flag.

Why this is so? I guess the implementers felt that creating a branch on the remote is such a major action that it should be hard to do it by mistake. git push is something you do all the time.

"Isn't a branch a new change to be pushed by default?" I would say that "a change" in Git is a commit. A branch is a pointer to a commit. To me it makes more sense to think of a push as something that pushes commits over to the other repositories. Which commits are pushed is determined by what branch you are on and the tracking relationship of that branch to branches on the remote.

This doesn't require jQuery. The JavaScript Math.random function returns a random number between 0 and 1, so if you want a number between 1 and 6, you can do:

Warning: this is a dangerous method! It abuses the i/o buffers in linux and with specific options of buffering it manages to work on small files. It is an interesting curiosity. But don't use it for a real situation!

Besides the -i option of sed you can use the tee utility.

From man:

tee - read from standard input and write to standard output and files

So, the solution would be:

sed s/STRING_TO_REPLACE/STRING_TO_REPLACE_IT/g index.html | tee | tee index.html

-- here the tee is repeated to make sure that the pipeline is buffered. Then all commands in the pipeline are blocked until they get some input to work on. Each command in the pipeline starts when the upstream commands have written 1 buffer of bytes (the size is defined somewhere) to the input of the command. So the last command tee index.html, which opens the file for writing and therefore empties it, runs after the upstream pipeline has finished and the output is in the buffer within the pipeline.

Most likely the following won't work:

sed s/STRING_TO_REPLACE/STRING_TO_REPLACE_IT/g index.html | tee index.html

-- it will run both commands of the pipeline at the same time without any blocking. (Without blocking the pipeline should pass the bytes line by line instead of buffer by buffer. Same as when you run cat | sed s/bar/GGG/. Without blocking it's more interactive and usually pipelines of just 2 commands run without buffering and blocking. Longer pipelines are buffered.) The tee index.html will open the file for writing and it will be emptied. However, if you turn the buffering always on, the second version will work too.
